- 0:00Speaker 1: Wow, Donald Wow. And on a day when we have
- 0:05Speaker 1: Neil Flynn on, like, I'm all excited. I've been pounding
- 0:09Speaker 1: energy drinks and here I am. I'm ready to go.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And you know, Donald phase on, do you want to
- 0:14Speaker 1: tell everyone why you're so late? I made a mistake
- 0:17Speaker 1: and tried to download the new Apple whatever it is. Yeah,
- 0:23Speaker 1: the software two hours before. This computer it's pretty old.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It's a MacBook Pro. But it's an old computer. You know,
- 0:34Speaker 1: it's an older model of the MacBook Pro. Right, So
- 0:38Speaker 1: I am now twenty minutes later. Yeah, we got Neil Flynn.
- 0:41Speaker 1: He's like sitting in a holding room. Yeah, we put
- 0:44Speaker 1: him in the holding We put him all in the
- 0:46Speaker 1: holding cell. Yeah, we put Neil in a holding cell.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And he's just sitting there. He's probably gonna keep, probably
- 0:50Speaker 1: gonna walk out soon. I hope Neil doesn't walk out.
- 0:53Speaker 1: First of all, how's everybody doing. We were just chatting.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We had a great chat waiting for you. What were
- 0:59Speaker 1: you chatting about. We were talking about just our lives
- 1:04Speaker 1: and what's happening and how Joel has a huge Twitter following.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I didn't know about. Yeah, did this just happened because
- 1:10Speaker 1: of the podcasts? Are or novels. Joel, Joel, what's your handle?
- 1:13Speaker 1: We should we should blow it up even more. Yeah,
- 1:16Speaker 1: my handles at Joel Monique on the twitters and the instagrams.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And I was a writer before I came to you guys,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and I would do a lot of critiquing of like
- 1:24Speaker 1: television shows and movies. I think my Watchman interviews are
- 1:29Speaker 1: probably when I'm most famous for Toronto International Film Festival.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Just retweeted those yesterday. But yeah, come talk to me
- 1:35Speaker 1: about nerdy and political things. It's good times. Well, well
- 1:39Speaker 1: you're you're you're a Watchman fan? Oh fuck it? From
- 1:42Speaker 1: the graphic novel era. The TV show really killed it?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Did you not like the movie? The movie was my introduction,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and I find that it has some things that are
- 1:50Speaker 1: very intriguing and interesting about it, but overall, I don't
- 1:53Speaker 1: think it holds up to like the quality that is
- 1:56Speaker 1: the original graphic novel. Right, the graphic novel has more.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And I love the TV show Man. I thought that
- 2:01Speaker 1: was incredible and brilliant. They want a Peabody this morning
- 2:04Speaker 1: and so relevant to today when you see these when
- 2:07Speaker 1: you see what's a was happening in the news, And
- 2:10Speaker 1: also like cops with their face masks on. Um. I
- 2:15Speaker 1: can't but help but think of watching The Watchman. I
- 2:18Speaker 1: was like, wow, yeah, And I saw someone at an
- 2:20Speaker 1: article that was like, um, Watchman was just a few
- 2:23Speaker 1: months too early or something like that. Someone. Yeah, they
- 2:25Speaker 1: got it right, they got it right, they predicted it. Listen,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I would love to banter with you and tell you
- 2:30Speaker 1: how much I smell because I forgot to put on
- 2:32Speaker 1: deodorant and uh and I'm I'm glad that we're on
- 2:35Speaker 1: a zoom call, so you guys aren't offended. But we
- 2:37Speaker 1: got Neil Flint sitting all right. Well, then hold on,
- 2:39Speaker 1: watch a second. How about this fo six seven eight
- 2:42Speaker 1: stories about show? We made about a bunch of nurses
- 2:51Speaker 1: stories Yet here, yet here. You know, I don't think
- 3:06Speaker 1: that you deserve to five six seven eight when you're
- 3:09Speaker 1: this late. I did it already, so I know. But
- 3:12Speaker 1: I just want to submit to the to the to
- 3:14Speaker 1: the to the to the Scrubs podcast rule book that
- 3:18Speaker 1: you are when you're this late. You don't get to
- 3:19Speaker 1: five six seven eight, you're punished. When when did we
- 3:22Speaker 1: get a rule book? You know, when I was a kid,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I'm going to camp. I was so nerdy and this
- 3:29Speaker 1: was back in a day when they would let you
- 3:30Speaker 1: do this. But on the on the school bus to camp,
- 3:33Speaker 1: I would sit in the front seat and as the
- 3:36Speaker 1: bus mike. As the bus pulled in for each stop,
- 3:39Speaker 1: the bus driver would allow me to operate the mechanism
- 3:43Speaker 1: that opened up the school bus door, and I thought
- 3:47Speaker 1: I was the coolest mofo in the world as the
- 3:50Speaker 1: door operator. Now, this is my point, was that I
- 3:53Speaker 1: got in trouble one day at camp and the counselors
- 3:56Speaker 1: told the bus driver that I had been bad and
- 3:58Speaker 1: I was not allowed to operate rate the door that day,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and I was crushed. I was I sat and pounded,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and I just feel that that should be something like
- 4:08Speaker 1: your punishment. You don't get into five six seven eight
- 4:10Speaker 1: when you've been naughty. But I already five six seven eight.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I know. Wow, I'm just trying to lay down the rules.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Maybe Joel can can start to make like a Bible
- 4:18Speaker 1: of sorts of the rules of the show. Okay, how
- 4:21Speaker 1: old were you and all of this happened? This was
- 4:23Speaker 1: last year, and I'm just no, I don't know day camp.
- 4:28Speaker 1: How old you at day camp? Seven eighty? Shit? Well,
- 4:32Speaker 1: then yes, I can understand. I was five six seven eight. No,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. All right, Let's bring in Neil Flynn. Dan.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Push the button, Ladies and gentlemen give it up. Four. Yeah, Hi,
- 4:46Speaker 1: Neil Flynn. How's it going going? Well? Excellent? Are he
- 4:55Speaker 1: is there? High? Neil? This is a Joel and I
- 4:58Speaker 1: think you met Dan briefly. Yes. I was teaching him
- 5:02Speaker 1: about computers and things like that. It's so good to
- 5:07Speaker 1: see you, man. It is good to see you too.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Donald's literally in the closet, good man, I am literally
- 5:13Speaker 1: in the closet. It started. It started Neil because it
- 5:16Speaker 1: was it was the best place for sound, because it
- 5:18Speaker 1: had all his clothes as a sound dampening thing. And
- 5:20Speaker 1: then he realized that he could hide from his family
- 5:22Speaker 1: in there. So he goes there sometimes even when we're
- 5:25Speaker 1: not recording the podcast, to escape his his children. This
- 5:29Speaker 1: is the this is the safest place in my house.
- 5:31Speaker 1: My kids don't find my clothes amusing or interesting enough
- 5:36Speaker 1: to want to hang out in the closet, so I
- 5:38Speaker 1: can't say I ever found my father's clothes amusing. Uh. Well,
- 5:44Speaker 1: any of your kids big enough to wear your clothes? Now? No?
- 5:48Speaker 1: I no? Thank good? Well, yeah, well, yeah, I have
- 5:50Speaker 1: an eighteen year old with us, but he doesn't necessarily
- 5:55Speaker 1: like the clothes I wear. He's more into that supreme
- 5:59Speaker 1: style and stuff like that. Me personally, I you know,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I've dumbed down my gear a little bit and now
- 6:06Speaker 1: I'm a golf shirt and shorts kind of guy. And
- 6:09Speaker 1: so what you see behind me, there's a bunch of
- 6:12Speaker 1: golf shirts and then my shorts are over there. That Neil,
- 6:16Speaker 1: that was your probably first and last tour ever of
- 6:18Speaker 1: Donald's clothes. Yeah, yeah, well you know you asked, but
- 6:26Speaker 1: I do. I do remember. I do remember when my
- 6:28Speaker 1: father's clothes became interesting to me and I wanted to
- 6:31Speaker 1: wear all of his gear. And I would go into
- 6:34Speaker 1: my dad's closet and take his shirts which were oversized
- 6:38Speaker 1: for me, which at the time was really cool. And
- 6:41Speaker 1: he had like a bunch of designer things that I didn't,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, he had like back in the day when
- 6:46Speaker 1: Jabbow was really popular, or you know, shirts like that.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And I remember going in his close Sergio Tacchini. Do
- 6:52Speaker 1: you remember those? No? I remember, No, I don't. I
- 6:55Speaker 1: was like the sweatsuit sweatsuit, okay, but I remember going
- 6:58Speaker 1: in his closet and taking a really expen shirt and
- 7:01Speaker 1: wearing it outside and ripping it and being like, oh shit,
- 7:05Speaker 1: my dad's gonna kill me. My dad's gonna kill me,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and uh having to tell him. And my dad didn't
- 7:10Speaker 1: come home all the time, right, So my dad would
- 7:12Speaker 1: leave in the morning and then come back maybe you
- 7:15Speaker 1: know three four days later. You know, that's just how
- 7:19Speaker 1: my dad rolls, um and and and uh. I remember
- 7:26Speaker 1: having to wait for him to come home to tell
- 7:29Speaker 1: him that I ripped one of his really expensive shirts.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And he wasn't too beat up about it, but I
- 7:34Speaker 1: remember the fear for three days I had to wait,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and you know, my mom being like, he's gonna kick
- 7:39Speaker 1: your ass and me being like, oh god. And then
- 7:44Speaker 1: like playing playing something stupid, like we were playing in
- 7:47Speaker 1: a on a jungle gym and we would play tag
- 7:50Speaker 1: where you couldn't touch the ground, and the jungle gym
- 7:53Speaker 1: was huge, was big enough for you to jump from
- 7:56Speaker 1: you know, the slide to you know, uh one of
- 8:01Speaker 1: the houses or wooden houses or something. Shit. You were
- 8:04Speaker 1: a kid, Yeah, I was a kid wearing my dad's
- 8:07Speaker 1: oversized expensive shirt. What made you think, like, you know what,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna rock to the Jungle gym today is Dad's
- 8:13Speaker 1: expensive shirt. I just, you know, because everybody was wearing jabbow,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And I thought, well, if
- 8:19Speaker 1: he has a shirt, I can go outside and I'll
- 8:22Speaker 1: have this really crisp and it was like and it
- 8:24Speaker 1: was fucked up to the fucked up thing was it
- 8:26Speaker 1: was like in plastic and had just come from the
- 8:28Speaker 1: cleaners and stuff. Kind of knew. I kind of knew,
- 8:31Speaker 1: like dude, right, and I made a mistake. It's one
- 8:39Speaker 1: of those things like I watched my kids now do
- 8:41Speaker 1: to shit where it's like, what were you thinking, why
- 8:43Speaker 1: would why would you even do something like that? And
- 8:47Speaker 1: their answers I don't know, And that was my answer too.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I don't know, yep, it's just impulsive, impulsive. My sister
- 8:56Speaker 1: went I went close shopping. I remember, I was in
- 8:58Speaker 1: like fourth grade and it was the height of I
- 9:00Speaker 1: don't know if you remember guest jeans. Um it was
- 9:03Speaker 1: like the height of guest jeans and for mostly for women.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I think at the time, I'm guessing because my sister
- 9:09Speaker 1: convinced me and my mom that I should wear guest
- 9:12Speaker 1: jeans as well in fourth grade and they were very uh,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you could always tell they were guest jeans because they
- 9:17Speaker 1: had a triangle on the on the back, on the
- 9:19Speaker 1: back jean pocket. So I thought, Okay, you know, I'm
- 9:23Speaker 1: not much of a style guy. I'm more of a
- 9:24Speaker 1: sweatpants T shirt kid, but you know, okay, I'll try
- 9:27Speaker 1: this out for a full day. I was bullied by
- 9:31Speaker 1: essentially the entire school. Children of all ages and grades
- 9:38Speaker 1: came by to point and laugh at me and my
- 9:41Speaker 1: guest jeens because they were considered like girl jeans or
- 9:45Speaker 1: a girl a girl and expensive I think they were.
- 9:47Speaker 1: They were like remember them being like fifty bucks or
- 9:50Speaker 1: maybe a hundred bucks whatever whatever they I mean, it
- 9:52Speaker 1: was like too expensive for a kid to have any way,
- 9:55Speaker 1: But I think it's fourth I don't know, I don't know.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I regret it to this day. I when Donald started
- 10:02Speaker 1: talking about his his story, I felt the pain in
- 10:05Speaker 1: my heart from literally the It's like it's like it's
- 10:08Speaker 1: like what's his name on on the Simpsons going Hey,
- 10:11Speaker 1: it was literally that for a full day of school.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So then I go home. I go home in tears
- 10:17Speaker 1: and I tell my mom, like, I hate these jeans.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I'm so everyone made fun of me all day long,
- 10:22Speaker 1: and I fucking hate these jeans. And she was like, well,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you know we're gonna do Zach. Those stream teens are
- 10:27Speaker 1: perfectly fine. We're gonna take my little stitch cutter and
- 10:30Speaker 1: we're gonna cut the triangle off off the pocket. Well
- 10:34Speaker 1: she did that, and they still had the marking of
- 10:37Speaker 1: where the triangle was. Yeah, now you have some sort
- 10:43Speaker 1: of knockoffs, Jean. Yeah exactly, but yeah it's worse exactly, Neil.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Now I'm wearing black Market guest Team. Well, he'll thank
- 10:55Speaker 1: you for coming on. We Donald and I started started
- 10:57Speaker 1: doing this silly little thing, and both of us, Um,
- 11:01Speaker 1: when we post about it on Instagram and Twitter, I
- 11:04Speaker 1: would say that like sixty percent of the comments people
- 11:07Speaker 1: are right, right or when are you having Neil Flynn
- 11:09Speaker 1: on Um, So you are very beloved by beloved or
- 11:13Speaker 1: beloved by either one by the people, either one. It's
- 11:16Speaker 1: like divisive and divisive. All of a sudden, divisive became
- 11:19Speaker 1: divisive because that's how Barack Obama pronounced it. Really Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 1: people say divisive. I'd never heard it pronounced that way
- 11:28Speaker 1: before Obama. Well you know, if Obama said it happened. Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Now I'm switching up. I'm switching a few years. It's
- 11:35Speaker 1: a few years late, but I'm changing, switching it up,
- 11:37Speaker 1: switching it up. If he starts wearing Jabo shirts, that's
- 11:41Speaker 1: what he probably does wear guest jeans, though he's a
- 11:45Speaker 1: stylish guy. I don't know if they're still in style anymore.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I don't know if. Yeah, I'm not sure how big guessing.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I don't think I know somewhere, somebody the CEO of
- 11:53Speaker 1: guesses like, we're still at here, We're still We're gonna
- 11:58Speaker 1: get Donald and I are going to get send guests
- 11:59Speaker 1: Geene in the mail, because sometimes when we mentioned things
- 12:02Speaker 1: on here, we get set in the mail. I got
- 12:04Speaker 1: a care package from Omission. I have to tell him, Neil,
- 12:07Speaker 1: that's really lame in Hollywood to say, but I don't
- 12:09Speaker 1: eat gluten, and but I love beer. And so there's
- 12:12Speaker 1: a really good pale ale called Omission, which I mentioned
- 12:15Speaker 1: because we were all talking about beer. They set me
- 12:17Speaker 1: not only a beautiful care package of Omission beer, but
- 12:20Speaker 1: an Omission backpack. I've yet to receive any of this.
