- 0:04This Bible study tonight is filled with good news.
- 0:10And I'm excited to see that with you in this chapter.
- 0:13So if you're not with us on a regular basis, we are in the
- 0:16book of second, Samuel and we have been studying, it chapter
- 0:19by chapter verse by verse. So tonight we are actually in
- 0:22chapter, Which chapter Eight and nine so you're both kind of
- 0:26right but let's start in chapter 9 second, Samuel chapter 9.
- 0:34This is a meaningful text for many reasons, but it is
- 0:38especially remarkable for the New Covenant Christian.
- 0:42And the main reason for that is because in my personal opinion,
- 0:48this is perhaps one of the most powerful Old Testament
- 0:52illustrations in the life of David that portrays the message
- 0:58of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And it's and its fullness, like
- 1:02not just little hints here and there, but from beginning to
- 1:05end, you just see this consistent thread of the Gospel
- 1:08of Jesus, in this moment of David's life.
- 1:12And if you were to just have a quick read of the verses without
- 1:16Haitian. Even it would be very easy to
- 1:19discover themes that you and I enjoy in our Salvation in
- 1:25Christ. And you will see that.
- 1:27As we read through this text, the framework for that is
- 1:32David's interaction with a man by the name of what Yes, method
- 1:37bichette. I'm going to try to say that
- 1:39name because I'm going to say it a lot without my tongue twisting
- 1:42so please show Mercy to me. That is a framework in which
- 1:46we're going to see the wonderful realizations of the Gospel.
- 1:51Exhibited. But before we go there, you
- 1:54know, that last week, we came to second, Samuel chapter 8, and we
- 2:00looked at David's summary of the campaign's that he had in war
- 2:07and we stopped at a particular point.
- 2:10And we're going to revisit those verses because it will flow
- 2:16wonderfully into the main theme of The Gospel of chapter 9.
- 2:19And so before we start in one verse year, the first verse of
- 2:21chapter nine, let's go. Two verse 15 of chapter 8.
- 2:25And we're going to read these verses.
- 2:26The final three verses of chapter 8 and ask some important
- 2:31questions. Well, we thank you tonight.
- 2:34We are deeply grateful for the family of Christ who is
- 2:37gathering here on this Friday evening, when there are a
- 2:41thousand other things that we can do.
- 2:43And we know that there are a hundred different temptations
- 2:46that pull people into so many different directions to gratify
- 2:51the desires of the flesh. But oh God, we are grateful that
- 2:54these doors are open in your house that we can drink deeply
- 2:58from your word because your word is our ultimate Delight.
- 3:02We are are so grateful again for your majesty, your humility and
- 3:07your provision that is in your word today in Jesus name we
- 3:10pray. Amen.
- 3:13Second Samuel 8:15. So, David reigned over all
- 3:17Israel and David administered, Justice, and Equity to all his
- 3:21people. Joab.
- 3:23The son of Zechariah was over the Army and Jehoshaphat the son
- 3:27of a. He led was recorder and tzadik
- 3:30the son of a, he tub and a he Malik, the son of a bi far were
- 3:34priests and Soraya was secretary and Benaiah the son of jehoiada
- 3:40was over the Cara theit's and the pellet sites and David's
- 3:44Sons were priests Anything significant stands out here in
- 3:49this text because this is where we stopped last time and the
- 3:52snapshot that we have here of David's team teaches us in a
- 3:56very general sense that this man was not just a warrior who
- 4:01defended God's people. He was a leader who nurtured and
- 4:07managed God's people. Well, and he did so, by
- 4:11appointing eligible, subordinates to his
- 4:14administration he hand-selected Certain men who had skills that
- 4:20would be able to help him govern the nation and we can look at
- 4:25for the next 15-20 minutes, the value and the principles, and
- 4:28the importance of order and different qualifications for the
- 4:32house of God today. But we're not going to do that
- 4:34instead just from overview. Look at some details that you
- 4:40think might be helpful in understanding.
- 4:42The totality of God's word concerning God's character and
- 4:45his Redemptive plan. Yeah.
- 4:46Joshua very good observation. Did you guys hear Joshua?
- 5:00You notice the last few words of the last verse David's.
- 5:04Sons were priests and we will come to that in a moment.
- 5:07That's a very good observation. Josh, anything else.
- 5:20They want to kill salt. Okay, is there anybody in
- 5:23particular that stands out to you?
- 5:30Job was always David's man to go but go ahead.
- 5:35You might be confusing them with somebody else which is okay.
- 5:38Because when it comes to biblical names it's kind of
- 5:40difficult to track one or the other.
- 5:41But if you aren't to something, try to find that name and let me
- 5:44know if that is the case. Anything else?
- 5:50Look at verse 16. Rather verse 17 exotic.
- 5:55The son of a. He tub and I he may like the son
- 5:57of a Bea Arthur were priests. Why is that interesting?
- 6:03They were not just ordinary priest, they were Chief priests.
- 6:07They actually in a joint fashion occupied, the high Priestly role
- 6:15And so why should that interests us?
- 6:21Come on Old Testament, students. You should know this.
- 6:24Why is that interesting? Why is it concerning?
- 6:32How many people can become high priest?
- 6:36One, how many people that we just read?
- 6:38Okay, something's off here. We have two people named who are
- 6:44occupying the same role. Now, why is that the case?
- 6:52Does anybody have an idea? Sure, but when we go to
- 6:57Chronicles, we realize that they do actually occupy.
- 7:00Those Priestly roles, the chief Priestly roles and there is a
- 7:03reason for that. Okay, you're on to something.
- 7:13If you really want to look at the text that explains what I'm
- 7:15about to say, you go to 1st chronicles, 16?
- 7:18Verse 39 actually could backtrack to verse 37 to 39.
- 7:22I'm not going to turn there, you can reference that later.
- 7:25But the reason why we have two people here who are joined
- 7:30together in some sense, sharing the responsibility of one high
- 7:33priest is because we are in an interesting predicament
- 7:37concerning the house of worship. When David brought the ark to
- 7:42Jerusalem, did he bring the whole Tabernacle?
- 7:48No, he just brought the ark and David pitched, a unique tent for
- 7:53that Arc while the remaining Furnishing, resided in gibeon.
- 8:00and so, what you have here is David strategically Allowing one
- 8:05priest to supervise the arc while you had another priest who
- 8:10is administrating, the levitical duties back where the rest of
- 8:13the Furnishings were this is not speculation, you know.
- 8:17I'm a big man. You guys are looking at me, like
- 8:19I'm saying something that's not true.
- 8:20So let's go to 1st chronicles. 16 is I know it sounds stunning
- 8:25but put your seatbelts on its going to get crazier as we go
- 8:29on. So if you're a first chronicles
- 8:3216 verse 37, we have a parallel passage and notice what we are
- 8:36told here. So David left a saphenous
- 8:44Brothers there before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord to
- 8:47minister regularly before the ark.
- 8:49As each day required, you see that that come to verse 39 and
- 8:54he left zadok and the priest and his brothers, the priest before
- 8:57the Tabernacle of the Lord in the high place that was at
- 9:02gibeon to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, on the altar of the
- 9:04burnt offering regularly morning, and eating to do, all
- 9:07that is written in the law of the Lord, that he commanded
- 9:09Israel. So you have one priest in
- 9:12Jerusalem. You have another priest in
- 9:15gibeon, that's why this is happening.
