Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: College Football Chaos: Texas Beats Ohio State, Oregon Stunned & NFL Week 1 | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: We'll get into Drop City on Monday Night Football. All
- 0:04Speaker 1: the reaction from the NFL coming up momentarily here on
- 0:09Speaker 1: the next round. Presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sport
- 0:12Speaker 1: and State. A ton of college football. A ton of
- 0:14Speaker 1: college football to get to. Leading into Week 3, where
- 0:18Speaker 1: you have a great Friday night game. Houston, Texas Tech.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Got SMU, Louisville. Interesting Mississippi State, South Carolina, Florida, Auburn.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We'll find some SEC contenders maybe out of that. And,
- 0:29Speaker 1: of course, the circus that is LSU and Ole Miss.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Just a first blush as we get ready for LSU-Ole
- 0:35Speaker 1: Miss before we talk about the games this past week.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We've got a whole week to build up to that
- 0:40Speaker 1: game in Oxford. 64,000, I think, is the official, somewhere
- 0:44Speaker 1: in that neighborhood, Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, 64,000. Wouldn't be surprised if
- 0:48Speaker 1: 164,000 is on the premises. Super excited for this game.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I think most people are. You know, the unfortunate thing.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Is you also have Florida-Auburn at 6 o'clock.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that's too good. I'm not going to complain about
- 1:03Speaker 1: two good games, but I do wish we had some
- 1:05Speaker 1: separation there.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I just wonder how many people around the nation are
- 1:08Speaker 2: even going to see that game.
- 1:09Speaker 1: That's advantage Auburn. They're playing that game at night. But
- 1:13Speaker 1: from the TV standpoint, that game should have been 11
- 1:15Speaker 1: o'clock on ABC. That should have been Florida-Auburn, 11 a.m.
- 1:18Speaker 3: On ABC.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you can bury Georgia-Arkansas wherever you want.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That is going to be a bloodbath.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Yeah, that will be a massacre.
- 1:27Speaker 2: But, you know, that does, I mean, I am so
- 1:29Speaker 2: excited about Florida-Auburn, but the big screen will obviously be
- 1:33Speaker 2: LSU-Ole Miss. I think it probably will be for you
- 1:35Speaker 2: guys as well. This season through two weeks is already
- 1:39Speaker 2: on crack.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It is.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It's so much fun. Well, let's start right there. Before
- 1:44Speaker 1: we get to Texas-Ohio State, which was just, it was
- 1:48Speaker 1: two different games, but it was It was a close,
- 1:50Speaker 1: exciting game, maybe the best game of the year so far.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But to your point, Michigan should have lost to Western Michigan.
- 2:00Speaker 1: They beat Oklahoma. But more on crack was Oklahoma State
- 2:05Speaker 1: losing to Tulsa and then beating Oregon, who was a
- 2:08Speaker 1: 23.5-point underdog. Make it make sense. That is an insane game.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well, go back last year, the week before Mike Gundy
- 2:15Speaker 2: loses his job, they lose 69-3 in Autzen to Oregon.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It's a completely different roster, but still, when you go
- 2:23Speaker 2: from a 13.5-point favorite against Tulsa, you lose outright by
- 2:28Speaker 2: two touchdowns as a two-touchdown favorite. Then you're getting three-and-a-half
- 2:32Speaker 2: touchdowns at home to Oregon. Without the two, basically, Messermaker
- 2:38Speaker 2: was great. You know, threw the pick six on the tip.
- 2:42Speaker 2: By the way, one of the fastest defensive linemen I've
- 2:44Speaker 2: ever seen going down the sideline.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That was a big dude, wasn't it?
- 2:46Speaker 2: And then Uyunglele almost had a second pick six and
- 2:50Speaker 2: gave him a first and goal with a two. So
- 2:52Speaker 2: they basically gave them 14 points and still won the game.
- 2:56Speaker 5: I know.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It makes no sense. And Oregon's defense has got massive questions.
- 3:02Speaker 1: We thought it was because Boise State was just that good.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I wrote it off to that, Jim. I'm like, yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 1: Boise State's just a dang good football team. And again,
- 3:07Speaker 1: Boise State was good against Memphis this week. But it's
- 3:10Speaker 1: now two straight weeks where Oregon's defense cannot get lesser
- 3:14Speaker 1: teams off the field. It's not like they're playing, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: USC or Ohio State. They're playing lesser teams. You can't
- 3:20Speaker 1: get them off the field.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Let me go to Eric Morrison, what Mastemaker and Caleb Hawkins,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, from week one to week two. You know,
- 3:27Speaker 2: my observation this weekend is the Big 12 is going
- 3:30Speaker 2: to be insane.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Like insane, because Texas Tech ain't that good.
- 3:33Speaker 1: They are not that good. The best teams are BYU
- 3:35Speaker 1: and Utah right now.
- 3:36Speaker 2: They are the best teams, but I do think, you know, Arizona–
- 3:40Speaker 2: Had a fourth and four, and I don't know why
- 3:42Speaker 2: Brian Brennan didn't kick it with 10 minutes to go.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Arizona played BYU, for those that don't know.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And they end up going for it, and they give
- 3:49Speaker 2: them the first down, and then they overturn it on
- 3:50Speaker 2: the spot, which you never see. But then BYU goes
- 3:53Speaker 2: down and makes that game look a little further away
- 3:55Speaker 2: than it was. So I think Arizona's going to be
- 3:58Speaker 2: a player. Arizona State, I thought they had every opportunity
- 4:01Speaker 2: to beat A & M.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Open down the field with A & M. Arizona State
- 4:03Speaker 1: played Texas A & M, yep. We're bouncing around a lot.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And it pulled away late, but they were up and down.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I would hope everybody that's listening to us knows what's
- 4:11Speaker 2: going on in the world.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Of college football.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But let me go back real quick. Let me go
- 4:14Speaker 1: back real quick. Because you've got to help me remember
- 4:16Speaker 1: on the point spread. So in the first two weeks,
- 4:19Speaker 1: we've had a 29.5 point dog win outright.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yep.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And then Oklahoma.
- 4:24Speaker 4: That was UMass.
- 4:24Speaker 1: That was UMass. Over Rutgers. Over Rutgers. And then Oklahoma
- 4:27Speaker 1: State was a.
- 4:27Speaker 6: 23.5, 24.5.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So.
- 4:30Speaker 1: In the first two weeks, we've already had a 29.5
- 4:33Speaker 1: dog and a 24-point dog win outright.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Giving out picks is tough.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We were 4-3 on Saturday, but man, it is an
- 4:40Speaker 2: absolute battle when you can get these kind of flip-arounds
- 4:43Speaker 2: from one week to the next. But I do think
- 4:45Speaker 2: the Big 12 is going to be amazing to watch
- 4:47Speaker 2: this year because Arizona State, and I tweeted this out,
- 4:51Speaker 2: they gave up a pick six. I've never seen this
- 4:53Speaker 2: many pick sixes, and I checked to see if it
- 4:57Speaker 2: was a record. It was a record this weekend. The
- 4:59Speaker 2: most pick sixes... Ever in the FBS, 19 pick sixes.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yeah, 21 if you count FBS versus FCS game, the
- 5:06Speaker 1: FCS getting against the FBS. True Media says it was
- 5:11Speaker 1: 17 was the old record in 2019. So 21, 19 FBS.
- 5:14Speaker 1: That's crazy. So in an FCS, FBS, two more. We
- 5:19Speaker 1: were talking to Oregon and Oklahoma State. Oregon's got some issues.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Let's listen to Dan Lanning here. Here's the Oregon coach
- 5:27Speaker 1: after barely beating Boise State at home. and then going
- 5:30Speaker 1: on and losing to a team that had lost 21
- 5:34Speaker 1: straight games to FBS. Here's the Oregon coach.
- 5:39Speaker 7: You know, the score was closer than it really was
- 5:41Speaker 7: because it wasn't close in a lot of ways. We
- 5:43Speaker 7: got our ass kicked in a lot of areas. Tons
- 5:46Speaker 7: of credit to Coach Morris and his staff. You know,
- 5:48Speaker 7: if it wasn't for the takeaways that we had on defense,
- 5:49Speaker 7: it doesn't even look like it looked. You know, that
- 5:52Speaker 7: being said, there's a lot of opportunity for improvement. There's
- 5:55Speaker 7: You look overall as a team, we didn't tackle well
- 5:58Speaker 7: in week one, we didn't tackle well in week two.
- 6:00Speaker 7: We didn't win the line of scrimmage on either side
- 6:03Speaker 7: of the ball. We had to do a better job there.
- 6:06Speaker 7: There's a lot of things that you can look at
- 6:07Speaker 7: and evaluate and say, okay, let's go to work. Ultimately,
- 6:10Speaker 7: on the same note, every single goal is still in
- 6:12Speaker 7: front of us. We control our destiny, but this is
- 6:14Speaker 7: a game that we need to show improvement. We didn't
- 6:16Speaker 7: show improvement. So we have to see that now moving
- 6:19Speaker 7: forward with our team. We've got a locker room that's hurting, obviously.
- 6:22Speaker 7: But on the same note, Oklahoma State went and won
- 6:25Speaker 7: that game, and we didn't do the things that you
- 6:26Speaker 7: have to do to win that game, right? And we
- 6:28Speaker 7: owe that result to ourself.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the surprising part, put the offense aside, because they
- 6:34Speaker 1: lost Will Stein. Dan Lanning's a defensive guy, and they
- 6:38Speaker 1: give up 39 points. Mestemaker was responsible for 426 total yards.
