- 0:01Take your Bible, if you would, and turn with me to 1st
- 0:03Thessalonians chapter 5 to make our way toward the end of this
- 0:08wonderful epistle. We have been challenged, we've
- 0:12been encouraged, we've been convicted as we look at what the
- 0:16word of the Lord has to say and in order for us to be the model
- 0:21church that God wants us to be and be the model leaders that
- 0:25God wants us to be. And the be the model followers
- 0:28and model friends. We must live the model life.
- 0:32And that's what chapter 4 and chapter 5 are all about.
- 0:36So we told you that there were 6 words that make up the model
- 0:39life. The first word is abstinence.
- 0:42That's in verses 1 to 8 of chapter 4.
- 0:45And that is that the model life abstains from sexual immorality.
- 0:51That's number one. Number two, in verses 9 to 12 of
- 0:58chapter 4, the next word is aspiration, and that is the
- 1:03model life aspires to a life of charity and sensitivity.
- 1:09And then the next word following that is anticipation, verses 13
- 1:13to 18 of First Thessalonians 4, which the model life anticipates
- 1:19the return of deity. And then in chapter 5, verses 1
- 1:23to 11, the next word is alertness.
- 1:25For the model life is alert to the world's destiny and then
- 1:31their responsibility in light of that.
- 1:35And then you come to the next set of verses and verses 12 and
- 1:39following, and the model life is 1 of adaptability.
- 1:44The model life adapts within God's wonderful family to the
- 1:48membership, to the leadership. So there's sweet fellowship
- 1:53within the body of Christ. Today we come to the last word
- 2:00that describes the model life, and that is adoration.
- 2:06For the model life adores their God continually, unashamedly,
- 2:16unreservedly. The model life adores the Lord,
- 2:24adoration, reverence, respect, honor, and glory.
- 2:31That's what the model life is all about.
- 2:35It's about the true worship of the King.
- 2:40And it's very easily stated, not so easily applied for.
- 2:48Most of us would say that we adore the king, we live in
- 2:52adoration of the Messiah. Most of us would say, yeah,
- 2:57that's that's that's me. And yet when when Paul describes
- 3:03it, he describes it this way, one verse 2 words rejoice
- 3:09always. Then he gives the next verse
- 3:13verse 17, pray without ceasing, and then the next verse verse 18
- 3:23and everything give thanks. For this is the will of God in
- 3:29Christ Jesus concerning you. In other words, the will of God
- 3:36is summed up by saying you rejoice always, you pray without
- 3:42ceasing, and you give thanks in everything.
- 3:48That is the will of God for your life.
- 3:54It's a life of adoration of the Messiah.
- 3:58We like to say we, we rejoice, we like to say we pray, we like
- 4:02to say that we give thanks to God.
- 4:04The problem is, it's the rejoicing always that's the
- 4:08problem. It's a praying without ceasing
- 4:13which is the problem, and it's the giving of thanks in every
- 4:19situation which is the problem. But Paul states it very clearly.
- 4:25This is what you do. This is how you adore the King.
- 4:30You rejoice always, You pray without ceasing and you give
- 4:35thanks in everything because this is God's will for your
- 4:41life, a life of adoration of the king.
- 4:48That's a requirement for you to understand this when it comes to
- 4:51being a child of the king. Most of you know the story of
- 4:56the rich young ruler who came to Jesus.
- 5:00He, he was the ultimate seeker in Israel.
- 5:06He comes to Jesus and he says a ruler questioned him saying,
- 5:11good teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
- 5:17This is the perfect opportunity for Jesus to say, wow, this is
- 5:23what you do. Repeat after me.
- 5:26Pray this prayer. That's not what Jesus said.
- 5:33That's not what Jesus said. The fact you'll find nowhere in
- 5:36the Bible that becoming a Christian says you got to say a
- 5:39prayer, but that's another topic for another day.
- 5:44But Jesus has his ultimate seeker come to him and say, what
- 5:48must I do, good teacher, to inherit eternal life.
- 5:50And the disciples are like, wow, he's coming right to us.
- 5:53We don't have to go to him. He is seeking salvation.
