Latest / Foul Territory / Bob Nightengale on Padres signing Lucas Giolito + Cubs streak good, Phillies & Mets streak ugly

- 0:03Speaker 1: So I was going to mention how we have our
- 0:05Speaker 1: resident second base from Jason Kipness for the day here
- 0:08Speaker 1: for a couple hours. He's also our resident restaurant tour
- 0:12Speaker 1: and I was going to tell you how I think
- 0:13Speaker 1: you probably should have invested in this other industry called
- 0:17Speaker 1: baseball teams. I was curious to just get your quick
- 0:20Speaker 1: hit or thought, as you are a businessman and entrepreneur,
- 0:23Speaker 1: what about the padres selling for three point nine billion dollars,
- 0:26Speaker 1: which smashes the record two point four to two for
- 0:29Speaker 1: the I can't win a game Mets, But the Forbes
- 0:33Speaker 1: report had them at three point one bill, which was
- 0:35Speaker 1: fifty nine percent above the year before. So basically stock
- 0:39Speaker 1: soared right and in twenty twelve they bought him for
- 0:42Speaker 1: I think it was like eight hundred mil. I'm going
- 0:44Speaker 1: to butcher the number, but it was nothing close to
- 0:47Speaker 1: what it is now. So just wanted to get your
- 0:49Speaker 1: thoughts on how that all went down, as I did
- 0:51Speaker 1: spend a lot of time last night going through their
- 0:53Speaker 1: books for some reason. I was on a flight for
- 0:55Speaker 1: a while and just looked and I was like, wait
- 0:56Speaker 1: a second. A lot of people that are saying, oh,
- 0:59Speaker 1: they just got bought for much higher price because they're
- 1:01Speaker 1: in California. Are forgetting that. Places like Forbes don't like
- 1:04Speaker 1: up the value BA. They just are up to upping
- 1:06Speaker 1: the value based on what is their reported public revenue.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I know that you can't see all the books behind,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but you can see a lot in terms of attendance
- 1:13Speaker 1: and TV money. Their local TV money is almost nothing.
- 1:16Speaker 1: So anyway, long story short, if I bought the team KIP,
- 1:18Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh damn, twenty twenty nine, you're gonna
- 1:20Speaker 1: suddenly get like two hundred million in local media money
- 1:24Speaker 1: when they package it all together.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Side story, before I even answer that I once I retired,
- 1:32Speaker 2: I actually did try to become a part owner in
- 1:35Speaker 2: a team. I will not mention there was. It's it's
- 1:39Speaker 2: a it's a big money, big market game. There are
- 1:42Speaker 2: multiple commas that are needed to get in it. It
- 1:44Speaker 2: is people with a lot more money than I have
- 1:47Speaker 2: or made in my career. These are big boy checks
- 1:51Speaker 2: being written by a lot of guys who just are
- 1:54Speaker 2: throwing around money. It is a about as safe of
- 1:59Speaker 2: a owner's If you're not, they're not losing money. I'll
- 2:01Speaker 2: put it that way. Just by owning the team inflation. Uh,
- 2:04Speaker 2: TV deals, everything that goes into it, everybody who may
- 2:09Speaker 2: puts money into a ownership, they're gonna they're gonna be
- 2:12Speaker 2: coming out with a profit, uh ten, fifteen, twenty years, however,
- 2:15Speaker 2: however long they they keep it, so in forty years
- 2:20Speaker 2: or whatever. If you have this, if this show is
- 2:22Speaker 2: still going, you're gonna have the same conversation about whoever
- 2:24Speaker 2: buys the Padres and that number is gonna be double
- 2:27Speaker 2: whatever it is right now.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Right, We're gonna be like all the Padres are worth
- 2:30Speaker 1: nine billion dollars.
- 2:32Speaker 2: That's just how it's gonna be going. It's it's they're there,
- 2:36Speaker 2: it's big, it's big money people doing big money stuff.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Or it's just these are these are conversations. Yeah, we're not.
- 2:43Speaker 2: We're not privy to too many of these conversations. And
- 2:45Speaker 2: I was a very small, small fraction that I was
- 2:48Speaker 2: trying to get in on. But uh no, every every
- 2:51Speaker 2: team is just gonna be going up and up.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you're wrong, Kip. There's no way they're making any money.
- 2:59Speaker 3: There's no way they're making any money because they need
- 3:02Speaker 3: a salary cap. They need to be able to keep
- 3:04Speaker 3: key player salaries to a minimum, like they're just they
- 3:08Speaker 3: don't make any money, and it's unfair when teams make money,
- 3:12Speaker 3: so we definitely have a salary cap. Unfair, let's be honest.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I'm still curious about Kip being in on an ownership group.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I know we're not going to get the team. That's fine,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but I.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Know you don't Long Island.
- 3:28Speaker 4: I'm looking.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'm looking at the commat section from us. It wasn't
- 3:31Speaker 2: no one. No one has said the right team yet.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, I would I would consult
- 3:37Speaker 2: you first before I ever went near that team. That
- 3:41Speaker 2: is your leg Yeah, most I know.
- 3:45Speaker 3: More of the International League than than the other leagues.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs going there on Friday, I
- 3:53Speaker 3: think they're the most profitable minor league team.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I think is that right?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Maybe? Yeah? There are either one or two. It bounces
- 4:02Speaker 3: toward them.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And they always do very well that they they run
- 4:06Speaker 2: a good tip over there, they run a good production.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I do my memories.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yep.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, do not call or do not avoid Crats if
- 4:17Speaker 1: you're looking into any minor league teams, he should be
- 4:19Speaker 1: one of your first phone calls to consult.
- 4:22Speaker 2: He'll give you the tour of every home locker room
- 4:24Speaker 2: that you need.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah, mostly visiting locker rooms.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Mostly to warn you, right, the water fountain in the
- 4:32Speaker 1: upper left quadrant of the visiting clubhouse is a little
- 4:36Speaker 1: bit leaky, so you might want to be careful. In
- 4:39Speaker 1: doc ten thousand dollars from your.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Big We're never going to get to the show. We're
- 4:43Speaker 3: never going to get to the show. But there was
- 4:45Speaker 3: two two minor league clubhouses that I helped uninstall and
- 4:51Speaker 3: install brand new shower heads so that the boys, so
- 4:55Speaker 3: the boys could enjoy good showers.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Well, there are in the bushes a couple minor league
- 5:01Speaker 2: places where I helped uninstall glass windows and wooden batholders.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I got a sink, and I got a window
- 5:16Speaker 3: in Louisville walking back to the clubhouse, got a window.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Louisville is one of my places. I uh so, it's
- 5:22Speaker 2: a long ramp going up towards the dugout or is
- 5:25Speaker 2: the locker room. Yeah, yep, through sore where we're If
- 5:28Speaker 2: anybody didn't catch on, we're in a slump and we
- 5:31Speaker 2: smashed some stuff with a bat. I threw my bat
- 5:33Speaker 2: and that's yes, and I ricocheted all the way up
- 5:37Speaker 2: and spider web the glass window raped like this is
- 5:40Speaker 2: like a thirty yard ramp. Never thought I would make
- 5:43Speaker 2: it all the way up, and it like like grind
- 5:45Speaker 2: railed the railing all the way up to it. And
- 5:48Speaker 2: I'm like still in the fall through and I just
- 5:49Speaker 2: see a spider web with like a dart in there,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and I was like, huh, it's just make you pay
- 5:55Speaker 2: for it. It's yeah, and immediately snaps you out of
- 5:58Speaker 2: it and you're like, hmm, I shouldn't have done that.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I didn't have to pay for it. And mine was
- 6:02Speaker 3: a baseball because I never went into slumps. Okay, how
- 6:05Speaker 3: about that kip.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You have to hit to go in slumps? You have
- 6:10Speaker 2: to have a Zachary. Yep.
- 6:14Speaker 1: While you guys were step brothering, things have happened, right,
- 6:17Speaker 1: So let's get to it. No, it's okay, it's actually
- 6:19Speaker 1: worked out. For one minute. Vamp that I just got
- 6:21Speaker 1: here actually worked out perfectly. Oh wait, sorry, hold on,
- 6:25Speaker 1: it might need one more second.
- 6:26Speaker 3: We do have one more story.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You guys can keep fighting if you have one, I'll
- 6:30Speaker 1: take thirty seconds.
- 6:31Speaker 3: You actually stop what you're doing when you break something,
- 6:35Speaker 3: when you're or you hurt somebody, when you're having a
- 6:37Speaker 3: roid rage, and it like makes you it makes you
- 6:40Speaker 3: just think like I'm such an idiot.
- 6:42Speaker 2: A well, I still have like a conversation while I
- 6:46Speaker 2: was freaking out, well and I could still I still
- 6:48Speaker 2: have a sense of humor. So I'll be like someone
- 6:51Speaker 2: will be telling a joke, and like my team was
- 6:53Speaker 2: so used used to Cleveland was like Chisenhaul would come
- 6:56Speaker 2: down there and he'll just seem I'll be like bashing
- 6:58Speaker 2: these cabinets and I'd be like, you a little out
- 7:01Speaker 2: in front, and I'll be like, yeah, it was a
- 7:03Speaker 2: curve ball got me a little bit, and then I'll
- 7:05Speaker 2: just go right back to it. But obviously like those
- 7:06Speaker 2: they they know you so well and they know how
- 7:08Speaker 2: to break you so fast out of it as your
- 7:10Speaker 2: your teammates and brothers there that it's like I was
- 7:12Speaker 2: still able to tell a joke. Uh, they were able
- 7:15Speaker 2: to tell jokes to me. I think I picked up Ryan.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I picked up Ryan Rayburn's bat one time and it
- 7:21Speaker 2: was just like it looked like someone had already bashed
- 7:24Speaker 2: something with it, like it was splintering. It was terrible.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And he like calls me out and he's like, hey,
- 7:30Speaker 2: next time you pick up a bat, He's like, how
- 7:31Speaker 2: about you not use my gamer? And I'm like in
- 7:33Speaker 2: the middle of like a hulk rage and I was like, ew,
- 7:36Speaker 2: this is your gamer. Like we all just started laughing,
- 7:39Speaker 2: all the people down there, and so it's good to
- 7:41Speaker 2: have a sense of humor. It's bad to touch anybody else's.
