Latest / Sessions Canceled / Perfect Draw! | Tabletop Shout-Out Part 2: Ep. 181

- 0:07Hey. Everybody.
- 0:16So the GM got dragged into yet another shadow game.
- 0:19It's crazy this keeps happening and we really keep telling him
- 0:22to stop accepting challenges from random white haired
- 0:24weirdos. But it is wrong.
- 0:27With you but it really is what it is.
- 0:31So with no GM sessions cancelled but I brought my dual
- 0:35mastercards. So does anyone want to play?
- 0:37No, I picked the fire deck like no wow what a basic bitch you
- 0:43are fire. No dude the fucking I loved.
- 0:46I played like a hard like a pretty sick dragon deck in dual
- 0:50masters. I had all the cool ones.
- 0:52I had Gatling sky terror, I had bullshock dragon.
- 0:54I was so happy. I am always when it comes to any
- 0:57kind of like elemental typing shit for any like show, video
- 1:01game, car, get any. I am always anti fire because I
- 1:05feel like it's always the default pick and I'm just like
- 1:07no, no rejects conformity. Like when I when I saw that the
- 1:14firebenders when I watched avatar, the firebenders were the
- 1:16bad guys. I was like you damn straight
- 1:17they are Thank God dude, I I you don't understand.
- 1:23I loved when Ang when the main character was a fucking
- 1:27airbender. I was like hell yeah dude like
- 1:29that's a different. I'm still annoyed that Tanjiro
- 1:33is basically a fire breather now.
- 1:36I that still bothers me to this day.
- 1:39Really. Yes, I wanted Tanjiro.
- 1:41I love the fact that the main character was based around water
- 1:44technique because it's makes him so much like we don't need to we
- 1:50don't need to get too down into this rabbit hole.
- 1:51But yes, I like the main character being based around
- 1:53water and the fact that the second-half of the series he
- 1:56becomes fire slash sun guy and I was just like, God damn it.
- 2:03You know what's funny, given given our topic of discussion.
- 2:06Hey, hi, hello. We're still talking about
- 2:08perfect draw. I I really like the the resolved
- 2:13the like main character. Yeah, I really like her deck
- 2:18archetype, the the battleblock battalion, because I kind of was
- 2:22expecting something really edgy or really I was expecting, I was
- 2:26expecting something closer to Yugi.
- 2:29Yeah, I was too that that deck does exist.
- 2:33It's the the the destined. But like, I kind of like, and I
- 2:36don't know, people. I I, I kind of shit on the
- 2:39goofier deck archetypes in Yu-gi-oh, but I don't know, I
- 2:41just kind of like, what was that show?
- 2:43Was was it Cubix the the robot cube toy gimmick thing from the
- 2:47early 2000s? Do you remember that cartoon?
- 2:50No, fair enough. I don't know.
- 2:53I just IA part of me is like the, the the resolves deck is
- 2:56like a Bionicle deck and you're like, ah, fuck, that's cool.
- 2:58Actually. See, I think it's funny that you
- 3:00like I, I think that's kind of funny because I'm pretty sure
- 3:04that's supposed to be based on Yuma's Go Go Go's and Gaga Gaz
- 3:08and Zexel. I'm.
- 3:10Pretty sure that's where they got the idea for that.
- 3:13It could be and it probably is and I I don't know why, because
- 3:17that was because Yuma's vibe was kind of toys like they weren't
- 3:21exactly toys in Zexel, but like aesthetically they did kind of
- 3:25look like toys right, right. I mean did you you didn't even
- 3:30like go go go magician his like his dark magician.
- 3:35I know I didn't like go magician like, but I I hate the stupid
- 3:40like don't get me wrong, I love the boncho look.
- 3:42I love the like the school tough guy with the with the fucking
- 3:47Odoro chain. But like the stupid fire pattern
- 3:51on his cloak. That just looks like something
- 3:53like it. It looks like Guy Fieri's
- 3:55magician like I I see. I I loved Gaga Gaga magician.
- 3:59I thought he was like a perfect like like a like a fun
- 4:04reinterpretation of dark magician, especially because you
- 4:07say and Jayden didn't really have a dark magician style ace
- 4:13card in the same way. You know what I mean?
- 4:16Like obviously you say had Stardust Dragon but that was
- 4:18different because Stardust dragon was more like his Slifer
- 4:21And then no I mean you say did his his arc his his original ace
- 4:25was junk warrior. Yeah, but it didn't.
- 4:28It didn't. It didn't fear.
- 4:30Was my boy when he did the sick pose and he like fucking
- 4:33cracked. The screen with the punch.
- 4:34And was like, fuck yeah, like Jump Carrier's cool, but I don't
- 4:38know, I, I don't know, he didn't feel the same.
- 4:39And the fact that they were both synchro monsters, like, I don't
- 4:43know. I just really, I don't know.
- 4:44I love the, I love Gaga, Gaga Magician's vibe.
- 4:46I thought that was a great, like reference to Yugi and Dark
- 4:49Magician and that whole thing. I don't, I like Yuba's deck.
- 4:53I think Yuba has a fun deck. I think it's stupid, which again
- 4:58is ironic. That's what I'm saying.
- 5:01Like it's it's kind of a similar thing.
- 5:04Similar. Well, you know, to be fair, like
- 5:06I don't have we don't have any like physical representation for
- 5:09the battleblock battalion. Like if the if the art for them
- 5:11was goofy as fuck, I might hate them, but like the idea of them
- 5:13is cool. I feel like it would be goofy
- 5:15looking though, Like I think that's kind of the point.
- 5:17They would look a little goofy. They might, they might.
- 5:20That's kind of why I like Yuma's deck too, because like he was a
- 5:22little goofy looking. He was like the underdog main
- 5:24character, God, a little goofy looking.
- 5:29That's yeah, that's the way I'm describing the way you.
- 5:31I don't even think. I don't think that.
- 5:32I don't think. I don't think they look that
- 5:33bad. I don't think they look that
- 5:35bad. I hate the way Yuma looks.
- 5:36No, no, I'm his cards I'm talking about.
- 5:39I also don't think Yuma looks that bad, but that's a whole
- 5:42other thing. I don't know, man.
- 5:45I don't know what to tell you. Anyway, hello everybody.
- 5:49We're talking about perfect draw again.
- 5:50Like I said, everybody hating on my boy like I'm sorry.
- 5:54It is what it is. We are picking up where we left
- 5:57off last week. We're hitting the second-half of
- 5:59the book, the card creation system, character creator, maybe
- 6:03some of the world lore, and maybe some of the GM stuff at
- 6:07the end. It's pretty bad.
- 6:08It's pretty quick and basic, so we'll see.
- 6:14Before we get into all that, though, please follow us on your
- 6:18podcast platform. Our choice.
- 6:18We really appreciate it. Yeah, actually I wanted to ask
- 6:26you, so you said before before podcast that for certain reasons
- 6:32you were you were more, you were more down for perfect job than
- 6:35you were last week. You want to give that a little
- 6:38shot real quick before we start up?
- 6:40Yeah. I mean, so I mean, we were kind
- 6:42of we kind of got into it a little bit talking about the
- 6:44main character's decks, right. So I watched a video about how
- 6:51Yugi's deck decks throughout the original Yugioh series are are
- 6:57bad and I already knew that as someone who actually played
- 7:00Yugioh IRL. Like I knew that Yugi's decks
- 7:04were bad because there was never any synergy to any of his shit.
- 7:11There was never. Yugi did not have a wind
- 7:14condition for his deck ever. Like there just was no win
- 7:19condition other than big monster hit hard which like in actual
- 7:24Yu-gi-oh is really not a win condition because you're just
- 7:28never going to get there. Like big monster hit hard is
- 7:30just not going to happen like 90% of the time.
- 7:35So like I knew his cars were bad but watching the video reminded
- 7:39me of how bad his deck is. Like the fact that Yugi always
- 7:44ran a single copy of like every card in his deck is fucking mind
- 7:51bought. Like I really like didn't think
- 7:54about that but I was like bro ran a single copy of everything.
- 7:59That is the dumbest thing you could possibly do in UK.
- 8:02I mean in basically any card game, but especially in
- 8:05Yu-gi-oh. Like are you fucking like Sir,
- 8:10were you lobotomized as a child? I I can't like Jesus Christ,
- 8:14especially, especially a card like dark magician, his ace.
- 8:17Why are you not running three dark magicians?
- 8:19There's no reason not to. You have zero reason not to.
- 8:22And I know it's because anime like it's his one special card,
- 8:25but like, shut the fuck up, get the fuck up.
- 8:29And he also referenced the fact that the dark magician is like a
- 8:31super rare card. It it it might be in in
- 8:36universe, I guess, which like, sure, fine, but I just like he's
- 8:43running a single copy of monster reboard.
- 8:46Like, dude, what are we doing here?
- 8:49Like, I mean, look, the fact that he can run monster reboard
- 8:51at all is kind of a miracle. Well, no, not at the time it
- 8:55wasn't. Yes, I know.
- 8:57I'm just monster Reborn has been in and out of the banned list.
- 9:00So many. Actually, you know what?
- 9:01I'm dead ass. I'm gonna pull up the list right
- 9:03now. Is monster reborn.
- 9:05So curious. Monster Reborn is currently
- 9:08limited so you can run one of it.
- 9:12No two. Wait, one, one or 2211.
- 9:16Sorry. Monster Reborn is currently
- 9:18limited so you can run one copy. Not bad though.
- 9:23Currently as of as of February 26th.
- 9:26Sorry, what? As of February 2nd, 2026.
- 9:31Well, can you explain to me before we get into it why
- 9:34Monster Reborn is so overpowered?
- 9:35I'm not sure I understand. It kind of depends on the meta,
- 9:42which is why it's been on and off of the banned list so many
- 9:45times. Like it's been banned and it's
- 9:46been unbanned, but it basically it just comes down to the thing
- 9:50about Monster Reborn is you can special summon a monster from
- 9:53your graveyard or your opponent's graveyard.
- 9:56And depending on the meta that is currently going on, dumping
- 10:03like all of your monsters into your graveyard to then like
- 10:07special summon them later is potentially incredibly strong.
- 10:12And certain decks, like there was a deck called the there's an
- 10:15archetype called the dark worlds that their entire shtick was
- 10:21their monsters did stuff from the graveyard.
- 10:24Like that was their like that was their gimmick was doing shit
- 10:27from the graveyard, not from the field or from their hand.
- 10:30So like a deck like that you were dumping monsters constantly
- 10:35and you could depending on set ups and stuff you could like
- 10:39double up. Like if a monster had an effect,
- 10:41it's like when they go to the graveyard or when they're
- 10:44special summon, you can like double up an effect like that.
- 10:46For example. This is one example.
- 10:49So Monster Reborn has come in and out of being relevant
- 10:53because sometimes pulling shit from from the graveyard has been
- 10:58super really like amazingly good and sometimes it's been slightly
- 11:00less good. And also being able to like if
- 11:06you can get your opponent's really strong card off the field
- 11:09and then steal it from their graveyard and then lock down
- 11:15their strategy with their own card potentially, or just
- 11:20supercharge your strategy with your like it could get into
- 11:24weird places. You can also have multiples of
- 11:26cards, like if a card is limited, but you guys, both you
- 11:29and your opponent are running the limited card, then you could
- 11:32monster Reborn and have two copies of a card that you're
- 11:34only supposed to have one copy of a of of on your field.
- 11:38Yeah, so it's shit like that. So like it's relevance kind of
- 11:42comes in and out depending on the men and shit.
- 11:44Honestly though, it being limited kind of makes it not
- 11:49worth putting in your deck now at all, to be honest.
- 11:51So, Oh, interesting. OK, I mean, not entirely.
- 11:56Like I'm sure there's probably strategies that use it.
- 11:59I don't I'm not up on the meta. I'm not up on the current meta,
- 12:01obviously. So I could be talking out of my
- 12:03ass a little bit. But the fact that you can only
- 12:07have one means your chances of drawing it are so rare that it
- 12:10it it might not really be worth it at all anymore, But I don't
- 12:14know. I'm not positive though.
- 12:16Fair enough. Well, I mean, didn't you not did
- 12:20you not have cards that are less limited that lets you deck
- 12:22searches? And then you could just deck
- 12:24search the Monster Reborn and then you could deck search.
- 12:26But deck searching for something like just monster reborn is not
- 12:30necessarily worth it unless you have a very specific plan.
- 12:37Like I said, I don't I don't know what the current meta is.
- 12:39So there may be a strategy where deck searching for your one
- 12:44monster reborn is like super worth it.
- 12:46I I don't totally know. Fair enough.
- 12:50Yeah, anyway, is it is it maybe worth talking about TCGS on this
- 12:55on this channel? No, no, we're going down.
- 13:00But I guarantee you that's a surefire way of getting Matt,
- 13:03Matt and Sam back. We're we're we're we're we're
- 13:05getting down a tangent, but I don't know.
- 13:07Anyway, all of this to go back to the original point.
- 13:10Yes, the reason. So yes, I had a bit of a like
- 13:13epiphany about this this this tabletop game.
- 13:16So I watched this video about how bad Yugi's deck is, and I
- 13:20was like, yeah, that makes sense.
- 13:21And then I also watched a video about how many times Yuki cheats
- 13:26in the original series. And again, much like his deck, I
- 13:28knew he cheated a lot, but I kind of forgot how much.
- 13:32And it's like, it's pretty hilarious, to be honest.
- 13:35Like, it's just a ridiculous amount of cheating.
- 13:37It's like 57 times, yeah. Yeah, and and it's.
- 13:41Not just cheating and you might say to yourself like, Oh well,
- 13:44he's cheating based on the actual card game rules, right?
- 13:47No, sometimes he's also cheating based on the anime's rules too,
- 13:50because the anime does have different continuity rules for
- 13:54how the game works sometimes, and sometimes he's cheating
- 13:57those also which is like bro what?
- 14:02And he doesn't get called on this shit.
- 14:03But anyway, and what I realized about Perfect Draw is that
- 14:12Perfect Draw is emulating, as we said last time, not card games.
- 14:18It's emulating card game anime specifically.
- 14:23And card game anime are fucking messy and bullshit and don't
- 14:30make a lot of sense a lot of the time.
- 14:32Because what card game anime is often trying to do is emulate
- 14:38the vibe of a shonen like a demon Slayer, like a Dragon Ball
- 14:42Z, you know like a jujutsu Kaizen, right?
- 14:45Like a One Piece. They're trying to take that
- 14:47vibe, but they're trying to do that shonen feel via a card
- 14:52game, which is supposed to have rules.
- 14:55But the problem is if you want the moment where your
- 14:58protagonist does the cool asshole and has the secret
- 15:02technique that they've been training their whole life for.
- 15:05That doesn't really work if you're actually trying to obey
- 15:08the rules of a card game because luck in RNG could just not be on
- 15:12your side. And then your shonen protagonist
- 15:14can't do their cool asshole like secret technique maneuver.
- 15:17So the anime. So the card game animes will
- 15:22often just break their own rules or do some crazy bullshit to
- 15:26make it work. So they're messy.
- 15:29And what I realize is perfect draw is a messy game because
- 15:35it's emulating a messy source material.
- 15:38And if they want to emulate the messy the the source material as
- 15:42as honestly as they can, that's going to by extension make the
- 15:47actual tabletop game kind of a fucking mess because that's
- 15:50really the only way you could do it.
- 15:52So like, it's sort of, it's sort of like the game is almost badly
- 16:01designed on purpose. Like it's kind of a mess, but
- 16:06it's intentionally kind of a mess.
- 16:09So they, they nailed the feeling like spot on basically.
- 16:18And so a lot of my frustration, I I kind of realized a lot of my
- 16:21frustration with reading and trying to understand the game is
- 16:25that it's about as frustrating as trying to understand the
- 16:30bullshit Yugi is pulling in the fucking anime.
- 16:34Oh, I mean, that loops it back around to making it peek in like
- 16:38a weird. So yeah, like kind of, yeah,
- 16:41yeah, it kind of loops back around to the big peek if if you
- 16:44want, if you want the shonen card game battle anime feeling.
- 16:54And you, you specifically want the feeling that the show does
- 16:58like, and only the show, like you don't give a shit about it
- 17:01feeling like an actual TCG in any way.
- 17:04Then like, yeah, it's, it's kind of nailing that.
- 17:09And so you come back around to like mission accomplished.
- 17:15The thing you just have to be aware of or or like pay
- 17:20attention to when you're playing the game is that it's emulating
- 17:25an inherently messy source material.
- 17:27So the game is going to probably feel inherently messy.
- 17:31So as long as you're understanding that it's fine,
- 17:37it's actually it, then it becomes good.
- 17:39Actually. The thing that is also funny
- 17:43though, is by extension is that realization also means that this
- 17:47tabletop game is even less so for people who like, like I said
- 17:54last time, this is not a game that's going to appeal very much
- 17:57to anyone who doesn't understand the source material or doesn't
- 18:00care about this, that you know, the anime source material.
- 18:04The the, the, the realization I just explained makes that even
- 18:08more true. Because now not only are you not
- 18:12gonna entirely understand what the vibe is trying to go for,
- 18:15you're also maybe gonna be a little confused as to why it
- 18:18seems like the game doesn't work 100%.
- 18:21And it's 'cause it's pulling from a thing that doesn't work
- 18:23100%. But if you don't know that, so
- 18:26like, yeah, trying to get your friend who only plays DND to
- 18:29play this game is not is is not gonna.
- 18:32Good luck. Good fucking luck.
- 18:34Fair enough. I I still think I disagree.
- 18:36I I don't think this game is actually that messily designed.
- 18:39I think you have to think about it in two separate scope of
- 18:43mines the card game in the in the game that surrounds the card
- 18:46game. I think the card game is really
- 18:47well designed. See, I think that the card game
- 18:52is less well designed, but you can see that's because they put
- 18:56all of their attention into the thing that they really cared
- 18:58about, which was the card game design.
- 19:00See, but I think the card game is the messiest part because
- 19:03it's so open-ended and how it works and the fact that you can
- 19:06literally there is literally a move in the game that is I pull
- 19:11out the card exactly that I needed and I make up the effect
- 19:14on the spot and then we'll worry about balancing it later.
- 19:17Like that's literally a core move in the game.
- 19:21It is you know what I mean? It is so like I think the card
- 19:25game part is the messy part, but again, that's kind of the point.
- 19:29So it works. It's very weird.
- 19:32It's a very strange, it's a very strange game.
- 19:34Like I really can't again, if you're not someone who who it's
- 19:41like for this game to work, you need to be again, like like I
- 19:45said last time, this game is a niche on a niche on a niche,
- 19:47right? And if you don't know all three
- 19:51niches we're trying to hit here, it's it's gonna be a tough sell.
- 19:56It's gonna be a tricky one. Like someone might like the idea
- 19:59of it. Like someone might hear the
- 20:00premise of the game and like it, but not once they go to play it,
- 20:04not really know how to play it. You know, like don't really like
- 20:08know what to do. And don't get me wrong, this is
- 20:10true of other tabletop games, right?
- 20:12People will hear about the idea of DND.
- 20:15And then not really know how they're supposed to enact the
- 20:19idea of DND while actually playing DND.
- 20:22Like that is true of all tabletop games.
- 20:24This game just cranks that problem up to 11 because it's
- 20:30it's so specific in what it's trying to enact.
- 20:34You know, I will definitely give you the specificity.
- 20:36It it if you're like, I prefer, if you're not super in on the
- 20:40vibes and like the source material, yeah, it's going to be
- 20:42it. It I'll give you that.
- 20:43It is a tough sell. It's it's a tough sell.
- 20:46Like, you know, here's the thing though.
- 20:50It sounds like I'm saying a negative.
