- 0:00He deemed the victims claim not sustained, which is a really polite way of saying we don't
- 0:10believe you and also we don't care.
- 0:13Like what does that even mean?
- 0:14Actually, this is what it means.
- 0:18He had the thin blue line to protect him from any harm, even if just to his reputation.
- 0:27Deserved or not.
- 0:34Hi, Cassie.
- 0:42Hi, Caitlyn.
- 0:43Hi, creepy people.
- 0:45Hello.
- 0:46Hello.
- 0:47If you're new to our creepy corner of the world, this is PNW Haunts and Homicides, where
- 0:53we chat about true crime.
- 0:56The paranormal and all things creepy and other witchy stuff and whatever we really feel
- 1:03like, frankly, in the Pacific Northwest.
- 1:07Or the PNW if you're nasty.
- 1:12You know what else is nasty?
- 1:14Oh, what?
- 1:15A tarot reading.
- 1:16Oh, and we do those.
- 1:17We do those.
- 1:18We do those at the end of every episode for a little deeper insight into our topic for
- 1:24the day.
- 1:25We do.
- 1:27So I guess before I get into it, you know, what kind of mood are you in?
- 1:38Are you feeling over there?
- 1:40What kind of mood should I be in?
- 1:42No, I'm just looking for a baseline.
- 1:46I was feeling pretty good.
- 1:48Not like great, not like bad.
- 1:50Oh, okay.
- 1:51Good.
- 1:52Cool.
- 1:53Well, if you're not angry by the end of this, then I'm just going to have to assume you weren't
- 1:58listening.
- 1:59Okay.
- 2:00Okay.
- 2:01She's like, great.
- 2:02Okay.
- 2:03Test.
- 2:04There will be a test at the end.
- 2:05Okay.
- 2:06Someone to pop quiz.
- 2:08Focus, Cassie.
- 2:10Or is there?
- 2:12All right.
- 2:13So we don't do this a ton.
- 2:16So hopefully this is all the warning that anybody who, you know, listens with regularity
- 2:22will need, but trigger warning for domestic violence, coercion, both psychological and
- 2:33sexual, as well as the emotional abuse of children and also that of a spousal relationship.
- 2:44And if you're sensitive about any of the aforementioned, should be super understandable, or
- 2:52about corruption and brutality at the hands of law enforcement, this is going to be a pretty
- 2:58rough one.
- 3:00Okay.
- 3:02She's like, I actually just remembered I have a thing.
- 3:06I have a thing.
- 3:07I will see later or I will see you in another time.
- 3:11Oh, what's that thing?
- 3:14My uber, see?
- 3:15Oh, yeah.
- 3:16I almost wore that tank top today.
- 3:18That's funny.
- 3:20Oh, well, you're not allowed to catch an uber.
- 3:25Fine.
- 3:26All right.
- 3:27I'm ready to get pissed.
- 3:29Yes.
- 3:30Let's go.
- 3:31All right.
- 3:34Tacoma police chief David Brame kept a picture in his office.
- 3:39A framed portrait of Al Pacino from his role as Michael Corleone in the cult classic The
- 3:48Godfather.
- 3:49Hmm.
- 3:50I'm sure that having him on my wall or can you picture the portrait?
- 3:57I've never seen that movie.
- 4:00I mean, I think I've seen parts of it.
- 4:03I don't know that I've actually sat down and watched it like all the way through.
- 4:07I know what he looks like older.
- 4:09I'm assuming he was younger than that or was he older than that?
- 4:12He is younger than that.
- 4:13That's a pretty old movie.
- 4:15Who does he play in that?
- 4:17Michael Corleone.
- 4:20I've very said I was like, she literally just said it.
- 4:24Yeah, it doesn't help because I don't know.
- 4:26Okay.
- 4:27Okay.
- 4:28I need you to like mobster guys, right?
- 4:31Yeah.
- 4:32Okay.
- 4:33So here's what I'm going to do.
- 4:35I don't think it's this portrait, but very similar.
- 4:38I'm assuming I will see if I can just air drop this.
- 4:42Oh, that's it?
- 4:44Yeah.
- 4:45You feel like the main character?
- 4:48Yeah.
- 4:49Oh.
- 4:50Okay.
- 4:51Wow, that's really young.
- 4:53That's quite dashing.
- 4:55Maybe I should watch the movie.
- 4:57She's like, I'm going home and I'm watching the Godfather.
- 5:00Wait a minute.
- 5:01You didn't tell me there was a handsome man in it.
- 5:04Did you think that it was about like a Godfather like at the church being like there for the
- 5:12baptism or?
- 5:13No, I knew what it was about.
- 5:16You know, I watched Gilmore Girls and they watched that on Gilmore Girls.
- 5:20So it's kind of like I watched this.
- 5:22Basically the same.
- 5:23I'm sure.
- 5:24Yeah.
- 5:25Mm-hmm.
- 5:26All right.
- 5:27So now you know.
- 5:28Okay.
- 5:29No, no.
- 5:30Thank you.
- 5:31I'm informed.
- 5:32Yes.
- 5:33The portrait was a gift.
- 5:34Apparently part of an inside joke amongst him and a bunch of his cop buddies, which is I'm not
- 5:41going to lie, that was an immediate red flag for me because I don't know a lot of cops that
- 5:48would be like, yeah, I'm going to hang that on my wall.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:53If they did the legal stuff in that movie, right?
- 5:56Yeah, like quite a bit.
- 5:59It's like kind of the whole thing.
- 6:00Oh.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:02All them.
- 6:03Weird.
- 6:04Okay.
- 6:19Yeah.
- 6:37Yeah.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:33Yeah.
- 7:34Yeah.
- 7:35Yeah.
- 7:36So anyway, sincerely - XOXO "The Clitorati"
- 7:40I like it.
- 7:41I just hate that.
- 7:42I just hate that.
- 7:45I mean, they would never like use like a term that downplays that for a woman.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51And be like, seriously?
- 7:53Yeah.
- 7:54So why, why, why are met and why are we excusing men?
- 8:02Do you know why?
- 8:03No.
- 8:04I know why.
- 8:05Why?
- 8:06Also Taylor Swift knows why.
- 8:07Huh.
- 8:08Because the play is going to play.
- 8:10Well, that's.
- 8:11Play is going to play.
- 8:12No.
- 8:13No.
- 8:14He was a man destined for success in all avenues, seemingly.
- 8:23He was the classic high school sports star turned small time local celebrity.
- 8:28I could see that.
- 8:30Yeah.
- 8:31Sorry, we had to pause from my audible I roll.
- 8:38After graduating from Lincoln high school, he followed in his father's footsteps as a
- 8:42second generation law enforcement officer.
- 8:46When he joined the force in 1981, it wasn't just his father already established in law
- 8:52enforcement.
- 8:53He joined three other family members already serving with a badge.
- 8:58Whoo.
- 8:59It's a cop family.
- 9:00Beneath his shiny all American hometown hero exterior, there were a few.
- 9:07Cobwebs.
- 9:08He needs a swiffer Duster.
- 9:11Yeah, they were real big spiders.
- 9:16Brame's start in law enforcement.
- 9:18Perhaps hadn't been the easiest.
- 9:20He took three psychological evaluations before he was deemed eligible.
- 9:26Was he deemed eligible on the third one or on the fourth one?
