- 0:00Well, today's a special Sunday because, as you know, we are
- 0:03setting apart this service to recognize and celebrate God's
- 0:06faithfulness to us as a church family.
- 0:09And I want to let you know that taking the time to dedicate a
- 0:12Sunday to turn our attention to that and reflect on the
- 0:15beginnings of this ministry and how the Lord has guided us step
- 0:19by step over the years is not just an excuse to add another
- 0:23event to our calendars. More than that, it is an
- 0:27occasion for us to worship because the Bible tells us that
- 0:33when a community, people come for heartfelt, intentional
- 0:37adoration for what God has done, that is worship.
- 0:42But Thanksgiving is not limited to a service.
- 0:44It's not limited to a celebration.
- 0:46The possibility of glorifying God in that attitude and that
- 0:50act has been granted to each of us as individuals.
- 0:55Private gratitude, heartfelt individual Thanksgiving.
- 1:01And so I want to take this day where we are obviously thanking
- 1:05the Lord as a body to instill and to strengthen that
- 1:10conviction in our hearts to be a thankful people.
- 1:16And so that the celebration and the joy that we are tasting
- 1:19today would join us and go with us for the long haul leaving
- 1:24this place this evening. And so I began earlier this week
- 1:28to just think about the Scriptures, the verses, the
- 1:31examples of Thanksgiving. And strangely, it was this verse
- 1:36that was brought to my attention.
- 1:37You don't have to turn there. You know it very well where Paul
- 1:40commands the Philippian church in Philippians 25.
- 1:43Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.
- 1:49Now you might be wondering, OK, that's a wonderful verse, but
- 1:51what does that have to do with gratitude?
- 1:54Well, here's how you can translate Paul's command there
- 1:56by the Spirit. Think like Jesus thinks.
- 2:01Think like Jesus thinks. And then it dawned on me, when
- 2:05you read the Gospels, you don't only find the Lord preaching,
- 2:10delivering, healing, serving, abstaining, over all, obeying
- 2:15the Father. If you read carefully, you will
- 2:18find the Lord Jesus Christ thanking the Father.
- 2:25And there are actually 4 distinct occasions where we find
- 2:29the Son of God expressing gratitude to God.
- 2:35And we're going to look at those four occasions in a moment here.
- 2:38But I want to tell you upfront what the goal of this message
- 2:41is. And this is where I'm going to
- 2:42ask you to turn to the Epistle to the Colossians in chapter 2.
- 2:46Consider with me two verses about why we need to focus a
- 2:52message on Thanksgiving. Colossians chapter 2 beginning
- 2:56in verse 6. The scripture says Therefore as
- 3:02you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and
- 3:08built up in Him, and established in the faith, just as you were
- 3:14taught. 3 very important words abounding in Thanksgiving.
- 3:22Don't just be thankful. I want you to abound in
- 3:27Thanksgiving. Do you know what it means to
- 3:29abound in something? Do you know when something is
- 3:31abounding? The original word here is to
- 3:33overflow, to not even just meet a certain measure for it to
- 3:38spill over what one might consider a standard overflow in
- 3:44Thanksgiving. So Paul is talking about the
- 3:48lifestyle of a Christian that doesn't just express
- 3:51appreciation here and there. Now he's talking about a way
- 3:56that our faith can connect to certain truths, and those truths
- 4:01feed the heart to the point that it becomes swollen and enlarged
- 4:07and even overflowing with this constant awareness of the
- 4:12goodness of God that then naturally expresses itself in
- 4:17Thanksgiving. See, Paul is not saying abound
- 4:20in Thanksgiving as a way to force Christians to just act in
- 4:24a thankful way. That's never, that's never the
- 4:27goal of any command in the Scripture.
- 4:30What he's saying here instead is that you should turn your
- 4:33attention on certain realities and revelations that will then
- 4:37result in this. And yes, like any spiritual
- 4:40discipline, there is a level of training and exercise and
- 4:43intentionality, but there is also this promise that the
- 4:47Spirit is able to carry us in it.
- 4:50So understand this. Listen, the thing that should
- 4:52mark us as believers in the realm of gratitude is that we
- 4:55should be abounding in it. And I wasn't planning to say
- 5:02this until earlier this morning came to my mind because I'm
- 5:06concerned that with a message on Thanksgiving and looking at
- 5:09different reasons why we should be grateful to God that we would
- 5:14hear that and the response at the end of the service would be
- 5:17all right, thanks brother. I'll be a little bit more
- 5:19positive this week than I was last week.
- 5:23Thanksgiving is much more serious than that.
- 5:28Implementing it, understanding it, when you actually look
- 5:30carefully in the Scriptures, there's much more at stake of
- 5:33being a thankful people. It's just not a matter of you
- 5:36being a little bit more chippy on a Monday has different
- 5:41factors at play that I think most Christians don't even
- 5:45realize. Let me give you an example.
