Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, this is Nathan here, guitarist from crypt Yeah, old
- 0:04Speaker 1: school Brisbane death metal band, and we're pumped to play
- 0:09Speaker 1: potentially looking like our last ever show at Necrosonic Fest
- 0:14Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks and a few serendipitous moments.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It's the thirtieth anniversary of our demo that came out
- 0:20Speaker 1: in ninety four, and it's actually the same month and
- 0:23Speaker 1: the same venue as Alan, our drummer's first ever gig
- 0:26Speaker 1: with the band.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Wow, that's kind of unbelievable, isn't it. Yeah, like it was.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's about two weeks apart, but thirty years Yeah.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Fuck a hell, you're gonna be a cracker of a
- 0:36Speaker 3: night then.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Oh mane sure is we are sure, we are ready
- 0:41Speaker 1: as will.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Ever beweet so as you say, Brave crick, I wanted
- 0:46Speaker 4: thirty bands appearing at next Prosonic Festival at the Mansfield
- 0:49Speaker 4: Tabin on August thirty first. It's a massive day of
- 0:52Speaker 4: medal with thirty bands over three stages and twelve hours. Mate,
- 0:55Speaker 4: But how do you feeling about the show? Like you're
- 0:58Speaker 4: excited for it?
- 0:59Speaker 2: Or is it like bit hell?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no, no, we're guns blazing.
- 1:05Speaker 4: And it's like like imagined before me, Like it's going
- 1:09Speaker 4: to be that little bit more special for crypt who
- 1:11Speaker 4: returned to the stage after a number of years away
- 1:13Speaker 4: for a one off performance, especially for Resonic Maye, Like
- 1:17Speaker 4: what made you decide to commit to this particular shower
- 1:20Speaker 4: to have your last show?
- 1:22Speaker 1: Well, Kent, he just talked to us around he he
- 1:26Speaker 1: bumped into Cliff I was last year at some point
- 1:29Speaker 1: asked us to play, and it was just like, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like it's just because we're so we're all spread apart,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and then.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Eventually it was like, okay, let's do it.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And it's just gained tons of momentum since. And look,
- 1:41Speaker 1: it's it's unreal because there's no there is nothing like
- 1:44Speaker 1: this anymore. You know, this is like metal for the
- 1:47Speaker 1: brain and stuff like that. There's there's nothing around anymore.
- 1:51Speaker 4: You're actually right, you know, there's a lot of festivals
- 1:53Speaker 4: like coming out these days that I just like foam
- 1:56Speaker 4: metal festivals. Now, you've got a couple of token metal
- 1:58Speaker 4: bands in there, but there's not many that are actual
- 2:01Speaker 4: rutally fucking heavy as this one.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's put a killer lineup, good mix, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 1: like it's all heavy, but you know, it covers like
- 2:10Speaker 1: a whole lot of different stuff, newer bands, old Obviously
- 2:15Speaker 1: he's managed to get some of us old bustards out
- 2:17Speaker 1: to you.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Know what I mean, which is but it's great. I mean,
- 2:21Speaker 2: it's it's it's it's fucking awesome.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 4: And at all the bands playing BRO, are there any
- 2:26Speaker 4: survivors from your era when you guys are have your
- 2:29Speaker 4: peak in the nineties, eigh there's miseries or any more.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to pld post life disorder. They're playing,
- 2:37Speaker 2: you know, they're.
- 2:37Speaker 1: They're probably a little bit later, but still that's back
- 2:39Speaker 1: around what we used to gig together with them back
- 2:42Speaker 1: in the day.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look, there's there's members as well that
- 2:47Speaker 2: we're in.
- 2:47Speaker 1: You know, there's bands that are playing who've got guys
- 2:49Speaker 1: that were around back then.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Mhm.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And I mean Psycroptic we're not that long after after
- 2:57Speaker 1: those days either.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Mentality there there from back in the day.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, therefore there's a tense fear dang starr throng.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, yeah, totally.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Now a bit of a history Lason here. Bro like
- 3:11Speaker 4: Crip formed in Brisbane at the start of the ninety nineties. Mate,
- 3:14Speaker 4: So what was it a musical climate like back then
- 3:17Speaker 4: that gave birth to you guys, And where did it
- 3:18Speaker 4: fit in initially?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oh, the Brisbane was a good scene. It's always been
- 3:22Speaker 1: pretty good for bands back then. And the great thing
- 3:26Speaker 1: I think back then was you could go to gigs
- 3:29Speaker 1: and see medal with kind of you know, alternative because
- 3:33Speaker 1: that was like the alternative era, I guess. But we
- 3:36Speaker 1: would go to the Roxy in the Valley, dream Killers, Pangaea, Misery,
- 3:41Speaker 1: you know, like bands like this would be all on
- 3:45Speaker 1: the same bill bands, so there was always there was
- 3:55Speaker 1: always stuff to go to. Yeah, yeah, I mean even
- 3:59Speaker 1: there was like kind of you wouldn't call it regional,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but like suburban metal gigs as well. And you know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you think about it now where everyone's got smartphones and internet,
- 4:09Speaker 1: you wonder how you even heard about these gigs.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But everyone was there.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, the old sky plaster posters up everywhere.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Records and skinnies and stuff. You know, you would see
- 4:19Speaker 1: a flyer there for something.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Everyone was there. It was great. You could get into
- 4:24Speaker 2: these gigs underage back in the day as well.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You know, we were like fourteen or fifteen Curacy of
- 4:29Speaker 1: Iron and Armed Angel and stuff. You know, that was
- 4:32Speaker 1: one of my first gigs Armed Angel with I think
- 4:34Speaker 1: it was Iron Lightning and Apparent Flitzkreig or something like
- 4:39Speaker 1: that that blew my fucking mind.
