- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families Podcast.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's the podcast for.
- 0:07Speaker 3: The time poor parent who just wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Now today this stops justin Colson. We are so excited
- 0:13Speaker 2: for today's podcast. Normally on the podcast, all we do
- 0:15Speaker 2: is give you heaps and heaps of ideas for how
- 0:17Speaker 2: you can make your family happier. Today, we're going to
- 0:18Speaker 2: tell you about something that's going to absolutely make your
- 0:23Speaker 2: family happier if you are raising teens or tweens. One
- 0:27Speaker 2: of our premium offerings every six months or so is
- 0:31Speaker 2: a Happy Family's Summit. But we're going to run our
- 0:34Speaker 2: last summit next week, your last one just around the
- 0:38Speaker 2: corner like it's creeping up quickly, and we've put so
- 0:42Speaker 2: much work and effort into this one. I'm so excited
- 0:44Speaker 2: about it. So basically it's called the Smells Like Teen
- 0:48Speaker 2: Spirit Summit, and today in the podcast, we want to
- 0:50Speaker 2: tell you about the summit because it will undeniably change
- 0:54Speaker 2: what you do as a parent as you raise your
- 0:56Speaker 2: tweens and teens. The Smells Like Teen Spirits It happens
- 1:00Speaker 2: next Thursday. Today the Early Bird Special finishes, and so
- 1:06Speaker 2: we want to make sure you've got all the information
- 1:08Speaker 2: that you need so that you can make an informed
- 1:11Speaker 2: decision and join us for the summit. It's going to
- 1:13Speaker 2: be amazing. Now, one of the things that we've done
- 1:15Speaker 2: with the Smells Like Teen Spirit Summit is we're going
- 1:17Speaker 2: back to the nineties because we were usually most of
- 1:19Speaker 2: us were teenagers in the nineties, some of us the eighties,
- 1:22Speaker 2: some of us maybe even a bit later than that,
- 1:24Speaker 2: but nineties is kind of our formative years, and so
- 1:27Speaker 2: we've put together a Spotify playlist. You can actually look
- 1:30Speaker 2: this up. The Happy Family team has put together a
- 1:32Speaker 2: Spotify playlist called the Smells Like Teen Spirits Summit, And
- 1:36Speaker 2: essentially what we've done is we picked up a nineties
- 1:39Speaker 2: tune for every speaker that matches their topic.
- 1:43Speaker 3: That's like fun.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Now, before I want to do something in this podcast
- 1:47Speaker 2: that's going to put you on the spot. You don't
- 1:49Speaker 2: know that this is coming. But before I do this,
- 1:51Speaker 2: I just want to emphasize the quality of the speakers
- 1:54Speaker 2: we've gotten for this summit is world class. It's literally
- 1:58Speaker 2: the best summit we've ever put together in terms of lineup.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I don't think I've seen a better summit anywhere on
- 2:02Speaker 2: the planet, Like even your Ted Talks all that sort
- 2:05Speaker 2: of stuff. This is as good as it gets.
- 2:07Speaker 3: It's my question.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Incredibly good is yes?
- 2:10Speaker 3: Is your music line up just as good?
- 2:12Speaker 2: I think it's amazing. So here's what we're going to do.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you the person okay, and they're
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm going to play their song. Once I've played the song,
- 2:19Speaker 2: you've got to guess what they're talking about, and then
- 2:22Speaker 2: we'll talk about who they are and why they're so amazing.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Then we'll go to the next person.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I don't know if I can do this.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm so excited for this, but we need to do
- 2:29Speaker 2: it quickly because we've got so many speakers and it's
- 2:32Speaker 2: just so darn good. So we're going to start with me.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I'm going to be speaking at my summit. Oh hang on,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I need to get you to guess the name of
- 2:39Speaker 2: the summit. So this is the first song, which highlights
- 2:45Speaker 2: what the what it's about. What do you think this
- 2:48Speaker 2: one might be? Like, what's the name of the summer?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Based on this song?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Teenage?
- 2:57Speaker 2: You don't know who this is? Come on a Metallica. Okay,
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm so glad. I'm so glad that you don't know.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So this is Nirvana and it's and the song is
- 3:11Speaker 2: smells like teen Spirit because it's the smells like Teen
- 3:15Speaker 2: Spirit Summit. This is going to be a long podcast,
- 3:18Speaker 2: really bad, and I think that's really important that we do.
