- 0:59Author of " Fit: I am a big fan and I can't believe you're on the show.
- 1:03Author of " Fit: Oh, Carmen thank you so much.
- 1:05Author of " Fit: I'm super excited to be here.
- 1:07Author of " Fit: Great.
- 1:07Author of " Fit: Can you, tell the audience who you are and a little bit about your business?
- 1:13Author of " Fit: Sure Kelly Howard, and I am known as the fitness consistency expert with a touch of adventure.
- 1:19Author of " Fit: And what my business is I help women learn how to become consistent with their fitness and then keep it for a lifetime.
- 1:28Author of " Fit: And we do that through some coaching course retreats and just learning how to play and have a lot of fun.
- 1:35Author of " Fit: Yes.
- 1:36Author of " Fit: And you know, when I, think about your brand, Fit is Freedom, there's so much truth to that phrase.
- 1:44Author of " Fit: Yeah.
- 1:45Author of " Fit: It's it.
- 1:46Author of " Fit: It's just the thing, because in our lives, we play so many roles, but the truth is that if we don't feel good, then we're not free to do anything well with all those roles.
- 1:56Author of " Fit: It just doesn't work.
- 1:57Author of " Fit: And I'll give you a little backstory because just your title resonates with my backstory.
- 2:02Author of " Fit: So last year my husband and I and my daughter always go to Hawaii.
- 2:06Author of " Fit: It's our favorite place to be.
- 2:07Author of " Fit: And so we were in Maui during the time of the fires.
- 2:17Author of " Fit: And my husband and I did our best to not show how panicked we were, because we could see the fires.
- 2:25Author of " Fit: From where we were at from our hotel.
- 2:27Author of " Fit: And we had no power, no cell phones.
- 2:31Author of " Fit: We were trapped.
- 2:32Author of " Fit: And we have a 10 year old, she's 11 now, but she was 10 at the time.
- 2:35Author of " Fit: And all I kept thinking is if something happens, I'm going to get my daughter, get my husband and we're going to go into the ocean.
- 2:41Author of " Fit: And we were staying in a big hotel.
- 2:44Author of " Fit: So there's like several thousands of people staying here.
- 2:47Author of " Fit: And I just kept thinking anything happens, we'll just go to the ocean.
- 2:49Author of " Fit: I can swim.
- 2:50Author of " Fit: And I didn't tell my husband this because I didn't want him to know that I was scared for my life and, scared for us.
- 2:57Author of " Fit: Because, we could see the red flames.
- 3:00Author of " Fit: And, fortunately the fire stopped about a mile before it reached our hotel.
- 3:05Author of " Fit: Oh gosh.
- 3:06Author of " Fit: And when we got to the airport, my husband told me, he says, I was thinking that night, I thought about going and getting some life preservers.
- 3:15Author of " Fit: Cause there's thousands of people here and everyone probably thought the same thing.
- 3:19Author of " Fit: If the fire reaches our area, we need to get to the ocean.
- 3:23Author of " Fit: And my husband said, I know that I'm a good swimmer, but honestly, with that many people, I don't honestly think that I could stay in the water that long with my daughter and you.
- 3:34Author of " Fit: And so that's why your title, your brand resonates so much with me because fit is freedom.
- 3:41Author of " Fit: I think if we were both fit, we wouldn't fear that if we were put into a situation that meant life or death, could we survive?
- 3:51Author of " Fit: That's powerful.
- 3:52Author of " Fit: And yeah.
- 3:54Author of " Fit: oh my goodness.
- 3:55Author of " Fit: What a situation.
- 3:56Author of " Fit: Yeah.
- 3:57Author of " Fit: And, fortunately we made it out and stuff, but it's just, you never know where life's going to take you.
- 4:01Author of " Fit: And I think that being fit, in my opinion, especially after reading your book, is, it's not about having that rock hard body that we see, we all see those beach body commercials and other people that are just, they look amazing.
- 4:16Author of " Fit: And, sometimes.
- 4:18Author of " Fit: Some of us may dream, oh, I'd love to look that way, but is that really fit?
- 4:21Author of " Fit: I think that you have changed the, meaning of what it means to be fit.
- 4:27Author of " Fit: It doesn't mean that you have to look that way.
- 4:29Author of " Fit: Oh, thank you.
- 4:30Author of " Fit: Isn't that so true, too?
- 4:32Author of " Fit: Of course, everybody wants to have, and I think probably I can say this with, totalitarian.
- 4:38Author of " Fit: All of us want to have that appearance but in the very, very bottom line, it's what we can do.
- 4:45Author of " Fit: It's what we can do with the bodies that we have.
- 4:47Author of " Fit: It's how we take care of them so that we can enjoy our lives.
- 4:50Author of " Fit: We can live our lives.
- 4:52Author of " Fit: We can tread water when we need to tread water.
- 4:54Author of " Fit: Could you share How you discovered your passion for fitness and adventure and what motivated you to focus specifically in helping women in midlife?
- 5:06Author of " Fit: Absolutely.
- 5:07Author of " Fit: So much.
- 5:07Author of " Fit: We teach what we need to learn, right?
- 5:10Author of " Fit: I'm in my early sixties now.
- 5:11Author of " Fit: So prior to that, go back to just about 50.
- 5:15Author of " Fit: I had purchased a company a couple of years before, and it was an outdoor activity company.
- 5:20Author of " Fit: So it was like, hiking and biking and all these outdoor things.
- 5:23Author of " Fit: And it was stuff that I hadn't really done before.
- 5:27Author of " Fit: I had always been very active, but I'd never done these particular things.
- 5:30Author of " Fit: So I am growing this company.
- 5:33Author of " Fit: I'm doing all the work.
- 5:35Author of " Fit: We happened to buy a new house that was an old house.
- 5:38Author of " Fit: So knowing that the best thing you can do is be your own contractor or have a contractor, I decided to set up work in the middle of that vacant house and just tell everybody what to do.
- 5:47Author of " Fit: So now I'm working on two by four, running this company, starting it.
- 5:50Author of " Fit: My mother has a heart attack.
- 5:52Author of " Fit: She has a stroke and falls, ends up in a wheelchair.
- 5:56Author of " Fit: So now I'm taking care of my mom too.
- 5:58Author of " Fit: And it's no different the story is no different than any of us, right?
- 6:01Author of " Fit: Like we all have all these things that are going on in life.
- 6:05Author of " Fit: I was getting by on a body that, I'd always taken care of, but I was also, what, late forties, early fifties now.
- 6:12Author of " Fit: So you can't just get away with being a weekend warrior and expect your body to hold on.
- 6:17Author of " Fit: So one day in the middle of all this, I wake up and I realized that I am in too much pain to walk to the bathroom.
- 6:24Author of " Fit: Like I literally crawl to the bathroom and I crawl back to bed.
- 6:30Author of " Fit: And of course, the first thing I do is, what I call hypochondriacs.com I'm on there looking to see What's wrong with me?
- 6:36Author of " Fit: I'm probably dying from something.
- 6:38Author of " Fit: And the whole time in the back of my head, I'm hearing, yeah, Kel, what you're dying from is the fact that there's nothing wrong with you except that you're not taking care of your body.
- 6:47Author of " Fit: You're trying to get by in a 50 year old body, treating it like it's 20 years old.
