- 0:02Happy Monday morning, everybody. It is the day after the Daytona
- 0:09500, so I don't know what your takeaways are, but I can tell
- 0:15you mine right away. All right, let's hold my feet to
- 0:21the fire. I said that Joey Logano would
- 0:25win the Daytona 500. Hold, hold on, let me pat my
- 0:34back. Not too bad, not too bad.
- 0:39Joey Logano was the show, no doubt about it.
- 0:43So Joey dominates. I was very impressed that he was
- 0:49able to just never give up the lead and and mop the racetrack
- 0:54up from the top to the bottom, carrying three lanes behind him.
- 0:59They were three wide behind him and he would pull this guy up,
- 1:02then he'd dump him, then he'd pull this guy up.
- 1:05So Joey Logano dominates early and what a freak deal he had,
- 1:10huh? Like a shop tower piece of
- 1:14plastic. That's what it was.
- 1:15A piece of plastic goes through his the front end of his car,
- 1:20the grill area and get stuck in his throttle body, which that's
- 1:26basically the carburetor. They come down Pit Rd. and what
- 1:30a great job by their team. They get it fixed.
- 1:32He goes back out. Of course, he went down a lap.
- 1:36He came back, made the lap up and gets up there and you know,
- 1:42let let's break that wreck down real quick.
- 1:44So I saw Joey and Stenhouse, you know, just like you did.
- 1:50But it depends, depends who you like the most is how you're
- 1:54going to defend it. You're going to say Ricky
- 1:57Stenhouse. Well, Ricky is is a a winner.
- 2:00Ricky Stenhouse is a good race car driver.
- 2:03He's guilty of going for it. That's all he's guilty for.
- 2:07Ricky don't usually wreck on his own.
- 2:09He usually gets in a wreck because he's going at it with
- 2:12somebody. So let's be clear about that.
- 2:14All right? I'm a racer can can Ricky
- 2:18sometimes not get into too many, you know, push and pulls?
- 2:22Well, maybe, but so I'm neutral in this.
- 2:28I'm going to tell you why I see it.
- 2:31Joey Logano makes the move to pass Ricky Stenhouse and Ricky
- 2:38makes the move a little too late, turns left.
- 2:41You clearly hear from the in car camera.
- 2:44You see the exhaust pipes. Joey Logano is clearly out of
- 2:48the gas. He does not want to run into
- 2:50him. Now you have Noah Graxson behind
- 2:55Joey Logano trying to layoff of him and then you know, there's
- 3:00really nowhere for it to go in like 1/2 a football field later.
- 3:04Noah is here's key. Listen to this.
- 3:08Noah Graxson is now pushing Joey Logano into what will be the
- 3:14wreck. That's my take away.
- 3:18It's like going 185 mile an hour and everybody saying, let off
- 3:21the gas, stop, it ain't going to happen.
- 3:23You're going to run into each other.
- 3:25So Joey shoehorns himself in there accidentally at the very
- 3:31end, and you're going, you know, you're trying to win the Daytona
- 3:35500 with 15 laps to go. So that's the way I saw that
- 3:40one. I saw, I saw Ricky coming down
- 3:46as Joey's going in. And I, I hear, and you saw it
- 3:51too, Joey Lagana letting off the gas.
- 3:53You heard it. You saw it.
- 3:56And then not a little bit later, you see Noah getting into the
- 4:00back of Joey and all hell breaks loose.
- 4:05All right, So I chose Joey Logano to win.
- 4:08Not a bad choice. Oh, let me let me guess.
- 4:11You knew William Byron was going to win, huh?
- 4:13You so smart. Oh, yeah, I knew William Byron.
- 4:19Hell, I just watched an interview with Jeff Gordon.
- 4:22He said we were definitely surprised by this win.
- 4:25But that's when you're living, right?
- 4:27So congratulations to William Byron.
- 4:29Great job. Back-to-back Daytona 500 winner.
- 4:34All right, I was 5050. I did say they will wreck on the
- 4:39last lap. Coming off at Turn 4.
- 4:43I missed it by half a corner, so I'll give myself credit on my
- 4:49call. Joey Logano was the fastest car
- 4:54and they did wreck on the last corner.
- 4:57Not exactly, but I still thought I did pretty good.
- 5:00I wasn't way off. All right, That was a little bit
- 5:04of fun. Everybody, let's take a drink of
- 5:07coffee. I I still think, I will tell you
- 5:18when I think NASCAR is not off to the best start in 20 years,
- 5:23they are still off to a great start.
- 5:27The complete optics of the Daytona 500 were incredible from
- 5:34you know, the concerts getting underway.
- 5:36Pitbull on the front straightaway.
- 5:39Great pre race by Fox. Absolutely loved seeing the
- 5:45President of the United States land.
- 5:47Great job by Fox TV. Fox TV followed President Trump
- 5:53the whole way all the way through Trump with his grandbaby
- 5:57on pit Rd. It don't get any better than
- 5:59that. Real family values right there.
- 6:03So that looked good. Then they they dropped the green
- 6:08flag and on lap 6 it starts raining.
- 6:11They go round and round under caution.
