- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: John Arms is the founder of Voyager University where he helps experience professionals many navigating burnout or layoffs transition into fractional careers and rediscover purpose in their work.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: is that it's not just about career transition, it's about mindset, resilience, and helping people realize their value when they need it most.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_02]: John, welcome to Daily Influence.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for having me, Greg.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm super grateful to be here.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: John, I'm so grateful you're here.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_02]: Can you help us get started by sharing a bit about your background and what led you to where you are today?
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: Sure thing.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: Sure thing.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: So my background, there's not a baseball card for me yet, but I'm hoping someday I achieved such coolness that there's a baseball card for me.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm six foot four, you know, all that stuff.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: But my background is I actually grew up in marketing.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's where I got my business acumen and all of that.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: But, uh, where I, what got me here today was, uh, I had sold a business in 2018.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, you know what, I don't want to run a business anymore.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: And not like I did, like, I come from marketing.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I think I want to drive marketing for like three different businesses.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: That literally was it.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: I, we called it gig at that time.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: I had an idea.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: And now that was it.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like, how
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are you doing?
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, I'm doing what you're doing.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: My office is interesting, right?
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: We're kind of looking at each other like, this is a model for happiness and joy and wealth.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't just, you know, gig work.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: This there's depth here.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: So fast forward to today.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: We created the educational foundation to help people cross that bridge from W2 full-time work.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: into fractional 1099 work because we believe that it's so awesome for people, for their families, for the economy and for society.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, there's your little window in my background.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and, you know, you've built something that not only changes careers, but it really changes lives.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's, that's the big thing.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: This is, this is my setwork.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: It does change lives.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: Can you tell us about a moment or experience where you felt you made a positive impact
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm blessed enough to say that it's almost every day now, that it's almost every day.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: People, the easy lens to look at that is they come through our program and then they have clients and then they're happy and they're like, they're fulfilled again.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's the easy way.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: The best part of me, the best part of my day, not the best part of me is when people say, I had no idea.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: I had no idea that I could do this.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't believe in myself.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't believe in myself, and so to hear people say that I believe in my, they say I've got money, I've got clients, I've got a community, but when they say things like I believe in myself, I have resiliency.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I get up in the morning.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_02]: That kind of impacts speaks to something deeper than just professional success.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: It speaks to influence.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: Does, yeah, I mean, the best person you can ever bet on is yourself, not an easy bet for a lot of people.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: If you've been in a career,
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: 10, 20, 30 years.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: You've had a title.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: You've done all the things but you're just not feeling it.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: You kind of have to bet on yourself if you've been laid off or burned out.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of the only bet that's left.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it's scary for people, but when people do that on themselves, whole boy, look out.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's when the world changes so much for the better.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: And to be part of that, to help teach them, and coach them, and enable that.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: it's the best.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: I've never been so happy in my own career.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's wonderful.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: In our I&T series, we talk a lot about responsible influence and how every interaction we have creates a ripple.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: From your perspective, how do you define influence and what responsibility do we carry when we're guiding others especially in vulnerable moments like career transitions?
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right, are you ready?
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: This is a big one.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: This is a big part of our program.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'll talk about it how we coach this, okay?
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: We call it the circle.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: We also call it an infinite loop.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: And so when it comes to that, what you just described in Fluence of Others is we know from the data that when you populate yourself with nine other fractional circle, that's part of the win.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: We always say, okay, but now you have to go on inch wide, but a mild deep on that.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: You have to be vulnerable with that group.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: You have to be repetitive with that group.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's not about you.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: You're not there to sell, although people will give you referrals.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: We call it the way we teach it.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: We call it, you have to cultivate a garden of people.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: And when we give it that what you've got to care for it, you have to nurture it, you're going to, you're going to, you're going to alternate your crops right when you think about it like my influence is something I have to cultivate a nurture.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's not me getting up with the microphone talking about myself.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's me actually helping others, you know, the great book that I think it's a landmark book by Bob Bird, the goal giver really gives us the map for this is give first.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: give first cultivate that garden of others.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: And when you do that intentionally, I think that's our responsibility.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what are the why can't we pick this up those?
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, right, are recently is there are two moments in our life in our professional life.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: One is to find what our gifts are.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: And the second is to share them with others.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: Now you didn't hear that word to sell them to others.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: or to convince others, it's behind your gifts and share them with others.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I think about it like a garden, I think our influence has ever, it's just not transactional, it's relational.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_02]: That is so true.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_02]: And you've spoken about how people can get stuck in what you described as a prison of their own making when it comes to their thoughts.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_02]: How can individuals begin to shift that mindset and take back control of their narrative?
