- 2:33Speaker 4: It was Wednesday, May night was hot in Los Angeles.
- 2:36Speaker 4: We were working the night Watch out of homicide detail.
- 2:38Speaker 4: My partner's Ed Jacobs. The boss's Captain Mormon. My name's Friday.
- 2:41Speaker 4: It was six forty seven pm when I got back
- 2:43Speaker 4: to the Capitol Avenue Auto Corp. Gotti's number eleven.
- 2:47Speaker 5: No, no reason in the world for it. I tried
- 2:49Speaker 5: to reason with him. He wouldn't even listen. It's the
- 2:51Speaker 5: craziest thing I ever saw.
- 2:52Speaker 6: Yes, and Jeorde, you find the phone right? Yeah?
- 2:54Speaker 4: I checked the office. Lope says. They picked up Daniels
- 2:56Speaker 4: a few minutes ago. They'd bring him downtown.
- 2:58Speaker 7: Now they got him that they're going to put him in.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Well, it depends, ma'am. It's going to take a little
- 3:02Speaker 4: more investigating first.
- 3:02Speaker 7: I don't see what else you need. He threatened us
- 3:04Speaker 7: with a gun. Me and Doris asked me if that
- 3:06Speaker 7: isn't a crime.
- 3:07Speaker 6: I don't know what is a few more questions we'd
- 3:09Speaker 6: like to ask you, man, if you don't mind, couple
- 3:10Speaker 6: of things we'd like to clear up.
- 3:11Speaker 5: I told you just how it happened, Doris, I'll tell
- 3:13Speaker 5: you the same thing. It's just a crazy old man.
- 3:15Speaker 5: If you ask me how to be put away?
- 3:17Speaker 4: Do you ever have any trouble with mister Daniels before
- 3:19Speaker 4: this afternoon? Miss Cameron?
- 3:20Speaker 7: Excuse me? The baby?
- 3:21Speaker 4: Yes?
- 3:22Speaker 7: What is it now? Honey? Can't you sleep? You try now?
- 3:25Speaker 4: I want you.
- 3:25Speaker 7: Daddy'll be home pretty soon.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Boy, you try and sleep, Miss Cameron.
- 3:30Speaker 7: Yes, oh, you'll be quiet now. I don't want any
- 3:32Speaker 7: trouble from you. You heard me, be quiet now?
- 3:34Speaker 6: You got your hands full?
- 3:35Speaker 5: Man, don't I know what a canary of four months
- 3:38Speaker 5: old baby trying to keep house on an auto court.
- 3:40Speaker 7: I knew it was going to be like this. I
- 3:41Speaker 7: never would have left passer Robles.
- 3:43Speaker 4: You've only been in town a week or so? Is
- 3:45Speaker 4: that right?
- 3:45Speaker 7: It's closer to two weeks. Seems more like two months.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Trying to get along in a place like this, a
- 3:49Speaker 5: room in the bath, no place to cook, rints out diapers.
- 3:52Speaker 7: It's terrible.
- 3:53Speaker 5: I told my husband, he should come down here alone,
- 3:55Speaker 5: find us a place to live first, then we could move.
- 3:57Speaker 7: No, he had to have it his way.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Say, your husband made the first contact with Daniels. He
- 4:02Speaker 4: gave him a deposit on this apartment.
- 4:04Speaker 7: That's right.
- 4:04Speaker 5: The same day started work at the aircraft plant in
- 4:06Speaker 5: the valley. We've been living in passor Robe since we
- 4:09Speaker 5: got married a month ago. Pete, that's my husband. You
- 4:12Speaker 5: get a lead on this aircraft job down here. Him
- 4:15Speaker 5: and Ralph came down signed.
- 4:16Speaker 7: Up for it.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Ralph, who's that, ma'am?
- 4:18Speaker 5: Ralph Ashby? He's Doris's husband. Doris Ashby, she's my best girlfriend.
- 4:21Speaker 5: We were neighbors out in passer Rob. I see we're
- 4:24Speaker 5: not doing much better than.
- 4:25Speaker 7: We are right now.
- 4:26Speaker 5: They're staying in another court up the street, same thing,
- 4:28Speaker 5: room in the bath. Doris is expecting to a poor kid.
- 4:32Speaker 7: Did you hear me? You'd be quiet now. You want
- 4:35Speaker 7: to wake up the baby.
- 4:36Speaker 4: About the arrangements your husband made with Daniels to Lease's apartment,
- 4:39Speaker 4: Miss Cameron.
- 4:40Speaker 5: When it was all this, we could go Monday, the
- 4:41Speaker 5: day after I moved down here, my husband and Ralph
- 4:44Speaker 5: Ashby saw the rental ad in the paper and they
- 4:46Speaker 5: went over and talked to Daniels. He said, all right,
- 4:48Speaker 5: he had an apartment for the Ashby's, the one for us,
- 4:51Speaker 5: nice places too.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I see.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Ralph and my husband signed the leases, gave him the
- 4:54Speaker 5: first and last month's rent in advance.
- 4:56Speaker 7: Was all decided.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Well, how is it you couldn't move in right away,
- 4:58Speaker 6: miss Cameron?
- 4:59Speaker 5: He said, he was in the apartment house redecorated. Daniels
- 5:02Speaker 5: Did I mean? He told Ralph and my husband the
- 5:04Speaker 5: apartments would probably be ready for us on the eighth.
- 5:06Speaker 5: That was yesterday, he said, the ninth, for sure, And
- 5:09Speaker 5: that's today, And.
- 5:10Speaker 4: You tried to move in this afternoon and Daniel's refused
- 5:12Speaker 4: to let you in. Is that it?
- 5:13Speaker 5: I had the movers get all our things out of
- 5:14Speaker 5: storage and move them out to the apartment. So then
- 5:16Speaker 5: my girlfriend, Doris, the movers were just starting to get
- 5:19Speaker 5: our furniture out of the van and move it into
- 5:20Speaker 5: the apartment when mister Daniels showed up. He acted like
- 5:23Speaker 5: a crazy man.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Would to give any reasons why he couldn't move him.
- 5:26Speaker 5: We tried to give us a lot of reasons. None
- 5:28Speaker 5: of them made any sense. She could ask Doris, She'll
- 5:30Speaker 5: tell you.
- 5:30Speaker 7: She was there with me.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Well, what did Daniel's say? Not just for instance.