- 12:23Speaker 1: When you come to school in the backpack, I'm going
- 12:26Speaker 1: to make fun of you. I've got a Mission backpack.
- 12:34Speaker 1: You're gonna be like, Zach, please tell me you're not
- 12:36Speaker 1: wearing a gluten free beer backpack. I don't really even
- 12:41Speaker 1: know what that is. Gluten, but I think you can
- 12:44Speaker 1: get away with not even gluten in Hollywood. Yeah you can.
- 12:47Speaker 1: It's just when I this podcast has listened all over
- 12:49Speaker 1: the world, whenever I mentioned it, I cringe because I
- 12:52Speaker 1: know people are like, oh, what a Hollywood tool. You know.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I thought that sparkling water was universal. You go places
- 13:00Speaker 1: in like Texas and you'll be like, can I get
- 13:04Speaker 1: some sparkling water? And they're like, we don't have that.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You can say club soda. Maybe I went to someplace
- 13:11Speaker 1: and they were like, we do have club soda. Yes,
- 13:13Speaker 1: what's the clubference between club soda and sparkling water? Does
- 13:15Speaker 1: anybody know club soda is carbon and sparkling water is sodium?
- 13:20Speaker 1: If I if I'm no, no, Neil knows. No, You're right,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I have a cat. Okay, And of course they listen
- 13:28Speaker 1: when you're saying no, yeah, but he's oh, you were
- 13:31Speaker 1: saying no to the cat. I thought you were. I
- 13:34Speaker 1: thought you were heavily. I thought you were very clearly
- 13:37Speaker 1: opining on Donald's no, no, no no. And then I
- 13:41Speaker 1: was waiting for you to go into your explanation, but
- 13:43Speaker 1: you never Just no, don't go and try to give
- 13:49Speaker 1: me that club soda story. All right, Wait, Joel is
- 13:52Speaker 1: letting us know. Club soda is artificially infused with carbon
- 13:56Speaker 1: and mineral salts. Similarly, seltzer is artificially carbonated but generally
- 14:02Speaker 1: does not contain any added minerals. Sparkling mineral water, on
- 14:06Speaker 1: the other hand, is naturally carbonated from a spring or well,
- 14:09Speaker 1: how was something naturally carbonated? I don't know, dude, carbon
- 14:13Speaker 1: gets into it? I don't know. Yeah, I guess. Well
- 14:16Speaker 1: that was a very thorough explanation, but I still don't
- 14:19Speaker 1: understand it. I feel like you custom cut and pasted
- 14:22Speaker 1: that though from she and just freehand type that she
- 14:25Speaker 1: just got it off the web, you know, speaking of
- 14:28Speaker 1: places that don't have things. We're in some backwoods plays
- 14:34Speaker 1: touring with a show and we stopped it kind of
- 14:37Speaker 1: a dairy queen type of thing, but sort of in
- 14:39Speaker 1: love a forest for some reason. And one of the
- 14:42Speaker 1: girls with us, she's going to get a cheeseburger. She says,
- 14:44Speaker 1: what kind of cheese do you have? I think it's
- 14:47Speaker 1: somewhere in Michigan. And the person literally goes cheese. It's square,
- 14:56Speaker 1: it's orange, and it's fa That person went home and
- 15:02Speaker 1: told her family, you wouldn't believe what this girl, I
- 15:05Speaker 1: made a kind of cheese. It's it's cheese. So all right, Neil,
- 15:18Speaker 1: I was gonna do it. No, you do it, you
- 15:22Speaker 1: do it? No, no, no, go ahead. I was just
- 15:23Speaker 1: gonna be. I was just gonna be like, I was
- 15:25Speaker 1: just gonna say this, Neil, You're one of the few
- 15:28Speaker 1: people in the history of television. There's like a handful
- 15:31Speaker 1: of people that went from a show that ran for
- 15:35Speaker 1: eight years to a show that ran for eleven years.
- 15:39Speaker 1: What did the middle eleven nine to a nine year
- 15:43Speaker 1: seventeen years? Seventeen years straight on television? Man? And that
- 15:47Speaker 1: actually and then actually, Neil, you went onto another show
- 15:50Speaker 1: right away, right, So you did eight and then that
- 15:51Speaker 1: one didn't last, right, But you did eighteen years in
- 15:53Speaker 1: a row on TV. Yeah, yes, that might be a
- 15:56Speaker 1: record that You've got to be on a very short list.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It has to be baby show. But if they're whatever
- 16:02Speaker 1: the list is, however long it is, I am the
- 16:05Speaker 1: least famous person on it. That's not true. I disagree.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I disagree. No, that's true, but it's just well, you know,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I was trying for a long time before Scrubs came along,
- 16:18Speaker 1: and then I finally the door opened, you know, and
- 16:20Speaker 1: I got let into the party, and luckily enough, I
- 16:25Speaker 1: just stayed. Now tell us Neil, that's a good segue
- 16:28Speaker 1: into because whenever we have the cast members on, we
- 16:31Speaker 1: try and we've all sort of told our stories of
- 16:34Speaker 1: how he got on the show, and Bills sold a
- 16:36Speaker 1: really funny story about you and which I'll let you
- 16:38Speaker 1: tell or your version of it, because he was talking
- 16:41Speaker 1: about how you initially read for Cox and and then
- 16:44Speaker 1: when he said you wanted to be the janitor, you
- 16:45Speaker 1: said something like, but I'll still have a stethoscope, right
- 16:48Speaker 1: or something. Yeah, Well, Build tends to doing Belish's story.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Oh really yeah, over time. I know if you were
- 16:59Speaker 1: to Build, if you've heard a Bill story like at
- 17:01Speaker 1: the beginning, and then what it's like in two years,
- 17:03Speaker 1: it's it's like the ultimate game of telephone. It's become
- 17:06Speaker 1: something exaggerated. But yes, and I thought before, what kind
- 17:09Speaker 1: of person just takes his story and changes it improves it?
- 17:14Speaker 1: Possibly a comedy writer. It kind of makes sense. But
- 17:19Speaker 1: you know what was going on for you before, like
- 17:21Speaker 1: what were you up to you before Scrubs? And then
- 17:23Speaker 1: how did you come to be on Scrubs? Well, I
- 17:25Speaker 1: kind of just say you had done a bunch of
- 17:27Speaker 1: movies though in Chicago and stuff like that, small parts, small,
- 17:31Speaker 1: nothing of any significance. But the baseball movie that you did.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You were one of the key players in that in
- 17:37Speaker 1: that movie Rookie of the Years, correct, right right? And yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 1: the out part in Major League as well. I was
- 17:44Speaker 1: doing baseball movies only, you know, I went into not
- 17:51Speaker 1: even read, but years ago whenever they would have made
- 17:53Speaker 1: eight men out. I somehow got a chance to be
- 17:56Speaker 1: one of the baseball players. And I went in and
- 17:59Speaker 1: she said, so do you a baseball I said yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 1: She said do you really? You know, like she pushed me.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I said, well, it's not like I could have been
- 18:06Speaker 1: a pro, you know, And I saw her face fall.
- 18:09Speaker 1: She lost interest in media. I'm twenty five years old.
- 18:12Speaker 1: If I could have been a pro, i'd be a pro.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And then I see the movie and there's the baseball
- 18:18Speaker 1: players they're playing catch. Yeah, it sounds like doing the
- 18:21Speaker 1: movie growing the ball back and forth. We we only
- 18:25Speaker 1: got pros for this, you know, anyway. So I wasn't
- 18:29Speaker 1: in that Baseball movie, but I was just doing little
- 18:32Speaker 1: little parts of you Can Get I was starting to
- 18:34Speaker 1: get star on things a little bit, and uh, and
- 18:38Speaker 1: then this came up. I actually, I feel like I've
- 18:41Speaker 1: told this story before. It's okay to repeat yourself. Yes, yeah, man,
- 18:45Speaker 1: are our fans might not know it, and I'm sure
- 18:47Speaker 1: they'll love the story. Okay. I was doing guest stars
- 18:51Speaker 1: on things, and where's the first half of my career.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I'd been kind of a straight actor, kind of a
- 18:57Speaker 1: drama leaning drifted over onto the comedy side, and thank
- 19:01Speaker 1: goodness I did, because that's where things opened up. I
- 19:03Speaker 1: had done an episode of Drew Carey and Krista Miller
- 19:08Speaker 1: was on that show, and shortly afterwards friends of mine
- 19:12Speaker 1: said that they're going out to dinner with Chris Miller
- 19:14Speaker 1: and her new husband, who turns out was Bill Lawrence.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And I said, years ago, I met a Bill Lawrence.
- 19:21Speaker 1: We played on the same basketball team out here right
- 19:23Speaker 1: before I left and went back to Chicago, and he
- 19:27Speaker 1: was the same guy, and so we you know, I
- 19:32Speaker 1: went to their house for drinks or whatever. And then
- 19:35Speaker 1: within a month or two he had this show that
- 19:37Speaker 1: he had created, and so I got called in and
- 19:40Speaker 1: I said, thanks for calling me in. He said, I didn't.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I didn't give him your name. They because the same
- 19:45Speaker 1: people that directed to Drew Carey, I think cast Scrubs. Anyways,
- 19:51Speaker 1: So then I read the doctor Cox and he said
- 19:53Speaker 1: that was good. You're not going to get this part.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I already know who I'm going to give it to.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I said, oh, well, that's you know, fair enough, and
- 20:00Speaker 1: he says, but you want to read this. He hands
- 20:01Speaker 1: me two pages and it's the scene with the janitor
- 20:05Speaker 1: and JD at the door, and he goes, good, you
- 20:07Speaker 1: want to do that? So sure you know it's a job.
- 20:11Speaker 1: As a job, that's all I've been doing. It's five
- 20:12Speaker 1: hundred bucks or whatever it is for the day. And
- 20:17Speaker 1: and then I think what was significant is between doing
- 20:21Speaker 1: the pilot and that's all I was promised the janitor
- 20:23Speaker 1: wasn't going to do anything else. Bill came to and
- 20:28Speaker 1: saw an imple prov show that I did, and he
- 20:32Speaker 1: enjoyed it and learned I don't know that I could
- 20:37Speaker 1: think on my feet, and I think this made all
- 20:41Speaker 1: the difference that probably the first scene of the next
- 20:45Speaker 1: episode when the show got picked up we rehearsed it,
- 20:47Speaker 1: he goes, yeah, good, and then if you think of
- 20:49Speaker 1: something else, just throw it in, do it, do it?
- 20:53Speaker 1: Take that or we would goof around in rehearsal. You
- 20:55Speaker 1: would say good, keep that remember. And so that for me,
- 21:00Speaker 1: considering it was a pretty small part. That was uh,
- 21:04Speaker 1: that made all the difference if I got to have
- 21:06Speaker 1: such latitude. What was amazing for for me watching you
- 21:11Speaker 1: was Bill's respect for how understandably for how funny you were,
- 21:17Speaker 1: because you know, with everyone else, he would, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: the rule on Scrubs was kind of like, okay, you know,
- 21:23Speaker 1: make sure you get it as written, and then if
- 21:25Speaker 1: you guys have time, you can you can mess around
- 21:27Speaker 1: a little bit. And and and and you know, and
- 21:29Speaker 1: and and and we all did that. We all would
- 21:30Speaker 1: would come up with stuff. But with Neil, Bill would
- 21:33Speaker 1: just be like, all right, Neil, you can make something
- 21:35Speaker 1: funnier than this, So what do you what do you
- 21:36Speaker 1: want to say? And and and invariably Neil would just
- 21:40Speaker 1: come out and sometimes they were long and like and
- 21:42Speaker 1: and Bill would put them in, but they were I mean, Neil,
- 21:45Speaker 1: I you know, all my stuff was with you the
- 21:47Speaker 1: first season, and I just I don't think I ever last. Sorry,
- 21:51Speaker 1: that's what I meant to say. I was just I'd
- 21:53Speaker 1: never really worked with anyone like that. I never worked
- 21:55Speaker 1: I mean, I was so blown away by you because
- 21:57Speaker 1: I had never I mean it was my first big job, obviously,
- 21:59Speaker 1: but even in my other stuff I had done, I
- 22:01Speaker 1: had never worked with someone who could think so quickly
- 22:03Speaker 1: on their feet and would just be adding stuff that was,
- 22:06Speaker 1: with all due respect to Bill, even finalier than what
- 22:09Speaker 1: was written on the page. And Bill said, if it's
- 22:12Speaker 1: funnier than what I wrote, that's fine. People will think
- 22:15Speaker 1: I wrote it. Yeah, So he was fine with that. Yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 1: Well I appreciate that compliment. And it was a I think,
- 22:24Speaker 1: very rare a situation that that unfolded the way it did.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And when when that show ended and they went on
- 22:31Speaker 1: to the middle, I said, well, this is great. The
- 22:34Speaker 1: only the only bad part will be if they're sticklers
- 22:37Speaker 1: about the script, because I'm not used to that, and
- 22:40Speaker 1: they were sticklers about this, and I had a lot
- 22:43Speaker 1: more to say. That must have been so frustrating for you,
- 22:46Speaker 1: because I mean, I just can't one thing about Bill.
