- 0:01Speaker 1: Cal Poly is in session. Students swarm through campus and
- 0:04Speaker 1: file in and out of classes. You're thinking about the
- 0:06Speaker 1: chapter reading they have tonight, their next class, their new dorm,
- 0:08Speaker 1: their senior project, how to get to the gym, what's.
- 0:10Speaker 2: For dinner tonight? Where's in yours bathroom?
- 0:13Speaker 1: Kate and I know things can get a bit chaotic
- 0:15Speaker 1: as a student navigating the ins and outs of college life.
- 0:18Speaker 3: At cal Poly. We focus on learning by doing, but
- 0:21Speaker 3: sometimes you don't know what to do well. Emma and
- 0:24Speaker 3: I are here to answer your who, what, when, where, why?
- 0:27Speaker 3: And how's here? On CP one oh one Learned by Listening,
- 0:30Speaker 3: presented by KCPR ninety one point three.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Hi Mustang, I'm Emma Hughes, a third year English student, and.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I'm Kate Lopensk, a third year journalism student here at
- 0:39Speaker 3: cal Poly, and we're here to share our tell all
- 0:41Speaker 3: guide on how to survive and thrive at cal Poly
- 0:44Speaker 3: San Luis Obispo.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So grab a notebook. You may want to write this down.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Welcome to CP one oh one, How to Dine on Campus.
- 1:00Speaker 3: You've been here for a couple weeks now, or maybe
- 1:02Speaker 3: even a few years, and you know how cal a
- 1:04Speaker 3: campus can be when.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It all becomes a bit much, the last thing you
- 1:07Speaker 1: want to do is worry about where and what you're
- 1:09Speaker 1: going to eat. That's why today we are looking into
- 1:11Speaker 1: all the food options on campus.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Knowing where campus dining locations are, what options you can
- 1:17Speaker 3: choose from, and how accessible it is to you is
- 1:19Speaker 3: vital to survive as a college student. Take it from me,
- 1:23Speaker 3: I'm like a worst case scenario. I'm dairy free and
- 1:25Speaker 3: I'm red meat free. So dining as a freshman was
- 1:29Speaker 3: a bit challenging.
- 1:30Speaker 2: But look at me. I'm still here today.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I don't have dietary restrictions, but I'm a picky eater,
- 1:35Speaker 1: so I'm a survivor too. As two students who once
- 1:39Speaker 1: relied solely on campus dining, we know a thing or
- 1:41Speaker 1: two about this topic.
- 1:43Speaker 3: First things first, let's talk about what food is actually
- 1:46Speaker 3: on campus, starting with the infamous Vista Grande Dining complex. Yeah,
- 1:52Speaker 3: so vegs, as we like to call it here, that's
- 1:54Speaker 3: what the cool kids call it.
- 1:55Speaker 2: VEG. Well, VEG or VG's do you say it with
- 1:59Speaker 2: an S or not?
- 2:01Speaker 3: I don't you do. We've had this debate before. I mean,
- 2:04Speaker 3: I think it's just a matter of opinion. You can
- 2:07Speaker 3: say whatever you want, but I do laugh at Emma
- 2:09Speaker 3: for putting an apostrophe es yes, behind every single place here.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It's funny. It just makes more sense.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Anyways, VG's is the main dining complex here on campus
- 2:19Speaker 1: and it's open from seven am to nine pm.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Okay, so let's do a little walk through tour. So
- 2:25Speaker 3: you're going to the bottom floor area of vg So
- 2:29Speaker 3: there you can find the market, John, the juice, and
- 2:33Speaker 3: the deli. So the market has grab and go pre
- 2:37Speaker 3: made things. Yes, you can get wishes, purfees.
- 2:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:42Speaker 1: There's even sushi now, which like, I don't know how
- 2:45Speaker 1: trustworthy it is, but okay, I just I have to.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Say I have had the sushi before and I didn't
- 2:51Speaker 3: get sick.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I know my parents came to visit me when I
- 2:55Speaker 1: was a first year, and they love sushi and they
- 2:58Speaker 1: use my dining collar Spicy, and I was like, we
- 3:00Speaker 1: have all of Sanda's obispo to go get food and
- 3:04Speaker 1: you're choosing to eat here.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But fun they survived.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, well, okay, so that's the market and then Jamba
- 3:11Speaker 3: your typical options for that bowls, smoothies.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Jama was clutched for me.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I would frequently order smoothie and just drink it all
- 3:21Speaker 1: day long, all the time.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Loved Jamba.
