Transcript
- 0:08Hello and welcome back to Ambitious.
- 0:10So today we are diving in. I'm seeing myself on camera
- 0:14right now and I'm going to be honest, I am wearing, if you're
- 0:17not watching this and you're listening, I'm wearing a tube
- 0:19with headphones and it's kind of giving.
- 0:21It's kind of giving like KDP the rapper, like it's kind of kind
- 0:25of giving rap vibes right now. My mom here for it.
- 0:28I just came in from walking my dogs and literally on my walk
- 0:33had this download of the fact that I wanted to record this.
- 0:36And so I was like, am I podcast ready?
- 0:38No, but am I going to come on and talk with this?
- 0:41Absolutely I am because I in the last week and having a promotion
- 0:48have been enrolling a lot of people into coaching.
- 0:52And I am just like obviously immensely so, so, so immensely
- 0:57grateful and so incredibly excited.
- 0:59And one of the things that I obviously see a lot in being a
- 1:04business coach is a kind of resistance questions, concerns,
- 1:09all of the things around investing, right?
- 1:11And so often times we wonder like how do we know if we're
- 1:14making the right investment? Like how do we know who the
- 1:19right people are? And you know, is this the person
- 1:22that's going to help to take my business to the next level?
- 1:24And this, by the way, doesn't necessarily just have to be for
- 1:26a business coach. This could also be just in the
- 1:28aspect of just services in general and things that you're
- 1:31going to want to consider when you're hiring somebody.
- 1:33So I want to tell you a quick story because I had a consult
- 1:35this week and I was talking to a lady who was like, Kate, I
- 1:39really, really want to do your coaching.
- 1:40And I most recently just hired somebody.
- 1:42And I feel like I don't know if I made the right hire.
- 1:44And so I said to her, OK, well, what makes you say that?
- 1:46Like what's making you feel like maybe you didn't make the right
- 1:48hire? And she was like, well, I don't
- 1:52feel like some of the things we've talked about today are
- 1:54things that I've asked them about.
- 1:56And because that I'm really nervous because it means that
- 1:58maybe I didn't ask the critical questions that I needed to.
- 2:02And now I kind of in a way after this conversation, don't really
- 2:04know what I signed up for. And so when we were talking and
- 2:08like, one of the things to be totally honest that I like do
- 2:11with peers, friends, people in my DMS were like asking me these
- 2:13questions and like I coach people on how to make smart
- 2:17investments in their business. Because I think there is,
- 2:20there's two sides, right? Like there's this moment in your
- 2:22business where like, you know, something's not working.
- 2:24You know, you need to change. And so the first thing that you
- 2:27do is you're like, OK, like 321 go and you make a quick
- 2:32investment because you just feel like I need support.
- 2:34I need this problem solved as soon as possible and I'm going
- 2:36to move. And like, listen, I've done
- 2:37those. Some of those have worked out to
- 2:39be beautiful investments. And some of the best ones I've
- 2:41ever made. Some of those have also been
- 2:43things that I'm like, Oh my gosh, if I would have just taken
- 2:45a freaking second to pause, I could have been much more
- 2:48strategic and intentional about that.
- 2:50And there's also those moments though, when we're in the
- 2:54process and we're kind of like ruminating, right?
- 2:57And we're kind of like, is this the right person?
- 2:58Should I move? And so for me, I help people
- 3:01with the understanding of that time to really get clarity of
- 3:04like, is this a smart decision for you?
- 3:06Does this make sense? Like, is this the right move?
- 3:08And I literally provide people with questions and I tell them,
- 3:12listen, whether you invest with me or not is not really my
- 3:15concern. Like I don't, I personally am
- 3:18like indifferent whether I'm the person for you.
- 3:21Like it's not about me being your coach, it's about you
- 3:24getting coaching. And that's like my philosophy
- 3:27with everyone. I go on the phone with, everyone
- 3:28I talk in the DMS with, I literally will voicemail people
- 3:31and say listen, like girl, I don't, I don't care who you
- 3:33invest with, just get support cuz like this is what's going on
- 3:36in your business. And whether it's me or someone
- 3:38else, it doesn't matter. You just need to get somebody
- 3:40and some separate set of eyes in here to be able to support you.
- 3:44So anyways, when I'm going through these conversations, I'm
- 3:46coaching people on like questions to ask and I coach
- 3:48people on how to hire a marketing agency and how to hire
- 3:51someone for ads and how to hire somebody for design and like
- 3:55what we should be looking for. And so there's a couple core
- 3:58questions and things that I look at when I'm making investments.
- 4:01And you know, I've just seen so many stories of situations where
- 4:07this has just not gone well. And like, I have like I have a
- 4:09really close friend of mine and she was wanting to make an
- 4:13investment. And so she was like, you know,
- 4:14any coaching you'd give me on making this investment, like I'm
- 4:17totally all ears. And so I said, you know, yeah,
- 4:20like here's some things that I would personally recommend.
- 4:22Like I'd ask the following questions.
- 4:24I would look for the following pieces of information.
- 4:26And she she was so excited to make this investment.
- 4:30She just didn't. She just was like, I don't know.
- 4:33I just feel like it's the right move.
- 4:34I'm gonna, I'm gonna do it. And I'm like, OK, so at the end
- 4:37of this Fast forward six months later, she's like Kate, we go
- 4:42for dinner and she's like, I fully remember you telling me
- 4:47the prompts of what I needed to go do.
- 4:49And I was just so excited and so giddy about getting support and
- 4:53getting change and like seeing movement that I didn't take the
- 4:57step to ask any of those questions.
- 4:59And so because of that, I, yeah, like, she basically was like, I,
- 5:02you know, kind of deserve what ended up happening, I guess
- 5:05because she had a big following out with the person she invested
- 5:08with. The service did not get her
- 5:10results. She didn't feel supported.
- 5:11There was just multiple of, you know, red flags, if you will,
- 5:15that had come up during their time together.
- 5:17And she tried to, you know, kind of ask about like, you know, so
- 5:20if this investment doesn't feel like a smart one for me, what's
- 5:23the next step? And basically lost thousands and
- 5:26thousands of dollars that, in my opinion, and what she also
- 5:30agrees with now, could have been prevented if she had just been a
- 5:34little bit more present and like pulled out of the emotion of the
- 5:39investment. And so I don't want to take away
- 5:42from the excitement of investing, by the way, like I
- 5:44think that like there is this this charge, this momentum, this
- 5:47giddiness. And like, I've had moments in my
- 5:49career where like I wasn't, I'm not an analytical person, by the
- 5:52way, like I don't invest and like, you know, sit down with my
- 5:54spreadsheets and, you know, cross reference, like I'm not
- 5:57that person. What we're going to talk about
- 5:59today is we're going to talk about a 5 minute pulse check.
- 6:03Like that's what we're going to talk about.
- 6:04We're going to talk about AI want to do this and giving
- 6:08yourself a 5 minute pulse check in a moment to say, OK, does
- 6:13this person hit these boxes? And I really think about
- 6:15investing, especially if you're investing into a mentor, you're
- 6:19investing into somebody, like you'd be investing into a
- 6:21relationship. That's how I look at it.