- 5:33Speaker 5: We said a lot of things. First, he told us
- 5:35Speaker 5: there was no water in the apartments, hadn't been turned
- 5:37Speaker 5: on yet. He said the gas wasn't turned on either.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Well I knew that was a lie. I was in
- 5:41Speaker 5: the apartment late in the morning. Everything was fine, the
- 5:43Speaker 5: gas was.
- 5:44Speaker 7: Working, so was the water.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I see when I caught him in that lye, he
- 5:47Speaker 5: got madder than ever, made some more excuses. Then he
- 5:49Speaker 5: started yelling and swearing at me right there on the sidewalk.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Said the apartment just wasn't ready yet.
- 5:55Speaker 7: I told him he'd climb a tree. We signed the
- 5:57Speaker 7: least who paid the rent.
- 5:58Speaker 5: We were moving in anyway, told the movers to go
- 6:00Speaker 5: ahead take in the furniture.
- 6:02Speaker 6: What Daniels say then?
- 6:03Speaker 7: Nothing?
- 6:04Speaker 5: He just got real purple in the face, and he
- 6:05Speaker 5: put his hand in his coat pocket and he took
- 6:07Speaker 5: out a gun.
- 6:08Speaker 7: Pointed it at me and Doris, and I had the
- 6:09Speaker 7: baby in my arms.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Imagine that he actually told you he shoots you. You
- 6:13Speaker 4: tried to move in the apartment the right.
- 6:15Speaker 5: So many words, Yes, he did. He threatened the moving
- 6:17Speaker 5: man too. They tried to talk to him. He wouldn't listen.
- 6:20Speaker 5: We all tried to talk to him. We didn't make
- 6:22Speaker 5: any sense at all. I wasn't gonna take any chances
- 6:25Speaker 5: with the baby in my arm. Doris and I got
- 6:27Speaker 5: in the car and drove away, so the movers they
- 6:29Speaker 5: left with us. I can't say I'll blame them either.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Tat Daniels must be out of his mind. It's the
- 6:34Speaker 5: only thing Nighting figure real nut Well.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Did either you or your husband have any arguments with
- 6:38Speaker 4: him at all before this afternoon?
- 6:39Speaker 7: No, everything was fine. This afternoon was the second time
- 6:42Speaker 7: I ever spoke to the man.
- 6:43Speaker 4: He had no objections to your having children or pets
- 6:45Speaker 4: in the apartment.
- 6:46Speaker 7: None at all.
- 6:46Speaker 5: That's one of the first things my husband told Daniels
- 6:48Speaker 5: when he went to look at the apartment. We had
- 6:50Speaker 5: a baby in a canary. Daniels said it was all
- 6:52Speaker 5: right with him. He didn't object at all.
- 6:54Speaker 6: I understand there's six apartments in the building, Miss Cameron.
- 6:56Speaker 5: That right, Yes, that's right. They're all vacant as far
- 6:58Speaker 5: as I know. Daniel was just bought the bullion a
- 7:01Speaker 5: month ago. That's why he told my husband. Anyway, he
- 7:03Speaker 5: had the place redecorated and the work was all done.
- 7:05Speaker 5: The apartments are just sitting there. That's why I can't
- 7:07Speaker 5: understand it. Why won't he let us move in? Yes,
- 7:10Speaker 5: we paid our money, signed the least he gave us
- 7:13Speaker 5: any kind of a good reason why we shouldn't move in.
- 7:15Speaker 7: I could understand it.
- 7:16Speaker 5: But to keep us out for no reason at all,
- 7:18Speaker 5: to stand out there in the sidewalk and threaten to
- 7:20Speaker 5: shoot us if we move in, me with a baby
- 7:21Speaker 5: in my arms, I don't know.
- 7:23Speaker 7: He must be crazy.
- 7:24Speaker 4: You say you were in the apartment this morning, Missus Cameron.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Did you notice anything unusual about the place, anything out
- 7:28Speaker 4: of the ordinary. No?
- 7:29Speaker 7: Nothing.
- 7:30Speaker 4: When you say Daniels couldn't give any reason at all
- 7:32Speaker 4: why you shouldn't move in, just.
- 7:33Speaker 7: One, it convinced me.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I had gone before we left, Missus Cameron. We
- 7:42Speaker 4: took her crime report and had her sign it, and
- 7:44Speaker 4: then we drove back downtown to the squadroom where Geene
- 7:46Speaker 4: Bechdel and Lloyd Bond were waiting with the suspect, Edward Daniels.
- 7:50Speaker 4: They'd already checked him through our and eye. He had
- 7:52Speaker 4: no previous criminal record. They gave us a twenty two
- 7:55Speaker 4: caliber H and R Revolver along with six shells, which
- 7:57Speaker 4: had been found on the suspect at the time of
- 7:59Speaker 4: his arrest. The gun had been loaded. Pawn Shop records
- 8:03Speaker 4: showed that the weapon had been purchased by the suspect
- 8:05Speaker 4: and had been registered in his name. We had stenographer
- 8:08Speaker 4: Eleanor Eastlack type up the crime report and ed and
- 8:10Speaker 4: I took Daniels down the hall of the interrogation room.
- 8:13Speaker 4: He was a small, thin man, blue eyes, gray hair.
- 8:17Speaker 8: Don't know what all the fuss is about out in
- 8:19Speaker 8: the building. I can keep people out of for WANTA.
- 8:21Speaker 6: When we saw the leash signed with the Camerons. The
- 8:23Speaker 6: other couple too. They paid their rent. Why the sudden
- 8:25Speaker 6: change of heart.
- 8:26Speaker 8: I don't think that's any of your business. Mattered between
- 8:28Speaker 8: me and the tenant.
- 8:28Speaker 4: It's our business when you threaten them with a gun.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Daniel's assault with a deadly weapon, that's a felony.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Didn't hurt the woman, just wanted to scare. That's all
- 8:35Speaker 8: just a couple of farmers anyway. Never should have given
- 8:38Speaker 8: them the lease in the first place. While was a
- 8:39Speaker 8: kid with him, not bird chirping all the time.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Odd you happen to have that gun with you this afternoon.
- 8:44Speaker 8: Didn't happen to have it carry it all the time.
- 8:46Speaker 8: It's my business. Isn't it registered down here?
- 8:48Speaker 6: I mean, you got a permit to carry this gun.
- 8:50Speaker 8: Don't need a permit. Its registered, isn't it.