- 5:57And instead of making it easy for the guy to believe in Jesus,
- 6:03Jesus makes it absolutely impossible for him to believe.
- 6:08And that's the way you ought to be with people who want to know
- 6:10Christ. Make it impossible for them to
- 6:12believe. Make it so hard for them.
- 6:17Do not ever make it easy, because Jesus never made it
- 6:21easy. In fact, he made it so difficult
- 6:24that people turned away in droves from him.
- 6:30If he was to have a crusade at a stadium in Southern California
- 6:35and he preached, everybody would run away.
- 6:41They wouldn't come down by the thousands.
- 6:43They'd run away because he says to the man, this why do you call
- 6:49me good? Only God is good.
- 6:53So you must recognize that I'm God because you called me good
- 6:59and you know that only God is good.
- 7:00So you are assuming or believing that I am good.
- 7:06So he says this, you know, the commandments do not commit
- 7:09adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false
- 7:12witness, honor your father and mother.
- 7:15You want eternal life. Now he knows that eternal life
- 7:19is all about God's life. Eternal life is not about
- 7:23quantity. Eternal life is about quality,
- 7:27God's eternal right. So therefore, eternal life is
- 7:31God's life. He's asking, how do I obtain
- 7:35God's life, the quality of life. Here's a man who has everything.
- 7:42He's the rich young ruler. He's got it all.
- 7:47So he comes to Jesus because he he knows that there's something
- 7:51missing in his life. He can't define it.
- 7:55He doesn't know what it is, but it must be eternal life, the
- 7:59quality of life that he's missing, even though he's rich.
- 8:05And so he says to Jesus, All these things I have kept from my
- 8:10youth. I never slept with anybody else.
- 8:15Are you kidding me? Steal.
- 8:18I don't have to steal. I'm rich.
- 8:21Murdered. Nah, Honor my father and mother.
- 8:25I bought him a condo in the Sea of Galilee.
- 8:29They can live there forever. They're fine.
- 8:32I've honored my mother and father.
- 8:37So Jesus says one thing you lack just one.
- 8:48There's only one thing you're missing one thing.
- 8:53So he tells them, he says, sell all that you possess distributed
- 9:00to the poor, and you should have treasure in heaven.
- 9:04Come and follow me. You lack one thing.
- 9:13See. He takes them to the latter half
- 9:14of the 10 commandments, the the, the, the, the half that deals
- 9:18with your relationship to people 1st and then he takes him to the
- 9:23first part of the 10 commandments that deal with his
- 9:27relationship with God. You should have know the gods
- 9:31before me should I fall down and worship any other God.
- 9:36But you see, he had another God. His riches were his God.
- 9:42His riches is what he adored. And Jesus says you need to adore
- 9:49me. So go and sell all that you have
- 9:54distribute to the poor. You'll have treasure in heaven
- 9:57and follow me. The Bible says these words, but
- 10:03when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was
- 10:07extremely rich. He adored his riches.
- 10:14Anything that you have that you can't give away, you don't own
- 10:20it. It owns you.
- 10:26Anything that you have that you cannot give away, you don't own
- 10:29it. It owns you.
- 10:30He was owned by his riches. He loved his riches.
- 10:34He adored his riches. He did not want to depart from
- 10:37that which was preeminent in his life.
- 10:42That was his God. He did not want to adore the one
- 10:47true God. He did not say, Lord, whatever
- 10:54you ask I will do, for you are the King of kings and Lord of
- 10:59Lords. I will follow whatever you say.
- 11:03It wasn't about selling his possessions, it was about him
- 11:05having another God that ruled in his heart that reigns supreme.
- 11:13And so it says this. Jesus looked at him and said how
- 11:17hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the Kingdom of
- 11:21God, for it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
- 11:24needle then for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 11:28They heard it said then who can be saved?
- 11:35But he said, the things that are impossible with people are
- 11:43possible with God. It's impossible for men to save
- 11:49himself. It's impossible for men to do
- 11:52anything when it comes to salvation.
- 11:54Man is dead and as trespasses his sin, he's doubly blinded by
- 11:57Satan and by himself. He cannot resurrect himself from
- 12:01the dead spiritually. God must resurrect him.
- 12:04God must give him light. God must give him faith.
