- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on, everybody. It's Jeff here. I wanted to
- 0:03Speaker 1: let you know that we recorded this podcast episode on Wednesday,
- 0:06Speaker 1: January twenty second, twenty twenty five. By the time you
- 0:10Speaker 1: hear this, some things may have changed here or there,
- 0:12Speaker 1: but we hope you enjoy the show. Welcome to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:50Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world that's right over eleven
- 0:53Speaker 1: and a half years strong. We've got a great show
- 0:55Speaker 1: for you. This week, we are going to be getting
- 0:58Speaker 1: into the Baseball Hall of Fame, talking about some of
- 1:01Speaker 1: the former players who are inducted, who was not inducted
- 1:05Speaker 1: as well, and if you go back in our podcast
- 1:08Speaker 1: speed on our Table talk show. This past week, we're
- 1:11Speaker 1: at the Redding Hot Stovers event where we talked to
- 1:14Speaker 1: Sarge Yes Gary Matthews specifically about scouts in Major League
- 1:19Speaker 1: Baseball should they be part of the Baseball Hall of
- 1:22Speaker 1: Fame at some point down the road. We're also going
- 1:25Speaker 1: to get into the Philadelphia seventy six ers and of
- 1:27Speaker 1: course the Philadelphia Eagles as they are heading to the
- 1:29Speaker 1: NFC Championship Game. Can this be deemed a successful season
- 1:35Speaker 1: for the Philadelphia Eagles. I'm Jeff Warren, I'm here. My
- 1:38Speaker 1: good Boddy, Eric Leonard, how are you doing, Eric, I'm good.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I just want to say, like, the Phillies have had
- 1:44Speaker 2: some awesome nicknames. Yes, I mean Sarge a fake. It's
- 1:49Speaker 2: such a Sarge might be my favorite one. It just
- 1:52Speaker 2: I don't know why. It just matches his face for
- 1:55Speaker 2: some reasons. I was looking at the pictures of the
- 1:57Speaker 2: two of you and I wish I could have went,
- 2:00Speaker 2: But yeah, it look that is one of the coolest
- 2:03Speaker 2: events in the area that I've been to. Yes, I
- 2:06Speaker 2: love it.
- 2:06Speaker 1: The Redding Hot Stovers want to again thank them for
- 2:09Speaker 1: having the PSD podcast show out there to interview not
- 2:13Speaker 1: only Sarge, but interview Veronica Alvarez, who's currently a coach
- 2:17Speaker 1: with the Oakland A's. She is a world champion baseball
- 2:21Speaker 1: player herself, and got to interview Buck Showalter as well.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Buck Showalter a little shy, and I was actually told
- 2:27Speaker 1: that prior to the discussion with him, like he's not
- 2:31Speaker 1: not a big media guy, of course, but even in
- 2:33Speaker 1: the intimate settings that we were in that he was a,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know, little shy. He was. Honestly, he was kind
- 2:39Speaker 1: of timid too. And I was just like, I don't
- 2:41Speaker 1: want to make you feel bad with anything.
- 2:44Speaker 2: That's interesting because I'm trying to think back, like one
- 2:47Speaker 2: the first one I went to, maybe he just needs
- 2:50Speaker 2: a couple of pops like Zinski, who was wide open
- 2:55Speaker 2: to talk. Man, he was he was loose.
- 2:57Speaker 1: He had like three drinks when we were talking to him.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Know, he was putting him down and I talked about
- 3:02Speaker 2: bars and reading and he would leave lit up. I
- 3:04Speaker 2: was like, oh, okay, we got him here. Yeah, but
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know, and Jamie Moyer was super open, you know.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Andre Dawson was a little timid. I feel was a
- 3:12Speaker 2: little timid.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but that was the only one. The one.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Everyone else was really like rare to go.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a it's always a fun event. And again, folks,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you know, not necessarily that you're gonna remember for it
- 3:24Speaker 1: next year or remember it next year at this particular
- 3:27Speaker 1: point in time. But every January, the Redding hot Stovers
- 3:29Speaker 1: have their annual banquet out at the Double Tree Hilton,
- 3:32Speaker 1: their rating Center City reading. It's always a great time
- 3:36Speaker 1: and they got a great silent auction. I did not
- 3:38Speaker 1: win anything. I was none too happy about that. However,
- 3:41Speaker 1: it was a good time. Nonetheless here, so all right,
- 3:45Speaker 1: let's get into this show. This week, the Baseball Hall
- 3:48Speaker 1: of Fame has announced that there are three new inductees
- 3:52Speaker 1: that were elected, Ichiro Suzuki, C. C. Sabbathia, and Billy Wagner.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Eric Billy Wagner getting in year ten, you're shaking your head.
- 4:03Speaker 1: You're like, you're like, oh, boy, he was in the
- 4:07Speaker 1: Redding hot stovers last year. We weren't able to go
- 4:09Speaker 1: last year, but he was there last year. But yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 1: finally got in year ten.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We went through his stats. Was a few weeks ago,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you and I in the show, and if you looked
- 4:23Speaker 2: at the other relievers that were in, it was an
- 4:25Speaker 2: acceptable move to get him in there. But in the moment,
- 4:30Speaker 2: it was like, I don't know about this because Andrew
- 4:32Speaker 2: Jones didn't make it, Carlos Beltran still sitting there. It
- 4:36Speaker 2: just felt kind of like, well, I guess we got
- 4:38Speaker 2: to do it. Yeah, any more chances does he have?
- 4:41Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, who cares? Look at his stats?
- 4:43Speaker 2: But yeah, it was borderline and not the most exciting name.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But the other two were most definitely deserving.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Carlos Beltrand, I mean, look, I wish they could put
- 4:52Speaker 1: a lot more of these guys in forgots. I just
- 4:54Speaker 1: hate the way that this entire situation, they deal with
- 5:00Speaker 1: this and the fact that and look, everybody's been complaining,
- 5:03Speaker 1: bitching and moaning about it, Ichiro Suzuki getting ninety nine
- 5:08Speaker 1: zero point seven percent vote percentage just because one jerk
- 5:12Speaker 1: off wanted to make it all about them, wanted to
- 5:15Speaker 1: make it all about them by saying, you know what,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I was the only one that didn't vote for each row,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you piece of garbage, making it all about you. I
- 5:25Speaker 1: just wish we could get more of these guys in,
- 5:27Speaker 1: to be perfectly honest with you. Look, Andrew Jones, he
- 5:29Speaker 1: should be in, Carlos Beltron should be in, Chase Audley
- 5:32Speaker 1: should be in, and look, these guys will get in eventually.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I just hate the entire process and how it plays out.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Eric. Yeah, because I respect the writers that show their
- 5:42Speaker 2: votes on Twitter. Yeah, I saw a couple of that
- 5:45Speaker 2: last night, the guy from the Athletic did, and you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I like that, just showing what they with, who they
- 5:52Speaker 2: voted for. I think at this point, Rivera's the only
- 5:55Speaker 2: guy that got in unanimously, which the only one of
- 5:57Speaker 2: shows that the process doesn't work is Yeah, Derek Jeter
- 6:00Speaker 2: didn't get in first round, like first one hundred percent,
- 6:03Speaker 2: come on, and he.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Wasn't unanimous either.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Now I think Marianna Rivera is the only one. And
- 6:08Speaker 2: it's just a joke. And I sent you guys last night.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Eachro is like combined stats from Japan because he was
- 6:13Speaker 2: a rookie of twenty seven with the Mariners. Yeah, and
- 6:16Speaker 2: like he's the all time hits leader. If you had
- 6:18Speaker 2: everything up, he had head of our three hundred home runs.
- 6:20Speaker 2: You know, it's just it's it's it's incredible. And like
- 6:24Speaker 2: I said to you guys too, you know, and the
- 6:25Speaker 2: thread for our buddies, I'm pretty sure the guy who
- 6:29Speaker 2: didn't vote for Eachiro voted for Billy Wagner. I'm almost
- 6:33Speaker 2: willing to, oh, yeah, money on it.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely. Look, I mean when you look at at
- 6:38Speaker 1: each row and what he did a one two hundred
- 6:42Speaker 1: and seventy eight hits with a three fifty three batting average,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and that was when he was over in over in Japan.
- 6:49Speaker 1: He comes to Major League Baseball in two thousand and one.
- 6:52Speaker 1: His first season state side, he won Rookie of the
- 6:55Speaker 1: Year and MVP while helping the Mariners to a major
- 6:59Speaker 1: ly Baseball record one hundred and sixteen wins. So, I
- 7:03Speaker 1: mean nineteen major League Baseball seasons, two batting titles, three
- 7:08Speaker 1: thousand eighty nine hits, one four hundred and twenty runs,
- 7:13Speaker 1: five hundred nine stolen bases, and a sixty wins above replacement.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I mean, holy cow, how that How that one guy
- 7:22Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I'm just not gonna do it.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I'm just not going to vote for each ro Oh god,
- 7:26Speaker 1: what a what a jackass?
- 7:28Speaker 2: I mean it screams either Yankees hater kind of yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 2: like Yankees hater kind of rider. I'll just say, it's
- 7:36Speaker 2: just some old white cragley guy that's just on his
- 7:39Speaker 2: way out. He has two years left to before he retires,
- 7:41Speaker 2: and he's just like I'm gonna I don't tell I
- 7:44Speaker 2: don't count the Japanese stats. And it's like, well look
- 7:47Speaker 2: at the real ones, right right, first ballot, one hundred
- 7:50Speaker 2: percent Hall of Fame career. I mean, to me, he
- 7:54Speaker 2: was always one of my favorites, non Philly I said.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I think I said in the show he might be
- 8:00Speaker 2: top three best player of all time. You know, if
- 8:02Speaker 2: you if you really look at everything, like the enormity
- 8:05Speaker 2: of his career. He's like, I mean, to me, he
- 8:07Speaker 2: was like the Steph Curry of baseball. Yeah, He's like
- 8:09Speaker 2: he was that guy that would come out and like
- 8:12Speaker 2: I don't know if you've ever you've seen footage of him,
- 8:14Speaker 2: Like they'll line up five baseball bats at home plate
- 8:18Speaker 2: and he'll he'll like do a drill where he no look,
- 8:22Speaker 2: picks up the ball, turns and hits the bat from
- 8:24Speaker 2: like full sixty feet. Yeah, like five in a row.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And it's like, how many guys can do that? Like
- 8:29Speaker 2: he was doing Steph Curry trick shots, but in baseball, right.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And he still shows up at spring training this day
- 8:35Speaker 2: unannounced by himself and warms up with the team and
- 8:39Speaker 2: consistently throws like eighty five miles an hour.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It's incredible.
