Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome to Brief Recess. I'm Michael Foote.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm Melissa Malbranch.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Today we're going to talk about Dolly Parton's death and
- 0:12Speaker 1: the suspicious circumstances around the Kardashian sisters. We're going to
- 0:16Speaker 1: talk about the GOP majority and how they accomplished Lake America.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're going to talk about all the news and bananas,
- 0:21Speaker 1: how you're not a New Yorker until your partner sleeps
- 0:23Speaker 1: with your brother. We're going to sit down with our
- 0:25Speaker 1: favorite Broadway boop, Hannah Solo, and we're also going to
- 0:29Speaker 1: answer all your wicked and wild tales from the DMs,
- 0:31Speaker 1: so stick around. I can never pull off a jump.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I feel like I've tried on a lot of jumpsuits.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I've seen you in a romper.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Can you stop pruning the foliage?
- 0:45Speaker 2: It bothers me for some reason.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It gets caught in the top.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I don't know why.
- 0:49Speaker 1: You don't like that?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Weird. The most random things annoy me.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You know that. Remember when Eric Botcher told us that
- 0:56Speaker 1: he doesn't, his parents.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Plant artificial plants in the yard.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Right, he got them really good artificial plants. In the yard,
- 1:03Speaker 2: he said?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Okay. That's interesting. I have a friend of mine who
- 1:06Speaker 2: has artificial flowers in a pot in front of her
- 1:09Speaker 2: house on either side.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Oh, maybe it wasn't Eric Botcher. Maybe it was you. Yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I know Eric Botcher bought his parents like a fake
- 1:17Speaker 2: rubber tree plant.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I'm always mixing people up.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You know what I do all the time? This is
- 1:22Speaker 2: really terrible. When I hear that somebody has died, like
- 1:26Speaker 2: a famous person.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Sure. It hasn't happened lately.
- 1:30Speaker 2: No. So, yeah, there isn't anybody who's died lately where
- 1:33Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I thought they were already dead.
- 1:36Speaker 2: But usually I already think they're dead. And I'm like, oh,
- 1:39Speaker 2: so-and-so is still alive? I thought they were dead.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Listen, Dolly Parton died. I know.
- 1:47Speaker 2: That's actually, you know.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I suspect foul play.
- 1:53Speaker 2: She was 80.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And you know what we don't know?
- 1:57Speaker 2: What don't we know?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Where were the Kardashians when Dolly Parton died?
- 2:01Speaker 2: Why are you doing this?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Because I know that they are clawing at the archival
- 2:07Speaker 1: outfits to squeeze their bodies into the Dolly Parton looks
- 2:12Speaker 1: for the next Met Gala. Fair. So I want to
- 2:15Speaker 1: know where they are. I want to know an alibi
- 2:18Speaker 1: from KK.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I feel like here's what I think. Given what we
- 2:22Speaker 2: know about Ms. Parton, I think that if they would
- 2:26Speaker 2: have just asked her, she would have loaned it to them.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I really do think so. Yeah, she was so generous
- 2:31Speaker 1: like that. She was so generous.
- 2:32Speaker 2: She would just be like, sure.
- 2:34Speaker 1: We need to protect the archival outfits from the Kardashians
- 2:38Speaker 1: for sure.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I think, I mean, yeah, I'm pretty sure they have.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Let's get into a sidebar on Dolly Parton.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Okay, let's. What's interesting about Dolly Parton is that it's
- 2:49Speaker 2: one of those things where she was just always there.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Like my entire life, Dolly Parton was just there, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and didn't think about her one way or another. But
- 2:59Speaker 2: every time she popped up, she was cute and bubbly
- 3:02Speaker 2: and she had some songs you could sing along to.
- 3:04Speaker 1: She was never like doing her big one where she
- 3:06Speaker 1: was like, you know, I'm going to go on a.
- 3:08Speaker 1: 200-city world tour, bombard you with an album. There's going
- 3:13Speaker 1: to be a billion-dollar media blitz where you can't get
- 3:17Speaker 1: away from me. She was always there, being iconic, being
- 3:20Speaker 1: her incredible self.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yes, and just being one of these people that everybody
- 3:25Speaker 2: gravitated towards, right? Because she was so bubbly and cute
- 3:30Speaker 2: and everything, even when she spoke about serious things. Here
- 3:35Speaker 2: is what I find interesting. Outrageous.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Outraging.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Enraging. It makes me absolutely sick. I don't know why.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Melissa's hands are pressed in prayer. She's invoking the Lord.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Because I'm just trying to understand, right? The President of
- 3:55Speaker 2: the United States keeps on doing this one thing that
- 3:59Speaker 2: I think is so fucking weird.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Piss off Melissa using this one weird trick.
- 4:05Speaker 2: He keeps on generating, or somebody on his team, they
- 4:09Speaker 2: keep on generating AI images of him doing something, right?
- 4:13Speaker 2: So I think he tweeted that like he knew her
- 4:18Speaker 2: and that she loved him, but instead of, and here's
- 4:23Speaker 2: the thing, right? From now and from when we knew
- 4:27Speaker 2: him before, if there is anything that Donald Trump has
- 4:30Speaker 2: always been is a whore for a photo op, right?
- 4:33Speaker 2: Like he is, He's hopping in a selfie.
- 4:37Speaker 1: He always, he wants.
- 4:38Speaker 2: To be there. So if he did not take a
- 4:42Speaker 2: photo of him and Dolly Parton together and post that,
- 4:46Speaker 2: it's because it doesn't exist.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Right. He's got about 50 photos with Jeffrey Epstein. Sure.
- 4:51Speaker 1: When he showed him, he would still, I think if
- 4:53Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein were still alive, he would be hopping in
- 4:55Speaker 1: a photo with him. He'd be like, well, he's getting
- 4:58Speaker 1: a lot of coverage.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So he generated this AI photo of him and Dolly
- 5:03Speaker 2: walking arm in arm together. And it's, you know, again,
- 5:08Speaker 2: let us for a moment forget what kind of president
- 5:13Speaker 2: he is, right? Let's forget for a moment that he's
- 5:17Speaker 2: killing the country. Just for a second. Just for a second.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Isn't it weird how he keeps on doing this? Like
- 5:25Speaker 2: he's generating these AI photos of himself as Jesus himself.
- 5:30Speaker 2: A doctor.
- 5:31Speaker 1: A doctor saving soldiers.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A doctor saving soldiers. Wait, actually.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I feel like where there's no water left for the
- 5:39Speaker 1: data centers, we're in a drought.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I just find it so strange. And I just don't understand.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Are the people who love him, are they looking at
- 5:48Speaker 2: this and being like, oh, yeah. So he's Dolly Parton.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Here he is with the plans of the new ballroom
- 5:55Speaker 2: walking Armand, not Armand Arm, but walking George Washington.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Right?
- 6:00Speaker 2: He's the Pope.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Plans for the ballroom walking arm in arm with Dolly Parton?
- 6:04Speaker 2: No, no, no. With George Washington.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Not arm in arm, though. But he's leading George Washington
- 6:09Speaker 2: on a tour looking at the new ballroom.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So he's saying this dead president would... Would have loved
- 6:17Speaker 1: my plan. My plan for the ballroom. Right.
- 6:20Speaker 2: He's generated a photo of himself.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Because there's no living former president who would say that
- 6:26Speaker 1: the ballroom's a good idea. He had to get George Washington.
- 6:29Speaker 2: But it's so... I just don't understand.
- 6:32Speaker 1: It's so stupid.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But it's not just stupid.
- 6:35Speaker 1: It's actually really confusing.
- 6:36Speaker 2: It's so confusing.
- 6:38Speaker 1: It doesn't make any sense.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And it's so....
- 6:42Speaker 1: Someone signed up for the ChatGPT Pro on his team
- 6:45Speaker 1: and they're like, we've got to get the $ 15. 99 worth
- 6:48Speaker 1: of this. We've got the Claude Fable downloaded on his iPad.
- 6:52Speaker 1: We've got to use it or we're going to run
- 6:54Speaker 1: out of usage credits.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I find it actually deeply concerning because I think it
- 7:01Speaker 2: just shows a part of him... He is so unhinged, right?
- 7:07Speaker 2: And you're the president of the United States. Don't you
- 7:10Speaker 2: have anything better to do? Why don't you have anything
- 7:13Speaker 2: better to do? You're laughing.
- 7:15Speaker 3: I am dead.
- 7:16Speaker 1: This is my trauma response.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I am so serious about this.
- 7:20Speaker 1: It is. What are you?
- 7:22Speaker 3: What are you doing?
- 7:23Speaker 1: What email are you not reading while you're doing this, right?
- 7:26Speaker 1: Or like what treaty did you, you forgot to sign
- 7:29Speaker 1: that housing bill.
- 7:30Speaker 2: You forgot to sign the housing bill, but now it's
- 7:33Speaker 2: Lake America. Fuck you.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yes, yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I mean, get out of here.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Lake America, right. He had time for that. Let's get
- 7:39Speaker 1: into algorithm as showing on Lake America. What was he
- 7:42Speaker 1: distracting from? What was actually going on? Was it because
- 7:45Speaker 1: there were strikes in Iran? I think that's what it was.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I think that's what it is.
- 7:48Speaker 1: It was the same time this weekend.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Because I think this is This might be the first
- 7:53Speaker 2: time or the first time in a while where the
- 7:56Speaker 2: United States and Iran have exchanged fire.
- 7:59Speaker 1: In like over a month. Yes.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Correct.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 2: So, I mean, I think that this president and his
- 8:07Speaker 2: administration believed that the American people are like kittens that
- 8:12Speaker 2: are very easily distracted by something furry and shiny.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Right? So let me throw glitter at them so they
- 8:19Speaker 2: could look at that. Or like, remember that dog from
- 8:21Speaker 2: the Up movie? He's a squirrel. Like, that's what I
- 8:24Speaker 2: feel like he thinks that we are.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yes. And it is working to some extent.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I find it so insulting.
- 8:31Speaker 1: It's insane. It's truly unhinged. And I think that, like,
- 8:35Speaker 1: just renaming shit why though? It would be. And so
- 8:39Speaker 1: that's the other thing is that like, okay. So to
- 8:42Speaker 1: rename something, right? Why there, it actually doesn't make any difference.
- 8:45Speaker 1: It is stupid. It's like sort of a, a PR stunt, right?
- 8:50Speaker 1: If he actually had an agenda and if MAGA and
- 8:53Speaker 1: the Republican party and the GOP were all aligned on
- 8:56Speaker 1: something and they could get Congress to move, right. They
- 9:00Speaker 1: still have the house. They still have Senate. Uh, they're
- 9:03Speaker 1: not aligned on anything. They can't get anything through. They
- 9:06Speaker 1: don't want to get anything through before the midterms. Then
- 9:10Speaker 1: they wouldn't have to be doing all these meaningless stunts, right?
- 9:14Speaker 1: Because they would be moving forward.
- 9:15Speaker 2: You know what it's like? I think the last time,
- 9:19Speaker 2: I think we were speaking to Suzanne Lambert. I think
- 9:24Speaker 2: it was her. And She was saying how these people
- 9:27Speaker 2: who are already in a place of privilege, you're already ahead, right?
- 9:32Speaker 2: Ahead of the game.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And you still suck.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And you still suck.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Well, white privilege is difficult to admit to when you've
- 9:39Speaker 3: amounted to nothing despite it. Right?
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's so true.
- 9:44Speaker 2: So the president, in theory, I feel like any president
- 9:48Speaker 2: of any given party would want to be in this position, right?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Where all the... everything is sort of aligned in your favor, right?