- 12:07God must give him repentance. God must give him every gift in
- 12:10order for him to be saved. And the man went away, said
- 12:14Mark's gospel tells us that the Lord felt love for him.
- 12:21He came to the Lord because he had a felt need.
- 12:26He didn't come to the Lord because he had a fallen need.
- 12:32Big difference. People come to church because
- 12:36they they feel empty. They feel like they're missing
- 12:40something. They they feel like their
- 12:44marriage is is falling apart. They they feel like their life
- 12:47is in shambles. They they feel like there's no
- 12:50hope. There's nothing this they have a
- 12:51a felt need. But to be a Christian, you must
- 12:58see yourself as fallen in sin, separated from the true and
- 13:03living God that you might crowd. Oh, Lord, have mercy on my soul.
- 13:12Adoration is key when it comes to living the model life.
- 13:21And it's summed up by saying you're one who rejoices always
- 13:27that that's just a, a magnificent statement.
- 13:29You know, Paul doesn't expound on it.
- 13:31Doesn't have to. Why?
- 13:32Because First Thessalonians 213 says that when you heard the
- 13:34word of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what
- 13:37it really is, the word of God. And you put out the welcome mat
- 13:40and freely accepted it. So he doesn't have to say,
- 13:43listen, this is how you rejoice always.
- 13:45He just says rejoice always because he knows they put up the
- 13:48welcome mat to the Word and they're going to receive that
- 13:50word and obey that word. He knows that.
- 13:56So he just tells them, rejoice always.
- 14:03This is a theme throughout the New Testament.
- 14:07The Bible says these words in Philippians 31.
- 14:14Finally, brethren, rejoice in the Lord.
- 14:19Philippians 4/4 Rejoice in the Lord always.
- 14:22Romans 1417 The Kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy
- 14:26in the Holy Spirit. Glaciers 522 The fruit of the
- 14:30Spirit is joy. Philippians 33 The true
- 14:33Christian rejoices in Christ Jesus in John 13 to 17 eight
- 14:40different times in the disciples turmoil over the Lord dying the
- 14:46next day. He tells them that their joy can
- 14:49be made full in him. He wants him to understand that
- 14:54true joy only comes through him. Paul would say in Second
- 14:59Corinthians chapter 6 verse #10 I am sorrowful, yet I am always
- 15:07rejoicing. It can happen.
- 15:11Acts 2024. Paul said, I have one goal,
- 15:14that's to finish my course with joy.
- 15:19In Colossus 124 Paul said, I rejoice in my sufferings.
- 15:27James said. Consider it all joy, my
- 15:29brethren, when you fall into various trials.
- 15:37In the late 1800's, the Scottish evangelist Henry Truman said
- 15:43these words. How many prodigals are kept out
- 15:50of the Kingdom of God by the unlovely character of those who
- 15:56profess to be on the inside of that Kingdom?
- 16:03Think about that, you have unsaved friends, what is your
- 16:09attitude like around them? He poses the question that how
- 16:15many people are kept out of the Kingdom because of the attitude
- 16:17of those that are in the Kingdom.
- 16:21It was AJ Mason, an English theologian and hymn writer who
- 16:27said these words. The Christian who remains in
- 16:30sadness and depression really breaks the commandment in some
- 16:36direction or another. He mistrust God, his power, his
- 16:41Providence, and his forgiveness. That's true.
- 16:48We live in depression. We live in sadness because we
- 16:53don't really believe in the God we say we have faith in.
- 17:02Your faith works best in turmoil, in trials, in
- 17:08affliction, in persecution than anywhere else.
- 17:15If it doesn't work there, you never had to begin with because
- 17:21that's where it shines the most. Apostle Paul is a classic
- 17:26example that I love. I love what the the hymn writer
- 17:31said. William Thompson when he said
- 17:35that Jesus is all the world to him.
- 17:39Maybe you've heard this song. I'm not going to sing it for
- 17:42you, but it goes like this. Jesus is all the world to me.
- 17:45My life, my joy, my all. He is my strength from
- 17:49day-to-day. Without him I would fall.
- 17:52When I am sad to Him I go. No other one can cheer me.
