Latest / CEO Kingdom Seekers / Ep 22: Stop Planting in the Wrong Season: God's Design for Business Growth (Genesis 1:14)
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: We're gonna be talking today about chaos and order and how you handle the seasonality of your business as a kingdom-focused entrepreneur.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: And so I am really excited to just dive into this today because I feel like this is a topic that has been coming up for a lot of the people that we are supporting at our agency and also like a lot of the people who are in our academy.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: I want to just start off in prayer before we get started.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Dear God, thank you so much for bringing us together today.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Thank you for just waking us all up today.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the rain and the sunshine.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the longer days where we get to spend more time awake with you.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Thank you for restless, excuse me, restful nights.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: And thank you for the restless nights.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the storms that we had here last night.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: And thank you for being able to wake up and have a little bit of extra time with you in an unexpected way.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: So I just pray that you'll bless my words.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Bless everybody who attends this live today.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Just help them really to understand the chaos and the order and the seasonality of their business and how it's impacting them right now.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And give them wisdom.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Help them to obey you in these seasons.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: And I pray all this in Jesus' name.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: So chaos, order, seasonality.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Like, let's talk through it.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Today is kind of an interesting day for me because I am going live every Tuesday.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: And last Tuesday we had a big meeting.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: The Tuesday before something else had happened.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: And I was like, okay, God, I've created this schedule around going live, around being sure that I am recording because these all get turned into podcasts for our CEO Kingdom Seekers podcast, and they get put into our regulated Roots Academy vault.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: And so I was like, God, I want to make sure that I'm being consistent, right?
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I want to make sure that I am doing things in accordance with what I have said I'm going to do.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: And so that led me to really just thinking about planning and led me to think about seasonality.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And I realized I hadn't talked on these topics in a while.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: And so I wanted to bring this in, particularly because we're right now like smack dab in the middle of the summer season.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: We're about, I think, five weeks in as of today.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: And so we're right in the middle.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: We're at the peak of the summer season.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: And if you're in the southern hemisphere, you're in the peak of the winter season, right?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And summer and winter have different purposes in the natural order that God has established than spring and fall do.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: I see a lot of business owners as they are starting and then as they are scaling and trying to sustain while they continue to grow.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I see a lot of business owners struggle with this because they plan to do things in seasons that oftentimes aren't the right seasons.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: And so just to define seasons, we have the seasonality of the actual like 13-week seasons in the world.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: We have the seasonality of our individual lives.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm about to be 40 this year.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I'm entering into a season of womanhood that is different than others.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I am a parent of three high schoolers for the first time ever.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: So entering into a season of parenting that is new, individually, like entering into a season of marriage that is new.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: My husband and I have started recently mentoring other couples in marriage.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: And so what is so fascinating about this is that we have these individual seasons that we all go through, and then we also have these seasons that like everybody goes through at the same time.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: And then we also have seasons in our world that are longer, right?
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And we see this in the Bible a lot.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: We have seasons of exile, we have seasons of return, we have seasons of repentance, abundance, flourishing, and then we have seasons of a lot of times like falling away and going back into that exile, going back into that wilderness.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: So we can have wilderness seasons and preparing to enter into the promised land seasons and promised land seasons and then exile seasons, and so we can have all of these things.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And it is helpful to understand that like all of this is explained in the Bible in some really beautiful ways.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And so I want to focus in particularly today around the seasonality of the year and also keep in context that we have individual seasons that are happening, and we also have like collective world seasons that are happening.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: So when you think about this in terms of your business, we don't want to just think about these seasons that I'm gonna teach you about today.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: You want to be thinking about how do I also look at the season that my community, my country, the world is in, and how do I also look at the season that I am personally, individually in as a woman, as a wife, as a mom, you know, parent, as a human.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: In Genesis, God teaches us what we are supposed to do.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: So God actually gives the idea of work to Adam, to humans, before the fall.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: So work was always meant to be part of what we do.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Work and taking action and having dominion, being fruitful and multiplying and having dominion over creatures, over creation is what we are designed to do.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So, as entrepreneurs, as business people, when we decide to start a business, we are really stepping into that natural design, that natural order of creating and taking dominion over creation.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So we're co-creating with God and we're also taking the dominion that He has assigned to us, and we are exerting that in the space that we believe God is calling us to take that dominion because we all have different spaces, all right.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So work is part of what we do, all humans.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: We are designed to work.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: So what's important to understand here is that a lot of times when we are in the world, the world teaches us that we're supposed to try to make money doing as little work as possible.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, we're supposed to try to earn income and like make a ton of money while doing as little work as possible.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: That is not the way God designed us, all right?