- 5:48Do you know that the scriptures describe Thanksgiving as a light
- 5:52to the soul that will keep your heart from growing dark?
- 6:00Listen, a lack of gratitude is like leaving a city gate wide
- 6:06open, leaving darkness to enter more easily.
- 6:11And once it's in, it will become the breeding ground for
- 6:15uninvited vices and sins to take over.
- 6:19You might think that's an exaggeration, and I'm here to
- 6:22tell you this is not me, this is the scripture.
- 6:24So you're in the New Testament, me in the book of Romans chapter
- 6:261, and look up Paul's words there in verse 21 of Romans one.
- 6:31Notice how he describes a people who are ensnared by a variety of
- 6:38sins. Romans 121 For although they
- 6:44knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him.
- 6:52But they became futile in their thinking, And here it is, and
- 6:55they're foolish. Hearts were darkened.
- 6:58What led to their hearts being darkened?
- 7:00A lack of gratitude, among other things.
- 7:04So you see, there's something about thankfulness that protects
- 7:08you. And in order for us to be kept
- 7:13from a darkening taking place, a blackness blanketing our souls,
- 7:18Thanksgiving is the repellent. It is the guard.
- 7:26It is a shield. Because look what Paul describes
- 7:30in the same context as the ugly consequences of a heart that is
- 7:33not filled with ongoing thanks to God, among other things.
- 7:36Look at verse 29. You're there in Romans one.
- 7:38Look at verse 29. They the same people who did not
- 7:42honour God, who give thanks to them.
- 7:43They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil,
- 7:49covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder,
- 7:54strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers,
- 7:59haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of
- 8:04evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless,
- 8:10ruthless. Do you see the connection and
- 8:15the train of thought? These vicious qualities become
- 8:18more possible when your heart is less aware and willing to
- 8:23express Thanksgiving to God. In other words, if you want to
- 8:29avoid being filled with all manner of unrighteousness, your
- 8:32heart needs to abound in Thanksgiving.
- 8:36Think about it. It's much more difficult to lust
- 8:41when you're abounding at Thanksgiving.
- 8:43Yeah, it's a lot harder to go out there and commit adultery
- 8:45when you're grateful for your spouse.
- 8:48Despite all the difficulties and challenges.
- 8:50If you're grateful, if you, if you can see the gift, if you can
- 8:52recognize God's Providence in that person, it's a lot more
- 8:55hard to go out there and think that you're going to find
- 8:57something better. It's a lot more difficult to
- 9:00become covetousness when you're grateful for what God's
- 9:03Providence and his perfect leadership has been granted you.
- 9:06It's a lot more difficult to crave something that doesn't
- 9:08belong to you. It's a lot more challenging to
- 9:12slice up somebody's reputation with slander and gossip when you
- 9:16are willing to recognize the good in them and the blessings
- 9:21that God has brought to you through them.
- 9:23Do you see the wisdom of Thanksgiving?
- 9:25It's not a matter of you and I just being happier.
- 9:28It's needed for effective spiritual warfare.
- 9:32I don't think people teach that when it comes to spiritual
- 9:34warfare. When's the last time I ever
- 9:36heard? Be thankful if you want your
- 9:38heart to be strong against sin, But I'm here to tell you it, and
- 9:43I want to fuel our hearts today in the place of gratitude by
- 9:47looking at our ultimate example in the Lord Jesus Christ and
- 9:50considering 4 separate occasions where the Gospels tell us that
- 9:54He said thank you, thank you the Lord Jesus #1 gave thanks for
- 10:03God's immense grace. Let's turn to the first
- 10:05scripture in Luke chapter 10, verse 21, Luke 1021.
- 10:19Lord, train our hearts to be thankful today.
- 10:22It says here in that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit
- 10:26and said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that
- 10:31you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding
- 10:34and revealed them to little children.
- 10:36Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will in all of the
- 10:40gospel accounts. You want to know something
- 10:42remarkable? This is the only place where
- 10:43we're explicitly told that Jesus Christ rejoiced.
- 10:48Not that he didn't express jubilation in other places,
- 10:50surely he did. But this is the only place in
- 10:53all of the Gospel accounts where we are explicitly told that
- 10:57Jesus rejoiced. And it wasn't just a natural
- 10:59joy, it was a joy that was supernaturally inspired, that it
- 11:03sprung from the innermost part of his being because he rejoiced
- 11:06in the Holy Spirit. This means many important
- 11:09things, many things, one of which is the evidence of the
- 11:13Spirit's work in your life and mind.
- 11:16He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, which tells me one of the
- 11:19clearest signs that the Holy Spirit is working in a
- 11:21Christian's heart is that they desire to give thanks.