- 7:43Speaker 2: So if anybody is watching and you're playing, only use
- 7:46Speaker 2: your stuff and make sure you're not by anybody. You
- 7:49Speaker 2: can't hurt anybody, and you don't hurt yourself.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Lonnie Chisel Chest.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Going with him to uh Scotland in June to play
- 7:58Speaker 2: Saint Andrews.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Last and don't steal anything.
- 8:05Speaker 1: It's an odd superd and we don't have time for
- 8:11Speaker 1: that story because we have.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Said that that wasn't it wasn't important to me. Just
- 8:15Speaker 2: got why he said that, Okay, got it? Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Free agency continues the USA. Today's Bob Nightingale joining us
- 8:28Speaker 1: right now, and you just saw him tweet out how
- 8:31Speaker 1: the San Diego Padres have linked up with Lucas Giolito,
- 8:35Speaker 1: the last big starting free agent, starting pitching free agent
- 8:38Speaker 1: on the market. Bob, great to have you on. What
- 8:40Speaker 1: can you tell us.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Well, they've been talks for a while and uh I
- 8:45Speaker 4: think kind of waved for the price to drop down.
- 8:48Speaker 4: And then you know, I think the new ownership helps
- 8:50Speaker 4: your new ownerships probably can say, you know what, we
- 8:52Speaker 4: got some money to spend a trade, am I, and
- 8:54Speaker 4: let's spend it now? And uh what the potteries at
- 8:57Speaker 4: one eleven last twelve, I mean, tied with the dog
- 9:00Speaker 4: is right now, and he's just gonna boost that team up.
- 9:03Speaker 4: And I think they needed some depth there. If they
- 9:05Speaker 4: didn't have that depth, I think they might have made
- 9:08Speaker 4: away this this nice boost for him. Now we'll see
- 9:12Speaker 4: how long it'll take Giliano and get ready, it certainly
- 9:14Speaker 4: didn't take Patrick Corbulong.
- 9:18Speaker 1: There are more than seventy thousand events listed on the
- 9:22Speaker 1: sea Geek app, So if you're looking to do basically
- 9:24Speaker 1: anything this spring or summer, there's one place to go.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Seekek has all the concerts, baseball games, World Cup tickets,
- 9:31Speaker 5: whatever you need is on seke. Trust me, I'm gonna
- 9:34Speaker 5: be hitting some concerts and some festivals this summer. I'm
- 9:37Speaker 5: gonna be looking for seek.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I can't wait to see aj g adding the best
- 9:42Speaker 1: tickets he can for concerts and festivals. We'll get plenty
- 9:45Speaker 1: of pictures there but also when he's looking. What he
- 9:47Speaker 1: does is he looks for when he's going to, say
- 9:49Speaker 1: an arena for a concert, a green dot meaning he's
- 9:52Speaker 1: got a good deal in a good spot. That's where
- 9:54Speaker 1: Seekek helps you out. With over thirty five million downloads,
- 9:57Speaker 1: Seekeek is the number one rated ticketing app. Of course,
- 10:00Speaker 1: we have the code for the FT network Territory ten
- 10:04Speaker 1: for ten percent off your next set of tickets at
- 10:06Speaker 1: Sea Geek. That's ten percent off any tickets with the
- 10:08Speaker 1: promo code Territory one zero. Make sure you click the
- 10:12Speaker 1: link in the description to download the app and have
- 10:14Speaker 1: the code automatically added to your account so you can
- 10:16Speaker 1: use it later. Props to seek geek.
- 10:19Speaker 3: And this is a great fit for him, not only
- 10:22Speaker 3: because he's in he would be in the big leagues,
- 10:24Speaker 3: but the fact that the bullpen shortens games. He doesn't
- 10:27Speaker 3: need to go to a place where he needs to
- 10:29Speaker 3: throw six or seven innings. He can throw four or
- 10:32Speaker 3: five or even is there plans to maybe drop him
- 10:36Speaker 3: into more of like a three or four inning roll
- 10:39Speaker 3: and get him back a week or two earlier or
- 10:42Speaker 3: is it just still brand new news.
- 10:46Speaker 4: I still think it needed to have him go on
- 10:47Speaker 4: to rehab assignment, you know, in a at least for
- 10:51Speaker 4: a few starts. Now, you know, Corban Baga, Corbman came
- 10:54Speaker 4: back after one after missing all the spring training, and
- 10:57Speaker 4: he's looked great for the Blue Jays, going along four
- 11:00Speaker 4: or five innings. But you know, at least he's a
- 11:03Speaker 4: nice example. But we've also seen the other way too,
- 11:06Speaker 4: where guys Partokul, the pitchers who miss all spring training struggle.
- 11:10Speaker 4: So we'll see what happens. But it's a nice depth
- 11:13Speaker 4: at the back end there for sure.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Hey, Bob, let's tie this into the new ownership group
- 11:18Speaker 1: that's going to be coming in. You know, sometimes we
- 11:21Speaker 1: see ownership groups kind of take their time get adjusted.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It's not even official yet as far as we know.
- 11:27Speaker 1: They have to get approved by the rest of the owners.
- 11:30Speaker 1: But you know, how do you think this group can
- 11:32Speaker 1: impact San Diego. It's a Padre's fan base that is
- 11:36Speaker 1: used to this kind of activity. When we had the
- 11:39Speaker 1: late great Peter Sidler running the franchise, Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 4: I'm under siler. I mean, they spent money wildly and
- 11:45Speaker 4: they had the third biggest payroll in baseball and it
- 11:48Speaker 4: paid off. The last two years they watched their budget,
- 11:51Speaker 4: and they had a cut payroll just to add some
- 11:54Speaker 4: guys on, signing guys to mildly contracts, cheap contracts like
- 12:00Speaker 4: Marquez at Basquez and going from there. And uh, at
- 12:04Speaker 4: least now you've got to proven commoditie and uh, they're
- 12:08Speaker 4: gonna give the Dodgers everything they can handle. Uh. You
- 12:11Speaker 4: know a year ago, you thought, Okay, at some point
- 12:14Speaker 4: they're gonna have to trade for Nano Tatis because this
- 12:16Speaker 4: contract is movable all but sun and it's like, forget that,
- 12:20Speaker 4: keep building on and you know, white white, can't this
- 12:23Speaker 4: be the year someone knocks out the Dodgers.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Is it a thing that the Padres could say they're
- 12:30Speaker 3: just too tough to knock off and just ride it
- 12:33Speaker 3: out to the playoffs, Not that anybody can just ride
- 12:35Speaker 3: it out, but is there a focus where the Padres
- 12:38Speaker 3: could potentially make another move And I'm not talking about
- 12:42Speaker 3: like Lucas Giolito is not a small small move, but
- 12:46Speaker 3: a smaller move where they could still move a Tatis
- 12:49Speaker 3: for that big piece that would solidify them pushing all
- 12:53Speaker 3: in for this year and the next few years.
- 12:57Speaker 4: No, I think Tatis is there now, particularly new ownership.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I'd be surprised if they even listened to many calls
- 13:05Speaker 4: in the winter. He's certainly not going anywhere. Now, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 4: the big thing is, Okay, do they make some more
- 13:10Speaker 4: moves and and get better outfielder? Uh, you know for
- 13:14Speaker 4: the stretch run. So I mean, people are in San
- 13:17Speaker 4: Diego excited, uh, you know, and the Dodgers are just
- 13:21Speaker 4: running away with this scene. Two weeks ago, all of
- 13:23Speaker 4: a sudden, the Dogs are hit by injuries, massive injury
- 13:26Speaker 4: to Edwin Diaz, and this thing is wide opened. And
- 13:30Speaker 4: the bullpen, you know, even though you know, besides Mason
- 13:33Speaker 4: Miller has been lights out, but now you get this
- 13:36Speaker 4: kind of pitching depth now helping them go a little
- 13:38Speaker 4: deeper in games and save that bullpen.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Do you feel like the rest of the world forgets that, Bob?
- 13:45Speaker 1: I mean, last year, the Padres gave the Dodgers a
- 13:47Speaker 1: pretty good run late into the season, and the Dodgers
- 13:50Speaker 1: didn't even end up with one of the buys, one
- 13:53Speaker 1: of the top two seeds in the National League. You
- 13:55Speaker 1: just think back, and as history gets murkier, people just
- 13:57Speaker 1: think they ran through the league for two years.
- 14:01Speaker 4: No, You're absolutely right. They could have got easily got
- 14:03Speaker 4: beat by the Phillies that first round on Basil rookie
- 14:07Speaker 4: has a throwing year or also going to have Game
- 14:10Speaker 4: five in Philadelphia, should have got beat by the potteris
- 14:13Speaker 4: two years ago. Pottery has had him down two to
- 14:15Speaker 4: one Game four at Pecko with the Dodgers having a
- 14:19Speaker 4: bullpen game and no Freddie Freeman, so they could have
- 14:22Speaker 4: been beat a couple of times. So I think the
- 14:24Speaker 4: potter's think, Okay, here here's our chance, you know, more
- 14:27Speaker 4: than an older team with the Dodgers, uh, you know
- 14:30Speaker 4: they're starting to get up in age two. Let's see
- 14:32Speaker 4: what happens. But I think, uh, I think it'd be
- 14:35Speaker 4: a huge series in May. I know it's only May,
- 14:37Speaker 4: but when the Dodgers visit the Potres, I think those
- 14:40Speaker 4: fans will go ballistic waiting for it to happen.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Bob, you hinted down a little bit. What are the
- 14:46Speaker 2: realistic expectations for Gilito a little bit? How high of
- 14:49Speaker 2: an expectation can you have for someone who he wasn't
- 14:54Speaker 2: signed in the offseason, and so if no team's really
- 14:57Speaker 2: signed him or believed in him, then he really have
- 14:59Speaker 2: such a high for him when you sign him later
- 15:01Speaker 2: in the year.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Yeah, actually right, Jason. I mean a lot of teams
- 15:05Speaker 4: could have used them. I mean Atlanta thought he couldn't
- 15:07Speaker 4: help them. They never even got to the point of negotiations. Uh,
- 15:12Speaker 4: you know, Chicago could use their starter, you know, they didn't,
- 15:14Speaker 4: you know, pull the trigger on them. So I think,
- 15:17Speaker 4: you know, if he can pitch four or five, maybe
- 15:20Speaker 4: six innings towards the end, you know, by second half
- 15:23Speaker 4: of the year, I think that's good for them. I think,
- 15:26Speaker 4: you know, how long can marquezki pitching like this? They've
- 15:30Speaker 4: had the lights out performances and now, you know it
- 15:33Speaker 4: give us more time to to Joe Mushgrove to get
- 15:36Speaker 4: him right. Obviously, Darbus should be out all year, so
- 15:39Speaker 4: I think it's much needed. And if he can return
- 15:42Speaker 4: to being the guy he wasn't second half, he'd be
- 15:45Speaker 4: great to have for the stretch run and uh, you know,
- 15:48Speaker 4: give them a realistic chance to go deep in the playoffs,
- 15:51Speaker 4: a cover rules run.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Like you said, it was the Padres and the Cubs.
