King Mountain HRA
If you’re tired of following others’ footsteps, head to the King Mountain Hiking and Riding Area south of Ashland. There are no established trails here, so you can wander far and wide across the prairie, through the deep coulees, and among the sandstone pillars. If you look closely, you can spot ancient rock art on the cliff walls and tipi rings in the open areas. Mule deer and pronghorn frequent King Mountain, and the many coulees and small canyons provide an excellent place to spend the night, if a single day of exploration isn’t enough.