- 22:49Speaker 1: We always joke about his ego and how competitive he is,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but he really always he was very open to people contributing.
- 22:55Speaker 1: That's not to say, you know, he was the editor ultimately,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and he would decide what was in and what wasn't.
- 22:59Speaker 1: And sometimes we thought stuff was hilarious that he wouldn't
- 23:02Speaker 1: use it. But he was very open to everybody collaborating.
- 23:06Speaker 1: And then it's like Neil said, he goes on to
- 23:07Speaker 1: another show and they're like, great, we just want you
- 23:10Speaker 1: to say exactly what's written, and you can't. You know,
- 23:13Speaker 1: if I hear that story and I go, what were
- 23:15Speaker 1: you thinking? I mean, you you contributed so much to
- 23:20Speaker 1: the humor of Scrubs. I just can't believe. It's like
- 23:22Speaker 1: not letting a racehorse run. Well, you know, the difference
- 23:26Speaker 1: if it's a racehorse is running around and someone says, okay,
- 23:31Speaker 1: I can see that you're very fast. This is a farm,
- 23:35Speaker 1: we need you to pull that plot running gets it.
- 23:40Speaker 1: The difference is the tone of the show. Our Scrubs,
- 23:44Speaker 1: even though it had it's nice, uh you know, it
- 23:46Speaker 1: could turn on a dime and be heartfelt and sincere
- 23:49Speaker 1: in that. Other than that, and much of it, it
- 23:52Speaker 1: wasn't very grounded. It was well, all the fantasies and stuff.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I mean it was very and the janitor could have
- 23:58Speaker 1: turned out to be a Martian. Okay, sure, I guess true.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I was playing a family man in Indiana. You can't
- 24:07Speaker 1: just say crazy things right right right where where one
- 24:11Speaker 1: of your specialties was just I remember that Bill told
- 24:14Speaker 1: the story about you getting one thing you improved that
- 24:18Speaker 1: he kept all in about getting into a fight with
- 24:20Speaker 1: a with a chicken. Do you remember that? Yeah, it
- 24:23Speaker 1: was a duck, I think, and a duck. I think
- 24:26Speaker 1: I feel like that was written or partly written or
- 24:29Speaker 1: mostly written, and I might have gone off a little bit,
- 24:31Speaker 1: but I think I think the start of it may
- 24:32Speaker 1: have been. But as I recall you, as you did
- 24:35Speaker 1: so many times hilariously, would just go off with it.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And so, you know, a lot of times we'd be like,
- 24:39Speaker 1: this is hilarious. I don't know if Bill's gonna put
- 24:41Speaker 1: this in the show or not, but on set we're
- 24:42Speaker 1: all fucking cracking up. And then and then it almost
- 24:45Speaker 1: invariably you'd see the episode cut together, it would be
- 24:47Speaker 1: in there. I remember one of my favorite I mean,
- 24:50Speaker 1: you and I had some I mean, I'm not just
- 24:51Speaker 1: saying this because you're here, man, I I genuinely think
- 24:54Speaker 1: and no offense. Donald, I love you to death, but
- 24:56Speaker 1: I thought, I genuinely think you You've probably made me
- 24:59Speaker 1: laugh harder than anyone and else on earth. Well wow, okay,
- 25:03Speaker 1: then I remember I remember an episode and they wound
- 25:08Speaker 1: up changing the episode. But the storyline between the two
- 25:11Speaker 1: of you was about a piece of fruit and that
- 25:15Speaker 1: you had never tried before, that that the janitor had
- 25:18Speaker 1: never tried before. And the whole storyline was you finally
- 25:25Speaker 1: getting this fruit at the end of the show and
- 25:29Speaker 1: tasting the fruit, and and I don't remember where it
- 25:31Speaker 1: went after that, but I just remember you doing a
- 25:34Speaker 1: bunch of really funny things about fruit, and then they
- 25:38Speaker 1: changed it to like a scooter or some shit like that.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I don't know what it was. Oh, you know, remember this.
- 25:43Speaker 1: This reminds me yesterday because Zach sent me an episode
- 25:47Speaker 1: of this thing to listen to with John McGinley. Yeah,
- 25:52Speaker 1: and Nick came up, what episode wasn't the Janitor in? Yes? Yeah?
- 25:57Speaker 1: Was that that episode? It's called what is it? Cups? Yes,
- 26:01Speaker 1: I think, because there was an outtake of me wiping
- 26:03Speaker 1: out on a scooter coming in the front door of
- 26:07Speaker 1: the hospital, but that had never aired because I was
- 26:10Speaker 1: that was the first season, and I was edited out
- 26:12Speaker 1: of it. And that's the only time that happened. Yeah,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I knew it. I knew, I knew, I knew as
- 26:18Speaker 1: the worst memory in the world, remembered something because I thought,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I thought the story was so funny. The fruit story
- 26:23Speaker 1: was so funny, and it was like a peach or
- 26:26Speaker 1: a p and you kept improvising different fruits when you
- 26:29Speaker 1: were telling that story. I have and I still have
- 26:32Speaker 1: no memory whatsoever of a fruit and a plot line
- 26:36Speaker 1: about fruit because I wasn't in it, so I blocked
- 26:40Speaker 1: it out of spite, Neil. One of my favorite I
- 26:45Speaker 1: have two favorite moments that always come into mind when
- 26:49Speaker 1: I think of laughing with you. The first is um
- 26:53Speaker 1: in the Wizard of Oz episode when you and I
- 26:56Speaker 1: did this whole long riff about um about seeing a
- 27:00Speaker 1: manatee on the hospital and then you said, um, I said,
- 27:05Speaker 1: is there some sort of underground canal system or something?
- 27:08Speaker 1: I think I think I saw a manatee And you said,
- 27:11Speaker 1: was his name Julian? And then I said, I don't know.
- 27:16Speaker 1: We didn't exchange pleasant tries, and you go, that's Julian.
- 27:23Speaker 1: That was good, I feel like was the writers, though
- 27:26Speaker 1: I don't know. No, no, you made that up. That
- 27:28Speaker 1: was all me and you just being silly again. It
- 27:30Speaker 1: was one of those things where we were like, I
- 27:32Speaker 1: don't think this is ever going to be in the show,
- 27:33Speaker 1: but we were just cracking each other up about there's
- 27:36Speaker 1: a manatee under the hospital and has a name, and
- 27:38Speaker 1: you you're familiar with his his social behavior. This is
- 27:42Speaker 1: what I'm talking about being able to wing it. Yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I couldn't have thrown that in on the middle. I
- 27:48Speaker 1: was working on Corey Mike. It was good. There's a
- 27:51Speaker 1: many lives underground and the other I know, the other
- 27:58Speaker 1: one that you yeah, you do, go ahead. Uh it's uh,
- 28:02Speaker 1: it's it's this. It's finger thumb finger if you if
- 28:09Speaker 1: you guys want to watch on the on the scrubs
- 28:10Speaker 1: gag reel flipper reel that you can find on YouTube.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I forgot what season it is. But Neil, the janitor
- 28:16Speaker 1: as wife had made me scrubs short shorts and um
- 28:20Speaker 1: and he's like, look, I really want you to wear
- 28:22Speaker 1: these to work, and I'm like I'm like, I'm I'm
- 28:25Speaker 1: a I'm a doctor. I can't wear short shorts to work.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Scrubs cut off really high. Yeah, so high, like my
- 28:34Speaker 1: balls would have hung out of them. And then Neil goes,
- 28:37Speaker 1: the good Lord didn't bless my wife with all ten fingers.
- 28:41Speaker 1: She only has pointer on one hand and thumb pinky
- 28:44Speaker 1: on the other, meaning that that that that it had
- 28:49Speaker 1: been really hard for her to make these short shorts,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and I was disrespecting her if I didn't wear them.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And I just couldn't make it through. I could not
- 28:55Speaker 1: make it through with with Neil going pointer and thumb pinky. That's,
- 28:59Speaker 1: by the way I life. That probably doesn't exist. No, yeah,
- 29:03Speaker 1: she didn't. She didn't exist because you get married at
- 29:05Speaker 1: the end of the at the end of this true,
- 29:09Speaker 1: that's true. And Neil, you know, Neil, we've been joking
- 29:12Speaker 1: this first season. It's down like, you know, we haven't
- 29:13Speaker 1: seen these in twenty years, and as I'm sure you haven't.
- 29:17Speaker 1: And you know Bill, you know one of the Bill
- 29:19Speaker 1: is ms that he always says is you know, I
- 29:22Speaker 1: was debating season one if the Janitor was just gonna
- 29:24Speaker 1: be a figment of JD's imagination. Well, every episode we
- 29:27Speaker 1: go through, for the most part, we see little moments
- 29:29Speaker 1: where the Janitor does interact with other people, and and
- 29:32Speaker 1: every time we bring it up to Bill. We're like, so, yeah,
- 29:35Speaker 1: you're holding onto that. But you know, you know in
- 29:37Speaker 1: this episode, the janitor, you know, for example, in this one,
- 29:40Speaker 1: he offers two baseball tickets. Sorry Franklin, godbetter, who's our
- 29:45Speaker 1: who is one of our assistant directors is playing the
- 29:48Speaker 1: the the actor who sees Neil with the two tickets
- 29:52Speaker 1: and says I'll go and and Neil's like, not you.
- 29:55Speaker 1: And it's like another example of like, okay, well then
- 29:58Speaker 1: other people will see the janitor. Bill, I watched that yesterday,
- 30:03Speaker 1: that that was a moment that was added to the
- 30:06Speaker 1: script that wasn't in there. Yeah, and that you part
- 30:10Speaker 1: for Franklin. I think that might be the phone one
- 30:12Speaker 1: of the only times. I mean you might now he
- 30:14Speaker 1: dressed up like the bunny. Remember Franklin dressed up like
- 30:16Speaker 1: a bunny. No, I'm not I'm not saying that Franklin
- 30:18Speaker 1: wasn't in the show more. I'm saying where it's a
- 30:21Speaker 1: really funny moment where Neil goes, uh, what what do
- 30:24Speaker 1: you want to what do you want to go to
- 30:27Speaker 1: a baseball game and have popcorn? And then Gig walks
- 30:31Speaker 1: away like stopped messing with me. And then he pulls
- 30:33Speaker 1: the two tickets out of his shirt. He's like, the
- 30:35Speaker 1: last time I reach out, and I was laughing out loud, going,
- 30:39Speaker 1: do you think that's the only time in Scrub's history
- 30:42Speaker 1: that the janitor river like made a genuine appeal to Jad?
- 30:47Speaker 1: You know what if watching that, I thought, I don't
- 30:50Speaker 1: think I played that right because I said it very sarcastically.
- 30:54Speaker 1: So of course you walked away. You know, we don't
- 30:57Speaker 1: want to do go to a baseball game and we
- 30:58Speaker 1: get up, But I probably should have said, well, would
- 31:02Speaker 1: you like to go to a baseball game with me?
- 31:04Speaker 1: And we can share popcorn? I mean, it's something that
- 31:07Speaker 1: sounds a little more sincere, right, But j D had
- 31:10Speaker 1: to you know, it had to be on the line
- 31:11Speaker 1: because j D had to be like, stop sucking with me,
- 31:14Speaker 1: roll his eyes and walk away, right, Or maybe the
- 31:16Speaker 1: janitor just has no skill that offering an invitation, they
- 31:21Speaker 1: all come out very shark cast Would you like to
- 31:24Speaker 1: come to a party with me? I guess would you
- 31:30Speaker 1: marry me? Please? So what was the troop that you
- 31:34Speaker 1: were doing improv with Neil that Bill saw you Early
- 31:38Speaker 1: in the early days, we were called beer shark mice,
- 31:43Speaker 1: and it was that the Io West, which no longer
- 31:47Speaker 1: exists a theater, but we must have done it for
- 31:50Speaker 1: as it turns out, eighteen years something like that. It
- 31:54Speaker 1: was crazy. Wow you throughout the names real quick. Pete Honey,
- 31:58Speaker 1: Dave Keckner, Pat Finn, Mike Coleman, Paul Valancourt. I hope
- 32:03Speaker 1: I didn't forget anybody. Um when I first moved out here,
- 32:08Speaker 1: removed out here after five years in Chicago. We had
- 32:11Speaker 1: been doing it out of theater in Chicago, not the
- 32:13Speaker 1: same group, but all those individuals with difference, and he
- 32:19Speaker 1: only put just put a group together out here when
- 32:21Speaker 1: they Sharon, who owns it, opened up a branch out here,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and we all had a virtually nothing to do. Nobody's
- 32:28Speaker 1: career was rolling, and so that's what that's what we
- 32:31Speaker 1: did all the time. That was maybe nine What was that?
- 32:36Speaker 1: Was there a specific game or that you guys would
- 32:38Speaker 1: play or structure of your improv Uh no, not really,
- 32:45Speaker 1: but we didn't do games. That's a different approach. It
- 32:49Speaker 1: was there's something called a herald that is a long form.
- 32:55Speaker 1: We would get out there, take his guest and go
- 32:57Speaker 1: for a half hour, and we didn't do that, but
- 33:01Speaker 1: it was along those lines to just take a suggestion
- 33:03Speaker 1: and then the audience has done particular that's amazing. He
- 33:07Speaker 1: just roll for half hour. It was a good group
- 33:09Speaker 1: and it was it's not necessarily dead now, but it
- 33:13Speaker 1: was great fun and a great thing to do, and
- 33:18Speaker 1: I enjoyed doing it. And then after a while sometimes
- 33:20Speaker 1: I still want to do do a show and I say,
- 33:23Speaker 1: you know, I'm closing in at sixty years old. I
- 33:25Speaker 1: don't think I was twenty five. I wasn't interested in
- 33:28Speaker 1: saying sixty year olds entertained me in any way. Oh,
- 33:33Speaker 1: I have no doubt that you would sell out man. People.
