- 0:18because you are a great and wonderful God.
- 0:21And we thank you that we can be together in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:26If you have your Bible, turn with me to John chapter 18, John
- 0:32chapter 18 years from now we will be in chapter 18 of John,
- 0:38just not anytime soon. And the 18th chapter of John is
- 0:44just a whether it's all a great passage, but I preach on this
- 0:49section of Scripture in the Garden of Gethsemane when we go
- 0:53to Israel simply because it's such a powerful, powerful
- 0:57passage. But but it sets the tone for
- 1:00what we want to talk to you about this evening.
- 1:02Because the Bible says in Matthew chapter 5 verse #5
- 1:06blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
- 1:13And there's no greater example of meekness than Christ.
- 1:18And one of the areas in which it's illustrated the best is in
- 1:22John chapter 18. And it says this, when Jesus had
- 1:27spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over
- 1:30the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden in the in
- 1:34which he entered with his disciples.
- 1:37Now Judas also, who was betraying him, knew the place,
- 1:41for Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
- 1:45Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from
- 1:50the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with
- 1:53lanterns and torches and weapons.
- 1:57So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went
- 2:02forth and said to them, Whom do you seek?
- 2:05They answer him. Jesus and Nazarene.
- 2:08He said to them, I am. And Judas also, who was
- 2:13betraying him, was standing with them.
- 2:16So he said to them, I am. They drew back and fell to the
- 2:23ground. Therefore he again asked them,
- 2:27Whom do you seek? And they said, Jesus and
- 2:30Nazarene. Jesus answered, I told you that
- 2:33I am. So if you seek me, let these go
- 2:36their way to fulfill the word which He spoke Of those whom you
- 2:41have given me. I lost not one.
- 2:44Simon Peter then having a sword, drew it and struck the high
- 2:47priest slave and cut off his right ear.
- 2:51And the slaves name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, Put the
- 2:56sword into the sheath, the cup which the Father has given me,
- 3:00shall I not drink it? So the Roman cohort and the
- 3:05commander and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and
- 3:12bound him. So Jesus goes off to one of his
- 3:20four trials as a prisoner. But Jesus was not a prisoner, He
- 3:30was a free man. But Judas and the Roman army,
- 3:40they were not free men, but they were truly prisoners.
- 3:46They just not, did not understand that.
- 3:49Think of it. Here is Jesus in the middle of
- 3:51the night and there are no St. lights in the Garden of
- 3:55Gethsemane. And so they come with torches
- 3:58and lanterns and weapons to imprison the Prince of Peace.
- 4:07And the cohort is 600 men. And you think of the Temple
- 4:12police being somewhere between 100 and 200 police.
- 4:16So you have around 800 people plus Pharisees and and some
- 4:21probably Sadducees and scribes all gathering together.
- 4:25So you have over 800 people all coming from Jerusalem, crossing
- 4:30over the Kidron with torches and and lanterns looking for the
- 4:35light of the world. And Jesus meets them at the
- 4:39entryway to the garden and asks them, well, whom do you seek?
- 4:44And they respond by saying Jesus and Nazarene and he says I am.
- 4:48And they all fall over backwards.
- 4:50And the most amazing thing is they get back up again.
- 4:53So he asked him the same question, whom do you seek?
- 4:57And they repeat Jesus and Nazarene.
- 5:00He says I am and they take him prisoner, but he's the only free
- 5:06man in the bunch, while those who perceive themselves to be
- 5:12free are really prisoners. You see, Jesus was in complete
- 5:18control of the situation and he had all the power to do whatever
- 5:23he wanted, but he chose, he chose willingly to go with them
- 5:30because why? He was the meekest on the face
- 5:36of the earth. He becomes the supreme
- 5:39illustration of what it means to be meek.
- 5:43But Christ is the is the master of the paradox.
- 5:48One day I would like to do a a series on on on all those
- 5:55paradoxes that Christ speaks of. Christ says the last are first.
- 6:06Those who give receive. Those who die live.
- 6:16Those who lose find. Those who are the least are
- 6:23really the greatest. Those who are the poorest are
- 6:28the richest. Those who are the weakest are
- 6:31the strongest, and those who serve are really those who rule.
- 6:41He's the master of the paradox. Nobody can say it quite like
- 6:45Jesus says it. And the way he puts it in the
- 6:49way he phrases it is so startling.
- 6:54And so if you're a Jew and you're you're on the North Shore
- 6:56of the Sea of Galilee in Christ ascends this mount and takes his
- 7:01seat and begins to say blessed are the poor in spirit, for
- 7:05theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. And blessed are those who mourn,
- 7:08for they shall be comforted and blessed are the are the meek,
- 7:12for they shall inherit the earth.
