- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited today because this episode is very special and I have very special guests with me.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So uh without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founders of Covey Skincare.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um, one of them is a supermodel.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So um Emily Di Donato is here with us, and then the other one is a Google executive, um, which is Christina Garcia Uribe.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So welcome to the show, Christina and Emily.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I'm so, so excited that you're here.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, we're so excited to be here.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Um thank you so much for having us.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's my honor.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I would love to get started.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Um, maybe Emily, uh, you can start us off with your background and uh really kind of tell us what it's like being a supermodel.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, that would be a great place to start.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Well, um, background on me.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: So I am from upstate New York originally, about an hour and a half north of Manhattan.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: And I've lived in the city since 2009.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: I started modeling full-time straight out of high school.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I've been modeling now for a long time.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: It's taken me all over the world.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I've been the face of Maybelline for 12 years.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: I've done campaigns for Armani and Mew Mew and Juicy Couture and so many more.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's been definitely been an exciting um couple of years.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, over the last five to six years, I started focusing a little bit more on social media influencing, if you will.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and then launched Covey in March.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: And that has been my main focus, which has been super exciting.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, Maybelline is like the one brand I used growing up.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So it's like that's just so surreal talking to you.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Wow, so impressive.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's such an iconic brand.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I'm so lucky to like have been with them for so long.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Christina, what about you?
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so um I am actually originally from Florida and uh just moved back to the city.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: I'm now living about 200 feet away from Emily, maybe even less.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Uh so we we are definitely, you know, we share the same dermatologists.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: We live less than 200 feet apart from each other.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: So I think we're the epitome of best friends.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, I am not a supermodel.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Um, I have spent actually my entire career at Google in sales and marketing.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: I I literally started out as an intern.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: So if you've seen the movie The Intern with like Vince Vaughn at Google Campus in California, that is it's it's pretty true to life.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: And that was me at one point.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Um, so wait, let me get this clear.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: We have a supermod and a superwoman here with us.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, I got it.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we we always joke and we say, listen, if like a supermodel and a Googler came together to simplify your skincare routine.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: You know, that's it's like the best of both worlds.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I love that you've worked with um uh with Google because you know, obviously that, you know, I being a millennial, just watching Google, you know, come up and become this huge thing was surreal.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: So wow, you know, very I'm very impressed.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's it's it's an excellent company for sure.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So I would love for um you guys to get started.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Emily, maybe you can tell us like how Covey came about, you know, really like the the vision behind the brand that you both had, because you know, it's a phenomenal line.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Everyone listening, you know, I've had the opportunity to try it, and I'm obsessed, especially with the moisturizer.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So I want to know all the details, like how you guys came up with the idea, the formulations, all the good stuff.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we started working on Covey about three years ago, which is crazy, even more than that now.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and it kind of started because Christina and I both had this shared feeling that we found skincare very overwhelming.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, my skin was so important for my job being a model.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And I genuinely loved beauty and I loved sharing my routines online and with my followers.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: But, you know, I would share my routines, and it was kind of this one pivotal moment when I shared my routine with Harper's Bazaar, their famous get unready with me.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: And people tore me apart in the comments and they were like, this is the craziest skincare routine ever.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Those aren't the right steps.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: That's not those products, don't go together.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Like her routine is totally whacked.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I don't understand.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I love beauty so much.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I have access to all of these experts.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Like, I thought I was doing everything right, and apparently I'm not.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Christina and I both shared this kind of feeling about skincare.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: We loved it so much, we bonded over it so much.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: We genuinely had no idea what we were doing.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: And then we did a ton of research.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: We went through over 500,000 reviews of top-selling skincare products.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: We went through hundreds of comments on my YouTube channel and my Instagram.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: We looked at skincare communities like skincare addiction on Reddit and Twitter, and we realized that people had the exact same questions and confusions that we had, which were what products do you actually need in your routine?
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Do they work together and are they compatible?
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and what order am I supposed to use them?
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: And people had these exact same questions popping up.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: So that's why we created this simple, effective three-step system.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: The names tell you exactly how to use them.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: We used high-quality, effective, and compatible ingredients.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: So that's how cuppy kind of came into the world.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, I love that.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I love how organic that is because honestly, you know, people still have those questions, Emily.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Like, I get them too, you know, like they'll be like, Well, what step do I apply my serum?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: No, you know, and it's like, well, it's serum moisturizer, and I'm still confused, like, why that information isn't easy, you know what I mean?
