- 0:01Today's message is on 1 John 3, 4 -10. I was
- 0:12trying to do the whole chapter and summarize
- 0:16it, but I could not, could not just get past
- 0:19these six verses. So this is a sermon in itself,
- 0:22and we could probably just do a sermon on three
- 0:25verses, but I think just in the sense of a summary,
- 0:29these six were best. And then we will finish
- 0:32the rest of the chapter next week. Let us pray.
- 0:37Father, I want to thank you so much for your
- 0:38faithfulness and goodness. Thank you, Lord, for
- 0:41your word. Lord, as we go through these six verses,
- 0:45we are asking you, Holy Spirit, that you would
- 0:47guide us in all truth, that you would illuminate
- 0:50our minds and our hearts to the truth of what
- 0:53you are sharing here. Lord, may we grasp the
- 1:00importance of our walk with you and that we would...
- 1:06commit to living rightly, and that those who
- 1:10do live rightly, live rightly because you are
- 1:13righteous. And so give us your wisdom, Lord,
- 1:17as we seek you through this, and may you be honored
- 1:22and glorified, and may the word be rightly divided,
- 1:26and the full counsel of your word be. taught
- 1:29and spoken for your glory in Jesus name amen
- 1:32there's a lot of there's a lot here in these
- 1:34in these six verses it's it's kind of we read
- 1:40this and a lot of times we quote some of this
- 1:42stuff because it's got some tantalizing statements
- 1:45and I want to settle us in the truth of what
- 1:49John is trying to say here and it's really the
- 1:52association of the believer to Christ and the
- 1:56non -believer to the creature of sin, the fallen
- 2:05one, Satan. And so there's an association based
- 2:10upon what you see in the life of each person.
- 2:13So when we're dealing with the issue of a believer,
- 2:16you should be seeing this type of living. When
- 2:19you look at a non -believer, he reflects or she
- 2:22reflects the living of rebellion. And that's
- 2:25really the connection here. So we're going to
- 2:28take some time to go through this. And I pray
- 2:33that you start to unfold. There's a lot of scripture
- 2:37we're going to go through in order to support
- 2:39what John is trying to say so we can clarify
- 2:41these things. There's some Old Testament. There's
- 2:43some New Testament. So get ready to do a little
- 2:45bit of walking, okay? First thing I want to do
- 2:50is give you this principle. Christ came to destroy
- 2:54sin, and when Christ comes again, he will take
- 2:58us home. And that's a pretty simple, very simple
- 3:00truth. It's the reality that the whole reason
- 3:03that Christ came the first time was to destroy
- 3:07sin. And the reason why he's going to come the
- 3:10second time is to come and get his people. Okay?
- 3:14Very plain, very to the point, and John clarifies
- 3:17this. In Hebrews 9, 26b through 28, But as it
- 3:24is, he has appeared once for all at the end of
- 3:29the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of
- 3:33himself. And just as it is appointed for man
- 3:37to die once, and after that comes judgment, so
- 3:41Christ, having been offered once to bear the
- 3:45sins of many, will appear a second time, not
- 3:48to deal with sin, but to save those. who are
- 3:53eagerly waiting for him. And a lot of times we
- 3:57think about the second coming and it's all about
- 3:59his reign. No, it's about our rescue. He came
- 4:04to rescue us from sin. Now he's going to come
- 4:06to rescue us from death into eternity. And so
- 4:11I think we forget about the reality of the power
- 4:15of the rescue of Christ. So in 1 John 3, 4 -10,
- 4:20Well, specifically 1 John 3, 4 through 6. Okay,
- 4:25we'll get to the others in a minute. Everyone
- 4:28who makes practice of sinning also practices
- 4:32lawlessness. So if Christ came to rescue us from
- 4:38sin, how should we live? And if Christ is coming
- 4:42to rescue us and take us home to be with him
- 4:44for eternity, again, what should you be doing
- 4:47now? And so John starts off this statement with
- 4:53the issue of practicing sin, makes a practice
- 4:56of. And then literally that phrase that we use
- 5:00in English means to do sin. That's all this word
- 5:04means. Makes a practice is a single word in the
- 5:07Greek, and it just means to do. To do sin. So
- 5:13everyone who makes practice of sinning also practices
- 5:17lawlessness. What's interesting is... Now you
- 5:21see this new word that's associated with sin
- 5:25called lawlessness. And we're going to define
- 5:27these words in a minute. Sin is lawlessness.