- 3:24Speaker 1: They also have bowls, so they had fresh fruit and
- 3:28Speaker 1: I love Jamba.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and then there's the deli. It's just make your
- 3:33Speaker 3: own sandwiches. You can pick one that's already on the menu,
- 3:37Speaker 3: or you can customize your own.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yes, it's kind of like a subway except not, which
- 3:42Speaker 1: we'll get into our love for subway later.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:45Speaker 1: The next thing on our list for VG's is the
- 3:47Speaker 1: Vista Grunde Express. This has breakfast served from seven to
- 3:50Speaker 1: ten thirty am, lunch from eleven am to three thirty pm,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and dinner from four pm to nine pm. This Visita
- 3:56Speaker 1: Grunde Express was not here when we were freshmen, and no,
- 4:01Speaker 1: this is like so Kate and I did a little
- 4:03Speaker 1: walk through tour ourselves of Vista Grande and we saw.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It and we were shocked. We were appalled.
- 4:10Speaker 3: We were because there was nothing like this for us.
- 4:14Speaker 3: It just seems so easy. You can make your own waffles,
- 4:17Speaker 3: just grab a bowl of cereal, some toast with peanut butter.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I was one of those.
- 4:22Speaker 3: College students that did sneak a toaster into my room
- 4:25Speaker 3: because I would literally eat toast for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,
- 4:29Speaker 3: whatever I could do. So them having this is very
- 4:32Speaker 3: convenient and you're not breaking any rules.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a one swipe and then buffet free
- 4:39Speaker 1: for all.
- 4:39Speaker 2: You can get whatever you want.
- 4:40Speaker 1: They have lovely little takeout containers for you, so you
- 4:43Speaker 1: can literally take it on the go.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, so great option. So the next one is brunch.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I know that Emma has something to say about brunch.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I loved brunch they had when we were freshmen.
- 4:56Speaker 1: They had burritos, breakfast burritos that were life saver for me.
- 5:00Speaker 2: They were so good.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I didn't even really eat breakfast, but the breakfast burrito
- 5:06Speaker 1: was like constant lunch and dinner every day, all day
- 5:09Speaker 1: I was eating there. But now they don't have the
- 5:12Speaker 1: breakfast burrito, but they still have all the good things
- 5:14Speaker 1: that go inside, just they have it now as the bowl,
- 5:18Speaker 1: so they definitely still have all the necessary options that brunch.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And they even have deluxe pancake plates now, which again
- 5:26Speaker 1: not a thing when we were freshmen. No, okay, so
- 5:29Speaker 1: next is Balance Cafe. We'll get more specific about this
- 5:32Speaker 1: place later on in the episode. But if you have
- 5:35Speaker 1: a lot of dietary restrictions. This is where you go.
- 5:38Speaker 1: They put a lot of emphasis and a lot of
- 5:40Speaker 1: care into making sure that there's no cross contamination and
- 5:44Speaker 1: that all of their options are allergen friendly. Balance is
- 5:47Speaker 1: a good go to for like little things, so I
- 5:50Speaker 1: would definitely recommend checking that out. Next on our list
- 5:53Speaker 1: is Hearth, which is a good old hearty pizza place.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Pizza. I think you can get pasta there too.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Even they even have some ub sandwiches, so kind of
- 6:01Speaker 1: got all the things you need.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Moving on, let's go to Streets. Now.
- 6:06Speaker 3: This is a super cool option because now they have
- 6:08Speaker 3: make your own.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Like burrito bowls and stuff like that. Yes, kind of Chipotle.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Vibes definitely, definitely, and it's like all Mexican food so good.
- 6:18Speaker 1: They have I think takitos, tacos and bowls and burritos
- 6:23Speaker 1: and it's lifesaver, you know me breakfast burrito. I also
- 6:27Speaker 1: love Streets burritos.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I was all for it.
- 6:30Speaker 3: It was not my favor obviously because they put cheese
- 6:32Speaker 3: on everything, so.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Fair enough if you're I mean.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Now, with the build your own bowl option, I feel
- 6:38Speaker 3: like that's more customizable for people with allergies.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Now we have noodles, which, as it sounds, pasta place
- 6:46Speaker 1: all your go to regular spaghetti, meatballs, even garlic bread,
- 6:50Speaker 1: classic pasta place.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Can't go wrong. Okay, now we have mingle and nash again.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Kind of sad that we didn't have this freshman year
- 7:00Speaker 3: because I would have had a piece of pea bread
- 7:03Speaker 3: with hummus probably every single day.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 1: This food option again with the choose your own You
- 7:10Speaker 1: get your peeda bread and you get to choose like
- 7:12Speaker 1: five toppings and just you get it, just eat, chow down.