- 6:23Like is this partner who's going to really ultimately with their
- 6:27strategy and their consulting in the way that they're going to
- 6:30partner in my business? Is this mentor somebody that I
- 6:35can see myself linking arms with?
- 6:37And I am just as assessing of if we're a good match on some of
- 6:42the things we're going to talk about today as I would be in a
- 6:45friendship, as I would be in a romantic relationship.
- 6:47Like it doesn't matter what bucket.
- 6:49So what we're going to go through is if you are somebody
- 6:52who's considering hiring a business mentor or hiring
- 6:55somebody to assist you with scaling your business and
- 6:58developing your business, these are things you're going to want
- 7:00to consider. And these are things that I
- 7:02would personally be taking in and inquiring and doing some
- 7:06reflecting on before you maybe even decide to reach out or
- 7:09before you decide to kind of sign that contract and make that
- 7:13first payment. So one of the first things that
- 7:16I think is really important is to remember that when you're
- 7:18working with different mentors, they usually are people who have
- 7:21some aspect of specialty. It's like they have some aspect
- 7:24of something that they're really, really good in.
- 7:26So I look at when I'm trying to hire somebody, I try to see like
- 7:30what is their skill set? Like?
- 7:31Are they something that they're a little bit more in the bucket
- 7:35of embodiment? Are they a little bit more in
- 7:37the bucket of strategy? Are they very heavy on data?
- 7:41Are they somebody who's like really nerding it on systems?
- 7:43And listen, I don't think any of those things are right or wrong
- 7:46or like the thing to do versus not to do.
- 7:49I just genuinely think that they're different skill sets.
- 7:51And so because they're different skill sets, it means that we
- 7:54need different things at different times in our business.
- 7:57So one of the things that I'm really focused on when I'm
- 7:59hiring a mentor is what is their specialty?
- 8:01And so specialties can come into things like are they somebody
- 8:05specifically who, for example, specializes in marketing?
- 8:08Do they specialize in mindset? The one of the most recent hires
- 8:11that I had made for a coach was someone who specialized in
- 8:14customer journey. And when I had hired this coach,
- 8:18like I so funny story, funny, but kind of not funny on my
- 8:22part, Funny story. Because basically what had
- 8:24happened was a couple years ago, I had reached out to him on
- 8:28Instagram and I had known someone who's a really big brand
- 8:30that had worked with him. And I was like, OK, like that's
- 8:32a brand that I trust the person that had worked with him.
- 8:35And I was like, OK, like I want to know about his coaching.
- 8:38So anyway, I had had coaching at this point for like years and
- 8:41years and years. The guy very familiar with
- 8:43coaching. And so again, like I started to
- 8:45kind of use these principles. And so I we ended up connecting
- 8:48at an event and everything he was saying really resonated with
- 8:52me, but I couldn't really remember who.
- 8:54Like I wasn't as aware of him and his approach and his
- 8:58perspective and his business. I was a more aware of his client
- 9:01and kind of by association had trusted him.
- 9:03So when we go to this event, we connect with each other.
- 9:07He does a training and his whole training was around customer
- 9:10journey. And I was like, in what sense?
- 9:14Because I was like, OK, customer journey, but like, what exactly
- 9:16are you going to help me with? So like he had his presentation
- 9:19granted, like I didn't know all the insurance and outs of his
- 9:21business. I hadn't consumed everything at
- 9:23that point yet. But I had just seen him speak
- 9:26and I was very activated in the sense of like this felt like a
- 9:28new approach. It felt like a new lens.
- 9:30Like this felt like something that's going to feel different
- 9:32for me in the way that I invested.
- 9:34And so I had said to him, luckily, you know, I really
- 9:36think that I'd like to get support.
- 9:38But yeah, like I'm just going to kind of like see and and just
- 9:40want to let you know, like I'm kind of stewing on this what I
- 9:42want to do with it, but I'll keep you posted kind of thing
- 9:44before the end of the weekend. He's OK Sounds great.
- 9:47That night I literally went upstairs with my laptop and I
- 9:51went to search his specialty. And what I mean by that is like
- 9:55there was a specialty that he marketed, but I wanted to know
- 9:58and understand how that was going to connect to my business.
- 10:01So his specialty was customer journey.
- 10:03But the customer journey wasn't just in the delivery with
- 10:05clients. The customer journey was in your
- 10:06e-mail sequences, in your marketing, in your sales, in
- 10:09your team communication mission values had scaled companies to
- 10:14like billions of dollars. And so I was like, OK, now I
- 10:17feel like I understand what he had noted his specialty to be
- 10:21and most importantly, how that was going to be impactful for me
- 10:23and my business. And what I was looking for.
- 10:27And so I really believe that when you're investing with
- 10:30somebody, you have to make sure that they have the skills that
- 10:33you're ultimately needing. Now here's the interesting
- 10:36thing. Often times people invest in the
- 10:39lens of who they are. So like if you're like super
- 10:42type A and you're masculine and you're like strategy and
- 10:44structure and systems, you might look for a coach that's just
- 10:47like that. I have done that as well.
- 10:49You also, though, in certain seasons may need a coach who's
- 10:53polar opposite. And the interesting part was
- 10:57that in some investments I made, I went in with the belief I was
- 11:00investing in one thing and like looking for, for example, heavy,
- 11:03heavy strategy. But then in going into our time
- 11:06together really unfolded and unpacked the fact that like, I
- 11:09really did need mindset help. I needed, you know, deeper
- 11:12embodiment work. I needed definitely like a
- 11:14better understanding of how to embody the leadership of ACEO
- 11:16deeper. Like I needed to learn those
- 11:18pieces. And so I also want to caution
- 11:21you when you're investing to be tuned into, there's what I think
- 11:25I need, but also seeing does the person have other, you know,
- 11:29transferable skills in other areas potentially that might be
- 11:32able to help you to go even deeper into transformation that
- 11:35you're not even necessarily aware of right now.
- 11:37And I was very blessed with my last investment because again,
- 11:41wow, I was going in with the perspective of like strategy,
- 11:44strategy, strategy. And like that was so 100% my
- 11:46brain of like what I wanted. I got so much more than that.
- 11:49It was such a blessing because I got so much of the other side of
- 11:53the coin being that mindset work and all of those pieces.
- 11:56And so I really do believe that when we're going into
- 11:59investments, we have to ask ourselves and take inventory,
- 12:01like what do we need and what kind of skills would support me
- 12:06in the next stage of where I'm going with my business?
- 12:08Is it maybe a little bit more of what you're looking for right
- 12:10now of like marketing sales offers, you know, systems team?
- 12:14Or is there also a possibility that you might see need somebody
- 12:16who's a little bit more versatile and has the ability to
- 12:20help you to tap into that other area that you've been ignoring,
- 12:23that other area that has made you uncomfortable?
- 12:25And so for me, you know, even in hiring this mentor, one of the
- 12:29key factors that caused me to hire him was not only his
- 12:32understanding of customer journey, but we had had a
- 12:34conversation at this conference about my business.