- 8:42Speaker 2: It's incredible. It takes batting practice, he's hitting home runs.
- 8:44Speaker 2: It's like that that guy one of a kind and
- 8:47Speaker 2: should have been you know he I I Marian Vera
- 8:50Speaker 2: is the greatest believer of all time. I think I
- 8:53Speaker 2: think each row is one of the like one of
- 8:55Speaker 2: the top three outfielders of all time, maybe just top
- 8:57Speaker 2: three all time period. It's it's ridiculous.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Absolutely. Look, you know we were talking again. You had
- 9:03Speaker 1: mentioned that we were texting with our bodies on our
- 9:06Speaker 1: text thread, and we're talking about CC Sabathia as well. Like,
- 9:09Speaker 1: I'm totally cool with Sabbathia getting in a nineteen year career,
- 9:15Speaker 1: six time All Star, finished in top five of cy
- 9:18Speaker 1: Young voting five times, where he won it in two
- 9:22Speaker 1: thousand and seven. He topped two hundred innings eight times
- 9:26Speaker 1: and won at least nineteen games, Yeah, nineteen games four times,
- 9:31Speaker 1: the ALCS MVP in two thousand and nine, also winning
- 9:35Speaker 1: a World Series ring of course, and in his career
- 9:37Speaker 1: he went two hundred and fifty one and one. He
- 9:40Speaker 1: was his record was two fifty one to one sixty
- 9:44Speaker 1: one with a three point seventy four ERA three thousand,
- 9:48Speaker 1: ninety three strikeouts in three thousand, five hundred seventy seven
- 9:52Speaker 1: and one thirds inning. I definitely think he should be
- 9:56Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame for sure. Yeah, and I
- 9:58Speaker 1: am close.
- 9:58Speaker 2: If you're in the yeah thirty five underwund and fifty club,
- 10:01Speaker 2: you know, strikeout twins, I think it's a done deal,
- 10:03Speaker 2: especially in modern baseball, to cross the threshold of tunder
- 10:07Speaker 2: and fifty wins with pitch counts and that kind of thing.
- 10:11Speaker 2: And he's one of those guys where as a Phillies fan,
- 10:15Speaker 2: I'll admit that my bias. When we kicked a shit
- 10:18Speaker 2: out of him in two thousand and eight when he
- 10:19Speaker 2: was with the Brewers, Yeah, I kind of forgot about
- 10:22Speaker 2: him for a little bit, you know, I kind of
- 10:23Speaker 2: forgot about his career. Yeah, he didn't kind of didn't
- 10:26Speaker 2: pay attention as much. And when he when his name
- 10:29Speaker 2: was on the ballot, and like last night I was
- 10:32Speaker 2: looking at the stats, I'm like, oh, yeah, he's easily in.
- 10:34Speaker 2: What the hell was I I missed? Like ten years
- 10:37Speaker 2: of his career was oh crab, this was awesome and
- 10:40Speaker 2: that not in. You know, there's always a story with
- 10:43Speaker 2: these guys too, Like he Dreuau came over at twenty seven,
- 10:46Speaker 2: was a rookie with the Mariners, Sabbatia battle alcohol addiction
- 10:50Speaker 2: and overcame that and still had an awesome career. And
- 10:54Speaker 2: those stories are like kind of kind of go on
- 10:57Speaker 2: go along with the like the just the story of
- 10:59Speaker 2: the player getting in. Typically, Yeah, Billy Wagner doesn't really
- 11:03Speaker 2: have a story. I'll be honest with you. I mean
- 11:05Speaker 2: kind of you know, he's he loves his wife from
- 11:08Speaker 2: what I understand that. The I saw the interview him
- 11:11Speaker 2: and I was kind of like, I don't really see
- 11:12Speaker 2: a story here, but you know, I'm sure here's a
- 11:13Speaker 2: poor kid in Texas into the whole thing. But yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 2: not a bad crop. Honestly, it was. It's better than
- 11:19Speaker 2: you know, like one guy makes it out of like
- 11:22Speaker 2: forty and you're just like, what are we doing? Yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 2: what's what's the point of this?
- 11:26Speaker 1: Exactly exactly. I think next year we're definitely gonna see
- 11:29Speaker 1: Carlos Beltron get in. Andrew Jones will definitely get in.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I mean, my Manny Ramiro might might have been Manny Ramirez,
- 11:36Speaker 1: Alex Rodriguez, Chase Utley. I mean, I definitely think it's
- 11:40Speaker 1: gonna be Beltron and Andrew Jones next year. For sure.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Depends on just you know, of course, who gets the votes.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But uh, you know, I mean Andy Pettitt, for God's sake,
- 11:50Speaker 1: is uh, you know, in the mix as well. So
- 11:53Speaker 1: I have to see how it goes next year. But
- 11:55Speaker 1: I again think it's gonna be Beltran Jones probably utly
- 11:58Speaker 1: next year.
- 12:00Speaker 2: We'll see. I mean, if there's a lot of New
- 12:02Speaker 2: York Riders, although he played for the Mets. Then a
- 12:05Speaker 2: lot of people hate Chase Sully. That is true in
- 12:08Speaker 2: the New York area. I do know that, but I think.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It's only a second year. It's only a second year.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, what percentage? But but he fits the narrative, the
- 12:17Speaker 2: rough and tumble, second basement hits for power, played the
- 12:21Speaker 2: game the right way, Yeah, exactly, he leans in to
- 12:24Speaker 2: get hit by the pitch. I love Chase Selly. I'm
- 12:26Speaker 2: just saying, like, but he does fit the narrative a
- 12:28Speaker 2: little bit. Winner.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Did you ask the percentage? Yeah?
- 12:32Speaker 2: What percentage he get this time?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Thirty nine point eight? Pretty high?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Okay, decent, it's pretty high actually first for yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 12:39Speaker 2: he deserves it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well, moving on to our next baseball
- 12:45Speaker 1: topic that we wanted to dive into. As I mentioned earlier,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you know, this past week the Redding Hot Stovers event,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I was talking to Sarge Gary Matthews Senior, and he
- 12:55Speaker 1: said something that I actually told him. I said, we're
- 12:57Speaker 1: going to talk about it more on the podcast in
- 12:59Speaker 1: the future because he's he said, no one in baseball
- 13:02Speaker 1: is really talking about this, and he said, baseball scouts
- 13:07Speaker 1: just do not get their due. Baseball scouts are so
- 13:10Speaker 1: important and critical to the game of baseball that they
- 13:13Speaker 1: just don't get credit for how important they are to
- 13:17Speaker 1: the game overall. And he said that there should be
- 13:19Speaker 1: scouts actually inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and
- 13:24Speaker 1: we wanted to talk about it here because look, at
- 13:27Speaker 1: the end of the day, you know, baseball players need
- 13:32Speaker 1: to be brought into a team based on some sort
- 13:35Speaker 1: of evaluation process. And who is doing that evaluation process.
- 13:39Speaker 1: It is the scouts. Yes, it is the front office
- 13:41Speaker 1: people who are hired. But really, I mean, we can
- 13:44Speaker 1: go back Eric to the first Major League Baseball draft
- 13:47Speaker 1: that was held in nineteen sixty five. Okay, and at
- 13:51Speaker 1: that point, yes, drafting was new, the advent of drafting
- 13:55Speaker 1: was new, but people started understanding that, you know what,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you got to interview the potential players that you want
- 14:01Speaker 1: to bring onto your team. You have to evaluate them,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you have to rank them as well. And the scouting
- 14:06Speaker 1: world is just an unspoken and unrecognized world in the
- 14:11Speaker 1: world of sports in general, but particularly baseball. The scouts,
- 14:16Speaker 1: as Sarge was saying, they just don't get their due.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And if it wasn't for scouts, you would not have
- 14:21Speaker 1: necessarily Ichiro Suzuki coming over here to the United States
- 14:26Speaker 1: in order to do what he did in Major League Baseball,
- 14:29Speaker 1: whether it's C. C. Sabathia, Chase Utley, even Alex Rodriguez.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Scouts had to find these guys in order to bring
- 14:36Speaker 1: them onto their teams initially in order for them to
- 14:38Speaker 1: achieve success. So I don't know, he said, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: Sarge said, Scouts, you know, they just tend to, you know,
- 14:47Speaker 1: fly away, or he said something like there like powder,
- 14:49Speaker 1: they just you know, you know, they just drift away.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Nobody really cares about them too much and should be
- 14:55Speaker 1: elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Look, there's exhibits
- 14:58Speaker 1: up in Cooperstown. There's an exhibit from my understanding with
- 15:03Speaker 1: the Scouts, but they're not inducted into the Hall of Fame.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I don't know, what do you what are your thoughts
- 15:07Speaker 1: about this? Eric?
- 15:09Speaker 2: I think it speaks to like just they just haven't
- 15:13Speaker 2: like they haven't done with the Hall of Fame that
- 15:16Speaker 2: they should have done yet, Like there's so much potential there. Yeah, sure,
- 15:21Speaker 2: it's the majesty of baseball and everyone loves when they
- 15:23Speaker 2: go there, But like they could be doing so much
- 15:25Speaker 2: more and just have different wings of the Hall of
- 15:28Speaker 2: Fame within the building. You should have your your GMS
- 15:32Speaker 2: and scouts wing, right, Yeah, and just real quick, we
- 15:35Speaker 2: go back to our first when we talk about that
- 15:37Speaker 2: single writer, that jerk off that didn't vote for each ierro.
