- 0:36SPEAKER_01: It's time for another episode of Bards and Barrels.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: How are we doing tonight, fellas?
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: We're here.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: We're ready.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: We're here.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: We're ready.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: I don't have a good cheer for that.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know where I was going with that.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna stop.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: But you know what it is tonight?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: It is a mailbag night, which I know is everybody's favorite.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: I'm always so terrified about this.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: As you should be, my friend.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: This is like the epitome of DD.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: It's like being on this side of the screen and just waiting for you guys to roll the dice and see what happens.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: This is true.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: There's like Ross gets all the power in these ideas.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Brent and I are just along for the ride.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: We go in blind.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: And you know, the great thing is neither one of you have been like, let me run a mailbag.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: So I just you know, it's fine.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: It's all good.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Uh so let's let's without you know, without further ado, let's jump right into this.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Uh we'll start with a simpler question, maybe.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: I hate how you said that.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: There was a question mark there.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Everything is a matter of perspective, Phil.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Everything is a matter of perspective.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Uh so question number one for the evening.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, would you award XP for scaring a foe away?
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I concur.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: I hate XP.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: You lost me at that point.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Like, I I'm much more in the camp of milestone-based leveling up.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: XP just gets so mundane.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I actually also agree with Brett.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I don't do XP tracking.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: However, I think that being true to the rule uh or true to the word of the rule, technically, yeah, you still succeeded in that encounter, even if it didn't end in combat.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: So technically you defeated the foe, even if you didn't fight.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: In order to stay balanced with the the goal of using XP, you need to award XP for non-combat encounters.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And I think I I'm unsure if this question is coming from a player character or a DM.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: But point being, the DM made a decision to run this NPC away.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: So there had to be a reason that it was getting its butt kicked or it was in a non-advantageous situation that they decided they needed to leave the encounter, probably as a result of whatever was going on.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I also think it's important that you reward wise decision making.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Or good role-playing.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Like either one of those things are still worth if you're doing XP-based play, like it's still worth awarding XP to encourage that continued behavior.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: And to discourage min-maxing of like trying to kill everything.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, sure.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Murder hobos.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I think we wrap that one up with a seat.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Good start, everybody.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: That was simpler.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Ross.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: First drive was a touchdown.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Woo! Uh, question number two.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: This one's gonna deal a little bit more with cover, which uh sometimes we don't utilize as we should.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Fill in air frantically pulling up our notes.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Uh a rogue hides behind a pillarslash door or wall on the next the next turn to fire at an enemy.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: He doesn't have line of sight around a corner.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Does leaning out break stealth in combat?
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Is it movement?
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Question mark.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I would argue that it's not.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: That you can lean out.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I would say if you lead out and take a shot, um most likely I would probably allow the monsters or the NPCs or whatever you were combating an opportunity to maybe try to find you.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Um or I mean it depends.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: If you're like really stealth hidden type deal, I would give them the opportunity to find you.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: If you're kind of ducking out and going back behind the wall, technically you you have movement to use for that if you wanted to.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: So even if I was gonna tell you you had to use half your movement to do so, you still could.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, even if it even if you go simple and just be like five feet so you're out, take step one block over, step one block back.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: That that makes it really simple.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Then maybe you get into the issue of did they see you?
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Perception checks, stealth checks, along those lines.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: That's kind of the the along the line that I was thinking was that you know, if you've if you force them to move out so they can split their movement, they move out, they take their shot, they move back, so they've never left covered, they were in cover at the beginning of their turn, they were in cover at the end of their turn, right?
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: To me, I agree with Brett that a perception check makes sense.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: So they can't see you anymore when it's their turn, but then you could roll to see if they know you're there.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: But your turns are happening concurrently.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: So as in terms of a round.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: And what if somebody is holding a reaction for when you peek out?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, so uh funny, we're gonna have a question on reactions later.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: See, this is where I like to have all these things in my little Google Dog here.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Who gave Ross the bag?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Bag of holding.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, but like with a reaction, so they step out.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: You know, if you have a reaction that allows you to like, let's say, take a bonus attack or something, so the moment they step out, you can see them, they are no longer under the cover.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: That reaction would allow you to hit them.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: You have dropped your cover at that point.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Messy, very messy.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: And I think this is this is one of those things where it's like it's the discretion of the DM.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: They're gonna play it in the moment how they feel it should be done.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: And you know, one thing to keep in mind here is to not get bogged down in rules too much unnecessarily.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Try and keep combat flowing first and foremost.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: You don't want to just completely kill the vibe that you guys have going at the table for one minuscule little kind of controversial or like disgust rule.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: I agree with that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think so too.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: That's kind of what I come back to.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Even if I was going to treat it like the five-foot movement out, five foot movement back, if the character or the player said, I want to peek my head out around the corner, I would just allow that to flow in combat, but maybe to the NPCs or whatever, give them the opportunity to spot them.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Like they stepped out and stepped back.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I would just play.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: And it's like we haven't even gotten into like technically, if they're just peeking around the corner, if they don't attack, is it really movement to peek around the cover that you have?
