Transcript
- 0:40Hello and welcome to. I have some of a blunt penknife
- 0:43the Doctor Who commentary podcast, I am here with my very
- 0:48first return guest. So somebody, I haven't
- 0:51frightened away, and that is my good friend.
- 0:53Jason. Say, hello Jason.
- 0:56Hello, Jason. I am amazed that you invited me
- 0:58back after all the talking over you than I did last time and
- 1:01after all the shade that I threw on Attack of the Cybermen.
- 1:05Oh, I listen to that back. Oh.
- 1:06Did you know, you were kind of the new thing?
- 1:08You know, you'll be surprised when you hear it.
- 1:14We're back for a story that I actually have fun this for.
- 1:17So it should be a whole different vibe.
- 1:19You're getting a new Jason, Their audience.
- 1:20So why don't you tell people what story you've chosen today?
- 1:25I have chosen the war machines by Ian Stewart.
- 1:28Black just for a bit of context. Being an American, I got to
- 1:32watch all the Hartnell episodes and long before they were
- 1:35available on VHS or available for repeating England itself.
- 1:41We got the The Hartnell and troughton and Colin Baker,
- 1:45baggage in late 1985 in the state.
- 1:49So, the first time that I would have seen the war machines,
- 1:52would have been on a Sunday night probably around November
- 1:56or December 1985. And I was bored too.
- 2:03I can understand. I don't like watching black and
- 2:05white TV in 1985. My kids were in 1985 the war.
- 2:12Machines was 19 years old, if you think a 12 year old today
- 2:16and have them watch friends. Friends is older.
- 2:18Now than war machines was a big. Wow, gosh that is astonishing
- 2:23essentially. Yeah.
- 2:24Yeah, like if you if you showed A fifteen-year-old now like 52.
- 2:31Who's 15 years old? Isn't it the new series?
- 2:34Oh, that's right. That's right.
- 2:35That this is the year. The 60th anniversary is coming
- 2:37up. That's a stone God.
- 2:39I feel so old. I was old when it came back so
- 2:42I'm very old now, but as someone who was born in the early 70s,
- 2:47there were had a black and white TV in my room and black and
- 2:51white movies were still, in Fairly heavy rotation.
- 2:54So I understood the language of black and white and it wasn't
- 2:57the monochrome that bored me. Plus, I loved a lot of the
- 3:00earlier Hartnell episodes in the you talking about the chase.
- 3:04Gunfighters. This is all tremendously
- 3:06entertaining stuff and you're spoiled Suburban.
- 3:08Twelve-year-old oh I love that 12 years old, you love to chase.
- 3:13It was a special episode exactly what we sound like.
- 3:23Yeah, it's a lot more deals right in front of me right now,
- 3:29southern accent, the tour guide at the thick.
- 3:31Oh yeah, that's right. Okay, he was putting that one.
- 3:35Right. That's not real.
- 3:38That is pretty darn close. I mean obviously it's
- 3:42over-the-top and comic and he's pausing going a lot.
- 3:45But know, when I was younger and I had a thicker accent, those
- 3:48pretty close to what I sounded like is little spice to be
- 3:51Texan. Martindale was supposed to be
- 3:54from Alabama. How about I said, you all's in a
- 3:56Chase of, man. It's just, that's right.
- 4:00So we get to the war machines, and by the time you get to the
- 4:04episode 3 material, you have all these soldiers, innovating the
- 4:08warehouse and interminable sequence, I fell asleep.
- 4:12And then a few years later, it was on again.
- 4:13And I fell asleep. The second time then I said, of
- 4:16all the Hartnell episodes that are available of the syndication
- 4:19package of the u.s. that was 17 cereals.
- 4:22And I probably had war machines as dead last even below the
- 4:27sensor arrays which has its own charm.
- 4:29Wow, Doctor Who archives and you search for me and war machines.
- 4:36I don't think I would have said very many nice things but in
- 4:402013, which was the last time that I tried to do the
- 4:43pilgrimage, when I watched it in sequence, one episode of night,
- 4:49instead of 40 time, it jumped out of the screen.
