Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Retail crime numbers are hurting the Government
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There is a real risk to the government's reputation. I
- 0:03Speaker 1: mean of every government is thinking ahead to when they
- 0:05Speaker 1: next need to be re elected. There's a risk here
- 0:08Speaker 1: that the government is taking when it goes for sanctions
- 0:12Speaker 1: on beneficiaries, when it goes for tougher requirements and criteria
- 0:19Speaker 1: when it comes to social housing, for example. And you're
- 0:21Speaker 1: starting to see some kickback already in response to some
- 0:25Speaker 1: of these changes. Now, if you're a centrist voter, you
- 0:28Speaker 1: might think, well, I think that those are reasonable expectations
- 0:33Speaker 1: to put on social housing providers, to put on emergency
- 0:36Speaker 1: accommodation criteria, to put onto benefit beneficiaries through sanctions or
- 0:42Speaker 1: through obligations. You might think those things are reasonable. On
- 0:47Speaker 1: the other hand, you might think that seems a bit cruel,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and actually, in an economy like this, where jobs are
- 0:52Speaker 1: hard to come by, I might find myself in that position.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I don't want to have those types of obligations. I
- 0:58Speaker 1: don't understand what those obligations are. So there is a
- 1:01Speaker 1: political risk to doing this stuff. But it's bread and
- 1:04Speaker 1: butter for national and it's bread and butter for act
- 1:07Speaker 1: This is exactly what their base want, what their supporters want,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and so they are doing it, but it does come
- 1:12Speaker 1: with a risk. It does come with some political risk.
- 1:15Speaker 1: One thing that they need to get on top of
- 1:18Speaker 1: their government is retail crime. The Dairy Owners Group, this
- 1:22Speaker 1: is based on police data, have released new information this morning.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So they say that retail crime is up seventeen percent
- 1:30Speaker 1: under national seventeen percent. This is the government. Remember the
- 1:35Speaker 1: coalition government said we're going to crack down on retail crime.
- 1:39Speaker 1: The first five months of this year versus last year,
- 1:42Speaker 1: theft was up, robberies were down interestingly five percent, burglaries
- 1:46Speaker 1: down ten percent. But here's the one you need to
- 1:48Speaker 1: worry about. Acts intended to cause injury. We're up four percent.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That is very bad and you're seeing it with hammers
- 1:57Speaker 1: and all sorts of things being used as weapons and
- 1:59Speaker 1: shops that the government needs to get on top of
- 2:03Speaker 1: because they made a big promise. Mark Mitchell has talked
- 2:06Speaker 1: the big talk. The numbers so far aren't tracking in
- 2:09Speaker 1: their direction and they need to turn them around. For