- 9:29Mm-hmm.
- 9:30And it's a little unclear.
- 9:32It's kind of neither here nor there in the end.
- 9:34But yeah.
- 9:36There's a lot of follow up questions.
- 9:39Few new or noticed.
- 9:43Braim had also submitted what some job screeners called a questionable list of personal references
- 9:50that were incomplete and misleading.
- 9:53He still got the job.
- 9:55Of course he did.
- 9:58He is a white man.
- 9:59That's probably fine.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:02As chief, he seemed to take after the man who hung on his wall, promoting those he favored
- 10:08and ensuring that those he didn't were too fearful to move against him.
- 10:14Yikes.
- 10:15Which is definitely what you want when someone's in a position of power.
- 10:21Yeah.
- 10:22You have to be feared.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:24Otherwise you're just going to get someone else is going to take power, right?
- 10:28Exactly.
- 10:29It reminds me of actually, and it's funny and the story is not funny, but I just pictured
- 10:37that scene where Michael Scott, they were asking him, do you want people to love you or fear
- 10:42you?
- 10:43And he's like, I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.
- 10:48People were actually afraid of saying anything against him or trying to bring attention to
- 10:55anything that he might be doing wrong, and that apparently included far more serious crimes,
- 11:02including that one time that he was accused of rape.
- 11:07I forgot you were talking about that shit.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11Man.
- 11:12The 1988 internal investigations complaint was kept relatively quiet by the department.
- 11:20So remember, this is well prior to him becoming the chief also.
- 11:25Oh, yeah.
- 11:27Okay.
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:29Right.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:31Then chief Ray Fetland, which it's like a Finnish name, so there's like F's and J's.
- 11:38I'm just guessing at the pronunciation there.
- 11:43He deemed the victims claim not sustained.
- 11:47Which is a really polite way of saying we don't believe you and also we don't care.
- 11:53Like, what does that even mean?
- 11:56Actually, this is what it means.
- 11:59He had the thin blue line to protect him from any harm, even if just to his reputation,
- 12:08deserved or not.
- 12:10A frightening departmental cover up has come to light years since.
- 12:16Reportedly, a fellow police officer stated that Braim had admitted to the rape.
- 12:23This fellow officer agreed not to speak up if Braim went for counseling.
- 12:29Which is particularly upsetting given the fact that a detective who investigated the case
- 12:35in question stated there was definitely there was definitely enough evidence to sustain
- 12:43a charge despite what the chief said at the time.
- 12:47Wow.
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:49Put a pin in that for now because it wasn't his only overtly sexual misconduct.
- 12:55Oh, I can't imagine that would be it.
- 12:58Yeah.
- 12:59Usually, we don't.
- 13:00Yeah, it's kind of a...
- 13:03Becomes a pattern far too often?
- 13:06A female officer, a single mother of a six-year-old daughter, detailed numerous conversations
- 13:13both in person and over the phone, including in her off-duty time, that occurred as a means
- 13:20of trying to coerce her into having group sex with him and his wife.
- 13:25Was his wife involved?
- 13:27Yes and no.
- 13:29I think we're going to have a little bit of an opportunity to revisit that in greater
- 13:35detail.
- 13:36So interesting.
- 13:38Yeah.
- 13:39Did I mention that she was also trying to make detective?
- 13:44Hmm.
- 13:45I don't think you did.
- 13:46Yeah.
- 13:47If you did it, it went over my head.
- 13:48I didn't.
- 13:49I'm...
- 13:50I...
- 13:51Like, I literally put it in my notes.
- 13:53Did I mention?
- 13:54I don't know.
- 13:55I can't trust my own brain.
- 13:56I mean, that's fair.
- 13:58Same.
- 13:59God.
- 14:00Yeah.
- 14:01So, of course, he is like trying to...
- 14:02Yep.
- 14:03And this is literally the type of shit that brought on.
- 14:07It brought about the Me Too movement because as someone who's in a position of power, this
- 14:14is her livelihood.
- 14:15She's a single mother.
- 14:17And a lot of people would feel like they have no other choice.
- 14:22For real.
- 14:23It's a very sad and desperate circumstance that you could be put in.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31What year did you say this was?
- 14:33So, at the time of the rape allegation, that was 1988.
- 14:42Oh, okay.
- 14:43So, like, not even close to the Me Too movement.
- 14:47No.
- 14:49Not really.
- 14:50Yeah, we're like not really.
- 14:51It's like not...
- 14:52Not at all.
- 14:53Not at all.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:55Like, 40 years later.
- 14:56Yeah.
- 14:57Oh.
- 14:58Ugh.
- 14:59In case you hadn't guessed, today, our story is about a bad cop.
- 15:10You know, one of those bad apples we keep hearing about.
- 15:13Here.
- 15:14Stinky.
- 15:15Yeah.
- 15:16A really deeply troubled man in more ways than one.
- 15:21Or as he was described by an article by the news tribune, a human resources newt.
- 15:29A joke.
- 15:30A roadmap of wrong turns and bad decisions.
- 15:34Geez.
- 15:35That's a really good way to describe it though, the human resources newt.
- 15:39Yeah.
- 15:40Yeah, because that's exactly what he is.
- 15:43Yeah.
- 15:44And that is on the less serious end of the spectrum.
- 15:50But enough about his professional feelings and misdeeds for now.
- 15:55Don't worry.
- 15:56We'll totally come back to that.
- 15:59So neither she or her family were familiar with the term at the time, his wife, Crystal.
- 16:07Formerly known as Crystal Judson or more affectionately, Crissy Boo, all, was all too well-equainted
- 16:15with her husband's frequent gaslighting.
- 16:19He would send her flowers anonymously, calling himself a secret admirer.
- 16:25According to a accused Crystal of having an affair when she questioned who sent the flowers.
- 16:32What?
- 16:33This is some seriously psychoshit.
- 16:38Meanwhile, he was the one trying to coerce female officers into having three sums.
- 16:46I mean, that's how it goes.
- 16:48The one who's cheating accuses the other one.
- 16:50Yup.
- 16:51Cheating.
- 16:52We know that ain't the pot.
- 16:54He closely monitored the odometer on her car as well as her weight.
- 17:00Why?
- 17:02He may have made some particularly questionable comments about her appearance that have been
- 17:10documented in a number of the sources that I used for this.
- 17:18Hmm.
- 17:19I'm sure he was a perfect kind of guy, huh?
- 17:23I mean, he was relatively physically fit, but yeah, I mean, she was a very petite woman.
- 17:34But it's about control.
- 17:35Oh, yeah.
- 17:36It was all about control.
- 17:37Yeah.
- 17:38And of course, it extended to their finances as well to say that he was tight-fisted would
- 17:44have been an understatement.
- 17:47While he couldn't prevent her from having pockets, he wouldn't allow her to have a checking
- 17:52account.
- 17:56And I didn't actually specifically add this into my notes.
- 17:59It's just something that every time as I've been proofing my notes and thinking about this
- 18:06case, it just keeps flooding back to me from the book that I read.
- 18:11And somebody, I think it was a family member of hers that talked about at one point they
- 18:19were with Crystal and she was like, I don't know how I can get away.
- 18:28Like he gives me this crazy type budget for groceries for, you know, our whole family
- 18:37and he's checking her odometer.
- 18:42Like she literally can't go too far.