- 12:37And he really rattled my mindset in a good way because he really
- 12:41made me and challenged me to look at my business with, you
- 12:43know, a different set of, of lenses and basically a different
- 12:46set of eyes. And So what I also knew by that
- 12:49conversation was he had the ability to shift my thinking and
- 12:52was very knowledgeable about how to basically tap into my mindset
- 12:56and help me to see things through a perspective that
- 12:58allowed me to kind of take the journey with him.
- 13:00And that was a really important skill for me.
- 13:02And the last several mentors that I've had, I've looked at
- 13:05someone who was very strategy dominant.
- 13:08So I don't like for me, I don't personally invest or find that
- 13:12I, I see a lot of traction in, in my investments by having
- 13:16someone who is super, super, super in the feminine.
- 13:19Like I'm not somebody who feels like, and again, this doesn't
- 13:22say that this is right or wrong. This is just more a matter of my
- 13:25personal investments. OK, so I wanna make that very
- 13:27clear because I also have clients and peers who do make
- 13:30these investments and they find that they soar.
- 13:32For me understanding of just the the non tangible work I have
- 13:38always found was not really what I found the most movement in.
- 13:42I really need a combo. I need somebody who has the
- 13:45ability to tap into mindset. Maybe you're not a mindset
- 13:48coach, but you have the ability to have mindset based
- 13:51conversations. And then you also are someone
- 13:54who's very strategy data and you know, structure heavy.
- 13:58I need frameworks, I need, you know, buckets.
- 14:01I need pipelines. Like I need something that gives
- 14:04me a overarching bumper lane that I can find fluidity within.
- 14:08That's really, really important to me, but that you also are not
- 14:11somebody who's just nuts and bolts of strategy and can't get
- 14:14into a mindset conversation. Now, here's the thing though.
- 14:16It's very different than making a mindset investment.
- 14:18Because when you make a mindset investment, that person is a
- 14:20specialist in mindset. And that brings me to point #2
- 14:24which is looking at the aspect of the question of the person
- 14:26you're investing into. Do you need a generalist right
- 14:30now or do you need a specialist? And in investing, I think a lot
- 14:34of people when they think about business mentors, think about
- 14:37like how can I find somebody who does everything right?
- 14:39Like you want somebody who does ads and who does marketing and
- 14:41who does social media and who does, you know, messaging, but
- 14:44then also does passive, but then also does team, but then also
- 14:47does leadership and then also does systems and also does legal
- 14:49and also does brand and so on so forth.
- 14:52Do those people exist? Yes, there are people who have a
- 14:55base level of knowledge of all of those different departments.
- 14:58But the thing that you can also consider is can you also invest
- 15:02either in substitution of or in addition to your business coach
- 15:05or your business mentor to really get specialist support?
- 15:09And that's what I've done like when I was with my, not the
- 15:11current coach that I have, but the one before that when I was
- 15:15with that coach, I made a lot of investments on the side.
- 15:17I was investing into specialists for marketing, strategy,
- 15:20understanding. I was investing into specialists
- 15:22for systems and operations. I had a leadership coach that I
- 15:25met with once 1/4 and we did leadership consulting and
- 15:28developed me as like how I can better lead my team, how I can
- 15:31better manage, how I can better communicate.
- 15:33I had somebody that I also worked with, you know, in legal
- 15:36and better understanding, like how to understand the division
- 15:39between what is something that should be more of a legal
- 15:41conversation versus more of APR conversation.
- 15:44I learned conflict resolution. None of those things though I
- 15:47learned from my main business coach, my main business coach
- 15:49that I was working with ultimately helped me with sales
- 15:53offers and delivery and team. And then outside of that, I had
- 15:57one off investments that I was making or contract investments
- 16:00of three and six months that I was making with other people
- 16:03that were specialists in their fields.
- 16:05And so I think the other thing that is really important is that
- 16:07you have to ask yourself what you're looking for and really
- 16:11see is that person, that thing. And for me, what I've seen is
- 16:14like, I don't need my mentor to literally know everything about
- 16:17any single thing under the sun. Like that's not the reason that
- 16:20I'm investing with them. The reason I'm investing with
- 16:22them is because how they think and because of how they think
- 16:24that they've taken certain actions that they can lead me
- 16:27on, how I can either prevent myself from making mistakes or
- 16:31prevent myself from missing the mark on some of the actions that
- 16:35I might be taking. And so I'm really conscious when
- 16:38I'm making an investment to ask myself, do I need a specialist
- 16:41right now or do I need a generalist?
- 16:43And I often times will find that I have like a, a long term
- 16:48mentor. Like I'm very much somebody
- 16:49who's invested in long term mentorship.
- 16:52And just to kind of clarify what that means, it means like going
- 16:54the distance with someone and using the first six months with
- 16:58them to really figure out like, is this my forever person?
- 17:00Like I said earlier, it's literally like a relationship,
- 17:02like my coach that I was with that was like my baseline.
- 17:07I was literally with him for four years, four years of like
- 17:13ongoing contracts together. We did one off VIP days
- 17:15together, The mastermind, the different levels of the
- 17:18mastermind, all kinds of different supports underneath
- 17:21the umbrella of his business. But I was in his world in a
- 17:24program coaching a support every single month for four years.
- 17:30And so that for me was the fact that he was my generalist, like
- 17:33he was the person who I knew had a base level of knowledge of a
- 17:35bunch of different departments. But and then addition to that, I
- 17:38also hired specialists. And that really made me feel
- 17:41like I also didn't have to put the pressure on him to need to
- 17:44know literally everything. Because the reality is people
- 17:47don't know everything. Like as a, as a one person to be
- 17:50like, you're going to be the person who saves my business.
- 17:52You're going to be the person who's like my go to strategist
- 17:55and I don't need anybody else. I've never just found, I've
- 17:58never found that to be the case. And so I'm really like, how do I
- 18:01basically build? That's how I think about it at
- 18:03least, is like how do I build my like a vendors team of business
- 18:08strategists? And that's how I look at
- 18:10investing. You invest in a generalist who's
- 18:12kind of like your guiding light in the person who's linked arms
- 18:15with you, who's going to help you with the building of your
- 18:17business. But then you have specialists
- 18:19that are very, very specific in what they do that help you to
- 18:22get specific results and outcomes.
- 18:23Same thing when you think about like a doctor, you would have a
- 18:26general doctor that you go to to and that you have frequent
- 18:28visits with and check insurance with and all the things.
- 18:31But if something comes up and you have something happen as a
- 18:34female, you might go see like a gynecologist.
- 18:37Like that's the same thing in business.
- 18:39We still have always that generalist.
- 18:40That's our touch point. But then also investing in
- 18:43specialists can also be very strategic.
- 18:44In addition to that baseline support.
- 18:47Another thing that I'm looking at when I'm hiring somebody,
- 18:49this is like one of the most, and I mean probably above all
- 18:54else that I'm going to mention, the most important things that I
- 18:57care about is what their values are.
