- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is your host, Adam Graham. If you have a comment,
- 0:39Speaker 1: email it to me Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
- 0:43Speaker 1: follow us on Twitter at Radio Detectives, and become one
- 0:47Speaker 1: of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com slash Radio Detectives.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Before we do get started, I want to encourage you
- 0:57Speaker 1: to pick up your copy of an Ounce of Prevention.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's my first ever detective story. It's available as an
- 1:04Speaker 1: audiobook through audible dot com or in the iTunes store,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and it's also available as an ebook through the Kindle Store.
- 1:11Speaker 1: If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can actually download and
- 1:14Speaker 1: read the book for free. For everyone else, it's ninety
- 1:18Speaker 1: nine cents. So pick up your copy of an Ounce
- 1:20Speaker 1: of Prevention. Well, now it's time for today's episode of
- 1:24Speaker 1: Nick Carter, and I'll apologize first that we do are
- 1:28Speaker 1: dealing with missing episodes and also that there are some
- 1:32Speaker 1: sound quality issues, particularly on the first episode we're going
- 1:37Speaker 1: to play. Neither of these can really be helped. We
- 1:40Speaker 1: do what we can about the sound quality, but this
- 1:43Speaker 1: is one of those serials and we had a few
- 1:45Speaker 1: during the Johnny Doller, where one episode would be missing,
- 1:49Speaker 1: in this case there are two. But I still think
- 1:53Speaker 1: that there's enough episodes in this story to enjoy it,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and so I hope you do. And I'm really glad
- 1:59Speaker 1: we have been able to play these just because these
- 2:02Speaker 1: weren't even available when we started playing Nick Carter. All right, Well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: from that, with that said, we have part three and
- 2:11Speaker 1: then Part six of The Accidental Bullet original air dates
- 2:15Speaker 1: June the fourteenth and June the nineteenth of nineteen forty four.
- 2:28Speaker 2: What's another It's the case for Nick Carter, Master Detective.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Yes, it's a case for who was famous of all manhunters,
- 2:34Speaker 3: the detective whose ability of solving crime is unequaled in
- 2:36Speaker 3: the history of detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Continuing the curious adventure.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Called The Accidental Bullet on Nick Carter and the Mystery
- 2:53Speaker 4: of the Murdered Dog.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Investigating the death of a watchdog belonging to Simon agnewick,
- 3:03Speaker 3: sencovers that the dog was killed by a bullet that
- 3:06Speaker 3: must have come from an old fashioned muscle loading pistol.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Then he learns that Danny Caswell, with a young playboy,
- 3:12Speaker 3: has been killed by a similar bullet in what looks
- 3:14Speaker 3: like an accident. Sensing some connection between the death of
- 3:17Speaker 3: the dog and the death of Danny Caswell, Nick with
- 3:20Speaker 3: Scuvey his assistant, goes to the fifty two Club, a
- 3:22Speaker 3: gambling house located close to Simon Agnew's residence, in search
- 3:26Speaker 3: of clues. They find the club deserted, but as they're
- 3:29Speaker 3: searching it, the floor suddenly opens beneath them.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Dick, look out, we're falling of a scovey. Were here?
- 3:42Speaker 2: I am? You are right? Yeah, yess sir? Oh gosh,
- 3:47Speaker 2: what happened? Said the floor cave in. I'd always just
- 3:50Speaker 2: fell of our twelve feet made a one point landing.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We're standing on a trapdoor, scuby. Somebody pull the lever
- 3:56Speaker 2: that opened it. Goosh, Dick, we were standing on the
- 3:58Speaker 2: tile to the fact of WANs tre door. But it
- 4:00Speaker 2: certainly caught off slice of pries on it. Yeah, but
- 4:04Speaker 2: now where are we? So dark? Are like the colors
- 4:06Speaker 2: that Dirk floris? Sometimes we had our flash lights in
- 4:10Speaker 2: the hands on a Dirk Flora. Sometimes we've had our
- 4:13Speaker 2: flash lights in the hands on it. No, I can't
- 4:15Speaker 2: seem to find mine, how about you? Uh? Yes, yes,
- 4:20Speaker 2: here it is? If it isn't broken. How good it works? Well?
