Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: All right, Jacob Marcy kind enough to join us now
- 0:04Speaker 1: of the Miami Marlins. We always appreciate getting players here
- 0:07Speaker 1: on foul Territory. Jacob, thanks for taking the time. We
- 0:09Speaker 1: appreciate it very much. How are things going.
- 0:13Speaker 2: They're good. Thank you guys for having me.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Of course. Of course, so you guys beat Colorado last night.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You hit an RBI double and the third to extend
- 0:20Speaker 1: the lead to three. Nothing. I mean, this is something
- 0:22Speaker 1: that I can appreciate both about you guys obviously and
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Rockies. Neither team things going the way that you
- 0:29Speaker 1: guys wanted to obviously, but the players themselves are still
- 0:34Speaker 1: incredibly competitive and you're out there trying to win. What
- 0:36Speaker 1: do you take to the field every single day in
- 0:39Speaker 1: terms of that mindset?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's a long year, and obviously we
- 0:46Speaker 3: had a stretch where it wasn't going as we wanted to.
- 0:49Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, we're still trying to
- 0:50Speaker 3: win games and do everything we can to win. And
- 0:53Speaker 3: I mean you saw last night we were up big
- 0:56Speaker 3: and then they came back and battled back and just
- 0:59Speaker 3: competitive game and we just want to win every game.
- 1:01Speaker 3: So whether that's leading us to anything, this year or
- 1:04Speaker 3: just going into next year.
- 1:07Speaker 4: All right, So how much has that talked about? What
- 1:10Speaker 4: is that conversation? Like, I was fortunate every time I
- 1:13Speaker 4: was on a bad Big League team or a team
- 1:15Speaker 4: that wasn't in the playoffs, they fired me, they sent
- 1:18Speaker 4: me home, so I got to play more on just
- 1:20Speaker 4: I got to beat on the teams that were making
- 1:23Speaker 4: pushes for the playoffs. What is that conversation like day
- 1:27Speaker 4: in and day out for you guys. That's a very
- 1:29Speaker 4: young crew, a very in my opinion, you guys are
- 1:33Speaker 4: beating expectations, but you guys are doing it in a
- 1:37Speaker 4: different way than I thought you would do it because
- 1:38Speaker 4: your pitching is really good. You guys are also hitting.
- 1:41Speaker 4: So what is that conversation like day in and day
- 1:43Speaker 4: out for you guys?
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean at times it's a little bit tough,
- 1:49Speaker 3: just because of the fact that we want to win
- 1:51Speaker 3: and like, yeah, we're young, but we try not to
- 1:54Speaker 3: use that as an excuse. But at the same time
- 1:55Speaker 3: we do have some growing pains with that. But I
- 1:58Speaker 3: think it's just leaning on each other every day, working
- 2:01Speaker 3: hard to get better and then just taking care of
- 2:03Speaker 3: business when it goes to the field and trying to
- 2:05Speaker 3: win every game and do everything we can to compete
- 2:08Speaker 3: and the rest will take care of itself.
- 2:11Speaker 4: You say growing pains? Can Can you explain growing paints?
- 2:15Speaker 4: Like when you're young, you don't know that you're young.
- 2:17Speaker 4: When you're in inexperience, you don't know that you're in experience,
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like I don't. I maybe you can tell me differently,
- 2:24Speaker 4: But has there been a situation and the big LEAs
- 2:26Speaker 4: where you're like, shoot, I didn't know that those guys
- 2:30Speaker 4: were going to be doing that. Like you've played a
- 2:31Speaker 4: lot of baseball and you've had a lot of success,
- 2:33Speaker 4: as everybody that's gotten called up, has is there a
- 2:36Speaker 4: moment where you're like, oh, yeah, you know, we're a
- 2:38Speaker 4: little inexperienced in that sense that you've seen.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I mean, I think sometimes it's just like for me personally,
- 2:46Speaker 3: I'm super aggressive on the base pass and we have
- 2:48Speaker 3: some other guys that are too. So just learning situations
- 2:52Speaker 3: that you shouldn't go in and that you should go in,
- 2:55Speaker 3: and just little things like that that you can learn
- 2:58Speaker 3: and grow from each and every day that if you
- 3:01Speaker 3: want to win every every single game that you have
- 3:03Speaker 3: to take care of.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Jacob talking about being young, why are you wearing number
- 3:08Speaker 5: eighty seven? Can we not get you a better number?
