[upbeat music] I know you all recognize that sexy sound. You know what's coming next.
• 0:16
It's time for the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast from Everyday Cycles studio here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Beautiful Riverwest. Got, uh, JK man and, uh, Mike over there, and T- Tony Burger across the table from me.
• 0:33
Holding up. Looking all, uh, sportscastery with the headset on. [laughs] And in this corner... Uh, you got Sven over here. Uh, how's everybody doing? Very good. How Tony? Happy to be warm. Yeah.
• 0:50
[laughs] Did warm up today a little bit, didn't it? Just, just enough. Just enough. Well, there's water on the sidewalk. I know it wasn't 32 degrees, but at least the- Right... sun was doing its sun thing.
• 1:01
Now the cold- There was a bright sun... now the cold is doing its freezing over thing. Mm. Yay. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. [laughs] Although March sunshine is coming in like gangbusters according to my solar ray. Oh, nice. Yes.
• 1:13
Too bad you can't convert that heat into, uh, heat. No kidding. [laughs] Well, you could, it's just really expensive. Tony had a little furnace issue over there at the old- Yeah... uh, Burger residence. Yeah.
• 1:24
So we're solved though? We got heat back? We have heat back. Right on. Good thing it's on a day that's 30 degrees warmer than when it went out. No kidding.
• 1:32
[laughs] And then I baked potatoes just to warm the house up even more. Oh, yeah. [laughs] Great big [laughs] Heating with, with the stove. Nothing wrong with that. You can convert it into, uh, found heat, found energy.
• 1:45
And food. [laughs] And food, yeah, for sure. Uh, yeah, so, uh, what's been happening? We, we did a ride there, over there in Zion. Right down there in Zion-O.
• 2:01
That was, uh, the last Fat Sunday ride that they do out of Zion Cyclery. I thought, "Well, we should probably go check that out," which we did. [laughs] I, I, I got a message from, from Mr.
• 2:15
Lunz that he had gone south of the border and had, uh, Bugles that were chorizo. Chor- chor... What's the s- cinnamon and sugar snack? Hmm. Churro flavored. Wow. Oh. I think I missed those Bugles.
• 2:32
No, I did not. He sent me a picture of them, in which case I responded, "Did JK make it or not?" [laughs] Because we were all late last night. Yeah, you made it. Yeah, in body. [laughs] Yeah.
• 2:44
[laughs] But hey, let's, let's throw- And that was half the battle... let's, uh, throw a shout-out to El Rongo throwing it down. Hell yeah. That was a ripper. Oh, the night before? Mm-hmm. Yes. Right on. Yeah.
• 2:57
Yeah, that was a good, that was a good ride, I mean, even for my little bit of brokenness, but...
• 3:03
Turned out to be a, a very, a very fun ride, the, uh- And speaking of brokenness [laughs] Which- There was a little bit of ice breaking.
• 3:10
[laughs] Yeah, I think there was, uh, I don't know, 35 people on it maybe, but only four people seemed to be having a lot of fun. That'd be JK, [laughs] Lunz, myself, and Greg Hahn.
• 3:22
[laughs] Yeah, we- Um, everybody e- I mean, the, the- We got to the turnaround point, and it's like, "All right, hang out." And then I turned around and ha- half the damn group was gone. [laughs] I'm like, "Whoa.
• 3:33
Whoa, whoa." Well, it, it... And the shore of Lake Michigan has such cool icy features. Yeah. And there's also this kind of freeway lane of sand, which is what everybody else was riding.
• 3:44
And I thought, "You know, you've got a fat bike. Why don't you-" Yeah... kind of explore the outer limits of your bike's, uh, you know, traction and..." Funness. Funness, and which is only about 12 feet
• 3:59
to one side of this trail- Yeah, true... where there's the, you know, the moonscape. Yeah. Sand was hard packed enough you could have rode a road bike, right? Oh, yeah, kind of. Pretty much.
• 4:07
I guess maybe- Except part of, part of the s- part of the sand was really actually kind of swimmy, which was surprising. I thought it would all be, like, pretty hard packed. Super hard? Yeah.
• 4:15
Well, that's pretty, um, fine sand down there. Mm. So I think it's, it's... it can be pretty sinky in the summer, so it still had some, some firmness to it. Yeah. I don't know.
• 4:27
Maybe those, uh, fast people were preparing for the Birkie this weekend or something- [laughs]... because, I don't know, just like... [laughs] Well, it, it was only, like, an eight-mile ride. What?
• 4:37
Or nine miles or something total, yeah. Uh, it took us about three hours, so that's pretty good pace. Yeah. You know, ride, beer, ride, beer. Makes sense. Yeah. Watch Dave almost fall in the lake beer.
• 4:51
[laughs] On record too. That was pretty good. I think I probably gotta throw that video up on- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm... the, on the, uh- That was impressive... website page. [laughs] We almost lost him like a polar bear.