- 5:32You know that he appeared, in verse 5, you know
- 5:35that he appeared in order to take sins away or
- 5:39take away sins. And in him there is no sin. So
- 5:43what was the point of Christ's first coming?
- 5:45To take away sin. That was it. That's the main
- 5:49mission. to take away sin, to deal with the sin
- 5:53of his people, to deal with the sin and the consequences
- 5:57of sin and reality, to restore to himself a people.
- 6:04And so you see that his first coming was specifically
- 6:07to take away sin. Why? Because in him there is
- 6:10no sin. He's the only one who could take away
- 6:13sin. No one else and nothing else could take
- 6:16away your sin. Now, No one who abides in him
- 6:21keeps on sinning. And no one who keeps on sinning
- 6:26has either seen him or known him. Now this is
- 6:31important because we have churches full of people
- 6:35who live as if they don't know Jesus. And because
- 6:39of bad evangelicalism and the preaching of a
- 6:43false gospel, we think that a prayer has been
- 6:48enough. to save somebody. And so we have pews
- 6:52that are full of people who have just said a
- 6:55prayer, and as a result of their prayer, they
- 6:57think they're in, but they live as if they aren't.
- 7:01And so John makes a clarification here. No one
- 7:05who abides in him keeps on sinning. In other
- 7:09words, there is a process in my life where I
- 7:12sin less. I don't become less a sinner. I just
- 7:17sin less. The work of progressive sanctification
- 7:20in my life takes out of me what God does not
- 7:24want, and he instills in me Christ -like character.
- 7:28He deeply plants it in me. And so I become more
- 7:33like Jesus over time. And the pinnacle, total
- 7:38pinnacle completeness of that work is the resurrection
- 7:43of the dead. When my body will be like his body.
- 7:47That's the finish. That's the capstone to the
- 7:51whole thing. No one keeps on sinning has either
- 7:54seen him or known him. What's that mean? I'll
- 7:59say it this way. None of all that abide in him
- 8:03sins. All who sins, none seen or knows him. None.
- 8:13You can't say I know him. and live like you don't.
- 8:18And so we need to really start to understand
- 8:20the reality of the fruit. Many of us, when we
- 8:23come across words that are used to describe sin,
- 8:26we read about four particular words used in the
- 8:30Scripture. Those four are transgression, iniquity,
- 8:34sin, and lawlessness. These four words, though
- 8:39they are all sin and expressions of sin, are
- 8:43different, not only in definition, but in act.
- 8:47So when you read these particular words, I want
- 8:49you to understand what God is saying concerning
- 8:51the condition of the heart and its actions. All
- 8:57four of these express a deep hatred of God. Okay?
- 9:01A deep hatred of God. Transgression means to
- 9:05rebel or revolt against God. That's transgression.
- 9:11Iniquity means to bend, twist, or distort. Perversity
- 9:16or depravity. That's iniquity. Sin means to miss
- 9:22the mark, the way, or the standard. And then
- 9:26lawlessness or lawless means to break, violate,
- 9:30or have contempt for the law of God and to commit
- 9:34wickedness. Because all deal with a different
- 9:37attitude, a different mindset, and though it
- 9:42is all sin in general, when you talk about these
- 9:45particular words, And it's unique because when
- 9:48you read Daniel 9, 24, it literally mentions
- 9:52three of them. So we know that they're different.
- 9:58Here's something else we need to be reminded
- 10:01of. We are the righteousness of God in Christ.
- 10:04You are the righteousness of God. And if you
- 10:08are the righteousness of God, how should we live?
- 10:10In 2 Corinthians 5, 21, in him we might become
- 10:21the righteousness of God. And if we are the righteousness
- 10:25of God, then we should live that way. 1 John
- 10:313, 7 -8. Little children. Again, we talked about
- 10:35this last week, why John uses this term. And
- 10:39literally, the word in the Greek is little children.
- 10:42He's speaking to us as a father would speak to
- 10:45his children. Let no one deceive you. Let no
- 10:49one cause you to stray or lead you into error.