- 15:55Speaker 3: What we originally heard maybe the Braves, you know, I
- 15:58Speaker 3: kind of help throw that in there. But since we
- 16:01Speaker 3: heard about the Padres for a while, here was this
- 16:04Speaker 3: ownership change delaying them, making this move was there like
- 16:08Speaker 3: a I mean it's April, so there's not much of
- 16:10Speaker 3: a freeze. I mean, not many moves rarely made, But
- 16:14Speaker 3: was there kind of a freeze like, Hey, let's make
- 16:16Speaker 3: sure we get this new group in before we make
- 16:19Speaker 3: any kind of sweeping decisions on this.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I mean they were in on guys, but had to
- 16:25Speaker 4: be their price. Remember they were in Merrill Kelly. It
- 16:28Speaker 4: was all big deferred money. They running Zach Gallon was
- 16:31Speaker 4: differring a ton of money. They shouldn't have the present
- 16:34Speaker 4: day money to do it, but you got to think
- 16:37Speaker 4: there's some kind of correlation with the new ownership group
- 16:39Speaker 4: kind of given the nod like, Okay, we can add
- 16:42Speaker 4: onto the payroll in twenty twenty six. Let's not worry about,
- 16:46Speaker 4: you know, the deferred payments. We can do it now.
- 16:49Speaker 4: So I think just this gives them the stamp of
- 16:52Speaker 4: approval that, hey, go ahead and do this thing, and
- 16:56Speaker 4: let's be honest, if they can have a nice run
- 16:59Speaker 4: and get to the role series, that ownership is going
- 17:02Speaker 4: to make a whole lot of money. Wrap the bat.
- 17:03Speaker 4: The first year.

- 18:04Speaker 1: smarter with Square. Get started today, Charging about all right
- 18:10Speaker 1: we're Charger. We're talking about the Cubs. They've won seven
- 18:12Speaker 1: games in a row, Kip, what are you seeing it?
- 18:15Speaker 1: It seems kind of quiet nationwide that the Cubs are
- 18:18Speaker 1: going on this run. I think part of it has
- 18:20Speaker 1: to do with some of the other big money, big
- 18:22Speaker 1: market teams looking so damn bad. I mean, some have
- 18:24Speaker 1: been fine, some have been terrible. We've talked almost every
- 18:27Speaker 1: day right now about you know, the Mets and the Phillies,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and a little bit about a slow start for the
- 18:31Speaker 1: Blue Jays. Astro is not looking good. Cubs look really
- 18:34Speaker 1: good right now, and they're missing quite a bit of pitching.
- 18:37Speaker 2: They are missing quite a bit of pitching with Kate
- 18:39Speaker 2: Horn going down and some of these other guys. I
- 18:41Speaker 2: think Boyd's coming back here shortly. So I do obviously
- 18:44Speaker 2: marquee with them a couple times right before this win streak.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Their problems were they were not hitting with runners on
- 18:51Speaker 2: scoring position. They were one for thirty I think for
- 18:54Speaker 2: a series. So that was the problem. The silver lining
- 18:59Speaker 2: through it all was is that they were still creating opportunities.
- 19:01Speaker 2: They were still getting guys on base, they just were
- 19:04Speaker 2: not cashing it in. Now, to combine with that, good
- 19:07Speaker 2: pitching a little bit, you're starting to see this offense
- 19:09Speaker 2: cash them all in and that's how this win streaks
- 19:11Speaker 2: kind of come out to be. Starting pitching's been there.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I think with these this Cubs lineup. Some of these
- 19:18Speaker 2: big market teams where you might have a Judge or
- 19:20Speaker 2: a Harper and schwarbur in the middle of these lineups,
- 19:22Speaker 2: it's like there's no huge names on the starting rotation
- 19:26Speaker 2: or in this lineup, but this is one of the
- 19:28Speaker 2: deepest lineups in the league where it's a one through nine.
- 19:31Speaker 2: These guys create opportunities. They get on base, they all
- 19:34Speaker 2: can hit doubles in the gap, and they could all
- 19:35Speaker 2: run a little bit that they can attack you from
- 19:37Speaker 2: different ways. So this Cubs team is a good team,
- 19:40Speaker 2: and I think as they get going and start to
- 19:41Speaker 2: get better with runners in scoring position, you're going to
- 19:44Speaker 2: see some long streaks like this happen.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I think one of the things that this team has done,
- 19:49Speaker 3: and you see it in all of their long term extensions,
- 19:53Speaker 3: they've paid for defense, and somebody will be like, Wow,
- 19:56Speaker 3: you could have had Kyle Tucker. You know, he's he
- 20:00Speaker 3: I'm not saying he's bad on defense, but they elected
- 20:02Speaker 3: not to spend that extra money on offense, and they
- 20:06Speaker 3: locked up Nico Horner, they locked up PCA even before
- 20:10Speaker 3: these guys. They came and gave Jason Hayward a ton
- 20:13Speaker 3: of money. They win a World Series with that, and
- 20:15Speaker 3: that was a defensive move. The model for the Cubs
- 20:19Speaker 3: is to play good defense. And if you watch just
- 20:22Speaker 3: this Phillies, this Phillies series, I mean Bregman's making a
- 20:27Speaker 3: few good plays at third. Matt Shaw played third last night.
- 20:31Speaker 3: He made a couple good plays. They you build up
- 20:36Speaker 3: your pitching staff when guys make plays behind you. I
- 20:40Speaker 3: know that sounds I know that sounds very elementary. But
- 20:43Speaker 3: when you have golden left, you have golden center, you
- 20:46Speaker 3: have gold at second. I'm not sure if Dansby has
- 20:50Speaker 3: a gold glove or not, but I know Bregman has
- 20:55Speaker 3: a goal glove at third. So you sit there and
- 20:57Speaker 3: you go, yes, this pitching staff doesn't have the big names.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Even though Matthew Boyd started out hot striking a lot
- 21:03Speaker 3: of guys out. It's so much easier for pitchers to
- 21:07Speaker 3: allow the other team to hit the ball and put
- 21:10Speaker 3: it in play, especially in April in Chicago when the
- 21:13Speaker 3: win's not blown out. But it's easier to pitch and
- 21:17Speaker 3: to be effective. If you can let guys put the
- 21:20Speaker 3: ball in play here, hit it, we'll make the out.
- 21:23Speaker 3: If you don't, that's okay, you'll hit the next one,
- 21:26Speaker 3: we'll get two outs on the next play, or we'll
- 21:28Speaker 3: like that's and it seems to me that's how the
- 21:31Speaker 3: Cubs are pitching right now, and that gives you more confidence,
- 21:35Speaker 3: which ultimately puts hitters in bad counts, which ultimately help
- 21:40Speaker 3: you get more strikeouts. So it's like they're playing a
- 21:42Speaker 3: very good team style, but it's the team that they built.
- 21:46Speaker 3: They built this with intention, and it's working out for
- 21:50Speaker 3: him right now.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I did the research too while you were talking. Danzysponson
- 21:55Speaker 1: does not have one goal glove.
- 21:57Speaker 2: He has two.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Okay, good.
- 22:01Speaker 2: He does. I think early on, I think even with
- 22:03Speaker 2: teams that have the same rosters returning, it takes there's
- 22:06Speaker 2: a different storyline to each year, and there's a different
- 22:09Speaker 2: way to find your mo of that year and your identity.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I think the Cubs early on, right now, I think
- 22:16Speaker 2: they're one of the first teams to find their identity
- 22:18Speaker 2: and to find what they're good at and how they
- 22:20Speaker 2: do it. Because they've already had injuries, so they've had
- 22:22Speaker 2: guys and a next man up kind of mentality already.
- 22:27Speaker 2: But I think Shoda and Cabrera at the top of
- 22:30Speaker 2: the rotation have done great. Boyd coming back now he's
- 22:33Speaker 2: been mister consistent. Colin Ray doesn't get enough love, I
- 22:36Speaker 2: think on the national news just because he's not flashy.
- 22:39Speaker 2: But if you go look at last year and this
- 22:41Speaker 2: year so far, the guy's numbers are about as consistently
- 22:44Speaker 2: as you want, and he's probably only considered he'd be
- 22:47Speaker 2: considered number five starter on most teams, and he's been
- 22:50Speaker 2: pitching like a three year better for a while. Now.