- 6:52Author of " Fit: And there's nothing wrong with a 50 year old body, except that we have to be a little bit kinder, and we have to be a little bit smarter.
- 7:00Author of " Fit: So, fast forward a week or so, I'm back to doing all the things, but I'm a little bit wiser than I was a week before.
- 7:07Author of " Fit: And I go back to what I had done before, which was, back to lifting weights, back to doing, all the mobility, back to my basics, my routine.
- 7:15Author of " Fit: But while I'm doing all this, I'm also thinking about the fact that all these women I know, all these women I work with, we're all doing the same thing, right?
- 7:22Author of " Fit: We're all doing all the things and expecting our bodies just to suck it up and do this stuff.
- 7:29Author of " Fit: And it's not real.
- 7:31Author of " Fit: Like it is realistic that we can do all the things.
- 7:34Author of " Fit: But only if we support ourselves in the process.
- 7:38Author of " Fit: So in that moment, this company was born.
- 7:41Author of " Fit: Now I still had, call it 10 years to grow the old company, get it to a point where it was sellable, sell it.
- 7:48Author of " Fit: But even during that period of time, I was still working with, I was really working with my women, like helping them get solid on whatever it was like their outdoor activities they wanted to do or their fitness really get solid with it.
- 8:00Author of " Fit: And so once I sold that company, I just decided this is what I do.
- 8:03Author of " Fit: I love it, right?
- 8:04Author of " Fit: I really love it because no matter where you're at, in life, we can get stronger, fitter, have more fun, have more freedom, but we do have to be a little strategic about It.
- 8:16Author of " Fit: Yeah, like picking up weights or, let's say you wanted to build a shed in your backyard.
- 8:20Author of " Fit: When you were in your twenties or thirties, maybe you could lift a lot of lumber and haul it to where you needed to haul it, or you could just nonchalant, just bend over and pick it up.
- 8:30Author of " Fit: The wise thing to do is lift with your knees, not bend over because we're not going to recover as quickly as we did in our twenties and thirties.
- 8:40Author of " Fit: It's so hard to remember.
- 8:41Author of " Fit: I've got this dog that ended up living with me, two of them, and she's probably about 78 pounds, and twice, two times, I've just she doesn't like to get in the car, so I've just reached down, picked the dog up, threw her in the car, and all of a sudden I'm like, oh my gosh, what did you just do, Kelly?
- 9:01Author of " Fit: And then, of course, it takes me a little while to learn, do the same thing again.
- 9:04Author of " Fit: And we also have to be a little smarter, I guess.
- 9:07Author of " Fit: But I think that we need to become acquainted with our new bodies.
- 9:12Author of " Fit: They're not really new, but they're new to us because they react differently than they did before.
- 9:20Author of " Fit: They do.
- 9:21Author of " Fit: And maybe we get away with stuff when we're a little bit younger that we can't get away with so easily now.
- 9:27Author of " Fit: But maybe we're also smarter now.
- 9:30Author of " Fit: Obviously not since I keep picking up the darn dog, but one day I'm going to be smart enough not to do that.
- 9:36Author of " Fit: But we do, we get a little bit smarter.
- 9:39Author of " Fit: And when we do, we learn how to work with our bodies the way they are so that we can do even more.
- 9:45Author of " Fit: It's just a matter of care.
- 9:47Author of " Fit: So tell me, when you purchased this company, this outdoor activity company, and you suddenly discovered that you needed to change your life.
- 9:57Author of " Fit: Did owning this company, did it make it easier for you to connect with your tribe?
- 10:02Author of " Fit: Oh gosh, yes.
- 10:03Author of " Fit: Oh yes.
- 10:04Author of " Fit: Because I have been very fortunate my whole life.
- 10:07Author of " Fit: I've always been active and I've always been strong.
- 10:09Author of " Fit: And I don't know why, but I started going to the gym, lifting weights when I was about 19 - 20.
- 10:15Author of " Fit: I was like the only woman in there in the free weight section.
- 10:18Author of " Fit: And so I've always been strong.
- 10:20Author of " Fit: And what I realized was that a lot of us didn't have that lucky background that I had.
- 10:26Author of " Fit: So, what would happen is that women would be excited about doing something and then they'd try it and they'd realize that they weren't that good at it.
- 10:34Author of " Fit: And so they want to stop.
- 10:36Author of " Fit: And instead I'd be like, no, it's not the fact that you're not that good at it.
- 10:39Author of " Fit: It's just that you're not practiced at it.
- 10:41Author of " Fit: That's all it is.
- 10:42Author of " Fit: We can do almost anything if we train for it.
- 10:44Author of " Fit: And the women that I worked with, we proved that time and time again.
- 10:48Author of " Fit: And this is a story I'd love to tell it.
- 10:50Author of " Fit: It fits, it doesn't, but it's a worthwhile story.
- 10:53Author of " Fit: So I was, at the time I'd been leading hikes in Houston for a number of years.
- 10:59Author of " Fit: And Houston's a relatively flat city.
- 11:01Author of " Fit: Okay, it's flat as a board.
- 11:02Author of " Fit: But there's this one section in Houston that we have some hills.
- 11:05Author of " Fit: Houston Hills is what we call them.
- 11:07Author of " Fit: They're not that big, 20, 30 feet tall, not much, but it's something that requires a little bit of effort.
- 11:13Author of " Fit: So I had this hike, I was getting ready to lead and we're getting ready to head out and this woman shows up and she stops, she gets out of her car and she doesn't have hiking poles, she has a cane.
- 11:23Author of " Fit: I'm taken aback.
- 11:24Author of " Fit: I don't even know what to say exactly, actually.
- 11:27Author of " Fit: But I do know what I'm going to say because I'm like, oh, hi, great.
- 11:30Author of " Fit: Join us, right?
- 11:31Author of " Fit: Like I'm not going to say don't come.
- 11:33Author of " Fit: And she's no, no, no, no.
- 11:34Author of " Fit: I just wanted to prove to myself that I would come here.
- 11:36Author of " Fit: I'm not going to go with you guys.
- 11:38Author of " Fit: And I was like, wait, you don't know me.
- 11:40Author of " Fit: So you're here, you're going.
- 11:42Author of " Fit: And we convinced her to go.
- 11:43Author of " Fit: And it really became a deal where it takes a village.
- 11:47Author of " Fit: Like we were helping her up.
- 11:48Author of " Fit: We were helping her down.
- 11:49Author of " Fit: Everybody was in on this.
- 11:51Author of " Fit: I don't know how many people I had out there.
- 11:52Author of " Fit: I had a crowd out there.
- 11:53Author of " Fit: But it became a thing and we finished this hike and she finished it with us.
- 11:57Author of " Fit: And when she got back to the parking lot, she was just like, oh my gosh, I never thought I could do that.
- 12:01Author of " Fit: I was hoping that in a year I might be able to go like a mile with you somewhere, but not that hike.
- 12:07Author of " Fit: It was, three miles.
- 12:08Author of " Fit: It was solid.
- 12:09Author of " Fit: So, great story, right?
- 12:11Author of " Fit: But it doesn't end there.
- 12:13Author of " Fit: Call it four to five years later, I get an email from her and she stayed in touch with me.
- 12:17Author of " Fit: She'd been traveling and stuff like that.
- 12:18Author of " Fit: So I get this email and she has it's her 65th birthday.
