Transcript
- 0:00If you guys would please turn to Hebrews chapter 6.
- 0:17We're going to go through verse 9 through 12 today.
- 0:19I'm going to read verses 1 through 8 and then go right into the verse 9 through 12 so you
- 0:23can hear it and then we'll dig in.
- 0:25Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness.
- 0:28Thank you Lord for your word.
- 0:30Lord I pray that the full counsel of your word is spoken Lord that your word is living
- 0:34inactive sharper than the double-edged sword.
- 0:36Lord, your word will accomplish exactly what you have set it out to do.
- 0:42You are God who keeps his promises.
- 0:45Your word is true and Lord there is nothing in this world that is outside of your control,
- 0:51your sovereignty and your providence.
- 0:53All things will come about as a result of your plan.
- 0:58Amen Lord we thank you and praise you.
- 1:01To you be honor and glory forever in Jesus name amen.
- 1:05So some very important things I think we need to think about as we're dealing with this
- 1:09particular chapter because it seems like there's this moment within the description of the
- 1:14better high priest where the writer just goes on this conversation about our responsibility
- 1:22to grow, be mature, those types of things.
- 1:25Which really the writer is laying down some really important foundational stuff for us
- 1:28especially as we get to this point of the promise.
- 1:31Like what is the point of the promise?
- 1:33And you're going to see that the promise which builds up in verses 9 through 12 really sets
- 1:40us into understanding why the promise is so important as a high priest.
- 1:47So the high priest on our behalf goes to the father and brings the promise, the reminder
- 1:57of the promise.
- 1:58And so we're going to see that as it builds up to this point of chapter 7.
- 2:03I think it all just kind of fit together real nicely.
- 2:06So let's start off in verse 1.
- 2:09Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity not laying
- 2:15again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God and of instruction
- 2:23about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, the eternal judgment.
- 2:29And this we will do if God permits for it is impossible in the case of those who have
- 2:36once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, have shared in the Holy Spirit,
- 2:42and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come and
- 2:51have fallen away to restore them again to repentance since they are crucifying once
- 2:58again the Son of God to their own harm and holding up, holding him up in contempt for
- 3:04the land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it and produces a crop useful to
- 3:12those for whose sake it is cultivated receives a blessing for God.
- 3:16But if it abares thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed and it
- 3:22ends to be burned.
- 3:24Though we speak in this way, yet in your case beloved, we feel sure of better things, things
- 3:31that belong to salvation.
- 3:33For God is not unjust as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for
- 3:39his name in serving the saints as you still do.
- 3:43And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance
- 3:50of hope until the end so that you may not be sluggish but be imitators of those who
- 3:58through faith and patience inherit the promises.
- 4:03Wow, it's a lot being said there.
- 4:06And it's important that we understand what verses 1 through 8 are saying so that when
- 4:10we get into verse 9 when he says though we speak in this way concerning these believers
- 4:17in reality for many of us today, that is not what is for us in our case.
- 4:26So principle number one, Christ will accomplish what he has purposed and absolutely nothing
- 4:35can stop it.
- 4:36Nothing.
- 4:37It will absolutely happen.
- 4:40Here we go.
- 4:41Here's a support to verse 9.
- 4:44Philippians 1, 6, and I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring
- 4:49it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
- 4:52Do we honestly think that everything in this world as chaotic as it is, is uncontrolled
- 4:58chaos?
- 5:00No.
- 5:02Everything that is happening in this world today is God's sovereign providential hand
- 5:08at work.
- 5:10God will bring all things to a moment.
- 5:15And that moment is every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ
- 5:21is God, Jesus Christ is God to the glory of God the Father.
- 5:24He is the King of kings.
- 5:27He will accomplish what he says he will do.
- 5:30And we see this and if he's able to sovereignly and divinely providentially control those
- 5:37things, what makes you think that he can't do that for you?
- 5:42And that's really what the writer says here.
- 5:44Though we speak in this way concerning this childishness that many have lived, though
- 5:53we speak in this way, it's not in your case.
- 5:57It's not for you.
- 6:00And he uses the word beloved here.
- 6:01Now what's interesting about this word beloved is in the original Greek it's not present.
