- 0:10Speaker 2: The World's a pigeon podcaes Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. Evan's
- 0:20Speaker 2: not here, but he has issued a statement on DeAndre Hopkins.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We'll read that later.
- 0:24Speaker 3: In the meantime, though, I would love to hear the
- 0:26Speaker 3: official statement. We've all expressed a right, we've all expressed.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Okay, so let's know this is important because a lot
- 0:36Speaker 2: of people are. They need to know what heaven feels.
- 0:39Speaker 2: So go ahead.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Good luck to Mac Jones and Bill O'Brien. Patriots fans
- 0:43Speaker 4: deserve better. Thank you for privacy at this difficult time.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Oh wow, one of the chief Patriots. So they can
- 0:49Speaker 5: buy the stadium and that's all you hear.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's separate and that's the that I know. That was
- 0:54Speaker 2: on one of your shows too, And now we know
- 0:56Speaker 2: where they're spending all their money on the stadium.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Him expect that's part of me for every day.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:02Speaker 5: You think the quarterback is going to be the reason
- 1:04Speaker 5: why they better not because players make any place for him.
- 1:06Speaker 2: This isn't breedy, okay, So you can find ponies.
- 1:09Speaker 5: They haven't been able to.
- 1:11Speaker 2: But it's hard. They found ponies. You called them, no, no, no,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm just that's what I worry about.
- 1:16Speaker 5: You just encapsulated.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But you called those wide receivers pony.
- 1:19Speaker 5: I think the tight ends are ponies too.
- 1:21Speaker 6: Every year it's like something else they're experimenting with, trying
- 1:24Speaker 6: to find the right formula to find success post breed.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Welcome to the NFL without a quarterback, I know, And
- 1:31Speaker 2: no disrespect to Mac you know what I mean, Robin
- 1:34Speaker 2: San Diego via Connecticut. This is Patriot's Unfiltered, all right,
- 1:42Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here at Gillette Stadium,
- 1:46Speaker 2: and the stadium itself is getting ready for Luke Combs,
- 1:49Speaker 2: yes tomorrow and Saturday, so you might hear some baby.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I know people don't like that.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Well you definitely will.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Nothing we can do about it. But it's amazing how
- 1:59Speaker 2: quickly they put those stages up.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I just don't well, it's like you don't know where
- 2:02Speaker 4: the construction ends, and when the concerts set up, takedown begins,
- 2:06Speaker 4: like it's always something right outside our doing.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Anyway that's going on and where going on. We'll be
- 2:12Speaker 2: on for two hours talking Patriots and everything else. Eight
- 2:17Speaker 2: five five pass five hundred ACE ticket houtline and the
- 2:21Speaker 2: email is web radio at patriot dot com. It's Deuce,
- 2:23Speaker 2: it's Paul, it's me, it's Matt Nabooth. Evan's on vacation.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Please respect his privacy during that's difficult time. I have
- 2:31Speaker 2: no idea where or Alex's but.
- 2:33Speaker 5: There were no statements about Lendon Fournette or Darryl Henderson.
- 2:37Speaker 4: I think there were some tweets, but yeah, no statements.
- 2:39Speaker 5: So there's no statements.
- 2:40Speaker 2: There's stuff going on that, you know, as we get
- 2:42Speaker 2: closer to training camp, guys are trickling in here. Rookies
- 2:46Speaker 2: arrive tomorrow, Veterans arrive on Tuesday, is you know, by Tuesday,
- 2:53Speaker 2: so we're getting close and then Wednesday will be out
- 2:56Speaker 2: there live. So it's exciting. But there is some you know,
- 3:00Speaker 2: stories out there, some rumors. But one thing I want
- 3:04Speaker 2: to start to show off right now. I know one thing,
- 3:06Speaker 2: I know one thing, you know, not to say that
- 3:08Speaker 2: we have him. We've spent time, you know, talking about
- 3:11Speaker 2: Bill Belichick in his future and and and that whole thing,
- 3:14Speaker 2: Bill the GM versus Bill the coach, and you know
- 3:17Speaker 2: all that stuff. But I really think it's it's getting
- 3:21Speaker 2: a little crazy. I mean, you know, the amount of
- 3:25Speaker 2: oxygen being used to just talk about Bill Belichick and
- 3:29Speaker 2: will he make it through the season? What's it?
- 3:31Speaker 5: Is he on the hot seat?
- 3:32Speaker 2: How hot is the seat?
- 3:33Speaker 5: That's the biggest thing I think is is Bill on
- 3:36Speaker 5: the hot seat? I did two things this week, one
- 3:39Speaker 5: on the Comcast Show or the NBC Sports Boston Show,
- 3:42Speaker 5: and then I did a podcast with Andy for EEI,
- 3:45Speaker 5: and that's one of the main topics on both of them,
- 3:48Speaker 5: you know, is Bill on the hot seat? And I
- 3:50Speaker 5: think they were kind of disappointed when I said I
- 3:52Speaker 5: didn't think he was.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Well, I think people are. You know, they're they're hoping
- 3:55Speaker 2: for the disaster and that's what it's going to take.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And do you really want the season to be a disaster?
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean, come on, I think we're I get it.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You know, you have to question you know, sports of
- 4:07Speaker 2: sports fans are fans. You questioned decisions, the coach, the owner.
- 4:11Speaker 2: That's what fandom is all about. You know, you have
- 4:15Speaker 2: a right to do that. But I think I think
- 4:17Speaker 2: it's getting a little bit absurd. It's too much.
- 4:20Speaker 5: I was thinking a little bit about it.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I mean, and this is angel I was kind of
- 4:23Speaker 4: considering over the last couple of days, was that, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 4: there's a perception out there, right or wrong, that you
- 4:27Speaker 4: know that the Patriots, Bill, Robert whatever pushed Tom Brady out.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Can they make that mistake again? You know, like like
- 4:33Speaker 4: is that a concern of theirs that you know, let's
- 4:36Speaker 4: say you did get rid of Bill Belichick and he
- 4:38Speaker 4: did go somewhere else and had some success and attained
- 4:41Speaker 4: the record. There is that a concern for ownership to say,
- 4:44Speaker 4: you know, we kind of look like, you know, not
- 4:46Speaker 4: to say that Robert specifically gets blamed for Tom leaving,
- 4:48Speaker 4: but you know, generally the Patriots get blamed that Tom
- 4:50Speaker 4: should have still been here.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Is that something that you look to avoid?
- 4:53Speaker 4: And you say, you know what, I'd rather have a
- 4:55Speaker 4: few seasons of seven eight nine wins seasons and let him.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Break the record.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Then the risk of letting him go do it somewhere
- 5:02Speaker 4: else and then getting kind of blamed for pushing out
- 5:05Speaker 4: both the greatest player and the greatest coach of all time.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Maybe I'm you know, just pie in the sky. I
- 5:10Speaker 2: don't think that should be a factor. I think the
- 5:12Speaker 2: factor should be just performance. Forget about the record or
- 5:15Speaker 2: anything and what he's earned. I mean, I think he's
- 5:18Speaker 2: earned the right to leave on his own terms, just
- 5:20Speaker 2: like I think Brady was. Like Robert Kraft said, I'll
- 5:24Speaker 2: never trade him and I won't put the franchise tag
- 5:28Speaker 2: on him. He'll leave on his own terms, and he
- 5:31Speaker 2: lived up to that, you know, like you can blame
- 5:34Speaker 2: Robert or Bill for forcing him out whatever, but you know,
- 5:39Speaker 2: they didn't trade him and they didn't put a tag
- 5:42Speaker 2: on him. You know, a lot of people criticize him
- 5:45Speaker 2: for that, but I think the same courtesy should be
- 5:49Speaker 2: extended to Belichick. I think he's earned that.
- 5:51Speaker 7: You know.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Now, again, if it's a complete disaster, then Robert Kraft
- 5:57Speaker 2: has to do something, But I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I think they're going to competitive this year, and I
- 6:02Speaker 2: think that I and I can't think of anyone I'd
- 6:05Speaker 2: rather have, so I you know, again, you question especially
- 6:10Speaker 2: last year, absolutely, but I think that's that seems to
- 6:14Speaker 2: be the dominant topic whenever the Patriots, you know, the
- 6:18Speaker 2: page turns to the Patriots, and I think it's a
- 6:21Speaker 2: little bit too much.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I mean, I try to go back to and think
- 6:23Speaker 4: of and you know, I think we generally throw twenty
- 6:26Speaker 4: twenty out of the equation, but you know, it's just
- 6:28Speaker 4: it's the conversation to have of you know, based on
- 6:30Speaker 4: the body of work, and of course we all know
- 6:32Speaker 4: what it is. What's reasonable? What's a reasonable chance that
- 6:35Speaker 4: you have because you know, it's not like you're gonna
- 6:36Speaker 4: let him. I mean, obviously he's he's up in age,
- 6:39Speaker 4: so it's not like he has twenty more years to coach.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But you know, that's the reasonable thing to that you're
- 6:44Speaker 4: asking yourself what would I have given? What would have
- 6:46Speaker 4: said if you asked me in you know, twenty twenty,
- 6:48Speaker 4: what's it going to take? How many years before you
- 6:50Speaker 4: expect to, you know, really be a contender again? You know,
- 6:53Speaker 4: but I think last year was as close to as
- 6:56Speaker 4: you I think you put it like a disaster where
- 6:59Speaker 4: they were still kind of competitive, you know, like it
- 7:00Speaker 4: was kind of a disaster, right, but they were still
- 7:02Speaker 4: kind of competitive. And I'd say kind of competitive, and
- 7:05Speaker 4: that's what I mean.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I mean, I gets the good teams, they they didn't
- 7:08Speaker 2: fare that well, but like you said, in the grand
- 7:12Speaker 2: scheme of the NFL, they were a competitive team. You know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: they weren't getting blown out every week or anything like that.
- 7:18Speaker 4: And it's like the switch that I feel like is,
- 7:20Speaker 4: you know, I do respect Bill so much as a
- 7:23Speaker 4: head coach that I feel like he'll always get you
- 7:25Speaker 4: to that seven, eight, nine win point. Are you willing
- 7:28Speaker 4: to bite the bullet and take a chance on a
- 7:31Speaker 4: two to three win season with a new coach? But
- 7:34Speaker 4: with that comes a chance at a higher draft pick
- 7:36Speaker 4: in those kind of you know, and then you kind
- 7:37Speaker 4: of begin the process again. So I really struggle with
- 7:40Speaker 4: it because you know, I to be honest, I just
- 7:43Speaker 4: I don't think that the drafts were good enough. I
- 7:45Speaker 4: don't think the players have developed well enough. And I
- 7:47Speaker 4: feel like we've been stuck in neutral for basically, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 4: three seasons, right, and and you know, there's that enough
- 7:52Speaker 4: to fire the greatest head coach of all time. I
- 7:55Speaker 4: struggle to make that jump, But I don't think that
- 7:56Speaker 4: it's that crazy. And yeah, I mean, you know often
- 7:59Speaker 4: the distance they even think about it.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's well put. I think I could
- 8:02Speaker 5: I could see arguments on both sides, and I'm not
- 8:05Speaker 5: I don't have my pitchfork out and saying this guy's
- 8:07Speaker 5: got to go and I understand Fred's point. You know,
- 8:11Speaker 5: what he's done matters, Like he's done more than any
- 8:15Speaker 5: coach in the history of the league for your team.
- 8:18Speaker 5: He's done more than any other coach has done for
- 8:20Speaker 5: one single team, you know, So I think that needs
- 8:24Speaker 5: to be part of the equation.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Maybe because I'm getting up there and you know, yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 2: I'm not a good things.
- 8:31Speaker 5: You're probably right. You hired the back nine, you know.
- 8:38Speaker 5: I would like to think that the contributions you know
- 8:41Speaker 5: that Belichick has made matter, but at the same time
- 8:44Speaker 5: that that shouldn't be and I don't think it will be,
- 8:48Speaker 5: you know, in automatic get out of jail free card.
- 8:50Speaker 5: I think, you know, if if the signs are there,
- 8:53Speaker 5: and listen last year to me and I know what
- 8:57Speaker 5: the record was. We don't need to go over why
- 9:00Speaker 5: we all think that the record was probably better than
- 9:02Speaker 5: what we actually saw based on all the backup quarterbacks
- 9:05Speaker 5: they faced. But if you were looking through a prism
- 9:10Speaker 5: of what are some of the signs that you would
- 9:13Speaker 5: see where a coach should be, it should be in
- 9:16Speaker 5: trouble in the season with a couple of guys that
- 9:20Speaker 5: are on the suspended list. You made a very controversial
- 9:25Speaker 5: decision to put defensive coaches in charge of the offense,
- 9:28Speaker 5: and therefore your offense couldn't move the ball all season.
- 9:33Speaker 5: You know. The problems on offense then led to a
- 9:37Speaker 5: lot of public comments from your players sort of being
- 9:42Speaker 5: critical of your offense and on the field, your quarterback
- 9:45Speaker 5: just blatantly disrespecting the coaches, like, I'm not suggesting that
- 9:49Speaker 5: you should be fired, because I don't think I started
- 9:51Speaker 5: off the whole thing by saying I think I kind
- 9:53Speaker 5: of surprised both NBC Sports Boston when I was on
- 9:56Speaker 5: with Trainy the other night and then Andy when they
- 9:59Speaker 5: asked me, I said, no, I don't really think he's
- 10:01Speaker 5: on the hot seat. I think it would have to
- 10:03Speaker 5: be a complete and total train wreck where they win
- 10:06Speaker 5: four games for him to be on the hot seat.
- 10:09Speaker 5: And I think I kind of caught them off guard
- 10:10Speaker 5: by that. But I understand people who think differently than
- 10:15Speaker 5: me because of those things that I just said. Those
- 10:17Speaker 5: are the things that if someone else, you know, like
- 10:20Speaker 5: if Chuck Nole at the end was dealing with that
- 10:23Speaker 5: kind of stuff, people would say the game passed him by,
- 10:26Speaker 5: He's got to go right.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I would just I'd highlight for me to the
- 10:31Speaker 4: end of the Raiders game. That was kind of an
- 10:33Speaker 4: antithesis of a Belichick coach team to me, of having
- 10:37Speaker 4: complete unawareness of the situation in a moment that the
- 10:41Speaker 4: game was being decided. And you know, everything you mentioned true, like,
- 10:46Speaker 4: but just the general lack of discipline that just you know, like,
- 10:48Speaker 4: those are the things that creep up a little bit
- 10:50Speaker 4: that I see that it makes me wonder, is he
- 10:53Speaker 4: losing the team?
- 10:54Speaker 5: Are they still have that firm grasp of the locker
- 10:56Speaker 5: room that they always did.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Continued, continued, and some of that's connected for sure to
- 11:02Speaker 4: the offense, and.
- 11:03Speaker 2: That Patrician is the brain rain that this team has had.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Absolutely and I think these are you know, and it's
- 11:09Speaker 4: a good conversation because these are all things that you
- 11:11Speaker 4: think about of you know. I I don't think it's
- 11:14Speaker 4: easy to coach an NFL team. I don't think it's
- 11:15Speaker 4: easy to build an NFL team, But at a certain point,
- 11:18Speaker 4: you know, you do expect results or at least development.
- 11:21Speaker 4: And that's why this year young guys.
- 11:22Speaker 5: For me, it's funny. I think he is better at
- 11:24Speaker 5: the harder part. I think it's harder to coach an
- 11:26Speaker 5: NFL team than it is to build one. I think
- 11:29Speaker 5: there are guys that I think are just okay, that
- 11:31Speaker 5: have been able to collect players and talent and and
- 11:35Speaker 5: but they're not good enough coaching wise. I think Bill
- 11:38Speaker 5: has the hard part because I still I'm with Fred.
- 11:41Speaker 5: I still think of Bill as you know, if he's
- 11:44Speaker 5: not the best you know anymore, you know, how many
- 11:48Speaker 5: are you putting above them? A couple A couple? Well,
- 11:51Speaker 5: I mean that, but that's not necessarily what I'm talking
- 11:54Speaker 5: about here. I'm just saying right now, coaching, just on
- 11:57Speaker 5: the sideline during the course of a game, who would
- 11:59Speaker 5: you feel better with? You know, Like I'm not saying
- 12:03Speaker 5: I would feel better, but like you're talking about Andy Reid,
- 12:07Speaker 5: maybe Harbaugh, maybe Tomlin, maybe Shanahan McVeigh. Yeah, Okay, there's
- 12:14Speaker 5: a handful of guys that I would say there's an
- 12:16Speaker 5: argument to be made. There ain't that many. No, there
- 12:19Speaker 5: aren't even now like with Bill going you know on
- 12:23Speaker 5: four years now without being able to sort of get
- 12:25Speaker 5: over that hum.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Now that said. Last year, I remember at the beginning
- 12:28Speaker 2: of season, you know, I was just talking about us
- 12:31Speaker 2: and how we approach our critique of the team, and
- 12:35Speaker 2: I said, we have a responsibility to be as objective
- 12:39Speaker 2: and as fair as we can be, you know, because
- 12:42Speaker 2: people rely on like that type of you know analysis.