- 3:22Speaker 1: This.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Was listening to Mariah Carey and.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you just you totally totally did not get that
- 3:28Speaker 2: at all, did you. Okay, So that somebody is called
- 3:30Speaker 2: the smells like teen Spirit Summit, and we've thrown in
- 3:32Speaker 2: a little tagline more Nirvana, less drama, okay, because raising
- 3:36Speaker 2: teenage's lots of drama. Nirvana the idea of heaven peace,
- 3:41Speaker 2: more Nirvana. But Nirvana sang the song smells like teen spirits.
- 3:43Speaker 2: See what we've done there?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Loss so clever, so much.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Thinking, so much thinking. So, like I said, I'm just
- 3:50Speaker 2: going to save the speaker. We'll talk about who the
- 3:52Speaker 2: speaker is once you've heard the song and guess what
- 3:54Speaker 2: they're talking about. Are you ready?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Okay?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Okay, So the first speaker is me and here's my
- 4:00Speaker 2: song the radio. All right, then come on spin.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Are you talking about?
- 4:09Speaker 2: Say? Yes, I am, because it's important and I happen
- 4:14Speaker 2: to know a lot about it in terms of what
- 4:16Speaker 2: our teenagers are getting up to and what they need
- 4:19Speaker 2: to know. Okay, that's one for me, it's one for you,
- 4:22Speaker 2: and we don't need to talk about me, because if
- 4:23Speaker 2: you're listening to a Happy Family podcast, you know that
- 4:25Speaker 2: I've got a whole lot of stuff to say, done,
- 4:26Speaker 2: a whole lot of research, and it's going to be useful. Okay.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Our next speaker is a New York Times bestselling author
- 4:32Speaker 2: by the name of Amy Morin. Amy has written a
- 4:35Speaker 2: handful of New York Times bestsellers, and they're all starting
- 4:39Speaker 2: with the same title idea thirteen Things Strong People Do
- 4:45Speaker 2: or thirteen Things Strong Parents Do, or thirteen Things Strong
- 4:48Speaker 2: People Don't do. This one, Oh, well, I can't tell you.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I've almost given it away, but I'm not gonna I'm
- 4:53Speaker 2: not gonna give it all the way. Here's her song. Okay,
- 5:01Speaker 2: so you remember the song, montell Jordan, this is how
- 5:04Speaker 2: we do it. So what do you think she might
- 5:05Speaker 2: be talking about? Based on that song and based on
- 5:07Speaker 2: what I told you about the name of her books?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Thirteen Things Strong People Do.
- 5:11Speaker 2: No, well, you're so close. You got one word wrong.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Thirteen Things Strong Teens. Yes, because it's the smells like
- 5:18Speaker 2: teen Spirits Summit. It's about teenageres thirteen Things Strong Teens Do.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Amy is phenomenal. She's an incredible speaker and literally world class.
- 5:25Speaker 2: She's got a TED talk. It's one of the most
- 5:27Speaker 2: viewed TED talks of all time. She is just exemplary
- 5:32Speaker 2: and I think that people are going to love her.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:33Speaker 2: The next speaker is a guy called Josh Ship. Josh
- 5:36Speaker 2: Ship is literally known as one of the best youth
- 5:40Speaker 2: speakers in the United States. The guy is incredible. He
- 5:44Speaker 2: was a foster kid and he grew up going through
- 5:47Speaker 2: foster home after foster home after foster home until one family.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I'm going to get weepy saying it one family once
- 5:53Speaker 2: at a parents loved him so much that even though
- 5:56Speaker 2: he tried to leave a thousand times, he finally realized
- 6:00Speaker 2: what love is all about. So here's his song. Okay,
- 6:17Speaker 2: So there's you, Mariah Carey, right, this is in your wheelhouse.
- 6:21Speaker 2: What do you think Josh Shipp might be talking about
- 6:23Speaker 2: based on what I've told you?
- 6:25Speaker 4: So?
- 6:25Speaker 3: Is he going to be talking about belonging or togetherness?