- 20:51But on the positive side of what I'm talking about, it is worth
- 20:55pointing out that when you design A game to be hyper
- 21:01specific to a specific audience and a specific niche, that tends
- 21:06to be when you make the best games, right?
- 21:08Like making games that are super generic to the widest audience
- 21:13generally gets you the least interesting stuff.
- 21:16So in that regard, you kind, we kind you have a very interesting
- 21:22game on your hands. So if you're into the weird, if
- 21:27you're into what they're selling, you're going to be
- 21:28really into it, you know? Yeah.
- 21:31So like, there's that element to it too.
- 21:34And again, I am into what they're selling for the most
- 21:36part. So, you know, I'm not, I'm not
- 21:38even really hating. My initial frustration was
- 21:42feeling like the game part of the game was like almost like
- 21:49not finished or not fully realized.
- 21:52But now what I'm realizing is no, it is fully realized.
- 21:57It's fully realized in a very specific way and it create it,
- 22:03it, it ends up being a bit of a weird like feedback loop
- 22:08situation almost. So yeah.
- 22:12You mean where where the design reinforces the theme, which
- 22:15reinforces the design, which reinforces the theme?
- 22:17Kind of, Yeah. But the design and the it's like
- 22:21the design is bad because the theme is bad.
- 22:24But then it comes back around to being good, but then it goes
- 22:26back around to being bad. Like, you know what I mean?
- 22:29I, I think, yeah, I mean, I don't, I don't know.
- 22:31I think the, the word bad, we got to, we got our place.
- 22:33That is maybe not the right word, but like chaotic and
- 22:38messy. I thought a bit of a cluster,
- 22:41like a little bit of a cluster, 'cause I can just Sir, Sir, Sir.
- 22:44Right, right. We're 20 minutes in.
- 22:46I got it. We got to get to actually put
- 22:47the meat and potatoes. OK, fine.
- 22:49I just, my final point is I just, I can envision the player
- 22:53who doesn't, who thinks the idea is interesting but is not super
- 22:58into something like Yu-gi-oh. And then the game is like you
- 23:01need to design your entire deck from scratch and the player
- 23:04looking at it and go, yeah, I don't know about that one.
- 23:09That's just, I just constantly, I'm always thinking of that
- 23:12person. I was, I was on the edge of
- 23:15being that person when I was reading this game.
- 23:17So yeah, I mean, like, like I said before, you don't actually
- 23:22have to do that. Like the you don't have to do it
- 23:23really anything from scratch. The game gives you so many
- 23:26resources. No, not 100%, but we'll get to
- 23:30it. From scratch, it's true.
- 23:33That being said, where we left off was the very start of the
- 23:37card creation system and a buckle in.
- 23:40It's a doozy. I mean, this is the, this is the
- 23:44meat and potatoes of this game. Yeah, I like, yeah, I like I
- 23:47always talk about how tabletop games always have like, their
- 23:52one mechanic that is like, this is their thing.
- 23:55This is their core, their butter, their everything.
- 23:58This is this is that. This is the one mechanic.
- 24:01This is the the card creation is the core mechanic of this game
- 24:05by far. Yeah, it it is.
- 24:07It is as integral to the game as the character creation system,
- 24:11perhaps even more. Arguably more.
- 24:14Yeah. Like your character is almost
- 24:16secondary to your deck a little bit.
- 24:19Yeah. Like your character reinforces
- 24:21the deck, not necessarily the way around.
- 24:23And while it is technically optional, it still serves as a a
- 24:29really important touchstone to understanding the nuance behind
- 24:35card creation so that, you know, when you use the the Ardian
- 24:40combat moves later on, you'll kind of understand where the
- 24:42game is coming from, what it asks that of you.
- 24:45Yeah, it it actually begin a little earlier back to the
- 24:51keyword section that I had left out in the card game combat
- 24:54section, because I feel like this is a more important place
- 24:56to talk about it. It's slightly weird that the the
- 25:00game refers to the deck building thing as like optional, which
- 25:02like I get what they mean by it, but it is a little funny to say
- 25:05it that way because like you do need a deck.
- 25:08You do need a deck. Well, so they're saying it's
- 25:10optional because you have they provide decks.
- 25:12I get what they mean. 10 pre made decks and and dozens of pre
- 25:16made cards. Like, it is purely optional, but
- 25:20it's important to understand the methodology behind the rules
- 25:26because at some point you are probably going to make a card
- 25:28that isn't in the list or isn't as described.
- 25:32Well, I think at some point you're just going to want to
- 25:34make a card. Yeah, you probably are.
- 25:38Yeah. Seems I, I feel like any, if
- 25:41anyone plays this for any extended period of time, they're
- 25:43going to get to the point where they're like, I want to make my
- 25:45own thing now. Like, I it seems unlikely you
- 25:47wouldn't get there. Yeah, I can't, unless you are
- 25:51just Yuga somehow got roped into playing this campaign and you
- 25:55really don't want to play it, but you don't want to leave this
- 25:57group just Thursday nights are are otherwise completely
- 26:00uneventful. So you're kind of just here
- 26:02vibing. Yeah.
- 26:05But yeah, the keywords are a pretty basic tag system.
- 26:12Cards that you create or find or or interact with will have at
- 26:16least one of these keywords on them, and it's important to
- 26:19understand what they mean. So when you start making the
- 26:21cards or when someone brings them up, you, you know you're
- 26:23not looking at it. Like what the fuck is that?
- 26:27The keywords are as follows. Overwork, strengthened,
- 26:32overwhelm, underwhelm, piercer, sniper, teamwork, follow up,
- 26:39blocker, inconspicuous, humble, and pressure.
- 26:48As a basic overview, overwork essentially just means that when
- 26:52you play a card with this tag, you cannot play a staple or an
- 26:55invocation on the next turn. Basically meaning the card is so
- 26:58chunky that you have to you basically get like summon
- 27:00sickness for a moment. Strengthened effectively takes
- 27:03your character, whatever your warrior strength is, or or sorry
- 27:07any of your your card strength is in upset one level.
- 27:11So Weak become strong, strong become right, Weak becomes
- 27:15normal, Normal becomes strong, and Strong gains the overwhelmed
- 27:18tag. Speaking of which, Overwhelm
- 27:21guarantees that you will always win clashes with cards of the
- 27:24same strength. Underwhelm, as you can assume,
- 27:27does the opposite. Piercer allows you to deal
- 27:30damage to a player, even the Sorry deal damage to a player
- 27:34upon destruction of a card. Sniper allows you to bypass
- 27:39other enemy like our enemy warriors to attack the the
- 27:43player directly. Teamwork is pretty cool.
- 27:45It allows if you have more than one card in the field of the
- 27:49same strength, they essentially can pull their strength together
- 27:52to form a monster of one strength higher.
- 27:55Kind of like a fusion except they unfuse after the attack.
- 27:59Blocker allows you to intercept incoming attacks to protect your
- 28:03monsters. Follow up allows you to play a
- 28:05card after that one card that you're guaranteed per turn.
- 28:09Not counting for staples of course.
- 28:11Inconspicuous means that it can't be targeted.
- 28:13It's like the Magic the Gathering flight fumble
- 28:18essentially works like a trap card.
- 28:20It essentially it you describe how you want the fumble to work
- 28:24and when it's triggered it makes it to the opponent's play
- 28:28doesn't go the way it wants, and they would therefore have to use
- 28:31a counter your opponent's play move to stop it from happening.
- 28:35And then finally, Pressure essentially just allows you to
- 28:39add +1 to your attention while that card's on the field.
- 28:44Pretty basic. It's also worth mentioning that
- 28:49each of these keywords, when you look at the section, has a
- 28:52unique little blurb called Costing This effect that
- 28:55basically goes into some general details about what you want to
- 28:59think about when you add that keyword to a specific card and
- 29:03how powerful it could theoretically make that card
- 29:06under certain Canoe. Got it.
- 29:11Everybody clear on that? All right, cool.
- 29:14No, repeat all that again that that shit ain't happening.
- 29:18Again. No, I don't want to into the
- 29:22card creation system itself. We're going to start pretty
- 29:25basic with the staples. We talked about staples last
- 29:27time, but if you don't remember, staples are generalized, often
- 29:32weaker cards that provide the the decks that you create a
- 29:36level of consistency. Staples themselves, as the name
- 29:40implies, invokes the fiction of universal cards that, in theory,
- 29:43anybody could have. Think Monster Reborn, Pot of
- 29:46Greed, Monarch, Monocards for the Magic the Gathering players
- 29:51mean land cards. Yeah, sorry, you can tell we
- 29:57both don't play Magic. Fair enough.
- 30:00An interesting thing to note about this, because I was
- 30:03thinking about this as I was reading the book up until I got
- 30:05to this point. As we mentioned last time, your
- 30:08deck at level 1 consists of four cards.
- 30:11But when you think about Yu-gi-oh, right?
- 30:14You think that Yugi doesn't just have 4 cards that he's known
- 30:17for, right? He's got a Celtic Guardian,
- 30:19Buster Blader, the Magnet cards, Kiribo.
- 30:22He's got all of these little normal cards that aren't
- 30:24necessarily his Ace or the Egyptian gods or anything.
- 30:28Staples that count as this because the game states that
- 30:32you're supposed to rename the staples to better fit them into
- 30:35your card deck. So to a normal, you know, when
- 30:40you when you would take the card, when you take the Summon
- 30:41Night card, which creates a normal monster, That would be
- 30:44your Celtic guardian. That would be, you know, for my
- 30:47dual master players out there, the Immortal Baron Borg.
- 30:49That's just your guy. It's worth doing because you'll
- 30:56be playing these cards a lot. A lot of the decks that are pre
- 31:01made pretty much consist of primarily throwing staple cards
- 31:04out and then using their ace and unique cards to support the
- 31:08staples. So again, very much worth
- 31:11thinking about. To give a quick rundown of the
- 31:14staples and what they do, you have some at night rates.
- 31:17A normal warrior fireball deals one damage to the the competitor
- 31:21directly. It's a burn card on kind of on
- 31:23the page. Quick thinking allows you to
- 31:25draw one card. It's your pot of greed.
- 31:27Summon dragon This actually has overwork on it as I don't use
- 31:32phrases like burned. Let's not let's say I get tuned
- 31:35into this awesome TCG lingo. Fair enough.
- 31:38Summon dragon We have an example of overwork here.
- 31:41It creates one strong monster. The give off being that you can
- 31:44create one powerful monster, but you can't summon or you can't
- 31:46use staples or invocations. Next turn Summon army let's you
- 31:50summon 2 small monsters saying call I'm I'm I'm going to say
- 31:55monster and warrior pretty interchangeably.
- 31:56You're just going to have to live with me on.
- 31:59Salve allows you to heal one health Reconsider is pretty
- 32:02cool. You draw 2 cards and then take 2
- 32:04cards from the bottom from your hand and put them in the bottom
- 32:07of your deck. Destroy let's you destroy one
- 32:09target, item or monster. Double Strike let's a warrior
- 32:13attack twice. Magic weapon strengthens a
- 32:15warrior. Silence allows a warrior or
- 32:20monster the opponent controls to essentially lose all of its
- 32:22effects for the rest of the turn.
- 32:24And Augury allows you to search your deck and put it in your
- 32:27hand and then search your deck for a card, put it in your hand,
- 32:30then shuffle your deck. I, I, I, I do want to mention
- 32:34something that a, a thought I have, and this is kind of an
- 32:38incomplete thought because I haven't played the game, but so
- 32:43you start the, the game with four, four cards in your deck.
- 32:48And I, I forgot exactly where it says it, but somewhere in the
- 32:51book, it's like generally your deck you want to keep between
- 32:554:00 and 8:00 cards. That's like roughly where you
- 32:58want to operate. And I'm just, I'm really curious
- 33:03how that only four to 8 is really small.
- 33:08And I'm really curious how that feels because like obviously in
- 33:12an actual, like in actual Yu-gi-oh, the the minimum size
- 33:16of a deck is 40 cards. And in Magic I think it's 60, I
- 33:21think, don't quote me on that. So like the idea of you have
- 33:27like 8, maybe you have 10, like 10 would be big in this game.
- 33:32I'm very curious how your deck is going to feel when it's
- 33:36really tiny. And because like, if you only
- 33:40have 4 cards in your deck, that means you have a one in four
- 33:42chance of drawing any of your cards as opposed to A1 in 40.
- 33:46You know what I mean? Like I'm just, I'm just, I'm
- 33:50curious how the math, like not how the math works so much, but
- 33:54just what the, what the mouth feel is on that.
- 33:56Because shuffling a deck of three cards is like, it feels a
- 34:03little goofy almost, you know? It does.
- 34:07Yeah, admittedly it does feel a little, it can feel a little
- 34:09weird, I think. I think that's really where the
- 34:11staples come in, right? Because you technically have
- 34:14unlimited staples of two unique types, technically 3 when you
- 34:17pick your playbook. So like I said, I think a lot of
- 34:21these are part of this. Aren't the staples part of the
- 34:24starting 4 though? No, no, no.
- 34:27It's your 4 cards, then you have 3 staples.
- 34:30So your deck is technically 8 cards large.
- 34:32You just don't have to draw three of them.
- 34:34You just it just assumes that they're always in your hand.
- 34:38Oh. Oh, wait.
- 34:41What? Oh, did I?
- 34:43So staples aren't in your deck like normal?
- 34:47No. Oh, I see.
- 34:49OK, I guess I missed that. I don't know, I'm confused.
- 34:52Yeah, you can. You can play staples at any
- 34:54time. It just like that's why it says
- 34:57like your hand is technically only one card large on a on a
- 35:01filler duel, because it just assumes that you've got staples
- 35:05in the rest of your hand. I see.
- 35:10Yeah, that's still OK. This is where I will give to you
- 35:15that it feels a little messy because your your your
- 35:18imagination is doing a lot of the work for something that you
- 35:20want to be physical, especially because the game recommends that
- 35:25you create your cards. There is a if you go to the the
- 35:30perfect draw, I'll I'll we'll have we'll link the itch dot IO
- 35:34stuff in the description, but the game literally comes with a
- 35:41a card creation tool and it's pretty cool.
- 35:44I have it open right here. You essentially oh, oh, no, I
- 35:47was gonna say I do have it. You it you input all the
- 35:51information you want, right? It's name, it's type, it's
- 35:53strength, whether or not it's an ace card, you can upload a
- 35:58unique image to it and then fill out the effect in keywords and
- 36:01it will actually create a card for you.
- 36:02And you can create these and you know, align them in whatever
- 36:06photo editor of your choice that you want.
- 36:09And then you can just cut them out on paper.
- 36:12And the game does kind of expect you to actually play the TCG
- 36:15while you're playing the game. Yeah.
- 36:20Like we said, we, we, I don't like we, we talked about how you
- 36:23could do this on a VTT. It would be a lot.
- 36:27No, I I actually don't think it'd be that hard after thinking
- 36:30about it. You think so?
- 36:31I think it'd be. Yeah, no, just handouts, die
- 36:34rolls to represent draws and shit.
- 36:37I I don't actually think it'd be that hard.
- 36:39OK, I mean, there might be a cut.
- 36:44Well, I guess shuffling. I don't know how you do
- 36:47shuffling. Yeah, I don't know.
- 36:56I'd have to, I'd have to sit and tease it out.
- 36:59I I, I think it's doable, but yeah, fair enough.
- 37:04So, OK, wait, so wait, so then the so the idea is that draw,
- 37:10like, OK, wait, I did. I just completely miss it.
- 37:16So playing a staple is like your staple is almost like an extra
- 37:21deck or some shit. You just whip that shit out
- 37:23whenever the fuck you want. Pretty much.
- 37:25Yeah. And so, like, fictionally, it's
- 37:28part of your deck, but mechanically it's not Exactly.
- 37:31Yes. OK, so it says it here in the
- 37:36staples section. I was trying to find it.
- 37:37Your staples are not added to your deck or part of your hand.
- 37:40Access to them without needing to worry about drawing them.
- 37:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:43Yeah. I see.
- 37:46Yeah, yeah, Yeah. Staples are, yeah.
- 37:54OK, that's, yeah, that's weird. Yeah.
- 37:57I mean, I'll agree with you that that part feels messy to me
- 38:00because you you got some Ludo narrative disco biscuits going
- 38:03on. I mean, my, my point still
- 38:04mostly stands that I still wonder about the general
- 38:07mouthfeel of having a deck of like, only four cards.
- 38:10But again, having not played it, this is a unfinished thought.
- 38:15So. Yeah, fair enough.
- 38:19After you get into your staples, like I said you get 2 of them at
- 38:22level 1 plus your one from your playbook, you can talk about the
- 38:27you know like we said the actual meat and potatoes, the creating
- 38:31card system. The 1st and quickest one to
- 38:35speak of are the pre made cards. They are just that Perfect Draw
- 38:40provides 36 pre made cards that players can pretty easily re
- 38:44flavor or revise into the signature cards of their decks.
- 38:49The game itself suggests that first time players do exactly
- 38:53that, as it notes that it's generally good practice to study
- 38:57the guidelines that the premades follow when you're designing
- 39:00your own deck. As part of the tables that the
- 39:05premades are assigned to, the rule book lists some important
- 39:08information that's we're thinking about if and when you
- 39:11want to put your own spin on them.
- 39:13Generally speaking, the cards are designed through a point by
- 39:16style method that allows you to effectively pay more for more
- 39:23varied, more powerful effects in a system.
- 39:25Called effect points. A somewhat poorly worded point
- 39:28by system. Yeah it it's it's there's a
- 39:33couple bits where I had to read it like 3 times.
- 39:35I was like, what the? Fuck are they trying to say?
- 39:37Yeah, Yeah, I, I think I know what you're talking about.
- 39:40We'll we'll get to that probably.
- 39:43The game also explains how, and I like this, it explains how the
- 39:48effect points were purchased based on the card, which I think
- 39:51is pretty cool. So like for example, if you look
- 39:55at the pre made battle dancer, yeah, if you look at the battle
- 39:59dancer card underneath the actual card itself, it says weak
- 40:03warrior worth 3 effect points, additional attack equals
- 40:06powerful 2 and it's consistent. No, no, no, no, weak warrior.
- 40:12Has the budget of three effect points.
- 40:15That's what I mean. I maybe I the additional, the
- 40:19additional attack cost powerful 2 and consistent one, which is
- 40:24where your budget of three went. Yes, exactly.
- 40:27That's this is that's kind of what I'm talking about.
- 40:30They worded the cost and the budget are both called effect
- 40:35points and I really think that was a bad decision.
- 40:40Another another nice little point that they that they give
- 40:43you is that at the bottom of the of each pre made card page you
- 40:49get a little keyword CHEAT SHEET of the reason why I wanted to
- 40:52add this that part there. After we get to that the a small
- 40:59final point is the game offers you some pretty easy simple
- 41:05solutions for how it wants you to re flavor the cards.
- 41:09So for example the one that they give is giving the scout the
- 41:15blocker keyword, essentially turning a light attacker into a
- 41:19quick intercept unit that you can have take attacks for
- 41:23monsters if you don't want them to be destroyed.
- 41:26They also talk about the battle dancer being turned into an
- 41:29invocation rather than a warrior.
- 41:31Especially if you have a deck that focuses a lot on using
- 41:34spell casting and is buffed by your ace cards.
- 41:38After that, after premades, we have a big kahuna, the Mack
- 41:43daddy, the long Dick of the law. That is the card creation
- 41:46system. The system is surprised, maybe
- 41:50not surprisingly in depth, horrifyingly in depth, or
- 41:54aimfully in depth. It's very in depth using the
- 41:59aforementioned effect point system as well as notes and
- 42:02general rules of thumb to follow when you're creating the the
- 42:05important thing. We got to make sure we, we
- 42:07phrase here effect point budget and then effect point cost
- 42:15because the book does not do a great job of distinguishing
- 42:18those two statements. You know what I'm saying?