- 11:28How do we know that? Because we told again, he
- 11:29rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and the first words that come out of
- 11:32Jesus mouth is what I thank you. I thank you Father, Lord of
- 11:39heaven and earth. So if you're a person here who
- 11:42should be, we all should be seeking the continuous infilling
- 11:46of the Holy Spirit. I can guarantee you one thing
- 11:49based on the Scripture that you will find yourself growing and
- 11:54longing and yearning to express gratitude to God, and you'll
- 11:58even find yourself spontaneously doing it.
- 12:01So this is an encouragement. Why is it encouragement?
- 12:03Because Thanksgiving is a work of the Holy Spirit.
- 12:06He inspires that desire. He makes it a lifestyle.
- 12:09The more we depend on him and long for Him to harness our
- 12:13hearts and our tongues and our thinking.
- 12:15Here's Jesus rejoicing in the Holy Spirit, and the first thing
- 12:17that comes out of His mouth is I thank you.
- 12:20Many people come up with strange ideas of the manifestations of
- 12:23the Spirit, and the Bible is very plain and clear about them.
- 12:26I don't think it's often brought up that if the Holy Spirit
- 12:29really moves in you and me, then you're going to be moved to give
- 12:33thanks. That's what it says.
- 12:37He's our helper. The Lord has granted us this
- 12:40gift to guide us in all matters and including this.
- 12:42Can I point this out? Notice how Jesus addresses God.
- 12:46He addresses God as Father while simultaneously honoring him with
- 12:49the highest title that you can ascribe to anybody with majesty
- 12:54and power. He says you are the Lord of
- 12:55heaven and earth. What do I take from that?
- 12:58Well, you know, you have some Christians who see God as
- 13:00Father, but they don't see him as King.
- 13:05And you have some Christians who see him as King, all sovereign,
- 13:08but not as an intimate, loving Father.
- 13:11But here's Jesus filled with the Holy Spirit, and he says, I
- 13:14thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth.
- 13:18Do you see how the Holy Spirit helps us in everything, not just
- 13:20in how you thank God, but in how you view God?
- 13:26But what was it that Jesus was thankful for at this moment?
- 13:29Look again at this verse. He says that you have hidden
- 13:32these things from the wise and understanding and reveal them to
- 13:35little children. What are these things?
- 13:40What is he talking about? Well, as usual, context provides
- 13:45clarity. When did the Lord Jesus rejoice
- 13:47in the Holy Spirit? Look back at the beginning of
- 13:49verse 21 in that same hour. So something took place recently
- 13:55that served as a catalyst for Him to outburst with this prayer
- 13:59of thanks. And all you have to do is read
- 14:00the preceding verses to realize what he's Speaking of.
- 14:04So look back here and look at verse 17 of Luke 10 and you'll
- 14:06see what he's talking about when He says these things.
- 14:09The 72 returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons
- 14:13are subject to us in your name. And he said to them, I saw Satan
- 14:17fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you
- 14:21authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the
- 14:24power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
- 14:27Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this that the spirits are
- 14:30subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in
- 14:34heaven. Ah, there it is.
- 14:37So these things that Jesus said were hidden to some yet revealed
- 14:41to others include the empowerment of His disciples,
- 14:45their experience of the authority of His name, divine
- 14:49protection from the evil 1 and their names being written in
- 14:53heaven. And when the Lord saw the 72
- 14:56disciples relishing in those realities, he could not help but
- 15:00turn to the Father and say Thank you, Father, that you are
- 15:04willing to unleash these graces to little children.
- 15:10In other words, what Jesus is saying is thank you Father, for
- 15:14being willing to give such blessings to those who are the
- 15:18least deserving. You know, you don't have to do
- 15:22much investigation or studies to look at how the world treats
- 15:27people. And it's common knowledge that
- 15:31those who are wealthy and those who are intelligent and those
- 15:34who are beautiful and attractive tend to get more respect than
- 15:38others. But that's not how God's Kingdom
- 15:42operates. God reserves his rewards not
- 15:45necessarily to the powerful and to the wise, but to those who
- 15:49operate in childlike faith characterized by dependency and
- 15:54humility. In fact, what he means by this
- 15:58is that those who are boastful right when he says these things
- 16:00are hidden from the wise and understanding.
- 16:02What he means by that is that those who are boastful and
- 16:04reliant on their strength and their thinking, they are barred
- 16:09from such blessings. But God has opened his arms to
- 16:12those who acknowledge their weakness and their ignorance.
- 16:16So what is Jesus ultimately really giving thanks to God for?
- 16:19God's grace. And I wonder if as followers of
- 16:25Jesus, we have ever taken the personal time to to thank God
- 16:30that when he redeems sinners and that when he recruits servants,
- 16:34he does so with boundless grace because Jesus does.
- 16:38Can I ask you something? I want, I want this to be really
- 16:41practical here. When was the last time not in a
- 16:45service? Not because the worship team or
- 16:46the praise team or the preacher told you to?