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: We are designed to work, we are designed to take action, to be in motion.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Now, God also designed us to rest.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Okay, God didn't need to take a Sabbath on the seventh day, He did that so that we understood how important rest was.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: And so we own the fact that God has designed us to work, and then we also own the fact that God has designed us to rest.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So starting from that point, then it makes sense that, all right, if God designed this and God literally placed humans in a garden to start and he taught them how to work, then using gardening as a metaphor for our work and our business and approaching business like a garden is gonna actually be pretty beneficial for us.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: It's gonna help us to make good decisions because it's gonna help us understand the seasonality of things, which is what we're talking about.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: So when we look at gardening, right?
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: And it's so funny, though the daily readings today from Mass were about the good seed, right?
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: About Jesus being the sower of the good seed and the enemy being the sower of the weeds.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: And it was a farming, it was a planting, it was a gardening metaphor.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: And Jesus uses like of all the metaphors, he uses a lot of gardening and planting metaphors.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: There's a lot in there around that.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: And the reason is is because we can really understand the dominion that we are supposed to own, the authority that we are supposed to take as children of God, as entrepreneurs, in that gardening example.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: So we have seed, we have soil, we have land, right?
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: The field, we have the tending, like all of the things that we need in order to prep the land to receive the seeds, and also the things that we need in order to take care of those seeds and help them grow.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And then we have the growth itself, and we have the fruit or the the produce that comes from whatever we've grown, right?
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: So when we think about what is needed, there's not a lot there.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: We need a seed, we need a place to plant the seed, we need a way to cultivate and grow the seed, and then we need patience, we need time, we need intentionality and consistency because you can't just water the seed once and then go, okay.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: And we need something else.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And I think this is something that left out a lot, or we try to find from another space, and that is we need God's providence, we need him to provide, right?
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: How many times have we heard stories about droughts or about floods that happen in spaces where like the the humans had plans?
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: They planted things and and they were planning on growing things, and either like there was no water or there was too much water, there was no nourishment or there was too much nourishment.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: So we need God's providence.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: We need him to help us to ensure that those things grow and that they grow well.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: The biggest thing here that I see mess up entrepreneurs as they are getting started is they confuse what is God's responsibility with what is their responsibility.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So when we decide the seed we're gonna plant, that is something that we want to decide with God.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: We want to decide this with God because we want to make sure that we're planting what God wants us to plant.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Now, the interesting thing that I see for a lot of people is they get stuck here and they go, okay, well, I don't know what kind of business I should start.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: I have all of these different business ideas, and God hasn't specifically told me which one to do.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm just sitting here waiting for him to tell me which one to do.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: If that is you, my invitation to you is to start moving, is to take one of the ideas or one of the things that you think God might want you to sew and ask yourself which one of these would be the easiest for me to get started with, or which one of these do I think would really serve people the most?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Now, you really want to make sure that you're gonna enjoy what you're doing.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: And to start, you don't know what you don't know.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: So choosing something that you're passionate about, choosing something that you would be excited to see grow, not because it would like bring you success or fame or fortune or anything like that, but because you're like, wow, this would really serve God's people.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And I truly believe like this would be something that would be beneficial for the world.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Starting there, you taking action, even like reaching out to a mentor or you checking out a book from the library or you taking like an inexpensive course online, like you starting to get into movement, you looking up what you need to do to start an LLC, you looking up what needs to happen in the state that you live in or the country you live in in order to get started, like you starting to take action that way, that is when God a lot of times is going to start directing you, right?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Like he straightens our paths.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: If we are seeking him, actively seeking him and actively seeking to do his will, he straightens our paths.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: So at that point, if you're not sure what to pick, pick something and start because that is you actively taking steps on a path, which means he can straighten the path.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: If you stay still and wait for him to tell you the exact business to start, the exact thing to do, the exact way to create this, a lot of times you're just gonna stay stuck because God needs you to start moving for him to direct you on a path.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: If you're just sitting still, like it's really difficult for him to like move you, right?
