Transcript
- 0:12Speaker 1: Nigel. I am the vocalist of car Sex.
- 0:18Speaker 2: We are basically a five piece rock and roll outfit
- 0:23Speaker 2: from Long Beach, California.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Fantastic Mike, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, thanks for having me. Appreciate it, my pleasure.
- 0:33Speaker 3: So Tasix will release your thirty p Human Interest on
- 0:36Speaker 3: Juna's sixth Brother. She's not far away now, how are
- 0:38Speaker 3: you feeling that?
- 0:40Speaker 4: Good?
- 0:41Speaker 5: Good?
- 0:41Speaker 2: We got a handful of shows lined up to kind
- 0:44Speaker 2: of support the release. One of them on the six
- 0:48Speaker 2: is going to be at our basically like our home
- 0:51Speaker 2: bar here just a hop skipping to jump away and
- 0:56Speaker 2: so that should be really cool. And we're going to
- 0:59Speaker 2: be releasing uh music video for one of the songs
- 1:02Speaker 2: as well.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So pretty yeah, super stoked on everything coming out.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Very nice us. Tell us a bit more about the
- 1:09Speaker 3: AP from a musical point of view and what are
- 1:11Speaker 3: you have gone forward with it?
- 1:14Speaker 2: You know, the uh basically this one, it's it's pretty
- 1:19Speaker 2: much like our third our third EP effort.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I feel like the band has been around for a
- 1:26Speaker 1: little bit more than nine years now.
- 1:32Speaker 2: This is definitely our strongest effort. I feel just out
- 1:38Speaker 2: of the development of the band over the years and everything.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I feel like we're as as much a part of
- 1:46Speaker 2: each other as we can be. So I feel like
- 1:49Speaker 2: this one is really probably the first one that is
- 1:53Speaker 2: just one, like one genuine just right from all of
- 2:01Speaker 2: us as a unit. And yeah, super stoked on it.
- 2:07Speaker 2: The basic idea, A lot of our a lot of
- 2:10Speaker 2: our material goes through pretty wide variety of subjects, but
- 2:20Speaker 2: lightly touches on politics to a certain degree, but I
- 2:24Speaker 2: wouldn't say that much. Just really like the human condition
- 2:30Speaker 2: as a broad explanation. Sometimes it's a little difficult for
- 2:35Speaker 2: me to explain exactly what certain songs or the idea
- 2:39Speaker 2: of the band is about, because I really like for
- 2:42Speaker 2: the audience to experience it for themselves. And I feel
- 2:46Speaker 2: like our our presentation is like more up for percept
- 2:52Speaker 2: like perception or like subjective to the to the listener,
- 2:56Speaker 2: because it is for us as well, Like I feel
- 2:59Speaker 2: like it means something different to all of the band
- 3:02Speaker 2: members individually as well.
- 3:05Speaker 3: So yeah, cool short, So well, you're gonna find this
- 3:11Speaker 3: next question a bit hard then, mate, because I want
- 3:12Speaker 3: to run through the epage. It's only got what's got
- 3:15Speaker 3: to four six seven tracks on it, so I want
- 3:17Speaker 3: to run through them. One at a time, and I
- 3:19Speaker 3: was going to get you to tell me a bit
- 3:20Speaker 3: more about them, but it sounds like you don't really
- 3:22Speaker 3: like doing that. So if you want to just tell us,
- 3:24Speaker 3: tell us sort of how that song represents the band
- 3:27Speaker 3: moving forward, I guess, and and a little bit about it.
- 3:29Speaker 3: So we'll start with the first song, Sitting Ducks.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Sitting Ducks, like Cricket Canvas, is a lot of like
- 3:39Speaker 2: our our depiction of like a modern like the modern
- 3:49Speaker 2: landscape of just humanity in general.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I guess.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I mean, whether it be you know, just like I
- 3:57Speaker 2: don't know, the kind of the dark side of everything
- 4:01Speaker 2: that is going on, whether it be that politics, inner
- 4:06Speaker 2: struggles especially and just trying to navigate like the modern
- 4:12Speaker 2: landscape that we face as like society in general. I
- 4:17Speaker 2: would say that those two songs for sure are touching
- 4:20Speaker 2: on that the most, you know, the idea or concept
- 4:26Speaker 2: of like you know, existential crisis and just anxiety in general,
- 4:32Speaker 2: I feel really guides this epiece. So I wouldn't say
- 4:37Speaker 2: that it's necessarily a.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Concept piece, but it could be viewed as that depending
- 4:43Speaker 1: on the person. I guess.