- 8:52Speaker 4: It gave you the idea because the gun's registered, you
- 8:54Speaker 4: can carry it around.
- 8:55Speaker 8: Your pocket, friend of mine. Nothing wrong with it, is there?
- 8:57Speaker 4: Having a gun registered is nothing more than keeping a
- 8:59Speaker 4: permanent record of it. You can keep the gun in
- 9:01Speaker 4: your home or in your office, but it doesn't give
- 9:02Speaker 4: you the right to carry it around with you.
- 9:03Speaker 8: Oh well, to tell me that when I had it registered?
- 9:07Speaker 6: You were told much of Daniels.
- 9:08Speaker 8: You know that, well, I don't remember.
- 9:10Speaker 6: It doesn't make much difference if you remember or not.
- 9:12Speaker 6: Nobody is a permit to threaten people with a gun.
- 9:14Speaker 8: Told you it wasn't going to hurt her. She just
- 9:16Speaker 8: kept arguing with me. I'm a sick man, you know.
- 9:18Speaker 8: Thought she was going to hit me.
- 9:19Speaker 4: You. Meanwhile, she was holding that baby in her arms.
- 9:21Speaker 4: I come off with, Daniels, what's this thing all about?
- 9:23Speaker 8: Told you before? I think that's my Because.
- 9:25Speaker 4: You signed a year's least with the cameras, you accepted
- 9:27Speaker 4: the first and last month's rent. You took their money,
- 9:29Speaker 4: you're advising they could move in this afternoon. When they
- 9:32Speaker 4: try to move in, you meet him at the front
- 9:33Speaker 4: door and threaten them with a gun. Now, what's it
- 9:34Speaker 4: all about? None of this makes any sense?
- 9:36Speaker 8: Change my mind. I'm not ready to rent them out yet.
- 9:38Speaker 6: Well, and why'd you sign that, least with the cameraon?
- 9:40Speaker 6: Sow about it, mister Daniels. If there's something in that
- 9:42Speaker 6: building you're trying to cover up, you might as well
- 9:44Speaker 6: tell there's a couple of men out there now checking it.
- 9:46Speaker 8: You can go ahead and check. I don't care, they
- 9:48Speaker 8: won't find anything. Got nothing to hide. How long you
- 9:50Speaker 8: lived here, Daniels, eighteen twenty years.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Why where'd you live before you came here?
- 9:55Speaker 8: Ohio? Cleveland, Ohio.
- 9:56Speaker 4: You ever been arrested?
- 9:58Speaker 8: Yeah, couple of traffic tickets. Cops said, I went through
- 10:01Speaker 8: a stop signal. It wasn't gilly though. What's the point anyway?
- 10:05Speaker 8: What are you trying to get at, trying to force
- 10:07Speaker 8: me to let those people in that apartment.
- 10:08Speaker 6: I'm not trying to force into anything, Daniels. Business about
- 10:11Speaker 6: the lease is a civil matter that's between you and
- 10:12Speaker 6: the camerons.
- 10:13Speaker 8: And what are you holding me here for We told.
- 10:15Speaker 4: You you threatened that woman with a gun. She sent an
- 10:17Speaker 4: ADW report.
- 10:18Speaker 8: What do you mean ADW assault with a deadly weapon?
- 10:20Speaker 4: That's a pretty serious charge.
- 10:22Speaker 8: Daniels didn't hurt the woman, didn't even touch her.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Planted the gun at her, didn't you.
- 10:25Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 10:26Speaker 6: Gun was loaded, wasn't it.
- 10:27Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 10:27Speaker 6: Capable of being fired.
- 10:29Speaker 8: Yeah, But I wasn't going to shoot her. I told you,
- 10:31Speaker 8: just wanted to scare her off, get her out of there.
- 10:33Speaker 8: It's the truth. I wasn't going to shoot her. What
- 10:36Speaker 8: do I have to do to convince you?
- 10:37Speaker 4: You don't have to convince us.
- 10:39Speaker 8: What do you mean, who do I have to convince?
- 10:40Speaker 4: You? Got your choice? A judge or jury ed and
- 10:46Speaker 4: I took the suspect, Edward Daniels down to the main jail,
- 10:48Speaker 4: where we booke him in on suspicion of four sixty
- 10:50Speaker 4: seven PCADW. Before he was locked up, Daniels asked us
- 10:54Speaker 4: if we would take the keys to his car and
- 10:56Speaker 4: the keys to his apartment house to an Oliver Randall,
- 10:59Speaker 4: an employee of his who acted as a janitor and
- 11:01Speaker 4: general handyman at two other apartment houses Daniel's own. We
- 11:05Speaker 4: told him we would. After we left the main jail,
- 11:08Speaker 4: we checked by the office, and then we drove out
- 11:10Speaker 4: to the location of the apartment house to interview the
- 11:12Speaker 4: neighbors and deliver the keys to Daniel's handyman, Oliver Randall.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Other than telling us that they considered mister Daniels a
- 11:18Speaker 4: little eccentric, the neighbors were unable to give us any
- 11:21Speaker 4: additional information that might help us in the prosecution. After
- 11:25Speaker 4: we finished talking to the neighbors, we went across the
- 11:26Speaker 4: street to the apartment house. There were lights burning in
- 11:29Speaker 4: the upper rear apartment. We tried the bell, but there
- 11:31Speaker 4: was no answer. From the set of keys Daniels had
- 11:34Speaker 4: given us. We found the one that fit the door
- 11:36Speaker 4: and let ourselves in. We heard somebody moving around on
- 11:38Speaker 4: the floor above us. We went up and found a
- 11:40Speaker 4: man there who identified himself as Oliver Randall. He appeared
- 11:43Speaker 4: nervous and upset. There were papers and rags scattered over
- 11:46Speaker 4: the floor of the room.
- 11:47Speaker 9: Oh yeah, I was just cleaning up here. Mister Daniels
- 11:49Speaker 9: told me to be sure and clean the step the
- 11:51Speaker 9: papers and gentle.
- 11:52Speaker 6: I see, well, here's some keys for your Randall. Daniels
- 11:54Speaker 6: ask to get them to you.
- 11:55Speaker 9: Oh yeah, Piper and house keys. Mister Daniels was supposed
- 11:57Speaker 9: to meet me here, he said, eight o'clock. I think
- 11:59Speaker 9: that's but he said, I wonder where he is. You
- 12:01Speaker 9: know where he is.