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: He can if he wants to.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: And what I've seen for most people when they are starting is get started, get into motion, and that's and continue to talk to God, continue to ask him for his wisdom, continue to say, Hey, God, I want to build this with you, I want to co-create with you.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Like, what would you have me do here?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Continue to seek his advice and his wisdom.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: He's gonna guide you, okay?
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: So if you already know the seed that you want to start with, like God's already given you a vision, he's already said, like, Lee, this is the marketplace I want you in.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Then at that point, you're gonna start.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: So we are going to ensure that we've got good soil that we're gonna plant in and that we have good seed.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: So good seed is the idea.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Good seed is the thing that you want to bring to fruition that's going to help people.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: The soil is where you are actually planting.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And so I think what's important about this is that you can start the same business in different ways and it will grow differently.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: So, in the same way that you can start plants off in little cedar packs, I forget what those are called.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: If you've seen those before, they're like these little trays, and you put like one seed in each of the 20 sections of the tray and you grow them inside of your home, or you grow them like under a light, and then you take them outside and plant them versus going out into an open field and like taking a ton of seed and planting it right then, sowing it right then.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: The soil and the location in which you were gonna do this, again, you might not be sure.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: You might not be sure if you should start small or start big.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I tell people is it's better to start small, usually, because starting big, you have a higher likelihood of failure.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: And if you are somebody who can handle a high, like you can handle failure and you just get up and start going, keep and get up and keep going and get up and keep going, please do that.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: And I don't want y'all to hear what I'm not saying.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying don't start with a big vision in mind.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying don't think five years into the future and ask yourself, what would I hope that this became?
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: That's actually a beautiful place to start.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And we want to make sure that we are taking that big vision and bringing it down to tangible, bite-sized everyday steps to start, because otherwise you're gonna get really burned out really quickly.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: If you have never plowed a field before, if you have never planted before or like sown seeds before, and you are going out and you just bought like a hundred-acre farm and you're planning to till all of that land and plant every seed you've bought and like you're throwing it all in.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: If God tells you to do that, if you get a very clear instruction to do that, do what he says, right?
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Don't listen to me over him.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Don't listen to anyone over him.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And oftentimes, if he's not specifically saying, hey, I want you to start really big, start small, okay?
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Do your research, understand what is needed in order to grow that particular seed that you are planting, what kind of soil it needs, what kind of sun it needs, what kind of nourishment it needs, what kind of watering, how much water it needs.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Like learn those things first and then start small, okay?
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Because business scaling and sustainability is truly about replication.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: It's about automation, replication, and systemization.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: We want to systematize, we want to automate as much as we can so things are efficient.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: And then we also want to make sure that we are replicating, okay?
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: We want to be able to replicate what we're doing.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: And so if you start small and you learn how to grow those seeds inside of your house or in a pot on your porch, rather than you like going out and investing 10,000, 100,000, a million dollars into something and then not knowing if it's gonna work or not because you've never done this before.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Again, if God tells you to do that, and I see a lot of people get really messed up this way when they're starting in business.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: And I also see people when they're scaling, they'll make the same mistake.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: They're like, oh, I've already started a successful business.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: I know how to do all of this.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: I want to buy a second field and start planting apple trees instead of orange trees.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, okay, but have you ever grown an apple tree before?
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: You may have a lot of the wisdom that you need for these things over here, but if you've never grown an apple tree, there's still gonna be a learning curve.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: And so don't assume that what you did in a hundred acres over here, you can do in a hundred acres over there.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, like you might want to start, maybe you're not gonna start with seeds in your house, but you might want to start with like five acres over here and learning how to do apples and then plant and sow the whole field.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: So that's the soil.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Figuring out where you're gonna plant.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Now, practically, a lot of times people go, okay, Lee, well, what's a starter pack in your house versus a hundred-acre field?
