- 0:01Marine conservation is in trouble. Ocean
- 0:03protection is in trouble. I am here on
- 0:06the beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii,
- 0:08and I've seen some things that make me
- 0:11worry. And not just here, but I see it
- 0:13happening everywhere. The regular
- 0:16conversations I have in person and
- 0:18online. People are not concerned about
- 0:21the ocean. And that is a problem. That's
- 0:23what we're going to talk about on today's
- 0:24episode of the How to Protect the Ocean
- 0:26podcast. Let's start the show.
- 0:30Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 0:31exciting episode of the How to Protect
- 0:33the Ocean podcast. I'm your host Andrew
- 0:35Lewin. And this is the podcast we find
- 0:36out what's happening with the ocean, how
- 0:38you can speak up for the ocean and what
- 0:39you can do to live for a better ocean by
- 0:42taking action. And on today's episode,
- 0:44we're going to be coming to you from the
- 0:46beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii, where
- 0:48I've been here for the past 11 days. This
- 0:51is my 11th day of a family vacation, a
- 0:53long, long overdue family
- 0:55vacation. And I am in paradise.
- 0:59This island is gorgeous. We've been to
- 1:01all parts of the island, the east, the
- 1:03west, the north shore, and it is in the
- 1:06south and it's beautiful. It's absolutely
- 1:07stunning. We've seen Hawaiian monk seals
- 1:10on the beach. We've seen Hawaiian monk
- 1:13seals resting in areas that have been
- 1:16just phenomenal lookouts.
- 1:18We've seen whales playing in the water on
- 1:21lookouts as well. We've seen whales just
- 1:23on a whale watching tour. We've seen sea
- 1:25turtle. I just got splashed by water and
- 1:27it's very, very refreshing in this hot
- 1:30sun this morning. But we've seen sea
- 1:32turtles, we've swam with sea turtles that
- 1:34are here all of the time. And it is
- 1:36absolutely phenomenal to see some of the
- 1:39protections or the sea, the protections
- 1:41that are enacted through the endangered
- 1:43species act with the sea turtles and with
- 1:46the Hawaiian monk seals.
- 1:47And the volunteers that come out to help
- 1:50protect them working with government to
- 1:52be able to say, Hey, you know what? We
- 1:54love these sea turtles. We love these
- 1:55Hawaiian monk seals and we want to
- 1:57protect them as much as possible.
- 1:58The people here, some of you may or may
- 2:00not be able to see over my shoulder,
- 2:02there are some people who are just
- 2:03enjoying surfing earlier this morning.
- 2:06There were people paddling and it was
- 2:07just been amazing to see
- 2:09how many people use the ocean.
- 2:11How many people continue to be connected
- 2:13to the ocean here on the beautiful island
- 2:15of Oahu in Hawaii? And this is something
- 2:19that is a dream of mine to be here is my
- 2:21second time here. And it's something that
- 2:23I just enjoy seeing the ocean each and
- 2:26every day. It's definitely inspired me
- 2:28even more to bring you
- 2:31messaging about the ocean.
- 2:33And I want to talk about today because I
- 2:35feel as though marine protection, marine
- 2:38conservation is in trouble. There are a
- 2:41lot of people, whether you speak to them
- 2:42online, whether you speak to them in
- 2:45person who are not
- 2:46worried about the ocean.
- 2:47In fact, not only are they not worried
- 2:48about the ocean, they just don't know a
- 2:49lot about the ocean. I don't blame them.
- 2:51It's not necessarily their fault. We just
- 2:53don't have a lot of resources that they
- 2:57can go to on a regular basis that are
- 2:59part of mainstream TV or mainstream TV.
- 3:02Or mainstream movies or mainstream news.
- 3:05The only time we see news is when there's
- 3:07a tragedy or there's climate change or a
- 3:10quote unquote shark attack. That's where
- 3:12we start to see us talking about marine
- 3:15conservation or marine protection. Even
- 3:17in documentaries, we see the major
- 3:19problems around ocean conservation or a
- 3:21certain part of climate change.
- 3:23But we are not seeing the solutions. They
- 3:26just focus on the problems because it
- 3:27makes good TV. It makes good
- 3:29documentaries. It makes people click on
- 3:32articles. But it doesn't provide people
- 3:35with hope. It doesn't provide people with
- 3:36the education needed to be able to say,
- 3:39hey, you know what? The ocean's in
- 3:40trouble and there's a way around it.
- 3:42We can actually protect this place, but
- 3:44we need your help. We need your not only
- 3:47day to day life, but understanding of how
- 3:50the political system works, understanding
- 3:52of who will vote for what, how people can
- 3:55change, whether it be in government
- 3:57levels, whether it be federal, state or
- 3:59provincial or local levels, or whether it
- 4:02be you as a person or as a community to
- 4:05be able to bring ocean conservation to
- 4:07the forefront of what we need to do.