- 33:36Speaker 1: People love seeing you, and you were so good at it.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I mean I remember thinking that when we're doing Scrubs,
- 33:41Speaker 1: that that just cracking up at the stuff you would
- 33:44Speaker 1: come up with and going out. I would love to
- 33:45Speaker 1: go see one of your IMPROPM shows when we may
- 33:47Speaker 1: have gone when we were involved or no, just maybe
- 33:52Speaker 1: he came with when we were doing when we were
- 33:54Speaker 1: doing scrubs. Were you doing this show too? What are
- 33:57Speaker 1: you doing the improp show? Okay, I feel like I
- 34:00Speaker 1: must have come once, but I don't think you did
- 34:02Speaker 1: because I didn't, you know, feel strongly about this, but
- 34:06Speaker 1: people had heard that this was going on, and it
- 34:11Speaker 1: went on for all the years of the Scrubs, and
- 34:13Speaker 1: so people would often I thought, if they're just striking
- 34:15Speaker 1: up a conversation or or being you know, they really
- 34:19Speaker 1: meant it when you do that, show you here's what time.
- 34:23Speaker 1: And it became like for the literally like for the
- 34:25Speaker 1: fiftieth time, I'm saying to somebody Saturday and at eight
- 34:29Speaker 1: o'clock Io Theater, and as far as I recall, no
- 34:33Speaker 1: one ever came. So I got tired of being asked.
- 34:35Speaker 1: You know what I mean. I didn't need Yeah, I
- 34:37Speaker 1: don't need anybody to come, but the house is fault.
- 34:40Speaker 1: I saw a video or something I saw. Yeah, that's
- 34:41Speaker 1: what we did. We saw a video. Bill showed us
- 34:43Speaker 1: a video. Maybe that's what it was. Bill sort of
- 34:45Speaker 1: was showing us a video of you. And because I
- 34:49Speaker 1: feel like I have a somewhere in my brain remember yeah,
- 34:53Speaker 1: and it was you and somebody on stage and it
- 34:55Speaker 1: was like, uh, where you were a drill not a
- 34:59Speaker 1: drill sergeant, but something like that, where you were an
- 35:01Speaker 1: army and I just remember it a long time. It
- 35:06Speaker 1: was it was you remember that improv from twenty years ago? Right, Yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 1: that's uh, no one ever. Maybe it's possible, but pretty
- 35:15Speaker 1: much you never remember seeing you did. Someone will say,
- 35:17Speaker 1: I sho you guys numbervide once you were a firement
- 35:19Speaker 1: and I don't. I don't remembering that. Um. Shall we
- 35:25Speaker 1: get into the show, so, Neil, what we do is
- 35:27Speaker 1: we just kind of talk through the episode and point
- 35:29Speaker 1: out things that made us laugh or or or or
- 35:32Speaker 1: just any thoughts we have. But we should probably take
- 35:35Speaker 1: a break, right Joel, Alright, a break, Neil. This is
- 35:38Speaker 1: a real show. We have commercials and shit, I know
- 35:41Speaker 1: I heard. I'm very impressed. Yes, no joking around when
- 35:44Speaker 1: it comes to being real, right, Donald, I mean, now
- 35:49Speaker 1: this is the real deal. This is like a real
- 35:50Speaker 1: radio show. Well I mean a real podcast, a real podcast. Yeah, yeah,
- 35:54Speaker 1: that's how you want to all right, tell the people
- 35:56Speaker 1: will be right back, Donald, you already did. Okay, we'll
- 35:59Speaker 1: be right back. Alrighty, we're back. We're back back with
- 36:10Speaker 1: Neil Flynn. Everybody the people spoke, they said Neil Flynn,
- 36:14Speaker 1: Bring on Neil Flynn, and we got him. Has everybody
- 36:16Speaker 1: else been here? You are? No, Ken has not been
- 36:20Speaker 1: on the show, Jenkins, but we've had the other lead
- 36:23Speaker 1: cast members Yeah, we had Judy on, We've had Johnny on,
- 36:27Speaker 1: We've had Sarah on. We now have you on. We
- 36:29Speaker 1: had nil on, Chris Dun you know, speaking of Ken Jenkins,
- 36:35Speaker 1: I am just but you know when we started the
- 36:37Speaker 1: show who he was the old guy? Yeah, without you,
- 36:41Speaker 1: no offense, but clearly Yeah, it's how we thought of him,
- 36:44Speaker 1: and you even more than I because you're younger than
- 36:47Speaker 1: I am. I'm almost that age, You're almost the age months. Yes,
- 36:54Speaker 1: I'm months away. And I think Johnny SE's a little
- 36:56Speaker 1: older than me, so I think he probably is that age. Yeah. Wow,
- 37:01Speaker 1: I haven't sense so I haven't seen well. The last
- 37:04Speaker 1: time I saw him was when we did the uh
- 37:06Speaker 1: the reunion thing. It looked great and he looked amazing. Yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 1: I want to get him to come on this. When
- 37:11Speaker 1: we did some we had some sort of group email
- 37:12Speaker 1: about hey, do you guys want to do X, Y
- 37:14Speaker 1: or Z and and everyone was like sure, sure, sure,
- 37:17Speaker 1: you know, we we almost all always say yes because
- 37:19Speaker 1: it means we get to all get together and have
- 37:21Speaker 1: a drink and make each other laugh. And and Ken
- 37:24Speaker 1: was like, I'm moving. I I've got a lot going on,
- 37:27Speaker 1: And I was like, my feelings were. I mean, I
- 37:30Speaker 1: know it wasn't personal, but I was all like, Ken,
- 37:32Speaker 1: you know you can. You can take a couple hours
- 37:34Speaker 1: off from moving and comes out hide to us. But
- 37:36Speaker 1: I got a lot going on. I got ship to do.
- 37:39Speaker 1: It sounds just sounds like work. I got shipped to do.
- 37:42Speaker 1: And and it was kind of a Kirk goodbye. It
- 37:44Speaker 1: was like it was like very Kelso it was like,
- 37:46Speaker 1: but good to hear from you all. I remember that.
- 37:50Speaker 1: But I find it interesting that it was an email
- 37:53Speaker 1: and you've put a voice to it. Of all. The
- 38:01Speaker 1: funny thing is about like people always ask you, like
- 38:03Speaker 1: what people what people cast members are like? And I
- 38:05Speaker 1: said the most different from his character was Ken Jenkins
- 38:08Speaker 1: because he was the sweetest man you ever met in
- 38:10Speaker 1: your whole life, and he was playing this you know,
- 38:12Speaker 1: tough jerk. Yes, And I noticed that on the episode
- 38:17Speaker 1: that it was early on obviously the first season, and
- 38:20Speaker 1: everyone was still a little bit one dimensional. I don't
- 38:24Speaker 1: want to say that's not exactly true, but Ken was.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I'm like, look how mean Ken is being? Like in
- 38:30Speaker 1: the pilot when he turned into a demon for a minute,
- 38:32Speaker 1: he was still in that mode. Yeah, well, I guess
- 38:36Speaker 1: watch sport nobody cares that sort of thing. By the end,
- 38:41Speaker 1: he was like this kindly old doddering man having a
- 38:46Speaker 1: nice muffin. Yeah, and also at the bar in the Bahamas,
- 38:49Speaker 1: like you know, he became I think Bill finally, like
- 38:52Speaker 1: Evel one episode early on here in season one, we
- 38:56Speaker 1: showed that back he back in the day, used to
- 38:59Speaker 1: write love songs on the guitar to his wife. I
- 39:01Speaker 1: think Bill was beginning to plant seeds of him having
- 39:04Speaker 1: a softer side. But you're right by the end of
- 39:06Speaker 1: the season. By the end of the show, he's he
- 39:08Speaker 1: was a sweetheart or more of a start and uh
- 39:12Speaker 1: like Ted was sort of his best friend, wasn't here
- 39:16Speaker 1: of the show? Yeah, and this one he calls him Ned.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Finally he's still all these years that we assume that
- 39:25Speaker 1: that Ted has been working for him, he still doesn't
- 39:27Speaker 1: know his name. He calls him Ned. Yeah, but that
- 39:30Speaker 1: went away. I mean, yeah, they became kind of buddies. Yeah.
- 39:34Speaker 1: I found it very crazy. I thought it was crazy
- 39:37Speaker 1: that Ted has been plotting against Kelso yeah, so long
- 39:41Speaker 1: he's hired a hit man. He's hired, right, He's like,
- 39:43Speaker 1: I know a hit man. Yeah, you and I we
- 39:45Speaker 1: can do it. That was a really funny part of
- 39:47Speaker 1: this episode where we have that long, uncomfortable laugh and
- 39:50Speaker 1: because he mentions that he knows a guy who can
- 39:52Speaker 1: end it all, and then we have that long, uncomfortable
- 39:55Speaker 1: laugh and then he's like, no, seriously, just one phone call.
- 39:58Speaker 1: One phone call. So that means that Sammy as Sam
- 40:01Speaker 1: ted Ted, has found Ah. He's got a hit man
- 40:04Speaker 1: ready to go whenever the time is right, right right.
- 40:07Speaker 1: He just needs somebody to he needs somebody and be like, no,
- 40:09Speaker 1: you're right, we should kill this fucker. It just means it, yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 1: someone second, the emotion it was. I hadn't seen Sam's
- 40:16Speaker 1: face since he passed away, and it was nice, but
- 40:20Speaker 1: you know, strange, see Sam, Yeah, man, we've been we've
- 40:26Speaker 1: been talking about that on the podcast and how obviously
- 40:30Speaker 1: it's caused me to look even closer at his work
- 40:33Speaker 1: on the show and just how incredibly funny he was.
- 40:36Speaker 1: We recently just watched an episode where he and Judy.
- 40:38Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember this one, Neil or
- 40:40Speaker 1: he and Judy serenade a patient and seeing this beautiful
- 40:44Speaker 1: harmony together and it was so moving. I mean obviously
- 40:49Speaker 1: because he passed away, but it just it just really
- 40:51Speaker 1: it just really just drove it home. How how incredibly
- 40:54Speaker 1: talented a guy he was. Yeah, that was his character
- 41:00Speaker 1: added a nice came in handy. You know, the so
- 41:04Speaker 1: many shows that succeed, I think build a world of
- 41:07Speaker 1: supporting characters and that you can go to or just
- 41:11Speaker 1: like probably number one would be The Simpsons. They have
- 41:14Speaker 1: like a poster and there's two hundred recognizable characters in
- 41:17Speaker 1: the Yeah. Of course, give me thirty years and maybe
- 41:20Speaker 1: I could do that too with a TV show. They've
- 41:23Speaker 1: had a lot of time to characters. But but Scrubbs
- 41:27Speaker 1: did a good job of that. Yeah, and you know Bill,
- 41:29Speaker 1: Bill always called him his assassins. Those people like you
- 41:32Speaker 1: know Bob Clendenen, or Matt Winston or or or Phil
- 41:37Speaker 1: Lewis who played Hooch who became Rob Mascio who be Kate.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Well Rob had a bigger part than those guys. But
- 41:43Speaker 1: I mean just mean, like you know, think about Phil
- 41:47Speaker 1: Lewis who came on and would do I don't know
- 41:49Speaker 1: how many episodes he did total, but he's directing now, yeah, yeah,
- 41:52Speaker 1: he's yeah, he's he's doing very well as a Yeah,
- 41:54Speaker 1: I mean I don't know if if this happens to you, Donald.
- 41:57Speaker 1: But I'll be walking down the street and people like, hey,
- 41:59Speaker 1: love on the show, which is crazy, and it's like
- 42:02Speaker 1: it's like a little slogan about Phil Lewis's character, and
- 42:05Speaker 1: he must have done like a handful. I mean, that's
- 42:07Speaker 1: the amount of influence. Sorry, that's the amount of impact
- 42:10Speaker 1: he had on fans because they were just like they
- 42:11Speaker 1: loved him so much. Well, remember it started off as
- 42:14Speaker 1: Turner and Hooch, where Tom Hanks's brother came on as
- 42:17Speaker 1: Turner and Phil Lewis played Hooch and they had this
- 42:20Speaker 1: whole little adventure that they went on together as Turner
- 42:23Speaker 1: and Hooch in the hospital they got. Yeah, they somehow
- 42:26Speaker 1: got paired together. One of them was a medical doc
- 42:28Speaker 1: and one of them was a surgeon, and they would
- 42:30Speaker 1: tag team a bunch of patients. Right, and if it
- 42:34Speaker 1: was elaborate way for the writers to get a Turner
- 42:36Speaker 1: and Hooch joke, right, But they got Tom Hanks's brother
- 42:39Speaker 1: to play the Turner character just like in the movie. Right,
- 42:44Speaker 1: And then somehow it turned into this whole story with
- 42:49Speaker 1: Phil coming back as this crazy ass doctor. But when
- 42:52Speaker 1: it originally happens, the two of them are you know
- 42:55Speaker 1: he's not crazy or anything like that. Then it turned
- 42:58Speaker 1: into it turned into us joking around like, oh, who's
- 43:01Speaker 1: just crazy? Who's just so crazy? And then by the
- 43:04Speaker 1: end of it is not who he's genuinely crazy. People
- 43:11Speaker 1: people love that, but no, no, no, not joking. Who
- 43:14Speaker 1: is fucking dangerous? Yeah? Like and then and then there
- 43:18Speaker 1: was an episode where you put like someone was that me?
- 43:20Speaker 1: Or you put Bully on cubes in the shower head? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 43:23Speaker 1: who who's funny? Y'all put Bully on cost in the
- 43:26Speaker 1: shower and we're sitting there shy like he's like he's
- 43:30Speaker 1: like him with him with the crack lighter that goes
- 43:35Speaker 1: like you know, that's a very popular gift. I always
- 43:38Speaker 1: use which with like a six inch lighter flame. Yeah.
- 43:42Speaker 1: By the way, I remember a funny thing about Tom
- 43:45Speaker 1: Hanks's brother who was on the show. He did the
- 43:48Speaker 1: voice for one of the toy story things, not not
- 43:51Speaker 1: the not the movies, but like I don't know if
- 43:53Speaker 1: it was like a book or or something. Yeah, something
- 43:57Speaker 1: that Tom Hanks couldn't be bothered to do, and he
- 43:59Speaker 1: he had a similar voice, so so he would just
- 44:02Speaker 1: throw him you know, I guess being generous to his brother,
- 44:05Speaker 1: like here, you do some of this stuff, and uh,
- 44:07Speaker 1: and I just remember learning for the first time that
- 44:09Speaker 1: then you know that he that he did some of
- 44:12Speaker 1: the non movie stuff. That's amazing little trivia for you
- 44:15Speaker 1: out there, just a little trivia. Elliot is into some
- 44:18Speaker 1: kinky stuff, right, I mean, I just realized that is
- 44:20Speaker 1: this a runner through the series. This episode opens up
- 44:23Speaker 1: with her talking to Scott Folly about um being wanting
- 44:26Speaker 1: to be called a bad girl, and they're gonna go
- 44:28Speaker 1: shopping or stop by her house for a schoolgirl outfit.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And then I still started thinking about all these times
- 44:33Speaker 1: in the in the series where Elliot's got some some
- 44:36Speaker 1: some some kink. She likes the role play, Yeah, she
- 44:39Speaker 1: likes it, the dirty stuff. She like the dirty talk.