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: This looks like if you are planning on starting like a brick and mortar, maybe you're gonna start creating orders in your kitchen rather than go rent an industrial kitchen or even buy an industrial kitchen, right?
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: So you learning how to do these things at the smaller scale and like getting your packaging correct in a way that like feels really good for you, getting your marketing and sales figured out because one of the things that I see really throw people off is like they start to produce and all of a sudden they've got a really high demand and they like never plan for that.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: And that takes them a minute to figure out, oh, okay, I actually have to like start doing more taxes than I thought I did.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: I have to do quarterly taxes, estimated taxes.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: I need to actually hire somebody and now I'm gonna do payroll.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Like, how do I do all of these things?
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: So starting small is really helpful because it's gonna create good problems, right?
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: It's a great problem when you have more demand than you have supply.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Because at that point, you can then you've got evidence that it makes sense for you to go buy a bigger field or at least a rent one.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: It's great when you have you're running out of packaging and you have to go look for a different supplier because you don't have enough seed because every time you plant, it comes right up and then it grows and people buy it, and you've got to like get more.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: So you might have to go find a different supplier.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Like that's a beautiful problem.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: You may figure out that like you need a different hydration system because now you need, you know, gallons and gallons of water versus just like a little bit because you're growing more.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, great.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Now that's a beautiful problem.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I get to go solve.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: So starting small and then having good problems is always a beautiful thing to have happen rather than starting big.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Starting big and then like not having the demand and then having to answer for that supply.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So we're going to sow, we're gonna choose good soil, and then we've got to ensure that we've got a plan for tending.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And this is something I see people really struggle with, all right?
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Tending is boring.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Tending is boring a lot of the time.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, you're just watching and you're doing the same thing every day, going out and you're watering and you don't see any growth.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: And I could say that another 60 times.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: So there is a season after you plant and after after you choose the seeds, after you choose the soil, after you then actively plant that you tend, and it's boring.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And a lot of times this is where people give up because there's no dopamine in it.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: In fact, a lot of times you're working pretty hard, you're working pretty diligently, and and you just like expended a ton of effort to get this thing created, and now it's all set, and you're watering it, and it's like taking a while.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: I'm currently in this season right now with our regulated roots academy.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: So I have completely set up our regulated roots academy.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: It's this beautiful place for people at all stages of entrepreneurship.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: And it is a place where people can come and get learning about the roots of business.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: They can understand how to build a business God's way and not build a business and then ask God to bless it.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I'm so proud of it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: It's got a little bit of something for people who like to learn in a lot of different ways.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: So you can come in there and never interact with a single person.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: You can interact with people every day.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: You can be in the chat, you can come on our live calls every week.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: We have a monthly challenge.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: It's got like daily prompts that you can come in and do.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: And we have people in at each level, and it's not growing as fast as my nervous system would want it to grow right now.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: We created a free spiritual gifts assessment, which y'all are welcome to take.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: It's at grow it, your growinggifts.com.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: And so, like, we've created all of these things.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, okay, this is awesome.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: There was a lot of initial interest, which made it make sense to create this.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: And now we're in this space where I'm marketing it and learning how to market it, learning how to water it every day in addition to the things that I'm already doing.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: And it's growing, but like I can't see the growth yet.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Does that make sense?
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: So, same thing's happening with our podcast.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: And the podcast is interesting because we've had a podcast for five years before this and ended that podcast and started this new one.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: I know what it takes to grow a podcast, and we're only on episode 20 right now, which a lot of you might be like, whoa, but episode 20, 21, like our last one had over, I think, 150 episodes at the time we stopped.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I know that growth starts to happen pretty exponentially with just one episode, right?
