- 0:54[SPEAKER_04]: It is the Kurt Wagner month on the Grey Milk and Lane Show, and on the Patreon, we're going to be jumping all over exploring different aspects of Kurt Wagner as he exists in the X-Men world, one of my all-time favorite characters, and today we're opening with the BAMPS, who are characters you probably do not like very much.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_04]: I'm thrilled to be joined by my friends, Minolas, Bimbunas, and Seth Martell.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_04]: Let me have you both introduce yourself to our guests, let us know your name and pronouns, and tell us your initial thoughts on the BAMPS.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_04]: Amps.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_04]: I'm anola's welcome back to Grey Mocking Lane, have a new year.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: Happy new year, thanks for having me back.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm my nolison bunis, I'm Greek, my pronouns are he-see, I'm a sometimes comic slater, mostly known for my young blood run, the bumps are much, much, much creeper than I remembered from my childhood, let's just start with that statement and go from there.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: And welcome, Seth, to Martell, hi, Seth.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Chad.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so happy to be here today.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_02]: I love night crawler, and I still don't like the bumps.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I will wait for you, too, to convince me otherwise.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, but let's be clear.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_02]: I don't like the meather.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, if you like them, there might be a problem with you.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, just still not a fan and less of a fan probably before this and maybe more after this.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_04]: So, do you prefer the bumps or the X babies?
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, the X babies.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, okay, because I think they're both awful.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, it's not a big part.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_02]: I like Mojo world, so I do, I'll give the X babies that, that leg up.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_04]: We're gonna open on the BAMFs with just Saturday morning cartoon energy and when I was, I don't know much about your upbringing.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_04]: I know Seth and I are both kids of the 80s.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_04]: I'm a little older than Seth, but I
- 2:34[SPEAKER_04]: I'm thinking like Saturday morning, you wake up at five o'clock and like portable of like extra sugary cereal.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_04]: You're like in your PJs and you park out in front of the TV, all the ads are for toys.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_04]: It's obnoxious cartoons.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_04]: I grew up with so many from the masters of the universe, to the smurfs, to kissy fur, to the Ninja Turtles, to, you know, like there's so many.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_04]: And you would watch all morning, the cartoons would go from like five to 10.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_04]: Unless there was a rerun and then you're like,
- 3:02[SPEAKER_04]: because VCRs were a thing you could record the cartoon sometimes, but we didn't have DVRs or replay unless you like purchase the movie.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_04]: This is like the American tale era of American cinema.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_04]: Seth, were you a Saturday morning cartoon kid?
- 3:16[SPEAKER_02]: I was.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_02]: I would try to set my alarm for 8 a.m. but if I got up extra early it wasn't a cartoon that kids incorporated was on.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I slept to that one a lot, but by eight, the cartoons proper had started.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember even in the comic books it would have like a double page spread of the cartoon schedule?
- 3:32[SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah, he's made every year for like the new cartoon lineup that was going to hit the next year on each network because you had to pick which network you wanted to watch because you could only do one at a time?
- 3:41[SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_04]: I've put back in fourth of, yeah.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: What were some of your favorites as like a little kid?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yummy.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I was obsessed with Spider-Man as an amazing friend,
- 3:49[SPEAKER_02]: But I did recognize your a slight nod to gummy bears with your your BAMP theme song.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_04]: I tried to go I tried to go gummy bears and Smurfs both of which I watched a lot as a kid Would you have watched the the BAMPy BAMPS probably I watched all this stupid shit, so I think these were they were cartoon for
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: I've tried to watch some of them like on a like a holiday special.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_02]: I have you have y'all watched this death Christmas.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just coming off a Christmas for this recording.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: Have y'all watched this Smurfs Christmas special?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, my children with no list you haven't.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man There's a lot of anybody else.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: It's terrible.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's on YouTube.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_02]: There's a there's a song they sing at the end that's the worst song you could ever ever hear
- 4:25[SPEAKER_04]: My children have very little patience when I show them cartoons for my childhood, but usually whenever I watch something that I love does a kid, we're talking like little, I don't know, care bears and like shirt tails, and there was some really obnoxious cartoons in the 80s, and this is where the BAMPS come from, like 100%.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_04]: What was your relationship to cartoons growing up?
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: We grew up on American cartoons as well.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think we started having private TV channels from 1991 or so, and they had a morning TV zone, the two of them, started from 7 until 12 every weekend, and we did get the Spider-Man cartoon, the Thundercuts,
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: X-Men cartoon was so big, Dragon Ballet, etc., so we were hooked in front of the TV using the VCR, but my absolute favorite was, as well, Spider-Man, his amazing friends, which was not on TV.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: I had to lag my VCR over two Athens because I didn't grow up in Athens, and go to the video store there and just come out for the whole holiday and what's Firester and Iceman.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_04]: I have never watched Spider-Man in his amazing friends.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_04]: That's one that escaped my radar.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_04]: I've watched a couple of isolated episodes for the show specifically.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_04]: Would they feature a character that I'm doing in like the Daily Battles or something?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_04]: But Seth's going to be joining me for the Graham Walken Lane retreat in Palm Springs next year and I have some Spider-Man and amazing friends plans while we're there.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_04]: So it'll be a fun Saturday morning, cartoon dive.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_04]: Now, okay, night crawler is a lot of different things.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_04]: And one of those is the, like, kid hero, right?
- 5:53[SPEAKER_04]: He's the, the fluffy, when we think of BAMP, I think the first thing we think of is the BAMP doll.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_04]: It's like the plushy, which by the way, no one makes.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_04]: He's also a demon and he's Romani and he's a circus performer and he's a priest and he's a superhero and he's a freak and a monster.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_04]: There's all these kinds of things.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to be exploring this character from a lot of different lenses, but today, we get to go BAMP.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_04]: Now, we start with Saturday morning cartoon energy, and then these characters, which are not really connected to other versions, but they become very, very, like, demonic and kind of hyper-sexual.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_04]: And they also kind of a sign of childhood innocence along the way, as well.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to just jump in, though, because these characters just have to be talked about kind of chronologically.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_04]: I said, do you want to start us out in 1982 in uncanny X-Men 153?
- 6:41[SPEAKER_04]: This is Dave Cockroam and Chris Claremont with Kitty's Fairy Tale, which to my knowledge, you had not read before until this show.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_02]: I hadn't, no, this is the very first time I read it.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_02]: What were your thoughts?
- 6:52[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I kind of avoided it because sometimes it was silly at the so it's not for me, but you know, you understand like the child, like the audience for the X-Men is a really broad range of ages.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_02]: So I can see how like a little kid would really enjoy this wish fulfillment of another little kid.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_02]: It was cute.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_02]: It was very sweet in the end.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_04]: or even the idea that there's a lot of different types of characters on the team.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_04]: Can you have a Wolverine story one month and then Kitty telling Eliana, a fairy tale in the next month?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_04]: And then go to Storm and Africa the next month after that.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_04]: You know, the the mixing of genres is always kind of been magical for the X-Men.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_04]: This gives like already in leech energy.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's like it's like that little kid's face.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's very sweet, very very sweet.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_02]: I also really like how they open in this entire issue with an actual acknowledgement of damage to the X mansion and having to deal with a major battle that's like for something in the X mansion, I think like when you're going to depart from like a full adventure, I think it's really cool that there's a reason for the pause and I thought that was really,
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: an awesomely smart piece from Claremont to just start with to be like, hey, we're busy, like doing the big people stuff.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: We're like, Kitty, can you go like, do what you're good at since you can't like lift up giant trees and pieces of debris?
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: Like, go inside and help take care of a Viliana and put her to sleep.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, both classes and she go inside and Eliana demands a night time story, which is really sweet.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: And also, you kind of forget how you own Eliana was when she first came to the X mansion that
- 8:15[SPEAKER_02]: no one who magic is or even the teenagers that you really kind of get used to.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_02]: She was just a little kid back then.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_04]: This is very, like when my kids were little, I would tell them stories about themselves, right?