- 22:55Speaker 2: They're just solid. They really are solid, and especially like
- 22:58Speaker 2: Kratz said, when you have a defense behind him that
- 23:00Speaker 2: they do, just throw strikes, don't be scared to put
- 23:03Speaker 2: the ball in play or have it put in play.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Don't don't shoot yourself in the foot by walking guys
- 23:08Speaker 2: and getting them on base and giving these big Indians
- 23:10Speaker 2: when you've got that defense behind you.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And I think that's the case with the Cubs. I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 1: you tell me Kip that there's definitely some swing and
- 23:18Speaker 1: miss that's going to be missing from this team right
- 23:20Speaker 1: now with Palencia out, they lost Porter Hodge for the year.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Like those are their big swing and miss guys. I'm
- 23:26Speaker 1: sure I'm missing some, you know, bullpen wise, Hunter Harvey
- 23:29Speaker 1: can get some swing and miss with his stuff. He's
- 23:32Speaker 1: been out too, so they're missing a lot of their
- 23:34Speaker 1: strikeout punch. But yet you can just rely on the defense.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Last night was a really good example of that. I
- 23:39Speaker 1: think the league miscalculated on show to him Naga. I
- 23:43Speaker 1: think you know, Imanaga kind of looked and said, hey,
- 23:45Speaker 1: you know what, I don't think there's going to be
- 23:48Speaker 1: enough out there. And he took the qualifying offer and
- 23:50Speaker 1: that's great. I mean, that's a very good number, but
- 23:53Speaker 1: usually that means the agent called around and said, hey,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I don't think you're going to get more than this
- 23:58Speaker 1: from the league, so we should take it. And Monaga
- 24:01Speaker 1: is awesome. The first year. Last year it seemed like
- 24:03Speaker 1: he might have been hurt a little bit and went
- 24:05Speaker 1: through threw some ups and downs. But I mean he
- 24:08Speaker 1: looks like, you know, a very good starter again for
- 24:11Speaker 1: this team, and it's been swinging miss up until yester.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I think he had one punch out in the seven
- 24:15Speaker 1: innings that he put together and just was getting more
- 24:17Speaker 1: weak contact. But he's been awesome.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, the start before that, he went like six innings,
- 24:22Speaker 2: no hits, a nine K. So it's like he again.
- 24:25Speaker 2: They don't have these huge superstar in names that you
- 24:28Speaker 2: would probably attached to a Cubs roster or to a
- 24:30Speaker 2: big city market like that, but they have a bunch
- 24:33Speaker 2: of solid players and PCA hasn't even gotten going yet.
- 24:36Speaker 2: That's the fun part too. For the offensive side, he's
- 24:39Speaker 2: he's kind of in a little bit of a struggle
- 24:41Speaker 2: gaining his feet under him this year. But I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 2: if he gets going again anywhere remotely close to what
- 24:47Speaker 2: he did last year, you already know what you got.
- 24:48Speaker 2: With the base running, the defense, he's arguably the best
- 24:51Speaker 2: defensive center fielder in the game right now. With how
- 24:54Speaker 2: much ground he covers, he he he has ways to
- 24:58Speaker 2: contribute to games even if he does doesn't hit. So
- 25:00Speaker 2: I love the way he plays the game, but they
- 25:02Speaker 2: would they will see a huge boost if they can
- 25:04Speaker 2: get his back going as well.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Is the offense good enough you watch the Cubs.
- 25:10Speaker 2: I just really do like the depth of it. It's
- 25:13Speaker 2: one of those ones where it's like you can watch
- 25:15Speaker 2: a Yankees game, you can watch some of these other
- 25:17Speaker 2: teams and you know they're top heavy. You know what
- 25:20Speaker 2: do they say? You know you can go to the
- 25:22Speaker 2: bathroom on certain Indians where it's like, oh, I'm not
- 25:24Speaker 2: missing these at bats. I just really like the Cubs
- 25:26Speaker 2: lineup with how deep it is one through nine, where
- 25:28Speaker 2: it's like you got guys in seven, eight, nine holes
- 25:31Speaker 2: who are are hitting for high average or have high
- 25:34Speaker 2: end basins and turn the lineup over to Nico at
- 25:37Speaker 2: the top, who's been unreal this year so far. But
- 25:39Speaker 2: it's just the every single one through the order can
- 25:42Speaker 2: is contributing. And I think that makes when you don't
- 25:45Speaker 2: give that starting pitcher a break at all, when he
- 25:47Speaker 2: doesn't when he's on the mount, he's like, now this
- 25:50Speaker 2: guy's up. Now this guy's like I'm like where is
- 25:52Speaker 2: my like automatic out, like it's not coming. Then that's
- 25:54Speaker 2: just a that's a hard lineup. So I wouldn't. I
- 25:57Speaker 2: would always like the Cubs, and especially because I think
- 25:59Speaker 2: the been smart with the way they've spent their money
- 26:02Speaker 2: to I think they're missing pieces then now maybe save
- 26:05Speaker 2: your money and go get some pitching maybe, But other
- 26:08Speaker 2: than that, they're they're going to be as competitive as
- 26:09Speaker 2: you want Uh, they're just they're not You're not scared
- 26:13Speaker 2: of anybody, but you're definitely not excited to play them either.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And cue the jokes in the chad. Right now, people
- 26:21Speaker 1: are like, well, they're not playing anyone, They're playing the
- 26:23Speaker 1: Mets and the Phillies.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Yeah, what a weird sent to say right now, But
- 26:28Speaker 2: that's it's weird say they're good enough to beat those
- 26:30Speaker 2: teams and they're not going to be the team when
- 26:32Speaker 2: when good teams like Mets and Phillies are down, it
- 26:35Speaker 2: is very smart and you have to be good enough
- 26:38Speaker 2: to not let them up. Do not be the team
- 26:40Speaker 2: that wakes them up, and do not be the team
- 26:42Speaker 2: that kind of gets those big big boys going again.
- 26:45Speaker 2: And and so they took care of business. You're supposed
- 26:47Speaker 2: to be the guys who aren't playing well, and they did.
- 26:49Speaker 2: You can't blame them for that. Play the game in
- 26:51Speaker 2: front of you.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And we'll see if that continues. So a couple of
- 26:54Speaker 1: minutes here on the other side with the Phillies, crats,
- 26:57Speaker 1: what's the word from Philadelphia? Can you hear the through
- 27:00Speaker 1: the radios and the booing from the ballpark and the
- 27:04Speaker 1: whole deal?
- 27:04Speaker 3: Right now, the best thing that's happening, which hasn't happened
- 27:08Speaker 3: for the last like ten years. Here. The Flyers are winning,
- 27:11Speaker 3: the Flyers are playing well, and the Sixers are actually
- 27:15Speaker 3: in the playoffs. Nobody thinks they're going to do well,
- 27:18Speaker 3: and it really has sheltered them a little bit. But
- 27:21Speaker 3: also the expectation here in Philly, and I heard it
- 27:24Speaker 3: all last year, was I don't really care what they
- 27:27Speaker 3: do in the regular season. I don't really care because
- 27:30Speaker 3: if this team doesn't know how to make an adjustment
- 27:32Speaker 3: in the postseason there, I don't even want to watch
- 27:36Speaker 3: the entire season. So now all those people are kind
- 27:39Speaker 3: of mum like, oh, it was kind of nice when
- 27:42Speaker 3: they were winning last year in the regular season, and
- 27:45Speaker 3: so they're they're They're not the first ones on the
- 27:48Speaker 3: talk rate on talk radio to to be to jump
- 27:52Speaker 3: in and be like, oh man, they're cooked, because they're
- 27:55Speaker 3: the same people who are saying they were cooked last
- 27:57Speaker 3: year and they had an eight game lead in the division.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Oh they'll make the playoffs. Well, now they stayed there.
- 28:03Speaker 3: They're the worst. Now they're all like, oh crap, this
- 28:06Speaker 3: team actually is not doing well. And it's I said
- 28:09Speaker 3: it yesterday, I'll say it again because I watched part
- 28:11Speaker 3: of the game last night. It was I mean, I
- 28:14Speaker 3: get it. Harper hit a hit a dinger late in
- 28:17Speaker 3: the game, and they had a chance with Trey Turner
- 28:19Speaker 3: up with second and third, down by three, but had
- 28:22Speaker 3: a chance for what like a three run homer Like
- 28:25Speaker 3: those don't come around often. It just is something that
- 28:29Speaker 3: most of the lineup is isn't out, and unfortunately it's
- 28:34Speaker 3: like a quick out for the Phillies. I think the
- 28:37Speaker 3: average is like one hundred and sixty three pitches a game,
- 28:42Speaker 3: and I think the Phillies are seeing like one hundred
- 28:43Speaker 3: and forty pitches a game. Like it's it's like take
- 28:47Speaker 3: strike one, swing it the next pitch and put it
- 28:50Speaker 3: in play weekly. So it's something that this offense needs
- 28:54Speaker 3: to figure out. I get the pitchings eer isn't great,
- 28:57Speaker 3: but this is an offensive thing and they need to
- 29:01Speaker 3: They need to turn it around quick. It's it's getting
- 29:04Speaker 3: laid early.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna asked the same thing I've been asking you
- 29:08Speaker 1: for years. Are they still should they have done something
- 29:10Speaker 1: more drastic?
- 29:13Speaker 3: No? No, no, I mean, oh, they should have gotten
- 29:18Speaker 3: more of commedy. They should they should have gotten Boba
- 29:20Speaker 3: Schett they should have pushed harder. Wait what, No, Like
- 29:24Speaker 3: they didn't know all the stuff was gonna happen with
- 29:26Speaker 3: Alec Boum. I mean, if you go around the league,
- 29:28Speaker 3: if you go around this, around the horn, every position,
- 29:32Speaker 3: you would go, Okay, who's better than Alec Bohm For
- 29:35Speaker 3: the price they're paying Alec Bohm, he's a really good
- 29:39Speaker 3: third baseman. Are they gonna Are they gonna replace him
- 29:42Speaker 3: with a free agent? Should they have gotten Bregman? Yeah?
- 29:45Speaker 3: I honestly thought two years ago, I thought they should
- 29:47Speaker 3: have gotten rid of Costianus when he had value and
- 29:50Speaker 3: locked in Kyle Tucker when he was on the market,
- 29:53Speaker 3: and from what I heard it was close. Instead of
- 29:56Speaker 3: the Astros getting Esta parades, they would have gotten Alec Boom.
- 30:00Speaker 3: But it's hard to get rid of Alec Boom too
- 30:02Speaker 3: when he has had back to back seasons of ninety
- 30:05Speaker 3: seven RBIs. Nobody saw the entire team struggling like this
- 30:10Speaker 3: this early, and now today they gotta face Matthew Boyd.
- 30:14Speaker 3: I get he's off the il, but it's another lefty
- 30:17Speaker 3: that's had success when he's been out on the mound
- 30:19Speaker 3: this year.
