Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Oskar Howell: Tech Commentator on the rising use of generative AI in the workplace
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New research from Robert Half finds ninety one percent of
- 0:02Speaker 1: workers are using AI to help with their day to
- 0:04Speaker 1: day tasks and ninety three percent are open with their
- 0:07Speaker 1: higher ups about using it. But is it reducing the
- 0:10Speaker 1: importance of human employees? Tech commentator Oscar how is with
- 0:14Speaker 1: us this morning?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Good morning, Oscar, morning Francesca. Thank you for having me on.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It used to be seen as almost cheating, didn't it.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We sort of hit the fact that we might be
- 0:22Speaker 1: using AI. But is the perception of AI changing?
- 0:26Speaker 2: I think so. I think a lot of employees, especially
- 0:29Speaker 2: in rolls, traditional desk rolls, really opening themselves up to
- 0:34Speaker 2: using AI and their daily jobs, and they're not afraid
- 0:36Speaker 2: to be talking with their managers about it.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Why are we suddenly so open about using it?
- 0:42Speaker 2: I don't know. There was almost a shift in the culture. Really,
- 0:44Speaker 2: a new research out of Robert Half of the crypting
- 0:48Speaker 2: agency you mentioned, fifty six are using it on a
- 0:51Speaker 2: daily or near daily basis. You know, maybe the advancement
- 0:55Speaker 2: of some of these AI tools that were seeing are
- 0:57Speaker 2: making it, you know, are making their workloads so their
- 1:01Speaker 2: ability to work so efficient that it's something that you
- 1:03Speaker 2: kind of just have to bring up. You know. I mean,
- 1:05Speaker 2: if you can turn around a report in thirty seconds
- 1:08Speaker 2: that might have taken you a week. Perhaps your manager
- 1:10Speaker 2: may have started off in questions, so it might be
- 1:13Speaker 2: it might pay to be forthright in these situations.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I've been told by a few ATR
- 1:18Speaker 1: people that actually, these days, you know, they are looking
- 1:22Speaker 1: for people who understand how to use it, as opposed
- 1:24Speaker 1: to once upon a time, you know, implying that you know,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you're kind of cheating on your job.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I think it's becoming a real staple of
- 1:36Speaker 2: a lot of desk jobs. And I think, like you mentioned,
- 1:39Speaker 2: businesses are looking for people who have more than just
- 1:41Speaker 2: accurse through understanding of how AI works. Obviously, it's allowing
- 1:45Speaker 2: people to become more efficient. It's allowing them to get
- 1:48Speaker 2: their work done quicker and takes a lot of the
- 1:50Speaker 2: workload off. And yeah, I mean there's also the fact
- 1:53Speaker 2: that it can help you know, having an understanding of
- 1:57Speaker 2: AI can help you, you know, spot scam spot when
- 2:01Speaker 2: it's used maybe not so well. And yeah, I think
- 2:04Speaker 2: it's just improving people's ability to work.
- 2:07Speaker 1: What are the impacts of such a huge increase? Are
- 2:09Speaker 1: we putting jobs at risk?
- 2:12Speaker 2: I mean, that seems to be the fear at the moment, right,
- 2:15Speaker 2: And I almost wonder if a lot of these people
- 2:17Speaker 2: who are upskilling in the use of AI might be
- 2:21Speaker 2: doing so with that understanding that perhaps, you know, if
- 2:23Speaker 2: they're not on top of things, will maybe coming for
- 2:26Speaker 2: their jobs. I mean, at this point, eighty seven percent
- 2:30Speaker 2: of work are sampled in this survey said that they
- 2:33Speaker 2: think it's necessary for career success in the future. And yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 2: I tend to agree because I mean, if you, like
- 2:39Speaker 2: I said, like we said, it's so powerful and it
- 2:41Speaker 2: can turn around a lot of these creative or desk
- 2:43Speaker 2: roll you know, for a lot of these jobs, that
- 2:46Speaker 2: can turn around a lot of this work so quickly. Yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I think there's a real possibility that some of these
- 2:51Speaker 2: roles might find themselves outpaced by technology in the next
- 2:54Speaker 2: few years.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Oscar, thank you so much for your thoughts this morning.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Really appreciate it. And of course we were talking to
- 3:00Speaker 1: today about the Oscars and how they've mentioned that you know,
- 3:02Speaker 1: if you happen to use AI in your film, it
- 3:05Speaker 1: doesn't mean that you won't win an Oscar. You were
- 3:07Speaker 1: still eligible and have an opportunity to win one of
- 3:09Speaker 1: the big Oscars. The reason they had to say that
- 3:12Speaker 1: was because actually, somewhere along the line in Hollywood, when
- 3:15Speaker 1: someone makes a film, AI is being used, whether it's
- 3:18Speaker 1: being used in the production stage and the post production stage,
- 3:21Speaker 1: Somewhere along the way, everybody's quietly using it. They didn't
- 3:25Speaker 1: want to admit it, but they are actually all quietly
- 3:28Speaker 1: using it in different ways. For more from earlier edition