- 10:55Let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness
- 11:02is righteous as he is righteous. And this is
- 11:06the term whoever is the word pas, and it literally
- 11:09means all. All who practice righteousness is
- 11:14righteous as he is righteous. And what does this
- 11:16mean? Have we really thought about... What it
- 11:19means that we are righteous. You're righteous
- 11:24because he's righteous. Your righteousness is
- 11:29fully on Christ. He has bestowed his righteousness
- 11:34upon you. You are righteous because he is righteous.
- 11:38And if we are righteous, then we should be doing
- 11:41righteousness. And what is righteousness? Righteousness
- 11:45is the understanding of doing right. To do right.
- 11:51It's all it is. Are we doing right? What is right?
- 11:57To live as Christ lived. To obey as Christ obeyed.
- 12:02But pastor, I have a problem with that because
- 12:04I'm not Jesus. No, you're not. But he lives in
- 12:07you. The very, very power that raised Jesus from
- 12:11the dead lives in you. And so we can walk in
- 12:17victorious living because we are the righteousness
- 12:21of God. In Christ. Like I said, this term whoever
- 12:28also is translated from the definitive article
- 12:33in the Greek, which is the. In English, we translate
- 12:37it in an idiom called the who or the one. So
- 12:41when you see whoever sometimes, it's mentioning
- 12:44the sinning one is the idea here. Or the one
- 12:49who sins is what John is using here. Very interesting
- 12:55term. When we look at the definitive article
- 12:58and we look at English and we're like, whoever,
- 13:01and I'm like, doesn't matter how far I try to
- 13:03find it, you can't find it. And so what they
- 13:06do in English, though, is they do help us understand
- 13:09in the phraseology of these terms by bringing
- 13:15an idiom in, the who or the one. And so whoever
- 13:20makes practice, the one who practices. The one
- 13:26who does practice sin is how it could be translated.
- 13:33Makes practice, to do, commit, to produce. Of
- 13:37sinning is of the devil. Now this is where you
- 13:42get this term, and many times we know this because
- 13:45we have a tendency to use these verses in our
- 13:49explanation. And what he's doing here is he is
- 13:53associating the sinner to the one Who sinned
- 13:58from the beginning. And we're going to see that
- 14:01in a minute. Which is interesting. Which is really
- 14:06interesting. Now, the one, whoever makes practice
- 14:13of sinning is of the devil. This word, of the
- 14:16devil, means to depend upon in thought and action.
- 14:21To think and act like he did. In other words,
- 14:27I want to be just like him. Have you ever heard
- 14:30the term when your child says, I want to be just
- 14:32like dad? Well, that's what lost people are doing
- 14:37without realizing it. And that's why Jesus uses
- 14:41the term, you are of your father, the devil.
- 14:45You think like him, and you act like him. It's
- 14:48the same idea. They want to be just like dad.
- 14:53And so, look what it says after that. For the
- 14:57devil has been sinning from the beginning. What?
- 15:02Help us understand this. Well, we're going to
- 15:05see that in Isaiah 14 in a minute. But understand
- 15:09that the devil has been sinning from the beginning.
- 15:14And yes, even though this term diabolos translates
- 15:17as accuser, the thought that John is bringing
- 15:23forth here is the same thought that Jesus brought
- 15:25forth in the gospel. He is associating those
- 15:30who do evil with the one who is evil. And we
- 15:35see that in Genesis 3, which we're also going
- 15:37to recognize in a minute. The reason the Son
- 15:40of God appeared, which is from verse 5, was to
- 15:45destroy the works of the devil. So why did Jesus
- 15:50appear? We know in verse 5 it's to take away
- 15:53sin. But what is the work of the devil? Sin.
- 16:02And what we end up reading is in Romans 6. 6
- 16:08through 7, if you would turn there. Romans 6,
- 16:126 through 7. What is the reality of Christ destroying
- 16:25sin? Destroying the works of the devil. We know
- 16:29that our old self was crucified with him in order
- 16:32that the body of sin might be brought to nothing.
- 16:36So that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
- 16:41For one who has died has been set free from sin.