• 5:03
[laughs] Yeah, that was good stuff. So, uh, thanks Zion Cyclery. I think they did four of them this year. If you guys, uh, hear about it next year, I recommend going and checking it out.
• 5:16
Chris does a really good job down there at Zion Cyclery, and they're all fat bike friends. And it's one of the few spots where you've got some contigu- some contiguous beach right now that it's worth actually riding on.
• 5:28
Yeah. Nice. Yeah. And you can make it as, like, slightl- you can make it as, you know, technical and get in places. Oh, yeah. Or you can ride- Take the sand... [laughs] relax and groovey where [laughs]
• 5:41
Yeah, I came up- My, my broken legs are, [laughs] are taking it like, yeah. [laughs] I ca- I came up with a game- All is well... that I, I didn't really explain until we were done with the ride.
• 5:49
But there was a lot of snow, not real deep, but you could see tracks. And I thought, "Well, one guy starts riding, and y'all start in a line.
• 6:00
And the guy rides his line, and you have to take your line outside of that one between the lake and his line." If you cross over his line, you lose. So he'd have to kinda- Ah... keep pushing you towards the edge.
• 6:11
Like Lake Derby. And it's- Yeah. [laughs] It, it's like how, how brave are you? How much do you wanna fall in the lake or not? [laughs] Right. Does it- I like it...
• 6:19
it was, you know, right off the ice there was only about two, three feet deep. It wasn't very deep. Right. Right. I think if Dave would've stepped off the, uh, the
• 6:28
Fortress of Solitude, it would've been maybe three feet deep right there. Right. [laughs] I know. Yeah. Well, well, my, my, I...
• 6:35
Watching it, my head was going, like- He's going- Over here in Milwaukee, not down there where it's... [laughs] Yeah, yeah...
• 6:44
a very different ice shelf along the- Yeah, you're, you were laughing in that video pretty good. [laughs] I was like- As, as he's getting off the, uh, ice onto the shore- Just watching... JK's in the background laughing.
• 6:55
[laughs] Was it- Hilarious... really cold, too, there? I, I don't remember Sunday's weather. Eh, 14 degrees, I think. Yeah. Yeah. You can survive that. You know, I had my blue balaclava on, like Tony wore in today.
• 7:04
These are, uh, like army surplus balaclavas. A guy in the neighborhood, uh, got a bunch of them for me s- for people that are... Can be whatever, riding, y- your snowshoeing, doesn't matter.
• 7:15
But I had mine on, and then my helmet was the wrong one, so I couldn't adjust it and it was kinda tight, so I took it off and I wore my snowboarding helmet, and I'm like kinda lucky maybe because those things are so warm.
• 7:27
Mm-hmm. I think I might have, uh, just overheated with that thing on. They're awesome. But even at 14 degrees, we had a tailwind on the way out, which meant you were kinda roasting,
• 7:37
and on the way back we were into that thing. [laughs] And I was happy I had some warm clothes on. I bet. For sure. Yeah, I didn't think about it quite at that damn moment, but...
• 7:47
And on the flip back, I was like, "Oh, yeah, yeah." That... [laughs] Not warm. I wonder... Yeah. [laughs] I wonder why that- Chilly... was a nice pleasant.
• 7:56
I noticed, uh, well, JK kinda took a, an early left, and we kept going straight- Yes, yeah... on the beach to the fence, and the fence is... I thought, "I don't think you wanna go past the fence."
• 8:08
[laughs] That's where the old Zion Nuclear Plant was. Oh, nice. Which they still have some of the nice, uh, wonderful fuel rods on site. So I don't think you would wanna go past the fence.
• 8:18
But the building and the containment building and all the ancillary buildings are now gone- Really?... and are one humongous pile of, uh...
• 8:26
I think they may still be churning up the concrete, but the buildings are no longer. Well, and there was a big swath of, uh, like, of the tree line on the approach into getting to the- Yeah...
• 8:40
beach itself- Those trees go away?... was just knocked down. It... Well, no, it looked like the, uh- It looked like a tornado came through... yeah, exactly. Ooh. It was just like splintered up and...
• 8:47
[imitates crashing] Wow. Yeah. And I didn't notice on the way in, for whatever reason, so it felt like [laughs] like it occurred while we were on the ride.
• 8:55
[laughs] So now with the, uh- But that just how my brain works... with the reactor gone, maybe it's like, what, 198,000 years before we can- Ride through there?... ride through there or something.
• 9:03
[laughs] Come on, they're already going back to Chernobyl. Yeah, for sure. I- Just for limited, limited times. Yep. Three, uh, s- Half-life, schmaff-life, that's what I say Yeah. [laughs] Yeah.
