Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 0:44Speaker 1: Willie Nelson, Moore on the New bad Land season, Nick Caves,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Bunny Monroe, William Hurts, body heat, and of course your voicemails, texts,
- 0:52Speaker 1: dms and more, and as always, a whole lot of Rosie.
- 0:56Speaker 1: All Right, Discos, let's get into it. Greetings and salutations
- 1:16Speaker 1: Disgraceland listeners. Willie Nelson he once said that the early
- 1:20Speaker 1: bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I have no idea what that means, but if you
- 1:25Speaker 1: listen to our latest episodes on Willie Nelson, you'll hear
- 1:28Speaker 1: me make mention in our intro of quote sat on
- 1:31Speaker 1: the inside cheese unquote in reference to Smokey Robinson in
- 1:35Speaker 1: the Miracles number one song Tears of a Clown from
- 1:38Speaker 1: December twenty third, nineteen seventy. Smokey Robinson is an interesting
- 1:43Speaker 1: artist to compare to Willie Nelson. They're both assassin level
- 1:47Speaker 1: songwriters who became performers. They're both of the same generation.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Willie's a little bit older. He was born in nineteen
- 1:53Speaker 1: thirty three and Smokey was born in nineteen forty. Willie
- 1:57Speaker 1: turns ninety this week. By the way, Happy birthday, Willie Nelson.
- 2:00Speaker 1: They're both still kicking it and they both still look great.
- 2:04Speaker 1: In doing about four seconds of research prior to jumping
- 2:07Speaker 1: on the mic here, I learned that Smokey Robinson has
- 2:10Speaker 1: written more than four thousand songs, dozens of which landed
- 2:13Speaker 1: in the top forty. Willie, on the other hand, has
- 2:16Speaker 1: written more than twenty five hundred songs himself, twenty five hundred.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Not quite four thousand, but twenty five hundred. That's a
- 2:21Speaker 1: good clip. One hundred and twelve of those hit Billboard's
- 2:25Speaker 1: Top Country chart, which is not the same as the
- 2:28Speaker 1: Top forty chart. Willie, though, is iconic, and you know
- 2:33Speaker 1: what I mean, it's you know, Smokey really isn't it
- 2:35Speaker 1: Willie Nelson. You show us picture to most anyone, they're
- 2:37Speaker 1: going to know, I mean, even they don't know anything
- 2:39Speaker 1: about music, they're going to know who Willie Nelson is.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It's not really the same with Smokey Robinson. But of
- 2:45Speaker 1: course the most important difference between Smokey Robinson and Willie Nelson. Willie,
- 2:50Speaker 1: as I said earlier, has recently been featured in two
- 2:52Speaker 1: episodes of Disgraceland, and Smokey Robinson, as of this date,
- 2:55Speaker 1: has not been featured in Disgraceland, though he does make
- 2:58Speaker 1: appearances in the Marvin Gay and in the Motown episodes,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and I think he may most likely I can't remember,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but he probably shows up in the Temptations episode as well.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I'm guessing I can't remember, but there's a reason for this.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's most likely because we have a podcast about music
- 3:13Speaker 1: and true crime. Outlaws get preference, and Willie Nelson was
- 3:17Speaker 1: famously that in Outlaw in image and in action, the
- 3:22Speaker 1: shootouts and the fires and nearly becoming a member of
- 3:25Speaker 1: the twenty seven Club, all this outlaw behavior, it's depicted
- 3:29Speaker 1: in our recent episodes on Willie. It's fun to recount,
- 3:32Speaker 1: it's a blast to write about and to talk about
- 3:35Speaker 1: and to create music around. But it should also be
- 3:39Speaker 1: said that when it comes to songwriting, Willie Nelson was
- 3:44Speaker 1: also an outlaw. He was bad ass. These songs, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I can't tell. I can't tell if they're as weird
- 3:52Speaker 1: as I think they are, or if we've just accepted
- 3:56Speaker 1: the weirdness because he's Willie Nelson and we've heard these
- 4:00Speaker 1: songs all our lives, those of us who are fans
- 4:02Speaker 1: of music. But Willy didn't as most of you know
- 4:06Speaker 1: or don't. I don't know. I don't know what your
- 4:09Speaker 1: history level is on Willie Nelson, but will he didn't
- 4:11Speaker 1: truck with convention, not when it came to his songs,
- 4:14Speaker 1: not in sound, not in structure. Willie's songs they're cannon now,
- 4:18Speaker 1: like I said, but back when he hit the scene,
- 4:20Speaker 1: his phrasing, his production, his presentation, all of it was
- 4:23Speaker 1: totally unique. And that type of originality it doesn't always
- 4:26Speaker 1: break through, but thank God for Willie Nelson that it did.
- 4:30Speaker 1: We get into this and these two episodes on Willie,
- 4:33Speaker 1: which I highly encourage you to check out if you
- 4:35Speaker 1: haven't already, and later in this bonus episode, I'm gonna
- 4:38Speaker 1: get a bit more into Willie's music, specifically into one
- 4:42Speaker 1: group of songs in particular, when I do the recommendations
- 4:46Speaker 1: in the meantime, though, Shotgun Willie awaits you in your
- 4:49Speaker 1: disgrace Land feed go check that out. As of yet,
- 4:52Speaker 1: no Smokey Robinson episode, but who knows, maybe sometime soon.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But like I said, we got Marvin Gaye, we got
- 4:57Speaker 1: the Motown, we got the Temptations. You can check that out.