- 42:23I mean, I, I, I agree with you that it's messy.
- 42:26I don't think it it that tripped me up particularly, but I can
- 42:29understand how. So like like for example, if you
- 42:32there's the little chart, right, it says like a weak warrior 3
- 42:36EP. And for a SEC, for a minute
- 42:40there I was like, wait, why does a weak warrior cost more effect
- 42:43points than a strong warrior? No, it's saying a weak warrior
- 42:46has a higher effect point budget than a strong warrior.
- 42:49But again, because they use the word effect points to mean both
- 42:54the cost and the budget and do not add any distinctification on
- 42:58that confusion. So I'm saying what we're talking
- 43:03about it. We want to try and be clear.
- 43:07Fair enough. Yes, that I get what you're
- 43:11saying. Where was it?
- 43:15Yeah, sorry. It it provides some interesting
- 43:17rules of thumb when creating the the effects, which are for the
- 43:20most part pretty freeform and very freeform.
- 43:26It it allows you to create a balancing scale, in which case
- 43:32you can give those freeform effects a fact point rating.
- 43:37When creating a card, the game suggests that you do the
- 43:40following. When you're doing so, decide
- 43:43what the card's type is, be it a warrior item or invocation, how
- 43:47strong that card is, weak, normal or strong, and whether or
- 43:50not it's your Ace card. This process is detailed in the
- 43:53Defining your card section. Describe any cards you'd like to
- 43:57give right, any effects you'd like to your new card to have.
- 44:02This and the following are are defined in the Giving your Card
- 44:05Effects section. Figure out whether or not your
- 44:08card leads into your Dex gimmick.
- 44:10Figure out whether or not how powerful the card is, figuring
- 44:14out how versatile the card is, and whether or not the effect
- 44:17you're creating is consistent. Once all that's done, you can
- 44:20rehash and revise the card, adding weaknesses as necessary.
- 44:26And this is finally described in the Refining Your Card section.
- 44:33Can I just, can I just point out the versatile thing?
- 44:36I don't, Oh, brother, I, I talked about it.
- 44:39I don't, I do not understand what they're trying to say.
- 44:42I really don't. I tried, I tried like, I think I
- 44:44figured it out. I I think I did figure it out.
- 44:46OK, that's good. Yeah.
- 44:51To the first part, though, defining your card, pretty
- 44:54simple process, like I said, choosing between the three card
- 44:58types. Each card begins with a separate
- 45:01number of effect points that you are allowed to spend in
- 45:03character or in card points Budget.
- 45:06Yes, that's what I said. Like, but you can spend.
- 45:09I know, I know. I'm just, I'm trying to be, I'm
- 45:11trying to make some really clear 'cause it gets real confusing
- 45:13real quick. Each card, the three, the three
- 45:16cards, it's allotted effect points budget.
- 45:19The three card types also Warrior, Item and Invocation.
- 45:24Just as a. Reminder for those No you
- 45:27didn't. You just said the three card
- 45:28types. Yeah, I said it in the previous
- 45:31bullet. Well, I didn't hear you say Oh
- 45:35God. Anyway, the way it works is off.
- 45:39RIP Warriors have an effect point budget of three for Week 2
- 45:44for normal and 0 for strong. Items have 4 for week 3 for
- 45:49normal and one for strong, and invocations have a steady three
- 45:54effect point budget. It can't go any higher or less
- 45:58than that. I don't exactly remember if you
- 46:02can make an invocation your ace card.
- 46:04I think you can. In which I think you could,
- 46:06yeah, Invocations that is. I'm sorry.
- 46:10Your ace card, which is to say the signature card that your
- 46:12deck is built around by default, is allowed to be stronger than
- 46:16other cards, and as such is given one extra point allotted
- 46:20to its budget, and it's expected that you're allowed to be a
- 46:24little more lenient when designing its effect.
- 46:28I forget did is your are you only ever ever allowed to have
- 46:34one ace period? I don't remember if it says if
- 46:37you so you can add more aces to your deck, but the second you
- 46:40add another ace, your first ace loses its tag and you might have
- 46:45to do some work with the judge to, you know, mellow out its
- 46:48effect because it's no longer your strongest card.
- 46:51Let's see. I suppose you don't necessarily
- 46:54have to. It doesn't necessarily say
- 46:56anywhere that you would have to do that, but you can assume
- 46:59based on this system that it loses that effect point budget
- 47:03piece. So you're going to have to do a
- 47:04little work on it. On the topic of giving cards
- 47:09effects, it allows you to spend the aforementioned effect points
- 47:13to fulfil your effect point budget to power up your card.
- 47:16When doing so, the amount of effect points and ability would
- 47:19have is reduced to a simplified equation with the following
- 47:23parameters. Be prepared for lists within
- 47:27lists. On this one, it's going to get a
- 47:28little deep. I'm just going to trust you all
- 47:31to follow along, and if not, I don't know you're going to be
- 47:35doing some rewinding. Ed.
- 47:37What Ed keep note that the the cards are made at the table in
- 47:44front of and with the judge as a cooperative endeavour.
- 47:47So you're going to be doing a lot of backing.
- 47:50The first question asked is I just the the idea of that I'm
- 47:55already tired. Well so you like it.
- 47:58You know you're not supposed to do it in a heated moment, right?
- 48:01You when you need the recover a move.
- 48:05That's kind of when players can sit down and design new cards
- 48:07and it it's going to be like a session long thing.
- 48:11If every player at the table wants to design a card, it's
- 48:13going to take a little while. Yeah, maybe not a session long,
- 48:16but it's going to take an hour or two.
- 48:18It's. Yeah, it's something you want to
- 48:20do between sessions if you can. For sure.
- 48:22Yeah. The first parameter is, does the
- 48:26effect lead into my gimmick that reduces the cost?
- 48:31Well, it's weird. So it says it reduces.
- 48:33This is where I'll give Josh it. It doesn't.
- 48:35This is one of your budget. It increases your budget by
- 48:38more. It increases your Yes, it
- 48:40increases your budget by reducing the cost of the effect
- 48:44itself. Yes.
- 48:46It's worded so I don't. Yeah.
- 48:47I don't know why they didn't just say plus again, why they
- 48:51didn't just use the word fucking budget in this entire section.
- 48:54I do not understand. It really bothered me 'cause it
- 48:56had, it left me confused multiple times.
- 49:01I, I got to give credit where credit's due.
- 49:02Yeah, no, it, it is worded a little oddly.
- 49:04This is where I, this is where I will give Josh the, the messy
- 49:07argument, how powerful the effect is.
- 49:11And it's, it costs one effect point per instance of powerful.
- 49:16We'll explain that later. Versatile, how versatile it is
- 49:19one effect per instance of versatile.
- 49:21We'll explain that again. And then consistent, that is
- 49:25just one effect point. It cannot get any higher or
- 49:28lower. The gimmick question is by far
- 49:31the simplest it it probably requires the least explanation
- 49:36You just described to your judge how you feel the card fits into
- 49:38your deck gimmick and they will sort of back and forth with you
- 49:42a little bit until it's agreed upon.
- 49:44You know how the card works and if you can do it successfully.
- 49:48As we said, your effect budget is increased by one.
- 49:52I you were saying something, I just, I'm OK, I'm, I'm, I'm fine
- 49:59with the does it lean into my gimmick mechanic?
- 50:01Because obviously in terms of invoking, you know, Yu-gi-oh
- 50:06like the anime and shit like that, it absolutely makes sense
- 50:10to have this mechanic. But I can for sure see the
- 50:14arguments getting started over whether or not the effect leads
- 50:17into your gimmick. And I just the headaches.
- 50:21I can feel the headaches. Like I think honestly, I I think
- 50:27a lot of it just has to boil down to the judge being like,
- 50:33yeah, OK, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, yeah.
- 50:36Which that's that is the tact you should take.
- 50:39I could just, I don't know, all the other things you have to
- 50:43like come up with and go back and forth on like I could just
- 50:46see this, this the doesn't lean into my gimmick 1.
- 50:49I feel like in particular, I can see sparking debates.
- 50:55Well, you could have an interesting thing too, where a
- 50:57character has a card that specifically doesn't play into
- 51:01their budget. And I know in terms of meta,
- 51:02that is the less effective thing to have.
- 51:05But if you, for example, wanted like a, you know, I think about
- 51:13skull dice in graceful dice, Joey's cards that increase your
- 51:16your monster's attack and decrease the the opponent's.
- 51:19If your deck isn't about buffing and debuffing, it's just about
- 51:23doing like, you know, doing burn damage.
- 51:27It makes sense for you to be like, well, most of your
- 51:30abilities revolve around damaging the enemy directly, not
- 51:33buffing your cards up. So I would say this doesn't fit
- 51:35into your gimmick. And then, you know, a player can
- 51:39be like, OK, well, what if it doesn't do damage directly, but
- 51:42it does let my monster get the sniper property so I can, or so
- 51:46I can bypass my opponent's defenses and attack them
- 51:50directly. And then the judge can be like,
- 51:51OK, that works. You know what I mean?
- 51:54I think that's kind of how it's intended to work.
- 51:58Yeah, yeah, Like, yes, yeah, I, I get how it's intended to work.
- 52:01I and I, again, I'm not even necessarily against the
- 52:03mechanic. I just, I remember reading it
- 52:05and thinking to myself, like, oh boy, this one's going to spark
- 52:08some fucking Reddit horror stories.
- 52:10It can I it it definitely can. I'll give you that after the
- 52:15gimmick question, we have a we have the topic of a cards power
- 52:18effect, or the the power of a cards effect rather how powerful
- 52:22the effect is. Yes.
- 52:24In order to calculate a whether or not the card is receiving the
- 52:29powerful keyword, which it's not an official keyword, but it
- 52:31should because they treat it like one, it's capitalized like
- 52:34one, it's proper now like 1. The effect has to run through a
- 52:37series of prompts. The first one is does the does
- 52:41it grant additional card advantage?
- 52:44And if you were, if you didn't want to get into to TCG
- 52:46terminology, we've officially failed the assignment.
- 52:52Card advantage essentially just it whether or not it lets you
- 52:54draw a card, lets you play an additional card, lets you
- 52:57destroy an opponent. Card advantage is just
- 53:00literally, I have more cards at my disposal than you have, which
- 53:03is a combination of cards on the field and cards in your hand.
- 53:08There can be some extra nuance to it, but that's like the
- 53:11baseline. I had to look that up.
- 53:13I didn't know it top of my head. Yeah.
- 53:17It's just, do I have more cards than you have?
- 53:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 53:21Whether or not it grants additional card advantage.
- 53:23Whether or not it brings you closer to winning by creating
- 53:26monsters, strengthening warriors, dealing damage.
- 53:31Whether or not it makes it harder for your opponent to win
- 53:33by gaining life, granting significant protections, or
- 53:38providing you an item that can do the same.
- 53:41Whether or not it changes the rules of the game by making your
- 53:43opponent unable to attack, Changing what's allowed to
- 53:46happen on this turn. And finally, does it present a
- 53:49problem that needs to be resolved by making victory
- 53:52inevitable or by making winning impossible?
- 53:55With each check of the above prompts, the effect gains 1
- 54:00instance of the keyword powerful that correlates to one effect.
- 54:04Point of cost against the budget.
- 54:07So IE if a card has powerful three, its cost is automatically
- 54:13at least three effect points. Yeah.
- 54:18The game does provide guidelines later on for calculating power.
- 54:22Things like assuming law of averages for luck tests and how
- 54:25many warriors are ideally on any side of the field, what turn it
- 54:29is, how many cards you have. It gets a little into the weeds,
- 54:32but for the most part into the weeds.
- 54:34I would say it it does give you some tips on balancing when
- 54:39deciding power on to versatility because this shit is confusing.
- 54:52It is probably the trickiest part of this system and
- 54:56essentially when determining versatility, the more scenarios
- 55:00in which case a card can be utilized, the more versatile it
- 55:03becomes and therefore follows the same instancing method of
- 55:07powerful. Now, it could be due to my lack
- 55:12of general knowledge with TC GS, but given Josh's response, I
- 55:16think not. What I can easily foresee a card
- 55:19that is either more or less versatile than expected and
- 55:24would probably therefore require one or two instances of tweaking
- 55:28after the card is created just to see how it goes.
- 55:36When figuring out versatile, the game maintains that you should
- 55:40be doing so like we said, with a certain number of warriors items
- 55:43or a mix 2 cards in the hand. I just don't, I don't I This is
- 55:48the thing, I really don't understand what they're trying
- 55:50to say here. So I'm I'm just going to, I'm
- 55:51just going to read this verbatim here.
- 55:54Generally, effects are considered versatile, imperfect
- 55:58draw when they're likely to give you the option to do multiple
- 56:01things when you use them, or if the same card could be used in
- 56:05multiple different ways. OK, fine.
- 56:09Knowing whether a card is likely to give you options can
- 56:12sometimes be dependent on how the card how the game is
- 56:15progressed. But if you would have a choice
- 56:17of effects, targets, uses under the following conditions, then
- 56:20you should consider it versatile.
- 56:24Both you and your opponent have either 2 warriors and one item
- 56:27or one warrior and two items, which ever would make it cost
- 56:31more effect points. I do not understand what that
- 56:34bullet point is trying to say. What do you mean by make it cost
- 56:38more effect points and and how does that relate to the level of
- 56:45like I just I don't understand what the I don't understand how
- 56:47you're supposed to gauge the the level of versatile.
- 56:52So I I think a little bit of information on this is found in
- 56:56the choice effects paragraph below it in that little blurb
- 57:01which says. Note that if your effect allows
- 57:04for a choice of several modes, you only need to cost it at an
- 57:08amount of powerful equal to the mode that's the most powerful of
- 57:11them. For example, if an effect allows
- 57:14you to either gain to life or destroy a warrior and opponent
- 57:18controls, then it would be counted as powerful 2 to match
- 57:21the gain to life effect. However, it would also cost the
- 57:25options for Oh sorry, you would also cost the options for if
- 57:30either of them are versatile or consistent.
- 57:33In this case, because the user can destroy any of the
- 57:36opponent's warriors, the effect of the choice would also be
- 57:39considered versatile, making it a total cost of four EP Powerful
- 57:432 versatile versatile. See how is that 2 versatiles?
- 57:49So I, I guess the idea is because it can do.
- 57:54Yeah, that's a good point. I so like, like, yeah, I you get
- 57:57the idea of what it's supposed to mean, right?
- 57:59If it, it's the how many effects are in the effect, if it allows
- 58:05you to heal or destroy, that would make it versatile.
- 58:08But why it's versatile to I'm not exactly sure.
- 58:11That's that's what I mean. And then when it talks about
- 58:15when it talks about the bullet points of both you and your
- 58:17opponent have either 2 warriors and one item or one warrior and
- 58:20two items, whichever makes it cost more like in reference to
- 58:25in regards to what like Well, then the other option says if
- 58:33you have two cards in your hand, it's turned to and both you and
- 58:35your opponent have either two or five life, whichever would make
- 58:38it cost more effect points. And it 'cause it says wait,
- 58:42wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. OK, no, I think I got it.
- 58:45I think I figured it out. Do you?
- 58:47Yes, I do. So I, I, I think that second
- 58:51versatile is a typo. I think it's supposed to be
- 58:53powerful, versatile, consistent because it references
- 58:58consistency and how either of the effects are considered
- 59:02consistent. So to me, I think that that
- 59:06second versatile is a typo. And what it's saying is, is that
- 59:10when you're accounting for powerful, you choose the
- 59:13strongest effect and that becomes the power rating of the
- 59:16effect. Because the card has two
- 59:19abilities, it gains versatile 1 and because it can destroy any
- 59:23monster, it becomes consistent one.
- 59:26That's not a consistent effect. I mean, based on what the game
- 59:31describes as consistent it it is.
- 59:38I don't think that's what that's saying.
- 59:41Look, your guess goes mine, but that what's that's what makes
- 59:44the most sense to me. It does say I'm not even talking
- 59:48about that box. I'm still talking about the
- 59:50bullet points above because it says knowing whether a card is
- 59:55likely to give you to give you. Knowing whether a card is likely
- 59:59to give you options can sometimes be dependent on how
- 1:00:02the game has progressed, but if you would have a choice of
- 1:00:06effects under the following conditions.
- 1:00:13So I understand it's saying if you have a choice of effects
- 1:00:16when these conditions are met. But I don't.
- 1:00:18Understand what that parentheses?
- 1:00:19Whichever would make it cost more.
- 1:00:21AEP is supposed to mean like it wouldn't.
- 1:00:25It cost the same amount of effect points regardless of the
- 1:00:28exact situation. If you're considering it
- 1:00:33versatile, no, not necessarily. I guess the idea is that you're
- 1:00:40taking into account the effect points of the possibilities.
- 1:00:44So if you have two warriors, it could be one weak warrior, one
- 1:00:48strong warrior, 2 weak one, or you know, one weak 1 normal and
- 1:00:52one item. So there can be some
- 1:00:54fluctuation. They won't always equal the same
- 1:00:56amount. That doesn't, it doesn't make
- 1:01:03any sense. It, I, I can't, I can't make I,
- 1:01:05I don't understand what they're trying to get at.
- 1:01:08Like, like I said, I, I think what versatile just means is how
- 1:01:11many effects it has. I, I get the basic premise of
- 1:01:15versatile, but I don't understand how you're supposed
- 1:01:17to calculate it. Aaron, I, I really, I don't have
- 1:01:22enough information to, to, I guess part of what, I guess part
- 1:01:27of what it's saying is if there's two separate effects to
- 1:01:31choose from, that's two instances of versatile because
- 1:01:35it's two effects, not one instance of versatile 'cause
- 1:01:38it's one choice. No, So that's what I'm saying is
- 1:01:42I, I, I don't think that second use of versatile is a second use
- 1:01:48of versatile. I think it's, it's consistent.
- 1:01:50No, I think it is. I don't think that's AI.
- 1:01:52Don't think that's a typo because it's so it's saying OK
- 1:01:56if you have an effect that would either allow you to gain 2 life
- 1:01:59or destroy a card. I think what it's saying is you
- 1:02:01have two effects for an option. So that's versatile too because
- 1:02:05you gave yourself two options and that's why it's saying
- 1:02:09powerful 2 versatile. Versatile right?
- 1:02:12But you each individual effect is 1 instance of versatile, not
- 1:02:16the choice between them. They don't get grouped together.
- 1:02:19I think is what it's right. I see what you're saying, My my
- 1:02:22only retort to that is by that metric every card with an effect
- 1:02:27automatically would become versatile, but that's not the
- 1:02:29case. For example, if you look at the
- 1:02:32Berserker's Might card invocation on page 68, target
- 1:02:37Warrior is strengthened and gains Piercer 1 until the end of
- 1:02:40your turn. So it's an invocation where 3
- 1:02:44has a budget of three points given strength, or give
- 1:02:48strengthen and piercer. So if it's strengthened
- 1:02:52strengthen counts for two and it gets 1 versatile because it has
- 1:02:57one effect and another effect. No, it has yeah, the and is the
- 1:03:11versatile. The strengthen is the powerful
- 1:03:14and the and is the versatile, right?
- 1:03:16But in the description just or in the piece described by the
- 1:03:19choice effects, it either does 2 damage or or it heals 2 damage.
- 1:03:26Then there's no reason why it'd be versatile.
- 1:03:28Like they'd have two instances of versatile.
- 1:03:30Rather it would just say versatile too because we know it
- 1:03:32follows the same rules as versatile, which is why I think
- 1:03:36it's consistent. Because it shouldn't say
- 1:03:38versatile. Versatile it would.