- 12:23Author of " Fit: She's at the trailhead for Yosemite Falls.
- 12:25Author of " Fit: Yosemite Falls is, it's a solid hike.
- 12:27Author of " Fit: I've done it and I was like, that was fun.
- 12:30Author of " Fit: So she's at the trailhead she's just finished the hike.
- 12:32Author of " Fit: She'd taken a couple of friends.
- 12:33Author of " Fit: It was her birthday and she did the hike.
- 12:36Author of " Fit: And she had taken off and she was going to go hike all the national parks around the country.
- 12:42Author of " Fit: That's amazing to me.
- 12:44Author of " Fit: That right there I could have just stopped.
- 12:46Author of " Fit: I, as far as I was concerned, I had just accomplished my life's mission.
- 12:49Author of " Fit: But then, you go on and it keeps happening and that's freedom, right?
- 12:53Author of " Fit: It is.
- 12:54Author of " Fit: Yeah.
- 12:55Author of " Fit: I love that story.
- 12:56Author of " Fit: I remember when I got to that section in your book where you wrote about that story.
- 13:00Author of " Fit: I asked my husband, how rigorous is, Yosemite Falls?
- 13:03Author of " Fit: Cause we've been to Yosemite.
- 13:04Author of " Fit: And he goes, you've never been to Yosemite Falls.
- 13:06Author of " Fit: He says, that's a hike.
- 13:08Author of " Fit: He that's not for everybody.
- 13:10Author of " Fit: He says, you could not do that.
- 13:12Author of " Fit: And you have to be in really good shape to do that.
- 13:16Author of " Fit: And I said, because I read about that.
- 13:18Author of " Fit: And it warmed my heart to read that story because I loved the community that you built.
- 13:25Author of " Fit: Because I think if it would have been a different community, you would have had some people say, oh my God, Right.
- 13:32Author of " Fit: This is going to take forever.
- 13:34Author of " Fit: I can't believe Kelly invited her to come.
- 13:37Author of " Fit: Now we're going to have to chug her along.
- 13:39Author of " Fit: We're responsible for this person who's out of shape.
- 13:42Author of " Fit: But they welcomed her.
- 13:44Author of " Fit: They embraced her.
- 13:45Author of " Fit: They motivated her.
- 13:46Author of " Fit: It's so cool.
- 13:47Author of " Fit: Isn't it?
- 13:47Author of " Fit: It's a changer.
- 13:49Author of " Fit: It's a changer in our life.
- 13:50Author of " Fit: And when you have good community, oh my goodness, like life changes.
- 13:55Author of " Fit: And the benefit that she received is that it motivated her to keep going.
- 14:01Author of " Fit: That she had an entire village that believed in her.
- 14:05Author of " Fit: You believed in her.
- 14:06Author of " Fit: And then the village believed in her that they helped her achieve this thing that she thought was going to happen in a year or two.
- 14:14Author of " Fit: Yeah, I love that story.
- 14:16Author of " Fit: It's like one of those, I'll never forget that one.
- 14:19Author of " Fit: Yeah, I loved it because like I said, it just showed, the support system of, women connecting with women.
- 14:26Author of " Fit: It's a big piece.
- 14:28Author of " Fit: It's a huge piece.
- 14:29Author of " Fit: I don't think we really realized for the longest what a difference a community makes.
- 14:35Author of " Fit: We know we need friends.
- 14:37Author of " Fit: And we especially know we would need friends after the pandemic.
- 14:40Author of " Fit: We experienced what life was like without connection.
- 14:44Author of " Fit: But then when you really get connected even just like briefly, right?
- 14:48Author of " Fit: It's when you have those connections, we need that.
- 14:51Author of " Fit: So fun.
- 14:52Author of " Fit: Exactly.
- 14:53Author of " Fit: From your extensive experience, what is the most common obstacles that women encounter and how do you help them overcome that obstacle?
- 15:03Author of " Fit: There's a couple.
- 15:04Author of " Fit: First one starts in our head, right?
- 15:06Author of " Fit: I believe that fitness starts in our brain, not our feet.
- 15:09Author of " Fit: And a lot of times it can be one of several things.
- 15:12Author of " Fit: One of them is that feeling that, you know what maybe it's time to just give up.
- 15:16Author of " Fit: Whatever it is, right?
- 15:18Author of " Fit: Whatever holds us back.
- 15:19Author of " Fit: Maybe it's just time to throw in the towel.
- 15:21Author of " Fit: That's one of them.
- 15:22Author of " Fit: The other one is, I'll start next week.
- 15:24Author of " Fit: And either one of those, they're two sides of the same coin, right?
- 15:28Author of " Fit: And so, what it's about is the fact that a lot of times we think that we'll start next week because next week we'll have our act together.
- 15:36Author of " Fit: Next week we'll be perfect at this, right?
- 15:38Author of " Fit: We'll nail it.
- 15:39Author of " Fit: Perfection is baloney.
- 15:41Author of " Fit: Perfection when it comes to, especially when it comes to your fitness, isn't real.
- 15:45Author of " Fit: If you're hitting every one of your fitness goals every day, click, you're probably not trying hard enough, quite frankly.
- 15:51Author of " Fit: So knowing that your mind's has to be your first obstacle.
- 15:54Author of " Fit: One way to, to jump around that is to give yourself a very simple little schedule of the things that it's a mix.
- 16:03Author of " Fit: Okay, it's a mix of some mobility.
- 16:05Author of " Fit: Because we need that mobility and mobility is nothing more than warming up our joints.
- 16:10Author of " Fit: Think about mobility that way.
- 16:11Author of " Fit: It's not about stretching.
- 16:13Author of " Fit: It's not about having to do an hour of yoga.
- 16:15Author of " Fit: It's just warming up our joints.
- 16:16Author of " Fit: We need that.
- 16:17Author of " Fit: I'm going to give you an aside.
- 16:19Author of " Fit: This is not a squirrel moment, but I'll just give you an aside.
- 16:27Author of " Fit: I've done a test and this test is on my body.
- 16:30Author of " Fit: So it's a test of one, same hike done numerous times.
- 16:33Author of " Fit: I'll get out of the car and I'll go out cold.
- 16:36Author of " Fit: I'll come back and I'll test How do I feel?
- 16:38Author of " Fit: How fast did I go?
- 16:40Author of " Fit: All this, I'll test all the things.
- 16:41Author of " Fit: Then, same hike another day I get out of the car.
- 16:44Author of " Fit: I do my mobility workout.
- 16:46Author of " Fit: After those five minutes, I go out and do it.
- 16:48Author of " Fit: I'm faster.
- 16:49Author of " Fit: I feel better.
- 16:51Author of " Fit: Things hurt less.
- 16:52Author of " Fit: So if I can say anything, do a little bit of mobility.
- 16:55Author of " Fit: Then you need to have a little bit of cardio, whatever a little bit is for you, and then some resistance.
- 17:00Author of " Fit: And there's lots of resistance out there.
- 17:02Author of " Fit: But take those things and then just simply ask yourself, if I was to do a couple of these each a week, how could I put them into a schedule that fits into my time?
- 17:11Author of " Fit: Even if it's only 10, 15 minutes a day and start there.
- 17:15Author of " Fit: Start so small that you're pretty sure what you're doing is not worthwhile.