- 8:25[SPEAKER_04]: Like, okay, you're a superhero in a foreign land and there's a dragon that looks just like your dad.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I mean?
- 8:32[SPEAKER_04]: Like, this is giving a lot of that energy.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_04]: It's very cute.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: It is, there's another little small Easter.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of Easter eggs in this entire issue, which is really fun too.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think Claremont just had a blast, like just shoving things in here and there.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_02]: Like a huge nod to the time was that Kitty's wearing an elf question and elf quest was really huge and a big part of another comic book company.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I think fucking hate elf quest.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_02]: So I loved it when I was little because very similar to, you know, a Saturday morning cartoon, you know, I would just try to get in your anything that was comic book like and at our scholastic book fairs of people in America, remember those.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: ElfQuest was actually from being printed in Pekipsy or headquarter isn't Pekipsy at that time.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: So when to enrich your painting, we're actually from my area.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_02]: So they had ElfQuest books there and they were black and white and like printed very old
- 9:22[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it was like, you know, a very fancy printing press back done.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I would hand color them all with color pencils.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: I destroyed all my off-gress, but I loved that was my very favorite part of it.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: So it was a fun little, fun little not to see Kitty wearing that shirt when she's telling the story.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: She goes inside and starts the whole world of Kitty's fairy tale where everybody's been recast and Kitty is a pirate.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: And she's adventuring with Colassus, who she refers to as her stalwart companion or her true friend.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_02]: which is really sweet again.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_04]: But casting you on as older brother as the Gallant Hero.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_04]: Now, in Marvel, just as a quick aside, if you tell a story, it exists as another reality.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_04]: There's a whole thing with like when we were, when we were writing the handbooks, like if nightmare, nightmare exists in the nightmare room, so if you have a dream that a dream exists in the nightmare room and it becomes a place that you can enter.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_04]: So Kitty's fairy tale, just by being told of the page, becomes another reality that's like a playable space, which is interesting, anyway, please continue.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_02]: I looked it up for your chat and have I know you so well it's earth 5311.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: I had that ready
- 10:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so they encounter a wizard as they're off adventuring and that's Professor X and also an outcast Prince who's Cyclops and the two of them are trying to save Cyclops the princess load Princess Jean and she's become possessed by the Dark Phoenix Which I thought was just so cool to see Cochrome finally get to draw Dark Phoenix and see what that could have looked like.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I've never disliked or thought twice about how much I love it burns Dark Phoenix saga But you do kind of wonder what it would have been like had Dave Cochrome drawn it it would have been
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: Very different, very interesting, especially with just how much he loves loves all the outer space adventures.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_02]: And so along their way, they're going adventuring and they arrive on an island where they meet the stupidass band.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: Nightcrawler has been cast under protest on the casting page.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_02]: It's a blue, a small, blue impotella porter.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: He's a mischievous little guy, bam, thing around.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_02]: And Chad, I think you should do the voice of the band for me.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_04]: I think you have an excellent band voice, just waiting to happen.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know, like my biggest question as I read it is as trying to hear who voice in my head if Kevin did it and I I almost want to go like orko from the masters of the universe where it's like And my band finior These are not just Saturday morning cartoon energy voices, you know, like yeah, I'll play it.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's easy and fun I came back because I'm in love with you I don't know whether to die of embarrassment or strangle.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that's a glory.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_04]: No, that's really
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so what's really, I mean as much as I hate the Bams, what's really cute about this tale is that as Kitty's telling these ridiculous stories about her friends, they start to slowly gather around and eat, drop outside her door.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: So they're all listening in, and night crawler pulls Wolverine over.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: What's up, elf?
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: I will drink, don't let Kitty hear you.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: Why?
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: Whisper blast.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_03]: She's telling Aliana bedtime story and is magnificent.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_03]: Listen and judge for yourself.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_02]: Better be good, Fuzzy, because I feel pretty silly standing here and I don't like feel silly.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_02]: But then she slowly starts to tell the story and is making fun of Kurt and Wolverine really, really enjoys that.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: And says that, I mean, I think it's because this little teeny tiny Banff is creepily ledgerous.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_02]: He loves girls, loves ladies, is a creepy little creature hitting on a teenage girl, which is already creepy,
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's all in the fun and light here, so we're gonna give that a pass, but it's awfully weird.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of misogyny and 80s cartoons, friends.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a girl.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: We got, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we got to, we
- 13:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's like all the X-Men are like, yeah, you're totally like a horny bastard Kirk, I'm sorry, but then Wolverine gets like cast as the brainless beast, which is they're like, They don't even bother to draw him as like a real person.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_02]: It's a completely caricature of Wolverine.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: He's beer chugging.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: We're a little creature.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_02]: Storm gets, she's a
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: Genie, but she looks beautiful with her really cool costume with lots of light and bolts.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's super excessive and little kidlike, but I think it's really fun.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_02]: And then on top of it, the airplane gets the bear black bird gets reimagined into a giant black dragon who she named Lockheed, and of course Chad is always good to give us a note how when Lockheed actually first appears, which is 13 issues later, so we're set up for a future of Lockheed, which is really cool.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_04]: Lockheed, who gives real-bamp energy, is all I'm saying.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, the Lockheed, I love Lockheed, the Dragon, I hate Lockheed, the giant bird, Blackbird, Dragon, Steve, and Steve Blackbird is terrible.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not a big fan of either.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_02]: Come on.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_02]: Come on, listeners.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm gonna almost do like any of these characters so far.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: Have you been excited by these?
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there's to be a head, I've brought this with me.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: This was the third equipment comic I ever read in Greece.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, like my first comic was Kitty going off to Massachusetts Academy, and this is two issues later.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the very first time I ever saw Gingray or the Phoenix.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: So I saw here through ketysines, I think that's the interesting part that you get to meet these characters through how these kids see them.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so this magical romantic lady that had a terrible death.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: In my head, Jin was always that after that, until she came back for the next factor.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_04]: So that's the classic, that lady.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_04]: Well, and everybody took a moment to look at just the cover of Uncanny X-Men 153.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_04]: It's like Kitty with a bucket of popcorn and a cola in her hand in front of a big movie poster.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_04]: It says enough for something completely different.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's just it's giving, I don't know, Jim Henson created this film version.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's it's a it's a fun little world.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's almost labyrinth like a little bit.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: It is labyrinth like I like that.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I like that comparison.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_04]: You know, which by the way, Jim Henson, Iliana in this issue has a faulty bear, like, uh, that she's cuddling in her bed.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's a direct muffin up at reference in the end.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like, wraps up as like a really lovely story where everyone's outside her door, listening into the story that she tells where they saved the day and gene actually is saved and her encyclops get to live their happy ever, happily ever after ending, which the team seems to find cathartic and lovely as opposed to her being kiddie embarrassed.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: They all kind of wrap around her.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: a big warm hug, which is I think kind of the point of the story and very, very sweet.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_04]: The map isn't the little misshapen creature.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_04]: He's in love with Kitty.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_04]: He's spying on her from the bushes.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_04]: He, uh, well, there's more, there's more than just him.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_04]: Like there, there's a group of bamps that will like get in fist fights over Kitty's attention.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_04]: Like she's mine.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_04]: I saw her first and like the one has to keep beating up the others to like win out Every you know you get little panels of like the baffes trying to to teleport in and he's like kicking them away I won't say it again.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_04]: Oh wait.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I forgot my voice.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_04]: I won't say it again creeps crap.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_04]: Like there's just Probably the 19 news faster now right
- 16:03[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's very ledgerous in this but it's an adorable story, but also you're that.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's very important to always coming after Dark Phoenix saga that this is where they start to be like a family again and they start having fun again and then they all come together very sneakily outside of the bedroom to listen in on this story.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're starting to feel like humans again with this story.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's it's a very good palette cleanser for the whole line.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_04]: It's a, I would argue to, this is 1982, I would argue that the BAMPS become kind of symbolic in a way of childhood innocence, in the way that Eliana does, because what happens to Eliana later is she gets demonized, right?