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Like easily accessible to people.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Like totally.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: And I think, you know, skincare, obviously, people are so passionate about it.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: There's so much skincare content on the internet now, which is so wonderful.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: But now we kind of felt, Christina and I both felt that the world had become this more is more mentality has kind of been pushed upon us, more steps, more actives, more layers.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: And I totally fell victim to that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: I was like putting it all on my face at once, but my skin would be peeling and flaking and breaking out.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: And I'd be like, what's wrong with my skin?
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: I'm doing, I'm giving it everything, but actually less really can be more when you use high-quality products with ingredients that work together and keeping it simple, it can be great.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And you know, Christina, I want to actually have you tell us more about it because you know, the three-step routine is it's brilliant.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: I love that you guys made this three steps.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: I love that it's, you know, you look at it and you know exactly what to do.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So, you know, were you did you guys do a lot of like um research into the Gen Z market?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: I know you you're more from the, you know, the um tech end.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm wondering like if that went into any of the research you guys did.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we we did an extensive amount of research and social listening.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: So we, I mean, we were particularly tuned in and looked at, you know, all the comments and the messages that Emily was getting um from her audience, but we also looked at like over 500,000 product reviews as well, and like really popular skincare communities like My Skin Care Addiction on Reddit and Google Trends.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: And so I think what's really powerful about Covey is that right now we're really seeing this kind of skin minimalism trend come to be, but that is actually what Covey is founded on.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: That's what we saw three and a half years ago.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: So all these other brands are kind of now trying to like jump in the bandwagon and be like, oh, here's the you know, simple version.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: But that's why, you know, we launched Covey.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, we were very thoughtful about that.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: It wasn't going to be just one product and then another product, and then 20 products later, you're like, where am I?
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Um so you know that I think that's something that's really, really powerful about the the Covey story and like how committed we are to that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: No, I love that.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: And I love the point that you brought up because you're absolutely right.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: There are so many brands right now that have maybe what 60, 70 products, and now their marketing is like, well, go on to our website and find the three or four that work for you.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: What the hell do you mean?
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: How am I supposed to do that?
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: So I think it's a very, very excellent point that you brought up.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Now I want to talk about formulations because I know that um Emily, you had mentioned that, you know, you like you guys are both skincare enthusiasts, and obviously you did your research.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: So, what are some of the things that you found in your research that you really wanted to incorporate into the formulation?
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: So, you know, when Christina mentioned that we went through over 500,000 reviews of top-selling products, actually, Christina, I feel like you should explain what you did with that algorithm and figuring out, you know, certain you should explain that, Christina.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, my proprietary algorithm.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Well, what in that case, what we were like specifically looking at is that there, what we were finding is even with the top best-selling products, like people were people were still complaining about like irritations, breakouts, etc.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: So what we did is we actually analyzed like all the ingredients in these products, and we noticed that there was definitely like a commonality.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: There were like specific ingredients that definitely were being called out for like causing irritations and breakouts.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: So we made sure that we did not include those ingredients in our products.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Um, and we also worked with a leading uh renowned dermatologist, Dr.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Rusak, as well, so that she could really help us identify like what are those key products that are going to make the biggest difference in your skin and what are like the key ingredients that are backed by the latest research and science that are going to be most effective.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: So I would say that it was a combination of both of those things.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: But um, I think for every single product, we had at least 12 iterations per product.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: And we had a focus group of over 150 people, you know, all different backgrounds, ages, skin types that were with us throughout the covery journey and all of those testing all of those iterations as well.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Wow, I really love that, you know, because I know that there's such a conversation around this idea of, you know, skincare has to be it has to be universal in the sense that, you know, it should work for every skin type and it should work for every skin color.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And I agree with that.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: I think that that's a very important factor.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: So the fact that you guys kept that in mind and you've you've really launched with you know all of this in mind is phenomenal.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: I really, you know, I really can thank you for that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: I think that was something that like that's the exact words that we're like, we want this to be like a as universal as possible.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So it can really be a foundational routine, no matter what your skin type or your age or background is.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And you know, I actually have some some questions, specific questions, because I love your serum as well.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And I think for me, I love products that have like that milky consistency, if you guys know what I mean.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: And I love like I love that feeling in like uh, you know, cleansers or serums or anything.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And I just love the way you formulated it because my skin does not feel heavy or weighed down when I use your products at all.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Even the moisturizer, it's very hydrating, but my skin feels smooth and I can do my makeup beautifully.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So, what are some of the key ingredients that you guys use to really um not only make it a great formula, but also make it so that it's great for makeup, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, especially with your background, Emily, you know, I'm sure you know that was important given that, you know, makeup is important in all of our lives.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: For our Christina, do you want to take it away for the vitamin C serum?
