Speaker 5: Welcome to the show. Got a lot we're gonna get
• 1:39
Speaker 5: to today. I'm just happy to have a somewhat calmer
• 1:41
Speaker 5: weather day today. So you know, weather was really interesting
• 1:44
Speaker 5: here in the Canall Valley yesterday because hardly anything in Charleston,
• 1:48
Speaker 5: and I live in Putnam County, and I drive over
• 1:50
Speaker 5: to Putnam County three thirty four o'clock yesterday afternoon. There's
• 1:53
Speaker 5: actually snow on the ground over there. And of course
• 1:56
Speaker 5: places like Beckley in southern West Virginia got hit really
• 1:58
Speaker 5: hard to calm weather day, although we've got some concerns
• 2:03
Speaker 5: about flooding. But I'm actually giving Brian Hughes the day
• 2:05
Speaker 5: off today, so that's I'm gonna let him arrest up
• 2:08
Speaker 5: a little bit, all right on the show today, of course,

• 2:42
Speaker 5: a huge event happening Saturday night at the Clay Center
• 2:45
Speaker 5: with the folks at Recovery Point. Leah Cook and Rory
• 2:47
Speaker 5: Isaac are with those folks that they join us in
• 2:50
Speaker 5: the studio this morning. Lea, good morning, Welcome, to the show.
• 2:52
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave, thanks for having us and Rory.
• 2:54
Speaker 5: Great to meet you and have you in the shows
• 2:56
Speaker 5: on the show as well.
• 2:57
Speaker 7: Good to meet you as well, Davin, Thanks very much.
• 2:59
Speaker 3: All right, thank you guys for being here.
• 3:01
Speaker 5: Big event, Big happening over to Clay Center Saturday night,
• 3:04
Speaker 5: the night after Valentine's Day, so you could ideally go
• 3:09
Speaker 5: ahead and make it a late one day, late Valentines Date,
• 3:13
Speaker 5: with the proceeds benefiting Recovery Point. It's called Harmonies for Hope.
• 3:17
Speaker 5: Leah give us the overall.
• 3:18
  Speaker 3: On the event.
• 3:19
Speaker 6: Yeah, so this is actually our second annual Harmonies for
• 3:22
Speaker 6: Hope event. We had the event last year and really
• 3:25
Speaker 6: had a great turnout, so we were excited to bring
• 3:27
Speaker 6: it back for year two. Playing off Valentine's Day a
• 3:30
Speaker 6: little bit, focusing on John Prime and other love songs,
• 3:33
Speaker 6: which is exciting. We hope that people want to spend
• 3:35
Speaker 6: their Valentine's Day with us. But yeah, so Saturday at
• 3:38
Speaker 6: seven pm at the Clay Center. This is to benefit
• 3:41
Speaker 6: Recovery Point West Virginia, a substance use disorder program throughout
• 3:44
Speaker 6: the state. We serve around three hundred and sixty individuals
• 3:48
Speaker 6: in our long term recovery programs. This is a nine
• 3:51
Speaker 6: to fifteen month program where individuals live with us day
• 3:54
Speaker 6: in and day out. And the really great thing about
• 3:57
Speaker 6: Recovery Point is that we provide all of these services
• 4:00
Speaker 6: completely free to all of the individuals we serve. So
• 4:03
Speaker 6: having benefits like this concert really help us be able
• 4:07
Speaker 6: to do that, to welcome anyone that wants to come
• 4:10
Speaker 6: in our doors in with no cost to them at all.
• 4:13
Speaker 5: A couple of the key things I want to talk
• 4:15
Speaker 5: about about the concert event, and then we'll spend us
• 4:17
Speaker 5: a little bit more time talking about Recovery Point. You
• 4:20
Speaker 5: had me at two names here when you said John
• 4:22
Speaker 5: Ingram is putting this thing together and Rory. You and
• 4:25
Speaker 5: I were talking about the greatness that is John Ingram
• 4:28
Speaker 5: in the in the green room earlier, but also John Prine.
• 4:31
Speaker 5: I am a huge, huge John Prine fan.
• 4:34
Speaker 3: That makes two of us.
• 4:37
Speaker 7: When we had this idea last year, I went to
• 4:41
Speaker 7: Leah and said, hey, and I'm thinking about another fundraising event.
• 4:46
Speaker 7: What would you think of a benefit concert that we
• 4:50
Speaker 7: sort of attribute to John Prime?
• 4:53
Speaker 3: And she was all for it.
• 4:54
Speaker 7: So I made a couple of calls and everybody said,
• 4:57
Speaker 7: if you want to do this, you got to get
• 4:58
Speaker 7: one guy. His name is also John. Yeah, it's just
• 5:01
Speaker 7: John Ingram And uh, I tell you this a few
• 5:05
Speaker 7: minutes ago to the band that he is that he
• 5:07
Speaker 7: put together last year, in the band he's put together
• 5:09
Speaker 7: this year. Or they're just incredible. We had our first
• 5:13
Speaker 7: rehearsal on Sunday and I was blown away. I called
• 5:15
Speaker 7: in when we got out and said, oh my lord,
• 5:18
  Speaker 7: this fan.
• 5:19
Speaker 3: Is stupid good. When you when you say oh my lord,
• 5:23
Speaker 3: then you wait a minute, you know. But but but
• 5:25
Speaker 3: that's in a good way, right, in a good.
• 5:27
Speaker 7: Yeah, in a very good way. They are really good.
• 5:31
Speaker 7: And uh, you know, we got Sarah Gerrose headlining this thing,
• 5:34
Speaker 7: and she was She's four time Grammy Award winner, was
• 5:37
Speaker 7: nominated for two Grammys this year, but she got beat
• 5:40
Speaker 7: out by Charleston girls, Sarah Sierra Ferrell.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: They were in the same category.
• 5:45
Speaker 5: And but how cool is that now as a musical person,
• 5:48
Speaker 5: as as I am not a performer by these trenches
• 5:50
Speaker 5: of the imagination, but as a musical fan, to have
• 5:53
Speaker 5: somebody who's going to be headlining this concert to get
• 5:55
Speaker 5: beat out by someone from Charleston, I mean to have
• 5:59
Speaker 5: have that kind of an energy going on from the
• 6:01
Speaker 5: music scene here and there.
• 6:02
Speaker 3: That's that's pretty good stuff. Ry that really truly is.
• 6:06
Speaker 7: And I was hoping maybe Sierrah would win three and
• 6:08
Speaker 7: Sarah would win one so we could say five time
• 6:10
Speaker 7: Grammy award, right, But we actually do have five Grammys
• 6:13
Speaker 7: on it because Chance McCoy, who's also on the show
• 6:17
Speaker 7: this week, is won a Grammy with Old Crow Medicine
• 6:21
Speaker 7: Show and he is back with Old Crow Medicine Show now.
• 6:24
Speaker 3: So I remember that.
• 6:25
  Speaker 5: I mean, I'm a fan of theirs as well. I
• 6:27
Speaker 5: remember when they played a show over to Ballpark about
• 6:30
Speaker 5: ten years or so ago. It's fantastic show over.