- 44:43Speaker 1: I think that's even one of my lines in the show.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Oh she like a the dirty Talk episode. No, not
- 44:49Speaker 1: in this episode, but like later on in the series,
- 44:52Speaker 1: I know, I say something, and then later on when
- 44:54Speaker 1: she and Folly are making out, she's like say, um, intercourse,
- 44:59Speaker 1: like she's got these weird kings. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 45:03Speaker 1: that's that's that's I Yeah. I remember there was one
- 45:08Speaker 1: where I was like an apple thief. I had to
- 45:10Speaker 1: be dressed. I was a part of one of their
- 45:12Speaker 1: I don't know if that was a fantasy or if
- 45:13Speaker 1: it was real, but there was one where she climbed
- 45:16Speaker 1: up on top of me on a on one of
- 45:17Speaker 1: the table, on a surgical table. Yeah that was fantasy though,
- 45:20Speaker 1: that was a fantasy. Oh yeah, of course. Yeah. Do
- 45:23Speaker 1: you remember she had a nurse thing like a Red
- 45:28Speaker 1: Cross things and they had to in post they had
- 45:30Speaker 1: to change it to green because no, you don't use
- 45:34Speaker 1: the Red crosses. Oh that's funny. That's a little bit
- 45:39Speaker 1: of trivia. Right, you can't have sex on a surgical
- 45:41Speaker 1: table with the Red Cross album. We're not going to
- 45:44Speaker 1: approve that. But if you got the Green one, which
- 45:48Speaker 1: is the medical marijuana one, it's all yeah, it's all good. Now,
- 45:52Speaker 1: it's funny. The Green Cross in the UK just means
- 45:56Speaker 1: pharmacy or normal pharmacy. And now that you live in
- 46:00Speaker 1: we live in California for those of you don't have dispensaries.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Wherever you are, everywhere there's a medical dispensary, recreational or
- 46:08Speaker 1: or medical, it's the Green Cross. So it's funny. When
- 46:10Speaker 1: I first moved and spend some time in London. I
- 46:13Speaker 1: was like, Wow, they have a lot of dispensaries on
- 46:16Speaker 1: every corner. I laughed out loud at Alma right bringing Hey,
- 46:21Speaker 1: I hope let's make this quick. I got tickets to
- 46:23Speaker 1: Bringing a Noise, Bringing the Funking. I don't want to
- 46:24Speaker 1: miss the Noise Loma. She had a couple of good
- 46:33Speaker 1: lines in that episode. Yeah, she really does. She really
- 46:38Speaker 1: does nail it every time. Now, like you, you're absolutely
- 46:41Speaker 1: right about the cast of characters that came after the
- 46:46Speaker 1: Core seven. You know what I mean. It's like everyone
- 46:50Speaker 1: always seemed to nail their jokes, you know what I mean.
- 46:52Speaker 1: And and and it's it's a I don't know if
- 46:55Speaker 1: Bill had a thing where it's like, if you didn't
- 46:57Speaker 1: nail the jokes, she didn't come back. But that is
- 47:00Speaker 1: kind of the thing. If you're not funny, you're not
- 47:02Speaker 1: coming back. I would love to know the people that
- 47:04Speaker 1: he had. We don't want to we don't want to out. Oh,
- 47:07Speaker 1: I'm not going to put on this is conversation to
- 47:09Speaker 1: have with him, no one at another time. But I
- 47:14Speaker 1: would know. But I mean, you can know in your
- 47:15Speaker 1: head there were there were people that that could have
- 47:18Speaker 1: easily what happened with Neil is is the ultimate example.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Neil Neil was in the pilot and Bill was like,
- 47:23Speaker 1: I'm making this guy series regular, Whereas whereas there's people
- 47:26Speaker 1: who did one or two and he's like, all right,
- 47:28Speaker 1: well it was nice meeting you. Yeah, what about you
- 47:33Speaker 1: skipped something? And I wanted to talk to you about it?
- 47:35Speaker 1: When when Judy touches your belly and goes blink and
- 47:38Speaker 1: who she goes, who's your new friend? I didn't. I didn't.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I didn't want to that. Oh you wanted to skip that?
- 47:44Speaker 1: I didn't want to skip it. But you know, I
- 47:46Speaker 1: when I when I was watching the show, I was like,
- 47:48Speaker 1: and this is where my eating habits changed, you know
- 47:51Speaker 1: what I mean? Like, But but I have a question
- 47:53Speaker 1: because I think it's just a story point. Because when
- 47:55Speaker 1: they cut to you later running with Johnny C and
- 47:57Speaker 1: you're in the gym, you look fit as hell. So
- 48:00Speaker 1: this didn't come out of the writers being like, oh,
- 48:02Speaker 1: Donald's gained a few did it? Listen? Listen back then?
- 48:08Speaker 1: I was one hundred and seventy five pounds when we
- 48:10Speaker 1: started the show, right right, I got up to a
- 48:14Speaker 1: hundred and ninety pounds, and everybody I could feel the
- 48:19Speaker 1: you know, where my clothes didn't fit the same and
- 48:22Speaker 1: everything like that. Yeah, around season one, you know, you
- 48:27Speaker 1: get comfortable when you're working and stuff like that, and
- 48:29Speaker 1: I remember thinking, you know, wow, I guess I look
- 48:33Speaker 1: big on camera now. And you know, I remember dieting
- 48:37Speaker 1: and doing all of these things right, and at one point, I,
- 48:40Speaker 1: you know, I guess I gained some weight. But this
- 48:46Speaker 1: was this became an issue for me as time went on,
- 48:48Speaker 1: where I didn't think about weight up until Scrubbs, Like,
- 48:51Speaker 1: I didn't give a shit about how I looked or
- 48:54Speaker 1: how I was perceived. I didn't, you know, I just
- 48:55Speaker 1: I ate what I wanted to and you know, I
- 48:59Speaker 1: worked out a ship ton. But then all of a
- 49:01Speaker 1: sudden it became okay, no, you have to work to
- 49:03Speaker 1: maintain this weight for the show or it's gonna be
- 49:07Speaker 1: in script. And people, wait, So did anyone ever say
- 49:11Speaker 1: anything to you like you need to lose weight? No?
- 49:14Speaker 1: But I once heard, and I'm gonna call Sarah out
- 49:16Speaker 1: on this, but I once heard Sarah. You know, while
- 49:19Speaker 1: we were filming talking to a bunch of people like yo,
- 49:22Speaker 1: somebody hit me up on a chat line and was like, yo,
- 49:25Speaker 1: is Donald Fazon on a Krispy Kreme diet and I
- 49:28Speaker 1: was like yo, and I remember being like, yeah, I
- 49:32Speaker 1: am on a Krispy Kreme diet, but it gives a shit, dude.
- 49:35Speaker 1: It's funny because the story of Turk in the show
- 49:39Speaker 1: is that doctors get so busy they don't have time
- 49:41Speaker 1: to exercise, their their stress eating, and it's kind of
- 49:46Speaker 1: what happened to you as an actor on the show.
- 49:47Speaker 1: We had crazy hours. There's a giant craft service table
- 49:50Speaker 1: with donuts, and uh, you know, and I love First
- 49:53Speaker 1: of all, I love donuts. Let's let's keep it one hundred, like,
- 49:56Speaker 1: is that your favorite thing? For my birthday, my wife
- 49:59Speaker 1: bought me a donut machine. Dude. You think I'm fucking bullshitting.
- 50:02Speaker 1: She went on Amazon and got me a commercial grade
- 50:05Speaker 1: donut making machine. Dude. And I like the little just
- 50:10Speaker 1: like a Krispy Kreme and and I was like, you
- 50:13Speaker 1: got that shit and she was like yeah. I was like,
- 50:14Speaker 1: we got to look at the dimensions on how big
- 50:16Speaker 1: this thing is. This just like fifty six inches, Like
- 50:19Speaker 1: it's like a six foot whatever six feet is. It's
- 50:22Speaker 1: like a six foot long track and it makes donut.
- 50:26Speaker 1: It doesn't make like one donut at a time, it
- 50:28Speaker 1: makes like seven. It makes a dozen donuts at a
- 50:31Speaker 1: fucking time, dude, And I'm like, holy shit. Even CenTra,
- 50:34Speaker 1: I was like, baby, is there a way that we
- 50:36Speaker 1: can return this? And she was like yeah, but it
- 50:39Speaker 1: has to get here first. Now I know me. Once
- 50:41Speaker 1: it gets here, I'm gonna make donuts on nuting. Yet
- 50:46Speaker 1: it hasn't come yet. Oh my god. The way it
- 50:48Speaker 1: happened was because I'm going through Amazon. And you know
- 50:51Speaker 1: how once you once you buy something on Amazon, it
- 50:55Speaker 1: hits you with if you like this, if you since
- 50:58Speaker 1: you bought this, you know you might like this. And
- 51:01Speaker 1: I was like, hold up, why are all these donut
- 51:03Speaker 1: machines showing up? Well, that's not gonna help you, diet bro,
- 51:08Speaker 1: if you have a donut machine in your house. I've
- 51:10Speaker 1: come up with a I've come up with an idea
- 51:12Speaker 1: and what I want to do with this with said
- 51:14Speaker 1: donut machine, what I Am going to make Donnie's donuts? Okay,
- 51:19Speaker 1: and I'm gonna sell donuts to the masses. I'm gonna
- 51:23Speaker 1: I'll sell about you know, it makes like a dozen
- 51:26Speaker 1: donuts at a time, I'll sell I don't know, maybe
- 51:31Speaker 1: five dozen donuts a day, okay, out of the out
- 51:34Speaker 1: of your front door. Not out of the front door.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I'll do it on sets or something like that where
- 51:38Speaker 1: i'll you know where I'll you know, if you have
- 51:41Speaker 1: a you're not gonna have the charity. You're just gonna
- 51:43Speaker 1: pocket that money, right, this is your side, Like, yeah, man,
- 51:45Speaker 1: I gotta pay for that donut machine. That shit costs
- 51:47Speaker 1: a lot of money. I know my wife bought it
- 51:50Speaker 1: for me, but you know it comes out of my
- 51:52Speaker 1: motherfucking pocket. Now, buddy, I never realized until now. Is
- 51:55Speaker 1: like when you have a joint bank account with your
- 51:57Speaker 1: wife and and or your partner whatever, and they give
- 52:00Speaker 1: you like a really expensive present, it's part of you like, yeah,
- 52:04Speaker 1: thank you, but what the fuck? Yeah? I'm sure my
- 52:10Speaker 1: wife thinks that way too, Like how much the first
- 52:12Speaker 1: thing she says every time I buy something? How much
- 52:14Speaker 1: in the costs? Don't worry about it? Don't worry about it,
- 52:17Speaker 1: you know, don't you worry about it? I looked, I
- 52:19Speaker 1: got I had the opportunity to see how much the
- 52:21Speaker 1: donut machine costs, because I can't wait to see the
- 52:25Speaker 1: commercial doughnut machine in your house when this is all
- 52:27Speaker 1: said and done, I invite you all over, come over,
- 52:29Speaker 1: I'll make donut try all right, Well I didn't realize
- 52:31Speaker 1: it was a sore spot for you and uh so,
- 52:34Speaker 1: But anyway, it was written in the script that Turk
- 52:37Speaker 1: has gained some pounds. Yeah. Well it turns out that
- 52:40Speaker 1: Turk gets diabetes too because of his eating habits, and
- 52:44Speaker 1: you know, part of meating like yeah, like uh yeah.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Later on Turk gets diabetes. Literally, my diabetes, my diabetes. Um.
- 52:55Speaker 1: But I remember thinking, you know, I think your real
- 52:58Speaker 1: life would somehow wind it like I don't have diabetes,
- 53:00Speaker 1: but your real life would somehow wind its way up
- 53:02Speaker 1: into the script, you know what I mean. I remember
- 53:05Speaker 1: I started I was losing my hair at a very
- 53:07Speaker 1: young age, and Bill wrote into the script the reason
- 53:11Speaker 1: why Turk doesn't grow his hair out is because it's patchy.
- 53:15Speaker 1: And I remember being like, oh, hold on, now, I
- 53:20Speaker 1: just not so much in the front, not so much
- 53:26Speaker 1: on the front, but like on the sides. He just
- 53:28Speaker 1: has a big, a big receding hairline. But it looks
- 53:30Speaker 1: good anyway. I like the way it looks. But he
- 53:33Speaker 1: just made me think you could do a mohawk, which
- 53:35Speaker 1: would be cool. It would be like really thin in
- 53:38Speaker 1: the front and then it would get really thick in
- 53:39Speaker 1: the back though, which is not really the dopest mohawk
- 53:42Speaker 1: on the pot, but anyway, I remember being I remember
- 53:46Speaker 1: him doing that and being like, wait, hold on a second,
- 53:48Speaker 1: Bill thinks I can't grow hair, and I not legit.
