- 0:32Speaker 2: which means that I'm doing my best to spend as
- 0:34Speaker 2: much time in the sunshine with Kylie and the girls
- 0:36Speaker 2: as I can. So each day during the Queensland school holidays,
- 0:40Speaker 2: I'm going to be featuring on the podcast. Some of
- 0:42Speaker 2: my favorite podcast guests from twenty twenty two were doing
- 0:45Speaker 2: Lightning Round question and answer format. Today's guest is the
- 0:48Speaker 2: one and only missus Happy Families, Kylie Coulson. Kylie, You've
- 0:55Speaker 2: never been submitted to a Lightning Round before, but today
- 0:59Speaker 2: is the day where I get to ask you all
- 1:01Speaker 2: of the questions and you get to well, I mean.
- 1:04Speaker 1: You actually did do a Lightning Round.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It's been a long time. It was right right back
- 1:08Speaker 2: when my very Your First Question podcast. Yeah, that's right. Yeah,
- 1:12Speaker 2: if you want to hear how bad it was, you
- 1:13Speaker 2: can go back, I know, like episode numb one hundred
- 1:15Speaker 2: and thirty or there.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Have to have it on the highest volume because I
- 1:19Speaker 1: talk so quietly.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So I've got a whole lot of new Lightning Round questions.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I ask everybody that I interview now for the podcast
- 1:26Speaker 2: these questions, and today I thought we'd do something together.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I thought I'd ask you the Lightning Round questions. Some
- 1:33Speaker 2: are fun, some are serious, some are impossible to answer accurately.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You're just going to dig a hole. Let's see how
- 1:40Speaker 2: we go. Question number one. Everyone knows this, but we're
- 1:43Speaker 2: we're going to treat you like you're a special VIP guest.
- 1:47Speaker 2: How many kids do you have and how old are they?
- 1:50Speaker 1: Oh, you're testing me from the outset. I have six children.
- 1:54Speaker 2: We we no, you're asking me.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Okay, fine, I have six children and they're all girls,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and my youngsters eight twelve, fifteen, eighteen, nineteen, and twenty three.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Okay, do you have a favorite child?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Of course, not would that I'll say in public?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Would you like some time to think about that. No,
- 2:16Speaker 2: of course not. Who do you love the most? Me
- 2:18Speaker 2: or the kids?
- 2:19Speaker 1: You?
- 2:19Speaker 2: Oh, you're so good at this ideal number of kids? Six? Yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 2: it is. It's always what you wanted from the time
- 2:26Speaker 2: I knew you wanted six kids.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But if I could go back at No. No, six,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I absolutely love it.
- 2:32Speaker 2: How do you rate yourself as a parent?
- 2:34Speaker 1: Oh?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Do you know what?
- 2:37Speaker 1: Over the years, I think that I have gotten a
- 2:40Speaker 1: lot better at this process. I'm definitely not perfect, but
- 2:43Speaker 1: I feel like I'm getting a handle on it as
- 2:45Speaker 1: i'm mature.
- 2:47Speaker 2: What's something great that your parents did that you've tried
- 2:50Speaker 2: to continue in your parenting.
- 2:52Speaker 1: My dad was really really good at spending time with
- 2:57Speaker 1: me in my emotional moments and as each of our
- 3:02Speaker 1: children and especially being girls and being probably a lot
- 3:06Speaker 1: more hormonal. I've really tried hard to tap into that
- 3:11Speaker 1: skill of sitting in their space when when things are hard.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Who's a better parent you or me?
- 3:18Speaker 1: I think that we have different strengths.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Okay, so you're not going to give me a straight answer.
- 3:23Speaker 1: No, I'm not, because I think that there are some
- 3:25Speaker 1: things that I do way better than you.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Get Like what.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I can't think of anything off the top of my.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Head, right, come on, lightning round, You've just got to
- 3:35Speaker 2: say whatever comes in mind.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I think dealing with the girls hormonal outbursts, I think
- 3:40Speaker 1: that I deal with them predominantly better than you do. Interesting,
- 3:46Speaker 1: But there are other things that you deal with hands
- 3:49Speaker 1: down better than me. Like what I'm not telling you.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I'm not about you today, No, I know, but I'm
- 3:55Speaker 2: really curious now.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I think you have the capacity to not take their
- 3:59Speaker 1: outburst personally, and as such are able to see them
- 4:05Speaker 1: as challenged and irrational and immature, beautiful little human beings
- 4:11Speaker 1: who just need to be understood. You just don't take
- 4:13Speaker 1: it personally. And I struggle with that from time to time.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And so what I love about what you do is
- 4:20Speaker 1: just that constant reminder of who they are and just
- 4:25Speaker 1: how much you love them.