- 17:58So when I am sad, He makes me glad.
- 18:02He's my friend. Jesus is all the world to me.
- 18:06My friend. And trials soar.
- 18:08I go to him for blessings, and he gives them oar and oar.
- 18:14He sends the sunshine in the rain, He sends the harvests,
- 18:18golden grain, sunshine and rain harvest of grain.
- 18:22He's my friend. Jesus is all the world to me and
- 18:28true to him I'll be. Oh how could I, this friend deny
- 18:32when he's so true to me following him I know I'm right.
- 18:37He watches or me day and night, following him by day and night
- 18:41He's my friend. Jesus is all the world to me.
- 18:46I want no better friend. I trust him now.
- 18:49I'll trust him when life's fleeting day shall end.
- 18:54Beautiful life was such a friend.
- 18:57Beautiful life that has no end. Eternal life, eternal joy.
- 19:04He's my friend. Isn't it interesting that Moses
- 19:10in Exodus 3311 was called a friend of God?
- 19:14That Abraham and James chapter 2 was called a friend of God and
- 19:20Jesus said to his disciples on the eve of the crucifixion, I no
- 19:25longer call you slaves. I call you friends.
- 19:31And greater love hath no man than this that a manly down his
- 19:35life for his friends. You're my friends.
- 19:42It means you have this extraordinary opportunity to
- 19:46know God intimately because you're his friend.
- 19:52It's no wonder the the the Christian rejoices always.
- 20:00So let me help you put a little flesh on this.
- 20:07Let me help you work through this.
- 20:11Because if the command is rejoice always, we have to ask
- 20:15ourselves the question is that me?
- 20:17Do I adore my God so much that I live a life that rejoices always
- 20:24in my God? And some of you are going
- 20:29through extreme situations, some of you are going through
- 20:35hardship, pain, your marriages, your families, affliction from
- 20:41from those who have come against you, or persecution for those
- 20:44who have come against you. Even even affliction, that's
- 20:47personal affliction. And you have to deal with those
- 20:50things. And how do you rejoice always?
- 20:54I want to give you some principles that will help you
- 20:57walk through this that are very, very practical and very, very
- 21:03instrumental and helping you live out one verse with two
- 21:11words that help you adore the truth and living God.
- 21:17Number one, you need to learn to rest in His Providence.
- 21:27Rest in the Providence of God. Remember, the sovereignty of God
- 21:33is the overall plan of God, and the Providence deals with the
- 21:37particulars of that overall plan.
- 21:41God is working in every individual in every situation to
- 21:46bring about His sovereign plan, and God's Providence is what
- 21:51describes that. You can read the book of Esther
- 21:53and realize that even though God's name is never mentioned in
- 21:57the book of Esther, the Providence of God screams all
- 22:01throughout the story of Esther. And Esther and Mordecai both had
- 22:07to learn to rest in the providential working of the
- 22:12living God. That is just so incredibly
- 22:16important to understand. Paul was the master of this.
- 22:21Listen to Acts chapter 20 and Acts chapter 20 verse 22 says,
- 22:31Now behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not
- 22:36knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy
- 22:40Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds
- 22:47and afflictions await me. But I do not consider my life of
- 22:54any account as dear to myself. So I may finish my course with
- 22:59joy and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus to
- 23:04testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.
- 23:09Paul says, I go bound to Jerusalem and I don't know what
- 23:13awaits me there, but I know that the Spirit of God has told me
- 23:15that there's going to be bonds and affliction that await me.
- 23:20But you know what? It doesn't matter because my
- 23:21life doesn't matter. What matters is the gospel.
- 23:25That's why in Philippians 1, he says being confident of this
- 23:28very thing, that he began a good work and you will complete it
- 23:31until the day of Christ. That's first number six.
- 23:33And then in verse 12 he says, now I want you to know,
- 23:35brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater
- 23:39progress of the gospel. Now where's Paul in Philippians?
- 23:43He's in prison. He's in prison.
- 23:46My circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the
- 23:49gospel so that my imprisonment, he says in the cause of Christ
- 23:55has become well known throughout the whole Praetorian Guard and
- 23:58everyone else. And that most of the brethren
- 24:01trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment have far more
- 24:05courage to speak the word of God without fear.