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you're really close. The name of his talk is
- 6:32Speaker 2: One Caring Adult. I'm going to talk about how our
- 6:36Speaker 2: teenagers just they just need to have that one person
- 6:38Speaker 2: who is unconditional.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Oh I love that.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I'm getting I'm getting a good pup just thinking about it. Okay,
- 6:43Speaker 2: one of my favorite people on the planet just happens
- 6:46Speaker 2: to live in Brisbane and she is I think Brisbane,
- 6:50Speaker 2: I said, one of my favorites. Her name is Rebecca
- 6:52Speaker 2: s Barrow. I'm not going to say anything about her.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I think I'm giving you too many hints, so I'm
- 6:56Speaker 2: just going to play her song. You've got to tell me.
- 6:57Speaker 3: After my first attempt, I think that you need the hints.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Well, I think that this one will be really easy. Okay.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Beck Sparrow is going to be speaking. Here's her theme song.
- 7:17Speaker 2: She's going to talk about French. She says, friends navigating
- 7:22Speaker 2: teenage friendships. I decided not to bring it in on
- 7:25Speaker 2: the hook, but we need to hear it just to
- 7:27Speaker 2: make it really, really clearist again second year? Yea, how good?
- 7:36Speaker 2: How good is it going to be? I'll be there
- 7:38Speaker 2: for you is what Rebecca Sparrow is going to be
- 7:39Speaker 2: talking about. The importance of friendships. This is all for
- 7:42Speaker 2: the smells like teen Spirit Summit one week away, Early
- 7:45Speaker 2: Bird finishes today. Okay, we need to go faster. There's
- 7:47Speaker 2: a whole bunch of other speakers who are incredible. There's
- 7:49Speaker 2: this guy. He wrote Girls on the Edge, he wrote
- 7:51Speaker 2: Boys Adrifts. He has more qualifications coming out of every
- 7:55Speaker 2: orifice of his body than most people would even consider.
- 7:58Speaker 2: His name is Leonard Sax and his theme song is
- 8:03Speaker 2: this one from the nineties. How good is this playlist?
- 8:13Speaker 2: I just want to prop the playlist on Spotify and
- 8:15Speaker 2: make that the podcast today. It's a Pearl Jam better man. Right,
- 8:19Speaker 2: So what do you think that Leonard Sacks might be
- 8:21Speaker 2: talking about. I don't look at me like that. Isn't
- 8:26Speaker 2: that hard? Really?
- 8:27Speaker 3: Well, he's going to talk about boys?
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, what's going on with our boys? Why are
- 8:33Speaker 2: there so many challenges for our boys? Raising teen boys?
- 8:37Speaker 2: All the issues around pornography and the objectifying culture that
- 8:40Speaker 2: we're part of, why they're not doing as well at.
- 8:43Speaker 3: School, and how we can raise a better man, How
- 8:45Speaker 3: we can raise.
- 8:46Speaker 2: A better man? Yeah, it's going to be great, Okay.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Next one that we've got to talk about is doctor
- 8:50Speaker 2: Betina Hone and she has written a best selling book
- 8:53Speaker 2: called Understanding the Teenage Brain. I might have just told
- 8:57Speaker 2: you a little bit about what this is about, but
- 8:59Speaker 2: here's her themes from our Spotify playlist have Good with
- 9:06Speaker 2: the nineties. This is a really good playlist, isn't it great?
- 9:16Speaker 2: And you get you get the vibe right? So do
- 9:17Speaker 2: you need to guess what Betina Honan is going to
- 9:19Speaker 2: be speaking about? Doctor Petina Honan, I should say, come on, complicated? Yeah, teenagers?
- 9:28Speaker 3: How teenagers complicate this?
- 9:31Speaker 4: Well?
- 9:31Speaker 2: What's going on in their brain? What's going on in
- 9:33Speaker 2: their brain? What's so complicated? And I need to emphasize
- 9:36Speaker 2: as well. Doctor Petina Honan will also be speaking quite
- 9:39Speaker 2: a lot about neudiversity and adolescents. She's a world expert
- 9:42Speaker 2: in this and she's so good. Does this just make
- 9:47Speaker 2: you want to sit down and listen to every single
- 9:50Speaker 2: one of these conversations?
- 9:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Like I know that I actually.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Love how quirky you've got with this, and you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: kind of adding a song to each it's brilliant.
- 10:02Speaker 2: It sounds self interested by saying you got to do
- 10:03Speaker 2: this because it's going to be so good, but it
- 10:05Speaker 2: actually is so good and you got to do this.