- 9:18And so there's some, there's some Grace here to extend, but
- 9:22perhaps we have never thought about this before.
- 9:24This predicament here. This occurrence is somewhat of a
- 9:30unique parallel to the ministry and life of Jesus.
- 9:32Any idea how think about the Priestly situation during or
- 9:43right before Jesus public Ministry was announced.
- 9:49What was the clergy like? Among the Jews was it an order?
- 9:57Okay, so Luke chapter 3, go to verse 2, and then you're going
- 10:01to see somewhat of a foreshadowing here in second
- 10:04Samuel 8. It's just a little nudge, but
- 10:07I'll take all that I can get about anything in the Old
- 10:09Testament that might point to Jesus in Luke chapter 3, verse
- 10:142, after giving us a description of the political scene in Jesus
- 10:18day, we get a description of the spiritual leadership of Jesus
- 10:22day. And what are we read in verse to
- 10:24Luke 3 during the high priesthood?
- 10:27I'm expecting to read one name. During the high priesthood of
- 10:32Anna's and Caiaphas. The word of God came to John the
- 10:37son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
- 10:39How many people are supposed to occupy, the high Priestly role?
- 10:42How many did you just read interesting?
- 10:46Now, this is going to be solved once Solomon becomes king and he
- 10:50succeeds his father. Because we see here that hey,
- 10:54Malik is actually going to be exiled because he's going to try
- 10:56to help adonijah occupy the throne when they belong to
- 11:01Solomon. So that's going to be solved but
- 11:03David allows it to happen at this point and I just find it.
- 11:06So interesting that during the life of Jesus, the son of David.
- 11:09He also not only had to deal with a very corrupt political
- 11:12realm. He also had to deal with a very
- 11:16Contorted, spiritual leadership that had all kinds of things
- 11:20going on and that he confronted boldly.
- 11:23Now if we think that is interesting, we come down to
- 11:26what Joshua mentioned. In verse 18 David's Sons were
- 11:31priests who here has a translation other than the ESV
- 11:34just lift your hand. I'm curious, one, two, three,
- 11:37four. Okay, maybe like six seven
- 11:38people, this is your translation, say priests, which
- 11:42translation do you have? It says priest, which
- 11:46translation says Chief rulers. Anybody have Chief rulers.
- 11:51And the King James will say Chief rulers.
- 11:53Yeah. And he has to be anybody of the
- 11:55nasb. So what you have I'm I'm
- 12:00actually surprised that the new King James has priests because
- 12:04some of those new King James translation is actually have
- 12:06Chief rulers of Chief Minister's right.
- 12:17First Chronicles, 18:17, right? Yeah.
- 12:19We'll get to that in a moment. Why is it fascinating for us
- 12:25that the ESV would use the word priests to describe?
- 12:28David's Sons. The suns were from the tribe of
- 12:34one. And that is a prerogative.
- 12:37The priesthood is a prerogative that solely belong to the sons
- 12:39of who Right, Aaron, who is a levite.
- 12:43And when you look at this, I think to myself, is there a
- 12:45mistake here? And if we thought that David
- 12:48having to high priest was irregular, it's only going to
- 12:50get more interesting. When we look at what we see
- 12:53before us, do you know why the ESV uses the word priests?
- 12:57It's because when you go to the original Hebrew word, it's
- 13:01actually and its primary definition and it's common usage
- 13:06throughout the Old Testament, the word for priests.
- 13:11And I'm under the persuasion that translators.
- 13:13When they came to this text were a little bit confused maybe or
- 13:18startled. And in order to avoid
- 13:21controversy found Liberty to broaden, the definition of a
- 13:27little bit to try to fix the apparent issue here, that David
- 13:32was walking in blatant, Defiance to the levitical code about the
- 13:37priesthood. And so, that's why in some of
- 13:40these translations, you see Chief rulers, Chief ministers,
- 13:44and our brother just point out while hold on.
- 13:46Here's an objection. When you go to the parallel
- 13:48passage in first, 18:17 what you're going to find is
- 13:54something that would confirm what those translations say,
- 13:56when they chose to use Chief rulers, Chief Minister's, we
- 14:00just heard it and First Chronicles 1817.
- 14:02It tells us and David's Sons were Chief officials in the
- 14:08service of the king in the King James.
- 14:10I was a Chiefs Now, that may end the argument, but it actually
- 14:16makes it more complicated and I'll tell you why.
- 14:19Because when you do a little digging into the Hebrew of the
- 14:22chief and the Chiefs here in first Chronicles 1817, it's a
- 14:27different word than the Hebrew word for priest in 2nd Samuel 8.
- 14:33the word for Chiefs and First Chronicles, 18:17 simply means
- 14:37primary Right, it speaks of being first, that's not what the
- 14:44Hebrew word here is for priest, and 2nd, Samuel 8.
- 14:51I believe that those who translated it this way and
- 14:54accepted the controversy to preserve.
- 14:56The purest, definition of the word, did the right thing and
- 14:59I'm glad they did. I'm glad they did, no
- 15:02translation is absolutely perfect but in this case I
- 15:05applaud the word priest being used because it's really isn't
- 15:09controversial. It isn't controversial for the
- 15:12student of the Old Testament who understands that the spirit of
- 15:17God has foretold of a coming priesthood.
- 15:24Namely one after who now Kenzi deck.
- 15:29When you see it with that lens, then you understand.
- 15:33This is something powerful. David had a revelation we touch
- 15:37on this and second, Samuel 6, in Psalms 110, he had a regular
- 15:41Revelation. That one of his descendants
- 15:43would not only be a king, he would be his Lord.
- 15:47Jesus used that Jesus used that against the Pharisees, when he
- 15:50said, how can David Son, also be his Lord.
- 15:54So there is a Divine element to his descendant.
- 15:58But more than that, when you go to verse 4 of Psalm, 110, what
- 16:01do you see you see this prophecy.
- 16:03You are priest forever. Ever After the order of
- 16:07Melchizedek so he's not just Lord over David.
- 16:11He's not just going to be a king occupying, the seat and the
- 16:14Throne of David. He's actually going to be what
- 16:17was so foreign to the law of Moses, this hybrid of priest and
- 16:21King. Priest and King that David had
- 16:25that Insight by the spirit of God.
- 16:27David, we are told, was not just a song as he was a prophet.
- 16:32New Testament tells us that. So as a prophet he receives this
- 16:36insight and I wonder if David in this moment because he had that
- 16:41Revelation initiated and delegated to his son's a unique
- 16:46role simply because he was responding to that Revelation
- 16:52and wanted to in some way prepare For this seed of his who
- 16:57would be both King and Priests. In other words, he's not doing
- 17:02this to try to obstruct the functioning of the levitical
- 17:05priesthood, and I don't even think David's Sons here were
- 17:08attempting to minister in the way that only the Levites could.
- 17:13I believe, David is just trying his best here to respond to what
- 17:16he was told about his seed, one of your son's.
- 17:19He's gonna be a king, but he's also going to be a priest.
- 17:24And what comforts me with that is that their arguments from
- 17:27silence or not, the best David has already done quite a few
- 17:31things that are very priest-like and God didn't rebuke him, God
- 17:34didn't send a prophet to correct them.
- 17:36God doesn't discipline him. God is silent about it.