- 16:41[SPEAKER_04]: This, the, the innocent character gets turned dark, which is kind of the same thing that happens to the BAMPS, but everyone's no while.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_04]: You see a Banff doll show up in a story that reminds you of innocence, or sometimes a Kurt Wagner places it right in front of his genitals while he lays down on a couch and says to a man to Seth and like come over here and let me fuck you.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_04]: Like the Banff, if you listen to like Anna Pappard talk about this, the Banff is kind of representation know of his penis because Kurt is also a sex symbol and here's this plushie of himself right in front of his crotch as he lays on the couch.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_04]: So it gets very quickly like, that's very uncomfortable with this thought.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm not feeling that.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_02]: I just feel like he just grabbed something and blocked it.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_02]: And they artists thought it was cute, that's gross.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_04]: Well, Kurt's tail is also quite fabric, right?
- 17:24[SPEAKER_04]: Like, there's a lot of times when writers will draw him as very sexualized and his tail wraps around the leg comes between his legs wraps around her arm or face.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_04]: They're like grabs or neck.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's all you have to think of it a little bit in a felt kind of way and the band, I think there's I think there's give you a tail, but a little But damn stuff tiny Kurt is just that's it, but I do think it applies There's also the theory that Paul Smith had drawn him naked in that scene and they had him draw a costume on top of it afterwards
- 17:52[SPEAKER_04]: They get with the vamp in front.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, I don't know.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_04]: It's like the sexy scene where the guys got the pillow or the cowboy hat over is crotch.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_04]: It's giving a lot of that energy.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_04]: This is an infamous image for those that have not seen it.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: Now, just that I looked up just the origin of it.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was kind of interesting that originally it was, it was Cockram's idea and when he told it to Chris Chris was really excited about it.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_02]: notes from this book by Tom DeFelco, apparently he turned in almost a double-sized issue worth of script for this, and Louis Simonson had cut it down.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I thought that was really interesting that it could have been way, way longer, and I'm surprised it actually wasn't an annual, it has like very like X-Men annual field to it.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: I'm surprised I didn't slot it there in the end.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but they did make a whole mini-series as a sequel to it, which we'll get to now.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_04]: So we're going to jump to 1985.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_04]: Now, listen for the net crawler trial at the end of the month on the main show.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to be talking a lot more about the origins of net crawler's creation.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_04]: And I did go into this a little bit in my interview with Payty Greer for those of those of you that heard that last year.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_04]: But Dave created net crawler when he was a soldier in combat.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_04]: It became his kind of most favorite or beloved character when he was brought into the X-Men and Dave's an expert designer The origins of this character.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_04]: He's supposed to be quite demonic, but like very playful And there's just kind of a different energy about him But in 1985, Kalkran who's been going through a lot with Marvel as all creators do it subpoight He gets to come back and do a night-crawler four-issue limited series where he gets to do night-crawler his way and it becomes very Errol Flynn
- 19:19[SPEAKER_04]: It's very adventures of Robin Hood, or Captain Blood for those of you that have seen those very old films.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_04]: And Kurt gets to kind of bounce around these other realities as a pirate fighting evil shark guys, like saving the princess.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_04]: And there's the evil castle, and there is like little races of bodies in this world.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_04]: It becomes a little bit muppets, it becomes a little bit arrow-flin, it also becomes a little bit, I don't know, even like Wizard of Oz, I suppose, there's a lot of just kind of fantasy genre mixed in.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_04]: So focusing is this specifically on the BAMPS, if you've never read the Neck Trailer original limited series, Neck Trailer ends up getting sucked into another world, and then sold by some pirates to sugaring the sorcerer who Neck Trailer thinks of as jaws meets the wicked witch of the West.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a little group of little like smegleshits who walk into the room and they're in the shadows right out of the mirror that's like reflected at him.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_04]: The pirates have been calling Kurt a boggy and he's like, I'm not a boggy, which I just, the image I said you both this morning.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_04]: It likes us, we says.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_04]: Could help us, yes, yes.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_04]: Not one of us.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_04]: Bigger it is strange too.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_04]: Come from somewhere else, it did.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_04]: Not us, but likes us.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, we help it.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes, it helps us.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes, smells wrong.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_04]: It does not us.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_04]: And curses these little creatures own garlic.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_04]: The strain has driven me crazy.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_04]: Little weird versions of me.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_04]: Not make stupid talk is like us.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, is boggy.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes, we is boggy.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_04]: Is we tells it, believes us.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_04]: It doesn't.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_04]: Is dumb if a fully boggy no matter can still help us.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_04]: If you guys don't move, can you get me loose?
- 20:54[SPEAKER_04]: Not so fast.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_04]: We hasn't just fallen off the turn-up truck.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_04]: We hasn't bogginessed, raised, no dummies it didn't.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_04]: No turn-lose without promise, you help, we help.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_04]: All right, all right, he says.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_04]: I promise, help, but you have to tell me what's going on.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_04]: Nasty face sugary wants to learn boggy way of coming and going in a puff of smoke.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, he tried to catch boggy.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_04]: He's making them teach him.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes boggy is not like Nasty face sugary.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_04]: No.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_04]: Nasty face is real prep.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, old sharpie tooth found spally.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, that stops boggy from going fast.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_04]: So there's a spell that stops him from teleporting.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_04]: Fast poof, not boggy's only trick.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_04]: No, boggy's can go into looking glass live in backward side.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_04]: We hide, yes, joke on nasty face, yes.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_04]: He catch boggy's, but not know it.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_04]: Looking glass, good, hidey hole.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_04]: Nebdenal boggy's won't home.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, Shagreen spells trapped in power thing.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_04]: destroy power thing nasty face all of magic go find nasty faces big charm big spell power thing yes yes if i destroy shagreens object of power all his standing spells will be destroyed too and he'll have to start from scratch and may be rescue princess too nasty face have gin jab sabri that's the princess here gin jab sabri which is a great name in tower of London nasty face want to sacrifice
- 22:16[SPEAKER_04]: It's like princess to evil gods, gain much evil power.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_04]: After some crazy adventures that result in the castle blowing up, the princess being rescued and Shagreen falling to his seaming death.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_04]: That crawler was then teleported over to meet the BAMFs, which is a different race from the Boggies.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_04]: The Boggies are the little evil demony guys.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_04]: They're not evil.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_04]: They just have been like enslaved by a Shagreen the sorcerer.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_04]: But when he meets the BAMFs, that crawler's first thought is mine.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_04]: Galt, it's a cabbage patch and that crawler.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_03]: But maybe in the soul after so daddy you've come home.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a band of course Welcome to Bamfile and daddy.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a band for us.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_04]: Bamps live here on Bamfile and daddy So the Bamps live on the island of Bamp where they don't have doors on the houses so they
- 23:02[SPEAKER_04]: can all teleport inside, and they don't have names, and they assure us that they're more than just fairy tales.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_04]: Among them lives Peanies, P-I-N-I-S, who are little fairies, they grow their houses out of mushrooms.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_04]: They all call him Daddy.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_04]: There's dozens of these guys.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_04]: One Banff joins Netcrawler on a quest after realizing that all the girl Banffs could be in danger, and he's kind of horny.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_04]: He doesn't say it that way, but that's very much the implication.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_04]: These are the
- 23:30[SPEAKER_04]: and they're joined by Kitty's fairy tale versions of Wolverine, Kitty Pride and Colossus here in this alternate realm.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_04]: This is why I referenced the Wizard of Oz earlier.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_04]: It's almost like Nightcrawler got bumped on the head and he's having a weird adventure with his friends.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_04]: The Bramp Vamp briefly appears before the real kitty in Eliana and yells,
- 23:50[SPEAKER_04]: and they send him right back, and there's a big battle with a dark band, who is twice the size of Kurt and big and red.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I'm the servant of Shagreen, so under now, and I shall be merciful puny ones.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_04]: You have no hope of overcoming dark BAMF.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_04]: He starts smashing, calling Nightcrawler a fool, and a puny insect, in 4K and Eliana accidentally teleported the dark band to them before sending it back.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_04]: where he said Dark Bamp only pawn in Game of Life.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_04]: Then Little Guy Bamp knocks out a guard, steals his keys, unlocks his cell with all the girl Bamps in it, so all the smurfets have been saved.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my great aunt, Fanny's sour crowd upcakes, I've died and gone to heaven, it's the girls, and he thinks all the girls are locked room and no Bamp thing.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_04]: It's a dream come true, and like an idiot, I'm about to let them out.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_04]: The girl Bamps join the fight, they're also horny and also want to make out with that crawler, and the big dart
- 24:45[SPEAKER_04]: BAMP the gets defeated and turns back into all the little male BAMPs.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_04]: So they got magic up into a giant evil BAMP.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_04]: And then the heroes depart back into the real world.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_04]: I had to do that all at once.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_04]: Can you imagine these characters in your monthly X-Men comics as my first questions?