- 17:20Author of " Fit: When you start that small, and you just do it for a month, right?
- 17:24Author of " Fit: You just give yourself a month.
- 17:25Author of " Fit: After a month, you start adjusting, you start getting a habit.
- 17:29Author of " Fit: You maybe don't have a full habit yet, but you start getting a habit.
- 17:32Author of " Fit: That's what gets us moving.
- 17:34Author of " Fit: Just like giving ourselves a little bit of grace, giving ourselves a little bit of space And I think not comparing yourself.
- 17:41Author of " Fit: Let's say you have a girlfriend that her body is exactly like yours.
- 17:46Author of " Fit: You're around the same age.
- 17:47Author of " Fit: And let's say she says, oh, I walk a mile in, eight minutes.
- 17:52Author of " Fit: And you walk a mile and it took you 15 minutes.
- 17:56Author of " Fit: Maybe saying, I should just give up because it takes me 15 minutes she could have done two miles in the time that I did one mile.
- 18:04Author of " Fit: Yeah, that's such a good point.
- 18:06Author of " Fit: And not worrying if you're slow.
- 18:09Author of " Fit: That's something I see a lot.
- 18:11Author of " Fit: And it's always my women, it's never my guys.
- 18:13Author of " Fit: It's always my women.
- 18:14Author of " Fit: And they'll be like, I don't want to hold people back.
- 18:17Author of " Fit: I'm like, you know what?
- 18:18Author of " Fit: So what?
- 18:19Author of " Fit: Don't worry about it.
- 18:20Author of " Fit: And know that you're not that far behind.
- 18:24Author of " Fit: Even if it's a minute difference in a mile, it's just not that big a deal.
- 18:27Author of " Fit: And you're exactly right.
- 18:28Author of " Fit: There'll be that day when that person who was doing their 10 minute mile or whatever it was, is wondering what the heck got into you?
- 18:35Author of " Fit: And they're trying to keep up.
- 18:36Author of " Fit: So we can't compare ourselves to other people and it's the same thing with appearance, right?
- 18:41Author of " Fit: It's just hard.
- 18:42Author of " Fit: Like when you see the people we were talking about earlier, when you see those people who look freaking amazing, at least in photos.
- 18:50Author of " Fit: It's like I always say, I want to look like I do on Zoom with my filter.
- 18:53Author of " Fit: I do.
- 18:54Author of " Fit: At least in photos.
- 18:56Author of " Fit: And we just can't compare it.
- 18:58Author of " Fit: And that takes me to page 59 where you said, we live in a society that loves instant solutions.
- 19:05Author of " Fit: Quick fixes might seem attractive, but seldom last.
- 19:09Author of " Fit: And I think this is really important, especially right now, because you find that a lot of people maybe watching more TV and they see, Oprah or Kelly Clarkson, who we've all known them to be bigger people and now they're smaller people.
- 19:23Author of " Fit: And we say, I'm going to go see my doctor and I'm going to ask for that diabetic medication because I deserve to look small too.
- 19:30Author of " Fit: But that doesn't mean you're fit.
- 19:33Author of " Fit: You're still not going to be able to have the endurance to do the things you really want to do.
- 19:41Author of " Fit: We are very much a visual quick fix, lose 30 pounds in 30 days society.
- 19:47Author of " Fit: And it's hard, okay it's hard to look away.
- 19:51Author of " Fit: I understand that.
- 19:52Author of " Fit: And then if you can, and you can just run your own race is what I've always telling my women, just run your own race.
- 19:58Author of " Fit: Don't worry about it.
- 19:59Author of " Fit: I have a client who one day she was like, oh my gosh, I'm finally running my own race.
- 20:05Author of " Fit: I said, and so what's happened?
- 20:06Author of " Fit: And she's I'm so happy.
- 20:08Author of " Fit: I'm so happy.
- 20:09Author of " Fit: She was trying to keep up with some of the other people in the group and she was trying to do other things that just didn't work for her body.
- 20:15Author of " Fit: And now she's just rocking it in her own space.
- 20:18Author of " Fit: And another thing when reading your book that really was an eye opener to me was my husband and I walk three and a half miles every day.
- 20:25Author of " Fit: And he's taller than me.
- 20:26Author of " Fit: Got longer legs than me.
- 20:28Author of " Fit: And I am like almost jogging to keep up with him.
- 20:32Author of " Fit: And I cannot hold a conversation with him while we're walking.
- 20:36Author of " Fit: Thank goodness we listen to books.
- 20:37Author of " Fit: I was thinking, cause we used to walk my daughter to school and that was less walking than the walking we do now.
- 20:45Author of " Fit: And I started losing weight when we were walking her to school.
- 20:47Author of " Fit: And now I'm trying to keep up with him.
- 20:49Author of " Fit: And it's just by the time we get home, I'm like sweating and everything cause I'm post-menopausal.
- 20:54Author of " Fit: And so I'm sweating.
- 20:55Author of " Fit: And he's like, why are you all sweaty?
- 20:57Author of " Fit: And I said, I got a hot flash in the middle of all of our walking that's why I'm all sweaty.
- 21:01Author of " Fit: But in reading your book, you talked about raising your heart level, bringing your heart level down and stuff.
- 21:06Author of " Fit: And I thought, oh my goodness.
- 21:08Author of " Fit: The reason why I lost weight when we walked my daughter to school is because we had stoplights and we would stop.
- 21:14Author of " Fit: So it gave my heart enough time to drop and then spike back up.
- 21:18Author of " Fit: As opposed to now I'm spiked up at all time and so what do I have?
- 21:23Author of " Fit: Cortisol.
- 21:24Author of " Fit: Yeah, that such a great awareness right?
- 21:28Author of " Fit: Cause when you were doing the walking to school, it's almost like you're doing high intensity training.
- 21:32Author of " Fit: Up, down, up, down, up, down.
- 21:34Author of " Fit: But, basically, what happens is that we can get away with probably an hour of cardio, right?
- 21:40Author of " Fit: Hard cardio.
- 21:41Author of " Fit: But after that we're burning muscle.
- 21:43Author of " Fit: And it's not really doing us that great.
- 21:45Author of " Fit: Which is a bummer.
- 21:47Author of " Fit: Like I love cardio.
- 21:49Author of " Fit: I'm a bit of an addict.
- 21:50Author of " Fit: But at the same time, I've also learned that maybe once a week, go hard and long.
- 21:55Author of " Fit: And then the rest of the time, give yourself that up and down.
- 21:58Author of " Fit: And high intensity training will help remove the weight versus just driving up the cortisol that doing nothing but hard cardio does.
- 22:07Author of " Fit: The other thing that I loved is that you talked about the blend.
- 22:11Author of " Fit: For example, you have Isabella She was heading for a heart attack.
- 22:15Author of " Fit: And so her doctor told her to do something.
- 22:18Author of " Fit: And so she walked and she was walking, she was moving but when she saw you, you made a different suggestion.
- 22:24Author of " Fit: You said we need to change things up a bit.
- 22:27Author of " Fit: And I liked that because you talked about not just the cardio, but she also needed to do the resistance training and balance.
- 22:34Author of " Fit: And I thought, oh my goodness, I'm like Isabella.
- 22:37Author of " Fit: I'm not doing the resistance.
- 22:39Author of " Fit: I'm not lifting weights.
