- 0:00Speaker 1: On to the Big Ten presented by PrizePix, Ohio State
- 0:03Speaker 1: and USC. Man, this one is probably more interesting than
- 0:07Speaker 1: we might have thought just due to quarterback situation. Maybe
- 0:12Speaker 1: for both teams. I mean, he might have a certain
- 0:13Speaker 1: amount of play, but is he going to play well?
- 0:15Speaker 1: Because he certainly didn't last week in Camp Randall. So
- 0:17Speaker 1: Tom Hannafin, it's do or die for USC. They are
- 0:22Speaker 1: at home. They need to find a way to win
- 0:24Speaker 1: some of these games down the stretch, really all of
- 0:26Speaker 1: these games down the stretch because their margin for error
- 0:28Speaker 1: has evaporated with a loss at Wisconsin. Can they pull
- 0:32Speaker 1: this upset against an Ohio State team that won't have
- 0:36Speaker 1: Julian San back there?
- 0:38Speaker 2: How much does Matt Patricia get paid per year? Is
- 0:40Speaker 2: it about $ 3 million a year?
- 0:42Speaker 3: I'll tell you his salary in a second.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Believe that. This is where Matt Patricia is going to
- 0:46Speaker 2: make his money. This is a situation where Ryan Day
- 0:49Speaker 2: walks into his office and says, hey, put Jaden Maiava
- 0:52Speaker 2: in a blender. And there is at least the example
- 0:56Speaker 2: of what happened just last week to USC on the road, granted,
- 1:00Speaker 2: at one of the more difficult places to play in
- 1:02Speaker 2: the Big Ten in Madison, Wisconsin. So the fact that
- 1:06Speaker 2: Madison and Wisconsin were able to trouble Jane Maiava throughout
- 1:11Speaker 2: this game, not much of a running game to speak
- 1:13Speaker 2: of for USC. They were able to keep Jaden Maiava
- 1:16Speaker 2: off his feet pretty consistent and keep him moving around.
- 1:19Speaker 2: They kept him guessing when it came to the passing game,
- 1:22Speaker 2: neutralized that passing attack. The evidence is there, and if anything,
- 1:25Speaker 2: I think Ohio State probably has better personnel to execute
- 1:29Speaker 2: something similar and to really make this difficult for Maiava.
- 1:33Speaker 2: The issue for Ohio State throughout the season has been
- 1:35Speaker 2: they don't have a tremendous pass rush. They don't have
- 1:38Speaker 2: the ability to get home with just four passes. So
- 1:41Speaker 2: if you are sending multiple guys, you've got to constantly
- 1:43Speaker 2: be changing the picture for Jaden Maiava so he is
- 1:46Speaker 2: guessing on a regular basis. So I think Matt Patricia
- 1:49Speaker 2: and this defense are going to be relied upon heavily.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's interesting, during the offseason, the three of us had
- 1:54Speaker 2: a conversation here on The Power 2, the greatest show
- 1:57Speaker 2: in the history of college football on the College Football
- 1:58Speaker 2: Addiction YouTube channel, that, okay, who's the better wide receiver?
- 2:03Speaker 2: Which one would you prefer to have, Malachi Toney or
- 2:05Speaker 2: Jeremiah Smith? And we've seen the way that Miami utilizes
- 2:09Speaker 2: Malachi Toney in that you just need to throw the
- 2:11Speaker 2: man a bubble screen and in space he can kill you.
- 2:14Speaker 2: You can double him. He can still kill you. Jeremiah
- 2:17Speaker 2: Smith is still that lethal, but he's not the same
- 2:21Speaker 2: athlete in that you can do more with Malachi Toney
- 2:25Speaker 2: because he is smaller, he's quicker, he's more nimble in space.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Jeremiah Smith is not the type of dude that, like, hey,
- 2:32Speaker 2: I can put him in a phone booth and he's
- 2:34Speaker 2: going to win. He's closer to a Julio Jones or
- 2:36Speaker 2: a Larry Fitzgerald, as we've talked about before. Bottom line,
- 2:40Speaker 2: the quarterback needs to be able to get Jeremiah Smith
- 2:42Speaker 2: the football, and this entire offense all season long under
- 2:46Speaker 2: Arthur Smith has been spam number four as often as
- 2:49Speaker 2: humanly possible. If this is Fahey as your starting quarterback,
- 2:54Speaker 2: is this kind of a service academy-style offense? where it's like, hey,
- 2:58Speaker 2: we're going to try and limit him to maybe 15
- 3:01Speaker 2: pass attempts? Do you trust him a lot more than
- 3:03Speaker 2: what we saw his last time out when Sane came
- 3:06Speaker 2: out into the game and was put into a sling?