- 30:22Speaker 1: People, life is expensive, so you should start looking at
- 30:25Speaker 1: things that are unnecessarily expensive, like your phone bill, and say,
- 30:30Speaker 1: is there a better option?
- 30:31Speaker 5: Min Mobile is a better option than if you have
- 30:33Speaker 5: other companies, especially when you have kids like me and

- 30:39Speaker 5: Min Mobile give you a cheaper option with the same coverage.

- 31:32Speaker 1: We learned about that yesterday. It didn't get to it,
- 31:34Speaker 1: So let's do it right now. Let's go backwards, though
- 31:37Speaker 1: for a day. He was unavailable on Saturday because Walt
- 31:42Speaker 1: Weiss said that he had slept on his shoulder wrong.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Then he pitched on Sunday, and then on Monday is
- 31:48Speaker 1: when they announced that he hits the injured list backdated
- 31:51Speaker 1: to April twentieth. He did go to Atlanta for an
- 31:54Speaker 1: MRI no structural damage, so they hope that it's going
- 31:57Speaker 1: to be a short stint for him. They debated at
- 32:00Speaker 1: resting him for four or five days. Is coming from
- 32:02Speaker 1: Mark Bowman, who covers the team, but they didn't want
- 32:04Speaker 1: to go short in the bullpen, so they decided to
- 32:06Speaker 1: just sit him down. Good news is Kratz. They have
- 32:09Speaker 1: a pretty good backup closer because he's a closer. His
- 32:12Speaker 1: name is Robert Suarez. But I don't I don't want
- 32:16Speaker 1: to lose this part. Have you seen these situations pop
- 32:19Speaker 1: up where you sleep on something funny and all of
- 32:22Speaker 1: a sudden, the dude really hurts himself.
- 32:24Speaker 3: No, it wasn't. I mean, he probably slept on it
- 32:27Speaker 3: funny and it was hurting, but it was because his
- 32:30Speaker 3: shoulder is Yeah, Kip, you hurt yourself. You pulled your
- 32:34Speaker 3: hamstring trying to untuck the covers.
- 32:38Speaker 2: No, I was at the so backout from a sneeze.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I'm saying this is welcome, welcome to older age. This
- 32:45Speaker 2: is unfortunately the beginning. You mean, no, yes, it is.
- 32:49Speaker 2: You're getting You're not sleeping on it.
- 32:51Speaker 3: The question was you're not sleeping on it and hurting it.
- 32:54Speaker 3: He didn't sleep on it?
- 32:55Speaker 1: Wrong?
- 32:55Speaker 3: And go, oh no, that John was that John was
- 32:59Speaker 3: hanging all ready. You don't sleep on some correct? Correct?
- 33:03Speaker 2: Okay, correct, Well I missed a game or two because
- 33:07Speaker 2: I woke up with a bad neck where it's like
- 33:09Speaker 2: I couldn't even face the picture from sleeping. I understand
- 33:13Speaker 2: it might have stemmed from something soft, dude, I believe me.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I'm just saying, you get older, that body stops, stops
- 33:20Speaker 2: work and stops responding the same way, and stops doing
- 33:23Speaker 2: a lot of things the same way. So I don't
- 33:26Speaker 2: like hearing that it does happen. And if you're gonna
- 33:29Speaker 2: rest him for four days, how are you gonna rest him?
- 33:31Speaker 2: You know, how's he gonna? Is he sleeping? Be careful, like,
- 33:35Speaker 2: what is he gonna get hurt? More?
- 33:39Speaker 1: Sleeping for a week?
- 33:41Speaker 2: Sitting up? He's thirty sick. I'm just saying that's like,
- 33:44Speaker 2: guys get older, you start hurting yourselves in weird ways.
- 33:47Speaker 2: The only one like I believe that because I've done
- 33:50Speaker 2: it with my neck. It's the ones like it's the
- 33:52Speaker 2: tripping over dogs at home that always I'm always like, eh,
- 33:56Speaker 2: that means something else to me. But sleeping, just because
- 33:59Speaker 2: I've done it, I'm like, hey, that happens, actually bad, pillow.
- 34:03Speaker 3: I need us.
- 34:03Speaker 2: I'm a side sleeper. I need the support of my neck.
- 34:06Speaker 2: So I've had it happen before. And like I'm gonna say,
- 34:11Speaker 2: you get older, it's all I'm all gonna say.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna there'll be a podcast crowd that's listening to
- 34:19Speaker 1: the car later like his crat's whispering, Yes, he's whispering soft, just.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Like just like Kobe said, just like the just like
- 34:27Speaker 3: the gift that I send from Kobe where he's like, yeah, yeah,
- 34:35Speaker 3: but you didn't go into ie L because your neck
- 34:37Speaker 3: was stiff. You missed two games. I get that part
- 34:40Speaker 3: of it, but it's not the original question.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Was I understand the shoulder And it's not a yes,
- 34:46Speaker 2: but I'm just and I'm I'm saying, yes, it is
- 34:49Speaker 2: already hurting, but you can't hurt yourself sleeping, you can
- 34:51Speaker 2: make it worse. I pinched nerves when I slept, like
- 34:54Speaker 2: if I didn't have the right thing, like I would
- 34:56Speaker 2: wake up in my arms and be completely dead to
- 34:58Speaker 2: the world, like a Spento when he shot with the darts,
- 35:02Speaker 2: like just I could not move. And it's there's I'm saying,
- 35:05Speaker 2: stuff can happen. That's all I'm trying to say.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Kip, next time you fall asleep and both your arms
- 35:10Speaker 3: are asleep, or one of your arms is asleep, shake
- 35:14Speaker 3: your other hand, shake your hand that's asleep, and you'll
- 35:17Speaker 3: know what it feels like to actually shake your own hand.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Proud of that one. That's Is that what you do?
- 35:27Speaker 2: You're like, oh, nice to meet me.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Yeah, fall asleep like this and then you wake up
- 35:33Speaker 3: and you're like, oh crap, can't get my alarm.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Well you'll you'll know what it's like to shake your
- 35:38Speaker 1: own hand if your hand was dead. So I guess
- 35:42Speaker 1: there's that.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Uh.
- 35:44Speaker 1: One more thing. On the Braves, they're playing really well
- 35:46Speaker 1: and they're watching these other two teams at the same
- 35:49Speaker 1: time just self destruct and they're loving it.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Now.
- 35:52Speaker 1: It's a long, long season, but it doesn't hurt to
- 35:55Speaker 1: get a hot start going while the other two teams
- 35:58Speaker 1: are looking terrible.
- 36:01Speaker 2: No, no, I listen again, there's you can't win the
- 36:06Speaker 2: division in April in May, but you can certainly lose it.
- 36:11Speaker 2: I think the teams that figure out themselves, like I
- 36:13Speaker 2: said about the Cubs earlier, they figure out their identity
- 36:15Speaker 2: early on and figure out how to win ball games
- 36:18Speaker 2: early on, certainly set themselves up. And if the other
- 36:20Speaker 2: teams in your division want to shoot themselves in the
- 36:22Speaker 2: foot earlier and spin their tires or can't get out
- 36:25Speaker 2: of the mud, that's, hey, all the more power to them.
- 36:28Speaker 2: This is when you really need to put emphasis. Then,
- 36:30Speaker 2: if you're the Braves or any teams like that, where
- 36:32Speaker 2: you see these other teams, you're like, hey, because we
- 36:34Speaker 2: know baseball's a game of averages, it's going to even
- 36:36Speaker 2: itself out. There's going to be a losing streak down
- 36:38Speaker 2: the road for the Braves, and there's gonna be some
- 36:40Speaker 2: winning streaks for Phillies and stuff like that. Take advantage
- 36:43Speaker 2: of this now when they're not playing well and you're
- 36:44Speaker 2: playing well. You try to win every game already, but
- 36:47Speaker 2: really put the emphasis on on the each day.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Isn't it crazy? How exactly started exactly opposite. Last year,
- 36:55Speaker 3: Phillies were off the hot start Braves or Brutes mcgoots,
- 36:58Speaker 3: except the Braves played the Dodgers. The Braves came out
- 37:02Speaker 3: the shoot and I think they were oh and seven
- 37:04Speaker 3: or one in seven. I'm not sure Scott would remember,
- 37:06Speaker 3: but it was a tough start and they were just
- 37:08Speaker 3: behind the April. It is exactly flipped. So Philly's got
- 37:14Speaker 3: a lot of work to do. I think the Mets
- 37:16Speaker 3: are cooked because the Mets just they don't have Yeah,
- 37:19Speaker 3: Nolan McLain and Freddy Peralta and that is it right now.
- 37:24Speaker 1: And it was oh and seven last year. And also
- 37:26Speaker 1: when I said the other two teams, I'm talking about
- 37:28Speaker 1: the Phillies and the Mets. I know there are two
- 37:30Speaker 1: other teams in the division. Sorry, I'm not putting my
- 37:33Speaker 1: money on the Nationals doing a lot of damage throughout
- 37:36Speaker 1: the entire season. It's been a cute start and then
- 37:38Speaker 1: Marlins might hang around, but I don't see them as
- 37:40Speaker 1: a playoff team. I think the expectations were decently high
- 37:44Speaker 1: for the Mets and the Phillies. So just rounding up
- 37:48Speaker 1: the division here and then let's move to the Ale
- 37:50Speaker 1: East We're going to talk to Aaron Boone, Yankees manager soon,
- 37:54Speaker 1: but before we get to him, let's talk Orioles for
- 37:56Speaker 1: a moment. We had the three guys crats that went
- 37:59Speaker 1: down with the Hamlet injuries at the same time, Corbyn Carroll,
- 38:03Speaker 1: Jackson Holiday, and Francisco Lindor. Lindor off to a super
- 38:07Speaker 1: super slow start. I know, he Homer last night. Oh Kip,
- 38:10Speaker 1: you've had one too.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Yep, there's a scar there.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Then we're going to go to you first. Jackson Holiday
- 38:16Speaker 1: is still out. You know, he struggled at one point.