- 17:40Even up to this point here. So what did David Sons do as
- 17:43priests? I'm not too sure.
- 17:45One thing I know is that he feared God enough not to allow
- 17:48his son to enter into the Tabernacle and assume levitical
- 17:51duties. So I don't know what it looks
- 17:54like. All I know is this is a
- 17:56wonderful wonderful proof that David really believed that his
- 18:02son would be a king and a priest.
- 18:05And so be encouraged by that. This is not a contradiction in
- 18:08your Bible. This is not something that the
- 18:10original writers got wrong. I believe they knew exactly what
- 18:13they were doing when they chose the word priest here because
- 18:15that's what really happened. Now, let's continue with the
- 18:19theme of Jesus. Jesus is going to dominate
- 18:22chapter 9, we come now to chapter 9 and we realize that
- 18:26David after so much success, everything being established has
- 18:32another thing set on his heart. At one point, he wanted to build
- 18:35something for God. And now he wants to do something
- 18:37for another person's house verse 1 and David said, is there still
- 18:43any one left of the House of Saul that?
- 18:45I may show him kindness for Jonathan's.
- 18:47Sake. This is what blows me away
- 18:52about. That one verse the fact that
- 18:54David has to inquire about any survivors from the house of Saul
- 18:59indicates. Clearly of the extent of the
- 19:03below that saw received from God for his sin, it almost brought
- 19:10him to near-extinction. His dynasty was almost over at
- 19:15an accelerating rate so much so that David actually had to send
- 19:21out. A search team to try to figure
- 19:23out if there are any sons of Saul left.
- 19:27And here is the lesson for us, you, and I must look at this and
- 19:33comprehend. The absolute severity of sin Sin
- 19:38in our lives is not interested in merely making.
- 19:42You feel shameful for a moment or just slightly harming you, it
- 19:47wants to devour you. It wants to corrupt everything.
- 19:52Good, in our lives, down to the core, like a pool of piranhas.
- 19:57You put anything in there. It will chew it down to the
- 20:00bone. I don't care what it is.
- 20:02It will sin will do that to your body sin will do that to your
- 20:07money. Sin will do that to your
- 20:10marriage. Sin will do it to society as a
- 20:12whole. It will bring it down to the
- 20:14point where all you have left is crumbs.
- 20:19Sometimes sin is so vicious and selfish, you'll take the crumbs
- 20:22as well. We see here that whatever you
- 20:25give unrestrained access to whatever you allow sin and
- 20:30whatever permission you give it into your life, it will do what
- 20:33it did with here with Saul. It will absolutely erode what it
- 20:36is to the point where it will be almost unrecognizable.
- 20:40If we really believe that we would be scared of it and we
- 20:43should be scared of sin. But on a positive note, you
- 20:46know, what David does, here we see something of his mercy and
- 20:49compassion that shines throughout this chapter notice
- 20:52what he says there. That I may show him what
- 20:54kindness can do. We didn't do what we usually do
- 20:57and that's read through the chapter before we discuss it.
- 21:00But the word kindness shows up a total of three times in this
- 21:03chapter that verse we just read. Now come down to verse 3.
- 21:08And the King said is they're not still somewhat of the House of
- 21:11Saul that I may show the kindness of God to him.
- 21:14I want to show the kindness of God to him and we scroll down
- 21:18what you will realize is that he says it another time he says it
- 21:22here in verse First seven. Correct.
- 21:29He says and David said them do not fear for I will show you
- 21:32kindness three times. Kindness kindness kindness.
- 21:35But do you notice verse 3? It's a particular kind of
- 21:37kindness which kind of kindness kindness of God.
- 21:41This is not just some moment of just sentimental, affection that
- 21:47he wants to act upon, there's a deep kindness that he wants to
- 21:51extend to the house of Saul. And so he's moved to do this.
- 21:56I believe this was in David's heart for many, many years ever
- 21:59since he made a covenant with Jonathan now is the time where I
- 22:02can extend kindness. And this timing is so important.
- 22:06Because what David is doing here is the exact opposite of what a
- 22:10king would do in that time. I'm when a king would arise and
- 22:13obtain power. One of his strategies would be
- 22:16to totally eradicate any competitors are potential
- 22:21threats from the preceding Dynasty.
- 22:24So that there would be no future Rebellion against his throne in
- 22:27Authority. David is literally doing what
- 22:30you would not want to do. If you are an Eastern king of
- 22:33his day. Which is astounding.
- 22:37And the kindness of God here is, is really the theme of the
- 22:40chapter? And here's what's so good,
- 22:43because what David is ready to plan and execute for Saul's
- 22:47house is what you and I understand and is magnified
- 22:51concerning Jesus, not just towards one family, but towards
- 22:55the family of Adam, the whole human race.
- 23:00And so, when you and I look at the features here and the
- 23:02details here and the acts of mercy here, look at it, in the
- 23:06lens of Jesus, the son of David and what he's willing to extend
- 23:12and what he's willing to offer to the most undeserving and so
- 23:15that's really what's going to dominate this Bible study and so
- 23:18as you and I come here we realized that kindness is the
- 23:21theme. Kindness is actually a word that
- 23:25the Holy Spirit uses when it talks about Jesus.
- 23:29When the Holy Spirit speaks about Jesus.
- 23:33He testifies of his kindness and there's many verses one of the
- 23:35ones that I memorize early on that.
- 23:37I hold close to my heart is Titus 3 4 because of the
- 23:41goodness and loving kindness of God, our savior appeared, the
- 23:48loving kindness. There's love behind that
- 23:52kindness. There is a heartbeat behind
- 23:54that. Kindness, it's not just a mere
- 23:57Duty, there's actual affection behind that kindness And the
- 24:02kindness though Titus speaks about in the past tense, it has
- 24:07appeared on the cross. It's not limited to this life.
- 24:10That kindness is only going to be realized in measures that you
- 24:15and I cannot comprehend for all of eternity.
- 24:19So let me read this to you in a fusions 27, this is glorious.
- 24:23So that in the coming ages, this is what Paul says in the coming
- 24:26ages Beyond this age, and the coming ages that we're
- 24:29anticipating, he might show the immeasurable Riches of his grace
- 24:35in kindness. Toward us in Christ Jesus.
- 24:40You know what? That tells me.
- 24:41The kindness of Jesus Christ will require an eternity to
- 24:46experience. If we thought that the cross was
- 24:52enough and it is the experience of that kindness is going to
- 24:58shower over us. And after we drank of it for
- 25:021,000 years, another 10,000 years will come and you and I
- 25:05will just go to higher levels of enjoying the kindness of God.
- 25:12So we think we're going up to heaven and and and the Lord is
- 25:15going to stand there on his throne by his throne and sit on
- 25:18his throne with his arms crossed.
- 25:19And okay. Now, for all the attorney show
- 25:20me your appreciate your appreciation.
- 25:22Okay, go No, no. In heaven.
- 25:25Not only are we going to cast our crowns at his feet but God
- 25:30is going to continue to overshadow us with his kindness
- 25:34and an experiential way. So we're not we're not having is
- 25:38not this neutral thing and it's foggy and hazy and we hear
- 25:41angels and we're going to sing with them from time to time.
- 25:44And after 300 years we can think.
- 25:45Is this? Is it?
- 25:46This is. What is there?
- 25:47Nothing else here? No, you will be Spellbound.