- 1:03:40It would say powerful to versatile too.
- 1:03:47Well, no, it wouldn't say versatile too because they
- 1:03:48don't. I don't think they list
- 1:03:50versatile in that way. They do it says it right above
- 1:03:53it. Effects can become versatile 2
- 1:03:55or more if they're likely to give the user three or more
- 1:03:58options. But did it.
- 1:04:00But do any of the pre made cards have versatile 2 as it phrase
- 1:04:04that I don't versatile I don't think they do no.
- 1:04:12They they just have versatile. It's just a yes or Oh no.
- 1:04:16Oh, I found one. OK, yeah.
- 1:04:19So I'm I'm leaning. Towards that second versatile.
- 1:04:21Is a typo and it should say consistent.
- 1:04:26There's nothing else has that double listing I don't, but that
- 1:04:30still doesn't really answer my question.
- 1:04:36OK, I I don't know. I can't make sense of.
- 1:04:38This I really I. Don't I?
- 1:04:40I got nothing it doesn't make. Sense I doubt something
- 1:04:45something is not worded correctly.
- 1:04:49I will look the answer up. After we're done recording
- 1:04:51because I I do. Want an answer to this.
- 1:04:54That being said, moving on to the third.
- 1:04:56Effect which? Is much simpler than.
- 1:04:59This is consistency. Consistency is the final factor.
- 1:05:03You have to to. Take into account when gauging a
- 1:05:05card. 'S effect strength, consistency
- 1:05:07I think we require is very little explanation.
- 1:05:10The more reliable the card effect is, the more resistant it
- 1:05:14is to opposing the facts. The less set up it requires, the
- 1:05:16more consistent it's considered, generally speaking.
- 1:05:20That being said, a card can only have one instance of consistent.
- 1:05:23It either is or is not. It doesn't stack.
- 1:05:26Can I just, can I just, I, I, I, I went, I looked, I was looking
- 1:05:30at Invoke Dual to try and figure out why that's considered
- 1:05:32versatile too. And I don't even understand why
- 1:05:35that's considered versatile too. That seems like one option to
- 1:05:37me. I don't I'm going to invoke
- 1:05:42duel. It's a.
- 1:05:42It's an invocation. On page 60. 9 Nice, Yeah, nice,
- 1:05:48it says target warrior battles. Another target warrior.
- 1:05:51If they would. Roll to clash, they are both
- 1:05:54destroyed. Instead, you may choose two
- 1:05:56opposing warriors with this effect.
- 1:05:58How is that a versatile 2 option?
- 1:06:00There's no choice there, it just does that right?
- 1:06:07Like what is? What do we?
- 1:06:08I guess because you could. Choose the Warriors.
- 1:06:10But even in even in that case, how is that not versatile 1?
- 1:06:17I guess the idea is it's so. I don't like so it's weird.
- 1:06:22It's it's almost like 1. Versatile is folded into the
- 1:06:25other one because you your versatile one would come in the
- 1:06:30target 2 and then the initial if they would.
- 1:06:33If they clash, they're both destroyed.
- 1:06:35But it also becomes versatile because you can choose.
- 1:06:41So I guess the idea. Is is if they didn't have that
- 1:06:44that. Final sentence you may choose.
- 1:06:46It would just connect with one creature it would like.
- 1:06:50It like it would be a. Random creature I guess.
- 1:06:55I guess the idea. Being Is that because they talk
- 1:06:57about the clash clause? The fact that you can choose
- 1:07:00means that you can make it so that it doesn't destroy your
- 1:07:02monster as well. You can just choose a stronger
- 1:07:04monster, which is where the second instance of Versatile
- 1:07:07comes in, but it still should be.
- 1:07:13Shouldn't that still be a case of versatile what?
- 1:07:20No. I guess I.
- 1:07:22Guess as I'm saying. Like I don't.
- 1:07:26So get it? I guess we got to move on.
- 1:07:30We're not figuring. This out here?
- 1:07:31No, Yeah, we probably. Aren't it's fine now once your
- 1:07:35cards effect and your effects cost your effect point costs
- 1:07:39have been broadly worked out. Next step is revision.
- 1:07:42As described in the Revising your Card effects, the game
- 1:07:45suggests working with your judge to bring the cards effect into a
- 1:07:49more or into compliance with your allotted budget.
- 1:07:52This can take a while, and it's often best to find a way to
- 1:07:55compromise giving by giving a card weaknesses to reduce its
- 1:08:01overall effectiveness. For every weakness that you give
- 1:08:04the card, it will reduce. 1. Of the instances that or modify.
- 1:08:08Sorry, no for each instance of of.
- 1:08:13A weakness that you give. The card that will reduce one of
- 1:08:17its its pillars of effect or modifies them to a meaningful
- 1:08:22hindrance. You can reduce the cost of a or
- 1:08:26you can increase your budget rather by one point if a
- 1:08:30significant weakness is introduced.
- 1:08:32Which is to say. One that severely hinders a
- 1:08:35card's performance. It can be increased by two to a
- 1:08:38maximum of three, as it says one and two respectively, not one or
- 1:08:43two. That being said, be.
- 1:08:49Careful not to try to try to. Not make your card like a
- 1:08:52jumbled mess of text that's like .5 size font.
- 1:08:56Don't make an Egyptian God card where you need like a magnifying
- 1:08:58glass to read it. Egyptian card cards actually
- 1:09:01aren't that bad. No, you know what they're you're
- 1:09:04right, they're not. I've seen some more modern cards
- 1:09:06and those are. Actual nightmares.
- 1:09:07Horrifying cards like you ain't bro, Link or no Pendulum
- 1:09:12monsters have two. Different.
- 1:09:14Effect boxes? What?
- 1:09:17Yeah, 'cause they. Yeah, that's pendulum.
- 1:09:20Monsters. Pendulum monsters act as effect
- 1:09:23cards, as effect monsters, and as spell cards.
- 1:09:27Bro what the fuck am I looking at?
- 1:09:31Yeah, I like that the the effect takes up.
- 1:09:35Almost. Half the card, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:41We don't need that, we got text. Have you seen the Chaos Emperor
- 1:09:45Dragon of Armageddon? Probably hold.
- 1:09:49On hold on, I'm I'm going to. Post this in general in in our
- 1:09:53yeah, look at this fucking nightmare of a card, all right?
- 1:09:57Don't get too. Don't get too.
- 1:09:58Sidetracked, Sir. Oh yeah.
- 1:10:00Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's all I wanted to say.
- 1:10:04That's wild. Yeah, that's absolutely insane.
- 1:10:09Anyway, as a precaution the game.
- 1:10:14Suggests 2 rule of thumbs. When creating card effects, the
- 1:10:18first of which is avoid parasitic effects.
- 1:10:22Essentially, try to avoid creating cards that simply
- 1:10:25cannot function with other tightly knit cards or without
- 1:10:28them. Sorry, cards that like a.
- 1:10:32This is a slightly weird comment.
- 1:10:33They're basically saying don't make archetypes, which I thought
- 1:10:37was a little odd. No, I think what they're what
- 1:10:41they're. Saying more specifically is
- 1:10:43like. A you know, like.
- 1:10:47What's that red eye? Red eyes card where it's like
- 1:10:49this cannot be normal summoned or special summoned unless you
- 1:10:52have red eyes black chick to summon it from your graveyard
- 1:10:55and then you can summon it. That's an archetype.
- 1:10:58The archetype would be red eyes black whatever.
- 1:11:01Right But the the parasitic effect is saying don't create a
- 1:11:04card that requires that sacrifice from the graveyard to
- 1:11:06summon. But what?
- 1:11:07I'm right but that's what archetypes are like.
- 1:11:10Archetypes are effects that only proc on other cards of the same
- 1:11:14archetype. Like that is that's what most
- 1:11:17Yu-gi-oh decks are in the modern era is their archetype base.
- 1:11:20So like you don't have like a deck of stuff.
- 1:11:24You have a six samurai deck, you have Dino rabbit deck, you have
- 1:11:30what were they called gear, Gear gearbox gear gagon gear
- 1:11:35something or others gear toys wind UPS.
- 1:11:38That's what the fuck I was trying to think of.
- 1:11:39You have wind UPS like there are archetypes that have effects
- 1:11:42that all key off of each other. And this is basically saying
- 1:11:45don't have effects that specifically key off of each
- 1:11:47other in that way, which is pretty much what an archetype is
- 1:11:50in Yu-gi-oh. I think it's saying you know you
- 1:11:53can have it. Seems like to me what it's
- 1:11:55saying is you can have cards that key off each other, but
- 1:11:58don't have cards that literally cannot survive without the
- 1:12:02other. It's kind of the same.
- 1:12:05Thing. Yes, but.
- 1:12:07There are degrees of it. To be honest, I don't
- 1:12:11necessarily know if. I could tell you like.
- 1:12:13If I designed an effect or if a, if a player was designing
- 1:12:16effects, I don't know if I could 100% tell you if the effect was
- 1:12:18parasitic or not, but I feel like I could.
- 1:12:21Well, I mean if you just look at the sample cards that they have
- 1:12:25for the for the, for the playbooks, those they have
- 1:12:31archetypes by name, but their effects are not archetype based
- 1:12:35like what they're talking about is for example.
- 1:12:39You know. Something along the lines of if
- 1:12:41you play Dark Worlds, if you have a Dark World card in your
- 1:12:46hand and you send this Dark World card to your graveyard,
- 1:12:50you may then special summon it the next term.
- 1:12:52Like that's a parasitic effect. Because the idea is you need
- 1:12:56something else to make the effect work.
- 1:12:58So they're saying avoid that archetype synergy and make cars
- 1:13:02that are slightly more generic basically and don't have to
- 1:13:06specifically that don't need like if then clauses from other
- 1:13:15cards, you know, like. If you look again, if you look.
- 1:13:20At. If you look at the sample.
- 1:13:24Starting decks for all of the. Playbooks, you'll see how none
- 1:13:27of the cards, even though they'll give them the same
- 1:13:29names, they do not have an effect that calls out each
- 1:13:33other, which is really what it comes down to.
- 1:13:37OK, OK. I see what you're saying.
- 1:13:39Like if you like, I guess to that point, yeah, I guess what
- 1:13:41you're saying, what they are saying is you don't want, you
- 1:13:44want to use the keywords to reinforce.
- 1:13:46Architects. Or or or yeah, not archetypes.
- 1:13:49You, yeah, don't use the keywords to reinforce
- 1:13:51archetypes, don't use effects to reinforce archetypes, don't use
- 1:13:53effects, and don't make like, literal archetype combos, which
- 1:13:57is how the actual TCD works. Like you'll see.
- 1:14:02When, particularly when you look at.
- 1:14:04Archetype cards in modern Yukio. It'll say like the name of the
- 1:14:07archetype in parentheses. It'll be like if you have a wind
- 1:14:11up card in your hand and the word wind up will be in
- 1:14:14parentheses because wind up is an archetype.
- 1:14:18Hilariously, none of the. Well, no, Jaden the.
- 1:14:24Elemental heroes are an archetype, you know what I'm
- 1:14:29saying? Although I don't think any of
- 1:14:32the other main characters have had archetypes like that.
- 1:14:35Weirdly, Yuki definitely doesn't.
- 1:14:38Jaden has elemental heroes. Yuma doesn't.
- 1:14:42You say? Does you say?
- 1:14:43No, he doesn't. Yes, he does.
- 1:14:45Think so. What would be the archetype?
- 1:14:47The junk archetype? No.
- 1:14:50See, but that's the thing though, those aren't.
- 1:14:52Actually an archetype. No, they are 'cause there there
- 1:14:56are. Cards in in U says like I
- 1:14:58played. The junk deck.
- 1:14:58There are cards in the in the deck that specifically proc off
- 1:15:01of the junk keyword sort. OK, we're too in the we don't.
- 1:15:07We don't. This is This is too much.
- 1:15:08Of the weeds on the game. Itself so we.
- 1:15:09Don't need to worry this, but I know, but it's kind of not
- 1:15:13exactly an archetype that I don't I.
- 1:15:14Don't have time to? Get into it, but it's kind of
- 1:15:16not OK. Wait, it's a structure deck?
- 1:15:21They sell it. As a structure, is that not?
- 1:15:22Is that? Not indicative of an archetype.
- 1:15:24No, what the No, it's a very. Specific thing.
- 1:15:29That really. Only applies to modern.
- 1:15:31Yu-gi-oh and it really only started to being a thing like
- 1:15:35halfway through post post 5. Halfway.
- 1:15:38And or post 5DS Weird you say has a little bit of it kind.
- 1:15:43Of Jayden. Is the Jayden is the main
- 1:15:46character with the most true archetype deck?
- 1:15:48Let's put it that way. OK, fair enough.
- 1:15:54Or what was I? Oh.
- 1:15:55Yeah, OK. The second rule of thumb.
- 1:15:56Is God damn it I'm I so jumbled my notes on this one.
- 1:16:00The second rule of thumb is don't try too hard to win.
- 1:16:04Basically don't create cards with the sole intent of making
- 1:16:09them as meta powerful as possible.
- 1:16:11Don't make cards that can. You know, I think the the
- 1:16:16example it gives is don't create a card that you know.
- 1:16:21It has the sniper. Keyword and deals 3 damage
- 1:16:24because you know that the opponents typically have 3 HPS
- 1:16:27so you can just drop this card round one and auto kill them.
- 1:16:30Don't don't do cards like that and it is sort of expecting a a
- 1:16:34level of trust between. The game.
- 1:16:36Designers the the judge and the player.
- 1:16:39And like, fair enough, yeah. Yeah, finally.
- 1:16:46In terms of the custom card creation.
- 1:16:48I do like that the I I was I I do like that the game very
- 1:16:51specifically called out like yes, given how the card creation
- 1:16:55rules are, you can just automatically make a card that
- 1:17:00it's it's funny because when. You're playing tabletop.
- 1:17:03Games, right? This is always true for the GM.
- 1:17:06The GM can always just be like, oh you know the, the, the
- 1:17:11ceiling collapses on the player characters and everyone dies,
- 1:17:14right? AGM can technically say that at
- 1:17:15any time they want, but as the GM, you know from a social
- 1:17:18contract standpoint, you're not supposed to do that.
- 1:17:21That's a shitty thing to do because this game puts so much
- 1:17:25power in the player's hand by allowing you to design your own
- 1:17:28deck. They're basically saying, hey
- 1:17:30player, you have a power level on par with the GM.
- 1:17:34So just like the GM isn't abusing their power, don't abuse
- 1:17:38yours. Yeah, the game.
- 1:17:41It's not your phrase. The game is saying don't be a
- 1:17:44Dick. Yeah, don't be that guy 'cause
- 1:17:46we know you could like basically this game.
- 1:17:51Is very much not designed for assholes.
- 1:17:53Because assholes could ruin it very quickly.
- 1:17:59See this to be fair. This is the kind of designing
- 1:18:01for assholes I like. Where?
- 1:18:02It just says don't be an asshole.
- 1:18:04It doesn't try to like over design the cards.
- 1:18:08It's not even designing for assholes.
- 1:18:09It's designing however the fuck they want then saying fuck off
- 1:18:12if you're going to be that guy. Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:18:17But anyway. I, I I just I.
- 1:18:20I thought that little bit was especially funny because again,
- 1:18:23you know, as AGM, I'm always in that mentality.
- 1:18:26So it's kind of funny for it to see a game be like players
- 1:18:30don't, don't do it, don't do it. Yeah, you also have the
- 1:18:34responsibility in this game. Look, I'm not going to lie, a a
- 1:18:37part of me feels a little. Called out by this.
- 1:18:39Because if anyone was going to figure out the metaf to insta
- 1:18:42kill the opponent, it's probably going to me be.
- 1:18:44Now, to be fair, I'm not saying I would do that, but if it
- 1:18:48wasn't going to be someone, it probably would be me.
- 1:18:50The thing that's funny is it's really fucking easy to do in
- 1:18:53this. Game so like.
- 1:18:54Yeah, it is. It's not even that impressive.
- 1:18:57If you do it, they literally say it.
- 1:18:59They're like, yeah, you could really easily make an invocation
- 1:19:02that does more damage, that just has health.
- 1:19:04Like, yeah, you just win. Yeah, and that's not fun.
- 1:19:09And like I was saying, finally. In terms of custom card
- 1:19:11creation. The game has several illegal
- 1:19:13effects that for the sake of game balance and general flow,
- 1:19:16the game system's not. The game system tells you just
- 1:19:19straight up don't do this. A the three that they are, The
- 1:19:22four that they have are do not create effects that create new
- 1:19:27unique cards. The game essentially says that
- 1:19:30there are systems in place for this and they should be kept to
- 1:19:32unique moments. Second is do not create card
- 1:19:35effects that affect the world outside the game.
- 1:19:38The the cards themselves are not superpowers.
- 1:19:41They shouldn't be treated as superpowers.
- 1:19:43Basically I'm looking at you Bakura with your change of
- 1:19:46heart. Shadow game in Doulas Kingdom.
- 1:19:48Don't do that. The third rule is do not.
- 1:19:51Create card effects that are. Reliant on variables outside of
- 1:19:55the game, IE don't create cards that require times of the day to
- 1:19:59be played or specific actions that can be taken place outside
- 1:20:03of the game. This is primarily for balance
- 1:20:05purposes and there are playbook effects that simulate this,
- 1:20:09Admittedly to a lesser degree, but if you want that feel, there
- 1:20:12is a playbook move that you can take for it.
- 1:20:15Finally, do not create cards that connect specifically to a
- 1:20:18character's stats, such as, such as.
- 1:20:26Tying. A.
- 1:20:27Card strength I was I. Kept trying to say trying.
- 1:20:29Tying a card strength to a specific stat or forcing roles
- 1:20:33with a specific attribute. So basically saying a card
- 1:20:37cannot force. A.
- 1:20:38Player to roll with a specific stat on one of their moves.
- 1:20:44Clear. Fair.
- 1:20:44Good, good, The final card. Creation type is volatile card
- 1:20:51creation. And it is.
- 1:20:54This shit is so funny. It is wild.
- 1:20:57Yeah. This mechanic really just made
- 1:21:00me think about how Yugi was always pulling out the the the
- 1:21:03Makiyu's magic Maki. I was waiting for you to come up
- 1:21:09at some point. And how that card?
- 1:21:12Just does whatever the fuck Yugi.
- 1:21:13Says it does. The magical mist?
- 1:21:16Yeah, it's magic because it can do.
- 1:21:17Fucking anything. It's magic Mist.
- 1:21:19Because it's whatever its effect is, whatever the.
- 1:21:21Hell, Yugi wants. Yes, this dragon is fire
- 1:21:24attributed. Will my mist deactivates your
- 1:21:26fire. Oh wait, this is my enemy.
- 1:21:28My character is lightning infused.
- 1:21:30Oh, so it's going to increase its damage?
- 1:21:33My favorite. This character is using light to
- 1:21:35close to the actual effect. Do you know what the actual
- 1:21:37effect of the card is? Yeah, Yeah, we looked it up
- 1:21:39yesterday. If you have lightning, if you
- 1:21:41have a A, if you have summon Skull or a Thunder monster in
- 1:21:44your monster, destroy all of your opponent's monster, Destroy
- 1:21:48all monsters your opponent controls with defense less than
- 1:21:51or equal to the attack of that monster, and then you cannot
- 1:21:54conduct your battle phase. So, like, it's a terrible card.
- 1:21:56It's like not worth it all but. Yeah.
- 1:22:02It's kind of a funny like lol fuck you card to play I guess it
- 1:22:06it really is volatile card creation.
- 1:22:10Is. As the game describes a
- 1:22:13streamlined. Method for creating.
- 1:22:15Complex card abilities in the heat of the moment, essentially
- 1:22:20when the player when. A player uses.