- 38:19Speaker 1: You know, his dad, Matt went on our Cardinal Territory show,
- 38:22Speaker 1: which he is a co host of, and talked about
- 38:24Speaker 1: how he felt like he might be overcompensating with the
- 38:27Speaker 1: other hand. So talk us through what young Jackson is
- 38:30Speaker 1: going through. You know, a much younger player, not too
- 38:33Speaker 1: much younger than Corbyn Carroll, much younger than Francisco Lindor.
- 38:36Speaker 1: You know, you're trying to get yourself going with a
- 38:38Speaker 1: full season of baseball. And he had to leave the
- 38:41Speaker 1: game after this swing yesterday.
- 38:44Speaker 2: So I still remember when I did it. It was actually
- 38:46Speaker 2: my last at bat ever in a Cleveland uniform. I
- 38:50Speaker 2: was still going through some changes. I used to hold it.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I'm going to raise it here, so I used to
- 38:54Speaker 2: hold it right there. I was trying to I don't
- 38:58Speaker 2: know whether just to make changes so I could get better.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I wasn't hitting for high enough average, and I dropped
- 39:01Speaker 2: my pinky down here a little bit or to like even,
- 39:05Speaker 2: and that started to put pressure on the handmaid that
- 39:08Speaker 2: was not used to it. Like my hands were formed
- 39:10Speaker 2: for my regular swing and now I'd switched to that.
- 39:12Speaker 2: And if anybody doesn't know, if it looks at us scan,
- 39:15Speaker 2: the handmaid's almost like a hook and rate where this
- 39:17Speaker 2: line is the knuckle, that's where it cracks, and they
- 39:21Speaker 2: basically just saw it straight off. You don't really need it.
- 39:24Speaker 2: So that's what happens for the surgery, and it takes
- 39:27Speaker 2: a little time to get back power, takes a little
- 39:30Speaker 2: time to get back comfort, and it's just annoying. It's
- 39:35Speaker 2: not a painful process after the surgery's done by any means.
- 39:41Speaker 2: It's just rhythm and kind of re strengthening the muscles
- 39:45Speaker 2: in your hand to kind of go back to where
- 39:47Speaker 2: they were because you're not allowed to use it for
- 39:48Speaker 2: a while when it's in a cast or anything like that.
- 39:51Speaker 2: But he's so young that I don't think it's going
- 39:56Speaker 2: to be It's just gonna be a blip in the
- 39:57Speaker 2: raidar because I still think he's a good player, and
- 39:59Speaker 2: I still think he will to make his way back
- 40:01Speaker 2: up and be a good major leaguer. But I think
- 40:03Speaker 2: it's just frustrating because he was already struggling a little bit.
- 40:07Speaker 2: He was already going through where I was called up
- 40:10Speaker 2: and I had this big title and I want to
- 40:12Speaker 2: be in the big leagues, and now I'm back down struggling,
- 40:14Speaker 2: and then I get hurt too, And like you see
- 40:16Speaker 2: at the bottom of the screen, where injuries just suck,
- 40:18Speaker 2: they really do.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Everybody's injury is different. I get three guys at it,
- 40:23Speaker 3: but Lindor's wasn't actually broken. He had an issue and
- 40:27Speaker 3: they went in and just took it out. So his
- 40:29Speaker 3: healing is going to be different than Corbyn Carroll, who
- 40:32Speaker 3: may hold the bat a little bit different. They're all
- 40:34Speaker 3: a little bit different. But he's clearly in pain in
- 40:38Speaker 3: that video, and he was dealing with it for the
- 40:40Speaker 3: last few weeks, but I think he was trying to
- 40:42Speaker 3: play through it.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And luckily for the Orioles, I mean, they're seeing
- 40:47Speaker 1: some success from some other players. First of all, Jeremiah
- 40:50Speaker 1: Jackson looks ridiculous for them so far this year, in
- 40:52Speaker 1: the first month the site season, that's been a great find.
- 40:56Speaker 1: So you know, they've had some other players stepping up
- 40:58Speaker 1: in Jackson's absence. But of course there's a guy who
- 41:01Speaker 1: was at one point a number one overall prospect and baseball.
- 41:03Speaker 1: He's still super super young. You just want to see
- 41:05Speaker 1: him on the field. And yeah, the hand issue for
- 41:09Speaker 1: him right now, you know, after leaving now twice during
- 41:12Speaker 1: games on his rehab assignment, is certainly a little bit concerning.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Where do we start. We have been talking a lot
- 41:21Speaker 1: of Mets lately, but this has gotten historic and I'm
- 41:23Speaker 1: actually wearing this shirt for them today. Maybe this will
- 41:25Speaker 1: turn it around, or maybe Mets fans just need a
- 41:27Speaker 1: hug the Mets up shirt. So I know our Mets
- 41:30Speaker 1: Up hosts need a hug and maybe more.
- 41:34Speaker 4: So.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Okay, just in last night's game alone, the twelfth loss, Kip,
- 41:40Speaker 1: you have Nolan McClain rolling three to nothing lead for
- 41:44Speaker 1: the team, and then you know, Ron Darling points out
- 41:47Speaker 1: how he felt as if he gave away a pitch
- 41:49Speaker 1: that Byron Buxton ends up hitting over the wall. You
- 41:52Speaker 1: have Devin Williams imploding in the ninth inning and not
- 41:54Speaker 1: being able to throw strikes when needed. You have the
- 41:57Speaker 1: Twins admin rolling the team after the game talking about
- 42:03Speaker 1: things you can get in dozens, and there are many
- 42:06Speaker 1: more storylines, but let's start there, as it's not just losing.
- 42:09Speaker 1: It is like grind it in losing.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they don't like to make things easy over there,
- 42:17Speaker 2: do they. But first let's tip the cap to the
- 42:20Speaker 2: Twins admin. That was a a plus chirp a plus
- 42:24Speaker 2: tweet of was it things you can get in a dozen?
- 42:28Speaker 2: Was it roses, eggs and Mets losses? Or yeah, that's
- 42:33Speaker 2: that's good. I'm all right, that's good. Like we want
- 42:36Speaker 2: to talk about the whole Schlitler thing and like the
- 42:38Speaker 2: social media is just the new era. By the way,
- 42:40Speaker 2: just nailed his last name twice. This is part of
- 42:43Speaker 2: the game and it's fun and I like it. And
- 42:45Speaker 2: that's again I said earlier that they are a good
- 42:49Speaker 2: team or could be a good team. It's because you
- 42:54Speaker 2: see their payroll and you see some of their big
- 42:56Speaker 2: names and on the team, and you're you're you're assuming
- 43:00Speaker 2: that they should be good and it's just it's like
- 43:04Speaker 2: it's the Murphy's Lots, Like anything that can go wrong
- 43:06Speaker 2: will go wrong right now for them. So it's they
- 43:09Speaker 2: can't get out of their own way a little bit.
- 43:11Speaker 2: And it is a long season. But like I said,
- 43:15Speaker 2: you can't win the division in April and May, but
- 43:17Speaker 2: you certainly can lose it. And they are they gotta
- 43:21Speaker 2: they gotta mix it up, You gotta try something different,
- 43:24Speaker 2: like they're just it's like the same stuff over and
- 43:27Speaker 2: over with them.
- 43:27Speaker 3: No, I mean it feels like it. I mean, it
- 43:31Speaker 3: feels like it's since like May fifteenth, twentieth last year.
- 43:35Speaker 3: But you said, you have to assume because they have
- 43:38Speaker 3: a high payroll that they're gonna be good like And
- 43:41Speaker 3: you know what assuming does makes an ass out of
- 43:43Speaker 3: you and me. And right now they're making an ass
- 43:48Speaker 3: out of the fact that this roster is not playing
- 43:53Speaker 3: well together. Who constructed the roster one of the guys
- 43:57Speaker 3: that I respect in the game. I feel what he
- 44:00Speaker 3: has done, what he did with the Brewers, right now,
- 44:05Speaker 3: something is missing for it to be successful with the
- 44:10Speaker 3: Mets and Mets Twitter hated the Twins about three weeks ago.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Last year, Mets Twitter hated me, so I feel you
- 44:19Speaker 3: with all that stuff, but really the ire of the
- 44:23Speaker 3: Mets fans needs to be on the players on the field.
- 44:28Speaker 3: And if you think Wan Soto going zero for two
- 44:31Speaker 3: tonight with two walks is going to be a bad night,
- 44:36Speaker 3: because you're gonna boo him when he when he gets
- 44:38Speaker 3: out the second time, probably a rocket to the right fielder. Like,
- 44:42Speaker 3: that's not the answer. The answer is this team has
- 44:46Speaker 3: a roster issue that is not comfortable, and the story
- 44:52Speaker 3: hasn't changed. The story hasn't changed from last year when
- 44:55Speaker 3: we questioned the different signings that now they're not even
- 44:59Speaker 3: you know, some of those guys aren't even playing. The
- 45:04Speaker 3: roster issue that the fact that they left a spot
- 45:08Speaker 3: open for Carson Bench who had that nice home run early.
- 45:13Speaker 3: It's time to make a change with guys who aren't
- 45:16Speaker 3: doing well. The issue is most of the lineup's not
- 45:18Speaker 3: doing well. So are the Mets able to reverse course?
- 45:23Speaker 3: Not slowly change direction? They have to reverse course, they
- 45:28Speaker 3: have to go in a different direction. They're supposed to
- 45:31Speaker 3: be an athletic team, but you have guys and Kip
- 45:34Speaker 3: you changed positions. I was fortunate I played one position
- 45:37Speaker 3: my whole career. You changed positions. To me, when so
- 45:41Speaker 3: many guys on the offensive side are changing positions, and
- 45:45Speaker 3: it's it leaks into your offense because I don't think
- 45:50Speaker 3: those guys are necessarily hurting them one hundred percent on defense,
- 45:54Speaker 3: but it just leaks into your offense and guys are
- 45:57Speaker 3: just questioning. From Juan Soto being in left field, it
- 46:02Speaker 3: hasn't affected him. He was hurt, but he was a
- 46:05Speaker 3: right fielder for the last few years. Then you have
- 46:08Speaker 3: Boba Shed at third base. Then you have Francisco Lindoor
- 46:12Speaker 3: learning a new third baseman, a new second baseman, Marcus Simeon,
- 46:15Speaker 3: I get it, gold Glover, but he's not hitting. So
- 46:19Speaker 3: you have Mark Vientos who came up as a third baseman,
- 46:22Speaker 3: even if for the last few years you've said, oh,
- 46:24Speaker 3: we're going to transition him to first base. That's why
- 46:27Speaker 3: we're not resigning Pete. We're not giving Pete all that money.
