- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear to Chuck in Uh. I don't
- 0:38Speaker 1: know if you know this or not, but as a
- 0:40Speaker 1: special treat we are trying something new here on Stuff
- 0:43Speaker 1: you should Know. What's that? We're actually running a language module,
- 0:47Speaker 1: recorded language module subliminally for our listeners. So you out
- 0:51Speaker 1: there in podcast language, just kick back, relax and prepared
- 0:55Speaker 1: to learn Russian without lifting a finger. While Chuck and
- 0:58Speaker 1: I talked about the topic of knife hunting, do you
- 1:00Speaker 1: know anything about that? Yeah? No, good? See it's working already. Well,
- 1:04Speaker 1: let me tell you about knife hunting, chuck. Okay, Arguably
- 1:07Speaker 1: it's the fairest way to hunt. And this is based
- 1:09Speaker 1: on an article I wrote is knife Hunting the Fairest
- 1:11Speaker 1: Way to Hunt, which is pretty subjective, and I was
- 1:14Speaker 1: a little worried about, you know, me bringing my own
- 1:17Speaker 1: opinions into it because I don't hunt. True, but it's
- 1:20Speaker 1: kind of an open and chuck cakes, if you asked me, well,
- 1:22Speaker 1: maybe so. And luckily, though, there is a there's a
- 1:25Speaker 1: principle out there among hunters and wildlife managers. It's called
- 1:29Speaker 1: the principle of fair chase, right, that there needs to
- 1:33Speaker 1: be a balance between um, the hunter and the prey. Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I mean like you can go out and spend tens
- 1:38Speaker 1: of thousands of dollars. You've got your a t V,
- 1:41Speaker 1: You've got your really super duper camo, you've got your
- 1:44Speaker 1: incredible scope in a deer exactly. There's you know, you
- 1:48Speaker 1: can there there's a launder detergent that's that removes any
- 1:52Speaker 1: odor whatsoever from you. You can put buck lur around,
- 1:56Speaker 1: there's feeding says, There's all sorts of things you can
- 1:58Speaker 1: do to an unsuspecting and well to raise your advantage
- 2:01Speaker 1: to where it's it's not even sport any longer. It's
- 2:04Speaker 1: just blood sport or target practice live animals. Right. Um, Now,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the principle of fair chases you were saying, it's basically
- 2:11Speaker 1: trying to strike a balance between the deer or whatever
- 2:14Speaker 1: you're hunting. I guess it doesn't matter what you're hunting,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you know. Um, so yeah, it applies across the board.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And you can't give a deer gun, So no, you can't.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And frankly, I think that would be a really bad idea.
- 2:24Speaker 1: All we've done to them with our cars and with
- 2:26Speaker 1: the hunters, right, don't give them cars or guns and
- 2:28Speaker 1: we'll be fine. Right, What what fairer way to hunt
- 2:32Speaker 1: is there than hunting with the knife? Right? I think
- 2:34Speaker 1: that would be the only fair way to hunt that?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Or bare hands? Yes, yeah, obviously bare hands going toe
- 2:41Speaker 1: to toe with like a bear. Dude. Actually, you're at
- 2:44Speaker 1: a disadvantage, you know, there's fair hair chase should be
- 2:47Speaker 1: balanced in your favor at that point. And frankly, I
- 2:50Speaker 1: mean probably all you're wearing is a loincloth, so everything's
- 2:53Speaker 1: gonna hurt extra back a soiled loinecloth at that definitely. Um,
- 2:57Speaker 1: so do you know much about knife hunting? Uh? Not
- 3:01Speaker 1: personally from experience, but you know, I know you and
- 3:03Speaker 1: I were talking about this a lot when you wrote
- 3:04Speaker 1: the article. Um. One thing I did want to talk
- 3:06Speaker 1: about first, though, was this thing you found about internet hunting,
- 3:09Speaker 1: which thankfully was shut down soon after it started. But
- 3:12Speaker 1: this is like the opposite spectrum, complete opposite. This guy
- 3:16Speaker 1: in Texas launched a website where you could hunt remotely
- 3:20Speaker 1: from your computer, and it was literally attached to a gun.