- 18:59Because I want to know what you believe to be true and I want to
- 19:03know what you care about. And when I say what you care
- 19:07about, it's not necessarily like obviously for sure you can care
- 19:11about, for some people it's religious beliefs, some people
- 19:14it's political beliefs. You know, obviously all of those
- 19:17are something you can take in consideration when you're
- 19:18investing with somebody and whatever is important to you
- 19:21around your values and beliefs can be something that you assess
- 19:24in another person. But I also look at like, what
- 19:27are your beliefs and values when it comes to business, right?
- 19:30Like do you believe that, you know, generating leads from
- 19:34social media is about relationships or do you believe
- 19:37it's really about the transaction?
- 19:38Like it's a numbers game? Like just like, you know,
- 19:40basically message a bunch of people or more calls, more
- 19:42calls, more calls. Are you about width?
- 19:44Are you about depth? Are you about, you know, for
- 19:46example, like the hustle culture of the fact of like team no
- 19:50sleep and like you're working 10 hour days?
- 19:52Or are you from the camp of the fact that you are maybe a mom
- 19:56and you want to have you want to teach other women to have the
- 19:58ability that they are able to work, you know, 4 hours a day
- 20:01and have a multiple 7 figure business?
- 20:02Like what do you believe to be true?
- 20:04What do you stand for is something I really, really
- 20:08assess. And so for me the belief systems
- 20:11and values is big because like you can and you can ask someone
- 20:14a million. Time's over.
- 20:16Like what they do as their strategies.
- 20:19But The thing is like, what do we know about even just like
- 20:21human beings in general, right? Like when you invest with a
- 20:23business coach or you invest really like if you really
- 20:26connect with anybody, what are you connecting on?
- 20:28You're connecting on their values.
- 20:30Like you have your best friend that you love, you love her
- 20:33because of her values. You love her because of she has
- 20:37similar values and interests and things.
- 20:39And you guys agree on things together, even potentially your
- 20:43partner, you love your partner because he or she is somebody
- 20:48that really has the same values and beliefs as you, right?
- 20:51So when it comes to sharing this journey with somebody, I want to
- 20:56share this journey with someone who has beliefs and values that
- 21:00I feel are something that are in line with what I care about.
- 21:05And so I really hyper assess when it comes to their messaging
- 21:09and their content and like how they show up.
- 21:12I really care about that. So for example, like a something
- 21:15that all of you would be familiar with.
- 21:16You guys know if you've consumed me for any length of time, how
- 21:18like low key obsessed I am with Gary Vee and I'm obsessed with
- 21:21his marketing. And you know, one of the things
- 21:24that I love about Gary Vee is the values and the beliefs that
- 21:27he shares in his content. And like, yes, of course he has
- 21:30beliefs about marketing and he has beliefs about sales and he
- 21:33has beliefs about all of different types of things.
- 21:36But one thing you'll know if you consume his podcast for 345
- 21:41episodes is how much he cares about his audience.
- 21:43He cares about asking the hard hitting questions so they're
- 21:46served. He cares about pouring into them
- 21:49and answering comments and answering on lives and like
- 21:51getting in the weeds with his audience to make sure they're
- 21:53immensely supported. He cares about their feedback
- 21:57and like, what are they saying? And how can I make sure that you
- 21:59guys are supported at the highest level?
- 22:01Like he's in there with his people.
- 22:03That shows me an example of one of the things that he really
- 22:08values. And so for me, it's a symbol of
- 22:11his kind of moral compass, if you will.
- 22:13And I really care about that. When I'm investing with
- 22:15somebody, I don't want to just know what you can do for me.
- 22:18I also really care about how you're going to help me to do
- 22:21that. And so like I also have invested
- 22:24in another business coach previous to like years ago.
- 22:28And you know, this coach was somebody that I really didn't
- 22:33resonate with the values of like the way they did business was
- 22:36just like, yeah, they got outcomes, they got results, they
- 22:39got the money, they got the following, they got all the
- 22:41things. But I'm going to be honest, the
- 22:43way in which they did it made me wildly uncomfortable and it
- 22:48wasn't something that I emotionally or value based
- 22:52aligned with. And then having to take these
- 22:54actions. Those were actions that were in
- 22:57accordance with the values that I didn't resonate with.
- 22:58And so I think of values and belief system and an
- 23:00understanding or evaluation of that is really important.
- 23:03The other thing I also want to look at is what is their
- 23:05communication style? So like for me, I know how I
- 23:09like to be coached. I know what motivates me.
- 23:12I know what activates me. I know what I do resonate with,
- 23:16but I don't resonate with. And for me, I done on any
- 23:20coaching lessons, this would be like, Yep, I don't do well with
- 23:23soft delivery. Like I don't do well with the
- 23:25kind of like, yeah, so like, you know, that's what we're going to
- 23:27do and let's touch base next week.
- 23:29Like I'm not that person. Like I don't, that's not how I
- 23:33operate specifically. I need somebody be like, hey, is
- 23:36there any reason? I remember my last coach had
- 23:38said this to me and I was like, I love this.
- 23:40It was basically like, is there any reason you can't get that
- 23:42done by next week? And I was like, no, I don't
- 23:46think so. Like you don't think so or you
- 23:47know, and I was like, I know. And they're like, OK, great.
- 23:51So then you'll have it done by the next call, right?
- 23:52And I was like, yeah. And they're like, OK, great.
- 23:55I like the boot camp style. I like.
- 23:58And I actually it's so funny because I have this like alter
- 24:00ego that I use with my clients and anyone listening to this,
- 24:03you're like, I already know where this is going.
- 24:04I do something called Boot Camp Kate, which is basically like
- 24:08one of the mottos that we take in our business is the aspect of
- 24:12like the soft front and the hard back, which is basically where
- 24:15like I want to make sure that clients always feel like they
- 24:17have a soft place to land that if they're going through
- 24:19something that I will be empathetic, I will be
- 24:21compassionate to what they're experiencing and give them a
- 24:23soft space to be able to share that.
- 24:25But I also recognize that when someone invests with me, they're
- 24:29not investing with me for me to be their BFF.
- 24:31They're investing with me. While some of them end up being
- 24:34my BFFS in the sense of like I do, I'm literally like in the
- 24:37bridal party of one of my clients, like we do end up
- 24:39becoming very, very close. The thing that I would say is
- 24:43that that's not why they're hiring me.
- 24:45You're hiring me to get you an outcome.
- 24:47You're hiring me to challenge you, and you're hiring me to
- 24:49help you to develop and help you to transform.
- 24:52And so both in your business and in yourself.
- 24:56And so the thing that I, I really look for when I'm
- 24:58investing with somebody is to say, like, what is their
- 24:59communication style? Like how do they, how do they
- 25:02talk? How do they teach?
- 25:04How do they facilitate? How do they, Yeah, how do they
- 25:07communicate? And is that a communication
- 25:09style that I find that I really resonate with?
- 25:11And again, this is something that you might not know right
- 25:14now. If you haven't had a lot of
- 25:15coaching, you might not know what your communication style
- 25:17is. But for me, I know for a fact
- 25:19that when I am in a, for example, a moment of breakdown,
- 25:24I need a soft spot. Like I need somebody who can
- 25:26hold space for me. But the thing that I also know
- 25:29is I also need somebody who can put that on a very intentional
- 25:32container, which basically means that this is not something that
- 25:36while it is like a soft spot to land that they allow to go on
- 25:40and on and on and that they kind of like sit in the story with
- 25:42me. I want someone who's like, OK,
- 25:44great. We've had our moment.
