- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody? Welcome into another edition of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the check Odli.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's Andrew to Checko here, Eagles beat reporter for insidethbirds
- 0:17Speaker 2: dot Com.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Make sure you catch the.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I Guess audio version of our WBCB show Myself and
- 0:24Speaker 2: Adam Kaplan from Chicky's and Pets and Warrington. Great conversation.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Always loves sitting there and talking football with Adam. It
- 0:31Speaker 2: was a lot of fun, So make sure you check
- 0:33Speaker 2: that out. The Eagles and their offensive coordinator search continues on.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It goes into its third week technically, since they've moved
- 0:41Speaker 2: on from Kevin Patulo or removed him from that role.
- 0:44Speaker 2: And so I understand that there's a lot of questions.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I get the sense that there's a lot of angst
- 0:48Speaker 2: from Eagles fans because the Eagles haven't come to a
- 0:53Speaker 2: conclusion yet. But just understand this the Eagles, and this
- 0:56Speaker 2: same applies for every NFL team. They're not beholding to
- 1:00Speaker 2: an arbitrary NFL timeline where they have to come up
- 1:03Speaker 2: with a with an answer, with a solution for the
- 1:07Speaker 2: new offensive coordinator spot.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Because this is an exhaustive search.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I understand that, and there's been so many different candidates
- 1:15Speaker 2: and probably some frankly that haven't been reported that the
- 1:18Speaker 2: Eagles are entertaining and trying to really gauge their best
- 1:25Speaker 2: try to gauge where they're at, where their mindset is,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and their vision for the offense, and make a decision
- 1:30Speaker 2: in their best interest. And so it is going to
- 1:33Speaker 2: be a thorough search, and I don't always think that
- 1:36Speaker 2: that's a bad thing. And I also want to say
- 1:38Speaker 2: that there's I think it's being a little bit conflated
- 1:41Speaker 2: out there an interview versus a job offer, and you're
- 1:46Speaker 2: seeing these different names that are quote unquote seeking other
- 1:50Speaker 2: opportunities after they've interviewed with the Eagles, But doesn't mean
- 1:53Speaker 2: that they declined the Eagles. You have to be offered
- 1:55Speaker 2: the job in order to decline something. So please don't
- 1:59Speaker 2: mistake that or conflate the two throughout this process, because
- 2:04Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of that out there on social
- 2:05Speaker 2: media and it's just not accurate. The other piece the
- 2:09Speaker 2: when you see a coach withdraw in the case of
- 2:11Speaker 2: Declan Doyle, the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator a lot of times,
- 2:16Speaker 2: and this is very common in the NFL, when a
- 2:18Speaker 2: coach withdraws from there withdraws or candidacy for a particular job.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Oftentimes that means that they were either informed they weren't
- 2:29Speaker 2: going to be in the mix for the job, or
- 2:32Speaker 2: they saw maybe the writing on the wall. And for
- 2:36Speaker 2: Declan Doyle, he gets to go to Chicago, stay in Chicago.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's a twenty nine year old coach. He gets to
- 2:40Speaker 2: learn under Ben Johnson for another season, continue to build
- 2:44Speaker 2: and develop quarterback Caleb Williams, and he is on the
- 2:47Speaker 2: fast track to be a head coach. So why would
- 2:49Speaker 2: you uproot and move to another place and try to
- 2:52Speaker 2: start all over again and try to re establish yourself
- 2:55Speaker 2: or put your spin on an offense when it may
- 2:57Speaker 2: not work out.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I think that's probably.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Bleed the logical way of looking at it from Declan
- 3:02Speaker 2: Doyle's perspective. And then you have Charlie Weiss, junior from LSU.