- 7:17Speaker 1: It's a great option for you. Yeah, nice and eazy. Okay,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk about one.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Of our favorites, our favorite sweet Bar.
- 7:26Speaker 1: This is a great place for just a little sweet
- 7:29Speaker 1: tree at the end of the night, during the day,
- 7:31Speaker 1: whenever you need a little pick me up, head to
- 7:34Speaker 1: the Sweet Bar. You can get cookies, gelato, like all
- 7:38Speaker 1: the good things at the sweet Bar. I just remember
- 7:42Speaker 1: every single night, just my roommate and I would just
- 7:46Speaker 1: look at our grip hub.
- 7:47Speaker 2: We just look at each other. Should we get cookies? Yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 2: let's get cookies. Yes.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And when they give you too, they do like you
- 7:54Speaker 1: don't have an option to bite one and they give
- 7:55Speaker 1: you two, so it's you just have to.
- 7:58Speaker 2: They were so good and we would heat them up.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Yes, and it's really good by extra bringing back to
- 8:03Speaker 1: the dorm. Have them the next day. Love the Sweet
- 8:06Speaker 1: Bar and they.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Have vegan chocolate chip cookies that aren't bad at all. Yes,
- 8:11Speaker 3: so I mean I'm brave and I eat the real deal,
- 8:16Speaker 3: but the vegan ones not bad at all.
- 8:18Speaker 1: One of our last things that isn't technically in Beige's
- 8:21Speaker 1: but it's just across the street is Scout Coffee.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Such a lifesaver. This was new when we were freshmen.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Now she's had her moment, she's been here for a minute.
- 8:31Speaker 2: But this was so.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Clutch because I just remember having my macha with oat
- 8:37Speaker 3: milk would get me through the morning.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, Scout, Like they also had pastries and stuff it.
- 8:43Speaker 1: It was a hot spot and the inside is so cute,
- 8:46Speaker 1: like it's it gives that college vibe of like even
- 8:50Speaker 1: if you want to go study, if you're not necessarily
- 8:52Speaker 1: there for the food, it's still a great location to
- 8:54Speaker 1: check out. Another great location to check out besides Fiji's
- 8:58Speaker 1: that's a little more accessible when you're on campus is
- 9:01Speaker 1: the Campus Market. There's great outdoor seating, and it's easy
- 9:05Speaker 1: to shop for like a quick like drink or like
- 9:08Speaker 1: grabbing go food items, so definitely very accessible when you're
- 9:12Speaker 1: on the go.
- 9:13Speaker 3: This is definitely one of my go tos when I
- 9:16Speaker 3: happen to be on campus for lunch. But you just
- 9:18Speaker 3: have to remember that it's only open during weekdays. Yes,
- 9:21Speaker 3: that's a crucial piece of information because I remember walking
- 9:25Speaker 3: from my dorm. I was excited to have like a
- 9:29Speaker 3: decent option and then it's closed, so sad. So just
- 9:35Speaker 3: got to keep that in mind. But in there you
- 9:38Speaker 3: have the make your own salad bar. I live for
- 9:41Speaker 3: a make your own salad bar, yes, so always great option.
- 9:45Speaker 3: They also have the grill too, you can just get
- 9:47Speaker 3: like chicken, tenders, burger, whatever you want, and they also
- 9:50Speaker 3: have a Starbucks in there as well.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Also nearby to the campus market is the subway, which
- 9:55Speaker 1: is open twenty four hours, and you know the drill
- 9:58Speaker 1: with subway, very easy, very good option for literally anytime
- 10:04Speaker 1: of the day between classes. It's right next to lawns too,
- 10:07Speaker 1: so you can literally take your sub and go lay
- 10:11Speaker 1: out on a lawn and like you and your foot
- 10:13Speaker 1: long just chill in.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I love that that's funny.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Yeah, you can always count on seeing someone at subway
- 10:22Speaker 3: every hour of the day or night.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And it also subway has a certain smell like that
- 10:27Speaker 1: surrounds it too, the bread smell.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I just like, I won't even be hungry and I'll
- 10:32Speaker 3: be walking by subway and It'll just hit me.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yes, I'll be like on my way to class in
- 10:36Speaker 1: the architecture building and like I smell it.