- 25:02[SPEAKER_04]: My word.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: Seth, what's your opinion on the boggies?
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: I hate this recording as much as I thought I was going to.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_02]: I hate everything about this limited series.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_02]: I truly do, is why I didn't read it.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: I've seen enough clips from it that I realize this is not even slightly for me.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's everything I hate in a comic book.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's actually super indulgent and really stupid.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's me.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: And now I am enjoying this recording more than I expected.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: So it's good that you have buffens of the spectrum view.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_04]: We've got all three versions of the BAMPS here.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_04]: Seth is the dark man.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_04]: You know, this is the boggy, and I'm the regular BAMPS.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: Don't perspective from each.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm feeling silly pleasant night, I'll put this podcast on and just hear you narrate this very tell to me the voice is very amazing I think you're gonna have you just gonna have nightmares, my friend You're a fan of this limited series.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: I am I had already 20 came out.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't written in Greek.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: I read it much much later But I think it's Dave Hawkroom just having fun and this is getting the essence of night color.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: He gets dressed up as a pirate.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: He gets to save princesses.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: He gets to visit
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: a different dimension every episode by five giant stone snakes save the girl over and over again.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: Dark sorcerers.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: Dark sorcerers loosely based on the wicked wits of the West.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: There's not much to hate the only thing that I noted when I was reading it with the adult lenses.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: Just how creepier the bumps are here like they're making straight up essay references.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_01]: The one you mentioned, all the girls me a locked room and no bumping.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: this is a dream come true like oh yeah they can't escape me now and I'm gonna let them go I'm not gonna have non-consensual intercourse with them damn I'm very quickly becomes a reference for like fuck right we know bam girl like it how did this so print how was this okay even in the 80s it's a very 16 candles sort of approach to adolescent hornyness I don't think it's aged well but it's the sort of beauty oh yeah I'm
- 27:13[SPEAKER_04]: But it's also all over Saturday morning cartoons, if I'm honest, like, if you go back and watch cartoons from the 80s, it's full of veiled, thinly veiled sexual humor.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_04]: So the dancers are not referenced all the time.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_04]: They're a little bit infrequent.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to jump forward in time a little bit to the year of 1998.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so with jumping up to Excalibur 117 to 119, this is Ben Rhab, Mel Ruby.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is right after the Warren Ellis run, so they're trying to do a bit of house cleaning.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: Warren Ellis very controversially had hooked up the kitty pride and the much older bit with them, because he thought he was over 18, no one else agreed after it came out.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: So this is their house cleaning to...
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: get them to grow, to break up.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_01]: I call it the kitty and play kitty and bit need to speak trilogy.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_01]: Kitty has just been in her minis, she's just been an agent of sales, she's just meant a very forgettable drink of sild name Rick Beans is coming back full of guilt because they almost kissed.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_01]: She's coming back to a moor island that is just infested with bumps.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen a few issues before that he was searching for Lockheed in the basement.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: The basement was filled with dark highs and not only teeth in the sados, which were little bumps chasing Lockheed and this is giving like chucky vibes.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_04]: It's like animated dolls with glowing eyes that grab a knife kind of energy, which is a funny Lockheed story you have to admit.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: It is so tight.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: All of it is so tight.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: I had written sideplay about five times in my script and I had to buried down.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_01]: They are much nastier than we had gotten used to them before they say things like, you can run plug-in, but you can never hide from all of us.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: You're the punk over!
- 28:57[SPEAKER_04]: But we also, I almost want to go more demon.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_04]: They have lines like, nab them, grab them, spear them, stab them.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's, they're evil little shits.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_01]: They go really dark.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it all takes off in one, one, eight.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: They, it's called Dark Knight of the Bumps.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's with a gorgeous gorgeous zone Casade.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: However, it's the only time we see a Bumps so low in a cover and it's just beautiful.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: And it started with, uh, it was a Fortnite past new years, and all through its calibers come.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: Many accretor were steering, most inexplicably, a bump.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_01]: And we see it is a little bump to dull, coming to life, and getting a really nasty green on its face.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_01]: And it's, can I just say for a second, like, of all the times, like, what a waste of junkacity.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's so sad.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: This was when he was first coming up, I think he used first cover work was here, and he's getting so much better, he's used here.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: No, it's a beautiful cover, they could have had anything, and they're like, you know, you should draw for your, for this cover here is, is it stuffed animal?
- 29:50[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I'm so excited.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: So they start talking in random bombs and... And Ren, please don't understand.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: Don't knock up to Titi's damn dragon and huck off his head.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then what you said, no beam drum him, smear him and stab him.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: Basically what they're saying is, if they can't have Titi's heart, no one can.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's a weird mix of a child's play with Toy Story.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's all the toys that have gone unloved and forgotten about.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: They just come alive and go out to kill everyone in the house.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very interesting topic, so they go around the island.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: They start setting up death traps for a lot of kids and they're very fun death traps like they have this big round boulder of a precipice that they're trying to get rolling on that look with a big stick lever.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're trying to drown certain kitty in certain vested waters.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: When they do all finally figure out that it is the bump starter after, CT tries to explain that, you know, I created them with our fairy tale.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: Character-sacred when I was talking to Elyana, they're fragments of my imagination, but they're not having any of that.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: They're going...
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: You created us, gave us life, made us love you, but then they forgot about us.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_00]: All because of them stupid, mumbling mouth gagging.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: It flaps its wings, but it says, queues for yourself in one.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_00]: You're phoning a lover that's lame in isn't so tough kindling up with us.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's weird.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_04]: When I was, I love, I love that you're just going there with me, thank you.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_01]: That is next.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: You can't avoid it for long.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: You have to tell them, you have to do the bump voice.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_01]: Which is, which begs the question.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_01]: They say it's been cuddling with them for how long have they been pretending to be bump adults and for how many years.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_04]: Well, the reveal here is that Nightmare has like possessed the Banff dolls with little demons, right?
- 31:43[SPEAKER_04]: So as soon it was a relatively recent when the it's, you know, it's the evil dream god possessing it's labored again.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's it's he's the goblin king and he's possessing the the stuff animals with little evil spirits, right?