- 16:46We are free. from the works of the devil. Jesus
- 16:51destroyed the works of the devil. The reality
- 16:55is that sin has been destroyed. And so, Colossians
- 17:012. You guys can turn there. Colossians 2, 13
- 17:14and 15. And you, who were dead in your trespasses
- 17:20and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made
- 17:24alive together with him, having forgiven all
- 17:28our trespasses by canceling the record of debt
- 17:33that stood against us with its legal demands
- 17:36this he set aside nailing it to the cross the
- 17:45reality of our debt has been paid because of
- 17:49sin now when we look at the reality of this of
- 17:53helping us understand what the works of the devil
- 17:56are go to genesis 3 And here is the very beginning
- 18:02of what we see in the works in Genesis 3. You
- 18:09guys know what the work was. He's in the garden.
- 18:12He's having a conversation with the woman. Her
- 18:15husband is standing right next to her as he watches
- 18:17her do this. Never attempts to stop her. Even
- 18:25though God had told him before he created the
- 18:28woman. Adam, do not eat of the tree of the knowledge
- 18:32of good and evil. For the day you eat of it,
- 18:33you shall surely die. That was given to Adam
- 18:38before the woman was formed and created from
- 18:42the rib. And so we see that this serpent, the
- 18:49dragon of old, is having a conversation with
- 18:52her at the tree. And he deceives her. He says
- 18:59to her, You will surely not die, verse 4, chapter
- 19:043, for God knows that when you eat of it, your
- 19:07eyes will be opened and you will be like God,
- 19:09knowing good and evil. Really, we know what Satan's
- 19:18desire was. We'll read that in 14. But here's
- 19:23something I want us to see, because this is going
- 19:25to help us in the second part, or in the rest
- 19:28of this chapter, verse 9 and 10 of 1 John 3.
- 19:32Look what he says to the serpent. Because you
- 19:40have done this, cursed are you above all livestock
- 19:46and above all beasts of the field. On your belly
- 19:49you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the
- 19:53days of your life. I will put enmity between
- 19:57you and the woman, between your offspring and
- 20:02her offspring. He shall bruise your head. And
- 20:06you shall bruise his heel. And this word offspring
- 20:08is plural, some would say. I agree with it. I
- 20:17see the plurality there. Between your offsprings,
- 20:20between your seeds. And her seed is singular,
- 20:26meaning Christ. And he shall bruise your head.
- 20:32He shall crush your head and you shall bruise
- 20:34his heel. And we're going to see this understanding
- 20:37of seed in a minute. Now, turn to Isaiah 14.
- 20:52And I want you to see, verse 12, the pride, the
- 21:03sin of the creature. Isaiah 14, 12. How you are
- 21:13fallen from heaven, O day star, son of dawn.
- 21:17How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid
- 21:22the nations low. How did he lay the nations low?
- 21:33Deception. He deceived. That's what he does.
- 21:39We know that because you can read it in Revelation.
- 21:42Chapter 13 and chapter 20. He deceives the nations.
- 21:46That's his goal, is to deceive the nations. How
- 21:49did he deceive the nations? God is not good if
- 21:51he's keeping something from you. You're not going
- 21:56to die. Deception. Laid the nations low by sin.
- 22:05By introducing rebellion. So you said in your
- 22:13heart, I will ascend to heaven. Above the stars
- 22:16of God I will set my throne on high and I will
- 22:19sit on the mount of the assembly in the far reaches
- 22:23of the north. I will ascend above the heights
- 22:27of the clouds and I will make myself like the
- 22:30most high. You will be just like God, knowing
- 22:35good and evil. But you were brought down to Sheol,
- 22:44to the far reaches of the pit. Those who see
- 22:49you will stare at you and ponder over you. Isn't
- 22:57that interesting? So we know a little bit about
- 23:03the reality of the works, and that was to introduce
- 23:05rebellion to the creatures called man and woman.
- 23:14The one thing that God created that was bearing
- 23:18his image. Now I want you to get this. He gets
- 23:23kicked out of heaven, thrown down to the ground.
- 23:27And what's the first thing he does? I mean, I
- 23:32thought I was the most beautiful. I was going
- 23:34to be above the most high. You want to do that
- 23:38to me? That's what I'm thinking. He's thinking.