- 5:00Speaker 1: We've also we have previously released episodes on Jazz Great
- 5:05Speaker 1: Chet Baker, one of my favorite bands of all time,
- 5:08Speaker 1: The Misfits, and The Grateful Dead's Ron pig Pen McKernin.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Those are in your feed now. Pig Pen, like Willie Nelson,
- 5:15Speaker 1: also a bit of an outlaw Grateful Dead fans and
- 5:18Speaker 1: non Dead fans. If you're looking for a tribute to
- 5:21Speaker 1: the rough and the rowdy ways of Americana music of
- 5:24Speaker 1: a peek into those Alan Lomax and Harry Smith Bad
- 5:28Speaker 1: bad Man days, the brawlers who wrote and sang both
- 5:30Speaker 1: the ballads and the breakdowns that led to the best
- 5:32Speaker 1: blues and the best country music of the twentieth century,
- 5:34Speaker 1: then check out My Ballad to pig Pen in Disgraceland,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you will not be disappointed. So our onslaught of content
- 5:43Speaker 1: continues for the next week with episodes on Selena and
- 5:48Speaker 1: we got an episode on Chuck Berry and then no
- 5:51Speaker 1: new Disgraceland episode next week. And that's because we're releasing
- 5:54Speaker 1: our new season of bad Lands on May third, and
- 5:57Speaker 1: I want to give that series a week to kind
- 6:01Speaker 1: of be its own thing, to breathe. To get you
- 6:04Speaker 1: guys into the bad Lands Feed. Get you listening to

- 6:24Speaker 1: It's gonna be awesome. We've also got a new bad
- 6:27Speaker 1: Lands bonus episode called The Rap Party, not the after Party,
- 6:32Speaker 1: the Rap Party. See what I did there. Yeah, I'm
- 6:35Speaker 1: not that smart. I pretend to be, but I'm really not.
- 6:37Speaker 1: The Rap Party it will be different than this after party.
- 6:40Speaker 1: It'll be I don't know, I haven't quite got it
- 6:44Speaker 1: figure it out yet, but I promise you within the
- 6:46Speaker 1: next two weeks I will, And we're gonna have the
- 6:48Speaker 1: movie content that we're doing here in the recommendation side
- 6:50Speaker 1: of the after Party, We're gonna have that over on
- 6:52Speaker 1: Rap Party exclusively, but we're also gonna have some other
- 6:54Speaker 1: stuff over there. It's gonna be a totally different show

- 6:59Speaker 1: have not already. That's where you're gonna get all that
- 7:02Speaker 1: bad Lands content. More on all this later, but first
- 7:07Speaker 1: a quick break. All right, all right, all right, Willie
- 7:30Speaker 1: Nelson did not call six one seven nine zero six
- 7:34Speaker 1: sixty six three eight this week and leave me a voicemail,
- 7:36Speaker 1: but this very polite listener from the seven to seven did,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and this is what he had to say.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for uploading the
- 7:48Speaker 2: old episodes. I really loved him when they came out
- 7:50Speaker 2: and I was on board. I wasn't able to find
- 7:52Speaker 2: them again. So I've been enjoying really going back through those.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I have to make a.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Lot of long drive work and this show. It keeps
- 8:01Speaker 2: me entertained and I learned and stuff without smartest that
- 8:05Speaker 2: I love so yeah, thank you. You're doing you're doing
- 8:09Speaker 2: good work. Bye.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Why thank you seven two seven. For those of you
- 8:14Speaker 1: who don't know, like my mom, I saw my mom
- 8:17Speaker 1: at my niece's birthday party yesterday and over the weekend,
- 8:21Speaker 1: I should say. And guys, my mom she's a little
- 8:24Speaker 1: worried about me, she mentioned. So, she mentioned that she
- 8:26Speaker 1: can't believe how much content I'm pumping out. And though
- 8:29Speaker 1: I've explained this numerous times before, I didn't have the
- 8:32Speaker 1: heart to do it again, so I just nodded along.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But you guys know, like the seven twenty seven here,
- 8:37Speaker 1: that we are not releasing five new Disgraceland episodes a week.
- 8:41Speaker 1: We are re releasing previously exclusive episodes along with one
- 8:46Speaker 1: full episode per week, plus this bonus episode. You hear me.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You guys know I say this every week, And like
- 8:51Speaker 1: I said, you hear me. Wom's gams said, we hear
- 8:54Speaker 1: for you, but I say, you hear me. Disgraceland is
- 8:56Speaker 1: one full episode on Tuesday, one bonus episode on Thursday,
- 9:00Speaker 1: Previously exclusive episodes released on off days until we get
- 9:03Speaker 1: the entire one hundred plus archive out into your feeds.
- 9:07Speaker 1: All right, thank you to the seven two seven and
- 9:09Speaker 1: to my mom for prompting this clarification. Let's check in
- 9:12Speaker 1: with Phaedra from the seven to seven eighth. Hey, Jake,
- 9:15Speaker 1: it's the girl Phaedra from Vancouver, Canada.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I just want to call saying I love hearing all
- 9:21Speaker 2: the old episodes and the new. Also wanted to say
- 9:25Speaker 2: I did vote for you to get a Webby Award
- 9:28Speaker 2: because I do truly believe you deserve one. I love
- 9:31Speaker 2: all the shows you do, including bad Lands as well.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I guess the only thing I have to like talking
- 9:37Speaker 2: about meat TV shows and stuff is that show Beat
- 9:40Speaker 2: that's on Netflix with Ali Wong and that dude Glenn
- 9:44Speaker 2: from The Walking Dead. I accidentally started watching it because
- 9:48Speaker 2: I thought it was like a like a docu theory
- 9:51Speaker 2: cut or like a series kind of.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Thing, and I got really into it, and by the
- 9:56Speaker 1: time I got to the end, I got like super
- 9:59Speaker 1: get the pointed.