- 4:10Every second breath that we take is due
- 4:13to the ocean. Think about that for a
- 4:15second. Every second breath is due to the
- 4:18ocean. The oxygen produced by the ocean
- 4:20provides us with every second breath we
- 4:23take. If we destroy the
- 4:24ocean, we destroy ourselves.
- 4:27Humans need the ocean and we need to
- 4:29learn about the ocean. We need to hate to
- 4:33say it. Subscribe to channels like this
- 4:35to be able to say, hey, you know what? We
- 4:38need to learn more about what we can do
- 4:40with the ocean, how we can protect it and
- 4:43how we can learn more about it.
- 4:46I've been here for the last 11 days with
- 4:48my family and it's been phenomenal to
- 4:50see, but there have been some
- 4:51disappointing things that I have seen. I
- 4:54haven't seen a lot of signs around town
- 4:57talking about, hey, you know what?
- 4:59Discard of your garbage, discard of your
- 5:02plastics or don't use single plastics.
- 5:04This is not to say a lot who is against
- 5:06using single plastics or for using single
- 5:08plastics. This is about saying general
- 5:10messaging around tourist spots where
- 5:12tourists need to be educated and how we
- 5:15act in and around the
- 5:16ocean is extremely important.
- 5:19I've come here to try and not only visit
- 5:21and enjoy and connect with the ocean, but
- 5:23I want to take care of the ocean while
- 5:25I'm here and make sure that anything that
- 5:26I do, whatever footprint that I leave is
- 5:29minimal on the ocean. I love to be
- 5:31connected. I've gone snorkeling.
- 5:33I've gone whale watching. I've gone to
- 5:36the different beaches to see sea turtles
- 5:38and gone on long hikes to look out at
- 5:40these beautiful views. And I want to
- 5:42protect that. I want to see albatrosses,
- 5:44which I have to see that
- 5:44they're absolutely amazing.
- 5:46I want to see just beautiful things that
- 5:48are around town. I want to see this. I
- 5:51want to see the culture and there's a lot
- 5:53of that here. What there isn't a lot of
- 5:55is the emphasis on how important the
- 5:58ocean is to the Hawaiian
- 6:00culture, to the Polynesian culture.
- 6:03I would love to see that in different
- 6:03places, but not enough. And I would love
- 6:06to see that even more in every country,
- 6:08including my own in Canada, see more of
- 6:11the integration of indigenous populations
- 6:13and how their culture integrates with
- 6:15ocean protection and how
- 6:16Canadians can do more of that.
- 6:19And that's something that every platform,
- 6:21including mine, has to bring to light is
- 6:23the fact that we need to talk about the
- 6:25ocean. We need to talk about how ocean
- 6:28protection will actually help us in the
- 6:29end, how we decrease the amount of money
- 6:32we spend on natural disasters, how it
- 6:34actually decrease the amount of money we
- 6:37spend on changing the environment and
- 6:40making things more
- 6:40concrete instead of more natural.
- 6:43The amount of money that we lose because
- 6:46of the lack of ocean conservation,
- 6:48because of consequences of climate
- 6:50change, because of consequences of losing
- 6:52land to build concrete structures to
- 6:54fortify that land and not understanding
- 6:57the actual processes that go around it is
- 6:59extremely harmful and
- 7:00extremely expensive.
- 7:01And we always talk about the economy when
- 7:03it comes to voting a new government in
- 7:05which my country is about to do. And we
- 7:08never really talk about the ocean. We
- 7:11never really talk about how important it
- 7:12is to protect it, how important is to
- 7:14protect fisheries, how important is to
- 7:16our safety in terms of climate
- 7:18change and natural disasters.
- 7:19This is something that's extremely
- 7:21important. It takes a lot to restore, but
- 7:23it doesn't take a lot to conserve. It's
- 7:24less money to conserve and protect. And I
- 7:27feel that this is a call to action to
- 7:29say, hey, you know what, we need to make
- 7:31sure that we protect this ocean.
- 7:34So that's the message today. That's the
- 7:37message I've been thinking about for the
- 7:38last 11 days as I arrived on this
- 7:40wonderful island of Oahu in the Hawaiian
- 7:42Islands and seeing the culture and seeing
- 7:45the connection to the ocean of the people
- 7:47here who surf, who canoe, who paddle, who
- 7:49kayak, who dive, who
- 7:51snorkel, who just enjoy the ocean.
- 7:54And the tourists come here every day and
- 7:57enjoy this place. And we want to see it
- 7:59protected as well as other beautiful
- 8:01ocean places, including in my country,
- 8:03Canada. And to be able to say, hey, you
- 8:05know what, we did a great job here. We've
- 8:06protected ourselves.
- 8:07We've been able to protect our every
- 8:09second breath and we've been able to
- 8:11protect the ocean. So hit me up on a
- 8:13comment down below if you're watching
- 8:14this on YouTube or Spotify. If you want
- 8:17to help protect the ocean and you want to