- 12:47Speaker 2: And I'll say the same thing about going into this season,
- 12:50Speaker 2: It's going to be important for us to be fair
- 12:53Speaker 2: and objective and really like, you know, let people know
- 12:57Speaker 2: what we're really seeing, you know, because there's a lot
- 13:02Speaker 2: of stuff out there and they rely on people that
- 13:06Speaker 2: are close to tell them what's really going on.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Well, I like that's why I like what Paul said
- 13:10Speaker 4: and why I felt like I should add to the Raiders.
- 13:12Speaker 4: There's just you know, signs of coaching not being up
- 13:15Speaker 4: to par or you know, where it needs to be,
- 13:16Speaker 4: or the team just not really being on the same
- 13:18Speaker 4: page with the coach, you know. And again I think
- 13:21Speaker 4: a lot of that is rooted in the decision with
- 13:24Speaker 4: the offensive coaching staff last year, and perhaps that changes
- 13:28Speaker 4: back now we believe in Bill O'Brien. Now the offense
- 13:31Speaker 4: is not having the stupid penalties as much because he's
- 13:33Speaker 4: holding them accountable and his expectations are clearly defined. So
- 13:37Speaker 4: I haven't totally written it off, but you know, like
- 13:40Speaker 4: it's hard to watch the last three seasons like we have, yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 4: and come a lot of anything different than saying that
- 13:46Speaker 4: there's you know, it's got to be better this year.
- 13:47Speaker 4: It's got to be better this year. I don't know,
- 13:48Speaker 4: it's it's got to be better.
- 13:50Speaker 2: People saw it as it was happening, and I'll in
- 13:53Speaker 2: retrospect you look at last year and that that in
- 13:56Speaker 2: the decision. You know, we'll call it the decision and.
- 14:02Speaker 5: That plan.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You know that the effects of that trickle down to everything.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I mean, if you're a guy who's never been an
- 14:10Speaker 2: offensive coordinator before, you're not sure of yourself, and if
- 14:13Speaker 2: you're not sure of yourself, how do you demand of
- 14:16Speaker 2: others if you're trying to figure it out? And then
- 14:20Speaker 2: that trickles down to the mental areas. You're talking about
- 14:22Speaker 2: the mistakes, the lack of discipline, because the guy who's
- 14:27Speaker 2: leading your unit isn't sure of himself, so how can he,
- 14:32Speaker 2: you know, how can he you know, exude that confidence
- 14:36Speaker 2: to the rest of the team. It's it was just
- 14:39Speaker 2: a bad situation.
- 14:40Speaker 4: It's the worst possible position to be in as a
- 14:42Speaker 4: coach in any sport where you know you're you don't
- 14:45Speaker 4: feel like you know what you're doing, or the players
- 14:46Speaker 4: don't believe that you know what you're doing. You don't
- 14:50Speaker 4: have the answers. You don't have the answers to their questions.
- 14:53Speaker 4: And you know, I I forget who the interview was,
- 14:55Speaker 4: a young coach, but they just said, the players just
- 14:58Speaker 4: want to know that you're on your side and there
- 15:00Speaker 4: you're gonna help them. And I think that when they
- 15:02Speaker 4: don't know that you know how to help them, they're
- 15:05Speaker 4: not gonna, you know, believe what you say. They're not invested.
- 15:07Speaker 4: And you know, the things that we saw at the
- 15:09Speaker 4: end of the season are all direct branches of that.
- 15:12Speaker 2: That's why I'm hopeful about O'Brien because he rose up
- 15:15Speaker 2: the ranks, was an offensive coator, was a head coach,
- 15:19Speaker 2: went to college, recently worked with young kids. You know.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Now he's back as an offensive corner. So I think
- 15:26Speaker 2: it's a it's a good path for this particular situation.
- 15:29Speaker 2: This is the guy, this is who you needed to
- 15:32Speaker 2: land that offensive plane this year because we were in turbulence,
- 15:35Speaker 2: and hopefully he can land the plane.
- 15:38Speaker 5: With with Billy Oh. And I think if you were
- 15:40Speaker 5: to look and this is one of the things Andy
- 15:42Speaker 5: and I talked about yesterday on his uh, I'll give
- 15:44Speaker 5: it a plug six rings and Things podcast, as he
- 15:49Speaker 5: kept saying, no fitsy, no problem on vacation.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So you really want Andy and that bunker with you, Absolutely,
- 15:57Speaker 2: absolutely so.
- 15:58Speaker 5: But I had a good time. I always have a
- 15:59Speaker 5: good time with the We talked about five reasons you
- 16:02Speaker 5: think the Patriots will make the playoffs, and Bill O'Brien
- 16:04Speaker 5: has to be on that list. Not because you think
- 16:06Speaker 5: he's so good as an offensive coordinator that he's going
- 16:09Speaker 5: to be responsible for X wins, Like, that's not necessarily why,
- 16:13Speaker 5: and both of us had it at the top of
- 16:15Speaker 5: our list. It's the stuff that Fred's talking about. It
- 16:18Speaker 5: just kind of permeates. You know, there's more of a
- 16:21Speaker 5: professionalism to the system, in the play calling and the
- 16:24Speaker 5: rhythm of what you're doing, and that trickles down, as
- 16:27Speaker 5: you guys were just talking about to the players. And
- 16:30Speaker 5: Mac has to be in a better place mentally right
- 16:32Speaker 5: now than he was this time last year. So if
- 16:34Speaker 5: it's going to be better and it's going to work,
- 16:37Speaker 5: that's going to be a big part of the reason
- 16:39Speaker 5: why I think, all.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Right, let's get to some of the stories that are
- 16:43Speaker 2: out there.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Leonard Fernatt, Darryl Henderson, and.
- 16:47Speaker 5: They had two running backs in for physic yesterday according
- 16:50Speaker 5: to the NFL Wire.
- 16:51Speaker 2: And then the wide receiver from the Jets.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Looks like he's gone to Detroit.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Oh, he's right.
- 16:56Speaker 4: It's one of those Hey, we're going to release him.
- 16:58Speaker 4: And then somebody's like, wait, wait, wait, wait wait, switch.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Spots in the sixth and seventh round, So they slid
- 17:03Speaker 5: up a handful of spots in the He's going to
- 17:06Speaker 5: go to Detroit.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not really surprised they've shown interest in
- 17:09Speaker 4: Fournette before. I mean I think that you know, they
- 17:11Speaker 4: had plans for for the kid that they cut. I've
- 17:14Speaker 4: already forgotten his name, James Robinson. So you know, I
- 17:18Speaker 4: think that they're they're a little bit light there, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 4: like I said on Tuesday Show, though, I mean, in
- 17:23Speaker 4: a perfect world, you'd love to just see Kevin Harrison
- 17:25Speaker 4: and Pierre Strong get a chance and really run with
- 17:26Speaker 4: it and you know, make whoever this potential veteran back
- 17:29Speaker 4: that they bring in, you know, extraneous, and you know,
- 17:32Speaker 4: I think that'd be the perfect scenario. But I do
- 17:34Speaker 4: think that they need an experienced ball carry if.
- 17:37Speaker 2: They went, they need some depth who's better at when
- 17:42Speaker 2: Blunt was here or now? For Nette.
- 17:46Speaker 4: I mean probably blunt as long as he wasn't hitting
- 17:48Speaker 4: the backfield.
- 17:49Speaker 5: I don't know, I don't know, I don't.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Is that type of play.
- 17:54Speaker 5: I actually look at fort because of his ability to
- 17:57Speaker 5: catch the ball. Yeah yeah, I think as ball carries
- 18:01Speaker 5: between the tackles. Yeah, neither one of them excite me.
- 18:04Speaker 5: But Fournette catches a lot of passes.
- 18:07Speaker 4: So it's something. I mean, it's something to work with.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I mean, i'd be fine. Yeah, I think they have to.
- 18:11Speaker 5: You know, let's let's get back to like, you know,
- 18:14Speaker 5: the trickle down from DeAndre Hopkins. Right as soon as
- 18:16Speaker 5: they didn't sign them, everybody turned their tables to who
- 18:19Speaker 5: Dalvin Cook? And you know, Vegas had him at the
- 18:22Speaker 5: height and I was like, this is absurd. These are
- 18:24Speaker 5: the running backs that I would expect. Leonard Fournette, Darryl
- 18:28Speaker 5: Henderson who three four years, four years I think with
- 18:32Speaker 5: the Rams, yeah, sea, you know, and this is the
- 18:35Speaker 5: role like I actually am, you know, four Neet' is
- 18:38Speaker 5: a better player than Henderson, But Henderson has been this
- 18:41Speaker 5: with what they want. He's been a backup guy who's
- 18:44Speaker 5: you know, he can come in plug a hole. He's
- 18:48Speaker 5: always averaged about four four and a half yards of carry,
- 18:51Speaker 5: so he's been reasonably productive in this kind of a
- 18:54Speaker 5: role with the Rams. Those are the kinds of backs
- 18:58Speaker 5: that it doesn't surprise me that they're interested. Are the
- 19:00Speaker 5: reasons that Mike said the James Robinson.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Role didn't work out.
- 19:03Speaker 5: I do think it would be great if we're talking
- 19:06Speaker 5: by week week five or six. So you know who's
- 19:09Speaker 5: really done a nice job is Kevin Harris. He's really
- 19:13Speaker 5: he's filled in. He's been able to rest Stevenson a
- 19:15Speaker 5: little bit, and then you have Pierre Strong and Ty
- 19:19Speaker 5: Montgomery to possibly fill the role so Stevenson doesn't have
- 19:23Speaker 5: to catch seventy balls again like he did last year,
- 19:26Speaker 5: you know, in that way maybe instead of because he's
- 19:30Speaker 5: my guess is Stevenson's gonna knock on the door of
- 19:31Speaker 5: three hundred touches this year. He was like two I
- 19:34Speaker 5: want to say two to eighty ish last year.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Playing a lot more probably passing snaps than he should
- 19:39Speaker 4: play this year too.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Right, So I would like to see that kind of
- 19:43Speaker 5: a combination. But Leondard Fournette, I'm all for it. I
- 19:46Speaker 5: think that's a great It would be a great signing.
- 19:48Speaker 5: We know there's some interest there because they worked him
- 19:51Speaker 5: out last year too.
- 19:53Speaker 4: They got two open roster spots right now, so it's,
- 19:55Speaker 4: you know, should be pretty easy if.
- 19:57Speaker 5: They want to mims By the way I would have
- 19:58Speaker 5: been interested in. Also, you know, a former second round
- 20:01Speaker 5: pick didn't work out with the Jets. He's really done nothing,
- 20:04Speaker 5: you know, in the pros. He's had a couple of
- 20:07Speaker 5: you know, flashes here and there, but to move up
- 20:10Speaker 5: a spot from the set that I think they traded
- 20:13Speaker 5: a seventh rounder for a sixth rounder, that's how they
- 20:15Speaker 5: got them. I definitely would have been interested. Absolutely.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I mean, I just I mean, we've talked about this
- 20:21Speaker 4: is the dividing line between the four guys the receiver
- 20:23Speaker 4: that you know, I mean include I'm gonna clude Thornton
- 20:25Speaker 4: in that as a four NFL receiver, but after that
- 20:28Speaker 4: it's nobody's caught a pass. So I think you need
- 20:31Speaker 4: one more receiver, Like you're one injury away from being like, okay,
- 20:34Speaker 4: now you really need Booty or you know, the other
- 20:37Speaker 4: guys Davis to emerge and take a role. They didn't
- 20:40Speaker 4: really fill Nelson Agalore's kind of spot. I know that
- 20:43Speaker 4: you know, those things are kind of fluid, but I
- 20:45Speaker 4: think that a back and a receiver not going to
- 20:48Speaker 4: be DeAndre Hopkins. But I think those are two editions.
- 20:50Speaker 2: A little bit little personnel news out there. Another thing
- 20:54Speaker 2: that one of your guys said yesterday, I believe it
- 20:58Speaker 2: was yesterday. I don't. I don't know if it's true,
- 21:00Speaker 2: but if it is, I was like, really, and I
- 21:03Speaker 2: guess we should know because we're with the team and
- 21:05Speaker 2: they're not. But they said that Jack Jones. The Patriots
- 21:07Speaker 2: have been sending Jack Jones out to community events.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I just saw him with a he was with mccordy
- 21:13Speaker 4: at something. I saw him with mccordy. There was a
- 21:15Speaker 4: video with that's not I don't know when that was
- 21:17Speaker 4: or what it was. I mean, I did see Jack
- 21:18Speaker 4: Jones was back on Twitter.
- 21:20Speaker 2: In a couple of tweets. Saw that.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Message there.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know what what's going to happen there,
- 21:27Speaker 4: I really don't. I mean, Arnemy just thinks he's going
- 21:29Speaker 4: to be out there and he's not gonna be available
- 21:30Speaker 4: in the media, but he's just gonna be practicing.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I have not seen anything like on the site or anything.
- 21:35Speaker 5: I have all him, but that doesn't mean all due respect.
- 21:39Speaker 5: I'm not as up on all the community events. There
- 21:41Speaker 5: were a lot of them. I twise was down here yesterday. Yep,
- 21:45Speaker 5: Well we still promising me.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Was d Max thing related with im?
- 21:51Speaker 5: I'm not sure what it was.
- 21:52Speaker 4: He was there with with some kids, so I don't
- 21:54Speaker 4: think it was one of our things. I think it
- 21:56Speaker 4: might have been just a d Max solo thing he
- 21:58Speaker 4: brought along, brought him along for. But I don't know
- 22:01Speaker 4: what to expect with me.
- 22:02Speaker 5: It could have been as simple as Devin sort of
- 22:05Speaker 5: reaching out to him and saying, hey, kid, don't you
- 22:07Speaker 5: come with me.
- 22:07Speaker 4: I'll show you what's brilliant important, which would be great,
- 22:10Speaker 4: which is great.
- 22:11Speaker 5: I don't even know.
- 22:11Speaker 4: But I don't even know for sure that that it,
- 22:13Speaker 4: that it's happened in the last couple of weeks.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I was a little surprised that that was said definitively. Well,
- 22:17Speaker 2: I shouldn't be surprised that it was definitively.
- 22:20Speaker 5: I didn't catch that. Was that was that my guy? Mike?
- 22:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it was sending him out to me. Over the
- 22:28Speaker 2: last few years, he's got like he starts to squeal
- 22:30Speaker 2: a little bit, like when he gets excited.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Maybe that's Tony running off on.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe I don't.
- 22:35Speaker 4: See blood pressure rubbing off on That's great.
- 22:37Speaker 5: I had not I had not heard that.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know what to expect with him though,
- 22:41Speaker 4: like Jack Jones like that. I mean, it's the biggest
- 22:43Speaker 4: question probably of of Wednesday. Is he out there and
- 22:46Speaker 4: they letting him practice? You know, that's going to be
- 22:48Speaker 4: the first arrival that will will hopefully.
- 22:50Speaker 5: I still have no idea what to expect in regards
- 22:54Speaker 5: to him on Wednesday.
- 22:55Speaker 4: My feeling right now is he's just gonna be out
- 22:57Speaker 4: there until he can't be out there, you know, and
- 22:59Speaker 4: then if he's got a court hearing while they're in
- 23:01Speaker 4: Green Bay, he's not there for that, but they just
- 23:03Speaker 4: keep practicing.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Think it's a really bad look if something bad happens
- 23:06Speaker 5: after and they keep playing he was out there, you know.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Like in other words, the eighteenth comes around and it's
- 23:12Speaker 5: definitive whatever. I don't even know exactly what the procedures are,
- 23:16Speaker 5: but yeah, I don't know. I have no idea what
- 23:19Speaker 5: to expect.
- 23:21Speaker 2: What other news has come out recently.
- 23:26Speaker 5: Well, one thing that is not really news to us,
- 23:29Speaker 5: because the coaching situation with the coaching titles has sort
- 23:35Speaker 5: of been something that we've been aware of for a while,
- 23:37Speaker 5: but evidently everybody found.
- 23:38Speaker 4: It yesterday, okay, digging on the website.
- 23:42Speaker 5: Yeah, so, I mean, okay, so I was gonna I
- 23:47Speaker 5: meant to ask you off air because I didn't want
- 23:49Speaker 5: to be a lawyer who got was guilty of the
- 23:51Speaker 5: cardinal sin of asking a question that you don't know
- 23:54Speaker 5: the answer to, right, That was what I thought that
- 23:56Speaker 5: we had updated that. Yeah, weeks ago.
- 23:58Speaker 2: We made a decision We're not gonna, like trumpet a
- 24:01Speaker 2: press release out about it here, you know, we just
- 24:03Speaker 2: we put up the titles.
- 24:05Speaker 5: And someone found it yesterday and everybody opined on it
- 24:11Speaker 5: as if it was like, I don't know, but I
- 24:14Speaker 5: have no idea. You don't think I read any of
- 24:16Speaker 5: the opines like it says here, Bill O'Brien.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I mean, there was no there were no surprises.