• 9:16
Uh, on the way back, we, we did a White Castle stop. Yeah. I, I saw a post from Mr. Luns that he ate 10 of them little beasts. I was not there. Whew. Nah. No. Not for, not for 10. Oof. Fixer didn't happen. I had...
• 9:31
They have a seafood crab cake slider- Oh... that I had to attempt. And you lived? Yeah. Obviously. Well, I mean, you know, a crab cake's a crab cake. I mean, if you get a really good one, but for a dollar, sure. Right?
• 9:47
Give me a- Lay, lay it on me, whatever. Little fish sandwich. Nice. Cloaked in a good name. Nice. Yeah. [laughs] [laughs] Lot of crab in there. Yeah. I'm like, eh, eh. Lot of breading. Yeah. Oh, man.
• 10:01
And then I had to have a carry sack so I could have lunch. [laughs] And yeah. Hey, everybody, let's, uh, let's take a quick break and acknowledge, uh, the beer today. Ooh.
• 10:12
Tony made a stop on the way in and has a growler. Gr, gr. Gr. I, I got a cold, I can't growl. Growler. Growler of, uh, Black Husky's Dog- Dogfather... Dogfather. Ooh. Yeah. It's good stuff.
• 10:27
It's fine beer if you have not been to- Cheers, Tony.
• 10:29
[glasses clink] If you have not been to Black Husky and tried the Dogfather, or if they happen to be closed, just make your way a block north and head to Dino's, which also has it on tap, provided they're not sold out- Right...
• 10:41
'cause it sells very well 'Cause Tony drank it all. [laughs] Well, I, I may be guilty of that once or twice. Um, I highly recommend you check out Godfather, Dogfather at- Far, Fargan, Fargan, Frigan...
• 10:55
yeah, at Black Husky Brewing in beautiful River West, Wisconsin, because they brew a fantastic beer. All right. Since Tony brought the growler in, I've gotta give him a little bringing a growler in gift.
• 11:06
[laughs] Talk amongst yourselves. Well, now. Yeah. What should we talk about, JK? Oh, that it was just about holding back a damn sneeze. [laughs] Oh, that would be bad. The microphone there. Microphone check.
• 11:15
It's not gonna, it's not gonna sneak completely up on me. I've been placing it this way all day. Oh, no way. [sighs] You can't see this out there, so the podcast listeners- [laughs]... but it's gorgeous.
• 11:28
This is a, uh, this is a test thing for fatbike.com. Oh. So you're gonna have to mount this on... It's a, it's a growler grabber. Growlergrabber.com.
• 11:39
And it is exactly what it says it is, a large cage to grab your growler and, uh, attach it to your bike somewhere. Wouldn't maybe recommend putting it on an old Ralph, um, aluminum bike or something, but
• 11:56
it's kinda got a, uh, springy thingy that opens up. It's a- This is also a very odd growler in that it was, uh- [laughs]... well, it was a gift a very long time ago, so it does not meet the standard growler dimensions.
• 12:09
I'll bring, I'll bring some other growlers in and we'll do some growler testing with it, but- I, I like that. I'll bring it in next time mounted to my- Yeah, man. So, uh, Tony- Thank you, Gregory...
• 12:18
Tony's gonna do a little, little write-up on this for fatbike.com. See how you got roped into that? I did. [laughs] [laughs] Oh, damn, my keys are over there. I'm jingling them.
• 12:28
[laughs] But, but for the record, I do this write-up, I get to keep this, right? Oh yeah, for sure. Well, hell damn, man. That's the whole point. You're the only one that brings growlers.
• 12:34
[laughs] Well, they recommend post clamp installation. [laughs] Or, or on your bottle cage or whatever. Right, right. I mean, on a steel bike you're fine.
• 12:42
It's- It's, it's the thinner aluminum tubes I'd be wary of all that weight, but... And that crayon. Man. I'll bring my, uh, my, uh- Oh, sexy... normal, normal growler size growlers.
• 12:53
We'll see how it works in there too, and I'll put beer in them for you. Oh. Mm-hmm, since it's right across the street, mm-hmm. Mm, beer. Mm.
• 13:00
There's also many fine breweries in the Greater River West area that fill growlers. Company now does, and, uh- Filling Station... Gathering Place. Gathering Place. Yep. Rather go there than Filling Station.
• 13:14
[laughs] I would too. They... I personally feel that That Gathering Place doesn't make a bad beer, um, along with Black Husky. And what else we got? Of course, Lakefront fills growlers. Those guys are nice.
• 13:26
That's all within a stone's throw of the shop, folks. Yeah, yeah. Came in- You should come to this shop. Maybe on a Wednesday night and join us and bring beer. Yeah. [laughs] We're gonna, um,
• 13:36
we're gonna continue the Wednesday night thing, so you know. That's every other Wednesday, folks. Mm-hmm. Starting from today. What, what's that address again, Greg? Then just go r- just go two weeks forward.
