- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 25th of November. Great to have your company.
- 0:18Thank you for inviting me into your day so that we can sit down
- 0:22before the throne of the eternal God.
- 0:26And He's going to speak to us and He's going to share some of
- 0:28his heart with us. What an incredible privilege.
- 0:32And today Paul really climbs up high on his soapbox and works
- 0:37hard to try and convince people to turn from the thing that they
- 0:41have been following their whole life.
- 0:43I don't know if you've ever experienced this.
- 0:45I, I'm witnessing it with great joy at the moment as Fraser, our
- 0:49middle son, has just finished grade 12 final exams.
- 0:53And he has spent months and months locked in studying so
- 0:56hard. And then walks out of his last
- 0:58exam and suddenly no more study to do, no more preparation to
- 1:02do, no more, you know, thinking of maths and physics every
- 1:06waking moment of every day and even in his dreams.
- 1:09And now he has to try and find a new way of being.
- 1:12And I think how hard must it have been for those early Jewish
- 1:15believers who their whole life, their whole culture was centred
- 1:19around following this law. And that is how they made
- 1:22themselves holy. And just like that, Jesus comes
- 1:26along and turns that on its head.
- 1:28And that's no longer the most important thing.
- 1:30That's no longer how they're justified.
- 1:32So as they try and wrap their heads around this and are
- 1:35struggling to do so, Paul is encouraging them with great
- 1:38urgency to just rest in the grace of that post exam Jesus.
- 1:45OK, maybe not, but yes, in that grace that Jesus has for them.
- 1:49So let us hear that encouragement to us to rest in
- 1:52the grace of Jesus as we read together Galatians chapter 3.
- 2:08Oh, foolish Galatians, who was cast an evil spell on you?
- 2:13For the meaning of Jesus Christ's death was made clear to
- 2:17you as if you had seen a picture of His death on the cross.
- 2:21Let me ask you one question. Did you receive the Holy Spirit
- 2:25by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not.
- 2:29You received the Spirit because you believed the message you
- 2:32heard about Christ. How foolish can you be after
- 2:37starting your new lives in the Spirit?
- 2:39Why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human
- 2:43effort? Have you experienced so much for
- 2:46nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was
- 2:50it? I ask you again, does God give
- 2:54you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you
- 2:58obey the law? Of course not.
- 3:01It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.
- 3:05In the same way Abraham believed God, and God counted him as
- 3:10righteous because of his faith. The real children of Abraham
- 3:15then, are those who put their faith in God.
- 3:18What's more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when
- 3:22God would make the Gentiles right in his sight because of
- 3:26their faith. God proclaimed this good news to
- 3:29Abraham long ago when he said all nations will be blessed
- 3:33through you. So all who put their faith in
- 3:37Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his
- 3:41faith. But those who depend on the law
- 3:44to make them right with God are under his curse.
- 3:48For the scriptures say. Cursed is everyone who does not
- 3:53observe and obey all the commands that are written in
- 3:56God's book of the law. So it is clear that no one can
- 4:00be made right with God but trying to keep the Law.
- 4:03For the Scriptures say it is through faith that a righteous
- 4:08person has life. This way of faith is very
- 4:12different from the way of the law, which says it is through
- 4:15obeying the law that a person has life.
- 4:18But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law.
- 4:23When He was hung on the cross. He took upon himself the curse
- 4:28for our wrongdoing, for it is written in the Scriptures.
- 4:32Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree through Christ Jesus.
- 4:38God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing He
- 4:41promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive
- 4:45the promised Holy Spirit through faith.
- 4:49Dear brothers and sisters, here's an example from everyday
- 4:53life. Just as no one can set aside or
- 4:56amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case.
- 5:01God gave the promises to Abraham and his child.
- 5:05And notice that the scripture doesn't say to his children as
- 5:08if it meant many descendants. Rather it says to his child.
- 5:14And that of course means Christ. This is what I am trying to say.
- 5:19The agreement God made with Abraham could not be cancelled
- 5:23430 years later when God gave the law to Moses.
- 5:28God would be breaking His promise, for if the inheritance
- 5:31could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the
- 5:35result of accepting God's promise.
- 5:37But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.
- 5:42Why then was the law given? It was given alongside the
- 5:46promise to show people their sins.
- 5:50But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the
- 5:53child who was promised. God gave His law through angels
- 5:57to Moses, who is the mediator between God and the people.
- 6:02Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach
- 6:06an agreement. But God, who is 1, did not use a
- 6:11mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.
- 6:15Is there a conflict then between God's law and God's promises?
- 6:19Absolutely not. If the law could give us new
- 6:23life, we could be made right with God by obeying it.
- 6:26But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so
- 6:32we receive God's promise of freedom only by believing in
- 6:35Jesus Christ. Before the way of faith in
- 6:39Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the
- 6:43law. We were kept in protective
- 6:46custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed.
- 6:51Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until
- 6:55Christ came. It protected us until we could
- 6:58be made right with God through faith.
- 7:01And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the
- 7:05law as our guardian. For you are all children of God
- 7:09through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united
- 7:13with Christ in baptism have put on Christ like putting on new
- 7:18clothes. There is no longer Jew or
- 7:21Gentile, slave or free, male and female.
- 7:25For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- 7:30And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true
- 7:34children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's
- 7:38promise to Abraham belongs to you.
- 7:53Oh, what an incredible chapter. Thank you Jesus, for these
- 7:57words. Thank you for Paul's
- 8:00encouragement to make our faith in you the one and only thing
- 8:05that we pursue in our lives. Because that faith that you give
- 8:10us, that you plant like a seed in our heart and water it
- 8:14through our lives, that is the only thing that draws us into
- 8:19this wonderful relationship with you, our Creator, our Saviour,
- 8:25the lover of our souls. So here we are, Jesus.
- 8:31We are putting you at the centre.
- 8:33And all the other trimmings that we hold so tightly to as though
- 8:37they're going to make any kind of difference.
- 8:40We just release them and we lift up our empty hands to you, the
- 8:49Creator, our King, our Saviour, our wonderful Jesus.
- 8:58Thank you for this beautiful gift that you give us, for all
- 9:01that you've done for us, and the freedom that we now have to just
- 9:07cast our gaze upon You and bask in the glory of your love.
- 9:14So we do that now, praying all of this in your wonderful name,
- 9:18Jesus.