- 24:10So Paul and Philippians who who emphasizes rejoicing the Lord
- 24:13always says, look, listen, what's happened to me.
- 24:15My circumstances have turned out for the progress of the gospel.
- 24:21You see, we we get so, so enamored with our own personal
- 24:26lives that we forget that what is happening to us is happening
- 24:30for a purpose that goes way beyond us, so others will know
- 24:34and hear the truth of the gospel.
- 24:39You know the story of Joseph. You've read the story of Joseph.
- 24:43The end, the climax is unbelievable.
- 24:50Israel dies, Jacob dies. The sons are fearful that Jacob
- 24:57now excuse me, that Joseph now is going to enact judgement upon
- 25:02them, having brought them to Egypt, having protected them
- 25:07through famine. Jacob dies, So it says in verse
- 25:1315. When Joseph's brothers saw that
- 25:15their father was dead, they said, what if Joseph bears a
- 25:18grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong
- 25:23which he did, which we did to him?
- 25:27What if, excuse me, what if he enacts judgement upon us?
- 25:35So he sent a message to Joseph, seeing your father charged
- 25:39before he died, saying, thus you shall say to Joseph, Please
- 25:43forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers
- 25:46and their sin, for they did you wrong.
- 25:49And now please forgive the transgression of the sermons of
- 25:53the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke
- 25:59to him. Why did he weep?
- 26:04First of all, their father never said that.
- 26:08They just said their father said it because they were afraid that
- 26:10Joseph was going to act in judgement upon them, seek
- 26:13revenge. And Joseph wept because he
- 26:16thought of him as being that kind of person.
- 26:21And so it says his brothers also came and fell down before him
- 26:28and said, behold, we are your servants.
- 26:33They were begging for their lives, but Joseph said to them,
- 26:39do not be afraid, for am I in God's place?
- 26:47Am I to repay evil for evil? You see, whenever you repay evil
- 26:51for evil, you set yourself up to be in God's place, because
- 26:56vengeance is his. When you return evil for evil,
- 27:01you're saying I am God, I can handle this.
- 27:05And God says vengeance is mine, I will repay.
- 27:08And Joseph says he knows he's not God.
- 27:12I'm not in God's place. That's not my responsibility to
- 27:16do that. And so he says, As for you, you
- 27:24meant an evil against me, but God meant it for good.
- 27:30Now you don't know that verse, right?
- 27:32Genesis 50 verse #20 But you have forgotten the next phrase
- 27:38in the verse which says this God meant it for good in order to
- 27:46bring about this present result to preserve many people alive.
- 27:57You know, my God allowed you to do what you did because there
- 28:03was a greater purpose than just me.
- 28:08It was to preserve two nations, the nation of Israel and the
- 28:13nation of Egypt. And without Joseph, it would not
- 28:17have happened without all the negative circumstances and his
- 28:19imprisonment and the lion against him and being thrown
- 28:22into a pit, being sold to the Israelites.
- 28:23Without all that happening, nations would not have been
- 28:26preserved and Joseph knew that the Providence of God was at
- 28:32work to preserve many people alive.
- 28:39That is just so important to understand this and we need to
- 28:43learn to to rest in the Providence of the living God.
- 28:49The Bible says over in first Peter chapter one in this you
- 28:54greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if
- 28:57necessary, you have been distressed by various trials set
- 29:01the proof of your faith being more precious than gold, which
- 29:03is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to
- 29:06result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus
- 29:10Christ. And though you have not seen
- 29:12him, you love him, and though you do not see him now, but
- 29:16believe in him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible
- 29:22and full of glory. And then he says in chapter 4,
- 29:27beloved, do not be surprised at this fiery ordeal among you,
- 29:33which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange
- 29:37thing were happening to you. But to the degree that you share
- 29:42the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at
- 29:49the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exaltation.