- 12:02Speaker 4: He's in jail.
- 12:03Speaker 9: Oh what's he doing in jail? Did he do something wrong?
- 12:05Speaker 4: He's had a complaint file against him, assault with a
- 12:07Speaker 4: deadly weapon.
- 12:08Speaker 9: Where it happened he get mad at somebody. Mister Daniels
- 12:10Speaker 9: gotten awful, bad temper. When he gets mad at somebody,
- 12:13Speaker 9: he doesn't forget it. I know I worked for him.
- 12:15Speaker 9: How long have you worked for him, Randall? I don't know,
- 12:17Speaker 9: A long time, maybe five years.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I forget You say Daniels is a bad temper. Have
- 12:21Speaker 4: you ever known him to be violent? Randall?
- 12:22Speaker 9: How's that?
- 12:23Speaker 4: Well? Have you ever known him to be violent? I mean,
- 12:25Speaker 4: have you ever known him to hurt anyone?
- 12:26Speaker 9: I don't know. I don't remember. A lot of times
- 12:28Speaker 9: he says he's gonna do things. I work for him.
- 12:30Speaker 9: You know a lot of times he gets mad at me.
- 12:32Speaker 9: He says, I don't work fast than or I don't
- 12:34Speaker 9: do the right things. He always carries his gun, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 9: once he said he was gonna shoot me. I was
- 12:39Speaker 9: pretty scared. You live with mister Daniels, do you No,
- 12:41Speaker 9: I have a room downstairs in another apartment house Sea
- 12:44Speaker 9: Oones and place over on South Hoover. It's a nice room.
- 12:46Speaker 9: It's got a window in it.
- 12:48Speaker 6: You're on a regular salary, that the way you work?
- 12:50Speaker 9: Yeah, fifteen dollars a week. I get the room free two.
- 12:52Speaker 9: It's not bad.
- 12:53Speaker 4: You ever been arrested, Randall me?
- 12:55Speaker 9: No, I've never been arrested.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Have you ever been in the state hospital any kind
- 12:58Speaker 4: of an institution.
- 12:59Speaker 10: No.
- 12:59Speaker 9: I was put Camaio for a couple of years. I
- 13:01Speaker 9: didn't like it too much. I came down here to
- 13:03Speaker 9: live with my sister. She's dead now, she died about
- 13:06Speaker 9: four years ago. She's the one that got me this job.
- 13:09Speaker 9: You know that's Oh yeah, this isn't a bad job
- 13:11Speaker 9: at all. John's are pretty hard to get now, That's
- 13:14Speaker 9: what mister Daniels says. It's real tough to get a
- 13:16Speaker 9: good job. Now. That's why I do what I'm told.
- 13:18Speaker 9: I better get on fixing up this place.
- 13:21Speaker 4: How do all these rags and papers get here? Randal
- 13:23Speaker 4: the painters leaving behind?
- 13:25Speaker 9: Oh I guess so, I guess somebody left him here.
- 13:28Speaker 4: We understood the apartments were already cleaned up, they were
- 13:30Speaker 4: ready to move into.
- 13:31Speaker 9: What's that?
- 13:31Speaker 4: I say, we understood the apartments were all fixed up,
- 13:34Speaker 4: that they were ready for the tenants to move right into.
- 13:35Speaker 9: Oh, I don't know. I wouldn't know about that. Mister
- 13:38Speaker 9: Daniels takes care of renting the places. I just help him.
- 13:40Speaker 9: I do what he tells me.
- 13:42Speaker 6: Joe, Yeah, you notice that smell seems to be stronger
- 13:45Speaker 6: out in the hall.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I do. How long has it been
- 13:49Speaker 4: since the painters were working here? Randal? Do you know
- 13:50Speaker 4: that painters?
- 13:51Speaker 9: I don't know. A couple of days. I guess what's
- 13:53Speaker 9: the man?
- 13:54Speaker 4: That's a pretty strong smell. Might be painting or something
- 13:57Speaker 4: like that. Don't you notice it?
- 13:58Speaker 9: Oh? Yeah, I've been wondering that. I noticed that when
- 14:01Speaker 9: I came in. It might be from upstairs. The attic
- 14:03Speaker 9: painters were working up there too, I think.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Don't you think you ought to check it see what
- 14:07Speaker 6: it is?
- 14:08Speaker 9: Mister Daniels didn't tell me too. I guess they're better though.
- 14:12Speaker 9: Smell it's pretty strong. I guess I better see what
- 14:14Speaker 9: it is.
- 14:15Speaker 4: How do you get to the attic from here?
- 14:16Speaker 9: Down the end of the hall. There's a stairway there.
- 14:18Speaker 9: It goes right up in the attic. Off show you
- 14:20Speaker 9: all right, fine, Yeah, snows like gasoline or something.
- 14:26Speaker 6: Only apartments are vacans, that right, No one living in
- 14:28Speaker 6: the building.
- 14:28Speaker 9: All yeah, that's right. We go up the stairs here,
- 14:33Speaker 9: Sir Daniels had the whole place work over. Nobody here
- 14:36Speaker 9: at all? Right now, I guess he'll be moving in
- 14:38Speaker 9: pretty soon. It's gonna be a lot of work. Got
- 14:41Speaker 9: the other two apartment houses take care of, and there's
- 14:43Speaker 9: gonna be this place. It's gonna be a lot of work.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Daniels, Hire anyone else beside yourself to help out with
- 14:47Speaker 4: the work.
- 14:48Speaker 9: I mean, no, I don't think so. Just me. I
- 14:50Speaker 9: keep pretty busy. Here's the attic.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Yeah, it's must be where it's coming from.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Yeah, it's strong enough to knock you over in.
- 14:59Speaker 9: The light switch is over.
- 15:00Speaker 6: Here's a mess, sure mess, papers, boxes, pound a little rags.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Had five yeallon? Can they're on the floor, kerosena. Yeah,
- 15:14Speaker 4: it's just about empty too.
- 15:15Speaker 9: It's all spilled all over the floor. Mister Daniels ain't
- 15:18Speaker 9: gonna like that. He's gonna get mad.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Usually keep this stuff up here. Do you Rental?
- 15:21Speaker 9: No, I guess it was with the painters stuff. There's
- 15:24Speaker 9: cans and things on the table there. I guess he
- 15:26Speaker 9: got knocked off and spilled spilled all over the place,
- 15:29Speaker 9: didn't they.