- 9:56Speaker 2: You have the Congress, you have it. But you're still
- 10:00Speaker 2: not able to do anything.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Gas prices went up. Nobody can afford groceries. The groceries
- 10:05Speaker 1: we are buying, they're filled with glass, lead, and possum ankles.
- 10:08Speaker 3: You can't eat anything.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Is what we're eating. We're not eating steak. We're eating
- 10:13Speaker 1: Walrus meat. I'm sorry. Those are possum ankles. I ate
- 10:17Speaker 1: that Argentinian beef and I can't turn my head to
- 10:19Speaker 1: the left now. I don't know what's going on in there,
- 10:22Speaker 1: but you've got the House, you've got the Senate, you've
- 10:24Speaker 1: got the President, you've got everything, and your shitty little
- 10:26Speaker 1: kid is still living in your basement because they can't
- 10:29Speaker 1: afford a house. So what's the tea, baby? At what
- 10:33Speaker 1: point do you start voting different?
- 10:34Speaker 2: And so, again, I always wonder What's going on? What's
- 10:40Speaker 2: going on in the home? What's going on in the home, right?
- 10:43Speaker 1: Just throw up a graphic, CJ. What's going on in
- 10:45Speaker 1: the home?
- 10:45Speaker 2: What's going on in the home? What's going on in
- 10:47Speaker 2: the house, right? What's going on in the house? Are
- 10:49Speaker 2: the people all whispering to each other?
- 10:52Speaker 1: Like, what the fuck is going on?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Did you hear what he said?
- 10:56Speaker 4: What do we do?
- 10:56Speaker 2: What do we do?
- 10:57Speaker 1: Mag is turning on him as of this morning. So
- 11:00Speaker 1: this is, well, not as of this morning. They've done
- 11:02Speaker 1: been turning on him.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But Trump went on Truth Social and was like, America,
- 11:07Speaker 1: we have to get behind data centers. Data centers are
- 11:09Speaker 1: the future. We must accept them all because no one
- 11:12Speaker 1: wants a data center in their backyard.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Right. Because it sucks up all the resources.
- 11:17Speaker 1: It sucks up all the resources. Indiana still doesn't have electricity.
- 11:19Speaker 1: It's been almost three weeks. They've got a data center
- 11:22Speaker 1: right there. They build them right near, like very in
- 11:25Speaker 1: close proximity to underserved communities, predominantly black and brown.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Sure, sure, sure.
- 11:30Speaker 1: They screw up the power grid. They screw up the
- 11:31Speaker 1: water supply. Like, it's not good. Right. And Trump posted
- 11:36Speaker 1: on Truth Social and was like, y'all, get behind. I
- 11:40Speaker 1: don't know why I said y'all.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Yeah, but go ahead.
- 11:42Speaker 1: You know what? I'm allowed.
- 11:43Speaker 2: You are.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I can do a y'all every now and then. It's
- 11:45Speaker 1: gender neutral. Y'all, get behind data centers. We love them.
- 11:50Speaker 1: If we want to be Americans, we've got to love
- 11:53Speaker 1: data centers. Otherwise, we're going to be poor, is what
- 11:55Speaker 1: he said. Yo, the way MAGA snatched that fake tan,
- 12:00Speaker 1: they slapped the fake tan off his face, snatched that
- 12:03Speaker 1: little wig. They freaked out on him on Truth Social,
- 12:08Speaker 1: his own platform.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Did he cry about it?
- 12:11Speaker 1: Sorry, one sec.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You all right? What do you got? You got something?
- 12:15Speaker 1: No, I just ate that cookie. It's not contagious.
- 12:19Speaker 2: It's carbs. Michael had a cookie. Oh, my God.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I had a cookie before I came in here, and
- 12:25Speaker 1: I said– Magnanimously. I said, Melissa, would you like to
- 12:28Speaker 1: share this cookie with me?
- 12:29Speaker 2: And I said, yes, thank you very much.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Then Melissa looked at me. We're chatting. Wait, go ahead.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We're chatting. And Melissa just says.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I took a bite of the cookie.
- 12:38Speaker 1: We're chatting. She took a bite. She says, this cookie
- 12:41Speaker 1: was near a banana. It was. Those of you avid
- 12:44Speaker 1: listeners know Melissa hates bananas.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I don't like bananas.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You can't eat a banana in the room with her.
- 12:49Speaker 2: You cannot. I would prefer that you did not.
- 12:51Speaker 1: It'll be fisticuffs.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Well, I'll be very unhappy with you.
- 12:54Speaker 1: You know the first 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan?
- 12:57Speaker 1: That's what it's going to be like.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I cannot stand you.
- 13:01Speaker 1: That's what it's going to be like if you eat
- 13:02Speaker 1: a banana with her.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But yeah, and so I'll never forget. She's up with
- 13:06Speaker 2: this cookie. Yeah, Michael and I have a mutual friend.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Who is it? We'll bleep it out. Jones. Who? Jonesy. Oh.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And so actually leave it in.
- 13:19Speaker 1: She'll get a kick out of it. It's like who?
- 13:23Speaker 2: And I was like hungry. And I was just like, hey,
- 13:26Speaker 2: do you have like a snack? And she was like, sure.
- 13:28Speaker 1: A lovely, generous gesture.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Right. I asked for a snack. No, no, no, no.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I asked for a snack and she provided me with
- 13:36Speaker 2: some popcorn. So I take some popcorn. I put it
- 13:39Speaker 2: in my mouth. And I was like, is there a
- 13:41Speaker 2: banana in your bag? And she was like, yes. I
- 13:44Speaker 2: was like, you can take that back because I can
- 13:46Speaker 2: taste it.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
- 13:48Speaker 2: The eau de banana went into the bag of popcorn.
- 13:53Speaker 1: It's been recalled by Melissa only, she said.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I'll never forget. You know what else I don't like?
- 13:57Speaker 2: I don't like hazelnuts. And I, that's why, remember I
- 14:00Speaker 2: don't like Nutella? You know that.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I do know that. It is like your one character flaw.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I mean, I've got many character flaws. According to the reviews,
- 14:09Speaker 2: I've got lots of character flaws.
- 14:10Speaker 1: According to the reviews, we have to finish a fucking story.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Because the banana cookie, Melissa rejected. She said it was
- 14:15Speaker 1: near a banana. I don't have a banana on my person.
- 14:17Speaker 2: There was a banana near it.
- 14:19Speaker 1: And then I remembered, in the case of pastries, there
- 14:23Speaker 1: was banana bread offered. And she knew. Like a truffle pig.
- 14:28Speaker 1: You can sniff it out.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Are you calling me a pig?
- 14:31Speaker 1: Like those Jack Russell Terriers. Or a dog? That find the... Well,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I don't know what... Yeah. Yeah, you just stuck at home. Yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I am. Yeah.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I think when you don't like something, you can really
- 14:44Speaker 2: suss it out.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Go ahead. I got that cookie and then I was
- 14:46Speaker 1: biking to the studio. But I had a very important
- 14:49Speaker 1: legal call.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Very important lawyer thing's happening. And it's going to start raining.
- 14:54Speaker 1: So I started... I was like, let me just get
- 14:56Speaker 1: to the studio before it starts shitting down rain. Right.
- 14:58Speaker 1: So it's not wet, brief recess. After dark, I'm drenched and...
- 15:03Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 15:03Speaker 2: That's another show.
- 15:04Speaker 1: A sultry like cologne advertisement. And of course the legal
- 15:10Speaker 1: call happens like right when I'm at a stoplight. So
- 15:12Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, cool. Let me pull over to like
- 15:16Speaker 1: a side street in Chelsea. So that way it's like
- 15:21Speaker 1: a little bit more quiet. People think I'm buttoned up.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It's like petticoats. Like people think it's a little bit
- 15:27Speaker 1: more formal. They don't hear the ambulance go by. So
- 15:32Speaker 1: I was biking up 6th Avenue. So I pull over
- 15:34Speaker 1: a quiet, beautiful side street in Chelsea. I get on
- 15:38Speaker 1: the phone call. We're talking. It's like a group. This
- 15:42Speaker 1: woman comes out of the building and starts screaming into
- 15:48Speaker 1: the phone, how dare you sleep with my brother? No.
- 15:53Speaker 2: No.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Like right behind me.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Speaking into her phone.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Her phone. She starts screaming. Screaming. It was like the
- 16:02Speaker 1: bone collector. Why do you care who's sleeping with your brother?
- 16:04Speaker 1: That's weird. I think it was her partner.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Oh. Screaming.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Crying like big elephant tears. Alligator tears. Not elephant tears.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Alligator tears. Crocodile tears.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Crocodile tears.
- 16:22Speaker 1: We went through the full mudang. Every animal cracker we
- 16:29Speaker 1: went through. Crying, screaming. I'm like, excuse me one moment.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I'm like trying to book it down the street with
- 16:36Speaker 1: my bike to get away from this woman who's clearly
- 16:39Speaker 1: going through.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Sure, she's having a crisis.
- 16:41Speaker 1: If your partner slept with your brother... Type it in
- 16:43Speaker 1: the comments. Right. And we want to hear about it.
- 16:45Speaker 1: If you are her, if she is you, if you're
- 16:48Speaker 1: every woman.
- 16:49Speaker 2: It's all on you.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Let us know.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Let us know.
- 16:52Speaker 1: We want to hear.
- 16:52Speaker 2: We do.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Because I wanted to, that was the call I actually
- 16:56Speaker 1: wanted to be on, not my call. And it was,
- 16:59Speaker 1: it was bad. She's crying. It was, the voice was
- 17:01Speaker 1: so cacophonous. It was very like. Sing-songy Fraulein Maria, but
- 17:08Speaker 1: also crying.
- 17:09Speaker 2: But could you hear the pain in the voice?
- 17:12Speaker 1: We were kind of close to Broadway. I feel like
- 17:14Speaker 1: she could have been an understudy for someone.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Speaking of understudies, I see what you did there, by
- 17:20Speaker 2: the way.
- 17:22Speaker 1: What? Me? We've got someone in the studio?
- 17:27Speaker 2: Today we have.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Everyone's favorite O'Mary performer. swing, understudy. She goes on for
- 17:35Speaker 1: Mary all the time. Hannah Solos in the studio.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's going to be fun to talk to her.
- 17:41Speaker 1: That girl must live in Times Square. She must live
- 17:43Speaker 1: in Midtown. That poor thing.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I'm sorry to hear that.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Seven days, eight days a week. She's here. Because we
- 17:51Speaker 1: record on a Monday. I said, can you please come
- 17:53Speaker 1: to Midtown on a Monday? I know it's your day off,
- 17:54Speaker 1: but she did it.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, she did.
- 17:56Speaker 1: She did.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Nice.
- 17:57Speaker 1: So we're so excited to have her.
- 17:59Speaker 2: That's going to be a fun chat. Oh, yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 1: We're going to chat with her. Anything else you want
- 18:02Speaker 1: to talk about in algorithm? What was on your algorithm
- 18:04Speaker 1: before we get into- What was in my algorithm? Hannah. Oh,
- 18:07Speaker 1: this guy was following me home the other night. Why? Well, okay.
