Latest / Armstrong & Getty One More Thing / Not a Plan, But a Designation
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's actually not a planet. It's a designation. It's one
- 0:02Speaker 1: more thing that was.
- 0:07Speaker 2: An affectation you've had there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You can't fly what I say, it was not a planet,
- 0:15Speaker 1: it's a destination. You can't fly in a designation you
- 0:19Speaker 1: in it. So any plane can be air Force one.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's just whatever plane the president is on is designated
- 0:26Speaker 1: air Force one.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Any flying object the president is on is air Force one.
- 0:32Speaker 1: The helicopters are Marine one. Okay, so presumably if the
- 0:36Speaker 1: President went up in a dirigible, that would be air
- 0:39Speaker 1: Force one, a rigible one. Uh yeah.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Literally, President was headed to Switzerland today and they had
- 0:46Speaker 2: to turn around because they had an electrical problem, or
- 0:48Speaker 2: at least that's what they're saying. I don't know some
- 0:50Speaker 2: people you find it.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Oh is that right? Yeah? I hadn't seen anybody yet.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I just heard skepticism, some experts saying they've got like
- 0:58Speaker 2: so many redundant backups systems, those on the Air Force one,
- 1:02Speaker 2: which I'm sure they do that although likely that you
- 1:06Speaker 2: would just turn around for an electric problem. You just
- 1:09Speaker 2: switch to the backup, to the backup, to the backup
- 1:12Speaker 2: and keep going.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Well, it depends on how many redundancies you have. I mean,
- 1:16Speaker 1: if you're just going on a trip that could be
- 1:18Speaker 1: delayed for three hours, will you trouble check the problem?
- 1:22Speaker 1: I would go ahead and do what they did. Feel otherwise,
- 1:24Speaker 1: you know, it's the whole there's actually a pretty good
- 1:26Speaker 1: joke about bad news here. Ladies and gentlemen. We've lost
- 1:31Speaker 1: one of the engines, but don't worry. We have four
- 1:32Speaker 1: engines and should be fine. And the tilt comes back
- 1:35Speaker 1: on bad news. Folks, you've lost second of our four engines,
- 1:38Speaker 1: but we can fly perfectly fine. I can't remember what
- 1:40Speaker 1: the what the punchline of it is, but the point is,
- 1:45Speaker 1: don't don't assume everything's going to go fine after the
- 1:47Speaker 1: first screw up.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, I also think that why would they tell us
- 1:53Speaker 2: anything other than we had like a problem turned around,
- 1:56Speaker 2: could be freaking anything.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, right, In fact, if something crazy covert happened, that's
- 2:03Speaker 1: good policy. Sure claim it was. Yeah, we forgot to
- 2:06Speaker 1: pack the dia coke and the president is pissed, so
- 2:09Speaker 1: they forgot the McDonald's right exactly. Yeah. Anyway, Josh Rogan,
- 2:14Speaker 1: who we've chatted with more than once on the Armstrong
- 2:16Speaker 1: and Getty Show, knows something about the Air Force one
- 2:19Speaker 1: fleet fifteen.
- 2:25Speaker 3: This happens all the time. You know, it's a really
- 2:27Speaker 3: old fleet and there's a constant state of disrepair. It's
- 2:32Speaker 3: much more rare for Air Force one than it is
- 2:34Speaker 3: for like the planes that the Vice President of the
- 2:36Speaker 3: Security of Defense and Security State might fly on. And
- 2:39Speaker 3: so I think that the fact that they caught it
- 2:41Speaker 3: early and they turned back it shouldn't really be a
- 2:43Speaker 3: big problem. But it is kind of shocking to people
- 2:45Speaker 3: who don't know. But it's kind of an open secret
- 2:48Speaker 3: amongst the reporters who travel with senior officials that the
- 2:51Speaker 3: US plane is very old and the planes are not
- 2:53Speaker 3: in good condition.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Thirty five year old plane. So why in the world,
- 2:57Speaker 2: with the amount of money we spend on everything in
- 3:00Speaker 2: this country, would the president be flying around in a
- 3:03Speaker 2: thirty five year old plane.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Well, let's harken back to was it last year or
- 3:07Speaker 1: the year before where the cutteries were given the president
- 3:10Speaker 1: to seven forty seven? That's right? And uh and and
- 3:17Speaker 1: Trump was making a big deal out of how be
- 3:19Speaker 1: fought behind schedule. Boeing was that they were supposed to
- 3:21Speaker 1: have built a new set of Air Force ones or
- 3:25Speaker 1: whatever it is. Yeah, I don't know. That's it's it's
- 3:29Speaker 1: not all of it's not a great look for American
- 3:33Speaker 1: industry anyway. I've never been on the current Air Force one.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I have a friend who has, who says it's pretty amazing.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I've been on old ones, a couple of old ones.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I can't believe.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I've never been to the Reagan National Library, and because
- 3:47Speaker 2: they got his plane there so you can see what
- 3:50Speaker 2: an air Force one looks like in the presidential suite
- 3:52Speaker 2: and all that sort of stuff, I've never done that.
