- 0:00Speaker 1: Des Flanagan and Ruby Clark from The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular,
- 0:05Speaker 1: which is on at Crown Perth in a very made-for-it.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Tent, isn't it?
- 0:09Speaker 1: Circus tent. Roll up, roll up. On the Riverside entry there.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It's on until October 10. Tickets are through Ticketek. They're
- 0:15Speaker 1: with us this morning.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Good morning. Welcome.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Des, are you Hugh Shackman in the show?
- 0:21Speaker 3: No, funnily enough, I'm Des in the show. No, I
- 0:25Speaker 3: play a showman.
- 0:26Speaker 4: It's a completely recontextualized version of the show with the
- 0:28Speaker 4: songs from the movies. So that's the only thing you
- 0:31Speaker 4: can really expect or just to have a good time.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So it's not the greatest showman on stage. As you said,
- 0:36Speaker 1: it incorporates the music, but then it's a circus spectacular.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So it's not the movie in three days.
- 0:40Speaker 5: No, no.
- 0:41Speaker 4: So I play a showman who's been running this circus
- 0:43Speaker 4: for time immemorial.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I want out. Ruby plays a character called Max.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 4: And I try and coerce her into joining this marvelous circus.
- 0:53Speaker 4: And so throughout the hour and 40 show that we have,
- 0:56Speaker 4: you'll see trapeze, Teeter board and slack line.
- 1:00Speaker 3: It's so impressive.
- 1:00Speaker 1: So you run away to join the circus.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:03Speaker 4: I do.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And then the oldest tale in the book.
- 1:06Speaker 5: And then you see what happens when I do join
- 1:09Speaker 5: the circus.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Some of the things you people do are just absolutely
- 1:14Speaker 1: mind blowing and amazing. Do you ever sit side of
- 1:17Speaker 1: stage and see stuff and just go.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Whoa, still have your mind blown every day. Every day.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:25Speaker 5: There's like points in the show where, Um, where, you know,
- 1:29Speaker 5: Des is on stage talking a lot and I'm backstage
- 1:32Speaker 5: waiting to come on and I just get to like
- 1:34Speaker 5: stand back there and appreciate, like, I can watch all
- 1:37Speaker 5: the circus acts from the VOMS where you enter and exit. Yes.
- 1:40Speaker 5: And you just like, every time you're literally like, okay.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It's so good.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm on stage at one point every night and
- 1:49Speaker 4: almost a tear every night for just the same act.
- 1:52Speaker 3: It's our hair hangers.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Hair hangers?
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, girl. They're hanging from their hair. Yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 3: and they're twirling around. They're flying. It's unbelievable.
- 2:02Speaker 2: A friend of mine who went the other night said,
- 2:04Speaker 2: don't sit in the front row if you scare easily.
- 2:08Speaker 2: What do you think she meant by that?
- 2:09Speaker 5: You just feel like you're in it. It feels like
- 2:11Speaker 5: you're in it no matter where you sit. It's so like,
- 2:14Speaker 5: it's beautifully set in the round.
- 2:16Speaker 3: It's not a bad seat in the house.
- 2:18Speaker 4: It's only 15 rows deep, but 15 rows deep in
- 2:21Speaker 4: a normal theater, you feel like you're on stage.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 2:23Speaker 3: What's rehearsal like? Is it just moments of utter chaos? Bonkers.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It was real. I mean, it's so slow and thought out.
- 2:31Speaker 4: But particularly for this version of the show, for both
- 2:35Speaker 4: Ruby and I coming from music theatre, it was very
- 2:37Speaker 4: much a sewing.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Together of all the disciplines.
- 2:39Speaker 4: So we have our dancers, our singers, and the circus artists.
- 2:42Speaker 4: And so we kind of all learnt the show separate
- 2:44Speaker 4: of each other. So our expectations were non-existent. So we're
- 2:48Speaker 4: learning the show having no idea what's going on and
- 2:51Speaker 4: then slowly you start piecing it together.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Well, there's so much going on at once.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Does anything ever happen where the audience won't pick up
- 2:58Speaker 1: on it but you know something didn't quite go as
- 3:00Speaker 1: it was meant to and you just probably want to
- 3:02Speaker 1: laugh and you have to keep it, you know.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Ruby and I have a really good spoken language to
- 3:06Speaker 4: our eyes.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Sure, things like not going the way they normally go
- 3:11Speaker 5: for sure is always incredibly amusing but how... An associate
- 3:16Speaker 5: director was like, no matter how many times he's watched
- 3:19Speaker 5: the show, he always sees something new.
- 3:22Speaker 2: There's always something new to see.
- 3:24Speaker 5: But that's less on the mistakes or something not going
- 3:28Speaker 5: as planned thing.
- 3:30Speaker 3: It's kind of the product of the show. That's where
- 3:32Speaker 3: the twists come from. Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 2: No one pivots like a stage professional.
- 3:36Speaker 3: No, exactly.
- 3:38Speaker 2: That's live theatre.
- 3:39Speaker 5: That's like the beauty of it, you know, like something
- 3:41Speaker 5: goes wrong and how do they navigate that?
- 3:44Speaker 4: People come back multiple times and they're like, oh, I
- 3:46Speaker 4: didn't see that before. And it's either because there was
- 3:49Speaker 4: so much going on the first time or we had
- 3:52Speaker 4: a lovely little pivot.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Or you say, well, that's because it wasn't supposed to.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Well, I guess if you've never been to the circus before,
- 3:59Speaker 1: Come Alive is the perfect place to start. It's on
- 4:02Speaker 1: until October 10th. At Crown, I don't know how to
- 4:05Speaker 1: put it because it's in a special tent.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Riverside Car Park.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Riverside, okay. That doesn't sound very glamorous.
- 4:11Speaker 4: It actually is so glamorous.
- 4:15Speaker 3: It's like we're right there.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Come round the back.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Riverside.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Thank you for coming in, guys.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Thank you very much. Cheers and Ruby, thank you.