• 13:47
[laughs] And if you had any questions, you can call. 717-727-2453. Bike. That's bike. Bike. Uh, yeah, the old shop here is located at 26 East Locust Street in River West, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
• 14:03
It's like a hyphenated city. Or a city in a city. [laughs] River West- Milwaukee. Milwaukee-River West. I don't know.
• 14:14
I have a, a friend who's always wanted to, uh, put on the Locust Street bridges you're, you're crossing over, what do they always have the sign in in Mash? It was like, "Welcome to the demilitarization zone."
• 14:25
[laughs] Yeah. Who gets to spray that as you're heading into River West. I'm like, "I like that." Sounds like a good idea. It does.
• 14:32
There's only, uh, basically two point, two points of entry to River West from east of the river to west of the river. Mm-hmm. And they're about a what, a mile apart? About that. Yep, so...
• 14:42
And two very nice bike trails along the, the river down there. Oh, they were... I was down there on, on, on yesterday. [laughs] On the, on the day before today, and it was, uh, in really good shape.
• 14:54
It's been walked and ridden in pretty nice. [laughs] A few little icy patches, so the studs were not a horrible thing, but- Nice... think you probably could have lived through it without studs. Mm.
• 15:07
Might have diggered, but- [laughs]... you'd be okay. Well, if you're paying attention, you're not gonna fall down probably. There you go. You're not having, like, eight Black Huskies. Uh, yeah, no.
• 15:16
[laughs] This was in the early daytime, not in the late nighttime. [laughs] Gotcha. Uh, you know, speaking of the shop, got some stuff in this week.
• 15:24
I know it was 10 below zero, but we got in- The spring collection [laughs]... the, the spring col- [laughs] and summer collection from Club Ride. We're doing our part to bring spring- Spring, yeah... to you.
• 15:34
Bring spring. Uh, there... Boy, there's a lot of stuff. I gotta get some more hangers. We got so much stuff, we need more hangers. Or- Oh...
• 15:41
or better yet, we should get rid of- Just- We should sell a bunch of that- Yeah... winter/fall/spring stuff, and, uh- Some 12 inch... you know, come in the shop. We got some kinda, we got some kinda sale going.
• 15:49
I don't know what it is, but... Mention you heard it on this podcast. And, uh, yeah. You brought beer. And there's beer in the fridge. [laughs] So, um, I... There's some nice stuff.
• 15:58
I'm pretty, pretty happy with what we got, and, uh, I would be wearing some of that m- I'm, I am wearing some of that right now- Yeah, yeah... as a matter of fact. [laughs] You appear to be wearing it now.
• 16:07
But this is winter. I'm still wearing the winter stuff. But, uh, yeah, we got another, um, Road Runner bag order.
• 16:14
You should probably scope out a couple of the new things we haven't had before on the Far- Made in America... the Far Gondola. Yeah. Made down there in Californ- I, is... Is that still America down there? I think it is.
• 16:24
That... Yeah, they haven't departed yet. Right. Well, I don't think they will, but maybe. You know? Be thinking about it. I'm kind of excit- well, I c- I'm not gonna talk about politics right now.
• 16:34
[laughs] Don't get me started. So, uh, got a couple handlebar bags we haven't had before, and some restocking on the Co-Pilots, which we like a lot, and... Nice. Uh, they do some nice stuff. I, uh...
• 16:46
Even playing around with backpacks again today. Their backpacks are real nice. Nice. Ah, I like bags. Nice. I like them nice backpacks. Mm.
• 16:56
You know, I'm gonna sh- I'm gonna throw a shout-out to my buddy Mike, who just moved to San Francisco, and I'm gonna send him a link to this podcast so he can listen to it, because he's a tall mixed martial arts fighter,
• 17:06
and he's planning a, like, a cross-state trip, and he's gonna do it on a quiver, and I suggested maybe you should look at yourself a nice Chumba. A Chumba. You're a big guy. I think you'd look really good on a Chumba.
• 17:25
Excellent. So... Thanks for the, thanks for the pimping. Yeah. Mike, when you hear this in, like, a week and a half, you should contact us, I know you're gonna be back in Wisconsin at some point, and come see this bike.
• 17:37
Bike. You'll love it. Chumba. Chumba. So we do have some rides coming up too. Who do you... Hey, throw some in there. Throw, throw- That's what I'm getting to... throw some in there.
• 17:47
When is, uh, when is this podcast to air? This airs on, uh, Friday. Then they should know- The 9th of March... they should come out on Saturday the 10th of March, if Friday's the 9th.
• 17:59
Or whatever the dates are, whatever it is today. And, and, and come to McBob's. 6th... It's the 8th is, no, the 9th is, uh- The 9th is Saturday... Saturday.