- 4:27Speaker 2: It seemed to be in a cellar of some kind.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it's got a very big room, is it with
- 4:33Speaker 5: all those rocked walls?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, they look solid well as the doors can be.
- 4:40Speaker 2: The only door. Uh huh. Something tells me it's solid too.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It looks like it's solid though a flock is it?
- 4:48Speaker 6: Nick?
- 4:49Speaker 2: It seems to be barred on the other side, and
- 4:53Speaker 2: it at least an instinct take a battering ram to
- 4:57Speaker 2: knock that down. Stone walls and the door made out
- 4:59Speaker 2: of solid You think, how are we gonna get out?
- 5:02Speaker 2: I don't know you, but there's only one way to
- 5:03Speaker 2: find out. Come on, let's keep looking. Bill, he's the
- 5:15Speaker 2: trap door shots. Yeah, mister Kent, I just got it close.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Good then we caught them, Yes, and the.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Sake, I better leave them there because you're with I
- 5:25Speaker 7: think I know how to do it.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, what's your idea? Boys? You'll see go outside and
- 5:30Speaker 2: get Joe. We're gonna need his help. Yeah right, chest grapes.
- 5:36Speaker 7: They're stealing him in here, gonna take away sure too many?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah, talk him with my gut. Tell okay, chef, okay,
- 5:47Speaker 2: shut the cottage down the hill. But you mean they
- 5:50Speaker 2: used to live there.
- 5:51Speaker 7: I mean the pretty soon he's not gonna live. He'd
- 5:54Speaker 7: form the police him up too. Yeah, the boss ain't
- 5:56Speaker 7: going up. He's getting well organized. When we're through, nobody's
- 5:59Speaker 7: gonna know they're they're gonna look like accidents, you understand,
- 6:03Speaker 7: but they better.
- 6:04Speaker 2: You know what's good for you. And don't you worry.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You'll be ragnue to us.
- 6:08Speaker 7: But you've got to take care of Nick Carter and
- 6:10Speaker 7: his assistant.
- 6:11Speaker 3: And I told Jaki should have let me get rid
- 6:13Speaker 3: of COTTERR this morning when we had a chance.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Well, they're gonna have your chance now. But I give
- 6:17Speaker 2: plenty to know what brought him back here tonight.
- 6:20Speaker 8: Do you suppose Cutter knows didn't keep.
- 6:22Speaker 7: Guessing Danny Caswell was killed here last night.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:27Speaker 7: But when he spotted him, he was standing up those
- 6:29Speaker 7: brackets where we got the during pistol drop out, just
- 6:32Speaker 7: as if he figured exactly what happened.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but he didn't have any clues. It doesn't matter
- 6:37Speaker 2: what he knows. He'll assume. Be out of the way, Joe.
- 6:41Speaker 2: We'll see to that.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Okay, you can get it, dope. And here's what I
- 6:44Speaker 7: want you to do. First, fine cotter's cards, probably hidden
- 6:48Speaker 7: somewhere down the road. Then drive to all Man Connies
- 6:50Speaker 7: and get a half a dozen of those special knockout
- 6:52Speaker 7: gas bombs.
- 6:53Speaker 2: He makes up half a dozen knock got bonds, right.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Then come back here, open the trap door a couple
- 6:59Speaker 7: of inches and throw bombs down.
- 7:01Speaker 2: They're not cotting his man out in the side of
- 7:03Speaker 2: a minute. Okay, mister the cans.
- 7:06Speaker 7: Now, when your sugar unconscious, get him out of the cellar,
- 7:09Speaker 7: put them in carter his car, drive him move to
- 7:11Speaker 7: the river. Then put them in my front seat and
- 7:13Speaker 7: let the car roll into the river. When they're found,
- 7:18Speaker 7: look like an accident.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Say it's a smart idea and it'll work all right,
- 7:23Speaker 2: and that or to satisfy the bus. Yeah, all right,
- 7:27Speaker 2: but he still wants to know just what went on
- 7:29Speaker 2: here last night? You know, Philip Man's feel.
- 7:31Speaker 7: A kid who was with cas Well, he's the boss's
- 7:34Speaker 7: nephew and I know, but he won't say anything.
