Latest / Founder Unfiltered - What Founders Think But Never Say / The Two Marketing Channels I Built My Entire Business On
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of 6 Figure Secrets for Fractional
- 0:03Experts. My name is Bradley Jacobs.
- 0:05I'm your host, the founder and CEO of Mylance.
- 0:09Before we jump in, Mylance has this incredible tool we built,
- 0:13honestly, selfishly for my own use, but we were now allowing
- 0:17you to use it. It helps you identify the
- 0:20content that's going to resonate with your ideal customer so you
- 0:24can be attracting clients and customers on LinkedIn gives you
- 0:28a content calendar. It writes post in your voice.
- 0:30It learns your voice over time. It's incredibly powerful and our
- 0:35users are loving it. So come check it out.
- 0:38Today's episode is about the channel that I've used to build
- 0:41this entire business. I get it all done in under an
- 0:45hour per week, like literally one hour.
- 0:48And I'm going to tell you how you can do that too.
- 0:50Also really going to talk about what prevents founders, business
- 0:54owners, fractionals from being successful with marketing.
- 0:58One thing that I've really struggled with honestly the
- 1:00entire time, building my business and I, I get to keep
- 1:04coming back over and over and over again to the disciplined
- 1:07focus. So we're going to dive in right
- 1:10now. The truth is that there's a
- 1:13million different ways to grow your business.
- 1:14And that in and of itself presents a huge challenge for
- 1:19business owners because there's really no right way.
- 1:23And every person you've talked to has a different idea or
- 1:27ideology or they're like, I swear, this is what works and
- 1:30there's no right answer, right? Like, you could build an entire
- 1:33business on SEO or Meta ads or LinkedIn or your podcast or
- 1:40whatever, right? But there's no right way to do
- 1:42it, people. Some people swear by
- 1:44partnerships. There's truly no right way.
- 1:47And so I've been struggling with the varied lack of focus as I
- 1:53built my business. And so I've really forced myself
- 1:56to narrow in what I do and frankly say no to literally
- 2:01everything else. And I've done this over years.
- 2:05I've trial and error and made mistakes and gotten distracted
- 2:09and spent money on ads that don't work and invested in
- 2:11partnerships that went nowhere and on down the line.
- 2:14So I've I've done a lot of different things.
- 2:16And really from that experience, I've honed in on a strategy
- 2:20that's been incredibly successful over the last number
- 2:22of years. And I'm going to share that with
- 2:24you here today. Now, it's going to sound like we
- 2:28do a bunch of stuff and we do, but it all comes really from one
- 2:33main pillar. So you can think of, if you can
- 2:36imagine in your brain right now, wherever you're listening to
- 2:39this, there is a triangle, basically a pyramid.
- 2:43And at the top, the very top of the pyramid is this podcast,
- 2:48because this podcast, we do two different kinds of episodes.
- 2:52As you probably know, we do these audio only episodes.
- 2:55And then I do a video episode with a guest and I alternate
- 2:59every other week regardless. The episode obviously is a
- 3:03podcast and that's a marketing channel in and of itself,
- 3:06whether Spotify, Apple, YouTube. But then I have the transcript
- 3:11and I take the transcript and I turn it into multiple different
- 3:15kinds of content from there. So that allows me to basically
- 3:19record one thing once a week, whether this episode will be
- 3:23about 15 minutes or the other episodes between 35 and 45.
- 3:27And all of a sudden I have content across every major
- 3:31platform. So the video, right, we chop
- 3:34that up into shorter clips and the audio or I guess both audio
- 3:38and the video, we have the transcript and we turn those
- 3:41into a blog, a newsletter, LinkedIn post, tweets, that's
- 3:45it, those four. So, and then the video, we take
- 3:48those short clips across LinkedIn, Instagram X and
- 3:53YouTube Shorts. So from one pillar up top, the
- 3:58main content source is this podcast.