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's very with yeah, so Nightmare shows up he's the big bud.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: He's their boss.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_01]: He's hired them to
- 32:02[SPEAKER_04]: I love nightmare, I ate to do the trial of nightmare on my show, but it just doesn't fit any time soon.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_04]: I love him.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: I know that he's used for this sort of stories, where it's let's explore the characters.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: But when I read it at the time, it felt very first to be honest.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: Now I appreciate it more.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_01]: Nightmare Sousa, he has a kid's lock hidden hand.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's trapping all of the Excalibur characters in their own personal nightmares.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: And this is where the bumps get very essay again.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: So they go to him.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: They're like,
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: Markov, on the Goods Nighty, we've fulfilled our end of the deal.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: Now we want pretty giddy.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: Gonna take her back to the crib and show her how much we love scare.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: With no, nope, nope, nope, hard, nope.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: And it's really shows this how twisted what used to be like oh cute kids mimicking the behaviors of adults like all.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: Look at him, his girl crazy, he's trying to ask the girl out.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: How quickly this can go into insult territory when they grow up and become very corrupt.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very, we are telling a little bit with the narrative that trying to discuss here, which is Kiti having to grow up to fast, basically.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: This is a very nice and super speed.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_04]: This has been RAD writing.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_04]: I love Ben Benz, a good friend of mine.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_04]: And he's playing in the X-Men sandbox, right?
- 33:15[SPEAKER_04]: If we're going to tell stories about Night Curler and Kiti, it's fun to take it to this place.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_04]: It's giving very, uh, like, campy horror films, though.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_04]: We watch a lot of cringe movies at my house.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_04]: I'm remembering a few years ago, we watched the film thanks killing.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_04]: And it's meant to be cringe, but it's a murder turkey.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_04]: and it opens in like 1492.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_04]: There's a pilgrim woman running through the woods topless for some reason, and the turkey's chasing her down.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_04]: And just before he murders her, his only words in the beginning of the film are, nice tits, bitch, and then he stabs her in the heart.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_04]: Later, there's a girl getting fucked by her boyfriend, and the turkey kills the lover, and then starts fucking the girl.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, yeah, you're getting stuffed.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_04]: It's you
- 33:57[SPEAKER_04]: Like, there's a whole genre of terrible horror.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's what Ben's trying to do here.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_04]: And it's own kind of way.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_04]: It's Iki because it's the Banff dolls.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_04]: But I, you know, it has a certain charm, I think.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's Iki because we know the message cute things that we gave a passion because they're so cute before in the 80s.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: And now the creepiness is turned up to 11.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_01]: And it makes you take a step back.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: And it's doing it very brilliantly, I think.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_04]: Well, and there's a whole genre of like puppet films too, right?
- 34:26[SPEAKER_04]: Like we we love the Muppets.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_04]: We love like wholesome or kid puppet shows.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_04]: But then we go dark puppets.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_04]: If it's anyone seeing Avenue Q has anyone.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_04]: And it's like there's whole there's whole mirror puppet movies and like puppets having sex.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_04]: Like there's a whole genre where it's just fun for people to take the childhood innocent thing and just make it the worst darkest, easiest thing because we're afraid of it, right?
- 34:47[SPEAKER_04]: It's gross.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_04]: It's not my favorite genre, but I do understand it.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look at this lattice by favorite theater character, so if it's making a revival now, if you're coming back this year, very excited.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you want to see a puppet singing about his porn addiction, right?
- 35:00[SPEAKER_04]: Go to have him too, just don't like him.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_04]: So when we were talking about like the horror versions of childhood innocence, the worst version of this, this is weird, but there's an entire genre of like cartoon pornography or like cartoon role play porn.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_04]: There's like people painted like Smurfs in a like fuck video out there.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_04]: There's people who have done full length movies of like Batman or X-Men porn parodies and sometimes it's animated.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_04]: You get like Simpsons porn and family guy porn and it goes in all these odd directions.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_04]: It's there's something for everyone out there folks, but the darkest version of that is the porn version of our children bit like memories.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_04]: Do you guys have thoughts on that category?
- 35:43[SPEAKER_04]: Because it's ikki.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean, I don't mean to kink shame.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_04]: If you love it, I'm here for you.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_04]: But for me, it's ikki.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_04]: No thoughts?
- 35:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious now, but I think I've run into a flinchstone spawn at some point, but they're very vague, really, my brief.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_04]: There's only version, there's Mario porn, there's Legend of Zelda porn, it's everything, there's Pokemon porn friends, and we don't look it up, this is nothing's I watch, but I talk to people, so...
- 36:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm happy for whoever enjoys whatever consulting is I consenting cartoon adults are doing The band with a little too child like for me to joke about but if they're consenting cartoon adults great have yeah If you assume the smurf's are adults that makes it a little more comfortable
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: I assume they are.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: They must be.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they have smart children, so that means the rest are smart, but just I mean Gargamel gets kinky y'all.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_04]: That's all.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_04]: Gargamel.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_04]: That's trying so hard.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_04]: I told Seth, your favorite characters, Nightcrawler, I've got just the episode.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_04]: I'm gonna cover a lot of things really quickly.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_04]: Nightcrawler, as you get into genres, there's certain characters or certain writers that get the opportunities actually explore Nightcrawler from a lot of different lenses.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_04]: Then Rab gets to do it some in Excalibur.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_04]: We see some of that with Sysperia in the Krakowa era.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_04]: And Jason Aaron gets to play in the sandbox in the Wolverine in the X-Men, amazing X-Men era as well.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of writers only do one version of Nightcrawler, like he's just the priest, or he's just the tortured miss fit, or he's just the teacher, but if you're going to get Nightcrawler stories, there's an inevitably going to be a parallel to the Bamps along the way, because that's part of the playing field, it's the cutesy little kid version fairy tale plushy side of this character.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_04]: So we see these characters reference just every once in a while in the Mary X man holiday special there in there they're they're in one image where they're dressed as elves well night crawler Santa Claus which is super cute then we get arcade as has a Banff doll that show go lee ends up with a jubilee's kid.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_04]: In Deadpool volume 8, number 9, there's a few bumps in a weird panel with a bunch of other weird creatures like broods and mindless ones and war wolves.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_04]: This is the Alyssa Wong Deadpool run in Xman Blue Origins, which is the issue where Mystique gets revealed to be Knight Crawler's father slash parent and destiny as his mother.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_04]: Legion has like lost his body and has created a little persona for himself as a bump who is in Kurt's mind.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_04]: through this series until we get the reveal that it's Legion.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_04]: But in the X-Men blue issue, he's almost acting like the narrator.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_04]: He's the person telling you the story.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_04]: You get images of the little Legion Banff jumping around as the narrator.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_04]: On Kenny X-Men 168, going way back, is the infamous bands of Banff over the crotch shop.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_04]: If you want to go check that out.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, and in that crawler volume four number one, again, go to the net crawler episode at the end of the month that crawler has several volumes of comics more than people realize I think we see that shot recreated except this time net crawler surrounded by little angel banks.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, so Legion of X number three we also get an image where there's a nightmare on the astral plane and night crawler has manifested both blue bumps and red bumps the blue ones are working with him the reds are working against him.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_04]: which is the era we're going to spend the the next portion of the episode on because we get a long vamp front through the Wolverine and the X-Men post schism era.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know them as the elves in the Christmas issue.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_04]: That's cute, right?