- 25:45We talked about that, let's get to it.
- 25:47And I want somebody who like really challenges me in that
- 25:49way. And I often communicate that to
- 25:51people I invest with. I say, listen, like this is how
- 25:53I like to be communicated with. Is that something that you would
- 25:55say you do with clients or like what's kind of the way in which
- 25:58you typically, you know, coach people?
- 26:01And again, sometimes you don't have to ask it.
- 26:02Sometimes you'll just know by watching them, which is
- 26:04something to consider. Another big one is does what
- 26:08they say match what they do? And this is huge, huge, huge,
- 26:14huge. So like when somebody says like,
- 26:17you know, it's all about consistency, it's all about
- 26:20consistency. And then I go to their stuff and
- 26:23they're not being consistent. I'm like, it means you don't
- 26:26embody what you talk about. That's what that tells me.
- 26:30It's like, if you're talking about something, I'd rather you
- 26:33say, listen, like it's all about consistency.
- 26:35And hey, even I struggle with consistency.
- 26:37I'd want to see that in your content because what it means is
- 26:40you're authentic, you're real, you're vulnerable, you're
- 26:43honest, right. I'm not going to invest with
- 26:47somebody that says one thing in their marketing and does
- 26:49something different when they're in the actions.
- 26:53And this is the interesting piece is like you'll see people
- 26:57who coach on specific things like they teach on certain
- 27:01principles, but yet you never see those actions in what they
- 27:05do. So to me, if there's a
- 27:07disconnect between what you say and what you do, my, my hairs go
- 27:12up, right? Like I'm like, OK, like this
- 27:13means to me, there's a little bit of AI don't understand this.
- 27:16So I really look to see, does what they market really match
- 27:21what I feel they're doing and the actions that they're taking?
- 27:24Do I feel like all of their marketing is congruent with the
- 27:28actions they're taking? And this also kind of goes to,
- 27:31you know, a little bit of, you know, inquiring about social
- 27:34proof and results and all those things like if someone says, you
- 27:37know, my happy clients, my happy clients, my happy clients, I'm
- 27:40like, great, show me the social proof, show me the case study,
- 27:42show me the testimonials. Like if you've got such happy
- 27:45clients, show them. I want to see it.
- 27:48Like I want to see the embodiment of what you do if you
- 27:53are somebody who says that you do XYZ, Like I really want to
- 27:57feel like I see that consistency.
- 27:59And it's interesting because like I'll see, you know, when my
- 28:01last coach that I invested with, I literally audited the crap out
- 28:04of his website. And we joke about it now, but I
- 28:07audited, I audited his website because he was saying this, that
- 28:11and the other. And like I remember when he was
- 28:13on his speech, he's like, yeah, you know, I built a couple
- 28:14businesses to like the billions coupled to multi millions.
- 28:17Like this is just what I do. Like it just he blows up
- 28:19businesses and I was OK, that's like a good slogan.
- 28:23Like you've got my attention. But now I'm like, I want the
- 28:25proof. But then I went to his site and
- 28:27it was like literally big companies that I could easily
- 28:29reference. And I was like, whoa, you were
- 28:31responsible for that. So I was like, oh, OK, yeah,
- 28:35yeah, I'm in. So like for me though, I need
- 28:36that verification of there's what you say, but then I need
- 28:39the proof. And so that for me was something
- 28:41I want to make sure that someone's actions are consistent
- 28:45with what they say they do in their marketing is who you
- 28:48market yourself to be actually who you are.
- 28:50And so I try to do my best to kind of ensure that I have seen
- 28:54or witnessed or experienced something in that bucket that
- 28:56helped me feel confident on that client results.
- 28:59This is something around clients.
- 29:00So I look at as well with their client roster.
- 29:05A couple things I want to know. You've helped someone like me,
- 29:09like have you helped somebody in whatever that is for you?
- 29:13So like for me it might be have you helped a female business
- 29:16mentor for another bucket? It might be have you helped
- 29:19somebody who only scales their business using organic
- 29:21currently? Like as in like, do you use a
- 29:23lot of paid advertising? Because for me, I don't do paid
- 29:25ads. So like for me that would be a
- 29:26big distinguishing factor. The clients that you help, for
- 29:30example, like if someone, if you're let's just say your age
- 29:33demographic is like you're really trying to target someone
- 29:36specific and this person has only helped people who were a
- 29:39totally different age bracket. That might be something of note
- 29:42to you. Maybe they've never helped
- 29:44someone in your industry before. So you want to see like is this
- 29:46transferable, right? Like do I feel like you've
- 29:48helped anybody like our company Like, listen, like you can ask
- 29:52someone that question. I have people asking that
- 29:53question all the time. Have you helped a business like
- 29:55me? And I can tell them straight up
- 29:56sometimes no. And then I tell them sometimes
- 29:59yeah, 100% I've helped you know 1525 of you at this point,
- 30:02right. So it really is something that I
- 30:05want you to also feel comfortable to ask people
- 30:07because it's also OK if you go and you decide to invest with
- 30:11that mentor, even if you are the first of your kind of type or
- 30:14category that they've served. It's just more going in eyes
- 30:17wide open. This is what all the all these
- 30:18prompts are about is it's about going in and saying I did my due
- 30:22diligence because the thing I also want to let you know of and
- 30:24listen, this is at least the thing in Canada.
- 30:26So I can't comment to the US, but there is a motto of buyer
- 30:30beware and buyer buyer beware. Basically meaning that it is
- 30:35your job and your responsibility before you make an investment to
- 30:39do your due diligence and actually look into the person
- 30:42you're spending with. So if you're just investing
- 30:44Willy nilly and you're not ever taking a second to breathe and
- 30:48ask yourself some of these prompts I'm sharing, it means
- 30:51you might be investing blind. And guess what?
- 30:53That also means that if things go sideways, you don't really
- 30:57have anybody to blame because we didn't do any research, right?
- 31:00The onus is on the person investing to be aware and
- 31:05conscious of what they're looking at.
- 31:07And it's on the responsibility of the company to effectively
- 31:11and ethically market and morally market and frankly legally
- 31:15market their services correctly so that when people are doing
- 31:19that research, they have the right information to be
- 31:20referencing. So like, I don't feel bad about
- 31:23checking in on any of these. Like I told my last coach, I
- 31:25said, hey, I, I'm going to be honest, I researched your site
- 31:28for like 3 hours last night. I watched your YouTube videos, I
- 31:31listened to your podcast. Like I wanted to make sure
- 31:34because I was spending a lot of money, I wanted to make sure
- 31:37that this was the right step for me.
- 31:39And like again, we work together.
- 31:41So like, it wasn't for me. I didn't feel any way about it
- 31:44because I recognized like it is on me to do this research that
- 31:47if something comes up, I can at least say that I did everything
- 31:50I possibly could have to like quote UN quote, protect myself
- 31:53and try to make the right choice.