- 7:36Speaker 2: He's too frank. Now I'll get going, all right, Say, boys,
- 7:40Speaker 2: what are they gonna do about agnew here? He's a
- 7:43Speaker 2: pretty near gun.
- 7:45Speaker 7: You'll take him back to his cottage and make it
- 7:47Speaker 7: look at if he died there the first you gotta
- 7:50Speaker 7: finish up here. Now, load all those old guns, roll
- 7:53Speaker 7: the mantle into the car, and out all possible fingerprints.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Then we'll take care of agnew Oh gosh, Nick, it's
- 8:15Speaker 2: no use. We've been looking for a way out of
- 8:17Speaker 2: here for half an hour and there just isn't any
- 8:20Speaker 2: and never get a hope, scubby. Come on, let's keep
- 8:22Speaker 2: trying the wall as we may find the weakness.
- 8:24Speaker 9: Yes, hey, Nick, Yes, I wonder if we could do
- 8:32Speaker 9: anything with this whole board here against the wall.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That'scubby, but it's too light to use as a battering ram. Yeah. Besides,
- 8:40Speaker 2: it's all rotten, Nick, Hey, look what is it? Look
- 8:43Speaker 2: at all the little white ants that were underneath that board.
- 8:46Speaker 2: What ants, Scubby? Those aren't ants? That termites? Well, what's
- 8:51Speaker 2: the difference That plenty termites eat wood, and that's the
- 8:54Speaker 2: termites canna turn a heavy tinder into a mere rotting
- 8:57Speaker 2: shell and the moon Well what other? What other? That door, scuby,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it's wood and it's touching the earth floor so that
- 9:03Speaker 2: the termites can reach it. But that door is solid.
- 9:05Speaker 2: We've already found that out. I know it's gobby, but
- 9:07Speaker 2: we were hammering on it. The points several feet above the ground.
- 9:09Speaker 2: That's right close to the ground. And see what happens. Hey,
- 9:15Speaker 2: what is it? It'scubby. I think I've hit a rutting spot. Yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 2: not in the door, but in the prame that holds it.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I only had something to hammer at the weak spot with.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Wait a minute, maybe I can kick a hold of it. Nick,
- 9:29Speaker 2: you're kicking right through the frame.
- 9:31Speaker 8: Scummy myself?
- 9:33Speaker 2: Good, kind of close to the ground. Neck. You've done it?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Hold up beg enough for me to put my arm
- 9:42Speaker 2: through hescubby handed the boat. You were just looking at it.
- 9:45Speaker 8: Hey, here it is, but be careful.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It's pretty rotten. I think it'll do. And step aside
- 9:49Speaker 2: with this so I can lie down here on the floor. Sure,
- 9:52Speaker 2: but through this hole there and this is just guesswork.
- 9:57Speaker 2: But my poking upwards with it, I may be able
- 10:00Speaker 2: to knock loose the bar that's holding the door shut.
- 10:03Speaker 2: You need me, Nick, there's nothing you can do. I
- 10:07Speaker 2: think I've got it.
- 10:08Speaker 8: Hold up that board it breaks worse, Sulk.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I gotta feel a heavy bar of some kind lifting
- 10:12Speaker 2: a little out of its socking. Nick, Yes, Now I
- 10:20Speaker 2: want to see if the door will open. Stand back, Sketty, Okay,
- 10:23Speaker 2: maybe your gun ready and maybe somebody outside. I'm ready here, good,
- 10:27Speaker 2: Here it goes. It's open. Yes, there's no one outside
- 10:35Speaker 2: there risk a looking by flashlight? No, no one there.