- 3:09Speaker 2: Is it a different starting quarterback? We've heard Octavian St.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Clair has been in the mix, but not necessarily overwhelmed anyone.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I've talked about Justin Martin being a part of that
- 3:19Speaker 2: quarterback room. He started Big Ten games, so I'm curious
- 3:22Speaker 2: to see what Ohio State does here, but entirely different.
- 3:25Speaker 2: hinges on that. I think this is going to be
- 3:27Speaker 2: a low-scoring affair. I think the over-under in this game
- 3:30Speaker 2: is 51.5. Like all great Big Ten games this season,
- 3:35Speaker 2: take the under, in my opinion, because I don't think
- 3:37Speaker 2: Ohio State is going to be putting up tons and
- 3:39Speaker 2: tons of points, and it's going to be reliant upon
- 3:43Speaker 2: Matt Patricia and his defense limiting Jade Maiava. I think
- 3:46Speaker 2: USC obviously is desperate. They have something to play for.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Coliseum is not a difficult place to play. I think
- 3:53Speaker 2: Ohio State is going to be able to be more
- 3:55Speaker 2: physical and is still going to be able to run
- 3:57Speaker 2: the football against USC. That's something we've known throughout the years,
- 4:01Speaker 2: that USC's defense is going to give up points, whether
- 4:04Speaker 2: it's to Jeremiah Smith or not. But a lot of
- 4:07Speaker 2: this hinges on the quarterback position, obviously, for Ohio State.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I just think this is something where the Buckeye defense
- 4:13Speaker 2: has to be the star of the show.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I'll get right back to this clip of the power
- 4:17Speaker 1: to with Tom Hannafin and Cole Thompson here on the
- 4:20Speaker 1: college football addiction network. But first we made all of
- 4:22Speaker 1: these picks over on the live show. You can go
- 4:24Speaker 1: check that out to see all the picks, but I'll
- 4:26Speaker 1: tell you what right now, what I like Jaden ball.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Give me the more on his rushing total. I think
- 4:31Speaker 1: you can get over the 77.5. I think Florida will
- 4:33Speaker 1: need to establish the run for this game to be competitive.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I like Gunnar Stockton's passing touchdowns. Give me the more
- 4:40Speaker 1: on that 1.5. And then I love the pairing of
- 4:43Speaker 1: Jaden Ball's anytime touchdowns and Nate Frazier's anytime touchdowns. Give
- 4:47Speaker 1: me the more on both those. Pair two of those together.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Pair anything else you like in this college football slate, weekends,
- 4:53Speaker 1: upcoming lineups, and you've got a lineup set.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Use our code HMA.
- 4:57Speaker 1: All new users who play a $ 5 lineup and win
- 5:00Speaker 1: their first $ 5 lineup get 150 lineups instantly over on
- 5:04Speaker 1: the PrizePix app. We appreciate them for their support.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Go check them out. Yeah, I would agree. $ 3. 75 million
- 5:11Speaker 3: is what Matt Patricia thinks. So, yeah, again, you're not wrong.
- 5:14Speaker 3: On the same token, though, let's flip it to the
- 5:16Speaker 3: other side.
- 5:17Speaker 4: You are right.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I think this is going to be one of those
- 5:19Speaker 3: games where you need to take the ball out of
- 5:21Speaker 3: Fahey's hands until he gets into a groove of things. Now,
- 5:24Speaker 3: the thing that you have to look at is if
- 5:26Speaker 3: you play zone coverage against Jeremiah Smith, And it's been
- 5:29Speaker 3: proven by every single game that we have seen this
- 5:31Speaker 3: year with Iowa, with the first half against Texas, with
- 5:33Speaker 3: insert team here. You play zone defense against Jeremiah Smith,
- 5:37Speaker 3: he's cooking you. At this point, it's just, do you
- 5:40Speaker 3: have a guy in Fahey or St.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Clair?