• 18:06
You should come to McBob's for Dave's Justin Timberline birthday party. Yeah. What time is that at? 7:00? 6:30? 9:00? What's- 9:00 I think is when we usually all show up at McBob's and have a Bloody Mary and some- Yeah.
• 18:20
It's all in the timing-... some tasty breakfast... of getting down to The downtown For the parade... which starts at noon, but- But they've issued a warning now...
• 18:29
we, we're at the end, like, towards the end of the route, so it's- Yeah. Well, they've issued- Probably... a warning that there's a, a Bucks game- Yeah [laughs]... a hockey game,
• 18:39
the parade, and one other event- Yeah, yeah... that is gonna make- Right at that episode, right? Yeah... downtown kind of chaotic, which is just a better excuse to ride your bike. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Ride your bike.
• 18:50
Ride your bike. [laughs] So that is, uh, on Facebook. I think it's called the second use of another picture ride [laughs] possibly. Yeah. [laughs] Yes. And we have T-shirts for this ride. Yes. That is awesome.
• 19:02
Have they arrived? Hopefully. Yeah. I don't know if they've arrived, but they have been ordered and promised, so. P- pound sign, shut up Ramsey. Yes. Hashtag. Pound sign. Hashtag. Pound sign. Shut up, Ramsey.
• 19:12
[laughs] [laughs] And then, even though it's not a bike ride, although I will be riding my bike there, we should support the greatest radio station in the world on Sunday for the Rockabilly Chili Cookoff.
• 19:24
Did you see my poster- Oh, yeah... in the window? I did. Or on the door? I did. In the, in the hallway? Yeah. Nice. That is a must stop at event. S- fundraiser for WMSE. For sure. Already got tickets.
• 19:34
The best radio station in, in the world. Me too. [laughs] There will be chili consumed, beers drank. Who's playing there? The Dick Satan Trio. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a little- Instrumental...
• 19:49
[growls] Instrumental Playboy Rock. Yes. It's Russ, uh- I'll, I'll let Dick down... what's Russ's last name? He does the Riverwest 24 every year.
• 19:56
I, uh- Uh, Russ, uh, Russ, I'm shouting out to you, and I can't remember your damn last name, and I'm sorry. Damn you.
• 20:03
Hey, for those of you not going on this, uh, second use of the picture day ride thing, Justin Timberlake's birthday/uh, parade route hooligananery. [laughs] Uh, it is also the weekend of the Fat Bike Birkie. Yes.
• 20:18
So, so you got that going for you if you're a fat biker and you like racing in the snow. It's looking like, at least as this forecast goes right now, it should be stellar conditions.
• 20:28
I'm predicting 20 degrees at race time.
• 20:31
It's been in the below zeros all week long, so I know they've got a good base, all nice and hard and solid, and I haven't seen any snow in the last week up there, so I'm sure the local folks can tell you more, but- It's gonna be gorgeous Where's it at?
• 20:45
Hayward. Hayward. Hayward. Cable to Hayward, or- Cable. That big Yeah. Hayward to Cable, Cable to Hayward. You know, that kind of thing. Do you know, do you know who's from Hayward? Jablome? Helen. [laughs] No.
• 20:57
Helen of Hayward. I don't know Helen of Hayward. You should Google that. You'll enjoy that story. Oh, boy. She was a prostitute. Oh, boy. [laughs] What, what's that, what's that, uh, hodag business up there?
• 21:08
The, the hodag, yeah, that's, uh, yeah, that's made up. Sure. I've seen pictures of hodags. Yeah. It's actually... There's really funny. That got so popular that it's even in a Scooby-Doo.
• 21:18
I think it's Hayward's high school mascot now. Yeah. In fact, that'd be even better. Yeah. Hodag. Scooby-Doo had a hodag? They had a hodag episode. [laughs] It's probably 'cause Casey Kasem loves hodags.
• 21:28
He's not in it anymore, though. Oh, man. You know, 'cause you know he's a robot. Although there's no reference to marijuana in that whole show. You just ask him.
• 21:36
He is certain that that Scooby and Shaggy were never on marijuana. I don't believe it. I don't believe it [laughs] for a freaking second. [laughs] He wants a Scooby Snack. So, yeah.
• 21:46
So it's probably too late since it's Friday if you're listening to this to, uh, enter the Birkie, although who knows? Maybe they didn't sell the thing out this time.
• 21:53
Maybe people are sick of riding up and down hills on their bikes in the snow. I kind of doubt it. [laughs] This is the 13th year? Boy, I don't think so. No. No, it can't be- Dan Dietrich's done them all, right?
• 22:05
Dan- Got to be about nine, eight or nine years... some- yeah, I think maybe you're right. Yeah, somewhere in there. I know he posted something that he's gonna be doing it. Maybe it is just nine.
• 22:12
So not as long as the Riverwest 24, 'cause you know- No... that's like- I don't think the Riverwest 24's been around longer than fat bikes. Probably, huh? [laughs] I mean, technically not, but since fat bike popularity.