- 24:23Speaker 5: There's one I think I think Joe Judges.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Joe Judge assistant head Coaches.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Well, we were told that at the time that's what it was.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Some people had no we we've known the title for
- 24:32Speaker 5: a while now. When I've learned that title, it surprised me.
- 24:37Speaker 5: That's what that's what it was billed as.
- 24:40Speaker 2: It's assistant head coach.
- 24:41Speaker 4: The George because.
- 24:43Speaker 5: The traveling right, like the assistant head coach is different
- 24:46Speaker 5: than that. So I don't know what it means.
- 24:49Speaker 4: I think it should have said special teams coordinator.
- 24:51Speaker 5: I could tell you in putting together some of the stuff.
- 24:54Speaker 5: And I'm not going to like quote every single thing
- 24:56Speaker 5: that was involved, but putting together those bios and whatnot
- 24:59Speaker 5: for the yearbook that we're publishing, it's a bigger role
- 25:04Speaker 5: than I thought based on the bio.
- 25:06Speaker 4: I wonder where he's gonna be on game day too, Like,
- 25:09Speaker 4: you know, is he I mean heavily involved on the
- 25:11Speaker 4: special teams And I mean I still go back to
- 25:13Speaker 4: the Ernie Adams Matt Patricia thing that that Bill didn't
- 25:17Speaker 4: have last year. And I mean I think that going
- 25:19Speaker 4: back to the first conversation talk about you know, things
- 25:21Speaker 4: that all added up. I think that that's one too.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Maybe Joe Judge, you know, isn't on the sidelines during
- 25:26Speaker 4: the game day, and maybe he's upstairs like the eye
- 25:28Speaker 4: in the sky kind of thing.
- 25:29Speaker 5: That's if I were Bill Belichick, I get him away
- 25:32Speaker 5: from the team. Well, no team, just get him away
- 25:36Speaker 5: from number ten. Yeah.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Jara has that a very question. He says, does
- 25:40Speaker 2: Bill have anyone to take on the Ernie Adams role
- 25:42Speaker 2: in the booth. It has to be helpful having someone
- 25:45Speaker 2: he trusts watching the clock, et cetera. When Bill is
- 25:48Speaker 2: talking to the defense, there's something else on the sidelines.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Now that Patricia's gone, does he have that support guy?
- 25:53Speaker 5: Well, I wonder who do you think did that last year?
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good quick because Patricia.
- 25:57Speaker 5: If Patricia was on the sideline for the most part.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Maybe he did that too.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Yeah, well any offensive line.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Right, can we put anything else on this guy?
- 26:06Speaker 2: Right? Exactly?
- 26:07Speaker 4: Well, I mean, and I just part of me now though,
- 26:09Speaker 4: realizes too that, like there's no replacing Ernie Adams. Like,
- 26:12Speaker 4: as much as we can say you got to just
- 26:13Speaker 4: put somebody in the Ernie Adams role, that doesn't necessarily
- 26:15Speaker 4: mean you're getting all the random minutia number crunching that
- 26:19Speaker 4: Ernie Adams. So even if you do have Joe Judge
- 26:22Speaker 4: up there, or or you know, if it was Patricia,
- 26:25Speaker 4: you know how much it's probably never really going to
- 26:27Speaker 4: be what it was with Ernie.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Ye all right? Eight five five PATS five hundred is
- 26:32Speaker 2: the A Sticket hotline web radio at Patriots dot Com
- 26:35Speaker 2: is the email address I guess we should just open
- 26:39Speaker 2: it up.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Huh, we can, Hey, training can it's our second and
- 26:42Speaker 4: last show of the off season.
- 26:43Speaker 5: Gave us our half hour, like you want to do.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I was gonna though, mentioned with not signing Hopkins and
- 26:52Speaker 2: now we're playing Nashville and joint practices, that's going to
- 26:55Speaker 2: be interesting. Oh yeah, you know what will that dynamic be?
- 26:59Speaker 4: You know, I mean hopefully he's on the sideline with
- 27:01Speaker 4: a hamstring injury.
- 27:04Speaker 5: Well, see, we do we play the South? We played
- 27:11Speaker 5: the South this year. No, no, no, so we don't
- 27:13Speaker 5: play tennis.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Just a joint joint press.
- 27:15Speaker 5: It doesn't matter then if we were playing, if we
- 27:18Speaker 5: were playing the Titans, you can guarantee that he would
- 27:20Speaker 5: be on the sideline.
- 27:21Speaker 4: With It'll matter for those couple of days if he
- 27:23Speaker 4: like goes off and he's like torching Christian Gazalees sol Over.
- 27:26Speaker 5: I agree, But that's the only way I think it
- 27:29Speaker 5: will matter. Like if he's just out there, fine, If
- 27:33Speaker 5: he's really bad, I think that would be fine. If
- 27:35Speaker 5: he's really good, like Devonte Adams the way you described
- 27:38Speaker 5: him last year, that will not be good. That would
- 27:40Speaker 5: that would not be good around here. That's hard to
- 27:42Speaker 5: imagine that would that would elictit a fred You know,
- 27:44Speaker 5: I'm listening to Paul shows and I'm a little sick
- 27:47Speaker 5: and tired of the the DeAndre Hopkins love.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Yeah that he was just all over the place at
- 27:52Speaker 4: Titans Camp. I mean it's a I mean it's a
- 27:53Speaker 4: few short weeks away.
- 27:55Speaker 2: So yeah, let's go to the ace ticket hutline eight
- 27:58Speaker 2: five five pass five hundred Matthews in New Mexico. What's up, Matthews?
- 28:06Speaker 8: But real quick, I think people are upset that Dron
- 28:09Speaker 8: Mayo didn't get like a defensive coordinator title.
- 28:13Speaker 9: But my questions are.
- 28:16Speaker 8: We see the Seahawks uh throwbacks? And did you guys
- 28:20Speaker 8: like the Great Pands? And is there any chance that
- 28:24Speaker 8: will see those nineties throwbacks?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Thank you guys, Okay, thanks the nineties throwbacks?
- 28:30Speaker 5: The Seahawks look good, the Seahawks. Did you happen to
- 28:33Speaker 5: catch the video? Yeah?
- 28:34Speaker 2: It was pretty good.
- 28:35Speaker 5: I thought the video was really solid retro, really solid. Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 5: But the the nineties throwbacks, which Mike and I are
- 28:44Speaker 5: sort of combs down on, evidently there's a more of
- 28:49Speaker 5: a ground swell in support of those than I had
- 28:51Speaker 5: ever imagined.
- 28:52Speaker 2: This is the whole thing. You know, at the time
- 28:55Speaker 2: people thought they were horrid.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Well, the ninety three ones were horrid. I don't think
- 28:59Speaker 5: anybody he really despised it once they changed the numbers
- 29:03Speaker 5: from red to white.
- 29:05Speaker 2: But even then they they had the stripes. It was
- 29:07Speaker 2: like striped. Yeah, it's like, what is a soccer shirt kit?
- 29:12Speaker 2: It's a kid I'm telling you people, people are sood.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I agree, Fred, I didn't like I say the same
- 29:17Speaker 2: thing about pat Patriot At that time, nobody liked that
- 29:20Speaker 2: damn logo. I'm sorry, but now I don't.
- 29:23Speaker 5: I don't remember a lot of criticism of the logo.
- 29:26Speaker 5: I remember a lot of criticism of the team. I
- 29:29Speaker 5: do to a team that sucked.
- 29:31Speaker 2: But yeah, No, the way it works with throwbacks is
- 29:35Speaker 2: you have to like tell the league like two years
- 29:38Speaker 2: in advance. So I do know that this year's throwback
- 29:42Speaker 2: will be this the red like just it would be
- 29:44Speaker 2: last year's throwback. No, I mean, I don't know what
- 29:48Speaker 2: games they're going to wear them, but they are going
- 29:51Speaker 2: to wear But they haven't changed their throat three times.
- 29:54Speaker 2: They haven't changed their throwback.
- 29:56Speaker 5: Yes, I think you're right. Similar to what you've seen.
- 29:59Speaker 4: In the I love those Seahawks ones. So those were
- 30:02Speaker 4: they did it nice. I mean, I've always I was
- 30:03Speaker 4: a Seahawks fan. That was my b team growing up.
- 30:05Speaker 2: That's the other thing, though, I don't understand like grown men,
- 30:08Speaker 2: how like they're so infatuated by uniforms.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Oh that like completely concur me, like Mike, this is
- 30:17Speaker 5: a win, good job, Seahawks. It's like what I didn't care.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I hear some of that. I mean
- 30:23Speaker 4: because I'm by like, I just like the team. And
- 30:25Speaker 4: that's when I like the teams when they wore those
- 30:26Speaker 4: uniforms and they're like the perfect like they're threading the
- 30:28Speaker 4: needle right now, is like the they're so bad, they're
- 30:31Speaker 4: good right now. And I don't think that the Patriots
- 30:33Speaker 4: nineties uniforms would thread that same needle, you know. I
- 30:36Speaker 4: think they'd be fun to just like, hey, weren't they
- 30:38Speaker 4: terrible to wear for like one game?
- 30:40Speaker 5: But I don't need them, like working in there's a
- 30:41Speaker 5: nostalgic element that I certainly fall into. Like the late
- 30:45Speaker 5: seventies early eighties, I like those uniforms better. I thought
- 30:49Speaker 5: they had more color and whatnot than what they wear today.
- 30:52Speaker 5: But I agree with Fred's larger point, and there were
- 30:55Speaker 5: people there's that guy on ESPN, that Paul Lucas guy
- 30:59Speaker 5: like there as that like study.
- 31:02Speaker 4: They find all the movement and it's amazing.
- 31:08Speaker 5: I was leaving that out, but I just don't understand
- 31:11Speaker 5: how anybody can be that passionate about you.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Right, have a photo more of this and then.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Come on, Well, I don't know were you when you
- 31:20Speaker 4: played sports? Were you into what you wore and like,
- 31:22Speaker 4: because I mean, hockey equipment is a big thing, so
- 31:24Speaker 4: well you didn't like have the right tennis racket, like
- 31:26Speaker 4: because I always felt I didn't the right racket that was.
- 31:33Speaker 5: I will say we have home. In high school, we
- 31:35Speaker 5: had home and away you know, baseball uniforms like everybody else, right,
- 31:39Speaker 5: and the whites were the home whites I always thought
- 31:44Speaker 5: were kind of sharp, like they had a big red
- 31:46Speaker 5: e on the side with a small number and then
- 31:48Speaker 5: a big number on the back. The away shirts were
- 31:52Speaker 5: red and they said effort on the front with a
- 31:53Speaker 5: small number on the front. And my junior year, the
- 31:57Speaker 5: coach decided we're just gonna wear the reds all the time.
- 32:00Speaker 5: And I hated it, like I was like, no, no, no,
- 32:03Speaker 5: why why are we not like to Mike's point like, no,
- 32:05Speaker 5: I did. I didn't like it.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Can't performing this?
- 32:09Speaker 5: I didn't say that, I No I did. I went
- 32:13Speaker 5: up to him, I was like, why we're not wearing
- 32:14Speaker 5: the home uniforms ever? And he goes, no, I like
- 32:16Speaker 5: these better, And I'm like, but but whatever.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 32:19Speaker 5: Are you democracy pal? All right? If you want to
- 32:24Speaker 5: do that?
- 32:25Speaker 10: Good?
- 32:25Speaker 4: Well, I mean I come from hockey, which I mean
- 32:27Speaker 4: all the hockey nerds to listen to this. It's like,
- 32:29Speaker 4: what kind of laces do you do? What's the transition
- 32:31Speaker 4: from your skate to your shin pad? How are you
- 32:33Speaker 4: taping your shim pad? What kind of gloves you have?
- 32:35Speaker 4: How long are your gloves?
- 32:36Speaker 5: Do you have?
- 32:37Speaker 2: The shirt?
- 32:37Speaker 5: A little little tuck.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Stirrups high low?
- 32:42Speaker 5: Well, I went through transitions with this when I When I.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Was you're just like me, No like transitions.
- 32:49Speaker 5: It was more it was more of a good luck
- 32:52Speaker 5: thing than than anything. But I was very I was
- 32:55Speaker 5: very conscious high school, like sort of growing into high
- 32:58Speaker 5: school and a little after that high then they transitioned
- 33:03Speaker 5: to low and you wore like I used to wear
- 33:05Speaker 5: my pants up around my knees, you know, and then
- 33:09Speaker 5: that kind of went away, and everybody wore the pants
- 33:11Speaker 5: low with the with the smallest stirrups, and then the
- 33:13Speaker 5: stirrups kind of went away. You just wore a sock
- 33:16Speaker 5: and then they kind of came back up again. So
- 33:18Speaker 5: I kind of went full circle on the stirrups. But
- 33:21Speaker 5: I had to have a specific shirt underneath that they
- 33:24Speaker 5: had to pitch. They never wore the same shirt the
- 33:26Speaker 5: day I pitched as I did the other days.
- 33:28Speaker 4: Step on the lines, that's that's just stupid.
- 33:30Speaker 2: That's more.
- 33:31Speaker 4: This is more.
- 33:31Speaker 5: We're getting always always ran out to the mound and
- 33:35Speaker 5: walked off that always, never ever buried from that.
- 33:39Speaker 4: You can never run off the mound. That would be
- 33:41Speaker 4: a good book.
- 33:42Speaker 5: No, it looks like you're pouting off the field and
- 33:47Speaker 5: run right into the dugouts. Believe me, there were times
- 33:49Speaker 5: I wanted to, but no, there was There was one
- 33:51Speaker 5: time that I threw my glove from the third baseline
- 33:53Speaker 5: into the dugound, which I regretted.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I feel like tennis reckets was a huge thing, like have.
- 34:00Speaker 4: But let's transition a little. I mean, but they're kind
- 34:03Speaker 4: of related. It's like the look, it's the you know,
- 34:05Speaker 4: how do you feel do.
- 34:06Speaker 5: You remember back in the day with football Fred you
- 34:08Speaker 5: had like the girdle pads. Sure, okay, so they were
- 34:11Speaker 5: like the foam at the top. Yeah, but I definitely
- 34:15Speaker 5: went through a phase where I tucked my shirt in
- 34:17Speaker 5: inside the Oh yeah, you have the pad had like
- 34:22Speaker 5: the top of the pads. Yeah, oh yeah. Yeah. See.
- 34:26Speaker 5: I was always jealous of the kids.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Who were like, would wear no shirt underneath them, would
- 34:29Speaker 4: just have their you know, six pack, because.
- 34:31Speaker 5: I didn't want Paul couldn't do that. I couldn't. I
- 34:34Speaker 5: couldn't do that either.
- 34:35Speaker 4: I was always jealous of those guys. How nice it
- 34:37Speaker 4: must be, just you know, the.
- 34:38Speaker 5: Pad on I was always I was always what you
- 34:40Speaker 5: would say, not tight.
- 34:46Speaker 2: All right, Uh, let's see who's up next. Jason's in Connecticut.
- 34:50Speaker 2: What's up Jason?
- 34:53Speaker 8: Hi, gentlemen.
- 34:54Speaker 11: Uh, first time, long time.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 34:58Speaker 11: So I have a quick story and then a question.
- 35:01Speaker 11: But the first thing that I want.
- 35:02Speaker 8: To say is that, Paul, you.
- 35:04Speaker 11: Were my absolute favorite sports personality in the entire market. Wow,
- 35:09Speaker 11: I listen for you andhan when I.
- 35:14Speaker 5: Thank you, I appreciate that. Really, that was very nice.
- 35:18Speaker 5: Thank you. Jason. I'm like taking aback.
- 35:21Speaker 11: Well, you've earned it. I mean, I can't be the
- 35:23Speaker 11: only person in the market that thinks.
- 35:25Speaker 5: So you know, I think you might be.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you're the one.
- 35:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean certainly the only one not related to me.
- 35:34Speaker 11: So quick story. My son just finished first grade. Matt
- 35:38Speaker 11: you're going to want to have the cool story. Drop ready,
- 35:40Speaker 11: proply I just finished first grade. And you're all fathers,
- 35:45Speaker 11: so you know that when ah, when a boy is
- 35:49Speaker 11: that young, then you know what they're talking about maybe
- 35:52Speaker 11: fifty percent of the time and the other half of
- 35:55Speaker 11: the times like whatever. Kid, So he comes home and
- 36:00Speaker 11: he's like, Dad, like, there was somebody from the Patriots
- 36:05Speaker 11: at my school. And I'm like, well, that's that'd be
- 36:08Speaker 11: awfully strange, Like how do you know that? And he's like, oh,
- 36:11Speaker 11: he was wearing a Patriots shirt. And I'm like, well, buddy,
- 36:14Speaker 11: anybody could wear a Patriots shirt. You don't have to
- 36:15Speaker 11: be on the Patriots. And so I did a pretty
- 36:18Speaker 11: good job of convincing him that he was wrong. And
- 36:21Speaker 11: I opened up his backpack and in his backpack is
- 36:24Speaker 11: a book and it's by Malcolm Mitchell, and like moly,
- 36:27Speaker 11: like they had an author visit today and that author
- 36:30Speaker 11: was author was Malcolm Mitchell, and this kid sure told me,
- 36:34Speaker 11: and I was absolutely wrong, So I thought that was
- 36:37Speaker 11: pretty cool.