- 10:07Speaker 2: The smells like Teen Spirit Summit is on Spotify. The
- 10:11Speaker 2: next person that we're speaking to is Julie Lithcot Haymes
- 10:16Speaker 2: Julie Lithcot Hayms. Now again, I want to tell you
- 10:19Speaker 2: all about her, but I might tell you about her
- 10:21Speaker 2: once you've heard the song, because otherwise it's going to
- 10:22Speaker 2: give away the topic. But here we go with the
- 10:25Speaker 2: nineties hit that is aligned with her topic.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, all.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Right, what are you thinking?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Optimism?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Hope? No, no, or maybe for us, maybe for us.
- 10:51Speaker 2: We're actually talking about how to raise an adult. She's
- 10:53Speaker 2: got this New York Times best selling book called How
- 10:54Speaker 2: to Raise an Adult. This is an accomplished woman, Julie Lilythcots.
- 11:00Speaker 2: She worked at Stanford as the admissions dean for some time.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Stamford University one of the Ivy League fanciest pants universities
- 11:08Speaker 2: on the planet, and she has her resume is the
- 11:13Speaker 2: kind of thing that you would make up if you're
- 11:14Speaker 2: trying to create the most impressive human on the planet.
- 11:17Speaker 2: She's just a phenomenon. But she is an incredible speaker
- 11:21Speaker 2: New York Time's best selling author, but an incredible speaker
- 11:24Speaker 2: who really is all about how do we help our
- 11:26Speaker 2: kids to grow up to be amazing human adults? So
- 11:29Speaker 2: this is Hope, Well, yeah, I guess I guess it is.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I guess it is.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Listen to her and your kids will move out of home.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'm eventually. One of your favorite people is Karen Young.
- 11:41Speaker 2: She runs the website Hey Sigmund Love Karen, and in fact,
- 11:45Speaker 2: we just recently caught up with her for dinner last
- 11:47Speaker 2: week because she and her husband Dan are good friends
- 11:49Speaker 2: of ours and we just we love them to bits.
- 11:51Speaker 2: But her topic is going to be aligned with this
- 11:56Speaker 2: song from Tony Bratton again, I got carried away. I
- 12:26Speaker 2: pushed the wrong button. I started to sing falsetto. I
- 12:28Speaker 2: shouldn't have done that. I need to just stick with
- 12:31Speaker 2: what I do right. I should never ever try that again.
- 12:35Speaker 2: That was Breathe Again by Tony Braxton. What do you
- 12:37Speaker 2: think that our good friend Karen Young might be talking.
- 12:39Speaker 3: About, Well, because I know Karen.
- 12:41Speaker 4: It it has to be around anxiety and just that idea.
- 12:47Speaker 4: You know that we've got so much going around in
- 12:49Speaker 4: our brains, these teenagers trying to work out all their emotions.
- 12:52Speaker 2: She's world classed helping your team with anxiety. It's going
- 12:54Speaker 2: to be so good, all right, This one's going to
- 12:56Speaker 2: be a really tricky one. Professor Gene Twaingey is going
- 13:00Speaker 2: to be speaking about a topic and her song is
- 13:05Speaker 2: black Hole Sun from Soundgarden.
- 13:16Speaker 1: So what do you reckon?
- 13:18Speaker 2: Just did you even know the song? You don't know
- 13:20Speaker 2: the song? No, okay, I don't think I've ever heard it,
- 13:23Speaker 2: and I'm not actually playing words.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Drummupp all right.
- 13:31Speaker 2: So that's the song. That's the black Hole Sun by Soundgarden.
- 13:34Speaker 2: What do you think that she could be doing risk taking? No,
- 13:40Speaker 2: although there is an element of that in her talk.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Professor gen Twainy is one of the most vocal people
- 13:45Speaker 2: on the planet about what's happening with our teens in
- 13:46Speaker 2: social media and the impact that social media is having.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I guess the black Hole exactly. Yeah, we were being
- 13:53Speaker 2: a little bit obtuse, there you were.
- 13:56Speaker 3: But I can see I can see.
- 13:57Speaker 2: It now, Okay. The most incredible speak that we have
- 14:00Speaker 2: for the entire lineup is a guy called Professor Lawrence Steinberg.