- 3:54Speaker 1: How have I done that?
- 3:54Speaker 2: I got to do that with my kids. I'm gonna
- 3:56Speaker 2: do that in the next couple of weekends.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I'm vowing right now. There is a wonderful airplane museum
- 4:02Speaker 1: in the Seattle Tacoma area. I can't remember the name
- 4:05Speaker 1: of it. I've been to that one they have. I
- 4:07Speaker 1: think it's Nixon's Air Force one there, which is super fun. It's,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, obviously a little more old timing, not quite
- 4:13Speaker 1: as amazing as the new ones. But I've been reading
- 4:16Speaker 1: about air Force One. It's packed with secret tech functioning,
- 4:20Speaker 1: is a flying command center with and the lists here include,
- 4:24Speaker 1: as I'm sure you'll notice, some wow stuff and also
- 4:28Speaker 1: some are you kidding me. Stuff. I'm not sure how
- 4:31Speaker 1: up to date this list is, but anyway, flying command
- 4:33Speaker 1: center with military grade secure communications, EMP, hardened electronics, an
- 4:39Speaker 1: advanced missile defense like laser jamming and flares, plus in
- 4:44Speaker 1: flight fueling for unlimited range, it could fly forever.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Does it have the like elastic stretchy thing in the
- 4:51Speaker 2: seat in front of you? See you? I can put
- 4:53Speaker 2: your cup in there or something.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'll bet it does. I'll bet it does, yeah, or
- 4:57Speaker 1: even cup holders. This list key features include secure encrypted
- 5:04Speaker 1: lines Wi Fi. Oh wait a minute, you don't.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Have Wi Fi. You just gotta let China take over.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I mean, come on, oh man, When I get on
- 5:13Speaker 1: a flight that doesn't have the Wi Fi, I'm like,
- 5:16Speaker 1: what am I at Kitty Hawk with the Wright brothers?
- 5:19Speaker 1: I know?
- 5:19Speaker 2: I like going on and they'll make the announcement. Sorry,
- 5:23Speaker 2: we're not gonna have Wi Fi in this flight. Sorry
- 5:25Speaker 2: for the fans, Sorry for the inconvenience.
- 5:27Speaker 1: You just ruined my wife, right right, I can't believe you.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Let's see countermeasures against you said we were down a
- 5:36Speaker 1: wing and we're gonna do our best. Then we got
- 5:38Speaker 1: a white wife. Oh geez, let's see they have countermeasures
- 5:43Speaker 1: against attacks like d I r CM lasers whatever those are,
- 5:48Speaker 1: chaff and flares, and a hardened system to survive a
- 5:50Speaker 1: nuclear blast. Wow. Wow. The current Air Force one features
- 5:56Speaker 1: eighty five plus telephones fax machines.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Many five telephone seems like a lot.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Wait a minute, Wait a minute, a fax machine? What
- 6:05Speaker 1: am I doing? Am I in touch with the like
- 6:10Speaker 1: the old timey pharmacy in my town or something? Wow?
- 6:15Speaker 2: With floppy disks? Yeah, you get a blockbuster for some reason.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Internet for secure encrypted calls top secret to non secure
- 6:24Speaker 1: video conferencing. Uh, let's see.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:27Speaker 1: The president can broadcast speeches live from mid air satellite
- 6:32Speaker 1: length down to you know the ground. It's kind of
- 6:34Speaker 1: obvious when you think about it, but yeah, he could
- 6:36Speaker 1: do a complete, you know, national address. My fellow Americans,
- 6:41Speaker 1: we are at war with Greenland from the air, which
- 6:44Speaker 1: is kind of cool. Uh. Defense and security EMP hardening
- 6:49Speaker 1: electronics and wiring are shielded to with stand electromagnetic pulses
- 6:54Speaker 1: from nuclear blasts. It's a good thing too, because I've
- 6:58Speaker 1: read articles about that how EMP weapons are going to
- 7:03Speaker 1: be the holy f weapons of warfare. When it breaks out,
- 7:08Speaker 1: then all of a sudden, everything that's powered by electricity
- 7:11Speaker 1: will not work. It might be what we used in Venezuela.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It could be something like that. Yeah, I wonder. Oh,
- 7:17Speaker 1: let's see missile defense equipped with Oh there it is
- 7:22Speaker 1: directional infrared countermeasures. That's DIRCM lasers to blind heat seeking
- 7:27Speaker 1: missiles and chaff and flare dispensers to decoy them radar jamming.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It's armored. The airframe and windows are armored to resist attacks.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You can do in flight refueling. Self Sufficiency has a
- 7:42Speaker 1: self contained baggage loader and large galleys to serve meals
- 7:46Speaker 1: from up to one hundred people, with thousands of meals
- 7:49Speaker 1: in storage.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Thousands of meals in case they have to, like they
- 7:54Speaker 2: thought they might have to with W after nine to eleven.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Just keep flying around for a really long time.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Right, a self contained baggage loader.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Uh, it's just a little guy in a cage they
- 8:08Speaker 2: keep under the plane.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I figured it was a bag bot, but no, it's
- 8:13Speaker 1: actually a wow.