- 16:48When was the last time you just on your own have paused and
- 16:53meditated that there is a final day coming where you will stand
- 16:57before God and the record of your sin will be pulled out with
- 17:02100% accuracy and what's on that record will determine your
- 17:08eternal fate? When was the last time that you
- 17:12breathe out a thanks because on your record, because of your
- 17:17faith, will be stamped boldly, forgiven?
- 17:24Not because of you being part of a superior race, not because you
- 17:28passed an exam for eternity, or that you impress God with your
- 17:32amount of sacrifices, but simply because you trusted in the Lord
- 17:35Jesus Christ? May we never come to a point in
- 17:38our faith where the good news becomes old news.
- 17:43Beyond that, when's the last time have I thank God that when
- 17:48He uses people, he's willing to use the foolish things according
- 17:52to the world, the weak things, things that are despised, even
- 17:55the things that are not, so that they would become something so
- 17:59that no man may boast. When that means that means that
- 18:01we all qualify to be used by God.
- 18:05I have no reason to live besides being used by God.
- 18:07Honestly, to be with Christ is better.
- 18:11And like Paul, I, I wrestle because Paul says I want to go
- 18:16be with Christ, but the only thing that I got going for me is
- 18:18staying here and bearing fruit for his Kingdom.
- 18:21I don't ever have to worry or fear that there is something
- 18:26outside of my control that will limit me from being used by the
- 18:29Lord. That's what we're here to do
- 18:31today, to really recognize that God has used this church for his
- 18:35glory and nobody can take credit for it.
- 18:38Nobody. The first instance that we look
- 18:41together here is that Jesus gave thanks to the Father for his
- 18:44boundless grace. But here's the second place.
- 18:47Turn with me to John chapter 6 #2 The Lord Jesus gave thanks
- 18:53for physical needs being met. We see the Lord doing this at
- 18:58both the feeding of the 5000 and the feeding of the 4000, but we
- 19:01can merge them in the same thought.
- 19:03Now I know that these miracles of provision are very familiar
- 19:06to us, but I want us to consider carefully John's perspective on
- 19:10the feeding of the 5000, because we're going to learn something
- 19:13about the what and the when of the Lord's Thanksgiving in this
- 19:15manner. Look at John 6 beginning in
- 19:17verse 9. There is a boy here who has five
- 19:21barley loaves and two fish. But what are they for?
- 19:24So many Jesus said, had the people sit down.
- 19:28Now there was much grass in the place, so the men sat down about
- 19:325000 in number. Jesus then took the loaves, and
- 19:36when he had given thanks, there it is.
- 19:40When he had given thanks, He distributed them to those who
- 19:44were seated, so also the fish as much as they wanted.
- 19:50I want you to look at what Jesus gave thanks to God for.
- 19:54And when he gave thanks for the what is clear, right?
- 19:58Jesus took the loaves from the little boy that he donated, and
- 20:02he had given thanks for those loaves.
- 20:05But what are 5 loaves for 12 grown men, let alone 5000?
- 20:12And those are just men. Then you have their wives and
- 20:14their children. What are you?
- 20:16This is more of an opportunity to worry than to worship 5
- 20:20loaves. So here you are.
- 20:23You have a need. We need a we need to feed a few
- 20:261000 people. Anybody want to make a donation?
- 20:28And the only donation that came in was 5 pieces of bread.
- 20:35That's it. That's all we can cough up here.
- 20:38That's not what the Lord does. He takes the bread.
- 20:42He gives thanks. The average person would panic,
- 20:46but we're considering the mind of Christ here.
- 20:48Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus.
- 20:53Jesus Christ truly gave thanks to God because He had this
- 20:57awareness of God's perfect wisdom manifesting in His
- 21:01perfect provision. You know, Thanksgiving is not
- 21:06always about responding to seeing what you desire to come
- 21:09to pass. We reserve our Thanksgiving for
- 21:12that right. We have these goals and these
- 21:14longings, and we have these expectations.
- 21:16And only when those things transpire do we say God is
- 21:19faithful. Look what He did.
- 21:20He answered exactly what I was looking for, exactly what I laid
- 21:23out before him. God came through.
- 21:25You should rejoice when your prayers are answered.
- 21:27But Thanksgiving should not be kept solely for those
- 21:30testimonies. It should equally be offered as
- 21:35a declaration of trust and contentment in God's gradual
- 21:40leading. That's what Jesus does here.
- 21:44You know, Matthew Henry, the great English Bible scholar, was
- 21:48reported to have been robbed by thieves at some point in his
- 21:52life. And many of us have benefited
- 21:55from Matthew Henry's writings. They're available online for
- 21:57free. One of the greatest scholars in
- 21:59church history. But they found an entry in his
- 22:02diary of that fearful occasion when he was robbed.
- 22:06And let me quote and read to you what he wrote in his diary.
- 22:09Quote Matthew Henry says let me be thankful right there.