- 29:56Rejoice always, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
- 30:02concerning you. As a pastor, my ministry is to
- 30:13help you understand what the Bible says and to walk you
- 30:18through how to handle difficult times, trials, severe as they
- 30:24may be, hardship, loneliness, pain, turmoil, whatever it may
- 30:31be, as a pastor, that's my job. And I was so grieved this past
- 30:38week when a pastor in Southern California of a very large
- 30:43church who tends to be more political than pastoral told his
- 30:49people that if AB495 simply Bill 495 passes in Sacramento, he
- 31:01tells them, you need to flee California.
- 31:06You need to run, pack your bags and go, he says.
- 31:12And I'm like, that's not what pastors do.
- 31:16No, no, pastors say, no matter what the bill is in the bill,
- 31:20AB495 is about how a caregiver can come and sign an affidavit,
- 31:24fill it out, sign it, take it to a school and take your child out
- 31:28of school without any identification, any approval
- 31:31from the parents and take your child out of school.
- 31:35And it goes into more detail than that.
- 31:38But he says if this bill passes, you need to run, flee
- 31:42California, pack your bags and go.
- 31:45He says, and I'm like, wait a minute, that's what did Peter
- 31:52say when they went through persecution in Jerusalem?
- 31:55Pack your bags and get out of Jerusalem.
- 31:57That's not what Peter said. No, they went to prayer.
- 32:01They trusted in God and they rested in His Providence.
- 32:05See, this is very, very important because because
- 32:10pastors had the responsibility to lead people through hardship
- 32:13and difficult times and show them how God in His Providence
- 32:16is working and that you need to be able to stand strong on the
- 32:20Bible and the truth of the word of God and to live out your
- 32:24faith. Listen, the Bible says flee
- 32:27immorality. So run away from immorality.
- 32:30Bible says flee idolatry. Run away from idolatry.
- 32:33The Bible says flee the love of money.
- 32:36So run from the love of money. The Bible never says leave your
- 32:39state because things are bad. I can't tell you to do
- 32:44something. The Bible doesn't say my job is
- 32:48to help you through difficult times.
- 32:50That's what pastors do. Political pundits don't.
- 32:55Pastors do. That's our responsibility.
- 33:00That's how we live our lives, to help people do hardship.
- 33:05So when you come to the book of Acts and you have what, the
- 33:09threat to the apostles, no longer can you preach in his
- 33:15name. If you do, you will be punished.
- 33:21What do they do? Well, let's leave Jerusalem and
- 33:25go someplace else. Flee.
- 33:27No, that's not what they did. They went back and told
- 33:29everybody else, listen to this. When they've been released,
- 33:34they, they went to their companions and reported all the
- 33:37chief priests and the elders that said to them.
- 33:40And when they heard this, they, they lifted their voices to God
- 33:43with 1 accord and said, Oh Lord, it is you who made the heavens
- 33:47and the earth and the sea and all of this in them.
- 33:50They begin to pray and, and they, they recognize God as
- 33:53creator, originator, designer of everything that they begin to
- 34:00pray. And then it says this, who by
- 34:04the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our Father David, your
- 34:06servant said, Why do the Gentiles rage and the peoples
- 34:09divides feudal things? The kings of the earth took
- 34:12their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the
- 34:15Lord and against this Christ. For truly in this city they were
- 34:19gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you
- 34:24anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles
- 34:29and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your
- 34:35purpose predestined to occur. They are acknowledging that God
- 34:42in his sovereignty and in his Providence, design Herod, pilot,
- 34:47the Gentiles, and even his own people, Israel, to crucify their
- 34:53Messiah. They're acknowledging that and
- 34:59they said, and now, Lord, take note of their threats and grant
- 35:03that your bond servants may speak your word with all
- 35:07confidence that that's how you deal with Sacramento.
- 35:12Lord, take note of Governor Newsom's threats here.
- 35:18We pay evil for evil. God will do that.
- 35:21Lord, take note of their threats, but Lord, give us a
- 35:26confidence to preach the Word with confident, with boldness
- 35:31and with courage. Give us a strength to do that.
- 35:35This pastor wants all of us people to make a statement in
- 35:38Sacramento. I'm like, you don't make
- 35:40statements. We preach the gospel.
- 35:43That's what the church does. The church was never designed to
- 35:46make a statement. Never in the early church.
- 35:48Do you find them marching on the Capitol?