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: But it's typically an episode that's in like the 20, 30, 40 range.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: It's typically not one of those first episodes that like pops off.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: But we've started seeing this.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: We're having a couple episodes start to really pop off on YouTube.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: So, for those of you who are just about to get started, the summer season is really interesting because a lot of times when people start their businesses in like May, June, and I'm talking northern hemisphere here.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: If you're southern hemisphere, it's the Opposite.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: But like if you're starting in May June, you've got people going on summer vacation.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: You've got people, their kids are off for the summer.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: You've got people who like their schedule's super chaotic.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: So like you can't go, oh, okay, I'm starting my business in tending season and wondering why nothing's growing, aka people aren't purchasing yet.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And so you don't have fruit yet.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Like you just started in a season, a collective season where fruit isn't a normal thing.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, you might have fruit pop off right now.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: You know, we still sign clients in the summer.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: We still have people join our things in the summer, but it's not nearly as common as in the spring or in the fall.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: And the reason behind that is because of the seasonality of how God has designed the world, right?
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Spring is a time of growth, fall is a time of harvest, oftentimes.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And so in springs, you'll have quick growth and you'll have some fruit that happens and people will purchase then.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: And then you'll also see fruit in the fall when people are really starting to be more reflective and think about what's going to happen the next year and start to invest so that they're good for the next year.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: We see some man-made seasons, like right around the new year.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: And we don't typically sell things around the new year because we know that's a man-made season.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: So we typically plan our launches in March and September or October because we know those are the times that people are starting to come out of hibernation or are starting to think about what they're going to need for the seasons ahead to be good through the winter.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: And it's just so important to understand this summer season of tending is boring a lot of the time.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: It's also a season of rest.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: And a lot of people miss this.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: And I've personally missed this.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: This summer for me has been one of the most restful seasons from a work perspective.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Like I've worked the least I've ever worked in a summer this summer.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: And what's wild about that is that the income is actually better than it's been for several summers.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And that comes from this natural honoring of the order.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: It comes from understanding that, okay, if we're planting over here and we're tending here and we're harvesting here and we're resting and letting the ground like go fallow here, then we're honoring that natural order, then there's going, and we understand that we need to store.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: We understand that we need to plan for abundant times and for lean times.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: The more that we start to honor God's order like that in our businesses, the more abundance you're going to just see around the seasons, like throughout all seasons, because again, God really loves, He's designed it for us.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: He's designed it to be good for us to honor the natural seasons.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: So if you are somebody who you're noticing that in winter and in summer, you are just consistently hardcore, like going all out, you might want to look at the fact that you're potentially operating outside of the seasonality of God.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Now, that doesn't mean that you can't be busy at work and then just resting the rest of the time.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: That doesn't mean that you can't put in a solid 30 to 40 hours of work a week during the winter and during the summer and then like play in the summer and rest in the winter.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: That's not what I'm saying.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: And I'll see people who are doing like 70, 80 hour work weeks in the winter.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: I'll see people who are doing 70, 80 hour work weeks in the summer.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, first of all, 70, 80 hour work weeks are not God's design.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: And I will stand on that hill 10 toes down.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: We were not designed to work that much.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: We were not designed to be pulling 12 hour days five to six days a week.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: We weren't designed to be working 16 to 18 hour days that long.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Now, are there seasons in life where you've got to work really hard because you've got to take care of things?
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: And some people might hear this and think, like, oh, Lee, that's kind of a privileged position to take because like you're able to do that.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Look, please hear me.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: I am not saying don't do what you need to do to support your family.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: And what I'm saying in addition to that is sometimes we get so worried about looking to the future, and it looks like we're not going to have daily bread, or it looks like we're not going to be able to take care of things or pay our bills.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: And instead of relying on God and trusting him and trusting that he doesn't want us to work ourselves to the bone to death.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Like that's not how he designed it.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: We lean on our own strength and we push ourselves past capacity.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: And then we end up getting sick.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: We end up having something bad happen.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Or even if you make it through that season, you are so spent that it actually actually ends up causing problems later, right?