- 23:42So he attacks the very thing that bears the image
- 23:44of God and introduces deception. And they take
- 23:53the bait. They take the bait. So God, Christ,
- 24:02came to destroy what has happened. Now you can
- 24:08see the relation between those who are lost and
- 24:11don't know Christ and Satan. They really want
- 24:17the same things. I mean, I did until Christ saved
- 24:22me, until Christ made me alive, until I came
- 24:26to the realization through his regeneration in
- 24:29my life, the renewal of my life, the truth of
- 24:33his word making me alive that I saw the deception.
- 24:40I will never be him, though we live without Christ
- 24:46as if we will be. I mean, just do it, right?
- 24:52That's the slogan. Or in school, when my oldest
- 25:01son was in school, it was all about self -esteem.
- 25:06Everybody's trying to make everybody a god, until
- 25:09they realize they're really bad at it. It's only
- 25:14by the power of Christ, right? The children of
- 25:17God practice righteousness and love one another.
- 25:21What do the children of the devil do? They hate
- 25:24righteousness, they practice lawlessness, and
- 25:27they hate one another. In Romans 12, 9 -10, let
- 25:31love be genuine. Abhor what is evil. Hold fast
- 25:36to what is good. Love one another with brotherly
- 25:39affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
- 25:42This is the build -up for next week. So what
- 25:46is he doing? He's making a very stark contrast
- 25:50between the believer and the non -believer. 1
- 25:58John 3, 9 -10, no one, again this word is pas,
- 26:04all, no one born of God, no one begotten, no
- 26:09one caused, no one produced by God makes practice
- 26:14of sinning. That's what he means here. Geneo,
- 26:18or geneo, it's the English, So if we are born
- 26:29of God, if we are his children, then we don't
- 26:33make practice, we don't do sin on purpose. For
- 26:42God's seed abides in him. Now, what is this term,
- 26:48God's seed? It's really the Holy Spirit abiding
- 26:52within the soul by which we are regenerate and
- 26:55made children of God. That's literally what he's
- 26:59talking about here. The seed is the Holy Spirit.
- 27:03God's Holy Spirit abides in you. And he cannot
- 27:10keep on sinning. Now, what's interesting about
- 27:16this term, dunamai, dunamai is this understanding
- 27:23of to be able or have power. You ever think about
- 27:30why are you so different? Because if God's spirit
- 27:38abides in us, he does not let you keep on sinning.
- 27:44We know because in Hebrews he says that he disciplines
- 27:47those he loves. If he doesn't discipline you,
- 27:49you are an illegitimate child and not a child
- 27:52at all. So the reality is he deals with our stuff.
- 27:58What else do we know about God? That he gives
- 28:02us the power to live rightly because we are the
- 28:06righteousness of God. And the reason why we are
- 28:09the righteousness of God is because Christ is
- 28:11righteous and Christ has bestowed his righteousness
- 28:14upon you. Another stark contrast to those who
- 28:19are not born again. Then he says because. This
- 28:27word is since. Since he has been born of God.
- 28:31You cannot keep on sinning since you've been
- 28:34born of God. If we have been born of God, the
- 28:40ability to continue in sin on purpose with full
- 28:44rebellion and willfulness, it's gone. I don't
- 28:52want to sin. Paul states that in chapter 7 of
- 28:56Romans. Why do I do the things I do not want
- 28:58to do, but the things I hate I keep on doing?
- 29:03Why? I don't want to do this, but the things
- 29:07I want to do, I can't do. battle this war that
- 29:15is going on with me, Paul states. So verse 10
- 29:21continues. John continues to help us to understand
- 29:28the difference between the two. By this it is
- 29:31evident, it is clear, it is apparent, it is visible,
- 29:34it is manifest who exists as the children of
- 29:41God. In other words, you will know them. You
- 29:45will know who are God's children. And Jesus makes
- 29:48this clear. Let me give you a quote from him.
- 29:53He says, a bad tree cannot produce good fruit,
- 29:57nor can a good tree produce bad fruit. You will
- 30:01know them by their fruit. So let's stop playing
- 30:05the Christian game in America and call it what
- 30:09it is. We've got to be sensitive. We've got to
- 30:13be gentle with people. We don't want to offend
- 30:15them. The cross is offensive. It's meant to offend
- 30:20you. There is a cost that was paid on your behalf.