- 6:07In original Greek it literally means loved one.
- 6:10Agapetos is the word.
- 6:13Agapetos is loved one.
- 6:16Agape, love, dos, means the loved one, the dear one, the worthy one.
- 6:23You are the loved one.
- 6:26So concerning you loved one, it's not in your case.
- 6:30Concerning you.
- 6:31And he uses this term, this phrase, we feel sure.
- 6:35This word sure is persuaded or confident.
- 6:40So though we speak in this way, loved one, we are confident of better things for you.
- 6:49Interesting term.
- 6:50Confident, persuaded, we know for a fact that this is different for you.
- 6:56Why?
- 6:57Because these better things is God has made you more useful.
- 7:02God has made you more serviceable.
- 7:05God has made you more advantageous.
- 7:08God has made you more excellent.
- 7:11So concerning you, we are confident that you are more useful and serviceable and advantageous
- 7:17and more excellent.
- 7:18That's the point here.
- 7:20What a confidence that we have in Christ because of the accomplishment of the cross.
- 7:28And now he uses this word better things.
- 7:31He also says things that belong.
- 7:34It's a different word than better things.
- 7:38It's interesting they use the term things in both of these in the English because things
- 7:44that belong are things that adhere to, cling to, things that are closely joined to.
- 7:52To what?
- 7:53To your salvation.
- 7:55What is adhering to you?
- 7:57What clings to you?
- 7:59What is closely joined to you concerning salvation?
- 8:03Your justification, your sanctification, your righteousness, all the things that you are
- 8:08to inherit that's yours in Christ is yours permanently.
- 8:13It's clinging to you.
- 8:15So though we speak in this way, yet in your case, loved one, we are confident that you
- 8:23are more useful and serviceable and advantageous and excellent.
- 8:28That the things that adhere to you concerning salvation, the things that cling to you concerning
- 8:33salvation are true.
- 8:36That's kind of, that is the synopsis of what's being said in verse nine.
- 8:41Can you imagine?
- 8:43Now do you understand why the writer says concerning you, there's no worries.
- 8:50Principle number two, Christ is faithful to remember and bless his people when we purposely
- 8:58and intentionally care for one another even when we are mistreated.
- 9:04Even when we are mistreated.
- 9:07This is important because when you're dealing with the reality of the lives that are around
- 9:11you, the question is, are we gonna live the way we're supposed to when things are difficult?
- 9:19This is what it says in Romans 12, nine through 10.
- 9:23Let love be genuine, abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good, love one another with
- 9:30brotherly affection, outdo one another in showing honor.
- 9:37Hebrews 6, 10, for God is not unjust so as to overlook.
- 9:45Epi-lanthanumai, epi-lanthanumai is the word here.
- 9:51He is not unjust as to neglect or no longer care for.
- 9:56Care for what?
- 9:57Your work and your love.
- 10:01The work that you have done, the love that you have shown, these things, he doesn't neglect
- 10:07them.
- 10:08It's interesting.
- 10:11The reason why he doesn't neglect them is because he is just.
- 10:14A lot of people think that justice is the issue of dealing with the evil doer.
- 10:20Justice is also keeping care of the ones who do right.
- 10:26Why does God present authority to smite the evil doer?
- 10:32For the people of the good.
- 10:34So that we could live in peaceful and right lives.
- 10:38He is going to care for the things that you've done for him.
- 10:43That's what it means.
- 10:45He's not unjust to forget, to neglect.
- 10:48He's just.
- 10:50So he doesn't overlook these things.
- 10:52And so what we end up learning is this word agape, which everybody says is the love of
- 10:59God.
- 11:00No, it's more than that.
- 11:02It's the deepest love.
- 11:04It's the love that comes from deep within.
- 11:07Now before you came to Christ, you were dead.
- 11:11A corpse spiritually.
- 11:13Corpses don't love.
- 11:15No love there.
- 11:16Like this they do.
- 11:18Still they have passions.
- 11:21When you're dead in Christ, you have no idea what love is.
- 11:25Love is far more deeper than that.
- 11:27But when Christ awakens you, he makes you alive.