- 18:47And they said that as she's telling this story, she was like, at this very moment, I have less
- 18:57than a dollar available for gas.
- 19:05She had like 50 cents in her pocket.
- 19:09Now granted gas was like less than a dollar back then.
- 19:13And that's, you know, a single gallon.
- 19:18I just the way that he controlled her in, I mean, every aspect of her life, their kids'
- 19:28lives really, really scary.
- 19:35Scary to be in that situation.
- 19:36Yeah.
- 19:37Yeah.
- 19:38Knowing like on the other side of it could have been worse too.
- 19:41Like I have experience with this stuff and it wasn't as severe.
- 19:47But like if I had stayed, right, I'm sure it would have gotten that experience.
- 19:52Things have a tendency to escalate.
- 19:54Yeah.
- 19:55That's usually how it goes.
- 19:56I mean, we all want to believe that things will get better, right?
- 20:00They get better if you leave.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:04Even if you have 50 cents.
- 20:06Yeah.
- 20:07I mean, just.
- 20:10It's just, it's such a classic story.
- 20:13Yeah.
- 20:15Initially, Crystal's parents had steered clear of any conflict within their daughter's marriage
- 20:21unaware they were seeing warning signs, which I will say as the parents, it's a smart
- 20:27strategy to not, you know, getting gross or but your head in with, you know, your kids'
- 20:34family life or marriage until there's a problem.
- 20:39And when they're, you know, when it became apparent to them that something was really wrong,
- 20:45they were leading the charge to try to help Crystal and their grandchildren.
- 20:53That's great.
- 20:54Yeah.
- 20:55Yeah.
- 20:56Yeah, the kids make it like a thousand bazillion times harder to do anything.
- 21:00For sure.
- 21:03Even petty arguments and emotionally abusive or coercive behavior gave way to physical violence.
- 21:11David would still claim to be the victim of abuse at Crystal's hands.
- 21:20She couldn't have weighed more than 120 pounds soaking wet.
- 21:24Sorry, I'm laughing because I am.
- 21:27It's so unbelievable.
- 21:29Yeah.
- 21:30It's so unbelievable.
- 21:32This is like a man who outweighs her has, you know, we're talking about potentially, I think
- 21:40he probably had somewhere between 60 and 80 pounds on her.
- 21:45He's probably, you know, yeah, maybe not a full foot taller than her, but like I'm sorry,
- 21:52the physical advantage.
- 21:55And that's not to say that men aren't abused.
- 22:00And even in a dynamic where this falls, oh, yeah, for sure.
- 22:05But that is so not what was happening here.
- 22:08You look at all the other evidence and it's like obvious.
- 22:12It's obvious who is abusing who when you see all the like other things that they will do.
- 22:17Exactly.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:19Exactly.
- 22:20However, despite all the established threats and conflict after 12 years of escalating degradation
- 22:26and disagreements, Crystal was ready to leave.
- 22:30Her decision was likely hastened in no small part by her husband behaving suspiciously as
- 22:39he prepared to leave for his evening shift one night.
- 22:44We're going to talk about this a little bit more.
- 22:47Okay.
- 22:48Because there's some really important aspects to Crystal's background that inform this scenario
- 22:56and make it all that much more heartbreaking.
- 23:02He tried to get her to handle his gun before he left.
- 23:07And we're going to talk about why.
- 23:09Okay.
- 23:10We'll come back to that.
- 23:14So I have a lot of notes.
- 23:19A lot of notes I have actually some excerpts that I'm going to read from the book that I
- 23:27used kind of to supplement what information is out there from really great like newspaper
- 23:36articles and things.
- 23:39There are a couple of specific excerpts that I'm going to read.
- 23:42We'll do like a little Patreon bonus because I think it's really important to understand.
- 23:48One of these pieces of her background and the logic behind it.
- 23:54It is chilling.
- 24:00I understood in a way why that made her so fearful.
- 24:05I think there's, I think you can just understand that someone is behaving really strangely.
- 24:12And I think there's intuition piece of it but there's so much more to it and it just, it
- 24:22brought me to tears.
- 24:23It was just, it was too much.
- 24:26And you're going to read it to us?
- 24:29I think you need to know that piece of it.
- 24:34I think it's important to understand about Crystal and about the situation.
- 24:40So yeah, I'm going to read it.
- 24:44Within weeks Crystal had packed up for her parents and taken the children with her and even filed
- 24:50for divorce.
- 24:51Wow.
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:53I mean that's like she put her big girl pants on and she was like, listen, I'm afraid of
- 24:59him and this is dangerous and but I have to make a change.
- 25:06And that is a really, really hard thing to do.
- 25:09Yeah.
- 25:10And usually takes more than one dry.
- 25:11Yeah.
- 25:12Oh gosh, and the kids.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:14At work, David droned on and on about his failing marriage to anyone unfortunate enough
- 25:24to have lent a willing ear.
- 25:26We fix it.
- 25:27The chilling details of David's abuse would only be revealed in court papers once her
- 25:35mind was made up.
- 25:37Crystal stated he had tried to choke her four times the very same year he had been promoted
- 25:45to chief.
- 25:46Oh, she also detailed threats he'd been leveling against her with his service weapon.
- 25:54God.
- 25:56Prompting her to move out and initiate the divorce proceedings.
- 26:01Still, even with 70 pounds and nearly a foot of height on Crystal's much smaller frame,
- 26:08David claimed Crystal was the abuser in the brain family home.
- 26:14I know he touched on that, but I just, it's just shut up.
- 26:22Just shut up.
- 26:24All right.
- 26:26Now, this next part taken word for word from my source material.
- 26:31As far back as 1996 court papers indicate he was telling gig harbor police that he was
- 26:39being physically abused by her and was ashamed to admit it, possibly laying the groundwork
- 26:45for a defense should his abusive habit come to light.
- 26:50Geez.
- 26:51He's just a sneaky little snake.
- 26:54Yeah, I mean, playing the long game, I guess.
- 27:00Crystal's parents, Lane and Patty Judson could stay out of it no longer.
- 27:05They would become domestic violence advocates henceforth.
- 27:12Like them.
- 27:14We didn't even know what domestic violence was until this happened to our daughter.
- 27:19Her father said.
- 27:22The thought that their daughter's husband might threaten that he could snap her neck if he
- 27:28wanted to was a new and alarming sensation.
- 27:34The whole family seemed finally to be aware of just how violent and unstable David
- 27:40Brame could be.
- 27:43It should come as no surprise that Crystal had tried to leave before.
- 27:50In 1998, Crystal was scared, miserable, likely some combination of both at every waking moment.
- 28:02And she was motivated to try meeting a divorce attorney secretly in downtown Tacoma.
- 28:12Starting to her father, David Brame showed up unannounced and took over the meeting.
- 28:20How did he know?
- 28:23Adding that his son-in-law had several officers sit in a police car outside the attorney's
- 28:28office.
- 28:31Though Crystal's father would attempt to assist her in setting up another meeting with
- 28:35an attorney following that incident, it would be roughly another five years before
- 28:41she filed for divorce in February 2003.
- 28:47It reminds me of the, was it murder at the end of the world where she tried to leave him
- 28:52and went through this whole crazy thing.
- 28:54I won't get into it.
- 28:56And then he was there.
- 29:00Yeah.
- 29:01Because it's like I own you and I know everything that happens.