- 22:40Author of " Fit: I'm not doing anything about balance.
- 22:42Author of " Fit: About making sure that I, still have balance.
- 22:44Author of " Fit: Cause we're not as agile as we used to be.
- 22:47Author of " Fit: And it's true right but two things I can say.
- 22:50Author of " Fit: One of them is, when you do resistance, your balance comes back.
- 22:54Author of " Fit: And when you do balance work, your balance gets better every time.
- 22:57Author of " Fit: And it's fast, right?
- 22:59Author of " Fit: Like we do what I call experiments in my group.
- 23:01Author of " Fit: Cause I don't like challenges.
- 23:02Author of " Fit: Challenges sound, I don't know, boring, but experiments are like, try this for three weeks or a month or whatever.
- 23:08Author of " Fit: And right now we're doing a balance experiment.
- 23:10Author of " Fit: Start out like knowing where your balance is, what can you do?
- 23:14Author of " Fit: Can you stand on one foot with your eyes shut?
- 23:15Author of " Fit: If so, how long?
- 23:16Author of " Fit: Or whatever, wherever your starting point is.
- 23:19Author of " Fit: At the end of three weeks, everybody's just blown away by the fact that their body and their brain have reintegrated with these balance work exercises and they're, solid.
- 23:29Author of " Fit: And then, the flip side of that is that the resistance does add to your balance every time.
- 23:35Author of " Fit: It really does.
- 23:36Author of " Fit: And we need it.
- 23:37Author of " Fit: I mean, muscle starts going away.
- 23:39Author of " Fit: It's a bummer.
- 23:40Author of " Fit: Oh I know I look at myself and oh goodness.
- 23:42Author of " Fit: Where I used to have muscle, I have fat.
- 23:44Author of " Fit: And it seems now ,that I'm older it seems like harder to build muscle.
- 23:49Author of " Fit: It is you have to become can I use the word trickier?
- 23:54Author of " Fit: You have to be a little bit more cognizant.
- 23:57Author of " Fit: I'm more protein centric.
- 23:59Author of " Fit: And I am someone who has been a vegetarian since I was about 20.
- 24:02Author of " Fit: So I didn't eat protein for 40 years.
- 24:06Author of " Fit: I ate pasta.
- 24:07Author of " Fit: It's my favorite food, right?
- 24:08Author of " Fit: I love pasta.
- 24:09Author of " Fit: I can't do it anymore.
- 24:10Author of " Fit: Like I can eat a little bit of pasta once a week, but I can't get away with it.
- 24:14Author of " Fit: So, protein centric, more supplements that are leaning more like, and okay guys, I'm not a doctor.
- 24:20Author of " Fit: I'm not a nurse.
- 24:20Author of " Fit: I have no letters behind my name, but I will say sitting on my desk right now is a bottle of creatine.
- 24:27Author of " Fit: Because I need to order some more.
- 24:28Author of " Fit: Because I see for myself, when I lift and then take creatine and aminos, which are basically the building blocks of protein, my muscles come on quicker.
- 24:39Author of " Fit: And, I use, more protein powders.
- 24:43Author of " Fit: We just have to be a little bit smarter.
- 24:45Author of " Fit: And I lift differently than I used to.
- 24:47Author of " Fit: I used to go to the gym and I'd use the free weights and the machines.
- 24:51Author of " Fit: And that was great.
- 24:52Author of " Fit: And now I work out at home.
- 24:53Author of " Fit: And so I'm very super aware.
- 24:55Author of " Fit: And I'm sure you know this, but if you need a reminder to anybody listening, when you're doing your, weights, or your resistance, or your body, or body weight, or whatever it is, you're thinking about those muscles.
- 25:05Author of " Fit: Because when you're thinking about those muscles, you're actually making a connection.
- 25:09Author of " Fit: And they have shown again and again, that you will actually increase your muscles by thinking about your muscles.
- 25:15Author of " Fit: And it sounds crazy, if you haven't heard this before, read it.
- 25:20Author of " Fit: Olympic athletes do this night and day now.
- 25:22Author of " Fit: I have friends who are gold medal winners and this is how they train.
- 25:27Author of " Fit: Yeah, and my husband, he lifts weights all time.
- 25:30Author of " Fit: And I walked into his office, cause that's what he does during his lunch break.
- 25:33Author of " Fit: And I saw him lifting and it almost seemed like he was just like lifting.
- 25:36Author of " Fit: Not exactly like that.
- 25:37Author of " Fit: He was more concentrated, but I asked him, I said, hey, are you thinking about that muscle you're using?
- 25:42Author of " Fit: And he's what do you know?
- 25:44Author of " Fit: You never lift.
- 25:44Author of " Fit: And I said, no, but when was in my thirties I used to go to the racket club and I lifted.
- 25:52Author of " Fit: I had a gentleman come up and he told me, he says, you need to focus on the muscle that you're working and breathe.
- 25:57Author of " Fit: And I said, and he taught me how to breathe.
- 25:59Author of " Fit: And he taught me to focus on that particular muscle that I'm working out.
- 26:03Author of " Fit: And I thought he was crazy, but I thought, hey, yeah, I'll try it.
- 26:06Author of " Fit: And I started gaining muscle definition.
- 26:09Author of " Fit: And I said, so you really need to focus on the muscle that you're working out and breathe.
- 26:15Author of " Fit: I said, I can't remember if it's in or out, with the flexion or whatever.
- 26:20Author of " Fit: And I said, you'll be surprised.
- 26:21Author of " Fit: You will gain muscle as opposed to if your just lifting nothing is to happen.
- 26:25Author of " Fit: It takes a lot of mind.
- 26:27Author of " Fit: Yeah, isn't It?
- 26:28Author of " Fit: It's so interesting to me.
- 26:29Author of " Fit: And I love, I love that I think something that's happening right now is that there's so much science, right?
- 26:36Author of " Fit: I read a lot.
- 26:37Author of " Fit: And so I'm always reading the science to this stuff, because, somebody's going to say to me, I had a client say it a couple of days ago.
- 26:44Author of " Fit: She says, Kelly, I'm doing what you said.
- 26:46Author of " Fit: But I've never done any of this before in my life and I'm 67.
- 26:50Author of " Fit: Am I really going to see a change?
- 26:52Author of " Fit: So poor thing.
- 26:54Author of " Fit: She's probably still trying to dig herself up out from underneath all the reports I sent her showing.
- 27:00Author of " Fit: Yes.
- 27:00Author of " Fit: Yes.
- 27:01Author of " Fit: We can make these changes and especially if we do exactly what you just said, throw everything at it.
- 27:07Author of " Fit: Do all of I thought the guy was crazy when he told me that, but then, within a couple of weeks or so, I can't remember exactly, I was getting out of the shower and I was drying myself off and I looked at my leg and I'm like, oh my goodness.
- 27:19Author of " Fit: Cause I used to run cross country when I was younger in high school and I never had muscle definition in my legs.
- 27:24Author of " Fit: And I looked down, I'm oh my gosh, I have muscle definition.
- 27:27Author of " Fit: And it's funny cause I never noticed it.
- 27:28Author of " Fit: It wasn't until I was drying off and I thought that guy's not crazy.
- 27:32Author of " Fit: I did what he told me to do and I have muscle definition.
- 27:35Author of " Fit: So that's why when I walked into my husband's office, I said, do you do that?