- 3:10Speaker 5: I mean, I'm sure, I'm assuming you're Alliance fan, so
- 3:13Speaker 5: maybe you're a Sam Laporta fan, but why are you
- 3:15Speaker 5: wearing eighty seven? Like, can we not get you a
- 3:17Speaker 5: number that's not a wide receiver or tight end?
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah? I'm actually not a Lions fan. I'm a Bears fan, which.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Oh, all right, well I like you so much better now,
- 3:27Speaker 5: thank you. Even though the Bears are terrible, they just
- 3:30Speaker 5: lost twenty one against the Lions, so I apologize.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they're brutal, but no, honestly, it was I think
- 3:36Speaker 3: it was my spring training number.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I was hurt the whole time in spring, so I
- 3:40Speaker 2: don't really know.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But it was my locker whom I got here, and
- 3:44Speaker 3: as long as they gave me one, I didn't really care.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Fair But how good do you have to be until
- 3:50Speaker 5: you ask for one?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Like?
- 3:52Speaker 5: What point do you do you go to next spring
- 3:54Speaker 5: and say, look, man, I don't know who the clubhouse
- 3:55Speaker 5: guy is in Miami, but are you do you go
- 3:57Speaker 5: in after the season ends and after the season you're
- 4:00Speaker 5: having and you're like, hey, yo, bro, like eighty seven
- 4:03Speaker 5: is not working? Can I at least get like an
- 4:05Speaker 5: eight or a seven, but separate them.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I've gotten asked that a lot.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I mean, maybe it'll be a conversation this offseason that
- 4:15Speaker 3: has had, but as of right now, I mean that's
- 4:18Speaker 3: been a big question, a lot of interviews I've had
- 4:20Speaker 3: and just people around the clubhouse.
- 4:24Speaker 2: All right, Jacob.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Two part question, one silly one and one a serious one.
- 4:28Speaker 1: You're in Miami, so a ride of passages in Miami
- 4:31Speaker 1: is drinking Cafe Kuana, and I know that when they
- 4:34Speaker 1: have the cafecito, the little espresso cups for all the
- 4:39Speaker 1: visiting clubhouses. Have you started drinking Cuban coffee yet in
- 4:42Speaker 1: Miami because that's huge? And have what's your favorite Cuban food?
- 4:48Speaker 3: Oh jeez? Two questions. Yeah, honestly, I haven't drank Cuban
- 4:53Speaker 3: coffee yet, and.
- 4:56Speaker 2: No, I have not. I didn't even know what that
- 4:58Speaker 2: was until you just said that. And then.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Cuban food. I don't really know what my favorite is. Yeah,
- 5:07Speaker 3: I still haven't really gotten out to enough restaurants or
- 5:10Speaker 3: anything around to really dive in. I mean, I've had
- 5:13Speaker 3: a lot of family and stuff in town. When I've
- 5:15Speaker 3: been at home so haven't been out too much. That's
- 5:20Speaker 3: definitely something I need to go do.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I tell you what your club house, your clubby.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Better get you on some Cuban coffee because you need
- 5:27Speaker 1: to know what I'm Cuban. I'm born and raised in Colorado,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but spent every summer in Miami. We got to get
- 5:32Speaker 1: you on the Cuban coffee, all right. You work a
- 5:35Speaker 1: ton of walks, Jacob on three two counts more walks
- 5:38Speaker 1: than he has in terms of you know that you
- 5:41Speaker 1: have an AB's in a full count. So let's talk
- 5:43Speaker 1: about that for a hot second. That gives you a
- 5:45Speaker 1: nine to forty six ops some full counts higher than
- 5:47Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber, higher than cal Rawley, two guys that are
- 5:51Speaker 1: having unbelievable years.
- 5:53Speaker 2: What is it about you?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Patients at the plate, working your counts, not swinging at
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know, pitches that are outside of the zone, are
- 6:00Speaker 1: not swinging at pitches that you don't feel comfortable with.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Tell us about it. I mean, at a young age,
- 6:04Speaker 1: that type of patience at the plate is pretty key.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Tell us more about that.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think it's something I've I've leaned
- 6:11Speaker 3: on definitely coming up through the miners and stuff. And
- 6:15Speaker 3: then as I've gotten here. But I mean, people think
- 6:18Speaker 3: I'm passive in trying to work walks, but it's like
- 6:20Speaker 3: I'm really not.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I'm just trying to get a good pitch to hit.