- 14:04Speaker 2: He's literally written the textbook on adolescents. In fact, I
- 14:07Speaker 2: have it on my shelf. This guy has written more textbooks,
- 14:10Speaker 2: more university papers, more connected, aren't you. I've got some
- 14:14Speaker 2: good people involved. And here is the song that goes
- 14:17Speaker 2: along with his talk.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Friends and your own mind, Hanging Honor Shell.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Then good out, then good time. I love this song
- 14:26Speaker 1: that dos and memories and skin.
- 14:29Speaker 2: On trial, who is well of the wild? It's something
- 14:37Speaker 2: un predectable in the end. That's see, that's more in
- 14:41Speaker 2: my range.
- 14:41Speaker 1: If you are the time of your life?
- 14:45Speaker 2: All right, what do you reckon? I just that was
- 14:47Speaker 2: a hard stop. I was supposed to fade it out.
- 14:48Speaker 2: That's a hard stop.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Is he going to talk about all things teenagers?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going to talk specifically about how to make
- 14:54Speaker 2: the most of this age of option?
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I love that he's.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Written a book called Age of Opportunity. It's my off
- 15:00Speaker 2: just there. And Professor Steinberg, he just loves teenagers. He's
- 15:04Speaker 2: now in his I think late seventies, early eighties, but
- 15:07Speaker 2: he speaks with so much vigor and such incredible He's
- 15:11Speaker 2: such an impressive man, so impressive, and he's going to
- 15:14Speaker 2: help us to make the most of this stage of
- 15:15Speaker 2: opportunity while our teenagers are young. I'm getting weepy about
- 15:18Speaker 2: that because I know how good the conversation is going
- 15:19Speaker 2: to be.
- 15:20Speaker 3: We need more people who love our teenagers.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we do. Oh, there's one more session at the
- 15:24Speaker 2: end of the day. As if that wasn't enough, there's
- 15:26Speaker 2: one more session. It's me again right at the very
- 15:29Speaker 2: end of the day. Here's the song for this one.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Damn.
- 15:44Speaker 2: So the song is What's up by the fawn on Blonde?
- 15:46Speaker 2: What do you reckon? I'm going to be speaking about
- 15:47Speaker 2: at the end of the day. I love the blank.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Look, I don't know what's up with our teenagers?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's actually a Q and A session. You say, hey,
- 16:00Speaker 2: what's up? Like, what do you want to talk about?
- 16:01Speaker 2: You've listened to all these incredible speakers all day. Let's
- 16:04Speaker 2: break it down.
- 16:05Speaker 3: That was a bit tricky.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well, now here's the stuff that you need to know.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Not only do we have these incredible speakers and.
- 16:11Speaker 3: An amazing playlist and.
- 16:13Speaker 2: An amazing playlist which you can download now. You don't
- 16:15Speaker 2: even have to sign up for the summit together.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna say, just get you download now this. This
- 16:20Speaker 3: is fantastic. Like I've been grinning from here to just
- 16:22Speaker 3: listen to the music.
- 16:23Speaker 2: The early Bird finishes today. The summit is incredible. But
- 16:28Speaker 2: there's one really big thing that I want to emphasize.
- 16:30Speaker 2: You don't have to watch the whole thing in one day.
- 16:32Speaker 2: So once upon a time, that's what we used to
- 16:34Speaker 2: do right, That's how Summit's worked. But now you get
- 16:36Speaker 2: the video, you get it for this extraordinarily long time
- 16:39Speaker 2: where you can watch it whenever it works for you. Okay,
- 16:42Speaker 2: but we're also giving you access to podcast versions.
- 16:48Speaker 3: So a lot of people brilliant.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yes, So a lot of people say, oh, I don't
- 16:50Speaker 2: have time to sit there and watch this stuff, and
- 16:53Speaker 2: we're aware of that. So you can get the video,
- 16:56Speaker 2: or you can just get the audio, and that way
- 16:58Speaker 2: you can listen to it when you're walking the dog,
- 17:00Speaker 2: or you've dropped the kids off from school and you've
- 17:02Speaker 2: already listened to our podcast, and then you're going to
- 17:04Speaker 2: listen to the Summit.
- 17:05Speaker 3: You've got me hooked.
- 17:06Speaker 2: It's all there, and it's so damn cheap, like you
- 17:09Speaker 2: would pay. You'd pay over two hundred dollars one hundred
- 17:12Speaker 2: and fifty dollars just to hear one of these people speak.