- 6:44Speaker 1: They give up a 27 to Boise State at home
- 6:47Speaker 1: the week before. This isn't the defense we thought Oregon
- 6:50Speaker 1: and what Dan Lanning's used to putting out there. This
- 6:52Speaker 1: isn't the defense we were expecting. And for Oregon, with
- 6:55Speaker 1: their playoff hopes now, you already mentioned pretty soon they
- 7:00Speaker 1: go to USC, right?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so before the season, I would have said there's
- 7:03Speaker 2: two losable games on this schedule. At SC, which they
- 7:07Speaker 2: play 9-26, so in two weeks, and then at Ohio
- 7:11Speaker 2: State when they're in Columbus the first week of November.
- 7:14Speaker 4: When you start to look at the schedule now, UCLA
- 7:17Speaker 4: is in play.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I know. Anybody that's got any sort of offense.
- 7:20Speaker 2: At Illinois is trouble. I doubt Michigan is. I doubt
- 7:24Speaker 2: Washington is. But if they lose just the two you're
- 7:27Speaker 2: talking about that were losable before the season. They're not
- 7:29Speaker 2: a playoff team.
- 7:30Speaker 1: They're a three loss with a loss to Oklahoma State.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So they're out. They're out.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I mean, right now, right now, this moment in time,
- 7:37Speaker 1: as crazy as this sounds. They actually look like the
- 7:40Speaker 1: team that might start in the top 10 and finish unranked.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not trying to be hyperbolic here, but
- 7:44Speaker 1: that defense is that bad, Jim. They cannot get stopped.
- 7:48Speaker 2: To your point, I mean, right now they're 21st. Like
- 7:51Speaker 2: if you would have said middle of September, Oregon's going
- 7:53Speaker 2: to be 21, like what happened?
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Did Dante Moore go down? Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And he's not the same guy we thought he was
- 8:01Speaker 1: going to be, by the way. We'll talk Ohio State
- 8:03Speaker 1: in a moment.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they gave up 554 yards, and Dante
- 8:07Speaker 2: was 14 of 29, completed less than 50% of his passes.
- 8:11Speaker 1: He wasn't good. I can put that more on Will
- 8:14Speaker 1: Stein leaving, got a new offensive coordinator, learning the play calls,
- 8:18Speaker 1: all that, because Dan Lanning's a defensive guy. I can't
- 8:21Speaker 1: explain the defense.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Tosh Lapoi, I guess.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You lose Lapoi, but Dan Lanning's the defensive mind. How
- 8:27Speaker 1: can that not be more tuned in? I can't put
- 8:30Speaker 1: that on Tosh Lapoi, like leaving. That just doesn't make
- 8:35Speaker 1: sense because of what you say. The head coach is
- 8:38Speaker 1: one of the more respected defensive coaches in America.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It's a serious question to you guys, kind of a
- 8:42Speaker 2: four downs on the fly. But better chance Oregon wins
- 8:45Speaker 2: the Big Ten or Oak State wins– The Big 12.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I would say Oaks State wins the Big 12. Oh, no.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Better chance Oregon wins the Big 10. There's no chance
- 8:52Speaker 1: Oklahoma State's winning the Big 10. I don't know that
- 8:53Speaker 1: there's a chance Oregon wins the Big 10. Well, there
- 8:55Speaker 1: may not be.
- 8:56Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Most of the time it's neither. Yeah, most four downs
- 8:58Speaker 1: questions are neither. Here's Eric Morris on Oklahoma State bouncing
- 9:01Speaker 1: back because here's where I'm pissed off.
- 9:04Speaker 4: They can beat anybody in their conference now. I really
- 9:06Speaker 4: believe that.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Okay, here's Oklahoma State coach Eric Morris.
- 9:09Speaker 6: We had some meetings that weren't very pleasant in here
- 9:12Speaker 6: and they had to listen to how bad they were
- 9:14Speaker 6: after hearing how good they were for such a long
- 9:16Speaker 6: time and And to see them practice this last week,
- 9:19Speaker 6: the intensity, I mean, without the two tip passes that
- 9:22Speaker 6: end up being interceptions in that first half, I mean,
- 9:25Speaker 6: you know, we might have won the game by 25-plus points.
- 9:28Speaker 6: I mean, I just thought that physically, like, we played
- 9:31Speaker 6: so much faster and we were more aggressive. And the
- 9:35Speaker 6: guys went out there and competed their tails off. Like,
- 9:37Speaker 6: we're going to have to be really good as coaches
- 9:39Speaker 6: this week. Because everybody's going to tell them how good
- 9:41Speaker 6: they are now all of a sudden. And, you know,
- 9:43Speaker 6: all this stuff switches and, you know, we're in Stillwater.
- 9:46Speaker 6: They're going to have a great night tonight and wish
- 9:48Speaker 6: they should.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:50Speaker 6: But then, you know, the narrative change. And this is
- 9:52Speaker 6: like this is why everybody loves college football.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:55Speaker 6: I mean, I've done this before. Like I'm built for this.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Just I've been in these situations, you know, and actually.
- 10:00Speaker 6: this is better than my first two games at Incarnate Word.
- 10:02Speaker 6: I lost my first two games at North Texas.
- 10:04Speaker 5: I lost.
- 10:05Speaker 6: So one and one is actually an improvement for me.
- 10:08Speaker 1: My question is, why did you look so bad? I'm
- 10:12Speaker 1: glad you did, because it was my upset alert. I
- 10:13Speaker 1: got a nice lead. But why did you look so
- 10:16Speaker 1: bad against Tulsa? in week one.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I said this on the show, and I I think
- 10:21Speaker 2: you guys were listening. Their offensive tackle, their left tackle
- 10:24Speaker 2: goes down.
- 10:25Speaker 1: You're right. You did bring that up.
- 10:26Speaker 2: On the first freaking drive, Mestemaker was under duress the
- 10:30Speaker 2: entire game against Tulsa, which sounds so weird.
- 10:32Speaker 1: That kid must be the best offensive tackle in the
- 10:34Speaker 1: world because it cost him a game against Tulsa, and
- 10:36Speaker 1: then they beat Oregon.
- 10:37Speaker 2: But, you know, they had four turnovers against Tulsa. They
- 10:39Speaker 2: got to clean that up. That's six turnovers in two
- 10:41Speaker 2: games for Oklahoma State. For them to be one and
- 10:43Speaker 2: one right now is pretty amazing. By the way, he's
- 10:45Speaker 2: a mix between a young Robert De Niro and Peyton Manning.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Oh, gosh, I do see it, that forehead of Peyton
- 10:50Speaker 1: Manning in the face of the narrow. Yeah, I do
- 10:52Speaker 1: see that.
- 10:53Speaker 2: But, Dunaway, you don't think they can win a lot
- 10:55Speaker 2: of games in the Big 12?
- 10:57Speaker 1: I don't know their schedule in front of me, but
- 10:59Speaker 1: BYU's better than them. Utah's better than them. Arizona's better
- 11:03Speaker 1: than them. I mean, Oregon's better than them. I mean,
- 11:07Speaker 1: to Lance's point, you get hot on offense. Guess what?
- 11:09Speaker 4: They don't play Utah or BYU.
- 11:11Speaker 1: That's a win. All right. I mean, they could be
- 11:16Speaker 1: a bowl team.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I do not think they'll factor into the big, what's
- 11:19Speaker 1: a heck of a coaching job by him. If he
- 11:20Speaker 1: gets them to a bowl, you'd agree with that, right?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah. They were, they were, they were, they lost
- 11:25Speaker 1: 21 straight FBS.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Wasn't there over under six and a half wins coming
- 11:29Speaker 2: into the season?
- 11:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Which seemed odd. It seems crazy.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But everybody was expecting this team when they got there
- 11:35Speaker 1: and they lost to Tulsa. So my question would be,
- 11:38Speaker 1: why was your team not ready last week?
- 11:40Speaker 2: Um, Yeah, I mean, that's what's crazy because when you
- 11:44Speaker 2: look at this, Murray State this week, they've got to
- 11:45Speaker 2: go to West Virginia.
- 11:46Speaker 4: That'll be a really difficult game.
- 11:48Speaker 2: UCF at home, at Houston, Colorado, at Iowa State.
- 11:51Speaker 4: I mean, these are all winnable games.
- 11:53Speaker 1: A lot to get to in the show being brought
- 11:54Speaker 1: to you by our friends at Hard Rock Bet, our

- 12:41Speaker 1: hardrock.bet backslash clay. Biggest game of the country, Ohio State
- 12:47Speaker 1: and Texas over the weekend. Ohio State dominates for three quarters.
- 12:51Speaker 1: They really dominated looking like an NFL team, running between
- 12:54Speaker 1: the tackles. I don't know if it was because of
- 12:57Speaker 1: the heat, but they seem to be playing at a
- 12:59Speaker 1: very slow pace. Very huddling, very slow. NFL-like offense is
- 13:05Speaker 1: what Ohio State was running. And they're up 23-3. But
- 13:09Speaker 1: I forget which analyst I saw after the game. It
- 13:11Speaker 1: was like when you play that few snaps and you
- 13:13Speaker 1: play it slow and NFL-like methodical, you're not playing as
- 13:18Speaker 1: many snaps and you don't take advantage of when you
- 13:20Speaker 1: have the hot hand. And Ohio State, they thought it
- 13:22Speaker 1: should have been clicking a lot faster in the first
- 13:24Speaker 1: three quarters that by playing that slow pace actually kept
- 13:28Speaker 1: it a lot closer. I thought Sark had lost the
- 13:30Speaker 1: game right before the half when he went for it
- 13:34Speaker 1: on fourth down with a reverse tackle plus territory now
- 13:39Speaker 1: for Ohio State, and they don't just settle for a
- 13:41Speaker 1: field goal. They get the touchdown, and now they're up
- 13:44Speaker 1: 20-3 going to the locker room. I thought you just
- 13:47Speaker 1: thrown the game away, Sark. It felt like a complete
- 13:49Speaker 1: panic move right there, and the game had started as
- 13:52Speaker 1: bad as it could possibly start for Texas, and you
- 13:54Speaker 1: were going to go into the locker room Well, is
- 13:57Speaker 1: it 13-3 right there? 13-3. You're going to go into
- 13:59Speaker 1: the locker room 13-3 if you don't do something stupid.