- 25:52As you realize that, once you've come to a measure of kindness
- 25:56that you never knew was possible, you're only going to
- 25:58be met with a greater measure of it over and over and over and
- 26:03over and over. And this is why argue for one of
- 26:06the reasons for a resurrected body, not just so that Jesus can
- 26:09claim victory over the whole man.
- 26:12That's why we believe your body, your body, your actual body will
- 26:15be resurrected. You're not going to get a new
- 26:17one, while the other one rots in the ground.
- 26:19That one that is rotting in the ground, will be called upon And
- 26:22it will be transformed so that Jesus can claim victory over sin
- 26:27even over your flesh. But it's not just for that.
- 26:31I believe that he's going to wire us in a certain way so that
- 26:33we can we can at least enjoy the kindness and not be destroyed by
- 26:38it if I can use that word. so that we can be vessels that
- 26:42receive that kindness and actually be able to be put
- 26:46together still We can stop here and worship.
- 26:53Now, we come to this text and what do we realize?
- 26:55The kindness of David which is really the kindness of God.
- 26:59Tell me what things stand out to just from verse one, just from
- 27:03verse one, what can you tell me about the kindness of God?
- 27:05What can you tell me here as you view it, and apply it to Jesus
- 27:09Christ. Is there anyone left of the
- 27:11House of Saul that? I may show him kindness for
- 27:13Jonathan sake. So that's he initiates it, his
- 27:23kindness is the as a type of kindness that is initiated by
- 27:27him. We'll get to that in a few
- 27:28verses but wonderful Point any other observations?
- 27:32Well, think about it, this way. I just mentioned it before.
- 27:34Yes, brother. What's the inspiration in the
- 27:50reason for David to show kindness to solve for Jonathan's
- 27:54sake? Do you hear that ring?
- 27:58Great, yes. Yes, Covenant, yes.
- 28:04Exactly. And so we have David here,
- 28:06honoring a covenant that he had made with Jonathan that he is
- 28:10now going to extend to his, his house your there?
- 28:14Yes, let's backtrack and let's go to a basic premise of the
- 28:19Gospel, is the house of Saud? Deserving of the kindness of
- 28:23David answer. No, the most undeserving
- 28:26actually the candidate that is least expected to receive any
- 28:30kindness from David. You heard one reason why and I
- 28:34think that suffice has as a reason, but when you come here
- 28:37and you realize it, You think to yourself This is scandalous.
- 28:44This is actually scandalous. This is foreign this, you don't
- 28:47do this as a king. This isn't wise, this isn't
- 28:50fair, this isn't strategy, but that's what Grace is.
- 28:54It doesn't make sense. It actually offends.
- 28:58The Bible says, the gospel is a gospel of offense.
- 29:03It just doesn't make sense to human reasoning to a certain
- 29:06degree that him doing all that for me though.
- 29:09I did all that to him, I must do something.
- 29:12That's where the offense comes in.
- 29:13I must do something to contribute to this, and that's
- 29:15where that's where people don't get saved, but we see here.
- 29:19That David is willing to come and reach out to the house of
- 29:23Saul, those saws, the most undeserving, and that's you.
- 29:26And I, as sinners, There's nothing about Saul that moves,
- 29:31David and in a sense that any good that he's done to say, you
- 29:33know, I think I should do something for you in return
- 29:36unmerited. And then we heard it because the
- 29:41real inspiration here is his, willingness is because of a
- 29:45coven that he made with one of check this word out, the
- 29:47representatives of the House of Saul was there anybody apart
- 29:52from Jonathan? That was worthy to receive.
- 29:54Mercy saw know, especially with he was a headache for seven
- 29:59years. Michal even she was another
- 30:03added headache headaches everywhere from the house of
- 30:05Saul. But there is one man in that
- 30:09house whom God, honored whom David honored.
- 30:14And they shared a special bond. They shared a special friendship
- 30:18and that friendship was so wonderful, so great.
- 30:22So promising, that that David was willing, just because of him
- 30:28to be able to reach out to those who are related to him that did
- 30:32not deserve, they were unworthy members.
- 30:35Of tasting, the mercy of this King.
- 30:39You understand it, right? He is Christ.
- 30:42He becomes our brother in the flesh.
- 30:44Hebrews tells us and because he identifies with our Humanity, he
- 30:50is now able to be our representative.
- 30:54But at the same time just like Jonathan he holds a special and
- 30:57unique relationship with God and because of that that wonderful
- 31:04status that Christ held being man.
- 31:07Yes but being truly God, Odd. He now can act as our
- 31:11representative of also, as our mediator And so in the same way
- 31:15that David can only reach saws house through Jonathan.
- 31:19So it is with God, through Jesus.
- 31:22And Jesus alone are the Unworthy members worthy.
- 31:27Now, to receive the grace that apart from Jonathan, apart from
- 31:32Jesus would not be possible. If Jonathan is not in the scene,
- 31:36kindness is not on the scene. If Christ didn't step into our
- 31:39world, and walk are in our world and obey on our behalf and dying
- 31:44are Half kindness would not be realized, only Wrath.
- 31:48And so we see your clear that there was a gospel picture of
- 31:51the mediating work of Jesus Christ.
- 31:54Now we come and we realized something else in verse 2.
- 31:56And trust me what we're going to do in this Bible study does not
- 31:58do this chapter Justice maybe we'll visit another time to
- 32:01excavate more Treasures of Truth, verse 2 now there was a
- 32:05servant of the House of Saul whose name was Eva and they call
- 32:08them to David and the King set them.
- 32:09Are you ziba and he said I'm a Sherman and the King said is
- 32:13they're not still someone of the House of Saul that I may show
- 32:15the kindness of God to him. The ziba said to the king, there
- 32:20is still a son of Jonathan. He is crippled in his feet.
- 32:24And the King said to him, where is he?
- 32:27And ziba said to the king, he is in the house of Mahir.
- 32:29The son of a mile at Lo debar. Pause.
- 32:35Take a breath. Look at those two verses.
- 32:39Anything that stands out, but keep your glasses on the glasses
- 32:43of the gospel and look at it in light of that.
- 32:48He sends a search party out. They find a man by the name of
- 32:50ziba Z becomes Before the Throne and the King asked about any
- 32:54potential remnants. And he is told of one.
- 32:57Who is Jonathan son? What are we told about Jonathan
- 33:00son? My fetish Seth.
- 33:04He's crippled. Interesting.
- 33:05Insight is a knot. We are told about his physical
- 33:08condition. What else are?
- 33:10We told his physical location, his physical condition, his
- 33:17physical location. Both things point to spiritual
- 33:21truths, that pertain to us in light of the Gospel.
- 33:24Theme that we are trying to study tonight.
- 33:28Does anybody remember how mephibosheth was crippled?
- 33:32He fell, right? He fell his disability here
- 33:36because we're told that he was lame and his feet reminds us of
- 33:39our weakness in the flesh before we were summoned by Jesus.
- 33:45You and I before Christ were unable to walk in Holiness.
- 33:49We're unable to keep in step with the spirit, run able to
- 33:52satisfy the demands of God. In fact, the scriptures tells us
- 33:56that while we were weak while we were weak.
- 34:01God in his perfect timing. Sends Christ to die on our
- 34:05behalf. So mephibosheth crippled stayed
- 34:07here is an illustration that you and I could not walk out in the
- 34:13way that God called us and designed us to walk out.