• 22:23
Popularity contest. Um, another ride, another ride on the 17th. Oh, the real birthday of Justin Timberlake? Well, it [laughs] But it's also, like, a 500 person something, something interest at least. Is that the St.
• 22:39
Patrick's Day ride? Yeah. Something to do with, uh, the guys down the street. Is that, that, that Fixation place? I believe so. I'm pretty sure they got something going on. Oh. Oh. From the Lakefront Brewery.
• 22:48
From Lakefront... Okay. Yeah, yeah. From Lakefront Brewery to- Well, it's Fixation to Lakefront. I don't know where it goes after that. Yeah. Who cares? I'll just stay at Lakefront.
• 22:55
Or [laughs] go to Great Lakes Distillery or something. Oh, yeah. That'd be good too, and, you know- But that is on the actual St. Patrick's Day, which is a Sunday this year. That's what it should- It is. It is...
• 23:05
seems to me there's something on Saturday too, but I'm missing it, and I, I, I just don't know anymore. I just can't remember. Use the Googles. Uh, I tried that. Hey, guess what?
• 23:13
There's still fat bike racing in March, but guess what? No April fat bike races. Oh. At least not on the calendar.
• 23:19
So if you folks have something coming up on your fat bike race calendar, stick it up, stick it up there on fatbike.com, hey, and, uh, let folks know, 'cause fat bikes, you know what? They're an all-season bike. Mm-hmm.
• 23:31
And not a fad. I've been extolling the virtues- [laughs]... of them for nine to eight years now or more. Yeah. [laughs] I tell you what. I, I have not ridden my Ape all winter, though, and that's a fat bike.
• 23:42
Well, maybe it's 'cause you bought yourself a Jumbo. I was cleaning the chain today 'cause it got all sandy. [laughs] It got sandy in its nether regions, so. Mm, sand wedge. Yeah. It just gets all grunchy.
• 23:55
And you know what? I tell you, the, the more gears you got in the back, the less you want sand in there. I bet. Yeah. You got a eight- This is pretty close... you got a eight speed, you got plenty of room for sand. Yeah.
• 24:04
You got a 12 speed, not as much room for sand. [laughs] Not much room. That's pretty thin chain line there.
• 24:08
That's why you wanna, you wanna run your Rock N Roll Lube like I normally would have, but I had some wetter lube on there, and I'm like, "Doh." Shoulda, shoulda- Gotta go with Rock N Roll...
• 24:18
shoulda cleaned it off and rock n rolled that right up, but, uh, it's back. It's back now. [laughs] It's a pretty fantastic lube, all you listeners out there. Rock N Roll, baby. Got to go with the Rock N Roll.
• 24:26
And you know, thank goodness that the- Parts of the 12-speed GX or NX, and you know, the stuff that works fine and you're not racing, it's not that expensive anymore, so
• 24:37
not saying go out and wreck your stuff, but- Well, you do... you don't have to be worried about blowing up a $250 derailleur and a $400 cassette. You can- Not to mention $100 chain back then, right?
• 24:48
Yeah, now they're more, like 35 bucks. Yeah. It's... How much? I got one right here. What the- Ooh. J-... $33 retail for a 12-speed GX train. Chain, chain. Not bad. Does that... I, I, I'm ignorant to the 12-speed.
• 25:03
Does that fit on a standard 10-speed spindle, or? It doesn't, except for one exception- Oh... which is the NX, uh, version, which is their only e-bike compatible 12-speed. Oh. And it works on any,
• 25:17
uh, current SRAM, Shimano, 8, 9, 10, 11 speed. Some of the older, uh, ones were only 10 speed. Okay... so they didn't have that extra millimeter and a half or whatever it is.
• 25:29
The newest ones from the last five or more years work fine with this new 11-speed. The one thing you don't get is you're an 11 to 50 range instead of a 10 to 50 range. 10 to 50, okay.
• 25:40
And I tell you what, that one tooth makes some difference on the, on your speedy top end. On that. That said, this is a fat bike and you're not- Right... going that fast anyway, so.
• 25:48
Yeah, you brought up e-bikes and that brings into the whole, you know, Buell is making two new e-bikes. I thought they'd died- Buell... after Harley killed them twice. Well, I know.
• 25:58
But now they've come out with an e-motorcycle which has a... Uh, I was reading on it briefly this week. It has a, uh, rear hub motor on a motorcycle,
• 26:10
which is pretty crazy when you think about it, 'cause it changes all the weight distribution. No more chain, no more belt, no more shaft. Um- Lots of batteries, though...
• 26:19
all, all your weight's in the back, and then you can use the frame for the batteries. Right, right. Um, and then they've got a pretty serious, uh, e-mountain bike, um, that appears to be it's the same, uh...