- 10:40Speaker 2: All right, Scotty, come on, we're going back upstairs. Follow
- 10:43Speaker 2: me and keep your gun handy. Nick, there's nobody here. No,
- 11:00Speaker 2: apparently the house is empty. Well that's funny. Hey, maybe
- 11:05Speaker 2: they were just going to leave us down in that
- 11:06Speaker 2: room to starve. After all, I hardly believe that's Kebby.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I guess is that they're gone to make preparations for
- 11:12Speaker 2: getting rid of us, and that they'll be back. Well,
- 11:14Speaker 2: what are you going to do now? Nick? Wait for them,
- 11:17Speaker 2: try to trap them. Yes, Kelly, it'll be risky, but
- 11:19Speaker 2: we haven't time to stand for any help. Go I'm
- 11:21Speaker 2: came it. I'd certainly like a chance whoever dropped us
- 11:24Speaker 2: through that crap door. So ill while we're waiting, I
- 11:27Speaker 2: suppose we spend a minute or two looking around. Do
- 11:30Speaker 2: you think it's safe? Nick? We can't a flashlights well covered,
- 11:33Speaker 2: I think so. Okay, say, hm, here's something funny. All
- 11:39Speaker 2: those old guns that were up over the fireplace are gone. Yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 2: that makes me more convinced than ever. And the darling
- 11:47Speaker 2: pistols found beside Danny Kaswell's body came from that collection
- 11:51Speaker 2: certainly looks like it. What is it, Nick? If he
- 11:54Speaker 2: found something? Yes, something was lying here in the rug.
- 11:58Speaker 2: A little whistle? A whistle? What do you suppose it means?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Me and Simon Agnew has been here? Scubby? That whistle
- 12:03Speaker 2: is the key to his front door. A whistle is
- 12:05Speaker 2: a key to a front door. I don't folly you.
- 12:07Speaker 2: I haven't time to explain, and we can't wait here
- 12:08Speaker 2: for ten to come back either. We've got to go
- 12:10Speaker 2: see if anything's happened to wagn Now, come on, does
- 12:21Speaker 2: this Agnes cottage? Nick? Yes, Scubby, so dark and silently,
- 12:25Speaker 2: he must not be home, But I wanna find out. Now.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna show you how whistle can be a door
- 12:29Speaker 2: key too. Watch, gosh, the door is open, Yes, open
- 12:36Speaker 2: by an electric mechanism that responds to the sound of
- 12:38Speaker 2: the whistle, one of Agnew's inventions. My name Scuby, right, Nick? Oh?
- 12:42Speaker 2: Shall I close the door? Yes, I'll try to find
- 12:44Speaker 2: the light switch. Yeah. Ah here Nick, Look, there's someone
- 12:49Speaker 2: lying there on the floor at the foot of the stairs. Yes,
- 12:52Speaker 2: Scubby Simon Agnew, Oh he wants to fallen downstairs? Why?
- 12:57Speaker 6: Nick?
- 12:59Speaker 2: He's dead?
- 13:11Speaker 3: Nick and Skin they have escaped from the death trap
- 13:13Speaker 3: in which they were caught.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But apparently Nick is as far.
- 13:16Speaker 3: As ever from solving the mystery of the strange case,
- 13:19Speaker 3: which began with the seeming murder of Sun and Agnew's watchdog.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Now Sun Agnu himself is dead.
- 13:25Speaker 2: How will Nick track down the killers? Listen tomorrow? What's
- 13:46Speaker 2: the matter? What is It's a case for Nick Carter
- 13:49Speaker 2: Master Detectives.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Yes, it's a case for that most famous of all manhunters,
- 13:52Speaker 6: the detective whose ability at solving crime is unequal in
- 13:55Speaker 6: the history of detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective. Concluding
- 14:04Speaker 6: the furious adventure called.
- 14:06Speaker 4: The Accidental Bullet on Nick Carter and the Mystery of
- 14:11Speaker 4: the Murdered Dog.
- 14:17Speaker 6: Investigating the death of a watchdog belonging to Simon Agnew,
- 14:21Speaker 6: eccentric inventor, Nick Carter discovers that the dog was accidentally
- 14:24Speaker 6: killed when Howard Kent, a gambler, murdered millionaire playboy Danny
- 14:28Speaker 6: Caswell at the Fifty two Clubs. Nick is certain that Kent,
- 14:31Speaker 6: manager of the club, was only working for a higher up,
- 14:35Speaker 6: the mysterious head of a local gambling racket, and he
- 14:38Speaker 6: feels sure that when Kent is caught, he will reveal
- 14:40Speaker 6: the name of the man behind him. But before Kent confined,
- 14:44Speaker 6: he found Nick and Lieutenant Riley get word from Sergeant
- 14:47Speaker 6: Jamison of the State Police that Nick's car, stolen by Kent,
- 14:50Speaker 6: has been found. It has been hauled out of a
- 14:52Speaker 6: river by state police and in it are the dead
- 14:55Speaker 6: bodies of Howard Canton, his assistant, Nick, Riley and Scubby hurried.