- 4:52And I grabbed me and I realized this is groundbreaking.
- 4:55This is special and it's not great, it's not perfect.
- 4:58It is not my number one Hartnell maybe number seven or eight, but
- 5:01it's really, really good when see the context of this time and
- 5:06that's why this is the first Black and White episode
- 5:10featured. Woo!
- 5:11I guess fantastic. Well I'm queued up and ready to
- 5:15go. If you are I am ready.
- 5:18Hey kid. A'ight, so let's Press Play in
- 5:21five. Four, three, two.
- 5:26Let's go. Okay.
- 5:30I love these opening credits where you point the camera at
- 5:35the TV and it gives you the holler out affect the.
- 5:38Yeah, I still feel one of the girls that's where I got it from
- 5:43the fact that, you know, that thank you so much because nobody
- 5:46else has so far to thank you. War match.
- 5:52Eyes, o, war machines. So there's a couple of stories
- 5:57here, isn't it? Where they do these kind of us?
- 5:59Usual credits that will detect planets.
- 6:01Are you watch this? Watch this, you're on top of
- 6:03London. You got the zoom on the film
- 6:06camera. Now, all of a sudden you're
- 6:09going to get this crash, zoom out of the park Doctor Who was
- 6:13not doing shots like this, they when the Tardis lands pigeons
- 6:17fly away. Yeah, it's incredible.
- 6:20And it kind of like sets the tone because the direction
- 6:22throughout is this side, it's just that the Beating Heart of
- 6:27Doctor Who in the 1960s was radically.
- 6:29Young filmmakers and then 20s. And Michael Ferguson was
- 6:32definitely radicals. What else did he do?
- 6:35He was hungry. This is terrific to look at
- 6:37what. Others.
- 6:37Don't a story City direct. He did see some pictures of
- 6:41death. One of my other favorites face
- 6:42of death ambassadors of death. I think he did say the death as
- 6:46well. That was Douglas can't feel.
- 6:50I thought yourself or did The Invasion.
- 6:53He did The Invasion, I'm sorry. Sorry.
- 6:55You're, right. I was thinking Siege of Doom,
- 6:56right? Oh yeah.
- 6:59There's lots of seed stories, you know, and hardened looks
- 7:05terrific in this costume and even better in a minute.
- 7:08When you see him stocking up on film, I don't think there's any
- 7:11sign of him losing his way in this story, a few lines, but I
- 7:17think he's, as confident as he ever was in war machines.
- 7:21Look at his spoon reaction here to get that in a minute where he
- 7:25starts getting Goosebumps the post office tower back when it
- 7:28was new technology. That's a great pan, up my slope.
- 7:34And you have the doctor senses, something alien about that
- 7:37power. He can sense it or sense it.
- 7:41Yeah. There's a Goosebumps.
- 7:48Very expensive. He had a similar sensation when
- 7:50he met who, of the Daleks? Yeah.
- 7:54This story takes place on the same day as you do.
- 8:01You think he mentioned on Twitter than you?
- 8:04It's three stories. I'll take place on the same day.
- 8:06Yeah, I remember now this is a great job.
- 8:10What's the camera turns around He was terrific.
- 8:37I need to ask you about dodo. Oh, I love Jackie Lane.
- 8:44She was getting a raw deal. Yeah, she really was.
- 8:47I mean, I think she was supposed to be playing young, wasn't she?
- 8:50But she's clearly not young cousin, they made her drop her
- 8:56accent and then the new producer came in and he fired her just
- 8:58right after she started. So she never really had a chance
- 9:01to develop an ongoing character. Hopefully, through the story.
- 9:05I mean, has any other companion at such an ignoble end?
- 9:09Melancholy came close to Shaw. Never even got an exit.
- 9:13Oh yeah, every time I suppose, right?
- 9:17Also never got an exit. Oh, I love this fellow
- 9:22Professor, Brett. I like his little bow tie, I
- 9:26can't little question around W on until you know that it's both
- 9:29on. I got a question for you.