- 53:51Speaker 1: So there's like a there's like six episodes where Turk
- 53:54Speaker 1: has a full head of hair just because I was like,
- 53:57Speaker 1: there's no way I'm gonna let anybody think that I
- 54:00Speaker 1: can't grow Now, like, it became personal at some points,
- 54:02Speaker 1: and this was one of those moments with the donut
- 54:04Speaker 1: where it was like, when I was watching, I was
- 54:06Speaker 1: like in this that I think this is where it
- 54:08Speaker 1: all went down where I started to realize, oh, I
- 54:12Speaker 1: have to be in a certain shape for things. I
- 54:14Speaker 1: have to look a certain way because before that I
- 54:16Speaker 1: didn't care about it and I was still working right. Well,
- 54:19Speaker 1: don't you feel that way now though? Still when you
- 54:21Speaker 1: when you get jobs that like when you did when
- 54:23Speaker 1: you run Emergings for a year, or did you feel
- 54:25Speaker 1: like that you wanted to be in good shape for
- 54:27Speaker 1: the camera. No, I just wanted to look fresh in
- 54:31Speaker 1: face for camera, Like these are things that I've like
- 54:33Speaker 1: I've learned that my drinking habits and my marijuana habits
- 54:37Speaker 1: have made it so that, you know, if I don't
- 54:40Speaker 1: take time off from it, you can see it in
- 54:43Speaker 1: my face, you know what I mean. I look at
- 54:44Speaker 1: pictures at us when we were kids, and we would
- 54:47Speaker 1: and when we would go to the parties and everything
- 54:48Speaker 1: like that, and we drink at the parties, and you
- 54:51Speaker 1: could literally see in our faces and pictures. Yeah, those
- 54:53Speaker 1: guys are fucking wasted. Yeah. And as I've gotten older,
- 54:57Speaker 1: that's lasted much longer then it. You know what I mean.
- 55:02Speaker 1: If I drink on Tuesday, you know, I gotta wait
- 55:05Speaker 1: until like Friday, until it's all gone out of my
- 55:09Speaker 1: out of my face, or I have, you know, real
- 55:11Speaker 1: big bags under my eyes. And same thing with smoking.
- 55:13Speaker 1: So when I went and did emergence, I cut out
- 55:15Speaker 1: all booze and alcohol for for for a long period
- 55:19Speaker 1: of time. I mean booze and marijuana for a long
- 55:22Speaker 1: period of time. And what no one I did, No
- 55:27Speaker 1: one didn't, No, no one watched it. It didn't emerge,
- 55:32Speaker 1: it did. It didn't emerge the way the way I
- 55:34Speaker 1: wanted to. You know, Neil, both Donald and I as
- 55:37Speaker 1: you know, because you helped me with some press, which
- 55:39Speaker 1: I really appreciate. As you know, Donald and I both
- 55:42Speaker 1: had ABC shows, um and unlike The Middle, they both
- 55:45Speaker 1: completely bombed. Yeah, they didn't make it. Was The Middle
- 55:49Speaker 1: was an ABC show? Right? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, it was it.
- 55:52Speaker 1: ABC Studios also Wonner Brothers Wanner Brothers for ABC. Wow. Yeah,
- 55:58Speaker 1: we were ABC for NBCOR originally an NBC was like, no,
- 56:01Speaker 1: we're gonna pass on it, and ABC was like, oh,
- 56:03Speaker 1: well we'll pick it up and we went a full season.
- 56:07Speaker 1: And uh, are you still sad about it? How are
- 56:11Speaker 1: you feeling about it? I'm fine. I you know, how long?
- 56:14Speaker 1: How long? Like how long do you pout about something
- 56:16Speaker 1: like that? Well, like I have bad news. I think
- 56:18Speaker 1: I pouted for like a few days and then I'm like,
- 56:20Speaker 1: all right it. Yeah, I didn't pout that long about
- 56:23Speaker 1: this one. I loved the show, and I loved the
- 56:25Speaker 1: cast members, and I loved working with everyone. But it
- 56:29Speaker 1: was in Jersey and not that I have something not
- 56:32Speaker 1: that I have something wrong with Jersey, but coming out
- 56:34Speaker 1: of a pandemic and going back to work in New
- 56:37Speaker 1: Jersey and on behalf of the Garden State, I think
- 56:41Speaker 1: the point is that you didn't want to be separated
- 56:42Speaker 1: from your family. It wasn't that like let me if you,
- 56:45Speaker 1: if you let me finish coming out of a pandemic
- 56:48Speaker 1: and going back to Jersey, which I had a great
- 56:51Speaker 1: time in Jersey and I loved Jersey and leaving my
- 56:55Speaker 1: kids back in Los Angeles again, it would fuck them up,
- 56:59Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I understand that I wouldn't.
- 57:05Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to uh do a show in another state.
- 57:11Speaker 1: Maybe the time will come, but I think I agree Neal.
- 57:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I would do a film obviously anywhere, but
- 57:20Speaker 1: I wouldn't sign on. I don't think, and I mean,
- 57:23Speaker 1: mark my words. I'm sure I'll there'll be an occasion
- 57:25Speaker 1: where I might change my mind, but right now I
- 57:28Speaker 1: think to commit long term to something, it would be
- 57:31Speaker 1: New York or LA where where I'm based and I
- 57:34Speaker 1: have you know, and I'm unlike Donald, I don't have
- 57:37Speaker 1: kids yet. Um, but I'm still in a place where
- 57:39Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want to go move to to
- 57:42Speaker 1: Stad where I always choose Dood as my random city.
- 57:49Speaker 1: It's it's I believe it's a ski town in Switzerland.
- 57:52Speaker 1: It's straight out of coming trading places where Dan Ackroyd's
- 57:57Speaker 1: at the pawn shop trying to sell the watch, and
- 58:00Speaker 1: the dude's like fifty bucks. He's like fifty bucks. No,
- 58:02Speaker 1: this isn't such as such. It tells time in New York, London, La,
- 58:06Speaker 1: and Stad. I think it's like the aspin of the Alps.
- 58:11Speaker 1: It's like a fancy Skei town. Which but by the way,
- 58:13Speaker 1: it was a horrible example for my story because I
- 58:16Speaker 1: should have picked a place no one wants to live.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Maybe I would like to live in the aspen of
- 58:19Speaker 1: the Alps. We're gonna tear a quick break and then Neil,
- 58:22Speaker 1: we take a guest with the show. Who's gonna have
- 58:23Speaker 1: an awesome question for one of us? I'll bet rewatch.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I like that theme. By the way, it's very churchy. Yeah, yes, yes,
- 58:43Speaker 1: we speaking of churchy. Dude. Do you remember the church
- 58:46Speaker 1: episode where we did it in the hospital cafeteria and
- 58:49Speaker 1: you had the freaking uh straw hat? What was it?
- 58:52Speaker 1: What kind of hat is that where it's like a
- 58:53Speaker 1: straw hat? Really? Yeah? I think you had, Neil. I
- 59:01Speaker 1: think you had a tambourine. As I recall that could
- 59:03Speaker 1: be God Samuel centers in the house. That's Samuel Center, Joel,
- 59:10Speaker 1: do you have any special introduction you want to make
- 59:12Speaker 1: up Samuel Center or should we just start talking to
- 59:14Speaker 1: Samuel Center? Just get right on into it. Hi, Hello, Samuel. Whoa, Oh,
- 59:19Speaker 1: beautiful people. This is crazy, it's crazy. You are a professional, dude.
- 59:24Speaker 1: You came with the mic popping thing. Donald needs one
- 59:27Speaker 1: of those because he spits everywhere. So I have a
- 59:29Speaker 1: spit problem. Yeah, Dan, can you get Samuel has for
- 59:32Speaker 1: those of you listening, has one of those very fancy
- 59:35Speaker 1: circle things you put in front of a mic and
- 59:37Speaker 1: uh and Donald needs one of those dances. I have one.
- 59:39Speaker 1: I have one. No, well, we need it, We need
- 59:41Speaker 1: it now. It's probably called the spit guard or yes,
- 59:44Speaker 1: spit spit shield. You know. When I first saw the
- 59:46Speaker 1: spit guard was in the We Are the World's music video,
- 59:51Speaker 1: and that's where I also sold that you were supposed
- 59:52Speaker 1: to hold your headphones like this over one year so
- 59:55Speaker 1: you can hear, yeah, to hear the harmonies when you're
- 59:58Speaker 1: down and out and see it all if you care.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: If you think you look better without headphones on your head,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I think that's how you hold the headphones, right, Yeah, Mike,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Mike didn't want to mess up the freaking right, Neil.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: All the people that knew they were shooting a video
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: were like, you know what, But if you just believe
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: that we should do a Donald, we should do an
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: episode of this where we recreate the video and we
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: each take turns playing different characters in the song. Yeah, sure, man,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I fucking did that as a kid. I used to
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: do that as a kid. I could do it as
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: an adult. I used to love that. I would watch
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: that over and over and over again. Anyway, Sorry, Samuel,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: where are you called? Samuel? Sent where that's Oprah? Where
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: are you calling from? Samuel? I'm calling from a small
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: town called Cloku in Minnesota. Cloqu minda, we got it
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: the far North. Welcome. You have Neil Flynn with us today.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And that's Donald doing his best Oprah? And uh And
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: do you have a question for us anything? Ask us anything?
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Ask you anything? What happens when we die? Oh? Wow? Wow? No,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just kidding. Don't you coming on? Samuel? Everybody?
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Can you play the music that drives it off? No?
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Go ahead, you got a real question? Go ahead, I
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: do I have a real question for you. First of all,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: thank you for all of the years of entertainment. This
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: is such a thrill to meet you guys. Uh No,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: it's incredible, Thank you. So in terms of entertainment, you
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: guys have been there for You've been in the business
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: for so long and just seeing how things change, and
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: it feels like people's attention spans are getting shorter and shorter.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: And uh, mister Flynn h such an improv comedy genius.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: And Zach you're a writer, and mister Fazon, you just
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: kind of embody what cool is to me. And you've
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: been doing I mean since Clueless. Man. My sister was
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: big into Clueless, And I can't tell you how much
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: I look up to you and have tried to emulate
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: some of the style that you have accepted and received
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: except but as things have changed and people's attention spans
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: have gotten shorter, how do you feel yourselves adapting as entertainers,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: writers and improv comedy people. Do you feel like you've
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: had to shift the way you approach things or do
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: you feel like you've kept it the same to just
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: stay true to your art or how does that feel
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: on your end? That's a good question. You know, they
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: just came out with this service that as I understand
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: it isn't isn't doing as well as anyone hoped. Called Quibbi,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: which is basically like ten minute episodes you can watch
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: on your phone, which I would have thought would would
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: do well because people are commuting and they're sitting in
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: a doctor's office, and for all I know it will
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: it will do well one day, but that I was
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: thinking of of that service when you when you said that,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: the biggest thing I notice is that whenever I do anything,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: if it's a TV show, if it's a film, if
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: it's a music video, if it's a documentary, everyone writes
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: me on Instagram when second be on Netflix. It's as
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: though it's like the only thing most people watch anymore.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: So that's always on my mind. When I'm going out
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: and I'm pitching a new idea, I'm always kind of like, wow,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: I I you know, Netflix has so much content, But
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: in my mind, I'm thinking, like, I kind of want
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: this to be on Netflix because that's what everybody seems
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: to watch these days. Whenever you know, I'll I like.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: And when we were talking briefly about the ABC show
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I did um Alex Sinca. It didn't didn't last or
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: work that well, but I remember when I was promoting it.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I was just doing anything I could to promote it, anything, anything, anything,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: And then everyone was like, sounds great, Zach, when's it
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: on Netflix? And I'm like, well, it's not. It's it's
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: on ABC. It's it's not, it's not gonna be on Netflix.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: But I don't know. That's what I just kept thinking
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: about that. What about you guys. I feel like it's well,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: you know, I'm while we're in this downtime, I'm trying
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: to you know, I got a couple of other voices,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: trying to develop something, you know, to do when when
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: we can start to work again. Yeah, And it's really
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I've never done that before. I've never helped to create
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: a show. But I feel like to start a new
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: show now, I don't think at tension spans are anyhow
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: or necessarily. People are watching stuff. It's just not the
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: same stuff they used to watch. And there's more TV
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: than there ever was, And I feel like, if you're
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: going to start something from the ground up, you can't
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: just do family, living room multi cam. You know, it
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: feels like Guy's gone. There has to be something a
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: hook to the show. Yeah, and whether it's you know,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: I don't know what really shows are doing a period
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: piece or his you know, real people like I don't know,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: the Kennedy's or something, or the Queens and Kings or
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: something fantastical or outer space or it just feels like
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: you can't do that. The time has passed. Do the
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Johnson family. Although although, Neil, you just gave me a
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: genius idea to do a traditional like living room sitcom,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: but it's kings and queens in a castle. I would
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: do it, except they live on like the set of
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: the Cosby show, the Kings and Queens, but they just
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: have a cow. But they're they're royals and they've been
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: transported from a from another era, but and they don't
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: really know why they're there. But they live in this
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: this you know, suburban house that could work, or that
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: could have worked in nineteen eighty six. You know, come on, man,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: if ALF could work, I was just gonna say ALF. Yeah.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: We talked about ALF extensively um in one of these episodes,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: because I remember as a kid, a child, seeing a
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: commercial for ALF and being like that's so stupid, No
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: one's gonna watch that, and then cut to me like
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: riveted every week like a launching. ALF call that being
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: kind of funny. I think it was kind of a
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: funny show. No, it was genius and Max Wright, who
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: is hilarious, played the father What are you doing? Alf?
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: And he notoriously hated being on a puppet show. He
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: hated every second of it. He hated the puppet. Fuck
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: that I would have woke off this set. Fuck you, Alf, trailer,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Fuck you. This is the true story. Alf the puppet
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: was actually my sleep paralysis demon from like age three
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: to ten. WHOA, WHOA, I didn't see sleep paralysis demon?
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: What's it about? I have all their music? Is? What
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: is a sleep paralysis demon? For those of us who
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: don't know? All right, So, sleep paralysis is like this
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: condition where you're you know, dead as sleep and you
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: and if I'm sure you know, if you don't know,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: there's chemicals in your body that released to paralyze you
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: while you're sleeping so that you don't get up and
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: run while you're dreaming. Right, Um, there's things there's a
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: phenomenon that can happen where you achieve consciousness, but you're
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: still paralyzed by those things that are keeping you sleeping.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: And h I happen to get that and have since
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I was a really little kid. And typically, for whatever reason,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: whatever you want to say about the human coition or whatever,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: when people are stuck at this, they go to a
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: very dark space and usually they see something really uh
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: ugly or terrifying. And this, I mean, it could be anything.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: It can be a literal. So so people call them
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: their sleep paralysis demons. And Alf was literally mine. There
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: was a commercial on TV where Alf pressed his face
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: against the glass. It was probably from like the premiere episode.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: And when I was eight years old, I think specifically,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: anytime I would get in the sleep paralysis state, there
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: would be Alf at the edge of my oh yeah,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: yeahs frightening thing and was out saying anything new you
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: or was he was just he was just him up
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: against the glass at the foot of your bed. Yeah,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: it was just him against the glass. I don't know, man,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Do you still have a sleep paralysis a sleep paralysis demon? Now? Yeah?
