- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:29So I want to tell you a funny story.
- 0:32Every morning I come out here to the chicken coop and I bring 3
- 0:35trays of breakfast out. I, I'm air quoting when I say
- 0:39breakfast, but I like to give them shredded vegetables and
- 0:42healthy things every morning before they go free range for
- 0:45the day. Because once they're their coop
- 0:48doors are open and then I open up their run because they've got
- 0:52a big, huge area that I can keep them fenced in in in case I need
- 0:55to, you know, never know if there are predators around or
- 0:58what not. And then I open that gate up and
- 1:00they're allowed to go on to the whole farm and spend their day,
- 1:03which they do. But every morning I come out and
- 1:06I always provide them with a morning breakfast and an
- 1:09afternoon snack. And an afternoon snack is pretty
- 1:11consistent. It's always freeze dried
- 1:13mealworms and sunflower seeds. And unless I have something big
- 1:17from the garden, like I'll take a watermelon, chop it up and
- 1:20give it to them. But that's when it's in season,
- 1:22and that's not in season right now.
- 1:24So every morning I have some form of breakfast for them.
- 1:29Usually it's shredded vegetables, a fruit like a
- 1:32blueberry, and hot Peppers put on top of it like crushed red
- 1:37Peppers, really keeps their digestive system clear.
- 1:40And I also it, it really takes care of parasites and whatnot.
- 1:43And they don't taste the heat so they can just chow down on it.
- 1:47And I pour coconut oil, melted coconut oil over the whole thing
- 1:50so that they're super healthy and that their feathers are nice
- 1:53and soft. And they, it actually helps a
- 1:55lot with molting. They don't molt as heavily as
- 1:58they did prior. So, you know, here we are.
- 2:02Do this every single morning. I, I have the same pattern.
- 2:04I try to get out here before the gate is their little auto door
- 2:08opens so that they're not out of the coop and I can get them on
- 2:11the ground. However, it's not always that
- 2:14way. And today was another one of
- 2:16those days. And it's funny.
- 2:17So I was, I changed what I was going to talk to you about today
- 2:19because it's so funny. So I will, they were all around
- 2:22me and they know the routine. They know the routine like the
- 2:26back of their little feet. And I put a tray down and
- 2:30everyone rushes to the first tray.
- 2:32Well, almost everyone. And then the second tray, you'll
- 2:35see a few, a few of them will move over there and they're
- 2:38peeping like crazy and they'll move over there.
- 2:40And then the third tray sits there and there are always just
- 2:444 chickens that wait. And it's funny because there are
- 2:46the chickens that are like the top, the toppity top of all the
- 2:50hens. Now, the Roosters are always not
- 2:53eating right away. They won't eat right away.
- 2:54They watch what's going on because their job is to protect
- 2:57the hens. So they won't put their heads
- 2:59down and eat right away. They, they as soon as the hens
- 3:02start this, they're like, right now as I'm recording this,
- 3:05they're walking around in circles, protecting, watching,
- 3:08making sure they don't eat as much as the hens.
- 3:11I'm sure most people didn't know that, but they don't.
- 3:13They always. And if they find food, they
- 3:15cluck and give it to a hen. Very chivalrous.
- 3:18And it's very cool to watch how they do it.
- 3:20But right now, they're protecting.
- 3:22But it's the four top hens and always Wanda and Amelia, who are
- 3:26like, Wanda is probably the most curious chicken I have ever seen
- 3:30in my life. Follows me everywhere I go.
- 3:32Comes in my office, gets in my truck, meets Mark at the
- 3:35driveway. I mean, she's a character and
- 3:371/2 and Amelia is Miss Bold. She'll just go wherever,
- 3:41whatever I'm doing, she wants to be there to see.
- 3:44But she's learned that if I rush that first pan those these four,
- 3:48and then there's there's two others that probably most of you
- 3:52have not heard me talk about. And they're they're very much,
- 3:55they're Americanas and they're very, very smart.
- 3:57So it's this little group. They're all over here on the
- 4:00side eating, getting like no rush, don't have to fight for
- 4:04the blueberries while everyone else is fighting stuck in this
- 4:09massive clump where they're all trying to get cuz remember I
- 4:13have, well I now I have 59. We lost one the other night.
- 4:15No idea. She just disappeared into thin
- 4:17air and don't know where she is. And here we are.
- 4:22We have 59 chickens. So they're all trying to get at
- 4:251 pan. Maybe the second one has like 4
- 4:28or five of them, but they're all around that first pan except for
- 4:31the ones that are really paying attention.
- 4:33And they've learned and they move over and they change their
- 4:36approach. And it's such an amazing lesson
- 4:39when you stop and think about how we all get stuck.
- 4:42Now. I do the same thing every day,
- 4:44my friends, like every single day.
- 4:45And you think that they would learn after all those days.
- 4:50I've been doing this with them for four years, 4 1/2 years now,
- 4:54and they, some of them, most of them are still my original ones.
- 4:59And I'm like, oh boy, isn't this funny that they just don't
- 5:03learn. They all have to rush to be
- 5:04first. Where if they just changed their
- 5:06approach and turned around like Wanda and Amelia and the other
- 5:09two do, all of a sudden you would see that they would, you
- 5:13know, have more food. They'd have more of the chance.
- 5:16Yet Nope, that's not it. And even when I take so Celine
- 5:20is my French crevicorn, she doesn't see particularly well
- 5:23just because of her puffy featherhead.
- 5:26So I will pick her up from that first pan and I will take her to
- 5:30that second pan and she runs right back to the first pan.
- 5:33And it astounds me all the time. But the real crux of this is how
- 5:37does this that relate to us? Well, where is that same thing
- 5:41showing up in your life? What are you not paying
- 5:42attention to that you need to so?
- 5:44And if you did, how it would change everything.
- 5:46Like that's I tell myself that all the time.
- 5:48What do I need to pay attention to in a different way that could
- 5:51change everything? And if it's just turning around
- 5:54and taking a different perspective, wow, what a
- 5:56difference that could make. I might have a whole plate of
- 5:58blueberries. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:00you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow, hopefully
- 6:02with a better voice. They seem to be getting it
- 6:04better. I'll talk to you soon.
- 6:06Bye.