- 15:40Speaker 2: The cool thing about GMS and the scout wing would
- 15:43Speaker 2: be it'd be players and like teams only, like you
- 15:47Speaker 2: wouldn't have any bullshit, you know, you would just know
- 15:50Speaker 2: if you walk through there, like, oh, these guys are
- 15:51Speaker 2: legit because this is voted on by the people. Actually
- 15:54Speaker 2: fucking know they like know their baseball right, and and
- 15:58Speaker 2: again like they should have their own wing because he's
- 16:00Speaker 2: absolutely right. I mean, there's there you look through all
- 16:03Speaker 2: kinds of sports, the U thirty for thirty, the Chicago Bears,
- 16:07Speaker 2: eighty five Bears. There was like a five minute section
- 16:10Speaker 2: of that where they talked about these two scouts that
- 16:12Speaker 2: like revolutionized scouting for the like the draft combine kind
- 16:17Speaker 2: of stuff. They would do the forty and they would
- 16:20Speaker 2: clock guys on like certain types of drills and they're
- 16:22Speaker 2: the first two to do it. They're the ones that
- 16:23Speaker 2: found Richard Dent Wally Galt, And it's like that it's
- 16:26Speaker 2: like your stories like that, You're like, oh, yeah, these
- 16:28Speaker 2: these people are a huge part of an organization eventually
- 16:32Speaker 2: hopefully wins a championship. So I agree with starts there
- 16:36Speaker 2: and then have your own wing of like assholes, your
- 16:38Speaker 2: Tay Cobs, you know, your Pete Roses, have your have
- 16:41Speaker 2: your cheating wing, right, you talk about a Rod and
- 16:44Speaker 2: Minny Ramirez, Barry Bonds are houston As throw those guys
- 16:49Speaker 2: in there. Okay, I'll go check that out then, and
- 16:50Speaker 2: then I'll go check the over one. I'll go to
- 16:52Speaker 2: the real one and bitch about the writers that don't
- 16:55Speaker 2: do the right thing right. So it's the potential there
- 17:00Speaker 2: for what that could be. But that you know, baseball
- 17:03Speaker 2: sold and so I think he used the term early Cragley. Yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 2: it's just never, never going to change. And I do
- 17:10Speaker 2: like the sentiment of him like trying to recognize the
- 17:12Speaker 2: guys that really do probably have a huge point part
- 17:15Speaker 2: and like bringing an organization to where they need to
- 17:17Speaker 2: be to at least be close to winning championship.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the interesting aspect in argument, or maybe
- 17:24Speaker 1: not even an argument, but another angle of this is
- 17:27Speaker 1: the fact that saber metrics have played such a huge
- 17:29Speaker 1: part in what teams do with players, not only what
- 17:33Speaker 1: they do with players, players that they're going to acquire
- 17:36Speaker 1: as well. So I guess, you know, the state of
- 17:40Speaker 1: scouting today could be considered a mixed bag. But there
- 17:43Speaker 1: are teams that are certainly prioritizing analytics. But there are
- 17:49Speaker 1: other organizations out there, you know, Toronto Blue Jays, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: we mentioned the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, even the Texas Rangers.
- 17:56Speaker 1: They've actually added scouts to their payrolls since twenty nineteen.
- 18:00Speaker 1: And look when the Rangers won the World Series in
- 18:02Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, baseball scouts around the league basically rejoiced.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I mean, the team's success confirmed that an emphasis on
- 18:11Speaker 1: personal touch and just the scouting process really did pay off.
- 18:16Speaker 1: So I guess there's that balance Again. We're talking about
- 18:19Speaker 1: cyber metrics, analytics and the scouting world where you see relationships,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you know, manifest between players and scouts and the entire organization.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think there's something to be said about that, you know,
- 18:33Speaker 1: the relationships that are made between scouts, whether it's prospects
- 18:36Speaker 1: of their families as well. I think it's a good
- 18:40Speaker 1: idea that, you know, more emphasis is placed on scouts
- 18:43Speaker 1: within the Hall of Fame because of what they've done
- 18:45Speaker 1: for the game.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I think most of I think most of sports are
- 18:48Speaker 2: is a copycat league, right, Yeah, A lleg goes so
- 18:52Speaker 2: far in one direction because of some kind of movement
- 18:55Speaker 2: or some team did something amazing. We all have to
- 18:58Speaker 2: do that now. Yeah, go in that direction for so
- 19:01Speaker 2: long and so hard that they'll lose what was working before,
- 19:05Speaker 2: right Ye. I mean take basketball. I mean you had
- 19:08Speaker 2: your mid two thousands where everything was defense. It was
- 19:10Speaker 2: eighty five to eighty six horrible games, but really good
- 19:13Speaker 2: games too, and you slowly drifted into the superstar eventually
- 19:17Speaker 2: into like the three and D, which is what we're
- 19:20Speaker 2: still in now. And we've gone too far in that direction.
- 19:23Speaker 2: We need to bring back some but you have some
- 19:25Speaker 2: teams like last year the Timberwolves brought defense back to
- 19:29Speaker 2: the forefront, almost made to the finals. So like in football,
- 19:32Speaker 2: you know, you pass happy all of a sudden defenses
- 19:35Speaker 2: were back. This year's baseball, you know, baseball analytics I
- 19:39Speaker 2: would say went too far. I respect the hell out
- 19:41Speaker 2: of it and saber metrics, but the story of the
- 19:44Speaker 2: Rangers having guys on the field personal touch like you said,
- 19:48Speaker 2: go and win a championship. They go out and buy
- 19:50Speaker 2: the right players for that organization and not just based
- 19:53Speaker 2: on saber metrics and it again, I think a healthy
- 19:58Speaker 2: mix to the two. The Phillies have decent, dude with that, Yeah,
- 20:03Speaker 2: because they're kind of old school. You know, they have
- 20:04Speaker 2: some old school people in the front office. So I
- 20:09Speaker 2: huge proponent of that. I think you have to have
- 20:11Speaker 2: a good mix of the two because you don't go
- 20:13Speaker 2: too far in one direction you wind up. You know,
- 20:15Speaker 2: with basketball games, teams are shooting ten for fifty six
- 20:19Speaker 2: from three point landings for the games.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, oh you talk about three and D with basketball.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You know who's not playing D Philadelphia seventy six or
- 20:28Speaker 1: those chumps.
- 20:30Speaker 2: That wasn't even a segue. I just am a basketball guy. Yeah, absolutely,
- 20:33Speaker 2: Holy hell, and let me the game last night. My god.
- 20:36Speaker 1: We'll get to it in just a bit. We are

- 21:24Speaker 1: just a bit. All right, We are back and segue
- 21:29Speaker 1: right before the break was the Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Injuries are everywhere. There is no consistency to this team.
- 21:37Speaker 1: There's no defense, no defense at all. Holy shit, it
- 21:42Speaker 1: is rough watching this, you know, Eric. Last night, you know,
- 21:45Speaker 1: my wife and I we got done watching a docu
- 21:47Speaker 1: series and I was like, I'm gonna I'm gonna put
- 21:50Speaker 1: the game on and see what's going on. I was like,
- 21:52Speaker 1: why am I wasting my time? We are at that
- 21:55Speaker 1: point in this NBA season. In this sixer season, we're
- 21:59Speaker 1: asking myself, why am I wasting my time? It's time
- 22:03Speaker 1: to throw in the towel at this point, right buddy.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I mean because at this point it's it's all about
- 22:10Speaker 1: Joel Embiid's knee, which is completely derailed this sixer season.
- 22:14Speaker 1: They got to throw in the towel. They need a
- 22:16Speaker 1: top draft pick coming into this particular draft and where
- 22:20Speaker 1: this organization is gonna go. I they got to throw
- 22:23Speaker 1: in the towel, right.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I mean you would think so, It's just the only
- 22:28Speaker 2: problem is like what do you what does that look like?
- 22:32Speaker 2: How do you do that? I mean, you you just
- 22:34Speaker 2: gave him be this humongous three year extension on top
- 22:36Speaker 2: of this year. I mean, you can throw in the
- 22:40Speaker 2: tel for this year, but you know, going into the future,
- 22:43Speaker 2: I'm not which I'm not even sure how that how
- 22:45Speaker 2: that works, because Paul George would just signed to a
- 22:47Speaker 2: major deal. Yep, Maxie. Obviously, you know he's kind of
- 22:49Speaker 2: the focal point of the whole team right now and
- 22:51Speaker 2: you have him locked up, which is smart. But if
- 22:55Speaker 2: if you're not.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Just thrown away the year, I mean, you just throw
- 22:57Speaker 1: away the year tank and then and base are like, Okay,
- 23:01Speaker 1: get these guys healthy for the twenty twenty five twenty
- 23:03Speaker 1: twenty sixth season.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I'm fine with that, and I would I would actually
- 23:07Speaker 2: keep Nick Nurse on staff to accomplish that, because he's
- 23:11Speaker 2: just not a good coach. I don't know what that
- 23:12Speaker 2: will happen to him. His players don't play for him,
- 23:15Speaker 2: they don't seem to respect him, his top players saying
- 23:18Speaker 2: he's bored on a fifteen and twenty seventeen that just
- 23:21Speaker 2: paid him two hundred and fifty million dollars. I mean,
- 23:25Speaker 2: what I do, like I text my brother, this is
- 23:27Speaker 2: a big Sixtress fan. What I do respect by the
- 23:30Speaker 2: on board statement is so old school mid two thousand basketball,
- 23:34Speaker 2: where I hate this coach. I want him the fuck
- 23:37Speaker 2: out of here kind of statements. I make all the money,
- 23:40Speaker 2: I'm going to say whatever I want. You don't see
- 23:42Speaker 2: that very much anymore these days. That was a straight
- 23:45Speaker 2: up like he's not even the start of the team, right,
- 23:47Speaker 2: but he pulled that crap. So a little bit of
- 23:49Speaker 2: respect to Paul George just in that regard.
- 23:51Speaker 1: But what could have happened though, Like, what could have
- 23:53Speaker 1: happened because Nick Nurse was fine he was a fine
- 23:56Speaker 1: coach for this team over the past couple of seasons. Here, like,
- 23:59Speaker 1: what the hell happened?
- 24:01Speaker 2: I mean, I they is it?
- 24:04Speaker 3: Is?
- 24:04Speaker 2: It?
- 24:04Speaker 1: Just like because like last night, okay, last night's lost
- 24:07Speaker 1: to the Nuggets. It was like a lazy, disinterested type
- 24:11Speaker 1: of loss. They were a team that just didn't want
- 24:14Speaker 1: to be out on the court, and of course the
- 24:16Speaker 1: head coach didn't get him in a good spot to
- 24:18Speaker 1: get them energized. How are you going to get energized
- 24:21Speaker 1: in this season though, where it is currently at? So
- 24:24Speaker 1: like I'm wondering if there was a moment, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe Marcus hazeill fucking give us a
- 24:30Speaker 1: you know, a great headline after after today's headline.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Jesus, anyway, maybe Marcus he'll give us a He'll give
- 24:37Speaker 2: us a one page with how many like two sentenced
- 24:41Speaker 2: paragraphs because he's being dramatic.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I love that.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Yeah, fucking jer he really sucks.