- 10:38Speaker 2: I'm just like, oh, how much I do I have
- 10:41Speaker 2: before class? Can I go to subway? Okay?
- 10:44Speaker 3: So next now we have one that's very near and
- 10:46Speaker 3: dear to my heart, hell Shack. They do a mean
- 10:49Speaker 3: awse e bowl here. I do like it. I didn't
- 10:52Speaker 3: think I would like it as much as the shake
- 10:54Speaker 3: Smart ones. We'll go into my obsession with Shakesmart and
- 10:56Speaker 3: a little bit here. But it's really good that you
- 11:00Speaker 3: sunflower butter instead of peanut butter. Oh, surprisingly really good.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And they use fresh fruit, so this is a great option.
- 11:06Speaker 3: They sell it in like a small and a large size,
- 11:09Speaker 3: so however hungry you are, there's something for you, and
- 11:11Speaker 3: they have like wraps and other options.
- 11:14Speaker 1: They have juices, a great little pop up location to
- 11:18Speaker 1: stop buy.
- 11:19Speaker 3: You can find health Shack right next to the library.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I know that the library is not open right now,
- 11:25Speaker 3: but health Shack hasn't moved, so you can find it there.
- 11:28Speaker 1: One of our last locations in the Campus Market neighborhood
- 11:31Speaker 1: is SQL Tea. This one is a bit elusive and
- 11:35Speaker 1: it kind of pops up everywhere. We've seen it at
- 11:37Speaker 1: Campus Market, We've seen it on Dexter Lawn, We've seen
- 11:40Speaker 1: it outside Vegs. So keep on the lookout for SQL Tea.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Because it's so good. It's so good. It's a nice
- 11:47Speaker 2: little boba. It's a good boba too.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I'm from the Bay Area, so I am very picky
- 11:54Speaker 3: about my boba.
- 11:55Speaker 2: She's qualifying. Yeah, I would like to say so.
- 11:57Speaker 3: And SEQL takes the cake as far as bobo options go.
- 12:03Speaker 1: In San Luis Obispo, it's another thing like Sweet Bar,
- 12:05Speaker 1: where if you're just craving like that little sweet pick
- 12:08Speaker 1: me up, go to sequl Tea. Be like find it,
- 12:12Speaker 1: go there, get your tea.
- 12:14Speaker 2: You deserve it. You deserve it, Okay.
- 12:17Speaker 3: So the next central location for food is the UU Plaza,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and there's a lot of fun options in here. And
- 12:25Speaker 3: my favorite part about the UU is that there's a
- 12:27Speaker 3: bowling alley in it.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Yes, so the food next to the bowling alley, it
- 12:32Speaker 1: has this like whole ambiance of like, let's hang out,
- 12:35Speaker 1: let's sit down, let's talk. It's definitely more of a
- 12:37Speaker 1: restaurant feel than kind of everywhere else on campus.
- 12:42Speaker 3: So here you can find Mustang Station, which is pizza
- 12:45Speaker 3: and wings. So the perfect partner for a bowling session.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yes, and it's definitely when you compare it to Hearth,
- 12:53Speaker 1: it's definitely better food, better pizza, more authentic real, Like
- 12:59Speaker 1: this is a good pizza place.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I won't call it authentic, it's more American authentic.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean compared to Heart when it's like the
- 13:07Speaker 1: frozen dough that they're bringing out, like.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's giving like.
- 13:13Speaker 3: National pizza chain vibes, but not in a horrible way.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 1: And like you're a college student who's hungry for pizzas,
- 13:21Speaker 1: that is gonna work, okay.
- 13:23Speaker 2: And then we have red Radish. Yes, I love a
- 13:26Speaker 2: red Radish. No, I love red Radish too.
- 13:29Speaker 1: It's again it's that make your own go down the line,
- 13:33Speaker 1: choose what you want ingredients. So I love that as
- 13:35Speaker 1: a picky eater. Resident picky eater here love being able
- 13:38Speaker 1: to choose my own food.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Do you remember your order at all?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I know, back, I just love I love
- 13:48Speaker 3: their balsamic vinaigrette. So and also pro tip, get the
- 13:53Speaker 3: bread and chicken instead of the grilled chicken.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Oh m hm.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Okay, I'm about to change drop a massive hot tape.