- 8:14Speaker 2: That's suppose you suppose Trump's got a full sized bathroom.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He's not squeezing into that little bathroom, my air bathroom.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yea to sit on that seat. Oh, he's
- 8:24Speaker 1: got a gold toilet seat in there guaranteed. Yeah. Yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I mean if you look at the oval office, which
- 8:29Speaker 1: you've described as looking like a Chinese restaurant, to me,
- 8:32Speaker 1: it looks like the throne room in uh, you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: Brunei or something like that. Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Southwest flight recently there was a big old boy headed
- 8:40Speaker 2: to the bathroom, and I thought, I don't want to
- 8:42Speaker 2: see him go to the bathroom, but I would like
- 8:44Speaker 2: to know the mechanics of how this is gonna work.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I just write much as I'd like to mock you
- 8:49Speaker 1: for that, that that vision, But no, I I've I've
- 8:51Speaker 1: thought the same thing. There's no excuse me, excuse me,
- 8:55Speaker 1: flight attendant, can you explain to me how that is
- 8:57Speaker 1: going to work? Oh? And or super tall guys, ladies
- 9:03Speaker 1: you you might not know this, but you if you're
- 9:07Speaker 1: standing to relieve yourself if you're over like five six, Jesus, wow,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you gotta you gotta crane your neck or hunch or whatever.
- 9:19Speaker 1: It's terrible.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Oh you poor things.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Childbirth Uh wow, the Trump card and then let's see. Uh.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The creature comforts include private quarters, conference rooms, office space,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and a medical facility. Does not mention the size of
- 9:36Speaker 1: the turlet facilities, uh connectivity blah blah blah. Air First
- 9:41Speaker 1: one isn't just a plane. It's a secure flying fortress
- 9:44Speaker 1: and command center built to keep the president in command
- 9:46Speaker 1: during any crisis.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So you think it went a really really big old
- 9:51Speaker 2: boys going down the aisle, You could say to the
- 9:53Speaker 2: UH air waitress, Yeah, there's gonna need to be somebody
- 9:56Speaker 2: to mop with in there in about five minutes, because
- 9:58Speaker 2: there's no possible that guy can do what he needs
- 10:04Speaker 2: to do.
- 10:05Speaker 1: It's a gotta be a miserable experience.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Oh I would have to be first, raise your hand
- 10:10Speaker 2: and make sure you go excuse me, air waitress.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and enjoy the hawker in your coffee. A sweetheart, sweetheart,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you legs. Hey, I got a question like that? Yeah, wow,
- 10:30Speaker 1: what would you know? What would it cost to I'm
- 10:37Speaker 1: thinking like toilet first class? Mm hmmm. Maybe you got
- 10:42Speaker 1: the same size seats as coach or whatever, maybe the
- 10:44Speaker 1: same experience, but like you have a reserved, really nice bathroom.
- 10:50Speaker 1: What would that cost?
- 10:53Speaker 2: That's an interesting idea. So you're in coach, but you
- 10:58Speaker 2: get the first class bathroom kind of a.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean because first class bathrooms are just bathrooms, right, Yeah,
- 11:03Speaker 1: well that's maybe eliminate the first class seats, but make
- 11:06Speaker 1: the bathroom the first the first class experience is the bathroom,
- 11:11Speaker 1: or that's just another tier of service. I mean you
- 11:15Speaker 1: could get the first class seats and bathrooms, although again
- 11:18Speaker 1: first class doesn't get first class bathrooms. There's bathrooms and
- 11:21Speaker 1: then yeah wow, I mean I like leg room. I like,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you know, not having some big old boy pressed up
- 11:28Speaker 1: against me, but like to have a really nice bathroom
- 11:32Speaker 1: and maybe a reservation system. Mister Getty, mister Getty, party
- 11:36Speaker 1: of one. Yes, yes, we're ready for you. Oh lovely,
- 11:39Speaker 1: thank you. I'm going to go to lock up the aisle.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna need from ten to ten thirty.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That's gonna cost you. This is why I fast before
- 11:51Speaker 1: I go on an airplane.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why my son does.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I just I don't even want to ever see that bathroom. Well,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I guess that's it.