- 1:22:22The Draw a perfect card move the game suggests that rather than
- 1:22:26go through the previously described long, arduous process
- 1:22:29for creating a custom card, you instead describe to the judge
- 1:22:35the effect. That you want the card.
- 1:22:37To have as well as some basic information, it's type strength
- 1:22:41and general effect parameters, and with the judge's input you
- 1:22:45hash out the finer details. Yeah, the books, basically.
- 1:22:49Basically. You.
- 1:22:50You pull a card out of your ass to do exactly the effect you
- 1:22:53want, and the effect can be kind of bullshit when you pull it out
- 1:22:56of your ass and then after you're done with the session,
- 1:22:59you go back and make it an actually balanced card.
- 1:23:02Yes, that that is the really important part.
- 1:23:05The card is allowed to be pretty much as OP as you want it to be
- 1:23:09for the dual that you first pull it out in, but upon completion
- 1:23:14the card needs. To be heavily revised.
- 1:23:16To fit within the effect point system.
- 1:23:19I do. I do love that they literally
- 1:23:22put in an ass pole mechanic because it is because that
- 1:23:24really is the truest like mechanic you could possibly have
- 1:23:28for a fucking TCG tabletop game. Like it don't get more real than
- 1:23:32that. It it it's true.
- 1:23:34It really is some information that I I didn't put in my notes,
- 1:23:38but they do talk about if you have a situation where your
- 1:23:41volatile card doesn't really fit into the effect points system,
- 1:23:49the game offers you a couple options.
- 1:23:51You can either scrap the card and just design a new.
- 1:23:57Card and name it the same thing. If you really can't get it to
- 1:24:00work. Or you could just not have the
- 1:24:05card in your deck and then. Describe in the.
- 1:24:07Narrative What happened to it? Maybe you get the Weevil
- 1:24:10Underwood thrown into the water maneuver.
- 1:24:13So you know the the the book basically says.
- 1:24:15Try to. Balance it.
- 1:24:18But it recognizes that sometimes maybe that's just not going.
- 1:24:20To happen and. There are other options it which
- 1:24:22again could involve replacing the card entirely and just
- 1:24:25having to do something completely different or just
- 1:24:28saying for the sake of the game it's removed yeah and that was
- 1:24:36the card creation system that was 4 pages of notes and let's.
- 1:24:43See, we faffed for 20 minutes. So that was an hour that.
- 1:24:46Was a full hour of our two hour episode allotted to that system?
- 1:24:51Hell. Yeah, dude, I love that, I do
- 1:24:56think. I do 4.
- 1:24:58I think it is kind of funny. It seems like the card creation
- 1:25:00system really assumes that, like downtime between sessions, your
- 1:25:05characters are just getting rid of cards, selling cards, buying
- 1:25:09new cards. Adjusting their debt like.
- 1:25:11You're just constantly, you're going to be like move removing
- 1:25:14and changing your cards in your deck kind of a lot, especially
- 1:25:19because you have the whole. What is it draw?
- 1:25:21The perfect card move where you asshole whatever the fuck you
- 1:25:24need you like. I mean it, it does talk.
- 1:25:28About that like. You might ask, pull a card you
- 1:25:31need and then not want it later. So you're just like, oh, what'd
- 1:25:34you do with that card you played?
- 1:25:35I just got rid of it. You know, literally it.
- 1:25:38It talks about that in the more section.
- 1:25:39Where like. There are card like card shops
- 1:25:43all over Shuffle City and like, it's not, I mean, uncommon for
- 1:25:46your players to be like, oh, I'm going to do some trades real
- 1:25:47quick. I mean, yeah, it it, it makes
- 1:25:51sense. In the context, but it's still.
- 1:25:52Funny to think about. On to chapter 4, which is
- 1:25:57character creation. As you can assume, it describes
- 1:26:02the the process in which the PCs can create their characters you
- 1:26:05know well as giving you the the player information about what
- 1:26:10your playbook is like and allowing you to pick some of the
- 1:26:12options involved. Generally speaking, it's pretty
- 1:26:16by the numbers as far as a PBTA playbook is concerned, but there
- 1:26:21are a number of fun additions as well.
- 1:26:25For example, and I don't, I'm sure other Pbta games have done
- 1:26:29this. And I I I maybe Apocalypse World
- 1:26:31did this, I don't exactly remember.
- 1:26:33But each playbook comes with a section dedicated to how that
- 1:26:37specific playbook should be handled within the narrative in
- 1:26:40the game, both for the PCs and for the judge.
- 1:26:44It gives tips. World does not do that.
- 1:26:48I said no, Apocalypse World does not do that.
- 1:26:51It gives tips on how players. Should generally.
- 1:26:53Leverage their attributes and how to allow the themes of that
- 1:26:58playbook to bypass their natural habits as players for the sake
- 1:27:02of the character and the narrative at large.
- 1:27:04As far as the judges are concerned, it provides the.
- 1:27:07Opposite to. This it gives judges information
- 1:27:10about not only how to handle a particular playbook, but also
- 1:27:13how to handle playbook specific moves and how they shift the
- 1:27:16story as a whole. There is a section a bit in the
- 1:27:20section after this that talks about how to maintain your party
- 1:27:26of playbooks in short term campaigns.
- 1:27:29It's pretty much just a little bit more information within this
- 1:27:32scope, you know, like some, some playbooks.
- 1:27:36Might. Not duel in a short campaign.
- 1:27:38That's not really their purpose. They could have a deck, it could
- 1:27:40happen, but it's not necessarily a fact that it should happen or
- 1:27:43that it will happen. Stuff like that as an addition.
- 1:27:48Each playbook comes with a pre made.
- 1:27:49Deck and a gimmick for players who just want to jump into the
- 1:27:52action and each has a unique archetype has a unique gimmick
- 1:27:55and frankly it's crazy how much fun they managed to make each
- 1:28:00deck seem like truly that's impressive yeah at the start of
- 1:28:05the. Game during character creation.
- 1:28:07When you pick your playbook. Obviously, like other Pbta
- 1:28:10games, you get to increase one of your stats by 1.
- 1:28:12You give them an identity and pronouns.
- 1:28:14Give them a look to come in Pbta fair.
- 1:28:17After that you get to create your deck archetype as well.
- 1:28:20As. The naming convention for their
- 1:28:22gimmick and the unique cards. This all happens during
- 1:28:24character creation. There are a number of gimmicks
- 1:28:27listed that you can choose. From.
- 1:28:29So strong thing by weak thing, strong thing but weak thing,
- 1:28:33wrong thing with weak thing, re acquirement to strong thing,
- 1:28:37weak thing helped by strong thing, strategy using strong
- 1:28:41thing or weak thing and simple effect or keyword.
- 1:28:45I know that doesn't make sense right now, but it will describe
- 1:28:48it when we get to the playbooks. But I figured it is worth
- 1:28:51mentioning as far as they go. You have.
- 1:28:57What is it 10? Playbooks to.
- 1:28:58Choose from in the base rule book and I think an additional 7
- 1:29:02or 8. No like 5 or I think there's
- 1:29:06like 6. In the.
- 1:29:07The the booster pack add on book that they created a little while
- 1:29:11back. Oh, I didn't see that.
- 1:29:13But yeah, there's 10 in the base game.
- 1:29:15Yeah, the playbooks. Are as described.
- 1:29:20The Resolved. The Prodigy The.
- 1:29:22Glowing. The rogue, the ally, the spirit,
- 1:29:27the medium, the destined, the idealist, and the turncoat.
- 1:29:32And we're going to go through and just give some quick points
- 1:29:35on each of those. Anything you want to say before
- 1:29:42we get into the weeks? No, I mean, there's not much.
- 1:29:46I don't. Think there's much to say on
- 1:29:48character? Creation.
- 1:29:48It works pretty much like any other Powered by the Apocalypse
- 1:29:52character creation that you're used to, so there's nothing
- 1:29:56there's nothing crazy there. Fair enough.
- 1:29:58Other than. Obviously I mean other.
- 1:30:00Than the fact that they give you the.
- 1:30:02Sample decks, obviously, which could be, you know, quite
- 1:30:07useful. And I guess the tension
- 1:30:08question, well, those aren't really character creation
- 1:30:10though. But yeah, like the sample decks
- 1:30:14are helpful. And then the how to role play
- 1:30:18and how to run the various playbooks is kind of
- 1:30:22interesting. Additional information.
- 1:30:26I feel like that, like it's not a.
- 1:30:27Specific mechanic per SE. But yeah, no, but I feel like
- 1:30:31when it comes to power by the apocalypse games like right in
- 1:30:33in D&D, they this I don't think works as much because your class
- 1:30:37is sort of irrelevant to the like or you know.
- 1:30:41In the game's eyes, your class. Is kind of irrelevant to the
- 1:30:44idea of your character, right? Like you could be a rogue in
- 1:30:47terms of your stats, but you could be literally anything
- 1:30:51else, you know what I mean? The game doesn't really care
- 1:30:52about that. But as far as playbooks go,
- 1:30:55because they're so. Intrinsically linked.
- 1:30:57To the character and how you play the character.
- 1:30:59I feel like that that should almost be a gold standard for
- 1:31:03game designers. You know, I mean not sort of if
- 1:31:11we're talk, I mean if you're talking about new.
- 1:31:16Age. More recent Powered by the
- 1:31:19Apocalypse games, that's kind of true, where the playbooks are
- 1:31:24stereotypical archetypes. But if you're talking about.
- 1:31:28Older Powered by the Apocalypse games, I don't think that's the
- 1:31:31case so much. You don't.
- 1:31:34I mean like if you think about Moji.
- 1:31:35Powered by the Apocalypse if you're.
- 1:31:36Playing the driver right, like like the driver is inspired by
- 1:31:42Mad Max, obviously, but it is not like it is not so
- 1:31:46intrinsically core based on Mad Max that you can't play anything
- 1:31:50else within it. You can play lots of different
- 1:31:52kinds of drivers. There's a lot of wiggle room
- 1:31:55there. But if you're playing something
- 1:31:57like Avatar where you have your playbook is like the, the Ouch,
- 1:32:02Jeez, what the fuck's it called? There's a playbook that's like
- 1:32:07literally supposed to be ANG like without being the avatar
- 1:32:10part. But like other than that is
- 1:32:12clearly just ANG as as a playbook.
- 1:32:14And yeah, for those for that game called the Idealist, it
- 1:32:20might be like for that game. Yeah, it it it makes sense, but
- 1:32:30it doesn't. Like.
- 1:32:34It's like half. Half yes, half no kind of thing
- 1:32:37is. Kind of where I'm.
- 1:32:37Getting it like. If you're making.
- 1:32:42Archetypes based on. If you're making archetypes
- 1:32:45based on characters with the intention of invoking the
- 1:32:51character straight up. Then.
- 1:32:54Yes, but in terms of if. You're taking.
- 1:33:00Inspiration from a character, but not necessarily saying you
- 1:33:03have to play this character. Like this game is pretty clearly
- 1:33:08trying to be like yes, each playbook maps to a character.
- 1:33:12Like, really closely, that is. Not necessarily the case in
- 1:33:20original Apocalypse world. So I I.
- 1:33:22Kind of disagree on that because like when you use the the driver
- 1:33:25archetype, as we mentioned, right, Yes, you can play a bunch
- 1:33:28of different kind of drivers, but ultimately you are a
- 1:33:31character who is the like the core tenet of their personality
- 1:33:37is the fact that they have a car in the apocalypse, they have a
- 1:33:40special car. So giving information to the
- 1:33:43players on how you should treat your car, you know, assuming
- 1:33:47you're playing the game expects you, how the game expects you to
- 1:33:49play. And for the the, you know, the
- 1:33:53MC on how they should treat that car, I feel like that that's not
- 1:33:58outside. Their own possibility.
- 1:33:59Something with like the gun lugger, right?
- 1:34:00Like you get your cool special gun.
- 1:34:02It's not necessarily, Well, the special guns aren't, they're a
- 1:34:08little more. Generic.
- 1:34:09Than that they're not that special, but it's not
- 1:34:11necessarily outside of their own possibility.
- 1:34:13I don't think it's particularly needed.
- 1:34:16I don't think it's mandatory. Fair enough.
- 1:34:21I I. Think it should be gold standard
- 1:34:22but I I. You know if you disagree.
- 1:34:23That's fine. I I I for this.
- 1:34:27Game and I think it makes a little more sense.
- 1:34:31Because again. This this.
- 1:34:34Game is trying to invoke a niche on a niche on a niche, so giving
- 1:34:39some guidance on how to make the niche.
- 1:34:41Work I get a little. Bit more.
- 1:34:46But I disagree. Fair enough, but I definitely
- 1:34:48know I'm not looking for it. In every game, that's for sure.
- 1:34:52I would like it and and at least in Pbta.
- 1:34:54Games. I would like it.
- 1:34:55That being said, we're going to start off with the first
- 1:34:59playbook, the resolved. The resolved is your you know,
- 1:35:02your Jaden, your Yuma, your happy go lucky headstrong
- 1:35:06actually, for your for the shown MP resolves your it's Naruto.
- 1:35:09Yeah, it's Naruto. It's the the headstrong, brash,
- 1:35:13a little clumsy, but like good-natured person.
- 1:35:15Ash Ketchum is another one. I mean Yugi no Yugi.
- 1:35:22Yugi's too timid. For that, like actual Yugi's too
- 1:35:25timid for that. And a 10 is definitely just the
- 1:35:27destined. I would say Yugi's more the
- 1:35:29destined than this. I thought the destined was just
- 1:35:31supposed to be Merrick. No, no, it's actually not.
- 1:35:35The destined is like you are bound for a greater purpose.
- 1:35:38No, the the there is one in the the the booster pack that's
- 1:35:44closer. To Merrick.
- 1:35:45Because it's like you have an evil spirit specifically, but
- 1:35:49isn't Merrick kind of? Wasn't that kind?
- 1:35:52Of part of Merrick's thing like he was supposed to be ground
- 1:35:54bound for a greater purpose but he like fucked it up.
- 1:35:57Wasn't that. No he literate Merrick just has
- 1:36:00schizophrenia. Like straight up he just has
- 1:36:02multiple personality disorder. Fair enough.
- 1:36:09That being said. The options you get for things
- 1:36:12like your hair, I'm not going to go into this.
- 1:36:13All of them but like. Just to give you a thought, for
- 1:36:15those of you who might not be really repowered by the
- 1:36:17Apocalypse games, you get to choose your look.
- 1:36:19Or let me start with the stats. I think that's sport.
- 1:36:22Your stats are Passion 2 skill minus.
- 1:36:25One friendship, one we. Described those in the previous
- 1:36:27episode. As far as your look goes, the.
- 1:36:30Resolves. Air can be scruffy long haircut
- 1:36:35by by mum like which I think kind of clues into who made the
- 1:36:38the people who made this. Their clothes can be a school
- 1:36:42uniform, well padded or a graphic tee.
- 1:36:44Their game tool, which is to say they're dual disc can be second
- 1:36:46hand, shoddy or common. The archetype is, their
- 1:36:54abilities are. Are all about having like.
- 1:36:56Cards that you care truly about or having like an unbreakable
- 1:37:00will, Having a mentor that you look up to, being able to to
- 1:37:05leverage your straight up determination to win.
- 1:37:09You know, it's a pull you a dub. It's it's pretty cool.
- 1:37:13They do have a funny move called the trainer's eyes meet, which I
- 1:37:17just love the idea. It's it's literally the the shot
- 1:37:19in something like Yu-gi-oh or Shonen where it's just a a slash
- 1:37:22cut of the two opposing forces, like staring at each other
- 1:37:26intently. I think it's kind of fun.
- 1:37:30They give you some. Information on on.
- 1:37:32Role-playing the resolve it basically talks about how when
- 1:37:37you. Are playing the result.
- 1:37:39As a playbook, you should always strive for a goal that's just
- 1:37:42out of reach, especially at the start of your venture, right?
- 1:37:45You, you want the I want to be the very best that like no one
- 1:37:48ever was. But you don't necessarily know
- 1:37:51exactly how to do that and you should lean into it.
- 1:37:55Obviously your your judge should make that possible for you at
- 1:38:00some point, but it's OK to be clueless on it at the start and
- 1:38:05it's OK to play into your own well.
- 1:38:12Meaning, but ultimately. Like reckless naivete.
- 1:38:15That's why you get a + 2 in things like passion.
- 1:38:17Which is to say, you're good at getting into trouble, but you're
- 1:38:20also good at headstrong in your way out of trouble.
- 1:38:23You're -1 to skill means that sometimes.
- 1:38:25You come off as. Incompetent.
- 1:38:26You know, the anime cutaway character falling on his face
- 1:38:30randomly in front of the cool badass character.
- 1:38:35It recommends. That the the.
- 1:38:37Character traits that you. Should embody are being
- 1:38:39knuckleheaded and starstruck, headstrong, naive and impulsive.
- 1:38:44Feel free to hold on to childish ideals no experienced player
- 1:38:47would, and prove everybody wrong by kicking their asses.
- 1:38:51The example deck that it gives you is the.
- 1:38:53Battleblock Battalion. The history of the deck is this
- 1:38:58deck is important to me because I made it myself.
- 1:39:00It's a little mishmash as a result.
- 1:39:02My ace is important because it reminds me of when I was a kid.
- 1:39:05The gimmick is smaller warriors that team up.
- 1:39:08So that is that's what we were talking about before with the
- 1:39:12strong thing, but weak thing, I guess.
- 1:39:14In this instance. It would be weak thing helped by
- 1:39:16strong thing. Recommended staples.
- 1:39:20Summon Army. And fireball so.
- 1:39:21It's actually giving you recommendations to on how to
- 1:39:24build this deck and your starting deck are the
- 1:39:27Battleblock Battalion, Star Warrior, Toy Box, Support,
- 1:39:31Copter, and Build instruction. Each of them have some unique
- 1:39:34effects. Star Warrior is an ace.
- 1:39:36It has Teamwork 1, Piercer 1, and follow up.
- 1:39:39And yeah, it's actually probably one of my favorite gimmicks for
- 1:39:42the starter decks. On the judge's.
- 1:39:47End when you're running the. Resolve it tells.
- 1:39:50You, you know, don't be afraid to in a critical moment, shoot
- 1:39:57the resolve down on the precipice of winning.
- 1:39:59This is, you know, this is Ash losing the input gym or the the
- 1:40:04regional championship at the like input of every every loss
- 1:40:08Ash has had. Yeah, every L he's ever taken,
- 1:40:12of which there are have Yeah. Have the NPCS underestimate the
- 1:40:16resolved and, you know, have their overconfidence lead to
- 1:40:19their downfall. This kind of keys into what the
- 1:40:22book talked about earlier where it says, you know, NPCS.
- 1:40:25Should be willing to win but ultimately be beatable.
- 1:40:30Have authority figures. Call out the.
- 1:40:32Potential of the resolves the like.
- 1:40:34They could be unstoppable if they just, you know, lock the
- 1:40:36fuck in and teach things to the resolve that.
- 1:40:42That conflict. With their intrinsic ideal
- 1:40:47optimism. I like that a lot.
- 1:40:50It it even gives you some. Tips.
- 1:40:52And this goes for every. Other Playbook for how to
- 1:40:54specifically play with the playbook specific moves.
- 1:40:57So talking about their mentor, their headstrong luck and their
- 1:41:01pet cards. We're not going to get into all
- 1:41:03of them because that's a lot of reading, but I like the result.
- 1:41:06It's actually one of the few times where I like the the
- 1:41:08default. The what?
- 1:41:12Kind. Of the default.
- 1:41:13Yeah, yeah, I really like the. Default in this one.
- 1:41:17After this, we have me and Josh's favorite playbook, The
- 1:41:20Prodigy, The Seto Kaiba of the game.