- 4:46Speaker 3: My Postava Canvason could just expind that then there's Beyond
- 4:49Speaker 3: the Trees.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Beyond the Trees is actually the only one that was
- 4:54Speaker 1: kind of.
- 4:57Speaker 2: My wife and I were actually on a plane back
- 4:59Speaker 2: from Georgia visiting some family, and a lot of times
- 5:04Speaker 2: I like to just kind of, you know, space out
- 5:09Speaker 2: and look out the window on planes. We've been doing
- 5:11Speaker 2: it a lot more recently in the or in the
- 5:13Speaker 2: recent years, but I used to have quite a bit
- 5:16Speaker 2: of flight anxiety, and one of the one of the
- 5:21Speaker 2: times that we were coming home from Georgia, uh, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I was just kind of looking out the window at
- 5:26Speaker 2: the at the greenery below and just started writing, because
- 5:31Speaker 2: it typically helps me work through anxiety at points like that,
- 5:36Speaker 2: and it just kind of like this weird idea of
- 5:40Speaker 2: like a story of just a killer.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's weird because it's the only song that's really like
- 5:48Speaker 1: a story that's made up completely in the EP, which
- 5:52Speaker 1: was interesting for me.
- 5:53Speaker 2: But it was like so natural a feeling as the
- 5:56Speaker 2: time that I ended up just writing all of the
- 5:58Speaker 2: lyrics within you know, us from taxi to being completely
- 6:04Speaker 2: in the air, So it was you know, probably a
- 6:06Speaker 2: matter of like ten or fifteen minutes, and I just
- 6:09Speaker 2: wrote the lyrics to it.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And then when I got back our drummer at the time.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He just kind of came up with that drum beat
- 6:18Speaker 2: and we had the rock and just driving bass and
- 6:22Speaker 2: it was just like all super just organic, and I like, personally,
- 6:29Speaker 2: I think that that's probably one of my favorite songs
- 6:31Speaker 2: on the EP, just because it just it was so
- 6:35Speaker 2: easy and just I just love the way that it sounds.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It's a little bit different from the rest of it,
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know, and and kind of shows a little bit
- 6:43Speaker 2: more of the dynamic that we can get, you know.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So I like that one a lot.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I'll be dyning you the story going. The next one
- 6:51Speaker 3: called fuck This.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I would say in short, because I've been asked a
- 6:58Speaker 2: lot about that one. This, Uh, I would.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Say fuck this because we we've been playing that one
- 7:05Speaker 1: live outside of the rest of the EP for quite
- 7:09Speaker 1: some time.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So it was like one of the first songs that
- 7:12Speaker 2: we really like exposed everybody to, like as far as
- 7:14Speaker 2: the audience, and we've been playing it for like probably
- 7:19Speaker 2: a couple of years now because the recording has been
- 7:21Speaker 2: a long time coming, and uh, you know, generally it's
- 7:27Speaker 2: I feel like the I feel like the title explains
- 7:29Speaker 2: a lot of it. It's pretty it's pretty self explanatory,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but in general, I would say, just as as simply
- 7:39Speaker 2: as I can, it's probably just a song about like that,
- 7:44Speaker 2: like that inner are those inner demons that can kind
- 7:48Speaker 2: of constantly be knocking on your head and uh and
- 7:56Speaker 2: and trying to get in and basically, uh, just that
- 7:59Speaker 2: inner struggle of like really trying to not only recognize
- 8:03Speaker 2: it in its entirety, but really like face it.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And Yeah, I think that's pretty much it in a
- 8:11Speaker 1: nutshell right for me.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, then we move on to Landmine, which was a single.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I believe.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Landmine is actually the one that we have the video
- 8:23Speaker 2: coming out for as well. So yeah, our friend, our
- 8:26Speaker 2: friend Chris actually shot the video and it was really cool.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It was it was in this kind of like warehouseye area,
- 8:34Speaker 2: with a bunch of core background lights and everything. I'm
- 8:36Speaker 2: really excited about the way that that turned out because
- 8:38Speaker 2: his cinematography basically he just filmed us doing like a
- 8:42Speaker 2: live thing.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah, but the energy was really good.