- 6:22Speaker 3: And then I think with two strikes, I think I
- 6:25Speaker 3: sometimes get a little bit more disciplined, which helps to
- 6:28Speaker 3: just especially in counts like that where I know they're
- 6:31Speaker 3: trying to get me to chase and stuff, and I'm
- 6:33Speaker 3: really not trying to walk them up there, trying to
- 6:35Speaker 3: get a good pitch to hit, and they got to
- 6:38Speaker 3: make three of those before three pitches on the corner before.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Four balls.
- 6:44Speaker 3: So at the end of the day, I just I'm
- 6:46Speaker 3: just trying to get good pitches to hit and whatever
- 6:48Speaker 3: comes comes.
- 6:50Speaker 4: That's an elite approach. I wish. I wish I could
- 6:52Speaker 4: have done that, but I never could. So stick with it.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Screw what everybody else says. And secondly, Cuban caf is
- 7:00Speaker 4: just a bunch of sugar thick and it is like
- 7:04Speaker 4: it will keep you awake for like nine years if
- 7:08Speaker 4: you watch him make it.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Cuban back on. Put the Cuban back on with him.
- 7:11Speaker 4: First of all, it sugar in it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: If you make it with a lot of sugar, but
- 7:17Speaker 1: it is it is. I will say it is absolute gasoline.
- 7:20Speaker 1: It will keep you up. It's a little bit of coffee,
- 7:23Speaker 1: but it has it packs a punch. It packs a punch. Jacob,
- 7:27Speaker 1: don't let the white guy tell you. Listen to the
- 7:29Speaker 1: Cuban Okay.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I don't really know if I want to drink that
- 7:32Speaker 2: before the game, if I'm going to be up all night.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Then I played in Miami. I played more games in
- 7:37Speaker 4: Miami than Alana did. So the Cuban coffee that they made,
- 7:42Speaker 4: and there I just watched them stir all the sugar
- 7:45Speaker 4: into the bottom of this like pot. Anyway, anyway, you
- 7:49Speaker 4: don't need coffee. You're too young. You don't need to.
- 7:51Speaker 4: You don't need to be drinking too much of that
- 7:53Speaker 4: anyway right now. But since you've been in the big leagues,
- 7:57Speaker 4: who's the most impressive player that you've seen when you
- 8:00Speaker 4: look across the field. Maybe it's on your team, maybe
- 8:03Speaker 4: it's maybe it's Exavier Edwards, my old teammate from Team USA.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Don't say Exavier because he's not that impressive. He's tiny
- 8:11Speaker 4: and he just runs a lot. But who is the
- 8:13Speaker 4: most impressive player that you've seen that, You're like, well, bro,
- 8:17Speaker 4: I'm in the big leagues and I just saw Aaron
- 8:19Speaker 4: Judge and my debut.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I mean there's a lot of them.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I think, Uh, two of the ones that stick out
- 8:29Speaker 3: big time are one Kyle Schorber. Just what he's doing
- 8:34Speaker 3: this year and just being able to see that live
- 8:37Speaker 3: was pretty cool. Just didn't really give into pitches and
- 8:41Speaker 3: then when he hits him, it's all one hundred and
- 8:43Speaker 3: fifteen every single time, So.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Seeing it here and that was it was cool.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And then Jose Ramirez, I think just his ability at
- 8:52Speaker 3: the play literally do everything. He was super impressive to watch.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Aaron Judge wasn't there when I did, so I wasn't
- 9:00Speaker 3: able to see that, so that that kind of sucked
- 9:04Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But yeah, those two guys, for sure.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You hit better again. Your numbers right now are better
- 9:10Speaker 4: against lefties. We talk about it all the time platoons
- 9:14Speaker 4: in the league, there's platoon advantage. You have a reversed
- 9:17Speaker 4: platoon split right now. Is that something that you facing
- 9:22Speaker 4: lefties helps you against righties or do you feel like
- 9:26Speaker 4: that is completely separate.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I think sometimes I've told people that when I face
- 9:33Speaker 3: a lefty, and I haven't been feeling as good that
- 9:35Speaker 3: sometimes a lefty makes makes my mechanics have to be
- 9:39Speaker 3: kind of correct so that I can get to pitches,
- 9:42Speaker 3: So I definitely think it helps. And yeah, I think
- 9:48Speaker 3: sometimes when I'm going bad and I face a lefty,
- 9:51Speaker 3: it sometimes gets me back on track.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Jacob, at what point in your career did you realize
- 9:58Speaker 1: that you had made it? And I'm not talking about
- 10:00Speaker 1: obviously when you made your debut or whatever, but at
- 10:02Speaker 1: what point coming up did you realize that you had
- 10:05Speaker 1: stuff that was good enough to a get to the
- 10:08Speaker 1: big league level but also to stay there.