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: And is it still out? Is it still out? No? Now,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: it's just uh now, it's just just um. Yeah. I
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: was gonna say something, but I won't. No. Now it's
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: it's actually a guy in a suit. Okay, wow, wow,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: that's scary. Well, that's very scary. I I that's traumatic.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: You know, Alf. I didn't haven't that much problems with
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: alf um. We brought it up, we've run it up
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: on the show before. I didn't know. I don't know
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: if this was in your sleep arolysis nightmare. But Alf
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: has a tail um. We learned, Neil because I had
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: the stuffed animal for Alf and I was a child,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: and what I would do is I would take the
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: alf tail and I would tuck it through his legs
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: and close his legs to give him a giant erect
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: alf penis. Mister Braff, you've changed my life in many ways,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: and now I want to thank you because now my
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: sleep prolysis Alf is going to have a big old
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: tail penis. Thank you for that now, Sam, I'm gonna
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: feel so bad if it goes back from man and
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: suit to Alf with an alpha erection. I apologize. But
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: maybe you'll be able to laugh at him, just point
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: and laugh at him. Maybe he'll he'll dissipate. I'm not
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: sure I understood the question. I thought you were asking,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: like how to how he was saying now that in
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: his opinion h and an opinion of others, things are
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: getting shorter and shorter for short attention spans. Do you
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: think there's any way that you have adapted the way
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: you perform or evolved things that you're doing for for
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: a shorter attention span, whether it's anything you do, maybe
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: in your animated videos you you know, I noticed something
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna answer for Donald and Donald you
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: pipe in. You used to post some of your stop
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: motion animation longer clips. Now you're posting very short clips.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Do you think that's for human attention span? Absolutely? Because
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: at one point I realized that, thank you very much, Zach.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: At one point I realized people were not paying attention
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: past a minute, you know what I mean? Fuck that,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: not paying attention past thirty seconds. And so now when
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I do when I post animation clips, they're like four
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: seconds or five seconds, because you know, if anything, they'll
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: watch it a couple of times, three or four times
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: before they move on to the next thing to make
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: sure they're uh to just to pick up visually what
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: it was that they saw, you know what I mean.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: So like with animation, if it doesn't look right, people
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: don't necessarily pay attention to it. And also I have
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: a side question if you're doing animation, Is it better
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: for you to focus on a short do a short
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: little segment really really, really well, rather than do work
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: on a full minute that has mistakes in it. Yeah,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: it's it's better to do it. In my opinion. If
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: you can do a full minute of perfect animation, you're great.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: But no movie is like that either though, you know
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: what I mean. There are very few movies that have
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: scenes that are a one or for one minute, you
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: know what I mean. And if they do do that,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: it's a special shot. And so with animation you try
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: to shoot it just like you would shoot any other
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: project that you put on film, whether it be movie
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: or television. You want to make it quick and keep
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: the cuts coming so that everybody. The faster the pace,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: the better it is with animation. The slower the slower
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: the pace of the story, the easy it is for
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: people to tune out. Sometimes I send you um clips
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: of animation I think is cool, and you don't even reply,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and it hurts my feelings. I'm sorry because I've seen
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: them already, I know. But you could say yes, I've
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: seen this. I could say yes, I've seen this, thank you.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: It's like when my mom sends me my mom sent
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: me a picture of like a bird, and you know, okay,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: but I can I still take the time to be
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: like pretty bird mom. You know you could, you might,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: you know, I might say, hey, exact cool animation, saw
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: this one. You know what, from here on out, because
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: I now know that you are very sensitive when it
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: I am sensitive, I will from here on out I
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: will respond with, oh man, I've seen that already. But
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: thank you. All right, Samuel, give another question. All I
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: got all kinds of questions, but we'll keep it. We'll
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: keep it like uh, just knowing that mister Flint is there,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: which is so cool. I just have to say, I
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: seriously thank you. One of the funniest people that has
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: ever existed. Especially I told him that too, I saym
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: I agree, It's just totally true. I'm just you know,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: just freeballing here. Uh let's just say that, yeah, free
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: ball always always. You don't have to tell us what
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: you're under. Situation is sam I said the wrong word
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: on This is why Alph won't leave the foot of
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: your bed. He wants to see those balls. God, oh, Samuel,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: all right, Samuel, go ahead, free ball away um Janitor
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: spinoff of Scrubs. Let's just say that they brought it back.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: Let's just say they got mister Braff and mister fayzon
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Uh signed on his co stars in at least the
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: pilot episode. Where would you want to explore the Janitor's
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: character now? And what would you want the episode so
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: to revolve around? What kind of stuff would you like
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: to be in? It? Outer space? That's where it said,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: we're marooned in outer space. So it's sort of like
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: a Gilligan's Island type thing. On an island on a planet? Ship?
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Are we on a ship? Kneel on? Are on a planet? Uh?
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: A ship? And then then like towards the end of
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: the first season, it lands sort of like sort of
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: like Josie and the Pussycats, the Janitor and the and
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: the doctors. Yes, it's very much like Josie and the Pussycats.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: And yeah, I was hoping you wouldn't notice that I
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: stole up. So the janitor is also in a band. Yeah,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: we're all musicians. Yeah, Neil, you you joke, but I
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: would watch this show. I mean, Neuron doesn't necessarily steal
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: the character from Scrubs, but you could be your character
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: is a janitor on a on a spaceship, which is
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: a character. You never see who's cleaning? Who's cleaning these spaceships? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: that's funny. Yes, Donald, you watch so much sci fi?
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Have you ever seen anyone cleaning up inside any of
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: those ships? No? Never, not even the Millennium Falcon, which
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: is the dirtiest spaceship in the galaxy. No one does
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: any maintenance. Never ever. Maybe Jordi did a little maintenance. Well,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: but Johnny was like he was an engineer though. Man,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: he was like, oh that's right. I knew he was working.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Never like just like like your character would often be,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: you know, be doing something. We joke about Neil. We
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: sometimes we're like, you know what, the janitor was actually
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: a good janitor for he was He really worked a lot.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: He was always doing shit and uh always were actually working.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: I would have said the opposite that was oftentimes I
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: would say, should I be doing something? I'm constantly just
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: walking around a corner with nothing in my hands. You know,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: what are you doing? Wasn't there a time when when
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: when someone a director said to mop in the admissions
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: and you're like, there's a carpet, that's funny. I don't
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: remember that. Anyway. I'm very interested, Neil in developing this.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: You're a janitor on a spaceship series. Okay, yeah, because
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: if it's a it's about three guys that they're marooned,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I would in space. Okay, what did they do beforehand?
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: Where they scientists or they were on a mission? Donald
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: and I were, well, two guys were on a mission
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: and one guy was cleaning the ship for them. No, no, no, no, Donald,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Donald put the Donald and I are on a mission.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: And part of this mission. Because there's been a lot
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: of complaints about cleanliness and spaceships, they sent along a
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: member of the janitorial stuff to keep the ship clean
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: while they're on their mission. Right, and then once it,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: once it crashes or whatever, the status you know, the
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: totem pole is scrambled. Yes, right, yeah, Now, scientists, you know,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: are scared shitless and the janitor is like, I could
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: handle this, follow my lead. Yeah, the janitor janitor becomes
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: the captain. Yes, and maybe maybe Donald and I are
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: injured so we can't really do much, but the janitor
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: takes over. Well, we don't have to be injured. We
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: just have to be like kind of like not really
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: good with other things other than piloting in science. No
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: survival skills whatsoever, whatsoever, that's good Neil. So Neil's character
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: is like, not only was he working for a custodian staff,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: but he was an amazing survivalist and diald And I
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: don't know anything about how to survival on this random planet.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Our our journey could have been just we were supposed
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: to go to the International Space Station, right, and that's it.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: And somehow we got knocked off course by some crazy
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: ass Gama wave or some type of micro wave or
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: something like that, and it sends us into a wormhole
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: and we wind up in this fucking galaxy where we
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: don't know shit about anything, right, but and don't know
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: how to survive other than if we were to be,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: you know, on an International space station. And Neil Flynn Janitor, Hey,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: you know what I just thought of something. We didn't
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: start trek. They weren't different planets and stuff, right, Yes,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: they never wore helmets, pursuits. They had oxygen in those belts.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: All those planets had oxygen. They were all supporting planets, right.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Apparently decision early on. Well, I imagine, like you said,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: with the headphones not looking good. I'm sure that what's
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: his name, Captain Kirk was like, you're not putting a
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: helmet on? This was like, no way, you see this?
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: You see this? No way, Shatner. Yeah, so that's the idea. Joel,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: will you produce? Joel will produce? Um. Thank you, We're
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: off to the races. Samuel, Samuel for calling in, my friend. Oh,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: it's such a pleasure to meet everybody. Thank you very much.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Thank you, You're awesome, and good luck. And listen, don't
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: let those monsters keep you in bed. Be safe. Now.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna show them my balls and laugh at him.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: That's all right, And that's a lesson for everybody out there.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: If you're ever afraid, show them your balls and just
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: laugh at them. Well, I'll see you in jail. Maybe not.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: Donald's like, well never mind ever, right ever, be healthy man,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: take care. Oh my god, I have so many questions
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: back to space, Janitor. I love it. Neil's like furiously
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: taking notes about it. Yes, I am. I wonder if
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: part of it should be a game show, or maybe
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: the whole thing a game show. Just for some reason,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: we're sticking with this, these these elements that are a
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Janitor lost in space. Okay, Carter family, what is the
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: capital of Shod for the star Shod? Yeah, and believe
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: it or not, Neil's Shod starts with a G. There's
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: a silent G. Yeah, you know what joelity check is
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: g st a a D If I'm not mistaken, God ahead.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: That reminds me of Jibooty. I think it's pronounced its
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: episodes with an N. I think a D. Jibooty starts
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: with a D. You're you're right, You're right? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: But I remember when we used to do the show.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Used to do crossword puzzles, did I yeah, I'm going
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: through phases. Yeah, the New York Times probably, yeah, and
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: you would do I remember I never I suck at spelling,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: and I also suck at crossword puzzles. But um, would
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: you ever get to would you ever get to the
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: Sunday one? Have you ever? You know what I mean?
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Like I hear the Sunday ones are the real hard ones.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: Monday it gets easy and then yeah that it goes
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: it gets more difficult. And he could finish the Sunday
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: is what you're asking. I'm asking, I'm asking how deep
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: into the week would you get, because I know there
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: were times where you would. You know, I remember asking
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: you one. You'd be like, oh, this is from like
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. M oh really, well that's
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: you know, if you don't, it depends on how hard
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: your work. Sometimes you just pick it up for ten
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: minutes and go on about your day. But I haven't
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: done one in a long time. But um yes, I
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: used to completely most of the time the same day,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: within an hour or two. I was always jealous of
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: people that could. I was. I think, at least what
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I know to be true, is it actually said Sunday
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: is the hardest day. Sunday's a big puzzle. Sunday's like
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: the supersized puzzle, not necessarily harder, so it builds the Saturday,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: and then Sunday's a bigger one, and Monday's the easiest.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: I feel like I have maybe done a Monday. I've
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: never I remember somebody saying that to me and being like, oh, okay,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: let me get the one on Monday. I just don't know.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Then I realized you had to. You had well, you
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: had to read the paper too. That was I didn't
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: know a lot of trivia. I mean, I could do
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: it if it was like, you know, no, you had
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the three letters star of a sitcom alien puppet. It
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: was a nice, nice callback. Thank you, thank you. It
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: means a lot to me. We barely talked about the episode,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: but we should talk about the Saint Elsewhere, a cast
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: that was visiting in this. Did you guys, either one
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: of you watch Saint Elsewhere back in the day? I
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: did so in Denzel. Yeah, was it Denzel's first role.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I don't know if it was his first role, but
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: I know he was on Saint Elsewhere, him and Howie Mandel. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: that's right. What's the theme song? Like da da da
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: da da da dad that something like that. Yeah, that
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: sounds very familiar. I visited the set once my parents
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: watched it. I believe it was Bruce Paltrow, um, Gwyneth
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Paltrow's father, who was a very big showrunner then, who
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: produced it with others, And um, my dad knew someone
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: we were visiting La and my dad knew someone. We
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: got onto the set. It was like the first like
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: real big TV set. Interestingly, I'm thinking about this out loud.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: The first real set I ever visited was was a
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: hospital set which was Saint Elsewhere. Um, and I think
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: it was beyond my It was too old for me
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: as a child. Um, but I remember my parents really
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: loving it. Joel just told me that Denzel made his
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: feature film debut in the comedy A Carbon Copy and um,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: and then he was if that was eighty one, and
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: then he was cast in the So it's the second
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: part probably um. Um, and he's on he was on St.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Else Where eighty two to eighty eight. That'd be cool
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: to we'll go back and watch a young Denzel on
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: that show. Well he's been. The crazy thing is he's
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: barely on the show, like he was one of the Yeah,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: you know, they didn't use him a lot on the show, uh,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: and which was which turned out to be great for
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: him because he would be able to go and do
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: movies instead of you know what I mean. They were like,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: well you're not on the show this week, and he'd
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: be like, oh, okay, well there's this dude doing this project.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: You know I'm gonna sign on and do it then.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: So like I remember Cry Freedom coming out, Remember that movie,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Him and Us an amazing movie.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: If you haven't seen it, Cry Freedom, Cry Freedom, Him
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: and uh, fish call wander no Fish. It was Kevin Klein. Yeah,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: and so I remember they did him. I remember that
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: came out and I remember being like, holy cow, the
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: dude from and this is where my parents were like
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: informing me, No, this guy is an amazing actor. He's done.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: He did theater in New York. You know what I mean,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: He's now blowing up as an actor. You should really
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: check out, if you because you know, I wanted to
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: be an actor at an early age. They were like
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Denzel Washington and they showed me Cry Freedom and I
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: remember being like, oh my god, this is the most
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: amazing movie ever. Yeah, that was incredible and uh and
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: I was very young when that came out. I don't know.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: And then you know, from that Mississippi, Missala and you know,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: The Mighty Quinn and a bunch of other movies. But yeah,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: then Glory eventually, of course, Glory. Glory was the one
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: of the first times as a child that I that
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: I knew who he was. And I just never seen
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: a performance better than that performance in Glory. By the
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: time Glory came out, I was well versed in Denzel Washington,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: William go ahead. I was just gonna say that for me.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: William Daniels is the voice of Kit. Yeah. And when
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: when William Daniels started speaking in this episode, I had forgotten.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: I went, oh my god, it's kid. Yeah, will he
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: never was the voice. Oh yeah, you never watched night Rider?