- 6:14They finally red flag it on lap 11.
- 6:17Then we have a four hour rain delayed.
- 6:21We were lucky it turned out awesome and let me tell you why
- 6:27they started pre race. You know it basically we're
- 6:31starting the Daytona 500 an hour early.
- 6:35Great move. If they would have started the
- 6:38Daytona 500 when they said they were going to start it, you
- 6:43wouldn't had no pre race. It have been washed out that
- 6:46that wind and that rain, it came and when it came it was hard.
- 6:49It was big so you got all the pre race activities in because
- 6:55NASCAR moved it up. So that's a big win.
- 6:58Big win and they get the Daytona 500 started.
- 7:02Now they come back four hours later and they drop the green
- 7:06flag at 5:30 Saint Louis time or 630, you know, New York,
- 7:13Charlotte, NC time. Now the Daytona 500 is in
- 7:17primetime TV, so the rain out worked.
- 7:22NASCAR got lucky and it's still one of their better starts in 20
- 7:26years. OK, let's look at some of the
- 7:29highlights. Dale Junior, he's jacked up on
- 7:32Sun Drop right now. This morning, I'm ready for more
- 7:36Cup races, he said. I loved it.
- 7:39Junior was giddy. He was so happy.
- 7:42Justin Agar finishes 9th. That's a top ten in the Daytona
- 7:47500. Let's move on.
- 7:50How about Jimmy Johnson? Great job.
- 7:53Jimmy was more competitive this race.
- 7:56He finishes third in the Daytona 500.
- 7:59And to me, if you're not if you're not a seven time
- 8:05champion, that's a hell of a run.
- 8:09But because he's a seven time champion, he's used to winning
- 8:12everything. But from what Jimmy's been
- 8:15through, that that's a new Jimmy.
- 8:18He's got to be jacked up on Sun Drop.
- 8:20Jimmy's probably Jimmy Johnson probably looking forward to the
- 8:24next race. There's so much more to talk
- 8:28about. But I think I told you my
- 8:30highlights, right? Great start to the year.
- 8:34We're off and running. I will be at Atlanta this week.
- 8:37Everybody trackside live, straight up noon, straight up
- 8:42noon Atlanta. We've got some great driver
- 8:44interviews. NASCAR's rolling.
- 8:48Sounds like an Aerosmith song. Train get to rolling all night
- 8:52long. The NASCAR train is rolling.
- 8:55We off to a good start. Jump on and I'll end like this.
- 8:59You want to know the big controversy?
- 9:01I'll give you the little bitty controversy.
- 9:04You're saying why didn't they not drop the yellow flag at the
- 9:08end of the race? Let me leave you with this.
- 9:13If they would have throw the caution flag, your top five
- 9:17would have still been your top five.
- 9:19I studied the tape. If they would have throw the
- 9:22caution flag, Alex Bowman was still going to be your winner,
- 9:26Todd Relic was still going to be second, Jimmy Johnson was still
- 9:30going to be third, so on and so forth.
- 9:32So let that sleeping dog lie. I will go with you.
- 9:39I say that is that is inconsistent.
- 9:43That is inconsistent. I agree with you.
- 9:46But what I'm saying is you're going to sit here and say they
- 9:49should have throw the yellow flag.
- 9:52Hold on. It would not have made a hill of
- 9:54beans. OK, so if you want to fight
- 9:58about that, go ahead and fight with yourself in the mirror.
- 10:00Just fight, Look in the mirror and fight yourself.
- 10:03The finish would not have changed at all.
- 10:07However, I do agree with you that they are inconsistent, but
- 10:11I did like the call. There's no reason to throw the
- 10:14caution at that point. The wreck happened and they they
- 10:19were not going to come back around.
- 10:20The race was over. They were not going to come back
- 10:22and run into it. And remember what I told you
- 10:25about the twin. I did.
- 10:28I didn't like that caution flag in the twin either.
- 10:32Paul, I'm saying to you is give it a break.
- 10:35Give it a break because this outcome, thank God, this outcome
- 10:41would not have mattered. All right, I addressed it.
- 10:45That's all. And I agree with you, NASCAR is
- 10:49inconsistent. However, I liked the call.
- 10:54No caution. The Daytona 500 did not end
- 10:58under caution. The winner was the winner.
- 11:01We got a legit winner. Nobody had anything to do with
- 11:04it except them wreck it. And by the way, that very last
- 11:08wreck, go look at it. Cole Custer made a right to pass
- 11:14Denny Hamlin. It was Chase Briscoe that nailed
- 11:18the Denny Hamlin so hard and sent Denny into Austin.
- 11:22So listen, this is Daytona. You ain't going to blame nobody
- 11:26on the hell. Oh, he shouldn't have.
- 11:27Hey, easy for us to say. Sitting her ass on the couch.
- 11:31Oh, I'm sitting on the couch. Joey Logano should have not done
- 11:35that. Get your ass off the couch,
- 11:39spend 20 million and get yourself your own NASCAR Cup
- 11:43card. See you all in Atlanta 12 noon
- 11:48Sunday for Trackside Live. Have a great Monday, everybody.