- 24:47Speaker 1: No really, but there has to be something going on.
- 24:50Speaker 1: But like when you don't have your star players and
- 24:54Speaker 1: you don't have what you were intending to do during
- 24:57Speaker 1: the off season, when it hasn't manifested this year, Like,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but what the hell's the coach supposed to do here
- 25:02Speaker 1: at this point.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's okay.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I don't mean to defend him because he's not doing
- 25:07Speaker 1: well at this point, but.
- 25:08Speaker 2: He's in a bad spot, but it is. There's no
- 25:10Speaker 2: excuse for being fifteen to twenty seven with his team.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And like you knew, the hard part of the season
- 25:18Speaker 2: was coming up, and you had to get these guys
- 25:21Speaker 2: rallied and ready to go to hopefully and be comes back.
- 25:24Speaker 2: And you hit mid January and you play, you play
- 25:27Speaker 2: at least five hundred ball against the hard part of
- 25:29Speaker 2: the schedule because you had kind of a cupcake schedule
- 25:32Speaker 2: to begin with. Didn't do that. Man, they don't respond
- 25:35Speaker 2: to him. And I don't think it's all just him.
- 25:37Speaker 2: I just you know, some coaches just wearing their teams.
- 25:40Speaker 2: This one happened pretty fast. But the central cancer of
- 25:45Speaker 2: this team has been for a while. And we were
- 25:48Speaker 2: all fans. We're all happy when he's doing well and
- 25:51Speaker 2: the team's winning. The whole franchise just is in Embad's
- 25:55Speaker 2: hands and it has been for a long long time. Yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 2: And the front office, Darryl Moore included Josh Harris is
- 26:00Speaker 2: an absent owner. He doesn't even count in this, but
- 26:04Speaker 2: just they they've made it very clear that he's the man.
- 26:07Speaker 2: It's his entire team, it's his franchise, and he's not playing,
- 26:12Speaker 2: we're not going to do well. We're gonna try, but
- 26:15Speaker 2: but if if Embiad's pouting, he's not playing, well, you
- 26:19Speaker 2: see the results. Like the record reflects his effort and
- 26:23Speaker 2: what he's looked like even when he played this year.
- 26:25Speaker 2: The last game he played, I think it was against
- 26:26Speaker 2: the Grizzlies, I can't remember, but they were running this
- 26:30Speaker 2: super fast motion offense. They had shooters running all over
- 26:32Speaker 2: the place. He looked like he was on ice skates.
- 26:35Speaker 2: He looked like he was lost. He was falling. He
- 26:38Speaker 2: was having one of the he had one of those
- 26:39Speaker 2: embiid falling over games where he falls over like six times.
- 26:42Speaker 2: And you know, like I coached sixth grade boys and
- 26:46Speaker 2: they don't fall that much, and they're goofy and like
- 26:48Speaker 2: they don't know what they're doing.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Fries out of their pockets.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I told Jeff before they for the show that I
- 26:56Speaker 2: have a kid that likes to bring French fries in
- 26:57Speaker 2: his pocket to practice sometimes. But he does, but he's smart.
- 27:00Speaker 2: He's actually very smart with it. He puts him in,
- 27:03Speaker 2: he keeps him in the container, the hard cardboard container,
- 27:07Speaker 2: so it slides right in his pocket. So I actually
- 27:10Speaker 2: love to see that on the Sixer at this point,
- 27:11Speaker 2: at least give me an excuse as to why you're down,
- 27:15Speaker 2: Why you're twelve games under five hundred and eighth worst
- 27:18Speaker 2: record in the league. Yeah, yeah, And I always.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I love this kid. I got to go into a
- 27:22Speaker 1: staff meeting at work with French fries in my pocket.
- 27:26Speaker 2: He is something else. He's the kid that says stuff
- 27:29Speaker 2: and you want to get mad and you're like, that's
- 27:30Speaker 2: kind of funny.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Anyway, I'm sorry to interrupt with.
- 27:34Speaker 2: The I've said it three times on the show. With
- 27:38Speaker 2: the past couple of weeks, the Sixers have a top
- 27:40Speaker 2: seven protective first round pick this year. They're the eighth
- 27:43Speaker 2: worst team in the league as of right now, they
- 27:45Speaker 2: would lose it to Oklahoma City, who's by far the
- 27:47Speaker 2: best team in the league. It's just what a kick
- 27:49Speaker 2: in the nuts that would be. Yep, and it's in
- 27:52Speaker 2: the stats. You know, the fourth worst offense in basketball,
- 27:57Speaker 2: right in the middle of the pack. Defensively, they don't
- 27:59Speaker 2: play with any speed, they don't really know who they are.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Like there'll be a half court team half a game,
- 28:04Speaker 2: and then they'll try and be a fast paced team.
- 28:07Speaker 2: They can't do either. So you either wanted them to
- 28:12Speaker 2: crash and burn this year. And some people are like, oh,
- 28:15Speaker 2: this is a crash and burn. None of this is
- 28:16Speaker 2: like it's not not bad enough, right, Like they at
- 28:18Speaker 2: least need to be in the mix it's seven to eight,
- 28:21Speaker 2: or we needed to win like ten games and be
- 28:24Speaker 2: like the third worst team in the league. We're in
- 28:26Speaker 2: a really bad spot right now.
- 28:27Speaker 1: They've lost seven in a row. As of us recording this,
- 28:31Speaker 1: I think I'm basically hearing it from you and it's
- 28:34Speaker 1: what I'm thinking too. And I hate I hate the
- 28:36Speaker 1: whole I hate thet they got to tank the rest
- 28:39Speaker 1: of the season. But like it's like, and I hate
- 28:41Speaker 1: using the phrase tank, but it's it's like, we're at
- 28:43Speaker 1: a point here where what is it going to do
- 28:47Speaker 1: for this team if they actually start winning some games,
- 28:50Speaker 1: which I do think they can do with the talent
- 28:52Speaker 1: on the team, But what is it going to do
- 28:54Speaker 1: from the overall standpoint looking down the road? So, yes,
- 28:59Speaker 1: losing games, not possibly putting your best players on the
- 29:03Speaker 1: court all the time if they're healthy. Uh, it may
- 29:06Speaker 1: not be the solution here for where this team needs
- 29:09Speaker 1: to go. Twenty twenty four twenty twenty five season has
- 29:13Speaker 1: been crap. It has been dog shit and it's not
- 29:17Speaker 1: gonna get any I just don't see it getting any better.
- 29:19Speaker 1: I do not see indeed, if he is able to
- 29:21Speaker 1: come back saying, you know what, we're gonna kick some ass. Now, guys,
- 29:24Speaker 1: you know what, this knee is gonna be perfectly healthy.
- 29:27Speaker 1: It's not gonna happen. So let him out the rest
- 29:31Speaker 1: of the season. I don't care Paul George, he doesn't
- 29:33Speaker 1: need to he doesn't need to play either. Get these
- 29:35Speaker 1: guys healthy. So the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season,
- 29:39Speaker 1: maybe we can see some success with them and just let.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Maxi Ball, you know, become the off on the team. Yeah,
- 29:45Speaker 2: I mean yeah for for a year. See what he's got. Yeah,
- 29:48Speaker 2: and and and just and just sink against the Pelicans.
- 29:52Speaker 2: The Pelicans are right there with us in the records.
- 29:56Speaker 2: They're gonna trade Zion, They're gonna be even worse. Yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 2: Portland Brooklyn Trial, it always seems are terrible, Like we
- 30:04Speaker 2: like we're we're but we're not terrible enough and like
- 30:07Speaker 2: that there's only one solution that is a solution. But
- 30:10Speaker 2: I think Darryl Morio's pride Nick Nurse is gonna be
- 30:13Speaker 2: fighting for a job. Yep, you know. Paul George, even
- 30:15Speaker 2: though he seems kind of aloof, I think I think
- 30:18Speaker 2: I said, he's always been kind of a beta. If
- 30:21Speaker 2: there's an Alfa on the team, he kind of falls
- 30:23Speaker 2: in the line and plays hard. Yeah, if Embe can
- 30:25Speaker 2: come back and do that, But I don't, I don't,
- 30:27Speaker 2: I just I'll say it on the show. Right now,
- 30:30Speaker 2: I think in Beat's done.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Like it's like done, like done, completely done over.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I think he's done being in bed from like two
- 30:36Speaker 2: years ago when he was averaging thirty points and like
- 30:38Speaker 2: twelve rebounds, you know, and is he as good as
- 30:41Speaker 2: Yokici never was? But I mean there was at least
- 30:43Speaker 2: a conversation. I think those days are cooked. I think
- 30:46Speaker 2: we're looking at like fifty games a year, twenty two
- 30:49Speaker 2: points a game, eight rebounds, and that's just and he's
- 30:51Speaker 2: he's a great mid range shooter. I think that's the
- 30:54Speaker 2: NB we're looking at right now.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Gosh, that makes me want to cry, just like you
- 30:57Speaker 1: said that it makes you cry.
- 30:59Speaker 2: The extension makes me I think, yeah, makes him untradeable, yep,
- 31:03Speaker 2: completely trade Yeah.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Yeah. All right, Well, we'd love to hear from you
- 31:08Speaker 1: about this Sixers team and what you think they should
- 31:10Speaker 1: do the rest of this season. Philadelphia Sports Table at
- 31:12Speaker 1: gmail dot com. Shoot us off an email. We'd love
- 31:15Speaker 1: to get into it here on the show. And uh
- 31:18Speaker 1: now we got to get into some Philadelphia Eagles talk
- 31:21Speaker 1: as this team is heading to the NFC Championship Game
- 31:26Speaker 1: overall perspective, and I know we're gonna get into this
- 31:28Speaker 1: with our guests coming up as well. We were saying
- 31:32Speaker 1: that in order for this Eagles season to be deemed successful, Eric,
- 31:36Speaker 1: you know, they they're gonna have to reach the NFC
- 31:38Speaker 1: Championship Game. They're gonna have to reach this level for
- 31:42Speaker 1: us to say, you know what, yes, this is a
- 31:44Speaker 1: successful season. They're there, well, I mean, they're part of me.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Cannot believe that this season actually has turned out the
- 31:53Speaker 1: way that it has, and especially here during the playoffs
- 31:55Speaker 1: with Jalen Hurts not necessarily playing his best in terms
- 31:58Speaker 1: of the passing game. Thank God for Saquon Barkley. That's
- 32:02Speaker 1: all I could say. Thank God for Saquon Barkley. But look,
- 32:06Speaker 1: we see what a complete team they have been in
- 32:09Speaker 1: so many different ways. And you know what, Jalen Hurts.
