Speaker 1: Chapter twenty eight, Pinocchio runs the danger of being fried
• 0:04
Speaker 1: in a pan like a fish. During that wild chase,
• 0:08
Speaker 1: Pinocchio lived through a terrible moment when he almost gave
• 0:12
Speaker 1: himself up as lost. This was when Alidoro, that was
• 0:15
Speaker 1: the mastiff's name, in a frenzy of running, came so
• 0:18
Speaker 1: near that he was on the very point of reaching him.
• 0:21
Speaker 1: The marionette heard close behind him the labored breathing of
• 0:25
Speaker 1: the beast who was fast on his trail, and now
• 0:27
Speaker 1: and again even felt his hot breath blow over him. Luckily,
• 0:31
Speaker 1: by this time he was very near the shore, and
• 0:34
Speaker 1: the sea was in sight, in fact, only a few
• 0:36
Speaker 1: short steps away. As soon as he set foot on
• 0:40
Speaker 1: the beach, Pinocchio gave a leap and fell into the water.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: Elidoro tried to stop, but as he was running very fast,
• 0:47
Speaker 1: he couldn't, and he too, landed far out in the sea.
• 0:51
Speaker 1: Strange though it may seem, the dog could not swim.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: He beat the water with his paws to hold himself up,
• 0:58
Speaker 1: but the harder he tried, the deeper he sank. As
• 1:01
Speaker 1: he stuck his head out once more, the poor fellow's
• 1:04
Speaker 1: eyes were bulging, and he barked out wildly, I drown,
• 1:07
Speaker 1: I drown drown, answered Pinocchio from afar, happy at his escape,
• 1:13
Speaker 1: how Pinocchio, dear little Pinocchio, saved me from death. At
• 1:18
Speaker 1: those cries of suffering, the marionette, who after all had
• 1:21
Speaker 1: a very kind heart, was moved to compassion. He turned
• 1:25
Speaker 1: toward the poor animal and said to him, but if
• 1:28
Speaker 1: I help you, will you promise not to bother me
• 1:30
Speaker 1: again by running after me. I promise. I promise, only hurry,
• 1:35
Speaker 1: for if you wait another second, I'll be dead and gone.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: Pinocchio hesitated still another minute, Then, remembering how his father
• 1:44
Speaker 1: had often told him that a kind deed is never lost,
• 1:47
Speaker 1: he swam to Elidoro, and, catching hold of his tail,
• 1:51
Speaker 1: dragged him to the shore. The poor dog was so
• 1:54
Speaker 1: weak he could not stand. He had swallowed so much
• 1:57
Speaker 1: salt water that he was swollen like a balloon. However, Pinocchio,
• 2:02
Speaker 1: not wishing to trust him too much, threw himself once
• 2:05
Speaker 1: again into the sea. As he swam away, he called out,
• 2:09
Speaker 1: good bye Eledoro, good luck, and remember me to the family.
• 2:14
Speaker 1: Good Bye, Little Pinocchio answered the dog, a thousand thanks
• 2:18
Speaker 1: for having saved me from death. You did me a
• 2:21
Speaker 1: good turn, and In this world, what is given is
• 2:24
Speaker 1: always returned. If the chance comes, I shall be there.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: Pinocchio went on swimming close to shore. At last he
• 2:33
Speaker 1: thought he had reached a safe place. Glancing up and
• 2:36
Speaker 1: down the beach, he saw the opening of a cave,
• 2:38
Speaker 1: out of which rose a spiral of smoke. In that cave,
• 2:42
Speaker 1: he said to himself, there must be a fire, so
• 2:45
Speaker 1: much the better. I'll dry my clothes and warm myself,
• 2:49
Speaker 1: and then well, his mind made up. Pinocchio swam to
• 2:53
Speaker 1: the rocks, but as he started to climb, he felt
• 2:56
Speaker 1: something under him, lifting him up higher and high. He
• 3:01
Speaker 1: tried to escape, but he was too late. To his
• 3:03
Speaker 1: great surprise, he found himself in a huge net amid
• 3:06
Speaker 1: a crowd of fish of all kinds and sizes, who
• 3:09
Speaker 1: were fighting and struggling desperately to free themselves. At the
• 3:14
Speaker 1: same time, he saw a fisherman come out of the cave,
• 3:17
Speaker 1: a fisherman so ugly that Pinocchio thought he was a
• 3:20
Speaker 1: sea monster. In place of hair, his head was covered
• 3:24
Speaker 1: by a thick bush of green grass. Green was the
• 3:28
Speaker 1: skin of his body, green were his eyes, green was
• 3:31
Speaker 1: the long, long beard that reached to his feet. He
• 3:34
Speaker 1: looked like a giant lizard with legs and arms. When
• 3:38
Speaker 1: the fisherman pulled the net out of the sea, he
• 3:40
Speaker 1: cried out, joyfully, blessed Providence once more, I'll have a
• 3:44
Speaker 1: fine meal of fish. Thank Heaven, I'm not a fish,
• 3:48
Speaker 1: said Pinocchio to himself, trying with these words to find
• 3:52
Speaker 1: a little courage. The fisherman took the net and the
• 3:55
Speaker 1: fish to the cave, a dark, gloomy, smoky place. In
• 4:00
Speaker 1: the middle of it, a panful of oil sizzled over
• 4:03
Speaker 1: a smoky fire, sending out a repelling odor of tallow
• 4:07
Speaker 1: that took away one's breath. Now let's see what kind
• 4:11
Speaker 1: of fish we have got to day, said the green fisherman.