- 46:31Speaker 3: He's still learning a new position. And you have a
- 46:33Speaker 3: third baseman on your roster in Brent Bady, who's been
- 46:36Speaker 3: taking balls in right field because you're a right fielder.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Young prospect hasn't hit very well once he came up
- 46:42Speaker 3: to the big leagues and that's okay, that happens, but
- 46:44Speaker 3: they need to reverse course if they want to save
- 46:47Speaker 3: this season.
- 46:50Speaker 2: They do it does so when you speak about leaking
- 46:53Speaker 2: into your hitting, it's because a lot of times when
- 46:56Speaker 2: you're learning new position. When I'm speaking off of my
- 46:58Speaker 2: personal experience, I went from infield to out for like
- 47:00Speaker 2: twenty five games to finish off the season, you're your
- 47:05Speaker 2: pregame routine is thrown off because your pregame routine now
- 47:08Speaker 2: is spent taking extra reps at the new position to
- 47:10Speaker 2: get you ready for the game. And you might have
- 47:12Speaker 2: normally been in the cage hitting during that time, and
- 47:15Speaker 2: so you're not trading on the offensive side. But at
- 47:22Speaker 2: some point, these guys are professionals, and they're good enough,
- 47:25Speaker 2: they have big names, then they should be good enough
- 47:27Speaker 2: to figure it out to at some point put the
- 47:29Speaker 2: foot down and just be like, hey, it is what
- 47:31Speaker 2: it is. Let's go out with what we have to say,
- 47:33Speaker 2: and let's go win a damn ball game. I mean,
- 47:35Speaker 2: you have to play some winning baseball. You might not
- 47:37Speaker 2: be able to make every play. You can't. Guys have
- 47:40Speaker 2: won games with airs like I've Teams have won games
- 47:44Speaker 2: before with making a couple of airs. That's okay. It
- 47:46Speaker 2: shouldn't be the reason you lose the game. It doesn't help,
- 47:49Speaker 2: but it doesn't mean you can't win the game because
- 47:50Speaker 2: you have some people out of position who might not
- 47:52Speaker 2: have made a play that's normally made. What else are
- 47:54Speaker 2: you doing to win the ballgame? If you got to
- 47:56Speaker 2: play winning baseball? I mean, there is part of me
- 47:59Speaker 2: it's like playing in Cleveland all my years. Part of
- 48:02Speaker 2: me like seeing a big market with the biggest payroll
- 48:07Speaker 2: team not win just because I was like, okay, good,
- 48:10Speaker 2: can't you can't just buy wins? See, it does take
- 48:12Speaker 2: winning baseball. So I do like that part. But at
- 48:15Speaker 2: some point, it's like, you want to see these guys
- 48:17Speaker 2: who are better than this that are just underperforming. But
- 48:20Speaker 2: it's just because, like you said, they're not playing as
- 48:21Speaker 2: a team and they're not playing winning baseball, clearly because
- 48:24Speaker 2: they're not winning games, but it's are you when stuff's
- 48:28Speaker 2: going wrong? Are you taking care of the little things?
- 48:31Speaker 2: And it doesn't seem like they are.
- 48:33Speaker 1: So Kratz, let me ask you about some of the
- 48:35Speaker 1: little things. I think part of what gets so much
- 48:38Speaker 1: respect for the broadcast team for the Mets for years
- 48:41Speaker 1: is that they kind of relate to the fan that's
- 48:45Speaker 1: watching the game. They're not going to sugarcoat as much
- 48:47Speaker 1: when it's bad. They're going to point out what's bad
- 48:50Speaker 1: and make you sound smarter for saying how bad it looks.
- 48:52Speaker 1: They're not just going to be like, oh, it's okay,
- 48:54Speaker 1: you know there's more minor league prospects coming whatever. Like
- 48:57Speaker 1: when they stink, they crush them, and when they're great,
- 48:59Speaker 1: they praise them. So let's go over two examples, go
- 49:01Speaker 1: whichever direction you want to go. Darling pointed to and
- 49:05Speaker 1: at bat from Semion when it was two oh, and
- 49:08Speaker 1: it goes to the bigger discussion of them chasing pitches
- 49:10Speaker 1: and saying, sometimes you got to just take the pitches
- 49:13Speaker 1: outside the zone, try not to be a hero. That
- 49:15Speaker 1: sounds like more of your classic line. The one I
- 49:18Speaker 1: got about mclan I thought was fascinating. Mclan is certainly
- 49:22Speaker 1: not the problem. He's one of the only pluses right
- 49:24Speaker 1: now for the team. But he's gotten hit as he's
- 49:27Speaker 1: gotten deeper into his outings. Okay, that happens with most
- 49:29Speaker 1: starters as you get to the third or fourth time
- 49:31Speaker 1: through in order. What did you think specifically about the
- 49:34Speaker 1: Buyron Buxton at bat. Did you feel like he went
- 49:37Speaker 1: inside and then apologize. Some people online were saying, no,
- 49:40Speaker 1: he was saying that to the catcher. I'm like, why
- 49:42Speaker 1: would he Why would he say that to the catcher
- 49:44Speaker 1: who gives a shit?
- 49:45Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 49:45Speaker 1: Some people, oh no, just saying, oh, my bat on
- 49:48Speaker 1: the pitch missing. I'm like, no, I look like he
- 49:49Speaker 1: told Buckston my bat. I'm not trying to buzz.
- 49:51Speaker 3: You, Okay, I mean I'm going to assume that he
- 49:54Speaker 3: was saying that to Buxton. And my view as a catcher,
- 49:59Speaker 3: I don't Knowolan McClain from Adam, but my view as
- 50:03Speaker 3: a catcher was always if I had a pitcher that
- 50:07Speaker 3: would miss, you know, misfire a pitch, whether it was
- 50:10Speaker 3: at the guy or it was high and we were
- 50:12Speaker 3: trying to go low and he go, ah, show any
- 50:16Speaker 3: kind of emotion, I would be like, look, the hitter
- 50:20Speaker 3: has no idea what your intent was. I'm not saying
- 50:23Speaker 3: you have to be a jerk. I'm not saying you
- 50:25Speaker 3: have to like stare at Byron Buckston and be like yeah,
- 50:28Speaker 3: that's what I'm talking about. But I think Ron Darling
- 50:31Speaker 3: was spot on. But I also know that Noel mcclan
- 50:34Speaker 3: i don't know Nolan mclan that might not be his temperament.
- 50:37Speaker 3: He might be totally fine, Like he's going back to
- 50:39Speaker 3: back or two outings this year. He hasn't given up.
- 50:42Speaker 3: He's been perfect through five. So he's elite and dominant,
- 50:46Speaker 3: and maybe he doesn't need to have that like bulldog mentality.
- 50:50Speaker 3: I'm not trying to make everybody into some type of
- 50:54Speaker 3: eighties and early nineties pitcher. Like Ron Darling said it
- 50:59Speaker 3: the way that I would have agreed that you don't
- 51:01Speaker 3: give You don't give the you don't give the hitter
- 51:03Speaker 3: any advantage. Ever, I don't care if it's the first
- 51:06Speaker 3: pitch of the game or it's your ninetieth pitch of
- 51:08Speaker 3: the game. You don't give him an advantage. And you
- 51:11Speaker 3: definitely don't be like, hey, I wasn't trying to hit
- 51:13Speaker 3: you right there. Maybe after you hit him you say
- 51:15Speaker 3: it like that's your personal personality, but in that moment,
- 51:21Speaker 3: you like as a hitter, you're like, Okay, that was
- 51:23Speaker 3: kind of uncomfortable seeing ninety seven up at my up
- 51:26Speaker 3: in my grill, but he said sorry, so I'm back
- 51:30Speaker 3: and I'm leaning out over the plate. I don't know
- 51:32Speaker 3: any hitters that are like, I'm actually better when I'm
- 51:35Speaker 3: pulling off the ball and thinking everything's in. No, like,
- 51:38Speaker 3: hitters are better when you can stay out over the plate,
- 51:40Speaker 3: especially on Nolan McClain, who's going to throw that slider
- 51:43Speaker 3: and I think he threw a cutter next pitch and
- 51:46Speaker 3: you know it wasn't It didn't moving him back, didn't
- 51:50Speaker 3: do what you would think it would be based on
- 51:53Speaker 3: what happened on the next pitch that kind of stayed
- 51:55Speaker 3: flat on the outer half and Buxton clipped him.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna echo what Crash said on that a
- 52:01Speaker 2: little bit. Do not give the hitter anything. And if
- 52:06Speaker 2: you're like, oh my bad, I miss the hitter has
- 52:09Speaker 2: no idea you missed. That could have been exactly what
- 52:11Speaker 2: you were trying to do. So I think that's I
- 52:14Speaker 2: didn't want any picture of like of mine that I'm
- 52:16Speaker 2: playing defense.
- 52:17Speaker 3: Mind.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I was like, don't say you're sorry while they're still
- 52:19Speaker 2: in the box. Don't tell him you missed, because they
- 52:21Speaker 2: don't know if you came up and tight on them
- 52:25Speaker 2: and something and you walked them or they got a hit.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Once he got the first base, got the ball back,
- 52:28Speaker 2: you'd be like, oh you hit them, You'd be like,
- 52:30Speaker 2: oh my bad one. They're going down the line. If
- 52:32Speaker 2: they're still in that box, they're still doing everything they
- 52:34Speaker 2: can to get a hit off you. They don't know
- 52:37Speaker 2: you missed. Do not tell him that you missed, don't
- 52:39Speaker 2: tell him you're sorry. You are then not locked in.
- 52:41Speaker 2: It shows me that you're more worried about like the
- 52:43Speaker 2: guy's feelings instead of getting him out. You don't have
- 52:46Speaker 2: to be a dick about it, but just your main
- 52:48Speaker 2: focus to be getting him out. So I think Ron
- 52:51Speaker 2: Darling was spot on it. Actually I applauded that one.