- 10:00Speaker 2: So I'm just getting your heads. If you do watch it,
- 10:03Speaker 2: do not have expectations. It's totally not worth it, but
- 10:07Speaker 2: either way, keep it up.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Rocke Roller can't wait to hear some more. He's out.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah there you go, Phaedra, Just like the seven two seven,
- 10:15Speaker 1: she gets it. Thanks for voting. For us to Faedra
- 10:18Speaker 1: and thanks to everyone else who voted for us for
- 10:20Speaker 1: a Webby, we're nominated for Best Music Podcast. I have
- 10:25Speaker 1: no idea as of the taping of this whether or
- 10:27Speaker 1: not we won that Webby would be our second win
- 10:30Speaker 1: for Webby Award, which is kind of a big deal.
- 10:33Speaker 1: We were right there at the end, neck and neck
- 10:36Speaker 1: with mister John Legend, so we shall see, hopefully all
- 10:39Speaker 1: know soon. To your point about Beef, I'm not going
- 10:42Speaker 1: to watch Beef. I've received a bunch of recommendations to
- 10:46Speaker 1: do so, and Netflix is, like, you know, reminding me
- 10:50Speaker 1: every five seconds that I need to watch it. But
- 10:53Speaker 1: based on you saying the end was disappointing, I'm just
- 10:56Speaker 1: I'm just not going to do it. I'm also also
- 10:58Speaker 1: because I'm kind of pissed at Ali Wong. And that's
- 11:00Speaker 1: all i have to say. All Right, one more voicemail.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Let's go with Andrew from The three one.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Four, Hey, Jake, Andrew Laposcher from Saint willis here. I
- 11:09Speaker 2: was listening to the Disgrace Laning Spotify playlist, which is great.
- 11:13Speaker 2: He has a lot of great stuff on it, but
- 11:14Speaker 2: I do live bone to take with you about it.
- 11:16Speaker 2: How come, of all the songs to represent Chuck Berry,
- 11:20Speaker 2: you pick My Dingling. I mean you could have done
- 11:23Speaker 2: Johnny Be Good or No Particular Place to Go, or
- 11:27Speaker 2: even run around Rudolph Well a lot of the novelty
- 11:30Speaker 2: songs about is Dick Anyway, Love what you do. Keep
- 11:34Speaker 2: up the great work.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Bye, great question, Andrew. For those of you who don't
- 11:39Speaker 1: know what Andrew is talking about, Spotify asked me to
- 11:43Speaker 1: put together an official Disgrace Slam playlist for them. So
- 11:46Speaker 1: we did that, or I should say I did that,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and I included, as Andrew says, Chuck Berry's version of
- 11:52Speaker 1: My Dingling. And the reason, I guess is that I've heard, dude,
- 11:57Speaker 1: the Chuck Berry hits so many freaking time. I'm just
- 12:00Speaker 1: to be honest. I know he's a god. I'm just
- 12:03Speaker 1: bored for them. Also, I couldn't find an easy way
- 12:06Speaker 1: to get that fifties vibe into the sequencing of the
- 12:08Speaker 1: playlist like I could the later Live seventies version that
- 12:11Speaker 1: I have of My Dingling. Also, because you know, I'm
- 12:15Speaker 1: an immature prick sometimes and that song just cracks me up.
- 12:18Speaker 1: But Andrew, you'll be happy to know, dude, I get
- 12:22Speaker 1: into the greatness of Chuck Berry's music, specifically his lyrics
- 12:25Speaker 1: in both the Disgraceland episode on Chuck Berry and more
- 12:28Speaker 1: fully in the chapter on Chuck Berry in my book.
- 12:30Speaker 1: You can check that out whenever you want. All right, guys,
- 12:34Speaker 1: six one seven nine zero six six six three eight.
- 12:36Speaker 1: If you want to leave me a voicemail or you
- 12:38Speaker 1: want to send me a text, let's respond to some texts,
- 12:41Speaker 1: shall we? All right? This is a long one from
- 12:44Speaker 1: the four one two. I'm going to read it wicked fast. Jake.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I keep meaning to tell you my own Quentin Tarantino
- 12:50Speaker 1: want to play story, So excuse me while I word
- 12:52Speaker 1: vomit all over your text messages. I'm from LA, but
- 12:54Speaker 1: I've lived in Pittsburgh for several years now. I visit
- 12:56Speaker 1: my family in LA a few times a year. In
- 12:58Speaker 1: two thousand and five, I was on a red eye
- 12:59Speaker 1: from LA to pick to PGH and see Quinton on
- 13:03Speaker 1: my plane, but I kept thinking, that's not him. Why
- 13:05Speaker 1: would he be going to Pittsburgh. I get to my
- 13:06Speaker 1: seat and dude next to me says, did you sit
- 13:08Speaker 1: to see Quentin Tarantino in first class? Okay, so it
- 13:10Speaker 1: was Quentin Tarantino. I get to Pittsburgh and go to
- 13:13Speaker 1: get my luggage and I see him standing outside waiting
- 13:15Speaker 1: for transportation. I run out there and I say, I
- 13:17Speaker 1: never do this because I'm from LA and really just
- 13:19Speaker 1: try to leave people alone. But can I get your autograph?