- 36:38Speaker 5: Yeah, Malcolm Mitchell, solid guy. Mike and I got a
- 36:40Speaker 5: chance to do a long viewing of Super Bowl whatever.
- 36:44Speaker 5: The one that we came back from twenty eight to
- 36:45Speaker 5: three is fifty one. Yeah, he's a really good guy,
- 36:49Speaker 5: Malcolm Mitchell.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Too bad about his injury. Yeah, what's your question?
- 36:52Speaker 11: Exacinitely what I was going to ask that relates directly
- 36:55Speaker 11: to my question, which is, if he didn't get injured,
- 36:58Speaker 11: do you think he would have really had a career
- 37:01Speaker 11: do you think.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, would have been a solid I think a solid,
- 37:05Speaker 5: complimentary receiver.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Leonard Myers, Yeah, type of player do you think.
- 37:10Speaker 12: Might have the narrative Leonard Morris, Brandon LaFell like that
- 37:18Speaker 12: kind of you know, just another you know, like I
- 37:21Speaker 12: would never say you would never have been probably the
- 37:23Speaker 12: number one unless you didn't have a good offense.
- 37:25Speaker 5: But I think he always would have been a contribute
- 37:27Speaker 5: David Gibbons's just like a contributing kind of receiver.
- 37:30Speaker 4: How many times Brady went to him in that game,
- 37:32Speaker 4: you know, like end of his whole gaear was starting
- 37:34Speaker 4: to come on, like.
- 37:34Speaker 5: He was he was he was a good player. Yeah,
- 37:37Speaker 5: he was good, not great, but good.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Thanks Jason.
- 37:39Speaker 5: I think he would have been Julian Phoenix.
- 37:42Speaker 2: From Saugus right sin. I was listening to The Kirk
- 37:46Speaker 2: Minihan Show in the Wednesday seven, nineteen episode. At about
- 37:50Speaker 2: the hour and eight minute mark, they were talking about
- 37:53Speaker 2: the Belichick hot seat. Kurt said that Paul is one
- 37:56Speaker 2: of the top five media nice guys, and his guest said,
- 38:00Speaker 2: Paul is an excellent writer. Whatever anyone thinks of Kirk.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I had a super proud parent moment. As I've been
- 38:06Speaker 2: listening to you guys since I got my first iPod
- 38:09Speaker 2: in eight I found you searching Patriots on the podcast app.
- 38:13Speaker 2: As always, your content is appreciated, keeping the fantastic work.
- 38:16Speaker 2: So yeah, so that's exactly what the caller was saying.
- 38:19Speaker 5: And this was brought to my attention yesterday by a
- 38:22Speaker 5: buddy of mine. And like I do, like Kirk, and
- 38:24Speaker 5: you know, we did get along reasonably well. I don't
- 38:27Speaker 5: pretend to have known him exceptionally well, we did some
- 38:30Speaker 5: shows together and whatnot. But I took that as a
- 38:32Speaker 5: big compliment coming from him, because I know he tend
- 38:36Speaker 5: to everybody. Yeah, he tends to be critical of everyone
- 38:39Speaker 5: and everything, so I know they were, you know, Matt,
- 38:42Speaker 5: because Matt Morrell is a mini fan, so I knew
- 38:45Speaker 5: that he would be sort of up to speed on this,
- 38:50Speaker 5: and he played me the clip, and as I thought
- 38:52Speaker 5: when I heard my friend sent me this, you know,
- 38:55Speaker 5: Kirk Manahan just said that you were one of his
- 38:57Speaker 5: top five nice guys in the business. And I said
- 39:01Speaker 5: that had to have emanated from them making fun of
- 39:03Speaker 5: me for something, and it's true. They were. They were
- 39:07Speaker 5: kind of talking about the fact that I e. I
- 39:11Speaker 5: was so far scraping the bottom of the battle that
- 39:14Speaker 5: they had to get down to Perillo to get They
- 39:15Speaker 5: were quoting Perillo about something. I was like, that's a
- 39:19Speaker 5: bit of a shot. But then Kirk kind of rallied
- 39:22Speaker 5: to my defense, and then they were just talking about
- 39:24Speaker 5: how hard it is, like what Fred was talking about.
- 39:27Speaker 5: We need to do the best we can to be
- 39:29Speaker 5: as objective as we can to get that kind of legitimacy.
- 39:33Speaker 5: And you know, like Kirk said, you know, I'm sure
- 39:35Speaker 5: that if Paul finds out that they're firing Bill Belichick,
- 39:38Speaker 5: he can't report that, which is that's correct, Probably true,
- 39:42Speaker 5: that's correct, Probably true.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Yeah, great writer, though that would that's the one that
- 39:46Speaker 4: would have stuck with me. I'm like, anytime you get
- 39:47Speaker 4: a writing compliment and the.
- 39:49Speaker 5: Guy, the guy who was moving fun anymore, I mean,
- 39:52Speaker 5: the guy who was making fun of me said that, Yeah,
- 39:55Speaker 5: so he's a great writer.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Who was the other guy?
- 39:57Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Matt doesn't even read, so take that as a ca him.
- 40:00Speaker 5: His name is Montante.
- 40:01Speaker 4: He's Jerry Callan's producer.
- 40:05Speaker 13: That's his name, Montante.
- 40:06Speaker 5: Like share just goes by Mikett.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Let's go to haven't heard that's a big day for me, Paul.
- 40:14Speaker 5: You get a lot of flower Store, aren't you here? Deservedly?
- 40:16Speaker 5: So I know something's coming in the second half of
- 40:18Speaker 5: this show.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Melvin's in Tennessee. Haven't heard from you in a while, Melvin?
- 40:21Speaker 2: What's up, sweet kid?
- 40:23Speaker 10: I was going on, Hey, I was just going to
- 40:27Speaker 10: talk about, like, of course, the state of the team
- 40:30Speaker 10: real you all talked about a lot on Tuesday, but
- 40:34Speaker 10: like a team that constructed to be a really good defense,
- 40:38Speaker 10: even if we're going to make some projections there, but
- 40:40Speaker 10: let's say the Patriots aretist really great defense or whatever,
- 40:44Speaker 10: how far did those teams actually normally go? You know what,
- 40:48Speaker 10: I'm saying, like, so a team that's really good on defense,
- 40:51Speaker 10: is that a couple of things has been able to
- 40:52Speaker 10: do it absolutely Denver, I think Seattle maybe made a
- 40:57Speaker 10: super Bowl world without allowing the team to score really
- 41:00Speaker 10: over twenty. They have to go all the way back
- 41:02Speaker 10: to maybe possible. So the point is like, even if
- 41:05Speaker 10: they are really good on defense, if you it's gonna
- 41:09Speaker 10: they win ten something games, they go to the playoffs,
- 41:13Speaker 10: you might be able to scrape a win down, kind
- 41:15Speaker 10: of like San Francisco and Dallas had that kind of
- 41:18Speaker 10: rock fight kind of game and then it comes to
- 41:20Speaker 10: that shootout and normally that team that's defensively structured can't
- 41:24Speaker 10: keep up. So that's kind of like the safe super
- 41:28Speaker 10: Bowl for any team that's constructed like that. It's kind
- 41:32Speaker 10: of hard for me to do opt the type of
- 41:34Speaker 10: teams normally, if they can make the playoffs, they normally
- 41:37Speaker 10: win a game and then they make that exit. So
- 41:39Speaker 10: we all know our record when other teams score over
- 41:41Speaker 10: twenty something points or whatever.
- 41:42Speaker 14: It is like that.
- 41:43Speaker 10: So as great as a defense is, that's great. I'm
- 41:46Speaker 10: not saying it doesn't matter, but I mean what you
- 41:48Speaker 10: do here you can score, you have.
- 41:50Speaker 5: To have a competent offense, and certainly you're gonna be
- 41:53Speaker 5: able to be competitive and win some games because your
- 41:56Speaker 5: defense is that good. If it is that good, but
- 41:59Speaker 5: the tea if you have no offense, then what happened
- 42:02Speaker 5: to San Francisco when the NFC championship is going to
- 42:05Speaker 5: happen to you? They had no I mean no, I'm
- 42:09Speaker 5: not blaming them. They were down in the fourth quarterback
- 42:11Speaker 5: you know, a few teams could overcome at.
- 42:14Speaker 10: Yep, right, And I'm just using them for an example
- 42:17Speaker 10: that was even yeah, we're using we're using them, But
- 42:20Speaker 10: they got a hell of good peoples on offense too.
- 42:21Speaker 10: It would have been a different game had that been
- 42:23Speaker 10: a scored. But I mean that it's just it's just
- 42:25Speaker 10: really tough to do. It's nothing, nothing hard. The way
- 42:28Speaker 10: they're constructed in the NFL today is just really hard
- 42:31Speaker 10: to really make a serious push and championship with teams
- 42:37Speaker 10: that's heavily structured on defense. And not to speak that
- 42:40Speaker 10: you are third or fourth probably your own division. So
- 42:44Speaker 10: just fight fight offense with a good offense. I hate
- 42:47Speaker 10: fighting offense with a good defense. It'll it'll do a
- 42:50Speaker 10: little bit for some part, But like I said, it
- 42:52Speaker 10: just cuts up to you. So unless they brew me wrong,
- 42:55Speaker 10: we'll see what they can do. But I can't get
- 42:57Speaker 10: too very excited about a deep playoffs.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think to say goes you know,
- 43:02Speaker 2: a good a good offense is a good defense. But
- 43:05Speaker 2: I don't think it goes the other way. A good
- 43:07Speaker 2: defense is a good offense.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Yeah, now, Patriotstine. It used to be that way. Yeah,
- 43:12Speaker 5: like football forever was. You know, good defense will be
- 43:16Speaker 5: good offense, and good defense will help as sagging offense travels, right,
- 43:21Speaker 5: you know all those things. I just think it's gotten
- 43:23Speaker 5: so lopsided in terms of what wins in the game
- 43:28Speaker 5: over the last ten to fifteen years that it's hard
- 43:32Speaker 5: to imagine that happening very often. It can happen. There
- 43:35Speaker 5: will be a game this year that they're going to play,
- 43:37Speaker 5: could happen. Let's just say the opener Philadelphia, where the
- 43:41Speaker 5: defense is going to hold them to like, you know,
- 43:44Speaker 5: twenty points, nineteen point and everybody's like, see, you know what.
- 43:48Speaker 5: I don't think they'll be able to do that eleven
- 43:50Speaker 5: times when they because I think they play like eleven
- 43:53Speaker 5: reasonably productive quarterbacks. I don't think they'll be able to
- 43:57Speaker 5: do that you know, more than twice against those teams,
- 44:01Speaker 5: so they need to score.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Offense is a better predictor of your Super Bowl chances. Like,
- 44:05Speaker 4: I mean, that's how I'm not putting a lot of
- 44:06Speaker 4: thought into these numbers, but I would say, you know,
- 44:08Speaker 4: generally speaking, it's like I would probably say there's ten
- 44:11Speaker 4: to twelve championship defenses, but maybe only five or six
- 44:16Speaker 4: championship offenses. You know, like there's definitely some really good
- 44:19Speaker 4: defenses out there, but they just don't have the firepower
- 44:22Speaker 4: to you know, when the Kansas City AFC Championship happens
- 44:24Speaker 4: to be able to keep up, they would never would
- 44:26Speaker 4: have gotten through that game much less. You know, then
- 44:28Speaker 4: you get to the Super Bowl against the Rams and
- 44:29Speaker 4: you had a chance to, you know, defensively shut them down.
- 44:32Speaker 4: But it's just so much of it is a situational
- 44:34Speaker 4: who are you playing, who's available that week? Here's one
- 44:37Speaker 4: play at the end of the game. Does your guy
- 44:39Speaker 4: make it or not? It's not really is your defense
- 44:41Speaker 4: great or not, It's just whether or not one guy
- 44:42Speaker 4: makes a play. And that's usually what it comes down to.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Well, EM's a fellam, what's up? Wellum, how you doing
- 44:49Speaker 2: all right?
- 44:50Speaker 10: Good.
- 44:52Speaker 8: All right, I'm sorry, I think the area is kind
- 44:55Speaker 8: of big. Yeah, okay, question is man, I just I
- 45:05Speaker 8: think I didn't talk about this. I mean, even though
- 45:07Speaker 8: y'all did talk about DeAndre Hopkins, doesn't y'all didn't say
- 45:11Speaker 8: just that just the second time that they passed out
- 45:13Speaker 8: opportunity of getting him. Yeah, I mean the first time
- 45:16Speaker 8: was when you could have got either him or Stefan Digg.
- 45:20Speaker 8: But then this time they didn't get him, you know,
- 45:24Speaker 8: this time and now he's what thirty four, he'll be
- 45:26Speaker 8: thirty one, but he can start. So so I mean
- 45:31Speaker 8: just going with what we got. It is what it is.
- 45:33Speaker 8: But my second part is like I was a little hardst.
- 45:38Speaker 10: Going last time.
- 45:39Speaker 8: I called it because I was just upset every time
- 45:41Speaker 8: the bill do free just eve in the draft or whatever.
- 45:43Speaker 8: I just I just get frustrated, you know. It's just
- 45:47Speaker 8: I mean, no harm chords it though, But I just want.
- 45:49Speaker 14: To say that.
- 45:52Speaker 8: If if he has a bad season of them, if
- 45:55Speaker 8: we're eight, nine, three and fifteen or even or nine whatever,
- 46:00Speaker 8: remove him a game, let's keep him as the coach.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's not happening. He's either all in or
- 46:06Speaker 2: he's out. I actually Okay, I mean, yeah, you're breaking
- 46:13Speaker 2: up a little, William, Sorry about that.
- 46:14Speaker 5: I actually think, you know, another element of this with
- 46:20Speaker 5: the Belichick hot seat that you opened with Freddie has
- 46:23Speaker 5: been you know, will it end badly? And I do
- 46:28Speaker 5: think that more than likely behind the scenes, there won't
- 46:30Speaker 5: be any you know, love lost, but I can see
- 46:35Speaker 5: a scenario where that's how it ends. Like, I do
- 46:38Speaker 5: think that Robert Kraft is cognizant of how great Belichick
- 46:43Speaker 5: has been and what he's done for the organization, and
- 46:45Speaker 5: I think he has tremendous respect for his accomplishments. So
- 46:49Speaker 5: he's probably not just gonna want to say, well, you know,
- 46:51Speaker 5: you didn't win, so you're fired. I think it'll be
- 46:54Speaker 5: something like that, Well, what if we what if we
- 46:58Speaker 5: took away your final say, what if we hired you know,
- 47:03Speaker 5: what if we made Elliott Wolfe the full or Matt
- 47:06Speaker 5: grow the full time general mano? What if we hired
- 47:09Speaker 5: some personnel chief to come in and oversee everything and
- 47:13Speaker 5: you just coach. I'm a fred I don't think it'll work,
- 47:16Speaker 5: but I think that might be, yeah, Robert starting point.
- 47:20Speaker 5: Robert might know that right right, it's not going to
- 47:21Speaker 5: work with the end game is going to be. You
- 47:23Speaker 5: start making working conditions a little bit more difficult, and
- 47:26Speaker 5: that maybe greases the skids. I think that could happen
- 47:29Speaker 5: something like that. I don't mean right now, I just
- 47:31Speaker 5: mean that that could be how it ends.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I mean, I mean, I think directly related
- 47:35Speaker 4: to that. It's just, you know how I mean, I'd
- 47:37Speaker 4: say it till I'm blue in the face of the
- 47:39Speaker 4: you know, needing the young guys to develop this year,
- 47:41Speaker 4: and if that doesn't continue to happen, you know, it's
- 47:44Speaker 4: just it's more of an indictment of you know, look,
- 47:47Speaker 4: Casario left, you brought in, you know, Mac grow, you
- 47:49Speaker 4: have a whole new kind of personnel department. We're giving
- 47:53Speaker 4: these guys a chance. We're giving their players that they
- 47:55Speaker 4: selected a couple of years to develop, and you know,
- 47:58Speaker 4: if it doesn't happen, then you know, where where do
- 47:59Speaker 4: the changes go?
- 48:01Speaker 2: So of all the things we've talked about so far,
- 48:03Speaker 2: what do you think is elicited the most emails?
- 48:06Speaker 5: Me and Kirk Minihan, Oh, uniforms?
- 48:10Speaker 2: What else? I'll get to them later.
- 48:12Speaker 5: I was joking.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Darryln Virginia writes in I'd like to preface my email
- 48:16Speaker 2: by saying I love Bill Belichick, but he has me
- 48:19Speaker 2: on the ropes. My question is, are fans overlooking how
- 48:23Speaker 2: difficult it is to be a head coach in the NFL.