- 18:12Speaker 1: So I was away in like a small little beach
- 18:15Speaker 1: town on vacation and I was- Where were you? This
- 18:20Speaker 1: was out on the North Fork. Okay. And so I
- 18:23Speaker 1: was walking home from the bars, which closed like kind
- 18:25Speaker 1: of early, but it was late enough where the only
- 18:28Speaker 1: person who was awake was Alyssa. Sure. And I was walking,
- 18:32Speaker 1: I went alone. I don't know, something about being like
- 18:34Speaker 1: a small town spooky setting. I get a little– I'd
- 18:38Speaker 1: rather walk home in the middle of Brooklyn, in the
- 18:41Speaker 1: middle of Manhattan at 2, 3 in the morning alone
- 18:44Speaker 1: than on a street where there's nobody.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah, when there's nobody, that's when there's like a weird somebody.
- 18:49Speaker 1: If Jack the Ripper shows up.
- 18:52Speaker 2: That's it.
- 18:53Speaker 1: In the East Village, you scream once. 50 people are like, huh?
- 18:57Speaker 1: What's going on? But in a small town like that.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 19:00Speaker 1: No one can hear your screams. So I started walking
- 19:04Speaker 1: home and there was a weird guy. And I was like, oh,
- 19:08Speaker 1: the killer.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Weird in what way?
- 19:10Speaker 1: The Wendy Williams, the killer. He was just shifty. And
- 19:15Speaker 1: he was kind of like walking in the general direction
- 19:17Speaker 1: I was going in to get back to my house.
- 19:21Speaker 1: But like far enough away where I knew he was there,
- 19:24Speaker 1: but not close enough where I was like, this person's
- 19:26Speaker 1: going to jump me. So I was like, Okay, do what?
- 19:29Speaker 1: I don't know if this is what you're supposed to do.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I called Alyssa. I called her friend because I was like,
- 19:35Speaker 1: this is the only person who's awake.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yeah, don't call me.
- 19:38Speaker 1: So I called Alyssa and I was like, this is
- 19:39Speaker 1: where I am. This is what's going on. This is
- 19:42Speaker 1: where I am. And like, this is where I'm heading home.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Will you stay on the phone with me? Alyssa, she's
- 19:48Speaker 1: going to kill me. She goes... I got you. It's
- 19:50Speaker 1: going to be totally fine.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 19:53Speaker 1: It was two or three in the morning. She's lit.
- 19:55Speaker 1: she turned in the party herself. So I was like,
- 19:58Speaker 1: oh no. So I'm like, okay, between the two of us,
- 20:02Speaker 1: we've got one brain cell trying to get me home.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I need people to understand how often I worry about
- 20:14Speaker 2: either Michael or Alyssa or Michael and Alyssa together. Like
- 20:18Speaker 2: there's always, there's always a moment. Like sometimes I'll be
- 20:22Speaker 2: texting with you guys or I'll get off the phone
- 20:24Speaker 2: with Michael and I'll like, Start talking to myself. And
- 20:27Speaker 2: now I'm just like, what's the matter? And I'm just like,
- 20:30Speaker 2: fucking Michael and Alyssa.
- 20:31Speaker 1: The best part was she was so committed to taking
- 20:34Speaker 1: care of me in this moment. She was like, we're
- 20:37Speaker 1: on this. Like, it was us. It was Sergeant Summers.
- 20:41Speaker 1: It was us. It was G.I. Jane. She shaved her head.
- 20:45Speaker 1: She was like, I'm fully committed. Like, we are together.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I'm here for you. You're here for me. Okay. And
- 20:52Speaker 1: she was like, okay, where are you? And, like, I
- 20:54Speaker 1: can hear her getting out the notes app. Like, she's, like,
- 20:57Speaker 1: getting ready for the full investigation. She's ready and available. Okay.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I mean, that's what I'm saying. She's such a good friend.
- 21:06Speaker 2: She really is, like, the best.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And so, eventually, like, I'm kind of getting home. She's like,
- 21:10Speaker 1: are you home yet? What street are you on now?
- 21:12Speaker 1: And I'm like, all right. So, I was near a hospital.
- 21:14Speaker 1: And the guy was still following me. Like, he kind
- 21:16Speaker 1: of followed me.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Was he following you or was he walking behind you?
- 21:19Speaker 1: So, like, that's where, like, I become the unreliable narrator. Okay.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Because there were– I was drinking. So, I'm not totally
- 21:28Speaker 1: sure if I was being followed. It's possible– I was
- 21:32Speaker 1: just sharing the sidewalk with someone. And there was somebody
- 21:35Speaker 1: just walking? It's possible it's just a pedestrian. Just a walker.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Someone who wanted to save on gas money. And I'm like, okay,
- 21:44Speaker 1: so he is the killer. And he is wearing a
- 21:47Speaker 1: mask made of human flesh. And Alyssa's like, okay, I've
- 21:50Speaker 1: got you covered, babe.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And he's walking with a dagger in his hand.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Let's get the light out.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So I'm like, okay, the lights of the hospital are
- 21:57Speaker 1: guiding me. She's like, I can hear her computer keys.
- 21:59Speaker 1: She's looking up where the hospital is. To triangulate the coordinates.
- 22:04Speaker 2: What's really funny is that you guys track each other, right?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Like you track each other on whatever.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Find my friends.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Find my friends. I track them. No one tracks me,
- 22:16Speaker 2: but I track them so that if. You really want
- 22:21Speaker 2: to know what's going on. All you have to do is, like,
- 22:24Speaker 2: look at your phone.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm like, Alyssa, there's a tree to the left of
- 22:26Speaker 1: the hospital. That's where I am. She's like, okay, I've
- 22:28Speaker 1: got it on Google Maps. It's up to me. Well,
- 22:30Speaker 1: she really could have been looking at it just to
- 22:32Speaker 1: find mine and see exactly where I was.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Because sometimes I look– if you're late for something and
- 22:38Speaker 2: I'm waiting for you, I can tell, like– You track me?
- 22:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:42Speaker 2: You gave– I can't remember why, but we all decided
- 22:45Speaker 2: to track each other.
- 22:46Speaker 1: It was years ago.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. And then– I don't like being tracked,
- 22:51Speaker 2: so I stopped it. But you guys are still.
- 22:53Speaker 1: You keep on keeping on. Yeah. Yeah. Keep an eye
- 22:56Speaker 1: on me.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I'm usually home.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Okay. I will say, this man, once I got to
- 23:00Speaker 1: the hospital, he did... He went in a different direction.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:04Speaker 1: He was scared of that copay. He said... Aren't we all?
- 23:07Speaker 2: No.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So he scrammed. He hit the bricks. And so I
- 23:11Speaker 1: took the heel-toe express. I kept stepping. And I got...
- 23:14Speaker 1: I live... The house is... My house is near the hospital.
- 23:18Speaker 1: So I sort of... Went home from there. And once
- 23:21Speaker 1: I got home, Melissa was like, okay, you're home. You're good.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Lock the door. Yeah. She knows. Nothing gets past Melissa
- 23:29Speaker 1: and Michael at 3 in the morning. Except a bad
- 23:33Speaker 1: Uber rating.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Oh, did you ever get your Uber rating fixed?
- 23:37Speaker 1: No, I don't think you can fix an Uber rating.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Can you? Comment below if you can fix an Uber rating.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I don't know. It's on Lyft. I don't use Uber.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Lyft, whatever.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Lyft, yeah. Okay, we'll be right back with Hannah Solo.
- 23:47Speaker 1: We're going to talk about Oh Mary. And I think
- 23:51Speaker 1: all the foibles of being a Broadway star.
- 23:55Speaker 2: In the understudy.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Did I use the word foibles right? We'll find out
- 23:58Speaker 1: right after this break. Because my friend went and saw,
- 24:05Speaker 1: do you remember that show? I know Melissa is interested
- 24:08Speaker 1: in the Hasidic Jewish community, but that movie Disobedience with Rick.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I'm constantly bringing this up.
- 24:17Speaker 1: You're constantly bringing up disobedience?
- 24:18Speaker 3: Because they spit in each other's mouths.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yes!
- 24:22Speaker 1: Oh, my God!
- 24:22Speaker 3: Yes!
- 24:23Speaker 1: My friend was like, I'm going to see it with
- 24:25Speaker 1: my mother and grandmother. This was when it was in theaters.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 1: And she was like, is it something I should see
- 24:30Speaker 1: with my mother and grandmother? And I was like, so
- 24:33Speaker 1: they are having full lesbian intercourse and spitting in each
- 24:37Speaker 1: other's mouths. And she just wrote, excuse me.
- 24:40Speaker 3: That was not in the trailer. I was like, yeah.
- 24:43Speaker 1: No, they didn't. They pulled that from the trailer.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And now I'm thinking about it. So the movie had
- 24:49Speaker 3: a lasting impression on us all.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:51Speaker 1: We're going to take a break so we can all
- 24:53Speaker 1: think about it. No, no, no.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Because, right?
- 24:55Speaker 2: Like it's one of those things you remember it. And
- 24:58Speaker 2: then my parents saw it and my dad was like,
- 25:03Speaker 2: and my dad, you know, my mom, my mother would
- 25:06Speaker 2: take my father to do things and he was sort
- 25:08Speaker 2: of like, you know, like a dad. Like, all right,
- 25:10Speaker 2: I guess I'm going to go do this thing. And
- 25:12Speaker 2: I had already seen it. And I was like, did
- 25:14Speaker 2: you like it? And my dad was like, I don't understand.
- 25:18Speaker 2: And then my mom was like, my parents are from Haiti.
- 25:24Speaker 2: So is that nice, miss? Is that nice?
- 25:27Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't, for some people.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Sure. Yeah.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I was like for some people, but I remember when
- 25:33Speaker 2: we were talking to my mom about water sports, that
- 25:36Speaker 2: was a whole other.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Thumbs up or thumbs down.
- 25:39Speaker 2: So during the trial, it came out that he was
- 25:43Speaker 2: into water sports. And for my.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Mom, That was the conviction.
- 25:46Speaker 2: That was the crime.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Convictable offense was just urine.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And I was like, some people like that. And she
- 25:54Speaker 2: was like, no, Melissa.
- 25:55Speaker 1: That's not right.
- 25:56Speaker 2: No.
- 25:57Speaker 1: That is not only a crime in her mother's mind,
- 25:59Speaker 1: but also immediate jail. Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Immediate.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Immediate.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Send away.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Nothing else. Yeah. So the whole trial, when it was
- 26:05Speaker 1: going on, she was like, well- The water sports is
- 26:08Speaker 1: really what we're on trial here for.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Hey, I love your mom. Bring her in here.
- 26:13Speaker 1: This is what I worry about, though, when it comes
- 26:15Speaker 1: when we've got a kink movie like Pillion or we've
- 26:17Speaker 1: got something like Disobedience. People will see it and they'll
- 26:20Speaker 1: think that's what it is, being gay. They're like, oh,
- 26:24Speaker 1: the Pillion, the table. Yeah, that's what it is. Anyway,
- 26:30Speaker 1: speaking of being gay and spitting on people, we're so
- 26:33Speaker 1: excited to have Hannah Solo here in the studio. Hannah's
- 26:36Speaker 1: written some hilarious articles. That's not your bio, sorry.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I was like, tell me more because I have, I guess.
- 26:46Speaker 1: CJ wrote this rundown.
- 26:48Speaker 3: What did I write articles for?
- 26:51Speaker 1: It's his note to me of like, Michael, be sure
- 26:54Speaker 1: to read these articles before the recording.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I'm a writer for the New York Times.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Hannah Solo is a New York City-based actor, singer, and writer.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You may have seen her at UCB Jazz at Lincoln
- 27:08Speaker 1: Center or performing as Gertie Cummings in Oklahoma. She's currently
- 27:12Speaker 1: understudied at Mary Todd Lincoln and Mary Chaperone slash Bill
- 27:16Speaker 1: and O'Mary on Broadway now through January when her contract renews.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Follow her on Instagram at Baby Magoo and welcome everyone.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Please welcome Hannah. How did I do, CJ?