- 32:11Speaker 1: He's not an elite quarterback, but he's not a piece
- 32:13Speaker 1: of garbage quarterback either. I'm really getting a little tired
- 32:16Speaker 1: of the narrative quite frankly, of this guy stinks you
- 32:19Speaker 1: shouldn't even be on the team, Josh Allen. Last week
- 32:22Speaker 1: he had very similar stats passing stats, I should say
- 32:26Speaker 1: to Jalen Hurts, and he's not getting the type of
- 32:29Speaker 1: you know, crap thrown his way. But I think this success,
- 32:34Speaker 1: I think this team has been a success. We can
- 32:36Speaker 1: deem this year to be a success for the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I don't think it's like Super Bowl or bust, because
- 32:43Speaker 1: I don't think they would have got I don't. I
- 32:45Speaker 1: think a lot of folks didn't think they were gonna
- 32:47Speaker 1: win all those games in a row. So I don't
- 32:50Speaker 1: know what are your thoughts here overall success.
- 32:52Speaker 3: No.
- 32:53Speaker 2: At one point in the season, I mean we were saying, like, man,
- 32:56Speaker 2: I think they should fire Siriani. Man like five weeks in.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I think they're right. He's yelling at the fans, he's
- 33:02Speaker 2: using his kids as a shield after games, and it was like,
- 33:05Speaker 2: this is not this is going south. Holy hell, he's
- 33:08Speaker 2: grown up.
- 33:09Speaker 1: He has grown up a lot.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And I was listening is fun. I was listening
- 33:13Speaker 2: to the Mark Maron podcast today he did with Bill
- 33:17Speaker 2: burd the other day. Bill Bill Burr said he's a
- 33:20Speaker 2: huge fan of Nick Sirianni, and Mark Marin didn't know
- 33:23Speaker 2: wo he was, but he described him as a coach
- 33:25Speaker 2: for the football for Eagles, and he was like, I
- 33:27Speaker 2: like him because I can tell he's he's kind of
- 33:30Speaker 2: like me, and that he flies off the handle. He's
- 33:33Speaker 2: doing his best, he's trying to figure out who he is,
- 33:36Speaker 2: but he's you know, he's fighting answers those intelligence sometimes. Yeah,
- 33:39Speaker 2: but he's just he's he's a normal guy. And I
- 33:41Speaker 2: was like, it's actually a pretty good description of the
- 33:43Speaker 2: guy because he did make some mistakes over this year
- 33:47Speaker 2: and he probably get taken a side by somebody, and
- 33:49Speaker 2: he kind of worked on it. He seems like a
- 33:50Speaker 2: much normal, level headed dude now and it's like, Okay,
- 33:54Speaker 2: that's kind of cool, Like good, good, good growth. Jalen
- 33:57Speaker 2: Hurts doesn't seem to have grown at all as a
- 33:59Speaker 2: player this year.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Year.
- 34:00Speaker 2: But I'm not putting him down, just saying he's steady
- 34:03Speaker 2: and he didn't make he didn't make any mistakes last
- 34:06Speaker 2: week that got it that like lost this the game.
- 34:09Speaker 1: He hasn't been turned the ball over at all.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a better game He's better than the game manager.
- 34:13Speaker 2: I'm not going to call him that, Yea, but he's
- 34:15Speaker 2: I mean, let's face it, of the four quarterbacks left
- 34:19Speaker 2: in the playoffs, he's the he's the worst one out
- 34:21Speaker 2: of the four. Yeah, I think it's safe to say that, right, Yeah,
- 34:25Speaker 2: but he's not.
- 34:26Speaker 3: He's not that far off.
- 34:27Speaker 2: I mean, Jane Daniels, this is the first game, Jane Daniels,
- 34:29Speaker 2: this is prime time, freezing cold, could be awful. Whether
- 34:34Speaker 2: the fans are going to be awful to him, they
- 34:36Speaker 2: are going to be just so bad. So, I mean,
- 34:39Speaker 2: this would be a true test for him. Like, I
- 34:41Speaker 2: don't think he's going to come out in a Dome
- 34:44Speaker 2: or Tampa where it's warm and the fans are I mean,
- 34:47Speaker 2: Detroit fans were great, the Tampa fans, I'm sure he
- 34:49Speaker 2: didn't even get bothered by them. But this is gonna
- 34:51Speaker 2: be a different environment for him. And I was just
- 34:54Speaker 2: pointing him out because I was just like, he's kind
- 34:57Speaker 2: of the key to the whole game, I would say,
- 34:59Speaker 2: But getting back and Eagle success this year, Yeah, it's
- 35:02Speaker 2: a huge success. I mean there were certain points of
- 35:04Speaker 2: this season where everybody was like, well, who's gonna win
- 35:07Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. It's going to be either the Packers,
- 35:09Speaker 2: Vikings or Lions. That's it. Theo's the only teams involved here. Yeah,
- 35:13Speaker 2: and neither of those teams are in in fact, you
- 35:15Speaker 2: know the uh I mean, hell, I kind of surprise.
- 35:19Speaker 2: I'll be honest with me. I can't believe neither of
- 35:21Speaker 2: those three teams. Maybe the seats incredible, I know, But
- 35:24Speaker 2: thank god because we got a home game, which I
- 35:27Speaker 2: would that if you would have told me at the
- 35:28Speaker 2: beginning of the year.
- 35:29Speaker 1: We got a home game in the NFC Championship. No
- 35:32Speaker 1: freaking way, no, exactly exactly. It's a successful season, folks,
- 35:36Speaker 1: regardless of what happens this Sunday, it's a successful season
- 35:40Speaker 1: in my opinion. But I have to say when we
- 35:43Speaker 1: are talking about where the where the real major success
- 35:46Speaker 1: was Vic Fangio of course, and what he did turning
- 35:50Speaker 1: around this defense from last year, and also Jeff Stoutlin
- 35:55Speaker 1: taking the offensive line to I even think another level
- 35:58Speaker 1: to be able to allow safe one Barkley to do
- 36:01Speaker 1: what he did this season with his two thousand and
- 36:04Speaker 1: five yards on the ground. It just Jeff Staltlin is
- 36:08Speaker 1: incredible with his He's the run game coach coordinator, whatever
- 36:12Speaker 1: you want to call him, He's incredible. He is incredible.
- 36:15Speaker 1: We always talk about how well he does with the
- 36:17Speaker 1: offensive line, but what he's done with the actual run
- 36:19Speaker 1: game as well. It's Vic Fangio and Uh and Uh
- 36:24Speaker 1: and Jeff Staltlin and just the offensive line in Saquon two.
- 36:28Speaker 1: It's that's the success of this year.
- 36:31Speaker 2: By by far. It's not n close like that. And
- 36:33Speaker 2: that's to call Jalen man. Jalen hurts him managing quarterback.
- 36:38Speaker 2: He kind of he kind of can be when the
- 36:40Speaker 2: defense is that good and the running game is that strong.
- 36:43Speaker 2: I mean, Barkley saved the entire year. Yes, Like there's
- 36:47Speaker 2: we don't we don't He's that, I know, And you
- 36:52Speaker 2: know the whole the m VP thing is, you know
- 36:54Speaker 2: pretty much Josh Allen and and Lamar Jackson. It's like
- 36:59Speaker 2: and in the bark anything kind of went away, and
- 37:01Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm watching the game Sunday. I'm like, he
- 37:04Speaker 2: should be. He still still should be. Should Yes, Yeah,
- 37:08Speaker 2: he saved this entire year for them. And I talked
- 37:11Speaker 2: earlier about like it was a pass happy league for
- 37:14Speaker 2: at one point, and the Eagles come in and just
- 37:18Speaker 2: run grade over defenses. Their their offensive line is just
- 37:21Speaker 2: just bullying teams. You know, the rams up defensive line
- 37:25Speaker 2: came in like kind of on fire. They made mincemeat
- 37:28Speaker 2: of the Vikings offensive line and killed you know, basically
- 37:31Speaker 2: ended Sam Donald's career.
- 37:32Speaker 1: He'll he'll get signing it, but like he not this
- 37:34Speaker 1: dealer was going to get before in that game.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh and they they, I mean they gave
- 37:39Speaker 2: a couple of sacks, but then they kicked their asses,
- 37:41Speaker 2: just absolutely kicked their asses. And that's that's what I
- 37:44Speaker 2: mean that that that's the that's the biggest reason why
- 37:46Speaker 2: they should beat Washington this week. Washington's defense is just
- 37:50Speaker 2: there's no way they should compete with us defensively.
- 37:52Speaker 1: No, you're absolutely correct. You're absolutely correct. All right, buddy,
- 37:56Speaker 1: Why don't I let you head out here and then
- 37:58Speaker 1: we're going to get to this week's interview. We're gonna
- 38:00Speaker 1: be talking more birds and getting into what we're gonna
- 38:04Speaker 1: be seeing from this team this coming Sunday against the
- 38:07Speaker 1: Washington Commanders. Any final thoughts for you, buddy, before I
- 38:10Speaker 1: let you go.
- 38:11Speaker 2: I will say this for karmic reasons. Jayde Daniels scares
- 38:14Speaker 2: the shit out of me. I'm just gonna say it. Man,
- 38:18Speaker 2: If he makes If, if Jalen Carter has him like
- 38:22Speaker 2: all wrapped up and he jumps out and there's a
- 38:24Speaker 2: sixty yard bomb, I'm gonna be like, oh my god,
- 38:26Speaker 2: I can't believe they're gonna lose.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 38:30Speaker 2: I get this team like he is. He is fighting,
- 38:33Speaker 2: he's he's frightening.
- 38:34Speaker 1: He's for real, and you know what, he's smart too.
- 38:37Speaker 1: He's not just like, oh, I'm getting rushed out of
- 38:40Speaker 1: the pocket. I gotta, I gotta, I gotta do this,
- 38:42Speaker 1: I gotta. He's calculating and he knows the yardage that
- 38:45Speaker 1: he needs to get the first down. How many third
- 38:47Speaker 1: and fourth downs did Jaydeen Daniels get his offense? My gosh,
- 38:51Speaker 1: it's amazing over these past few weeks here, it's it's
- 38:54Speaker 1: it's scary.
