Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Trump just 'wants to throw fancy parties for the billionaire class'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan Doyle joins me. Now he's also a
- 0:03Speaker 1: ranking member on the House Budget Committee. Congressman, is it
- 0:06Speaker 1: your understanding that this is a question of national security
- 0:09Speaker 1: or fancy parties?
- 0:12Speaker 2: No, it's absolutely absurd, and don't take my word for it.
- 0:14Speaker 2: When President Trump initially announced this project, he said not
- 0:19Speaker 2: one word about national security, not one word about his
- 0:22Speaker 2: own personal security. It was all about having a big,
- 0:26Speaker 2: beautiful ballroom because he just wants to be able to
- 0:29Speaker 2: throw fancy parties for the billionaire class that he hangs
- 0:32Speaker 2: out with at mar A Lago. Essentially it would be
- 0:35Speaker 2: mar A Lago, one thousand miles north. Then after months
- 0:40Speaker 2: go by, mind you, we have the attempted shooting at
- 0:44Speaker 2: the White House, correspondence dinner at the Hilton. Suddenly he invents,
- 0:49Speaker 2: wait a minute, this is a way I can justify
- 0:51Speaker 2: the ballroom. So that's the first sett of lies. The second,
- 0:54Speaker 2: of course, is the cost of taxpayers. For months and months,
- 0:57Speaker 2: he was saying this would not cost one dime of
- 1:00Speaker 2: taxpayer money. Then it came out it might be three
- 1:03Speaker 2: hundred million dollars. Then it came out it might be
- 1:05Speaker 2: four hundred million. Now the latest price tag nine hundred
- 1:09Speaker 2: million dollars of taxpayer money. At a time in which
- 1:13Speaker 2: we have an affordability crisis, he wants to spend almost
- 1:16Speaker 2: a billion dollars of taxpayer money on his big, beautiful ballroom.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Here's what I think is new in part here, Congressman,
- 1:24Speaker 1: which is, this is not the first time the President
- 1:26Speaker 1: has defied Congress. He's yet to receive approval for his
- 1:30Speaker 1: war of choice with Iran. But to have the Attorney
- 1:34Speaker 1: General of the United States hitting the Sunday Circuit and saying,
- 1:39Speaker 1: don't worry, Congress already gave him the approval and the
- 1:42Speaker 1: authority to build this ballroom. It shows such a blatant
- 1:47Speaker 1: disregard and disdain for the coequal branches of government. And
- 1:51Speaker 1: if they have that for everything from a war to
- 1:54Speaker 1: a ballroom, where does it go next?
- 1:57Speaker 2: Right? And that's actually the larger issue.
- 1:58Speaker 3: As bad enough as it is to spend a billion
- 2:01Speaker 3: dollars on this monstrosity and tearing down the entire East
- 2:06Speaker 3: wing of the White House is part and parcel of
- 2:09Speaker 3: the larger issue that this president and those minions who
- 2:14Speaker 3: work for him, including now the Attorney General, they want
- 2:17Speaker 3: to pretend that there aren't three branches of government.
- 2:20Speaker 2: They want to pretend there's only one article of the Constitution,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and that's the executive. Their O and B director has
- 2:26Speaker 2: acted in exactly the same way, wanting to take away
- 2:30Speaker 2: the power of the purse that Congress has always had
- 2:32Speaker 2: since the very beginning. And that's the really dangerous aspect
- 2:36Speaker 2: of Donald Trump and Trump two point zero, specifically over
- 2:40Speaker 2: Trump one point zero, you've.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Got a new pull from the Financial Times it finds
- 2:44Speaker 1: most Americans feel worse off under Trump. That includes fifty
- 2:48Speaker 1: seven percent of independent voters. All while you have the
- 2:52Speaker 1: president focusing on the ballroom renovation is what does that
- 2:57Speaker 1: tell you about his priorities, his life thereof? And from
- 3:00Speaker 1: a messaging perspective, how do you begin to tie for
- 3:03Speaker 1: the pain that people are feeling When you listen, I'm
- 3:06Speaker 1: sure you're in distruct You hear it every day at
- 3:07Speaker 1: the grocery store, at the pump. And the fact that
- 3:10Speaker 1: instead of you know, focusing on policies that would address
- 3:13Speaker 1: those challenges, the president has focused on his ballroom.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's exactly right, and you know you don't have to
- 3:19Speaker 2: take your word for it, your mind, let's actually listen
- 3:22Speaker 2: to what Donald Trump is outright said. He has said
- 3:25Speaker 2: he does not think about the financial situation of the
- 3:28Speaker 2: American people at all. He has also said, and I quote,
- 3:32Speaker 2: I love the inflation. So he has made it very
- 3:35Speaker 2: clear that he couldn't care less about these sort of
- 3:38Speaker 2: hardships that the American people have right now. It is
- 3:41Speaker 2: not surprising that, not just in the poll you cited,
- 3:44Speaker 2: but in other polls, American's confidence about this economy and
- 3:48Speaker 2: their future is at its lowest level since the autumn
- 3:52Speaker 2: of two thousand and eight, that is, when the Great
- 3:54Speaker 2: Recession was developing. The President has the lowest approval rating
- 3:58Speaker 2: on the economy since any president of going back to
- 4:02Speaker 2: George W. Bush in September October of two thousand and eight.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So you have a president who just doesn't care, doesn't
- 4:10Speaker 2: give a damn about the struggles of the ordinary American.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I will you to gain something out for me, which
- 4:15Speaker 1: is I'm sure you've seen that whenever anyone in this
- 4:17Speaker 1: administration is pressed on the current state of the economy,
- 4:20Speaker 1: they like to blame Joe Biden and act as though
- 4:22Speaker 1: it is still President Biden's economy. Unfortunately for them, these
- 4:26Speaker 1: are not President Biden's tariffs. This is not President Biden's
- 4:29Speaker 1: war of choice with Iran. I would wager that if
- 4:32Speaker 1: Democrats are to take back the House in November, you
- 4:35Speaker 1: go into January all of a sudden instead of blaming
- 4:37Speaker 1: things on Joe Biden, He's blaming things on all of you,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and you're democratically controlled House. What are the policy priorities
- 4:45Speaker 1: that begin to set this economy back on track that
- 4:48Speaker 1: are truly controllable from inside the House of Representatives.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, well, first and foremost, Congress has to retake its
- 4:56Speaker 2: constitutional authority as it relates to tariffs. That is the
- 5:00Speaker 2: quickest way we could deliver a pretty meaningful tax cut
- 5:05Speaker 2: for the American people. After all, a tariff is a
- 5:07Speaker 2: tax on an imported good. We have seen estimates that
- 5:11Speaker 2: between the tariff taxes and the absurd war that Donald
- 5:15Speaker 2: Trump launched in Iran, those two have combined to increase
- 5:18Speaker 2: costs for the American family of more than three thousand
- 5:22Speaker 2: dollars since Donald Trump took office. So delivering on tariff
- 5:26Speaker 2: relief number one and canceling those number two, also reclaiming
- 5:31Speaker 2: the power of Congress as it relates to war and peace,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and attempting to cut off once and for all this
- 5:38Speaker 2: stupid and reckless Iran war that has not only cost
- 5:42Speaker 2: us lives but of course is costing Americans every day.
- 5:45Speaker 1: At the pump, Congress and Brendan Boyle, I appreciate your time.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Thank you for being with us.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Thank you