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: You're not leaving the five feet that you're probably within to do that.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: So I think it it it just depends on the situation.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: And we're nitpicking this in a way where we can focus on this particular thing in combat.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: You're probably like at your table, you're not gonna spend time here going, well, did you peek out for more than like three seconds?
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Did people notice you?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Was it your whole head or just your right eyeball?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: So so it's like to Brett's point, don't get bogged out on that.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Just keep it flowing, it's gonna be fine.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Next question.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, I have two paladins in my party that are sixth level, and they have an aura of protection, which gives a bonus to saving throws to friendly creatures within 10 feet.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: If they overlap, is the bonus stackable?
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Leave it to Ross to add in a paladin question.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, these multiples.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Oh god, he's just trying, you are just trying to uh level up your character when we come back in and you play a paladin again.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: So also a shameless pug that our next class review is going to be a paladin.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: So you know, I'm just prepping you guys and everybody for that one coming up.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I was just like deciding how terrible a party with two paladins sounds, but it's like hurts.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: I, you know, truthfully, I don't know the rules answer on this one, but as a DM, I would probably say no.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I think you are correct.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if that's the right call or not.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: This seems like something that they would balance in in the way that you wouldn't stack.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Like it's gotta be redundant at that point.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: So it in my mind it's gonna be highly unlikely you have two paladins of the same oath in a party.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: That's just gonna be kind of bland.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: So if they're of different oaths, they're gonna have different auras anyway.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: So if one has is the oath of devotion and has the aura of protection, which gives the plus four to saving throws, and then you have another paladin who is not of the same oath but has different auras that do different benefits, those stack in the sense of you get the benefits of both the auras.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: If they're the same oath and the same benefit, you're not gonna get a plus eight to your saving throws.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: That is not balanced and just doesn't work.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: But what if it comes from different gods?
- 9:13unknown: Okay.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Get out of here.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Get out of here.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: All right, paladin boy, where are you going?
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: So let's preface this by saying it it does not stack unless you're doing table rules, home rule, homebrew rules here, right?
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Now you could have a house rule that if you have a paladin of different gods that they grant.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I would not give them both a plus four though in that instance.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Because the the book in the book, in the paladin section, the R of Protection gives you a plus four to Saving Troes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: It would have to be one hell of a divine intervention to double it.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: And maybe that's how you balance it.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Is it's if you have two paladins, they're just not worth as much.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: So you could stack them, or in specific in instances, maybe you would roll, and if it's an 18 or higher, you do get the benefit of the double plus four.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Sounds like this party really needs a bard, so we can throw bardic inspiration on top of that as well.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Oh god, yes.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: How how can you go?
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: So here's the other thing.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Or or just do two D4.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Not just a straightforward.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: So then it's like an average, then yeah, you could totally do that.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: That's a good way to do it.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: That is a good way.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Um so the other thing that we're kind of leaving out there is you have to be within 10 feet of both those paladin uh both those paladins in order for that to work at this level.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Where this becomes really messy is when they get into levels 17, 18, 19, 20, where that aura is 30 feet.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, sure.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Because then you're constantly overlapping.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: At 10 feet, it's a lot harder to do because ideally you're flanking and getting around enemies and things like that.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: So this is like in 300 where they had like the shield, they're like shield, and then like little turtle ships.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what it is.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: That's hard to keep track of, too.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like just thinking back to a Vernus, I think your paladin had an aura, and then there's another NPC that also had an aura.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And I only had to keep track of the NPC, you were keeping track of yours, but when those would overlap, that was already hard enough to keep track of.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So I'm just trying to think of like imagining paladins constantly.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like, oh, am I in one?
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Am I in two?