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Or you went so hard in this area that you ignored your family.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: You ignored your own health.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: You ignored your own mental health.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: And we need to have a conversation as entrepreneurs, and particularly as Christian entrepreneurs, as children of the king who has said, I don't want y'all laboring in vain.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: I don't want y'all working through the night when I haven't told you to work through the night.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: I don't want you all planting when it's not the season for planting.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I don't want you trying to like do everything in your power to make fruit grow when fruit grows naturally, if you do things in a natural way.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: And that this is a really tough lesson for those of us who have been taught to sow and to tend and to wreath and like it's all on us.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: It's our job to make sure that things happen.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: And so we've really got to look at the responsibility of God versus the responsibility of us.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Like, what has God told us is our job, and what has God said is his job.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: So when we look at this season of tending, a lot of times this is where people forget what God's job is.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: They forget what's God's job and what's theirs.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: And they start trying to do all sorts of things to make that fruit artificially grow faster, to make things um, you know, uh go quicker, go easier, produce more.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Sometimes they'll even forget a field that they've planted over here and they'll stop watering it and they'll come over here and start tending and planting something else.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: And it's like, hey, you've got perfectly good fruit that's gonna grow there.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: You've just got to be patient and you've got to wait and trust the Lord that He's gonna take care of you and He's gonna give you your daily bread while that is growing.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: But we don't do that and we come over here and we start something else.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: And then we come over here and we start something else.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: And then we've got like five fields that are planted, and they're like in various stages of deadness and growth because we didn't give ourselves permission.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: We like we didn't trust God.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: We have this drive to be the ones who can say, I did this.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: And again, tough conversation, but that's pride.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: That's pride.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: It is at the end of this, we want to be able to say that we did it.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: Instead of being able to like look at the results and go, like, God did this.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: God's the one who gave me the seeds, God's the one who gave me the soil, God's the one who made sure it rained, God's the one who made sure that these plants grew, God's the one who gave me a 30, 60, 100fold yield.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: That was from God.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: All I did was my job, which was ask him which seed to plant, ask him where to plant it, plant it, take care of it, and harvest the fruit.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's it.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: And there's actually one more job that you have, and it is one that I think is the toughest, even beyond being patient in the tending in that boring season.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Because our nervous systems, especially in today's society, like with social media, we are geared towards dopamine hits, we are geared towards speed and urgency and productivity and progress and growth constantly.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: That's a big issue.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: And I think an even bigger issue is this.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: This is something that I learned just probably several months ago, and it absolutely blew my mind.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: There's actually two things I want to share here.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: But the first one is this when you have a flourishing orchard, let's say that you have an orange tree that has consistently like produced, okay.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: When it starts to bud, when you start to see the beginnings of the fruit on the tree, a lot of times those trees grow so well that if you were to let every single one of those buds become fruit, it would weigh the tree down, the limbs would snap, and or the fruit would not be as delicious, it wouldn't be as juicy and as tasty because the tree's nutrients are having to serve twice the amount of fruit.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: So a lot of times in these orchards that have like more mature trees, that they are producing and producing well, when the buds form, they actually go through and they measure and they're like, we know that we only want one bud per so many, I don't know, square whatever.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: There's a specific measurement that they have and they go through and they prune off perfectly good buds.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: And they go, these are all no's, so that this fruit over here can be a yes, and it can be as good and delicious as possible.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: And this is something that I think we have a really hard time with because this is that fear of missing out, right?
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: So we've got to make sure that we have space and capacity for all of the fruit that will come.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: And that means you have to say no sometimes to perfectly good fruit because if you say yes to it, the rest of the fruit won't be good.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: So you may have an opportunity that comes up and you're like, wow, this is amazing.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: And this is not the right timing, this is not the right season for this.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: So you gotta be able to know when you're gonna need to prune.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: There are a lot of things that I say no to that I don't want to say no to.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: One of those, actually, I'm gonna mention it here, because I keep starting to get into it and I have to stop is TikTok shop.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: We have a few agency clients who make multiple five figures per month on TikTok shop that we support.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: And we have to have this conversation with them.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: For me, it means that I'm not on TikTok shop at all, right?
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Because as soon as I start putting attention there, I lose attention in the places that I'm truly meant to tend and plant.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Like it is a perfectly good opportunity, and it is a place that we could have that fruit be produced and it'd be amazing.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: And it takes away from the consulting and the teaching that I know I'm here to do, all right.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: With our clients, we have to have conversations about we have a few clients who have brick and mortar, you know, insurance, painting, and like home restoration, these sorts of things that we support in an agency perspective.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: And we have to have this conversation of like, you might have a project come in that is an amazing project, and you still have to hand it off to somebody else because you do not have the capacity for it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: If you want to develop the capacity for that, then let's build the infrastructure for it.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Let's get the systems in place, let's do the SOPs, let's ensure that you are getting structure and like let's go buy some more land, let's go get some more seed, let's go get some more workers for the fields, let's get those things first rather than you take this job on, you take this thing on, and not have what you need.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: And then guess what?