- 14:00Speaker 1: But okay, I do not like salad dressing.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Okay, okay, that's about I didn't like it when I
- 14:07Speaker 3: was a kid.
- 14:08Speaker 2: So what do you do?
- 14:09Speaker 1: I lemon gees. Okay, I am not a salad dressing person.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I like to think it's because I'm healthy, but in actuality,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I'm just so picky that I like, won't do it.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I have no faith in salad dressing. I get a
- 14:22Speaker 1: smell of it and I'm like, it's not for me. No,
- 14:24Speaker 1: that's fair, especially since you're more of a picky eater. Yes,
- 14:27Speaker 1: that's why red Radish I can say no, no sauce, no, no,
- 14:32Speaker 1: no dressing please. So yeah, so super customizabile, good option. Yes,
- 14:37Speaker 1: there's also a market in the UU that we want
- 14:41Speaker 1: to make you aware of, and this one's definitely a
- 14:44Speaker 1: smaller market compared to the other two we've talked about,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but it's in a central location and if you're already
- 14:50Speaker 1: in the UU, if you're baby studying upstairs and you
- 14:53Speaker 1: need a little snack, you can head to the market
- 14:55Speaker 1: and just pick up your favorite treat.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, this just has chips, granola bars.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Again this so she makes a reappearance here already pre
- 15:02Speaker 3: made salads all the go to's okay, And then there's
- 15:05Speaker 3: another Starbucks. This is a very popular location. There's always
- 15:09Speaker 3: such a long line, so my pro tip is to
- 15:11Speaker 3: always plan ahead when you're getting Starbucks.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yes, Starbucks is definitely one that you want to use
- 15:17Speaker 1: the grub hub app for because, like I remember, I've
- 15:20Speaker 1: had hour long waits before, so I would wake up
- 15:23Speaker 1: like at eight am for a ten am class so
- 15:26Speaker 1: that I could order my Starbucks and pick it up
- 15:28Speaker 1: on the way to class. Yeah, I am personally more
- 15:30Speaker 1: of a scout girl because that just it just has
- 15:34Speaker 1: more of what I want. And I just always found
- 15:37Speaker 1: it unreasonable because the line was so long. But I
- 15:40Speaker 1: will always go for that like egg white turkey bacon,
- 15:43Speaker 1: English muffin situation sandwich they have going there, Like it's good.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I like it. Love Starbucks for breakfast.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Our last location in the UU is shake Smart, which
- 15:54Speaker 1: we know is kid's favorite.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Yes, if you gave me the time, I could talk
- 15:59Speaker 3: about my love for Shakesmart for hours.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:03Speaker 3: So there's only one correct way to do this. You
- 16:07Speaker 3: have to get what are they called the scooped bowls. Yes,
- 16:11Speaker 3: not the blended bowls. You get the raw peabe Okay,
- 16:15Speaker 3: it is the only one that you get.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It's so good. It comes with.
- 16:21Speaker 3: So like the osai e basse bananas, peanut butter, chocolate chips,
- 16:25Speaker 3: and then in a golfy drizzle. But I customize it. Okay,
- 16:30Speaker 3: listen very carefully. This is going to save you.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:33Speaker 3: So it depends on bananas for me, you know, it
- 16:37Speaker 3: depends on the day. For me, bananas can either be
- 16:39Speaker 3: delicious or like make me want to vomit. Okay, So
- 16:42Speaker 3: sometimes I'll sub bananas from blueberries. Okay, so good, get
- 16:48Speaker 3: extra peanut butter, delicious, no agafite drizzle.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's my order, and I would eat.
- 16:55Speaker 2: This so many times a week. Yeah. Yeah, that's what
- 16:59Speaker 2: got me through freshman year. Yeah.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And for shake Smart, you order outside at their little
- 17:06Speaker 1: is it like a kiosk what you can call it? Yes, kiosk,
- 17:10Speaker 1: And I will always see a line always people swarming,
- 17:14Speaker 1: but they move fast, they get your order. It's like,
- 17:18Speaker 1: I feel like it's a social spot even though there's
- 17:20Speaker 1: like no real seating, Like everyone's there and like it's
- 17:24Speaker 1: right next to the wreck. So it's a great location
- 17:26Speaker 1: to get like protein shake, you know, hit the gym,
- 17:30Speaker 1: do your thing.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I have a pro tip for you. Are you ready?
- 17:33Speaker 2: I'm so ready.