- 34:16Leaving us all guilty, leaving a smeared with transgression and
- 34:21that's what we see here. A man who is unable a man who
- 34:24could not not in his own strength and his own wisdom
- 34:27because of the corruption of his flesh, could not meet the
- 34:30demands of a holy God. And now when we look back and if
- 34:34you're here in second, Samuel, go to chapter 4 because we
- 34:37touched on it quickly. And we purposely put it aside so
- 34:40that when we come to this, we can dig it up in Greater detail.
- 34:44When you look at the history of this man's condition, you
- 34:47discover even more truths about the gospel in 2nd, Samuel 44.
- 34:53Jonathan the son of Saul had a son who was crippled and his
- 34:57feet. He was five years old.
- 34:59When the news about Saul and Jonathan came from dreads cereal
- 35:02and his nurse took him up and fled and as she fled in her
- 35:06haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was mephibosheth.
- 35:11This man was crippled as a result of a fall, but it's a
- 35:16very specific fall. He was dropped. by someone else
- 35:21who would experience and he would experience because of that
- 35:24mistake, the consequence, And would be forever, altered.
- 35:30You and I in a sense were dropped.
- 35:35What we, what happened in the garden?
- 35:36With our first parents is called the fall of Man.
- 35:40And that's where Humanity fell. And when they fell, we fell also
- 35:46and we are currently suffering with a with a fractured Human
- 35:50Nature. And that will be true for the
- 35:54rest of this age, until the Lord regenerates.
- 35:58Not just us completely, but the World As We Know It.
- 36:03And so, we see here, that mephibosheth is crippled, as a
- 36:06result of the cause of somebody else's failure.
- 36:11That is true for you. And I, and Adam, and Eve that is
- 36:13true with our ancestors. That is true with our first
- 36:16parents, but I find interesting too.
- 36:18Is that it happened to him at a young age.
- 36:20In other words, the consequences of the Fall appeared very early
- 36:29when does sin tend to surface in life, when you're 40, now, when
- 36:34you're four, It's not a theological age.
- 36:38I just want to sound clever. when you're very young, when
- 36:42you're very young, the imaginations and Fascinations of
- 36:46evil men, efest, Early in life, just like in a sense
- 36:52mephibosheth script illness here is his lameness here appeared in
- 36:56his youth. And we are all convinced you
- 36:59that the evidence of our inability to walk in the ways of
- 37:02God does not take much time, it manifest quite early.
- 37:07And manifest quite early. That's the physical condition.
- 37:11What about the physical location?
- 37:14Remember, he was told he's in the house of Mahir, the son of a
- 37:17meal at low, the bar? Okay, that's why sometimes Maps
- 37:21help because they're in the back of your Bible for a reason.
- 37:25If you have them. And now you're even have to go
- 37:27to the back of your Bible, you can just study a bit longer and
- 37:29examine and you can realize where things are.
- 37:33Load. The bar is found at the east of
- 37:37the Jordan. That's where the border is into
- 37:38the Promised Land. Lodi bar is distant from where
- 37:43David is. He's not close.
- 37:45He's distant. Second to that load bar, you
- 37:51know what? It means nothing without
- 37:54pasture. It's a desolate land, it's a
- 37:58fruit. This land.
- 38:00It's a land out, lacks Harvest. And so put that together, we
- 38:04have this man where he is in a distant and desolate place.
- 38:13And he is the son of royalty. Is he not?
- 38:17He is the Sun. As Grandpa was saw his father
- 38:20was Jonathan. Is he living?
- 38:24Is he living in one of Saul's homes?
- 38:28No. Where is he?
- 38:29He's in a he's in the house of an a man named Mahir.
- 38:31The son of a mile. I believe that mephibosheth was
- 38:35was very poor. Very poor.
- 38:40Now put all those descriptions together, you have a man who is
- 38:43bankrupt. You have a man who's living in a
- 38:45remote land. You have a man who was living in
- 38:47a Barren, land, a clear picture of the Sinners condition.
- 38:54Auntie, fruitless Baron. Let me add wondering just
- 38:58wondering Isolated far from the King, far from his table, far
- 39:05from his kindness and even the physical location here points to
- 39:10the spiritual reality, for all of those who are outside of
- 39:13Jesus Christ. And sure in the physical sense.
- 39:17You might be in this place tonight and you don't know Jesus
- 39:20Christ, or you think you do and you know, some level of
- 39:23emotional, he's you are surrounded by family and friends
- 39:26you have more than what you need in life, your abundantly
- 39:29provided for, I'm not talking about the physical things.
- 39:33I'm talking about how these things point to a destitution of
- 39:36the soul, and the hollowness in your soul as I speak.
- 39:42Testifies to that. Because my words I'm sure are
- 39:47speaking and they are bouncing around because there's no
- 39:50substance in you. And I hope that would change
- 39:54even at a Bible study. So what we see here about his
- 39:58physical condition and its physical location is just a
- 40:01wonderful portrait of The Sinner.
- 40:06Who is so lost without the king. What does David do verse five?
- 40:14Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Mahir, the
- 40:17son of a meal at load, the bar, a brother mentioned it.
- 40:22Who initiated this? David.
- 40:26Go get him. Go get him.
- 40:30I don't think David went himself because we find out that when he
- 40:35comes. Mephibosheth, comes he falls
- 40:37before David, he sent out his agents, he sent out.
- 40:40He sent out the necessary Representatives on for him to go
- 40:43and get the feta Chef. It's kind of like today, Jesus
- 40:47is on his throne and he sending you and I to go out to people
- 40:52and desolate places. Distant places, poor places
- 40:54spiritually to bring them to the throne of grace.
- 41:00And so he sends them. And he initiates it this is the
- 41:05kindness of God throughout the Bible throughout history.
- 41:08Even from the beginning, Adam and Eve fell, they realize their
- 41:11nakedness. They clothed themselves with fig
- 41:14leaves and what do they do after that.
- 41:17What do they do? They hide they high.
- 41:21And as their Sheltering from the presence of God, we read that
- 41:24the Lord walked in the cool of the garden.
- 41:27Cool of the day, and he calls for Adam.
- 41:30Where are you? He looks for them.
- 41:33He searches for them, you and I are saved tonight because at one
- 41:38point you were drawn The gospel came to you, you were convicted
- 41:45it spoke to you and it called you to God and you responded to
- 41:52that. And so he first loved us.
- 41:57That's why we can love him. He entered into our world.
- 42:03He put on flesh, he died a gruesome death, when none of us
- 42:06asked them to do it. Mephibosheth didn't write a
- 42:09letter to David and have one of his men, send it to David so
- 42:13that he can, you can maybe work out a deal so that he's not he's
- 42:16not completely cut off. No, it's David.
- 42:20Who goes out that this is David's plan.
- 42:23And so, while you and I are living in and just destitution
- 42:27and poverty, spiritually, he comes into that place and he
- 42:32brings us out of it. He pulls us out of it, he pulls
- 42:36him out of it and he comes. And what I want to do for the
- 42:41rest of this time is simply look because there's so much to say
- 42:44and I almost feel like I'm doing an injustice to these verses.
- 42:48But what I'm going to do for the rest of this time you and I
- 42:50together are going to look at the consequences of the kindness
- 42:53of God in mephibosheth life. Meaning, what changed?