• 6:32
Speaker 3: To out of town.
• 6:33
Speaker 7: I was living in Houston then, okay, but I saw
• 6:36
Speaker 7: him at the Clay Center about a year and a
• 6:37
Speaker 7: half two years ago.
• 6:39
  Speaker 3: Fantastic they were.
• 6:41
Speaker 5: It's a great lineup, I mean not just with the headliners,
• 6:43
Speaker 5: but you've got a lot of other big time performers
• 6:45
Speaker 5: on the show as well.
• 6:47
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 6:47
Speaker 7: Amathus Kia is also, she's she's very good. She was
• 6:50
Speaker 7: Grammy nominated in twenty twenty. But she's from over in
• 6:56
Speaker 7: Johnson City, Tennessee, with the school there, and I've listened
• 7:00
Speaker 7: to a lot of her music since John suggested her.
• 7:03
Speaker 7: She's been on Mountain Stage, as has Sarah. That's where
• 7:07
Speaker 7: I saw Sarah the first time, was on Mountain Stage,
• 7:09
Speaker 7: and she is really really good. And they all have
• 7:12
Speaker 7: connections to John Prime, which I really like. Sarah has
• 7:15
Speaker 7: done a couple of his songs. We go on YouTube
• 7:18
Speaker 7: and see her version of Unweed Father. It's probably the
• 7:21
Speaker 7: best version of Unweed Father I've ever heard in my life.
• 7:25
  Speaker 3: Really good.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: I know a lot of work has gone into putting
• 7:27
Speaker 5: this concert together, and you folks certainly have, but I
• 7:31
Speaker 5: know there's probably some other folks that you need to
• 7:33
Speaker 5: thank as well, So I like to give people an
• 7:34
Speaker 5: opportunity to do that.
• 7:36
Speaker 7: Yeah, the first people that we need to think are
• 7:38
Speaker 7: our sponsors and Games and Anny Whorley helped us with
• 7:42
Speaker 7: the first one, but they really stepped up this year.
• 7:44
Speaker 7: Games and I talked and Games says ror we go
• 7:46
Speaker 7: out and get some bigger names or get more bigger names,
• 7:50
Speaker 7: and so he really stepped up to help. If they're
• 7:53
Speaker 7: the presenting sponsors, then we've got in Covia, We've got Steven,
• 7:58
Speaker 7: Sharon Rubin, Andy and Margot Teeter are helping us with it.
• 8:02
Speaker 7: Kelly and Melissa Castleberry, Robin and Paula Bailey.
• 8:06
Speaker 3: Who am I forgetting Leah, Steve Whorley.
• 8:10
Speaker 7: Steve Worley, Steve and Laura Worley are also helping us.
• 8:14
Speaker 7: So we've got quite a few Charlestonians that believe in
• 8:20
Speaker 7: what we're doing at Recovery Point, and really.
• 8:22
Speaker 3: That's what this is about. Yeah, yeah, and I want
• 8:24
Speaker 3: to talk about that.
• 8:24
Speaker 5: By the way, if you want to go over to
• 8:26
Speaker 5: my social media page, Dave Allen Radio, I've actually got
• 8:29
Speaker 5: the poster on there that's posted in the preview of
• 8:31
Speaker 5: the show today that you can see all the other
• 8:33
Speaker 5: performers that are going to be taking part in this
• 8:35
Speaker 5: as well, because there's a bunch of them, not just
• 8:36
Speaker 5: the headliners. As you mentioned, Let's talk about Recovery Point
• 8:40
Speaker 5: and let's talk about the work that you folks do.
• 8:44
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 8:44
Speaker 6: Absolutely, So, like I mentioned, we are a statewide organization.
• 8:47
Speaker 6: We have long term residential facilities. Here in Charleston is
• 8:52
Speaker 6: our one hundred bed women's facilities. So at any given
• 8:54
Speaker 6: time over on the West and we have one hundred
• 8:57
Speaker 6: ladies trying to get their life back on track and
• 8:59
Speaker 6: we do absolutely everything we can from you know, helping
• 9:02
Speaker 6: get driver's license, so security cards, finding employment, job training,
• 9:07
Speaker 6: et cetera. While they're under our care. So they're with
• 9:10
Speaker 6: us anywhere from nine to sometimes fifteen months, getting clean
• 9:14
Speaker 6: and sober and really learning how to rejoin society and
• 9:17
Speaker 6: give back to the community that's helped them. And again
• 9:21
Speaker 6: this all of our services are offered completely for free.
• 9:24
Speaker 6: We do not build insurance. We don't ask a single
• 9:26
Speaker 6: question when you walk through our door. As far as
• 9:28
Speaker 6: your financial state, you were able to walk in the door,
• 9:32
Speaker 6: no questions asked and receive those services. So events like
• 9:35
Speaker 6: this really allow us to be able to continue that work.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: That's what I was going to say. I could jump in.
• 9:39
Speaker 5: I was going to say that because when you say that,
• 9:41
Speaker 5: you know there's no cost for insurance or anything like that.
• 9:44
Speaker 5: It's got to be paid for somehow, and it's events
• 9:47
Speaker 5: like this that help pay for that. And you said
• 9:49
Speaker 5: that your Recovery Point is a statewide organization, Yes, sir, so.
• 9:53
Speaker 6: In addition to our facility here in Charleston, we do
• 9:56
Speaker 6: have facilities in Huntington, Parkersburg, and Bluefield as well. We
• 10:00
Speaker 6: also have a transportation service called Routes to Recovery that
• 10:03
Speaker 6: services the entire state of West Virginia with non emergency
• 10:06
Speaker 6: medical transportation. So we're trying to fill the gaps where
• 10:09
Speaker 6: we can and do the good work.
• 10:12
Speaker 7: We also have a behavioral health arm that offers counseling,
• 10:17
Speaker 7: and you know, our program is we really believe that
• 10:23
Speaker 7: to get into long term recovery, it's not a twenty
• 10:27
Speaker 7: eight day or thirty day thing. It's something that you
• 10:29
Speaker 7: have to when if you really understand the twelve steps.
• 10:32
Speaker 7: And I have a son in recovery, which is why
• 10:34
Speaker 7: I'm involved in this, a program very similar to recovery
• 10:40
Speaker 7: point save my son's life, There's absolutely no question about it.
• 10:44
Speaker 7: He is eight and a half years sober now. He
• 10:46
Speaker 7: will be at the concert and he has given me
• 10:49
  Speaker 7: his permission to.
• 10:52
  Speaker 3: Talk about this.
• 10:54
Speaker 7: And you know, one of the things that I hope
• 10:57
Speaker 7: this concert does is try to destigmatize addiction and alcoholism
• 11:04
Speaker 7: and substance use disorder.
• 11:07
  Speaker 3: David.
• 11:07
Speaker 7: It affects probably sixty five to seventy percent of the
• 11:11
Speaker 7: families in the United States of America. This disease does.
• 11:15
  Speaker 7: And it is a disease. It's a disease like cancer's
• 11:19
  Speaker 7: a disease. And I don't think a lot of people
• 11:22
Speaker 7: I screamed at my son for twenty years to stop drinking,
• 11:26
Speaker 7: and screaming doesn't work.