- 27:31Speaker 3: That was so good.
- 27:32Speaker 1: That was my first intro. What? Ever? I've been doing
- 27:35Speaker 1: this for a year.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Are you sure?
- 27:37Speaker 1: No.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Michael lies constantly.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I do.
- 27:42Speaker 2: You can't believe most of what he says.
- 27:45Speaker 3: This is helpful. This is a good warning for the
- 27:47Speaker 3: rest of the time together.
- 27:48Speaker 1: For sure.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Just look at me and I'll be like... Okay, thank you.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I feel so comfortable, open, open.
- 27:56Speaker 3: I want to hear all about it.
- 27:57Speaker 1: You're like, wow, I really am a writer for the
- 27:59Speaker 1: New York Times. I didn't even realize I wrote those articles.
- 28:02Speaker 3: It's huge for me.
- 28:03Speaker 1: How has it been being in every iteration of O'Mary,
- 28:08Speaker 1: of understudying all these incredible actors, being extraordinary yourself? Tell
- 28:14Speaker 1: us about it.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I was just reading a journal that I found in
- 28:18Speaker 3: my dressing room recently. from the beginning of our Broadway run.
- 28:22Speaker 3: And truly in the journal, it says like, well, it's
- 28:26Speaker 3: only going to be a short limited run. So I
- 28:28Speaker 3: really need to make the most of it and enjoy
- 28:30Speaker 3: myself because then I'll be going back to my day job.
- 28:34Speaker 3: And when we first started, I was still working my
- 28:37Speaker 3: day job, which was like- data entry for a functional
- 28:39Speaker 3: medicine company, literally doing this backstage, entering private medical data, sorry,
- 28:46Speaker 3: on my own computer.
- 28:47Speaker 1: If your medical data was stolen, please contact me. Leave
- 28:52Speaker 1: brief recess and exactly right out of it, please. Wow.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 3: So I thought it was going to be such a
- 28:58Speaker 3: short run. And here we are two years later.
- 29:01Speaker 1: So super short. Super short.
- 29:03Speaker 3: We've almost done a thousand performances.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Wow. And I see– so I follow some of the
- 29:08Speaker 1: Broadway TikTok divas and they talk about the ticket sales
- 29:12Speaker 1: of shows and what does well and what doesn't. And
- 29:15Speaker 1: O'Mary is always every week nailing it. It's incredible.
- 29:20Speaker 2: What do you think– so– Couple things. So first, for
- 29:23Speaker 2: people who don't know what the show is about, what
- 29:25Speaker 2: is the show about?
- 29:26Speaker 3: The show is about Mary Todd Lincoln, our former first
- 29:30Speaker 3: lady married to Abraham Lincoln, and sort of what if
- 29:34Speaker 3: she had dreams of being a cabaret star? Written.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And mary todd was originated by cola scola yes uh.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Our lord and savior yes.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Exactly yeah father son exactly okay so not to center
- 29:51Speaker 1: the conversation around me and my experience.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Please do but as egomania Ego mania.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Okay. So I bought the tickets on my phone right
- 30:03Speaker 1: when it opened at the Lortel. So this is a
- 30:05Speaker 1: couple of years ago. And it was, I saw you
- 30:07Speaker 1: were in it and I was like, boots the house down, T, click, click, tap, tap,
- 30:11Speaker 1: take out. And I just, the tickets were like $ 30.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Like when before and even when entered previews. So this
- 30:18Speaker 1: was like T. This was First Testament. Oh, Mary. So
- 30:22Speaker 1: this was back in the day.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 30:24Speaker 1: This was way back. And I had seen a lot
- 30:27Speaker 1: of Cole's shows. So I had seen him at the public.
- 30:30Speaker 1: So I was like, I know it's going to be
- 30:32Speaker 1: a little hilarious nightmare of a show. So bought the tickets.
- 30:37Speaker 1: This is where I have to be like brutally honest
- 30:39Speaker 1: as a viewer and patron of the arts.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I'm actually scared.
- 30:43Speaker 1: It's the night of. And it's maybe you guys, I
- 30:46Speaker 1: think you just finished previews.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Okay.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I maybe don't have my finger on the pulse of
- 30:50Speaker 1: what's happening culturally in New York. And I was really tired.
- 30:54Speaker 1: So I did turn to my husband and I said,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I maybe don't want to go tonight and maybe we
- 30:58Speaker 1: should get this up, these tickets away. And he was like, no,
- 31:02Speaker 1: let's just go. So I was like, all right, fine.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So we hop on those city bikes. This was before
- 31:06Speaker 1: the new law. Mayor Mamdani, where they lowered the speed
- 31:09Speaker 1: of the city bikes. So these city bikes go about 80,
- 31:12Speaker 1: 90 miles per hour. You can really get some height.
- 31:14Speaker 3: You can really get going.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You can really zoom suit off of a curb and
- 31:18Speaker 1: go flying. And so we get to the theater in
- 31:21Speaker 1: maybe 60 seconds, right? So it was sort of like
- 31:25Speaker 1: we talked about Bedknobs and Broomsticks on a different episode.
- 31:27Speaker 1: It was kind of like that.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Hold on a minute. Do you remember that too? Bedknobs
- 31:32Speaker 2: and broomsticks?
- 31:32Speaker 3: You know, I do feel like this is a cultural
- 31:35Speaker 3: touchstone that I remember it being a thing, but I
- 31:38Speaker 3: have no recollection of it.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Okay, so I- Where are you from?
- 31:40Speaker 3: California.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I also have no recollection of this.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Okay. And it is allegedly- Angela Lansbury.
- 31:46Speaker 2: In my, like apparently Gen X, which I am a
- 31:50Speaker 2: part of Gen X, were really into it. I have
- 31:53Speaker 2: never seen this show, never heard about it ever in
- 31:57Speaker 2: my life.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Cartoon?
- 31:59Speaker 1: It's a flying bed with Angela Lansbury from the 90s.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Is it a cartoon? No.
- 32:04Speaker 2: It's live action, right?
- 32:05Speaker 3: There's a song from it.
- 32:07Speaker 2: CJ?
- 32:08Speaker 1: 1971. Right. So it's not the 90s. It's the ghost
- 32:11Speaker 1: of Mary.
- 32:12Speaker 2: So 1971. I was born in 1972. And I have
- 32:16Speaker 2: no recollection of this at all. I never saw it.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I had never heard of it.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Gay children of the 80s and 90s get in the
- 32:23Speaker 1: comments because anyway, we get to the theater and I'm like, Again,
- 32:28Speaker 1: we're expecting like Little Joe's Pub.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Sure.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Like, no, this had not been a thing yet. We
- 32:35Speaker 1: get there. Those tickets I bought were front row center.
- 32:40Speaker 1: So we are inches from the stage. The Lortel is tiny. Tiny.
- 32:45Speaker 1: From row center, sitting next to, who's the Kate from
- 32:50Speaker 1: Dawson's Creek? Kate Lewis Hudson, not Hudson. Hudson.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Katie Holmes?
- 32:55Speaker 1: Katie Holmes. Sitting next to Katie Holmes. We're like flanked
- 33:00Speaker 1: by Katie Holmes and the Project Runway guy. Michael Kors.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Oh, that guy.
- 33:07Speaker 1: So I'm like.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I was hoping it was Tim Dunn.
- 33:09Speaker 1: But whatever. Brad's like, and we get there. The curtain's
- 33:13Speaker 1: coming up. And we're walking in the theater and the
- 33:15Speaker 1: person on the radio is like, where's seat 1A and 1B?
- 33:20Speaker 1: They're empty and front row center empty. at sold out O'Mary.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And I grabbed the guy and I go, that's us.
- 33:28Speaker 1: And he takes us right to the front.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 33:30Speaker 1: It was bad. It was really, they were like calling
- 33:32Speaker 1: us over the loudspeaker along with the cast. It was bad.
- 33:36Speaker 3: But you made it.
- 33:38Speaker 1: We made it. And it really was, those of you,
- 33:41Speaker 1: millions of people have seen O'Mary at this point. I
- 33:43Speaker 1: feel like no spoilers. Cole was... Within kissing distance in
- 33:49Speaker 1: that last scene, he's sitting right at the stage edge.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, of course.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Singing to the audience. And it was a little too
- 33:58Speaker 1: close for comfort, one might even say.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 34:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just like a cabaret singer this close.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Oh, I don't like that either.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Are you not audience participation forward?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Ryan Safi show.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Too scary for you.
- 34:13Speaker 2: I get really uncomfortable. But I mean, but I'm not
- 34:17Speaker 2: like a dick about it. Do you know what I mean? No,
- 34:20Speaker 2: of course. Well, I mean, some people can be.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Sure.
- 34:24Speaker 2: So, I mean, I will. I'm not going to ruin
- 34:26Speaker 2: anything for anybody. But I get very nervous and anxious.
- 34:30Speaker 2: And I also don't like people very much. Do you
- 34:34Speaker 2: know what I mean? Like in big groups, right? I
- 34:36Speaker 2: am much better one-on-one or in a small group. So,
- 34:41Speaker 2: if I'm in a theater where there's audience participation... That
- 34:46Speaker 2: gives me a lot of anxiety. It's not about them
- 34:49Speaker 2: or what they're doing. It's me. Yes. You know what
- 34:51Speaker 2: I mean?
- 34:51Speaker 1: 100%.
- 34:52Speaker 2: So I will because I don't want to ruin it,
- 34:54Speaker 2: but I don't really want to.
- 34:56Speaker 3: I don't want to either, to be honest.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Really? Yeah, I was going to ask you about that.
- 35:01Speaker 3: I just want to sit down. And also I feel
- 35:05Speaker 3: like there's a bit of pressure to perform. And I'm like,
- 35:08Speaker 3: but I'm not a performer in this moment. And I
- 35:11Speaker 3: also don't ever want to distract from the show itself.
- 35:13Speaker 3: So it's like, I don't want to be the one
- 35:15Speaker 3: that's trying to be funny. I'm not here to do that.
- 35:18Speaker 3: I want you to do your thing.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Right. And people rarely book you because you're subtle. Exactly.
- 35:23Speaker 1: No one's like booking the quiet, stoic performance of Hannah Sobel.
- 35:27Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no. Everyone's like, ow, ow, ow,
- 35:30Speaker 3: too loud. Turn it down.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Gertie.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Oklahoma is not really nobody. You've got an inimitable cackle
- 35:40Speaker 1: in that show.
- 35:41Speaker 3: There is some review from some Broadway World writer across
- 35:46Speaker 3: America that was like, Hannah Solo did a great job of–
- 35:51Speaker 3: Making the audience want her to leave the stage.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. In the best way possible.
- 35:58Speaker 3: A hundred percent. We print it out. We put it
- 36:00Speaker 3: on the wall. I said, this is why I do it.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Speaking of, like, audience participation, you've been in this show
- 36:10Speaker 1: a lot.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Is there anything that happens in the audience that you've
- 36:15Speaker 1: witnessed where you're, like, bad behavior?
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Lauren Boebert's in the front row, anything like that.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I wish. Just jacking someone off in the front row.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Speaking of disobedience. Speaking of disobedience.
- 36:27Speaker 3: Two lesbians spitting in each other's mouth. No, but I
- 36:32Speaker 3: do wish, well, maybe, who knows? I feel like people
- 36:35Speaker 3: have a few drinks in them on a Saturday night.