- 14:01Speaker 1: And I think, you know, it's easy to say this
- 14:03Speaker 1: in hindsight, Lance. But I was thinking in real time,
- 14:06Speaker 1: the way that game started, if you'd have gotten the
- 14:08Speaker 1: locker room down 10, you'd have felt like, all right,
- 14:10Speaker 1: we have survived the best Ohio State has for us.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Let's go win the second half now, and we'll win
- 14:15Speaker 1: the game. They didn't get in. They did win the
- 14:18Speaker 1: second half. But you see what I'm saying right there.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, look, everybody's going to dog John Mateer out, and
- 14:22Speaker 2: they've been dogging him out all weekend. Like, I don't
- 14:25Speaker 2: really know what the difference was. Now, Arch did lead
- 14:28Speaker 2: the fourth quarter comeback. But if Arch hits Cam Coleman
- 14:31Speaker 2: in stride early– Instead of overthrowing that where Cam has
- 14:35Speaker 2: to make the adjustment and the ball bounces up weird
- 14:37Speaker 2: and you get the pick there, that game might play
- 14:40Speaker 2: out differently. Talking to an Ohio State fan, he said
- 14:44Speaker 2: the big problem right now is.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Ryan Day needs a guy like Chip Kelly that is
- 14:49Speaker 2: opposite his personality. Arthur Smith, being an NFL guy, got
- 14:53Speaker 2: way too conservative in the second half, and I think
- 14:55Speaker 2: he did. I didn't think there was any way that
- 14:57Speaker 2: that defense could blow a 20-3 lead at halftime the
- 15:00Speaker 2: way they were playing.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Completely agree.
- 15:02Speaker 2: But they did go into a hole in the second
- 15:04Speaker 2: half offensively.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Especially when Wingo and Coleman couldn't catch a cold in
- 15:06Speaker 1: the first half. They had some big drops. One that
- 15:09Speaker 1: the weirdest interception I may have ever seen. where Coleman's
- 15:13Speaker 1: diving and it bounces up off his chest.
- 15:16Speaker 2: That was a bad, bad throw for Manning.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't remember the end. It's like, Manning put
- 15:21Speaker 1: it on the money. I was like, no, he didn't.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I mean, Cam Coleman had to contort himself.
- 15:23Speaker 4: He had it by six, seven yards.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Cam Coleman had to contort himself just to get
- 15:26Speaker 1: the ball.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Yeah, the offense.
- 15:27Speaker 1: They had some drops. So Wingo had a drop for
- 15:29Speaker 1: a touchdown.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and then Manning missed some easy passes in.
- 15:32Speaker 1: The first half. Here is Ryan Day afterwards on the
- 15:35Speaker 1: loss to Texas. It's not a three-quarter game. They play four, right,
- 15:40Speaker 1: Ryan Day? Yeah.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I think today we really played well for three quarters
- 15:46Speaker 3: and then didn't play well enough in the fourth quarter.
- 15:49Speaker 3: That's the bottom line. We stalled on some offensive drives.
- 15:55Speaker 3: I felt we had them on the ropes and didn't finish.
- 15:59Speaker 3: We've got to go back and figure out why that was.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I think once that happened and they sustained some drives
- 16:06Speaker 3: and then converted those fourth downs, kept us on the
- 16:10Speaker 3: field on defense and Then certainly we had a chance
- 16:13Speaker 3: to kick the field goal to make it a two-score
- 16:14Speaker 3: game and didn't do that. This one hurts. I think
- 16:22Speaker 3: that was the message of the guys in the locker room.
- 16:24Speaker 3: We won the first three quarters and did not obviously
- 16:27Speaker 3: win the fourth quarter. We know that that's the biggest
- 16:31Speaker 3: part of the season. We have to win the fourth quarter,
- 16:34Speaker 3: especially on the road. I can't sit here and tell
- 16:38Speaker 3: you exactly. I know why that happened, but We all
- 16:41Speaker 3: got to take accountability and get this thing corrected and
- 16:44Speaker 3: fixed moving forward.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Now, real quickly, if I can finish this up here
- 16:49Speaker 1: with what he's saying, getting accountable. We were talking about Oregon.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Ohio State's schedule is tougher than Oregon's.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 16:55Speaker 1: So now they've got one loss. Now, we factored the
- 16:58Speaker 1: possibility of them losing to Texas into our preseason.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Sure, sure.
- 17:02Speaker 1: But with one loss now. They can be 9-3 and
- 17:06Speaker 1: still get in. Yeah, I would agree. The counter to that, though,
- 17:09Speaker 1: is how does they play Oregon, right? How does that
- 17:12Speaker 1: feel now? I mean, when you looked at that, you're like,
- 17:14Speaker 1: if they lose to Texas, my God, they've still got
- 17:16Speaker 1: to play Oregon. Yeah. You know, now Ohio State's the
- 17:19Speaker 1: better team. I mean, they're an obviously better team than Oregon.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I think I'm right about this, Lance. They still play
- 17:22Speaker 1: at Indiana, at USC. Yep, yep, yep.
- 17:25Speaker 2: And you've still got Michigan, who he's always had a
- 17:27Speaker 2: problem with. He cannot leave it in the hands of
- 17:29Speaker 2: a kicker. Connor Hawkins is a really good college kicker.
- 17:33Speaker 2: who was three of three before he misses the 45-yarder.
- 17:35Speaker 2: But again, you've got to get a little aggressive. You
- 17:38Speaker 2: put in a touchdown there, you win the game. And
- 17:43Speaker 2: that's twice that he's lost massive games based on kicks.
- 17:46Speaker 1: There's no doubt about it. And he got real conservative
- 17:48Speaker 1: on one. I guess on both, really. But you're right
- 17:52Speaker 1: in what you say, is that Arthur Smith coached that
- 17:54Speaker 1: second half very NFL-like. Boy, you get up. Three scores
- 17:57Speaker 1: in the NFL, you can burn a ton of clock
- 17:59Speaker 1: running the football. And he coached actually the first half
- 18:01Speaker 1: that way, too. He did, but it was working then.
- 18:03Speaker 1: The pace of play was very NFL.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Very NFL.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And I give Muschamp a lot of credit for the
- 18:08Speaker 2: adjustments they made for Jeremiah Smith in the second half.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And for just holding him to field goals a couple
- 18:13Speaker 1: of times. There were a couple of times that it
- 18:17Speaker 1: was just three points instead of. you know, seven, and
- 18:20Speaker 1: that makes the game very different as well. What do
- 18:22Speaker 1: you make of Texas? How good is Texas? It's funny,
- 18:25Speaker 1: everybody's going to make that argument, but boy, through three quarters,
- 18:29Speaker 1: you wouldn't have had them number one. Do we put
- 18:30Speaker 1: them number one based on one quarter of football?
- 18:32Speaker 2: Again, I think it's hilarious, the hate for John Mateer.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Arch Manning did leave a fourth quarter comeback, but I
- 18:40Speaker 2: thought Arch was very shaky throughout the game.
- 18:43Speaker 1: He was. I knew this was going to happen, and
- 18:46Speaker 1: let me just say, If I were an AP voter today,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I would have Texas number one. And I'm not saying
- 18:51Speaker 1: you shouldn't vote them number one. And again, the whole
- 18:54Speaker 1: thing about the AP poll is you can adjust week
- 18:55Speaker 1: to week. The only one that really mattered back in
- 18:57Speaker 1: the day, and none of it matters anymore, the only
- 18:59Speaker 1: one that mattered back in the day was the last one.
- 19:00Speaker 1: As long as you get it right at the last one,
- 19:02Speaker 1: you're fine. But I knew everybody was going to put
- 19:05Speaker 1: Texas number one. I'm fine with it, but you're doing
- 19:06Speaker 1: it based on one quarter. Like one quarter of football
- 19:09Speaker 1: made Texas number one. Yeah, I would not have them
- 19:10Speaker 1: number one. I didn't have them number one in our
- 19:12Speaker 1: SEC power ranking. Here's Sark. Here's Sark with the... SEC
- 19:17Speaker 1: power rating, we'll, I think, do that on Tuesday coming up.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Here's Sark after the Ohio State game. I mean, he'd
- 19:25Speaker 1: had a lot of questions by the time he got
- 19:26Speaker 1: to this one, but this was about at one point
- 19:29Speaker 1: when it was, you know, 23-3. Do you think about
- 19:32Speaker 1: punting instead of going for it on fourth down? Weird question,
- 19:35Speaker 1: but because you're trying to win the game, he'll say,
- 19:38Speaker 1: but listen to the gravitas, if you will, that Sark
- 19:42Speaker 1: answers this with.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Steve, the fourth and nine in the third quarter, you're
- 19:48Speaker 5: down 20. There's 17 minutes left in the game. Does
- 19:51Speaker 5: it ever cross your mind to want to punt just
- 19:55Speaker 5: so it doesn't get any worse? Did you think about that?