- 13:21Speaker 1: He was cool, and he signed one for me. About
- 13:22Speaker 1: five years later and I'm at my parents' house in
- 13:24Speaker 1: LA and a movie maker we know is staying with him.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He starts telling me about the time he went to
- 13:27Speaker 1: Pittsburgh for the George or Marrow and a Living Dead anniversary.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Thinking he ran into Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez there
- 13:32Speaker 1: and they weren't letting them in because they weren't on
- 13:34Speaker 1: the list. He tells the door person, do you know
- 13:36Speaker 1: who these guys are? And the door person says no,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and they're not on the list. Our movie maker friend
- 13:41Speaker 1: was on the list, so he runs in and gets
- 13:42Speaker 1: somebody get Quentin and Robert Rodriguez inside. It didn't hit
- 13:45Speaker 1: me until later that that was why Quentin Tarantino was
- 13:48Speaker 1: on the same plane as me, not me as the
- 13:51Speaker 1: four one two cool story four one two. I appreciate it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I've never seen Quentin Tarantino on a plane, but Uh,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't don't know if I I
- 14:00Speaker 1: don't know if i'd approach Quentin Tarantino on a plane.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Planes are weird. You see famous person on a plane
- 14:05Speaker 1: and it's like, yeah, it's just awkward. You know, you
- 14:08Speaker 1: go up to him, you bother him, then you got
- 14:10Speaker 1: a fucking walk by him to the bathroom. It's just weird.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I don't know that I do it. Maybe i'd wait
- 14:14Speaker 1: till I was off, but then they're going somewhere, then
- 14:16Speaker 1: they're moving, then their emotion that's always hard too. What
- 14:17Speaker 1: are you gonna do it chase someone down? I don't know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: but uh, I applaud you for uh for going up
- 14:24Speaker 1: and getting an autograph, and I like to hear that
- 14:25Speaker 1: he was cool. He seems like a cool guy. Have
- 14:27Speaker 1: you checked out the podcast and my recommendations. I haven't
- 14:29Speaker 1: shouted this out yet, but Quentin Tarantino has a podcast
- 14:32Speaker 1: with Homeboy who did rules of Our Rules of Attraction?
- 14:37Speaker 1: Why am I blanking? Why am I blanking?
- 14:40Speaker 2: Uh?
- 14:41Speaker 1: Roger Avery, that's it, yes, Roger Avery. He re posted
- 14:46Speaker 1: a story I did about Rules of Attraction about a
- 14:48Speaker 1: week ago, and I sent him a message and he
- 14:50Speaker 1: left me on Red and never got back to me.
- 14:52Speaker 1: That pissed me off. Roger Avery just kidding. I didn't
- 14:54Speaker 1: actually get upset about that, but uh yeah, Roder Avery
- 14:57Speaker 1: and Quentin Taranty they have a podcast. Check that out,
- 14:59Speaker 1: all right. Going to the eight to oh one, Jake,
- 15:01Speaker 1: thank you for putting your podcast back on all platforms.
- 15:04Speaker 1: It was a pain to try to catch your content
- 15:05Speaker 1: when it was exclusive. I have some catching up to do, man,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and I am looking forward to it. Best regards, Curtis. Curtis,
- 15:12Speaker 1: we're doing our best, man, get in here, check it out.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Lots of lots of content, all right. From the two
- 15:18Speaker 1: oh five, Hey, Jake, this is Luck's musician from Birmingham,
- 15:22Speaker 1: Alabama living in Atlanta. I just want to let you
- 15:24Speaker 1: know how much I love this podcast, how much it
- 15:25Speaker 1: inspires me to keep going despite the regular life shit
- 15:29Speaker 1: that everyone, including musicians, go through. We may not be
- 15:31Speaker 1: all murderers or victims, but we all got shit, you
- 15:34Speaker 1: know what I mean? Anyways, thanks for humanizing much love
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know what? You know what two o five I
- 15:41Speaker 1: hear you. This is in all seriousness. We all got
- 15:44Speaker 1: the shit. We all have shit to deal with, every
- 15:47Speaker 1: single one of us, and I remember I was once
- 15:50Speaker 1: a full time musician, and it was the hardest fucking
- 15:53Speaker 1: thing I ever tried to do in my life. I
- 15:55Speaker 1: did not succeed at it to the level that I
- 15:57Speaker 1: wanted to. I couldn't raise my family while I was
- 16:01Speaker 1: doing it. It was a huge letdown. It fucking gutted me.
- 16:04Speaker 1: It gutted my confidence. And at the end of the day,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I would wake up or I'd go to bed, and
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'd be like, what am I even doing this for?
- 16:12Speaker 1: Do I even want to do this? Do I love this?
- 16:15Speaker 1: And thankfully I kept doing something and I found this
- 16:19Speaker 1: little niche for myself. So two o five, you sound
- 16:23Speaker 1: like you sound like you got a good optimistic head
- 16:26Speaker 1: on your shoulders. Keep going, keep digging, keep digging. Disgraceland
- 16:31Speaker 1: as well, thank you for writing. One thing I tell
- 16:35Speaker 1: my kids all the time, and I'll say this to
- 16:37Speaker 1: whoever will listen, because someone said it to me about
- 16:40Speaker 1: twenty years ago and it really resonated. Just show up,
- 16:43Speaker 1: Just keep showing up, and good shit happens. All right,
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's enough of the life affirmation section of this podcast.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Let's go on. Let's do another text here at eight
- 16:53Speaker 1: five six, Jake all caps four exclamation points. Kristen from
- 16:58Speaker 1: the eight five six here long Time Listen twenty nineteen parentheses,
- 17:01Speaker 1: First time Texter twenty twenty three parentheses listen. I need
- 17:06Speaker 1: all caps and after party theme song ring tone, like
- 17:08Speaker 1: I need air to breathe, like I need music to
- 17:11Speaker 1: live in, like I need Disgraceland on my rides to
- 17:13Speaker 1: and from work to transport me out of the Monday
- 17:16Speaker 1: daily grinds. Please please, please make that happen. Keep up
- 17:18Speaker 1: the greatness, Jake. I love what you're doing. Thanks well, Frankie. Uh,
- 17:24Speaker 1: what is the name of the theme song here for
- 17:26Speaker 1: after Party? It's the one we did for the Sinatra episode.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I can't think of the name, but you know I
- 17:33Speaker 1: love that song too, and I long have designs on
- 17:36Speaker 1: doing a double Disgraceland album, double vinyl, where we do
- 17:41Speaker 1: a bunch of songs, the themes, a bunch of cues,
- 17:44Speaker 1: a whole bunch of stuff. So maybe, Kristen, maybe sometime soon,
- 17:48Speaker 1: we'll get that out there. God, so many texts. I
- 17:51Speaker 1: feel bad. Oh four roh two. I asked this question
- 17:54Speaker 1: last week and the last after Party about the what
- 17:57Speaker 1: are your favorite eighties horror movies? Four roh two chimes
- 17:59Speaker 1: in favorite eighties horror movies. Number one Fright Night Never
- 18:02Speaker 1: saw it. Number two Lost Boys saw It. I think
- 18:04Speaker 1: it's really damn good. Number three Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Don't love it. Number four Polter Guys. You heard me
- 18:09Speaker 1: talk about that last week. Number five Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Solid.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I like the ranking of beele Juice is a horror
- 18:15Speaker 1: movie because check this out. You wouldn't think. I wouldn't
- 18:17Speaker 1: think beal Juice is a horror movie. But you wouldn't
- 18:19Speaker 1: necessarily show it to your nine year old son either,
- 18:22Speaker 1: would you, because it'll freaking the fuck out because it's scary.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Michael Keaton's scary to little kids. Scary. So I like
- 18:29Speaker 1: that list. Thank you. Four two, all right, A couple more.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Four to one, Oh says hey, J husband and I
- 18:35Speaker 1: are on vacation in Barcelona and found your store and
- 18:39Speaker 1: they send a picture here it says rock n ROLLA.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I like that.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Thank you for thinking to me it's rock a Rolla.