- 29:07You can't get anything past me.
- 29:10But David Brame was not one to give up easily.
- 29:16After all the mind games, playing cat and mouse clearly amused him.
- 29:21He continued gaslighting Crystal and claiming he told everyone she was crazy.
- 29:27Worse still, he threatened that if she tried to leave, he'd take away their kids.
- 29:35The intimidation didn't stop there.
- 29:46At an April 10th divorce-related court hearing, he appeared with a show of force that would be,
- 29:46I think even if you were a cop yourself, it would prove intimidating.
- 29:52I mean to nearly anyone.
- 29:54By his side were three other to come up police officers, which is like why?
- 30:01Yeah. What fucking role did they play in your divorce proceedings?
- 30:07One of them was assistant chief Catherine Woodard, a woman.
- 30:13Uh-huh.
- 30:14Okay.
- 30:15Yeah.
- 30:16It's not the first and not the last time that I came across her name in this story and I
- 30:23got to say there's a special place in hell for women that let men get away with terrible
- 30:30things and are terrible to their fellow woman.
- 30:40Not saying that Catherine is or did or allegedly.
- 30:46Allegedly.
- 30:47Allegently.
- 30:48Hmm.
- 30:49Yeah.
- 30:50So, um, she would later become briefly the acting chief.
- 30:57Uh.
- 30:58Yeah.
- 30:59David isn't going to be the chief forever.
- 31:01Mm-hmm.
- 31:02I, but I can't imagine why.
- 31:07She was placed on administrative leave as of May 1st.
- 31:12This year?
- 31:14Uh, new.
- 31:15Oh, I was going to be of what?
- 31:17Yeah, it's going to be of 2003.
- 31:19Um, and it's going to correlate with some very specific events that take place and, um,
- 31:26so I'll have to say about that.
- 31:28Okay.
- 31:29Speaking to the impact of that show of force for Crystal, those closest to her shared that
- 31:36she felt that she had to go up against the entire police department.
- 31:40Well, yeah.
- 31:41Clearly.
- 31:42Because she kind of did.
- 31:43Woodard would go on after some very troubling events that happened that, um, I'm going
- 31:51to tell you about in a second.
- 31:53Um, she would say there were no warning signs, which further reading has proven to be
- 32:01in surveys that's a lie.
- 32:04Where's, where's more when you need them?
- 32:07I remember reading the passage and going, are you fucking kidding me?
- 32:11Yeah.
- 32:12No warning sites.
- 32:15So we're just lying to each other's faces now.
- 32:18I can't wait until you tell us all the warning signs.
- 32:21What?
- 32:23No, Kathy's trying to get my goat now too.
- 32:27Okay.
- 32:28Okay.
- 32:29Two weeks before the incident, Crystal complained of intimidation and death threats by
- 32:39her recently estranged husband.
- 32:42She called 911 after a weekend transfer of the couple's two children turned ugly.
- 32:50Daddy, brain brought assistant chief Catherine Woodard along for the exchange because of course
- 33:00every custody exchange needs a police escort.
- 33:04Wow.
- 33:06A group of officers learned of the incident and anonymously sent a note to the city manager
- 33:13seeking an investigation into the inappropriate behavior.
- 33:19The complaint was essentially ignored.
- 33:22I know you're shocked.
- 33:23I was like, yeah.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:27Oh, okay.
- 33:29The city manager essentially stated that he wouldn't respond to anonymous complaints.
- 33:36Which seems like I don't think you get to decide that actually.
- 33:41I think you need to investigate that.
- 33:44Okay.
- 33:45Yep.
- 33:46It's anonymous.
- 33:47It doesn't matter.
- 33:48It's a guy called and said someone's murdered on the street, but it was anonymous.
- 33:52Yeah, it was anonymous.
- 33:53Probably not real.
- 33:54Yeah.
- 33:55So I mean, he's dead, but it's a bummer because the complaint was anonymous.
- 33:58So what are you thinking about it?
- 33:59Sorry.
- 34:00Nothing to be done.
- 34:01Anonymous.
- 34:02Oh my God.
- 34:03There's so many examples that tie this bitch into it that I forgot about.
- 34:08That's, I thought this was where I was going to tell you the thing that makes her a dirty,
- 34:12dirty cunt.
- 34:13And that's not even the thing.
- 34:16This is a different one.
- 34:17Oh God.
- 34:18There's so many things.
- 34:19She's fucking terrible.
- 34:22Assuming she wasn't like being threatened by him.
- 34:25I mean, maybe she was, but she does some stuff that.
- 34:29Okay.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:31Anyways.
- 34:32You guys, we have something really exciting to share with you.
- 34:39Let's hear a few words from our new pod besties.
- 34:42Hi, I'm Shaun.
- 34:44And I'm John.
- 34:45We're the hosts of Sins & Survivors, a Las Vegas True Crime podcast.
- 34:49Each week we cover important true crime stories from Nevada, focusing on the Las Vegas area.
- 34:54We cover current cases in the news, as well as cold cases and missing persons, but there's
- 34:59a twist.
- 35:00Our focus is primarily on crimes with a domestic violence component.
- 35:04Sins & Survivors is centered on the victims and the families they leave behind.
- 35:08Our goal is not only to tell the stories, but also provide victims with resources to help
- 35:12in their own lives.
- 35:14We're focused on Las Vegas, but as we'll remind you in every episode, what happens here,
- 35:19happens everywhere.
- 35:21So listen now wherever you get your podcasts or just visit Sins & Survivors.com.
- 35:26Check them out, creepy people.
- 35:28You can find their info in our show notes.
- 35:33Days before the incident, as word of Braim's divorce and allegations of domestic abuse were
- 35:39becoming public.
- 35:42The city manager continued with what had essentially become the party line that the chief's divorce
- 35:49was a civil matter and again declined to take action.
- 35:55Just so they want to do anything to them.
- 35:57He's like, I'm really not interested in commenting on that or taking any sort of action about
- 36:04any allegations made against the chief that is not of interest to me.
- 36:12April 24, 2003 was Crystal's 35th birthday.
- 36:18That night, her soon-to-be ex-husband called her from Las Vegas, where he was attending
- 36:24a labor management seminar.
- 36:26He said, I have a really big birthday gift for you.
- 36:32But you'll have to wait until I get home because I have to give it to you in person.
- 36:36I don't want it.
- 36:40Just the thing, if it was anybody else, I would have assumed that was a dick joke.
- 36:44I didn't even think about that.
- 36:48Yeah, it's cute.
- 36:51If your nice husband's calling you from Vegas, I hate you.
- 36:53I miss you so much.
- 36:54I got a really big present for you.
- 36:57Yeah, no, it wasn't that way.
- 36:59Was definitely in the horror movie.
- 37:03When the call's coming from inside the house, type of situation.
- 37:09So it was specifically the following day, April 25th, when news stories really seemed to
- 37:15hit full force about the chief's divorce.
- 37:18So there's been some things kind of slowly coming out.
- 37:22There's a little bit of information about allegations, and then all of a sudden it's like,
- 37:28everybody knows your business.
- 37:31Like, a lot of it.
- 37:35News of the city's human resources department, they met with city attorneys and discussed
- 37:42what I can only imagine was euphemistically described as an inflammatory situation.