- 7:14All these things are are supreme paradoxes in the minds of the
- 7:18people listening. But Jesus, Jesus knows how to
- 7:26say it in just the right way. He says very simply that those
- 7:35who realize their poverty are those who repent from their
- 7:43iniquity. And those who repent from their
- 7:48iniquity respond with humility. And what Jesus says goes against
- 7:59everything we believe. If you want to inherit the
- 8:03world, you're, you're the aggressor.
- 8:07If you want to rule the world, you, you are the powerful one,
- 8:11you're the rich one, you're the strong one.
- 8:15You're the one who overrides everyone else.
- 8:19So we think, try to tell Aceo that his greatest quality will
- 8:24be meekness and he will laugh at you because that's just unheard
- 8:30of. But in God's Kingdom, those who
- 8:36understand meekness are the ones who inherit the earth.
- 8:44In fact, Jesus said this way. All you that are heavy laden
- 8:50come to me, I will give you rest for I am meek and lowly in
- 8:57hearts. He He opens the door for us to
- 9:01see the inner workings of the of the Messiah.
- 9:07He is meek and he is lowly at heart.
- 9:14This was a a a difficult pill for the nation of Israel to
- 9:19swallow because of Jesus is their Messiah, which he claims
- 9:25to be and and he is. Their perception of the Messiah
- 9:30is different than than meekness, it's strength, it's power and
- 9:39they would they would begin to think in the Jewish mind.
- 9:44These verses about the Messiah Daniel 7 verse 13 Well Daniel
- 9:51says, I kept looking in the night visions, and behold with
- 9:54the clouds of heaven. 1 Like a son of man was coming, and he
- 9:57came up to the ancient of days and presented him, or presented
- 10:01before him. And to him was given dominion
- 10:04and glory in a Kingdom that all the peoples, nations, and men of
- 10:08every language might serve him. His dominion is an everlasting
- 10:12dominion which will not pass away, and his Kingdom is 1 which
- 10:16will not be destroyed. They think of the Messiah, which
- 10:21is a very, very familiar passage to Jews, that this is the the
- 10:27coming of the Messiah. He rules and reign with power
- 10:31and dominion. And then they would think of
- 10:35those very familiar words. And Isaiah Chapter 9, verse #6
- 10:40For a child will be born to us, and the Son will be given to us,
- 10:44and the government will rest on his shoulders.
- 10:48This name will be called wonderful Counselor, mighty God,
- 10:51eternal Father, Prince of Peace, And there will be no end to the
- 10:54increase of His government or of peace on the throne of David and
- 11:00over His Kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice
- 11:03and righteousness from then on and forever more.
- 11:07The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
- 11:14They're thinking of their Messiah and understanding that
- 11:17when He comes, He rules over all.
- 11:22And then they would be drawn to Malachi chapter 4 verse #1 For
- 11:26behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, and all
- 11:29the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaffed, and the day
- 11:32that it is coming will set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts.
- 11:37So that will leave them neither root nor branch.
- 11:41But for you who fear my name, the Son of righteousness will
- 11:44rise with healing in its wings, and you will go forth and skip
- 11:48about like calves from the stall.
- 11:50You will tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under
- 11:53your the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing,
- 11:56says the Lord of hosts. And they would think that here
- 12:00is the Lord who comes and he tramples everyone down, and he
- 12:04rules over all, and he is strong and mighty, and the dominion is
- 12:08his. That's what they're thinking
- 12:10about the Messiah. And Jesus comes and says,
- 12:14blessed are those who are poor, for I give them my Kingdom.
- 12:21Blessed are those who who mourn they and they only will be
- 12:26comforted and, and blessed are the meek for the earth is
- 12:32theirs. There's and and there's only, no
- 12:35one else's. And this was completely shocking
- 12:40to a, to a Jewish mindset. And so all, all throughout the
- 12:45ministry, they would hear words like Jesus saying, I've come to
- 12:48preach the gospel to the poor. I've come to preach the gospel
- 12:53as I look forward to those who are oppressed.
- 12:56And Israel saw themselves as oppressed, but not because of
- 13:00their iniquity, but because of their their enemy, Rome.
- 13:04They were under the oppression of Rome.
- 13:05And so if the Messiah comes, he is going to relieve their
- 13:10oppression. He will release them from their
- 13:14imprisonment. And they think, they're thinking
- 13:16their imprisonment is Rome, that Rome is is hovering over them
- 13:20and ruling over them. And they can be set free from
- 13:23that, not knowing that they are enslaved to their sin.