- 4:43Speaker 3: You mentioned a few bands here I've got written down
- 4:45Speaker 3: through bro Like.
- 4:46Speaker 4: The nineties was a great period for not just bridal
- 4:49Speaker 4: metal but Australian medal in general. Like you had Green Fellows,
- 4:51Speaker 4: as Blood Dusters, Damaged Angels, just to name a few men.
- 4:55Speaker 3: But well, why do you think ossie bands really excelled
- 4:58Speaker 3: in that decade?
- 5:01Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I guess there was no distractions. I know for us
- 5:04Speaker 1: back then, all we did was rehearse. We used to
- 5:07Speaker 1: just hang out and rehearse, like three four nights a week.
- 5:10Speaker 2: That was like what we did.
- 5:12Speaker 1: You know, We'd just meet there on the weekends and
- 5:14Speaker 1: just rehearse all night. It's just what everyone did.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I think. You know, there was and there was outlets
- 5:21Speaker 2: for it because you could just play gigs all the time.
- 5:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It was like it was a real social kind of
- 5:27Speaker 1: vibe as well, I think because it wasn't probably not
- 5:29Speaker 1: a lot else to do in Brisbane back then.
- 5:33Speaker 4: True, my memories of those days too, bro Like, it
- 5:36Speaker 4: was a lot more of a of a makeship vibe.
- 5:39Speaker 4: You know, there was these seem to be competing against
- 5:42Speaker 4: each other for that little slice of the pie.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But back then, no one gave a fuck. You know,
- 5:46Speaker 3: like if you were playing, then come out and support you,
- 5:48Speaker 3: and there was no no competition.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just like I said, it was like
- 5:53Speaker 1: a social scene as much as a music scene. It
- 5:55Speaker 1: was just like that's what everyone did. You just hung
- 5:58Speaker 1: out on the weekend and you just you'd see all
- 6:00Speaker 1: the same people there all the time.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Mmm.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Sure, Now you.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Mentioned this before, but you're also celebrating the thirtieth anniversary
- 6:08Speaker 4: of your GAMO cassette.
- 6:10Speaker 3: It's cruciating agony, mate. So does that mean you're going
- 6:13Speaker 3: to be playing that in full?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah we're and we're we're playing it like as
- 6:20Speaker 1: the demo as well, because as the years went by,
- 6:21Speaker 1: it got sped up and you know, we've slowed it down,
- 6:25Speaker 1: we've tuned down.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And it sounds unbelievable. Yeah, yeah, unbelievable.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And we've got big banners for the stage with the
- 6:33Speaker 1: demo artwork and stuff like that's you know, that's going
- 6:36Speaker 1: to be part of the vibe.
- 6:38Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 6:39Speaker 2: So anyone into that will be having a good time.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so you're probably in.
- 6:45Speaker 4: A good position to tell this now because you would
- 6:46Speaker 4: have been playing those songs a lot rehearsing.
- 6:48Speaker 3: So in reflection of the songs on that demo stood
- 6:52Speaker 3: the test of time pretty well.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, hell yeah, yeah, they still they sound amazing, and
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's you know, it's it's also a chance, I guess
- 7:00Speaker 1: when you step away from the band for a number
- 7:01Speaker 1: of years and you come back, as you've changed as
- 7:05Speaker 1: a person, you hear the music differently and the songs.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I think that's the thing we've kind of realized is.
- 7:12Speaker 1: While we're probably towards the end of the original era,
- 7:15Speaker 1: at the start of the two thousands, everything.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Was just getting faster and faster.
- 7:18Speaker 1: But now we've actually we kind of finessed the tempos
- 7:22Speaker 1: of the song and just the feel, and it just
- 7:24Speaker 1: makes the songs actually stand out, you know that just
- 7:27Speaker 1: big riffs. Obviously, Grant's voice is still it hasn't changed
- 7:32Speaker 1: at all. It's crazy, you know, he turns up to
- 7:36Speaker 1: first rehearsal, it's just like there it is.