- 37:51Leaders within HR said they recommended placing Braime on administrative leave as well as
- 37:57taking his badge and gun.
- 37:59Yeah, please take the gun.
- 38:03City attorney said they heard no such recommendation.
- 38:11And in light of what happened the following day, it makes sense they'd want to claim very
- 38:17same in their position.
- 38:19No, no, I don't want to.
- 38:24I don't want to hear the end.
- 38:26Yeah.
- 38:27I mean, hey, listen, whether I work in HR or as like an attorney for the city, I'm going
- 38:33to say, I would want to, I would want to play the fifth.
- 38:36I'd be like, nope, never heard of any of that before.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:42Nope.
- 38:43So that very next day, April 26th would be marked by gun violence that in this country,
- 38:50I think we've all been a little desensitized to unfortunately.
- 38:55So sadly, I have a feeling that this might not feel all that shocking.
- 39:03I think we're a little bit numb to the death tolls being in the double digits and the senseless
- 39:10loss of innocent life, even when it comes to children at this point, I mean, but this is
- 39:19pretty rough.
- 39:23Investigators say Brame 44 shot his wife, Crystal in the head, then killed himself inside her
- 39:31car at a shopping center parking lot after what police believe was a pre-arranged meeting
- 39:37Saturday.
- 39:41I don't know that this was a pre-arranged meeting.
- 39:43I think some of the early articles said that it was, but other sources that I read that
- 39:51as kind of the case develops seem to indicate like, no, he cornered her.
- 39:58In his wife, 35-year-old Crystal Brame had been going through a divorce.
- 40:05The day before the shootings, as we all know, allegations that he had abused his wife were
- 40:10made public, though to be fair, they weren't the first.
- 40:17The chief put their kids, Haley, who was eight years old, and David Jr., who was five in his
- 40:25car before getting in his wife's vehicle.
- 40:29After a heated conversation, witnesses reported hearing two shots.
- 40:35Medics found Crystal Brame lying on the pavement next to the open driver's door.
- 40:43Witnesses who saw to come a police chief, David Brame, shoot his estranged wife in a parking
- 40:48lot just south of Seattle.
- 40:53Remember one thing in particular, the couple's children.
- 40:59They were nearby when their father shot their mother before turning the gun on himself.
- 41:06This is a quote from one of the newspaper articles that talked to a witness.
- 41:15The girl was over top of her mother after she had been shot and was pulled off by a witness.
- 41:26That was actually...
- 41:27There's a couple of different quotes in here about the family.
- 41:31This one was Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
- 41:37Another witness to the shooting said, "Anybody that was out here heard the children screaming.
- 41:43They were terrified."
- 41:48Following the horrific murder suicide with Brame now deceased, both his vehicle and workspace,
- 41:54could be searched without obtaining a warrant.
- 41:58The apartment where Brame had lived for just nine days was also searched.
- 42:05No suicide note was found, though Pierce County detectives did take a laptop, along with
- 42:12a briefcase and its contents, as well as a mini cassette tape from his apartment.
- 42:19Beyond that, little appears to have been publicly shared regarding the results of the search.
- 42:26Probably a lot of that has to do with, you know, there's not a trial.
- 42:34And while either her husband was found dead at the scene or just no one cared to report
- 42:40on the details of his status following the horrific crime, Crystal hung to life following
- 42:48the horrific shooting.
- 42:50She didn't die right away.
- 42:52She was with her daughter.
- 42:56Yeah.
- 42:57Her injuries were detailed in reporting.
- 43:05The bullet entered the left side of her brain on a downward trajectory all the way to the
- 43:10base of her skull, causing significant damage on its path.
- 43:16Though she was initially admitted in extreme critical condition with little expectation
- 43:23of survival, she had shown unexpected progress in the following days, impressing the doctors
- 43:31on staff.
- 43:33She was a real like Crystal.
- 43:36By the late hours of May 2nd, however, her condition had rapidly deteriorated.
- 43:45This may have been due to rapid encephalitis, or it could have been due to a possible seizure
- 43:51or other metabolic causes, but the end result was the same, regardless.
- 43:59At approximately 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd, 2003, tests were administered on Crystal to
- 44:07determine if there was any brain activity.
- 44:10There was none.
- 44:13Additional testing was administered to confirm the results of the initial test.
- 44:19Again, there was no sign of any brain activity.
- 44:24Crystal's condition was determined to be irreversible and she was declared dead.
- 44:31She died Saturday, May 3rd, at 4.40 p.m.
- 44:36She lived for a week following the shooting.
- 44:41It's like amazing, but I'm sure it gave all of her family so much hope.
- 44:46I think the worst part is that I think when she first went into the hospital, I don't
- 44:56think that they were hopeful.
- 44:58I think it seems like the communication from the medical staff there was that the chances
- 45:05of her surviving were very slim.
- 45:07Even if she did, the damage that had been done to her brain at that point was so severe.
- 45:16But the fact that she came in and she was in really bad shape, and then seemingly she
- 45:24starts what might have looked like, "Oh my gosh, is she going to make a miraculous recovery?"
- 45:31And then out of nowhere, just declines again.
- 45:37I can't even imagine.
- 45:41I think no matter what you're told, the fact that she's...
- 45:45She's still here.
- 45:47So they had a week of grieving her because she's not there.
- 45:56Yeah.
- 45:57But until she actually passed, I feel like you live in this limbo and you can't really fully
- 46:05process that loss and that grief.
- 46:10The only right side is that she didn't die that day.
- 46:15They got to say they're goodbyes to her.
- 46:19Obviously she wasn't conscious.
- 46:24The earliest research on police who perpetrated domestic violence came out in the 1990s, finding
- 46:32that 40% of officers surveyed had assaulted family members in the last six months.
- 46:42The research since then has been sparse and highly variable.
- 46:4740%.
- 46:48Oh, sorry, 40%.
- 46:5140%.
- 46:52Jesus.
- 46:53Look to your left.
- 46:54Look to your right.
- 46:55Essentially.
- 46:56That's almost a coin toss.
- 46:58And how many didn't admit to it or isn't reported?
- 47:03Obviously, we know that.
- 47:05That old thing, how many aren't reported?
- 47:07Yeah.
- 47:08And I don't know specifically if this study is generally regarded as having been a high
- 47:15quality study now.
- 47:19Because sometimes we look back and we understand that the controls weren't valid.
- 47:26There's so many things that can invalidate a study.
- 47:32I just don't know if that's a case with this one or not.
- 47:34I would say it's pretty believable to me.
- 47:37I don't think it would be lower than that.
- 47:39Yeah.
- 47:40While we may not know the numbers, we do know the power dynamic is uniquely imbalanced,
- 47:48even compared to other domestic violence cases.
- 47:52These officers have been trained not only to act as authority figures within society,
- 47:58but they are also permitted in many cases to use force to enact said authority.
- 48:06And sadly, as has been evidenced, when an officer acts in a way that represents excessive
- 48:12force or undue violence, they may often be legally protected and met by few if any consequences.
- 48:21In some cases, the coupling of advanced training and access to weapons can lead to not only
- 48:30abuse, but fatality.
- 48:35I'm going straight from source material here in this next part because I cannot even pretend
- 48:41to have a more eloquent way to put this right now.
- 48:46I'm like, I'm going to cry and also if I cry too much, then I'll snot all over and I'm
- 48:53shaking with rage.