• 11:29
  Speaker 3: It doesn't.
• 11:29
Speaker 7: I didn't understand it until he went into recovery, and
• 11:32
Speaker 7: I learned through his program that pretty much all I
• 11:38
Speaker 7: was doing was driving him to drink more than I was.
• 11:42
Speaker 7: You know, it's a disease, and it's the recovery is
• 11:48
Speaker 7: very different than taking medicine. I mean, sometimes medicine does help,
• 11:52
Speaker 7: especially through the detox part of it, and there's certain
• 11:56
Speaker 7: kinds of addictions that you have to medically detox from. So,
• 12:01
Speaker 7: you know, people need to realize that this is not
• 12:07
Speaker 7: something you just Yeah, you make some choices, and you
• 12:10
Speaker 7: might make some choices with some bad choices that drive
• 12:13
Speaker 7: you down this road, but once it grabs you, it
• 12:15
Speaker 7: grabs you and you don't just decide tomorrow, well I
• 12:19
Speaker 7: think I'll just give it up. Maybe one or two
• 12:21
Speaker 7: people can but the fast.
• 12:22
Speaker 3: But the majority that it doesn't work that way exactly.
• 12:26
  Speaker 3: It doesn't.
• 12:27
Speaker 5: Uh, let's get back to the concert again. Is this
• 12:29
Speaker 5: going to be uh Saturday night? That's Clay Center. Where
• 12:32
Speaker 5: can people get tickets?
• 12:33
Speaker 6: So people can actually buy tickets to attend the event
• 12:36
Speaker 6: at the Claycenter dot org. If you cannot attend and
• 12:40
Speaker 6: would still like to contribute to the concert, we actually
• 12:43
Speaker 6: have ticket donations for our residents to be able to
• 12:46
Speaker 6: attend the concert. Those are available on Recovery Points website
• 12:50
Speaker 6: at Recovery Point WV dot org.
• 12:52
Speaker 5: All right, well, we wish you the best of luck
• 12:54
Speaker 5: with the concert, and again it's it's going to be
• 12:56
  Speaker 5: a great night, be a awesome opportunity for a Valentine's
• 13:00
Speaker 5: a date out a lot of great music. I mean,
• 13:04
Speaker 5: if you, I mean, it's great what you're doing, but
• 13:07
Speaker 5: just the music fan in you would be enough, I
• 13:10
Speaker 5: think to drive you there, let alone the other good
• 13:12
Speaker 5: stuff that's gonna come out of it. So it's kind
• 13:14
Speaker 5: of like twofold here. I mean, you're gonna be celebrating
• 13:16
Speaker 5: the music of John Prine, which I just said is
• 13:18
Speaker 5: one of my all time favorites. And you've got Johnning
• 13:20
Speaker 5: or the other John in this putting this thing together.
• 13:24
Speaker 5: And you've got miss j Rose, and you got all
• 13:26
Speaker 5: those other people. And I've got the poster posted on
• 13:28
Speaker 5: my social media that you can go when you can
• 13:30
Speaker 5: look at. It's gonna be a fantastic night of music
• 13:33
Speaker 5: and Charleston. It really really is for a great cause. Guys,

• 18:04
Speaker 5: We're going to talk about legislature and some of your
• 18:07
Speaker 5: initiatives there a little bit later on. But did I
• 18:10
Speaker 5: read this write a tuition freeze?
• 18:13
Speaker 14: That's correct, Dave. We are Board of Governors met last
• 18:16
Speaker 14: week and they approved a freeze of tuition and that
• 18:19
Speaker 14: is part of a initiative called the Yellow Jacket Pledge,
• 18:24
Speaker 14: where we are doubling down on our commitment to student access, affordability,
• 18:31
Speaker 14: and career readiness. We know that this is a dynamic
• 18:34
Speaker 14: environment that we find ourselves in. We know higher education
• 18:37
Speaker 14: must change, and we're leaning into that. When it comes
• 18:40
Speaker 14: to student access, we are saying that any student in
• 18:43
Speaker 14: West Virginia who graduates from West Virginia High School or
• 18:46
Speaker 14: from West Virginia Community Technical College, if that's a two
• 18:49
Speaker 14: point five or higher, they will be automatically admitted to
• 18:53
Speaker 14: our institution. We're also making that commitment to older students
• 18:57
Speaker 14: who want to come back and pursue their region Bachelors
• 19:00
Speaker 14: of Arts. We're saying, you can come to West Virginia
• 19:02
Speaker 14: State and we will make sure that your first semester
• 19:05
Speaker 14: of classes are at no cost. When it comes to affordability,
• 19:09
Speaker 14: as you said, we are freezing TU wishing to give
• 19:11
Speaker 14: students and parents more predictability about costs. We also have
• 19:15
Speaker 14: a free for eight program, which basically means that this
• 19:18
Speaker 14: if you are a in state student here were in
• 19:21
Speaker 14: West Virginia and you're pale eligible under the free for
• 19:24
Speaker 14: eight program, you can come to West Virginia State at
• 19:27
Speaker 14: basically no cost. Only thing you're responsible for is room
• 19:30
Speaker 14: and board. And when it comes to career readiness, we're
• 19:33
Speaker 14: making this pledge. We're saying that if after twelve months
• 19:37
Speaker 14: of looking for a job postgraduation, you still are unemployed,
• 19:42
Speaker 14: come back to see us and we will give you
• 19:44
Speaker 14: an entire year of education, additional education at no costs.
• 19:48
Speaker 14: Our commitment to making sure that West Virginia State is
• 19:51
Speaker 14: standing behind at students every step of the way.
• 19:55
  Speaker 3: That's almost like a.
• 19:58
Speaker 5: Guarantee or whatever that you'd hear, like, uh from from
• 20:01
Speaker 5: an attorney or something. You know, and one and one
• 20:04
Speaker 5: sponsors the show. You know, if you're not recovered, you
• 20:07
Speaker 5: pay no cost. So it's almost that kind of a
• 20:09
Speaker 5: marketing thing those you.
• 20:11
Speaker 14: Know it is, and you know we are saying through
• 20:15
Speaker 14: this pledge that we stand behind our students, and we
• 20:18
Speaker 14: stand behind the education that we provide our students. Again,
• 20:22
Speaker 14: we want to make sure that everyone has access. We
• 20:24
Speaker 14: want to make sure that higher education is affordable, and
• 20:27
Speaker 14: we want to make sure that you know again once
• 20:29
Speaker 14: you graduate, that you're going to be well positioned to
• 20:32
Speaker 14: get a good paying job. And if there are gaps,
• 20:35
Speaker 14: our commitment is to make sure that we're going to
• 20:37
Speaker 14: provide you additional education at no costs so you can
• 20:40
Speaker 14: feel those gaps and you can go out there and
• 20:42
Speaker 14: get that job that's going to make you successful.
• 20:44
  Speaker 3: Going for it.
• 20:45

Speaker 5: the agriculture lab. Do you guys get to break ground
• 21:18
Speaker 5: on back? And I think it was November, right.