- 11:31Now you have a love that lives in you, that dwells with you.
- 11:35A love that is deep within you.
- 11:37And that's the love he's talking about there.
- 11:40It's this deep love within the person that has been awakened because of the power of
- 11:44Christ.
- 11:46Now interesting word here he says that he does not overlook your work and love that
- 11:52you have shown, that you have proved, that you have displayed, that you have demonstrated
- 12:00for his name.
- 12:03Think about that.
- 12:05Why do other religions do what they do?
- 12:09Because of the name that they worship.
- 12:12This is important.
- 12:15My kids have my last name.
- 12:17I hope and pray they carry that name on proudly.
- 12:22You know, my daughters will eventually take on another name.
- 12:26But my sons need to carry that name on.
- 12:29Well that's the point here.
- 12:31These people were grateful and excited.
- 12:33They worked hard for the name of God.
- 12:36They loved for the name of God.
- 12:38They have proved and displayed and demonstrated that everything they have done is for his
- 12:43name.
- 12:46His name is written on your life.
- 12:48Your child of the living God.
- 12:51Do we do things understanding the importance of that?
- 12:56Or do we do things just because we want rewards?
- 12:59I don't want any rewards.
- 13:01Jesus is enough for me.
- 13:03I want to do it because I love his name.
- 13:07Now here is what this word, this phrase for his name means.
- 13:15This will help kind of corral this thought on understanding the name of God.
- 13:20The thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering
- 13:30the name.
- 13:31What do you think about when you hear the name of Jesus?
- 13:38You know what the vast majority of people think about when they hear the name of Jesus?
- 13:43He's not God, he's the son of God.
- 13:49He's the king of kings and the lord of lords, but only because God the father says so.
- 13:55He's little less than the father.
- 13:57If you have any questions about that, there are a whole bunch of several different types
- 14:03of religions and denominations that look at Jesus in that perspective that call themselves
- 14:09Christian.
- 14:13Catholicism thinks he's just a little less.
- 14:18Not really God, but just enough God to save me.
- 14:22Mormons thinks he's actually the brother of Lucifer, but yet we continue to preach and
- 14:31teach that they are Christian religions.
- 14:35When you watch The Chosen, they are literally owned by a Mormon company.
- 14:45Dallas Jenkins sold him out.
- 14:50Just be honest, that's hard.
- 14:53Remember the whole debacle that happened?
- 14:57Because there's no reverence for the name.
- 14:59They don't understand the importance of the name.
- 15:03What drives you, what motivates you, what keeps you going?
- 15:06The name of the living God, Yeshua, Jesus.
- 15:13Think about this.
- 15:14This name carries supreme authority.
- 15:18This name carries the interests of all of mankind.
- 15:23This name should be the pleasure of your life.
- 15:27God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him, John Piper.
- 15:33That's called Christian hedonism.
- 15:37Third, this name commands the utmost respect.
- 15:44Not only does it command the utmost respect, this name alone is upon the commands in which
- 15:49he has given mankind, the standard.
- 15:53This name is the excellencies of all names.
- 15:57This name is on the deed of his land.
- 16:01That's his land.
- 16:04This name is the name of the greatest position in all of creation, the creator, king of kings
- 16:11and lord of lords.
- 16:13He is supreme master.
- 16:15That is the name what keeps you going.
- 16:19What's interesting is that the very work and the love that they have shown for his name,
- 16:25interesting enough, was proved, displayed and demonstrated in serving the saints.
- 16:35How do you serve one another?
- 16:38Are you willing to serve one another to the point of blood?
- 16:41Are you willing to give everything you can for the family?
- 16:45Are you just so prideful that you're going to stand on your own whim and say it's my
- 16:50way or the highway?
- 16:52No.
- 16:54That's not what we do here.
- 16:56You serve until you bleed.
- 16:58You serve until you get a job done.
- 17:00That's the point here.
- 17:02They serve to the point that they lost everything.
- 17:07When you read chapter 10 of Hebrews and you see that they considered it pure joy for the
- 17:13plundering of their property, it was because of the name.
- 17:19Why do you do what you do?
- 17:23Because you think you're important?