- 4:02And then we're able to distribute it across a number of
- 4:04different sources. So you end up, we end up being
- 4:06all over the Internet, but it takes such little time because
- 4:10we're not reinventing the wheel every single time, right?
- 4:13It comes from one major content source.
- 4:15Now, the second thing that is what we really focus on in
- 4:21addition to the podcast is LinkedIn, right?
- 4:23And I said we take the transcript and we turn it into
- 4:26LinkedIn post. But that's not all we do, right?
- 4:28I also am using the Mylans tool to publish additional pieces of
- 4:33LinkedIn content that hit on the pain point of our ideal
- 4:37customer. So those are the, you know, the,
- 4:39the title of this episode, right, is the 2 channels you
- 4:42need or that we use. And so the podcast, which turns
- 4:45into a bunch of different channels.
- 4:47And then we have the LinkedIn post that I generate from the
- 4:52Mylands tool itself. Now there's a strategy here that
- 4:56has taken everything I've done to a whole new level and it's
- 5:00really what kind of guests we have on the podcast because it's
- 5:05great to have the podcast and as long as it's adding value, I
- 5:08kind of don't really care. Like that's all this is about.
- 5:10Like I just want to add value, add value, add value in return.
- 5:14You're building Trust and will come work with us.
- 5:16But the whole idea is this is a free resource, add value, add
- 5:19value. Because the reason I got into
- 5:21this business is because I love helping and serving people.
- 5:25So the the game changer though, has been getting guests on the
- 5:30podcast that one add a tremendous amount of value. 2
- 5:34are incredible experts in their field, 3 already have a
- 5:38following and four have some sort of complimentary service or
- 5:42product to what we have. Because what ends up happening
- 5:45there is they distribute the podcast to their audience.
- 5:49So in a way, it kind of acts like a partnership and sometimes
- 5:53we even do an affiliate deal with them, right?
- 5:55So the podcast is now not just LinkedIn content or X content or
- 5:58Spotify, YouTube. Now I actually have, I'm
- 6:00touching partnerships and affiliates with this, but also
- 6:05there's an opportunity for that person to be our customer.
- 6:09And sometimes they have a podcast also.
- 6:11And then they invite me on their podcast and all of a sudden I'm
- 6:15now a speaker. And that's happened actually
- 6:17multiple times. I've been on maybe a dozen
- 6:19podcasts at this point over the years.
- 6:22So by taking what I'm doing and going to the next level, which
- 6:27means there's some research required on my side of who do I
- 6:30actually want on the podcast, which guests are going to add
- 6:34the most value to our audience and are going to be beneficial
- 6:39overall to our business, right? The end of the day, our business
- 6:44is all about adding value. And so the more people I can get
- 6:47in front of, the more opportunity I have to add value
- 6:50to those people, which means that the guests that I get on, I
- 6:54can't just take anybody who comes to me, which frankly, at
- 6:56the beginning I was pretty LAX. I was like, OK, like if you have
- 7:00some expertise in the area and you can speak well on the topic,
- 7:03I'm happy to have you on. But we're at a place now where
- 7:06frankly, we can command better gaps.
- 7:08We can command the real expertise.
- 7:10I can find bigger experts in the space.
- 7:15And what that takes is being willing to put in the time and
- 7:19research, but also being willing to ask like these people,
- 7:22frankly, like I want the biggest people on the planet, right?
- 7:26I want the people that are the best experts in the world in
- 7:29this space so that you get the most value.
- 7:32Which means when I'm scared of asking someone who has, you
- 7:35know, a million followers or whatever it is, or has this huge
- 7:39distribution, this big name, whatever it is, I get to
- 7:43basically get over it. Because really, what's the worst
- 7:45that happens? The worst that happens is they
- 7:48ignore me or they say no or they make fun of me for even trying.