- 36:38Speaker 3: And that's when we're not actually asking for audience participation.
- 36:42Speaker 3: But you get it. We're getting it. And then it's
- 36:45Speaker 3: sort of this weird, like, It's sort of sweet, but misguided,
- 36:49Speaker 3: where people are like, come on, Mary, you go, girl!
- 36:52Speaker 3: They're in support.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 36:55Speaker 3: But it's like, thank you, keep that inside.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Well, I met you at the opening of Rocky Horror,
- 37:01Speaker 1: which famously has a lot of... that sometimes they were
- 37:07Speaker 1: really trying to not have happen in that show.
- 37:10Speaker 3: And they went through so many previews, like testing it out,
- 37:13Speaker 3: trying to figure out what the balance was.
- 37:16Speaker 2: I mean, I just, I wonder about that though. Cause
- 37:18Speaker 2: I remember when Michael went to go see it, I
- 37:20Speaker 2: was just like, well, what about the audience part? Because
- 37:22Speaker 2: that's what the Rocky Horror Picture Show, when you go
- 37:25Speaker 2: to the movies, that's a part of the fun, right?
- 37:28Speaker 2: So is it realistic to expect that Even though it's
- 37:33Speaker 2: a Broadway show, that people who are nostalgic for the
- 37:36Speaker 2: movie won't scream out to Janet or whatever. Do you
- 37:41Speaker 2: know what I mean? But Michael said people were sort
- 37:43Speaker 2: of civilized about it.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Except for Susan Sarandon. You saw her at that opening. Yes,
- 37:49Speaker 1: of course.
- 37:49Speaker 3: She's sitting in front of me.
- 37:50Speaker 1: They had her on wires. They pulled, they pulled, they yanked,
- 37:53Speaker 1: and she went out of her seat. She did the pink.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:57Speaker 3: She did the pink. She did the pink.
- 37:58Speaker 1: And the Fergie. She said, get down.
- 38:00Speaker 3: You know that? You know what I'm talking about?
- 38:02Speaker 1: The one-handed.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Carl.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Speaking of vocal stims, you've got a lot of vocal
- 38:08Speaker 1: stims in your repertoire.
- 38:09Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
- 38:11Speaker 1: This is our digital camera right here. This is where
- 38:14Speaker 1: I hit them with the diva if you want to
- 38:15Speaker 1: hit them with your boob.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Hit them with the diva. Well, yes, somehow I accidentally
- 38:21Speaker 3: created a vocal stim.
- 38:22Speaker 1: For the massive.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Truly accidentally.
- 38:25Speaker 1: No, mine have all been accidental.
- 38:26Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the thing. If you plan it, it's not
- 38:28Speaker 3: going to happen. Right. No, it needs to be, yeah.
- 38:31Speaker 2: It has to be random.
- 38:32Speaker 3: It needs to be organic.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Show Me Your Bad Dog, I was on the toilet
- 38:35Speaker 1: when I filmed that. No one knows that. That video was,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I was on the toilet. And I thought I saved
- 38:40Speaker 1: it to drafts, but I accidentally posted it. And then
- 38:42Speaker 1: it became the Show Me Your Bad Dog. I don't
- 38:44Speaker 1: want to see any of these good boys. It was
- 38:46Speaker 1: a draft that I accidentally posted.
- 38:47Speaker 3: You were on the toilet.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Yes.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Can you see the toilet?
- 38:49Speaker 1: No, it's just my face like this.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Well, because Michael... All his videos are like really close
- 38:55Speaker 2: up to his face. My aunt asked why he does that.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Why are you doing that? She's like, you're a friend.
- 39:02Speaker 2: I love that.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Why? Why are you doing that? Why is he doing that?
- 39:06Speaker 1: But yeah, so you can see Boop. Well, not anymore
- 39:09Speaker 1: at Closed, right?
- 39:10Speaker 3: It's on tour. Look at me, advertising for Boop.
- 39:13Speaker 1: The rock show.
- 39:13Speaker 3: I'm their press person.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I'm dead. Anyway, those of you who don't know, you
- 39:18Speaker 1: can check out Hannah's Boop vocal stem, where I don't know,
- 39:22Speaker 1: do you want to describe it?
- 39:24Speaker 3: I was walking through Times Square and I heard a
- 39:27Speaker 3: man say, oh, well, we could see boo, And then
- 39:32Speaker 3: I took a video of myself in my dressing room
- 39:35Speaker 3: for my friends, and somehow the internet took hold of it.
- 39:40Speaker 1: And then- Did what they did.
- 39:42Speaker 3: I'm on 8th Avenue, and people are screaming, we.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Can see boop!
- 39:45Speaker 2: And I'm like, what? How does that feel? Does it
- 39:48Speaker 2: feel like surreal? Does it make you happy? Does it
- 39:50Speaker 2: feel weird? Or like, what does that feel like?
- 39:53Speaker 3: It's kind of a combination of all of those things.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I've been making videos for so long and no one
- 39:58Speaker 3: cared at all. And I would make music videos that
- 40:01Speaker 3: I would spend weeks on. And no one cares about that.
- 40:04Speaker 3: And then I did this video and people are screaming
- 40:06Speaker 3: at me on the street. But it's actually so fun
- 40:09Speaker 3: and silly. And I always say that I'm like famous
- 40:12Speaker 3: between like 43rd and 48th on 8th Avenue only. Just
- 40:17Speaker 3: gay people on bikes being like, yes, diva!
- 40:20Speaker 1: Yes, honey!
- 40:21Speaker 3: Which I couldn't ask for anything more.
- 40:23Speaker 1: There's nothing more satisfying than being a geotagged celebrity just
- 40:31Speaker 1: tied to a specific, but you're right. The second you
- 40:33Speaker 1: leave Times Square, no one is going to know that
- 40:35Speaker 1: you're the poop girl. No one.
- 40:37Speaker 3: They're like, poop?
- 40:38Speaker 1: What?
- 40:38Speaker 3: Are you okay?
- 40:39Speaker 1: Something's wrong. Are you a junior 5150 hole? Do we
- 40:43Speaker 1: need a can cup to a gurney? Okay. So you've
- 40:46Speaker 1: been understudying every single Mary.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:50Speaker 1: What's that like? Yeah.
- 40:51Speaker 2: What is that like?
- 40:52Speaker 3: It's wild. It's so insane to be like, Maya Rudolph
- 40:57Speaker 3: and Titus Burgess are in my phone. That's crazy.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Well, that's because you stole their number. They do not
- 41:03Speaker 1: give that to you.
- 41:04Speaker 3: This is a reveal.
- 41:05Speaker 1: They do not give that willingly.
- 41:07Speaker 3: It's just so astounding to be able to watch these
- 41:11Speaker 3: people and learn from them. And also, everyone has been
- 41:14Speaker 3: so kind and I haven't felt less than, you know,
- 41:20Speaker 3: these people are embracing me and asking me questions, which
- 41:24Speaker 3: is like so bonkers that I can talk to Betty
- 41:27Speaker 3: Gilpin and be like, oh, yeah, that one scene. Okay, yeah,
- 41:29Speaker 3: I do it like this. How are you going to
- 41:30Speaker 3: do it? Like, I never expected this in a million years.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 41:34Speaker 2: But you, I mean, you've been on the show since
- 41:36Speaker 2: the beginning. If not you, then who?
- 41:38Speaker 3: I am probably the person who has... heard the show
- 41:42Speaker 3: the most.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Times so I mean it it seems so even if
- 41:47Speaker 2: somebody who's coming in and stepping into one of the
- 41:49Speaker 2: Mary's even if that person is like famous and they've
- 41:52Speaker 2: done lots of things they know that you know the
- 41:55Speaker 2: show right and you and again like if not you
- 41:59Speaker 2: then who right because you you know the whole thing
- 42:02Speaker 2: so I mean I think it's a testament to your
- 42:04Speaker 2: work it's it's um You know, and they know that
- 42:08Speaker 2: you've done this. It's like, oh, let's ask Hannah. You
- 42:10Speaker 2: know who'll know? Hannah will know.
- 42:12Speaker 3: And it really is one of those things that until
- 42:14Speaker 3: you've done it, you can only practice in a rehearsal
- 42:18Speaker 3: room so much without an audience. And then you get
- 42:20Speaker 3: on stage and you're like, oh, wait, I have the
- 42:22Speaker 3: dress and the audience is doing this and what's happening?
- 42:25Speaker 3: It's like truly a train ride. You just have to
- 42:28Speaker 3: get on the train.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Is there a moment in the show you said you've
- 42:31Speaker 1: heard it the most because you're listening every year? You're
- 42:33Speaker 1: there at the theater every night hearing it, right? Is
- 42:36Speaker 1: there a moment in the show where you're like surprised
- 42:38Speaker 1: something gets a laugh or the audiences are just so
- 42:41Speaker 1: varied now that it's on Broadway compared to when it
- 42:44Speaker 1: was at the Lortel?
- 42:45Speaker 3: The audiences are really different now because our first night
- 42:49Speaker 3: at the Lortel, Sam Pinkleton, the director, was like, there
- 42:51Speaker 3: are too many gay people here. It was just like
- 42:53Speaker 3: every gay person in the world was coming to see O'Berry.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Yeah, literally.
- 42:58Speaker 3: And now I go to the stage door and people
- 42:59Speaker 3: are like– I'm here for my grandma's 80th birthday. This
- 43:03Speaker 3: is our anniversary present. I'm like looking at a nine
- 43:07Speaker 3: year old who's like, I loved the show. And I'm like, did.
- 43:10Speaker 1: You literally say the F slur?
- 43:14Speaker 3: And I look at the parents and I'm like, They
- 43:17Speaker 3: saw it and they're like, yeah. But my parents did
- 43:20Speaker 3: that too. I saw Rent when I was like 11
- 43:22Speaker 3: or something. Love that.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Love that for you. Of course. Clearly a formative experience.
- 43:27Speaker 3: 100%. I bought the libretto and was doing a one-woman production.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Rent at my house every night for my family.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Sure, sure, sure. Yeah. Yeah, I saw a thing. My friend,
- 43:35Speaker 1: they did Rent at her high school, but they took
- 43:37Speaker 1: insulin instead of AZT.
- 43:39Speaker 3: I always thought that was a myth.
- 43:40Speaker 1: No, it was real. That's real? Instead of their HIV medication,
- 43:44Speaker 1: they were taking insulin. I'd like the local middle school.
- 43:48Speaker 3: The audience is gasping.
- 43:51Speaker 1: It's rough when we gag the camera crew.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Everyone's like silent. Someone did once on this island, but
- 43:58Speaker 3: it was the island of Manhattan.
- 44:02Speaker 1: No. Oh, no.
- 44:05Speaker 2: How does it even work?
- 44:06Speaker 3: And that is kind of my question as well. It doesn't.
- 44:10Speaker 3: That's the answer. It simply doesn't work.
- 44:12Speaker 2: We saw that show. That doesn't work.
- 44:16Speaker 3: I just did Hairspray over the summer at the Muni
- 44:18Speaker 3: in St. Louis, and I was doing some research online.
- 44:22Speaker 3: And in the, what do you call it?
- 44:24Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 44:25Speaker 3: You're a lawyer. The rights or whatever. It's like, no,
- 44:27Speaker 3: this is a play about race. You cannot do this
- 44:31Speaker 3: with all white people. You cannot get the rights to this.