- 13:28They did not understand the arrival of the Messiah, even
- 13:32even at the end of his ministry. Remember Matthew chapter 21 it
- 13:37says when they had approached Jerusalem, Matthew chapter 21
- 13:41verse #1 and had come to Bethpage at the Mount of Olives.
- 13:45Then Jesus said two disciples saying to them, go to the
- 13:48village opposite you, and immediately you will find a
- 13:51donkey tied there in a colt with her.
- 13:55Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you,
- 13:59you shall say the Lord has need of them, and immediately He will
- 14:04send them. This took place to fulfill what
- 14:08was spoken through the prophet and he quotes Zechariah 9 verse
- 14:13#9 say to the daughter of Zion, behold, your king is coming to
- 14:18you meek and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the full
- 14:26of a beast of burden. They would know Zechariah 9.
- 14:33They would understand that and they would try to, to connect
- 14:38the dots of how it is that the, the Son of Man 1 like a Son of
- 14:42man would come and come up to the ancient of days, that he
- 14:45would have received glory and power and the Kingdom.
- 14:49And, and it's the, the, the power of the Lord of hosts that
- 14:53caused him to accomplish these kinds of things.
- 14:56And and then they would read that, that the Messiah would
- 14:59come on the backside of a donkey instead of a, a Persian steed
- 15:05instead of a, a, a white stallion.
- 15:07He comes on the backside of a of a donkey.
- 15:12And yet, and yet disciples went and did just as Jesus had
- 15:18instructed them and brought the donkey in the colt and laid
- 15:22their coats on them. And he sat on their coats for
- 15:25Satan. Most of the crowd spread their
- 15:27coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the
- 15:31trees and spreading them in the road.
- 15:34The crowds going ahead of him and those who followed were
- 15:37shouting Hosanna to the Son of David.
- 15:40Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 15:43Hosanna. Excuse me, Hosanna in the
- 15:47highest. Now you have to understand that
- 15:51here is Christ and he's making his way up to Jerusalem.
- 15:55It's Passover time and there are thousands upon thousands of
- 15:59people moving toward Jerusalem, and he's making his way up
- 16:04through Jericho, healing 2 blind men in Jericho, and the crowds
- 16:08begin to swell beyond number. And so they're following him
- 16:12into Jerusalem, while the crowds in Jerusalem are already there.
- 16:18And here comes Jesus fulfillment of Zechariah 99 and they see him
- 16:24coming and they begin to take off their their coats and, and
- 16:27lay them down in front of this beast of burden, this, this
- 16:32donkey. Why?
- 16:33Because they are saying, I'm giving all I have to you.
- 16:37You're in charge, you're the king.
- 16:41Others were taking branches and, and and waving them and laying
- 16:44them down. And that's why, that's why the
- 16:46Pharisees were so upset because of Passover.
- 16:49You don't cut down the branches and wave them.
- 16:51You do that at the Feast of Tabernacles, not at Passover.
- 16:56And the Pharisees knew that if they're doing this, they're
- 17:00doing it because they believe that their Messiah is coming.
- 17:04And if the Messiah is coming and they don't think he is, we got a
- 17:08major problem. Thus says the religious
- 17:11establishment. And so they believe in some
- 17:18small way that this is their Messiah.
- 17:22And then over in Luke's Luke's comment on this, he says the
- 17:28whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully
- 17:31with a loud voice because of his miracles, not because of his
- 17:35message. His message was blessed are the
- 17:38poor, blessed are those who mourn.
- 17:41Blessed are the are the meek and the and the hungry and the
- 17:46peacemakers and the pure heart. But they didn't listen to that.
- 17:55It was it was the the miracles that got them excited.
- 18:03And they've said blessed is the king who comes in the name of
- 18:06the Lord, peace in heaven and glory in the highest.
- 18:08They even quote the Bible. They quote Psalm 110 and Psalm
- 18:1240, both Messianic Psalms, saying that Jesus is the
- 18:17Messiah, is the king, and Jesus goes into Jerusalem and he weeps
- 18:22over Jerusalem because he says, if you had known for on this day
- 18:30what I was here for, oh, I would have gathered you together, but
- 18:36you weren't willing. You did not recognize the day of
- 18:39your visitation and they should have recognized the day of his
- 18:46visitation because it was the exact day 173,880 days as
- 18:55prophesied by Daniel and Daniel 924 to 27.