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: I just think that'd be a lot to manage.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: But we were lucky because we were playing it on a VTT.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: True.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: We could actually play on a real table.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, as long as you had if you if you had like minis, it wouldn't be too bad because you can at least visualize.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but then you've got to remember that, right?
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: And your party has to remember that they're in or out.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: Depending on where they're at.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: But like theater of the mind would be awful.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Because it's like it's hard to visualize, period, much less where I am in relation to the city.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Constantly, right, yeah.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like when I've done theater of the mind stuff, I've moved way more than my 30 feet.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Always.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: That's how it goes.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, so so we'll leave that one there.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Um next question.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: This is about mending.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: A sleeve was torn off an intricate robe.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: The mending spell would be able to fix that.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Now let's say a party is tracking a bad guy and they get a hold of his journal that has a missing page in it.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Would mending be able to fix the book?
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Uh I would say is the page the pages missing?
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: No.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: If you had the page, yes, you could mend it back into the book.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: It could not recreate something that is missing, would be how I would do that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: I think the thing to remember here is mending is a cantrip.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: So it's like level zero of a spell.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: You're not gonna make things up out of thin air at level zero.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: I was reminded of uh Harry Potter when I read this question of Gomp's elemental law of transfiguration or whatever it is.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Here deep dive there, right?
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: But you can't, at least in the Harry Potter world, you can't like create things out of nothing.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what you're trying to do here.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: If you're trying to, if you have the page and you're fixing the book, mending does the trick.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: If you're just trying to figure out what was ripped out, at best, I would say it creates a page, but there's not gonna be anything on it.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: At worst, it doesn't do a damn thing.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: That would work potentially.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Just the way it reads, right?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: The spell repairs a single break or tear in an object you touch.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: So it doesn't talk about like replacing something.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: It would be truthfully like, sure, if the page was torn out and you wanted to fix it because you're gonna gift the book to someone, sure.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: But I like I like leaving a little loophole in there because like I can imagine a situation where like the party's really excited that they think they're gonna figure something out, and then you allow it to create something only to find out that it didn't do anything to help them.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: So I like that idea, but I agree with both of you guys.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna give them what they want, it's not gonna tell them the secret that was torn out.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I would love that instead it's like a bunch of like off-handed jokes instead, like towards them.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Like a mocking type of page.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: No, I'm I'm picturing it just like a bunch of coupons for the local, the local fair, like, oh this just randomly appeared.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: The nearest paper in in around was transported on into the book.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: That would be perfect, yes.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Redeem at the prancing pixie for one stein of ale.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: It's it's geotag, so if you're within a certain range of the city, it pops up with certain coupons, just like Amazon.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, need help for curse of Strahd.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: One of my players wants to play a vampire.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Since Strahd is looking for someone to replace him, spoiler alert.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I know he'll never think anyone is worthy enough, but what would he think of another vampire?
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And now, what would the people of Barovia or even how would Irina react to him?
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: I don't know if we're far enough into this campaign.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Ross, did you put in your own question?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: I did I did not, no.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: That would be funny though if I did.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Um This one's interesting because I think it kind of goes it it would be like in Descent into a Vernus, playing a tiefling, right?
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: It would be along those same lines, like if you were of infernal descent or a demon in the nine hells.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So it's like, what if you're a vampire in Strahd's Domain in Ravenloft or something like that, right?
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: I think it's doable.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure it's practical for the story.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: And this would be something like I would head off probably in a session zero.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Um, because you you could really get into the weeds here because it's like if you're a vampire, are you the prime vampire or are you vampire spawn?
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: If you're vampire spawn, you really can't take the place of something because you're beholden to somebody else, right?
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: I I'm thinking, like, isn't that character almost just a servant of Strahd anyway?
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: They're there that's entirely in charge.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: So I I don't know.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: I would lean towards probably not allowing it, but I'm not familiar enough with the story.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: You're I think you need to work with your DM to balance it and set some fairly firm guidelines on if you're gonna do this, what you can and can't do picture.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: And and I would say that in terms of how this person reacts with other characters in the book, because obviously the people of of Barovia are very weary of vampires, especially Arena, because Strahd has come after her time and time again.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Um that look at look at uh like Astereon from Baldur's Gate 3.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: He is a vampire, and he is one of the good guys in the story, right?