- 5:42Speaker 3: And I say both. I think it's going to be Fahey.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But until it's official, we can say both. Are we
- 5:47Speaker 3: going to see one of them be able just to
- 5:50Speaker 3: find an open crease and get the ball to him?
- 5:52Speaker 3: But this is also a game where you can kind
- 5:54Speaker 3: of show you are multifaceted in your offense if you
- 5:57Speaker 3: are Ohio State underneath Arthur Smith. with the rushing attack.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Maybe you do lean more into what you have with
- 6:02Speaker 3: West and Jackson. Maybe you do lean a little bit
- 6:04Speaker 3: more into some run option plays if you're going to
- 6:06Speaker 3: use Fahey's legs or you're going to use Tavion St.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Clair's legs. Maybe you do just go ahead and try
- 6:11Speaker 3: to get some dink and dunk success and get the
- 6:13Speaker 3: ball to guys like Innes and Henry and your tight
- 6:16Speaker 3: ends and get them involved. And it's not just the
- 6:17Speaker 3: Jeremiah Smith show because as we've talked about, Jeremiah Smith
- 6:21Speaker 3: is accounting for over 51% of their offense and literally
- 6:25Speaker 3: just fine four. So you need to have a counterpunch
- 6:27Speaker 3: just in case you don't have a guy like Julian
- 6:30Speaker 3: Sandback for the rest of the year. And you are
- 6:32Speaker 3: trying to play within structure. On the flip side, though,
- 6:35Speaker 3: for a team like USC, this is where Gary Patterson
- 6:38Speaker 3: can make his crawling card. This is where Gary Patterson
- 6:41Speaker 3: can step on up and say, I pressured a young
- 6:43Speaker 3: quarterback into making mistakes. You play a lot of press
- 6:45Speaker 3: man coverage. You get a lot of pressure at the middle.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You go up against what is a good offensive line.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I want to preface this. Ohio State is a good
- 6:53Speaker 3: offensive line. It's nowhere near as good as it's been
- 6:55Speaker 3: in the last few years underneath this current regime.
- 6:58Speaker 4: It's nowhere near it.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Can you win with your outside opportunities with swat and
- 7:02Speaker 3: swims and stunts and formations to get pressure on Fahey
- 7:06Speaker 3: to make the rookie mistakes for a quarterback playing on
- 7:09Speaker 3: the road?
- 7:10Speaker 4: Against a competition that's in wounded animal mode. Can you
- 7:13Speaker 4: have that opportunity?
- 7:14Speaker 3: And on the flip side, when it comes to the offense,
- 7:17Speaker 3: we've seen Jada Maiava be able to take over games.
- 7:19Speaker 4: But the question is, what happens.
- 7:22Speaker 3: If it's a very similar construct to what Wisconsin did
- 7:25Speaker 3: last week?
- 7:26Speaker 4: And Wisconsin's a really good defense.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Like, Wisconsin underneath Luke Fickle has always been a progressive defense.
- 7:32Speaker 3: This year, it's like it's finally arrived. And they took
- 7:34Speaker 3: away the rushing attack. negative 17 rushing yards. They took
- 7:38Speaker 3: away the passing game because they forced a lot of
- 7:40Speaker 3: pressure up the middle. They got against USC's offensive line.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Can a guy like Jada Maiava learn from his mistakes
- 7:47Speaker 3: from last week and be able just to get quick
- 7:49Speaker 3: strikes and deal in a timely manner and just get
- 7:52Speaker 3: the ball out to avoid what would be a loss
- 7:55Speaker 3: of seven or a loss of eight and just find
- 7:57Speaker 3: some success to get a couple of first downs and
- 8:00Speaker 3: move the sticks? I mean, even in a game last
- 8:02Speaker 3: week where they were outscored 24-7, USC still finished with
- 8:06Speaker 3: more offensive yards.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I mean, it wasn't much.