- 39:08[SPEAKER_04]: I could even see Seth drawing something like that.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_04]: You're very nostalgic for the holidays.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's something about like a it's an echo or a leftover bit of Kurt.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_02]: Like there's something cute about it but they don't have a lot of personalities except for just looking like a hoard of elves.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_02]: So it's very different than the bounce that we've just
- 39:26[SPEAKER_04]: and they're not trying to fuck kitty, so it's better.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's very good because none of them after the 90s ever tried to sleep with had one, which is very good.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_01]: They've traded one voice for Latony, basically.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's always seem to be interested in after the notes, which is good.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: This is usually mentioned the X-Men Blue Origins.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's a superior, it's sort of a Greek chorus roll, he's given the lead on his pumpkin.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's very funny, it really colors that is here.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: But otherwise, it's very throw away.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_04]: It's very beautifully drawn.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_04]: And this is that color and has spider-man error, which I'm actually very fond of.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_04]: And for those that have listened to the X-baby's episode that I did with rage gear, we have a similar conversation.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_04]: We talked about 80s cartoons where we had baby versions of all of our favorite superheroes, right?
- 40:07[SPEAKER_04]: And we watched them go on adventures.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_04]: It's them up at babies in the Rugrats or whatever.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_04]: The X-baby's also have this trope.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_04]: We get the very silly baby version of them.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_04]: We get the darker version.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_04]: We get the version where they're like little zombie, X-baby's stomping around at a recent comic book.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_04]: So we love to do this with these child characters and the BAMPS kind of fit into that trope.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_04]: In Wolverine in the X-Men, there's a huge cast of characters.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_04]: Wolverine and Cyclops have split ways, and Wolverine has opened the gene grade school for higher learning, which is hilarious.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_04]: Gene's dead, but he named it after God's dead wife, which is funny to me.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_04]: And he's the headmaster here.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a bunch of characters.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_04]: The school grounds are on a clone of Krakawa.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_04]: And they're just where we're seeing characters from all over the X-Men mythos mixed together.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_04]: In a huge cast, it's wildly fun.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_04]: I know people hate the Toden husk stuff in particular, but overall this is a delightful series.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_04]: We recently talked about this in more detail in my episode on I-Boy for those of you that heard that in December.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_04]: But part of this Wolverine, you know, likes to drink in his office.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_04]: He's the principal.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_04]: He's the drunk he likes to have beers.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_04]: And there's little blue lamps that are kind of all over the school, causing mischief.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_04]: If you read Spider-Man in the X-Men, there's a scene where they teleport, spider-man sure off, while he's telling, like, teaching a class of students and they're stealing Wolverine's beer and hiding out in the office.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_04]: I am not gonna cover these characters in detail, but they're all over this run.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_04]: Take a look for them as you go.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_04]: They're just about,
- 41:31[SPEAKER_04]: One of the things that makes, well, they even join in the fights with Zanto Starblood and the Hellfire Academy, but one of the things that makes them stand out.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_04]: If you guys saw the X-Men movie, X-Men 2 back in the early 90s, where Alan Cumming comes in and plays night crawler, they do a version of Kurt that's kind of covered in markings and tattoos, or almost religious symbols, and that's what these bands look like.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_04]: They're covered in like these little markings or etchings, and they never speak.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_04]: And some of them look like really old men, and they love to drink a lot of beer.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_04]: In Wolverine in the X-Men 42 we get a flash to the far future where there's an old man Wolverine who's still the headmaster And there's a bunch of crop property like elderly BAMs who are still drinking with him and still hanging out all over the school You missed out one key detail.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: They don't work loads anymore.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're making and starting from here They will never work loads again, and there's no explanation for this
- 42:23[SPEAKER_04]: And sometimes they're drawn like little demons and sometimes they're drawn as little cutesy cartoons.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, it's uncomfortable.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_04]: You have to assume they're crotchless, I hope.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think what I like about this run so much is that it occurred, occurred has been dead.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I think in a way they remind me of the feeling of like Wolverine's memories of occur echoing the halls.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_02]: So I think I kind of interpret them as like,
- 42:42[SPEAKER_02]: Wolverine is taking this on all by himself and he has these little reminders of what Kurt would be doing in the mansion as, you know, as a jokester, as a prankster, like they they kind of hit all of the Kurt Beats for him and they kind of keep him company when he's alone.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_02]: There's like something very sweet and charming about how they're employed here.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_04]: Alright, Bruce here, Kit and Megas here, Oya, or Adia O'Concos here.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_04]: There's some featured characters, and a lot of the characters just kind of play off them, but we get gladiators kid and rolling in the school, and Dup is one of the teachers, and it's just it's a ton of like mixes of genre as we go very body horror, very comedy, very superhero adventure, but Jason was also playing the long game.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_04]: He had a chance to really explore characters, and his plan was always to resurrect Knight Crawler, and the BAMPS become the tool for him to do that.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: No, I liked what Seth said, because if you look at it, he's made a school, he's named it after his dead girlfriend, he's put a statue of her, and the school is filled with copies of his dead best friend.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's very sudden, the bumps are sort of a through line through the whole run, it starts with them, it tends with them and still in whiskey, it keeps things light all the way through.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, that's it!
- 43:50[SPEAKER_02]: Take it as like, you know, if you think of the bans in these couple of stories, Kitty's version of Nick crawler is like, he's kind of like a electric old man.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_02]: And Wolverine thinks of him as like a very sweet best friend who keeps him company.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, who's like playful and funny and silly.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, also it's like, you know, the lens of the writer too.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_02]: But I really like how he's used to how they're used to here.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he was used to drinking by, so what he remembers most is them going after a whiskey of the time.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_04]: Jason could have written blivering in the X-Men for 200 issues.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_04]: I would have been thrilled.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_04]: I really enjoyed this series.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_04]: It's a little of its time, and it's not perfect, but it's great.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_02]: And it's perfect, but it sure is really good, yeah.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, good.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_04]: Again, go see the eyeway episode every moment.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_04]: Eyeway gets on panels delicious.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_04]: And there's 50 characters running around.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_04]: But he kind of, I don't know why Jason left the book.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_04]: I've never met Jason, but it ends up transitioning into amazing X-Men, which is Firestar coming to the team, which was a big deal at the time, because she'd never really been a huge part of the X-Men.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_04]: And it's the Nightcrawler Resurrection story, and it's almost feels like Jason Aaron doing Dave Cockram's Nightcrawler series, but a little bit more epic.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_04]: So Nightcrawler is in whatever version of heaven that mutants end up, and I almost wonder if this is like the white hot room and the Phoenix yanked him into a little side reality, because she loves him and she didn't want to die.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_04]: That's not canon, but that's kind of my thoughts.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_03]: So the blue lamps are hopping all over the realm.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, beasted gets it so annoyed with them as we open babs.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_04]: The wretched creatures have been infesting this school since the moment we open, hiding in the walls, stealing random bits of equipment, drinking Logan's whiskey, but now the little monsters have finally gone too far.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_03]: They stole my coffee maker.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_04]: So it turns out that the BAMPS have, they find a portal back to heaven, and they found one, and they need the X-Men to get there.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_04]: So they are hanging around the school for all this time, and now we wanna learn what their actual purpose is.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_04]: So Nick crawlers up in heaven, and his dad, and by the way, everybody, the next episode out on the Patreon after this, I've already recorded it, is a Zazel with my friend, we run price, and a Zazel's creator Chuck Austin is with us for that one.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_04]: so you don't want to miss it.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_04]: But Azazal is here, Chuck had never read the story, would we talk about it?