- 14:59Speaker 2: To the scene. There, he arms the cutter. There's your car,
- 15:04Speaker 2: just as we dragged it out of the river this morning.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Where are the bodies that we're in A sergeant right
- 15:07Speaker 2: here under the canvas? Yeah, mm shoo, that's seem eh,
- 15:12Speaker 2: that's that's how it canted at assistance all right. We
- 15:14Speaker 2: were both shot through the heart thirty two mm. Who
- 15:18Speaker 2: do you suppose you wanted Kent out of the way?
- 15:20Speaker 2: He can only have been the man behind them, the
- 15:22Speaker 2: head of the gambling meaning they're fraid we might catch
- 15:25Speaker 2: Kent's and don't get a lead back. Well, hey, he
- 15:28Speaker 2: doesn't stop it anything, does he? H The murderings counterh
- 15:32Speaker 2: the gambling racket's gotten pretty bad. He's last few months.
- 15:35Speaker 2: You canab the man who's running it. You sh'll be
- 15:37Speaker 2: doing us a favor. Why that's what's that a thing?
- 15:40Speaker 2: M What is it? Nick? Hearing us? Pebble lotted in
- 15:44Speaker 2: the tread of the rear tire. Look, yeah, well that
- 15:48Speaker 2: probably came to the bed of the river. Now it's cuting.
- 15:51Speaker 2: If if we're a river pebble, the edges will be
- 15:53Speaker 2: rounded by the action of the water. But on this
- 15:55Speaker 2: one the edges are quite shot. And here's another thing.
- 15:58Speaker 2: This pebble is blue flint, a type of rock sometimes
- 16:01Speaker 2: crushed and used to cover driveways. Hey wait a minute, look,
- 16:05Speaker 2: I reiber seeing blue gravel on the driveway only the
- 16:07Speaker 2: slow we drove out to Morton Westle's house. I thought
- 16:10Speaker 2: you remember savvy Martin Western? Are sure, now, Nick? You
- 16:13Speaker 2: don't think he's tight up with this case?
- 16:15Speaker 6: To you?
- 16:15Speaker 2: I'm not so sure, Isley. Oh, I'm afraid you'll run
- 16:17Speaker 2: into trouble if you started working on that line. Mister
- 16:19Speaker 2: Carter Western is a pretty important man in this Cabby. Besides,
- 16:23Speaker 2: he's always been against Camby. I know that driving, and
- 16:25Speaker 2: that might adjust the clever way of a earning suspicion
- 16:28Speaker 2: will now, ye, you can't go and accuse him of
- 16:30Speaker 2: anything just on the evidence of Wonder's a pebble. Now. Now,
- 16:32Speaker 2: I don't intend to Raby, But the more I think
- 16:36Speaker 2: how calm Western was when I've talked to him about
- 16:38Speaker 2: his nephew's death, the more I want to pay him
- 16:40Speaker 2: another visit. Only this time I'm going to make a
- 16:43Speaker 2: few preparations first.
- 16:44Speaker 10: Oh, gosh, Patsy, what do you supposed to make?
- 16:55Speaker 2: Has been doing? Lable? Asked Wis. He won't even let
- 16:58Speaker 2: me in the talk. Truth. He's cabby. He's making something.
- 17:01Speaker 2: When I offered to help, he said, no, thanks. Whatever
- 17:04Speaker 2: it is, he doesn't want us to know about it. Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 2: i'd somebody talking about me make you scared me. I
- 17:09Speaker 2: didn't need you opened the lad door. Gosh, Nick, where
- 17:11Speaker 2: did you come from? Why? I haven't standing here for
- 17:13Speaker 2: sever a second listening to a very interesting conversation. MM.
- 17:16Speaker 2: They say eavesdroppers never hear any good of them, said,
- 17:18Speaker 2: I wasn't trying to eave drop aty. I was just
- 17:20Speaker 2: seeing if I could still move quietly enough to do
- 17:23Speaker 2: a little burglar the burglary, what do you mean you
- 17:26Speaker 2: up to now? Man, I'd rather not say fatty in
- 17:28Speaker 2: case you're asked if be honest, you say you don't
- 17:30Speaker 2: know anything about it. Yeah, I suppose that means you
- 17:32Speaker 2: aren't going to let me go with you. I'm afraid not.