- 42:59What changed from of have a chef after he comes before David and
- 43:03he says, yes to what David is willing, how could he not say
- 43:06yes? And they're really categorized
- 43:10in three familiar words to us as Christians.
- 43:13Peace Fellowship, help. Peace Fellowship.
- 43:21Help. Let's read together.
- 43:25Verse 6. I'm fetish at the son of
- 43:27Jonathan son of Saul came to David and fell on his face and
- 43:30paid homage and David said, mephibosheth.
- 43:33What do you think that sounded like I wonder what it sounded
- 43:39like. I wonder what the tone was.
- 43:41I wonder what the delivery was. The first thing that David says,
- 43:45was his name, a feather shot. And he answered behold, I am
- 43:51your servant. So while his face is on the
- 43:55ground, he after he hears his name, he goes, I'm your servant
- 43:59and look what David says in verse 7.
- 44:01David said to him, three important words do not fear.
- 44:06Do not fear for, I will show you kindness for the sake of your
- 44:09father. Jonathan, and I will restore to
- 44:12you all the land of saw your father, and you shall eat at my
- 44:14table. Always peace.
- 44:20When you and I experience the kindness in Jesus Christ, that
- 44:24is the moment that redefines are standing before God, and you,
- 44:28and I have no reason to ever fear God in the sense of yes, we
- 44:34Revere him as the Bible commands us to but never in a way.
- 44:38Do we relate to him? Where we are questioning whether
- 44:41or not? He will judge us like the
- 44:43unredeemed that is expelled from the child of God, when they
- 44:48really know. Oh the kindness of God because
- 44:50the words of David are trustworthy, how much more the
- 44:53words of the son of David who is the Christ?
- 44:56So trustworthy, he's not one to lie.
- 44:59He's not want to change his mind.
- 45:00So whatever he says will come to pass.
- 45:03I can take it to heart that whatever I have here is going to
- 45:08be true a hundred years from now.
- 45:10And when I stand Before, the Throne of God.
- 45:12So what you see here is this promise of Peace, you are secure
- 45:18mephibosheth You don't have to worry about anything because of
- 45:22Jonathan. I will be perpetually good to
- 45:26you. I will not change.
- 45:28I will not flip my mind. It's a sealed deal.
- 45:31It's done. And you and I know that security
- 45:36in Christ and here's the thing. Mephibosheth was so grateful for
- 45:39this, it's so obvious, you're going to realize that later on
- 45:42when David is kicked out of his own kingdom, who comes on this
- 45:45scene to just Express his loyalty to him hint.
- 45:49Mephibosheth But I can't imagine how much more grateful he was
- 45:56when just in a few chapters. God is going to Heap up, even
- 46:01more judgment on the house of Saul.
- 46:05Solve did something with the gibeonites.
- 46:07He broke a very, very important Covenant that was made back in
- 46:11the Book of Joshua. And because he broke that
- 46:14promise, many, many years later, Divine judgment was going to
- 46:18come upon his house for it will study that in great length, when
- 46:21we come to that chapter, but there's something that happens
- 46:24when David realizes there's a famine in the land, he seeks.
- 46:28God, God says, there has to be retribution Saul's descendants
- 46:32have to pay a price for what they did to the gibeonites.
- 46:36And then there's this verse you have to turn there in second
- 46:39Samuel. We're still in the same book and
- 46:41go to chapter 21, that's where the Judgment takes place.
- 46:44But look at verse 7 As judgment was going to come on some of the
- 46:54descendants of Saul second, Samuel 21-7 reads.
- 46:58But the king spared who with Eva chef The king spared
- 47:04mephibosheth, the son of Saul's Jonathan.
- 47:08Saul's son, Jonathan because of the oath of the Lord that was
- 47:11between them. Between David and Jonathan, the
- 47:14son of Saul. I wonder what happened to
- 47:21mephibosheth heart. When he realized that if he had
- 47:24not experienced the kindness of David, if Jonathan had not made
- 47:29that oath with David, he would have very likely been among
- 47:33those who were slain You know, I look at some Christians and I
- 47:37know they love the Lord. I don't want to be judgmental.
- 47:39I know they love the Lord, but when you tell him the good news,
- 47:42it sounds to them. It sounds like old news, because
- 47:45the way they react to her speak about, it feels like old news.
- 47:48I assure you. I assure you.
- 47:51That when Divine judgment comes, you're going to in that moment.
- 47:54Be really, really happy, you're saved.
- 47:57Then you're going to be able to really, really, really sing.
- 48:02And really Rejoice, then your personality that seems to be
- 48:07restrictive to your worship is not going to really matter.
- 48:12When you understand? The significance of the Covenant
- 48:16that Christ has made with us. Fetish Seth appreciated David
- 48:23and this moment but oh, I would love to see his face.
- 48:27When certain descendants of Saul were numbered to be hung and
- 48:32they skipped over mephibosheth. That's going to happen to you.
- 48:36If you're in Christ, judgment is going to come.
- 48:39It's going to come. I know it's not popular.
- 48:40It's coming. That's the message.
- 48:42Actually of the book of Acts. We were told that they were told
- 48:46to preach about the coming judge.
- 48:49Acts 10 judgment is coming, but you and I in Christ are
- 48:53protected, we're protected. Now, we will be protected then.
- 48:58You and I should enjoy that security day by day.
- 49:03Go back to the chapter. We're studying look at verse 11
- 49:06and look what we're told about, mephibosheth.
- 49:11In verse 11. We see here that David treated
- 49:20him as one of the king's Sons. I was one of the king's Sons.
- 49:28Verse 11. So mephibosheth ate at David's
- 49:31table, like one of the king's Sons.
- 49:32That's how he would be treated. Can you imagine the picture
- 49:36here? I don't know if they had a long
- 49:37table where all of David's Sons were sitting with all the wives
- 49:40that he had and here they are eating at this, this Royal feast
- 49:45and there's one out of all of them who has broken legs the
- 49:49most unlikely, guest at the Kings Table.
- 49:54I can't imagine the spectacle Shirley was, and you and II
- 49:59believe according to the scriptures, we are a spectacle
- 50:02in the sight of Heavenly Creatures and even angels, who
- 50:07know who we are, who know what we've done, who know what we
- 50:11deserve. And yet, we are right there,
- 50:13fellowshiping with the Lord, not that, not only that, we are
- 50:17considered the bride of Christ first.
- 50:18Peter tells us that this salvation is something that
- 50:20Angels long to look into The confounded by it.
- 50:26How can it be that you would treat this family, the family of
- 50:31Adam as one of your sons? And so we see here that there's
- 50:37a piece that have heavy that fetishes enjoyed, not just the
- 50:41piece, the second, prominent changes, founded four verses
- 50:44verse 7 verse 10 verse 11, verse 13.
- 50:48I'm not going to read it but I'll just tell you in those four
- 50:51verses we were told repeatedly that David had mephibosheth eat
- 50:56at his table. It's almost as though that's
- 50:59what the Holy Spirit really wants to communicate.
- 51:01Hey realize that mephibosheth has a seat at the table.
- 51:06He's actually he's actually right there and this meant so
- 51:11much to the reader of this time because you and I eating is not
- 51:16really significant. We do it on the go we barely
- 51:18have family dinners anymore but at this time, biblically
- 51:21speaking, when you would sit at a table with somebody and eat it
- 51:25denote it denoted, close Fellowship.