• 26:30
The guy that's doing e-Formula 1 is helping build it with Buell. That's not... Is it 15,000 bucks or something in that? It's, uh... No, it's actually
• 26:38
$3,400 for the bike with dual batteries that they claim will do 100 miles. Wow. That's pretty price competitive. I mean, considering most of them do 30 to 40 miles. Right, right.
• 26:53
Hey, speaking of things that can go 60 miles plus with batteries on, we couldn't talk about it last show. Oh, but we can now. [laughs] The, the Big Easy, folks, is out. It's Surly's,
• 27:03
uh, car-light or car-free e-bike based on the Big Dummy. And two of the three people in this room have ridden that bike. Oh my gosh. It's really nice. It's incredible. [laughs] It's really nice. I've, I've ridden...
• 27:16
As a guy that's ridden a bunch of e-bikes- [laughs]...
• 27:18
and a bunch of e-cargo bikes, they have definitely dialed in a serious e-cargo bike, especially the, the, uh, the take off from a dead stop, how fast that e-assist kicks in.
• 27:32
You can be in almost any gear and pedal a quarter of a crank and that thing kicks in instantly. It's beautiful. Yeah. I was impressed. We, with, with Tony on the back- 20 miles [laughs] an hour...
• 27:43
20 miles an hour, no problem. I mean, you know- Was it nine degrees with a wind chill below? Yeah, it was cold. [laughs] It was, it was cold.
• 27:48
[laughs] And you know, that said, that bike had been sitting in the Surly demo van all night long. Yep.
• 27:53
The battery had been sitting all night long, and if you know batteries, lithium ion batteries do not like- They don't like cold... cold weather. Uh, but it's still, uh, no worries.
• 28:02
I think if you kept it in your pocket, you know- Would've been better... and kept it warm. It was a blast. Yeah. Hard to believe. It didn't even feel like a cargo bike. I, it...
• 28:12
I've had a Big Dummy, I've had Xtracycles, and I thought it felt a lot like a Big Dummy. I haven't ridden a Big Dummy in a long time. Well, I did...
• 28:21
One thing that I didn't, didn't actually notice when riding it, but we should have paid more attention to is it's got a damping headset on it, so it takes a little bit of the shock in the front out. Yeah.
• 28:32
It's not a shocked absorber, but it, it, it damps the, the road hazards and noise and banging around and- I, I have not ridden a Big Dummy in a while, but I have ridden a number of the extended Xtracycle cargo bikes that are e-assist, and you know, they might have one-upped 'em on this.
• 28:52
I always thought that Xtracycles were a little whippy. This did not have any whippiness in it- Yeah, no... at all. Even the Bosch mid-drive, which is this supposedly very similar drive trains,
• 29:02
this was [laughs] really sweet. Sweet. Yeah, it's a Bosch, it's a Bosch system. They're both Boschs, yeah. It may be Bosch, uh, massaged. Maybe. Maybe. Massage. [laughs] Mike, have you, uh...
• 29:15
JK, ever, uh, uh, re- uh, re- uh- Ebudebudebudebudebude... have, uh, have you ever, have you ever ridden an, a electric bike? A r- a retric bike? A retric bike. [laughs] Uh, that's all, folks. No. [laughs] Uh,
• 29:30
not recently. I did in... Oh, yi, yi, yi, yi. Like 2000. Wow. I remember- Wow. Like... Yeah. Well, no, no. This was weird. That's wet acid days. Uh, Hall... Yeah, yeah, yeah. What, uh, [laughs] uh, Hall Chevrolet
• 29:48
out by Mayfair? Yeah, yeah. They were, like the... I can't remember the name of the damn company, but it was like electric bike. But oh my Lord, heavy. Beastly. Oh. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And we were...
• 30:02
Yeah, 'cause we were doing the Great Damn Bike Tour. Best Damn Bike Tour? Something like that, yeah. Yeah. Damn it. And, uh, but with the cheater bike. I mean, 'cause it was essentially a moped. Oh.
• 30:14
Except when it broke down, and one did. And so [laughs] this guy- Oh, yeah... had to hump it. [laughs] I mean, we only did one leg of it, but- Well, it still had pedals then. Oh, yeah. Right, huh?
• 30:26
But you're dragging- Six speed... Yeah, you're just, yeah, you're just dragging a boulder the whole damn day. I got an electric bike over at the other building still. I should bring that thing over here. Brand new.
• 30:35
A fat bike? Yeah. Is it- Dual electric? I can't remember No, it has that Bafang 8Fang, 8Fa, 8 something. What do you call that hub on the back? Oh, really, it's got the Bafang rear hub. Oh, yeah.
• 30:47
That's, that's a good hub. Yeah, it, it rides well. Yeah. Which I, I threw some miles on it and haven't gotten rid of it yet, so- You can-... bring it over here and sell it... you can volt that from, like...