- 35:52Never. Do you find them marching
- 35:54against laws? You don't do that.
- 35:58That's what Christians do. Christians stand strong on the
- 36:02principles of God's Word, and they preach the gospel with
- 36:05confidence. As a pastor, my responsibility
- 36:10is to help you understand not what's happened in Sacramento,
- 36:15but how to deal with what takes place in Sacramento and how you
- 36:20deal with the difficulties that come down the Pike through laws
- 36:23that are given. That's my responsibility as your
- 36:27pastor. I want you to learn to rest in
- 36:30the province of God. So, so important to learn to
- 36:36trust that God is working through every individual, every
- 36:40circumstance, every situation to bring about a greater purpose
- 36:43and that is the spread of the gospel in the glory of His
- 36:45Kingdom. Be heavenly minded.
- 36:53Hudson Taylor, great missionary China was influenced by a young
- 37:02lady's hymn. Her name was Jean Sophia
- 37:11Piggott. Her brother was an associate of
- 37:18Hudson Taylor in China and she died at the age of 37.
- 37:26But she wrote a very familiar hymn that hopefully most of us
- 37:31all know, and that hymn is Jesus.
- 37:36I am resting, Resting. It was said that Hudson Taylor
- 37:49will be found at various times either whistling or humming or
- 37:57singing the hymn Jesus I Am Resting, Resting.
- 38:06After his precious wife died, they would hear him in the night
- 38:12singing the hymn Jesus I Am Resting, Resting during the dark
- 38:22and gruesome days of the box of rebellion.
- 38:27The song was on his lips and one day, after hearing the dreadful
- 38:34news about missionaries being held hostage, he simply began to
- 38:39whistle the tune to Jesus. I am Resting, Resting.
- 38:47He was angrily questioned about how he could whistle during such
- 38:54terrible times. This is his response.
- 38:58Would you have me anxious and troubled?
- 39:03That would not help them and would certainly incapacitate me
- 39:11for my work. I have just to roll the burden
- 39:17on the Lord. What a great response.
- 39:23Let me read you the words that Him.
- 39:26Jesus. I am resting, resting in the joy
- 39:31of what Thou art. I am finding out the greatness
- 39:35of Thy loving heart. Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee,
- 39:40and Thy beauty fills my soul, for by Thy transforming power
- 39:46Thou has made me whole. Simply trusting the Lord Jesus.
- 39:52I behold Thee as Thou art, and Thy love, so pure and
- 39:57changeless, satisfies my heart, satisfies its deepest longings,
- 40:06meets, supplies It's every need, compasses me round with
- 40:11blessing. Vine is love indeed.
- 40:18Ever lift thy face upon me as I work and wait for thee resting
- 40:25Neath thy smile, Lord Jesus. Earth's dark shadows flee
- 40:32brightness of my Father's glory. Sunshine of my Father's face.
- 40:39Keep me ever trusting. Resting.
- 40:42Fill me with Thy grace. A man who learned to rest in the
- 40:48Providence of God through the capturing and murdering of many
- 40:53missionaries, through the loss of his precious wife.
- 40:58God was providentially working in and through his life.
- 41:02He was a man of great impact, used for the glory of God's
- 41:07wonderful Kingdom. That's because he learned to
- 41:11rest in the Providence of God. He could rejoice always.
- 41:21My, my prayer for all of us is that we would learn to rest in
- 41:28His Providence so we could rejoice always.
- 41:32But there's more to just resting in His Providence.
- 41:36I have six more principles to give to you, so you'll have to
- 41:40come back next week. But in the meantime, between now
- 41:45and next Sunday, if the Lord tarries, this is the will of God
- 41:50concerning you, that you rejoice always, you pray without
- 41:55ceasing, and then everything give thanks.
- 41:59Let's pray. Father, we thank you for today,
- 42:03all that you do, for surely you are great and You are greatly to
- 42:08be praised. May we be a people who rejoices
- 42:12always because we know that you're at work for a great and
- 42:18better purpose than just our own personal lives, for the sake of
- 42:23your glorious Kingdom. And we see it from your
- 42:26perspective and learn to give you all the praise and all the
- 42:31glory and all the honor in Jesus name, Amen.