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: So it's like you can be that way.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: It you just have to think out how you're gonna play this character a little bit.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you have a reasonable plan for this, I'd probably be okay with it, but you and me, player DM talk, would have to outline that ahead of time.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, especially if it plays into the story of like Strahd wanting to replace himself, that has significant impact to potentially how the DM would structure the campaign.
- 17:01unknown: Sure.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: So I definitely have to have a conversation about that.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Anything else, Brett?
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: No, I I mean yeah, I don't know.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: This is a good question because it's like you could really work with your DM to lean into it and just go with it and like go something really crazy, but at that point, you're almost being a like a sub-DM.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Like sure.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Uh so maybe maybe not.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I think I'm almost torn in a way because like the the easygoing laid back DM side of me is like, yeah, do whatever you want, we can make it happen.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: But then the other part of me is like I look at the story and I'm like, it just doesn't fit quite right in this one.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: Especially with a pre-written module.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: If this was a homebrew, maybe you could get something out of it, but and I also think it would be one thing, like if you come to a session zero and want to play a vampire going into the story where then we could either hash out or not do it at all, or have we been doing other campaigns leading into this one and you've already been a vampire too?
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: True.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Then then you have backstory built and we could work our way around that too.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: So I think I think there's uh several different paths you could take with that.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Uh next question.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: G'day all.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: I don't know if this one's coming from Australia or what.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I'm running a campaign into hell.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Any tips on travel between and out of hell would be much appreciated.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: I read this as how do you get in, how do you get in and out, how do you get out if you want out?
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Like asking all the questions.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Well, getting in is easy.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: You just find a high-powered wizard that can plane shift you.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you're a high enough player, you could have the plane shift spell already and you can get yourself there.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: You could attempt to summon um some sort of uh high-powered devil or demon.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Hashtag bad idea.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, maybe, but we are just throwing stuff at the board and seeing that it sticks.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, we are not shooting down ideas here.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Getting out, I feel like it's a little more challenging, potentially.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And I think if you're a player that has the plane shift spell, you can move around as you choose to within the limits of the spell.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: And there's some magical items out there too.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: We can transport you for sure.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: You could find a planetar.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: You you could.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: You could redeem a fallen angel.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's lots of ways.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: There's some ways.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Uh I was also thinking realistically, you could strike a deal.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: You could, yep.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: With either a devil or demon from a likely player or a DM?
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: Did it say?
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Uh unsure.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I heard that sometimes the super sticks mobiles might be able to make the jumps.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: That's only in certain universes of the Nine Hells.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: That's that's D616.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Happens to be the one we're in.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: No, no, I agree.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: I think that one's easy and complicated all at the same time.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, depending on how many what sort of a wild goose chase you wanted to send your players on, you could send them like in into the Faye realm, and then they could pass through some sort of portal and end up there as well.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: You know, if you're the DM and you're trying to guide your players towards a solution, they might need a little bit of hand holding to get there.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Like, this isn't necessarily information they're gonna know if they don't know it.
- 20:39unknown: Sure.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Like it's kind of hard to find out on the fly.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: You might need to lead them a little bit to a solution.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: I think especially if this is your first time ever being there.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Because it's like, yeah, I mean, when we did Rand Descent into Averdis, like you had to give us a lot of like known things.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Like well, even in that module, the way it's designed, you go to Candle Keep to learn more about the nine hells before you actually go.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, that's an easy way too.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Like, if you need to give your players a little bit of help, send them to the library, right?
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Have them do some research, they can find some information out, they can make some connections, it's a good way to kind of open up that game.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: If you know a guy who knows Traxagore, yes, then you're ready to rock and roll.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Uh next question.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, this one should be semi-easy.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Uh is initiative an ability check?
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Kind of, sort of, yes, no, because it does use your dexterity modifier.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would say yes.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Plus your proficiency gives you your initiative.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: An ability check?
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: Or ability I would say no.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: I think it's adjacent to ability checks, but it's not an ability check.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: I I think you're right.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: It's not defined as an ability check, but it uses ability to do it, would be a good way to explain it.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Um why would I care, I guess?
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Like what are they trying to get at?
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: You're looking at me like I know the answer to that.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: I do not.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: I just copy the questions into a Google Document.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: I'm just curious, right?
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Like, so what sort of a bonus or you know, something are they looking for to see if it applies to initiative?