- 52:53Speaker 2: I like that a lot.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Ron's really good, really smart at pointing things out
- 52:57Speaker 1: like that, Let's get to the bullpen. So it was
- 53:01Speaker 1: charged to McClean. But Brazabon lets up the tying run
- 53:04Speaker 1: and then later on Devin Williams just completely unravels, and
- 53:08Speaker 1: then of course you have the uproar that he can't
- 53:10Speaker 1: handle New York City. John Harper, who covers the teams
- 53:13Speaker 1: on SNY all the time, said, Devin Williams looks exactly
- 53:17Speaker 1: like he did early last season in the Bronx, like
- 53:19Speaker 1: the stage is too big for him. Upon signing him,
- 53:22Speaker 1: David Stearns tried to say, if you looked at the numbers,
- 53:24Speaker 1: Williams was unlucky last year. If you watched, you knew
- 53:27Speaker 1: it was more than that. Sokrats, I'm curious. I mean
- 53:30Speaker 1: he had I think it was five, yeah, five scoreless outings,
- 53:34Speaker 1: and now he's had three messy outings. Now the first
- 53:36Speaker 1: five outings. I mean I've watched every appearance for him.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Maybe one was clean, Yeah, I'm seeing one that looks clean.
- 53:44Speaker 1: The rest of them, you know, wawk hit whatever right,
- 53:46Speaker 1: so that they're not clean. There's not many relievers who
- 53:49Speaker 1: do that right. It's not like you're watching Mason Miller
- 53:51Speaker 1: just one two, three strikeout, looking just dominate like that.
- 53:55Speaker 1: So that's okay, But then you run into a rut
- 53:57Speaker 1: at the same time as the team going through in
- 53:59Speaker 1: aally terrible time. This is the one part I will
- 54:03Speaker 1: give John Harper, you know, credit for, because I've seen
- 54:06Speaker 1: this too last year. At times you're looking at Devin
- 54:08Speaker 1: Williams when he was struggling early in the season, You're like,
- 54:10Speaker 1: his stuff looks fine. So when his stuff looks okay,
- 54:14Speaker 1: then it becomes more of a location question. Whether he's
- 54:16Speaker 1: losing the zone or the command is a fastball laid
- 54:20Speaker 1: up over the center of the play. Whatever it is,
- 54:22Speaker 1: That to me is when you do start to question
- 54:25Speaker 1: if there is a big city, big market pressure feeling.
- 54:29Speaker 1: He admitted to that recently from last year. When you
- 54:33Speaker 1: say that it's great, we want to hear it from you,
- 54:35Speaker 1: but that to me means that it might pop up
- 54:37Speaker 1: in your head again.
- 54:40Speaker 3: See, I have a tough time when people talk about
- 54:42Speaker 3: the big market like, because I just don't. I don't.
- 54:46Speaker 3: I've seen New York when it's packed and you're playing
- 54:50Speaker 3: the Red Sox down the stretch. I've seen New York
- 54:53Speaker 3: during COVID and there ain't nobody there. I didn't feel
- 54:56Speaker 3: any different pressure in those games, and I did with
- 54:59Speaker 3: tons of in the stands and zero fans in the
- 55:02Speaker 3: stands Like that's you, I know. And that's so that's
- 55:05Speaker 3: where I have a tough time. Yes, I remember what
- 55:08Speaker 3: Devin Williams said that it got fast for him early,
- 55:12Speaker 3: that it was something he had adjust to. Maybe that's
- 55:16Speaker 3: just more of the like coming to him from the ballpark.
- 55:20Speaker 3: It's tough to get to Yankee Stadium for a day
- 55:22Speaker 3: game through traffic, It's tough to find a place to
- 55:25Speaker 3: live like it's a do you want a guy to
- 55:28Speaker 3: settle in? Yes, I promise fans, if you keep booing
- 55:32Speaker 3: Devin Williams, he's not going to become a better player.
- 55:35Speaker 3: It might make you feel better, but he's not going
- 55:38Speaker 3: to become a better player. And if and if people say, well,
- 55:43Speaker 3: every time I watch him, he's you know, he's always
- 55:45Speaker 3: walking a ton of guys. He's always running a tightrope.
- 55:49Speaker 3: I would say, that's what your memory is. And the
- 55:52Speaker 3: fact that he throws that bugs bunny change up that. Yes,
- 55:56Speaker 3: there's gonna be his game relies on that chase. But
- 56:00Speaker 3: you look at his career and he's got just above
- 56:03Speaker 3: a one whip. So he's gonna let one runner on
- 56:06Speaker 3: because he only pitches one inning. So he's gonna get
- 56:09Speaker 3: one runner on, and he's going to to me. I
- 56:12Speaker 3: think one of his biggest issues is as a closer.
- 56:16Speaker 3: You want your guy to be able to go two
- 56:18Speaker 3: days in a row. You want your guy to I
- 56:20Speaker 3: guess nobody goes three days in a row. But now
- 56:22Speaker 3: under this contract, I'm gonna need you too, because the
- 56:24Speaker 3: Mets need all the wins they can. I think his
- 56:27Speaker 3: pitch efficiency, well, it may not show up in a
- 56:30Speaker 3: stat book like last night's outing where he didn't get
- 56:33Speaker 3: any outs, but his pitch efficiency just doesn't seem like
- 56:38Speaker 3: it's Even when I watched him with the Brewers, it
- 56:40Speaker 3: was like, you know, you're having a twenty six twenty
- 56:43Speaker 3: seven pitch outing. Now we can throw you tomorrow, but
- 56:46Speaker 3: no shot you can throw a third day. So I
- 56:49Speaker 3: think there's I think there's some of that that I
- 56:52Speaker 3: think gets in the way of fans of the Mets,
- 56:55Speaker 3: gotten away of fans of the Brewers, gotten away of
- 56:58Speaker 3: Yankee fans last year view of what Devin Williams is.
- 57:02Speaker 3: But his whip is right there with a lot of
- 57:04Speaker 3: other guys. He's not Mayron Navera, and he's not Mason
- 57:07Speaker 3: Miller from the first month of the year, Like, let's
- 57:09Speaker 3: pump your brakes, make sure you're comparing apples to apples.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Here, Okay, we'll see what happens. So you expect him
- 57:18Speaker 1: to rebound.
- 57:20Speaker 3: I expect him to be closer to his normal numbers.
- 57:23Speaker 3: So that means he's about to get hot. I think
- 57:27Speaker 3: Francisco Lindoor what like, he's about to get hot. I
- 57:32Speaker 3: think there's and it's a cop out because I'm never
- 57:35Speaker 3: gonna be the one that's gonna say, I definitely see
- 57:39Speaker 3: this dude having a terrible year. Devin Williams is gonna
- 57:43Speaker 3: become unless he's hurt, unless he's throwing through something, he
- 57:48Speaker 3: is going to figure it out. He's gonna have a
- 57:50Speaker 3: better season than obviously he's having right now. And Mets
- 57:54Speaker 3: fans will say, well, can't get any worse than last night. Ever,
- 57:57Speaker 3: say that in baseball, you guys just burned like a
- 58:01Speaker 3: massive sage blunt out in front of the stadium on
- 58:05Speaker 3: Nolan McLean day and it didn't work out for you.
- 58:08Speaker 3: So yes, it can totally get worse.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, because they burned it on the wrong day.
- 58:13Speaker 1: You can't do that on four twenty one. You missed
- 58:16Speaker 1: the opportunity there late.
- 58:18Speaker 3: No, they did it right. They did it just like
- 58:19Speaker 3: every every manager has a meeting when the ace is going.
- 58:23Speaker 3: Nolan McClain was going. Now when Freddy pe goes, get
- 58:27Speaker 3: that big sage blunt out again and smoke it, send
- 58:30Speaker 3: it out, put it in the trees, burn grimace if
- 58:33Speaker 3: you got to do something, because something's got to happen,
- 58:36Speaker 3: and something's got to happen yesterday, not quick yesterday.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I heard grimace tastes like chicken if you're grilling. No,
- 58:45Speaker 1: I don't know, but anyway, do you got it? It's chaos.
- 58:50Speaker 1: It is chaos right now. Let's slap at the end here.
- 59:06Speaker 1: What's the do you remember the longest losing streak you've
- 59:08Speaker 1: been a part of. I don't know, So I'm just
- 59:13Speaker 1: asking if you have any of those epic you know,
- 59:16Speaker 1: double digit ones.
- 59:18Speaker 2: If I did, it would have been probably my first
- 59:20Speaker 2: year up where we like twenty eleven. I think we
- 59:24Speaker 2: probably lost to oh close to one hundred games, so
- 59:27Speaker 2: I'm assuming it was during that year. But once, once
- 59:29Speaker 2: we turned the corner, I don't think we ever got
- 59:31Speaker 2: too bad more than like six or seven Yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, because you know, it just gets to a
- 59:37Speaker 1: point where it is like consuming that the storyline is,
- 59:41Speaker 1: it's kind of wild and just like it gets crazy
- 59:43Speaker 1: when a team's winning thirteen fourteen in a row. I
- 59:46Speaker 1: mean the same thing.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I've found that point too, where I've got my one
- 59:49Speaker 2: twenty plus where it's like you start to get it,
- 59:51Speaker 2: starts getting these roles where you're like you start to
- 59:55Speaker 2: expect to win, and it's an amazing feeling. It's the
- 59:58Speaker 2: it's a peak of a team where you're like showing up,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Like even if you go down early, you're like, oh,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: we're going to come back. We know we are. We
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: always do it. That's what we do right now. And
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: it's the opposite when you're losing. You're like, even when
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: you get a lead, you're like you're waiting for the
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: comeback from the other team, and it's just not a
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: fun place to.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Be well, and every night kind of feels like almost
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: like playoff vibes in terms of pressure right now for
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: the team. And yes, we wanted to make sure we
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: didn't sleep on how bad the Phillies have been to
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: and a few other stragglers. We did hit the Cubs
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: at the top. If you're just catching us now and
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: want to hear about a team that's thriving, Kip good
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: stuff today and let's see we Oh, we didn't get