• 21:19
Speaker 14: Yeah, we broke ground on that state of the art
• 21:22
Speaker 14: agricultural laboratory. As you know, our former Governor Justice now
• 21:27
Speaker 14: Senator Justice, along with the state legislature appropriated a fifty
• 21:32
Speaker 14: million dollars to build a new state of art agricultural
• 21:34
Speaker 14: laboratory on our campus. We have begun the work. We've
• 21:37
Speaker 14: begun the planning of building that incredible facility. Of course,
• 21:41
Speaker 14: us a joint partnership with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
• 21:45
Speaker 14: That facility will house laboratories for the Department of ag
• 21:49
Speaker 14: It will also house our new forthcoming Pretty School of Agriculture,
• 21:54
Speaker 14: Food and Natural Resources. And we were so grateful to
• 21:56
Speaker 14: have the Purty family step up and make a transform
• 22:00
Speaker 14: of gift to help us to drive forward that new
• 22:03
Speaker 14: School of Agriculture. And again, as I've said many times before,
• 22:06
Speaker 14: it's going to be a win win. This facility will
• 22:08
Speaker 14: be a winmen for West Virginia because again it will
• 22:10
Speaker 14: marry the expertise of a land grand institution in West
• 22:13
Speaker 14: Virginia State, along with the expertise of the West Virginia
• 22:16
  Speaker 14: Department of Agriculture.
• 22:17
Speaker 5: Talk about the Purty family and getting their involvement in
• 22:21
Speaker 5: this as you said, this is I mean, it's pretty
• 22:24
  Speaker 5: good stuff.
• 22:25
Speaker 14: It's incredible and the Party family, you know, West Virginia
• 22:28
Speaker 14: family who really came up from humble, humble beginnings and
• 22:35
Speaker 14: used the education that he received at West Virginia State
• 22:38
Speaker 14: and at West Virginia University to go on and to
• 22:40
Speaker 14: build incredible companies that have had a worldwide impact. His
• 22:45
Speaker 14: first company that Vial started was in agriculture, the largest
• 22:49
Speaker 14: agricultural data company in the country, and that is with
• 22:54
Speaker 14: really sparked his passion for agriculture. So he's been involved
• 22:57
Speaker 14: in West Virginia State through our Board of Visitors for
• 23:00
Speaker 14: a number of years and when you heard us talking
• 23:02
Speaker 14: about the School of Agriculture, it really ignited, reignited his
• 23:05
Speaker 14: passion for agriculture, and he stepped forward and made a
• 23:08
Speaker 14: transformative two point five million dollar commitment to West Virginia
• 23:12
Speaker 14: State to be the benefactor of our School of Actors.
• 23:16
Speaker 5: And I think this is really good stuff moving forward,
• 23:18
Speaker 5: and especially that partnership with the Department of Agriculture here
• 23:21
Speaker 5: in the state and Commissioner Liehart and the folks and
• 23:23
Speaker 5: the great things that they do there as well. It's
• 23:26
Speaker 5: a great partnership moving forward for the state and for
• 23:29
Speaker 5: future jobs and things of that nature.
• 23:31
Speaker 14: That's right, I mean, really, that's what this project is
• 23:33
Speaker 14: all about. It's all about creating that durable workforce pipeline
• 23:37
Speaker 14: that's going to help feed our agriculture sector. It's also
• 23:41
Speaker 14: about helping uspur innovation that's going to help move the
• 23:44
Speaker 14: agricultural sector forward, because we know that not just here
• 23:48
Speaker 14: in West Virginia, but across the world, food and security
• 23:52
Speaker 14: is one of our most pressing problems, and we believe
• 23:54
Speaker 14: in West Virginia State we can and will continue to
• 23:58
Speaker 14: be part of the solution of solving that challenge.
• 24:01
Speaker 5: One of the great things I think that's going on
• 24:03
Speaker 5: in the world of higher education, President Cage right now,
• 24:07
Speaker 5: and you know, I talk to you, I've talked to
• 24:08
Speaker 5: your counterpart to Marty Roth, and I talked to the
• 24:11
Speaker 5: folks at Bridge Valley and all these different and West
• 24:13
Speaker 5: Virginia University, Marshall, the Community Technical College. One of the
• 24:16
Speaker 5: great things that I love what's going on in higher
• 24:18
Speaker 5: education right now is that the model's changing, and you're
• 24:24
Speaker 5: listening to what the business people say they need, You're
• 24:27
Speaker 5: listening to what others say that they need, and then
• 24:31
Speaker 5: moving your programs around to meet the need of the
• 24:38
Speaker 5: demand out there. You know exactly what's needed. There's a
• 24:40
Speaker 5: lot of change going on in the world of higher
• 24:41
Speaker 5: education right now, positive change in my opinion.
• 24:44
Speaker 14: That's right. You're absolutely right, Dave. We know that in
• 24:47
Speaker 14: higher education we must change. And I actually pined an
• 24:49
Speaker 14: op ed and that the period in the gazette mail
• 24:52
Speaker 14: and the title was that higher education must change because
• 24:55
Speaker 14: we know that the landscape in which we're operating in
• 24:58
Speaker 14: has shifted dramatically. And at West Virginia State and at
• 25:01
Speaker 14: all institutions across this state, we have adopted a model
• 25:05
Speaker 14: where we are listening. We are asking our students, our parents, policymakers,
• 25:10
Speaker 14: and business what can we do as institutions of higher
• 25:14
Speaker 14: education to help solve the workforce challenges? What can we
• 25:18
Speaker 14: do to help make sure that we are training the
• 25:20
Speaker 14: next generation of leaders that are going to help to
• 25:23
Speaker 14: propel our state forward. That is what we have embraced
• 25:25
Speaker 14: at West Virginia State. And I can say that that
• 25:27
Speaker 14: is what all institutions in West Virginia have also embraced.
• 25:31
Speaker 5: Can we're talking with Eric Cage, the president of West
• 25:34
Speaker 5: Virginia State University, but Dave Allen Shell in five eighty
• 25:36
Speaker 5: Live is brought to you part by Morgan and Morgan,
• 25:37
Speaker 5: America's largest injury law firm. If you're injured, visit for
• 25:40
Speaker 5: the people dot com. All right, all the focus here
• 25:43
Speaker 5: in the capital city and around state of West Virginia, Pickleary,
• 25:46
Speaker 5: though in Charleston. Of the next few days is going
• 25:48
Speaker 5: to be the reconvening of the legislature. We have a
• 25:51
Speaker 5: new governor at the Helm, several new members of the Legislature,
• 25:56
Speaker 5: the entire Board of Public Works, with the exception of
• 25:58
Speaker 5: the Agriculture Commissioner that I mentioned and earlier commision of Leonhard,
• 26:01
Speaker 5: they've all changed. And I know that those of you
• 26:04
Speaker 5: in higher ed are always looking closely at the goings
• 26:08
Speaker 5: on of the legislature. Is there anything in particular that
• 26:10
Speaker 5: you want to share with us, a President Cage, about
• 26:13
Speaker 5: the legislative priorities, what you're looking at for West Virginia State.