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: Something that would boost an ability check.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Sure, but you're never really proficient in initiative as an ability.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: But it's more like a skill check than an ability check because your skill check takes whatever your ability is plus proficiency if you have it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: It's closer to that than it would be to actually ability, right?
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: It is interesting because, like, by what it is, I mean it's effectively when you're in a situation, you're checking to see how fast you go in that situation.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: It's reaction time.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: That's truthfully what it is.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: So, in a way, it kind of is an ability, but it's it's definitely not defined as an ability, though.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: So I can see where the mistake would be made, but it really isn't one.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: So reading initiative though, they're calling it a dexterity check.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: That is literally what the rule says.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: When combat starts, every participant makes a dexterity check to determine their place in the initiative order.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: You do get an added proficiency bonus, but it's classified as a dex check, which would be an ability check.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: So how quickly you can jump into combat.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Boy, we moved from being against this to being for it pretty damn quickly.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Only if you follow the rules.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: And there are suggestion, but that is according to the law, that is what it would be.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: I see a lot of disagreement in this rumor.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Or for all you regular DD players, according to the Raw.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I see.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Some people like it that way.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Brett's just giving us both a funny look.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: I'm I just don't care.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Well, we get to throw this rule book out when the new one comes out anyway.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: That's true, right?
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: So everybody toss out your 5e book.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Go buy the one D D.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, next question.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Where's our next hot take taking us?
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Uh it's very clear that every player has one action, one bonus action, one reaction.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: But do they have to happen in that specific order?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, could a player use their bonus action, then their action, then reaction?
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure that's the way it's designed.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: So especially a reaction, like you could take that.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Well, do you have to take it after your turn?
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Now I'm like questioning that actually.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: I know you can only take it once per round, but let's say you didn't roll first initiative.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: You're third.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: I think I think if you're going at the top.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you're the paladin.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: You want to use your reaction to have something or whatever.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: You know, those things you can do as a paladin.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: That Phil never plays.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: No, he just plays a rogue, even if he's not playing a rogue.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: You could do that even if you haven't taken your turn yet.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I think that's right.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I think you could take it in any way.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, really, the action bonus action reaction only 100% applies, probably if you're at the is a is it if you're at the top of the order.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: But even then, you could do a bonus action first to buff yourself, let's say, then take your action to attack, and then hold your reaction for later in that round needing to do something.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: I definitely know you can change the order of your bonus action and your action, because as a rogue, we like to disengage as a bonus action, and then you can use your action to dash as well.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Because you may have an ability that allows, like, let's say you may have a counter spell.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Counterspells don't pop up very often.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: A lot of people don't understand how they work, but typically counterspells are reactions.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: So if somebody fires a spell at you, you can use your reaction to cast a counterspell.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: That could happen before it's ever even your turn in a round.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: Opportunity attack.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Opportunity attacks, another good example.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: So I think it's kind of depends on where you're at, but it can go in any order.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: But you get one of each in a round, unless it says differently.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: So anything to add, Brett?
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: You guys got it.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: We talked ourselves around that one.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the fillin' rosh show.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Uh next question.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: This one, this one's a funny one.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: This one should be fun.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, how long would a dagger meant for a halfling be?
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Meant for a halfling?
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: And I probably spent way too long earlier thinking about this because I was like, you know, a normal dagger.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's a personal question.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: Hold on.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: Your dagger?
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: What is the average length of a normal of a medium?
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how about you Google sized?
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: I gotta spit it out.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: Medium-sized character.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: No.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to mark this one as explicit.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: Because a halfling is considered a small character, right?
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: So try not to add to the jokes.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: So do you have it?
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, you could still be a halfling and have big hands and have a normal sized dagger.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: It might be a short sword at that point, but I don't know.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: So is a halfling short sword just like a long sword human dagger?
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Maybe I don't know.
- 27:49unknown: Well.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: If you know any halflings, comment.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: Let us know.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Like, what is this question?
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: I don't understand.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Uh you know what?
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: You take artistic license with this one and you make that dagger as big as you want.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: But but if you think about it for a second, it does kind of make sense though, because let let's say a greatsword, for example.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Greatsword, in the book, there's one and it deals X amount of damage and has X amount for the attack, bonus for the attack, right?
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: But you may not be proficient in it, but as a halfling, you could pick up a greatsword and it's still going to do the same amount of damage.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: So, in relation to this question, a dagger for a full-size person, if a halfling's dagger is half the size, let's say I'm walking into this here.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: If it's only two and a half inches long or three inches long, is it still how hard you shove?