- 9:31So the doctor in another lovely child was hiding out in 60s
- 9:36Earth. Yeah but he write his name seems
- 9:40to carry some weight like he's established himself in the 60s.
- 9:46Have you read the novelization? Also by Ian Stewart black not to
- 9:50my knowledge? No I don't think I have.
- 9:53There's an extended sequence. The novelization where he had do
- 9:56to go to a cafe and he writes the Ian Chesterton, who is now a
- 10:00famous scientist and opens all the doors that gets his meeting.
- 10:04Okay? Okay.
- 10:06That's here's our introduction to Polly.
- 10:09Look at that. If you didn't fall in love with
- 10:11Anika Wills, just from that Wrinkle in her nose.
- 10:14I can't help. You know that, I have to tell
- 10:16you something, you may not like I'm not the biggest poly fan.
- 10:24You watch her stories all the way through which I have
- 10:27recently done to my pilgrimage. She is cheerful.
- 10:30She is funny. She has great comic timing
- 10:33again, ringing consistently, but she was always doing a great job
- 10:36week in and week out. It's, you know, it's tough.
- 10:38Like I don't like, it's like the stuff in the Highlanders where
- 10:42she comes across as a bit of a, like a upper-class preak when
- 10:45she's dealing with Kirsty. She's arrogant quite a lot of
- 10:49the time. That's a brief part of the
- 10:54Highlanders, but then she spends the rest of the episode
- 10:56tormenting, that stuck-up British officer and running.
- 10:59So was his name algae Algernon. Now, this is very naive because
- 11:07they show the computer is powerful because it can
- 11:09calculate the square root of a five digit number.
- 11:13That was the height of computing in 1910, it is old computer and
- 11:17it looks like it's extraordinary.
- 11:22Look at the backdrop as well in the set like that really looks
- 11:27like they are at the top of the BT Tower.
- 11:31There must have been a photographing blob of the studio
- 11:34that you're right. It's really good.
- 11:36Really sells it. I feel like I feel like there is
- 11:40definitely a weird that we're at the end of the season here on
- 11:43way, this is the end of Series 3.
- 11:46This was the Blast story of the production block was Smugglers.
- 11:52But this was the last broadcast story to those one.
- 11:55More. Throw a man and a woman.
- 12:01So this is where we establish that vote on is telepathic
- 12:04because it can read those mind until what the word part of
- 12:06stands for. And now, those got under.
- 12:10Yeah, she has a small, but it's Blank Stare.
- 12:15I have a theory about people that I've been a Hypno acting.
- 12:20It always brings out the worst in every actor, you know?
- 12:28But everyone doesn't look differently and I'll point that
- 12:30out a little bit later. I love the feather, they've
- 12:32given William harder. What is technobabble?
- 12:35He must have been reading it going.
- 12:36Oh, I really gotta say all this. That was not his strong suit, he
- 12:43was doing the historical comedy, but yeah.
- 12:46Oh, screw this. She's not in the store is very
- 13:33long issue, Kitty. Episode 1 episode 2 and then she
- 13:38has a forward cameo in the macro Terror or the same actress.
- 13:46Same actress. She's the actress who quit the
- 13:49macro Terror in between episodes, 1 and 4 and add to
- 13:52recast of episode 4. True story.
- 13:55You know, this is where I think Polly works really well die.
- 13:58When it's when it's Polly and Ben, I think they've got such
- 14:01antastic chemistry. She's doing some pretty serious
- 14:07flirting here. Oh yes.
- 14:10I'm gonna have to say something hugely shallow, but then
- 14:12Jackson. That's, that's my pick as the
- 14:14hottest, Dogs. New companion.
- 14:20Together are magical. Is that when you think like
- 14:25before, what do we have do do. And Stephen is very different,
- 14:28isn't it? I'm a huge fan of Stephen, he's
- 14:34done. Which is the cereal right before
- 14:36this. I was expected to go into the
- 14:37war machines, missing him, but with Polly and then I didn't
- 14:40know time I got over here. This is just so not Doctor.
- 14:52Who the time is it feels really fresh?