- 44:35Speaker 3: We're not asking for your interpretation here. This is what
- 44:38Speaker 3: it is. And I feel like we need that for
- 44:41Speaker 3: Once on this Island, too. Actually, we need that for
- 44:42Speaker 3: a lot of stuff.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah. Do you adapt your O'Mary performance to the
- 44:47Speaker 1: Mary on stage? When you're understudying Betty Gilpin versus Maya
- 44:53Speaker 1: versus Titus, do you change your performance to their interpretation
- 44:58Speaker 1: of the role?
- 44:59Speaker 3: I don't change my performance.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Because you're that girl. Because you're her.
- 45:02Speaker 3: And everyone has been so kind. Cole and Sam have
- 45:04Speaker 3: been like, no, you do you. You have your thing.
- 45:07Speaker 3: And now I've done it enough times. I've done it
- 45:09Speaker 3: like over 50 times now. So I've kind of solidified
- 45:12Speaker 3: my performance. But I do steal stuff from other Marys.
- 45:15Speaker 3: I'm like, that's funny. I want to try doing that. Like, oh,
- 45:17Speaker 3: that's like this little Maya thing or Jinx thing. Like,
- 45:20Speaker 3: let me try it. And it doesn't always work when
- 45:21Speaker 3: I do it because it's like it's their thing. But
- 45:25Speaker 3: it's fun to kind of like play around and get
- 45:28Speaker 3: ideas from other people. in seeing the show a billion,
- 45:31Speaker 3: million times, it still feels fresh. It still feels new.
- 45:34Speaker 3: And I can watch it and go, oh my gosh, wait. Oh,
- 45:36Speaker 3: that line. Oh, I never thought of it that way.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Let me try it like that too.
- 45:41Speaker 2: So I'm just curious about when somebody is an understudy,
- 45:44Speaker 2: and you said you've done it about 50 times?
- 45:47Speaker 3: I think I've done Mary probably... At this point, maybe more,
- 45:52Speaker 3: but I had a two-week run a little while ago
- 45:55Speaker 3: where I did the bulk of my performances. And then
- 45:58Speaker 3: from there did like, you know, for various Marys when
- 46:01Speaker 3: they had scheduled events or sickness or whatever.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Right. So I was going to ask you, what are
- 46:05Speaker 2: the reasons why people don't come?
- 46:08Speaker 3: I mean, sometimes it's planned ahead. And so I know
- 46:10Speaker 3: in advance that I'm going on. And then sometimes it's
- 46:13Speaker 3: like 30 minutes before the show starts and someone's like,
- 46:15Speaker 3: I don't feel well. I have to leave the building
- 46:17Speaker 3: right now. So it really is varied, but as understudies.
- 46:21Speaker 1: It was me. I was the audience member. Sorry. I
- 46:22Speaker 1: just had to go. I had to leave.
- 46:23Speaker 3: They were like, Hannah, you're on.
- 46:25Speaker 1: You're on. Go take a seat.
- 46:27Speaker 3: You just don't know. We have to be there every night.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Understudies are there every night. We're not in full costume
- 46:32Speaker 3: or makeup or anything, but we are waiting upstairs. For
- 46:35Speaker 3: the call. For the call, just in case. There's only
- 46:38Speaker 3: been one time where someone had to go on mid-show
- 46:40Speaker 3: because someone got sick. And I mean- It's like a
- 46:44Speaker 3: well-oiled machine. It's boom, boom, boom. Put the costume on.
- 46:46Speaker 3: We make an announcement. You're out there. Like it's seamless.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Our crew is like the best in the world. They're amazing.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Name your favorite union role. You love your crew? Name
- 46:56Speaker 1: your favorite union role.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Hannah.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Feather bedding.
- 46:59Speaker 3: I knew that there would be a quiz and I
- 47:01Speaker 3: would be panicked.
- 47:02Speaker 1: A pop quiz about union contracts. Okay, okay. This is good.
- 47:05Speaker 3: This is good. Wait, let me think. Proud member of Actors' Equity.
- 47:10Speaker 1: She wants that health insurance. She's like, please. We'll be
- 47:15Speaker 1: right back after this break.
- 47:17Speaker 3: I'm panicked. I'm panicked. I don't know anything about my contract.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Isn't that scary?
- 47:21Speaker 1: Well, you're wearing your heated rivalry shirt today. Show the dolls,
- 47:24Speaker 1: show the girls.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Diva.
- 47:27Speaker 1: You can see boop, you can see heated rivalry.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Speaking of spitting in each other's mouths.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Season two is filming right now.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 47:36Speaker 1: So we can manifest.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Is it about them again?
- 47:40Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Or is it about the next, because it's a series
- 47:43Speaker 2: of books, right?
- 47:43Speaker 3: Yes, I've read all the books.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Did you read the books?
- 47:45Speaker 2: No, so I listen to audio books a lot and
- 47:49Speaker 2: I got it. The thing about audio books is if
- 47:54Speaker 2: the actor who's doing the book bothers you in any way,
- 48:00Speaker 2: then it ruins the book. And I did not like
- 48:03Speaker 2: the way that the reader was reading it.
- 48:05Speaker 3: Famously, you are very right in that a lot of
- 48:08Speaker 3: people hate the person who read the books. And I
- 48:11Speaker 3: think they're trying to redo them because it's so bad
- 48:14Speaker 3: and no one wants to listen to it.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't. I thought it was just me being- No. Oh, really?
- 48:18Speaker 2: I did not know that.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Who was the reader?
- 48:19Speaker 3: Sorry to him. We love you, whoever you are.
- 48:21Speaker 1: It was Stanley Tucci. It's tough.
- 48:23Speaker 3: He's kind of like, he like does a weird New
- 48:26Speaker 3: York accent. Yes, yes, yes.
- 48:28Speaker 2: That's what, it was like the first, I mean, and
- 48:32Speaker 2: I listened to it for like five minutes. And I
- 48:35Speaker 2: was like, I cannot, every now and then there'll be
- 48:38Speaker 2: something that I pick up. You know what? An R.I.P.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Andre Leon Talley. I picked up his book and I
- 48:43Speaker 2: wanted to listen to it. Andre Leontali was good at
- 48:48Speaker 2: a lot of things.
- 48:49Speaker 1: But not narrating them.
- 48:50Speaker 2: But not narrating his own story. Oh, that's tough. Yeah.
- 48:54Speaker 2: It was actually really, really bad. And I felt terrible
- 48:56Speaker 2: because he's an icon, right? And I wanted to– and
- 48:59Speaker 2: his life story is very interesting. But it was better
- 49:03Speaker 2: for me to read it.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Which side of the America's Next Top Model drama do
- 49:11Speaker 1: you think Andre Leontali would fall on now? There's like
- 49:14Speaker 1: the comeuppance for Tyra.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 49:18Speaker 1: And they're asking all the past judges to kind of
- 49:20Speaker 1: weigh in on whether or not what Ken Mock and
- 49:22Speaker 1: Tyra were doing was ethical. Was he a judge? Yeah,
- 49:26Speaker 1: he was a judge. Okay.
- 49:27Speaker 2: I tapped out of that show real early.
- 49:29Speaker 1: That's how I knew who he was.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 49:30Speaker 1: From back in like the early 2000s. Oh, my God.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Andre Leontali is iconic. I don't like reality TV.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Okay.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Did you watch Heat of Rivalry in any particular place
- 49:42Speaker 1: that you wanted to tell the listeners at home?
- 49:45Speaker 3: This feels like a trap.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Didn't you watch it on a plane?
- 49:49Speaker 3: I was like... How did you know? Did you really
- 49:51Speaker 3: watch it on the plane? Okay, first I watched part
- 49:54Speaker 3: of it backstage and we were watching it in the dark,
- 49:57Speaker 3: me and Julian Mandryko.
- 49:59Speaker 1: My fellow understudy. That's your favorite union role.
- 50:00Speaker 3: And Jinx came in and was like, what's going on
- 50:03Speaker 3: in here and why are you both so red and sweaty? Oh, wait,
- 50:09Speaker 3: what the fuck? And we were like.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Why were you red and sweaty?
- 50:13Speaker 3: We were screaming, we were excited. And then I did
- 50:18Speaker 3: watch it on the plane.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Love.
- 50:20Speaker 3: And you know what I said? Well, actually I was
- 50:22Speaker 3: high and I was like a little bit paranoid about it.
- 50:26Speaker 3: Like being like, is someone going to come stop me?
- 50:29Speaker 3: And then they're going to have to ground the plane
- 50:31Speaker 3: and I'm going.
- 50:32Speaker 1: To be arrested for homosexuality.
- 50:34Speaker 3: They're like, she's did it.
- 50:36Speaker 2: You're watching it on your laptop or take it.
- 50:39Speaker 3: I was watching it on my laptop and you know
- 50:41Speaker 3: what I did? When there was full ass, can I
- 50:43Speaker 3: say ass?
- 50:44Speaker 2: Sure.
- 50:45Speaker 3: When there was full ass, I would sort of minimize
- 50:47Speaker 3: the screen so it became small window and then I'd
- 50:51Speaker 3: be like, okay, I think the ass is gone and
- 50:52Speaker 3: bring it back.
- 50:53Speaker 1: This was me on like my home computer when I
- 50:54Speaker 1: was 14. I think that's why people.
- 50:58Speaker 3: Lightweighted my memory.
- 51:02Speaker 1: The Dell.
- 51:03Speaker 3: No, I'm doing my homework. I swear.
- 51:08Speaker 1: I'm sick. I was not doing one. I never did one. Oh,
- 51:13Speaker 1: my God. I'm crying.
- 51:14Speaker 3: Heated rivalry, it brings it out of you. Like, my
- 51:16Speaker 3: stage manager has been making me read heated rivalry fan fiction,
- 51:19Speaker 3: making me a kid. I'm staying up until 4 a.m.
- 51:22Speaker 1: There's no stage manager. It's just you.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Making me the voice in my head, yeah. But it
- 51:27Speaker 3: really is, like, it is that teenage, like, 14-year-old, like,
- 51:31Speaker 3: me on the train being like, holy shit.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Bro.
- 51:35Speaker 3: But I'm also scared on the train that someone's going
- 51:37Speaker 3: to look over my shoulder and take a photo of me.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Reading about them. The boop girl. The boop girl is
- 51:43Speaker 3: reading porn on the subway.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Eating ass on the Q train. I do like to
- 51:47Speaker 1: read people over people's shoulders.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Me too. I do all the time.
- 51:50Speaker 1: All the time.
- 51:51Speaker 2: I do all the time. My favorite moment ever, I
- 51:56Speaker 2: was living in Brooklyn and I was on my way
- 51:58Speaker 2: home and I lived in Flatbush. And Flatbush was super
- 52:03Speaker 2: duper Haitian, right? So I was standing there. by the
- 52:07Speaker 2: door and I was looking over the shoulder of a
- 52:09Speaker 2: Haitian woman who was having an argument with her boyfriend.
- 52:13Speaker 2: And let me tell you something. Not only was I
- 52:15Speaker 2: reading what she said.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Because it was, yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 2: But when I was reading, I was reading it, but
- 52:20Speaker 2: I also took pictures.
- 52:22Speaker 1: No.
- 52:22Speaker 2: And I sent it to my cousin group chat. And
- 52:26Speaker 2: I have a lot of cousins. And they were like,
- 52:28Speaker 2: what happened next? And I was like, and it was like,
- 52:31Speaker 2: he was saying things to her like- I said that
- 52:34Speaker 2: I was sorry. How could I make it up to you?
- 52:37Speaker 2: Like it was, and it was like a very like
- 52:39Speaker 2: deep conversation. It was great. Anyway, I'm a nosy body.