- 10:13Speaker 3: I think it was probably my first full year going
- 10:17Speaker 3: from I just high in Double A.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I had a pretty good year.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Overall, and then I went to the Fall League after that,
- 10:24Speaker 3: and just all of the top prospects in the game
- 10:28Speaker 3: were there at the time, So just being able to
- 10:31Speaker 3: have a good year against everyone in that year and
- 10:35Speaker 3: then at the same time being able to have a
- 10:38Speaker 3: good performance in the Fall League and play pretty well
- 10:41Speaker 3: against some guys that have been pitching in the big
- 10:44Speaker 3: leagues there too, which definitely gave me a lot of
- 10:47Speaker 3: confidence moving forward.
- 10:49Speaker 4: All right, As a rookie, obviously you got to sing
- 10:52Speaker 4: on the bus. I always ask guys what song did
- 10:54Speaker 4: they sing? Or have you or will you sing on
- 10:57Speaker 4: the bus? And who's in charge of the mic of
- 11:00Speaker 4: the Marlins when you guys go on road trips, who's
- 11:02Speaker 4: in charge of the mic?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Lately it's been Kyle Stowers.
- 11:07Speaker 3: It was Calquantra, and then after the Braves picked him up,
- 11:12Speaker 3: then we had Kyle takeover and he's been doing pretty
- 11:16Speaker 3: good job lately.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And I sang Ain't no Mountain high enough.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I was trying to think of a song that could
- 11:22Speaker 3: just get the guys into it and uh, hopefully not
- 11:26Speaker 3: be as bad just because I'm not a great singer.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But yeah, Jacob, you guys are you guys are in
- 11:35Speaker 1: I just talked over AJ Sorry about that. You guys
- 11:37Speaker 1: are in Denver right now, right You're at the hotel
- 11:39Speaker 1: in Denver. Are you a breakfast guy?
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 11:43Speaker 1: All right, go to snooze. If you're not going to
- 11:46Speaker 1: drink Cuban coffee in Miami, I need you. I implore you
- 11:49Speaker 1: to go to snooze at Union Station and get the
- 11:52Speaker 1: corn beef fash. Okay, if you do nothing else while
- 11:55Speaker 1: you're in Denver other than beat the Rockies. I implore
- 11:57Speaker 1: you to go to snooze AJ.
- 11:59Speaker 5: You can now go hey when you're when you grew up.
- 12:03Speaker 5: So we have something in common. So you're from Dearborn.
- 12:06Speaker 5: I spent a lot of time in Dearborn inclosing nine
- 12:07Speaker 5: to eleven, which just passed, and you were born I
- 12:09Speaker 5: saw in two thousand and one, so we were kind
- 12:12Speaker 5: of close to each other. I'm assuming, but I want
- 12:14Speaker 5: to know this, how many how many hours did you
- 12:16Speaker 5: spend in that Dearborn mall that was there at Dearborn, Michigan,
- 12:21Speaker 5: Because I spent a lot of hours. We used to
- 12:23Speaker 5: stay right there. There used to be a ritz across
- 12:25Speaker 5: the street. We went to the Beni Hanna and there
- 12:27Speaker 5: was a Fridays because back then that was all we
- 12:29Speaker 5: had was the Fridays and the Beni Hanna. But then
- 12:31Speaker 5: they also had one shop, and I want to know
- 12:33Speaker 5: if you ever went they had a suit shop. You're
- 12:35Speaker 5: probably too young, but maybe your parents went there. It
- 12:37Speaker 5: was like three suits for thirty nine dollars or something,
- 12:40Speaker 5: and they were some of the coolest suits that I
- 12:42Speaker 5: could never put off in my life. So have you
- 12:45Speaker 5: been to the mall at Dearborn and have you seen
- 12:47Speaker 5: this store I'm talking about.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I have not seen that store, but I might have
- 12:51Speaker 3: to go check it out now if it's still there.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I've definitely been to that mall. I know that that
- 12:56Speaker 2: exact area you're talking about.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Yeah, so we were in the Hyatt was the high
- 13:00Speaker 5: across the head, the circle thing at the top, for
- 13:02Speaker 5: nine to eleven. We spent like ten days or twelve
- 13:05Speaker 5: days there because we couldn't go anywhere, so we were
- 13:07Speaker 5: just stuck there and we the mall finally opened, so
- 13:09Speaker 5: we at least we could go to the mall every night.