- 7:52That maybe is really the worst case is someone to say like,
- 7:55wow, funny joke, you thought you could get me, which is so
- 7:58incredibly unlikely to happen that someone would ever say
- 8:01that. But if I just play out the worst
- 8:03case scenario, that's probably it.
- 8:05And could I handle that if that happened?
- 8:08Absolutely. Like, it wouldn't feel good for
- 8:10sure, but I could handle the emotional experience.
- 8:13I would process it. It would be OK, and I'd move on
- 8:15to the next person. And I would basically probably
- 8:17respond or either not respond or just be like, hey, like you
- 8:20could say no without being rude, right?
- 8:22No, no, no big deal. So there's an element of my own
- 8:27imposter syndrome, my own, like, am I big enough to get this
- 8:31person on the podcast? And it's like, those thoughts
- 8:34don't serve me at all, right? So I basically get to
- 8:37acknowledge them and do the courageous thing anyway, which
- 8:40is doing the action in the face of fear, right?
- 8:45And going to these guests and saying, hey, I think you could
- 8:49add a lot of value. It would be great distribution
- 8:51for you. More distribution never hurt.
- 8:53Do you want to come on the podcast?
- 8:55So the strategies themselves are one thing, but how you execute
- 9:00them is everything, right? And it's the same thing around,
- 9:04let's say the short clips, like if I record this podcast and
- 9:08then the clips that we cut aren't great, right?
- 9:13Then we're kind of wasting our time.
- 9:15So there's a quality component with every single aspect of your
- 9:19marketing where everything really needs to be in line,
- 9:23starting with who's your customer and what's their pain
- 9:26point. So that's the first exercise we
- 9:28do. All right, who's my customer?
- 9:29What are their pain points? What's our differentiator?
- 9:32And how do we make sure that our content is weaving a strategy, a
- 9:36story through all of that as we go?
- 9:39And how do we nail quality without taking forever?
- 9:43Because we can't be perfectionist about this.
- 9:45How do we nail a, a quality output that doesn't take
- 9:50forever, that's going to add value, that's going to resonate
- 9:52with our ideal customer and that's distributed in as many
- 9:55places in as little amount of time as possible?
- 9:58And over the years, I have found that these combined 2 strategies
- 10:02podcast plus the LinkedIn content is the best way to
- 10:07maximize my output for my effort.
- 10:12And I'll just go a little bit deeper in how we think about
- 10:14what kind of content to put out there because I'm still keeping
- 10:17it a little bit high level. So if we think about this
- 10:19podcast, the way I think about it is all right, if our
- 10:22customer, our founders, business owners, independent consultants,
- 10:25they're all business owners that are usually early to middle on.
- 10:30And maybe they've been doing their business for a few years,
- 10:32but they're not, you know, as established as a lot of other
- 10:35founders might be, a lot of other business owners might be.
- 10:38And So what do they want to hear?
- 10:40They want to hear success stories of people that have been
- 10:43there and done that. They want to hear from coaches
- 10:47who have an expertise that helps this customer maybe in a
- 10:50slightly different way, right? Like maybe it's a mindset coach,
- 10:54or maybe it's a financial planning coach, or maybe it's
- 10:57someone who's more tactical with automation system, whatever it
- 11:00is, right? Like coaches that support the
- 11:03same customer in a slightly different way than we do, or
- 11:06even in a very similar way that has a slightly different take,
- 11:09which everyone's going to have because no one else is me,
- 11:11right? The takes are always going to be
- 11:12slightly different or an expert in something that's related to
- 11:18what you're trying to do. So I brought on sales experts or
- 11:22marketing experts or branding experts because at the end of
- 11:25the day, the main goal of this podcast is to help you grow your
- 11:29business by attracting new clients sustainably and
- 11:32effortlessly. I wish it was effortlessly, but
- 11:35as most as best we can, right? So the sales people, the
- 11:39marketing people, the branding people that are total experts in
- 11:41their field are amazing to have on this podcast because they
- 11:44bring another layer of expertise that is different and and deeper
- 11:50than mine. And of course you're going to
- 11:52want to hear from the business owners who've already been there
- 11:54and done that. I've had a number of agency
- 11:56owners on this podcast or fractionals that have built up a
- 11:59multiple 6 figure business. It's like what?