- 18:59They should have known, but they missed it because they they
- 19:05believed in the dominion and power of the Messiah.
- 19:10And Jesus turns around and goes back to Bethany, comes back to
- 19:12the next day and cleanses the temple.
- 19:16Instead of setting up his Kingdom, instead of overthrowing
- 19:19Rome, he turns over the the tables in the temple.
- 19:25They are extremely confused. So confused that three days
- 19:29later they yell, crucify him, crucify him.
- 19:36See, the Messiah didn't come to be crowned, He came to be
- 19:40crucified. He didn't come to be exalted.
- 19:47He came to be humiliated. That's why he came.
- 19:52He came to die and they missed it all.
- 19:58So Jesus comes along early on in his ministry.
- 20:03He is paving the way to the end. He's helping them to understand
- 20:10He's the king. I want you to be children of My
- 20:14Kingdom. To do so, you must understand
- 20:17how to enter the Kingdom and how to grow up in the Kingdom.
- 20:23It begins with poverty of spirit.
- 20:26The moon moves to mourning over your sin.
- 20:30Then it moves to meekness. But with all that comes
- 20:35blessedness comes true joy comes happiness on the inside, a joy
- 20:44that's unaffected by anything on the outside because you're right
- 20:48with God on the inside and that's all that matters.
- 20:54And so he says, blessed are the meek.
- 20:59So hopefully you picked up an outline and you're able to
- 21:01follow us tonight because the outline is the same as it has
- 21:04been the last two weeks, and we'll be the same.
- 21:07As we go through the beatitudes #1 we will make sure that we
- 21:11define the condition for you, describe the consequences,
- 21:15detail the characteristics, and then determine our course.
- 21:21Follow this through with me, if you will.
- 21:24What meekness is not and what meekness is.
- 21:30So many times we equate meekness with weakness, meekness with
- 21:36shyness, meekness with spinelessness, meekness with
- 21:44mere niceness. We we really have a hard time
- 21:51defining meekness. But just let me give you just a
- 21:55real simple illustration. The Bible says there's a man who
- 22:02was the meekest man on the face of the earth.
- 22:05That's Numbers 12 verse #3 Moses writes the Pentateuch under the
- 22:13inspiration of God. He says that he himself is the
- 22:18meekest man on the face of the earth.
- 22:23And so think of Moses as the essence of meekness in the Old
- 22:27Testament. And Moses was the one who who
- 22:32slew an Egyptian as the the meekest man on the face of the
- 22:37earth. He was the one who coming down
- 22:42from Mount Sinai with the the tablets, the 10 commandments
- 22:46written in stone by the finger of God, coming down only to see
- 22:51and hear the idolatry of the people of God.
- 22:56So the meekest man on the face of the earth takes the stones
- 23:01and throws him down to the ground and crushes them, and
- 23:06then he takes the molten calf that they had made as a symbol
- 23:12of their God that they would worship.
- 23:15He melted it down, let it dry, pounded it into dust, threw the
- 23:20dust into the water, and then made Israel drink the water.
- 23:26That is the meekest man on the face of the earth.
- 23:31That's just amazing because we don't understand meekness.
- 23:37Meekness is one who has all the power, but all that power is
- 23:43completely under control. It's a It's another word for
- 23:49being self controlled. Think of it this way.
- 23:57William Barkley says in his commentary on On the Beatitudes
- 24:02that meekness is a word with caress in it.
- 24:08And Colin Brown in his commentary in the New Testament
- 24:11says it's a word used to describe tame animals.
- 24:17A soothing medicine, a mild word, a gentle breeze.
- 24:24In other words, it implies self-control.
- 24:26Think about it, a gentle breeze. We, we love to to sit on the
- 24:30beach and, and have a have a gentle breeze or in the backyard
- 24:34and feel a gentle breeze. But if the wind is out of
- 24:40control, that gentle breeze becomes a hurricane, right?
- 24:47We love domesticated horses because they do what we tell
- 24:51them to do. They ride smooth and and quick.
- 24:56But an undomesticated horse is a wild horse and runs all over the
- 25:03place. Medicine is good if you take the
- 25:07dosage that the doctor gives to you, but if you overdose on the
- 25:12medicine, it can be deadly. You see, the essence of meekness
- 25:17is that it is power that is completely tamed and under
- 25:22control. And that's why our Lord would
- 25:25say that He has all the power in all the world, and yet He is the
- 25:29meekest because He is lowly and He wants you to come to Him
- 25:34because only He can do what no one else can do.
- 25:40That's so important to understand.