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: Wait, no, no, no.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: Let me rephrase that.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: Is it still how hard you fight with it that matters?
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Because it's still going to do the same amount of I can't believe I used the shove into sword fights.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Like so the base height of a halfling is two feet seven inches.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Holy biscuit.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: That dagger is four inches long, no bigger.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Then they've got a height modifier of two d4 to add to it.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: So they're not big, obviously.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: They're called a halfling.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Like it can't be can't be more than four inches.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like that's accurate.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I'm gonna get the type measure.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: I'm using my fingers to measure.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Hang on, let me go get a ruler.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: This is an inch, right?
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: So one, two, three, four.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: It's like that big.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: What if I have no podcast listeners if you could only see a can?
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: It's like my can.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Right there.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Hey, look, it's a halfling dagger.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 29:43unknown: Yeah.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Did we actually answer this question?
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: I don't even know.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: So also What was the question?
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: It was like how long the question was, how long would a dagger meant for a halfling be?
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Four inches.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: I think we've agreed on it.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, so here's my next question, because why not go down the spiral at this point?
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Does that include the hilt?
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: So is the hilt part of this?
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: And then that's the that's the blade, or I think four-inch blade.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, four-inch blade.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Then that's a short sword.
- 30:14unknown: What?
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: For halfling?
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: No.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: No, I like how long is a human how long is a human blade?
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying that he's always gonna think his thing is longer than it is.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: They're almost three feet.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Their dagger would be almost half a foot.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: So I feel like that's fine.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: There's been an epiphany.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: My quick Google search of short sword blade length is between 11.8 inches to 23.6 inches.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: So a halfling blade would be six inches long.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: A dagger blade is almost six.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: No, that's a short sword.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay, my cool.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: So that's a short sword for a human.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: So it's six inches long for a halfling.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: Wait, are we talking about a dagger or a short sword here?
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: We're talking about daggers, but a short sword.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Short sword.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: Oh boy.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: Between hopefully everybody's still with us.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: One and two feet.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: So if you have to.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: A dagger is shorter than a foot.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Basically.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: If that's a short sword.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: A dagger for a human is probably six inches.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: If you have a short sword.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be like three.
- 31:24unknown: Three.
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: So we'll change it from four to three.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: That's the official Barcin Barrels answer.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Three inch dagger for halflings.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's nothing else we've contributed to.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: I think that's this finger, right?
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: It can be as sharp as a dagger sometime, man.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Where do we go from here, Ross?
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: That's way too long.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: That took a long time to answer that one.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Well, I think we have time for one more.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Um, this one comes from a uh pretty sure this is a player character, wanting to know does anyone else prefer to have the have a backstory that is separate from the ongoing game story, or is this just my unique preference?
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: I think that is a hard one to answer.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: It's a personal choice, I feel like.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people do, but I also think there's a lot of there's a lot of fun that can be had if you tie your character's backstory into the campaign.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: And it gives the DM some kind of license there to add components of your backstory in more naturally than if your backstory is completely separate.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: It gets kind of hard to tie some of those things together.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: I think you're always gonna have some backstory that's not connected to the campaign because that's what your backstory is.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: It's outside of the campaign where you came from.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: So yes, but but like Phil said, yeah, you need to be able to incorporate who you are into where you are now.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: I think I think like the long if this is a brand new campaign with brand new characters, it's easier to have a separate backstory.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Because everybody's come up with something and you really don't know what to do with it yet.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: But the longer you play, I think the harder it is not to make connections back to somebody's backstory.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Because it's just it's just how you find ways to connect characters and where you came from and who you are, what makes you who you are.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like once I kill all the guys' characters when we resume this campaign, their new characters are probably gonna be tied to their old ones in some way.
- 33:26unknown: Yeah.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Spoiler alert.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Thanks, thanks, Phil.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: You're assuming you're gonna kill us.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: We all know that I don't ever let you die.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: You get saved by deities.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: So it's very true.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Very true.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: This time you're gonna end up with a life debt, but ooh, not that I planned this at all.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: At all.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna light some torches and walk into gas-filled dungeons again.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: Wouldn't be the first time, right?
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Any any other thoughts on that before we get out of here for the night?
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Is this that dagger question?
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: No, we're still on the dagger.