- 17:34Speaker 3: You can order Shakesmart on your phone online so you
- 17:37Speaker 3: don't have to wait for the kiosk.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Okay, I didn't know this.
- 17:40Speaker 3: So you go to the Shakesmart website and you click
- 17:43Speaker 3: your location for us. It's cal poly obviously, and you
- 17:47Speaker 3: can customize your order and order on your phone and
- 17:50Speaker 3: then you just pay up front like you normally do.
- 17:52Speaker 3: But that way you can skip the kiosk line and
- 17:54Speaker 3: you can just hop straight into the payment line.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Gorgeous. M hm. Love to see it. Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Also, this is like kind of irrelevant to food. But
- 18:03Speaker 1: the playlist that they play, like the music at the
- 18:06Speaker 1: Shakesmart I love. I'll be walking a class, doing my
- 18:10Speaker 1: little walky walk and I just listened to the music
- 18:12Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, okay, Shakesmart. The other day they
- 18:15Speaker 1: were playing Determinate from Lemonade Mouth for all my Disney
- 18:20Speaker 1: fanatics out there, and I literally hopped on the group
- 18:23Speaker 1: chat with all my girlies and was like, guys, you'll
- 18:25Speaker 1: never believe it, so just keep that in mind.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Again. The ambiance of Shakesmart is beautiful.
- 18:31Speaker 3: So different from the VG playlist, which is the most
- 18:34Speaker 3: random thing I've ever heard in my entire life. It
- 18:37Speaker 3: hasn't changed since when we were freshman either.
- 18:40Speaker 1: No, always, so we want to know who's on ogs.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Hit us to please hit us up, let us know.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Another great spot for getting food on campus is the
- 18:51Speaker 1: food trucks that they kind of move around. They move
- 18:54Speaker 1: to you wherever you are, Like, there's always a food
- 18:57Speaker 1: truck nearby and they are surprise so good.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 3: So they're either in the pack circle or on Motlawn,
- 19:05Speaker 3: so wherever you're at. This is great for when you're
- 19:08Speaker 3: living in the dorms and you just want to grab
- 19:11Speaker 3: something really easy at night, It'll be right there.
- 19:14Speaker 2: The first track we want to mention is plant Ivy.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I love Plant Ivy, the pretzel buns. I have never
- 19:21Speaker 2: been to Plant Ivy. We should go? Yes, can we go? Yes?
- 19:25Speaker 3: I'd be so down actually, like they have the most
- 19:29Speaker 3: delicious plant based burgers ever. I get the one with
- 19:34Speaker 3: the apples on it, and they also have like vecan
- 19:37Speaker 3: cheese you can get on it, and again the pretzel
- 19:41Speaker 3: buns so good.
- 19:43Speaker 1: There's also Jewl of India, and I know Kate and
- 19:46Speaker 1: I have discussed. Jewel of India is a fan favorite.
- 19:50Speaker 1: It's it's like, if you really want a meal, like
- 19:54Speaker 1: a real meal on campus, like this is the way
- 19:57Speaker 1: to go.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 3: So it is on the price your side, but I mean,
- 20:01Speaker 3: depending on how you portion it, you can get two
- 20:03Speaker 3: portions out of it. I usually eat it in one sitting,
- 20:06Speaker 3: No shame, it's so good. But it's just so warm
- 20:09Speaker 3: and comforting and it tastes so good.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I remember my roommate would always get it, and she
- 20:18Speaker 1: was gluten free, so I would always get her non
- 20:20Speaker 1: and I would just come back from class and there'd
- 20:22Speaker 1: be non sitting on my desk.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And I loved it. So do you live Indya? Great option.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Next on the list, we have Gee Brothers Tacorea.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Yes, I again all things Mexican food, burritos, tacos, quesadillos,
- 20:40Speaker 1: love a good Geep Brothers Takorea Food Truck.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I know people that would get the tacos, kid you
- 20:45Speaker 3: not every single day.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Well, and that's the beauty of the food trucks too,
- 20:49Speaker 1: like they're right there in the central locations and you
- 20:53Speaker 1: just grab it and go, especially tacos like street tacos
- 20:57Speaker 1: right there.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so perfect.
- 20:58Speaker 3: And another Geebra's truck is their smokehouse, So this is
- 21:03Speaker 3: more barbecue.
- 21:04Speaker 1: All the meat eaters out there, we have something for
- 21:07Speaker 1: you here jee Brothers smokehouse.