- 17:34Speaker 2: But what about me? Whatever you're up to, you're going
- 17:37Speaker 2: to need some help, aren't you. We might end up
- 17:39Speaker 2: in jail, Scuby. Well, some of my best friends are
- 17:41Speaker 2: in jail. You're all right if you want to take
- 17:43Speaker 2: the risk, I'll be glad to have you come along.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Oh well, jail couldn't any worse than some of the
- 17:46Speaker 2: spots we've been in together next the seller of the
- 17:49Speaker 2: fifty two club, for instance. But we thought we'd been
- 17:51Speaker 2: left there to starve. In that case, we might have
- 17:52Speaker 2: got get started. It's almost midnight, high time for good
- 17:55Speaker 2: Burgers to be at work.
- 17:57Speaker 8: M oh Nick, Now I know where we're going. No,
- 18:08Speaker 8: just come in sure.
- 18:09Speaker 2: We're heading for Morton West this place, aren't we right?
- 18:11Speaker 2: That's it over there, you can just see it in
- 18:13Speaker 2: the moonlight. You mean you're going to burgle his house? Mick?
- 18:16Speaker 2: You're going to have a try at its Cobby. You've
- 18:18Speaker 2: got to get evidence against him. Somehow I'll stop here. Okay,
- 18:21Speaker 2: full off the road under those trees, right Nick, Well
- 18:26Speaker 2: here we are, No what do we do next? For
- 18:29Speaker 2: the next half hour? I want you to stay here
- 18:31Speaker 2: and wait for me. Wait for you, Oh Nick, now
- 18:33Speaker 2: have a heart. After all the power's Coby's sorry. It's
- 18:35Speaker 2: going to be difficult enough for me to get into
- 18:36Speaker 2: Western's house alone. You'll be helping me more by waiting here,
- 18:39Speaker 2: Ready to make a fast get away for any alarm. Well, okay,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I'm gonna slip across these fields and approach the house
- 18:46Speaker 2: from the rear. I don't think I'll have too much
- 18:48Speaker 2: trouble opening those French windows and o this in the
- 18:50Speaker 2: Western's library this morning. But what's that suitcase you brought
- 18:52Speaker 2: along for you? Well, I might be going to use
- 18:55Speaker 2: it to carry any incriminating documents go by. Oh I see,
- 18:58Speaker 2: or I might not. All right, Skevey, this won't take
- 19:01Speaker 2: any longer's half hour? I hope see you later. Hey,
- 19:13Speaker 2: is that unique get cock started? Okay? I kept going.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Crop of dogs started barking at that leaf. Well, I
- 19:20Speaker 2: can't have any Lutch bricks, not much. I found Western's
- 19:23Speaker 2: safe and got it open. But Western's apparently are too
- 19:25Speaker 2: cagy to keep written records till you took all that
- 19:27Speaker 2: risk for nothing, not entirely more. Do you move? You'll
- 19:29Speaker 2: find out later, s Kevy A right, And now we've
- 19:31Speaker 2: got to get back to town and get some sleep,
- 19:33Speaker 2: because tomorrow morning we're going to pay another visit to
- 19:35Speaker 2: Morton Western. Another visit, yes, this time by appointment, since
- 19:39Speaker 2: we can't find any evidence. We'll see if we can't
- 19:41Speaker 2: make him give us something. Mister Weston, this is my assistant,
- 19:54Speaker 2: Kevery Wilson. Oh, how do you do? How do you do?
- 19:56Speaker 2: Won't you gentlemen to down? Uh? Tell him? Mister Carter,
- 20:00Speaker 2: do you happy luck when he's down? The man who
- 20:01Speaker 2: killed my nephew? Not yet, but I hope to put
- 20:04Speaker 2: my hands on him shortly. I'm glad to hear that. However,
- 20:07Speaker 2: we have located Howard Kent and his assistant, the two
- 20:09Speaker 2: men who killed Danny Caswell. They're dead, yes, But who
- 20:14Speaker 2: killed in, mister Copper, The same person who was really
- 20:16Speaker 2: responsible for the death of your nephew, The man behind Kent,
- 20:20Speaker 2: no doubt, the head of the gambling ring. Are you
- 20:22Speaker 2: sure he was working for someone? Mister Connor, I am,
- 20:25Speaker 2: and I think I know who it was who, mister Carper.