- 12:02Here's what I've done. It's just really simple.
- 12:04It's almost like the how I built this podcast where I used to
- 12:07love that when I was an early on founder of like, all right, give
- 12:10me the the details of what it was like in the weeds of that
- 12:13company early on. So I'm really trying to think
- 12:16about from your shoes, from the listener shoes, what is going to
- 12:21be interesting, inspiring, educational for you.
- 12:24And then that allows me to basically say like, OK, that's
- 12:27going to be the strategy here. And I'm going to have that lens
- 12:30on the on who I invite into the podcast that then becomes the
- 12:36top of the pyramid distribution funnel for the rest of the
- 12:38podcast. So you get to ask yourself, what
- 12:42am I going to do with all this information?
- 12:44Because it's all great in theory, but it's like, what do I
- 12:45actually want to do? And so I'll tell you that the
- 12:49lowest hanging fruit for sure is posting on LinkedIn, right?
- 12:53It takes such little time. Use our tool, don't use our
- 12:56tool. Find a way to show up on
- 12:58LinkedIn a few times per week after you've done a little bit
- 13:01of work nailing down who's your customer, what's their pain
- 13:03point, and what should be my content strategy if you want to
- 13:07go the podcast route, and I do highly recommend this because it
- 13:11can be such low hanging fruit is finding someone to support you.
- 13:16So I've been amazing producer and editor of the podcast who
- 13:19one holds me accountable, but 2 takes this file that I'm about
- 13:23to give him when I'm done recording this.
- 13:25And he's the one who turns it into the actual Spotify, Apple,
- 13:30YouTube clip that you'll end up listening to.
- 13:32And he cuts the video into shorter outputs.
- 13:37So he does a lot for me. And one of the biggest things is
- 13:41that accountability. And there is no freaking way I'd
- 13:43be able to do this without him. And as you listen to this
- 13:47podcast, you realize there's no ads, there's no big intro.
- 13:50We don't have a little musical thing at the beginning or the
- 13:53end. There's no fanciness with it,
- 13:55right? And will we get there someday?
- 13:57Maybe, but I launched this podcast with literally like a
- 14:00graphic that I think was AI generated a name.
- 14:02We spent a little bit of time workshopping and then I was
- 14:05like, you know what, let's just get content out there.
- 14:07This is just about adding value. This doesn't need to be pretty
- 14:09beautiful. Like it just just get it out,
- 14:12right. So these are super simple.
- 14:14We don't overcomplicate things because I just don't think it's
- 14:17necessary. Like it's not worth it.
- 14:19So finding someone like him, we actually have another partner
- 14:22that does these these productions.
- 14:25So I'm happy to, we'll share that in the show notes as well.
- 14:28If anybody wants an intro to my producer, I'm happy to introduce
- 14:31introduce you to him as well. And you just get it out there.
- 14:35And the other thing I use, I use podmatch.com.
- 14:38It's $6 a month. It shares what our podcast is
- 14:41and basically people ask me to be on our podcast.
- 14:45So especially when I was getting started, it was a great way to
- 14:48find guests and it made it super low heating fruit, not time
- 14:52consuming to find my next guest. And from there, there's a lot of
- 14:55AI tools and automations to take the transcript and at least get
- 14:59a draft going for your blog, newsletter, LinkedIn post,
- 15:01things like that. All right, that's going to wrap
- 15:04today's episode. Thank you so much for listening.
- 15:06If you got value out of this, share it with a friend, give us
- 15:09a rating, ping me on LinkedIn. It really means the world to get
- 15:12those kind of acknowledgments. And lastly, come check us out at