- 19:58Speaker 6: No, that's how losers think.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Winners win, baby.
- 20:00Speaker 7: You got to go for it.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Sark, you know, a year ago.
- 20:04Speaker 1: They didn't hire me to keep it close. They hired
- 20:06Speaker 1: me to win.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I hate to call it a dumb question.
- 20:10Speaker 1: It was a dumb question.
- 20:12Speaker 2: But Sark, I know he's taking a lot of heat for...
- 20:14Speaker 2: The halftime, Laura Rutledge, I guess, kind of explained what
- 20:17Speaker 2: happened there. They made him wait, and he finally had
- 20:19Speaker 2: to go into the tunnel. And then Holly, I loved
- 20:21Speaker 2: Holly pouting.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Oh, she rolled her eyes. Oh, my gosh. I don't
- 20:24Speaker 1: know what happened at the end there. That was weird.
- 20:26Speaker 1: The halftime, I get.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I get the halftime, too.
- 20:29Speaker 1: He's had to stand there through Ryan Day being interviewed
- 20:31Speaker 1: on the other side of the field. Same thing happened
- 20:33Speaker 1: at the end. Is that what happened? He had been
- 20:35Speaker 1: standing there for a long, long time already. Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 4: You would think they would go immediately.
- 20:40Speaker 1: You would think. But they didn't. They didn't. But it
- 20:43Speaker 1: was just a weird. It was a bad look for both.
- 20:45Speaker 1: It really was. All right, so that's the Ohio State-Texas game,
- 20:49Speaker 1: a little postgame, the interviews there. So that's our opening segment,
- 20:52Speaker 1: two big games. We'll jump into Alabama on the road
- 20:55Speaker 1: to Kentucky. Some people saying that's a statement win for Alabama,
- 20:58Speaker 1: the way they played in the second half. And a
- 21:00Speaker 1: lot more of the movement in college football and the
- 21:04Speaker 1: NFL through the opening weekend. When we come back on
- 21:07Speaker 1: the next round, presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sport
- 21:09Speaker 1: and State. Back with you on the next round, presented
- 21:12Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bets on Sport and State. More college
- 21:15Speaker 1: football coming up on the show in our next segment.

- 22:33Speaker 1: Biggest takeaway from the NFL in week one. We'll go
- 22:38Speaker 1: to what we saw last night first. Giants look good
- 22:41Speaker 1: enough maybe to win the NFC East. I think you
- 22:45Speaker 1: and I had them as playoff teams.
- 22:48Speaker 4: I did not have them as a playoff team.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I had them as the last wildcard team. Jackson Dart
- 22:53Speaker 1: looked the part last night. So did that Giants defense.
- 22:56Speaker 4: I believe they looked the best in the NFC East yesterday.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Obviously, they beat Dallas. And watching the Commanders, they are awful.
- 23:03Speaker 2: The Eagles are not going to be nearly as good
- 23:06Speaker 2: as they've been over the last couple of years. Yeah,
- 23:08Speaker 2: I mean, if I'm a New York Giants fan, I'm excited.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Malik Neighbors is back a little sooner than most people thought. Scataboo,
- 23:15Speaker 2: obviously the leg is not a problem. You saw when
- 23:17Speaker 2: he scored his first touchdown. You can't contain that son
- 23:21Speaker 2: of a bitch. He's going to just do what he
- 23:22Speaker 2: wants to do. And then the defense, I thought really limited.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I didn't like the play calling for Dallas. I thought
- 23:29Speaker 2: that was really weird. I thought they'd be much more explosive.
- 23:31Speaker 2: But I mean, the New York Giants look really, really.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Good last night.
- 23:34Speaker 1: And the Cowboys have a defensive problem. And some of
- 23:36Speaker 1: the They were pointing it out on the broadcast, some
- 23:39Speaker 1: of those crucial drives before the half and at the
- 23:41Speaker 1: end of the game when maybe you can get the
- 23:44Speaker 1: Giants off the field. Their secondary is leaving wide open receivers. Well,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you know, and this guy may end up being a
- 23:50Speaker 1: great coach, which you saw. You know, they've got, I
- 23:52Speaker 1: think it's the youngest defensive coordinator in the NFL or
- 23:54Speaker 1: one of. Is he 34? Is that how old he is?
- 23:57Speaker 4: 35 or 36, but he is the youngest D.C. in
- 24:00Speaker 4: the league.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah, so an inexperienced guy. You would think with the
- 24:03Speaker 1: issues they've had, they would, Maybe you found some guy
- 24:06Speaker 1: that had a little more experience than that. Maybe this
- 24:08Speaker 1: guy ends up being great. I don't know. But through
- 24:10Speaker 1: one game, it wasn't exactly a great resume day for him.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I don't know if you played in the NFL, Ryan,
- 24:15Speaker 1: but they give us 16 more games to decide whether
- 24:17Speaker 1: or not we make the playoffs.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Thank God they do.
- 24:19Speaker 2: The NFC West, every team's 1-0 except for the Rams.
- 24:22Speaker 2: They own the bottom themselves.
- 24:23Speaker 1: 1970 is when the merger happened. So most stats are
- 24:29Speaker 1: kept back through 1970 as far as any modern-day NFL football.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Most points scored in the opening weekend since the merger, 1970.
- 24:38Speaker 1: And I thought Mike Tomlin did a good job of
- 24:41Speaker 1: explaining this on Sunday Night Football. We just don't practice
- 24:44Speaker 1: the way we used to, so you don't do a
- 24:45Speaker 1: lot of tackling, and you don't play in the preseason.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So the defense, most times you'd say the defense is
- 24:52Speaker 1: there before the offense. Not in the NFL, not the
- 24:54Speaker 1: way you practice anymore. The offense is ready to go.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And the defense has looked behind the eight ball yesterday.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Well, I mean, they did yesterday.
- 25:01Speaker 2: But, I mean, you go back to Wednesday and Thursday nights,
- 25:03Speaker 2: the offenses were horrible. I know Sam Darnold goes down.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Drew Locke takes over. But, you know, New England couldn't
- 25:08Speaker 2: do anything offensively. The Rams were terrible. You talk about
- 25:12Speaker 2: the most points since the merger in 1970. The Rams
- 25:15Speaker 2: and Chargers combined for 21 points. It's pretty crazy because
- 25:18Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel, everybody talked about this offense, including me. I
- 25:22Speaker 2: thought it would pop, and you get a rookie head
- 25:23Speaker 2: coach coming in, and the Cardinals were scrappy with a
- 25:27Speaker 2: backup quarterback in Jacoby Brissett.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I guess not a backup anymore.
- 25:30Speaker 1: The flip side of that, the Bears were the most
- 25:34Speaker 1: impressive thing I saw all Sunday. Yep. And Ben Johnson
- 25:37Speaker 1: says there's another gear for that offense. I can't imagine
- 25:40Speaker 1: there is because Buddy Carolina had no clue how to
- 25:43Speaker 1: slow them down. Up and down the field.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Going into the season, he wanted to break the all-time
- 25:49Speaker 2: scoring record.
- 25:49Speaker 1: He's well on his way.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Do you guys know who has it?
- 25:52Speaker 1: I have no clue. I would say the... Is it
- 25:57Speaker 1: the greatest show on turf? The greatest show on turf,
- 25:59Speaker 1: the Rams.
- 25:59Speaker 2: The 2013 Denver Broncos averaged 38 points a game. And
- 26:04Speaker 2: 59 points from the Berries yesterday.
- 26:06Speaker 4: And how about this? Colston Loveland, your leading receiver, had
- 26:09Speaker 4: zero catches.
- 26:09Speaker 3: I know.
- 26:10Speaker 4: So, I mean, this offense can be really, really good.
- 26:12Speaker 1: That works because you can tell he's trying to set
- 26:15Speaker 1: the record because he didn't let his defense stay out
- 26:18Speaker 1: there very long because they were letting Carolina score quickly.
- 26:22Speaker 4: That's the thing.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Carolina ended up tying that game in the first half.
- 26:25Speaker 2: I had the Panthers plus the points. Obviously, it looks
- 26:27Speaker 2: like a terrible play. The first half was tremendous to watch.
- 26:30Speaker 4: It was great.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I thought Bryce Young and Dave Canales, they're on the
- 26:32Speaker 2: same page. I just didn't realize how good this Bears
- 26:35Speaker 2: offense is because the back end of Carolina's defense, that secondary–
- 26:39Speaker 2: is really, really good. But the Bears, I mean, they
- 26:42Speaker 2: just absolutely gashed them. 291 rushing yards?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Yeah, 200-yard rushers in an NFL game? That's crazy. That's
- 26:48Speaker 1: pretty hard to do. You mentioned LaFleur, the head coach
- 26:51Speaker 1: at Arizona. He becomes the first Cardinals head coach since
- 26:54Speaker 1: 1973 to win his first game as the Cardinals head coach,
- 26:59Speaker 1: and they beat a really good Chargers team. I guess.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I guess. Yeah, they're supposed to be. They wiped out
- 27:08Speaker 1: a lot of survivor pools, I'll tell you that. That
- 27:10Speaker 1: was you. You were the only one that lost in
- 27:11Speaker 1: our survivor pool. Bills and Texans was supposed to be
- 27:15Speaker 1: the marquee game on Sunday of the weekend, and it
- 27:19Speaker 1: was an entertaining game. I'm surprised that D'Amico's Ryan's defense
- 27:23Speaker 1: looked the way it looked for the Texans.