- 3:07Speaker 2: He was newly appointed, newly minted OC for LSU. He
- 3:11Speaker 2: follows Lane Kiffin over there, and he informed the Eagles,
- 3:14Speaker 2: according to Diana Rassini of The Athletic, that he intends
- 3:17Speaker 2: to stay at LSU. It's hard to argue that you're
- 3:20Speaker 2: calling place for a major college football program, you have
- 3:24Speaker 2: a chance to really shape your future and build up
- 3:29Speaker 2: your resume to the point where you may be able
- 3:33Speaker 2: to have a lot of options and offers at the
- 3:36Speaker 2: next level if you're able to go out in LSU
- 3:38Speaker 2: and handle your business and really sort of reimagine the
- 3:43Speaker 2: offense or take it to another level. In some cases,
- 3:46Speaker 2: so understandably that there's going to be different candidates that
- 3:52Speaker 2: have different objectives or there are different points in their
- 3:56Speaker 2: lives and they're making.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Decisions that make sense for them.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It's not always the case, but just adding a little
- 4:02Speaker 2: bit of perspective and clarity to this coaching search. No,
- 4:06Speaker 2: I don't think that the Eagles are suddenly an undesirable
- 4:09Speaker 2: place to work. They're a team that has a head
- 4:12Speaker 2: coach that's taken them to the playoffs for five consecutive years.
- 4:15Speaker 1: They've been to two Super Bowls.
- 4:17Speaker 2: They have an outstanding ownership that's going to do whatever
- 4:19Speaker 2: it takes to win and provide you with those resources.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And yes, there's some ambiguity in terms of the personnel
- 4:27Speaker 2: and the pieces that that coordinator may have to work with.
- 4:30Speaker 2: There's the health status of the offensive line. I've talked
- 4:32Speaker 2: about this. The wide receiver situation is Aj Brown, which
- 4:36Speaker 2: is a key piece to this equation remaining in Philadelphia
- 4:39Speaker 2: or is he going to be playing elsewhere? Those are
- 4:42Speaker 2: real issues or real concerns that come with that job.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So yes, there's going to be some ambiguity, but I
- 4:49Speaker 2: also mentioned the positive of taking that job, and I
- 4:52Speaker 2: don't think for a second that it's not a desirable job.
- 4:56Speaker 2: There are different hurdles that you have to clear. Are
- 4:58Speaker 2: you going to be able to to run your offense
- 5:02Speaker 2: or are you going to have to marry with what
- 5:05Speaker 2: marry what you like to do versus what the Eagles
- 5:10Speaker 2: have already done over the last four or five years.
- 5:14Speaker 2: That's a legitimate that's a legitimate hurdle, and not every
- 5:18Speaker 2: coordinator is going to go for that, but those are
- 5:20Speaker 2: valid questions that they're.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Going to have.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Do you have to shape your offense to acquiesce to
- 5:26Speaker 2: the quarterback and some of the things that maybe the
- 5:30Speaker 2: health status of the offensive line forces you to play
- 5:32Speaker 2: a certain way. Maybe if you don't have a certain
- 5:35Speaker 2: type of whether it's certain tight ends that you need
- 5:38Speaker 2: to run your offense that are blocking centric and things
- 5:40Speaker 2: like that, do you have.
- 5:42Speaker 1: To sort of work around that.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Not every coordinator is going to go for that, and
- 5:47Speaker 2: so the question that I have today that you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: when it comes to the offensive coordinator, if I were
- 5:53Speaker 2: the OC, would you rather marry what you do with
- 5:58Speaker 2: what the Eagles are do and the pieces that they
- 6:01Speaker 2: have in place, or would you go into that job
- 6:04Speaker 2: and try to kind of rip the foundation out and
- 6:08Speaker 2: completely start from scratch. What I would do, I don't
- 6:12Speaker 2: know that it's realistic, because it's not really fathomable to
- 6:18Speaker 2: expect a team to scrap everything that they do in
- 6:21Speaker 2: one offseason, in one training camp and get everybody on
- 6:24Speaker 2: the same page without any hiccups that are gonna extend
- 6:28Speaker 2: in too far into the regular season and assume that
- 6:32Speaker 2: there's going to be smooth sailing. But if it were me,
- 6:34Speaker 2: I would scrap what the Eagles do entirely from an
- 6:38Speaker 2: offensive standpoint. And I really like, for example, what Mike McDaniel,
- 6:42Speaker 2: what he brings to the table in terms of the
- 6:44Speaker 2: creativity with the run game and the pass game.