- 4:27Speaker 2: What's the hardest thing about being a parent.
- 4:29Speaker 1: That there is never just one challenge to deal with
- 4:32Speaker 1: In any given moment. Each of our children are living
- 4:37Speaker 1: parallel lives in a collective space together, and at any
- 4:43Speaker 1: given moment in time, every one of us has a
- 4:49Speaker 1: burden of some sort, and as a parent, it's almost
- 4:52Speaker 1: like they're all bundled into your basket and you feel
- 4:55Speaker 1: the weight of that.
- 4:57Speaker 2: If you could spend an hour with the kids at
- 4:59Speaker 2: any what would you choose? And why?
- 5:04Speaker 1: I think it's five or six. There's just such an
- 5:08Speaker 1: innocence about our little prestook rulers, and they are just
- 5:12Speaker 1: so thirsty for knowledge, and they just see you with
- 5:16Speaker 1: rose colored glasses.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You're their world, right, Yes, Kylie. What's the ultimate joy
- 5:23Speaker 2: as a parent?
- 5:24Speaker 1: I think it's when your big kids leave home and
- 5:28Speaker 1: they ring just to say hi.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Most controversial question of all after that beautiful moment, what's
- 5:34Speaker 2: the right age for kids to have a mobile phone?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Never?
- 5:41Speaker 2: It's the question that I get all the time. Drives
- 5:43Speaker 2: me up the wall. What's that thing that your parents
- 5:45Speaker 2: always said that you swore you'd never say, but it
- 5:47Speaker 2: keeps popping out of your mouth.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I'm sure there are probably a hundred things, but I cannot,
- 5:52Speaker 1: for the life of me think of one.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Now. Yeah, you'll probably think of it once you let
- 5:55Speaker 2: the studio. We need to record that again. What's the
- 5:59Speaker 2: kid's favorite thing to do with you?
- 6:01Speaker 1: I actually think it's snuggles. Yeah, you know, even the
- 6:05Speaker 1: other day, our twenty three year old came in and
- 6:08Speaker 1: I wasn't feeling particularly well, so I was just having
- 6:11Speaker 1: a lie down in bed, and she literally just jumped
- 6:13Speaker 1: in right next to me. So, you know, from her
- 6:16Speaker 1: down to our eight year old who comes in every morning,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I think snuggles would be hands down.
- 6:22Speaker 2: What are you most looking forward to as a parent.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Being a grandparent? As I'm watching just the way I'm
- 6:31Speaker 1: maturing as a parent and in some ways wishing that
- 6:37Speaker 1: I had known all the things that I know now,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to seeing that growth and that maturity
- 6:45Speaker 1: develop even more as I grandparent.
- 6:49Speaker 2: If you could go back to you as a young parent,
- 6:51Speaker 2: having one of those tough moments and being so inexperienced,
- 6:54Speaker 2: what advice would you give yourself?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Just be kind to yourself in that space and remembering
- 7:04Speaker 1: so acutely being aware of my limitations and my weaknesses
- 7:09Speaker 1: and just wishing I could have been more and now
- 7:14Speaker 1: recognizing that I was all I could be in those moments,
- 7:19Speaker 1: So learning to be kind to myself and giving myself
- 7:21Speaker 1: the grace that I would give anybody else who was struggling.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Giving that to me would have made a big difference.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Last question, Kylie Colson, what's been your biggest win as
- 7:35Speaker 2: a mum.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I think that it would be that as my children
- 7:40Speaker 1: have matured and grown, when most children would typically choose
- 7:46Speaker 1: to not want their parents in their space, my girls
- 7:50Speaker 1: have relished the opportunities that I've been able to volunteer
- 7:55Speaker 1: and be in their classes, or participate in their school
- 8:01Speaker 1: events or church events, you know, going on a school
- 8:05Speaker 1: trip to Germany with our oldest daughter, and her actually
- 8:11Speaker 1: relishing the opportunity to share that experience with her mum,
- 8:14Speaker 1: with her friends. And I've watched it time and time
- 8:18Speaker 1: again with the kids at different stages and for different reasons.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I just feel so grateful that they still work me around.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Kylie Coilson, you survived the lightning round. Thank you so
- 8:27Speaker 2: much for your insights and ideas. I hope it's been
- 8:29Speaker 2: inspiring for people who have heard it. I've loved hearing
- 8:32Speaker 2: your answers.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Thanks.