- 45:52[SPEAKER_04]: Azazal is here in his best like pirate uniform, and he has a group of little evil red bands, where Nightcrawler has his little happy blue bands.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_04]: So there's good and evil, the sun versus the father.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_04]: We soon learned an issue for that these bamps were born in the depths of hell.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_04]: Here's the origin story.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_04]: Their mother was a giant maggot.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_04]: Their father, a changeling in the form of a face-eating lampory.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_04]: Their babies were forgotten as soon as they were born.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_04]: Left to die.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_04]: On the Brimstone Plains, we have a mention of the Brimstone Dimension, which is what Nightcrawler teleports through, by the way, when he is teleporting.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_04]: Left to die on the Brimstone Plains, but there they lived, there they survived in the very shadow of pandemonium, as scavengers, as gremlins, as things lower than the lowest beast of the pit.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_04]: And it was there my father found them on one of his raids, he found them starving, living off the scabs of the damned and the devil's sewage, and so my father fed them.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_04]: He fed them all the blood they could swallow his blood, which changed them, remade them in his image, bound them to his evil.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_04]: will.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_04]: And that's my father's army grew and the raids continued.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so in the exact episode, we pause it.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_04]: And this is a silly pausing, but Azizil has a bunch of kids and they all look like him.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_04]: And my argument is perhaps his secondary mutation makes his offspring take on his form somehow.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_04]: He's like the most powerful sperm you've ever seen.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_04]: It's crazy.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_04]: They're going to read the Draco.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_04]: They all look like him, all of his children, with all of his baby mama's.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_04]: But here we have him feeding these little pustule, maggot, demon, bottom feeders, his blood, and then they become bound to him and take on his little red demonic form in their own way.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_04]: So eventually night crawler, who's telling the story, finds the red bumps, and they make a deal, and night crawler feeds them his blood, and the bumps turn blue, and he also trades his soul to them.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_04]: And when he is allowed, I'm skipping over some shit here, because it's an epic pirate adventure in heaven, which is fun, and there's huge ships, and the X-Men all get to dress like pirates.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_04]: But in the end, Nightcrawler gets resurrected with no soul, but the demon babs who can change their form become the substance of his body.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_04]: They like make up a Nightcrawler body, and then his mind gets transferred into it.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, oh,
- 48:05[SPEAKER_04]: weird version of cloning and when it comes back to life throughout the rest of this series and in the Claremont Written Nightcrawler series, he has a whole little army of bumps that just teleport around with him as his little sidekicks and it lasts for a while.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_04]: These guys have a bunch of appearances.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to review all of them.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_04]: This episode would be way too long if we took it BAMF by BAMF.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_04]: But what are our thoughts on this adventure of Nightcrawler in Heaven?
- 48:28[SPEAKER_04]: It is gorgeously drawn mostly by Edmigenus, by the way, it's delightfully drawn.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_01]: He makes them look so beautiful the bum.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_01]: They go back to the Dave Cochrome design.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: But why would they want his soul?
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like they become so cute now, and then they're like Mr. Stoffelies, and they bargain for his soul.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's, they are true demon bumps.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's way.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_04]: Souls are like the currency of hell in a lot of ways, right?
- 48:53[SPEAKER_04]: Like it's like gold in hell or heaven.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it comes back like in the night roller series, I think he can't get into heaven anymore because they have his soul, he basically can't die, but it's fun to go back this two throwbacks of that are very interesting.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: One is that we've seen them melts before when they did the dark bump in the original series.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: We know they can melt to make other bodies and then they can be thrown away.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: And also now that we know that night Carlos Bodys made out of bumps, his penis is an actual bump that can detach and he can throw it at people.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: This is the second demonstration that we're bound to see at some point.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_04]: Speaking of souls, that's how magic is her story, too, right?
- 49:32[SPEAKER_04]: Her soul gets sucked out a little at a time.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_04]: We saw that story in X-Factor where strong eye trades his soul because when Layla Miller resurrects somebody, it's without a soul.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_04]: Like, so this becomes currency and magic crumbs quite often.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_04]: Our Seth, what are your thoughts on the, the net crawler and heaven story?
- 49:46[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's, I'd be the art is amazing and, you know, I guess there's some, for the pirate lovers in the, the crowds.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to remember how far off this is from Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_02]: If, if this was like a marvel kind of trying to get on the pirate fanwagon or something.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's correct.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's because there was just pirates all of the sudden in all media, you know, pirates who were just a thing.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's, you know, kind of suits my crawler and suits his smosh buckling ways to bring him back.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't my story, but I'm sure, you know, I understood why people loved it.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: I find I found it a very weird resurrection choice to make him up of bumps, but, you know, you're just creating, siloct out of resurrecting her out of what bits and dust and nothing and, you know, power of the mind.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_04]: Here's the most crucial story.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_04]: The BAMPS were originally created because Katie told a story, but are the origins of the boggies and the BAMPS this?
- 50:37[SPEAKER_04]: Do these little demon creatures exist?
- 50:39[SPEAKER_04]: And they've gone into other realms where they form little societies.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_04]: Is it net crawler fetus blood to some demons and they created the BAMPS race?
- 50:48[SPEAKER_04]: Possibly.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_04]: Very, very chickenar, or the egg kind of a child.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_04]: So one of these bands and this is where it gets weird and again, we are not going comprehensive.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_04]: This character could have literally his own Patreon, but God do I not want to do it.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_04]: It's men's second series by Colin Bund in Xmen Blue.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_04]: We get a team of interim Xmen, including some of the time traveling Xmen.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_04]: So Scott.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_04]: brought us here as a teenager.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_04]: Beast is here as a sorcerer, weirdly.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_04]: Ice Man is here.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_04]: This is Teen Bobby, like, learning how to be gay.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, kid of maga.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_04]: It's a fun little series.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_04]: Again, that just draws all over the X-Men worlds to bring threats in.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_04]: But there's a whole member of the team who is a BAM.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_04]: It's a little naked night crawler who has the name Pickles.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_04]: And he eats junk food, which he needs to refuel.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_04]: Right, he has to have energy to refuel.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_04]: He rides around in glove boxes.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_04]: He teleports the team on missions.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_04]: And he doesn't talk.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's, everyone seems very affectionate.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_04]: Almost like he's a little pet or like a parrot that rides around on their shoulder.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_04]: Or like a kitty that curls up in the drawer.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_04]: I really dislike this character.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_04]: He's fine.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_04]: He has over two dozen appearances.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_04]: He appears with some of your favorite obscure X-Men characters.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_04]: He helps fight some battles.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: Poor pickles, that is for pickles, I mean he's meant to be a member of the team, he's like he's on the cast page of every issue, but they don't rest him, they keep him inside the literal cupboard, that's where he lives, and they just have a headset on him to help him teleport and with him junk food and have a tablet.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_04]: and then when he needs to go outside there's so embarrassed of him they put him inside the backpack I don't think they ever have holes for him to breathe it is so strange thank god this character doesn't talk oh my god if he could talk it would make it so much worse but it's kind of odd I don't know what of the bands just takes on like a whole identity uh stuff do you like pickles and by that I mean the vegetable
- 52:35[SPEAKER_02]: I like dill pickles, sweet and sour suck, but I really like a dill pickle.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_02]: But this pickle is like the team pet, and I find it weird to choose like a human team pet, like a mini human team pet, but you know, that was part of the story.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_04]: Well, it's their teleporting device, it allows them to get around for superhero adventures, but he has like Kurt's full powers, and he's quite powerful this band.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_04]: He really goes places, I don't know.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_04]: I don't understand this character.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_04]: He might not.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: What is worse, having pickles in the backpack, or when Wolverine was tipping a dozen bumps on a least it.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_04]: I think let's just leave all of the damps in their weird smurf realm and let's just send them all out.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_04]: Pickles can go have a happy life in smurf village locked in a room with all the female damps.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_04]: They'll have a great time.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, here's where I want to end the conversation.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_04]: Let's go back to the childhood innocence of it all.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_04]: In Avengers number 389, this is just a couple of examples, Death Cry, who is the tortured Chiar girl from space who joins the Avengers and might be Death Bird's daughter.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_04]: She comes to Earth and we see an image of her sleeping with a little Banff doll.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_04]: Most prominently in Uncanny X-Men 303, Iliana Rasputina, who has been de-aged to a child, dies of the legacy virus while holding a Banff doll.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_04]: which is very, very like innocence lost.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_04]: And if you go over to X-Men Volume 2, 24, Jubilee's crying while holding a Banff doll and Excalibur, number 74, Jubilee sends the Banff doll that Iliana died with, too kitty over in Excalibur as like a gift.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_04]: So there's something about like the grief and loss and like innocence of like a childhood toy that is where these characters started and where I'd like to finish after all of the crazy journey we've taken.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_04]: My question for you, both, is, did you have a childhood stuffed animal that you were largely connected with?