- 18:47Speaker 1: You know that, though, but I like I get it.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I get it, rock and rolla, rock a Rola. I
- 18:51Speaker 1: hear you appreciate that you're on vacation, You're thinking to
- 18:55Speaker 1: Disgraced Land. That's awesome. Five one, eight, Hey Jake, not
- 18:58Speaker 1: sure if you've ever done anything on the band. I
- 19:00Speaker 1: think there might be enough crazy bauchery there for an
- 19:02Speaker 1: episode or two. Thanks love the show, Chuck. I think
- 19:04Speaker 1: you're right, Chuck. I'm saving that one. I have a
- 19:07Speaker 1: lot of love and a lot of affection for all
- 19:09Speaker 1: the members of the band, and I'm looking forward to
- 19:11Speaker 1: covering that at some point. No plans right now, though,
- 19:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie to you. Hey Jake, it's Nicole
- 19:16Speaker 1: in Buffalo. This is from the seven one six. These
- 19:18Speaker 1: are her top five horror movies. Hey Jake, it's the
- 19:21Speaker 1: Cole in Buffalo. My top five eighties horror films. One
- 19:24Speaker 1: video Doome. I've never seen that. Two Psycho two. Didn't
- 19:27Speaker 1: even know there was a Psycho two. Three, The Lost
- 19:30Speaker 1: Boys Another Lost Boys for the Shining five Nightmare on
- 19:33Speaker 1: Elm Street. I think I have to I think I
- 19:36Speaker 1: got to reconsider. I think I need to rewatch a
- 19:39Speaker 1: nightmare on Elm Street. The Shining Though, right up there,
- 19:43Speaker 1: right up there, fantastic. You know what I didn't mention
- 19:46Speaker 1: when we were talking horror horror movies, and it's not
- 19:48Speaker 1: from the eighties. But it's one of the scariest movies
- 19:51Speaker 1: I've ever seen. Have you guys ever seen The Strangers
- 19:54Speaker 1: or it might be just called Strangers. It's like two ten, twelve, thirteen,
- 20:00Speaker 1: something like that in that in that timeframe, I think,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and they they made it for about ten bucks. Live
- 20:06Speaker 1: Tyler's in it. Actually really good movie. You know, people
- 20:10Speaker 1: go away to a house, people in the house get
- 20:12Speaker 1: terrorized by other people outside of the house. That's basically
- 20:15Speaker 1: the plot. But it's fucking horrifying. Check that out. All right,
- 20:20Speaker 1: let's see here where we going. That's a lot of texts,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and I apologize to all the people who texted and

- 20:52Speaker 2: RC.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I didn't know that was a name, RC Jackson. I
- 20:56Speaker 1: googled ARC Jackson anyways. RC Jackson email address. RC Jackson
- 21:02Speaker 1: not gonna tell you. Her email subject line is do
- 21:04Speaker 1: a Little Kim episode. Message from her drug mule days
- 21:07Speaker 1: to the feud with Foxy Brown that led to a
- 21:09Speaker 1: shooting at Hot ninety seven, to her dating the drug

- 21:30Speaker 1: season twelve coming on May sixteenth. Gonna get this bad
- 21:32Speaker 1: Land season launch. Then we're gonna go into another season
- 21:35Speaker 1: of Disgracelands straight away. We'll have both going at the
- 21:37Speaker 1: same time. In that new Disgraceland season, you're gonna get
- 21:40Speaker 1: a little Kim. Like I said, you're gonna get Springsteen
- 21:43Speaker 1: justin Bieber so many I can't even remember off the
- 21:46Speaker 1: top of my head right now, but there's a lot
- 21:47Speaker 1: coming your way, Little Kim included. All right, guys, be

- 22:10Speaker 1: Meety Tim. Ashley Vaughn on Facebook Rights, Hey, Jake, love
- 22:14Speaker 1: the podcast. Been listening for years. Love the way you
- 22:16Speaker 1: tell the stories and make the listener completely involved. It's great.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I think a great story would be about Ginger Baker.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Ever thought of doing an episode on him? Peace Ashley,
- 22:25Speaker 1: thank you appreciate that. I love getting you guys involved. Honestly,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I want to find new ways to get you guys involved.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So if you got any ideas, let me know. Ginger
- 22:33Speaker 1: Baker cool suggestion. I'm gonna admit I don't know a
- 22:37Speaker 1: lot about Ginger Baker or Cream other than the Clapton connection,
- 22:42Speaker 1: but maybe I'll check that out. Chet Baker though in
- 22:45Speaker 1: your feeds, if you're just looking for a Baker episode,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I don't know. All right, what am I? What's see?