- 27:24Speaker 2: This is what Josh Allen does, though. I mean, Josh
- 27:26Speaker 2: Allen to go out on the road against this defense, 20-29,
- 27:28Speaker 2: 334 yards, four total touchdowns. What a fun game. And then,
- 27:34Speaker 2: you know, unfortunately for C.J. Stroud, he played a really,
- 27:37Speaker 2: really good game against what is probably an average Bills defense.
- 27:42Speaker 2: But he was 26 of 38, a couple of touches,
- 27:45Speaker 2: no picks, and then he had the strip sack to
- 27:47Speaker 2: end the game.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I mean, on the final meaningful possession for the Bills,
- 27:51Speaker 1: they actually got the ball back at the end there.
- 27:53Speaker 1: But the final meaningful possession for the Bills, the defense
- 27:57Speaker 1: actually had a chance to maybe win that game. Josh
- 27:59Speaker 1: Allen just throws one up for grabs in the end zone.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Yep.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And one of the better DBs in the game drops it.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I think every part of his body touched it, and
- 28:07Speaker 1: it finally hits the ground. And if you intercept that,
- 28:10Speaker 1: the Bills still have their timeouts. I think there was
- 28:12Speaker 1: 140 to go. It's more than likely over, though. Yeah,
- 28:15Speaker 1: there's a chance they can get the ball back and
- 28:17Speaker 1: would only need a field goal. But still, you've got
- 28:20Speaker 1: a chance to close the game out if you're Houston
- 28:22Speaker 1: right there.
- 28:22Speaker 4: But that very well could be a preview for the
- 28:24Speaker 4: AFC championship.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a fantastic game. Yeah, that is my
- 28:28Speaker 1: AFC championship. I had the Texans making the Super Bowl.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Defense will have to get better. Don't know if the
- 28:33Speaker 1: offense can continue to do it. Continue with our NFL
- 28:37Speaker 1: conversation here. Derrick Henry, who played at Alabama just down
- 28:42Speaker 1: the road from where our show originates here, became the
- 28:45Speaker 1: third all-time touchdown rusher, 125 now, behind only Emmett and
- 28:51Speaker 1: LaDainian Tomlinson. He doesn't seem to be slowing down yet.
- 28:57Speaker 1: He's beating time, it looks like.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy that Derrick Henry yesterday was absolutely— I mean,
- 29:04Speaker 2: it looked like Derrick Henry with the Titans 10 years ago.
- 29:07Speaker 2: I mean, 24 carries, which is a lot of carries—
- 29:10Speaker 2: 144 yards, 6 yards per carry, and 3 touchdowns.
- 29:14Speaker 4: And we're talking about a dude that is 32. You
- 29:16Speaker 4: guys remember.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I mean, really, it was like Bermuda Triangle for running
- 29:20Speaker 2: backs when they hit that age of 30. But I
- 29:22Speaker 2: don't think anybody's going to question his work ethic offseason,
- 29:26Speaker 2: what he does, and his diet, and his training, and everything.
- 29:30Speaker 4: But man, what a weapon to have for Baltimore. They
- 29:32Speaker 4: need it.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Jacoby Lane goes out with the wrist injury you got
- 29:35Speaker 2: a bunch of no names outside of Zay Flowers and
- 29:37Speaker 2: Rashad Bateman running routes so you know it was a
- 29:41Speaker 2: impressive debut for Jesse Mender as a head coach but
- 29:45Speaker 2: Derrick Henry's gonna be a big part of.
- 29:46Speaker 1: This so Henry's at 125 now to get to number
- 29:50Speaker 1: two he's got 20 more touchdowns to get 145 He
- 29:54Speaker 1: can get there, you think? I think so, because that
- 29:56Speaker 1: would probably be the rest of this season and part
- 29:58Speaker 1: of next season.
- 29:58Speaker 4: It would be next year, yeah.
- 29:59Speaker 1: But, I mean, does he look like he's close to retirement?
- 30:02Speaker 1: Do you? It certainly does not look like the end
- 30:04Speaker 1: of his career.
- 30:04Speaker 4: I think he still enjoys it.
- 30:06Speaker 1: And then Emmitt played some cardinal years after the Cowboys
- 30:10Speaker 1: and got to 164. He's 164 on the table. How
- 30:14Speaker 1: far behind is he from that? That would be 25, 35.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it would be basically 34.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so he would need this season 27 and 28.
- 30:28Speaker 4: I mean, is he going to play until he's 35?
- 30:30Speaker 1: I don't know. Well, I mean, Emmitt had some years
- 30:34Speaker 1: where he wasn't running back one, really. He was still
- 30:37Speaker 1: in a Cardinals uniform, still productive. But when you're chasing
- 30:42Speaker 1: a record like that, I wonder how long Henry will
- 30:44Speaker 1: hold on. So just a quick answer, do you think
- 30:46Speaker 1: he gets to Emmitt or not? No, I think he'll
- 30:47Speaker 1: finish second all time. You think he'll pass Tomlinson? Yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I would think he passes LT, but he does not
- 30:53Speaker 1: get it. That is a first ballot in Canton when
- 30:55Speaker 1: you do that, by the way, and he's probably already there. Yeah,
- 30:57Speaker 1: I would say so. Okay, first time in 16 years
- 31:01Speaker 1: Jets and Giants win. Giants look good. Geno back with
- 31:04Speaker 1: the Jets, and finally they're getting their money's worth out
- 31:07Speaker 1: of Geno.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Well, not only is it an upgrade for the Jets
- 31:11Speaker 2: at quarterback with Geno, But you're also playing the Titans.
- 31:15Speaker 2: And the Titans, when it's all said and done outside
- 31:17Speaker 2: of the Dolphins, might be the worst team in the league.
- 31:19Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Cam Ward struggles yesterday. But Brees Hall, Garrett Wilson, nice games.
- 31:25Speaker 2: And the Jets are going to be better offensively with Geno.
- 31:28Speaker 1: That was one of the more surprising outcomes of the weekend.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Not necessarily that the Jets won, but that they won
- 31:32Speaker 1: by that margin. And that was a charity touchdown at
- 31:34Speaker 1: the end for the Titans. That game was not close.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I mean, the Jets worked the Titans. And that was very,
- 31:39Speaker 1: very surprising to me.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I mean, under 200 yards of offense at home.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I mean, explain that. Terrible. I mean, I'm with Lance.
- 31:48Speaker 1: You know the Dolphins are the worst team in the NFL,
- 31:50Speaker 1: but the Titans are going to be right there with them.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Way too early to start questioning whether Cam Ward was
- 31:54Speaker 1: a mistake or not. You know it's awful. Yeah.
- 31:57Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know what. You go out and
- 31:58Speaker 2: you get Cornell Tate. At least Cornell Tate finally had
- 32:01Speaker 2: some reception.
- 32:02Speaker 3: It's true.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Didn't do that in the preseason. It wasn't a lot.
- 32:03Speaker 2: You don't have what you would consider one of the
- 32:07Speaker 2: top 20, 25 running backs in the league.
- 32:09Speaker 4: And Tony Pollard. I don't know what to expect from
- 32:11Speaker 4: the Titans.
- 32:12Speaker 1: We expected the Jags to go away this year because
- 32:15Speaker 1: they seem to be a franchise that rides a roller coaster. Now,
- 32:18Speaker 1: they were benefited by playing the Cleveland Browns with Deshaun Watson,
- 32:22Speaker 1: but the Jags took a belt to the ass of
- 32:25Speaker 1: the Browns.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't really think they would go away just
- 32:28Speaker 2: because of how good Trevor Lawrence was in the second
- 32:30Speaker 2: half with Liam Cohen, and that continued. I mean, he was, again,
- 32:34Speaker 2: as you said, it was the Browns. Deshaun Watson is awful,
- 32:38Speaker 2: but Trevor was really, really good. I mean, Almost had
- 32:41Speaker 2: as many touchdowns as drops. 18 of 23, four touchdowns.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And I cannot imagine how loud the noise is in
- 32:46Speaker 1: Cleveland right now because Deshaun Watson already is... We discussed
- 32:50Speaker 1: in the offseason. I know, and I thought about this.
- 32:52Speaker 3: That.
- 32:53Speaker 1: You let Deshaun look the way he looked these first
- 32:55Speaker 1: two games in Shurdur Day's view in the Cleveland opener
- 32:58Speaker 1: week three. And I would say it's trending that way
- 33:00Speaker 1: right now.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I mean, there's another game to go, obviously.
- 33:03Speaker 4: But I don't think it's an upgrade.
- 33:04Speaker 2: I think they've got the same situation week in, week out. Yeah,
- 33:08Speaker 2: the Browns are going to be really bad.
- 33:09Speaker 1: But that would be a way to get your fan
- 33:11Speaker 1: base back on your side.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 33:12Speaker 4: You can't start.
- 33:14Speaker 2: After they lose to Tampa more than likely this week,
- 33:16Speaker 2: they can't go 0-2 and have Deshaun Watson roll out
- 33:19Speaker 2: in front of the fans that absolutely hate him.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Deshaun Watson, you're leading Russia yesterday for Cleveland.
- 33:24Speaker 1: That's the problem. I'm concerned about Cincinnati, speaking of Tampa.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I watch that game probably more than anybody else. Bengals
- 33:33Speaker 1: beat the Buccaneers. The Bucs turn it over four times, fumbles.
- 33:38Speaker 1: giving short fields for Cincinnati. Two of their first half
- 33:42Speaker 1: touchdown drives were 32 and 28 yards. In the end,
- 33:46Speaker 1: Joe Burrow had a horrible interception that he threw. He did.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Pick six that allowed that game to be in doubt.
