Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Give Yourself Some Credit
Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: I am beside myself that we are now officially in May.
- 0:24Speaker 2: When did this happen?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Emily, here you were listening to five Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Hi. Hello, what's up? I am in such a good mood.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I just got home from hosting an event for SATFA,
- 0:39Speaker 1: They're a mattress company, and the event was me doing
- 0:44Speaker 1: a fireside with Elia Melanin, who many of you may
- 0:48Speaker 1: know as the quad God, a figure skater extraordinary three
- 0:53Speaker 1: time world champion, made a lot of headlines during the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Winter Olympics this year and it was soh so fun.
- 1:02Speaker 2: He's such a ray of light. It was interesting.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Before we got to chatting, one of the executives from
- 1:09Speaker 1: the company asked me if my manager was in the room. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 1: for context, I don't have a manager. I've never had
- 1:16Speaker 1: a manager. It's something that I'm definitely open to because
- 1:20Speaker 1: even though at times I do feel like i'm spread thin,
- 1:23Speaker 1: I think I have more bandwidth. So the thing about
- 1:26Speaker 1: getting a manager is that they take a percentage of
- 1:29Speaker 1: your deal. But if someone is finding me more work,
- 1:33Speaker 1: then for sure it's something that I would be open to.
- 1:36Speaker 2: But I digress.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I had this moment as I was leaving the event,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and I kind of have this tradition, if you will
- 1:43Speaker 1: call it that. After I host her, I have to
- 1:46Speaker 1: be on an energy deal in front of a lot
- 1:49Speaker 1: of people. I always either take a long walk or
- 1:52Speaker 1: I go to my favorite restaurant which is now closed
- 1:56Speaker 1: for repairs, and maybe I'll have a glass of wine.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I just takes time for myself. And as I'm walking
- 2:03Speaker 1: downtown this morning, I grab myself a icemacha at Blank
- 2:08Speaker 1: Street and I'm headed for the Q train and just
- 2:12Speaker 1: thinking about that, ask about that assumption, where is your manager?
- 2:18Speaker 1: And I know that this person meant nothing by it,
- 2:21Speaker 1: but it made me feel in the moment actually quite
- 2:25Speaker 1: proud and quite grateful, because I don't think I give
- 2:29Speaker 1: myself enough credit for the hustle.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I've had such a privilege.
- 2:35Speaker 1: At this point to host events during major moments on
- 2:39Speaker 1: behalf of big brands, especially within the health fitness wellness space,
- 2:44Speaker 1: ranging from Nike and Adidas to Dick's Sporting Goods, Dove, Athleta,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Asix Brooks, New Balance.
- 2:52Speaker 2: The list goes on.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And all of these events that I've hosted, all of
- 2:57Speaker 1: the work that I have done, but it's because I
- 3:01Speaker 1: put myself out there. It's because I was willing to start,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and I firmly believe that it's because I make sure
- 3:09Speaker 1: to treat people well, to be kind, to be someone
- 3:13Speaker 1: that people want to work with. And I'll be the
- 3:16Speaker 1: first person to admit that I find myself so often
- 3:20Speaker 1: in the comparison drap. I am asking myself, are you
- 3:26Speaker 1: doing enough?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Should you do X?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Could you be here? Should you be doing more? I mean, yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you get the vibe here. And with that said, I
- 3:36Speaker 1: also need to take a step back and just be
- 3:39Speaker 1: proud of what I've done, of how much I've put
- 3:42Speaker 1: myself out there, and that I have really stayed true
- 3:47Speaker 1: to who I am.
- 3:49Speaker 2: In the midst of all this.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's also not what I really ever envisioned that I
- 3:55Speaker 1: would do. I am working living a life that there
- 4:00Speaker 1: are certainly parts that I envisioned would look like this,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and I am doing things that I never anticipated, and
- 4:07Speaker 1: I think that's really fun. I think it's really beautiful,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and again, it makes me really proud. My listener prompt
- 4:15Speaker 1: Thought prompt for you this week is what are you
- 4:18Speaker 1: not giving yourself enough credit for what's.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Going on in your world that maybe you.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Need to take a beat, stop appreciate and give yourself
- 4:26Speaker 1: the props that you deserve.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Hey, Emily, my name is Tara and I'm about to
- 4:34Speaker 1: move to New York from Philadelphia. I'm wondering if you
- 4:37Speaker 1: have a recommendation for what area could be best for me.
- 4:40Speaker 1: For context, I am thirty one years old, single, and
- 4:44Speaker 1: my main priority is being somewhere that's safe and being
- 4:47Speaker 1: near good transportation. Any insight you can give would be
- 4:52Speaker 1: so appreciated.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Thanks so much.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Oh man, oh man, gosh. There are so many amazing
- 4:59Speaker 1: parts of New York. I spent a better part of
- 5:02Speaker 1: ten years living on the Upper east Side and I
- 5:04Speaker 1: wouldn't have changed that for the world.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I felt super safe up there.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Now there's a myriad of different subways, the four, five, six,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and the que I'm speaking in tongues for some of
- 5:14Speaker 1: you that may not be familiar. And oh my gosh,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I was up there recently and the amount of things
- 5:19Speaker 1: that are opening it is really popping on the Upper
- 5:23Speaker 1: east Side. Now, with that said, a lot of people
- 5:27Speaker 1: feel strongly that they do not want to live above
- 5:31Speaker 1: fourteenth Street, and that's because there is a lot of
- 5:36Speaker 1: there's a lot going on downtown, it's buzzy, it's young.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You get uptown it's a little bit quieter, there are
- 5:43Speaker 1: more families and babies. And then, of course there are
- 5:46Speaker 1: different areas of New York. I'm in Brooklyn. You can
- 5:49Speaker 1: go to Queens, you can go to the Bronx, you
- 5:51Speaker 1: can go to Staten Island.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Don't go to Staten Island.
- 5:54Speaker 1: But if we're talking about transportation being important, then you
- 5:58Speaker 1: want to make sure that you take a look at
- 6:00Speaker 1: subways are nearby and think about where it is that
- 6:02Speaker 1: you're going to be going most often. I live in
- 6:05Speaker 1: a part of Brooklyn where i have access to a
- 6:08Speaker 1: number of subways. I'm talking like at least eight different
- 6:12Speaker 1: lines within a three block radius, and that really helps
- 6:15Speaker 1: me considering that I'm going into Manhattan quite often. If
- 6:19Speaker 1: you're working from home, this might not be as much
- 6:22Speaker 1: of a consideration. So you could probably tell me any
- 6:25Speaker 1: neighborhood that piques your interests, and I can tell you
- 6:27Speaker 1: something positive about it.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Being in New York.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Is a once in a lifetime experience. I'm so happy
- 6:33Speaker 1: that I'm here. I can't imagine at this point in
- 6:36Speaker 1: my life being anywhere else. And this was a roundabout
- 6:40Speaker 1: way of me telling you that anywhere you end up,
- 6:44Speaker 1: you're gonna be okay.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I promise.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I hope that was somewhat helpful. Always here to answer
- 6:50Speaker 1: more questions. If you want to email me with a
- 6:52Speaker 1: listener question that I can answer in an upcoming episode,