- 22:50Speaker 1: What are we doing here? I gave you some top
- 22:52Speaker 1: five horror rankings. I want to do this Facebook from
- 22:56Speaker 1: Courtney Ford on Facebook. This message she sent let me
- 23:00Speaker 1: pull this up straight away, one, two three, Getting in
- 23:05Speaker 1: here with the Courtney Ford. What is she saying? Okay,
- 23:09Speaker 1: there's a lot here, all right, Yeah, this is why
- 23:10Speaker 1: I wanted to read this. Okay, So Top eighties horror
- 23:13Speaker 1: from Courtney fordy Evil Dead? Have you seen Ash versus
- 23:16Speaker 1: Evil Dead? No?
- 23:17Speaker 2: I have not.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I have seen the Evil Dead, though it's awesome, the shining, great, maximum, overdrive,
- 23:21Speaker 1: great suggestion, way to go, Courtney Donna, the Dead and Reanimator.
- 23:27Speaker 1: She says, I refuse to rank Hitchcock. It seems blasphemous.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I disagree. I think there's a lot of Hitchcock that
- 23:32Speaker 1: you can rank, because there's a lot of Hitchcock that, frankly,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I don't love. But of course I love. I love
- 23:38Speaker 1: so much Hitchcock. Don't get pissed at me, Hitchcock fans.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And she says, and are you forgetting clerks for nineties movies?
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm not all right. I guess I just didn't love it.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I mean, it's great, it's good, not great, it's good.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I don't I don't love it. Though she's still pulling
- 23:54Speaker 1: for Pat and she says that's she wants a Mike
- 23:55Speaker 1: Patten from Faith no more episode of Disgrace and maybe someday, Courtney,
- 23:59Speaker 1: maybe some day. Alrighty, let's move on. Let's do some
- 24:04Speaker 1: Instagram responses real quick. Celia Jones Cracko says, Hey, Jake,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I know you're always asking that we are listening, what
- 24:13Speaker 1: we are listening to, what are we watching, what are
- 24:14Speaker 1: we reading, et cetera, for suggestions for you to try out.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So I was wondering if you heard about the new
- 24:19Speaker 1: series on FX and Hulu about Tupac called Dear Mama.
- 24:23Speaker 1: You know I have not, and this is an issue.
- 24:27Speaker 1: How the hell do I not hear about this? Do
- 24:28Speaker 1: you guys know about this? I feel like there's a
- 24:30Speaker 1: new series on Tupac Secure coming out about his mom
- 24:34Speaker 1: and him that we should know, and it sounds like
- 24:37Speaker 1: it's actually out, but I'm looking forward to that. Celia
- 24:42Speaker 1: goes on to mention that you know, we talk about
- 24:45Speaker 1: Tupac's mom and the Black Panthers not only in the
- 24:47Speaker 1: Tupac episodes, but also the jay Z episode, which we do.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So thank you for that suggestion, Celia appreciate it. Over
- 24:55Speaker 1: on Twitter, Mark Schumacher writes listening to the after Party
- 24:58Speaker 1: and wanted to share my top five horror film from
- 25:00Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties Hell Raiser number one, number two, American
- 25:03Speaker 1: Werewolf in London, number three, the re Animated number four,
- 25:05Speaker 1: The Creep Show, number five, the hitcher Man. I've only
- 25:09Speaker 1: seen one on that list, American Werewolf in London, which
- 25:11Speaker 1: might be in my top five. I didn't put it
- 25:13Speaker 1: there last time we talked. I should have. I love
- 25:16Speaker 1: love that movie. Great movie. All right, my people, I
- 25:19Speaker 1: really appreciate all the messages. I love the connection. Thank you,
- 25:22Speaker 1: Keep it coming, Keep it coming this week at Disgrace
- 25:25Speaker 1: Lampod on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Disgrace Lampod at
- 25:28Speaker 1: gmail dot com six one seven nine zero six six
- 25:30Speaker 1: sixty three eight voicemail and text. Bad Lands launches next week,
- 25:34Speaker 1: and I want feedback on the Richard Pryor episode. So
- 25:37Speaker 1: hit me up, hit me up, hit me up. I'll
- 25:39Speaker 1: be back after this. So the recommendations part. This is
- 25:57Speaker 1: the recommendation's part, the part where we recommend the things
- 25:59Speaker 1: that need record ending. The recommendations part. All right, I
- 26:02Speaker 1: did some traveling over the last couple weeks. I got
- 26:04Speaker 1: a little R and R. I was down in the
- 26:05Speaker 1: Great State of Florida for almost a week. I got
- 26:07Speaker 1: some time to take in some content, and woe Nelly,
- 26:10Speaker 1: did I consume some stuff. I watched a lot of television.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I watched a lot of movies. I even read for pleasure.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Just a little quick heads up though, before we get
- 26:22Speaker 1: into all these recommendations, I just want to mention that
- 26:24Speaker 1: the movies and TV part of the recommendations, part of
- 26:27Speaker 1: the after Party bit, will now exclusively be featured in
- 26:32Speaker 1: the Rap Party, which is the bad Lands bonus episode
- 26:34Speaker 1: that you'll be getting on Fridays in the bad Lands Feed.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So this is the last time the movie content will
- 26:40Speaker 1: be here in the after Party again. You're gonna have
- 26:42Speaker 1: to go to the bad Lands Feed and subscribe over there.