- 27:38Author of " Fit: And he says, that's crazy and I said okay I said that's what I thought and I said, but it works It does actually, if he likes lift somewhere out there, and I don't know exactly where you'd find it, but there's a quote or a small snippet from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was like, the bodybuilder King.
- 27:55Author of " Fit: And he was talking exactly about that.
- 27:57Author of " Fit: I've ran across it just recently.
- 27:59Author of " Fit: I was like, oh, that's interesting.
- 28:00Author of " Fit: Cause that's a long time ago too.
- 28:01Author of " Fit: And don't make Mr.
- 28:02Author of " Fit: Olympia, without having valid information to support It.
- 28:07Author of " Fit: Exactly.
- 28:07Author of " Fit: How do you think stepping out of one's comfort zone and trying new activities can benefit women especially in midlife?
- 28:15Author of " Fit: Whoop, I think in lots of ways.
- 28:17Author of " Fit: But probably, the biggest way is that when you do something that you didn't think you could do, or something that is uncomfortable, whatever it is.
- 28:26Author of " Fit: Like somebody I work with, she's wants to get on a standup paddleboard.
- 28:30Author of " Fit: And I was like, get on the standup paddleboard.
- 28:32Author of " Fit: She's like, well, I, you know.
- 28:33Author of " Fit: I was like, just get on the standup paddleboard.
- 28:35Author of " Fit: What's going to happen?
- 28:36Author of " Fit: You're going to fall off.
- 28:37Author of " Fit: Thing is that when we do something that we.
- 28:40Author of " Fit: haven't done before, or we didn't think we could do, or it's a little bit of a push.
- 28:44Author of " Fit: We never come back to the person we were before.
- 28:46Author of " Fit: It's like a rubber band.
- 28:47Author of " Fit: You stretch a rubber band and you let it go.
- 28:49Author of " Fit: It's never going to come back perfectly small.
- 28:52Author of " Fit: You were always stretching ourselves outside.
- 28:54Author of " Fit: And the more we do that, I think, I believe the more we're willing to experience life.
- 29:00Author of " Fit: The more we're willing to live a freedom life.
- 29:04Author of " Fit: The more we're willing to just live, like flourish, be vibrant.
- 29:08Author of " Fit: Those things really matter.
- 29:09Author of " Fit: Like having that, I'm not going to use the word outlook, energy, like having that energy changes stuff.
- 29:16Author of " Fit: It just makes stuff better.
- 29:19Author of " Fit: I'll just put it that way.
- 29:20Author of " Fit: Funner, as You stop living in sidelines start living on the field.
- 29:25Author of " Fit: Nice, nice I like that.
- 29:28Author of " Fit: I like that a lot.
- 29:29Author of " Fit: That's so true too....
- 29:30Author of " Fit: .
- 29:30Author of " Fit: For many years I would sit there like so and so because they look so happy doing whatever it was that they were doing that I wanted to do.
- 29:39Author of " Fit: And I would ask myself, why aren't you doing that?
- 29:41Author of " Fit: Why are you wishing you could be like so and so?
- 29:44Author of " Fit: What makes you different than so and so that appears to be happy?
- 29:48Author of " Fit: Yeah, and it's so true.
- 29:50Author of " Fit: I know, and this goes back a long time ago, a long time ago.
- 29:53Author of " Fit: I'm going to say it was probably 25 years ago.
- 29:56Author of " Fit: I was reading this magazine article and it was talking about a river in Texas.
- 30:01Author of " Fit: And this guy had run it and it's a whitewater river in Texas.
- 30:05Author of " Fit: And I said to my partner, I went, oh my gosh if we were younger, I would love to try that.
- 30:11Author of " Fit: And those were my exact words.
- 30:12Author of " Fit: I couldn't even believe, now I can't even believe I said it at the time.
- 30:15Author of " Fit: If we were younger, we should have tried that.
- 30:17Author of " Fit: About five years later, one of my members in my club said, hey, can we try whitewater kayaking?
- 30:23Author of " Fit: And I'm like, sure.
- 30:25Author of " Fit: Like how bad could it be?
- 30:26Author of " Fit: So I get there it was awful.
- 30:28Author of " Fit: Oh, it was awful.
- 30:29Author of " Fit: I thought I was going to drown.
- 30:30Author of " Fit: I couldn't swim, all the things like I was the worst paddler in the world.
- 30:35Author of " Fit: But it caught my attention because it stretched me so far that I was like, wow, I've never run into something that I just simply cannot do because it mentally debilitates me.
- 30:50Author of " Fit: And I just kept coming back.
- 30:52Author of " Fit: And this poor instructor, you would just see it on his face.
- 30:54Author of " Fit: He's oh my gosh, she's back again.
- 30:56Author of " Fit: Like she's the worst person who's ever come here.
- 30:59Author of " Fit: And what happened though was that now 20 years later, it's my passion.
- 31:05Author of " Fit: It's so much fun to me.
- 31:06Author of " Fit: Like I couldn't imagine not doing it.
- 31:09Author of " Fit: But it's because, I kept getting pushed past my comfort zone and it was a tough thing for me to do.
- 31:15Author of " Fit: But in doing that, I found something that I would have never done before.
- 31:19Author of " Fit: And I have friends that I would have never met before.
- 31:22Author of " Fit: And it's just one of those things.
- 31:24Author of " Fit: Like you don't have to do something that you're thinking you're going to die at.
- 31:27Author of " Fit: But you do need to do things that you're like, whoa, huh look at me do that thing.
- 31:32Author of " Fit: It's big piece.
- 31:33Author of " Fit: huge.
- 31:34Author of " Fit: And, my husband and I were watching this netflix movie.
- 31:37Author of " Fit: It's, Diane Nyan.
- 31:38Author of " Fit: And I just told my you know what, regardless to whatever they don't want to say that she really, swam from Cuba to Florida.
- 31:47Author of " Fit: The Florida Keys, even though she did, because there's all these rules that say she didn't do.
- 31:52Author of " Fit: I said, but the bottom line is she did.
- 31:55Author of " Fit: And she was 64 when she did it.
- 31:57Author of " Fit: And that to me is so empowering because it just showed that she became stronger and stronger with every single fail.
- 32:07Author of " Fit: And she'd been trying this since, 30 years prior, when she was younger and stronger and resilient and she failed.
- 32:13Author of " Fit: But it took her five times and she finally did it.
- 32:16Author of " Fit: And so, don't underestimate what you can do if you really want to do it.
- 32:22Author of " Fit: Yeah, so true and yeah that was a very powerful movie.
- 32:26Author of " Fit: And a very powerful, not just movie, but story.
- 32:29Author of " Fit: A very powerful woman.
- 32:30Author of " Fit: Just, I was just taken back.
- 32:32Author of " Fit: I told my husband, I, remember every fail.
- 32:34Author of " Fit: I remember seeing it on TV and I said, and now seeing it from a different lens I'm older now, it's empowering.
- 32:43Author of " Fit: It's super empowering With that said, have you ever had a woman that said, I absolutely would love to do this, but I can't do it.
- 32:53Author of " Fit: And now she's a leader.
- 32:55Author of " Fit: This thing that she said she could not do she's a powerhouse she's rocking it.
- 32:59Author of " Fit: Other than yourself, cause you already gave that story.