- 15:29Speaker 6: Well, how come a painting crew didn't take their stuff
- 15:31Speaker 6: with him when they left? All this equipment here are
- 15:33Speaker 6: all finished with a job, aren't they?
- 15:34Speaker 9: I guess so you'd have to ask mister Daniels about that.
- 15:37Speaker 9: They're all finished on the inside. I know that they
- 15:39Speaker 9: had the outside to do though. Maybe that's why they
- 15:41Speaker 9: left their stuff.
- 15:42Speaker 4: It was not a very safe way to leave it. Rags, papers,
- 15:45Speaker 4: Look here, kerosene spilled all over. You better get this
- 15:47Speaker 4: place cleaned up first, don't you think, Rendal?
- 15:48Speaker 9: I don't know. I sure wish mister Daniels was here.
- 15:52Speaker 9: You won't let him know what?
- 15:54Speaker 4: Do you mean? Let him know what?
- 15:55Speaker 9: Don't tell him? I'll let you see the attic. Huh.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Nine thirty five pm. Ed and I left the handyman
- 16:03Speaker 4: Oliver Randall at his apartment house, went outside and got
- 16:06Speaker 4: in the car. Neither one of us could find any
- 16:08Speaker 4: explanation for it, but we both had a hunch that
- 16:10Speaker 4: was something wrong with a setup. We drove to a
- 16:12Speaker 4: neighborhood service station, called the office and told them we
- 16:15Speaker 4: were going to stake the apartment house. We drove back
- 16:18Speaker 4: and found a place to park where we could keep
- 16:19Speaker 4: the building under surveillance without being seen. We waited ten
- 16:23Speaker 4: pm ten thirty eleven o'clock. At a few minutes past eleven,
- 16:27Speaker 4: we saw Randall come out of the front door of
- 16:29Speaker 4: the apartment, get in a blue sedan and drive off.
- 16:32Speaker 4: We followed him to an apartment building on West Pico
- 16:34Speaker 4: and saw him uter a rear door. We waited. At
- 16:37Speaker 4: twelve fifteen am, ed got to a phone called Captain
- 16:40Speaker 4: Bernard at the Business Office and notified him of our location.
- 16:44Speaker 4: At twelve forty five am, two men arrived to relieve
- 16:46Speaker 4: us and we briefed him on the facts. We drove
- 16:49Speaker 4: back to the office, made out of fifteen point seven
- 16:51Speaker 4: to Captain Norman, and signed out. At four o'clock. The
- 16:54Speaker 4: next afternoon, we reported back in for work. We checked
- 16:57Speaker 4: the book and found a message that the suspect, Edward
- 16:59Speaker 4: Daniels had been released from jail that morning on a
- 17:01Speaker 4: wrint bail twenty five hundred dollars. The wrint was returnable Thursday,
- 17:05Speaker 4: May tenth. There was also a message in the book
- 17:07Speaker 4: for us to contact Daniel's attorney, A Richard Tiernan ed
- 17:10Speaker 4: put in the call.
- 17:11Speaker 6: Yes, sir, I see what's that? Yeah, yeah, I know
- 17:16Speaker 6: all right, mister Turnan, Yeah, thank you, goodbye. You are right, Joe,
- 17:20Speaker 6: what do you mean? Daniel's lawyer want to know how
- 17:22Speaker 6: serious the charges are. It says Daniels is pretty upset.
- 17:24Speaker 6: It seems he had some trouble lately his insurance company.
- 17:27Speaker 4: More, what's the matter? You have an accident?
- 17:28Speaker 6: Insurance company doesn't seem to think it was an accident
- 17:30Speaker 6: happened two months ago at an apartment house over in
- 17:32Speaker 6: South Union. Yeah, burn don.
- 17:44Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 17:48Speaker 3: force in action.
- 17:56Speaker 4: Thursday May tenth, four thirty pm, we contacted the Fire
- 18:00Speaker 4: Department's arson Squad to find out if the fire at
- 18:02Speaker 4: Daniel's apartment house on South Union Avenue two months before
- 18:05Speaker 4: was under investigation. After checking back, they told us investigators
- 18:09Speaker 4: from the arson squad had found a large amount of
- 18:11Speaker 4: kerosene to be present and some of the burned timbers
- 18:13Speaker 4: found in the debris after the fire was put out.
- 18:16Speaker 4: They said that mister Daniels had admitted after the fire
- 18:18Speaker 4: that the apartment building had been recently redecorated, and that
- 18:21Speaker 4: kerosene paint and other inflammables had been stored in the
- 18:24Speaker 4: attic of the building. Ed and I contacted the insurance
- 18:27Speaker 4: adjuster handling the case as Snyder Peebles, and he told
- 18:30Speaker 4: us there wasn't any doubt in his mind that the
- 18:31Speaker 4: fire at Daniel's apartment house two months before was of
- 18:34Speaker 4: incendiary origin, but he said so far the investigators were
- 18:38Speaker 4: unable to prove it. The one thing that seemed to
- 18:40Speaker 4: puzzle him was if Daniels planned on burning down the building,
- 18:43Speaker 4: why did he go to the trouble and expense of
- 18:45Speaker 4: redecorating first.
- 18:47Speaker 9: Well.
- 18:47Speaker 4: As soon as it was dark ed and I drove
- 18:48Speaker 4: out relieved the men on stakeout at the apartment house
- 18:51Speaker 4: on West Pico, where the handyman Oliver Randall had his room.
- 18:55Speaker 4: They reported no unusual activity during the day. Seven thirty
- 18:59Speaker 4: two pm, Randal came out of the apartment house, got
- 19:01Speaker 4: in a car and drove off.
- 19:03Speaker 6: We followed him. If we got this Randall made right,
- 19:05Speaker 6: it shouldn't be too long before we find out Daniels
- 19:08Speaker 6: are using him to work something out. I'm pretty sure
- 19:10Speaker 6: we can count on that.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe I'll watch it d he's turning down Union. Yeah,
- 19:15Speaker 4: he's pulling up ahead. Don't cry him.
- 19:18Speaker 6: There's a good spot here. Shouldn't be able to see it,
- 19:20Speaker 6: all right, pull.
- 19:20Speaker 4: Up in here, all right, it's fine. He's getting out
- 19:23Speaker 4: of the car.
- 19:23Speaker 6: He's going over the house, down the driveway, going around back.
- 19:28Speaker 6: He's out of side.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Now right, let's go.