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: Well he's a he's a little bit older than us.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: So Donald and I were write in the pocket for
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: for a Team and night Rider And did you ever
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: watch a Team? No? Uh? Well, you know, I went
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: to Universal I was a kid. We went to Universal
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Studios the tour and they had a night Rider car
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: and you could get in it and the car would
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: talk to you, and it was amazing. In hindsight as
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: an adult they obviously had a hidden camera and a
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: guy somewhere, but as a child that was like, holy shit,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: it's kid. And I just remember thinking he was the coolest.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: And he would, you know, he would say things to
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: try and show off that he could see. You would
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: be like, I like you, I like your blue shirt
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: and uh and I'd be like, oh my god, kid.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: But they didn't have it wasn't It wasn't so William
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: Daniels sitting in some room somewhere. Probably No, I don't
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: think they paid his rate. Did he go on to
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: do Boy Meets World after all of that? After Night
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Rider and everything? Wasn't he like the next door neighbor
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: William Daniels, Yeah, yes, but I don't know about Boy
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Meets World, but certainly it would have been after Sane elsewhere?
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: Wasn't he I think I'm mixing him up with somebody else.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: But wasn't he in the graduate? Oh? I don't know.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I don't know. That's a good question, Joel. He might
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: have been checking face. Might have been Dustin Hoffman's dad,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: the one who says plastics? Is he the one who
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: says plastics? No, but that's in their yard, that's right.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: That's a neighbor, right, or a friend? Yeah? I can
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: picture him saying Benjamin. And if it's not him, it's
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: an actor that Joel's checking reminds her of each other?
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: And then Ed Begley, Ed Begley and um and also
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: Stephen First, who was famously an Animal House. Yeah. Have
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: you seen him house? Donald? I have seen it. Yes,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: I have seen Animal House. I saw Animal House the
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: night before I left for college. What's college? What's college like? Animal? Not? Well,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: you know, it wasn't quite the same. But I did
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: join a fraternity, probably influenced by that somewhat. It seemed
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: like they were having fun. Yeah, did you toga? I
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: don't think we ever did a toga thing. That would
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: be a little too on the nose, dude. What's up
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: with the zombie movie? All of a sudden, in the
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: middle of this episode, out of nowhere, it turned into
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: a zombie movie. I know it was Mark Buckland directing.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: I remember, and I remember it was kind of like
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a wide angle lens and trying to do all sort
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: of a zombie film. I thought that was weird too.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Did you notice that? Sorry, I'm going I'm jumping around,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: but at seven h three, I don't know if you
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: noticed this, but the score all of a sudden has
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: like record DJ scratching in it. Did you notice that?
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: I didn't notice there's like a score queue, like, all
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: of a sudden, it's like tweet no fun, princip bel Air. Wait,
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: so Joel is saying that Joel, are you saying that
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: he was in the graduate then he was? Indeed, sorry,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: yes he was in the graduate Neil, You're right, okay,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: all right, there you go, Dans. So in this episode,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: you know JD's all word that he UH has gotten
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: sick from UH. And I remember when I was a kid,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I just felt invincible, you know what I mean. And
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: you know, even with even with things that I shouldn't
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: have been, even with things that I shouldn't have been doing,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: where I should have been using protection, I felt like invincible,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: Like you know, motorcycles, whatever whatever it was, where I
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: should have, you know, wore a helmet. I didn't, you
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: know what I mean. And because of that, I got
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: a lot of kids. But the thing is, um, are
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: you do that way? You are using a cryptic analogy
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: because your daughter is on your lap? Yes, I see,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: I followed it. Now, Yeah you didn't. You didn't wear
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: a helmet when you were on your motorcycle. Absolutely right.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: But the fear of disease or hurting myself in any
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: way never came across my mind. You didn't think about
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: things like that. Now I have nothing but fear when
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: it comes to that stuff, you know what I mean.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: And it's it's a it's I noticed that I've because
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: of the situation that we're in, and you know, because
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: of isolation and quarantine and everything like that, I treat
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: people a lot differently because of that, And Ted the
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: lawyer does that to j D at one point where
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: he's like he's trying to play it off where he is,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: you know, things will be fine, and then he's like, hey,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: don't you want your pin back? JD's like, don't you
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: want your pinback? And the little and Ted's like, you know,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: keep it yeah, And that's kind of how I am now,
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like when when the we
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: get groceries delivered, now they knock on the door, or
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I'll wait a minute before I go to the door
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: to just to make sure that the air around the
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: door isn't you know, Like if we were in a
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: room right now and Neil you would have coughed like that,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: I'd been like you, okay, man, I know I was
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: coughing last night and I was like, oh my god,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: my girlfriend must totally think I'm sick. I don't know
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: if you guys are conscious of that. You're like, now
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: you cough in public and you're like, no, no, I'm fine, No, no, no, no,
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm just in my throat and
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: and that's you know, this episode. You know, everybody needs,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: first of all, everybody needs to first of all, chill out,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I know that this is
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: a very dangerous and scary time for us and everything
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: like that, but you're you're always jumping to the worst
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: case scenario, you know what I mean. You you have
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: a you have a you know, a feeling in your foot,
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: you jump online and the next thing you know, you've
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: got gerd. You know, you're telling everybody or you've got
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: I've got I've got a gout, you know what I mean,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: I've got on your toes. You're fucked, Yeah, you're fucked right,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: But you know what I mean. It's I don't know
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: if everyone's like that. Down You and I might be
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: a neurotic and looking everything up and thinking we've got
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: something bad, whereas other people might be like, you know,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: I'm fine. I don't know that many people that are
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: that think that way, you know what I mean. I
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: think there's a fear. We talked about this earlier. There's
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: a fear of going to the hospital and finding out
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: that something's wrong. So I think a lot of people
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: when something does come up, they're like, ah, you know what,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I'm not going to find out about it. If it's
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: really bad. It'll kick my ass later on and then
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I'll have to go to the hospital and they'll fix
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: it then. But you know, for Jay, for me personally nowadays,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: this what this episode did for me when watching it
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: was like and made me realize, I have a real
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: phobia when it comes to germs now, and I have
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: a real phobia when it comes to other people's germs now,
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: and it has a lot to do with what we're
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: going through. But I didn't have that shit when I
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: was a kid. I wasn't afraid of things like this,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: you know what I mean. There were people that got
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: stuck with me when we were doing the show. There
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: were a couple of people that accidentally got stuck with
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: needles fucking around with the props, you know what I mean,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: thinking oh this is fake. That would have freaked me
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: out here. I would have lost my ship. Nowadays, I'd
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: be like, I'm dying. I know I'm dead. Sarah was
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: the only person that I knew. Sarah Schalk was the
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: only person that I knew that was like that was
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: like if if if she had if she had the chills,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: it was it was life for I'm dying. I know
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: I'm dying, you know what I mean, I must be
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: a real thing. I mean, well, how terrifying for for
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: real medical personnel who who get stuck. I'm sure on occasion,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: um the person had something serious. How how scary that
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: would be. We're walking around the house. Don't get sick,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: and don't break your leg, don't get hurt, you know
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: what I mean? The kids playing around, like everybody calmed down.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: We don't want to go to the hospital right now. Now,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: it's not the time to go to the hospital. Right well,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: really there's you know, it's never a good time to
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: go to the hospital. But yeah, I thought about that,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: like if you had a appendix, right, I was exact
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: ass cheek, Yeah, I can have my ashcheek removed. But
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: it was an elective surgery turns out, so I couldn't
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: have that. But yeah, you don't want anything to go wrong.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: You're you're well, we'll see, you know, in the next
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: week or so if any of this people crowding around
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: each other something I actually have said. I don't. I
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: not to be Debbie down or towards the end of
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: the episode, but that things are spiking back up in
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: La and uh yeah, and no one's talking about it
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: because there's plenty else going on in the news, as
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: we all know. But I read I read some articles
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: like why is no one talking about the new COVID
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: spike in Los Angeles? Um, I think there's spikes in
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: a lot of places, but New York is going down
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: so much that it looks like a flat line. But
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: for the country, we need like the national line. Yeah, yes, yes,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: well yeah, I fear I fear that that everyone's kind
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: of over it. You know, people are like, all right,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: we did that, fuck it, we gotta get out of
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: the house now. And and and that might be fine
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: if you live in a place where where this isn't
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: this prevalent, but in LA it does appear to be
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: climbing back up. And the only reason why we're talking
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: about this right now, we know we try to get
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: you away from as listeners, and we try to keep
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: this as a distraction, a distract, as much as a
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: distraction as possible. But this is in the story, yes
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean, And so that's why we
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: that's why, guys, it's in. It's in the episode, and
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: so you know it's about Scott Foley being left. I mean,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: listen and Joel please weigh in as the only female
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: on the panel. But Scotty Scott Folly being left alone
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: by Sarah standing there with his roses, it just felt
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: a little like just so mean. I mean, with Elliott,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: she found love and and or not love necessarily, but
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: she really liked this guy. He's as bad as charming
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: as a human being could be. He looks like Scott Foley.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: She's like, she leaves him, She leaves him with the door.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: It looks exactly like Scott Vali. She leaves him at
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: the door. I mean, I don't know what are your
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: thoughts on that? Yeah, I think okay. So I didn't
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: get into movies from the seventies until like I was
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: in college. This is sort of my first experience watching
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: a woman be like, listen, I like you, but this
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: career I've invested in is everything to me. So we
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: have to pause because it wasn't even like a solid breakup.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: She's like, right now, I can't make this work. And like,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: as a you know, once I'm like twelve, and I
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: was like, you could just leave a dude for work.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: It was brilliant to still the light boys at that age.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, so tedious and so to
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: her to just be like, I'm gonna work on my stuff.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: I was like, this is brilliant. Oh my god, I
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: really like this scene. Oh I okay, there you go,
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: there's the answer. I was like, I mean, I was
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: impressed by the character making that choice because the writers
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: really went out of their way to make sure there
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: was absolutely nothing wrong with this guy. I mean, he
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: was as dreamy as it could be. But she was
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: getting distracted from her work and uh and she was like, look,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: I really am excited about this, but I this is
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: what I've worked my whole life for. So I gotta
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: I gotta push you away. Which he's not gone though,
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: is he. No, he does, he does come back. Yeah.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: But I don't know that she was distracted. I think
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: it was how the hospital reacted to her and the
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: walk of shame in the beginning of the episode. I
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: think that was more of a reason for her to
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: break up with. You know, Elliott is very worried about
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: what everyone thinks about her. That's what the character, that's
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: how the character is, you know she you know, she
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: even says in the beginning, and ninety nine percent of
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: my life is me trying to impress my dad, you
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: know what I mean. And and so I think when
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: the Walk of Shame thing happened and everyone made fun
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: of her, I think that's that's you know, it sent
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: her down the rabbit hole and she spiraled, and that's why.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: But he was also it wasn't just that Donald she
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: you know, Kelso's like grilling her and she doesn't know
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: the answers to questions at rounds where she always does,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: and then she starts getting in her head. At one
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: point she's like she can't think of something, and I like,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: I turned around, I'm like, come on, you know that
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: she's tired, maybe because she was up all night playing schoolgirl, right,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: But I think that stems from once again, you know,
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: Kelso seeing her at the at the scrubs machine and
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: giving her shit for not having her her scrubs that day,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I think, I don't know,
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: I could be I don't I don't know. It's probably
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: it's probably both a combination of both. But anyway, we
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: all know, we all know the spoiler alert that Scott
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: Foley comes back. He ends up being a an animal
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: as a marine biologist or an animal trainer at sea
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: world something like that. But what a great scene that was, though,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: too man where they break up because it looks like
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: it's going one way, you know, and the mist there's
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: a great misdirection, right, you know, she breaks she kind
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: of you see her breaking up with him earlier in
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: the script where he comes to visit her and she's like,
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: and he's doing all the right things, and she's getting
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: pissed off that he's doing all the right things. And
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: she comes out at the end and it seems like
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: she's gotten over all the all of the bs that
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: she was holding onto because of her Walk of Shame situation,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: and then in the middle of it, she discovers, wait
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: a second, it's not just that I am distracted because
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: of how perfect you are. And now's not the time
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: for me to be distracted. Now's the time for me
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: to be the best I possibly can be, so that
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: in a couple of years, in a few years, I
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: can find another I can find a guy just like
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: you and do it all over again, and this time
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: for Keeps and I feel and the way they both
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: play the scene is perfect because it really does feel
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: like Sean is hit by a mac truck because he
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: doesn't see it coming, you know what I mean. He
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: sees it as Okay, she had a bad day. I'm
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: going to bring her flowers and cheer her up. And
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: now she's walking back into the hospital and I'm standing
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: here with a dozen roses. I felt bad for him.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: I'm such a sucker for the writers really know how
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: to get me with, you know, love that cannot be.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, this poor guy, he's like crazy about
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: this girl. He's standing here with roses, and he's like,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: she goes, He goes, I'm gonna be I'm gonna wait
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: here because I know you're gonna change your mind in
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: two minutes. And she's like, I hope so, and then
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: she doesn't. He's just and then he trashes the roses.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: Well do you think he trashes the roses where he
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: leaves them and people just walk all over him. I
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: couldn't just figure that out. Yeah, I just thought of
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: that when I first saw the roses. I thought, yeah,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: come on, that's a little bit of a hissy fit. Yeah,
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: like he was jumping up and down on it. Yes, yes, stop.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: But the only reason I know that he doesn't disappear, well,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: come to think of it, Oh, no, the last episode
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: I guess of season one is somebody's wedding? Is it
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: Turk and Carlin? No, we don't get married until season three,
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: I think. Well, then at the end of season two