- 8:08Speaker 3: It was 241 to 200, but they still finished with
- 8:11Speaker 3: more offensive yards. It was the dumb mistakes like the
- 8:14Speaker 3: three and outs and the missed field goals and the
- 8:17Speaker 3: interceptions back-to-back that really cost them and gave momentum to
- 8:20Speaker 3: a team like Wisconsin to be able to take the
- 8:23Speaker 3: time off the clock. Like, that's it. So can you
- 8:25Speaker 3: do enough offensively in this game that you learned from
- 8:27Speaker 3: last week to Spread the ball around. Hey, I got
- 8:31Speaker 3: Dixon Wyatt on the outside. Can he get a little
- 8:34Speaker 3: swing pass or a little screen and take it up
- 8:37Speaker 3: for seven? Then can I get something going with the
- 8:39Speaker 3: run game, whether it be with Jordan or whether it
- 8:40Speaker 3: be with Miller? And then on first down the next play,
- 8:44Speaker 3: maybe I get to Bowman. You just dink and dunk
- 8:46Speaker 3: your way to success against this Ohio State defense because
- 8:49Speaker 3: I will say if there's one avenue that you could
- 8:51Speaker 3: use if you're USC to get a win, It's putting
- 8:55Speaker 3: pressure on a young quarterback late in the fourth quarter,
- 8:57Speaker 3: down by a score, to have to drive down the
- 8:59Speaker 3: football field and get into the end zone. I think
- 9:02Speaker 3: that is a massive win in favor of USC. But
- 9:05Speaker 3: the bigger question is, has this team checked on out?
- 9:08Speaker 3: Now with two losses on the season, two really underwhelming losses,
- 9:13Speaker 3: knowing the Oregon game and knowing what that Oregon team
- 9:15Speaker 3: has become. And then Wisconsin, Wisconsin's a militant offense. Like,
- 9:20Speaker 3: say whatever you want about them, they rank 118th in passings.
- 9:23Speaker 3: and they didn't need to pass against you to still
- 9:25Speaker 3: beat you by two scores.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I just, yeah, I, I tried, I tend to think
- 9:32Speaker 1: that this is a really good spot for USC, but
- 9:38Speaker 1: is it a better spot than playing Wisconsin? Like it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: Ohio state with a backup that much. I mean, you
- 9:44Speaker 1: scored seven points, man. I know that was on the road,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but I just, I need to see it from USC.
- 9:50Speaker 1: That's just where I'm at. I think Ohio state wins
- 9:51Speaker 1: this game by 10. Like I think it is a
- 9:54Speaker 1: slow grind it out, drag them out game, but I just,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I don't have a lot of confidence right now in
- 9:58Speaker 1: the Trojans, but. prove me wrong. I think Ohio State
- 10:01Speaker 1: by 10.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Give me Ohio State 18 to 13.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Real ugly.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Real, real ugly.
- 10:09Speaker 4: I'll go uglier. I think Ohio State blows them out.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Really?
- 10:14Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 10:15Speaker 3: I personally think that after what we have seen in
- 10:18Speaker 3: the last two games, I'm with TJ.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I need to see it. I need to know that
- 10:23Speaker 4: you haven't quit.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Because if we already have people, we're not even done
- 10:26Speaker 3: with the season and we have people coming up with
- 10:28Speaker 3: hot boards for open job candidacies where.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Lincoln Riley's name is on it.
- 10:33Speaker 3: And there's a part of me that says, I kind
- 10:35Speaker 3: of think USC at this point is kind of done
- 10:38Speaker 3: with this tenure. If they really are, they're going to
- 10:42Speaker 3: show you on Saturday that they kind of want to
- 10:43Speaker 3: be done with Lincoln Riley. Lincoln Riley kind of wants
- 10:45Speaker 3: to be done with them. I think it's a hard
- 10:47Speaker 3: fought battle, at least for the first half. But until
- 10:49Speaker 3: I see it, I'm not going to believe in it.
- 10:51Speaker 3: You scored seven points against Wisconsin. That was on you
- 10:54Speaker 3: with mental mistakes, with blundering errors. And I said two
- 10:58Speaker 3: weeks ago, there's a world where I could see them
- 11:00Speaker 3: losing Camp Randall and come home against them and win
- 11:02Speaker 3: against Ohio State.
- 11:04Speaker 4: That team still has to show on up.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And until they do, I think in the second half,
- 11:08Speaker 3: that's where you watch as Ohio State maybe runs a
- 11:10Speaker 3: militant offense, but they get points on the board.
- 11:13Speaker 4: And maybe it's like.
- 11:13Speaker 3: 14-14 at halftime, and then it becomes a 28-14 finish.
- 11:16Speaker 4: I'm going to go 28-17. I think that Ohio State
- 11:20Speaker 4: wins this one by double digits.