- 52:43Speaker 3: I love that because I was like, no one would
- 52:45Speaker 3: take a photo of me reading smut. They would. They
- 52:48Speaker 3: would in a smut website. If you have a photo
- 52:50Speaker 3: of me, please send it.
- 52:51Speaker 2: I actually, you know, I'm admitting this about myself. I
- 52:54Speaker 2: actually do it all the time. Another time I was,
- 52:57Speaker 2: there was somebody, it was a nun. She was reading
- 53:00Speaker 2: a book.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Melissa.
- 53:01Speaker 3: Wait, listen.
- 53:02Speaker 2: She was reading a book.
- 53:04Speaker 1: About Judaism.
- 53:05Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. It was a book.
- 53:06Speaker 3: But her bookmark was.
- 53:09Speaker 2: Was like this giant picture of a very big, beaten
- 53:16Speaker 2: and battered Jesus. It was so bad that I was like,
- 53:22Speaker 2: no one's going to believe me. So I just took
- 53:24Speaker 2: a picture of it.
- 53:25Speaker 1: It was like the passion of Christ, like imagery. Worse.
- 53:29Speaker 2: It was so bad.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Worse than a Mel Gibson movie.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Yes. Wow. Yes, yes, yes.
- 53:34Speaker 1: I'm going to look for it.
- 53:35Speaker 2: I know CJ won't let us put it up, but
- 53:37Speaker 2: it was bad.
- 53:38Speaker 1: I'm eating you up today. I'm eating him. I'm eating
- 53:41Speaker 1: his ass up. He loves it.
- 53:44Speaker 3: I was on the train and there was a woman...
- 53:46Speaker 3: Who came on sort of talking to herself. And then
- 53:49Speaker 3: she was yelling at something on her phone. And I
- 53:51Speaker 3: was like, I have to know. Having a full like
- 53:54Speaker 3: upset argument. I look. She's literally on Facebook yelling at
- 53:58Speaker 3: a black and white photo of Michael Jackson.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 54:00Speaker 3: Having a full conversation.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Okay. Been there. Been there. No.
- 54:04Speaker 3: It was you.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 1: No. We've talked about the Michael Jackson reenactment. TV show
- 54:11Speaker 1: on TLC. No.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Okay. All kinds of wrong.
- 54:14Speaker 3: All kinds of wrong.
- 54:15Speaker 2: You need to pay attention. So back in the day
- 54:18Speaker 2: when Michael Jackson was on trial for, I think, allegations
- 54:22Speaker 2: of sexual abuse for, right? I think that's what it was. Yes,
- 54:25Speaker 2: that's what it was. But they weren't allowed to have
- 54:29Speaker 2: cameras in the courtroom. So E, entertainment, news, television, decided
- 54:35Speaker 2: that they were going to do a daily reenactment of
- 54:40Speaker 2: what happened in the trial. And they... And they had
- 54:45Speaker 2: this actor who was all made up. But one of
- 54:49Speaker 2: the things I didn't realize that Michael Jackson was doing
- 54:51Speaker 2: during the trial was like, anytime somebody would say something
- 54:55Speaker 2: that he didn't agree with, he would like roll his eyes.
- 54:58Speaker 2: But like, and I didn't know whether or not the guy-
- 55:03Speaker 2: Was that a choice? Was like, was he being extra
- 55:05Speaker 2: campy with it? Or did Michael Jackson actually do it?
- 55:08Speaker 2: Either way.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Because Michael Jackson was funny as hell. Like that clip
- 55:11Speaker 1: of him being like, I hate touring. My arm. I
- 55:16Speaker 1: can't raise my arm higher than this. I can't use
- 55:21Speaker 1: my shoulder.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Imagine booking that though. You're like, I didn't. I got
- 55:27Speaker 3: Michael Jackson reenactment trial job. No lines.
- 55:31Speaker 2: But we've looked for him and the guy is like,
- 55:34Speaker 2: he had CJ looked for him for us. Cause I
- 55:37Speaker 2: was talking about it. CJ found him and said that,
- 55:41Speaker 2: He hasn't posted anything since like 2003, like whatever it was,
- 55:45Speaker 2: but like a really long time. And he has vanished.
- 55:48Speaker 2: So maybe he's now he's selling insurance.
- 55:50Speaker 3: I hope so. I hope that that didn't ruin his life.
- 55:54Speaker 3: The Michael Jackson reenactment.
- 55:55Speaker 2: I mean, I think it did.
- 55:56Speaker 1: He's doing the medical records that you had to stop doing.
- 55:59Speaker 1: You had to stop doing them.
- 56:00Speaker 3: I was probably talking to him on Slack.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Okay. Would you like to answer some questions from our
- 56:06Speaker 1: audience with us? Absolutely. Welcome back to Brief Recess. We're
- 56:14Speaker 1: going to talk about... No, you're doing Tales from the DM.
- 56:17Speaker 1: I'm going to pick that up.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you're doing Tales from the.
- 56:18Speaker 1: DM, right?
- 56:19Speaker 3: This is the second time you've done an intro, so.
- 56:21Speaker 2: I know.
- 56:22Speaker 1: It's tough.
- 56:26Speaker 3: Hey, friends.
- 56:26Speaker 2: We're going to do Tales from the DM now. And
- 56:28Speaker 2: what do I always say? While Michael is a lawyer,
- 56:31Speaker 2: he's not your lawyer, so get your own.
- 56:34Speaker 1: Welcome back. Okay. Let's see what y'all wrote in this week.
- 56:40Speaker 1: What sick and twisted... Wicked and wild questions. Absolutely death
- 56:47Speaker 1: traps these listeners are setting for us. They're trying to
- 56:50Speaker 1: get us canceled with these questions. Oh, no. So get ready. CJ,
- 56:54Speaker 1: anyone we need to make sure we get to.
- 56:56Speaker 2: The mean comment.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Oh, there's a mean comment.
- 56:58Speaker 2: There's a mean comment.
- 56:59Speaker 3: About you two?
- 57:00Speaker 1: Let's have Hannah do a dramatic reading. Okay. Show everyone
- 57:03Speaker 1: your prowess. Show everyone.
- 57:05Speaker 3: This is a cold read?
- 57:06Speaker 1: This is a cold read.
- 57:07Speaker 3: I did not see this before.
- 57:08Speaker 1: And I have not. I haven't either. So I'm actually ready.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I actually love it.
- 57:11Speaker 1: You love it?
- 57:12Speaker 2: I love it. Are we ready?
- 57:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 57:13Speaker 3: This is from Content Consumer 01123.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Clearly a verified account.
- 57:19Speaker 3: Yep.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Blue checkmark. I'm already mad.
- 57:22Speaker 3: At least Homie admits he's in an echo chamber. Holy presumption, cowboy.
- 57:27Speaker 3: Look at them tiptoeing and trying to be so politely biased.
- 57:31Speaker 3: I would pass out with the amount of effort they
- 57:33Speaker 3: mustered to be so disingenuous.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Whoa.
- 57:37Speaker 1: I would pass out? What was disingenuous?
- 57:40Speaker 2: It was when we were talking to Congressman Garcia.
- 57:42Speaker 1: About what?
- 57:44Speaker 2: We were talking.
- 57:45Speaker 1: About the Epstein files.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:47Speaker 1: So this is a pro Epstein person. He was my
- 57:50Speaker 1: personal financier. I loved all the business I did with him. Jeff,
- 57:54Speaker 1: my guy, Jeff, you seem like a great guy. You
- 57:56Speaker 1: got me good returns. Jeff, he was always going to
- 58:00Speaker 1: his island. He loved the Caribbean. What a guy. Who
- 58:03Speaker 1: the fuck is this coming for me in my gig?
- 58:07Speaker 3: Content consumer 011.
- 58:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he's got to use that. And that's the name
- 58:11Speaker 1: he can operate under as an Epstein supporter. God, I
- 58:16Speaker 1: swear to God, people spend so much time, money, energy.
- 58:19Speaker 2: They really do. But yeah, people really do. It's really fascinating.
- 58:24Speaker 2: People say a lot of things to us that aren't
- 58:26Speaker 2: very nice. It's fine. Here's the thing. So a couple
- 58:29Speaker 2: of weeks ago, there was somebody who said that Mike
- 58:31Speaker 2: and I were stupid because we didn't know the difference
- 58:34Speaker 2: between reform. reflection pool versus reflecting pool, come to find
- 58:38Speaker 2: out that it's the same thing.
- 58:39Speaker 1: So, right.
- 58:43Speaker 2: So, even though that guy was wrong, he made a point.
- 58:48Speaker 2: He was trying to make a point of some kind.
- 58:50Speaker 2: I don't know what this guy is talking about.
- 58:51Speaker 3: I have no clue. At that point, it was just
- 58:53Speaker 3: words and tone.
- 58:55Speaker 2: Yes. It's just, what does that mean? Tiptoeing and trying
- 58:58Speaker 2: to be so politely biased.
- 59:00Speaker 3: What are you?
- 59:01Speaker 2: There's no context.
- 59:04Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 59:05Speaker 1: So Liliana, what CJ? Liliana is a good one too.
- 59:09Speaker 4: I also like lulu's crepes and croissants.
- 59:13Speaker 2: This is.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Cj's usually right here just like yelling at me to
- 59:20Speaker 1: do my job it's.
- 59:21Speaker 3: So funny um.
- 59:25Speaker 1: CJ, this is a fucking croissant.
- 59:28Speaker 3: Lulu's Crepes and Croissants.
- 59:30Speaker 1: I can just read it if you want.
- 59:31Speaker 2: It's... Liliana Langston? No.
- 59:33Speaker 4: Lulu's Crepes and Croissants. Lulu's Crepes and Croissants wants to
- 59:38Speaker 4: know if they can give the middle finger to their
- 59:40Speaker 4: lawyer on the stand.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Thank you for writing in. I just wanted to hear
- 59:45Speaker 1: CJ say... Lulu's Crepes and Croissants one more time because
- 59:51Speaker 1: that was actually.
- 59:51Speaker 2: You can't hear that enough.
- 59:52Speaker 1: That really made my day. Lulu's Crepes and Croissants. Sorry,
- 59:56Speaker 1: who's it from? Can you give the middle finger to
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: a lawyer from On the Witness stand?
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Is it your lawyer or the other lawyer?
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: So someone's writing in asking if they can do that.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: But is it to their lawyer? Or what do you
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: call the other person? Yikes, I don't know.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Opposing counsel.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Ooh, I love that.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Can I give the middle finger to the opposing counsel?
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Hannah grew up, she always, as a little girl, she
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: always wanted to be opposing counsel. Oh my God!
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: Oh my God, Melissa! It's worse than I could ever imagine.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: The Jesus is really bad. I told you. Show CJ,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I'm sorry, actual question, did they do all that to Jesus? Yes.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: They did.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: He was flayed.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I'm not allowed to watch heated rivalry on
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: the plane, but you can put that on the subway.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Delta, please.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: To be fair, to be fair, this person was reading
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: their book. It's their bookmark. And I happened to see it.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: This person's a nun.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: A bookmark?
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Where are you buying that bookmark?
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: It's bad, isn't it?
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: The women in disobedience would never. Never.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: They would never.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: They would never. They were also Hasidic Jews. Those were Jewish.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: They also literally would never. They're like, it's a false prophet.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: That was actually shocking. I felt shocked. I know.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: That's why I was like, no.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I don't know if we're going to be able to
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: show that on YouTube.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: No, we can't show that.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Yeah. So we'll just describe it for you. It looks
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: like a very bloody.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Somebody who's been flayed.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: There was a lot more blood than I anticipated.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Sure. Yeah.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: And that's why I took a picture of it because
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: there is no way to describe that to somebody so
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: that they would believe me.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Actually, the gasps that we gossiped were evidence enough that
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: no one would have believed you.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: You described it to us and we couldn't have imagined that.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: You could not have.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: I told you. Wow.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Photojournalism. Really? No. I mean, you could really.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: Anyway, are you going to answer crepes and croissants?