- 48:25Speaker 2: It has to be hard to build a stable system,
- 48:28Speaker 2: develop the team, and flip the roster and coaching staff
- 48:31Speaker 2: when things go wrong. Lastly, what's the threshold unquestionable decisions?
- 48:35Speaker 2: The compilation of our personal decisions over the last five
- 48:38Speaker 2: or six years outside of Duggar and Gonzo don't give
- 48:42Speaker 2: me a warm and fuzzy when it comes to doing
- 48:44Speaker 2: what's in the best interest of the team. So I
- 48:47Speaker 2: guess he's saying, I don't know, audience undecided whether or
- 48:51Speaker 2: not he wants to keep build.
- 48:53Speaker 4: It seems like he's doing what everybody's doing and kind
- 48:55Speaker 4: of weighing all the different.
- 48:56Speaker 5: Yea and the whole thing, you know, ending badly. I
- 48:59Speaker 5: just wanted to sort of put a bow on that, like,
- 49:01Speaker 5: I think that when it does end, let's say that
- 49:03Speaker 5: it ends before he breaks the record. I think once
- 49:06Speaker 5: he breaks the record, I think we can all sit
- 49:08Speaker 5: there and say, like, Okay, well what the time, you know,
- 49:11Speaker 5: But if it ends before he breaks the record, my
- 49:14Speaker 5: guess is it's gonna be Bill will resign. It's not
- 49:18Speaker 5: going to be a firing.
- 49:19Speaker 4: No.
- 49:20Speaker 5: Now, it may be a quote unquote resignation that you
- 49:25Speaker 5: read between the lines on you know, but I don't
- 49:28Speaker 5: think it's going to be a public firing. I just
- 49:30Speaker 5: don't see it again unless it just completely bottoms up.
- 49:34Speaker 4: It'd be interesting to see how the fans kind of
- 49:36Speaker 4: evolve on it, because so much Eyre is kind of
- 49:37Speaker 4: directed towards him right now, and you know, and there
- 49:40Speaker 4: were certainly a segment of the fan base that was
- 49:41Speaker 4: upset when Brady left too, But you know, now that
- 49:43Speaker 4: Brady's retired, it seems like the love festus back on
- 49:46Speaker 4: with New England, and I just I wonder what it
- 49:48Speaker 4: will be like with Bill and that, you know, like
- 49:50Speaker 4: after whenever he does leave, when he does come back
- 49:53Speaker 4: and all the you know, awards and Hall of Fame
- 49:55Speaker 4: inductions and all that stuff starts to happen.
- 49:57Speaker 5: The fan you know, are the fans right back on.
- 49:59Speaker 4: He ours he's the greatest coach of all time, and
- 50:02Speaker 4: it just like they are with Brady or I don't know,
- 50:04Speaker 4: I just always sense a level of resentment towards him
- 50:07Speaker 4: that just never really existed with Tom Brady.
- 50:09Speaker 5: There are still people. It's a smaller group, it's a
- 50:11Speaker 5: much smaller group, but there are still people. I had
- 50:14Speaker 5: some of my my timeline, by the way, who knew that,
- 50:17Speaker 5: like you know, like things like not signing DeAndre Hopkins
- 50:22Speaker 5: could elicit the amount of it was My Twitter feed
- 50:27Speaker 5: was on Faia as they say, you know, over the
- 50:31Speaker 5: last couple of days. And there's still that element of
- 50:34Speaker 5: people like Bill created Tom, Bill carried Tom like it's
- 50:40Speaker 5: not or Les. It's not as big as it was.
- 50:42Speaker 5: And again Fred and I will tell you we were
- 50:44Speaker 5: in that camp. Both of us were in that camp
- 50:47Speaker 5: while it was going on. But I think we've kind
- 50:50Speaker 5: of softened that stance, you know, over the last five years.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Well, I think Bill helped Tom. There's no doubt here.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Tom said.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Helping him is not carrying creating him.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Dennis and East Boston wants to talk about Bill. I
- 51:06Speaker 2: understand choices don't always work out exactly his planned as
- 51:09Speaker 2: they're done by humans and as much info as they
- 51:12Speaker 2: have at the time. If Bill knew the outcome of
- 51:14Speaker 2: fourth and two, do you think he would have had
- 51:15Speaker 2: the offense run the same play go ahead with the
- 51:17Speaker 2: snark jab Paul, it's very annoying.
- 51:21Speaker 5: If it didn't work, why would you do the same thing.
- 51:24Speaker 2: It's very annoying as a listener to sit here and
- 51:26Speaker 2: constantly here second guessing of Belichick because the team is
- 51:29Speaker 2: five hundred since Brady spoiled spoil listeners. We know Brady
- 51:34Speaker 2: is unlike any other professional athlete, and it's not even
- 51:36Speaker 2: close in my opinion. But to think Belichick doesn't know
- 51:39Speaker 2: what he's doing anymore because decisions he makes don't always
- 51:43Speaker 2: turn out the way we want, or that Paul and
- 51:45Speaker 2: Evan think they actually know a better way to draft
- 51:48Speaker 2: or play call is laughable.
- 51:50Speaker 5: I told you the second half of the show would
- 51:52Speaker 5: be back.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Get ready for Paul to say I never said I
- 51:54Speaker 2: know more than Bill, of course not, and get ready
- 51:57Speaker 2: for him after that predicted line to double con Yeah,
- 52:00Speaker 2: because I never said that Bill has so much more
- 52:03Speaker 2: information and data on every decision he makes than the
- 52:06Speaker 2: rest of us combined times a ten thousand. Just because
- 52:10Speaker 2: in hindsight decisions don't work out doesn't mean you or
- 52:13Speaker 2: I know better. Bill spends hours and hours per day
- 52:17Speaker 2: working on his team. He knows what he's going what's
- 52:20Speaker 2: going on, He knows the feel of the game. He
- 52:22Speaker 2: knows what conversations actually happened between people him and Brady.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Despite what Tom Curran and Ben Leer Vohlan report, I
- 52:30Speaker 2: didn't say, liar, he did. I love Brady and without him,
- 52:34Speaker 2: the unimaginable level of success wasn't possible. But people need
- 52:38Speaker 2: to wake up and realize how lucky they are that
- 52:41Speaker 2: Bill Belichick has been the head coach and architect of
- 52:44Speaker 2: their favorite team, and how different it would have been
- 52:47Speaker 2: to be a fan of the of anyone else since
- 52:50Speaker 2: oh one. I would be extremely disappointed as a die
- 52:54Speaker 2: hard fan. And Bill doesn't get to leave when he chooses.
- 52:57Speaker 5: I think that's the way it will end. I think
- 52:59Speaker 5: Bill will get to college shot. I agree with Fred
- 53:01Speaker 5: on that. I agree with the email what was the
- 53:02Speaker 5: email's name.
- 53:03Speaker 2: On that I missed Dennis from Boston?
- 53:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I would. I think Belichick's accomplishments are just absolutely unimaginable.
- 53:11Speaker 5: To use Dennis's word, I just I'm not a big
- 53:15Speaker 5: fan of the majority of that paragraph where it was
- 53:18Speaker 5: like how much more information? All right? So you want
- 53:23Speaker 5: us all out of jobs? I get it. No one
- 53:24Speaker 5: likes the media, I get it, But like our job
- 53:27Speaker 5: is to sort of talk about and analyze what's going on.
- 53:30Speaker 5: No one pretends to have all the information. You know,
- 53:34Speaker 5: who's a terrible NFL coach? Just give me a guy
- 53:38Speaker 5: that you think was a really bad NFL coach off
- 53:40Speaker 5: the top of your heads. Pick anybody. Okay, Do you
- 53:43Speaker 5: think Eric Mangini didn't spend hours and hours and hours
- 53:46Speaker 5: going over all these details got him?
- 53:49Speaker 4: That's the job.
- 53:49Speaker 5: Do you think he didn't have conversations where he had Yeah,
- 53:53Speaker 5: they all do. They all put in countless hours. You know,
- 53:57Speaker 5: it's a very abnormal job. It's a healthy.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Sometimes the worse they are, the more hours they put in.
- 54:03Speaker 5: Like I would never sit there and say, well, Belichick
- 54:06Speaker 5: doesn't know what he's doing because he doesn't put the
- 54:08Speaker 5: work in. No one would say that. And it's not
- 54:12Speaker 5: second guessing all the time. We're not second guessing putting
- 54:16Speaker 5: Matt Patricia as your offensive coordinator. No one's second guessed that.
- 54:20Speaker 5: People first guessed it when it happened. Everybody said what
- 54:23Speaker 5: are we doing?
- 54:24Speaker 2: Right?
- 54:24Speaker 5: Except me except for Fred? But I think you would
- 54:28Speaker 5: sort of yeah, playing the playing good cop I.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Was wrong, No, playing good cops. I actually thought I
- 54:34Speaker 2: don't want to go over it. I thought it could work.
- 54:36Speaker 5: But anyway, I mean, obviously it could work. And I
- 54:39Speaker 5: don't ever think for a second that Belichick did it
- 54:41Speaker 5: because he knew it wasn't going to work. I think
- 54:43Speaker 5: he thought about it, and he's he's a human being,
- 54:47Speaker 5: Like I don't kill him for that. I think it
- 54:50Speaker 5: was a bad choice, that's all.
- 54:53Speaker 2: If he had stuck with it, it had been even worse,
- 54:55Speaker 2: you know, which I think he may have wanted to
- 54:58Speaker 2: be from Brooklyn. He also says Bill getting too much hate.
- 55:02Speaker 2: He says, despite everyone being frustrated and upset, I'm pretty
- 55:06Speaker 2: satisfied with this offseason, especially if we land for net.
- 55:09Speaker 2: If you told me three quarters of the way through
- 55:11Speaker 2: last season that we were going to have an actual
- 55:13Speaker 2: OC and Bill O'Brien signed Juju, Gasiki and Fornette and
- 55:17Speaker 2: draft Gonzales, I'd be very happy. I mean, we're in
- 55:20Speaker 2: a run first offense that improved their pass catchers a bit,
- 55:24Speaker 2: will hopefully add another very solid veteran run back running back.
- 55:28Speaker 2: I feel like people get too attached to the big names.
- 55:32Speaker 5: I think people are putting too much into replacing guys
- 55:35Speaker 5: who left as being a massive upgrade.
- 55:38Speaker 2: I hope and I hope we're not a run first
- 55:39Speaker 2: offense because unless you've got your guy from Tennessee, it's
- 55:44Speaker 2: hard to be a run first offense in this league.
- 55:48Speaker 5: But I mean, I think the only one that I'm
- 55:50Speaker 5: convinced is a significant upgrade is Gasiki Ova Jonah Smith,
- 55:54Speaker 5: Like I think Juju can be better than Jacoby Myers,
- 55:58Speaker 5: and I think Fournette can be better than Damien Harrick.
- 56:00Speaker 4: I'm with you.
- 56:01Speaker 5: Can be can be, but they're very similar. Like if
- 56:05Speaker 5: I was more high, I don't understand why, Like I
- 56:07Speaker 5: would look and say if you had told me I
- 56:09Speaker 5: was going to add Kasiki, Juju and four net, but
- 56:14Speaker 5: did you also tell me I was going to lose
- 56:16Speaker 5: Myers and Smith and Harris, Like did you tell me
- 56:20Speaker 5: both of those things? Are just one of those things.
- 56:22Speaker 4: It's probably superficial but marginal improvement for me. With Juju,
- 56:26Speaker 4: I was, I was pretty high on him when they
- 56:28Speaker 4: signed him. But I mean, it's Jacoby Myers availability of
- 56:32Speaker 4: always being there, just the fact that he wasn't here
- 56:34Speaker 4: this spring. It's just it's kind of put a bad
- 56:36Speaker 4: initial taste in my mouth about it.
- 56:37Speaker 5: The guy tweeted me yesterday and said, Jacoby Myers will
- 56:42Speaker 5: catch the ball, either fall down or go down as
- 56:45Speaker 5: soon as he catches it, while Juju will run after
- 56:49Speaker 5: the catch. Let that marinate.
- 56:50Speaker 4: Aupit oh, I love to let that marinate.
- 56:53Speaker 5: Let that sink in. So let the fact that they
- 56:54Speaker 5: both average twelve yards to catch marinate a little bit. Yeah,
- 56:57Speaker 5: well exactly twelve yards twelve point zero yards per catch.
- 57:01Speaker 4: I don't know how it's all going to translate, but
- 57:03Speaker 4: I just, I mean, you go off of your first
- 57:04Speaker 4: impressions and we haven't even seen him yet, so I
- 57:06Speaker 4: just I hope, I know he said he's ready to go,
- 57:08Speaker 4: But I'm with you right now. It's a it's a
- 57:10Speaker 4: show me for Juju. I got to get out there
- 57:12Speaker 4: and see him thine and we'll just consistency, Like I'll.
- 57:16Speaker 5: Bring up another thing from the podcast for you, Mike'll
- 57:18Speaker 5: lecturings and things. Yeah, I'll let you. Let you weigh in,
- 57:21Speaker 5: because who do you think will be the and I'm
- 57:24Speaker 5: not talking about like maybe statistically, but who do you
- 57:27Speaker 5: think will be the quote unquote number one receiver?
- 57:29Speaker 4: He's Juju?
- 57:30Speaker 5: I do too, I do too. I like I think
- 57:33Speaker 5: it'll be Jujus misuss Andy thought it would be.
- 57:35Speaker 4: Born born and that's that's I mean, that's an interesting
- 57:38Speaker 4: picky as a kind of unexpected one. I mean, I
- 57:41Speaker 4: I think it has to be Juju. I just don't
- 57:43Speaker 4: know how it could be anyone else.
- 57:44Speaker 5: I don't think that what we've seen is that's what
- 57:46Speaker 5: Mac likes the most.
- 57:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
- 57:49Speaker 5: Like he went to Jacoby Myers more than the other guys.
- 57:51Speaker 5: It wasn't just because of Jacoby Myers. I think he's
- 57:54Speaker 5: more comfortable making those throws.
- 57:56Speaker 4: And I don't think it's Sicky get the volume, but
- 57:58Speaker 4: I think he'll be he'll be an issue for defenses
- 58:00Speaker 4: if I think Bill.
- 58:01Speaker 5: O'Brien will use him right. And as we amended it to,
- 58:04Speaker 5: like maybe a guy that ten weeks into the season,
- 58:06Speaker 5: we're saying, Wow, you know Mac and Blank really developed
- 58:10Speaker 5: a great rapport and playmaking ability that we're going to
- 58:14Speaker 5: be talking about ten weeks into the season that we're
- 58:16Speaker 5: not talking about now.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Gas.
- 58:17Speaker 5: Sicky was my pick for that, and in many way
- 58:20Speaker 5: it just has to be, you know, every difficulty better
- 58:22Speaker 5: on paper than John hu Smith. That one. I mean,
- 58:25Speaker 5: that's the one that.
- 58:27Speaker 4: On the practice field too, And that's one like you know,
- 58:29Speaker 4: in the first spring, like not the first spring when everybody,
- 58:33Speaker 4: when everybody was gaga over John H. Smith still just
- 58:35Speaker 4: always thought he looks never ever happened on the ever.
- 58:39Speaker 4: He just always looked cunky, and they would they would
- 58:40Speaker 4: feed him that little underneath crosser and he's running off
- 58:43Speaker 4: the sidelines.
- 58:43Speaker 2: And that looks in true.
- 58:44Speaker 5: Remember the preseason game when he caught the shallow cross
- 58:47Speaker 5: we got like thirty yards.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Everybody, everybody was going crazy.
- 58:51Speaker 5: It was crazy, but.
- 58:52Speaker 2: It finally got an athletic but in.
- 58:54Speaker 5: The game, but in the games it never materialized. Always
- 58:57Speaker 5: looked clunky and just right from that, what was the
- 58:59Speaker 5: same game, Like the third game of the year when
- 59:02Speaker 5: he had the ball go off his hands and picked
- 59:04Speaker 5: off the touchdown.
- 59:05Speaker 4: There were so many of those two just bad plays,
- 59:08Speaker 4: bad bad caddy ad caddy.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Yeah, let's see go back to the ace ticket utline smoking.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Sam is in Montana. What's up, Sam? Hey?
- 59:21Speaker 9: Can you hear me?
- 59:22Speaker 2: Yes, all the way from Montana, I can hear you.
- 59:26Speaker 9: I had a question. So we were talking about hanging
- 59:28Speaker 9: our head on defense maybe this year, and I heard
- 59:31Speaker 9: a lot of so much hype about Christianansalis, but I
- 59:35Speaker 9: haven't been clear on what we expect of him, so like,
- 59:39Speaker 9: in reality, he was the third cornerback taken in the
- 59:42Speaker 9: second half of the draft. Are we expecting like Sauce
- 59:46Speaker 9: Gardner from him or more of like Derek Stingely in
- 59:49Speaker 9: his first year.