- 15:02See, then there's any handle himself in a fight.
- 15:04A fight in a nightclub. I think I had to do the fall
- 15:09right on the heart Studio floor. It must have been a nice stuff.
- 15:12Do you see that really again, psychedelic pattern on the
- 15:15floor. Hold on, my potatoes.
- 15:24You want to dress? Do you like better?
- 15:28Paul? He's okay, so he's certainly not
- 15:32dodos. We go hard on location and
- 15:51become far more common, once he left See, that's a good that's
- 16:02great because for a second there.
- 16:05Sorry. Go up.
- 16:09You're having a little bit of mmm.
- 16:17There's Cape Kennedy and the White House link to vote on.
- 16:20This would have been the Lyndon Johnson Administration.
- 16:24It's like the it's like the first internet isn't it?
- 16:27President Johnson hypnotized by vote on.
- 16:32Sorry. It's like, what is like, they're
- 16:33there. It's like the Internet, isn't
- 16:35it? I know the internet was in
- 16:37Concepcion at this point. Yeah, home computers length,
- 16:45there was our bad American accent, the episode, this fella
- 16:49in the bow tie. Isn't he supposed to be David?
- 16:53Bishop wrote a book called who killed Kennedy and I swear that
- 16:57is supposed to be him the main character from that book.
- 17:04That's the proper word or do is give him a venereal disease and
- 17:07then shot in the head, right? Yeah, that's the one.
- 17:19So I got a whole book out of this one.
- 17:21Guy's corny, American accent, that's pretty impressive.
- 17:24Well, David Bishop, he put him in lots of different
- 17:29contemporary stories. So I think he's like one of the
- 17:31reporters in spearhead from space.
- 17:34He's the guy that phone is the Brigadier in the silurians,
- 17:38where he picks up the phone and goes the daily W.
- 17:41Sorry. All right, right?
- 17:43It's quite cleverly. Dumb.
- 17:48I'm just going in and examining the model.
- 17:51He's already figured out that something bad is going on.
- 17:53So he's essentially like it's a template for Pertwee, isn't it?
- 17:58He's essentially like the Scientific Advisor in this
- 18:00story. And there's even a cabinet
- 18:03minister introduced later on. Yes, very perfectly move.
- 18:09Now, later on, in this story, one thing that really struck me
- 18:13was that Russell T Davies thing of having the the horror told
- 18:18through a news report I was like okay so the war machines got
- 18:23there first we can't give Rusty Davis credit for that.
- 18:28No, there's quite a bit of that and a silly before, actually.
- 18:35The like the whole hypnosis thing that was very mid-60s.
- 18:40Wasn't that if you look at all those sort of spy shows, at the
- 18:43time, they were all doing that kind of Sleeper Agent.
- 18:46Hypnosis But here, of course, has the computer doing it rather
- 18:54than a Sinister foreign power. It's a bit of a Twist on the
- 18:57concept. Do they ever give a reason as to
- 19:00why wotan wants to take over humanity and we just inefficient
- 19:06I think the novelization goes to it a little more.
- 19:10What is this bizarre music playing?
- 19:14The DVD subtitles actually tell you what the track is, but I
- 19:17like these swirling Twilight Zone, A special effect that are
- 19:21superimposed over his head and I kind of Hitler music dude.
- 19:30That it's a ghost. And now he's gone.
- 19:49So okay, I have a question for you, at the end of this episode,
- 19:55votan says Doctor Who is required.
- 20:00So do the rise of. But does that mean his name is
- 20:13Doctor Who Subtitles over this episode.
- 20:20The production notes, I'm pretty sure they did it.
- 20:22That was his name because it turns up starting in the
- 20:25gunfighters he turns up again and again all the way through
- 20:29the Highlanders where he introduces himself as Doctor Who
- 20:32in German. Oh dr.
- 20:34Vaughn were is it? Yeah, right of any size of self,
- 20:38dr. W with underwater medicine.
- 20:42Okay, we're going to pause the tape.
- 20:45Okay. Tell me when I'm ready.