- 33:02Author of " Fit: Aw, yeah I know.
- 33:03Author of " Fit: I, yes and and this a story that I probably shouldn't tell but I'm going to.
- 33:08Author of " Fit: So, I have a client who, when she first came to me.
- 33:12Author of " Fit: To all you listeners, I apologize my dog is chewing on a bone and I'm trying just quiet her down, and it's impossible.
- 33:20Author of " Fit: So I have a client who comes to me and when she did, she said that her goal was to be able to walk down the stairs one foot after another, solid, have balance, without hanging onto the handrail.
- 33:37Author of " Fit: So this is her goal a year and a half ago.
- 33:40Author of " Fit: And so about eh three months ago, she's with me in Costa Rica.
- 33:45Author of " Fit: We have a bit of a, we have a bit of a moment.
- 33:48Author of " Fit: We're in a raft and the raft, so everybody listening, this has never happened before.
- 33:53Author of " Fit: It will never happen again, but it was funny now.
- 33:55Author of " Fit: So the raft gets stuck against a rock.
- 33:58Author of " Fit: We can't get it off.
- 34:00Author of " Fit: It's there.
- 34:01Author of " Fit: So I've got all these people in my raft.
- 34:03Author of " Fit: It's myself and a guide.
- 34:04Author of " Fit: So we get them off the raft onto a big rock in the middle of the river.
- 34:09Author of " Fit: And she's one of those people.
- 34:10Author of " Fit: So she climbs onto that rock.
- 34:12Author of " Fit: She then stands on that rock in the middle of that river and then moves down to the other raft.
- 34:18Author of " Fit: It was an in the middle of the river rescue.
- 34:21Author of " Fit: And we were talking afterwards and she's oh my gosh, that was intense, but I think I have a new goal.
- 34:26Author of " Fit: And that goal is to be able to do that anytime I need to.
- 34:29Author of " Fit: And I said to her, I went, do you remember what your original goal was with me?
- 34:33Author of " Fit: She's like no, I said, your original goal was to be able to walk down a set of stairs one foot after another without grasping onto a handrail.
- 34:43Author of " Fit: And here you are, you're in the middle of a class four river, you get out of a raft, you balance on a rock, and you get down on the other side.
- 34:50Author of " Fit: I'm like, you are a rock star, literally and figuratively.
- 34:54Author of " Fit: So to me that was an extreme situation, but wow, she could have frozen.
- 35:00Author of " Fit: There were other people in that raft that froze.
- 35:02Author of " Fit: Believe me, they just froze and we just had to deal with it.
- 35:06Author of " Fit: She did it.
- 35:07Author of " Fit: That's huge.
- 35:09Author of " Fit: That's super huge.
- 35:10Author of " Fit: And one other, because not everybody can relate to being on a raft in the middle of a river and she couldn't either, quite frankly.
- 35:17Author of " Fit: But there's another one where one of the ladies who came with me in the book, I talk about the view from the top of the mountain.
- 35:25Author of " Fit: She came with me on the first retreat and when she got to that retreat, she didn't know any of us.
- 35:29Author of " Fit: She'd never met us before.
- 35:30Author of " Fit: She'd met us on zoom, but she'd never met us in person.
- 35:33Author of " Fit: And she told me, she said, my kids are really uncomfortable that I'm here.
- 35:37Author of " Fit: They told me that I shouldn't go.
- 35:39Author of " Fit: And they're like, where are you going?
- 35:40Author of " Fit: And what are you doing?
- 35:42Author of " Fit: And she said, I need to be very careful.
- 35:44Author of " Fit: And I may not be able to do all these things.
- 35:46Author of " Fit: So I'm like, okay, no problem.
- 35:48Author of " Fit: Let's just, do what you do.
- 35:49Author of " Fit: Are you kidding me?
- 35:50Author of " Fit: She was leading the pack.
- 35:52Author of " Fit: She was at the top of the mountain.
- 35:53Author of " Fit: She's like cheering everybody on.
- 35:55Author of " Fit: That's it.
- 35:56Author of " Fit: Like life gets so big when you get to play like that.
- 36:01Author of " Fit: That's amazing.
- 36:02Author of " Fit: and I think.
- 36:03Author of " Fit: that these women, what happened is, in this situation, they removed themselves from who they thought they were and become who they really are.
- 36:15Author of " Fit: Yeah, that's a really good way of putting it.
- 36:17Author of " Fit: Cause it's true.
- 36:18Author of " Fit: Because we do tend to play safe a lot of times.
- 36:21Author of " Fit: And when we push back a little bit, doesn't have to be big, right?
- 36:25Author of " Fit: Like you don't have to be trying to drown yourself in the middle of the river.
- 36:28Author of " Fit: You just push back a little bit and you just stretch so much you become super women.
- 36:35Author of " Fit: I think all of my clients are superwomen, It's just so amazing.
- 36:36Author of " Fit: And most of your clients are women over the age of 50 am I correct?
- 36:42Author of " Fit: Yes, so I think my youngest person is 49.
- 36:46Author of " Fit: My probably my oldest client is about 75.
- 36:49Author of " Fit: She came with me on, we went to the Smoky Mountains last year.
- 36:53Author of " Fit: She did every single one of those hikes.
- 36:56Author of " Fit: She rocked it?
- 36:56Author of " Fit: like nobody's business.
- 36:59Author of " Fit: That's empowering.
- 37:00Author of " Fit: There you go.
- 37:01Author of " Fit: It is.
- 37:01Author of " Fit: It's so empowering because you find that sometimes women, once we get in the menopause years, we start to say, oh, I can't do this because I could have osteoporosis.
- 37:11Author of " Fit: I got to take care of my bones.
- 37:13Author of " Fit: But here are women that are saying, you know what?
- 37:15Author of " Fit: I'm going to prevent that because I'm going to be fit and I'm not going to limit my freedom because this could happen.
- 37:26Author of " Fit: Yeah, you know, things happen.
- 37:28Author of " Fit: Things happen in life and a lot of times they happen when we're really not having much fun.
- 37:32Author of " Fit: Could get up the couch, trip on the dog, break your hip All right.
- 37:39Author of " Fit: Exactly I know somebody who just grabbed her suitcase off a rack and ripped her shoulder.
- 37:46Author of " Fit: I'm like, well, hopefully you were somewhere fun doing that.
- 37:50Author of " Fit: Yeah.
- 37:52Author of " Fit: I absolutely love your book.
- 37:54Author of " Fit: As I mentioned to you before our recording, I love your book.
- 37:57Author of " Fit: It was very well written, very inspirational.
- 38:01Author of " Fit: And what I loved about it was that you didn't have these rock hard, you did have some women that were fit.
- 38:07Author of " Fit: And just wanted to move to the next level.
- 38:10Author of " Fit: Maybe do something a little bit more adventurous, more, rewarding per se in a community.
- 38:16Author of " Fit: But then you also have these women that were couch potatoes per se, or not really couch potatoes, but they were powerhouses.
- 38:22Author of " Fit: They were rocking it in the business world and spent too much time in their chair that unfortunately they were out of shape.
- 38:29Author of " Fit: And working with you allowed them the opportunity to turn into somebody different I love it.
- 38:37Author of " Fit: And the other thing that I thought was interesting and I, can't remember the actual lady that you wrote about in the book.