- 22:14I'm like what do you mean let me be thankful you had your purse
- 22:17taken from you? No, he says let me be thankful
- 22:191st that I was never robbed before. 2nd although they took
- 22:25my purse so they didn't take my life.
- 22:27Third, although they took my all, it was not much.
- 22:31This is my favorite. 1/4 Let me be thankful because it was I who
- 22:35was robbed and not I who was doing the robbing.
- 22:42You see, the strength of your Thanksgiving is very much
- 22:44dependent on the accuracy of your perception of who God is.
- 22:48And the more comfortable and the more firmly you grasp the
- 22:51character of God, the nature of God, the promises of God, the
- 22:55better you and I are able to sincerely walk in a place where
- 22:58we can give Thanksgiving. And it will be an aroma to the
- 23:03Lord, and it will be a fragrance before men.
- 23:05And that's why Paul could say something like give thanks in
- 23:09all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
- 23:13for you. First Thessalonians 518 which
- 23:17leads me to the when? When did Jesus give thanks?
- 23:20He took the bread. And when he had given thanks,
- 23:24people might think that he took the bread, he multiplied and
- 23:26gave it. And then he gave thanks for the
- 23:28miracle. He gave thanks before the
- 23:29miracle. And we see here that this is a
- 23:35principle for us, that God's worthiness of Thanksgiving
- 23:39should be granted even before what we hope comes to pass.
- 23:46And how fitting is that example for us as a church?
- 23:50Do we have a need for a bigger place?
- 23:53Yes. If you don't know it, just come
- 23:54downstairs after the service. You'll feel it a little bit.
- 23:58We do. But what are you going to do?
- 24:00Wait to give our songs of praise and thanks until God comes
- 24:04through for us? No, that's not what I see in my
- 24:08Jesus. I consider us being in this
- 24:12physical place a miracle. I don't doubt that for a moment.
- 24:15I don't. But I also like to consider this
- 24:17place in our situation as 5 loaves in our situation and
- 24:21circumstances. 2 fishes that were provided through the
- 24:25selflessness of another church body called Church of Our Savior
- 24:29who extended and donated their love to us.
- 24:32And here we are. We are waiting for God to do
- 24:34more, but we also are, by way of example, charged to give thanks
- 24:40that Providence has placed this in our hands.
- 24:44He deserves glory for what he's done in these past three years.
- 24:50It's my genuine hope that when you and I go home tonight, you
- 24:54will go home with a renewed sense of purpose and strength to
- 24:57be grateful for what God placed over your head.
- 25:04For the kind of car that He allowed you to drive, For the
- 25:07kind of clothes that He afforded you.
- 25:11For the things that are in your cupboards.
- 25:13For the meal, every meal that He sets before you as a continuous
- 25:19acknowledgement of His perfect leadership in your life.
- 25:22Do you might have dreams and desires and hopes?
- 25:24Absolutely. Will they be realized
- 25:25immediately? That's not how God works.
- 25:27But He's still worthy of thanks. You know, we're trying to do
- 25:31this in our home from time to time.
- 25:34I'll look up my wife it just random times of the day and I'll
- 25:37say love. Tell me three things you're
- 25:38thankful for. And we can do this all the time.
- 25:43Sometimes we do it while we're talking in bed.
- 25:45Sometimes we're in the kitchen cleaning things up.
- 25:46And I'll say, tell me three things you're thankful for.
- 25:48And she'll say things she'll tell me, OK, what are you
- 25:50thankful for? And I'll say some things.
- 25:53It's impossible to do something like that and be in a bad mood
- 25:56after unless you're just doing it mindlessly.
- 26:00And in that little practice, I'm telling you, conversations pop
- 26:03up. And so now we're switching it up
- 26:04a little bit, OK, Not the obvious things, you know, like
- 26:06family, one another and stuff. Tell me other things that you're
- 26:09thankful for. And then you get more specific.
- 26:12And then now you're, you're, you're broadening your
- 26:14understanding of how God is blessing you beyond what he, he
- 26:19does plain and clear before your sight.
- 26:26Jesus expressed thanks for how God met his needs step by step.
- 26:35Let's follow him in that. Let's go to the Third Point,
- 26:41John Chapter 11. The Lord Jesus gave thanks for
- 26:47his access in prayer. This is the testimony, the
- 26:54miracle of the raising of Lazarus from the dead in John
- 26:5711, verse 41, as he's ready to call out Lazarus, His name.
- 27:03And as many have noted before, if Jesus did not call out
- 27:05Lazarus his name, everybody would have raised from the dead
- 27:08of that grave site. But notice what happens before.
- 27:11This moved me so tremendously, right?
- 27:14He says here in verse 41. So they took away the stone, and
- 27:16Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that
- 27:22you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me,
- 27:26but I said this on account of the people standing around, that
- 27:30they may believe that you sent me.
- 27:35Read carefully. Look again what he says Thanks
- 27:37for, Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
- 27:44So through Jesus's words, you know what I gained from this?