- 20:49Any second now. Not quite this moment.
- 20:54But coming up a whole little bit.
- 20:58Now I'm post he's got his hot arm outstretched.
- 21:03This has to be one of the greatest individual seeing
- 21:08compositions in Doctor Who, which is why I am hijacking,
- 21:14your fine podcast, stop the tape.
- 21:17Okay, so if you are listening to this in the car, Or while you're
- 21:22running, if you're not in front of the TV, this is about 15
- 21:27minutes and 30 seconds in the way that Ferguson stages.
- 21:31This shot in the foreground, you have the professor and Krypton.
- 21:38And what's his name? Sir.
- 21:40Charles in the background, dominating the center of the
- 21:44scene is William Hartnell and he's looking at them and he
- 21:48knows exactly what is going on. You can just tell This one
- 21:52composition him standing there in the middle of the scene.
- 21:54Yeah it is it is incredible. In fact this sort of skill in
- 22:00composing a scene would have been very useful in the 80s
- 22:05where they tended to have people just standing in a line in Long
- 22:10Shot, various was very fourth wall acting, but this is
- 22:15phenomenal. Yeah, it's back is to the
- 22:17camera. They are rehearsing in a church
- 22:20Hall without set. For most of the week.
- 22:23So how Ferguson was able to line this up?
- 22:25They only had maybe one day on the actual sense.
- 22:29I mean, this is probably one of my favorite individual screen
- 22:33grabs of the Hartnell here. I have a lot of the whole show.
- 22:35Just this one still photo. You can get the entire plot just
- 22:39from the one still photo. Jason even pulls episodes at any
- 22:44point you want if you are going to make awesome observations
- 22:47like that, maybe when I come back with you on the golf
- 22:50course. I'll pause it several times.
- 22:52Oh Jesus. Okay.
- 23:085 4, 3, 2. Let's go.
- 23:15And her nose is staring at the camera and you knows what's
- 23:17going on. And no one else is paying
- 23:19attention, except for that one guy in the background with a
- 23:22camera. I I just, I just can't see like,
- 23:28like Harborview seen stuff like this Fierce intelligence in this
- 23:31one. It is about as far from, you
- 23:34know, the kind of daughtery doctor being written out of
- 23:38repute. As you can get.
- 23:41I think the two things that everybody knows about heart
- 23:46knows that he was a terrible racist and that he couldn't
- 23:48remember his lines, but I don't think either one of those things
- 23:51is actually true. So he is best remembered for is
- 23:55a completely. A erroneous caricature.
- 23:57I mean, if there is an element of truth, I think that probably
- 23:59exaggerated sit and to be honest like you, listen to interviews.
- 24:03It's people like Annika Wills, the kind of stress those points.
- 24:11And most of the bad stories about him, come from, Donald
- 24:15Tosh would be the script editor, who was one of the first people
- 24:17to try and get heart all the shows.
- 24:20And then of course when Anakin met him, he was at the end of
- 24:22his time on the series. You just been fired.
- 24:24He was probably not in a very good mood.
- 24:26I think he was, I think he officially announced his
- 24:29resignation while they were filming The Story.
- 24:32So for have, this is the moment that he's being forced out of
- 24:34his show. But if you listen to him cheese,
- 24:37with William Russell with Maureen O'Brien, you know, they
- 24:40say, He get into a temper and things like that, but then he
- 24:43was really Charming. He really cared for them.
- 24:45He was really generous. Hey Mark Gatiss docudrama, the
- 24:52adventure in space and time really gets into it.
- 24:54You see him he's got this dream job, be surrounded by friends
- 24:57and then all his friends go away and his dream job turns to dust
- 25:01and it puts him in a terrible mood but then we can all relate
- 25:05to that any one of us who's had a great job as just turned bad
- 25:07and hurry. Yeah.
- 25:10So another major is doing his hypnotise, dang thing.
- 25:13That's where I was. So he's now in funding.
- 25:14The Inferno Club is Ali to hypnotize dodo.