- 6:47Speaker 1: That's modern.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That's something that I feel gives different teams, gives different
- 6:52Speaker 2: defenses challenges, and I think you.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Need to move a little bit more, a little.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Bit away from the being overly ball security conscious avoiding
- 7:03Speaker 2: certain throws taking them out of the mix the middle
- 7:07Speaker 2: of the field throws limiting what you're doing and limiting
- 7:11Speaker 2: opening things up offensively. I just think that in today's NFL,
- 7:15Speaker 2: teams catch up to what you're trying to do. And
- 7:18Speaker 2: what do you think thirty one other teams did after
- 7:20Speaker 2: the Eagles won the Super Bowl? They really assessed what
- 7:23Speaker 2: the Eagles do and try to fixate and hone in
- 7:26Speaker 2: on that to make sure they weren't going to have
- 7:28Speaker 2: that same success the following season, and the Eagles really
- 7:31Speaker 2: didn't change all that much offensively. As sa Kwon Barkley
- 7:35Speaker 2: will tell you, it was pretty much the same script
- 7:37Speaker 2: as it was the season before. As DeVante Smith will
- 7:40Speaker 2: tell you, it's pretty much the same offense that they've
- 7:42Speaker 2: been running since twenty twenty one when.
- 7:44Speaker 1: He got there.
- 7:45Speaker 2: So I think you have to completely reimagine this offense
- 7:48Speaker 2: and make it a little bit more creative and innovative
- 7:53Speaker 2: and forced players including Jalen Hurst to become comfortable being
- 7:58Speaker 2: uncomfortable and really push him to taking his game to
- 8:03Speaker 2: an even greater level like we saw maybe in twenty
- 8:06Speaker 2: twenty two.
- 8:08Speaker 1: The right coach can do that.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I do believe that I don't I'm not buying the
- 8:11Speaker 2: fact that, well, Jalen can't do this.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Jalen can't do that.
- 8:15Speaker 2: We don't know that because he hasn't been asked to
- 8:17Speaker 2: really do anything else. Whether or not he can when
- 8:20Speaker 2: he's when you get if you get the right coach
- 8:22Speaker 2: in place and they're trying to install some of those things,
- 8:24Speaker 2: well that's another story. But I think he deserves the
- 8:27Speaker 2: benefit of the doubt to be able to have that opportunity. So,
- 8:30Speaker 2: if it were me, you have to move away from
- 8:33Speaker 2: being this conservative style of offense. It's just too restricted there.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It's you're you're forcing yourself to almost be perfect. It's
- 8:44Speaker 2: the death by a thousand cuts approach, and you're putting
- 8:46Speaker 2: a lot of pressure in turn on your defense, and
- 8:50Speaker 2: that's not realistic either. The Eagles have a very strong defense,
- 8:53Speaker 2: but what's going to happen on a day where they're
- 8:55Speaker 2: not playing their best well, I mean we saw that
- 8:59Speaker 2: in the in the A forty nine ers. That wasn't
- 9:01Speaker 2: their best game. They played fine, they played well enough,
- 9:05Speaker 2: but the offense didn't even come close to meeting them
- 9:09Speaker 2: halfway and being able to do their part to pick
- 9:13Speaker 2: up the tab and push the Eagles to a victory there.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying
- 9:19Speaker 3: to clean up their habits, and that includes me. Honestly,

- 12:30Speaker 5: din Apothecary top quality cannabis, great prices and an experience
- 12:34Speaker 5: made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 12:39Speaker 2: It's just too it's become too easy to defend, and
- 12:44Speaker 2: they're where you don't have a running game and you
- 12:45Speaker 2: want to play this style and everything that you do
- 12:49Speaker 2: really revolves around Saquon Barkley in that offensive line. And
- 12:52Speaker 2: when you can't do that, you take away that facet
- 12:55Speaker 2: and now you're forcing Egles become one dimensional and take
- 12:58Speaker 2: to the air. That's how teams are gonna are going
- 13:02Speaker 2: to force the Eagles to beat you. They're going to say, Okay,