- 59:51Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know about camp I mean, I
- 59:53Speaker 4: just look. My thing is, I think he's athletic enough
- 59:55Speaker 4: to play right away. I think he's still twenty one,
- 59:57Speaker 4: He's you know, he just he looks young. He seems
- 59:59Speaker 4: a little young to me. I'm prepared that he's gonna
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: have some growing pains, like it's it's I think you
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: should play a lot right out of the gate. But
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: I don't think that he's.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: You know, he's fast, He's he seems, you know, really
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: outside length.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: He's a little bit more like Tarik Wooland I think,
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: but you know, in terms of you know, the size, speed,
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: I don't know if that means he's gonna have that
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: kind of a year. Like I don't necessarily worry. Well,
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: he's the third corner in the second half of the draft.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Wooln was like a fourth round pick, so he I
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: mean a lot of people think that he was every
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: bit as good, if not better than Sauce. Yeah, but
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: I would just be happy. He doesn't need to get
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: to that level. Those Both of those guys had great
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: rookie years, but there have been a lot of good
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: rookie year like Patrick Chutan was good right away. Jac
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: Horn got hurt, then he played pretty well right away,
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: like there have been some good young corners coming into
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: the league recently, and he's here's a hot take for you.
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: I have a theory as to why what do we
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: keep saying about the wide receivers, How they're so much
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: better when they come right into the league. And it's
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: the sort of advent of those spread offenses in the
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: college game in the seven on sevenths Well, who plays
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: on the other side of the seven on seventh So.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: They're going better.
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: So they're getting better too, and maybe they're a little
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: bit more ready when they get to the league, you know.
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: And there's probably not enough of a sample size to
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: make that determination. But I think Gonzales will be starting
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: right away, and he should be competitive right away. I
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: don't need him to go out and shut everybody down.
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: That's unrealistic and that's not their defense.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I think. I think if he's going to be good,
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: like I don't say in year one, he's going to
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: reach his potential. But I think you'll see it. I'll
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: think you'll see signs of it right away, Like okay, yeah,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: you know I.
- 1:01:46Speaker 9: Would agree with that. I just there seems to be
- 1:01:49Speaker 9: so much hype that feels like people are expecting him
- 1:01:52Speaker 9: to be rookie.
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: Well he's he's gonna get I think he'll be in
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: that mix. He should play a lot.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: I mean, I think too when people talk about gonzales Is,
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: it's a lot of times true the lens of like
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: that they play man defense on every single snap, and
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: there's so much more to their defense of what they
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: mix with zone and man match and all that new
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: stuff that they do that you know, it's it's not
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: going to be him following a guy around. And I
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: just I think even just inserted into zone defenses, his
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: athleticism and his size is an asset that they need
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: and that's why I think he'll be He'll be in position,
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: but I'm kind of expecting a quiet rookiear like he's
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: out there, he's probably gonna get burned a couple of times,
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: going to make a couple of plays, Like there'll be
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: a couple that go that way and I'm sure he'll,
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: you know, with his athleticism, he'll break off and make
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: a couple of interceptions. But you know, I'm just expecting.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: Like he looks athletic, he fits a role.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Is he a shutdown court?
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: Not yet, but he's got all the tools and and
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: like I said before, they've done such a great job
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: developing you know, quarterbacks without much cornerbacks without much pedigree.
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: That now you have a cornerback with some real pedigree.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: And that's what I'm interested to see how it goes.

- 1:15:28Speaker 23: that would erradic play with Wilson, you know, Like I say,
- 1:15:31Speaker 23: he's better to Parker to me because he's younger, you know.
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: Oh, I think I think he'd be a better option
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: than Parker too. But he's had a hard time staying
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: on the field, and that's that's been the knock on him.
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: I like him, I liked I like Colton's I like
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: the Broncos receivers. And again, I'm not sure why everybody
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: thinks Sean Payton doesn't and they just want to give
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: him all the way like that. Everybody thought Judy would
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: just be given away, and now it's Sudden.
- 1:15:55Speaker 23: No, not Jews, no, suff Sudden was just mad about
- 1:15:57Speaker 23: his contract and everything else.
- 1:15:59Speaker 14: He just grunt him, just like.
- 1:16:02Speaker 23: You get ready to cut me him.
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, Mims and Sutton are not similar in any
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: way other than they both wide receivers. Like Mims never
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: did anything.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: I will say, Yo, you bring in you bring in
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: Sean Payton, So obviously you've got that honeymoon period. If
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: you do have that disgruntled guy, he'd be less apt
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: to worry about, oh, this is going to hurt my
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: team by getting him out of here on the field
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: because he's more worried about getting everything right.
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: There have been a lot of talks lately about being available.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, thanks.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: I would take him, but I mean, what are you
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: going to give up for him?
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: Well, I just think like the position weren't if I
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: was in Sean Payton's position, I wouldn't be getting rid
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: of anybody at receiver like and I have all the
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: young guys.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Unless the guy is ruining my locker room.
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: Right, But I'm a new coach.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: I can maybe sweet talk him a little bit and
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: say things are going to be different, like if I
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: have you know, I mean, Patriots fans are craving any
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: of these, you know, Broncos receivers like but if I like,
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: what I've learned from watching the Patriots, what they've gone
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: through is that if you have a young, talented wide
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: receiver who can produce in this league that like you,
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: you can't just ship them off for like a six
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: round pick because they don't they don't like their contract,
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: Like I just I think the ship has sailed for
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: giving up anything significant at this point.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: Well and then okay, so even if you if you,
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: let's say you get them. So he's disgruntled with his
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: contract in Denver, so and Denver has to get rid
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: of him because he's disgruntled. He's going to get gruntled
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: in this contract.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: He wants money if he's.
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: But but you're not going to give it to him, right,
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: if you were going to give it to him, you
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: would have just given it to the Hopkins.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, Lars is in Camp Pendleton. What's up, Lars?
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: Thank you for your service. What's going on? You wonder attack.
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: A Marine Corps phone?
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: Some one of those military phones is like a big bra.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Oh there you go. That was good.
- 1:17:55Speaker 14: Yeah, apologies to that. I just I just like stepped
- 1:17:58Speaker 14: into some wind. But anybody luxury sure. I just want
- 1:18:01Speaker 14: to say Fred, first, I was on that Christia and
- 1:18:05Speaker 14: Judge might work Islands with you, So I'll take my
- 1:18:09Speaker 14: lagellation on that as well. Yep, I thought, oh yeah,
- 1:18:12Speaker 14: you know, especially when Mayo was getting head coach. Looked
- 1:18:15Speaker 14: I said, I think you said something about like, you know,
- 1:18:19Speaker 14: a coach and the coach and adding head coaches to
- 1:18:22Speaker 14: the roster seemed like a good idea proven wrong anyway. Okay,
- 1:18:28Speaker 14: So I have scenario for you guys to contract and
- 1:18:32Speaker 14: eager to hit your opinions because I thought with Hopkins,
- 1:18:37Speaker 14: I thought maybe he would be the piece that would
- 1:18:42Speaker 14: push the offense board. If if you guys were staying
- 1:18:45Speaker 14: the other day, if Mac developed, then you know, there's
- 1:18:49Speaker 14: a kind of a ceiling on the weapons that we
- 1:18:51Speaker 14: have now. Even if Mac makes a step forward, and
- 1:18:54Speaker 14: I just felt like, you know, maybe you would be
- 1:18:56Speaker 14: the difference we makes the playoffs and not having a
- 1:18:59Speaker 14: real weapon. But then I started thinking about all of
- 1:19:03Speaker 14: the kind of guys north of thirty who had been
- 1:19:06Speaker 14: very prolific receivers and uh, you know Mary's Thomas, h
- 1:19:11Speaker 14: You've guys brought up Poachers, Sinco, and then there's like
- 1:19:13Speaker 14: a whole list of other ones that never worked and
- 1:19:15Speaker 14: get out Campion, Reggie, Wayne's, Tory Holt and Paras Thomas. Anyway,
- 1:19:18Speaker 14: so I'm just thinking like what is more likely? Uh
- 1:19:22Speaker 14: would Bill Hopkins have a couple more really productive seasons?
- 1:19:24Speaker 14: So could he flame out?
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:19:27Speaker 14: You know, not being able to U you need to
- 1:19:29Speaker 14: see it towards the thirties, and uh do you think
- 1:19:31Speaker 14: that's that's built mentality's rather tick up one of those guys.
- 1:19:33Speaker 14: It's like no risk bargain bin and that's reflected in
- 1:19:37Speaker 14: the potential like incentive late contact up. So I guess
- 1:19:40Speaker 14: it's much more likely, Uh do we not get in
- 1:19:43Speaker 14: the playoffs because you know, Max develops and we don't
- 1:19:45Speaker 14: have a piece to push us over the top for
- 1:19:48Speaker 14: Seahawks playman.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Thank you all right? Thanks what was the second one?
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Do hop flaming out? I think the hop is going
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: to have a couple of good years.
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I did too, And I think there was no
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: risk to that either. I don't think that was a
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: risky signing.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: No, it really wasn't.
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: Like they didn't give him like fifty million guaranteed, where
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: if he flames out in year one, you're stuck with
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: this contract like it's like thirteen million for one year basically,
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: and if he doesn't work out and you cut him, I.
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: Just wonder what does it look like that that they're
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: good on offense, but they're they were one piece away, Like.
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: I don't know how to identify.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: I don't know what that looks like exactly. Because I
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: think if mac Is is as good as he needs
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: to be, that that they could probably get to where
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: they would have been with Hopkins if that they didn't
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: have him. I just I just don't know if it's
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: going to be good enough overall and that that you know,
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: even even if you if you had him, that maybe
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: you could talk yourself into having enough. But right now,
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: I just I don't think they have enough. And it's
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: hard to say.
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: It's it's real, it's a great question by Lars, but
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: it's it's really hard to answer because of that, Like, well,
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: my instinct would be what you're just saying, if they're close,
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: then Max should have enough yeah to do it. Yeah right,
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: but then maybe Ma's not good enough and it wouldn't
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: matter if it was hard.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: I don't know that was going to be my question
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: to do. It's like, with what they have right now,
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: how good does Mac need to be to get them
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: into the playoffs and win a playoff game?
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: I mean really good, really good? You know, a top
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: ten quarterback in the league.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: I was really that good.
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know I would tend to agree with that.
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: I think that they need the offense to lift to
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: another level, and I don't think they have exceptional talent
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: on offense, So the quarterback is going to need to
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: really rise.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: I think he needs to be you know, mistake free
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: mostly and when the game's on the line, he's locked
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: in and.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: Like productive, you know, he needs to be productive. Like
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: the red zone. Thinking of the red zone. Last year,
- 1:21:47Speaker 5: they didn't have a ton of red zone turnovers, but
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: they couldn't score in the red zone, you know what
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: I mean.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, let's go to Aaron in Atlanta. What's up, Aaron?
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: Aaron?
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Aaron in Atlanta?
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: Is upstairs? Is upstairs?
- 1:22:04Speaker 25: Guys going? Oh there are what happened listening the first time?
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: Call her?
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Are you in the underground?
- 1:22:11Speaker 8: No, I'm not.
- 1:22:12Speaker 25: I'll show it you on speaker.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: Is that still a thing in Atlanta? Do they still
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: have the underground?
- 1:22:16Speaker 23: Yeah?
- 1:22:16Speaker 7: They do.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: Yeah. I once said I went to a restaurant in
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: the underground. It was a fondue restaurant.
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: What is the underground?
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: What does that mean?
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: It's like a whole wall under the ground.
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I didn't go to that when I went there.
- 1:22:32Speaker 25: Sorry, Aaron, that's okay. So I have two things, Mike.
- 1:22:36Speaker 25: I love your signce held references. I get a big
- 1:22:41Speaker 25: crack out of them every time.
- 1:22:43Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: And then two sorry, go ahead, no it is yours.
- 1:22:50Speaker 25: Okay, Sorry, I have a quick thought. I'll like to
- 1:22:52Speaker 25: hear your opinions on Okay. So the other day I
- 1:22:55Speaker 25: was listening to Catch twenty two and they brought up
- 1:22:57Speaker 25: something that I feel like doesn't get talked about it
- 1:23:00Speaker 25: enough in conversations. I've heard people often comment about how
- 1:23:03Speaker 25: our defense falls off or it can't finish games. Last season,
- 1:23:08Speaker 25: especially but they don't mention that the defense is on
- 1:23:11Speaker 25: the field a lot more than the opposing defenses. I
- 1:23:14Speaker 25: just feel like if the offense was even middle of
- 1:23:16Speaker 25: the road, which I feel like it is a consensus
- 1:23:19Speaker 25: where we're going to be, like, can strength some drives together,
- 1:23:23Speaker 25: it'll help the defense out tremendously.
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: Yeah, offense definitely helps defense, no question, Mike. Do you
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: have numbers on that.
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: I have some numbers out that we're interesting. Just you know,
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: take what you will. But offense was was twenty eighth
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: in the league, and time for drive not time for possession,
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: but average drive time was twenty eight The defense was sixteenth,
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: so it wasn't you know they I mean, I guess
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: that's not really answering what we want, though we really
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: want time on is.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: Did the defense spend too much time on the field
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: because the offense.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: Couldn't put put together drive?
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: Do you have an answer to that?
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: Not really not, not not in front of.
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: Me, because I kind of think they were middle of
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: the pack in that defensive wise, like time of possession.
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: I think they had some games that it was really bad,
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: but I think they had others that it wasn't. I
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: think the defense had problems. It was weird because I
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: thought the defense played really well at times. Obviously they
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: scored a ton of touchdowns. They they caused some turnovers
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: and had a lot of sacks. But I think they
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: really struggled in on third down, you know, for large
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: stretches of the year, certainly against the better teams, and
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: then in the red zone at times. So it was
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: kind of uneven defensively. And you know, you can go
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: to like the age old thing, the cliche about the
- 1:24:38Speaker 5: quarterbacks when they played the better teams, the numbers were
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: probably skewed a little bit bad.
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: Yeah, the numbers back the I mean twenty first on
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: third down and twenty second in red zone. I mean,
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: just you know those are the.
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: See Fred you just watch just why don't need stets.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Let's go to Eddie in California. What's up Eddie?
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: So guys, I hope you guys are doing good.
- 1:25:03Speaker 26: I kind of want to touch on what you guys
- 1:25:04Speaker 26: mentioned earlier about how if Mac Jones can be the
- 1:25:07Speaker 26: guy for us, how everything could be better. And I
- 1:25:11Speaker 26: kind of want to say that if Bill O'Brien can
- 1:25:15Speaker 26: be the elite offensive coordinator that we need and Mac
- 1:25:18Speaker 26: Jones can be that guy, even if it's just like
- 1:25:21Speaker 26: Kirk Cousins, serviceable and not not like something elite. I
- 1:25:25Speaker 26: think what we have now can get it done. Like
- 1:25:28Speaker 26: I kind of want to compare it to the Giants
- 1:25:30Speaker 26: last year. I mean, like they had no elite receivers.
- 1:25:34Speaker 26: Daniel Jones is like not the best passing. I know
- 1:25:37Speaker 26: he has that running factor, and I know they have Saquon,
- 1:25:42Speaker 26: but I just I don't think they had anything elite
- 1:25:44Speaker 26: in receiving. And I agree Andre Stevenson can kind of
- 1:25:50Speaker 26: lead like Saquon, but I do think we need another
- 1:25:53Speaker 26: running back, hopefully one that has more of a receiving upside.
- 1:25:58Speaker 26: And I just wish they would call of Kurring just
- 1:26:01Speaker 26: because of his receiving upside is so good. But I
- 1:26:04Speaker 26: just wanted to know what you guys think about that.
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I listen, I have hope, I have hope.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: I said I'm entering this season with hope, not expectation, hope.
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: I mean I tie it to what I just said.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: And you know, I think the Kirk Cousins comp is
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: one that gets put out there a lot. But I
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: mean he has Justin Jefferson and he you know, had
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: Adam feeling. So it's it's it's translating that to Mac.
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: If Mac had those guys, could a performance as good
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: as Kirk Cousins be enough? Like maybe that's why I
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: think Mac needs to be better than that, because he
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: doesn't have, you know, a Justin Jefferson on the field
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: for him. So I mean, I I really still believe
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: that if Mac takes a big leap forward, the offense
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: is all clicking, that that they have enough to be
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: competitive with every team they play. I just I I
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: haven't really seen it in a while from Max, so
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: I'm a little bit skeptical that he's going to be
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: able to play to a level to raise that whole shit.
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: And I also think like people have thrown that, you know,
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: the Cousins won around a lot, and this one is
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: now starting to get more traction with the Daniel Jones,
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: and I would argue, I don't think you want Daniel Jones.