- 19:34Speaker 6: There's still no lights in the place. Oh yeah, there
- 19:36Speaker 6: they go in the basement. All right, easy, let's take
- 19:38Speaker 6: it easily. Yeah, I think I can see the back
- 19:42Speaker 6: door from here, right, Come on, easy?
- 19:44Speaker 4: Now, what is it? Right? Easy with this story? Ed?
- 19:50Speaker 4: Don't let it be huh? Why now sounds like somebody
- 19:54Speaker 4: upstairs the right Come on, watch a step man, come
- 20:03Speaker 4: on next floor up? Yeah, yeah, it's up in the attic.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Come on, all right, come on through the store back
- 20:20Speaker 4: in the corner.
- 20:21Speaker 6: End, I say, all, I told you, what's the mattic.
- 20:24Speaker 4: There's a fire right over in the corner. I'll get it.
- 20:25Speaker 9: Hold on him, right, well, don't put it out.
- 20:29Speaker 11: You needn't help show you're getting a right So I'm
- 20:31Speaker 11: getting an r a minute.
- 20:33Speaker 4: All I got it.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Okay, you want to get the lights and I got him.
- 20:38Speaker 4: All right, Randall, what's the story.
- 20:40Speaker 9: You told me to do it? He told me to
- 20:42Speaker 9: come back tonight and burn the whole place down.
- 20:44Speaker 6: Who told you?
- 20:45Speaker 9: He said, I'll you go back to the place, to
- 20:47Speaker 9: the attic, light a match, that's all, and then get out.
- 20:49Speaker 9: Mister Daniels. That's just what he said.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Daniels told you to do this.
- 20:52Speaker 9: He told me, just light a fire and nobody'd know.
- 20:54Speaker 9: He said, there wasn't going to be any trouble, no
- 20:56Speaker 9: trouble at all.
- 20:57Speaker 4: It gives you the edge, doesn't it.
- 20:58Speaker 9: No trouble?
- 20:58Speaker 4: He said, yeah, Well, next time and you see him,
- 21:00Speaker 4: you can call him a liar. Eight fifty pm, after
- 21:06Speaker 4: making sure that the place was secure and that there
- 21:08Speaker 4: was no danger of fire from the recent arsenal, attempt
- 21:10Speaker 4: ed and I took the suspect, Oliver Randall outside and
- 21:13Speaker 4: put him in the car where we questioned him. He
- 21:15Speaker 4: made no attempt to disguise the fact that he had
- 21:17Speaker 4: been directed by his regular employer, Edward Daniels, to commit
- 21:21Speaker 4: arson by setting fire to the attic of the apartment house.
- 21:23Speaker 4: In addition, he told us that Daniels had threatened him
- 21:26Speaker 4: with bodily harm if he refused to obey the order
- 21:28Speaker 4: and set fire to the building.
- 21:30Speaker 9: He had this gun, you know, mister Daniels did. He
- 21:32Speaker 9: always had it with him. I was scared of it.
- 21:34Speaker 9: I don't mind telling you.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Huh. He threatened to kill you if you didn't do
- 21:37Speaker 6: what he wanted that.
- 21:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I guess so. You used to get mad all
- 21:40Speaker 9: out of the time, and he had this gun. He
- 21:41Speaker 9: as had the gun and get mad at me and
- 21:43Speaker 9: tell me he was going to shoot me. I'm afraid
- 21:45Speaker 9: of guns.
- 21:46Speaker 4: How about to fire at the other apartment house Ali,
- 21:48Speaker 4: the one over on South Union Avenue.
- 21:50Speaker 9: That was a big fire.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Did you start that one?
- 21:52Speaker 9: Daniels told me there was nobody living there. He said
- 21:54Speaker 9: nobody'd get hurt. Nobody did get hurt.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Did they Do you start the fire?
- 21:58Speaker 9: Yeah? I guess so, I guess I did.
- 22:00Speaker 6: Mister Daniels tell you to do it?
- 22:01Speaker 9: He said it was his building, he owned it, He
- 22:03Speaker 9: could do anything whether he wanted to. I didn't want
- 22:05Speaker 9: to do it. He told me i'd have to. He
- 22:07Speaker 9: said he'd hurt me with that gun, and he said
- 22:09Speaker 9: he'd fire me too. I didn't want to lose my job.
- 22:11Speaker 4: You knew you were doing wrong, didn't Jolly?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Well?
- 22:14Speaker 9: I guess I did, yee? What could I do?
- 22:16Speaker 2: Though?
- 22:16Speaker 9: I didn't want to lose my job? Good jobs aren't
- 22:18Speaker 9: too easy to get nowadays. You know that.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Where's mister Daniels? Now?
- 22:21Speaker 9: You know you're not going to tell him what I
- 22:23Speaker 9: told you? Are? He said, not to say anything about it.
- 22:25Speaker 9: He said, nobody believe me anyway. Nobody said he'd tell
- 22:29Speaker 9: everybody I was a liar, said they'd believe him before
- 22:31Speaker 9: they'd believe me.
- 22:32Speaker 6: Where's Daniels?
- 22:33Speaker 4: Now?
- 22:33Speaker 9: If I tell you, you won't let him hurt me,
- 22:35Speaker 9: will you?
- 22:36Speaker 6: No, we won't let him hurt you. You're gonna have
- 22:37Speaker 6: to help us out, though.
- 22:38Speaker 9: What do you want me to do?
- 22:40Speaker 4: Like to find out where Daniels is? First?
- 22:41Speaker 9: He's in a movie over on Pico by his house.
- 22:44Speaker 9: He's waiting for me.
- 22:45Speaker 4: You mean he's waiting for you in the show?
- 22:47Speaker 9: See in the center section ten rows from the back.
- 22:49Speaker 9: He's waiting for me.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Now, well, how's it you're supposed to meet him there?
- 22:52Speaker 9: No, he said, if anybody wanted to know where we
- 22:54Speaker 9: were tonight, this is proof we didn't start the fire.
- 22:57Speaker 4: We were at the show.
- 22:58Speaker 9: I was supposed to start the fire and then go
- 23:00Speaker 9: to the show and meet him ten rows from the
- 23:01Speaker 9: back of the center section.
- 23:02Speaker 4: You want to show us where this movie is, Alie.