- 31:54So this is also the same the way that I equate this to is like
- 31:57investing in a house, like you would get an inspection on a
- 32:00house when you're making a big purchase.
- 32:01So if you're making a big purchase on a coach, why are we
- 32:03not doing the inspection? You're just kind of hoping
- 32:05whatever's behind the walls is hopefully OK, even though the
- 32:08entire house could be covered in mold, right?
- 32:10So like that's how I look at investing with mentors.
- 32:13It's OK to do research. It's OK to ask the hard hitting
- 32:16questions because and it's OK to, you know, look into things
- 32:19because it really is a way for you to protect yourself.
- 32:21So when it comes to clients, I look at their client results.
- 32:24I look at the client outcomes they've generated.
- 32:26I also look at the themes in those outcomes.
- 32:29So like, are they talking in the reviews?
- 32:32Do people feel, do people talk about how supportive they were?
- 32:36Do people talk about the community?
- 32:38Do they talk about what it is that I'm looking for?
- 32:41So like, yes, of course, when you're investing in a business
- 32:43mentor, you want to know that they can make you money because
- 32:45that's obviously part of the things they do.
- 32:48But to me, I don't get distracted by things like that.
- 32:50As long as I see proof of some kind that you've helped people
- 32:53make money, great. I don't, I'm sold on that.
- 32:55That's done. I look at the other things.
- 32:58Do people feel supported? Does the community feel
- 33:00connected? What kind of things do people
- 33:02say that you taught them? What kind of aha moments did you
- 33:05create for the testimonials and case studies you have?
- 33:07If you couldn't market numbers, what are your clients say about
- 33:10you? That matters to me because I
- 33:14then am learning about the experience of the individual,
- 33:17not just the numbers, and what ends up happening.
- 33:20I'm just going to be brutally honest with you.
- 33:22Most mentors leverage the fact that they've got boatloads of
- 33:25numbers and they distract you with the numbers so you don't
- 33:28look to the right, which is the support, the community, the
- 33:32connection, the resources, and all of those pieces.
- 33:35So for me, I don't get distracted by numbers.
- 33:37I want to verify you've hit certain numbers for people of
- 33:39things that I'm looking to do. But other than that, I'm worried
- 33:43about the other pieces, which is the experiential aspect of it
- 33:46and how people felt there. So I want to know you've helped
- 33:49people like me and I want to understand of the results in the
- 33:51case studies that you have proof of.
- 33:52Are these just social proof snapshots distracting with big
- 33:56numbers? Or do I really feel like there's
- 33:58depth here as to what the experience has been and other
- 34:01transformations? And even just to kind of give
- 34:03you a nugget, one of the things that I ask people is to say,
- 34:06listen, if you were to talk about the outcomes that you
- 34:09generate for businesses outside of financial wins, what would
- 34:13those be? And for me, the answer I'm
- 34:16looking for in some aspects is, you know, in, in marketing, we
- 34:20help them to generate great greater brand visibility and
- 34:22greater brand community and help to do that by brand strategy.
- 34:26We help people to, you know, generate more consistent lead
- 34:29flow as a result of organic social media.
- 34:31We help people to be able to create consistent conversions
- 34:34and often increase their conversion rate from, you know,
- 34:36say 50 to 80. We help people to like, you
- 34:39know, like I, I want things that are, talk to me about outcomes
- 34:44that have nothing to do with money.
- 34:47And that shows me like how quick as well someone can think on
- 34:50their feet about what those results are.
- 34:53Because that tells me about again, the depth what I see in
- 34:57the business mentorship space. And again, it's it, I don't want
- 35:01to place big generalized labels, but it's just themes I'm seeing
- 35:05or trends I'm seeing. What I see in the space is that
- 35:08I find there's just a lot of emphasis on the money.
- 35:12And the money is important. And again, you want to see
- 35:15someone has done that, but there's other pieces that are
- 35:19important that you're going to come up against in your
- 35:21marketing, your sales, your delivery.
- 35:23And you want to know, can they assist you with those things?
- 35:25Not just that they had a client that had a great launch and made
- 35:28a boatload of money, right? Like you want to know how
- 35:30they're going to move the needle in your business.
- 35:32OK. So the other thing that I also
- 35:35look at is when I'm looking at their marketing, is it selfish?
- 35:41Is it about them? Like is it like I'm so hot, I'm
- 35:44so great, I'm so rich. Like I'm this, I'm not.
- 35:49I really like working with mentors that are client focused
- 35:55like our clients did blank. We believe that clients have the
- 35:59ability to blank. We're on a mission to help
- 36:01people to do X. Like I wanted to be like, I'm
- 36:05never genuinely ever going to invest in the mentor who's got
- 36:11like, look at my car, look at my watch, look at my house.
- 36:15Like again, cool. Like I'm so excited for you that
- 36:17you did that. Like, obviously it's amazing.
- 36:19Like it is exciting that someone can have those achievements, but
- 36:23your watch is not what I care about.
- 36:27What I care about is how many watches do your clients have?
- 36:30I don't care about your house and the car you drive.
- 36:32As a mentor, I want to look at the cars and the houses that
- 36:35your clients are driving or that your clients are living in.
- 36:39So for me, client focused marketing is a very, very easy
- 36:44telltale sign of the selfishness of the person that you're
- 36:47working with. And I don't believe in general
- 36:50in selfish marketing. I think people can talk about
- 36:52themselves in a way that allows them to translate the value or
- 36:56the points of the person listening has the ability to be
- 36:58impacted by it. But for me, I really look at
- 37:02like is every story you tell is every post you talk about how
- 37:07great you were, how great you were.
- 37:09And like one of the things that I'm really actually very, very
- 37:11cognizant of is mentors that take responsibility for their
- 37:16clients results. Like every time I talk about
- 37:20something, I'm like, yeah, here's what we did with this
- 37:21client. But most importantly, here's how
- 37:24she grew. This is what she did.
- 37:26Here's the Rep she put in right. And so I often want to talk
- 37:30about the the results my clients have generated, but in the lens
- 37:33of them, because here's the thing, yes, as a mentor, we are
- 37:37here assisting and advising and you're in your corner like an
- 37:41Olympic coach, like go, go, go. But they're the Olympians.
- 37:45They are the Olympians. So coaches that take all the
- 37:50ownership for The Olympian that won the gold medal to me is not
- 37:54it not it. So for me, I want to work with
- 37:58people who raise their clients up, who sing their clients
- 38:02praises, who really just showcase their clients and don't
- 38:05talk about like, here's how I how, how I got my client to do
- 38:08this, this, this, this, this. Like talk about how it was both
- 38:11of you linked arms in this process together.
- 38:14Because at the end of the day, they put in a lot of reps and I
- 38:16don't want to be with a mentor also, which is when I just
- 38:19thought of that. I did not have noted down.
- 38:22I am not your marketing tool. I am not your marketing tool.
- 38:27So like I want to know that I'm not just going to be in your
- 38:32program or in your coaching as a way for me to just be like a
- 38:37marketing pawn for you. Like I have clients that I and I
- 38:43will be honest, I have a case studies on ambitious, right?