• 30:56
I'm gonna get nerdy now, from, like, 36 to 72 amp, and that thing'll just cream. Voltage? Or volt. Volt. Yeah, amps. Yeah, 36 volt, uh- Hey, hey, amps ain't gonna make it go no faster... no. Well, it's gonna go further.
• 31:06
[laughs] That's how that works. That's, you know, ohms. Ohm. Ohm. Uh, yeah, I, I- Good band, Ohm. Ohm. I keep forgetting about it- Oh, shoot, absolutely...
• 31:16
and I keep thinking I should probably get rid of it, 'cause it's almost new and it's not, you know, an inexpensive thing still, so. Some... It's a fat bike too, though. Yeah. I saw it once in the shop.
• 31:26
I'll bring it over here as soon as I get all ambitious and whatnot. Just gotta get some of this other stuff outta here. Come and buy some stuff so I can put more stuff in here. I like stuff. That's what I said. Yes.
• 31:39
Uh- I noticed a mention on the MKE BKE- Of?... of Everyday Cycles. Oh, right on. And it just says, "So"- Those guys are jackasses... well, who knows the story behind this new Milwaukee bike retailer?
• 31:53
Uh- That's the question. I do. I certainly do not. Ding. Everyday Cycles- [laughs]... gear for blah, blah, blah. So who's... I don't know S-... Do I know, do I know Steve? Did he start- I don't know. I don't know...
• 32:02
when did that just come in? That just come in today? Nope. Nope. I don't know. Well- I just rolled by it, uh- How did I miss that? I should be more MKE BKE.
• 32:12
I sh- I would've come if this- There's too many Facebook groups to pay attention to- I know... frankly. I don't know this gentleman, either. Well- Well, here's the- Sh- shout out to him, then...
• 32:20
here's an idea- Uh, it was Sunday afternoon. Here's an idea, Steve. Stop by the shop and we'll sh- tell you what's up. [laughs] Yeah. I mean- We'll show you cool-... don't, don't take it on heresy from other people.
• 32:29
[laughs] We'll show you cool American-made products. Yeah, you know, I mean, we're doing what we do. You stop in and see if that's for you or for someone else, because we're not- Yeah... we're not for everyone.
• 32:39
It doesn't seem accusatory. It's just like, "Hey, hey." What is the story? Well, I would just- Well, here's the story. Yeah. Yeah. Stop in, for crying out loud. It's a- Come say hi. We'd like to see you...
• 32:47
got a door on the front of it and you open it up and you walk right the hell on in. And we're kinda friendly. I, I mean, when we're open. Don't do that when we're closed. Yeah. Right? Please. We have cameras and stuff.
• 32:54
These guard dogs and whatnot will get all up on you. Oh. Ar, ar, ar. Guard dog fathers. Oh, yeah. Guard dog fathers. [laughs] Nice. Oh. Guard dog father. We might just have to go over to Black Husky for another one. Oh.
• 33:08
Maybe. Oh. All righty. Anybody got any closing thoughts before we, uh, go get another dog father? I, uh, I think everyone should come out to, uh, McBob's, enjoy the fun on Saturday.
• 33:21
That's probably the most funnest thing coming up on Saturday. It is a really good time. Yeah. It's... And then we all, en masse, ride down North Avenue. People cheer us.
• 33:30
It's just really fun at, you know, 11 o'clock in the morning to be riding down North Avenue as a group of 10 to 15 people, and people are like, "What are y'all doing?" Like, "Going to the parade."
• 33:40
There may be an impromptu cyclocross. There could be. Yeah. [laughs] Maybe a derby. There has been in the past. Maybe a derby. For sure. Yep. All right, Mike? Yes, it's a back and forth, forth and back.
• 33:52
Drive in where you go to. Rockabilly Chili the next day. And man, that's gonna be- Tell them Everyday Cycle's podcast sent you. Yeah. Yeah, right. Exactly. And Tritonics at Uptowner right after. At, yeah.
• 34:04
I was just like- And Ohm... "Oh, yeah, on my flight plan back home. Uh-huh." Yeah, right back there. Be a lot going on that day. Dicka dicka ding. Even, uh, Mr.
• 34:11
James, our ape-owning fat bike buddy, has a gig going at the, uh, Up and, Up and Under. And Under. Yeah. Oh, that also- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah... Uptowner night. Yeah, that night. Yeah. With, uh, yeah, with- All right...
• 34:24
all them and all those cats... Milwaukee's got some cool stuff going on, folks. If you get over this way, give us a shout and we will let you know what's up the day you show up. Yeah.
• 34:32
We will un- [laughs] yeah, so you don't have to untangle the- Right... it's like word salad. Right. I'm just kidding. [laughs] All right, y'all. Next time. See you in a couple of weeks. Later. The sooner, I hope.
• 34:45