- 21:10Speaker 3: And for those who might find themselves in poly Canyan village,
- 21:13Speaker 3: don't worry, there's something.
- 21:14Speaker 2: For you too. Yes.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So we have the classic Einstein Broze bagels. So this
- 21:22Speaker 1: is like a hot spot even if you're not in
- 21:24Speaker 1: PCB area. Like getting a good bagel, like a classic
- 21:29Speaker 1: bagel is just it comes in clutch like it's a
- 21:33Speaker 1: it's a must.
- 21:34Speaker 2: It does. It's a safe option.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And I know so many people that just make the
- 21:39Speaker 3: trek from their dorms all the way to PCB.
- 21:41Speaker 2: So you get.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Einstein, Yes, I've done it before. It's definitely well worth it.
- 21:46Speaker 1: And the Einstein is located inside the market in PCB,
- 21:51Speaker 1: So while you're getting a bagel, you can also do
- 21:54Speaker 1: some shopping. This market is similar to every other market
- 21:58Speaker 1: we have on campus, except I would say it's a
- 22:00Speaker 1: little more expansive because it's there for everyone, like all
- 22:04Speaker 1: the residents of PCB, So definitely a bigger, better option
- 22:09Speaker 1: for people to shop. And I know like this market
- 22:13Speaker 1: stays open on the weekends. So if you're a first
- 22:17Speaker 1: year on campus and you're looking to do some shopping
- 22:19Speaker 1: but you don't want to like the other markets not open,
- 22:23Speaker 1: definitely go make the hike to PCV, go to the market,
- 22:28Speaker 1: grab a bagel for while you're shopping.
- 22:30Speaker 2: It's definitely the way to go. And guess what, there's
- 22:33Speaker 2: another subway. Yes, we love our subway.
- 22:36Speaker 3: If you don't want to make the trek all the
- 22:38Speaker 3: way to Dexter Lawn, you can grab your subway in PCB.
- 22:41Speaker 2: There you go.
- 22:42Speaker 1: We also want to note that these hours and locations
- 22:46Speaker 1: are subject to change due to academic holidays, so keep
- 22:49Speaker 1: that in mind. Now that we've given you an overview
- 22:53Speaker 1: of all the food that's available on campus, let's get
- 22:56Speaker 1: into pricing and waste to pay. So so most meals
- 23:01Speaker 1: on campus will range from five to fifteen dollars, depending
- 23:05Speaker 1: on if you buy one item or go for a
- 23:07Speaker 1: full meal.
- 23:07Speaker 3: So, for instance, buying a pepperoni pizza.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Uh no, no, no, Kate, I believe Hearth calls it
- 23:13Speaker 1: the pepperoni pizza.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Get it right, I'm not saying that Peppieroni. No Pepperoni,
- 23:19Speaker 3: I don't do there's cameras here. I don't want my
- 23:23Speaker 3: digital footprint to be pepperoni.
- 23:25Speaker 1: No.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Can we just talk about how on the menu they
- 23:29Speaker 1: decided to act like we are like elementary school kids
- 23:33Speaker 1: like pepperoni.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Just say pepperoni.
- 23:37Speaker 3: I'm yeah, Sorry, guys, you're not getting that out of me.
- 23:41Speaker 3: So that kind of pizza is nine to ninety five
- 23:46Speaker 3: and the caesar salad is six ninety five.
- 23:49Speaker 1: This is typical pricing for food here, So be aware
- 23:52Speaker 1: of your budget and how you are spending your money.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Okay, So, speaking of money, let's get into how inflated
- 23:59Speaker 3: the price is at the market are and just for
- 24:01Speaker 3: food in general. So I'm a yuro girl. I love
- 24:04Speaker 3: a good year mamonte. These things are four dollars and
- 24:08Speaker 3: twenty cents at campus market or wherever you choose to
- 24:11Speaker 3: purchase them on campus. And you have an issue with yes,
- 24:16Speaker 3: the Amy's.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Burritos, Yes, the Amy's burritos, at the markets are like
- 24:20Speaker 1: seven dollars and it's like I could buy a seven
- 24:24Speaker 1: dollar box from Costco, Like I don't need it one
- 24:27Speaker 1: burrito for that much when it's a frozen, little packaged
- 24:30Speaker 1: Amy's thing. So I will say market prices are like
- 24:34Speaker 1: the bane of my existence here, and it's just I
- 24:38Speaker 1: can't do it. I can't buy into it. And I
- 24:41Speaker 1: know that shopping with your dining dollars feels like paying
- 24:44Speaker 1: with fake money, but it just it's not the most
- 24:47Speaker 1: sustainable way to eat.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:49Speaker 3: And while we're on the topic of how much money
- 24:52Speaker 3: you have in your account, it's important to know how
- 24:55Speaker 3: to check this out and know how much money you
- 24:57Speaker 3: do have in your account.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 1: So one way to do this is to go to
- 25:00Speaker 1: your col polyportal and under polycard services, you can find
- 25:05Speaker 1: out exactly how much money you have on your polycard.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Another easy way to find your balance is through the
- 25:11Speaker 1: grubhub app, which you can also use to order your food.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Yeah. So, you can go into the payment.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Section of the Grubhub app and you can select your
- 25:20Speaker 3: polycard and on there it will show you how much
- 25:23Speaker 3: balance you have.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 1: And on grubhub you can find most of the campus
- 25:27Speaker 1: dining locations and their food options as well as prices.