• 26:16
Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, as you said, the legislature will gabble
• 26:20
Speaker 14: in today and I look forward to being there this
• 26:24
Speaker 14: evening for the Governor's State of the State address. I'll
• 26:27
Speaker 14: be sitting with Delegate Kathy Kraus, who happens to be
• 26:30
Speaker 14: a West Virginia State graduate. But we will be up
• 26:34
Speaker 14: there under the dome advocating for our state match of
• 26:38
Speaker 14: our federal lang Grant fund. That's something that we advocate
• 26:41
Speaker 14: for every year. Those that match is critically important. It's
• 26:45
Speaker 14: important because it allows us as a land grant institution
• 26:48
Speaker 14: to deliver the programming that we deliver to all fifty
• 26:52
Speaker 14: five counties here in the state of West Virginia, programming
• 26:54
Speaker 14: in erea such as agriculture, health care, STEM, so many
• 26:58
Speaker 14: other areas. So that funding is critically important. And of
• 27:01
Speaker 14: course it's a match. So if we don't secure the
• 27:05
Speaker 14: state match, then we leave federal money on the table,
• 27:07
Speaker 14: and none of us want to leave any money on
• 27:09
Speaker 14: the table. So we will be up there starting tonight
• 27:13
Speaker 14: and throughout the session advocating for our land Grant match,
• 27:17
Speaker 14: with our for our legislators, legislators, and with our our government.
• 27:21
Speaker 5: And I would think that that there are elected officials
• 27:24
Speaker 5: in West Virginia, and I know you try to have
• 27:27
Speaker 5: a great relationship with all of them.
• 27:29
Speaker 3: And I know that I know that you do.
• 27:30
Speaker 5: You mentioned delicate Kraus and in particularly you'll be sitting
• 27:32
Speaker 5: with her tonight. They also realize, I mean, at least
• 27:35
Speaker 5: I hope they do, that these changes that you that
• 27:38
Speaker 5: you spoke about in your op ed and the Gaza
• 27:40
Speaker 5: mail yesterday, that the that a lot of these changes
• 27:43
Speaker 5: are going to can't do it alone. You can't do
• 27:45
Speaker 5: it just with you, with with your donors. You're going
• 27:47
Speaker 5: to have to have the buy in of a lot
• 27:49
Speaker 5: of the folks under the Dome and Charleston to make
• 27:51
  Speaker 5: these things happen.
• 27:52
Speaker 14: That is correct, And my hope is that our legislators
• 27:55
Speaker 14: will continue their strong commitment toward education because because you're right,
• 27:59
Speaker 14: we're out there, you know, talking to donors, raising private
• 28:02
Speaker 14: dollars to try to help close the gaps. But we
• 28:05
Speaker 14: also need our partners in the state government and the
• 28:09
Speaker 14: federal government to also continue to be with us to
• 28:12
Speaker 14: help make sure that we have the resources needed to
• 28:15
Speaker 14: drive our missions forward. And of course driving our missions forward,
• 28:19
Speaker 14: of course, will help the state by producing the leaders
• 28:22
Speaker 14: who are going to help again propelled West Virginia.
• 28:24
Speaker 5: Ford, all right, Always a pleasure to have you on
• 28:26
Speaker 5: the show. Sir Eric Cage, president of West Virginia State University,
• 28:29

• 28:31

• 33:14
Speaker 5: back to our first guest this morning, text says alcoholism
• 33:17
Speaker 5: is not a disease. That is old school thinking and
• 33:20
Speaker 5: the latest science says it is a disorder. You know,
• 33:26
Speaker 5: I will say that as I become older in my life,
• 33:31
Speaker 5: I think all of us and I hope all of
• 33:32
Speaker 5: you do this. I hope that your thoughts start to
• 33:34
Speaker 5: evolve a little bit. And I have learned a lot
• 33:40
Speaker 5: in doing this show and listening to not only the
• 33:44
Speaker 5: guests that we have on the show, the experts in
• 33:48
Speaker 5: their respective fields, but I've also learned a lot from you,
• 33:54
Speaker 5: the listeners, the texters, the callers, so on and so forth.
• 33:58
Speaker 5: And a number one, let me just say, anything that
• 34:01
Speaker 5: gets people on the road to recovery, as the folks
• 34:04
Speaker 5: that Recovery Point are doing and so many other great
• 34:06
Speaker 5: organizations in the valley and throughout West Virginia, I am
• 34:09
Speaker 5: one hundred percent for it, absolutely, and I am uneducated
• 34:15
Speaker 5: as you could possibly imagine in this field, but I
• 34:20
Speaker 5: will say I have always been one that is said
• 34:22
Speaker 5: that it can be fifty to fifty that a lot
• 34:26
Speaker 5: of the things that people do start and I think
• 34:29
Speaker 5: that to Rory Isaac from Recovery Point that was on,
• 34:32
Speaker 5: I think he kind of made that point that it
• 34:36
Speaker 5: can become it, it can start as a choice.
• 34:39
Speaker 3: This is just my thinking.
• 34:39
Speaker 5: This is not scientifical by any stretch of the m
• 34:42
  Speaker 5: and I know that's not a word I just say
• 34:43
Speaker 5: for fun. My take has always been on that is
• 34:48
Speaker 5: that it can start out as a choice. You know,
• 34:52
Speaker 5: nobody told you to try that particular drug. However, it
• 34:55
Speaker 5: can eventually evolve into a disease, and these statistics sticks
• 35:01
Speaker 5: will bear out that there are very very very few
• 35:04
Speaker 5: people the overwhelming majority, that do not quit cold turkey
• 35:11
Speaker 5: anything that they have to have some sort of help,
• 35:15
Speaker 5: and in some cases it's not medically responsible for people
• 35:18
Speaker 5: to try that because a lot of issues have That's
• 35:20
Speaker 5: just kind of where where I am, but I do
• 35:22
Speaker 5: appreciate the texture stay of the state coming up tonight,
• 35:27
Speaker 5: we'll have coverage Metro News and on WCCHS as well.
• 35:31
Speaker 5: Of course, our team is already set up at the Capitol.
• 35:34
Speaker 5: I talked to It was actually at the Capitol yesterday.
• 35:37
Speaker 5: I'm gonna get into that a little bit later on.
• 35:38
Speaker 5: We will be broadcasting live, meaning talk line. I know
• 35:42
Speaker 5: that TJ is going to be there pretty much. He'll
• 35:44
Speaker 5: be there Tomorrow and Friday and then the normal routine.
• 35:47
Speaker 5: He'll be live on set, just as Hoppey used to be,
• 35:49
Speaker 5: but he'll be there.
• 35:50
Speaker 3: A little bit more.
• 35:51
Speaker 5: He's going to be there Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and
• 35:53
Speaker 5: also Dave Wilson will be coming down from Morgantown to
• 35:56
  Speaker 5: join him.
• 35:56
Speaker 3: On the case as on the case, on.
• 36:00
Speaker 5: The on the stage as well, Texas Dave evolving his
• 36:06
Speaker 5: heresy in the or in these parts, or maybe it
• 36:10
Speaker 5: could be hearsay. I'm not sure what little spelling error there.