- 13:05Speaker 2: throw the football, and they'll take that all day long.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And I just think you saw a lot of the
- 13:12Speaker 2: different shortcomings and inadequacies of the offense, and that's gonna
- 13:18Speaker 2: have to change. In my estimation, if the Eagles want
- 13:20Speaker 2: to get to where they want to go, it's gonna
- 13:22Speaker 2: take the right coach to do that. It's gonna take
- 13:24Speaker 2: the right coach to help Jay when Hurts bring his
- 13:27Speaker 2: game back up to the level that he played a
- 13:29Speaker 2: couple of years ago, because I do believe that it's there,
- 13:32Speaker 2: but it's gonna, like I keep going back to, it's
- 13:34Speaker 2: gonna take the right coach with the right vision and
- 13:38Speaker 2: that they're going to be willing to take on that task.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And it's not some it's not going to be someone
- 13:44Speaker 2: like a Mike McDaniel who walks into a job with
- 13:46Speaker 2: the Chargers where you have Justin Herbert there who can
- 13:50Speaker 2: throw the ball all over the yard. He can scamper
- 13:52Speaker 2: for some yards if he has to. They have a
- 13:55Speaker 2: good defense, and if they make some adjustments there on
- 13:58Speaker 2: the offensive line, it's a job that isn't There's not
- 14:02Speaker 2: going to be as much pressure there. There's not going
- 14:04Speaker 2: to be as much scrutiny as it were as it
- 14:06Speaker 2: would have been if he.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Were to be in Philadelphia.
- 14:09Speaker 2: And yes, I do think that the market, the Philadelphia market,
- 14:13Speaker 2: it's very passionate. Sometimes I think it borders on extreme.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And I think a lot of the criticism that Kevin
- 14:19Speaker 2: Patullo took was fair. I think a lot of it, though,
- 14:24Speaker 2: was extreme, and it did border on abuse.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Having a head coach's house vandalized is.
- 14:32Speaker 2: It's appalling, it's disgusting, and it's inexcusable. And I'd be
- 14:38Speaker 2: remiss if I didn't sort of toss that out there,
- 14:41Speaker 2: that that's not on in the back of the mind
- 14:42Speaker 2: of some of these perspective candidates, nobody wants to put
- 14:46Speaker 2: their family in that type of situation. So be better
- 14:50Speaker 2: and understand that there's a lot of different ways of
- 14:53Speaker 2: looking at something. There's a lot of different layers to
- 14:56Speaker 2: why something isn't working. And I think a lot of
- 14:59Speaker 2: what hap up with Kevin.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Petullo is, at least for me viewing it.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Through the lens that I have as a reporter, it
- 15:05Speaker 2: bordered on bullying to a point it exceeded past the
- 15:10Speaker 2: criticism and I went to bullying and where his name
- 15:15Speaker 2: was pretty much toxic in this city.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And that's not fair. That's just not fair.
- 15:20Speaker 2: And you know, I don't want to make this with
- 15:22Speaker 2: Kevin Petullo me being on my soapbox here, but no
- 15:26Speaker 2: coach wants to deal with.
- 15:27Speaker 1: That that is fair or not.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Because there was a few knuckleheads who did it, that
- 15:32Speaker 2: is going to be sort of a stain and something
- 15:34Speaker 2: that maybe you think twice. If you're a coordinator with
- 15:37Speaker 2: a family or things like that, you don't want your
- 15:40Speaker 2: family to have to be subjected to that kind of garbage.
- 15:43Speaker 2: And I think when you take all that into account, yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I mean that's that's that's part of it. That's that's
- 15:51Speaker 2: one of those things that you know, it's not super
- 15:54Speaker 2: high on the list, but it is. I imagine it
- 15:57Speaker 2: is on in the back of the mind of some
- 15:59Speaker 2: of these who are applying for it. But just some
- 16:02Speaker 2: of my thoughts here. That's gonna do it for this
- 16:04Speaker 2: edition of the Czech Odily. I'm Andrew to Checko and
- 16:06Speaker 2: I'll catch you all on the next one.