- 25:43Proverbs 1632 says he that is slow to anger is better than the
- 25:47mighty, and he ruleth that ruleth the spirit, than he that
- 25:53taketh a city. That's self-control.
- 25:57That's power under control. Point #2 Let's let's describe
- 26:04the consequences for today and for tomorrow, for today.
- 26:08There there is guidance for today there is blessing, for for
- 26:12today there is joy for today there is salvation.
- 26:17Listen to what the Old Testament says.
- 26:20It says in Proverbs 2226 The meek shall eat and be satisfied.
- 26:27Proverbs 25 verse #9 The meek will he guide injustice, and the
- 26:31meek will he teach his ways. Psalm 147 verse #6 The Lord
- 26:36lifts up the meek. Isaiah 2919.
- 26:42The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord.
- 26:49Think of it this way, the rich and the powerful never have
- 26:52enough. They never get enough.
- 26:55But the meek don't fight for that because they know in the
- 27:00end it's all going to be theirs anyway because they inherit the
- 27:05earth. So they're not worrying about
- 27:08what they don't have today or tomorrow because everything that
- 27:12the unbelieving world has is theirs That anyway because they
- 27:18along with the Lord inherit the earth.
- 27:25But tomorrow, tomorrow there's a, a ruling and reigning on this
- 27:31earth with the king. And over in Psalm, Psalm 37, the
- 27:39psalmist says this, which is so unique, he says in verse #9 for
- 27:43evildoers will be cut off. But those who wait for the Lord,
- 27:46they will inherit the land. That the meek person is one who
- 27:50who waits and and trusts because he is, he is patient for what
- 27:56God's going to do. And that person inherits the
- 27:58land, verse 11. But the humble will inherit the
- 28:01land, verse 18. The Lord knows the days of the
- 28:04blameless, and their inheritance will be forever.
- 28:08Verse 22. For those blessed by Him will
- 28:11again inherit the land. Verse 29.
- 28:14The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.
- 28:17Verse 34. Wait for the Lord and keep His
- 28:19way, and He will exalt you to inherit the land.
- 28:27There's coming today because we are heirs of God and joint heirs
- 28:32with Christ. And in Psalm 2, the psalmist
- 28:38says this in verse #8 ask of me, and I will surely give you the
- 28:43nation's for your inheritance and the very ends of the earth
- 28:48as your possession. That's God speaking to the
- 28:52Messiah. And because we're joining us
- 28:55with Christ, what He receives, we receive, and therefore the
- 29:03earth is his and the fullness thereof.
- 29:06And one day, according to the Book of Revelation, we will rule
- 29:10and reign with Christ as he sits on the throne of his Father
- 29:13David in Jerusalem. And we will reign over the land
- 29:18because we would have inherited the earth.
- 29:23But let me, let me try to describe for you the
- 29:26characteristics. Now follow very carefully.
- 29:32They're they're in your notes. 1 builds upon the other.
- 29:36The characteristics of the meek person is allegiance,
- 29:40benevolence, confidence, deference or preference,
- 29:48defense, and in essence, patience and obedience.
- 29:56Let me begin this way. Characteristic #1 is that those
- 30:02who are meek have an allegiance to God's sovereignty.
- 30:08If I had time, I could take you back to the book of Genesis and
- 30:11talk to you about the man Joseph.
- 30:14Joseph rose to a level of prominence in Egypt unlike any
- 30:17other person ever. And as he rose to a level of
- 30:22prominence, he became basically the Prime Minister of Egypt.
- 30:27And he had the opportunity to take care of Potiphar's wife,
- 30:31who had lied about him, but he chose not to.
- 30:35And when his brothers came to Egypt because they were starving
- 30:39and hungry and didn't recognize Joseph, he could have refused to
- 30:43give them food, but he didn't. He gave them food, and now he
- 30:49did. He give him food.
- 30:50He forgave them for what they did to him, while he had it in
- 30:54his power to destroy them. As the Prime Minister of Egypt.
- 31:00That is the essence of meekness. He had the power to destroy
- 31:06them. Meekness is always seen not when
- 31:09you do that which is wrong, but when you do that which is right.
- 31:15Because in doing that which is right and you're not in the
- 31:19wrong, you had the power to destroy those who are in the
- 31:23wrong, but you choose not to. Why?
- 31:26Because your allegiance is to God's sovereignty.
- 31:30And Joseph knew about the sovereign work of God in his
- 31:34life, how God had moved specifically in every aspect of
- 31:38his life to move him to where he was.