- 17:24No, you do it because of the name you carry.
- 17:28You do it for the name.
- 17:34Judas, the writer here, says that you have proved and displayed and demonstrated for
- 17:39his name how in serving the saints and how you love one another.
- 17:47It's not how you give to the poor.
- 17:51It's not how you go and you preach to the lost.
- 17:54It's not how you give water to the thirsty.
- 17:57It's how you love each other.
- 18:01They will know you're my disciples if you have love for the stranger.
- 18:05No, if you have love for the family.
- 18:07As a matter of fact, Jesus says if you don't love the family, you're worse than a pagan.
- 18:14You ever notice that?
- 18:17Jesus took care of his disciples every single day.
- 18:23Because he loved them first, he was able to continue to love the stranger.
- 18:26That's the model.
- 18:28Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor
- 18:32as yourself.
- 18:33Do you know what neighbor he's talking about?
- 18:36Do you think when Jesus was talking to the Jews, he was talking about the Gentile, the
- 18:41neighbor Gentile?
- 18:42No, they're called strangers and foreigners in the land.
- 18:46He was talking about the brother Jew.
- 18:51That application still applies to you today.
- 18:55That doesn't change the principle of our responsibility to love the brotherhood.
- 19:01If we cannot love each other, you cannot love the stranger.
- 19:06But we think if we go and feed the hungry, the stranger, give water to the thirsty, the
- 19:11stranger, clothed and naked, the stranger, that Jesus is pleased with just that.
- 19:17And he's not.
- 19:19We got to love the poor within our own family.
- 19:23Then we can love the poor without, out of the family.
- 19:27Think about that.
- 19:29Love each other.
- 19:30If you have any questions about that, you can read that in Acts chapter two and chapter
- 19:35four.
- 19:37Scripture says that they had all things in common, sold their possessions and gave to
- 19:41the disciples and they distributed the money as all who had need within the community.
- 19:48You ever notice that?
- 19:50They took care of the family.
- 19:52And the scripture says that the people around them was wondering what is so different about
- 19:56this community?
- 19:58And it says that God had added to their number daily those who were being saved.
- 20:03Why?
- 20:04Because they saw how we cared for each other.
- 20:06I want to be a part of that family.
- 20:09I wonder why people don't want to be a part of our family anymore.
- 20:15And so, next principle.
- 20:17And the last one.
- 20:20What Christ says he will do and it's an absolute guarantee.
- 20:34Got her.
- 20:35Got him.
- 20:37Love it.
- 20:38You got to love that.
- 20:40You know, Jesus had to be doing that too.
- 20:42Just preaching, all of a sudden a little one just do do do do do do do.
- 20:46And everybody like, get him, don't let him near.
- 20:49And Jesus says, don't hinder the little ones to come unto me.
- 20:52That's why we do what we do.
- 20:54You know?
- 20:55It's so good.
- 20:58Lesson learned.
- 20:59Oh, she's in trouble.
- 21:03Big bro got her.
- 21:04Let's go.
- 21:05All right, here we go.
- 21:06So what Christ says he will do is an absolute guarantee.
- 21:10God is not man that he should lie, nor a son of man that he should change his mind as he
- 21:19said and he will not, as he said, and he will not do it.
- 21:25In other words, if God isn't like us and he says he's going to do something, will he not
- 21:30do it?
- 21:32Or as he has spoken, will he not fulfill it?
- 21:36If God makes a promise, will he not fulfill the promise?
- 21:39That's what it says in Numbers 23 19.
- 21:42God is not a man that we should, that he should lie or a son of man that he should change
- 21:46his mind.
- 21:48As he said, and he will not do it, or has he spoken and he will not fulfill it?
- 21:54Of course he will.
- 21:56And so that's what you see in Hebrews 6 11 through 12.
- 22:00And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness.
- 22:07This word, same earnestness, earnestness is, is the definition proved by striving to accomplish.
- 22:15Accomplish what?
- 22:16The work.
- 22:19Okay.
- 22:20And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness, to have the full assurance
- 22:26of hope until the end.
- 22:29What what should we, what should we be striving to accomplish?