- 33:52Speaker 1: It ended up being like a 33-27 game, but I
- 33:57Speaker 1: don't know if that Cincinnati team is, I mean, this
- 34:00Speaker 1: is as healthy as they're going to be. That's my
- 34:02Speaker 1: team to win that division, and it looks like Baltimore is,
- 34:06Speaker 1: is the cream of the crop again.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Well, it does right now. But again, if Baltimore continues
- 34:10Speaker 2: to get beat up offensively, can Derrick Henry really keep
- 34:13Speaker 2: that going for 17 games? We know the Browns are
- 34:15Speaker 2: going to be bad. The Steelers, they play a backup
- 34:18Speaker 2: in Cooper Russ. They didn't get much going offensively. Aaron
- 34:21Speaker 2: Rodgers said after the game that he thinks that this
- 34:24Speaker 2: could end up being a really explosive offense. I'll believe
- 34:27Speaker 2: it when I see it. But to your point with
- 34:29Speaker 2: the Bengals, Jamar Chase, only two grabs. Chase Brown wasn't
- 34:32Speaker 2: really good yesterday. Burrow was off. That game should have
- 34:35Speaker 2: been a double-digit win easily for the Bengals, but to
- 34:37Speaker 2: pick six, I don't know.
- 34:41Speaker 1: See, I watch it, and to me it should have
- 34:43Speaker 1: been a Buccaneers win. If you don't turn the ball
- 34:45Speaker 1: over four times, they're driving for touchdowns on a couple
- 34:48Speaker 1: of those. To your point, if you're the Buccaneer, or
- 34:50Speaker 1: anybody playing Cincinnati, how often are you going to get
- 34:52Speaker 1: Jamar Chase two catches, 12 yards? That's right. And if
- 34:54Speaker 1: you can't win that game, I don't know how you're
- 34:56Speaker 1: going to beat Cincinnati.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 1: You know, I picked him in the Super Bowl, and
- 35:01Speaker 1: watching that game, I was like, man, did I miss
- 35:04Speaker 1: this pickup. And I watched it, too, because you had
- 35:05Speaker 1: Tampa in the survivor pool, and for a minute it
- 35:08Speaker 1: looked like a good play, and then as Tampa kept
- 35:10Speaker 1: coming back, kept coming back, and then that interception, I'm like, geez,
- 35:12Speaker 1: Tampa could win this game now. And then the Vikings
- 35:15Speaker 1: and Packers, before we talk about tonight's game, Vikings and Packers,
- 35:19Speaker 1: Kylo gets knocked out early on, and Minnesota still wins
- 35:22Speaker 1: the game.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, you go back, and I've never been
- 35:25Speaker 2: a Matt LaFleur guy. They completely dominated the game. Carson
- 35:29Speaker 2: Wentz came in and couldn't do anything, and then he
- 35:32Speaker 2: got into rhythm in the fourth quarter. But you guys
- 35:35Speaker 2: probably saw this. Green Bay kicks the field goal to
- 35:37Speaker 2: go up eight. It's an offsides penalty in the floor.
- 35:41Speaker 4: I get it.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Take the points off the board if you've got a
- 35:43Speaker 2: first and ten, but it's a fourth and one at
- 35:46Speaker 2: that point. You run a quarterback sneak with Jordan Love,
- 35:48Speaker 2: which these quarterback sneaks with guys that aren't Josh Allen
- 35:52Speaker 2: or Jalen Hurts don't work. And you get shut down
- 35:55Speaker 2: there and everything flipped around. The penalties were awful yesterday
- 35:58Speaker 2: for Green Bay. Carson Wentz, again, played a really, really
- 36:01Speaker 2: good fourth quarter. But Jordan Love was carving up Brian Flores' defense. Like,
- 36:06Speaker 2: that game was over.
- 36:07Speaker 6: That is.
- 36:08Speaker 1: I'm with you. When you're up eight, taking points off
- 36:11Speaker 1: the board just seems like a... If it's first and ten...
- 36:14Speaker 1: I think about it.
- 36:15Speaker 4: But taking points off to go for a fourth and one,
- 36:18Speaker 4: and you're up eight.
- 36:19Speaker 1: I mean, there's nothing that can cost you the lead
- 36:22Speaker 1: at that point, and you take points off the board.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I did think the officiating was home field for Minnesota.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Some of the calls, the roughing the passer, that should
- 36:31Speaker 2: have been a flip over for Green Bay on a turnover.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Then they had a holding in the end zone that
- 36:36Speaker 2: wasn't a hold on a pick. Like, they got some awful,
- 36:38Speaker 2: awful calls, but they shouldn't have been in that situation.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Tonight we get Denver and Kansas City, and surprising if
- 36:44Speaker 1: you were with us in June or July, we were
- 36:46Speaker 1: questioning whether or not we would get Bo Nix and
- 36:48Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes. So it looks like we're getting Bo Nix
- 36:50Speaker 1: and Patrick Mahomes tonight. Mahomes coming back. 7-15 Central on ESPN,
- 36:55Speaker 1: 8-15 Eastern there in Kansas City. What are you expecting tonight?
- 36:59Speaker 4: Khalil Benson. Do you guys know the name?
- 37:01Speaker 1: I do not, Lance. He's a— great baker who lives
- 37:05Speaker 1: in kansas.
- 37:06Speaker 2: City i didn't know his name either he is going
- 37:08Speaker 2: to be your starting left tackle tonight for kansas city's
- 37:10Speaker 2: an undrafted rookie they have more.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Tackle issues than anybody i've ever seen well this.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Is a problem like josh simmons is out now with
- 37:17Speaker 2: the back you're starting left tackle so you've got an
- 37:19Speaker 2: undrafted rookie that is going to start tonight against a
- 37:23Speaker 2: broncos defense that led the league in sacks and your
- 37:26Speaker 2: quarterback's coming off an acl yeah and their right.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Tackle is always a mystery so you're telling me they've
- 37:31Speaker 1: got uh undrafted The guy they just picked up at
- 37:34Speaker 1: left tackle. And their right tackle is always a swinging gate.
- 37:37Speaker 4: But they're only going against the Broncos.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Right tackle is a swinging gate all the time. They
- 37:42Speaker 1: won Super Bowls with a problem at right tackle. And
- 37:45Speaker 1: a quarterback that is the least healthy he's ever been.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's completely unhealthy. I'm just saying that's
- 37:49Speaker 1: the least he's ever been. To your point, we don't
- 37:50Speaker 1: know how mobile he's gotten.
- 37:51Speaker 5: That's right.
- 37:52Speaker 1: I mean, I saw some stuff in the preseason. I'm like,
- 37:54Speaker 1: he just does not look the same. Yeah, it was
- 37:56Speaker 1: in Achilles, right? It was.
- 37:57Speaker 2: And we don't know about Bo Nixon, that ankle. Like,
- 38:00Speaker 2: you know, he's cleared, but I mean... You know, how
- 38:02Speaker 2: efficient are these quarterbacks going to be?
- 38:04Speaker 1: Well, the good news for Bo, he's not behind the
- 38:06Speaker 1: two Chiefs tackles.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Chiefs are in Arrowhead tonight. We've got a seven-star on
- 38:10Speaker 4: this game.
- 38:10Speaker 3: By the way.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Oh, minus two and a half. Back to a seven-star.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Thought maybe that would have been an eight or a nine-star. LanceIsLike.com.
- 38:16Speaker 1: LanceIsLike.com if you want to see what that seven-star play
- 38:18Speaker 1: is on Monday Night Football. Two quick other NFL thoughts
- 38:22Speaker 1: from me here. One, of all the things you can
- 38:25Speaker 1: do in the National Football League during dances and celebration,
- 38:29Speaker 1: I'm with Stephon Diggs. Dick says it was his fault
- 38:33Speaker 1: that he's been in the league so long that it
- 38:36Speaker 1: used to not be a rule, but it is now. Apparently,
- 38:38Speaker 1: you can't go and jump on the goalpost cushion that
- 38:43Speaker 1: cost them a chance to, he thinks, win the football game.
- 38:47Speaker 1: He says, my bad on that one. So the commanders
- 38:50Speaker 1: end up losing that game 24-22 to Philadelphia. And then
- 38:54Speaker 1: the whole Monday night football, when you're calling out, Your
- 38:58Speaker 1: names when you're introduced, you know, I'm Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I'm Jalen Hurts, Alabama, whichever way you want to go there.
- 39:04Speaker 1: I've got no problem with Quinn and Williams saying Winona
- 39:08Speaker 1: High School, not Alabama. Give your high school a shout-out.
- 39:13Speaker 1: That's great. That's your roots. That's where you came from.
- 39:15Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 39:15Speaker 1: There's more Alabama football players in the NFL than any
- 39:18Speaker 1: other school, so Alabama gets plenty of pub there. I
- 39:22Speaker 1: don't understand George Pickens, though, and he's a local guy
- 39:24Speaker 1: here in Birmingham. Drip City. to say that when everyone
- 39:30Speaker 1: else is saying to college or their neighborhood, their high
- 39:34Speaker 1: school or something. He goes Drip City. And then you
- 39:37Speaker 1: go out and you have two pretty big drops early
- 39:40Speaker 1: in that game for the Cowboys. And it's just too
- 39:43Speaker 1: easy to go Drip City to Drop City on social media.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I would drop literally, the drip city until the Cowboys
- 39:52Speaker 1: start winning again.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Yeah, remember, he's playing for a contract. He's on that
- 39:55Speaker 2: franchise tag right now, so he's making a lot of
- 39:57Speaker 2: money for this year. But it's super important that he's
- 40:00Speaker 2: as productive as he was last year. It does look
- 40:03Speaker 2: like Dak– I mean, his go-to guy is George Pickens.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Yeah, CeeDee Lamb just doesn't get the targets he used to.