- 31:40So much so that at the end he could say you meant it for evil,
- 31:43but God meant it for good, because God's sovereignty is
- 31:46ruling over all. And because of that, two nations
- 31:49were saved, both Egypt and Israel.
- 31:54So the first characteristic is allegiance to God's sovereignty.
- 32:00The second characteristic is benevolence toward your enemy.
- 32:06Benevolence towards your enemy. You had the power to destroy
- 32:09them, but instead you show them kindness and goodness.
- 32:13In the illustration. For this is David, King David.
- 32:16He was anointed king over Israel and for over a decade Saul was
- 32:20so angry with him and hated him so much and tried to kill him.
- 32:24And when David had the opportunity to kill Saul, even
- 32:28though he was already anointed king of Israel, he did not kill
- 32:34Saul but spared his life. He was in complete control.
- 32:40He had the power as king of Israel already been anointed and
- 32:45Saul had already been rejected as king and but yet he, because
- 32:50of his allegiance to God's sovereignty, then would
- 32:54demonstrate his benevolence toward his enemy.
- 32:57That's exactly what he did even with Shemi.
- 33:01Remember that in, I think it's second Samuel when he was going
- 33:05along the, the, the hillside and throwing stones at David and
- 33:09cursing to David and Abishai said, Hey, let me go up there
- 33:12and cut off his head. And David said, no, no, let it
- 33:16go. If he's doing this, it's
- 33:18probably because God told him to do so.
- 33:21And David was the king and David could have had him executed, but
- 33:26he did not. He had the power to, but because
- 33:31of his allegiance to God's sovereignty, he could show
- 33:35benevolence toward his enemy. And those who show benevolence
- 33:40toward their enemy do so because they have confidence in the
- 33:45Almighty. And that was the apostle Paul.
- 33:50That's why he said, I can do all things through Christ who
- 33:53strengthens me. And the apostle Paul was the one
- 33:58who said we put no confidence in the flesh.
- 34:02Why? Because all of our confidence is
- 34:04in the Almighty God, and that's what the meek person does.
- 34:09And Paul is a perfect example of that.
- 34:11So the person who has allegiance to God's sovereignty shows
- 34:15benevolence toward his enemy because he has confidence in the
- 34:19Almighty. And those who have confidence in
- 34:22the Almighty show deference within their family, whether it
- 34:30be their personal family or their church family.
- 34:35In the illustration of this is Abraham.
- 34:38Remember in Genesis when lots herdsmen and and Abraham's
- 34:43herdsmen had this great fight that would break out and so they
- 34:48knew that they had to separate. So what did Abraham do?
- 34:50Abraham's the the father who received the promise.
- 34:53He knew what the land. The land was his.
- 34:57The promised land was was Abraham's.
- 34:59It was given to him. Not to lot, but lots.
- 35:03But but Abraham says a lot. You choose which way you want to
- 35:06go. You want to go right, I'll go
- 35:08left. You want to go left?
- 35:10I'll go right. You want to go north, I'll go
- 35:12South. You want to go South, I'll go
- 35:14north. Choose the way you want to go.
- 35:16So what a lot choose. He chose the lush green area,
- 35:22the best area, and Abraham let him, although it was Abraham's.
- 35:29Why? Because he showed deference and
- 35:32preference in his family. What does Paul say in Romans
- 35:38chapter 12? He says give preference to one
- 35:42another in honor. That's within the church.
- 35:48You see, we need more of that in the church, don't we?
- 35:51We need meek people in the church who are willing to give
- 35:55preference to others, give honor to others, to lift up others.
- 35:59Why? Because they understand that
- 36:02within their family they want to lift others up above them,
- 36:06whether it's their personal family or their church family,
- 36:08because they do have confidence in the Almighty.
- 36:11Therefore, they want to show benevolence even toward their
- 36:14enemy because they have an allegiance towards God's
- 36:17sovereignty. That's the characteristic of
- 36:20those who are meek. And then, of course, there's the
- 36:26defense of your authority. That is, those who are meek are
- 36:33always willing to defend their God and defend the truth of the
- 36:38Word of God. And that is how Moses lived his
- 36:42life, how Paul lived his life, always standing strong in the
- 36:47truth, always defending his God, fighting the good fight of the
- 36:52faith, always living in defense of their great and grand
- 36:57authority, never living in defense of themselves, but
- 37:03always in their God. And of course, in essence, make
- 37:10people show patience and they are the ones who demonstrate
- 37:19obedience, and that's Christ. Christ himself was completely
- 37:24obedient to his Father, even though he is ridiculed, even
- 37:28though he was spat upon, even though he was mocked and he had
- 37:31the power to destroy, even as he hung on the cross, and he could
- 37:35have called legions of angels to come and save him.