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: Like everybody that talks about it completely glosses over the
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: running first of all, like that's like that's not a
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: part of it. Huge, Like the whole Giants offense with
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones running, like that's why they
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: he's right, It's absolutely right. They don't have great receivers,
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: they didn't have a high powered offense. They did just
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: enough offensively, just enough defensively. They want a lot of
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: close games. They were competitive, they played hard, and they
- 1:27:34Speaker 5: were kind of, you know, an average team when the
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: day was all over. I mean, they were competitive. But
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: I don't think you want Daniel Jones. I don't think
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: that's what you want Mac Jones to be. No, and
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: I don't think he's as good as Daniel Jones right
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: now because of the running, Like I think people just
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: forget that part, like he can be Jalen Hurts like
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: you just got to get him AJ brutt like, well,
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: Jalen Hurts is Jalen Hurts because he does two things,
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: not just one.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: Jjn LA. About uniforms, I'm team nineties. That's the era
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: I became a Patriots fan. It's an option to use
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: in Madden and they look amazing as well as all
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: silver uniforms with red shoes. I hope to see.
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: Them in their future silver also it's like the tin Man. Yeah,
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: the uniform. I'm not surprised.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: Fred Gerald and Grimsby going to have to disagree with
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Fred growing up in Montreal in the seventies and eighties,
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: where the AFC broadcasts were the Patriots and the NFC
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: was the Giants. I chose the team with the cooler
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: logo and became a Patriots fan, Love Grogan to Morgan, Moses, Mooses, Claiborne,
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: La pet and Tip Tippett and on and on. I
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: remember buying my first football magazine and the only logo
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: I like better than the Patriots was the Broncos pat
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: Patriot was by far and is the best Patriot logo
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: to me. Well, you don't know from logos.
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: What other magazines did you buy? So that's funny. He
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: mentioned the Broncos logo and we were talking earlier.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: By the way, I was a Broncos fan. That wasn't
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: a good logo.
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: Okay, I wasn't necessarily talking better, you know, logos compared
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: to the other ones. But I'd take if I were
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: a Denver fan, I'd take those uniforms over the ones
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: that they changed to every day of the week. Yeah yeah,
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: they were much better. Yeah yeah, but the but the
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: blue sleeves on the the blue stripes on the sleeve.
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: You know, you see the new Cleveland ones too. They
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: went to like a white helmet I think was an
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: alter alternate.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that. I think the Patriots.
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: I saw the Colts are wearing a black alternate helmet,
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: which I hadn't seen before. That looked all right.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: The Patriots, when they wear their red jerseys, should have well,
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: they have the white helmet for the throwback, but they
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: their alternate jersey should be red with the new logo
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: and a white helmet with the new logo. Get rid
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: of silver. You know we don't like the from silver.
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: You don't know from silver.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: No, it's red, white, and blue where patriots.
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: You're right, you know we are all Patriots after all.
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: Rick and Louisville. I'm completely with you Fred on grown
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: adult fascination with uniforms, But I do have one major
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: pet peeve, and it happens more in college teams need
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: to wear their colors. When I turn on a game
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: and Oregon is in pink or Oklahoma's weren't gray, come on,
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: if I can't recognize you and I can't be alone
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: in this, there's a problem.
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: I'm with Rick. I mean, it's hard to figure out
- 1:30:30Speaker 5: when you put a college game on, who's playing.
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: I mean shouldn't Oregon wear yellow, green and white instead
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: of pink, black and whatever.
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: Well, the only thing about pink is sometimes that's for
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: a cause. Yeah, So I'm gonna rest. Can want to
- 1:30:42Speaker 5: push back, but yeah, I mean it might be in
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: the middle of October.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: Could wy Oklahoma where orange and black? Miami where aqua
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: and orange. It's stupid and it drives me nuts.
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: Okay, Oklahoma state orange and black.
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: Jack about the logo absence makes the Heart grow fonder.
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true. Is some truth to that apparently. So
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: because I'm with Fred, I went through the nineties that
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: was I was a season ticket holder from ninety three
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: to when Fred hired me in ninety nine, and I
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: don't remember the people say the best, and I don't
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: remember a lot of praise for the uniform.
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: And they don't spark anything in you that was like
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: the highlight of when you were, you know, having fun.
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: No, But I'm more on the Fred's side, like there's
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: really nothing they were gonna wear that's gonna spark it. Now.
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: I liked the seventies, the late seventies.
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: Look.
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: I liked the white shirts with the red pants that
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: they went to in like seventy nine ish, But like,
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: do I have to have that? No, it's not really.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: I think this. I think Sutton is way more of
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: a Patriots player than Hopkins. He's everything they look for,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: cheap and often injured.
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: Oh you know, you know it's when where I did.
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: I did want to because I looked up his stats
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: after Eldred called in. Eldred's right, like he only he
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: missed basically a whole year, but otherwise he's played in
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: most of the games. I think he missed two games
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: one year, one game another year, and then there was
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: the one year I think he tore his a cl
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: and missed virtually the entire year. You had three catches
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: all year. I like Courtland Sutton. I always have liked
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: Courtland Sutton, but I just don't think he's the answer.
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: I wouldn't kick any receiver off the team right now.
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: I told you I would have taken Denzel.
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: Mims, taking pretty much anybody at this.
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: Like as a guy who was a second round pick,
- 1:32:30Speaker 5: hasn't you know is busted out. That's that's right in
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: Bill's weelhouse.
- 1:32:33Speaker 4: He's caught an NFL pass. Sure to sign him up.
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: I just don't want to give up, like you know,
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: a day, And I don't think it would cost you
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: a lot to get Sutton. I don't think it would
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: cost you like a first, third or fourth. Yeah, maybe
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: not even that much.
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: Robin san Diego via Connecticut. I've had this opinion for
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: some time and wanted to see what you thought. Bill
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: runs things a certain way, and I don't think it's
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: changed much. When Brady was here, it worked perfectly because
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: the goat elevated all around him. Bill kept the window
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: Petroley opened by not going all in on many players,
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: managing spending and the locker room. You can spend and win,
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: but it doesn't last. I think Brady would have been
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: great without Bill, and Belichick would have been recognized as
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: a good coach in the league without Brady. However, Bill's
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: team building inconsistency, elevated by Brady is what made a
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: twenty something year long dynasty. I don't think Bill's approach
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: the team building works as well without Brady. I don't
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: think Brady is the goat without Bill's style of team
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: building and management that allowed for twenty years of excellence.
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: Yes, I don't know that's right.
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: Sure, what do you think the result would have been
- 1:33:39Speaker 5: if he went all in every year with Brady.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, you don't know if like
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: you know when when you start, you know the entitlement,
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: like guys bitching.
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: My point is, whatever your style was was gonna work
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: as long as Brady was part of it. Like I mean,
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: I think I think.
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: Time is but I think his point for twenty years, yeah,
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: and I think worked for twenty Obviously you can't go
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: all in every year for twenty years.
- 1:34:10Speaker 5: But they could have gone all in. And we've talked
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: about the different times. Oh six, you know, spend a
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: couple of million more and keep Dion Branch and you
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: win another Super Bowl? Yeah, right, like you could have
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: got Like, don't please please tell me that that time
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: hasn't at least caused you to think maybe it wasn't that,
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: maybe it wasn't team building that won all those titles,
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: Like at least have you at least thought about the
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: fact that maybe it wasn't. I'm not I'm not even
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: gonna tease you with my normal remark about you don't
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: still believe in Santa Claus? Do you do?
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: But I but I mean I'll bring up a point Paul,
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: like but like, how did Brady get six? Like I mean,
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: and like I don't think that he was that much six.
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: Because they decided to be mediocre talent wise the whole time.
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: But no, that is Peyton Manning.
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: Like I think that they're probably close talent wise, Like
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: what's the disconnect between six and two?
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: Like that, So you think Brady was three times the
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: quarter Like I just don't think Brady was three times
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: the quarterback. Peyton Manning was.
- 1:35:10Speaker 5: I think he's it was. I think it was razor
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: thin and he was just a little bit better when
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: it counted. And that's why they got to.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: Host defense was better than the cults.
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: I think, unquestionably. But that's that's where you actually went
- 1:35:23Speaker 5: in like first round picks up front, like you did
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: invest in that that was going all in true?
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: No they yeah, David writes in uh, I recently thought
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: about this as it's happened a few times. When was
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: the last time a sports game or moment made you cry,
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: either tears of joy or sadness? And what was it?
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: If it counts? I cried like a baby after watching
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: Brady's fake retirement video by the Patriots a couple of
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: years ago. I don't think I've ever cried.
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: And I'd admit it too, but like not only my
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: own sporting events. I losing off games in high school,
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: you know, tears, but really, I don't think a sport
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: team like a professional.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: I cried after looking at a third strike in an
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: All Star Babe Ruth game.
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: That's a good one.
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: How old were you I was, I don't know, I
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: was twelve or whatever. We're coming back. We were playing Cooperstown,
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: New York, and runners on second and third. I think
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: we were behind by three, two outs in the last inning,
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: and I looked at a third strike watched.
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: It get the bat shoulder Fred.
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: I don't think I've ever cried, certainly not as a fan.
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: I know I never cried over a game.
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: I've bitched and moaned about plenty. I don't know. I
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: don't really remember. I do remember misplaying a fly ball
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: in the last inning of a game and senior Babe Ruth,
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: I was like sixteen, sixteen or sad I was I
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: was old. I was like sixteen or seventeen and being
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: completely distraught. I don't remember crying about it, but I
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: cost our team the game. Routine flyball I looked like
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: it was coming right to me, was over my head.
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: I cry.
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: I think I told the story about Babson junior year
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: when I like missed the puck and my stick broke
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: and the stick half the stick one up in the
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: air and hit my dift this in the middle of
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: the game defensive partner in the head, and I kind
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: of laughed and like got off the field and they
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: went down and scored, and I'd like gotten benched, and
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: like it was one of those things like that the team,
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: the team won, but I felt like I was just
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: extracted from the team and I that was that was
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: one of the most miserable experiences of like my sporting
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: just And it's weird that it was like sparked by
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: like this random play where my stick broke and hit
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: somebody in the head and I kind of laughed and
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: was out of the game for a second.
- 1:37:31Speaker 5: But that's when I was a good one. I mean,
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: those are the most disappointed.
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: I've worked for me, Like why won't this work? Why
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: can't I get it right right now, like and be
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: a part of the team, And yeah, that's similar.
- 1:37:42Speaker 5: Things like that are the most disappointed I've ever been
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: in sports. Is when things aren't going well for me,
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden the team does well
- 1:37:53Speaker 5: and you have that conflicted feeling.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's why I did individual sports. Eventually, I
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: just wanted to play. I don't care I'm not a
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: good team player. I don't want to watch. I want
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: to play every minute, and that you could do that
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: in individual sports, you know, it was all you.
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: Well, that was the hardest was my junior year when
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: I had Mono, which Paul pointed out after my first bars.
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: On the show.
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: You know, you sit up in the stands and your
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: job was to chart how the defensemen were doing, like
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: how many giveaways they had and stuff. So you're in
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: kind of a weird position where you know, at that point,
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: I'm like, you know, I'm trying to hope that the
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: fifth or sixth defenseman has brutal turnovers or you know
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: that has terrible plays, and so you know, you're a
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: little bit motivated to be like, you know, checking out
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: the turnovers and a hard place to be. I'll say too,
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: I have such respect for and I'll always say this
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: guy Brian Occasion, who was at the time a sophomore
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: on our team, and we made it all the way
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: to the MAC Finals, my last game senior year championship game,
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: and one of our other seniors who had missed a
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: bunch of time with knee injuries, one of our beloved
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: guys was like, I think I can go tonight. And
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: the sophomore, Brian Occasion, was the guy who was out
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: for the championship game to let our senior play. And
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: I just always thought so much of that move to
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: like kind of sacrifice yourself to a kid who you
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: know really probably was only on one leg at the time,
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: could play like in his last game. It was just
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: like something that the other side of it never forgot
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: that kid stepping up being a team player.
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: You know, yeah, Fred wouldn't have done that. I remember,
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: so I got a tennis match.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Freshman basketball were at practice and half of us were
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: hung over, the other half were sick, and Brad Kimball
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: took a tip off and started dribbling the wrong way
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: down the court and I started cracking up, and the
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: coach kicked me out of practice. He's the one going
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: the wrong way. To coach, I got laughing at him,
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: and then I turn around and then the whole team's
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: behind me. Then he just everybody out, just take the showers.
- 1:39:45Speaker 5: It's crazy.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: It was awful. We were just like out of it.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: It's the best.
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: I mean, all this stuff is. I mean, it's it's
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: so much about like when you play sports growing up,
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: like did you win or lose?
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: It's like it's not really ever about that.
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: It's all about these experiences with like you know, learning
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: to other teammates and that comes.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: Yeah, like we like we probably made the States once
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: or twice in different sports, but like that's not what
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: I remember, you know, practice. Yeah, I remember kicking one
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: of our soccer coaches in the cap and the shin
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: as he went by, and you know, sent him flying,
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: and he's.
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: Like, who did that?
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: Who did that? Was you? He's pointing at me. I
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: saw red because I was wearing a red shirt?
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: Was that you?
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: And you know, oh I sent them? But like things
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: like that you remember.
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: Uh, all right, good good, good stuff. Let's go back
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: to the phones. Dan's in Virginia and Michigan. What's up, Dan?
- 1:40:36Speaker 24: Hey Ford? First off, thank you for the clarification on
- 1:40:39Speaker 24: the whole gentlemine.
- 1:40:40Speaker 12: Uh.
- 1:40:42Speaker 24: Conversation.
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: You're welcome, welcome.
- 1:40:44Speaker 24: I apologize if I miss misrepresented anybody's position, although it
- 1:40:48Speaker 24: doesn't have to me wondering what exactly it was you
- 1:40:51Speaker 24: arguing about.
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: Absolutely, as was always the case, dan Fred has moved
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: the one.
- 1:41:00Speaker 24: But the question of today is in terms of expectations
- 1:41:03Speaker 24: for the coming season.
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:41:05Speaker 24: It's easy for us as fans to remember, you know,
- 1:41:09Speaker 24: when our team made the shift back into contender status
- 1:41:12Speaker 24: by you know, signing a top flight QB or changing
- 1:41:17Speaker 24: their head coach who you know, changed the approach and
- 1:41:19Speaker 24: the team went from bottom of the bottom to the top.
- 1:41:23Speaker 24: But how often does it happen that a team kind
- 1:41:26Speaker 24: of incrementally makes its way back to contender status. You know,
- 1:41:31Speaker 24: they're they're not able to add a superstar, they're not
- 1:41:33Speaker 24: going to they're not changing their head coach. But they
- 1:41:35Speaker 24: had just those pieces here and there to become a contender,
- 1:41:39Speaker 24: you know, kind of I guess, I guess to put
- 1:41:41Speaker 24: it in a simple way, does it happen quickly or
- 1:41:44Speaker 24: does it not happen at all?
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: It's a good question.
- 1:41:46Speaker 23: How often does it to a contender?
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: How often does that rebuild work with the same coach? Yeah,
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: see that's to me, that's the ex coach. Not very
- 1:41:54Speaker 5: many guys, I would say Baltimore is worked.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: Right, because owners don't have the patience for one.
- 1:41:58Speaker 5: Thing, right, most most teams don't don't do it that way.
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: How how long when Carol went to the Seahawks, how
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: quickly did they win?
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: They got good as soon as Russell Wilson was then
- 1:42:08Speaker 5: okay twelve.
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: But I mean, I think you just have to catch lightning.
- 1:42:12Speaker 5: But that's not what you're talking about. He's talking about
- 1:42:14Speaker 5: a team that was good and then they go through
- 1:42:16Speaker 5: a lull. They keep the same coach, so it's not
- 1:42:20Speaker 5: like this dramatic change like Denver with John Fox got
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: Peyton Manning, Like, that's not what we're talking about. I
- 1:42:27Speaker 5: assume Dan, right, So I don't think there's a lot
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: of I think Baltimore might be an example.
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: But but again, like got Lamar, and you know, like.
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: They've sort of gone through like some peaks and valleys.
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: They've been better. Even with Flaco, they had some down
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: years then they went back up, and even Pittsburgh, but
- 1:42:44Speaker 5: Pittsburgh's never gone down well and relatively he's never had
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: a losing season.
- 1:42:50Speaker 24: Yeah, you agree with Baltimore, even though it's like, you know,
- 1:42:56Speaker 24: they dropped Lamar and that's.
- 1:42:57Speaker 7: Yeah, that's what Mike said. It's it's it's hard to
- 1:43:01Speaker 7: really come up with them because nobody once you stop
- 1:43:05Speaker 7: having success, the coach generally goes right right now, you
- 1:43:08Speaker 7: bring in someone else, I mean, bring.
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: Up you know, Andy Reid with you know, Alex Smith
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: and his competitive and then all of a sudden you
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: get Patrick Mahomes and.
- 1:43:15Speaker 5: Now it's like, oh my god.
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: Now, but they also right, I just I tied to
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: the quarterback. I think it's mostly you know, Montana to
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: to young Far to Rogers. I mean, the times it's
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: been able to happen, it's because you've lucked into or
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: you've randomly hit on that next quarterback. And you know,
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: that's what I think the Patriots were hoping. Mac Jones
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: was is you know, especially a fifteenth overall that.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an impatient league. So you know, if there
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: are any examples of the what you're exactly talking about,
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: it's rare.
- 1:43:45Speaker 24: You know, I can't Gibbs Washington.