- 8:46Speaker 2: And like he's a friend of ours, he's shot a
- 8:48Speaker 2: bunch of our photos before, and we've known him for years,
- 8:50Speaker 2: and I feel like he was really able to like
- 8:53Speaker 2: capture the essence of the band live which is one
- 8:57Speaker 2: of our stronger points for the most part, I think.
- 9:02Speaker 2: But yeah, that one, as far as what it's about
- 9:06Speaker 2: is kind of ah.
- 9:10Speaker 6: It's it's a it's almost like a part two to
- 9:14Speaker 6: a song on our last ep, Your Lesson, and uh,
- 9:19Speaker 6: basically it's in short, kind of about a complete like
- 9:24Speaker 6: mind meld.
- 9:26Speaker 2: A friend of mine and I were like dosed unintentionally
- 9:31Speaker 2: with like, uh what should have been a lethal amount
- 9:34Speaker 2: of LSD like years ago, and it's kept it's kind
- 9:38Speaker 2: of it kind of touches on the nightmare the nightmare
- 9:43Speaker 2: healthscape that ended up ensuing and we were we ended
- 9:48Speaker 2: up being like hospitalized and everything, and it was like
- 9:51Speaker 2: a long process. So like for me, it was very introspective,
- 9:57Speaker 2: I would expect the And that's that's one of the
- 10:01Speaker 2: reasons why, for instance, like I don't really like to
- 10:06Speaker 2: particularly say like like specifically like because there's little bits
- 10:10Speaker 2: and pieces of everything, right, Yeah, like like a lot
- 10:13Speaker 2: of it is about like it was inspired by that
- 10:16Speaker 2: experience for me, but I feel like it could be
- 10:19Speaker 2: a completely different understanding for somebody else because that is
- 10:23Speaker 2: a unique experience or fairly unique, I would imagine, so,
- 10:28Speaker 2: but yeah, for me, that's yeah, that's that's kind of
- 10:31Speaker 2: where that one was stem and the landmine is basically
- 10:35Speaker 2: the ship hitting the fan.
- 10:37Speaker 3: He ended up catching up with the guy Dice did
- 10:39Speaker 3: break his.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Legs, No, no, unfortunately it was it was.
- 10:44Speaker 2: A friend actually a friend that we uh played music
- 10:48Speaker 2: with also, and he had no idea that he had
- 10:51Speaker 2: done it. He had, Yeah, so it was it was
- 10:55Speaker 2: just a giant ship show. Yeah, really really weird, a
- 11:00Speaker 2: really weird experience to say the least.
- 11:02Speaker 3: So yeah, all right, now, I don't want you to
- 11:09Speaker 3: tell me what this stands for, because I reckon that'd
- 11:10Speaker 3: be part of the fun of it.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But what's d k C about? So I will tell
- 11:16Speaker 2: you what it stands for? Dead Kids Club? The concept
- 11:20Speaker 2: was basically the concept really was I had I had
- 11:27Speaker 2: wrote like most of the lyrics, and and Jeremy the
- 11:31Speaker 2: bassist and I kind of got together and we wanted
- 11:34Speaker 2: to come up with this concept of bringing like the
- 11:40Speaker 2: bringing the tragedy, like the true fucking tragedy that is, uh,
- 11:48Speaker 2: you know, school shootings and the regular like just just
- 11:51Speaker 2: the complacency of everybody's kind of acceptance of it now
- 11:57Speaker 2: and everything that follows with it. We thought that it
- 11:59Speaker 2: would be an intrying idea to kind of write the
- 12:03Speaker 2: song from like a dad who is whose kid was
- 12:09Speaker 2: killed in a school shooting's perspective, just you know, I
- 12:16Speaker 2: had not specifically with with school shootings, but I lost
- 12:21Speaker 2: basically my second mother to a to a mass shooting
- 12:25Speaker 2: at a salon in twenty twelve. So like for me,
- 12:30Speaker 2: any any kind of area like that is sensitive and
- 12:34Speaker 2: I feel like.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Should be should be talked about and.