- 51:28Intimacy Jesus when he spoke to the lukewarm church.
- 51:32He said, if anyone would answer as I knock on this door, I will
- 51:36come in with him and do what eat with him Revelation 3:20, I will
- 51:42eat with you. I will sit recline at table and
- 51:45actually commune with you. What we see here is that in the
- 51:50gospel, we are not just saved from wrath.
- 51:52We have a seat at the table with Jesus.
- 51:55That's the picture here that you and I entered.
- 51:58Not just into the safety, from the wrath of God, but intimacy
- 52:02with the Son of God, and we enjoy him.
- 52:05And we love him, and we relate to him, and we speak to him.
- 52:07We pour out to him. And he, interacts with us.
- 52:09He answers us. He heals us.
- 52:11He leads us. There's something.
- 52:14Now that was never known before. We're no longer at a distance
- 52:17anymore, we're no longer in a desk to place.
- 52:20We are now in the very presence of Christ.
- 52:22Just like my fetish death, always.
- 52:25Always. That is what we have access to
- 52:28in the gospel. Unfortunately, many professing
- 52:31Believers don't experience it, but it's something that you and
- 52:34I can walk in. Now Christ can be the closest
- 52:37person to you in this world. I assure you of that he can be
- 52:41the most real ever-present person that, you know, in this
- 52:45life And I'm not satisfied in those moments where he's
- 52:49distant. I know, sometimes he does clothe
- 52:51himself and darkness. A scripture says to test our
- 52:54faith. But my heart knows him.
- 52:58Your heart should know him. That gospel purchased that.
- 53:02If Jesus is just a person that you study, you're missing it.
- 53:06He's to be known. He's me relish.
- 53:08She's to be experienced, you know, this is a side note bear
- 53:13with me because when you discover things like I had
- 53:16doesn't fit, but I'm just gonna throw it out in there anyway.
- 53:19I really like my fetish F. So, you know, for me, a lot of
- 53:23the names that I love in the Bible.
- 53:25Our with characters that have very complicated names.
- 53:28Mephibosheth is one of those guys.
- 53:31Mephibosheth had his son himself.
- 53:35I think this is important for somebody to hear.
- 53:37So, pay attention, wake up. Okay?
- 53:39Pay attention lean in, what's his son's name?
- 53:43Anybody know. Yeah, Micah in verse 12,
- 53:47mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Myka Myka Am I
- 53:52saying it right? Pastor, Daniel Mika.
- 53:56I know little bit of Hebrew to Mika.
- 54:02Do you happen to know what that name means?
- 54:07Yes, you're on to it. Mija means who is like God.
- 54:14Who is like God? You know what impresses me about
- 54:18that, that makes total sense for you to name your son, who is
- 54:21like God after you experience the kindness of David. but he
- 54:25didn't name his son, Mika after he sat at the table, he named
- 54:28his son Mica long before that Doesn't that tell you about this
- 54:34man's faith? Huh.
- 54:37Here's this man who was dropped as a child to be crippled
- 54:41forever. Here's a man who had his father,
- 54:45his grandfather. His uncle's slaughtered in war.
- 54:50Here's a man who couldn't even afford his own house, but had
- 54:52some Dungey room in a desolate destitute place across the
- 54:57Jordan and yet he had a faith and trust in God, where he can
- 55:01name his son and every time he called him for his rations for
- 55:04dinner, he would be minded, who is like God, Who is like God?
- 55:12You know, we get a little poked in life as Christians and we
- 55:14wondered if there is a God. Is there a god?
- 55:18Is there a god? I didn't get the promotion that
- 55:20I thought I didn't get to go to. I didn't get the Tesla Model
- 55:22that I wanted. Is there a God?
- 55:25Here is a man who has been smashed in life.
- 55:30And yet he could say who is like God as an act of worship.
- 55:36And every time he would relate to his son, it would be a moment
- 55:39of worship. I believe.
- 55:42And this is before Mercy came his way.
- 55:44This is before he was promoted and elevated to such a degree.
- 55:50That says something. That says something.
- 55:54Peace Fellowship. Help.
- 55:59What do I mean by help? Those things might be obvious,
- 56:01the things that we already covered, they're just so strong
- 56:05with gospel truth, but this one might not be immediately
- 56:07perceived. And this is where I'm going to
- 56:09end. Look at verse 9 with me.
- 56:16Then the king called ziba, Saul servant, and set them, all that
- 56:19belong to us, all, and to all his house, I have given to your
- 56:22Masters grandson, and you and your sons and your servants
- 56:26shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce that
- 56:30your Masters grandson may have bread to eat but mephibosheth
- 56:34your Masters. Grandson shall always eat at my
- 56:36table now ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants.
- 56:41Keep your gospel glasses on. Here's What's Happening Here.
- 56:50As a result of David's kindness, he looks at ziba, he calls him
- 56:55over, he says Zeba from this moment on you're going to relate
- 57:00differently to mephibosheth. And here is your new
- 57:03responsibilities in your relationship to mephibosheth.
- 57:06You and your son's, because I'm giving him all this property.
- 57:11You're going to till the land till the soil and you're going
- 57:14to produce the crops so that he can profit from it.
- 57:20Zebra from now on, you will be a personal and ever-present help.
- 57:27To mephibosheth. Sound familiar, mephibosheth.
- 57:32Here is your inheritance all that saw loss?
- 57:35All that was just kind of left in Oblivion.
- 57:38I'm bringing it to you now it's yours.
- 57:40Your name is on it. Here's your deed.
- 57:43But my fetish show has a problem.
- 57:44There's any, what's his problem? Yeah, he can't walk.
- 57:49In his own strength, he cannot experience the fullness of his
- 57:55inheritance. Therefore, the king calls upon a
- 58:02servant to come to mephibosheth Aid.
- 58:05In order to know all that the king purchased for him.
- 58:11And so, what you have here in this closed context is ziba
- 58:16being a very strong reflection of the inheritance of the holy
- 58:21spirit. In the Christians life.
- 58:23You cannot know what the king wants you to know, if you're
- 58:28left to your natural condition. Just like my fetish who could
- 58:32not walk, it would be just as pathetic to try to live in all
- 58:37the spiritual blessings that have been purchased in Christ,
- 58:40without the aid of the advocate, in the Holy Spirit, who comes to
- 58:45help us. And so, in the same way that the
- 58:49ziba figure here is now an A2 mephibosheth.
- 58:52We have the same thing in the Holy Spirit.
- 58:55He is there to do what we cannot do in our own strength.
- 58:58He is there to empower because we lack that power.
- 59:01And so you and I now can reach Greater Heights, you and I can
- 59:04do what we could never do before this moment, we can walk in
- 59:08Holiness, we can enjoy fruit. We can profit, we can escape
- 59:12spiritual poverty, and actually grow in spiritual riches.
- 59:16Because of the servant that has been commissioned by the king.
- 59:22Oh, that excites me, that excites me because even when you
- 59:27read, the number of sons and servants that ziba had I believe
- 59:31that's two, that's the communicate, the great resource
- 59:35the overwhelming resource. That now, mephibosheth had at
- 59:38his disposal, all these servants.
- 59:40All these Sons now are for you. Method is Chef Here's the thing,
- 59:46the holy spirit is not just some idea.