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: But which which time, like would they media like, I
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: don't know enough between I felt like they were always good. Okay,
- 1:43:59Speaker 5: you can correct.
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I don't know, but.
- 1:44:07Speaker 5: We look up.
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but thanks Dan, thanks for the call. Uh Danny's
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: in Florida. What's up, Danny?
- 1:44:16Speaker 27: Hey, guys, how you guys do it?
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:44:19Speaker 28: Hey, so I've been called it the other day. I've
- 1:44:23Speaker 28: been wanting to say this all off season.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Uh the topic.
- 1:44:27Speaker 27: Online, but uh, I feel like too many, like as
- 1:44:30Speaker 27: the fans and uh as the beat writers, you know,
- 1:44:34Speaker 27: you got your guys.
- 1:44:35Speaker 28: You guys, yourself, and uh all the guys out there,
- 1:44:38Speaker 28: I feel like.
- 1:44:38Speaker 27: Too many people are focusing on the offense, and too
- 1:44:41Speaker 27: many people are focusing on the defense.
- 1:44:44Speaker 28: Like I feel like we're all failing to uh forget
- 1:44:47Speaker 28: the whole aspect of the three phases that Bill has
- 1:44:50Speaker 28: always talked about. The Patriots have failed together as playing
- 1:44:56Speaker 28: complimentary football, like in the kicking game. I guess you
- 1:44:59Speaker 28: saw last year. Kicking game was a disaster. They lost
- 1:45:02Speaker 28: a lot of games in the kicking game. And people
- 1:45:03Speaker 28: don't are honing in too much offense.
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: Listen, Danny, you you you're absolutely right. I mean, we
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: talked about the beginning of the show. One of the
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: one of them. One of the bullet points of this
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: decline has been the undisciplined play on all sides of
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: the ball, especially special teams.
- 1:45:21Speaker 23: You know, yeah.
- 1:45:22Speaker 27: Yeah, So I'm curious to see what Joe Judge does.
- 1:45:26Speaker 27: I think a lot of people, you know, shamed him,
- 1:45:29Speaker 27: and I mean he did deserve the shame of Bill
- 1:45:31Speaker 27: put him in a bad spot being the quarterbacks go.
- 1:45:34Speaker 27: So I want to see what Joe Judge does, uh,
- 1:45:37Speaker 27: you know, kind of overseeing the special teams because I'm
- 1:45:39Speaker 27: actually very curious to see how the kicker they drafted
- 1:45:42Speaker 27: the partner.
- 1:45:43Speaker 28: I care about that phase of the game too, And.
- 1:45:46Speaker 27: I'm kind of curious to see, you know, the team
- 1:45:50Speaker 27: collectively because as you see all the great teams in
- 1:45:53Speaker 27: the NFL, they play good in all three phases.
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: Kansas City and Philadelphia don't. Yeah, they have the two
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: worst special teams units in football, according to Rick Goslin,
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: who charged that.
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and you gotta admit Danny it right now. It's
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: all it's offense.
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: I hope to never see either one of those rookie
- 1:46:09Speaker 5: kickers as that. But I hope they have an offense
- 1:46:12Speaker 5: that never punts, and I hope they have a red
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: zone offense that always scores touchdowns. But the only time
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: we see Ryland is our extra points.
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: But you need to you need to be balanced, and
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: you need you need all phases of the team to
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: be smart.
- 1:46:24Speaker 5: Yeah, except for they're not all equal. Yeah no, just
- 1:46:29Speaker 5: real quick, I looked up the Redskins in eighty two
- 1:46:32Speaker 5: is when they won the first one. They were eight
- 1:46:34Speaker 5: and one. It was a strike year, fourteen and two,
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: eleven and five, ten and six, twelve and four, eleven
- 1:46:38Speaker 5: and four, seven and nine and eighty eight, ten and six,
- 1:46:41Speaker 5: ten and six, fourteen and two, nine and seven, and
- 1:46:45Speaker 5: then they finally fell off.
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: That's pretty good. That's a good stretch.
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: So in that span they won three titles, but they
- 1:46:53Speaker 5: never really dipped.
- 1:46:54Speaker 4: They won one one down season. That's impressive.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: Let's go to Enrique in New Mexico. What's up Enrique?
- 1:47:04Speaker 8: Hey guys all you continue right? Yep, okay, this first
- 1:47:09Speaker 8: on Color here.
- 1:47:10Speaker 14: I'm the guy that you sang you trigger for since
- 1:47:13Speaker 14: trivia questions.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: Oh you do the super Bowl trivia questions? Yeah, those
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: are good.
- 1:47:18Speaker 8: I hope you have a super Bowl and regularly absolutely No.
- 1:47:22Speaker 8: I just want to cult today, so I have a
- 1:47:24Speaker 8: question for you. I'm a fast fans in thirty six
- 1:47:29Speaker 8: that's seen the lowest of below and high, so we
- 1:47:33Speaker 8: can all agree that you, I mean, really the deal
- 1:47:37Speaker 8: process is not working, you know. Next well, so, but
- 1:47:42Speaker 8: I'm also listening to Michael Lombardi, I like sometimes to
- 1:47:46Speaker 8: my merchs a little bit. Well, I like, so my
- 1:47:49Speaker 8: question how much in relationships with you guys? With Michael when.
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: He was by, Uh, I didn't really know him at all,
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: to be honest with you, I might have said hello
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: to him once or twice. Who Mike Mike Lombardi.
- 1:48:02Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, I talked to him. I pretend that I
- 1:48:05Speaker 5: know him.
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Enrique and to everyone else, there's a
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: separation of church and state here. This is not like
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: the ESPN commercial cafeteria com Yeah. I mean we see
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: them on the road mostly, you know, like I sit
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: next to matc grow and Elliott Wolf on the road
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: and you know, talk to him a little bit mostly listen. Yeah,
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: but like we're not encouraged to be friends with anyone.
- 1:48:29Speaker 5: Who was the guy that you didn't realize? What was it?
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: John Robinson? Yeah, but you didn't realize.
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: It was Yeah, I asked him, do you have a
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: credential to be sitting here?
- 1:48:40Speaker 5: I was going to leave that part out.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: Well, I had never seen him up in the press
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: box before, and I never actually saw him in person
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: before you know, so I get into the press box,
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: you know, you have your routine and you get there
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: Sunday morning, you start unloading and this this guy sitting
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: there and I'm like, hey, you're supposed to be here,
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: so yeah, ahead of pro personnel scouting or whatever.
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: I wish you kept it going because he was here
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: with a couple of years ago for the for the
- 1:49:04Speaker 4: playoff game. When he was sitting there like that would
- 1:49:06Speaker 4: have been like, you know, hey, you got a credential,
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: you you could give him a little ribbon.
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Now what's he doing? Did he ever get a
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: job after Tennessee?
- 1:49:17Speaker 5: I don't think so. I've heard I don't think so.
- 1:49:21Speaker 12: Uh.
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: One more call Todd's in North Carolina. Hey Todd, Hey, guys.
- 1:49:25Speaker 29: When you're talking about coaches and teams that go through
- 1:49:27Speaker 29: lulls and then nowag to come back, I think Pete
- 1:49:30Speaker 29: Carroll's kind of doing that right now with the Sea.
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: I think that's a good That's about as close as
- 1:49:35Speaker 5: I could think of. That's a good one, Todd. Yeah,
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: so what Dan is talking about, they were really good.
- 1:49:41Speaker 5: A couple of trips to the Super Bowl one one
- 1:49:44Speaker 5: kind of fell off and now they look like they're
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: back on the rise, although I don't think they're all
- 1:49:48Speaker 5: that good.
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: Would you invest in Gino Smith?
- 1:49:50Speaker 5: Like that's the question, right, That's what they did.
- 1:49:52Speaker 29: Yeah, this is where I want to go. What does
- 1:49:56Speaker 29: it take to get do we have?
- 1:49:59Speaker 17: Have we had?
- 1:50:00Speaker 29: What it takes to really get those quarterbacks going? Because look,
- 1:50:03Speaker 29: Gino Smith was somewhere else and god, the poor bugger
- 1:50:05Speaker 29: was in the Jets and he just like died because
- 1:50:09Speaker 29: he was in this this division. Like what does it
- 1:50:12Speaker 29: take to get a quarterback like that over the hump?
- 1:50:14Speaker 29: Because suddenly he goes and everybody I'd written him off.
- 1:50:16Speaker 29: I never thought that I think he was going to
- 1:50:18Speaker 29: be anything, But he's actually I think personally, maybe I'm wrong,
- 1:50:22Speaker 29: Maybe you guys have a better eyesight on this. I
- 1:50:24Speaker 29: think he's performing at a much much higher level than
- 1:50:27Speaker 29: he ever did at the Jet What do you think
- 1:50:29Speaker 29: is absolutely.
- 1:50:30Speaker 4: I agree with you, But I think he's a unicorn.
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: I just don't think he was ever.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: I think he's perfectly adequate. I don't think he was
- 1:50:36Speaker 5: anything special last year. You guys think much more of
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: him than I do. I don't think I think he
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: had a couple of good games early in the year,
- 1:50:42Speaker 5: and because he hadn't played in so long, it was
- 1:50:44Speaker 5: a huge thing. I think that Kirk Cousins like thoroughly
- 1:50:49Speaker 5: mediocre kind of guy. I think that's Gino Smith. I
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: don't think he's.
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: Well, I can still think he's thoroughly mediocre and think
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: he was better.
- 1:50:55Speaker 5: Than I saw him play like that, but the Jets here,
- 1:51:00Speaker 5: I never saw him throw deep balls like you through
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: last year. And you know, but I just think.
- 1:51:05Speaker 4: It's a it's a total unique situation.
- 1:51:08Speaker 5: And Tatara guy plays to that level. And to Todd's point,
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: he's right like he was in this division playing against Belichick.
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: You know, well that's the more different.
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: Right, Well, that's like the Mac thing. I mean, Max got,
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: you know, a tough, tough schedule to go against. You know,
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: could Mac go somewhere else and but but still Stanta
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: Cy West, that's you know.
- 1:51:25Speaker 5: I mean, I'd be I'm going to be very curious.
- 1:51:27Speaker 5: I might be dead wrong. I could be dead wrong
- 1:51:29Speaker 5: on this one. If he comes out Gino and has
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: another like really good year. Like I don't think he
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: was that great last year. I think he had a
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: couple of really good games early and became like the
- 1:51:38Speaker 5: darling of a comebacks A great story. You know, it
- 1:51:42Speaker 5: was a great it was a great story. Absolutely, maybe
- 1:51:45Speaker 5: he was better than I'm giving him credit for. We'll see.
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: Maybe you guys are right.
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: Joe and Michigan. If the season is a disaster, I
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: would say owners have to make a change. If a success,
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: if it's if it's if it's a success, then onward
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: and up its success meeting playoffs. Also, I think Malik
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: Cunningham is going to be a big surprise for us.
- 1:52:06Speaker 4: I hope one of those guys is a surprise. I
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: don't really have a favorite, but I think one of
- 1:52:10Speaker 4: those young guys needs to do something. I hope because
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: if they go into the season with just four receivers
- 1:52:15Speaker 4: and you know, two of them are Thornton and you
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: know Parker that have been hurt all the time.
- 1:52:20Speaker 5: It's like ice, what do you think it'd be a
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: big surprise as.
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: I mean, i'd have to probably say a slot receiver,
- 1:52:29Speaker 4: I guess, So would that be good? I mean, if
- 1:52:33Speaker 4: you know, because then he's going to be playing what
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: over juju or he's taken snaps.
- 1:52:37Speaker 5: From I'm just saying, like I'm going to operate under
- 1:52:40Speaker 5: the premise that he's not Edelman, Like I mean, obviously
- 1:52:45Speaker 5: if he turns out to be like this great weapon
- 1:52:50Speaker 5: for the next ten years in the slot, and that
- 1:52:51Speaker 5: would be awesome. I'm not anticipating like a big surprise
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: is like that's the best, Like to your point, like
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: he's better than Booty, He's better than Douglas's, better than
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: Trey Nixon's. That's not a great thing for the Patriots,
- 1:53:06Speaker 5: Like these guys should be one of those guys should
- 1:53:10Speaker 5: be expected to be a better player than a guy
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: who played quarterback last year, Right, I would hope.
- 1:53:16Speaker 4: I would hope.
- 1:53:16Speaker 5: Now if you're going to tell me he's going to
- 1:53:18Speaker 5: be a big surprise because they're going to use him
- 1:53:20Speaker 5: as this dual threat guy who like Kordell Stewart at
- 1:53:23Speaker 5: the beginning slash, Yeah, okay, that that could be a
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: surprise and that could be valuable. You know, they're gonna
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: put him in for a couple of packages to play quarterback.
- 1:53:32Speaker 5: They're going to throw him out there under center, and
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: then they sprint him out. You know, you have him
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: and Mac out there at the same time, and right,
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: no light out, you're lighting out. I'm here for all
- 1:53:44Speaker 5: of that. I think if that kind of stuff happens,
- 1:53:47Speaker 5: that could be a very pleasant surprise.
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: Absolutely, but most likely I think he's got practice squad
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: written all over him. For the reasons we've talked to him.
- 1:53:54Speaker 5: I think I'm just going off of the way he
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: talked to us. He said he's strictly a wide receiver
- 1:53:57Speaker 5: right now, and I just find it to believe that
- 1:54:00Speaker 5: you're gonna catch lightning in a bottle again like that.
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: Josh and Turner's fall rights in. Firstly, Paul is top
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: three with Mike Reese and Phil Perry.
- 1:54:08Speaker 5: Hey, that's the best compliment ever, because those are two
- 1:54:12Speaker 5: incredibly nice people.
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: Made my week when I saw that Six Rings had
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: him as a guest. If he is walking around practice
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: before it starts next Friday, I'll be the one yelling
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: in him to try to again an autograph. Secondly, i'm
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: allowed to do I don't know what we're doing it. Secondly,
- 1:54:28Speaker 2: I'm glad the Hopkins thing is over. Maybe we won't
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: make the playoffs, maybe we won't be overly competitive, but
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: I think younger players are going to get a chance,
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: and that's what I want to see from a rebuilding team.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: You guys are the number one podcast out there, keep
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: it up.
- 1:54:41Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:54:41Speaker 5: No, I that's not strong positive vibes.
- 1:54:44Speaker 4: That's my sentiment. That's what's got me excited for next
- 1:54:46Speaker 4: week is to you know, get these guys out there
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: and see what the what the kids look like and
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: you know it's I mean, you guys have experienced it.
- 1:54:52Speaker 4: I've been here since twenty nineteen. I haven't experienced it.
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: I haven't seen a new star player suddenly show up
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: on the roster and start performing it star level and
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: be like, oh my god, we got a guy right
- 1:55:03Speaker 4: now like that. I just haven't been here for that,
- 1:55:05Speaker 4: And that, to me is the way out of this.
- 1:55:07Speaker 4: And the most exciting thing about the team is if
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: a couple of these young kids just really really really
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: look like they know how they can play, and not
- 1:55:13Speaker 4: just oh he'll make the team, Yeah he'll be the
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: fifth receiver. No, Like, I mean, wow, this is a
- 1:55:18Speaker 4: this is a special pair.
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: And my boys on my show is always telling me,
- 1:55:21Speaker 5: you know, don't cross sports, right, but like it's kind
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: of like the Red Sox. Like I'm not really overly
- 1:55:26Speaker 5: enthusiastic about the twenty three Red Sox, but what does
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: have me encouraged is they have a handful of younger
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: players that look like they might be here in two
- 1:55:35Speaker 5: or three years, like Brian Bail, like I watch. You know,
- 1:55:39Speaker 5: obviously yesterday was not a good example, but that's a
- 1:55:43Speaker 5: guy that you could build on. Garrett Whitlock. I don't
- 1:55:46Speaker 5: know about him yet.
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: But Yoshida he seems like a wild card.
- 1:55:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I don't know why.
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: You know, it's like he should be.
- 1:55:56Speaker 5: But like Yoshida, you know, looks like you know, they
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: went out and identified a guy they got mocked and
- 1:56:00Speaker 5: ridiculed for it. He's you know, he's been okay.
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: It leads the American League in average.
- 1:56:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, but they told me, those same guys
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: tell me that average doesn't matter. So I want, you know,
- 1:56:09Speaker 5: I want to see more. I'm not, but but all
- 1:56:11Speaker 5: of a sudden, there's what you think might be a
- 1:56:15Speaker 5: nucleus of four or five players that will be you know,
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: obviously Devers is part of that because you invested in
- 1:56:20Speaker 5: him long term. You know, maybe Tristan Cassas, he's been
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: a little bit better the last month or so than
- 1:56:25Speaker 5: he was earlier in the year. So they didn't have
- 1:56:29Speaker 5: any of this last year. They didn't have any of this.
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: Last year, Rob rights in, I wanted to get some
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: quick offseason bantering before things pick up with training camp.
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: Won a few shows ago, Fred said white pizza is
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: not real pizza. I stand by that. While I agreed
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: with the previous statement about Italian subs needing oil vinegar