- 40:09Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 40:10Speaker 2: I mean, George Pickens did get six targets. CeeDee did
- 40:13Speaker 2: get eight last night. But it was just some weird
- 40:15Speaker 2: play calling for the Cowboys.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with that. I thought the Cowboys would
- 40:19Speaker 1: look a lot better. Giants look great. And we'll put
- 40:21Speaker 1: the end of week one that started back on Wednesday
- 40:25Speaker 1: to bed tonight with the Broncos and the Chiefs. Back
- 40:28Speaker 1: to college football. Alabama's win in Lexington to start SEC play. Hey,
- 40:33Speaker 1: right now, number one team in the SEC in the standings, Alabama.
- 40:37Speaker 1: We'll talk about them the next part of the next round,
- 40:41Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sporting State. Boy, I
- 40:44Speaker 1: watched Oklahoma and Michigan in the big noon kickoff, and
- 40:49Speaker 1: I thought two things. One, thank God Joel Klatt finally
- 40:53Speaker 1: had a meaningful logo game to do on the big
- 40:56Speaker 1: noon kickoff. Joel will be with us at 1230 Eastern,
- 40:57Speaker 1: 1130 Central. On the next round part of the show
- 41:01Speaker 1: at next round live on all the platforms. Because they
- 41:04Speaker 1: had a horrible game in week one. They get Kent
- 41:07Speaker 1: State and Ohio State this week. Jeez, I'm pissed off
- 41:10Speaker 1: at Ohio State team too.
- 41:11Speaker 4: God, you got to listen to Gus.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Kent State, Ohio State this week. Joel will be with
- 41:19Speaker 1: us later on. But Oklahoma, Michigan, I'm watching that game.
- 41:22Speaker 1: And I'm going to be sold by everyone who watches
- 41:28Speaker 1: college football that Those were two good teams. Were those
- 41:32Speaker 1: two good teams?
- 41:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so. I think Oklahoma's good.
- 41:35Speaker 1: I really do.
- 41:36Speaker 4: The offense has got problems.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Satania has got to have more than five touches, especially
- 41:41Speaker 2: on the road in a situation like that.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Okay, first, so you're saying play calling is a problem.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Yeah, Ben Arbuckle is a problem.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a problem. I think Mateer is a good,
- 41:52Speaker 1: solid college quarterback. You were getting in the chat room
- 41:55Speaker 1: today on Monday Morning Live. which airs before our show
- 41:59Speaker 1: that's on now, every Monday with Tom Luganville. The chat
- 42:03Speaker 1: room wanted to know, will Lance, when the next round starts,
- 42:07Speaker 1: give up his love of John Matera? It does not
- 42:09Speaker 1: sound like you are.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Well, it was never love. I thought he would be improved. Like,
- 42:13Speaker 2: how was he not improved? I think their offensive line
- 42:16Speaker 2: is bad. They still can't really run the football, so
- 42:18Speaker 2: there's a lot of pressure on Matera. He made the
- 42:20Speaker 2: one horrible read on the Jair Hill pick there. I mean,
- 42:25Speaker 2: that was the difference in the game.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Fourth quarter interception in your own go zone.
- 42:29Speaker 4: But I thought he hit Rocky.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Beers in stride. Like, if Beers makes that grab, and
- 42:33Speaker 2: you've got to continue to go to Beers. Beers and
- 42:35Speaker 2: Satania have got to be the offense. But if he
- 42:37Speaker 2: makes that grab and Klatt pointed that out with his
- 42:40Speaker 2: athleticism and his size, there's a good chance he takes
- 42:42Speaker 2: it to the house.
- 42:43Speaker 1: But the flip side of that, and this Oklahoma team
- 42:45Speaker 1: is why I did not buy into them in the preseason,
- 42:47Speaker 1: why I said they would be the team that would
- 42:49Speaker 1: start in the top ten and fall out. Ben Arbuckle
- 42:51Speaker 1: and John Mateer, I've never been a believer in them. Well,
- 42:54Speaker 1: hold that bucket because that may happen. I continue not
- 42:56Speaker 1: to be a believer in them. That is a bad offense.
- 42:59Speaker 1: When the chips are down, that can be a very
- 43:00Speaker 1: bad offense. Oklahoma's not even in that game without those
- 43:04Speaker 1: two knucklehead 15-yard penalties. I mean, they have got Oklahoma
- 43:08Speaker 1: pinned down, Michigan does. Oklahoma's about to have to punt
- 43:11Speaker 1: it back to them at midfield. and you get a
- 43:14Speaker 1: knucklehead 15-yard personal foul penalty. I mean, just stupid. But
- 43:19Speaker 1: it was a legitimate penalty. You tell me it gives
- 43:23Speaker 1: us that it is the SEC crew, which you have
- 43:25Speaker 1: to do, but I thought that was a spectacularly officiated game. Yeah,
- 43:29Speaker 1: but that was a penalty.
- 43:31Speaker 2: This won't be a popular comment, but you guys tell
- 43:33Speaker 2: me outside of Georgia, who in the SEC, with the
- 43:38Speaker 2: hornet's nest they were rolling into, With Michigan having so
- 43:42Speaker 2: much to prove, that is a really, really good Michigan defense.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Who in the SEC would have gone in there and
- 43:46Speaker 4: had no problem? Everybody would have struggled.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I'm not going to say nobody has no problem, but
- 43:50Speaker 1: I'm just saying.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Alabama loses that game.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Oh, Alabama doesn't lose that game. Are you kidding me?
- 43:57Speaker 1: Alabama doesn't lose to Michigan? Yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 3: No.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Michigan doesn't get the points they got against Alabama's defense.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Alabama was down to Kentucky at half.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Kentucky is not a good team.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:07Speaker 4: They're on the road, just like you would have been
- 44:08Speaker 4: up there. Michigan's on the road.
- 44:10Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 44:10Speaker 4: That's a difficult place to play.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. I agree with Lance. There's a lot
- 44:14Speaker 1: of SEC teams that would have struggled in there. But
- 44:16Speaker 1: Oklahoma has not fixed offense. Arkansas would have struggled. Well, Arkansas.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Vanderbilt would have struggled. Okay. 14 other teams walk out
- 44:23Speaker 1: of there with a win. 14 other teams. You are crazy.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Michigan is not a good football team. They're not, but
- 44:30Speaker 1: I'm not going to say 14 other teams walk out
- 44:31Speaker 1: of there with a win.
- 44:32Speaker 2: I mean, they've got a hell of a coach, and
- 44:34Speaker 2: they're struggling offensively, no doubt. I mean, I think Michigan's
- 44:37Speaker 2: a 7 or 8 win team.
- 44:38Speaker 1: And on the Mateer thing, Mateer, early in the first half,
- 44:41Speaker 1: he's throwing over receivers left and right.
- 44:44Speaker 4: He looked like Archman in the first half.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Mateer's not a good quarterback. He's not. And Arbuckle, I think,
- 44:49Speaker 1: is in over his head. And that's my concern for Oklahoma.
- 44:52Speaker 1: They're going to have good enough defense always to win.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Venables can coach defense. But I just don't think they're
- 44:56Speaker 1: going to have the offense they need. Again, it's why
- 44:58Speaker 1: I put them where I put them in the preseason.
- 45:01Speaker 1: And through one week, I thought, OK, maybe I've gotten
- 45:04Speaker 1: too negative. Maybe I'm wrong. But then I watch them Saturday.
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm like, nope, that's exactly what I think they are.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Who do you feel like is 100% better than Oklahoma
- 45:11Speaker 2: in the SEC.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Let's listen to Brent Bittables first on the John Mateer conversation. John,
- 45:17Speaker 1: when he has a performance like today, he's obviously going
- 45:19Speaker 1: to receive some negativity or criticism from people, but what
- 45:23Speaker 1: do you see in him?
- 45:23Speaker 8: He's been criticized all offseason. It's not going to be
- 45:26Speaker 8: any worse and any louder than it was before. He's
- 45:29Speaker 8: got to be inside out. He's got to focus on
- 45:31Speaker 8: the things that he can control, and we've got to
- 45:34Speaker 8: focus on the things that we can control and find
- 45:36Speaker 8: the ways.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Again, the.
- 45:40Speaker 8: Magnifying glass the right way to find out, again, incrementally,
- 45:44Speaker 8: how can we get better? And I know he'll do that,
- 45:47Speaker 8: and we'll do that.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Who do I think is better in Oklahoma, your question?
- 45:51Speaker 1: A lot of coaches speak right there. Georgia, Texas, LSU, Alabama,
- 45:55Speaker 1: Ole Miss, Texas A & M, Tennessee, Florida. And then
- 45:59Speaker 1: I debate Missouri and South Carolina.
- 46:01Speaker 4: Were you watching games this weekend?
- 46:02Speaker 1: I watched every one. I watched every second of that
- 46:04Speaker 1: Oklahoma game. I watched almost every second of Western Michigan
- 46:08Speaker 1: and Michigan.
- 46:09Speaker 4: I mean, I told you.
- 46:10Speaker 1: So to me, I'm watching Oklahoma lose to an 0-1
- 46:14Speaker 1: Michigan team.
- 46:15Speaker 4: You can't compare. You know that.