- 38:41Author of " Fit: But you talked about this woman who owned her own business.
- 38:44Author of " Fit: She was involved in, I believe her church.
- 38:47Author of " Fit: And she was your go to person because she got everything done.
- 38:51Author of " Fit: And if you added something to her layer of to do list, she got that done too.
- 38:56Author of " Fit: But she wasn't taking care of herself.
- 38:58Author of " Fit: And working with you, you allowed her to prioritize self-care then everything else Yeah self-care is, it's funny.
- 39:07Author of " Fit: We've been, it's like self-care is fluffy.
- 39:10Author of " Fit: self-care is not fluffy.
- 39:11Author of " Fit: Self-care is, doing the things that we know we need to do to be able to do the things that we want to do forever.
- 39:18Author of " Fit: That's self-care.
- 39:18Author of " Fit: Fit, fit, is freedom, is self-care.
- 39:21Author of " Fit: It's basically what it is.
- 39:23Author of " Fit: It's putting yourself first so that you can do all the other things.
- 39:29Author of " Fit: It's true and if anybody's listening, thinking, oh, but isn't that selfish to put yourself first?
- 39:34Author of " Fit: The truth is that if we don't, those people that we love, that we're caring for are going to be having to take care of us.
- 39:40Author of " Fit: So yeah, but if we put ourselves first, then they're going to be able to play with us for a very long time.
- 39:46Author of " Fit: Kelly, what advice would you give that listener right now who's listening or watching right now and says, I'd love to do that, but.
- 39:56Author of " Fit: What would you tell her?
- 39:57Author of " Fit: What would be the first thing that she should do right now to eliminate the but and move forward Hum yeah so there's lots of buts.
- 40:07Author of " Fit: There's usually no time.
- 40:09Author of " Fit: I don't know what to do.
- 40:11Author of " Fit: I've got too many injuries.
- 40:12Author of " Fit: I have to throw in the towel, that kind of stuff.
- 40:14Author of " Fit: So the first thing I would say is create what I love to call an MDM, which is a minimum daily movement.
- 40:22Author of " Fit: And that minimum daily movement is going to be so small that you are sure that it is useless.
- 40:28Author of " Fit: Okay.
- 40:28Author of " Fit: Because when you can do something like, let's say it's just like five minutes of mobility and five minutes of walking, like that's pretty small.
- 40:37Author of " Fit: We can all do it.
- 40:38Author of " Fit: You cannot tell me that you don't have time for that one.
- 40:41Author of " Fit: But if you do it, and you do it consistently five days a week and you do it for a month.
- 40:48Author of " Fit: What's going to happen is that even though you're sure like, I guess I'm going to add a second piece to this in just a second, but let's just say you do it for a month.
- 40:58Author of " Fit: What's going to happen is at the end of that month, you're going to be a little bored with that.
- 41:02Author of " Fit: And instead of giving up, like so many of us have done on so many different diets and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 41:12Author of " Fit: We've got a fire, right?
- 41:14Author of " Fit: We have a little bit of a habit started there.
- 41:16Author of " Fit: So then we step it up, maybe we step it up to 20 minutes.
- 41:20Author of " Fit: Maybe you step it up to 30 minutes.
- 41:22Author of " Fit: But what you're going to find is if you're willing to give yourself that gift of movement for a month, then the bug is going to bite and you're going to keep moving.
- 41:35Author of " Fit: And you're going to start finding new ways of dealing with this.
- 41:38Author of " Fit: And you have to, and I don't like the word have to, but you're going to have to add a little fun into this because if it's boring, If it's not fun, it is not sustainable.
- 41:48Author of " Fit: So you have to find a few things that you enjoy doing.
- 41:50Author of " Fit: And if you are somebody like some of my people who tell me, there's really nothing I like to do that involves exercise.
- 41:57Author of " Fit: Then you need to think outside the box.
- 42:00Author of " Fit: And just start like being aware.
- 42:03Author of " Fit: One of my clients lives in Hawaii and she said to me the other day, we were on a call and she's oh my gosh, all of a sudden I realized that she can't stand up paddle board anymore because she can't carry her paddle board down to the water.
- 42:14Author of " Fit: She had some problems.
- 42:16Author of " Fit: She went oh, I could just go rent one of those paddle boards that's already down there.
- 42:20Author of " Fit: Thinking outside of the box.
- 42:22Author of " Fit: You're going to have to start thinking outside a little bit and having some fun.
- 42:26Author of " Fit: And then add to that when you're ready.
- 42:29Author of " Fit: Add to that a little bit of nutrition because food matters.
- 42:33Author of " Fit: Add to that a community because community matters.
- 42:36Author of " Fit: Add to that some accountability if you need it.
- 42:39Author of " Fit: But start somewhere where you know you're willing to do it.
- 42:42Author of " Fit: And you have to have a reason.
- 42:44Author of " Fit: It's that North Star.
- 42:45Author of " Fit: You have to have a reason.
- 42:46Author of " Fit: The reason could be as small as I don't want to fade away, which is really big actually, it sounds small, but it's huge.
- 42:55Author of " Fit: Or it can be as big as I want to do something stinking amazing that I've never done before.
- 43:01Author of " Fit: And I've got to start somewhere.
- 43:02Author of " Fit: Kelly, how can people learn more about you and maybe even begin to work with you?
- 43:08Author of " Fit: So my website's always the easiest place, which is just fitisfreedom.com.
- 43:13Author of " Fit: And from there you can find, all the socials and all the stuff.
- 43:17Author of " Fit: And also, in your show notes, we will have a free copy of my book.

- 43:33Author of " Fit: So you can get the book for free.
- 43:35Author of " Fit: Follow it, even though it's free, there's value there.
- 43:38Author of " Fit: And you're going to be able to walk away with not just inspiration, which I think is nice, but you walk away with a plan too.
- 43:46Author of " Fit: Which is probably, you know the gold.
- 43:49Author of " Fit: For anyone who is thinking about downloading it, you need to download it.
- 43:53Author of " Fit: This is an amazing book, a beautiful book.
- 43:56Author of " Fit: Well written.
- 43:57Author of " Fit: It was as if though you were sitting up there talking to me the whole time.
- 44:01Author of " Fit: It was very quick, easy, very concise.
- 44:04Author of " Fit: I loved it.
- 44:05Author of " Fit: Love the book.
- 44:06Author of " Fit: And I recommend any woman, every woman or man, read the book.
- 44:10Author of " Fit: It's great stories and awesome resource.

- 44:22Author of " Fit: Oh, there's two in the works.
- 44:24Author of " Fit: What am I thinking I finished that book and I went, well, I don't have to do that again.
- 44:29Author of " Fit: And the next day I woke up and I went, oh, I have a couple ideas.
- 44:34Author of " Fit: Any future projects you're working on other than books?
- 44:37Author of " Fit: Other than books probably the project for this year, is to really like, within my group program, we have the Fit is Freedom course.
- 44:46Author of " Fit: And we're redoing the course.
- 44:48Author of " Fit: So that's a big piece.
- 44:50Author of " Fit: And then really the rest of this year, my big project is to simplify my life.
- 44:55Author of " Fit: So that I have more and more time to play and people would be like really Kelly how can you have more time to play?
- 45:02Author of " Fit: Because it's just it matters.
- 45:05Author of " Fit: So those are the big projects.