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so have you ever heard the book by Malcolm Gladwell outliers?
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: I have not.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: Great book.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: Great book.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: You'll love it.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: It yet another great book.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: And in outliers, it's kind of become popular in business vernacular.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: Gladwell talks about the the 10,000 hour effect.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: If you have 10,000 hours and something, you become a master.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: You become a master.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: So in our and how we help
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: is it begins with understanding that you actually are a master.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: Gladwell was, if you have 10,000 hours, and whatever your lane is, HR or ops, a lot of people don't realize that.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh my God, I've had this long career, and it's been arduous and like wait a minute.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: You've been sharpening a blade for over 10,000 hours.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_01]: You are more awesome than you're ever gonna be.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: now is the time.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: And so when we talk about identity and fractional and and and how we come at that is understand that your mastery exists now in the market needs it now and it's kind of time to take advantage of it that's identity work.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and that shift in thinking often becomes a turning point in someone's life.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: So huge, you know, the.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: The sad part of our economy, I think sort of what we've gotten ourselves into, we've gotten ourselves into a little bit of trouble and what I mean by that is we've decided over decades that title, pedigree, posturing, theater, you know, we structure for it, we reward for it, there's in, there's institutions all around that and it doesn't have much to do with the soul or the master.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: But we've gotten ourselves into trouble by prioritizing those incredibly high.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: So when people break through that, uh, it's in our program anyway, we get them like, no, we're not talking about where you work before.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: We're not talking about your title.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: We're not talking about the logo that used to work for because it doesn't matter.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about the master within and people like, how about master?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, let's get there.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get there because the market needs your master.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: If you could go back and offer advice to your younger self, what would you share?
- 9:41[SPEAKER_02]: And how might that guidance help others who are on their journey?
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: Why do you say that?
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Because as I was journaling last night, I was journaling on this subject.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was just thinking about it like, what would I tell my younger self?
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was listening to a podcast.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: It asked me almost the same question.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: And you want to know what the first thing I said was?
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: John, go fishing more.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: That was what, that was what I told my younger self, go fishing more, but it was intentional.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: It was intentional when I met by that was, for me, I grew up in Minnesota or surrounded by lakes, you can't not go fishing, right?
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's just part of the world.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: But the point of the matter is get outdoors, be contemplative, think more life will come at you.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: It comes at everybody in good ways and in bad ways and it's just gonna be harsh on you sometimes.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: with something bigger than yourself.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: Go out, doors, connect with nature.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a spiritual person, connect with your spirituality, community has, but just connect, we get so used to just doing.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: What is that to that line?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a, I need to be a human being, not a human doing.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: And another thing I think we've gotten ourselves in trouble with was essentially treated humanity as machinery.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Be more productive.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's human doing.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: I would tell my younger self.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: go outdoors more, contemplate more, sit on a rock, you'll do plenty of work in your life.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: You're gonna do stuff, you're gonna put in the hours in unavoidable, unavoidable, but go think and do more.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I would tell my underself.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: That is great advice.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, John, you're working with so many individuals who are navigating change later in their careers.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: And a big part of your help is working with people over 40, rediscover their value and create new paths.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: What have you learned about resilience, purpose, and the role that we play in helping others see their potential, especially when they can't see it themselves?