- 59:51He is rivers of living water flowing through Us, Rivers of
- 59:57living water flowing through us. And what we can know about that
- 1:00:01is that there is a distinct obvious tangible realization of
- 1:00:05his presence in our lives. The fetishist life is never
- 1:00:09going to be the same because of ziba.
- 1:00:12It's never going to be the same. He doesn't have to crawl to the
- 1:00:14fridge anymore. He doesn't have to go and dig
- 1:00:16with his hands in the fields, from this moment on ziba, is
- 1:00:21going to do everything that he cannot do on his own.
- 1:00:25So here's the thing. Your call to Holiness your
- 1:00:27called to Joy your call to prayer, without ceasing.
- 1:00:30You're called to be a bold witness.
- 1:00:32You can't do that on your own. Neither can I leave me to
- 1:00:36myself? I will fail.
- 1:00:38I will go back to sin. I will disappoint My Savior.
- 1:00:42I will not boldly stand for Christ.
- 1:00:45My spirit will look just like my fetish at the, in the physical
- 1:00:48sense. I will just be laying there
- 1:00:49useless. But because the servant has been
- 1:00:53sent. You and I can actually know
- 1:00:55something that we never thought we could enjoy.
- 1:00:59And here's my charge to do because of the reality of the
- 1:01:02presence of the Holy Spirit. People should be able to look at
- 1:01:05us to some degree and say how is it that you're able to do what
- 1:01:10you're doing knowing that you are a flesh like me knowing that
- 1:01:15you're a son of Adam just like me knowing that you have the
- 1:01:17same nature and you're dealing with the same Temptations as me
- 1:01:21and you and I can testify of the Glorious inheritance in Christ
- 1:01:25because he sent a Helper and that helper makes all of This
- 1:01:29possible, I remember sitting in office with a man that I met
- 1:01:32once, and I never saw him again. After this, he was brought by a
- 1:01:35mutual friend, we sat down this was years ago and he was telling
- 1:01:39me about his life, and it was a polluted life.
- 1:01:42It was a filthy life, it was just degradation, it was just
- 1:01:47vile. and then he looked at me, he was a very open and very
- 1:01:51colorful individual and he looked at me and he leaned in
- 1:01:55and he goes, you do these things, don't you I thought to
- 1:01:59myself, how am I going to say this without sounding arrogant?
- 1:02:02How am I going to communicate? What Jesus actually can do for
- 1:02:05you without sounding like advocating?
- 1:02:08Sinless, perfectionism and I leaned over and says, brother,
- 1:02:11to be honest. No.
- 1:02:13No. yeah, before the age of 20 when I when I was encountered by
- 1:02:18Christ, probably I can, I can attest to what you're saying,
- 1:02:24but something happened. When Jesus changed me.
- 1:02:28And he looked at me with utter disbelief.
- 1:02:32He goes, what? You can't tell me that.
- 1:02:35You're actually you're serious. Hey, look at the mutual friend.
- 1:02:38He goes, no, no, you're not telling the truth.
- 1:02:40I'm like, what benefit do I have?
- 1:02:42Like, I don't know you. I'm not asking anything from
- 1:02:44you. I'm telling you what Christ can
- 1:02:45do in a life? He did it in my life.
- 1:02:47No no you're telling me and he started naming these different
- 1:02:49since you're telling me you don't do these things.
- 1:02:54You're the same age as me. You have the same hormones as
- 1:02:57me. You have the same Temptations as
- 1:02:58me. You're telling me that you don't
- 1:03:00give yourself over these. I said, look, man, it's getting
- 1:03:02very uncomfortable. I don't know how many more times
- 1:03:04I gotta tell, you know, because that's what the Holy Spirit
- 1:03:08does. And then that moment this meant
- 1:03:11as though he met an alien. Are you from Mars?
- 1:03:17so now I'm a Christian he didn't say the Mars thing, but he
- 1:03:22looked at me as though I was from a different planet.
- 1:03:24So, no, this is, this is the beauty of being a follower of
- 1:03:27Jesus Christ. It's not just a ticket to get
- 1:03:30out of hell, he brings the Holy Spirit into you and things
- 1:03:34change, and you're empowered and you walk different.
- 1:03:37You see different. You have access to different
- 1:03:39things, the fetish of would now have ziba in his shadow for the
- 1:03:43rest of his life. Well unfortunately the example
- 1:03:47and the illustration of the Holy Spirit and Ziva is not going to
- 1:03:49last too long. They might conclude here so much
- 1:03:53to discover. I encourage you go through this
- 1:03:55chapter yourself and with the New Covenant boundaries, look at
- 1:04:00this text and try to discover things.
- 1:04:03But look at the response of this man.
- 1:04:06In verse 6. And if that bichette the son of
- 1:04:09Jonathan, son of Saul came to David and fell on his face.
- 1:04:12And paid homage David said, mephibosheth and he answered
- 1:04:15behold, I am your servant. That is the appropriate response
- 1:04:20to the kindness of the king. When you calls your name, and
- 1:04:25you realize that the tone of your name being declared is a
- 1:04:28tone of Mercy, compassion. And love the reaction, must be
- 1:04:34what we see here. I'm your servant If you're
- 1:04:39calling me the way you're calling me, if you're calling me
- 1:04:41into what you're calling me into.
- 1:04:44Then even though these legs are broken, I will serve you.
- 1:04:48To the capacity in which I can serve you.
- 1:04:51And I will give to you what you ask of me and I will do whatever
- 1:04:55you call me to do. And so, your life and mind being
- 1:05:02totally devoted to God in service.
- 1:05:05Is not what we do to tap into the kindness of God.
- 1:05:09It's what we do because we've tasted it.
- 1:05:12It's what we do because we've tasted it.
- 1:05:15And I hope that your energy and serving the lord.
- 1:05:19It's not because you think that his kindness fluctuates, but
- 1:05:23because it is so concrete and secure and so reliable that you
- 1:05:27cannot help. But just throw yourself at his
- 1:05:29feet and say, oh my king, I'm your servant, how can I, how can
- 1:05:36I reserve my service tea? I'm yours.
- 1:05:40I'm Yours. Let's pray.
- 1:05:53Lord, we are overwhelmed by the portrait of this text that from
- 1:06:00corner to corner with every detail.
- 1:06:09Conveys the gospel. May it never sound like old news
- 1:06:14to us. maybe he realized the piece, the hope, the help, the
- 1:06:21fellowship that we have, because the King has decided to execute
- 1:06:29kindness. To the most undeserving race.
- 1:06:35Adams Race. and then we just pray that even if there's one
- 1:06:39person in this house, He does not realize what Christ has done
- 1:06:47on their behalf, that today, it would change.
- 1:06:51And they would gladly fall before your throne.
- 1:06:56Knowing what Jesus is done on their behalf.
- 1:07:00Trusting that you are more than willing to invite them to your
- 1:07:04table. And provide them that which
- 1:07:08nothing in this world can offer. Oh Lord.
- 1:07:12We just pray that as we sing to you. we would sing with the
- 1:07:15revelation of how you have preserved us from Wrath, and how
- 1:07:19you have provided for us. Not just in this age, but in the
- 1:07:24coming ages. The immeasurable Grace and
- 1:07:29kindness. That is toward us in Christ
- 1:07:31Jesus. We bless you in Jesus name.
- 1:07:35Amen. Amen.
- 1:07:33We bless you in Jesus name. Amen.
- 1:07:36Amen.