- 1:41:25You. You are the rich kid.
- 1:41:27You're. The too.
- 1:41:28Cool for the friend group, you're kind of mean your your
- 1:41:32stats reflect this in your one passion 2 skill and -1
- 1:41:37friendship, aren't you literally yeah.
- 1:41:39Aren't you literally described as being like a Dick?
- 1:41:41Yeah, you are kind of a Dick to people.
- 1:41:43Yeah, it's it's pretty funny. Your struggles kind of reflect
- 1:41:48your cool kid rich school demeanor in that you.
- 1:41:52Have an enterprise. That you own to control, but
- 1:41:54like there are constantly competitors trying to undermine
- 1:41:57you or you have like family members who are trying to
- 1:42:00subvert you. It's you get some fun stuff
- 1:42:05their playbook. Abilities are all.
- 1:42:09They all pertain to just how cool you are.
- 1:42:12A lot of your abilities are just getting plus ones to any roles
- 1:42:18involving your ace. You get an ability, my favorite
- 1:42:21ability in the game called screw the rules.
- 1:42:23I have money basically. That's literally the name by.
- 1:42:28The way Isaiah I know it's, it is literally.
- 1:42:30Called screw the rules, I have money.
- 1:42:33It basically makes it so that editorializing prep time, it
- 1:42:38assumes that you have money and can buy something that you need.
- 1:42:41And it's pretty much anything that you might need, including
- 1:42:44like a new card or, or, you know, blue eyes, white jet.
- 1:42:49Yeah. Or the blue eyes, white jet.
- 1:42:50Exactly. Yeah.
- 1:42:51You just have to roll a skill check with your skill and on a
- 1:42:567UP you get what you want. So it's not even the like 7 to
- 1:42:59910 plus. It's just on a 7UP, you get
- 1:43:01exactly what you want. Yeah, there's also a fun ability
- 1:43:06they have called My Second Ace, which allows you to play a
- 1:43:09duplicate of your ace card doing the blue eyes thing.
- 1:43:13And a little fun, a little fun reference to my who is also, I
- 1:43:18guess, the prodigy in Yu-gi-oh because you have a ability
- 1:43:21called Elegant Egotist, which is the name of one of my's
- 1:43:25signature spell cards. As far as the role-playing the
- 1:43:34prodigy, just lean into being. You are the quintessential.
- 1:43:40Bully. Rival, you are the the certified
- 1:43:43generational hater. You should be a little rude, a
- 1:43:47little abrasive, and more importantly, you need to be
- 1:43:51aware that you are just better than everyone.
- 1:43:55Are you are you need to. Be aware that you think.
- 1:43:57That you are just better than everyone else and that can
- 1:44:01involve you hurting the other the other characters, right?
- 1:44:07You. Have a situation where a player
- 1:44:09is looking to confide in you, but you are just, you can't deal
- 1:44:13with this right now, you're just too cool.
- 1:44:15Stuff like that. That that one line Kaiba says
- 1:44:18where I ruin people's lives everyday.
- 1:44:21I'm aceo. Just embody that energy.
- 1:44:24Exactly. Yes, exactly your general.
- 1:44:28Skill rundown is that. You know you're starting, +2 to
- 1:44:31skill means that you're good at pretty much anything you try
- 1:44:36that involves expertise and knowledge, but your -1 to
- 1:44:38friendship means that you come off as kind of a Dick.
- 1:44:41Again, don't be afraid to lean into this.
- 1:44:44Being bad with people means your character has an opportunity to
- 1:44:46grow and learn. That's a good thing.
- 1:44:49The example deck that the Prodigy gives you is a personal
- 1:44:54favorite, the Speakers of the Chain Titan.
- 1:44:57We're not going to go super deep into the lore of the game, but
- 1:45:01basically this mofo has Obelisk the Tormentor.
- 1:45:06He just has a big chungus monster in the form of
- 1:45:09Prometheus the Chain Titan. It does, it's his ace card.
- 1:45:13It's a strong warrior that comes with overwhelm.
- 1:45:17At the beginning of your turn you lose one health, and when
- 1:45:20Prometheus is specifically destroyed it just gets returned
- 1:45:24to your hand so it cannot go to the graveyard.
- 1:45:29The deck gimmick. Is basically built.
- 1:45:30Around. Summoning.
- 1:45:32Prometheus and then or or sorry, summoning the speakers which are
- 1:45:37normal monsters that have buffs for Prometheus and then dropping
- 1:45:41Prometheus on the field and keeping him there.
- 1:45:46For example, the true name speaker, when you summon it and
- 1:45:50Prometheus is on the field, you gain 3 life to supplement having
- 1:45:54the health drain from having Prometheus out.
- 1:45:57So that's really cool. I like this archetype a lot.
- 1:45:59I like this character a lot. As far as like running the the
- 1:46:05Prodigy the game talks about, you know, throwing random
- 1:46:09goobers at the prodigy and let them be disposed of easily.
- 1:46:12You know, let the fact that they're an asshole come back to
- 1:46:16bite them later on. Create challenges that can be
- 1:46:21solved by. Their skill.
- 1:46:22And their money. And don't be afraid to.
- 1:46:29Create kinks. In their armor so that when they
- 1:46:33have their amazing third act breakdown in front of the
- 1:46:37protagonist that they have something to to play with and
- 1:46:41that something that lets them like grow as a person it also
- 1:46:47like I. Said gives you some information.
- 1:46:48About the about how to run their playbook abilities, so it gives
- 1:46:53you some information about if they want subordinates how to
- 1:46:55run that the screw the rules, I have money.
- 1:47:00I love this description. This ability can solve a lot of
- 1:47:03problems for players when they need something specific, but it
- 1:47:06can also create interesting goals for the prodigy when they
- 1:47:09roll low. If the source of the prodigy's
- 1:47:12extreme wealth has been impeded or jeopardized, you should make
- 1:47:15sure to give the prodigy an actionable way to get it back
- 1:47:18that aligns with the goals the players already have.
- 1:47:21Some examples of ways their wealth could be in question
- 1:47:23include their company being bought out, Kaiba.
- 1:47:26Their parents have disowned them, Kaiba.
- 1:47:29They need to hide their identity.
- 1:47:31Actually, not Kaiba. Not Kaiba.
- 1:47:33In that case, not Kaiba specifically, they have some
- 1:47:36stuff for their second ace. Let's the player use their ace
- 1:47:40card a second time in combat automatically.
- 1:47:42You can treat it as representing another version of the ace,
- 1:47:44essentially being a copy, giving them more than one.
- 1:47:48I think that's interesting. You can't field 2.
- 1:47:50Versions of the ACE rules is. Written it just lets the ace
- 1:47:52attack twice, but it presumes that you you know, it's a little
- 1:47:57weird because you get as it it's.
- 1:47:58Treated in the narrative. Like a second version, but I
- 1:48:01guess if the card is destroyed they both go a little unclear.
- 1:48:09Oh no. Oh, no, yeah, no, it does.
- 1:48:11So nevermind, I'm wrong on this. It says once per card game you
- 1:48:14have when you have a card with the ace tag on the field or
- 1:48:17you've played a card with ace this turn, you can discard a
- 1:48:20card from your hand to play an additional copy of the ace.
- 1:48:23So you do literally just get to OK, nevermind.
- 1:48:26Yeah, well, it's weird because the running the Prodigy just.
- 1:48:30Says it lets them use. Their ace card a second time in
- 1:48:33combat. But no that's not true.
- 1:48:34You literally just get 2 aces. You have two monsters on the
- 1:48:37field. I mean that is also using their
- 1:48:41card twice. Yes, but.
- 1:48:44Like for the sake of. Card destruction.
- 1:48:46It's not. It's treated.
- 1:48:47Like a second card. I guess getting a little in the
- 1:48:55weeds on that one. What is a TCG if?
- 1:48:59Not something that you have to get into on.
- 1:49:01Sure. After the Prodigy, we have the
- 1:49:07glowing. The the glowing is, you're the.
- 1:49:12Best friend. You're the character that
- 1:49:15everyone gets drawn to. I guess this is more the Jayden
- 1:49:19be given that like he just pulls the homies in.
- 1:49:22Like people who otherwise hated each other are all chilling now.
- 1:49:26You have sort of a gravitational charisma about you, and as such
- 1:49:32your character finds a lot of their purpose in helping others.
- 1:49:39To reflect this, you have a -1 in passion.
- 1:49:41A. Plus one in.
- 1:49:41Skill and a + 2 to friendship. Your struggles include, you
- 1:49:48know, having someone again, because you're sort of sort of
- 1:49:52like personality, someone following you, you might not
- 1:49:56know who they are. You got a bit of a stalker.
- 1:49:59Someone you know, someone you care about has joined the wrong
- 1:50:01crowd. How are you trying to help them
- 1:50:03get out of it? Or because of your popularity,
- 1:50:08some people. Are disrespecting.
- 1:50:09And bullying towards you and you know the things that could come
- 1:50:13about with that the abilities that the.
- 1:50:17Gifted give you are your celebrated.
- 1:50:19Expertise things that that essentially allows you to
- 1:50:24leverage your character's sort of intrinsic skill in something
- 1:50:27discussed outside of combat or outside of game.
- 1:50:31So things like fashion, singing, streaming, acting, magic tricks,
- 1:50:34robotics, essentially just giving you a tertiary skill that
- 1:50:37you can call on and you can treat anything pertaining to
- 1:50:41that skill base as a 10. When you roll on it you get a
- 1:50:46really cool ability I like called gift card which.
- 1:50:48Just lets. You give a player one of your
- 1:50:50unique cards for a duel. I think that's super fun and a
- 1:50:53lot of their other stuff is around like my friends are my
- 1:50:57power basically that that on that Taya shit.
- 1:51:02A little bit, yeah, she is also. A little Taya coded I I I felt
- 1:51:07like this playbook was Taya coded I Yeah, I suppose I just
- 1:51:11did. Taya is like pretty.
- 1:51:13Terrible at dueling. Taya sucks ass.
- 1:51:15Yeah, yeah she do. She do not Great role-playing
- 1:51:22the glowing the game. Says that you should really
- 1:51:24lean. Into your charisma, lean into
- 1:51:26the connections you have with people, the way that you
- 1:51:30naturally sort of draw friends and enemies towards you for one
- 1:51:34reason or another, you're you're going to be playing.
- 1:51:39The kind of character who. If the villain needs help, even
- 1:51:44if it seems ridiculous, your. Character would would.
- 1:51:47Help the villain in a time of need.
- 1:51:49So you're also a little ang coded, but your empathy can bite
- 1:51:57you in the ass and you know. Based on what?
- 1:52:00It says for the GM running the glowing that is going to happen.
- 1:52:04Your convictions and what you believe in will be tested
- 1:52:07constantly, and whether or not your character.
- 1:52:11Holds true to those. Is to be seen, but I would be
- 1:52:14interested. The example deck you get is the
- 1:52:18Spirit Samurai. Deck.
- 1:52:19I love this deck, it's so cool. I want to say this about a lot
- 1:52:23of them. It's gimmick revolves.
- 1:52:27Around. Winning clashes so it's it's ace
- 1:52:33character basically can. Force.
- 1:52:35Clashes with. Characters, even if it would
- 1:52:36otherwise have automatically win them.
- 1:52:39And when you do win them, you get to draw a card.
- 1:52:42You also get other care like other cards that cannot attack.
- 1:52:47Oh my God, they cannot attack the opponent directly and do all
- 1:52:52of their damage through clashes. It is pretty sick.
- 1:52:56I like this one a lot as far as running it goes, like I said you
- 1:53:00want to. Test your players.
- 1:53:01Convictions you want to challenge their beliefs and give
- 1:53:06them reasons to doubt, but. Also give them.
- 1:53:09Times for which their friends can reinvigorate them and show
- 1:53:13them that their way is the right way.
- 1:53:16That's fun. After the glowing.
- 1:53:19You have the rogue. I don't necessarily know who
- 1:53:23this is supposed to be. I don't know, but I like the
- 1:53:26vibe of the rogue. I do like the vibe for the rogue
- 1:53:29a lot. You're the character who's
- 1:53:32always got a backup. Oh no, you know what?
- 1:53:34This could be Bastion from GX like Mr. I have 6 decks and.
- 1:53:39I can always figure out the. Solution because I'm just that 5
- 1:53:41head the guy with. The elemental decks.
- 1:53:50Maybe. Not really sure.
- 1:53:54Who it's supposed to be? Well, so at first I thought it
- 1:53:57was. My but then my the the the
- 1:54:00prodigy has my one of my things as one of its abilities.
- 1:54:03So I was like, I wonder if this isn't my instead.
- 1:54:06I'm not not clear, that being said.
- 1:54:10The passion stats are. Zero or right?
- 1:54:13The rogue stats are 0 in passion, 2IN skill and a zero in
- 1:54:17friendship their abilities. Are about just.
- 1:54:23Having backup plans within backup plans trick up your
- 1:54:27sleeve essentially allows you to gain information on the enemy's
- 1:54:30gimmick and their cards. Independent contractor allows.
- 1:54:35You to ask. The Judge 2 questions about any
- 1:54:37particular situation. Counter spell variant.
- 1:54:41I do like that one too. Counterspell allows you to use a
- 1:54:47second or gain a second use rather of the counter your
- 1:54:51opponent's play in a turn. And you have thieves tools,
- 1:54:54which in the narrative allows you to just kind of do thieves
- 1:54:58tools things. You just get to be a rogue
- 1:55:01running the rogue. You are aloof, you are adverse
- 1:55:06to connection, and first and foremost, your mission typically
- 1:55:10is the the most important thing on your mind.
- 1:55:13You're not here for friendship. It explains this by giving.
- 1:55:18You a + 2 to your. Skill and giving.
- 1:55:20You not a whole lot in anything else the. 00.
- 1:55:25In passion, friendship means that you are targeted.
- 1:55:29You've got one solid means to get shit done, and this
- 1:55:33friendship, this connection shit is for the birds running.
- 1:55:39The Rogue. The GM.
- 1:55:41Or the judge should play into this.
- 1:55:43Give the rogue something that they care for that's not the
- 1:55:46mission and force them to choose between it.
- 1:55:49Have the villains pull out tricks that the rogue can
- 1:55:52counter with their abilities. Give them things that can
- 1:55:57challenge them. By.
- 1:55:59Making it so that in, you know, one critical instance, their
- 1:56:03backup plan fails the example deck they give you.
- 1:56:07Is the ghost in the machine? The gimmick is controlled the
- 1:56:11game by setting traps and disrupting opponents game plan.
- 1:56:14This one, hilariously, actually has a spirit.
- 1:56:16Samurai card. I wonder why.
- 1:56:20And most of its other cards can't be targeted or fall or or
- 1:56:28force adverse effects on the enemy, for example.
- 1:56:31When an. Opponent declares an attack.
- 1:56:32You can sacrifice this card to counter the attack.
- 1:56:34If you do, they can't attack this turn, so you're just
- 1:56:38cutting off the opponent's entire.
- 1:56:39Combat Phase. After that you got.
- 1:56:43The Ally. I like this one a lot.
- 1:56:46Actually, have you seen the sample deck for the ally?
- 1:56:49I don't think I looked at the allies, just grandpa.
- 1:56:51Right, like. Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:56:56But no I. Didn't look at the sample deck.
- 1:56:57I don't think or no. The ally is more specifically
- 1:57:01the the who's the guy from GX that made who who works for
- 1:57:03Pegasus the artist kid? I don't remember.
- 1:57:10God damn it, I can't remember. It's fine.
- 1:57:13I don't know. He gave.
- 1:57:15Me big, he gave me big. Grandpa energy he has.
- 1:57:18He has a little bit of that too. To be fair, the Ally is one of
- 1:57:23those. Characters who?
- 1:57:25You can expect probably won't be dueling that much.
- 1:57:29In fact, they're the only character who has a specific
- 1:57:32move that says they have a career path outside of dueling,
- 1:57:36and your your playing of that character should strike a
- 1:57:40healthy. Balance.
- 1:57:40Between, you know, being a sick duelist in you deal and just
- 1:57:44being a normal move specifically calls out having a card shop and
- 1:57:49that's yeah, fair enough, fair enough.
- 1:57:50And they don't duel as much, yeah.
- 1:57:52It's fucking grandpa. Their skill layout is 0 in
- 1:57:57passion. They have a binder.
- 1:58:00Yes, they do have a card binder and two in friendship.
- 1:58:06Their struggles are someone. Wants to shut.
- 1:58:08Down something that matters to you.
- 1:58:09Usually your card shop. A friend of yours disappeared
- 1:58:12under strange circumstances. Why and how?
- 1:58:15And you swore off something important in your past.
- 1:58:17What was it and why their abilities like we?
- 1:58:22Said focus around the fact that. You are not just a full time
- 1:58:25duelist. You have a job, you have a hobby
- 1:58:28or you know, a business. What a loser.
- 1:58:31You have an actual life. Yeah you have it, says an
- 1:58:35important person. Your partners, siblings, your
- 1:58:37protege, your Co worker. One of your skills is your.
- 1:58:41Dark. Steel Citadel.
- 1:58:43It's your your card shop or a library, and it can be like on
- 1:58:47wheels or it's the most popular card shop in town or you own it
- 1:58:51or something. That's such a dramatic name.
- 1:58:53Dark Steel Citadel. Dark Steel Citadel.
- 1:58:56I love it. I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:58:57I do. I kind of want to play this
- 1:58:59playbook, though. I do too.
- 1:59:01The deck is really fun. One of my other favorites is the
- 1:59:04Yeah, I have a card shop. Yeah, the the card binder skill
- 1:59:08is pretty fun. You can offer someone to trade
- 1:59:11them a unique card, and when you do, you note their name in a
- 1:59:14special slot given. And pretty much you can let
- 1:59:19other players use your card gimmick instead of their own
- 1:59:22when making cards. So if they make a card with in
- 1:59:26the you know, how does it align with a gimmick phase?
- 1:59:28You get to have an extra gimmick to rely on, giving you in
- 1:59:31theory, an extra breadth of cards.
- 1:59:36Let's. See is.
- 1:59:37There any other one that I. Really like.
- 1:59:42Oh yeah, the. Friend in distress.
- 1:59:44You can just show. Up when your friends need you,
- 1:59:46even if you like were in was good.
- 1:59:50I mean that's pretty classic. That's been in there since
- 1:59:52apocalypse world's first edition.
- 1:59:54The I think the savvy head had that ability where they could.
- 1:59:58Just show up in any. Situation.
- 2:00:01I kind of like the idea of just renaming that the what's.
- 2:00:03Popping jambles. What's good?
- 2:00:06Yeah, because you're like, hey, what's happened?
- 2:00:11It's fun. As.
- 2:00:12We said while while you're role-playing.
- 2:00:14The ally your. Your story should be focused on,
- 2:00:18hilariously enough, not the children's card game.
- 2:00:22Your the the crux of your character is balancing your
- 2:00:25personal life with this ubiquitous thing that everyone
- 2:00:29else is doing, and due to that, you're probably not going to be
- 2:00:32dueling as much as everybody else.
- 2:00:35You are effectively the the quintessential support character
- 2:00:39of the game. You can duel.
- 2:00:41It's expected that you will duel.
- 2:00:43But you are primarily. Going to be using your abilities
- 2:00:45to make things easier for your allies.
- 2:00:50The example deck you have is pen and paper.
- 2:00:52Adventures. You're basically the the the.
- 2:00:57Ally. Created.