- 20:28Speaker 2: To cut it short, Western, you where a very interesting conclusion,
- 20:34Speaker 2: and may I ask how you reach it? You may?
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yesterday when I told you your nephew Philip Mansfield had
- 20:39Speaker 2: been shot, you were quite calm about it because you
- 20:41Speaker 2: knew it already, didn't you? One of your men shot him. Well,
- 20:45Speaker 2: I'm afraid you're just getting am I man? Listen, when
- 20:48Speaker 2: I made my appointment with your nephew, he promised to
- 20:50Speaker 2: keep his door locked and had met no one until
- 20:52Speaker 2: I arrived.
- 20:53Speaker 6: So and what of it?
- 20:55Speaker 2: But he did admit someone Lethago killed him. That means
- 20:59Speaker 2: the killer must have been sent by someone whose name
- 21:01Speaker 2: would cause Philip to let him in. I'm the only
- 21:03Speaker 2: person in this city that he would trust, a you
- 21:05Speaker 2: his uncle. And it's a very interesting deduction. Oh go on, please,
- 21:10Speaker 2: somehow Philip must have let slip. He was going to
- 21:12Speaker 2: tell me everything, and your thug shot him by see well,
- 21:18Speaker 2: as a matter of fact, that's perfectly true. What you
- 21:22Speaker 2: mean you admitted? Why not now? Six still? Both of him?
- 21:25Speaker 2: I might have had you covered for the last five minutes.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Wipe Carter, Make him move over. Make two men with
- 21:31Speaker 2: guns are covering us from the doorway, so I see Skenvey.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Apparently Weston was too smart for us. When you were
- 21:36Speaker 2: a secretary phone to say you was coming, I had
- 21:38Speaker 2: decided it was time to put you out of the way. Cotton,
- 21:41Speaker 2: you've been entirely too persistent in this case. Uh, Jake,
- 21:43Speaker 2: keepman covers from behind. Joe, you cover them from the side,
- 21:46Speaker 2: my boy.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Don't worry.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Boys, we get this situation and make it looks like
- 21:49Speaker 2: they've got us. I'm afraid it does, Key, but we're
- 21:53Speaker 2: not out of the way yet. To see this gun, corpress,
- 21:58Speaker 2: I was going to dispose of it, but first it's
- 22:01Speaker 2: going to dispose of you. I suppose that's the gun
- 22:03Speaker 2: you killed Howard Kenton as assistant with them exactly, that's
- 22:07Speaker 2: the r gentile desire the gun an acid. Then the
- 22:09Speaker 2: police can search forever without being able to place the
- 22:11Speaker 2: slugs they'll find in your bodies if they find your bodies. Yes,
- 22:18Speaker 2: v he does. We've come too close to one covering
- 22:21Speaker 2: the mask of respectability he's been hinding behind all these years. Exactly, Copper. Yeah,
- 22:26Speaker 2: the best to suspect that I control all the gambling
- 22:28Speaker 2: in this county. Oh, you must go now, Western, you
- 22:32Speaker 2: admit you're the real owner of the fifty two club,
- 22:34Speaker 2: do you? Why not? And then telling Danny has Well
- 22:36Speaker 2: Howard Kent was acting for you. I suppose the law
- 22:39Speaker 2: would look at it that way, and you, in turn
- 22:41Speaker 2: killed Kenton as assistant, had their bodies put in my
- 22:43Speaker 2: car in order to run to the river. That's all
- 22:45Speaker 2: so right. And by the way, Jones, I told you
- 22:48Speaker 2: to pick a spot where the water was deep. Gosh,
- 22:52Speaker 2: you do a good job bearing Cottlin Wilkeson and I
- 22:54Speaker 2: love a look your blender. Why you can count on me?