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Your current clients and your future clients are not gonna get what they need.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Hey, you know, yes, you could definitely have 15 brand deals.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: You could have 15 brands that you're working with.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: And if you've got five, that if you work with them, you produce fruit that is like just juicy and gorgeous and delicious, and you make 90% versus over here, you you end up working three times as hard and you get to 100.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Like for me, 90% income at 50% effort versus 100% income at 100% effort, you tell me which one of those you'd probably choose.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Like, does that extra 10% make a difference for you?
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: And if it doesn't decrease the quality of the product, then it's definitely decreasing your quality of life.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Because if the product, the quality of the product's not decreasing, that means that you are putting in extra time and extra energy and extra effort.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: And then where are you sucking that from in your own life?
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: So that's a big piece.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: The other piece I want to talk about is longevity and how many seasons it can take for your business to truly flourish, to get to the point that you even gotta have a conversation about pruning good things.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: Because pruning is a crucial part of this conversation, but that pruning of good things is only one of the three things that you need to prune.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: And so when we talk about what this looks like long term, when you are starting something new, you've got to be in this for the long haul.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: If it truly matters to you, you've got to be in this for the long haul.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: And people ask, like, well, Lee, how long?
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: Here's the thing nine out of 10 businesses go out of business in the first five years.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: And from a statistics perspective, why do those businesses go out of business?
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: It is because they lack resources, they lack assets.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: When you look at businesses that go out of business in the five to 10 year range, of the 10% of businesses that survive the first five years, only 10% of those will survive the next five.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: And so those first five, they run out of assets.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: They run out of time, they run out of energy, they run out of patience, they run out of money, they don't have the knowledge they need.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: A lot of times it's just like, well, this didn't work, right?
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: I didn't produce any fruit.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Those businesses that go out of business in that five to 10 year range, it's typically not from a lack of fruit.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: It's that they don't learn how to prune, they don't learn how to steward through the seasons.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: So they have like this feast famine cycle.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: And a lot of times they just get to the point that they are their own bottleneck.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: And we work with a lot of businesses that are at that point that are like, well, we want to scale and we want to grow, but we're so tired.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, well, yeah, because you grew in this really beautiful way, but there's not pruning happening and you're also not adding in more resources, right?
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: I share that because in those first five years, those first five years, you you gotta give it years.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: One of the most commonly talked about fruits in the Bible is grapes.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: It's vineyards.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Do you know how long it takes for a vineyard to become a sustainable, successful vineyard?
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna put a link to an article if you're listening to this on the podcast.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna put a link in the show notes that it just blew my mind when I read it.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Don't even expect grapes the first year, okay?
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: The second year, you might see grapes, they're gonna be sour, they're gonna be bitter, they are those are not good grapes to use for anything, especially wine.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: The third year, if you are lucky, you're gonna start seeing some grapes that are good fruit.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: And then from that point forward, if it's not the third year, it's usually the fourth, all right?
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Can you imagine being in business for four years before you saw fruit?
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: That was actually good fruit.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Are you willing to do that?
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Are you willing to start a business and scale it in a way that it may take four years to truly see the fruit that you want or longer?