- 27:47That Jesus believed that prayer was a gift.
- 27:52And the sooner you and I believe that about prayer, the sooner we
- 27:56will understand prayer, something we get to do, and
- 27:59that's something we have to do. Now here's what moved me.
- 28:05If Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God while on earth, took the
- 28:10time to give thanks to the Father for having this kind of
- 28:15channel to him, how much more IA mere creature susceptible to
- 28:21inconsistencies and failures. Give thanks to God that that
- 28:30throne room of His and that courtyard of His is always
- 28:36available to me 24/7. Here's what I'm trying to get
- 28:40across. Jesus shows us that we shouldn't
- 28:43only be thankful in prayer, we should be thankful for prayer.
- 28:49I thank you that you have heard me.
- 28:53Now this is fascinating because it shows that Lazarus's miracle
- 28:58was the result of prayer. Notice what he says.
- 29:01I thank you that you have heard me.
- 29:02Past tense meaning that at some point undisclosed to us, Jesus
- 29:07Christ came before the Father and acquired his wisdom and his
- 29:10guidance about what to do with Lazarus case.
- 29:13And at some point in secret, the Father directed him, directed
- 29:19him about the timing of when to go to the tomb and how to do it.
- 29:22Everything was supplied by the Father to the Son through
- 29:27prayer, and that teaches me what what prayer is to the Lord
- 29:31Jesus. At least.
- 29:32That it was His source of power, that it was the means for his
- 29:37fellowship with the Father, that it was the channel of guidance
- 29:40that he utilized day by day, moment by moment.
- 29:45Yes, Christ was unique in many ways, but these blessings are no
- 29:49less available to us in prayer. One of the most convicting
- 29:55examples and I love to use illustrations from the Bible.
- 29:58One of my most admired individuals in the Scriptures.
- 30:03Not because of his name. Trust me, if he was named
- 30:05somebody else, I would still say the same.
- 30:06Daniel. OK, Daniel was a man of prayer
- 30:13and one of my favorite stories there is in chapter 6 when a
- 30:16decree went out that it was illegal to pray to anybody
- 30:18except the king. You know what Daniel does?
- 30:23We're told that at the moment he heard about that document being
- 30:26signed, he went home, got on his knees, open the window, prayed
- 30:31three times a day like nothing had happened.
- 30:33You know what that tells me? That Daniel rather have died,
- 30:41did not pray for a month. What do you know about prayer?
- 30:47What have you experienced in prayer?
- 30:49Where you, without any hesitation said to yourself, I'd
- 30:54rather die than not use this gift called prayer.
- 30:59And it makes sense. You read Daniel chapter 1 to
- 31:01chapter 6 and you see what prayer has done in this man's
- 31:04life. You read it after chapter 6.
- 31:05You see how prayer provided all these experiences and these
- 31:08revelations and these provisions.
- 31:10So to Daniel, he thought, to not pray is not to live at least
- 31:15abundantly, at least to the fullest.
- 31:18Yeah, many people are going about their day without prayer.
- 31:21But all the heights that you are missing because you don't see it
- 31:25the way you're supposed to see it.
- 31:29And I can spend, which I will not do on the pulpit.
- 31:31I can use the next 30 minutes to just give testimony after
- 31:35testimony about how God has come through by no other way but
- 31:41through prayer in such a way that if I had not prayed, I
- 31:46should have no reason to believe that he would have come through.
- 31:50Jesus says I thank you, Father, that you have heard me.
- 31:56And I always say this. Forgive me if I'm repeating
- 31:57myself, but we're creatures of repetition.
- 31:59Apart from salvation, there is no greater spiritual thrill than
- 32:03to know that God in heaven hears my prayers and when he actually
- 32:06answers them. What did the psalmist say?
- 32:09I love the Lord because He has heard my plea and has answered
- 32:13my cry. Therefore, I will call upon them
- 32:17all the days of my life. When you actually see a prayer
- 32:20answered in a way that it can't be brushed off as coincidence
- 32:24or, you know, I think this would have happened even if I didn't
- 32:26pray. No, no, like real prayer being
- 32:28answered, you'll never be the same.
- 32:31You can't. And I'm afraid so many
- 32:34Christians don't believe this about prayer that they're
- 32:36missing out on that opportunity. Walk in it enough so that when
- 32:40God actually comes through, you'll be marked for the rest of
- 32:43your life. And you can say like Jesus,
- 32:45Father, I thank you that you have heard me, heard me.
- 32:54Shall we come to our last point? Let's turn to Matthew together
- 32:58in chapter 26. The Lord Jesus not only gave
- 33:09thanks for God's immense grace, not only for his physical needs
- 33:15being met, not only because God had an open heaven over his
- 33:20head. Lastly, the Lord Jesus gave
- 33:23thanks for the fellowship made possible by his sacrifice.