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Middle finger. So this is where I have to toe
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: a delicate line because I can't tell you to do
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: anything in court that is like breaking the rules or
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: the law because then I'll get in trouble. I will say, though,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: witnesses are called or subpoenaed or they really don't want
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: to be there sometimes. And I've seen them do a
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: lot of things that the lawyers and the judges would
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: prefer you don't do. such as give the finger to
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the other attorney. You can be held in contempt, but
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: it's usually for like repeatedly not answering a question or
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: repeatedly like not doing something. But we have hostile witnesses
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: all the time. I mean, are you following the Lindsay
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Clancy trial at all? There are some witnesses on that
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: trial right now that are, they really don't want to
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: be there. Lindsay Clancy's doctors, they're like, they don't want
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: to be asked about the ways in which they failed
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: that woman with her medication. So that's really upsetting.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: But you don't have to do a double. You could
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: do a subtle this. You could do I'm wiping my eye.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: That's kind of my advice.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: You could. And a lot of people do that in O'Mary.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: Yes, that's kind of acting 101 is middle finger placement.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: But Michael, let me ask you, though. Tossing up the
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: middle finger in the middle of court is rude.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Totally.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Right? But is it against the law? And what you
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: said about finding somebody in contempt, right?
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Okay, this is actually interesting because there are a lot
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: of First Amendment cases around lewd gestures and swear words. Okay.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: So during the Vietnam War, there was a lot of
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: fuck the war imagery of shirts and jackets and stuff.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: And there is Supreme Court cases around people being allowed
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: to wear fuck the war. Fuck war, I think, was the–
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm too young. But I don't know
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: what the actual term was. But it was everywhere kind
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: of like fuck ice now. People were wearing them to court,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: to jury duty. And a case made it all the
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: way up to Miss Supreme Courtess, where they decided that
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: it was actually– it was not considered hate speech or
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: speech that would invoke violence or to lewd to wear
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: that on public government property. Mm-hmm. Because it was like
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: an act of protest. So if we could find a
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: way to frame– Yes. What's the lawyer doing or giving
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: the middle finger to? Because if it is this sort
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: of like protest versus amendment thing– Mm-hmm. then you might
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: have some coverage under the Supreme Court precedent.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: So I wonder if somebody is doing that because they've
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: been subpoenaed and they are resentful of being here. And
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: they're going to answer your questions, but they want you
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: to know that they're pissed off about it. So yes,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: I'm going to answer your question, but you know what
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I think about this process?
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Lulu's Crepes and Croissants.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Well, she has a business she has to get back to.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: What did they say about those croissants, Lulu? Did someone say,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: and now you're on trial? Was it not flaky enough
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: and they said that and now you're getting sued? What
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: happened at the bakery?
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: We need to know.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: What's going on in the bakery?
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: This is a hallmark mystery waiting to happen.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Friends to enemies to lovers. Lulu's crepes and croissants.
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: The lawyer and Lulu actually threw the middle finger.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: It's like you've got mail.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: Meg Ryan.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: I love that movie.
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: Such a good movie.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: I mean, it's ridiculous, but I love it. All those
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Nora Ephron movies are so, right? Everything's so pretty.
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: I just watched It's Complicated, the one with Alec Baldwin
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: and Meryl Streep.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Oh, yes. Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: It's gorgeous. Her house is stunning.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Same thing. Something's got to give. The house is the house.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: It's always the house. Come on.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Anyway, Liliana Langston. Let's read this one.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: What did they say?
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Mr. Foot, this is my submission to Tales for the DMs.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I started school to become paralegal. Do you or Melissa
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: have any advice or words of wisdom? Melissa used to
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: be a paralegal and then worked on the Enrod case
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and then her hair fell out. Yeah. But it's back.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: It's back.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: It looks gorgeous.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: And she doesn't work there anymore. Yeah. What's working in
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: law actually like? Ooh, spare me the horror stories because
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I already know.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: I need encouragement. One of my professors takes her job
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: too seriously. I already know it's going to be a
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: bitch-ass class. Anyways, your profile pic is serving. Thank you.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: But TBH is kind of giving Third Reich, okay, yikes.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: Serving, but Third Reich, not a compliment, I'd say.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: And then they go on to say, but don't change it.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Keep them guessing. Love you.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: Oh, keep them guessing. I don't think that's something we
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: want to guess about.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Liliana, I will tell you what it was like to
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: be a paralegal. And no horror stories. I know you've
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: heard all of them before. It's very, I will say
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: my experience was that it was very mundane and very tedious. Now,
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: if you are somebody who likes research and the law
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: firm or the lawyer that you're working with is using
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: you in that way, then it could be interesting. But
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: in my experience, what I found was that the partners
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: or the senior associates would usually use the junior associates
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: to do the research to help them and give them practice.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: And that I, as the paralegal, usually ended up maybe
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: looking over briefs and making corrections and things like that.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: I did not find that work to be interesting or
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: exciting at all, but I also think it depends on
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: what your interest is, right? So maybe if I had
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: been entertainment law or sports law, that may have been
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: more interesting, but I was a litigation paralegal and an
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: immigration paralegal, and that was not fun or interesting at all.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: The other thing I'll say though, is that when I
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: was a paralegal for a nonprofit organization, that was very
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: interesting because it was a lot of different kinds of
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: cases that I ended up with. And because it was
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: a nonprofit, we didn't have a huge budget. So I
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: was being given some interesting work to do. So I
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: think I think it depends. So that's my sort of
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: honest take on it.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: I was going to say the nonprofit work and then
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: also detained immigration law cases, you end up doing a
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: lot of social work things. So you're coordinating getting someone released,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: and then when they're released, you're there and helping bring
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: them to a homeless shelter. There are different areas that paralegals,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: depending on the area of practice, are going to end
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: up doing all sorts of different things. So figure out
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: what excites you about what would be exciting to you
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: in any job, not just a paralegal job. What's exciting
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: to you about a day-to-day work life? And then back
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: into that is how I would frame it.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: The other thing I'll say is that I feel like
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: the bigger the firm.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: The less- The less hands-on.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: The less interesting the work will be because they have
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: so many bodies. To do the good stuff, right? Now,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: the flip side of that is that if you work
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: for a small firm or a nonprofit, you won't make
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: as much money. So what is important to you? I
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: don't know if we've helped at all, but.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: That's... Yeah, yeah. Sorry. Okay.
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: It sounded really good.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: We really got to get into this with Hannah, actually.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Which one? The woman who sent lemons to her ex.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: A woman sent a lemon.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: It's really good, actually.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: She sent one lemon to her ex every day for
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: a really long time.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: I want to say a year.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I want to say at least a lemon a day.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: One lemon a day. And apparently, this is the part
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: that I still don't understand how she managed to do this.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: The lemon delivery seemed to follow him.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Wherever.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Right? So that if he was on a softball league-
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: There was a lemon delivered to him there.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: CJ's got to fact check us because I know there
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: was the clown sent to a softball game, right?
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: Oh, maybe.
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: She sent 1,847 single lemons.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Yeah. CJ kills us.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: Thank you, CJ.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Didn't she also send it to him?
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: There was one that ended up at his job interview.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: Like that, that for me, I was like, I don't understand. Like,
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: how did she know? Oh, another one was sent to
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: his dad in the hospital. Like it was weird.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: But anyway, she got arrested for that.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Well, sure. Okay. But I want to know what did
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: he do?
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: Well, well, he had to have done something to get
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: the lemons.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: There's two sides to every story, right?
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: But I, I am still stuck on what is illegal and,
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: about getting sent one lemon. It's not like you got
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: sent the dog turd every day.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: It's so misogynistic. What? I think it's so misogynistic.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Well, that's what this person says.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Yeah, they're saying that these women are getting arrested. Meanwhile,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: women are out here getting relentlessly stalked and genuinely fearing
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: for their lives.
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: Right, and he's not fearing for his life. Is that
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: what he claimed?
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: No, he was annoyed. He was annoyed, and now he's
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: afraid of lemons.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. CJ, didn't he have a fear?
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: I think so.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I thought it was the weirdest. There were so
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: many things about that that I almost didn't believe. And
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: I was hoping that there was something else because that
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: can't be all there is.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: Do you know what I mean? That can't be all
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: there is.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: If that is technically harassment and I'm like, sure, technically, sure.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: On paper, that's harassment. Is it? But everything else that
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: is also harassment has to be investigated and prosecuted. If
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: we're prosecuting Lemon Lady.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: Lemon Lady.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: What about the guy following people around? Right. What about
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: people stalking each other? And that's not getting enforced. But
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: then what? The Lemon Lady? A Thousand Lemons?
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: And what is the harm? Other than you being irritated, right?
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: You're annoyed. You're annoyed. You're annoyed.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: It's annoying. I'd be annoyed if somebody sent me a
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: lemon every day, but is that illegal?
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: Well, you just need to spin it. Hello? Make the lemonade,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: as they say.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Unless they're like RFK lemons and they have salmonella. Fair.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: In which case, that's a death threat.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: I guess that's true.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Oh, wow. Okay.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: You just won the case.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Thank you. Don't give this lawyer the middle finger on
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: the stand.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: That's actually one of the crazier things I've ever heard.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Have you ever done anything crazy to an ex? spit
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: on them or.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: Spit on them.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: No. I did have an ex once where I thought
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: my greatest revenge was going to be writing sad gay
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: music and becoming the next Phoebe Bridgers. But then sort
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: of like woke up from the fog months later, read
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: the music that I had written and was like, this
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: is horrible.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: She's unwell. Yeah, truly.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: This is someone who's going through psychosis.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Cry for help. Cry for help.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Okay. Well, we hope you get the help you need.
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: At least it wasn't lemons, I guess. Although now I'm
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: kind of like, should I do that to someone? It's
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: such a funny prank, I guess, but it's harassment is
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: what I learned today.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: I mean, I still don't, and I'm not a lawyer,
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: I still don't understand why it's harassment. There was another one,
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: the one who was sending a sarcastic clown.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: To clap at his baseball games. That's actually, would you
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: take that gig?
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: To clap sarcastically.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: If someone hired you, would you?
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: She ate with that. You know what?
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: That's my audition tape.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Straight to camera. Give us, yeah. Okay.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: Good job on your baseball.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Maybe you could sing sarcastically.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: Like, what's a good sarcastic?
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: Take me out to the ball game.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Where can everyone find you? What do you want them
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: to come see you do next? Where should they catch you?
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: Should they yell boop at you in the street?
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: Please yell boop. You can catch me at the Lyceum Theater.
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: I'll be on as Mary September 13th, October 3rd and 4th.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: You can find me on the internet at Baby Magoo.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: And I'm kind of just around town.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Yeah. She's been here.
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: I've been here.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: She's done been here. Catch her on the subway watching you.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: I'm going to get one of those phone protectors now.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Thank you for watching Brief Recess. I'll see you in court.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: Not me.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Wait, really? This has been an Exactly Right production recorded
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: at iHeart Studios, hosted by me, Michael Foote.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: And me, Melissa Malbranch. Our producer is CJ Ferroni.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: This episode is edited by Mark Schroeder.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: Our associate producer is Christina Chamberlain, and our guest booker
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: is Patrick Hottner.