• 4:15
Speaker 1: He put a hand as big as a spade into
• 4:17
Speaker 1: the net and pulled out a handful of mullets. Fine mullets, these,
• 4:22
Speaker 1: he said, after looking at them and smelling them with pleasure.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: After that he threw them into a large empty tub.
• 4:29
Speaker 1: Many times. He repeated this performance. As he pulled each
• 4:33
Speaker 1: fish out of the net. His mouth watered with the
• 4:35
Speaker 1: thought of the good dinner coming, and he said, fine fish,
• 4:39
Speaker 1: these bass, very tasty, These whitefish, delicious flounders, These what
• 4:46
Speaker 1: splendid crabs, and these dear little anchovies with their heads
• 4:50
Speaker 1: still on. As you can well imagine, the bass, the flounders,
• 4:54
Speaker 1: the whitefish, and even the little anchovies all went together
• 4:58
Speaker 1: into the tub to keep the mullets company. The last
• 5:02
Speaker 1: to come out of the net was Pinocchio. As soon
• 5:05
Speaker 1: as the fisherman pulled him out, his green eyes opened
• 5:07
Speaker 1: wide with surprise, and he cried out in fear. What
• 5:11
Speaker 1: kind of fish is this? I don't remember eating anything
• 5:14
Speaker 1: like it. He looked at him closely, and after turning
• 5:18
Speaker 1: him over and over, he said, at last I understand
• 5:22
Speaker 1: he must be a crab. Pinocchio, mortified at being taken
• 5:26
Speaker 1: for a crab, said, resentfully, what nonsense a crab? Indeed,
• 5:31
Speaker 1: I am no such thing. Beware how you deal with me.
• 5:34
Speaker 1: I am a marionette. I want you to know a marionette,
• 5:38
Speaker 1: asked the fisherman. I must admit that a marionette fish
• 5:41
Speaker 1: is for me an entirely new kind of fish. So
• 5:44
Speaker 1: much the better. I'll eat you with greater relish eat me.
• 5:50
  Speaker 1: But can't you understand that I'm not a fish? Can't
• 5:53
Speaker 1: you hear that I speak and think as you do?
• 5:56
Speaker 1: It's true, answered the fisherman. But since I see that
• 5:59
Speaker 1: you are a fish, well able to talk and think
• 6:02
Speaker 1: as I do, I'll treat you with all due respect,
• 6:05
Speaker 1: and that is that as a sign of my particular esteem.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: I'll leave to you the choice of manner in which
• 6:11
Speaker 1: you are to be cooked. Do you wish to be
• 6:14
Speaker 1: fried in a pan? Or do you prefer to be
• 6:16
Speaker 1: cooked with tomato sauce? To tell you the truth, answered Pinocchio.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: If I must choose, I should much rather go free
• 6:25
Speaker 1: so I may return home. Are you fooling? Do you
• 6:29
Speaker 1: think that I want to lose the opportunity to taste
• 6:31
Speaker 1: such a rare fish, A marionette fish does not come
• 6:34
Speaker 1: very often to these seas. Leave it to me. I'll
• 6:37
Speaker 1: fry you in the pan with the others. I know
• 6:40
Speaker 1: you'll like it. It's always a comfort to find one's self
• 6:43
Speaker 1: in good company. The unlucky marionette, hearing this, began to
• 6:49
Speaker 1: cry and wail and beg with tears streaming down his cheeks.
• 6:53
Speaker 1: He said, how much better it would have been for
• 6:56
Speaker 1: me to go to school. I did listen to my playmates,
• 6:59
Speaker 1: and now I am paying for it. Oh oh, oh,
• 7:05
Speaker 1: And as he struggled and squirmed, like an eel. To
• 7:07
Speaker 1: escape from him, the green fisherman took a stout cord
• 7:11
Speaker 1: and tied him hand and foot, and threw him into
• 7:14
Speaker 1: the bottom of the tub with the others. Then he
• 7:16
Speaker 1: pulled a wooden bowl full of flour out of a
• 7:19
Speaker 1: cupboard and started to roll the fish into it one
• 7:22
Speaker 1: by one. When they were white with it, he threw
• 7:25
Speaker 1: them into the pan. The first to dance in the
• 7:28
Speaker 1: hot oil were the mullets. The bass followed, then the whitefish,
• 7:33
Speaker 1: the flounders, and the anchovies. Pinocchio's turn came last. Seeing
• 7:39
Speaker 1: himself so near to death, and such a horrible death,
• 7:43
Speaker 1: he began to tremble so with fright that he had
• 7:46
Speaker 1: no voice left with which to beg for his life.
• 7:49
Speaker 1: The poor boy beseeched only with his eyes, but the
• 7:52
Speaker 1: green fisherman, not even noticing that it was he turned
• 7:56
Speaker 1: him over and over in the flower until he looked
• 7:59
Speaker 1: like a Marianne made of chalk. Then he took him
• 8:02
Speaker 1: by the head and end of chapter twenty eight