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Now, there are some businesses that take less time.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: And again, if you've already got some things in the works, like maybe you've already done this before, you're starting like a side business, you're reopening something you've done, like you're replicating.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe you're doing a franchise or you're doing something like that.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: Like if you're already replicating a proven system, it's probably gonna take less time.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: If you've already got a field that's got things planted, and like you're buying a field from a farmer who's done this for 20 years, and he's like, Yeah, here's a seed, here's the ground, here's exactly what I did.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: Like there's still a learning curve.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: And you're probably gonna have success faster.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: That is why a lot of people choose something like network marketing or a franchise or or like buying a business from someone else that's already been established, because you're buying a field that is already planted.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: Or you're buying a blueprint, and they're like, if you do these things, it does work.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: So it still takes time and you lose a lot of people in that tending stage.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: But if you are not doing that, you've got to be willing to give this several years and and trust God to sustain you through that time.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: Because if He is truly calling you to do this, then He will sustain you.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Now, He might have you go get a second job, He may have you take out a loan, He may have you move in with your parents, like He may have you rent out a room in your house, He may have you doing some things that you're like, oh, I never plan on doing that while also doing this.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: And you've got to be willing to let this fail too.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: Because sometimes God calls us to business not so that we have this amazingly successful flourishing business.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Sometimes He calls you to business to teach you a lesson.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you need to learn a lesson in entrepreneurship that you then take back into corporate.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you need to learn a lesson in entrepreneurship that you then take into ministry or you take into a nonprofit, you take somewhere else.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: So we don't want to um, this is the last thing.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Like when we talk about pruning in that first five years, we need to prune the weeds.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: We need to make sure that we're pruning the weeds, and the weeds are the doubts and the fears and the anxieties and the worries, and the the weeds are also the expectations.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Expectations can be just as big, if not worse, weeds in your field, in your business, than fear.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Because you expecting that things are gonna go in a certain way, you expecting that, you know, oh, well, I know Lee said that it takes four years or five years, and I'm sure it'll go faster for me.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: You expecting to sign 100% of all clients who do an inquiry call with you, the average close rate for really amazing closers is like 50%.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: So if you're like, oh, I'm gonna start closing 70% of all of the discovery calls that I have off the bat, well, okay, we've got some really unrealistic expectations.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: We wanna have hope.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: We wanna have faith.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: If God leads us to a business, we have hope and faith and trust that he will take care of us, that he will use everything for good, that he will help us along the way, that he will give us our daily bread, that he will sustain us and he will help us through all of it, that he will give us his peace and his strength and all of those fruits of the spirit, he's gonna cultivate those in us along the way.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: And we have no idea how this business is gonna turn out.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: You don't know if you're gonna be a millionaire, you don't know if you're gonna be on the cover of Ford.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Like you don't know if you're gonna be able to say anything about the success, the fame, the fortune, the abundance, like any of that around the business.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: And this goes back to the seed.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, it goes back to the seed.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: You've got to make sure that the seed you are planting, your heart is in it.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: That even if this doesn't go the way that you wanted it to go, you are so glad that you tried because the seed you were planting mattered.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: Because the way in which you wanted to help people, the product that you wanted to bring to the marketplace, the service that you wanted to use to support others, like you truly thought that it would benefit people.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: You truly thought that it would bring good to others.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: You truly thought, like, yes, if I do this, this allows me to fulfill both commandments, the greatest commandments, to love God above all else, to will God's good and to love others as I love myself, right?
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: As we love ourselves.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: So I'm willing the good of others, I'm willing the good of myself, I'm willing the good of God first and foremost through this business.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Because if you're not hitting that mutually beneficial triangle, if you're not like, is this in accordance with God's will?
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: Is this willing the good of other people?
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: Is me starting this business willing the good of myself?
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: If you can't say yes to all three of those, you got an issue.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: And so the pruning that happens is the devil, the enemy, if you go into Matthew chapter 13, he talks about this.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: The enemy is gonna come in and try to sow weeds.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: He's gonna try to sow doubt, he's gonna try to sow fear, he's gonna try to sow anxiety, and he's also gonna sow expectations.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: He's also gonna sow worldly ways of doing business in.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: And if you are not intentional about pruning those weeds, if you are not intentional about ensuring that you're protecting against that, because in the gospel story, the weeds are so mixed in with the fruit that God just says, wait till the end.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: When Jesus comes back, we'll sort it then.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: And this is where context is really important because if you are sowing and you start to see weeds pop up, or you've got a garden in your yard and you start to see weeds pop up, we know what to do.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: God has taught us that that is the natural order of things to weed those things out.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: And he may ask you to plant in a heavily weeded area and say, I want you to grow your fruit here.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: And I need you to allow me to clear out the weeds in your mind, the soil of your mind.