- 2:00:58A deck based on TTRPGS, which is the weirdest about face moment
- 2:01:03where we're getting a real D meta game yeah yeah we're
- 2:01:05getting a real and it's a reference to 1st edition fucking
- 2:01:08DND 'cause it says pen and paper fighter pen and paper wizard and
- 2:01:12pen and paper cleric yeah I guess second edition DND
- 2:01:16technically the cool gimmick about this card these cards is
- 2:01:20that they pretty much cannot be destroyed and sent to your
- 2:01:24graveyard at all anytime you lose the card it goes back to
- 2:01:27your hand and you can use your invocation role for initiative
- 2:01:32which allows you to get different effects based.
- 2:01:36On the roles of. AD 20 So at base it strengthens
- 2:01:40all warrior cards and then you roll the D20.
- 2:01:43On a 20 it gets Overwhelm, Piercer 1, and Sniper 1, which
- 2:01:48is to say that no matter what, it's doing a lot of damage to
- 2:01:52everything. On an 11 to 19 it just gets
- 2:01:56overwhelmed. On a six to 10 it gets Sniper,
- 2:01:58on a 2 to 5 it gets Piercer, and on a natural 1 it gets
- 2:02:01underwhelmed. The deck gimmick for this
- 2:02:05playbook? Fucks so.
- 2:02:06Hard dude, I love it. Running, you know, running for
- 2:02:13the ally. Like we said, create over the
- 2:02:17top enemies that need to. Be shown an ounce.
- 2:02:19Of reality. Give the players hard choices
- 2:02:23between their personal responsibilities and the
- 2:02:25children's card game. Make them feel like just the
- 2:02:29normal guy in a situation where they're running around with
- 2:02:32Yukimoto. Basically speaking.
- 2:02:35You get a couple, some dude named Jim.
- 2:02:38You're just yeah, you're just, you're just like when you think
- 2:02:40about Jerry and the boys, you are the boys.
- 2:02:44You're not about you get some rules about how to run your
- 2:02:48dark. Steel Citadel.
- 2:02:50Or how to use your trade binder. So I I think I would love to
- 2:02:54have in in a game with, you know, 1 judge and three players.
- 2:02:57I feel like at least one person should be the ally just for the
- 2:02:59fun that you out of that next playbook we have is the spirit.
- 2:03:05This is oh God, what's the? Alien dude's name in in Vexel.
- 2:03:10Oh Astral. Yeah, this is that character
- 2:03:16because it specifically. Is not.
- 2:03:18The it's not. Yami because.
- 2:03:20That's again in a different book, yeah.
- 2:03:24Astral basically assumes that you are not of this world.
- 2:03:27You are either a ghost or an alien or a magic.
- 2:03:32Spell. Given form, you are just some
- 2:03:35weird magical bullshit. You are just as I lovingly call
- 2:03:39it. You are Egyptian space magic.
- 2:03:42To reflect this, you have. Two passion.
- 2:03:45Zero skill and 0 in friendship your.
- 2:03:51Your skills are. All pertaining to the fact that
- 2:03:55you, or sorry due to your unknown or your unusual origin I
- 2:03:59should say, essentially turns yourself into a card you build
- 2:04:04your deck gimmick around. Yourself.
- 2:04:07In all of your abilities? Yeah, exactly.
- 2:04:10One of your abilities is called I play me.
- 2:04:12You get to turn yourself into your ace card and play yourself.
- 2:04:18You get you. Of all the characters I argue
- 2:04:22get the most asshole magic because for example one skill
- 2:04:27called Unholy. Strength.
- 2:04:29When you overcome weakness, you can choose two benefits instead
- 2:04:31of 1. Unreal presence.
- 2:04:33You can't be hurt, you're invisible.
- 2:04:35You just, you just do weird magical shits.
- 2:04:38It's weird there. Is a second.
- 2:04:39Most Wild 1 coming up. But it's.
- 2:04:42I think as far as I'm concerned, this is the one that's the most
- 2:04:44intrinsically otherworldly, specifically magical roles
- 2:04:50playing the spirit. You should.
- 2:04:51Really. Embody your otherness.
- 2:04:54You are not like everyone else. You don't necessarily know what
- 2:04:56you are, so you should feel free to.
- 2:04:59Yeah, you should just feel free to lean into being weird, doing
- 2:05:03weird shit, having weird fun, being the character that you say
- 2:05:07something and everyone turns to look at you just have fun being
- 2:05:11eccentric and and weird. It does say.
- 2:05:18That you know. Depending on what?
- 2:05:19You choose your origin to. Be to play into specific norms
- 2:05:24about that. So if you are a nature spirit,
- 2:05:28you know, play into tropes that involve our nature.
- 2:05:31If you're like if you or some sort of animal spirit, you know.
- 2:05:36Play into. That do weird animal spirit
- 2:05:38things. The example deck they give you
- 2:05:41is the. Building blocks of.
- 2:05:43Hope it's a what what do? You call.
- 2:05:49What's the what's the TCG gimmick?
- 2:05:50Where you do better at low health.
- 2:05:52Aspiration. Well, I don't know if it has a
- 2:05:55specific. Name like that?
- 2:05:57I mean it. Might.
- 2:05:59Think I heard, yeah, essentially the the the the deck does better
- 2:06:04the lower health you have. So a lot of the.
- 2:06:07A lot of the cards you have. Are very.
- 2:06:13Strong. With the caveat with the.
- 2:06:15Weakness that there are effects only proc when you are below
- 2:06:20less than half your health. Actually, this is a pretty good
- 2:06:24example of. Showing how the the weaknesses.
- 2:06:26System can buy you more effect points for your budget.
- 2:06:34I didn't read all of the lore primer stuff.
- 2:06:39But considering that it's the deck is called BBH as opposed to
- 2:06:43the the resolves BBB, there's probably a connection there that
- 2:06:47I'm not aware of. Well, I mean, seeing as how the
- 2:06:51resolve has Yuma's deck, and if this character is supposed to be
- 2:06:55Astral, who is Yuma's spirit buddy, it might just be a
- 2:06:58reference to that. It could be.
- 2:07:00Yeah, that's what I'm thinking as far as running.
- 2:07:05For the Spirit is concerned. Kind of the opposite of what we
- 2:07:08said, right? Prepare to.
- 2:07:11To have NPCS treat your. Character like a weird.
- 2:07:14Thing give them information and. And.
- 2:07:20Let them play into the fact that like.
- 2:07:22They're receiving this. Information with no context or
- 2:07:27give them sort of esoteric. It's the word I'm looking for
- 2:07:35premonitions of of disasters. To come.
- 2:07:37Stuff like that when they're running their abilities, like
- 2:07:43things like I play me play into the character's fear or or
- 2:07:52excitedness to that that they get to interact with the game
- 2:07:56and you know, play into their fear.
- 2:07:59Should their character card be destroyed, that could give them
- 2:08:02some serious baggage, considering that they might be,
- 2:08:04you know, maybe dying when a character uses final.
- 2:08:09Form for their. First time play into it, give
- 2:08:11them a really cool big moment that shows off that yeah, this
- 2:08:14is literally their final form. Well, stuff like that.
- 2:08:18After them you get a. Medium.
- 2:08:21Which? I like this.
- 2:08:24This class is weird I. I both like.
- 2:08:26It and dislike it in each measure on pretty much every
- 2:08:30level. Have you read this one at all?
- 2:08:35No, like yes and no. It's weird because it's the only
- 2:08:39one in the game that is a specifically human character
- 2:08:43that has crazy psychic powers, and those psychic powers can
- 2:08:47affect things in. Like.
- 2:08:49In and outside the duel, like one of their abilities talks
- 2:08:51about how their psychic powers hurt people or or cause
- 2:08:54collateral damage. But I wouldn't like I I I know
- 2:08:58it gives you information on how to deal with this, but like even
- 2:09:01that I feel like doesn't give me the information I want and need
- 2:09:06because if the game says the. Duels should not affect reality.
- 2:09:09But this, this in this case, this character's duels affect
- 2:09:13reality. Well, it didn't say the duel
- 2:09:15shouldn't affect reality. It said the cards shouldn't
- 2:09:18affect reality. But it did say that the
- 2:09:20playbook's abilities can affect reality during the card game,
- 2:09:24right? That that's giving me some weird
- 2:09:26disco biscuits, not gonna lie. You're saying that like, because
- 2:09:30the fact that the duel can affect reality with the psychic
- 2:09:33powers but the cards can't affect reality is kind of odd
- 2:09:36because no, it's saying mechanically when you're
- 2:09:39designing your cards for your deck, do not design cards that
- 2:09:43have an effect on reality. But your playbook can give you
- 2:09:48stuff that will do that. It's just talking about when
- 2:09:51you're designing cards for your deck, don't design cards that
- 2:09:54have an impact on the actual world state.
- 2:09:56Such as like when I play this card, the ground turns to lava
- 2:10:00or some shit like that, right? It's saying don't design cards
- 2:10:03with that impetus, but the playbooks could potentially have
- 2:10:07those kinds of abilities, this being one of them.
- 2:10:12OK, I think I get. What you're saying?
- 2:10:16As part of the medium, you are blessed and cursed with a unique
- 2:10:19crazy psychic power. You have.
- 2:10:22Like I said, we have you have real literal psychic powers.
- 2:10:25This isn't like a, this isn't the heart of the cards.
- 2:10:29You. Have you are doing?
- 2:10:30Real crazy psychic aspect. It's not, it's not implied
- 2:10:33powers. It's like straight up crazy
- 2:10:35psychic powers. Yeah.
- 2:10:37The first skill that you start the game with is called Storm
- 2:10:39Conduit. It gives you your crazy psychic
- 2:10:42power, whether that's super strength.
- 2:10:46Telekinesis. Telepathy, animal
- 2:10:47transformation, technopathy, elemental control, weapon
- 2:10:50manifestation. That one's weird, but it's a
- 2:10:54weird one. I make gun.
- 2:10:56Yeah, well you make gun in a game where the game specifically
- 2:10:59says that all problems have to be solvable in the card game and
- 2:11:05says you. Can't shoot someone but I can
- 2:11:06also make a gun at the same time.
- 2:11:08It doesn't say you have to solve everything that the card game.
- 2:11:10It says you should solve most things, but that there will be
- 2:11:13situations outside of it. Does it?
- 2:11:16I'm pretty sure it says very specifically.
- 2:11:18All problems have to be. Solvable in the card game.
- 2:11:20It doesn't say have to be. It says problems are often
- 2:11:23solved that way. Hold on, it's not.
- 2:11:28It's not. It's not saying that you can't.
- 2:11:30Have a scenario where a character gets into an actual
- 2:11:32physical fight. It's just saying most people in
- 2:11:35universe solve their problems via the card game.
- 2:11:41Hold on. Hold on, I got to.
- 2:11:42I got to check this real quick because I feel like I'm going
- 2:11:44crazy now. I don't remember exactly where I
- 2:11:46said where it says it, so I don't know that you're going to
- 2:11:48be able to find it. Stand by.
- 2:11:50Stand by it. No.
- 2:11:53Yeah. Here we go.
- 2:11:54It says in the in the principles card games.
- 2:11:56Decide everything from tiny disputes to world shaking
- 2:11:59calamities. Nearly everything in the story
- 2:12:01can be solved through card games.
- 2:12:03Can be I guess. I don't know, I don't.
- 2:12:08Can be. It's.
- 2:12:12Saying it's. Saying we're using anime.
- 2:12:14Right. Think again.
- 2:12:15Just think about the the the thing that think about the media
- 2:12:20that they are pulling from as reference.
- 2:12:22In Yu-gi-oh, most problems are solved via the card games, but
- 2:12:26there are situations where characters literally pull guns
- 2:12:29on each other. This is the thing that has
- 2:12:33happened. Or.
- 2:12:35Characters or characters? Physic Kiba physically beats the
- 2:12:39dog shit out of people. He does.
- 2:12:41He does do that and Joey motherfuckers be throwing.
- 2:12:47Hands. Though he does kill someone in
- 2:12:50the season 0 manga with. Yo-yo, that is the thing that.
- 2:12:52Happens fair enough yeah now granted you shouldn't have your
- 2:12:56final battle be decided via guns right that would be kind of
- 2:12:59stupid but like yeah there could be conflicts that happened
- 2:13:02outside of that fair enough your.
- 2:13:06Abilities all sort of focus. Around how your powers view
- 2:13:11things to the environment. I don't know why I said do like
- 2:13:14that they do things to the environment.
- 2:13:16A lot. Of them are not specifically
- 2:13:20used in the duel, the only one that is as.
- 2:13:22Far as I'm aware. Is the dark card games which
- 2:13:24lets you do the bakura shadow shadow game stuff it it
- 2:13:31literally gives you the penalty. Option establish.
- 2:13:34A. A establish that the loser will
- 2:13:36face supernatural consequences such as losing memories,
- 2:13:39becoming cursed to stay in one place, or becoming unable to
- 2:13:42battle again. Yeah, I like the idea that you
- 2:13:45could just mind break a motherfucker.
- 2:13:48Remember how Yuki has that power and then never?
- 2:13:50Uses it again after. One, it would have been really
- 2:13:53useful with dealing with a lot of people.
- 2:13:55Yeah, I give you aneurysm. I give you stupify bro.
- 2:14:03Bro drops their intelligence to 1.
- 2:14:05Hits them with the feeble. Mind, that is kind of what
- 2:14:09happened. Nuts.
- 2:14:10It's exactly what happens. When role-playing the medium,
- 2:14:15it's best to to play into your absolute deepest angst.
- 2:14:21You are a storm of collateral damage.
- 2:14:24You are going to hurt the things and people you care about.
- 2:14:28There's not a whole what? I don't understand why it's
- 2:14:31called storm conduit. I didn't get the name.
- 2:14:35I I didn't really either, to be honest.
- 2:14:38I feel like it has to be a reference.
- 2:14:39I just don't know what it is. Yeah, but I don't, I don't even
- 2:14:43like. The problem is that there's
- 2:14:44quite. A few anime.
- 2:14:45To pull from. So it could be any.
- 2:14:46I know, I know. I put my money on Vanguard.
- 2:14:50I don't know why, but I'm putting it on Vanguard.
- 2:14:52I don't think so. Your +2 impassion essentially
- 2:14:57makes it so that, much like the resolved, you're very good at
- 2:15:00getting into trouble and putting yourself in a situation where
- 2:15:03you use your crazy psychic powers to solve your problems.
- 2:15:07You are developing those skills so you have a plus one in the
- 2:15:10skill trait, but because of your extreme levels of angst, you're
- 2:15:14sitting at a -. 1 To friendship your character.
- 2:15:20Should be subject to to. Things that will hinder them,
- 2:15:23being angsty or antisocial, anxious, depressed, short
- 2:15:28tempered. Play into your negative traits
- 2:15:31and give yourself something to strive for.
- 2:15:35The example. Deck is ultraviolence light.
- 2:15:39I love the name for this. It's.
- 2:15:45It's kind of odd cause so. This is this is what the game is
- 2:15:48talking about. It sort of the gimmick is
- 2:15:52actions cause. Collateral damage to you and
- 2:15:55your. Opponent and it says.
- 2:15:58Collateral damage and it. Treated It uses the word
- 2:16:01collateral damage several times in the rules to talk about like
- 2:16:04doing actual damage to things, but in this instance it just
- 2:16:10means that you are going to be damaging yourself and the enemy.
- 2:16:15So you're just sort of it's trying to think of what?
- 2:16:19Help me out of here what I. I I.
- 2:16:23Alright, what? I don't understand what you're
- 2:16:26what are you saying is a problem here?
- 2:16:28Well, so the problem I'm having is that they're using
- 2:16:30collateral. Damage.
- 2:16:32In two different contexts. In the description for the
- 2:16:35medium, they're using collateral damage as a literal.
- 2:16:38You are causing damage to the environment in the deck.
- 2:16:42You're using collateral damage to describe that you are
- 2:16:44damaging yourself as well as the enemy.
- 2:16:48So that was one thing. What are you confused about
- 2:16:50there? There's.
- 2:16:52A name. For that self-inflicted damage.
- 2:16:56I don't. I thought it was something.
- 2:17:00Else it's fine. It's collateral damage.
- 2:17:02What do you mean? That makes perfect sense
- 2:17:04mechanically there. There's no way to damage the
- 2:17:06environment in the card game, so collateral damage translates to
- 2:17:09hurting yourself. You're the collateral.
- 2:17:16I, I don't know it, it like I said, the the shift in in.
- 2:17:18Context confused me. You zoned in on some weird shit.
- 2:17:23Sometimes so do you, and I don't.
- 2:17:24Want to hear that from you? That's not.
- 2:17:30OK, I I. Don't I don't understand what?
- 2:17:32You're confused about in that scenario.
- 2:17:33But OK, we're moving on. It's fine when you run the
- 2:17:36medium play into their volatile destructive nature.
- 2:17:42You know, put things in front of them that they are going to
- 2:17:45destroy, create problems for them that their own social
- 2:17:51hindrances will actively stop them from doing.
- 2:17:54But give them reasons or give the players reasons to want to
- 2:17:59support them and help them be better and and gain control over
- 2:18:03this maelstrom of abilities they have.
- 2:18:07After the medium you have the. Destined This is the Yuki
- 2:18:10character. Despite how much they look like
- 2:18:12Eric, you're part of something greater.
- 2:18:15You were pulled into the great game of fate, whether you like
- 2:18:18it or not, and your destiny will lead you to something greater or
- 2:18:23plagued with calamity. Your skills are at A1 in
- 2:18:28passion, A1 at skill, and a zero in friendship.
- 2:18:32Your abilities are all about having the heart of the cards
- 2:18:35and using crazy card rituals like you you to summon your
- 2:18:39black luster soldier. You have literal plot armor by
- 2:18:42allowing you to ignore failed roles.
- 2:18:47It's. I like this one.
- 2:18:49Fun one. Just going to ignore.
- 2:18:51Just going to ignore my. Reference on that one I didn't
- 2:18:54even hear. You black luster.
- 2:18:58Soldier. Oh yeah.
- 2:19:00When, When Grandpa's doing naughty things with his car.
- 2:19:04Yeah, yeah, yeah. You kill bridge.
- 2:19:06We're in the beach. We're in the beach.
- 2:19:12I. Love you my friend used to say
- 2:19:17that. All the time.
- 2:19:18We're in the beach. Like I mean how?
- 2:19:21Often do you and I literally go it is what I do.
- 2:19:24Yoga. That's what I do.
- 2:19:25Yoga. That's not playing Copper Breed.
- 2:19:30Draw three more cards. That's not even card.
- 2:19:35Yeah, I, I, I like the skills on this.
- 2:19:37One I I like that they're just really.
- 2:19:38Playing into the Yuki bullshit by again, having Heart of the
- 2:19:41cards and Plot Armor as literal skills that you can tap into.
- 2:19:46It's very. It's very.
- 2:19:47And it's time to duel. It's time to duel.
- 2:19:50Yeah, Yeah. Which I do love that one.
- 2:19:51When you would enter a dangerous situation, you could just
- 2:19:54initiate a card game. Like, I understand something's
- 2:19:56about to go down, but no, no, no.
- 2:19:58That one. I love that.
- 2:19:59Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:20:01You're like, oh, something bad's about to happen.
- 2:20:02No, no, no, we're going to duel. Instead.
- 2:20:04I challenge you to a children's card game.
- 2:20:07Yeah, Like, Bros got a fucking gun pointed at your face.
- 2:20:10Like, duel me. Duel me now putter offer.
- 2:20:13Duel me for it. Yeah.
- 2:20:14What? Bro?
- 2:20:16What? I just I'm I'm.
- 2:20:19Thinking of the Devil Artemis video where they have it's it's
- 2:20:22it's sell doing Yuki or he's dealing.
- 2:20:26Kermit, because of course, Kermit the Frog.
- 2:20:27Is a thing with Devil? Artemis and he's and Yuki's like
- 2:20:31an ice. What is it?