- 30:25The God of all creation put on flesh to become
- 30:28like man, which he created in his own image,
- 30:32to take away sin. It's offensive. It should offend
- 30:40you. It should offend every single person on
- 30:43the face of the earth. And it does. Those who
- 30:46God saves, they love deeply. But those who have
- 30:51rejected God, they hate. As he states in John
- 30:573. So, we then see, again, by this it is apparent
- 31:11who are the children of God and who are the children
- 31:18of the devil. Do you see that? It's pretty clear.
- 31:23He's making a distinction here. If John makes
- 31:26the distinction of the lost and the saved, why
- 31:29do we continue saying churched and unchurched?
- 31:36The church can't do anything apart from Christ.
- 31:40Christ is the one that does all the work. And
- 31:42Christ calls them lost or saved, blind or seeing,
- 31:49dead or alive, old nature, new nature. We don't
- 31:56got to like it, but if God says it, it is what
- 32:00it is. So we know that there is a clear distinction
- 32:05here in the world. There is no in -between. It's
- 32:09interesting. Saw a gentleman talk about his turning
- 32:14away from God. He's a preacher. He calls himself
- 32:17a biblical scholar, but yet he walked away from
- 32:20Jesus. And we talked about that last week. If
- 32:22they were of us, they would have remained with
- 32:24us, but because they're not of us, they didn't
- 32:25remain with us. That means he was never born
- 32:28again. It didn't matter what kind of degree he
- 32:30had. But look at what it says. Who are the children
- 32:39of the devil? Well, we know who the children
- 32:42of God are. We practice righteousness. And we
- 32:48don't continue in our sin because he perseveres
- 32:52us in our life as a saint through progressive
- 32:57sanctification. Look what he says here. This
- 33:03is the distinction. Children of the devil. Whoever,
- 33:07all, whoever does not practice righteousness
- 33:13is not of God. I love John. I got to tell you.
- 33:21He just says it. He just blah. and you're like,
- 33:25well, how do you do that? And you got preachers
- 33:27who are like, I'm not going to preach that. Well,
- 33:28I'm going to preach it. We're going to preach
- 33:30it. We're going to teach it. We're going to talk
- 33:31about it. We have to. Those who practice unrighteousness
- 33:39are not of God. Whoever does not practice righteousness,
- 33:45whoever does not do right is not of God, nor
- 33:51is the one who does not love his brother. And
- 33:54what you're going to see is John is starting
- 33:57to build up the reality of what is the proof?
- 34:00What's the number one proof of those who know
- 34:03God and those who don't? How we love each other.
- 34:15So my challenge to you is this summer, many have
- 34:21been away. Many have gone on vacation. Many have
- 34:27been busy. Many have been working. Many have
- 34:30made reasons or excuses why they're not here.
- 34:35and I contact every single person that's not
- 34:38here. But they shouldn't just hear from pastor.
- 34:44They need to hear from you. Ask them, where have
- 34:50you been? We miss you. We want you back home.
- 34:54Well, I've been busy all summer. Okay, no problem.
- 34:57Is there anything I can do for you? Because you
- 34:59know what happens when people get into the cycle
- 35:01of not coming to church? They stop coming. If
- 35:08you have any questions about that, COVID is a
- 35:10really great example of that. And elders and
- 35:12I were talking about that on Thursday. COVID
- 35:17has affected church, and it has been a permanent
- 35:23effect. And it's not just our church. It's every
- 35:29church. So my challenge to you is, you don't
- 35:34see someone, check in with them. Contact them.
- 35:43Follow up with them. We do a lot of that. You
- 35:51know, they don't come for a week or two. That's
- 35:54okay. After two weeks, you should be making a
- 35:58phone call. So that's my challenge to you. So
- 36:07I hope you can see clearly the difference between
- 36:10the two peoples, the lost and the saved, because
- 36:14that's exactly what John is doing here. Now,
- 36:17if you would, please, let's get ready for communion.
- 36:24I want you to take the time to really be searching
- 36:27your hearts. As we are about to partake of the
- 36:34Lord's Supper, if the elders would come forward,
- 36:36please. This is a very serious moment for us.
- 36:41Not only are we reflecting on the reality of
- 36:43a sacrifice, but you also are reflecting, rejoicing
- 36:46that He's resurrected. This is what we do in
- 36:51remembrance until He comes. So, let's be also
- 36:56thinking and praying about this.