- 48:55And anyways, the blue wall of silence promotes secrecy around conflict rather than encouraging
- 49:07intervention.
- 49:09Similarly, the development of the warrior cop and a violent form of militarized masculinity
- 49:17empowers abuse while also punishing survivors who come forward.
- 49:23And I also want to share a quote from Carolyn Drake's piece in the Seattle PI, which is
- 49:30always a fantastic source in my experience.
- 49:35Drake violence kills more women each year than breast cancer.
- 49:44End quote, let that sink in.
- 49:48And I'm hard pressed to think of anyone more willing or eager to make a cheap joke about
- 49:54those fleshy fat sex than either myself or Cassie, but in a rare moment of restraint,
- 50:02I'll say this instead, nearly all of us have boobs, probably arguably more of us than
- 50:08have romantic or domestic partners, but still it's the latter that's killing more of us.
- 50:16Right?
- 50:17How many bears kill women in a year?
- 50:20I know.
- 50:21I thought about that several times during this.
- 50:23I'm like, and we're still having this debate.
- 50:30And so many women have put forth like the most eloquent and honestly logical arguments
- 50:37about why their team bear.
- 50:41And you're just like, I'm sorry, it just, we don't even need that level of explanation.
- 50:48Yeah.
- 50:49But thank you for doing it because maybe it'll help some of the dumb dumbs out there.
- 50:52Well, we have to start woman explaining things to them.
- 50:56The statistics grow more and more abysmal as we examine the figures related to women of
- 51:03color.
- 51:04And of course, other minority groups such as transgender women.
- 51:10When Braim was brought on his chief, the salary range for his position was $87,027 to $134,9992.
- 51:26The Tacoma Police Department had a biannual budget of $102,000,000 and employed 378 sworn
- 51:36officers.
- 51:38These stats date back to 2001 before this entire tragedy unfolded.
- 51:47But we've given people a badge with what feels like almost a limited authority.
- 51:57And we've given that to an average person.
- 52:01And we're paying them into the six figures, which a lot of people are going to have a lot
- 52:07of feelings about.
- 52:09But I would argue, let's take it a step further because I think our government owes
- 52:17it to its people to make sure that people on the payroll, especially in those positions,
- 52:26don't pose a threat to the very citizens that they're intended to be protecting or serving
- 52:35in some other capacity.
- 52:38Yeah, it just, it seems like it should be a very logical and straightforward thing.
- 52:44Yeah.
- 52:45But it's not.
- 52:49Should we take a break for tarot?
- 52:50I think we should.
- 52:51Let's do tarot after we...
- 52:54We're going to snack first.
- 52:56Snack first?
- 52:57Yeah.
- 52:58Can't do tarot on an empty stomach.
- 53:00No, we can't.
- 53:01Simply calm.
- 53:07So we're at the tarot.
- 53:08We are at the tarot.
- 53:10And we grab our tarot, book.
- 53:16Okay.
- 53:18Ooh, and she didn't blow out any candles this time.
- 53:21I'm just surprised that that did it.
- 53:27What was her name?
- 53:28Oh, Crystal?
- 53:29Yes.
- 53:30Crystal.
- 53:31This one just popped out.
- 53:33Yeah, and I see it.
- 53:34This was on the underside of one half of the deck, like the first time that I shuffled.
- 53:40Okay, that's really weird.
- 53:43There's a couple like weird...
- 53:44I don't know, it's weird.
- 53:45Oh, it's weird.
- 53:46This is the Nine of Cups.
- 53:50Oh my gosh.
- 53:51It's so weird that I was like, I was asking her name and it's like Crystal and then there's
- 53:56like a pearl in there.
- 53:58Yeah.
- 53:59I count Pearls as crystals, whatever.
- 54:02I think they count.
- 54:04I think they count.
- 54:05Ooh, okay.
- 54:06So we got nine of cups upright.
- 54:09Yeah.
- 54:10It's so wild too, because I just feel like it's such a positive card, but I was seeing
- 54:17it as we're like shuffling.
- 54:19And they're cool.
- 54:20I don't know.
- 54:21Okay.
- 54:22It's the card.
- 54:23I guess.
- 54:24It's a Pacific oyster.
- 54:25Just you know.
- 54:26Yeah.
- 54:27Yeah, she is.
- 54:28Well, and I was thinking as I'm like that one popped out, I might still draw another
- 54:34card.
- 54:35We might have to, because I feel like this might leave us a little bit like, huh?
- 54:39Okay.
- 54:43Keywords are wishes come true.
- 54:46Good luck.
- 54:48Happiness, abundance and generosity.
- 54:53Often called the wish card, the nine of cups is the most fortunate of all cards and both
- 55:00well in any reading.
- 55:03Some decks show a wealthy person, perhaps a tavern owner or in-keeper, sharing his or her
- 55:10largest with others, filling their cups.
- 55:14You've received a position of comfort, abundance and happiness.
- 55:19Now you eagerly share your wealth, your warmth, love, good cheer, and other goodies with
- 55:27people you care about.
- 55:28The universe is smiling on you.
- 55:32I'm like as soon as you started reading it, I just like got her parents, like her, yeah,
- 55:38the vibe of her parents.
- 55:40And like this is like how her life should have been.
- 55:42Her parents were supposed to swoop in and help her out and share their wealth with her,
- 55:50you know, like, help her.
- 55:52Well, and knowing, knowing a little bit more about Crystal's background, because I'm going
- 55:57to read some extra excerpts for the Patreon, I think there's a lot about Crystal that
- 56:04unless you're really willing to kind of dig in a bit deeper, it's not told in the surface
- 56:13level story that I feel like maybe I'm connecting with some of those pieces.
- 56:20I am really interested.
- 56:21I'm really excited to kind of delve into some more of the background stuff that I have.
- 56:27Look out, Patreon.
- 56:29But I'm going to finish the tarot first.
- 56:33Yeah.
- 56:34One thing at a time.
- 56:35Yeah.
- 56:37In a reading about money, you can expect good fortune when this card appears.
- 56:42An investment pays off, you get a raise, maybe even win the lottery.
- 56:48Rather than hoarding your loot, however, you share some with others.
- 56:52Or you give your wife 50 cents for gas.
- 56:55Oh, God.
- 56:56You need to get promoted, though.
- 56:58So I'm assuming that came with a raise.
- 57:03If the reading is about your job, the nine of cops suggest a promotion or landing the
- 57:09job of your dreams.
- 57:10Okay.
- 57:11Well, I think we just found at least one tie-in.
- 57:14Too bad it didn't last.
- 57:16Yeah.
- 57:18You feel fulfilled, happy, and inspired in your work.
- 57:25Whatever you undertake brings success.
- 57:28I can't say that I agree, but in a reading about love, you've learned to open your heart
- 57:36and enjoy a richly rewarding love life.
- 57:40It feels super gross to say in hindsight knowing just how awful he was to his wife and to
- 57:48some of his female employees.
- 57:55I guess I'm trying to subordinate.
- 57:57That's the word I'm looking for.
- 57:59You know, some of the things that God, the things that he said, "Roll gross."
- 58:08Just roll, icky.
- 58:09It gives me the ick.
- 58:15This card may describe a joyful, emotionally fulfilling, committed relationship or an abundance
- 58:23of romantic partners.
- 58:27Interesting.