- 37:38He did not. Instead he said, Father forgive
- 37:41them, for they know not what they do.
- 37:45And Peter, when he denied him, what did he do?
- 37:46He restored him. He restored him because that's
- 37:50what make people do. They give preference to others,
- 37:55they minister to others. And Christ live a life of
- 37:59obedience to His Father, always wanting to do the will of His
- 38:04Father in heaven, simply because He lived out the meek and quiet
- 38:10spirit. How about you?
- 38:14What characterizes your daily life?
- 38:18Are you the kind of person who, when you have the power to
- 38:21destroy, or you have the power for revenge, or you have the
- 38:26power to conquer, it's all under your authority.
- 38:31You choose not to because you want to demonstrate kindness,
- 38:36goodness, and gentleness. So lastly, what's, what's our
- 38:42course of action? How do we explain that?
- 38:45Let me, let me give you a few principles #1 is understand that
- 38:50meekness. Realize, realize it's a gift.
- 38:53Do you understand that Galatians chapter 5, the fruit of the
- 38:59Spirit is meekness, gentleness. It's a gift of God.
- 39:06Second Peter 14, we are partakers of the divine nature.
- 39:09As a child of God, you're a partaker of God's divine nature.
- 39:15And God's nature is that he's meek and lowly.
- 39:17So you become a part of that. His nature is in you.
- 39:22You now automatically have the opportunity to live a meek and
- 39:29quiet life. So important, but you got to #1
- 39:34realize it's a gift from God and then #2 resolve to pursue
- 39:43meekness. Listen to what Paul says in
- 39:48first Timothy chapter 6, verse 11.
- 39:51But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue
- 39:55righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and
- 40:00meekness. Meekness is not only gift, but
- 40:05meekness is something that we are to pursue constantly.
- 40:11And then over in Second Timothy chapter 2 verse #24 Paul says
- 40:18the Lord's bond servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to
- 40:21all, able to teach patient went wronged, and with meekness
- 40:27correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God might
- 40:34grant them repentance. Wow.
- 40:38So not only do we realize that meekness truly is a gift from
- 40:43God, but we also need to understand that we are to to
- 40:47seek meekness. We are to pursue meekness and
- 40:52then #3 understand this. Oh by the way, Zephaniah 2-3
- 40:58says seek meekness and then we should always respond humbly to
- 41:07scripture. Make people do that.
- 41:12Listen to James chapter 1 verse #19 this you know my beloved
- 41:19brethren, but everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak,
- 41:21and slow to anger. For the anger of man does not
- 41:23achieve the righteousness of God.
- 41:25Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains
- 41:29of wickedness, in meekness receive the word implanted,
- 41:36which is able to save your souls.
- 41:39In other words, we are the kind of people who respond humbly to
- 41:45the Scriptures. That's what meek people do.
- 41:48They hear the Word of God and they respond in humility because
- 41:54they recognize that the all powerful God of the universe who
- 41:59could destroy them in a moment, His mercies are new every
- 42:03morning, and that His grace is sufficient for every situation.
- 42:09And then and then #4 Meek people receive criticism.
- 42:22Well, meek people receive criticism.
- 42:29Well, look at Titus chapter 3. Remind them verse #1 to be
- 42:37subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to
- 42:40be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be peaceable,
- 42:45meek, showing consideration for all men.
- 42:51For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient,
- 42:55deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending
- 43:00our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.
- 43:04But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind
- 43:07appeared, He saved us not on the basis of our deeds which we have
- 43:13done in righteousness, but according to His mercy by the
- 43:17washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit we
- 43:21poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.
- 43:27We we are to respond to the authorities, those who are over
- 43:34you, whether they're in your workplace or whether they're in
- 43:41the government or whether they're in your family, with an
- 43:45attitude of meekness. And then note this over in first
- 43:52Peter, First Peter chapter 3 verse #4 Peter says this about
- 44:05women who are married to unsaved men, says, yet your your
- 44:10adornment, adornment, excuse me, must not be merely external.
- 44:14Braiding of the hair and wearing gold jewelry or putting on
- 44:18dresses. It's not that it can't be
- 44:21external. It just must not be merely
- 44:24external. But let it be the hidden person
- 44:27of the heart with the imperishable quality of a meek
- 44:34and quiet spirit which is precious in the sight of God.