- 33:27Do you know what we do here? Every single Sunday?
- 33:29We partake of the Lord's Supper together.
- 33:31And I'm not sure if you noticed that, but when Pastor Bennett
- 33:33leads us in the breaking of the bread and and the cup, we give
- 33:38thanks for each element separately.
- 33:41And the reason why we do that is because Jesus modeled that at
- 33:43the Last Supper. So it encourages us to take time
- 33:47to consider the distinct elements that have purchased our
- 33:51salvation, at least what they represent.
- 33:53And what do we find here? Let's read Matthew 2626 to 29.
- 34:00Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread and after blessing
- 34:02it, broke it and gave it to his disciples and said, take, eat,
- 34:05this is my body. And he took a cup, and we had
- 34:08given thanks. He gave it to them, saying,
- 34:11drink of it, all of you. For this is my blood of the
- 34:14covenant, which is poured out from many for the forgiveness of
- 34:17sins. I tell you, I will not drink
- 34:18again of this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it
- 34:21new with you and my Father's Kingdom.
- 34:24So what can we say here? We can say with complete
- 34:27validity that Jesus is in fact giving thanks for the new
- 34:30covenant. Absolutely.
- 34:31That's not wrong. But I think it's more precise
- 34:33than that, at least in this context.
- 34:35Not only is He thanking the Father that the new Covenant now
- 34:38is about to be inaugurated, I believe that He is thanking the
- 34:41Father about what the New Covenant would bring about.
- 34:44And in this case, what He is eagerly looking forward to is
- 34:49that because of His impending sacrifice, He will one day be
- 34:53reunited with His disciples in eternity.
- 34:58I believe that was part of His Thanksgiving.
- 34:59You're saying really? I'm saying really?
- 35:01Why else mention what we see here in verse 29 where He says I
- 35:04will not drink of this fruit of the vine until I drink it anew
- 35:06with you and my Father's Kingdom.
- 35:09So think about it. The moment he establishes this
- 35:11communion, he he right away says, I want to let you know
- 35:17that we're going to be reunited again that we're going to have
- 35:21fellowship forever. You cannot tell me that the Lord
- 35:25did not have this longing and this yearning even as he was
- 35:28laying out this ordinance for the church.
- 35:31He did, and that sets the seal of what this table is about
- 35:37every single month when we celebrate, at least in its
- 35:39fullness, that we're not just rehearsing what the Lord has
- 35:41done, but what He will do to return and reunite us to be with
- 35:45Him everlastingly. And it would be unwise for us to
- 35:51celebrate our eternal fellowship with a Savior and the Saints
- 35:55only once a month. Extend your Thanksgiving about
- 36:00what has been made possible through the cross as a daily
- 36:05realization. Paul does this over and over
- 36:08when he thinks about his relationship, yes, with Christ,
- 36:11but with the believers. Years ago, we studied the book
- 36:19of Ephesians. We might revisit in years to
- 36:20come, but I remember to this day that early in our study of the
- 36:26book of Ephesians, there was something that Paul says that he
- 36:30did for the church that cut my heart and it's still bleeding in
- 36:35a good way. The way this man thought and
- 36:39thanked God for Christians was mind boggling to me.
- 36:44So you don't have to turn there, but please just lean in because
- 36:46we're almost done here. I want to read these verses to
- 36:48you. Just listen to this man's
- 36:50language of how he gave thanks not for the bread that
- 36:54represents the body, but the actual spiritual body of Jesus
- 36:57Christ. Namely, the church doesn't know
- 36:59what he says in Ephesians one, verse 15.
- 37:02For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord
- 37:05Jesus and your love toward all the Saints, I do not cease to
- 37:08give thanks for you remembering you in my prayers.
- 37:12Now this was years ago when this was unpacked to me in great
- 37:15detail and I sat back in my chair and this is the thought
- 37:17that came to me and I remember it so clearly like it was
- 37:20yesterday. When was the last time I took
- 37:24the time to come before the Lord and identify people based on
- 37:30their fervent devotion to God and their service to the Church
- 37:34of Jesus Christ and to thank you for such people?
- 37:37Lord, thank you for such people. When was the last time that I
- 37:44thank God for his work, not in me, but in somebody else?
- 37:48This is what Paul is saying. I can't help but give thanks
- 37:51because I'm witnessing something of God's glory in you and I want
- 37:57to honor and acknowledge God for that.
- 38:01Now here's another place in Philippians one verse three, I
- 38:04thank God, I thank my God and all my remembrance of you always
- 38:09and every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy.
- 38:14Can you imagine that? Can you imagine having such an
- 38:16awareness of people in your life that when you pray for them or
- 38:20about them, you get excited? This is biblical Christianity.
- 38:26I'm just telling you what it's saying here.
- 38:27And I'm like, if this is possible, give it to me.