• 36:14
Speaker 5: Million Niceley, who never ever makes spelling errors, is here?
• 36:18
Speaker 3: Are you a million?
• 36:19
Speaker 4: I'm good? Are you this boy?
• 36:20
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here, Appreciate you being here.
• 36:22
Speaker 4: Course, happy day one.
• 36:24
Speaker 3: Are you happy about it?
• 36:26
  Speaker 8: I am?
• 36:27
Speaker 4: I'm happy, nervous, a little stressed, but mostly happy. All right,
• 36:32
Speaker 4: it's our super Bowl, you.
• 36:33
Speaker 5: Know, it's our super And as I mentioned, I was
• 36:34
Speaker 5: over there yesterday just kind of helping out, trying to
• 36:38
Speaker 5: get the set ready and things.
• 36:39
  Speaker 4: That.
• 36:40
Speaker 5: Big shout out to the folks at AARP who will
• 36:42
Speaker 5: give me sponsoring our broadcast location. I know you're going
• 36:44
Speaker 5: to be drifting out of there from time to time
• 36:46
Speaker 5: yourself with with Wilson and Meadows over there. Brad mcelhanney
• 36:50
Speaker 5: will basically live over there. I'll be there from time
• 36:53
Speaker 5: to time as well. Let's talk about the governor's speech tonight, though,
• 36:56
Speaker 5: What do you what are you most looking forward to?
• 36:59
Speaker 4: Well, I mean it's just interesting to cover a new governor. Right,
• 37:03
Speaker 4: We've had a lot of justice State of the States,
• 37:05
Speaker 4: they had their own kind of folks. He feels yeah.
• 37:11
Speaker 4: And last year's was such a victory lab you know,
• 37:13
Speaker 4: as he was running for your Senate, and so I
• 37:15
Speaker 4: think it'll be interesting this year. Morrissey. Governor Morrissey has
• 37:18
Speaker 4: come in really strong right, a lot of priorities right
• 37:21
Speaker 4: out the gate, so I assume his speech for reflect that.
• 37:24
Speaker 4: So I'm just looking forward to a change, but I'm
• 37:28
Speaker 4: also interested to hear what more we will hear. He
• 37:30
Speaker 4: wants done quickly, because you know, so many executive orders
• 37:34
Speaker 4: out of the gate. He seems like he wants changed now,
• 37:37
Speaker 4: not the long game. So I think that's what I'm
• 37:39
Speaker 4: interested to hear. You know.
• 37:40
Speaker 5: It's it is interesting, Amelia, because I was at the
• 37:44
Speaker 5: capitals I mentioned yesterday, and one of the things about
• 37:48
Speaker 5: my role here is is that you know, I'm not
• 37:51
  Speaker 5: I'm not a reporter. I'm not a journalist. You're a journalist.
• 37:54
Speaker 5: Brad mcilhanney, Stephen Allen Adams are fine folks, you know,
• 37:57
Speaker 5: are journalists. I drift in from time to time, I'm
• 38:00
Speaker 5: during the session or I'll talk to people, you know,
• 38:02
Speaker 5: not necessarily interviewing them, but just talking to them.
• 38:05
Speaker 3: But I don't have to go write a story afterwards.
• 38:06
  Speaker 5: I can I can count, I can eavesdrop, and I
• 38:09
Speaker 5: can get some inside information, and sometimes I can say, well,
• 38:12
Speaker 5: I'm just gonna talk about this on the air, but
• 38:13
  Speaker 5: not mentioned who told Mere's I. Here's what I took
• 38:15
Speaker 5: away from yesterday. All right, So there for a couple
• 38:18
Speaker 5: hours again on the set and watching those guys work.
• 38:21
Speaker 3: Although I did carry.
• 38:22
Speaker 5: Some stuff, by the way, good job, let it be known,
• 38:24
Speaker 5: let it be show it.
• 38:25
Speaker 4: I do carry some more with the record. A lot
• 38:27
Speaker 4: of journalism is taking in gossip, but then we do
• 38:30
Speaker 4: have to report the back.
• 38:31
Speaker 5: But I was eavesdropping and having some off the record
• 38:33
Speaker 5: conversations with people yesterday, and I get the idea, Amelia,
• 38:37
Speaker 5: that this is going to be a rocky session.
• 38:40
Speaker 3: What do you say.
• 38:42
Speaker 4: It does feel? I don't know if I would go
• 38:45
Speaker 4: right to rocky, but not quite smooth sailing. Some of
• 38:49
Speaker 4: that is a lot of new people, particularly in the Senate,
• 38:51
Speaker 4: you know, all new leadership in the Senate. Also a
• 38:54
Speaker 4: lot of new people in the Senate, more than ten
• 38:57
Speaker 4: I believe, and many who have not served in public
• 39:00
Speaker 4: office before. Right Typically people serve in the House and
• 39:03
Speaker 4: they move up to the Senate usually not always, so
• 39:05
Speaker 4: there's that, and there just seems to be already some
• 39:12
Speaker 4: uh I don't want to say butting of heads, that's
• 39:15
Speaker 4: too strong, but just working with Morrissey figuring out, you know,
• 39:19
Speaker 4: the legislature has their place, Governor Morrissey's administration has their place.
• 39:24
Speaker 4: They're going to have to figure that out. And I
• 39:25
Speaker 4: think there's a little bit of maybe consternation growing as
• 39:29
Speaker 4: Governor Morrissey has come out pretty strong with some demands.
• 39:33
Speaker 4: And I think that's what your takeaway was, Well.
• 39:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think so. And I think that again,
• 39:39
Speaker 5: you're dealing with two totally different styles of governorship so
• 39:44
Speaker 5: to speak here, because you know, Jim Justice wasn't around
• 39:48
Speaker 5: a lot, he was away from the capitol. He seemed
• 39:51
Speaker 5: to be very disconnected a lot of times from legislators,
• 39:54
Speaker 5: but he would come in, as you said, and take
• 39:55
Speaker 5: the victory life from time to time.
• 39:57
Speaker 3: Look, it served him well.
• 39:58
Speaker 5: He was one of the most popular governors in the
• 40:00
Speaker 5: entire nation, you know, And I'm not It's just different.
• 40:03
Speaker 5: And anybody that knows Patrick Morrissey knows that Patrick Morrissey
• 40:06
Speaker 5: is very very hands on. He was out in front
• 40:09
Speaker 5: of the cameras when he was Attorney General, you know,
• 40:12
Speaker 5: and that's just kind of his style. I think one
• 40:15
Speaker 5: of the learning curves, and this is just me riffing here, Amelia,
• 40:19
Speaker 5: I think one of the learning curves for Patrick Morrissey
• 40:21
Speaker 5: is going to be when you are attorney general, when
• 40:25
Speaker 5: you are Secretary of State or any of these other offices,
• 40:28
Speaker 5: it's your name on the door. Now, you surround yourself
• 40:30
Speaker 5: by people that you can talk with and say, well,
• 40:33
Speaker 5: I think we should do this, and you generally speak
• 40:35
Speaker 5: and have people around you who'll say, well, I you know, Governor,
• 40:39
Speaker 5: Secretary of Attorney General, I don't think that this is
• 40:42
Speaker 5: a good idea, you need to do this, Okay, But
• 40:44
Speaker 5: at the end of the day it was still as
• 40:45
Speaker 5: ag it was still Patrick Morrissey's name on the door.
