- 0:16Speaker 2: There's a new cow on the block. PAMU and the
- 0:19Speaker 2: Livestock Improvement Corporation have created a new breed of cattle.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It can produce both beef and dairy and they're calling
- 0:25Speaker 2: it the Synergizer. Mark Leslie is the PAMU CEO and
- 0:28Speaker 2: with us.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Home Mark, Good afternoon, Heather, how are you very well?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Thank you? That's a cool name. Who came up with that?
- 0:35Speaker 3: It was it was a play on where's in terms
- 0:38Speaker 3: of that's coming from the word synergy, and it was
- 0:40Speaker 3: a synergy about actually bringing together some genetics that include
- 0:45Speaker 3: Angus Hereford, Simontel Charley, So a little bit of a
- 0:49Speaker 3: play there, but also around the collaboration between how does
- 0:51Speaker 3: the dairy sector and the livestock sector collaborate to come
- 0:55Speaker 3: up with these animals that will be used. It'll come
- 0:59Speaker 3: out of the dairy herds and then go into the
- 1:01Speaker 3: livestock herts and become a beef animal to go right through.
- 1:04Speaker 3: So the synergy between the sectors and but no, it's
- 1:06Speaker 3: a pretty cool name that sort of brings to you
- 1:08Speaker 3: the beast of both worlds and different breeds as well
- 1:10Speaker 3: as the dairy and the livestock sector.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Now tell me something, Mark, why do you want a
- 1:13Speaker 2: count to be able to be both dairy and beef
- 1:16Speaker 2: Because you don't want to milk it for years and
- 1:18Speaker 2: then eat it, do you.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah? No, so no it's not going to be milked.
- 1:21Speaker 3: So what this is intending to do is this breed
- 1:24Speaker 3: here will be used the dairy farmers will continue to
- 1:27Speaker 3: use their traditional breeds for their milking animals. These bulls
- 1:32Speaker 3: or these will be used to go over maybe some
- 1:35Speaker 3: of the cows they don't want to keep the replacements
- 1:37Speaker 3: out of, and they'll use these to generate animals that
- 1:40Speaker 3: can then go off into the livestock sector and become
- 1:44Speaker 3: animals for meat and for processing to that side of it. So, no,
- 1:47Speaker 3: they won't be getting books. They'll be coming out of
- 1:50Speaker 3: the dairy sector and going off into that stuff.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Do you reckon there's a market for this?
- 1:55Speaker 4: Yeah? Absolutely.
- 1:55Speaker 3: And the work we've done and this has been part
- 2:00Speaker 3: of our journey in terms of the dairy beef journey
- 2:02Speaker 3: and rearing those extra cars out of our dairy units
- 2:06Speaker 3: to go into the livestock units and these genetics are
- 2:09Speaker 3: a key part of it. And you have seen a
- 2:10Speaker 3: recent Rubbo report rubber Bank report where they talk about
- 2:13Speaker 3: potential upside of dairy beef to New Zealand of one
- 2:16Speaker 3: point two billion. And we've been we've been looking at
- 2:19Speaker 3: this for the last number of years and these will
- 2:22Speaker 3: meet the need of the dairy farmer. They are really
- 2:24Speaker 3: book from their deary perspective, they really nique. They stand
- 2:27Speaker 3: out in terms of their silver color, their low birth
- 2:30Speaker 3: fate and the lights.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But then once they're on a livestock farm, they're growing
- 2:33Speaker 4: out really well. They've got good live weight game and
- 2:36Speaker 4: that's really beating rhythmat quality. So they need to meet
- 2:39Speaker 4: the needs of both sides.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Great, that's fantastic stuff. Mark, Thanks very much, Mark Leslie
- 2:43Speaker 2: palmu CEO.