- 58:28Any actress?
- 58:32There is one.
- 58:33Yeah, somehow she knew.
- 58:34She's which nature is held together by the energy of love.
- 58:44Which is interesting because to me immediately I just become a total smart ass.
- 58:49I go, "Well, what happened was very unnatural."
- 58:55Nature is held together by the energy of love and the opposite energy absolutely rips
- 59:01apart everything that is good and natural for people in life.
- 59:07It does.
- 59:09You saw almost both in this too, like I said, the vibe of her parents.
- 59:17That's what I think this card is.
- 59:18I don't think it's a reading about your love life or whatever.
- 59:22I think it's just the vibe of helping people when they need it if you can.
- 59:29Her parents, I think I have a little bit more information about some of their efforts
- 59:38and some of the things that they've done to try to make the world a better place since
- 59:43Crystal's past.
- 59:44It sounded like they were advocates.
- 59:48The thing is, is very easy for that to become your, that's a hot button thing.
- 59:57Maybe initially in the aftermath, you feel very passionately about that.
- 1:00:02Because time goes on, you move on to other things or you go back to your normal life as it
- 1:00:11were.
- 1:00:12But they have stuck with that.
- 1:00:16It's been a very central focus for them.
- 1:00:20Wow.
- 1:00:21I think that's really, yeah.
- 1:00:23That's what this card was.
- 1:00:25It wasn't any of the other stuff.
- 1:00:28It was a very clear, what's it, a parallel?
- 1:00:33Yeah.
- 1:00:34What it is for the opposite.
- 1:00:36I don't know what I'm trying to say.
- 1:00:37What am I measuring?
- 1:00:39I don't know.
- 1:00:40But yeah, I think you definitely should draw another card.
- 1:00:43Okay.
- 1:00:44Let me read this though.
- 1:00:45It's really short.
- 1:00:47Okay.
- 1:00:48A little paragraphy.
- 1:00:50It has all the same keywords.
- 1:00:53A small spec enters the shell.
- 1:00:56But oyster doesn't know what it is, but it reacts all the same.
- 1:01:00Liquid jewel coats the spec, protecting the oyster's soft body.
- 1:01:05Over and over a thousand times, the oyster patiently builds up layer upon layer of neck,
- 1:01:15neck gray.
- 1:01:16It's NA C R E.
- 1:01:17I'm assuming that's the whatever they're talking about, the liquid stuff.
- 1:01:23Look up neck, neck gray real quick.
- 1:01:25Naker.
- 1:01:26Naker.
- 1:01:27Interesting.
- 1:01:28Okay.
- 1:01:29So this says it's a composite material produced by some mullisks as an inner shell layer.
- 1:01:40So literally part of the oyster.
- 1:01:43Yeah.
- 1:01:44Interesting.
- 1:01:45Okay.
- 1:01:46So it's building up layers of Naker.
- 1:01:51The same material that coats the inside of the oyster shell forms a perfect gleaming sphere.
- 1:01:57It was that's so funny because the other part of it that I sort of left out of, you know,
- 1:02:03the Wikipedia definition is it is also the material of which pearls are composed.
- 1:02:09And it just like keeps, ooh, I have a thing, I have a thing in here.
- 1:02:12Yeah.
- 1:02:13Almost.
- 1:02:14Two more sentences.
- 1:02:15Okay.
- 1:02:16So that's low growth pass so that someone might pop open the shell and feel ever so briefly
- 1:02:23a fleeting moment of incredible good luck.
- 1:02:27Huh.
- 1:02:28So it's like someone is finding the pearl in the oyster shell.
- 1:02:32Yeah.
- 1:02:33The thing I was kind of getting is like there's all of this crap layers upon layers of all
- 1:02:40of this stuff that's like pressuring and building this thing.
- 1:02:45Yeah.
- 1:02:46And it's like a beautiful pearl in the end.
- 1:02:48Yeah.
- 1:02:49Kind of like, you know.
- 1:02:50Yeah.
- 1:02:51You're put through a lot of shit and you're still, you're a beautiful pearl crystal.
- 1:02:56That's all.
- 1:02:57It's so funny.
- 1:02:59I literally was looking at the shell that you gave me and I was like, why do I feel like
- 1:03:06I don't know.
- 1:03:07It doesn't seem like it really.
- 1:03:08Oh.
- 1:03:09But it part of me was like, hmm, I don't know.
- 1:03:13I don't know.
- 1:03:14I feel like that's very sort of that like diamond in the rough kind of a, I don't know.
- 1:03:18That's kind of what I was picking up as well.
- 1:03:22Right.
- 1:03:23Okay.
- 1:03:24We're going to give this the old college try.
- 1:03:25We'll give it a try.
- 1:03:26We're going to give it a try.
- 1:03:27Yeah.
- 1:03:28Yeah.
- 1:03:29I don't know.
- 1:03:30I feel like that's very sort of that like diamond in the rough kind of a, I don't know.
- 1:03:35That's kind of what I was picking up as well.
- 1:03:38Huh.
- 1:03:39Right.
- 1:03:40Okay.
- 1:03:41We're going to give this the old college try.
- 1:03:43We'll give it.
- 1:03:44Okay.
- 1:03:45I think this one.
- 1:03:48Oh.
- 1:03:49Interesting.
- 1:03:50Okay.
- 1:03:51Um, this looks like two of swords.
- 1:03:54Two of swords.
- 1:03:55Oh, okay.
- 1:03:56I know this card is like the, the blindfolded lady with the, yeah.
- 1:04:00We're learning.
- 1:04:01I know it is, I feel like doing a terror reading like every, sometimes multiple.
- 1:04:10Every week.
- 1:04:11It's like, okay, I'm sure.
- 1:04:12I'm going to learn.
- 1:04:13You do it.
- 1:04:14I don't know.
- 1:04:15Right.
- 1:04:16But I'm hard pressed to come up with a better way.
- 1:04:18Okay.
- 1:04:19So our keywords are combined resources, courage, faith, friendship, conflict and balance.
- 1:04:29This is two of swords.
- 1:04:31Yes.
- 1:04:32Oh.
- 1:04:33Interesting.
- 1:04:34I mean, I'm going to read my keywords real quick says, okay.
- 1:04:38In decision, difficult choices, confusion, stalemate, acting with incomplete information,
- 1:04:45blindness.
- 1:04:46Oh.
- 1:04:47So they're kind of, like you had some positive words in there.
- 1:04:51Well, I don't know.
- 1:04:52I mean, there are somewhat, okay, somewhat.
- 1:04:56You guys heard you wrong.
- 1:04:58No, I think, um, I think different books have a different way of kind of interpreting.
- 1:05:05I guess we'll see.
- 1:05:06But yeah, I think those feel very spot on for me.
- 1:05:12Um, in some tarot decks, this card depicts a blind-folded woman holding two swords crossed
- 1:05:20over her chest.
- 1:05:22Two's generally signify balance or conflict or a murder suicide.
- 1:05:29Yeah.
- 1:05:30And so, as well as pairing, I think of the two of swords as the blind faith card because
- 1:05:37it can represent courage and making decisions based on your own truth.
- 1:05:42And in some cases, spiritual guidance.
- 1:05:46She definitely had courage to make a decision to leave.
- 1:05:50Yeah.
- 1:05:51Yeah.
- 1:05:52Absolutely.