- 22:34Everything and anything with regard to the intended end or purpose of whatever God has.
- 22:40In other words, we shouldn't be questioning.
- 22:43We should just do it.
- 22:45We should strive.
- 22:48If we hold the name of God and we love it supremely and we are committed to his ways,
- 22:55then each of us should show the same earnestness as he does concerning keeping you.
- 23:02If he doesn't reject your work or your love in him because you have proven it and how
- 23:08you care for the saints, then you should also do the same type of earnest commitment concerning
- 23:16him.
- 23:18He will keep his promises.
- 23:21And so he says this, the full assurance of hope until the end.
- 23:26What is the full assurance of hope until the end?
- 23:29So that we will not be sluggish.
- 23:32Why should we strive to continue to work for the name of God?
- 23:36Why should we love as he has loved us?
- 23:39Why should we continue to push and strive to accomplish what's what's regarded to intended
- 23:46end or purpose is because it is our full assurance.
- 23:51This is what we know will happen.
- 23:54I was sharing this in in Bible study today.
- 23:59When you look at someone and they're at the end of their life, you ever notice they have
- 24:04this crazy confidence and assurance.
- 24:08If they're in Christ, they look at their life at the end and go, it means nothing.
- 24:16It means nothing.
- 24:19Everything is good.
- 24:21We will make it to the end and they strive and work and run harder.
- 24:28So why is this important?
- 24:30Because if you don't live in this way, pushing to the very end, striving to finish to finish
- 24:38the race, then you will be sluggish.
- 24:43Look what it says in verse 12.
- 24:45The reason why we do this is so that you may not be sluggish, no thrash, dull or lazy.
- 24:53So you're not dull or lazy, but that your imitators, this word imitators is is mimitase
- 25:00or memetase.
- 25:01Memetase is the word mimics where we get the English word mimic.
- 25:07So we imitate God, imitate Christ, but he also gives us examples of who we should imitate
- 25:14that we should be imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
- 25:20Now what's interesting is that the example he gives us right after this in verse 13 through
- 25:2620 is Abraham. Isn't that interesting?
- 25:32Why is that important?
- 25:34Why is it important that we understand that through faith and patience, we follow Abraham
- 25:41so that we like him are reminded of the promises that we will inherit?
- 25:50Because he left us an example.
- 25:53Think about Abraham, he leaves Ur.
- 25:57God says, go here, I'm going to make you a father of many nations.
- 26:01And he promises him he will do it.
- 26:04Why else would Abraham leave the land he was in?
- 26:09Because he believed the promise.
- 26:11He didn't see it coming.
- 26:16He trusted God that he will do it.
- 26:20Being sure of what you hope for in the evidence of what you don't see.
- 26:24That's what faith is.
- 26:27Faith in the promise.
- 26:30So in 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 20 says this, for all the promises of God find their
- 26:39yes in him.
- 26:41That is why it is through him that we utter our amen to God for his glory.
- 26:51The promises of God are absolute yes.
- 26:57So be it, so be it.
- 26:59Amen, amen.
- 27:02We're going to pick up next week in verse 13 through 20, hopefully I can get through
- 27:07all that, and really understand how the promise is seen in the life of Abraham.
- 27:16The reason why these three verses or four verses are so important is because we start
- 27:20to see the importance of the priest.
- 27:24Not only the importance of the priest in the acts that he does on behalf of his people,
- 27:33but he goes before God with the promises that were promised.
- 27:41He is our ambassador, because that's what ambassador does.
- 27:47So let's pray.
- 27:51Excited about the rest of this letter.
- 27:53And thank you guys so much today.
- 27:55Father I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 27:59Thank you for all that you're doing in the lives of your people.
- 28:03Help us to see the importance of the promises you have given us.
- 28:07That we live in a way that so honors your name.
- 28:12And Lord I know that there are many things in our lives that take away our focus, but
- 28:17if we keep our eye focused on the prize, we keep our eye focused on you, our finish line,
- 28:26and we have hope and assurance of hope that you are faithful and good to keep what you
- 28:32have said and to accomplish what you have purpose.
- 28:35Lord we praise you and thank you in Jesus name.
- 28:37Amen.