- 38:55Speaker 2: And he's gonna be around for a while, I know,
- 38:57Speaker 2: and we're gonna play him twice a year. It's horrendous.
- 39:00Speaker 2: And I'm looking right now at their season leater stats.
- 39:03Speaker 2: He was the top passer and rusher this year.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 39:09Speaker 2: That's like it's Cunningham stuff. Yeah, I mean like that
- 39:11Speaker 2: has happened in a long time.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Yep. All right, buddy, I'll let you go. Folks. We
- 39:15Speaker 1: are going to take a break, and when we get back,
- 39:17Speaker 1: we got more Eagles talk. Got a brand new guest
- 39:20Speaker 1: gonna be joining us. Stick with us. All right, we
- 39:24Speaker 1: are back. Let's get into some more Birds talk here.
- 39:26Speaker 1: NFC Championship game right around the corner. That's what we're
- 39:29Speaker 1: throwing down on the table and now on the table
- 39:36Speaker 1: joining us this week for the very first time here
- 39:38Speaker 1: at the PST podcast show. You can find him on
- 39:41Speaker 1: the Twitter slash x at Daily Birds. Three to two,
- 39:46Speaker 1: We've got Tommy better known as Dose Man. We've got
- 39:51Speaker 1: Tommy from Daily Dose. Tommy, Buddy, how you doing man?
- 39:55Speaker 1: I am doing very very well. The anticipation of what
- 39:58Speaker 1: this NFC Championship game is is it's like way too
- 40:02Speaker 1: much for me at this point, Like I'm just I'm
- 40:04Speaker 1: consumed by it. I cannot believe we are here at
- 40:07Speaker 1: this point. Quite frankly, it's been a tremendous season for
- 40:11Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles, and so many of us have said
- 40:15Speaker 1: over the course of this year, if this team doesn't
- 40:17Speaker 1: head to the NFC Championship Game, it would be a
- 40:20Speaker 1: failed season. And my co host and myself were just
- 40:24Speaker 1: talking about this. Wanted to get your thoughts on this
- 40:26Speaker 1: as well. When you look at this Eagle season and
- 40:30Speaker 1: this team overall, do you believe it has been a
- 40:33Speaker 1: successful season regardless of what happens from here on out,
- 40:36Speaker 1: what are your thoughts?
- 40:37Speaker 3: I mean, you starting off, you know, let's let's start
- 40:40Speaker 3: week one pre season. Before you know, you add Saquon
- 40:44Speaker 3: at first a deal. I thought it was a great deal.
- 40:46Speaker 3: You gotta add, and you add Bryce Huff, you bring
- 40:48Speaker 3: CJ back, you know, so you take a look at
- 40:51Speaker 3: the roster. It's a super Bowl caliber roster. It's a
- 40:54Speaker 3: super Bowl caliber roster, do it too? Going into the
- 40:57Speaker 3: buy concerned obviously, and then from there, I mean, Jalen
- 41:03Speaker 3: after the bye, I'd like to say, close to some
- 41:07Speaker 3: of the best football he's played since twenty twenty two.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Taekwon two thousand yards MVP finalists, currently Offensive Player of
- 41:14Speaker 3: the Year finalist. As expectations go, this is a super
- 41:18Speaker 3: Bowl roster. If you take a look from head to toe,
- 41:21Speaker 3: this is a super Bowl roster compared to you know,
- 41:25Speaker 3: last year's roster. The defense totally revamped, the young corners,
- 41:29Speaker 3: you know, quinnyon dejeene bo stepping up and playing good football.
- 41:34Speaker 3: The d line found its identity again. I mean this
- 41:37Speaker 3: is this is a Super Bowl roster head to toe,
- 41:41Speaker 3: head to toe. You take a look even at other
- 41:45Speaker 3: rosters now Ravens, Bills, you know, even Commanders Chiefs, they're
- 41:52Speaker 3: complete rosters. But there are areas of weakness this team
- 41:57Speaker 3: from head to toe. There's no real yes, we need
- 42:01Speaker 3: to attack this spot. This is their weakness and they
- 42:03Speaker 3: are top five in all categories in our opinion.
- 42:05Speaker 1: So do you believe that, like that it was going
- 42:08Speaker 1: to be NFC championship or bust when the initial you know,
- 42:12Speaker 1: when that first before that first snap of the season
- 42:15Speaker 1: started in the regular season, that very first game, was
- 42:18Speaker 1: that your thoughts, because that's what a lot of people
- 42:19Speaker 1: were saying reflecting what you just said, that this is
- 42:22Speaker 1: a complete team in so many different ways. Did you
- 42:26Speaker 1: believe that, you know what, they don't get to the
- 42:28Speaker 1: NFC Championship game, it's gonna be a failed season.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Yeah, look good at the Rossar, I saw this as
- 42:33Speaker 3: this is our best chance since twenty twenty two, and
- 42:36Speaker 3: it really is. And now to me it's look, you
- 42:40Speaker 3: got to where you want to be, the NFC Championship.
- 42:42Speaker 3: You know, your one game away. If in that case
- 42:44Speaker 3: they fall short, I think it would be more prope
- 42:48Speaker 3: to say it was disappointing rather than a non successful season,
- 42:52Speaker 3: because tons saquon the mergers of Bond, it would just
- 42:55Speaker 3: be more disappointing, like, man, we have all these pieces,
- 42:58Speaker 3: we have this, then you go dig deep, what is
- 43:01Speaker 3: the cause? What is not getting us there? And then
- 43:04Speaker 3: that's where I think there could be some real, you know,
- 43:07Speaker 3: strange off season conversations.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely. You mentioned Zach Bond and his emergence, not
- 43:15Speaker 1: just in terms of this Eagles team, but with regard
- 43:17Speaker 1: to the entire NFL. I mean, this Eagles defense is
- 43:21Speaker 1: one of the best that we have ever seen, definitely
- 43:24Speaker 1: like top two. I think for sure we were talking
- 43:27Speaker 1: about it on the show last week. I mean, Tommy
- 43:30Speaker 1: I was concerned at the beginning of the season about
- 43:33Speaker 1: the d line quite frankly, them having the ability to
- 43:36Speaker 1: truly rush the passer and also clog those gaps in
- 43:39Speaker 1: the run game. I mean, they have been effective just
- 43:42Speaker 1: about all season, even after having lost Hassan Reddick and everybody,
- 43:46Speaker 1: you know, you hear the name Hassan Reddick and it's like,
- 43:47Speaker 1: who oh, yeah, that's right. He did have a great season.
- 43:50Speaker 1: But you know what, we didn't necessarily need him here.
- 43:53Speaker 1: So I guess my next question would be, you know,
- 43:56Speaker 1: in what ways have you seen this Eagles defensive line
- 44:00Speaker 1: grow this season in terms of like what the expectations
- 44:03Speaker 1: were initially right out of the gate.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Yeah, so like like growing up in the Eagles fin when
- 44:09Speaker 3: it came to you know, the Eagles defense. I mean
- 44:11Speaker 3: they have some of the best defensive line history. Yeah,
- 44:15Speaker 3: I mean dating back years ago. We got Trent Cole.
- 44:19Speaker 3: I'm just going back for my lifetime. I'm a younger,
- 44:21Speaker 3: you know, so I've I've seen Trent Cole.
- 44:23Speaker 1: I'm an old I'm an old man.
- 44:25Speaker 3: I know I've seen you know, a Fletcher Cox, Connor Barwin.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I've seen these guys. So then you know, you bring
- 44:33Speaker 3: this new blood in. You got Jalen Carter, you got
- 44:35Speaker 3: Jordan Davis, You've got Nolan Smith Josh Sweat. To me,
- 44:42Speaker 3: the two biggest the proper word be the two biggest
- 44:48Speaker 3: I think surprises were Nolan Smith and Milton Williams. Yeah,
- 44:51Speaker 3: I mean we're going back to last year twenty twenty three.
- 44:54Speaker 3: You know, Noan Nolan Smith had eighteen tackles in one
- 44:57Speaker 3: sack and he played sixteen games this year forty two tackles,
- 45:01Speaker 3: six and a half sacks. He's had three sacks, three
- 45:04Speaker 3: tackles for a loss on a forest fumble in this
- 45:05Speaker 3: year's playoffs alone. I mean, with Brandy Graham going down,
- 45:10Speaker 3: you got Nolan Smith stepping up. It just makes you wonder, Okay,
- 45:15Speaker 3: is this Dan line now rolling over now to the
- 45:17Speaker 3: younger guys Jordan Davis for me, rather disappointing. You know,
- 45:24Speaker 3: I understand where the lack of production was. You know
- 45:28Speaker 3: at he's what six eight, three hundred and fifty plus pounds,
- 45:32Speaker 3: you know, yeah, some you know Milton Williams stepping up this.
- 45:37Speaker 3: You know last year forty two tackles for half a sack.
- 45:40Speaker 3: This year, you know, twenty four tackles, five sacks. It's
- 45:42Speaker 3: just there are guys stepping up on the D line
- 45:45Speaker 3: when they need to and I think, in my opinion,
- 45:47Speaker 3: all comes down Jalen Carter. I think he's taking command
- 45:50Speaker 3: of that line and going, look, just follow me, Just
- 45:54Speaker 3: follow me. The rest will show he's pulling double teams.
- 45:57Speaker 3: That's obviously gonna leave somebody uncovered. That's where you see
- 46:01Speaker 3: no one off the edge. That's where you see sweat
- 46:03Speaker 3: off the edge. As regards to the entire line, I
- 46:07Speaker 3: just think I think it's the youth movement now. I
- 46:10Speaker 3: think it's keeping consistent with the guys you have, obviously,
- 46:15Speaker 3: keeping the rotations set. Bryce Huff he was disappointing this year.
- 46:19Speaker 3: I think he was used in I don't think he
- 46:22Speaker 3: was used the right way. We look at what he
- 46:23Speaker 3: did with the Jets. A lot of those sacks last
- 46:26Speaker 3: year were on third downs. A lot of them were
- 46:29Speaker 3: big time third down plays. I think he got into
- 46:32Speaker 3: tempo of Okay, I'm taking a few plays off, hopping
- 46:34Speaker 3: it on third down, taking a few plays off hopping
- 46:36Speaker 3: on third down. He comes to Philly, we're paying him
- 46:39Speaker 3: starting edge money, so they're gonna play him starting edge.