- 26:45Speaker 1: So onto the recommendations without further ado, Let's start with
- 26:49Speaker 1: what I'm reading. I'm reading The Death of Bunny Monroe
- 26:53Speaker 1: by Nick Cave. My god, man, this book is so
- 26:58Speaker 1: fucking good. It's one of those books you read that
- 27:02Speaker 1: has an immediate impact on you, like in the moment,
- 27:07Speaker 1: like you're just you're just like, oh god, this is
- 27:10Speaker 1: how oh okay, I get it. Yeah, I see, I
- 27:14Speaker 1: see now. It is hysterical, it's dark, it's deeply cool
- 27:21Speaker 1: in a way that I'm not even going to try
- 27:24Speaker 1: to describe because I can't. The closest thing I can
- 27:28Speaker 1: say to describing this book is that it's if Charles
- 27:34Speaker 1: Bukowski and Raymond Chandler got drunk together, then got arrested
- 27:40Speaker 1: and ended up spending a week in the drunk tank
- 27:45Speaker 1: with one another. You might come close to getting a
- 27:49Speaker 1: feel for what this book is. The Death of Bunny
- 27:52Speaker 1: Monroe by Nick Cave. That's the musician, Nick Cave. I
- 27:57Speaker 1: want to run and read everything the guy's written after this.
- 28:00Speaker 1: A lot of you have recommended Nick Cave as an
- 28:03Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland that will happen at some point once
- 28:07Speaker 1: I get a complete picture of the artist, and that's
- 28:10Speaker 1: going to take a while. I love this man and
- 28:13Speaker 1: I love this book. Go check it out. Excuse me
- 28:18Speaker 1: for those of you who didn't hear that. My stomach
- 28:20Speaker 1: just growled. If you did hear it, I apologize. Maybe Leah,
- 28:23Speaker 1: our producer here, will be able to cut it out.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Maybe not. Who knows we're going rough here, Okay. I
- 28:29Speaker 1: also watched on Netflix with my wife a show called Obsession.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Which is basically softcore pornography. It was number one or
- 28:41Speaker 1: two on the Netflix chart when like trending shows, and
- 28:46Speaker 1: it was English and had this guy in it who
- 28:48Speaker 1: was in this like Harlan Coben series that we liked
- 28:50Speaker 1: that was also English, that we're like, oh, we'll try this,
- 28:53Speaker 1: and a lot of sex, lot of sex immediately like
- 28:57Speaker 1: from the jump, and we're like, this is cool. It's
- 29:00Speaker 1: done tastefully, you know, it's English, and just waiting for
- 29:05Speaker 1: something else to happen, as one does, and nothing really happened.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It's a bad show man, But I watched all of it.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's only four episodes mini series. If you want to
- 29:18Speaker 1: laugh or you know, if you want something to do
- 29:20Speaker 1: with your wife or your husband or whomever, check it
- 29:23Speaker 1: out Netflix and chill with obsession, all right. I also
- 29:27Speaker 1: watched I'm gonna get into these movies, man, these movies.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I watched some great fucking movies. I watched Side Effects.
- 29:33Speaker 1: It's the Steven Sodenberg director. Guy Soderbergh did this movie
- 29:40Speaker 1: with Jude Law and Ruoney Mara. I believe it's Rooney
- 29:44Speaker 1: Mara and Katherine Zada Jones. It's from twenty thirteen. I
- 29:49Speaker 1: believe and it's about it's very hitchcocky and it's like,
- 29:57Speaker 1: it's kind of I don't want to go into it.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I don't want to give you a plot. It's just
- 30:01Speaker 1: takes place with this therapist a patient, uh and big pharma,
- 30:05Speaker 1: and the twist is fantastic. The movie's just great. I
- 30:09Speaker 1: was thinking about it for days afterwards. I also bit
- 30:12Speaker 1: the bullet. I subscribe to Criterion Channel and they have
- 30:16Speaker 1: this whole like what do they call it, Erotic Thriller
- 30:20Speaker 1: collection on there, So I watched Body Heat with with
- 30:25Speaker 1: William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. I've been I've known about
- 30:30Speaker 1: this movie forever. I thought it was just cheesy, like
- 30:33Speaker 1: a soft corn, soft softcore kind of porn thing. But
- 30:38Speaker 1: it's filmed in Florida, and I'm interested in stuff from Florida,
- 30:41Speaker 1: Florida content, Florida history these days for whatever reason. So
- 30:44Speaker 1: I thought i'd give it a shot, and it blew
- 30:45Speaker 1: me away. It's so much better than I thought it
- 30:48Speaker 1: was gonna be. I thought it was gonna be like
- 30:49Speaker 1: this cheesy, like kind of like well erotic thriller, which
- 30:52Speaker 1: it definitely is, but it is not cheesy. It's fucking great.
- 30:56Speaker 1: The cast is great. It's got a young early Ted
- 30:59Speaker 1: Danson it along with William Hurt. It's got oh man,
- 31:03Speaker 1: I can't remember the guy's name. It's it's just really
- 31:05Speaker 1: a tremendous, tremendous movie. And I didn't realize it was
- 31:09Speaker 1: a sort of reup on Double Indemnity, which was an
- 31:15Speaker 1: old movie from nineteen thirty nine or nineteen forty, which
- 31:19Speaker 1: is a famous movie which I saw many, many, many
- 31:21Speaker 1: years ago. I didn't put two and two together. But
- 31:23Speaker 1: now I'm gonna go watch and watch Double Indemnity as well. Anyways,
- 31:26Speaker 1: body heat check that out. Also, you know what I'm
- 31:30Speaker 1: watching here? This is new, This is new, This is like,
- 31:32Speaker 1: this has been This treasure trove of content has been
- 31:36Speaker 1: sitting right here in front of me for well over
- 31:40Speaker 1: a year now, and I have not discovered this. Okay,
- 31:43Speaker 1: So cord cutters out there right, how are you feeling?