- 3:24Speaker 1: You could you had a camera and you could look
- 3:26Speaker 1: out on the wild range and see something, pan over
- 3:29Speaker 1: to it with your mouse, click it, and the gun
- 3:31Speaker 1: with fire. And lawmakers shut that down, you know too.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It's sweet, thankfully, Yeah, which is I frankly applaud that.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I mean, apparently it wasn't just animal rights people, hunters
- 3:41Speaker 1: as well, like sportsmen's groups were like this has to
- 3:44Speaker 1: go away, this can't be good, which is good to know. Yeah. So,
- 3:47Speaker 1: so we've got internet hunting band. I don't think you're
- 3:50Speaker 1: gonna see any any bands on knife hunting based on
- 3:53Speaker 1: questions of fairness. No, it's mostly used for wild boar, yeah,
- 3:57Speaker 1: which is kind of I mean, I don't. I'm no hunter,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but I think that kind of cool. First, Yeah, well,
- 4:01Speaker 1: I mean they're they're about they get up to fifty
- 4:04Speaker 1: pounds six feet long. There was there was one that
- 4:07Speaker 1: went around um on the internet and I actually went
- 4:10Speaker 1: onto Snopes and it was verified there was one that was, um,
- 4:13Speaker 1: I think eleven feet long, right, what that? What's the
- 4:16Speaker 1: name of that one? They called it like, um Jurassic
- 4:19Speaker 1: pork or something like that, and so I was like,
- 4:21Speaker 1: obviously this is a fake. I went on the steps.
- 4:23Speaker 1: They're like, no, we verified it was part of an
- 4:25Speaker 1: a p article. Was a knife it wasn't. It was
- 4:28Speaker 1: shot with a pistol, and it turned out that it
- 4:30Speaker 1: had been a family pet that was sold to this
- 4:32Speaker 1: hunting preserve like two days before the guy shot. But
- 4:36Speaker 1: so we've got a knife hunting. And basically what it
- 4:38Speaker 1: is is you you send dogs out to go run
- 4:41Speaker 1: after some some hogs who hide in the brush and
- 4:44Speaker 1: they are startled. They're generally tranquil and they're not aggressive
- 4:47Speaker 1: towards humans, but if you started them, they will run,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and when they start running, you want to kind of
- 4:52Speaker 1: get in between them and wherever they think they're going.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And when they get close and if you actually push this,
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know, seven hundred pound board to the ground and
- 5:00Speaker 1: stab it and stab it to death, and it still
- 5:03Speaker 1: results in the death of an animal. But if we're
- 5:05Speaker 1: talking about whether or not knife hunting is fair, then
- 5:08Speaker 1: arguably it's a lot fairer than being up in that tree. Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I would say, if you have the fortitude to leap
- 5:13Speaker 1: from a bush on top of a seven hundred pound
- 5:15Speaker 1: pig and stab it to death, then I'm not gonna
- 5:17Speaker 1: get in your way, right. And there was this one
- 5:19Speaker 1: hunt who actually uh and it happened in nineteen six
- 5:22Speaker 1: with this guy in Florida who not only knife hunted,
- 5:25Speaker 1: he used throwing knots. That was crazy. Yeah, it was crazy.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I'll have to af forward you the link. It's pretty interesting.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And while I'm forwarding to Chuck, you guys should go
- 5:33Speaker 1: read is knife hunting the Fairest Way to Hunt? On
- 5:36Speaker 1: how stuff Works dot com and stick around to find

- 5:43Speaker 1: eight and why you should know her name? Right after
- 5:46Speaker 1: this stuff you should Know is brought to you by Visa.
- 5:50Speaker 1: We all have things to think about, like, say, what's
- 5:52Speaker 1: the best site to buy a new leather jacket, or
- 5:54Speaker 1: whether to buy the three or six megapixel camera. But
- 5:57Speaker 1: thankfully we don't need to think about online for aud
- 6:00Speaker 1: because for every purchase you make, Visa keeps an eye
- 6:03Speaker 1: out for fraud with real time fraud monitoring and by
- 6:06Speaker 1: making sure you're not liable for any unauthorized purchases. How's
- 6:10Speaker 1: that for peace of mind, safe, secure Visa, Chuck, Do
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know her name? I don't know her name. Did
- 6:19Speaker 1: you want me to tell you? I know why she's famous? Okay?
- 6:22Speaker 1: Get well, it's Louise Joy Brown from Manchester, England. You
- 6:25Speaker 1: want to tell the people about her? Yes? I believe
- 6:28Speaker 1: she was the first person conceived in vitro, which is
- 6:32Speaker 1: Latin for fake baby? Is that right now? It's actually
- 6:35Speaker 1: Latin for within the class? Nice? Okay? Well, More commonly
- 6:40Speaker 1: people refer to in vitro fertilization as test tube baby
- 6:44Speaker 1: making within the glass. Yeah, so you want to know