- 46:42Speaker 3: I think this year's success just just comes from the
- 46:48Speaker 3: younger guys. Brandon Graham moving forward thirty, you know, he's
- 46:53Speaker 3: getting to those mid thirties where Nolan Smith is having
- 46:56Speaker 3: a great back half of the years. It wouldn't be
- 47:00Speaker 3: surprising to me to see Nolan Smith next year be
- 47:03Speaker 3: that guy on the edge that Brandon Graham was.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's amazing how Brandon Graham goes down and a
- 47:09Speaker 1: lot of us were like, oh my gosh, what is
- 47:11Speaker 1: going to happen now with this defensive line, not just
- 47:14Speaker 1: from a veteran standpoint, but just from a productivity standpoint,
- 47:17Speaker 1: And Nolan Smith he hasn't missed a beat at all.
- 47:21Speaker 1: I think you're absolutely correct, Tom and what you're saying
- 47:23Speaker 1: with regard to this defensive line, the growth. They are young,
- 47:28Speaker 1: but they're going to continue to to develop well into
- 47:31Speaker 1: the future. And as we're moving along with a conversation,
- 47:34Speaker 1: I mean, we've been saying all along this season that
- 47:39Speaker 1: this Eagles team, you know we were talking about earlier,
- 47:42Speaker 1: that they are such a complete team. There can be
- 47:45Speaker 1: a complete team, but not perfect. They are not perfect
- 47:49Speaker 1: by any stretch. There's no NFL team that is actually
- 47:51Speaker 1: perfect out there. And I will, of course even say
- 47:53Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs certainly not a perfect team. But as
- 47:56Speaker 1: we're in the thick of the playoffs. I'm wondering, like,
- 47:59Speaker 1: what's the biggest red flag that you have seen from
- 48:03Speaker 1: the defense this past week, whether it's against the Rams,
- 48:05Speaker 1: whether it's during this playoff run here, and what are
- 48:10Speaker 1: some things that you think the defense really needs to
- 48:12Speaker 1: clean up against the Commanders this weekend and even should
- 48:15Speaker 1: they head to the Super Bowl. What are your thoughts here?
- 48:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you know, after the Rams game, I
- 48:22Speaker 3: was up all night, couldn't fall asleep. I mean it
- 48:24Speaker 3: was just between the Snow game, you know, the big win.
- 48:27Speaker 3: It was just I couldn't fall asleep. I was a static.
- 48:30Speaker 2: I was great.
- 48:31Speaker 3: I end up going back watching the highlights and just
- 48:33Speaker 3: just kind of re just kind of man looking at
- 48:37Speaker 3: it from a point where I know we got the win. Now,
- 48:40Speaker 3: let's go back and look at maybe some things I
- 48:42Speaker 3: missed due to excitement or whatever. Yeah, the first thing
- 48:44Speaker 3: that stuck out to me was just n Kolbe. Dean's
- 48:47Speaker 3: presence is definitely missed over the middle. I mean, you
- 48:50Speaker 3: look at that first drive they did. I mean they
- 48:52Speaker 3: hit Higbee three times down the middle, and Burks is
- 48:55Speaker 3: just I get it, because you know, Dean's been that guy.
- 48:58Speaker 3: He's the play call. He's been that, so his presence definitely,
- 49:01Speaker 3: they got beat a lot over the middle of that game.
- 49:05Speaker 3: I mean, you look at some of the third downs
- 49:06Speaker 3: to third and eight over the middle, just even if
- 49:09Speaker 3: it's right to Nikula or the tight end. Yeah, that's
- 49:12Speaker 3: that's that's big. And you look at Washington when they
- 49:15Speaker 3: played Detroit. Zach Ertz is thirty four years old and
- 49:18Speaker 3: he's still getting great productivity over there. He's he's doing real.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Well and he's still getting separation at his age, which
- 49:24Speaker 1: is ag Yeah, and for a team that you know,
- 49:29Speaker 1: aside from Terry McLaurin, Washington's great.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Washington's playing hot football. But aside from Terry McLaurin, I mean,
- 49:35Speaker 3: they got Downy Brown, a wide receiver. Two. You might
- 49:37Speaker 3: see a little bit of you know, jameson crowded wide receiver. Three. Possibly,
- 49:43Speaker 3: I think it's Noah Brown. He even still might be hurt.
- 49:45Speaker 3: You know, I can't. I don't even know their third receiver.
- 49:47Speaker 3: So they're gonna use that tight end spot a good amount.
- 49:49Speaker 3: And they have and it's like, Okay, Nikoby, Dean or
- 49:53Speaker 3: Bonn are going to cover a tight end without Nikobe.
- 49:56Speaker 3: Now it's well, they're gonna throw a ball on that
- 49:58Speaker 3: tight end and give themselves the best opportunity to stop
- 50:01Speaker 3: the use of the tight end, which leaves which leaves
- 50:04Speaker 3: Orang Brooks and just in the middle of the field,
- 50:06Speaker 3: and that's where I think the confusion was. Last game,
- 50:08Speaker 3: there was a lot of confusion where you saw him
- 50:10Speaker 3: shadowing a running back coming out of the backfield. That's
- 50:12Speaker 3: leaving a slot receiver wide open in the middle. So
- 50:15Speaker 3: I think there's some there's it comes down to chemistry
- 50:20Speaker 3: and then also a big thing that really wasn't concerning,
- 50:24Speaker 3: but it's frustrating to see, you know, your third and
- 50:27Speaker 3: third down, third and eight, third and ten, third and twelve.
- 50:29Speaker 3: These corners got to stop playing ten ten yards off,
- 50:31Speaker 3: fifteen yards off. I've seen that from Sleigh a bunch
- 50:35Speaker 3: of times this year. I've seen that. You know, it's
- 50:36Speaker 3: just Washington is a team that's hot right now, and
- 50:40Speaker 3: for me, the concern is we can't let you can't
- 50:43Speaker 3: let them jump early. You can't let them jump especially
- 50:45Speaker 3: with I mean, Jane Daniels has just been unreal. It's
- 50:51Speaker 3: just it's and it's honestly gave the point where it's
- 50:54Speaker 3: frustrating that for the next few years, he's going to
- 50:57Speaker 3: be an opponent we see twice a year. It's quite
- 51:00Speaker 3: It's one of those where it's like it's now like, Okay,
- 51:03Speaker 3: I'm not tired of him being good. I just don't
- 51:06Speaker 3: want to play him twice a year. Yeah, but we're
- 51:09Speaker 3: in a position now where look, this is, this is,
- 51:11Speaker 3: it comes down to this. We got to get to
- 51:13Speaker 3: the next game. Those third downs are going to be huge,
- 51:16Speaker 3: even fourth downs. Commanded to go for it on fourth
- 51:19Speaker 3: down all the time. They their percentage of success rate
- 51:23Speaker 3: on fourth downs eighty eight percent.
- 51:24Speaker 1: And Jayden Dash is the one getting a lot of
- 51:26Speaker 1: those conversions too on third and fourth.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Down, whether he's doing it with his legs rolling out
- 51:31Speaker 3: or he's buying more time for someone to get open. Yeah,
- 51:33Speaker 3: it can't fall apart. And I think it does start
- 51:36Speaker 3: with that. I wouldn't call it a whole, but that
- 51:39Speaker 3: lack of chemistry at the linebacker spot now now with
- 51:41Speaker 3: the Kobe d.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Now, I think I think it's a really really good
- 51:44Speaker 1: answer for that question and that particular topic and something
- 51:47Speaker 1: we definitely need to keep our eyes on during this
- 51:49Speaker 1: NFC Championship game. And again, folks, we are talking to
- 51:52Speaker 1: Tom from Daily Dose. He can follow him on the
- 51:54Speaker 1: Twitter slash x at Daily Bird's three to zero two.
- 51:58Speaker 1: He's a great, great follow And let's move on to
- 52:01Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts. Jalen Hurts struggled and has had challenges this
- 52:06Speaker 1: past week, for sure, we all know that. But once
- 52:09Speaker 1: again he didn't turn the ball over, which was key
- 52:13Speaker 1: in the divisional round matchup. And I guess, aside from Hurts,
- 52:18Speaker 1: whether it's him getting the ball out faster Tom or
- 52:21Speaker 1: keeping his eyes downfield, what do you think is the
- 52:24Speaker 1: biggest red flag on this Eagles offense that you saw
- 52:28Speaker 1: that the Eagles are gonna need to clean up. We
- 52:30Speaker 1: were just talking about the defense, what they need to
- 52:32Speaker 1: clean up? What about this offense? You know that they're
- 52:35Speaker 1: really gonna need to clean up against the Commanders.
- 52:38Speaker 3: You know, I do think it is Jalen Hurts. I'm
- 52:40Speaker 3: a big Jaalen Hurts. Then you know, anyone who's who's
- 52:42Speaker 3: checked my page out, anyone who's done anything, knows that
- 52:45Speaker 3: I will defend Jalen Hurts. He's look, he's my favorite
- 52:48Speaker 3: Eagle man. But it comes to this. You know, this
- 52:51Speaker 3: is a this is the team now that and everyone's
- 52:54Speaker 3: staying for the next for the future. You know how
- 52:56Speaker 3: you guys a lot of these guys under contract.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yep.
- 52:59Speaker 3: You're at the point now where, like the fans want
- 53:02Speaker 3: to win. It's now not about getting the team and
- 53:05Speaker 3: you know, getting them used to the team. No, it's
- 53:08Speaker 3: it's a win now team. It is for the next
- 53:10Speaker 3: few years. It's a win now team. See the Packers game,
- 53:13Speaker 3: you know, the common theme was, Okay, he's coming off
- 53:16Speaker 3: with two three eighteen day injury with the concussion knocking
- 53:19Speaker 3: off the rust. I get it. Some people have said
- 53:22Speaker 3: this last one, Oh yeah, it was the weather. Look
- 53:25Speaker 3: Matthew Stafford was playing in that weather too. He threw
- 53:27Speaker 3: for three hundred and twenty four yards and I'm gonna
- 53:30Speaker 3: but then I go, look, Stafford and Hurts are two
- 53:33Speaker 3: totally different style quarterbacks. I do think it comes down though,
- 53:38Speaker 3: to his ability to stay calm inside of the pocket.