- 54:23[SPEAKER_04]: Then I'm so tell us about it, and then I'd love to hear your thoughts on the vamp as this representation.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think I did.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_02]: I had, I think I had a Kermit and a Grover.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's, I had like a few options, but I don't remember being super attached to them like the vamp for doll.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_02]: Anything more, but related would have been close to a vamp for doll to me.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I didn't have one either.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I had a bump doll, and as you said, I'm very surprised and I've very list one.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's so crazy.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_01]: They have them in the universe, but not out of it.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no one is made and no one's printed a BAMF doll.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like it was selling hotcakes.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy, they made a Duf plus doll, which I bought obviously, but they haven't made anything with Kurt very weird.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_01]: But this story, I mean, I hate you for this, because I read it today and I cried again in the honest death in the moment where the only thing you really can do to help us pick up the bump doll from the floor and give it to her to hold this is dying.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's such a good story.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_01]: And it's very nice because Kitty gives the doll to Jubilee saying, oh, I gifted this to Liana when she was your raid.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I'd like you to have it, so it goes around.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's a bit of a sister of the travelling bump-toe.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_03]: That way, it happens.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very sweet sequence.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_01]: And it's nice how the three books were interconnected that year through that bump-toe going from title to title.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_04]: Um, I'm going to get very sentimental and almost overshare here for a moment.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_04]: I grew up in a pretty abusive household and sometimes refuge from the noise and violence that was happening in my house became either clutching a stuffed animal while like curled up in my bed and like trying to find safety and I would talk to my stuffed animals.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_04]: I had a little gray stuffed raccoon that named Ricky that I had for a few years.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, but I also had that relationship with our family dog.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_04]: I'd like climb out on the dog house and like tell the dog all my secrets.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_04]: So this is very BAMP cute, right?
- 56:03[SPEAKER_04]: But then imagine either of those getting possessed.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_04]: I'm turning red eyes.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_04]: I'm giving it, I'm giving it come back at me.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_04]: One of the ways we make characters work and beloved, we give them a visual, we give them a gimmick, or we give them a sound effect.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_04]: So Wolverine, it's a snick, they're at a snack.
- 56:19[SPEAKER_04]: For Rogue, it's pulling the glove off for different characters.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_04]: You store Storm's eyes, go white.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_04]: There's like these visual cues.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_04]: For Kurt, it's the purple cloud with the sound effect, BAMF.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_04]: And BMAF is a delicious choice.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_04]: It's characteristic, you never forget it.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_04]: What are your thoughts of BAMF as a sound effect for Kurt accompanied by his signature sulfuric smell?
- 56:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think since the beginning, Kurt has been seen as,
- 56:45[SPEAKER_02]: It smells, it's repulsive, he's scary, but, you know, he also, he's bringing you somewhere and he can take care of you and he's wonderful and caring and I think it's the perfect balance for Kurt always.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_02]: Like, he seems awful, smells like my smell awful because he smells like sulfur, but he's actually the wonderful charm and caring character that he is.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_04]: I think I sent this to you, but Rambo Raul just wrote the Spider-Man holiday special.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_04]: And there's one panel of Spider-Man giving Knight Crawler, like pine tree air freshener and he's like, you know, he's probably like a lamp smells.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: It fits him very well, because it's an extension of his personality.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's very bombastic, so you get a big bum every time he shows up.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_01]: And the smell adds to the antithesis.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like, yeah, he's demonic looking, but he's so nice.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: But then he also has a nasty smell when he teleports.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_01]: I like that one panel in the nightclub mini, where a bump teleports in front of him.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, oh my god, this is how I smell.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_01]: People have to put up with it every time I go away.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_04]: It's a fun character choice as he passes through Brimstone, but as we're talking, I'm realizing, oh, do you prefer the sound BAMF as a fart or as a fuck?
- 57:52[SPEAKER_04]: Because we're using it for both, like babe, want a BAMF, and then BAMF is leaving the stinky smell behind with a little fart cloud, like it's just dawding on me.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I mean?
- 58:01[SPEAKER_04]: Uncomfortable realization perhaps is Kurt's teleport just a fart every time.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_02]: Oh god That mean might that but he does smell like a fart right mid-release smells like sulfur every time Rock nags.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yep, the mention of farts got it.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_02]: Most of it's do you all smell of your closed smell after you teleport with Kurt probably?
- 58:18[SPEAKER_02]: That's bad.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_04]: That's bad
- 58:19[SPEAKER_04]: Yep, that's unpleasant for Wolverine, and especially although maybe he likes the smell.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_04]: There's like certain smells we like that are gross, right?
- 58:25[SPEAKER_04]: Like gasoline or grass or whatever.
- 58:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he smells, he smokes so many cigars.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_01]: I doubt he.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_01]: And the thing maybe that's why they're best friends is the only one who can put up with the smell.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_04]: What would we do with these characters?
- 58:38[SPEAKER_04]: Like is there a story we want to see?
- 58:40[SPEAKER_04]: Is there something we want to know?
- 58:42[SPEAKER_04]: Is there some potential unrealized?
- 58:44[SPEAKER_04]: I do think there's really much like the X babies for like arcade has a murder world with like a dark BAMP robot in it that fights the X men.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_04]: It's like a play on continuity without diving too deep.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_04]: These characters used infrequently is the best choice for me, I think.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_04]: It'd be fun to see like a sugary in the sorcerer team up with spiral or something, right?
- 59:04[SPEAKER_04]: Like the evil wicked witch shark that night crawler thought coming for revenge, that could be fun.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm personally I hate it when some characters are ubiquitous, they're ever present, and then they just go away because the writer changes and we've had the bumps just be a staple of the mansion and the expert for so many years, and then they just
- 59:23[SPEAKER_01]: stop being anywhere, so it will be fun for an annual or a holiday special to just checking on them and see how they're doing maybe their angry, that people have forgotten them maybe they're up to some other mischief.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't want them to be around at all times again, but I think checking in on them every five years will be fun for a special.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_04]: All right, so I call you up and I say, hey, I have excellent news.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_04]: Tom Breaver is allowing you and I to do a four-issue limited series for Marvel together, exclusive contract.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_04]: It's about the
- 59:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, the bands would gather together and give up their lives to save my crawler and be forever.
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I had an idea, I had an idea.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because we've seen that the joining of the bumps can be reversed.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_01]: What if something happens and can't break it down to 12 individual bumps?
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_01]: And he's not just way too smart.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_04]: What are the wishes were to open the new year on Grey Mocking Lane?
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really excited for that color month.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_04]: Follow the show at Grey Mocking under score lane on Instagram, most prominently.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_02]: Well, recording is a little bit.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_02]: always early, so I have no idea what I'll be doing in January, but hopefully something really fun, and otherwise you'll definitely see some of my X-Men or fun artwork on Instagram at SC Martell, or something, probably related to Grey Malkin Lane.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have anything English language coming up.
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_01]: People can follow me up, though,
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying to bring back to the forefront of the work I did before in Spray Hill Comics.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_01]: So if I don't want to take young blood, uh, fifty, seventy, five to seven, the seven that was my run and get back to me.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to get people to start on it.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_04]: Excellent to see you both.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_04]: What a joy.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_04]: Stay tuned just after this.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_04]: If you've been listening Kevin Canary and I have been doing a delightful little mini episodes about time travel.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_04]: So stay tuned for a little focused episode on time.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_04]: You why me after this.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_04]: I will see you back here.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_04]: Next week on the Green