- 25:31Speaker 1: When you order your food, you'll be able to see
- 25:34Speaker 1: the total before you purchase.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Okay, so in terms of ordering, you can order in person,
- 25:40Speaker 3: you can order on grubhub whatever you want.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Either option works, yes, card cash, polycard, grub Hub.
- 25:48Speaker 2: It's all available to you.
- 25:50Speaker 3: If you like what you hear, make sure to check
- 25:52Speaker 3: out our curated music playlists made by the wonderful KCPR staff.
- 25:55Speaker 3: You can find these at KCPR dot org or on
- 25:58Speaker 3: your favorite streaming platform.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Personally, for me, I like the Getting Ready for School
- 26:02Speaker 1: playlist definitely puts me in the mood to go to class.
- 26:05Speaker 3: They have some great study playlists as well, so make
- 26:08Speaker 3: sure you.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Check this out.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Now that we've talked money, let's talk about dietary restrictions
- 26:12Speaker 1: and how you can still eat on campus.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Another subject that I really relate to. So as someone
- 26:18Speaker 3: who is dairy free and red meat free, eating on
- 26:21Speaker 3: campus was sometimes a challenge, but again, like I said before,
- 26:25Speaker 3: I figured it out and it's not completely impossible to
- 26:28Speaker 3: find options.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Yes, you should check out the Dining Considerations page on
- 26:32Speaker 1: the campus dining website. You'll be able to find information
- 26:35Speaker 1: about what campus dining does to accommodate for every diet
- 26:38Speaker 1: that's right.
- 26:39Speaker 3: And so the spot that Campus Dining recommends is Balance Cafe,
- 26:45Speaker 3: and this is because they minimize cross contamination and they
- 26:49Speaker 3: really put a focus on being allerge and friendly and
- 26:52Speaker 3: so personally, like I said before, I stuck to Red
- 26:56Speaker 3: Radish Shakesmartin Scout, I was always able to find options
- 27:00Speaker 3: for my personal diet at these spots. So I have
- 27:04Speaker 3: complete faith in every single one of you that has
- 27:06Speaker 3: some sort of dietary restriction.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yes, and if you're completely stuck, you're able to make
- 27:12Speaker 1: an appointment with the campus Dining Wellness office to kind
- 27:15Speaker 1: of discuss the right pathway for you.
- 27:17Speaker 3: And another great resource for students to check out is
- 27:20Speaker 3: the food pantry located in the campus Health and well
- 27:23Speaker 3: Being Building, which is Building twenty seven, Room ten.
- 27:26Speaker 1: The food pantry is open Monday through Friday eight thirty
- 27:29Speaker 1: am to five pm, and it is stocked with fresh
- 27:31Speaker 1: food that is actually donated from the Slow Food Bank,
- 27:34Speaker 1: the cowpoly Crops Unit, and many local grocery stores.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Yeah, such a cool resource.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I wish that I took advantage of this more so
- 27:42Speaker 3: I recommend that you all check this out, and if
- 27:44Speaker 3: you have any lingering questions, check out the campus dining
- 27:47Speaker 3: website at dine on campus dot com slash cowpoly.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Well, that's all the time we have for today. One
- 27:55Speaker 1: last piece of advice, when in doubt, go to Subway.
- 27:59Speaker 1: It's open twenty five four hours and it will never
- 28:01Speaker 1: let you down.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Anyways.
- 28:03Speaker 3: We'll be back with more tips and tricks next time