- 38:47And so I had a client who was like, can you please tag me?
- 38:51Can you please tell people it's me?
- 38:53Like I want to sing your praises.
- 38:55But for me, I don't do that because one of the big things
- 38:58for us is unless a client has actively consented or told us or
- 39:03like frankly asked us to say that it's them, I don't put
- 39:07their name in my marketing. That's why I don't have any
- 39:10named case studies. All of them are anonymous unless
- 39:13they gave me, hey, please tell people it's me.
- 39:17And that's because I don't want to use my clients as my clout.
- 39:22I don't need to do that. And so I also don't want to work
- 39:25with people who do that. I want people who are like,
- 39:27yeah, I've worked with a lot of big businesses.
- 39:29I want their results and their support and their knowledge to
- 39:33be the standout factor, not the resume of the people that they
- 39:36have worked with. If you ask the mentor, that's a
- 39:40different story. But in their marketing, I don't
- 39:42feel like I want to see every other post basically being
- 39:45leveraging of the authority of their clients.
- 39:47And obviously after that small Ted talk, I'm so sorry that you
- 39:50can see how I feel about about that one specifically.
- 39:54Kind of hits on the heartstrings.
- 39:55You know, the other thing I'm also very, very aware of is the
- 39:58stages of growth. So one of the things that I'm
- 40:01really conscious of when I look at hiring a mentor is, is this
- 40:05somebody who can help me now or is it somebody who can help me
- 40:08for different stages of growth? And again, does not say that
- 40:10there's a right or wrong here, but I'm more looking at like, is
- 40:13this a person who's going to be part of my journey for a season
- 40:17or for the entire thing? Like, do I really see going the
- 40:19long haul with them? And again, in different
- 40:23different avenues, different types of support are going to
- 40:25make sense. Like when I was first starting
- 40:26my journey, I was with somebody who was really specifically
- 40:29somebody who helped beginners, like they weren't someone who
- 40:32helped, you know, multiple 7 figure businesses.
- 40:35And that was OK. Like I didn't need that at that
- 40:37time. I wasn't even a six figure
- 40:38business. Like I didn't need somebody to
- 40:40help to go to multiple 7. But then now for myself, like I
- 40:45know how much we've grown as a company and I know how much
- 40:47we've grown as a business. And so I really want to make
- 40:49sure when I invest that I'm investing with people who are
- 40:53somebody that can see the next three stages of growth for me,
- 40:57because I recognize that like the more time I spend with
- 40:59someone, the more understanding to have of my business.
- 41:01And so if we're going deep in this work together, I want to
- 41:05make sure that the way that they operate business is something
- 41:09that would allow me to grow with them.
- 41:11So I don't feel like I'm kind of getting, you know, this phase
- 41:14for 30 days and somebody else for 30 days and like, you know,
- 41:16like kind of having to go all over the place or three to six
- 41:19months for that matter. So I really want to see can the
- 41:22person I'm working with really help me to continue to go to the
- 41:26next stages of growth that I want to go.
- 41:28And there's two ways I look at this.
- 41:29I either can look at have they been able to achieve that thing
- 41:32or have they had clients who've been able to achieve that thing.
- 41:36And the main reason I say them or clients, by the way, like I
- 41:39had a coach who had clients that they had taken to billions of
- 41:44dollars, but like their own business wasn't a billion dollar
- 41:48business. And so I was actually fine with
- 41:50that. Like I, again, I don't obviously
- 41:52need a billion dollar business, but I, I was fine with it
- 41:55because I, I really have learned the perspective around investing
- 41:58when it comes like the person behind behind the machine.
- 42:00And what I recognize as a business mentor doesn't have to
- 42:03be somebody who has done all the things you want to do, but they
- 42:06have to have the ability to showcase that they have the
- 42:09potential to support you in doing that.
- 42:11And so like for me, for example, I have not written a book and
- 42:15yet I've helped 5 people launch books and you know, with those
- 42:20have massive success with their first book launch.
- 42:23I myself don't have a course and yet I've helped people to have
- 42:26half million dollar launches when it comes to their course.
- 42:29The thing that I know about mentorship is it's not
- 42:32necessarily that the person you're hiring needs to be a
- 42:34carbon copy of what you're looking to do, but they do have
- 42:37to have the skill sets and the ability to help someone do it.
- 42:40So back to our example, if you are somebody who wants to be an
- 42:43Olympian, you want to work with a coach who's helped people to
- 42:47be Olympians. And so that's the same thing
- 42:49when it comes to business. So I don't need you to be a
- 42:51duplicate of me, but I need you to have the skill sets that
- 42:54allow me to achieve the goals that I want.
- 42:56And that's the thing that I audit.
- 42:58And then most importantly, I would say, you know, one of the
- 43:00things that I really tune into, and this is probably one of the
- 43:04least tangible, but probably one of the most impactful is when
- 43:08you're talking to this person, how do they make you feel about
- 43:12yourself and about your business?
- 43:14So like when you're in the sales conversation with them of DMS or
- 43:18a call or in person, whatever it might be, do they make you feel
- 43:22shame? Do they make you feel empowered?
- 43:24Do they make you feel like you've been friends for 10 years
- 43:27and like, how are you guys just meeting for the first time?
- 43:29Like how do they make you feel? Do they make you feel safe?
- 43:32They make you feel threatened? Do they make you feel scared a
- 43:34little bit like what comes up for you when you work with them?
- 43:38And I think it's important because you want to remember
- 43:40that that dynamic of how you feel around them is something
- 43:44that is going to be there in your coaching together, right?
- 43:47Like that's kind of like the, the foundational element of your
- 43:50time together. And so I which is the reason I
- 43:53was kind of diving into the marketing side.
- 43:55I really look at when somebody is, you know, going to be a
- 43:59coach that I'm working with. I want to make sure that your
- 44:02marketing makes me feel good. And I also want to make sure
- 44:03like when I leave your stuff, I've never felt more empowered.
- 44:06I've never felt more clear. I never felt more educated.
- 44:08I've never felt more supported. And like that can happen from
- 44:12free stuff. Like I listen to some people's
- 44:14podcasts and I'm like, I would hire that person in a second
- 44:17because of how they make me feel from their podcast, let alone,
- 44:21you know, anything else that I've had that's like connect,
- 44:23like connected touch points to them, right?
- 44:25And so I really believe that like how someone makes you feel.
- 44:29It's the whole classic quote of it's not what you do for people
- 44:32and it's not what you sell and it's not, you know, all those
- 44:34pieces. People only remember how you
- 44:37made them feel. And so the same thing is true
- 44:38when you're working with somebody.
- 44:39How's that person make you feel and do you want to continue to
- 44:42feel that way for the next six months to say three years
- 44:45depending on the level of investment?
- 44:47So those are some of the pieces that I consider and that I audit
- 44:50and I kind of like research when I am investing with a business
- 44:54mentor. Now, those are things that I
- 44:57don't necessarily have to ask them questions.