- 23:04Speaker 9: Yeah, okay, mister Daniels won't tell you anything. No, he's
- 23:07Speaker 9: going to be mad. He won't tell you anything.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Well, that's where we need your help.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Ally, what do you mean, We'll let him tell you.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Nine four pm, ED and I, along with a suspect,
- 23:18Speaker 4: Oliver Randall, drove to the movie house on West Pico.
- 23:21Speaker 4: On the way, we explained to Randal what he was
- 23:23Speaker 4: supposed to do. Nine fifty five pm, we parked our
- 23:26Speaker 4: car half a block from the movie house, bought three tickets,
- 23:29Speaker 4: and went inside. The feature picture was still on. There
- 23:32Speaker 4: wasn't much of a crowd. We sent Randal down the
- 23:34Speaker 4: aisle ahead of us and watched him move into the
- 23:36Speaker 4: tenth row and sit down next to somebody. Ed and
- 23:38Speaker 4: I followed him down and found seats in the road
- 23:40Speaker 4: directly behind him. We recognized the man sitting next to
- 23:43Speaker 4: Randall as Edward Daniels.
- 23:47Speaker 9: Hello, mister Daniels, I did it just the way you
- 23:49Speaker 9: told me up in the attic. It was okay.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Nobody saw you didn't have any trouble, doll.
- 23:53Speaker 9: No, it was okay. I don't feel so good about it, though,
- 23:56Speaker 9: What do you mean what are you talking about?
- 23:58Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 23:58Speaker 9: Maybe somebody might find out. Don't you think we'd get
- 24:01Speaker 9: in trouble if they've found out?
- 24:02Speaker 8: We just keep your mouth shut out, attended there, nobody's
- 24:04Speaker 8: going to.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Find out, all right, Daniels, you mind coming outside? We'd
- 24:06Speaker 4: like to talk to you.
- 24:07Speaker 8: What are you doing here?
- 24:08Speaker 6: Come on, we'll talk that time.
- 24:13Speaker 8: What's this all about?
- 24:14Speaker 4: We'll let you tell us.
- 24:19Speaker 6: All right?
- 24:19Speaker 8: What do you want? You' arresting me?
- 24:20Speaker 4: That's right, mister.
- 24:22Speaker 8: Why what's it supposed to be this time?
- 24:23Speaker 6: Thank?
- 24:23Speaker 2: You know?
- 24:24Speaker 6: Arsenal conspiracy? Cotton Randall here? Call him right in the act.
- 24:26Speaker 6: He told us the whole story?
- 24:28Speaker 9: What Holly?
- 24:29Speaker 8: What story?
- 24:29Speaker 4: What is this?
- 24:30Speaker 9: I told you I didn't want to do it, mister Daniels,
- 24:32Speaker 9: I told you we'd get in trouble.
- 24:33Speaker 8: Fool, stupid fool. Should have known better.
- 24:36Speaker 6: Yeah, you should have just two questions for you, Daniels.
- 24:39Speaker 6: Why'd you burn down your own property? Why'd you redecorate
- 24:41Speaker 6: the buildings? First?
- 24:43Speaker 8: I never forgot it, told him, when had happened. I
- 24:45Speaker 8: wouldn't forget it as long as I lived.
- 24:46Speaker 4: What do you mean forget what?
- 24:47Speaker 8: Twenty four years ago? I was just starting out a
- 24:50Speaker 8: small store back in Ohio burned down, real fire. Was
- 24:54Speaker 8: the insurance company. They wouldn't believe me. Had to sue
- 24:57Speaker 8: lost the whole thing, had to start all over again.
- 25:00Speaker 8: I told him I'll never forget it. Told him I'd
- 25:01Speaker 8: make him pay.
- 25:02Speaker 6: You've been nursing this grudge for twenty four years.
- 25:04Speaker 8: Why not? Why shouldn't I lost everything everything I had?
- 25:07Speaker 4: Why do you redecorate the apartment house if you planned
- 25:09Speaker 4: to burn him down?
- 25:10Speaker 8: Simple? Gave me a good excuse. Can have all those
- 25:12Speaker 8: things stored in the buildings? Paint kerosene? Besides, who think
- 25:16Speaker 8: I'd burned down the building right after I got done?
- 25:18Speaker 8: Redecorating on a bad idea? Worked pretty good, didn't it.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you're going to jail. You figured.
- 25:31Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 25:34Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 25:36Speaker 3: On August eighteenth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 25:39Speaker 3: eighty six, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 25:42Speaker 3: In a moment, the results of that trial.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Now here is our star Jack Webb.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Thank you, George Gentleman. Friends. Comparisons are often very helpful
- 25:50Speaker 4: in modern police work. Now, for instance, the suspect may
- 25:53Speaker 4: be identified by comparing his mo or method of operation
- 25:57Speaker 4: with the known facts of a case.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Edward John Daniels was tried and convicted of two counts
- 26:10Speaker 3: of conspiracy and one count of arson, and received the
- 26:13Speaker 3: sentence as prescribed by law. Conspiracy is punishable by imprisonment
- 26:17Speaker 3: in the state penitentiary for not more than two years.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Arson is punishable by a prison term of not less
- 26:23Speaker 3: than one or more than five years. Daniels accomplice, Oliver Randall,
- 26:27Speaker 3: was examined by three psychiatrists appointed by the court and
- 26:30Speaker 3: was found to be mentally incompetent. He was placed in
- 26:33Speaker 3: a state hospital for the mentally deficient. The charge of
- 26:36Speaker 3: assault with a deadly weapon against Edward Daniels was dismissed.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Ha ha, you have just heard Dragnet a series of
- 26:51Speaker 3: authentic cases from official files. Technical advice comes from the
- 26:55Speaker 3: Office of Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles
- 26:57Speaker 3: Police Department Technical Advisor, Captain Jack Donahoe, Sergeant Marty Winn,
- 27:02Speaker 3: Sergeant Vans Brecher heard tonight We're Barney Phillips and Vic Perrin.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Script by Jim Mosey, music by Walter Schumann, Hell Gibney speaking.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Well, It's Counterspy on NBC.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Welcome Back. Dragnett has followed Broadways My Beat in our
- 27:43Speaker 1: line up for nearly a year, ever since we went
- 27:48Speaker 1: from six shows a week to five, and I have
- 27:52Speaker 1: to say, this is the first time that the Broadways
- 27:56Speaker 1: My Beat episode has a more believable motive. It kind
- 28:03Speaker 1: of shows that truth is stranger than fiction. Now, if
- 28:07Speaker 1: you did a Broadways My Bat or a Johnny Dollar
- 28:12Speaker 1: story where the criminal began setting fires insurance payouts as
- 28:20Speaker 1: an act of revenge against the insurance industry, yeah, I
- 28:25Speaker 1: mean it's not even against the company, because you know,
- 28:29Speaker 1: if we've been listening to Johnny doll Er, yeah, we
- 28:32Speaker 1: do evidentely have the idea that it's very unlikely that
- 28:37Speaker 1: the same company is going to be ensuring property in
- 28:42Speaker 1: Ohio as will be insuring property in California. So he's
- 28:47Speaker 1: essentially doing this to get back at the insurance industry.