- 12:36Speaker 2: As uncomfortable as it is, you know, it should it
- 12:39Speaker 2: should be something that you know, is not just like
- 12:43Speaker 2: just a oh, there's a news clip again. You know,
- 12:47Speaker 2: let's let's kind of talk about like the deeper, a
- 12:51Speaker 2: deeper understanding of this and like the emotional more of
- 12:55Speaker 2: the emotional part of it, because I feel like that's
- 12:57Speaker 2: really important and gets glanced over quite a bit now
- 13:02Speaker 2: because everybody's just kind of there's a numbness to.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It now, you know. So, yeah, that's what helped.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I'm not gonna side track. I'm gonna side track for
- 13:12Speaker 3: a little bit because you've moved over a little bit.
- 13:13Speaker 3: But is that a monkey playing guitar in the background?
- 13:16Speaker 3: My contact my eyes off it?
- 13:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, that's the Yeah, that's mister that's that's
- 13:21Speaker 2: mister monkey.
- 13:22Speaker 1: My sister actually made that guitar. That's so cool. Yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 1: it's a coloss of Yeah, she gave that to me
- 13:30Speaker 1: as a gift years ago. I love that one.
- 13:33Speaker 3: You just kept sort of creeping over a little bit
- 13:35Speaker 3: and it sort of came more and more into you
- 13:36Speaker 3: and I'm like, yeah, fuck guitar. So back to the
- 13:42Speaker 3: eping Stella. It's a final song.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Cool, Oh yeah, Stella, let's see Stella.
- 13:52Speaker 2: That's probably if if if Beyond the Trees is not
- 13:56Speaker 2: my favorite, that that probably is. I feel like that's
- 14:02Speaker 2: just like in a good, like all encompassing kind of
- 14:04Speaker 2: coming to terms with I feel like it's a good
- 14:09Speaker 2: story ender and that's kind of why we, you know,
- 14:13Speaker 2: placed it where we did. But yeah, I feel like
- 14:19Speaker 2: I feel like that's the most hopeful track I you know,
- 14:24Speaker 2: like some sort of crescendo.
- 14:26Speaker 1: To an end.
- 14:28Speaker 2: In in the sense that not necessarily like there is
- 14:32Speaker 2: there is an open ending still, right, but it's like
- 14:35Speaker 2: there's things that have been looked at and faced in
- 14:39Speaker 2: ways that they haven't been before, and there's like not
- 14:42Speaker 2: necessarily like a reckoning, but I there's some sort of.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Some sort of piece made.
- 14:53Speaker 2: With with everything that has gone on, or I guess
- 14:58Speaker 2: not necessarily an ENLiGHT meant, but a a little bit
- 15:03Speaker 2: of closure to some darkness and a little bit of
- 15:07Speaker 2: you know, light at the end of the tunnel, for
- 15:11Speaker 2: lack of a better description.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, right, nice. Now, I don't know too much
- 15:17Speaker 3: about you guys, but I've listened to AP. You sound
- 15:19Speaker 3: like it'd be a lot of fun lives. I run
- 15:21Speaker 3: a sort of typical classics liveshire.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Typically we do.
- 15:28Speaker 2: I think that our strongest point is our live performance
- 15:31Speaker 2: outside of I used to say that all the time,
- 15:33Speaker 2: but after we made this record.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know. Now, I feel like
- 15:36Speaker 1: we're coming into.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Our own like fully, but yeah, we we have a
- 15:42Speaker 2: great time playing live. You know. It's it's basically like, yeah,
- 15:48Speaker 2: sometimes controlled chaos, sometimes not controlled chaos, but it's.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Really easy for us. I mean, we've all been together
- 15:56Speaker 1: for so long.
- 15:57Speaker 2: We always talk about how like being in a bad
- 16:00Speaker 2: is like being in a relationship with four other dudes.
- 16:03Speaker 2: So it's like we've been through so much in like
- 16:07Speaker 2: almost absolute almost a decade, that it's like we are
- 16:12Speaker 2: so comfortable with each other and in our atmosphere that
- 16:18Speaker 2: that I feel like we can lose ourselves, like entirely
- 16:24Speaker 2: together and individually like live, which is a great feeling.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Even if we're having a shitty show playing to no one,
- 16:31Speaker 2: you know, it's it's it's still it's still a great
- 16:36Speaker 2: experience for us.