- 38:30Here's Paul who says, when I think about you and I pray for
- 38:33you, I get giddy. But he doesn't end there.
- 38:39Why is he praying with joy? Verse 5, because of your
- 38:42partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
- 38:49So here again, thinking to myself, looking at this, this is
- 38:53how we should read our Bibles. When was the last time that I
- 38:57came before the Lord and I identified people in my life who
- 39:01enrich my ministry and make my walk with Jesus Christ that much
- 39:06sweeter? When have I given thanks for
- 39:11that? Might be thinking, I didn't know
- 39:16a message on Thanksgiving can be so convicting.
- 39:20I'll tell you why it's convicting because it's not our
- 39:22disposition. It's not our disposition and
- 39:26that's why the Scripture is absolutely sprinkled with it.
- 39:30So we would be reminded you have so much to give thanks, yes, so
- 39:35much to be grateful for. And the Bible has been given to
- 39:38us as a mirror to be like this is you're missing this, you're
- 39:41not seeing this. And that's why we have every
- 39:46right to come before the Lord saying, Lord, help me see what I
- 39:51can't see. You know, there's a testimony in
- 39:54the book of Genesis where where God opens people's eyes to
- 39:57things that are before them. Come to Genesis 21.
- 40:04Her and her son Ishmael are out in the wilderness.
- 40:06They run out of water. And notice what verse 17 says of
- 40:10Genesis 21. And God heard the voice of the
- 40:12boy, and the Angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to
- 40:15her, What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the
- 40:18voice of the boy where he is up. Lift up the boy and hold him
- 40:21fast with your hand, for I'll make him into a great nation.
- 40:24This is it, this is it. I'm telling you we're not going
- 40:26further than this. Verse 19.
- 40:28Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water.
- 40:32She went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a
- 40:34drink. People debate, did God create
- 40:36the well and then show it to her, or was it always there but
- 40:40she couldn't see it? I leaned to the latter.
- 40:46And it reveals something about us and our humanity, especially
- 40:48in our troubles and our trials, that we often cannot see what
- 40:52things are right before us that can rescue us, that can bless
- 40:57us, that God has supplied for us.
- 41:00So I bring this up in closing, that we would ask God for that
- 41:03same miracle. There are things that we should
- 41:05be thankful for that are right under our noses and we just
- 41:11can't see it. But God is so gracious enough to
- 41:14open our eyes so that we can give thanks.
- 41:16Can I give you a final thought from Jesus giving thanks to the
- 41:19Last Supper? It was on the night that he
- 41:22would be arrested and put to death, which tells me something
- 41:26about his gratitude. He was thankful until his dying
- 41:31day. I want to follow my Jesus in
- 41:35that way. You know, sometimes as people
- 41:38get older in life, they become more cynical.
- 41:42They get grumpier because they've sailed through life and
- 41:46they've seen the fickleness of people and the evil in the world
- 41:49and they just become jaded. That's not your destiny if
- 41:52you're a spirit filled Christian.
- 41:55I see my Jesus and I see him. Even on the night that he was
- 41:58going to be betrayed by one of his own, he just finished
- 42:00washing his feet. The devil had entered him
- 42:03according to John 13, and yet he can still have the presence of
- 42:07mind and the heart filled of the Holy Spirit to give thanks.
- 42:12I need that. Can we pray and ask God to help
- 42:15us? Lord, we thank you for the
- 42:17service. A simple message Lord, but all
- 42:24one that convicts us all, including the one who shared it.
- 42:28Lord, help us be a people who know the great protection and
- 42:33provision of Thanksgiving. Heal our hearts from murmuring
- 42:37and grumbling. Help us be like Hagar who is
- 42:40able to see things that she missed.
- 42:45Even if our eyes are filled with tears, Lord, even if our eyes
- 42:48can't seem to pull away from the things that trouble us or
- 42:51disturb us, Help us see what you want us to see that can save us
- 42:57and sustain us. Lord, from our hearts we say
- 43:02thank you for Maranatha Bible Church and as Paul gave thanks
- 43:06for the church, as we give thanks to you for this one.
- 43:09Thank you for every single believer here who makes this
- 43:12ministry possible. Thank you for every servant
- 43:15behind the scenes. Thank you for every person who
- 43:17sacrificed time and energy for the gospel to go out, for
- 43:21believers to be strengthened and encouraged.
- 43:23People who have sacrificed their money, people have sacrificed
- 43:26their gas, people who sacrificed their homes, their meals.
- 43:30Lord, we are grateful and we trust, oh God, that it will be
- 43:33rewarded. Lord, we pray that as a church
- 43:36moving forward, we would abound in Thanksgiving.
- 43:40May that be our portion by your Spirit's help.
- 43:43In Jesus mighty name we pray Amen and Amen, Amen.
- 43:49We're going to celebrate downstairs in a moment, but
- 43:51let's give God a final Thanksgiving and praise and in
- 43:55song and worship.