- 44:42Wow. So many times as women who are
- 44:48married to unbelievers or yet who are married to unbelievers,
- 44:50receive all kinds of criticism because of what they do or don't
- 44:56do. Or if they go to church, or they
- 44:58want to raise their kids in the ways of God and their husbands
- 45:02criticize them and malign them, They are to respond with
- 45:06meekness and in gentleness because this is precious in the
- 45:13sight of the Lord. Realize that meekness is a gift.
- 45:21Resolve to pursue meekness, Respond humbly to the
- 45:25Scriptures, receive criticism well, and restore a brother who
- 45:36sins. Galatians chapter 6 verse #1
- 45:44Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who
- 45:48are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of meekness, each
- 45:55one looking to yourself so that you too will not be tempted.
- 46:03Meet people, restore sinning, brothers and sisters, and they
- 46:09do it in the spirit of meekness. And one more I added it right
- 46:19before the service, and that is meek people react by walking
- 46:29worthy. Ephesians chapter 4, verse #1
- 46:36Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a
- 46:40manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
- 46:44with all, with all meekness and gentleness, with patience,
- 46:54showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent
- 47:00to preserve the unity of the Spirit, the bond of peace.
- 47:05Meet people, spend their energy maintaining the peace that we
- 47:15have in the body of Christ. And they do it because they
- 47:20prefer others more important than themselves.
- 47:25They do it because they trust in the sovereignty of God that
- 47:27rules over all. They do it because they know
- 47:31they have confidence in the Almighty God to accomplish His
- 47:34purposes, that they can sit back and rest and know that their God
- 47:39is in complete control. So Christ comes and he begins to
- 47:45preach. He begins to speak forth the
- 47:49truth of the Word of God, helping people understand that
- 47:53that entrance into my Kingdom comes because of poverty of
- 47:57spirit, complete spiritual bankruptcy.
- 48:01You have nothing to give me. You have nothing to earn my
- 48:05favor. You have nothing that will cause
- 48:07me to love you. You can't get God to love you.
- 48:12God is a lover of mankind. God so loved the world that He
- 48:17gave His only begotten Son. You can't affect the love of God
- 48:22by anything that you do, but it's the poverty of spirit, the
- 48:26recognition that I have nothing to give you, that causes me to
- 48:30cry out and mourn over my sin, recognizing that I'm separated
- 48:35from you. And then understand that the
- 48:41meek will inherit the earth. All foreign to a Jewish mind.
- 48:49Foreign basically even to our minds because we don't look at
- 48:53life the way Christ looks at it. But this is the way to true
- 48:57blessedness, true joy, true happiness, true gladness.
- 49:03It comes only God's way. It doesn't come my way or your
- 49:06way. It only comes God's way.
- 49:09And so therefore, you have to say, OK, am I going to submit to
- 49:12the sovereignty of God and follow his marching orders, or
- 49:15am I going to kick against the goads and, and, and continually
- 49:18fight against what God says? Or while I'm humility, receive
- 49:24with meekness the implanted word of God, which is able to save
- 49:28your soul. That's my prayer for you and my
- 49:32prayer for for me that that would be our attitude.
- 49:36Let's pray together. Father, we thank you for today
- 49:38and the opportunity you give us to praise your glorious name.
- 49:43Thank you, Lord, for your word. There's so much to unfold, so
- 49:47much to uncover, so much to study and so little time to do
- 49:51it. But yet you've given us this
- 49:53opportunity and we are grateful. We thank you, Lord, for that.
- 49:56We can spend some time in the middle of the week.
- 49:58It's like, it's like a refueling, It's a, it's like a
- 50:01refocusing. It's, it's like a redirecting of
- 50:05our lives to make sure we're in line, to make sure that we are
- 50:08truly following the word of the Lord.
- 50:11Oh, so often we need that reminder of what Your Word says.
- 50:17And my prayers for everyone in the room.
- 50:21My prayer is always for those that are in the room.
- 50:26They're here because in the sovereignty of Your plan, You
- 50:31brought them here. They're not here by accident.
- 50:36They're here by divine appointment.
- 50:38And therefore, Lord, you want to use Your word in their lives.
- 50:43So, Lord, if there's someone here tonight who's not born
- 50:45again, that you'd save them from their sin.
- 50:48For those who are, may they understand that they need to
- 50:51live like a child of the King, honoring the King, glorifying
- 50:56his name. For there is nothing better than
- 51:00to understand that we are citizens of the Kingdom of the
- 51:06living God. For that we thank you in Jesus
- 51:10name, Amen.