- 53:41Speaker 3: He took seven sacks. I get some of them on
- 53:43Speaker 3: the offensive line, but recently, I mean, look, anybody who
- 53:46Speaker 3: likes the game of football and does watch it, there's
- 53:48Speaker 3: a lot of happy feet going on in there. His
- 53:50Speaker 3: first two reads aren't there. His feet start to dance,
- 53:54Speaker 3: and you see not panic, but you see you know,
- 53:57Speaker 3: an increased sense of urgency to either get out or
- 54:00Speaker 3: to find someone quick right, some of those resulting bad throws,
- 54:04Speaker 3: some of those resultant, you know, taking a sack. Washington
- 54:09Speaker 3: does not have the best run defense. I believe their
- 54:11Speaker 3: bottom I believe they're bottom six. I believe they're twenty
- 54:13Speaker 3: sevenths or twenty fifth. So we know this, We've seen it.
- 54:16Speaker 3: They're gonna do everything they can to stop this run game.
- 54:19Speaker 1: They're gonna stack the box.
- 54:20Speaker 3: Absolutely, they're gonna you know, and so if the end
- 54:23Speaker 3: with Jalen's knee, now it's okay. We got a quarterback
- 54:25Speaker 3: that possibly has some you know, decreased mobility that takes
- 54:30Speaker 3: away from his game. It's gonna force jailn to be
- 54:32Speaker 3: a true pocket guy for a game. And we've seen
- 54:38Speaker 3: multiple games this season where Jalen Hurts has passed over
- 54:41Speaker 3: two fifty, almost reached the three hundred mark. So we
- 54:44Speaker 3: know he can. It's just the stakes are higher and
- 54:49Speaker 3: he's been here before. This is enough. This is the
- 54:51Speaker 3: second NFC championship in three years. We've seen him perform
- 54:53Speaker 3: in the biggest stage right in the Super Bowl. I mean,
- 54:55Speaker 3: it is probably his best career performance as an eagle,
- 55:00Speaker 3: So now it's he's been there before, but that is
- 55:06Speaker 3: that is the weakness right now. And it also makes
- 55:08Speaker 3: me think you take a look at some of his
- 55:11Speaker 3: you know, some of the routrees Kellen Moore is drawing up.
- 55:14Speaker 3: I mean, are are these guys not getting open? He
- 55:16Speaker 3: missing them? And you do look at some of the
- 55:19Speaker 3: routurries you're going on Twitter after the game, you can see,
- 55:21Speaker 3: like the next gen stats, some of these routrees this
- 55:23Speaker 3: season have just been bad. It's just real and it
- 55:26Speaker 3: almost looked just like they're just running wherever, and it's
- 55:30Speaker 3: let's get back to the RPO. Let's get back to
- 55:33Speaker 3: you know, using Dallas Gotter has been great when he's
- 55:36Speaker 3: used Yeah, let's get back to Hey, if our first
- 55:40Speaker 3: my first two or not, where's my tight end, where's
- 55:42Speaker 3: my running back out of the back field. But I
- 55:44Speaker 3: think it comes down to Jalen Hers's ability to just
- 55:47Speaker 3: stay calm in the pocket, trust your line, and just
- 55:52Speaker 3: do whatever is necessary to keep the drive a lot.
- 55:56Speaker 1: I really think that you hit on something. And it's
- 55:59Speaker 1: a good segue into the next topic because while we
- 56:02Speaker 1: talk about Dallas Goddard, we talk about these route trees
- 56:05Speaker 1: I think this Eagles offense needs some sort of an
- 56:08Speaker 1: X factor, and people are like, what do you mean
- 56:10Speaker 1: X factor? You know, they've been utilizing Saquon Barkley, they
- 56:13Speaker 1: have been able to use the RPO, especially when Jalen
- 56:15Speaker 1: Hurts is healthy. But you know, we are messaging each other,
- 56:20Speaker 1: pull back the curtain a little bit, folks. Tom and
- 56:22Speaker 1: I are messaging each other on Twitter recently in discussing
- 56:27Speaker 1: one Johan Dotson and just how he just wasn't utilized
- 56:31Speaker 1: much at all this year after the Eagles traded a
- 56:34Speaker 1: third round pick for him before the season started. His
- 56:37Speaker 1: regular season stats nineteen catches for two hundred and sixteen yards.
- 56:42Speaker 1: That's it, folks, that is it. But I wonder if
- 56:45Speaker 1: that X factor could potentially be a Johan Dotson heading
- 56:49Speaker 1: into this matchup. I don't know, Tom, why do you
- 56:52Speaker 1: think we have not seen much of Dotson really integrated
- 56:56Speaker 1: into those route trees into this offense because he is
- 57:00Speaker 1: he is a very very good and phenomenal route runner
- 57:03Speaker 1: in my opinion, I don't know, and I may be
- 57:05Speaker 1: biased because I'm a Penn State guy, But what are
- 57:08Speaker 1: your thoughts here?
- 57:10Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean when I when I first started the account.
- 57:12Speaker 3: I actually, fun fact, my first post was the trade
- 57:17Speaker 3: about Johan Dodson. You know, Eagles trade a third four,
- 57:20Speaker 3: So that was that was what that was my first post.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Now thinking about it with what you just asked, I mean,
- 57:27Speaker 3: anybody who I mean, he's on an offense where you
- 57:29Speaker 3: got aj Brown, you got Davonte Smith, Dallas gottor Saquon Barkley,
- 57:34Speaker 3: and he's wider receiver three in an offense that they're
- 57:37Speaker 3: not past. First, they're not right with with the quarter
- 57:40Speaker 3: which with Jana Hurst's ability to be mobile, you know,
- 57:42Speaker 3: run for ten fifteen however many yards, and then you
- 57:45Speaker 3: have Saquon, who right now is possibly the best back
- 57:48Speaker 3: in the in the NFL. It's just it's not a role.
- 57:53Speaker 3: I think that anyone was really expecting a wide receiver
- 57:58Speaker 3: three to step in and have you know, five undred
- 58:00Speaker 3: yards six hundred yards this season. I mean, but he
- 58:03Speaker 3: had his opportunities. Let's let's go back towards you know,
- 58:07Speaker 3: weeks two, three, and four, A J. Brown goes down
- 58:09Speaker 3: after the Green Bay game, he's out with that nursing
- 58:12Speaker 3: that injury. He was wide receiver two for three games
- 58:15Speaker 3: and just was nowhere to be found. And especially for
- 58:19Speaker 3: a guy who we saw in Washington. He great route runner.
- 58:22Speaker 3: He had pretty good years in Washington. I mean, and
- 58:27Speaker 3: look at the quarterbacks he had. I mean he one
- 58:29Speaker 3: year he had he had Sam Howell. Yeah, coming to
- 58:32Speaker 3: this offense, you know, I think people right away thought,
- 58:34Speaker 3: oh my god, he's going to be, you know, phenomenal
- 58:38Speaker 3: in this in this offense as a wide receiver three.
- 58:40Speaker 3: But it's it's where you getting your opportunities from. You know,
- 58:43Speaker 3: he had thirty three targets this year, and eleven of
- 58:46Speaker 3: them came in one game against New York and Leekue eighteen,
- 58:48Speaker 3: where he'd seven catches for ninety four yards. But you know,
- 58:51Speaker 3: let's you go back to twenty twenty two and twenty
- 58:53Speaker 3: twenty three. I mean, he had five hundred yards perth
- 58:55Speaker 3: season rookie year, seven touchdowns, and then twenty thirty three
- 58:58Speaker 3: four but he was wide receiver two in an offense
- 59:01Speaker 3: that they didn't have a real run game, so they
- 59:03Speaker 3: were trying to get the ball of Terry McLaurin. Yeah,
- 59:05Speaker 3: I think he's just very deep down in a star
- 59:08Speaker 3: studded offense that's that's a run first scheme. So I
- 59:13Speaker 3: think he's gonna have a good you know, roll into
- 59:16Speaker 3: this playoffs. He had one with against Los Angeles. I'm sorry,
- 59:20Speaker 3: he had one against green Back yep, and then you know,
- 59:23Speaker 3: just kind of trickles down from there. I think if
- 59:26Speaker 3: he's someone they should get maybe three targets, four targets
- 59:30Speaker 3: in this next game. See if he can't get thirty
- 59:32Speaker 3: five yards or something like that.
- 59:34Speaker 1: Well, Tom, you know, I'm gonna let you go here,
- 59:37Speaker 1: But before I do, I don't want to put the
- 59:40Speaker 1: car before the horse here. Look the Commanders, and should
- 59:43Speaker 1: the Eagles make it to the Super Bowl, the team
- 59:45Speaker 1: that they will end up facing if they do make
- 59:47Speaker 1: it again, they're gonna try to stop Saquon Barkley as
- 59:49Speaker 1: much as possible. You know, we're talking about it before
- 59:52Speaker 1: this is this is a run first team. They are
- 59:54Speaker 1: not a pass first team. Saquon Barkley rules. All teams
- 59:59Speaker 1: that face the are going to try to neutralize him.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: They're going to try to neutralize the offensive line of
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: this Eagles team. That's truly the only way that the
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Eagles offense I think can really be stopped. So when
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: you look at the Commanders and even other teams left
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: in the AFC, do you see any of these teams
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: really being able to neutralize the Eagles rushing attack as
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: we are in the latter part of the playoffs here,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: what are your thoughts?
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Simple answers. Now, I mean, it's just this is I
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: think the best rushing team we've ever seen. Yeah, in
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: all football. It doesn't matter if his Eagles, doesn't matter
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: who it is. I mean his first season, you know,
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: two thousand and five rushing yards a season with the
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: offensive line he has and the way they're playing and
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: the way he's just running the ball where there's multiple
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: home run plays.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Yeah, every game.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: He has, he's had two home run plays a game,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: just about. I just I just don't see a team
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: in the league that will stop him the end of story.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: I just not the ones lined up right if potentially
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: you know Buffalo, No, we saw what the Ravens did
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: to them on the ground. We saw Derek Kenry have
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: a very pretty good game. We saw la Mark Stan
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: plays and have a good game. So we know that,
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: and we have a better rushing attack than the Ravens,
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: and we saw what the Ravens did to them. The Chiefs,
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: I don't think they stand a chance against their wrong game,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: especially Washington as well their bottom six. I think Sunday
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: it all comes down to if they can't stop say
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Kwon Barkley, There's no way the Eagles do not walk
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: it out of a win. I just don't see it.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: I am in agreement with you, and it's gonna be fun.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: It's gonna be interesting. We are on pins and needles
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: for sure awaiting this NFC Championship game, whether or not
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Philadelphia Yasicals are going to be heading to the Super
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Bowl again. Folks. We're talking to Tommy from Daily Dose