- 13:11Speaker 5: But yeah, and then we used to go to the
- 13:13Speaker 5: Henry Ford Museum across the street, and there was a
- 13:15Speaker 5: big gym we'd go to right there. So I spent
- 13:18Speaker 5: a lot of time in your hometown. And then when
- 13:20Speaker 5: we were driving into the stadium, they had the big tire,
- 13:22Speaker 5: the giant tire.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I don't know what the hell they had, Yeah, the
- 13:24Speaker 2: big tart fire. Yeah.
- 13:26Speaker 5: See, so you know, I mean, listen, I know about
- 13:28Speaker 5: Detroit now, but I'm proud of you for being a
- 13:30Speaker 5: Bears fan.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Yeah, my dad was a Walter Payton fan, so I'm
- 13:35Speaker 3: glad I'm a Bears fan too.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Except right now the lines are.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Kind of being them every single time, so that doesn't help.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Did you play football, because the size of your neck
- 13:47Speaker 1: looks like you could actually be a freaking tight end
- 13:50Speaker 1: like eighty seven suits you. Did you play football coming up?
- 13:53Speaker 1: Or were you always? Were you always a baseball kid?
- 13:57Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if I could be a
- 13:58Speaker 3: tight end, but I don't know if I'm big enough
- 14:01Speaker 3: for that. But yeah, I definitely I put football in
- 14:03Speaker 3: high school and growing up.
- 14:05Speaker 4: What do you do on the off days? What does
- 14:07Speaker 4: an off day look like for you?
- 14:13Speaker 2: I mean, I guess it depends where we're at.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Like we were just had off day here and I
- 14:16Speaker 3: actually I had a friend that's out here, so went
- 14:19Speaker 3: out and just kind of explored a little bit. We
- 14:21Speaker 3: went to the Red Rocks and then went up in
- 14:23Speaker 3: the mountains a little bit and got some food. So definitely,
- 14:26Speaker 3: just if I'm in a new city, I try to
- 14:28Speaker 3: go explore and do stuff. And then if I'm back
- 14:30Speaker 3: in Miami and stuff, just kind of try to take
- 14:33Speaker 3: care of things like laundry and just stuff like that
- 14:36Speaker 3: so I can be ready going forward. But I definitely
- 14:39Speaker 3: try to go explore as much as I can. Especially
- 14:41Speaker 3: on off days, just so you have a little more time.
- 14:44Speaker 4: When when you say explore, like, are you talking like
- 14:46Speaker 4: you want to go on hikes, because ain't nobody hiking
- 14:48Speaker 4: in Miami. They're sweating. They're sweating down there. Do you like,
- 14:52Speaker 4: I mean, is there is there a video game? They like,
- 14:55Speaker 4: a store that you always go to in every city,
- 14:57Speaker 4: some type of food because you said you don't you
- 15:00Speaker 4: haven't eating Cuban food, So do you like, what's your
- 15:02Speaker 4: favorite food?
- 15:05Speaker 3: I'm a big, big breakfast guy, so I definitely like
- 15:08Speaker 3: to go to breakfast spots and then at the same time,
- 15:11Speaker 3: I always get a good dinner, usually steak somewhere. So
- 15:16Speaker 3: definitely a foodie when it comes to going to places.
- 15:19Speaker 3: But at the same time, like we've had time off
- 15:22Speaker 3: in New York and then here too, so just like
- 15:27Speaker 3: there's a bunch of stuff to do in New York.
- 15:28Speaker 4: So just.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Doing stuff like that, just uh, stuff that's only in
- 15:33Speaker 3: New York or or here. Just being around the mountains
- 15:35Speaker 3: just I didn't really hike, but just going and seeing
- 15:38Speaker 3: that stuff, I think, I think super cool.