- 46:18Speaker 2: With all that said, I told you Oklahoma was going
- 46:20Speaker 2: to lose this game. You did say that, and you
- 46:22Speaker 2: stuck by it on Saturday. I think they're still going
- 46:24Speaker 2: to win. I mean, their schedule is brutal, but I
- 46:26Speaker 2: still think they win nine games.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I may not go as deep as Jim, but Oklahoma
- 46:30Speaker 1: is not one of the three or four or five
- 46:31Speaker 1: best teams in the SEC.
- 46:32Speaker 2: I've got them at five right now. I think there's
- 46:34Speaker 2: definitely three better.
- 46:36Speaker 1: So there's four you will definitely say.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, look, the offense is more of a
- 46:40Speaker 4: problem than I thought it would be.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and here's where Arbuckle, I'm like, you guys were
- 46:45Speaker 1: both watching, just like I was. End of the first half,
- 46:48Speaker 1: you're out near midfield. You've got a third down. And
- 46:51Speaker 1: even Klatt was like, what are they doing here? And
- 46:54Speaker 1: I texted Klatt. I was, as Klatt is saying it,
- 46:57Speaker 1: I texted Klatt and I'm like, what is Oklahoma doing?
- 47:00Speaker 1: And Klatt responded at halftime. He was like, it was
- 47:02Speaker 1: almost like they were playing. not to make a mistake
- 47:06Speaker 1: that let's don't make a mistake and give up a
- 47:07Speaker 1: score and you're like this is the best field position
- 47:10Speaker 1: you've had all game it's right at the half yeah
- 47:13Speaker 1: it's easily the best field position because michigan was keeping
- 47:15Speaker 1: them pinned down their starting position yeah was uh 30
- 47:19Speaker 1: or are closer to their goal line yeah and this
- 47:21Speaker 1: is the best field position you had lansing you're right
- 47:22Speaker 1: at the half so even if you do make a
- 47:24Speaker 1: mistake chances michigan takes advantage of it pretty low with
- 47:27Speaker 1: bryce underwood playing quarterback he was remarkably the worst quarterback
- 47:31Speaker 1: in the game.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Cetania bailed them out of so many bad spots last
- 47:34Speaker 2: year en route to go into a college football playoff
- 47:36Speaker 2: when they didn't have any offense. I'm just surprised because
- 47:38Speaker 2: he's like Malachi, Tony, like light, light, light, light, light
- 47:42Speaker 2: as Cetania.
- 47:43Speaker 4: But if you're Arbuckle, five touches? Like that guy.
- 47:46Speaker 1: But here's where Cetania helps you too is in punt returns.
- 47:49Speaker 1: And he could never return one because Oklahoma was constantly
- 47:51Speaker 1: getting pinned down on the lines. And here's your problem
- 47:54Speaker 1: if you're an Oklahoma fan. You had Lincoln Riley. For
- 47:59Speaker 1: years and years and years. And what did Lincoln Riley
- 48:01Speaker 1: not care about?
- 48:02Speaker 4: Defense.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Defense. And now you've got Brent Venables. Not that Brent
- 48:05Speaker 1: doesn't care about offense. But you flipped the script. But
- 48:08Speaker 1: now you've got the anti-Lincoln Riley. That's right. It's like
- 48:11Speaker 1: you're caught in, okay, God, if we just have a
- 48:14Speaker 1: good defense for all those years, if we just have
- 48:15Speaker 1: a good defense. Now you've got this great defense and
- 48:18Speaker 1: you're like, God, I miss offense. Yeah, boy, I wish
- 48:21Speaker 1: we could score points.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Well, I mean, they thought that Mateer and, you know,
- 48:25Speaker 2: to get Mateer, they thought that Arbuckle, this was almost like,
- 48:29Speaker 2: You guys remember this, and this ties Lincoln Riley back together,
- 48:32Speaker 2: when Dabo goes out and hires Garrett Riley, the hot
- 48:36Speaker 2: offensive coordinator.
- 48:37Speaker 4: And that was Arbuckle, and it was kind of a
- 48:38Speaker 4: package deal, obviously, last year.
- 48:41Speaker 2: But I fully expect there's going to be multiple offensive
- 48:45Speaker 2: coordinator changes in the SEC.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I could see that. When Arbuckle came and Mateer came,
- 48:52Speaker 1: They thought they were getting offense. When I got a
- 48:54Speaker 1: gym membership, I thought I was getting abs. They didn't
- 48:56Speaker 1: get an offense, and I didn't get abs this weekend.
- 48:59Speaker 1: You've got to call plays, and you've got to go
- 49:01Speaker 1: to the gym. Yeah. I want to ask you about
- 49:04Speaker 1: one other game before we get to Alabama in our
- 49:08Speaker 1: next segment. In college football, there's one thing you count on.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Iowa State's going to play a close game.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Death taxes and Cy Hawk being within three points.
- 49:20Speaker 1: And it's and also it's usually not gonna be a
- 49:22Speaker 1: whole lot of points I kept looking at my TV
- 49:25Speaker 1: it was on TV too for me so I'm watching
- 49:28Speaker 1: all the craziness as that comeback's happening and I keep
- 49:31Speaker 1: looking over and one time I literally had to just
- 49:34Speaker 1: to make sure the clock was moving. I had to
- 49:36Speaker 1: squint my eyes and make sure the clock was moving
- 49:38Speaker 1: because it looked like they were in midfield and the
- 49:41Speaker 1: score hadn't changed in a long, long time.
- 49:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 49:44Speaker 1: You thought maybe it had frozen up. It's such a
- 49:46Speaker 1: great rivalry game, and it means so much to the
- 49:48Speaker 1: people of Iowa. There just doesn't seem like a whole
- 49:51Speaker 1: lot that goes on when they're actually playing the game.
- 49:53Speaker 2: I give Jimmy Rogers a lot of credit that Iowa
- 49:56Speaker 2: State was in that game.
- 49:57Speaker 4: I mean, they were a two-touchdown dog.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And they lost everybody, for those who don't know, right? Everybody.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Most of them went to Penn State.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Anybody that was worth anything left Ames and went to
- 50:08Speaker 2: College Station with Matt Campbell. I told you guys watching
- 50:11Speaker 2: Iowa last week, their defense really, really good.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Hank Brown's awful.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Yeah. We're talking Iowa football, right?
- 50:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:18Speaker 1: They've got a good defensive back quarterback.
- 50:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:20Speaker 1: He did fall into the end zone for a touchdown.
- 50:23Speaker 1: It's every year. It's every year. Good defense, no offense.
- 50:25Speaker 4: And they've got a really good– Kamari Moulton's a really
- 50:27Speaker 4: good running back.
- 50:28Speaker 1: They're a poor man's Oklahoma.
- 50:31Speaker 4: Now, they will end up beating somebody they shouldn't this year.
- 50:33Speaker 1: They will because that's what Kirk French does. By the way,
- 50:34Speaker 1: there's a path to the playoffs for Iowa because of
- 50:37Speaker 1: the problem Oregon and Ohio State inherited this weekend. So
- 50:41Speaker 1: that puts Oregon in a bad place. The Big Ten's
- 50:44Speaker 1: going to usually get three– they're going to get three
- 50:46Speaker 1: at least, maybe four. Can you be– Penn State, Iowa, USC,
- 50:51Speaker 1: that door flew open with that Oregon loss this weekend.
- 50:53Speaker 1: They benefited. We'll talk more about that later on. Before
- 50:56Speaker 1: we get to the top of the hour here, Albie
- 50:59Speaker 1: is the mascot at Auburn. He is fantastic. But when
- 51:02Speaker 1: it comes to actual sheer strength, Cosmo at BYU, and
- 51:09Speaker 1: it's different people all the time and different people even
- 51:12Speaker 1: through the game, but this mascot does some things. Look
- 51:15Speaker 1: at this. He's got weights stacked on top of each other.
- 51:18Speaker 1: So you've got to have balance. LT, you're the strongest
- 51:20Speaker 1: one on the table. You've got to be able to
- 51:23Speaker 1: have balance and strength to do that. Now, if you're shaky,
- 51:32Speaker 1: that can bend and fall.
- 51:33Speaker 2: That's like gymnast stuff. I mean, you probably have one
- 51:36Speaker 2: in a thousand that can do stuff like that. Like
- 51:39Speaker 2: that core strength and the upper body strength is crazy.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Look at that. And look, those are the legit weights
- 51:45Speaker 1: that are stacked on top of each other. Just to
- 51:47Speaker 1: stand on them is amazing. Yeah, the balance, everything.
- 51:50Speaker 4: For the future, though, they might want to give the
- 51:52Speaker 4: tail some structure.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Well, nope.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Nope.
- 51:55Speaker 1: It had structure. You beat me to the punch. We
- 51:59Speaker 1: have a still photo from the side.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 52:01Speaker 1: From the side. All right. Kids, cover the kids' eyes.
- 52:05Speaker 1: There's the problem with the tail from the side, Tyler.
- 52:07Speaker 1: You'll see it here in five seconds.
- 52:08Speaker 4: He might want to tie that in a knot.
- 52:12Speaker 1: For those that are wondering, Cosmo's a.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Boy.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Boy cougar there at BYU. Beautiful place to watch a game.
- 52:19Speaker 1: I always want to go to a game there. And
- 52:21Speaker 1: that was a good win for BYU over Arizona. They
- 52:24Speaker 1: are the best. I think nothing but rising success for
- 52:30Speaker 1: BYU the rest of the season. Soak it all in, boys.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Soak it all in. We move to segment number two
- 52:35Speaker 1: where we'll probably tell you about XXXY all coming up here.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Back in a moment.