• 40:50
Speaker 5: It's a different dynamic when you are dealing with the
• 40:53
Speaker 5: governor in a relationship with the legislature, because the governor,
• 40:58
Speaker 5: whoever it is, can go in to blaze and saying,
• 41:00
Speaker 5: my god, this is what we're going to do, and
• 41:03
Speaker 5: you got one hundred people on one side and thirty
• 41:05
Speaker 5: some on the other side going yeah, maybe not so much.
• 41:08
  Speaker 15: So.
• 41:08
  Speaker 3: I think that's going to.
• 41:08
Speaker 5: Be a learning curve. In my opinion, that's going to
• 41:12
Speaker 5: be a learning curve, learning curve for Governor Mors.
• 41:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree. And you know, Speaker Hanshaw in the
• 41:17
Speaker 4: House is returning. He's been in his position for years.
• 41:20
Speaker 4: And he told me I just interviewed him for a
• 41:21
Speaker 4: story about education the other day. He said he and
• 41:24
Speaker 4: Morrisey are working well together. And I think, you know,
• 41:26
  Speaker 4: Hanshaw's a very measured, thoughtful.
• 41:29
Speaker 5: You can't work you can't work with with Hanshaw, I
• 41:31
Speaker 5: think there's something wrong with you because he's pretty easy.
• 41:33
Speaker 3: To get along with.
• 41:33
Speaker 4: And on the Senate side, Randy Smith, nice guy. That's
• 41:36
Speaker 4: the number one thing people say about Randy Nice, nice guy.
• 41:39
Speaker 4: Senate President Randy Smith. However, Randy has served in a
• 41:45
Speaker 4: legislature that was under an absentee governor, right, And so
• 41:49
Speaker 4: as you said, I mean, he not only is new
• 41:51
Speaker 4: to being Senate president, but he's going to be doing
• 41:54
Speaker 4: that with a governor who has a very strong vision
• 41:56
Speaker 4: for what kind of legislation in West Virginia he wants.
• 41:59
Speaker 4: And so that will be interesting to watch how that
• 42:02
  Speaker 4: plays out.
• 42:03
  Speaker 8: For sure.
• 42:03
Speaker 5: Indeed, I got a text here that says last night
• 42:06
Speaker 5: at the West Virginia GOP legislative kickoff dinner, there seemed
• 42:09
Speaker 5: to be a bit of devisive undertones among the lawmakers,
• 42:12
Speaker 5: especially between the governor and the legislature, complaints that Morrissey
• 42:16
Speaker 5: is coming in way too strong and inserting himself into
• 42:19
Speaker 5: a branch of government that is not his own.
• 42:21
Speaker 3: The person said, they also send some friction between the
• 42:23
  Speaker 3: House and Senate.
• 42:26
Speaker 4: I haven't sensed that friction, but yeah, I've been walking
• 42:30
Speaker 4: around the Capitol like you working, but also people stop you.
• 42:33
Speaker 4: I haven't sensed that friction. So we'll see on that.
• 42:35
Speaker 4: Can I just say, though, you know the House has
• 42:38
Speaker 4: a new committee process. Yeah, that requires bills to go
• 42:41
Speaker 4: through you know three is it three days I believe
• 42:43
Speaker 4: of readings in committee. I'm probably saying that wrong, forgive me,
• 42:46
Speaker 4: but you know it's going to lengthen the vetting of
• 42:49
Speaker 4: bills essentially, And something I have heard from senators is
• 42:54
Speaker 4: concern as we get further and further into session, what
• 42:57
Speaker 4: if my bills get held up in that new process.
• 43:00
Speaker 4: So I haven't sensed any friction between the two. But
• 43:03
Speaker 4: there's a lot of changes happen.
• 43:04
Speaker 5: A lot of and again we've not even heard from
• 43:06
Speaker 5: the governor yet. And I think the biggest thing that
• 43:08
Speaker 5: we are that most people, including the legislatures, will take
• 43:11
Speaker 5: a break and we'll I want to hold you over
• 43:13
Speaker 5: if you don't care heavy stay after the break. I
• 43:15
Speaker 5: think that there are those that are looking saying, you know,
• 43:19
Speaker 5: those that those are handle the money, saying, well, we
• 43:22
Speaker 5: don't know what the governor is going to propose. He's
• 43:24
Speaker 5: been very when I understand, very very close to the
• 43:26
Speaker 5: vest On and he's got one one image as we
• 43:30
Speaker 5: know of what the budget is, and others, you know,
• 43:33
Speaker 5: former governor now Sendator Justice Larry Pack and other people
• 43:36
Speaker 5: who said, well, that's not how I see it. So
• 43:38
Speaker 5: we're all going to be watching to see what he
• 43:40
Speaker 5: says tonight because they can't really get to work on
• 43:42
Speaker 5: what they need to do until they see what the
• 43:43
Speaker 5: governor has to do.
• 43:45
Speaker 4: Yes, and let's also note that there's a lot of
• 43:47
Speaker 4: changes happening at the federal level. So I have said,
• 43:51
Speaker 4: and many reporters we've been talking, I don't know how
• 43:53
Speaker 4: you put a budget together with so many question marks
• 43:57
Speaker 4: at the federal level of what wes for genuinely even
• 44:00
Speaker 4: received federally. So it's the budget. It sounds boring. I
• 44:04
Speaker 4: hate to say it, but it really is probably going
• 44:06
Speaker 4: to be the focal point of the session. And it's
• 44:08
Speaker 4: not boring because when you think about the programs that
• 44:12
Speaker 4: impact our communities. Whether that's a big push in the
• 44:15
Speaker 4: Senate this year to get behavioral specialists into schools to
• 44:19
Speaker 4: help children who are hurting teachers. Okay, that is a
• 44:23
Speaker 4: big issue in West Virginia. That costs money. So I
• 44:27
Speaker 4: know when I feel like when reporters say budget, people
• 44:29
Speaker 4: fall asleep and don't want to read our stories right now.
• 44:32
Speaker 4: But it has real trickle down effects for school funding,
• 44:36
Speaker 4: you know, health care funding, Medicaid funding programs that are
• 44:39
Speaker 4: essential to West Virginia. If the Department of Human Services
• 44:42
Speaker 4: needs three hundred million to run child welfare, how do
• 44:45
  Speaker 4: we fund that?
• 44:45
  Speaker 8: Right?
• 44:46
Speaker 4: So I hope that people will stay engaged even though
• 44:49
Speaker 4: I know the budget can sound boring, but I think
• 44:51
Speaker 4: that's going to be a big question mark and I
• 44:52
Speaker 4: will not be shocked if we see us come back
• 44:55
Speaker 4: in a special session to clean up budget stuff this year.