- 31:46Speaker 1: How are you feeling about your decision? Well, everyone was
- 31:48Speaker 1: cutting the chords right. I'm done with Cable. I'm not
- 31:52Speaker 1: doing it. It's too much money. Well, yeah, we all
- 31:55Speaker 1: know what happened. Then you get Netflix, you gotta pay
- 31:57Speaker 1: for Disney, HBO, Max who the whole thing by the
- 32:01Speaker 1: end of the day comes you still spend in the
- 32:02Speaker 1: same night you're sending to Effinity every month. Right. The
- 32:05Speaker 1: problem for me is I like the ritual of I'm
- 32:09Speaker 1: an old guy, I guess I like. I like the
- 32:11Speaker 1: ritual of flicking through the channels, not to mention all
- 32:14Speaker 1: the live sports, and I know you can get that
- 32:16Speaker 1: elsewhere blah blah blah, but the experience is not the same.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But I don't like that experience that much. In fact,
- 32:23Speaker 1: I find the selections on cable, on the cable channels
- 32:26Speaker 1: to suck, and I pay for all of it. We have,
- 32:29Speaker 1: like the whatever the max thing is, I don't even know.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I can't even imagine it's whatever. It's gross, but it sucks.
- 32:36Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I don't care about like, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 1: like the home shows and all that crap. They build
- 32:42Speaker 1: you into these packages because you want one channel out
- 32:44Speaker 1: of the thirty, you gotta get it to the whole
- 32:45Speaker 1: fuck pain in the ass. And I'm trying to figure
- 32:48Speaker 1: out a way where do I go, What do I do?
- 32:49Speaker 1: How do I get the stuff I want?
- 32:50Speaker 2: You know?
- 32:51Speaker 1: Right, so on Samsung on aw Samsung TV, and I
- 32:53Speaker 1: swear to god, this is not paid for Samsung AD.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I just discovered there's all these channels. As you guys
- 32:59Speaker 1: probably know because you're smart. I'm like me, all these
- 33:01Speaker 1: Samsung channels, and they're just like, there's like a thousand channels.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I'm not even joking, like a thousand channels of insanely
- 33:10Speaker 1: cool stuff and none of it is on demand, and
- 33:13Speaker 1: it just runs. There's a whole There's two channels. One
- 33:16Speaker 1: plays all eighties music videos just constantly, just constantly, all
- 33:20Speaker 1: nineties music video channels. Videos on the other channel, all
- 33:23Speaker 1: nineties and eighties all day long. It's like I'm fourteen
- 33:27Speaker 1: again and I'm trapped watching MTV, which was an experience
- 33:31Speaker 1: that I complained about then because of the commercials in
- 33:33Speaker 1: eighty percent of the videos I thought sucked and I
- 33:35Speaker 1: would just suffer through them. Well now I have all
- 33:37Speaker 1: this nostalgia for them, and I will gladly watch them.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Just fed to me. Just drop the IV into my veins.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Send me the fucking nostalgia content because I don't want
- 33:47Speaker 1: to go on YouTube. I'm never gonna go on YouTube
- 33:49Speaker 1: and search. You know an obscure Madonna video that was
- 33:54Speaker 1: a hit that I've forgotten about. But if you put
- 33:56Speaker 1: this on. It's just gonna play and it's gonna get
- 33:58Speaker 1: all the stuff. Not to mention, there's a Carol Burnett channel.
- 34:02Speaker 1: There's there's this great you know, the Sheut Factory. Who
- 34:05Speaker 1: I know they make these documentaries, these music documentaries. That's
- 34:07Speaker 1: how I know. The Shout Factory network played Living in Oblivion,
- 34:11Speaker 1: and they played that after they played Losing It, which
- 34:13Speaker 1: was Tom Cruise's first movie. Just great fucking content. Man,
- 34:18Speaker 1: you guys probably know this already. This costs nothing. If
- 34:21Speaker 1: you have a Samsung TV. And again, this is not
- 34:23Speaker 1: an ad. You can have access to all this stuff.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Go get it. I got it. I'm stoked, I'm watching it.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Who knows, I might get sick of it. I might
- 34:33Speaker 1: give up in the next couple days. I'm gonna dig
- 34:35Speaker 1: in more though. By the next after party, or I
- 34:37Speaker 1: should say the next rap party. When we're talking TV
- 34:40Speaker 1: and film, I'll chime in on my latest Samsung TV
- 34:45Speaker 1: network whatever the hell. It's called Discoveries, and I know
- 34:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna find some cool shit for you. So moving on.
- 34:50Speaker 1: What I'm listening to this is simple. It's it's Willie Nelson.
- 34:55Speaker 1: It's the demo sessions by Willie Nelson. These are his early, early,
- 34:59Speaker 1: early recordings. This is him and a guitar. These songs. Man,
- 35:03Speaker 1: God damn, they're good. They're incredible. This is the early stuff.
- 35:08Speaker 1: It's him, it's his voice, it's just him and a guitar.
- 35:12Speaker 1: It's so rich. This record I've listened to. It's not
- 35:16Speaker 1: a record, it's a collection, right, It wasn't an album.
- 35:18Speaker 1: They're just demos that these were released maybe I don't know,
- 35:20Speaker 1: two thousand and two or two thousand and three on CD,
- 35:23Speaker 1: and I've listened to these. This is the type of
- 35:27Speaker 1: thing you just put on. You listen to it all night,
- 35:28Speaker 1: over and over and over and over, and you get
- 35:32Speaker 1: drunk with it, and your whole mood changes with it,
- 35:36Speaker 1: and you see things you hadn't seen before, and you
- 35:38Speaker 1: hear things you hadn't heard before, and you think things
- 35:40Speaker 1: you hadn't thought before. It's tremendous. The demo sessions by
- 35:44Speaker 1: Willie Nelson, Go get it. I'll be back after this,
- 36:08Speaker 1: all right. Let's recap, shall we? Number one Willi Nelson