- 16:37Speaker 5: You know.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I just get in my own little world.
- 16:41Speaker 3: So very Caroll, very cool. You've got a couple of
- 16:45Speaker 3: shows coming up too. I'm going to start with a
- 16:47Speaker 3: June to sixth one because this might be out in
- 16:49Speaker 3: time for the other one. But you've got the one
- 16:50Speaker 3: that June to six at the Vine in Long Beach
- 16:52Speaker 3: for you launch, and then you've got supply and demand
- 16:55Speaker 3: on September sixth, So tell us a bit about those shows.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So those ones are both long each our hometown. We
- 17:02Speaker 2: love those places. We're good friends with basically everybody there.
- 17:06Speaker 2: We have a really like I've always been really proud
- 17:10Speaker 2: and like happy with our like our communities, like music
- 17:17Speaker 2: scene and the support that everybody gets. I feel like
- 17:21Speaker 2: it's kind of rare to come by as far as
- 17:26Speaker 2: the diversity and like the general togetherness of the community
- 17:33Speaker 2: in general. So we like, I feel really I feel
- 17:37Speaker 2: really privileged to be a part of like a scene
- 17:40Speaker 2: or like a you know, just a rock and roll
- 17:43Speaker 2: community that's that struck because it's something to be adored.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So we we always think it's really important to still
- 17:51Speaker 2: play a lot in Long Beach. Those those two are
- 17:56Speaker 2: staples for us. So we thought that Vine would be
- 17:59Speaker 2: perfect just to just to put put out.
- 18:03Speaker 1: The new guy and you know it's it's more intimate,
- 18:08Speaker 1: which we really like.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Uh So yeah, we're really looking for at both those shows.
- 18:14Speaker 2: We are playing in the desert at Palmdale at the
- 18:19Speaker 2: Transplant Brewery tomorrow with our friends French Mouth from La
- 18:24Speaker 2: so that one should be really good. And then I
- 18:28Speaker 2: think that we have our drummer. Our drummer is actually
- 18:31Speaker 2: getting surgery, I think at the beginning of August, so
- 18:34Speaker 2: we're going to take a little bit of time off
- 18:36Speaker 2: during that, like so he can recover obviously.
- 18:41Speaker 1: But yeah, we're really looking forward to all the upcoming
- 18:43Speaker 1: ones and.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Hopefully planning like a small tour come either you know,
- 18:50Speaker 2: end of August or beginning of September.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Kind of fault type situation.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Very cool, but in the maintime, Human Interest is out
- 18:58Speaker 3: on June to sixth, so why could people get a
- 19:01Speaker 3: hold of a copy or keep up tonight with the band.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Uh, basically just a car Sex LBC dot com is
- 19:08Speaker 1: our website. We're on like every social uh you know
- 19:13Speaker 1: under car Sex or car Sex lb YouTube, all of
- 19:18Speaker 1: all of the mainstreaming uh you know Spotify and Apple
- 19:21Speaker 1: Music all that, all that, all that jazz and uh
- 19:26Speaker 1: yeah we have uh we have much available to shows,
- 19:30Speaker 1: CS and stuff, you know. But yeah, wherever you can,
- 19:37Speaker 1: wherever you can get your mainstream streaming type situation.
- 19:42Speaker 5: You know, just.
- 20:12Speaker 7: Say a lot food.
- 20:13Speaker 8: It's just a little pass just because they had to freeze.
- 20:19Speaker 4: He was on the phone, but tells Freece do it.
- 20:23Speaker 7: So so I'm just saying, maybe.
- 20:26Speaker 4: They's some faith. It's justice said maybe kill the kidney.
- 20:31Speaker 4: So to just this out the action.
- 20:36Speaker 7: Weekly become bid, let No let Mine.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Go, wris for me A play for say chance, play.
- 21:06Speaker 7: To know it.
- 21:07Speaker 4: That's episode say you say I change So this says
- 21:13Speaker 4: it's cassious for you tram.
- 21:20Speaker 7: Miss the shop.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I ever say that, mister.
- 21:32Speaker 7: Slow who.
- 22:37Speaker 8: Says this?
- 23:01Speaker 7: The man whose w