- 25:19All right, that's right. I love data which is like, yes,
- 25:23yes, I have my instructions. If she's what And all these kids
- 25:30dancing in the background, they don't realize there's an
- 25:34invasion of London under way. It is it is really kind of going
- 25:39for that swing. He's kind of swinging, 60s,
- 25:41hipness, though, isn't it? But this was, this was me in
- 25:441966. It's just literally The Swinging
- 25:46sixties. They're filming.
- 25:47This hasn't happened. This is more of a documentary
- 25:49than Austin Powers. Type ironic retrospective but
- 25:53you do most say the dogs who came to the party little bit
- 25:56late. Wouldn't you?
- 25:57But they could have been doing that in 63 They wanted to do an
- 26:04exploration show so they never envisioned wanted being home
- 26:07base so far for the first few minutes of the first episode
- 26:11they would have went back to the setting.
- 26:13It's funny how things turn out come home really And that's
- 26:17basically where we ended up, wasn't it?
- 26:20Yeah, but the 70s was the episode.
- 26:23So it attention to what Krypton is doing.
- 26:26Here it is a small part and it's a thankless part.
- 26:29But for this one seen this guy who looks really striking with
- 26:34the red beard, he's going to give the performance of his
- 26:36life. Any minute now.
- 26:37Do you remember all the calls him?
- 26:39My stop little man krimpet. Mmm, Everywhere.
- 26:47Hey, Oh, he, oh, are you write his resistance to hypnosis
- 26:55acting is incredible Professor breast as mankind has reached a
- 27:00standstill. So that's your explanation for
- 27:02thank you. Thank you, thank you very much.

- 27:10I do not having any other love the way as he's being taken
- 27:15over. Like the, he goes right up to
- 27:16the camera. Doesn't he's like facing the
- 27:18camera, right? It's got a nice stock has two
- 27:26gauges. Well, and he's going to lose.
- 27:29Once he goes under what's he goes.
- 27:30Under healing comes bowties. Most dedicated acolyte just
- 27:34another machine. Another ultimate on This is kind
- 27:37of creepy, they got the major, blocking the door.
- 27:41It's not going to be allowed to leave.
- 27:48This is very Invasion of the Body Snatchers to everyone is
- 27:52falling prey to the last person. Who's seen them, eventually they
- 27:56come and get you too. He's actually giving a really
- 28:05good performance a and this affects physically being dragged
- 28:08away from the phone, he's doing resistance act all is your
- 28:12worldly special effect together. It's not right into the
- 28:16characters, very common in 62 talk right into the camera.
- 28:20I swear, this is the same music. They play over.
- 28:23The moon scenes in the moon base.
- 28:28Look at this, you starting rate to us yet.
- 28:34You got to be a very bad thing. Very well, this isn't going out
- 28:39now because you know, a lot the the anti woke Brigade would be
- 28:42all over this talking Straight Out camera saying, there's
- 28:45nothing more important than human life.

- 29:40starts with Stephen, Vicki that there's Katerina them, Sarah
- 29:47Kingdom, there's no photo. And then there's been a fine.
- 29:50So you have seven companions are like seven cereals.
- 29:54So the show is just completely losing its mind at this point,
- 29:57but these can come in and Instability.
- 29:59And they last together from several cereals, which was
- 30:03unprecedented. I mean, could you imagine that
- 30:05the camera? Can you imagine that swapping of
- 30:07companions taking place like, whilst hard?
- 30:09I was going you needed that continuity.
- 30:12Didn't you that point? They give him well Delia shortly
- 30:16thereafter, the baking of continuity.
- 30:18They are, they are relatable, but their Joy, because for every
- 30:21cereal before this one was a different set of companions.
- 30:25Oh my, we're about to lose dodo. It's a it's a decent Cliffhanger
- 30:31this though it is. It is I mean Michael Ferguson
- 30:36knows how to shoot a crazy computer.
- 30:43This voice is incredible. It is really inspired and
- 30:48proton. Has a face with the eyes and the
- 30:50little round dial for his nose and a mouth.
- 30:53He says it's the lowest posed to be how it sees You know, I have