- 1:05:53She had to have that, like, the blind faith.
- 1:05:55She didn't know what was going to happen.
- 1:05:57I mean, no.
- 1:05:58And if anything, she had a pretty good idea that whatever was going to happen wasn't necessarily
- 1:06:03going to be super positive.
- 1:06:06The upright two can symbolize balancing the right and left hemispheres of your brain,
- 1:06:12combining intuition with intellect.
- 1:06:16Drawing this card may mean you must make a decision and need to call on both.
- 1:06:22When you say she was using her intuition earlier when he was acting weird that day.
- 1:06:28Yeah.
- 1:06:29Yeah.
- 1:06:31I would say actually that story, which I'm going to get to here when I read some excerpts
- 1:06:37from the book, it calls on her to act on both her intellect and intuition, using both
- 1:06:49kind of the head and the heart.
- 1:06:51Wow.
- 1:06:52Two can also advise you to take off your blindfold and look at a situation, honestly.
- 1:07:00All the people who are blindfolded at the police station.
- 1:07:03Right.
- 1:07:04Or to, you know, look at the situation.
- 1:07:09To me, the first thing that pops into my head is sort of like, it's not going to get
- 1:07:15me better.
- 1:07:16Right.
- 1:07:17That children with this person doesn't mean that you should stay.
- 1:07:21I feel like everyone in this situation had like blindfolds on like you said the parents
- 1:07:25and, you know, realize until the end.
- 1:07:29Yeah.
- 1:07:30I mean, because people see what they want you to see in a lot of situations.
- 1:07:36In a reading about money, the upright two recommends trusting your own wisdom and inner
- 1:07:41guidance in a financial matter.
- 1:07:45Pay attention to your intuition as well as logic.
- 1:07:50If the reading is about your job, you may be confused or conflicted about a work related
- 1:07:55issue.
- 1:07:58Have faith in your own judgment and ideas.
- 1:08:01Sometimes, the upright two represents a job that requires both intellect and imagination.
- 1:08:09In a reading about love, this card suggests listening to both your head and your heart.
- 1:08:14Oh my God, it's like literally what I just said.
- 1:08:17It can mean you and your partner hold conflicting perspectives or that you're trying to resolve
- 1:08:22differences and find harmony.
- 1:08:25Interesting.
- 1:08:26I don't know if one of them was trying to resolve anything.
- 1:08:29Yeah, that feels like perhaps not.
- 1:08:33And the way he did resolve his issues was not the way anyone should resolve any issues
- 1:08:38ever.
- 1:08:39Not the way that we want to see that wrap up.
- 1:08:44That's for sure.
- 1:08:45Yeah.
- 1:08:46Well, should I read this one?
- 1:08:48It's pretty short too.
- 1:08:50Yeah.
- 1:08:51Okay.
- 1:08:52Also for anyone who doesn't know, I don't know.
- 1:08:54We're using the little guidebook from the Pacific Northwest Tarot deck with these little
- 1:08:59stories in here.
- 1:09:02And that was a coast mole.
- 1:09:05Oh, coast mole.
- 1:09:07Interesting.
- 1:09:08All right.
- 1:09:09We've got both kind of like sea shory things, you know?
- 1:09:12Yeah.
- 1:09:13Yeah.
- 1:09:14The mole stopped digging as she sensed a change in the soil ahead.
- 1:09:19To one side, the earth was drier and potentially more stable.
- 1:09:23To the other side, the dampness might mean a more abundant selection of worms and slugs.
- 1:09:29Mmm.
- 1:09:30Delicious.
- 1:09:31It tastes like chicken.
- 1:09:33I love it.
- 1:09:34I love it.
- 1:09:35I love it.
- 1:09:38That sounds right.
- 1:09:40Or maybe she should go deeper where the soil was more densely packed.
- 1:09:44She wrinkled her nose and rested, paralyzed with indecision.
- 1:09:49Her mind sniffing down the infinite, branching paths that the future tunnel before her could
- 1:09:56take.
- 1:09:57But she couldn't deliberate forever.
- 1:09:59The mole made a choice and resumed digging, taking the first blind stats in her journey
- 1:10:04onward.
- 1:10:05Mmm.
- 1:10:06So more of that.
- 1:10:07Yeah.
- 1:10:08More totally tying in with what everything we talked about.
- 1:10:12I would say so.
- 1:10:13Yeah.
- 1:10:14The mole was interesting.
- 1:10:16I don't know.
- 1:10:17He, I felt like he kept her like small and like hidden.
- 1:10:20Yes.
- 1:10:21Like people were abusive do that.
- 1:10:23Yeah.
- 1:10:24They keep you and your tunnels and you have to like dig your way out from underneath them.
- 1:10:29Yeah.
- 1:10:30Do you think that's really interesting kind of both of these acting in like acting as metaphors
- 1:10:37in maybe more than one way, but also another one you're like in the tunnels in the ground
- 1:10:46in the dark and then once you escape you're in the light, you're free.
- 1:10:50You're a pearl.
- 1:10:52Okay.
- 1:10:53I'm done.
- 1:10:54You're a peach.
- 1:10:55You're a peach.
- 1:10:56You're a pearl.
- 1:10:57Hey, listen.
- 1:10:58You're a crystal.
- 1:10:59A juicious, ripe, this peach.
- 1:11:02There's still always going to be someone that doesn't like peaches.
- 1:11:06That's true.
- 1:11:07And is a total dick and will behave in a completely unacceptable and abusive manner.
- 1:11:13And then I'm sure that's how the quote ends.
- 1:11:16Yeah.
- 1:11:17I'm going to add on to it.
- 1:11:19Yeah.
- 1:11:20And then there's other people who will eat the shit out of that peach.
- 1:11:24Mm hmm.
- 1:11:25I love it.
- 1:11:26I don't know what kind of face.
- 1:11:27I don't know what kind of face I made if it was a trotious, talon, feel free to blur it
- 1:11:33out.
- 1:11:34It's a little smiley face over it.
- 1:11:37Oh, we definitely keep the sound effect because that was really good.
- 1:11:41Yeah.
- 1:11:42One more.
- 1:11:43One more.
- 1:11:44Well, we hope everyone is safe out there.
- 1:11:49And if you are experiencing any sort of domestic violence, we're going to link a website
- 1:11:55for you just to have the resource just in case.
- 1:11:59And we love you and we hope you're okay.
- 1:12:02And have a creepy ass day.
- 1:12:06See you next Tuesday.
- 1:12:07See you next Tuesday.
- 1:12:08We'll be here.
- 1:12:09Yeah.
- 1:12:10I mean, probably.
- 1:12:11[laughs]
- 1:12:12[music]
- 1:12:13What if it's a Boober?
- 1:12:14Yeah.
- 1:12:15Yeah.
- 1:12:16I mean, probably.
- 1:12:17[laughs]
- 1:12:18[music]
- 1:12:19What if it's a boober?
- 1:12:20A boober?
- 1:12:27Was that like a new hip uber or?
- 1:12:30It's like an uber but with boobies.
- 1:12:35You are a 14 year old boy.
- 1:12:37You know?
- 1:12:38My Blink 182 shirt.
- 1:12:39Yeah.
- 1:12:40Yeah.
- 1:12:41Yeah, never more fitting than for that comment. pnwhauntsandhomicides.com