- 45:00I don't necessarily have to ask them, you know what any of those
- 45:04are directly to them. I don't need to ask them those
- 45:06questions directly. I can search a lot of those
- 45:08things on my own, but there are certain things that I would ask
- 45:13somebody that I'm working with. So I might say, you know, one of
- 45:17the things that I want to know is what do you think in what
- 45:20I've shared about my business? Would you say is the biggest
- 45:23opportunity untapped potential or opportunity for growth that I
- 45:27currently am not focused on? That would be a question that I
- 45:30have. Again, as I said kind of a
- 45:32little bit earlier, another question I ask is if we couldn't
- 45:34have money as a way of obviously achieving success together, what
- 45:39would be in like the different departments of the business?
- 45:41Some things you might look at as kind of ways that I would be
- 45:43able to see that we're making movement or that we're seeing
- 45:46success, right? As in like how do I know I'm
- 45:49making momentum in your offer in whatever that is if it's not
- 45:53connected to financial? And I would probably also be
- 45:56asking something along the lines of, you know, what is one of the
- 46:00top things that you find you support clients with that they
- 46:03typically don't come to you for, but end up leaving with in a
- 46:07sense of clarity, breakthrough, a transformation.
- 46:09So like, I also want to have you see, and like today, obviously
- 46:14there's a list of questions like I have, again, depends on who
- 46:16I'm investing with, what the offering is, what the specialty
- 46:20is. All those pieces matter in the
- 46:22sense of what questions I'm asking.
- 46:24But I'm going to be honest, like I don't think enough people ask
- 46:27questions. And I, it's not a matter of
- 46:29objections, by the way, I ask those questions and I still
- 46:32spend a lot of money, a lot of money.
- 46:35I still ask the questions and spend money.
- 46:38But the thing that I would say is like, I think it's OK to ask
- 46:40those questions. And like, I'm not talking 75 of
- 46:44them talking like 3 or 4. Pick 3 or 4 questions after
- 46:47you've done your research, when you talk to the person to ask
- 46:50them a little bit of just like a, getting their standpoint on
- 46:53it. And I welcome, by the way, these
- 46:57questions as a mentor because I think for me, what I'm actually
- 46:59excited when I hear people ask them because it tells me that
- 47:02there are people who take their investments seriously.
- 47:04And it also allows me an opportunity to really add an
- 47:08aspect of depth to the explanation of like what it
- 47:11looks like to work together and how that could impact them.
- 47:14And so I really just want to empower you to see that like
- 47:18when you hire, the reason I, I use mentor, by the way, and not
- 47:21coach, coach is usually going to be someone who's with you for
- 47:25just giving you the tactical feedback.
- 47:27When you have a mentor, they typically are somebody who's
- 47:30guiding you outside of the strategy as well.
- 47:32Like they're not just guiding you on here, go do ABCDE.
- 47:37They're giving you higher level thinking and a change of a of a
- 47:40thought process that allows you to not only see results in that
- 47:43moment, but also to be able to see results 10X from that for
- 47:46all the next situations that come up.
- 47:48Because they taught you the principal, they taught you the
- 47:50belief and how to think. They didn't tell you what to do.
- 47:53And a lot of coaches are really in the do bucket in the sense of
- 47:56like, go do this, go do this, go do this.
- 47:58But my thing is like, I really like if we at all can and any
- 48:02offer as a, for myself, a mentor, a coach that I like to
- 48:07see how we can hybrid the two, which is I don't want to just
- 48:10tell you what to do because that's just giving you marching
- 48:12orders. Which again, like it's not that
- 48:14I'm not going to give you strategy.
- 48:16But the point is, as a mentor, it's also my job to teach you
- 48:19how to think, not just what to do.
- 48:22And what ends up happening is that when we go into coaching,
- 48:26after coaching, after coaching and we're like, man, I feel like
- 48:28I'm making all these investments into business coaches or, or,
- 48:30you know, programs. And I feel like I'm just like
- 48:33not making movement. That's because you're only
- 48:35getting go do this and then you go do it, go do this and then
- 48:38you go do it, go do this and you go do it.
- 48:40I don't want that. I want someone to teach me how
- 48:42to think. So I literally have a tool in my
- 48:46toolbox that I now go back to my business when they're long and
- 48:49gone and I look at my business and I go, oh, and I can see it
- 48:54through a whole different set of lenses because the tools that my
- 48:58mentor gave me, when you teach people how to think, you give
- 49:02them tools, right? When you just are coaching and
- 49:06you're like, go do this, go do this.
- 49:07All they have is instructions. So the question is, do you know
- 49:11how to build if someone took away the instruction manual?
- 49:15And that's success in coaching to me.
- 49:18And I do feel it's part of the reason that a lot of my
- 49:20investments have been so massively impactful.
- 49:22I go in seeking to learn from someone, how can you shift the
- 49:26way I think, change the way that I see the world, change the way
- 49:29I see business, change the way I see myself.
- 49:32And if you can do that, I know that even when I'm not with you,
- 49:35I'm going to be forever changed in business and I'm going to see
- 49:37the domino results come from that.
- 49:40And so, you know, I really wanted to do as I said, I am
- 49:43here sitting in my, which I found out, by the way, is a
- 49:45Canadian term. Canadians say tuk where
- 49:48apparently Americans say beanie. I'm wearing a beanie.
- 49:52I guess it is. But any who I'm sitting here
- 49:56post walking the dogs because I just had this like download, if
- 50:01you will, when I was on my walk. And I was like, I really feel
- 50:03like when I was investing, I could have used this because I,
- 50:07I really made some investments that were not, not strategic,
- 50:11not research, not thought out and didn't end up being
- 50:15supportive for me. And so I think if I had really
- 50:17taken just a breath to go through this and now that I have
- 50:21this insight, I was like, I just really want to make sure that
- 50:23you were also equipped with some of these resources so you can
- 50:26make really intentional investment decisions and use
- 50:29those to be able to scale your business to even bigger and
- 50:32bigger things. So listen, as always, I want to
- 50:35say a massive, massive thank you to you and just I appreciate you
- 50:38and I thank you for listening and for tuning in every week and
- 50:41for all of your amazing DMS and the messages you guys send.
- 50:43Like it just means the world to me.
- 50:45And listen, I also want to say to kind of a close on today, if
- 50:49you are thinking about investing with myself as a mentor or in
- 50:53any of our ITI programs, use this, go through this audit and
- 50:58say, you know, do I feel like I resonate on this?
- 51:00Do I feel like she cares about this?
- 51:02Do I feel like the program symbolize this?
- 51:03Do I feel like there's these pieces like this is not, I'm not
- 51:06exempting myself from this process.
- 51:08This is actually something I encourage people to do with me.
- 51:10When someone says, hey, I have questions, I'm like, amazing,
- 51:13let's do it. I want to empower you because
- 51:16these are tools and today's even assessment is a tool you can add
- 51:19to your toolbox. So the next time, again, whether
- 51:22it's me or anybody else in your business, the next person you go
- 51:25to take that next step with, you're going to be even better
- 51:27equipped to make a really, really smart next step for
- 51:30yourself and for your business. So with all that being said, we
- 51:33will see you next week and as always, stay ambitious.