Speaker 5: good point because I think I am not one who
• 47:16
Speaker 5: thinks that we should ever have a one party system
• 47:18
Speaker 5: and which have somebody, uh one hundred percent in control.
• 47:22
Speaker 5: I think we do need to have There's a difference
• 47:25
Speaker 5: between having disagreements and being and you know, between it
• 47:29
Speaker 5: turning into we can't work together, forget you. I was
• 47:32
Speaker 5: going to say something else there, but I want to
• 47:33
Speaker 5: want to keep my job, forget you. There's a big
• 47:36
Speaker 5: difference there. You can have you can have disagreements as
• 47:39
Speaker 5: long as you keep it, you know, tempered to a
• 47:41
  Speaker 5: certain extent.
• 47:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think also they're bringing in different points
• 47:44
  Speaker 4: of view.
• 47:45
  Speaker 17: Right.
• 47:45
Speaker 4: They're elected by constituents, and so was Governor Morrissey. Right,
• 47:48
Speaker 4: But especially in the House, these people have very close
• 47:50
Speaker 4: connections to what their communities need and hopefully are listening to.
• 47:54
Speaker 5: Those And to your point earlier people come in a
• 47:57
Speaker 5: lot of times they're elected as a House and again
• 47:59
Speaker 5: it's kind of change a lot of we're seeing more
• 48:02
Speaker 5: and more people that are serving in government, which I
• 48:04
Speaker 5: don't think, by the way, is a necessarily bad thing.
• 48:06
Speaker 5: They didn't come up, they didn't serve as a county
• 48:08
Speaker 5: commissioner first, or an assessor or whatever, or the House
• 48:10
Speaker 5: and then the Senate in the natural progression. A lot
• 48:13
Speaker 5: of them are being elected by the people because they
• 48:16
Speaker 5: haven't been exact politicians. But there is a learning curve
• 48:19
Speaker 5: there as well, because they come in and they made
• 48:21
Speaker 5: these promises at the bean dinners and so on and
• 48:23
Speaker 5: so forth, and said the first thing I'm going to
• 48:25
Speaker 5: do is I'm going to do this, and you find
• 48:26
Speaker 5: out that nobody really cares what you think. As a freshman,
• 48:29
Speaker 5: you're still trying to find where the bathroom is right,
• 48:32
Speaker 5: and you're going to be a mid a mid amidventure

• 48:36
Speaker 4: It's funny you say that I have helped several new
• 48:40
Speaker 4: lawmakers find the restroom over the last few days.
• 48:43
Speaker 5: Well, speaking of which, that's a great transition to what
• 48:46
Speaker 5: I was going to say next. Speaking of restrooms, I
• 48:49
Speaker 5: am hearing early on that we're going to hear after this,
• 48:53
Speaker 5: after the speech to night, we're going to hear from
• 48:55
Speaker 5: some of those on the floor about transgender issues, and
• 48:58
Speaker 5: we're going to hear about vaccine issues and things of
• 49:02
  Speaker 5: that nature.
• 49:02
Speaker 3: Much to the dismay of this.
• 49:04
Speaker 5: Particular radio host who yesterday got called a chamber of
• 49:08
Speaker 5: commerce or a country club republican because I don't care
• 49:10
Speaker 5: about social issues like this.
• 49:12
Speaker 3: That's just me. I'll own that.
• 49:14
Speaker 5: But are you hearing the same thing that it's going
• 49:16
Speaker 5: to take up at least some maybe a lot of
• 49:19
  Speaker 5: time early on.
• 49:20
Speaker 4: So I haven't heard, we'll say, transgender related issues from
• 49:25
  Speaker 4: the legislature.
• 49:26
  Speaker 14: Now.
• 49:26
Speaker 4: I have heard to expect that in Governor Morrissey speech tonight.
• 49:30
Speaker 4: Haven't seen a copy of it, can't say, but he
• 49:32
Speaker 4: has said he wants some work done on codifying gender
• 49:37
Speaker 4: in our state law. So there was a bill last
• 49:39
Speaker 4: year called the Women's Bill of Rights. Not sure if
• 49:41
Speaker 4: that was the best name because it was about, you know, gender,
• 49:44
Speaker 4: but that would have codified in state law that you're
• 49:48
Speaker 4: anytime male or females in a state law or code,
• 49:51
Speaker 4: it's the sex you are assigned at birth, right. So
• 49:53
Speaker 4: I think we will hear something about that from Morsey.
• 49:56
Speaker 4: But on vaccinations, yes, absolutely have been told multiple times.
• 50:00
Speaker 4: Expect vaccination exemption legislation to kick off tomorrow.
• 50:04
Speaker 5: Headline in the city's newspaper this morning, anti VAXs mindset
• 50:09
Speaker 5: growing in West Virginia.
• 50:11
Speaker 3: That's the headline this morning.
• 50:12
  Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't it.
• 50:17
Speaker 4: Is, I guess, but I will say that Governor Morrissey's
• 50:20
Speaker 4: vaccine exemption plan the Health Department said, yes, it's growing,
• 50:24
Speaker 4: but still a relatively small amount of people requested religious exemption.
• 50:28
Speaker 4: So yes, it is growing, but it's I think you're
• 50:31
Speaker 4: still going to see strong opposition to those exemption bills
• 50:34
  Speaker 4: this year.
• 50:35
Speaker 5: But Dave Adlin Show and five Aniline brought to you

Speaker 5: a more serious note, I know you dropped the story
• 50:49
Speaker 5: this morning on school choice, and I know you're going
• 50:51
Speaker 5: to get into that much more detail with TJ and
• 50:54
Speaker 5: Northern Dave a little bit later on the show. But
• 50:57
Speaker 5: to school choice may be a big party. Can talk
• 51:00
Speaker 5: about this more with them, but it may be a
• 51:02
Speaker 5: big part of the legislature too.
• 51:03
Speaker 4: Yes, I think public education will be a big part
• 51:06
Speaker 4: of the discussion this year. Governor Morrissey is very all
• 51:10
Speaker 4: in on school choice, and so are a lot of
• 51:14
Speaker 4: Republicans And what the reason I wrote this story? And
• 51:18
Speaker 4: the story just kind of explores how we're coming back
• 51:21
Speaker 4: to session as several Republicans represent districts with school closures,
• 51:24
Speaker 4: and those closures are mostly driven by declining population, but
• 51:27
Speaker 4: they're also driven by students leaving for the School Education
• 51:30
Speaker 4: Savings Account program, the HUPE Scholarship. So that really struck me.
• 51:33
Speaker 4: I wanted to explore that because it's going to be,
• 51:36
Speaker 4: you know, put some of these lawmakers in a tough spot.
• 51:38
  Speaker 3: I'm sorry. TJ's new here.
• 51:40
Speaker 5: He didn't know he's supposed to turn his phone off
• 51:41
Speaker 5: when he comes to the studium. Sorry, I thought it
• 51:44
Speaker 5: was all right, West Virginia watch that's the place to
• 51:49

• 51:49
Speaker 3: And you'll be all over the session.

• 51:57
Speaker 5: All right, I'm there, DJ, Amelia, thanks a lot. I