- 7:40Speaker 2: In yeah, yeah, so's.
- 7:42Speaker 1: He's it just it just sounds fucking killer. The demo
- 7:47Speaker 1: in particular slowed down it's.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Like, yeah, we're loving it. We're having a great time.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Like yeah. And earlier this year you also re released
- 7:55Speaker 3: your ninety ninety eight El Nino. So how was the
- 7:57Speaker 3: reception to that?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's we just we went back to
- 8:03Speaker 1: the we pulled it all from digital and then put
- 8:07Speaker 1: it back up as the OG kind of mixes and
- 8:10Speaker 1: artwork and that stuff.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's just it's just there, you know.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think, I mean, is probably a bit different to
- 8:17Speaker 1: our first two releases. Just Cliff was on drums and
- 8:20Speaker 1: it was getting a bit more flashy some of the
- 8:23Speaker 1: riffs and whatnot, you know, but it's yeah, I mean,
- 8:28Speaker 1: there's some killer tunes on there, and it probably hints
- 8:31Speaker 1: at where we would have gone had we kept going,
- 8:33Speaker 1: but we didn't.
- 8:34Speaker 2: You know, well we did eventually, you know, we put.
- 8:37Speaker 1: The seven inch out what seven years ago, a couple
- 8:42Speaker 1: of new tunes, and we're actually recording a new.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Song this weekend.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, tell us more about that.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It's called Chilling Madness and it's yeah, it's just like
- 8:51Speaker 2: another crip song.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yes, so it's what fans would expect from nowadays.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just riffs, you know, like
- 8:58Speaker 2: rifts and vocal in.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It was kind of like when we did the tour
- 9:04Speaker 1: in twenty sixteen and did the box set, I just
- 9:08Speaker 1: started writing songs. We kind of had an idea to
- 9:11Speaker 1: do maybe an album or an EP, but in the
- 9:13Speaker 1: end we just went for the seven inch two songs.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But this is still left over from back then, right,
- 9:19Speaker 1: So yeah, we're tracking it this weekend.
- 9:21Speaker 2: It'll be out the day before the gig.
- 9:24Speaker 3: That's awesome. Bro, that's awesome.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And we got Brenton Wright who did the demo artwork.
- 9:29Speaker 1: He's done the artwork for this new song.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Fuck Been Nostalgia. That's awesome.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, he just popped up when because I found the
- 9:36Speaker 1: original artwork for the demo and he popped up on
- 9:38Speaker 1: Facebook and commented it, and I just got in touch
- 9:40Speaker 1: and said, hey, we're recording you want.
- 9:42Speaker 2: To do the art and is like yeah, yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 4: So you don't have to forgive me for saying this
- 9:47Speaker 4: ro but the way you're talking and the enthusiasm in
- 9:50Speaker 4: your voice, and.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Then the fact that you recorded on the day it's
- 9:55Speaker 3: going to be your last day, this is definitely going
- 9:57Speaker 3: to be it.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Look, you can't say you'll never do something again, because
- 10:04Speaker 1: I never thought we'd do this gig again.
- 10:05Speaker 2: But you know, I think so, like we just we
- 10:10Speaker 2: live far apart. It's it's it's hard, and.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I've been flowing up every three weeks for rehearsals and
- 10:20Speaker 1: it's starts to wear you down.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And look, we're not getting any younger either.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And it's yeah, it's just I don't know. I think
- 10:30Speaker 1: it's good to go out with a bang like this,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know for sure.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Yeah, for those who may not have seen seen the
- 10:39Speaker 4: live show from prit before they run us.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Through, what do you expect, It's just going to be intense, intense.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I know when I play this stuff, it's just it's
- 10:52Speaker 1: hard to explain what happens, but you just you turn
- 10:55Speaker 1: into that person again. Yeah, that's all I can say.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It's like when we got in the room and started
- 11:03Speaker 1: rehearsing for this, it's just like there's just something there
- 11:06Speaker 1: with us guys, and it's you know, it's all original
- 11:08Speaker 1: guys like we've got there's no new members, so there's
- 11:14Speaker 1: just something about the feel of it. The only thing
- 11:16Speaker 1: is when Cliff took over base from Dave, but he
- 11:21Speaker 1: was the drummer on El Nino, you know what I mean.
- 11:22Speaker 1: So it's all original, guys, and it's just when we
- 11:26Speaker 1: play it just sounds like crypt so it just it
- 11:31Speaker 1: just sounds the way it always has.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for you, Tom Made. It's been a pleasure
- 11:38Speaker 4: to speak with you Made. You've got me excited for
- 11:39Speaker 4: the show. You'll be out there on August and thirty
- 11:42Speaker 4: first at the Mansfield Tavern, so you'll patch it there
- 11:45Speaker 4: for a beer.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Can't wait, Buddie. Thanks a lot for the chat. Appreciate it.