- 28:51Speaker 1: And he's right that the fact that he had the
- 28:55Speaker 1: places repainted and paid for all that work help to
- 29:00Speaker 1: cover the fire in terms of the insurance company being like,
- 29:04Speaker 1: why would he do this? But he's also ensuring that
- 29:08Speaker 1: he's getting the least profitable insurance fraud, because part of
- 29:15Speaker 1: the fraud is pain to have the property repainted and
- 29:21Speaker 1: totally done off. And the guy had the goal to
- 29:26Speaker 1: be like, boy, wasn't this a clever plan? Officers, It's
- 29:31Speaker 1: not clever when the reason that the police in the
- 29:36Speaker 1: insurance company can't catch you is they can't imagine you
- 29:41Speaker 1: being that stupid, petty and spiteful. Again, such a point
- 29:47Speaker 1: would be ridiculous on Broadways, My Bait and other programs,
- 29:53Speaker 1: but here, apparently he is close enough to cheot a life.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And this was from the one suspect that they did
- 30:01Speaker 1: find mentally competent to stand trial. Listener comments and feedback,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and we start on YouTube with some comments on the
- 30:09Speaker 1: bake producer Jeffrey Wrights, love your wrap up of the
- 30:13Speaker 1: day's show. Yeah, thank goodness, such crime against kids is
- 30:17Speaker 1: punished more stiffly now we truckers have organizations such as
- 30:21Speaker 1: TAT to identify and report human trafficking and juvenile exploitation.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Thanks Adam, and thanks so much. I appreciate the comment.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Jeffrey and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that
- 30:35Speaker 1: despite the fact of courts not really having strict enforcement
- 30:41Speaker 1: at the time, Dragnet was doing Yelman's work in explaining
- 30:47Speaker 1: how these type of schemes took advantage of young women.
- 30:52Speaker 1: And this would even continue into the nineteen sixties series,
- 30:55Speaker 1: and doubtless what Dragnet did lay to the found foundation
- 31:00Speaker 1: for changes in the law regarding these offenses. On the
- 31:05Speaker 1: same episode Immortal Sergeant Rights, thank you Adam for bringing
- 31:09Speaker 1: us this great episode, and James says, excellent episode. Thanks well,
- 31:13Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time
- 31:16Speaker 1: to comment over there on YouTube. Well, now it is

- 31:54Speaker 1: another episode of Dragonnet, but join us back here tomorrow
- 31:58Speaker 1: for yours, truly, Johnny dall more aware?
- 32:00Speaker 12: When did he and Baron get out of the clink
- 32:02Speaker 12: about two weeks ago?
- 32:03Speaker 9: I see?
- 32:04Speaker 12: So, what's the proposition Shakli has made?
- 32:06Speaker 10: Your brother, Johnny Adam has spent the past nine years,
- 32:09Speaker 10: ever since he was released, out there building up this
- 32:12Speaker 10: small brokerage office here in the east. Now he and
- 32:15Speaker 10: his wife are finally beginning to reap the fruits of
- 32:17Speaker 10: their labors. Children, two fine upstanding kids, are in college
- 32:20Speaker 10: over in New York State.
- 32:22Speaker 12: So, but if it were ever.
- 32:23Speaker 10: To become known that he once served a term in
- 32:24Speaker 10: prison for participation in a stocks.
- 32:26Speaker 11: Fan, I would kind of pull a rugger right out
- 32:30Speaker 11: from under him.
- 32:30Speaker 4: What.
- 32:30Speaker 10: It would completely ruin him, Johnny, And it would probably
- 32:34Speaker 10: kill his wife. This nine years of struggle of trying
- 32:38Speaker 10: to make up for that one mistake has been just
- 32:40Speaker 10: as hard for her as it has for him. Right now,
- 32:43Speaker 10: she happens to be in the hospital with a serious
- 32:46Speaker 10: heart condition.
- 32:47Speaker 8: I see.
- 32:48Speaker 12: Is she the beneficiary of his insurance?
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yes? She?
- 32:51Speaker 10: And then of course the children.
- 32:53Speaker 12: All right, now, what is this proposition that Shackli has made.
- 32:57Speaker 10: He's demanded seventy five thousand dollars happen.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Wow.
- 33:01Speaker 10: Yes, unless Adam pays it in cash and unmarked bills,
- 33:06Speaker 10: Shockley will release to the papers anonymously.
- 33:09Speaker 4: Of course.
- 33:10Speaker 10: Well, he'll tell them all about Adam's unfortunate part in
- 33:13Speaker 10: that stock selling racket years ago.
- 33:15Speaker 11: Which means that if Adam had a single customer left
- 33:17Speaker 11: instead of a week to be America, then Shockley says,
- 33:21Speaker 11: after he's.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Ruined him, he'll kill him.
- 33:23Speaker 12: He'll want it unless he pays this money. Of course,
- 33:26Speaker 12: he'll make it look like suicide after all.
- 33:28Speaker 10: Under the circumstances, well you know, the ruined businessman.
- 33:32Speaker 12: Yeah, I do know.
- 33:33Speaker 11: Sure, there'll be no reason for anyone to think it
- 33:35Speaker 11: isn't suicide exactly. Wait a minute, that's the insurance angle,
- 33:39Speaker 11: isn't it. Yes, If Adam's death is called suicide, his
- 33:42Speaker 11: policy'll be void.
- 33:43Speaker 12: His wife and kids will get nothing.
- 33:45Speaker 10: And if this man Shockly is as clever as Adam
- 33:47Speaker 10: says he is, he'll do it in such a way
- 33:49Speaker 10: that any court in the land.
- 33:50Speaker 12: Will call it suice sor well, I just can't believe it.
- 33:53Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then. In the meantime,