- 2:20:32I I I use this spell card and sacrifice dark Magician to
- 2:20:37summon my ultimate monster Dark magician with a cat.
- 2:20:41I was like, oh shit, he's backing me.
- 2:20:47Like an I played the equip. Card extendo mags to let him
- 2:20:50attack. Oh no, it's.
- 2:20:53Really cursed, but I kind of love it.
- 2:20:55Oh my God. Equip.
- 2:20:56Cards. That was a thing that existed
- 2:20:58for a a period of time. Apparently they're still in the
- 2:21:01meta according to that YouTube we both watch.
- 2:21:04What the fuck? That's kind of wild.
- 2:21:09Role-playing the. Destined you.
- 2:21:12Sort of play. Into your kind of protagonist
- 2:21:16privilege, you play into your heroic origin and you have
- 2:21:23something called. The.
- 2:21:24Destruction track, which is part of your Mark of Destiny still
- 2:21:30essentially. How is this?
- 2:21:36Described. You you essentially have.
- 2:21:38Your mark that allows. You to you.
- 2:21:41To to pull from a number of abilities.
- 2:21:44So searching your deck from a card and adding it to your hand,
- 2:21:47asking the judge questions that they have to answer, naming
- 2:21:52something that you want to go your way every.
- 2:21:54Time you name 1. Of those, you get a tick on
- 2:21:56what's called your destruction track, and when that fills,
- 2:21:59something calamitous happens that will lead you to your
- 2:22:02ultimate heroic destiny. So the game talks about leaning
- 2:22:09into that and not being. Afraid of of.
- 2:22:12Tapping into that mark of destiny, but being even handed
- 2:22:15enough to not, you know, run away with it.
- 2:22:19When you're running the. Destined you should put things
- 2:22:24in front of the players that they might have.
- 2:22:25To use their Mark of Destiny. To solve and when it comes to
- 2:22:29their skills, you know, throw things at them that they can
- 2:22:33otherwise just. It's time.
- 2:22:35To duel their way out of, that's cool.
- 2:22:41Yeah. Their their example deck is
- 2:22:43called Kathonian Thamatergy. This is your dark magician.
- 2:22:47You have your torch of Hecatee, your path of the triple goddess,
- 2:22:50your Medea priest of Hecatee and your Impusa Kathonian guard.
- 2:22:55Oh wait no they literally have. They have your Celtic your your
- 2:22:59your Celtic guardian and your dark magician in the same deck.
- 2:23:03That's pretty funny, except, except Greek themed instead of
- 2:23:06Egyptian themed, right, Right. Yeah, you could do some edition.
- 2:23:17Do we keep going or do we call it for today?
- 2:23:20OK bro, there's like four more playbooks.
- 2:23:23No. There's two more, is there?
- 2:23:26Oh, OK. I, I I don't know.
- 2:23:32Decide your own fate, all right. I'll, I'll, I'll have Brett kill
- 2:23:35me. It's fine.
- 2:23:36After this, we have the idealist.
- 2:23:40You are kind of what it describes on the tin.
- 2:23:42You. Are similar.
- 2:23:43To the gifted, where you are sort of a symbol of charisma and
- 2:23:49connection, but your ability to see the brighter side of things
- 2:23:53is literally codified into your into your playbook in a lot of
- 2:23:56ways. And your skills show this off by
- 2:23:59having a one in passion A0IN skill and one in friendship
- 2:24:05your. Your The skill that you start
- 2:24:07off with is called things. I believe in you essentially get
- 2:24:11one ideology that. You and.
- 2:24:13Your judge can work with or create so, law, humanity,
- 2:24:16friendship, safety, destiny, comfort, inequality, freedom, or
- 2:24:19justice. And whenever you do something
- 2:24:21that exemplifies that belief, that principle, you get to add a
- 2:24:25+ 1 to it. If you are forced to taking
- 2:24:28action that opposes it, you take a -1.
- 2:24:33This is another one of those support classes where you a.
- 2:24:39Lot of your abilities. Are are centered around
- 2:24:43assisting your allies? In the narrative.
- 2:24:45Less so in the duels, but you can actually use your ideology
- 2:24:51to assist players in their duels if they are doing something that
- 2:24:55shares your ideology. Role-playing the idealist you.
- 2:24:59Are just sort of. A symbol of goodness in the
- 2:25:04world, be it justice. Freedom or humanity?
- 2:25:06You express your beliefs freely and you try to encourage people
- 2:25:10to see things your way. Your plus one to passion or
- 2:25:13friendship make you pretty good at conveying your feelings.
- 2:25:16But you know that that skill, that zero in skill is going to
- 2:25:20make some things a little difficult for you.
- 2:25:23The example deck is the Shining Glade Insects.
- 2:25:27The gimmick is based. Around.
- 2:25:31Having a strong ace and then defending it with with weaker
- 2:25:34monsters and forcing things to attack other monsters that
- 2:25:37aren't your ace. Running for the idealist.
- 2:25:41Introducing villains that are diametrically opposed to them,
- 2:25:45giving them interesting foils and testing their ideals
- 2:25:48whenever possible and giving them giving them situations
- 2:25:53where they can encourage people. With their ideals.
- 2:25:57Finally, we have the turncoat. You were a bad guy and now
- 2:26:01you're good. You are the Duke, so to.
- 2:26:06Speak, you're still. In and you are an edgy queen,
- 2:26:09but yeah, you're this is kind of the Duke Devlin once a bad guy,
- 2:26:12now a good guy Interestingly enough, your.
- 2:26:17Allies may or might not. Know that you were, at one point
- 2:26:20a villain. They might and you might play
- 2:26:22into that, but it's not necessarily a need.
- 2:26:25Your skills reflect your edgy former villain demeanor by
- 2:26:28giving you a 0 in passion, A1 in skill, and a one in friendship.
- 2:26:33The skill that you start with is.
- 2:26:35Your dark past. It allows you to list a series
- 2:26:39of terrible things that you have either done or had done to you
- 2:26:42by specific people, specifically accomplices or victims during
- 2:26:47character creation. Describe the terrible.
- 2:26:50Things that you did. In your past and whenever you
- 2:26:52attempt to defeat, overcome, or compel yourself to goodness,
- 2:26:57gain plus one to any roles you make to try to right your sorry.
- 2:27:00When you try to right the wrongs or act in goodness, you get to
- 2:27:03add +1 to your roles. You also add +1 where you try to
- 2:27:08seek forgiveness for the things. That you've done.
- 2:27:11Your skills stand around you, bettering yourself.
- 2:27:13As a person. Bettering the people around you,
- 2:27:17finding common ground with other villains which is pretty neat.
- 2:27:21All role-playing you should play into.
- 2:27:23Your dark, edgy back story. Play into the uncertainty that
- 2:27:27comes with trying to turn a new leaf, and lean into the fact
- 2:27:33that you might be a bit of an. Outcast with.
- 2:27:35The new with your new friends, don't be afraid to.
- 2:27:43Don't be. Afraid to come off as a little.
- 2:27:44Odd when you're. You know, trying to be
- 2:27:49remorseful or empathetic because you are expressing new emotions
- 2:27:52that you did not prevail. The example of that is the.
- 2:27:57Reformed spider queen make. Sure, your edgy background music
- 2:28:02is always playing. Yes, that too, actually.
- 2:28:05So when we were talking about that, that one archetype, Josh,
- 2:28:07that affects things specifically from the graveyard, this does
- 2:28:10that. I thought that was pretty funny.
- 2:28:14Basically you can. You once your ace is out you can
- 2:28:19return monsters from the graveyard to do things and they
- 2:28:23pretty much the the normal monsters cannot.
- 2:28:25Be played from your. Hand they have to be sacrificed,
- 2:28:28so I think that's pretty funny. And you have an invocation that
- 2:28:30literally lets you dump your hand, which is hilarious when
- 2:28:35running for the turncoat. Make sure they're evil.
- 2:28:37Acts of the past come up to bite them.
- 2:28:41They're evil mess. They're evil ass make their.
- 2:28:46Victims. And former accomplices show up
- 2:28:49to make the narrative messy. Give the player control over
- 2:28:53their past, let them describe to you how it defines them, and
- 2:28:59give them moments where they can achieve forgiven.
- 2:29:01And that's a really big one with all of the.
- 2:29:05Playbooks done. The game talks about the several
- 2:29:09advancements you can. Take most.
- 2:29:11Of them are pretty standard fare for Powered by the Apocalypse.
- 2:29:15They do differ in that you're allowed to take 10 advancements
- 2:29:19before. You.
- 2:29:22Must retire your character and complete their arc.
- 2:29:25A lot of that comes down to being able to add new staples to
- 2:29:28your deck and adding new ace cards to your deck.
- 2:29:33I don't. I think that's.
- 2:29:34I think that's the most. Advancements I've seen on a
- 2:29:36character in total in a PBTA game. 10 No.
- 2:29:46Are there more? It's a lot, no?
- 2:29:51Between your. Regular and your majors?
- 2:29:52No, I don't. Think that's that many?
- 2:29:55Fair enough I think. Base apocalypse roads.
- 2:29:57Usually like 12. Really.
- 2:30:00Oh, wow. OK.
- 2:30:02For. I have to check every playbook,
- 2:30:05but for a lot of them. Maybe 10:00-ish, briefly going
- 2:30:10over Chapter 5, Chapter 5. Is the.
- 2:30:13The OR docket of the book. This is a very chunky boy coming
- 2:30:17in at probably close to 80 pages.
- 2:30:21We're not going to go into all of this, so we're going to give
- 2:30:25a pretty basic breakdown. The section does have a good
- 2:30:29amount to offer in some ways that I like, in other ways that
- 2:30:32I don't. First and foremost, it provides
- 2:30:35a series of names, locations, organizations, and characters
- 2:30:40that the players can interact with.
- 2:30:42Each location and organization come with specific plot hooks
- 2:30:45that allow you to interweave them into your story.
- 2:30:49Secondly, it references specific historical events both within
- 2:30:53the city and the setting as a whole.
- 2:30:56Long story short, it's Yu-gi-oh, but replace Egypt with Greece,
- 2:31:00up to and including finding the Egyptian God cards.
- 2:31:02Except they're Greek. Clueless thing.
- 2:31:05That was just a thing they. Decided they were like.
- 2:31:07Instead of Egypt, we're just going to go whole hog on Greece,
- 2:31:09huh? Yeah, actually there is a a list
- 2:31:12of magic. Items.
- 2:31:14At the beginning of the shuffle city that are the Millennium
- 2:31:17items, Yes. Nice.
- 2:31:21Oh, The Olympian. Artifacts you mean?
- 2:31:23Yes, God damn it, someone knows. Yeah, it's great.
- 2:31:28Achilles eye patch. Get the fuck out of here.
- 2:31:30Cape of the Golden Fleece. Oh my God, they did.
- 2:31:33Yep. The coolest thing, at least in
- 2:31:37my opinion, is that Chapter 5 contains dozens, and I mean
- 2:31:43dozens of NPCS with. Unique.
- 2:31:46Names, character personalities, card gimmicks, and stat blocks
- 2:31:52that NP that the judge can run. These NPCS are fully stated as
- 2:31:56far as the you know perfect draw is concerned and have some of
- 2:32:00the coolest deck archetypes in the game.
- 2:32:03This section of the book, the NPC section, is 60 pages long.
- 2:32:10It is a fuck ton of information. You.
- 2:32:12Are never going to. Have to make NPCS from scratch
- 2:32:15literally ever. It's wild.
- 2:32:18I mean, if you're on a lot of campaigns, maybe eventually,
- 2:32:21eventually, but you could very easily rehash characters and
- 2:32:24change some proper nouns around and now you're rehashed
- 2:32:28immediately. The final thing we're going to
- 2:32:31go over super, super quick is the Judge's Handbook.
- 2:32:35It does not a whole lot to talk about here.
- 2:32:38It gives you some information about what you think about, what
- 2:32:41you should think about before you play, and defining
- 2:32:43boundaries, creating your setting in the game.
- 2:32:47There was a small section about resolving card problems,
- 2:32:52basically giving you a oh God, what's the phrase I'm looking
- 2:32:56for oh God. It.
- 2:33:06Explains to you the. The general into the.
- 2:33:08Specifics when it comes to resolving discrepancies with
- 2:33:11cards. What cards take precedence over
- 2:33:13others? The order of operations?
- 2:33:15Yes, exactly it does that. That is, you know about a page
- 2:33:23long it gives you information for.
- 2:33:28Running battles that are not. Just basic one V ones.
- 2:33:31A little bit of information on multiplayer battles,
- 2:33:33simultaneous battles which is a 2 that are happening at the same
- 2:33:37time but are in different locations.
- 2:33:39I do like that they gave rules on multi person like team
- 2:33:43battles and shit like that 'cause that was one of the big
- 2:33:46concerns I had when I thought about like how this game would
- 2:33:49actually play out. Is the idea of well usually in
- 2:33:53an anime like Yu-gi-oh there's only one person dueling at a
- 2:33:56time and like in a tabletop context that kind of sucks.
- 2:34:00Yes, correct, and I agree. I'm happy that they.
- 2:34:03Brought that up. They even give you a section for
- 2:34:06if, like what to do when there is only A1V1 going on, like
- 2:34:10establishing goals for the other characters to do so they're not
- 2:34:12just sitting there on the sidelines watching.
- 2:34:15Yeah. So I appreciate that it it does
- 2:34:19talk about special keywords that.
- 2:34:21Are not. In the main book things like
- 2:34:24activations or fusing there's also responding respond cards or
- 2:34:29straight up trap cards and resource cards.
- 2:34:31That is land and mana from magic.
- 2:34:34I was I was surprised they didn't make a trap card mechanic
- 2:34:37in the base game. I I agree they I mean.
- 2:34:41They kind of did. With the fumble keyword, but
- 2:34:44fumble is a little more. Fumble relies a lot more.
- 2:34:50On the interrupt move than just a card skill itself.
- 2:34:53So maybe they were trying to figure out how to invent one
- 2:34:56while not stepping on the other. Well, I think the main thing
- 2:34:59they were trying to do it is is have minimal minimize needing to
- 2:35:05remember what's on your field. Quote UN quote.
- 2:35:07Yeah, that too. The final thing they give you is
- 2:35:12some advice for replicating other TCG effects.
- 2:35:16So effects that forced my force opponents to discard.
- 2:35:22Winning by decking people out, having extra decks or cards
- 2:35:25outside of the game, having hero cards, slash deck leaders.
- 2:35:29This is commander and magic Ambrose getting into CKS getting
- 2:35:34into extra decks would be a lot. Yeah no, I agree.
- 2:35:41I've never heard about mulligans before.
- 2:35:43But fair enough. Mulliganing.
- 2:35:45You don't know what a Mulligan is.
- 2:35:46Mulligans when you dump your hand to get a new hand.
- 2:35:50Oh, so like a Mulligan in Magic at the start of at the start, at
- 2:35:56the first round of the game, when you draw your initial hand,
- 2:35:59you can Mulligan as many cards as you want, replace them.
- 2:36:01So if you like, draw 5. I don't remember if you draw 5
- 2:36:04or 6 in Magic, but you draw your 5 or 6 or whatever, and then if
- 2:36:07you don't like 3 of your cards, you dump them and redraw 3.
- 2:36:10No, no, no, I'm a filthy liar. Do you have to dump your whole
- 2:36:14hand? You might have to dump your
- 2:36:15whole hand, I forget, but there's a rule on your first
- 2:36:18Turner magic. If you don't like your hand,
- 2:36:20you. Can replace.
- 2:36:21That's what a Mulligan is. Gotcha.
- 2:36:23It's when you're in the middle of a match.
- 2:36:25A Mulligan card is anything that lets you throw out cards for new
- 2:36:28cards. I don't know why it's called
- 2:36:33Mulligan, don't ask me, but yeah.
- 2:36:37Besides that, that is. Perfect draw everybody.
- 2:36:42I really like. This game, I think this game is
- 2:36:44awesome. I really want to play it.
- 2:36:45And I don't know, rewatch the OG Yu-gi-oh, at least Duelist
- 2:36:50Kingdom. It's a good time.
- 2:36:52I mean, you know. I don't.
- 2:36:54I don't know that you have to. Do that necessarily, not to no
- 2:36:58if you want, but is a good time. Yes, I.
- 2:37:00Mean, I feel like a lot of people are.
- 2:37:05Not going to. Jive with Yu-gi-oh, but that's.
- 2:37:07A whole other think I don't know I I was like I don't know if I'm
- 2:37:10going to like re watching this and I did and was like wait this
- 2:37:14slaps actually if you already are into anime.
- 2:37:18Sure, but if you're kind of. Like on the on the peripherals
- 2:37:22kind of anime fan. I don't I don't know if Yu-gi-oh
- 2:37:24be hitting them to be honest. I want to test the theory we we
- 2:37:28should get. Someone who doesn't usually
- 2:37:29watch anime. And get them to re watch
- 2:37:31Yu-gi-oh and see or get them to watch it for the first time and
- 2:37:33see if it it hits. I mean the thing that Yu-gi-oh
- 2:37:36has a very Spanish soap opera energy to.
- 2:37:41It so it. Makes it so good.
- 2:37:43It's very dramatic. Yeah.
- 2:37:44A lot of people don't like that they didn't grow up a Telemundo.
- 2:37:49Yeah, no, they did not. The white people don't know what
- 2:37:53Telemundo is. It's a damn shame.
- 2:37:58Yeah. I mean, you know, fuck, what was
- 2:38:04I going? To say shit.
- 2:38:07No, I can't remember. I don't know this game.
- 2:38:08Is certainly an interesting premise if.
- 2:38:10Nothing else. It's an interesting idea.
- 2:38:12And like I said, if somebody approached me and was like,
- 2:38:16could you design A tabletop game for me that emulates the
- 2:38:19Yu-gi-oh anime, I'd be like, no, you're going to have to find
- 2:38:23somebody else. I'm not doing that.
- 2:38:27That's too much. That's.
- 2:38:28Too much dog. This game really does exemplify
- 2:38:32the. Idea that there's a niche market
- 2:38:33for everybody. I it is, yeah, God damn.
- 2:38:38But it's not even about the niches.
- 2:38:39It's just about I know how complicated tabletop or I know
- 2:38:43how complicated trading card games get.
- 2:38:45And so like trying to emulate that in any capacity in a
- 2:38:50tabletop, trying to emulate a game within a game, I'm just
- 2:38:52like, Nah, dog, absolutely not understandable.
- 2:38:58And. I guarantee you there's people
- 2:38:59out. There, that will try to play
- 2:39:01this game and then be disappointed that it's not
- 2:39:04closer to actual Yu-gi-oh. You know what I'm saying?
- 2:39:10I do I, I think I don't agree with what those people are.
- 2:39:15I don't agree. With what the logic of?
- 2:39:16Those people will be. But I know there's going to be
- 2:39:18those people out there. Like it should be closer to
- 2:39:20Yu-gi-oh. Yeah, I'm.
- 2:39:22I'm sure you are going to get those.
- 2:39:24They're wrong, but you know, whatever.
- 2:39:26Yeah. But yeah, that's been us.

- 2:39:57Sending a coffee? That's not how that works.
- 2:40:00You're not sending me a coffee. In the mail bro.
- 2:40:04I don't know. It's like when people when
- 2:40:05people. Plug coffee, they just.
- 2:40:07Say, send me a coffee. Like, I know you could just, I
- 2:40:09dined out. But you, Oh, my God, nevermind.
- 2:40:11You're fighting the mainstream on this.
- 2:40:12I don't know what you want to say.
- 2:40:13I'm not fighting a mainstream because nobody talks about it
- 2:40:16anymore. Anyway, that's fine.
- 2:40:19All right, Peace. Motherfuckers come out.