- 22:56Speaker 2: I know an abandoned gravel choiry would on never be
- 22:59Speaker 2: find No, I think it's time to put an end
- 23:02Speaker 2: to talking. Go take this gun a moment, Leston, Yes,
- 23:07Speaker 2: he told you do anything more. Take a look at
- 23:10Speaker 2: the windows there? Why what? Oh? J H got that
- 23:14Speaker 2: gun there? Why are you here? Don't you sick?
- 23:18Speaker 8: Western slip? Yes, but keep Tom scummy?
- 23:19Speaker 2: All right, you two dogs, put up your hand, Sarjan,
- 23:21Speaker 2: look out, i'd won. She'll ke you up.
- 23:25Speaker 8: It's better trap minute.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Take him out of the car, right, Sarger, All right,
- 23:29Speaker 2: you'll come along here. You're Pilot's gonna wait for the.
- 23:31Speaker 9: Mars, Nicky, you all right, Dolly naked, Sargeant Jamison and
- 23:35Speaker 9: Riley for the whole squad of state cops.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Yes, Keppy, I have been expecting that you're all right. Yes, Riley,
- 23:40Speaker 2: a good timing. Another minute and you've been too late.
- 23:43Speaker 2: We followed your instructions, said the got miss Kata.
- 23:45Speaker 8: We gave you just five minutes, then crashed.
- 23:46Speaker 2: In your instruction. Nicky Moon planned all this I did.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I said that if we couldn't find any evidence, we'd
- 23:52Speaker 2: have to make Western give us some. So I tricked
- 23:54Speaker 2: him into doing it. Oh how is he ted? Wow?
- 23:57Speaker 2: He lives, mister Tata to be tried and electric cuted. O, Sergeant,
- 24:00Speaker 2: take a look in that filing cabinet over the bay.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Why did take the phone recorder on here? Right one?
- 24:07Speaker 2: I planned last night? Servant, you will find Western prole
- 24:10Speaker 2: admission recorded at it. Glory be, nick I see the
- 24:14Speaker 2: very smart work. I'll say it was. And whoever made
- 24:17Speaker 2: that dictaphone is a genius.
- 24:19Speaker 8: I never saw one so compact.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Friend of mine, so I'm an agnomator. Nor at least
- 24:23Speaker 2: they made the original. That's one I made after examining
- 24:26Speaker 2: his He that's what you were making in your lab yesterday, Nick, Yes,
- 24:30Speaker 2: Kuby and I had it in that suitcase you were
- 24:32Speaker 2: curious about last night when we came out here. Kept
- 24:34Speaker 2: it safely because if you'd known about it, you might
- 24:36Speaker 2: not have been able to act natural this morning.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Who I'll say, I wouldn't find though we're going to
- 24:40Speaker 5: be rescued by a bunch of state cops. I had
- 24:42Speaker 5: kept treading around to look for them, Genick, I hate
- 24:45Speaker 5: to admitted this for a while, or I was really
- 24:46Speaker 5: scared about this.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Case as a murdered dog was going to wind up
- 24:50Speaker 2: by being the case of too dead detective. You mean, Nick,
- 25:02Speaker 2: you're trick him into putting everywhere to the sensation that walky, Yes, passy.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Now you're up to date in every detail. I haven't
- 25:07Speaker 2: left out a thing. Oh, starting with a dead watch dog.
- 25:10Speaker 2: You wound up by papping ahead of a gaming racket.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Told her I thought would be an interesting experience to
- 25:14Speaker 2: investigate the murder of a dog, didn't I? Well, it was,
- 25:17Speaker 2: yare a little too wish to see. If he asked
- 25:18Speaker 2: me and Simon Agne regains consciousness, I think he'd pleased
- 25:22Speaker 2: to learn that not only did he start us on
- 25:23Speaker 2: the track, of that gang, but that the actual that
- 25:25Speaker 2: wound up the case too. And now without that recording
- 25:27Speaker 2: device he invented, I never would have been able to
- 25:29Speaker 2: pain anything on Western That's not me, and I'll patchy
- 25:32Speaker 2: for the next couple of days. I'm plawning on you
- 25:35Speaker 2: not to let me be disturbed, because I'm not going
- 25:37Speaker 2: to do anything but loaf for a while. Truth is,
- 25:40Speaker 2: now that we've wound up the case of Agnes's murdered