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's it's hard to see if you're the pickle and the pickle jar.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: You can't see the ingredients because they're on the outside of the pickle jar.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard to see so one of the things I've learned is teach is just to just the awareness of that it really is hard to see it and then there's social and cultural things that almost prevent you from doing that in the Midwest.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: We have something called the aweshox factor.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: Don't say anything nice about me.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, shocks.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to reject that so we do we have to be kind of a certain level of self awareness that we're awesome.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: But that we're awesome and we have a lot of gifts.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: So what I teach in what I have learned is that our own ability to see ourselves for the magnificence we are and lean into that and spend time on it and think about it, especially if you're over 45, because it's there, there's a great book.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: There's a great book called From Strength to Strength.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's required reading in our program by Arthur Brooks.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I love how the psychology, you're the psychiatry, you're the forensics, whatever we call it, how it breaks out.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: It says you have two parts to your career.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: Part one is what they call fluid intelligence in the book.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: You're running your cruise in, you're learning, you're doing stuff, you're build build build, and that takes you till a ball 40.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: And that's a good thing you have to do it.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: Part two, all of that crystallizes into wisdom.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: It crystallizes in the wisdom.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: And we have a responsibility at that point of, we're in the wisdom stage of our life.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: But we're still working in the grind part of our life.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: There's a mismatch.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: This is why burnout is so high in America right now.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's we're still grinding when we should be doing wisdom stuff.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what's great about fractional.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: All fractional wants is it wisdom.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: Clients want you or wisdom, your layer of thinking, the middle market, whose bias fractional talent and they need your layer of thinking.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: They don't need 60 hours a week.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: They don't need that.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: They need your layer of thinking.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I love what Arthur Brooks has done.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: There's actually a great podcast with Arthur Brooks and Chip Conley from Modern Elder Academy, just fantastic.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: One of these days, I'm gonna go down there.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's in Tauce, New Mexico.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh my God, I'll go just for that.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: But Chip's stuff is Chip's amazing work, it's just amazing.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the same idea is on that other side.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's not the downslope of your career, which we've been trained to think.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, cost and tell you retired.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: You're going up.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: Your job now is to share that gift of wisdom with the world.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's the job.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's very, I think liberating when we realize that about ourselves.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I love that.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_02]: That's amazing.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, for those listening today, this conversation might be exactly what they need.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_02]: What message are words of encouragement?
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: Would you like to share with our listeners who aspire to make a positive difference in their lives and in the world, whether it's in their careers, the communities, or just in their daily interactions?
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would say, the world's a little crazy lately.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: Since COVID, it's been kind of on a steady state of crazy and the AI and the layoffs, and we're at a war right now.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: And what I would say is, it's hard to live in that type of there's just a lot going on right now.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: So it's hard to stay positive, but you have to.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: One of the greatest skills you can have.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: to be positive when you have absolutely no reason to be so to be just just to be positive and you know, I get it.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like when the world's collapsing around you's like, you want me to be positive.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, well, you know what?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: Positive can't solve anything, but I know negative can't solve a damn thing.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_01]: So finding the positive when you're challenged is really, really critical.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I think now it's probably harder to see, when you find out that there's 30,000 layoffs over here and no one over 45 is getting hired.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: And the insanity of the, I mean, it's just there's so much negative feedback.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to be positive, which guess what, that's when it's needed most.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: That's when we're challenged the most, so having a positive attitude and I don't say that flippily, that's really hard to do.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's incredibly hard to do.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't say it as a pop psychology, you know, bumper sticker.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's like that's hard work.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_02]: It is very hard work and, you know, finding tools out there that can help you with that mindset that was a whole premise around our podcasts and daily influences to give people a daily dose of positivity, whether it's five to 30 minutes and just trying to bring others like you to our audience, other, you know, ideas and to be coming to get you more positive to help you think in a more positive way.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: the work they're doing is really important.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: I read this this week.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: We consume in a day, even I consume in a day and here in 2026 as human beings, what Thomas Edison consumed in a year as far as information.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: And if you think and I'll think about daily influence, right?
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: So that information will influence you.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: So then what is the nature of what we consume?
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: And if you step back
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: Whoa, doomsgrowing, fear, negative feedback loops, like the work you're doing, like we have to work harder at good influence, because the negative stuff, it's common over the transcend more than it ever has.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: We have to be intentional about having it at least having an equal and opposite effect to that.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: Remember, well, we are kids and they would say you are what you eat, well, I think we are what we eat, but we are what we see in what we hear.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's on each of us to put those, think of those inputs that we're taking in that we're seeing and they were hearing and choose ones that are positive to help you become more positive.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: Or if it's going to be negative, just say, you know what, I'm not letting that in.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: You are only on this world once bars, I know.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: And you don't have to let stuff in that you don't want to let in.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: It'll want it's, I have a great friend who's a psychologist.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: I love how she puts it.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: She goes, when I teach people and coach people, she calls it the leaf.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: She's set up, there's a negative thought.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: Put it on the leaf and let it go down the river.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: You can do that.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_01]: I love the visual of that.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like here's the negativity.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: Put it on the leaf and just let the river take it.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: Because you know what we'll do, we'll obsess over it, we'll bring it back, we'll think about it, we'll pick it apart, we'll get our OCD, I'll take over, I'm convinced by the way that all Gen Xers, I know I'm Gen X, you probably are close to that too.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like we are totally OCD, 80D, that's probably part of our culture.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: And so we'll look at things and like, oh, I got a, I can't just let it go down the river, I got to overthink it.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: But we don't have to, there's no rule that says so.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: There's no rule that says so.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_02]: And when you can do that, it is so freeing.