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Because that's her most passionate product.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: And I'll ask her the moisturizer.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: I sure will.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Well, at a the the reason why our vitamin C serum has that really nice milky consistency is because we use what I like to call, and Emily always makes fun of me, is the Maserati of vitamin C's, which is an ingredient called THD ascorbate.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: So most vitamin C's use alasorbic acid, you know, even the very famous skin pseudocoles, C fulic.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Um, but THD ascorbate is actually the latest form of vitamin C.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: And it's actually 50 times more powerful than al ascorbic acid, but it is more gentle for your skin.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: So it's like more powerful, but like I said, not as harsh for your skin.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Um, and we also included grapeseed extract as well, which really helps with like cell regeneration.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and of course, vitamin E, which is like, you know, the BFF and really supports the THD ascorbate.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: And what's amazing is like all three of those ingredients, when you use them all together, and there have been studies on this, they actually like amplify and boost each other's benefits, which is really cool.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: See, this is like this is how I know you guys did this right because you're talking the right science.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, this is something that no one ever talks about is how ingredients work together.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: You know, in terms of the science world, you know, where I'm from, we know that all these chemicals are not gonna sit on your skin and do nothing to each other, they're gonna interact with each other, you know.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: So that's what's extremely important.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: And I love that you're bringing that up.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And also, you know, your vitamin C is no joke.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: It's about it's 15% vitamin C.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: So you have a good concentration in there.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Yes, absolutely.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: But because we use that gentler form of it, what's amazing is that you can use it both morning and night.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: So you kind of get like both benefits of vitamin C because during the day, you know, it kind of protects your skin from UV damage, but then you can use it at night.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: And it's also really powerful when it comes to like, you know, repairing your skin, especially at at night as well.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: So that's that's a real plus and kind of a myth that like they usually say if it's al sorbic acid, only do it during the day.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: But with ours, you can use it both morning and night.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: I really love that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And I wanna, you know, I just want to say for everyone listening out there, I mean, you it even says on the bottle, like they've you guys have really gone out of your way to like educate your consumers, I feel like, because you even mentioned that, you know, the vitamin C and you know, the ingredients, vitamin E and grapeseed, are supporting collagen formation and collagen in our skin, which is so important.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I feel like no one realizes like, you know, vitamin C is an essential step in collagen synthesis.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: You know, no one speaks of these things.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: So I think what you're doing is just it's brilliant and it's beautiful.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: So I want to move on and learn about the moisturizer though, because I'm not gonna lie, it's an absolute stunning product.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: I want to know everything.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I'm really glad what you said earlier that you felt like your makeup went on really well with this moisturizer because that was something that I tested when we were creating this moisturizer.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I really wanted something that was hydrating and whippy that played really well with makeup.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So while we were formulating this, I would wear different samples to work and I would ask makeup artists, like, oh, how does my skin feel?
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: How is the makeup layering on top of this?
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Like, would you use this again?
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: So that was a really great way to kind of like test the consistency and get people's feedback.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: But our last but not least moisturizer really is this perfect combination of oil-based moisture ingredients and water-based hydration ingredients.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: So, one of our favorite ingredients there, we have squalin, which is an amazing moisturizing ingredient, really softens and smooths the skin.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: We also have glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, which are known super hydrators, really locking water into the skin.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Um, so those are a couple of our favorite ingredients there, but it really did create this like nice, whippy, hydrating texture that feels kind of luxurious, but still lightweight enough to wear during the day, but great at night as well.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's amazing.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: It's like, you know, my makeup loves it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I I really love it.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: And I think and it, you're right, it is hydrating enough for night because I know night creams feel very heavy and people like that feeling.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: But this, I mean, it's it's phenomenal.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: It's truly phenomenal.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Everyone listening, you if there's one thing you try for cubby, try this moisturizer.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: It's amazing.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, I so I want to know, I want to know more about, you know, just like in terms of, you know, you guys mentioned minimalism, right?
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: And I and I really like that.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Um, are there going to be other products that cubby comes out with, or are you gonna stick with this three-step routine for a while?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: So we'll stick with this three-step routine for now because we really wanted to create this foundational universal routine.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: We can't share too much yet, but what we can say is that we always promise to only create skincare essentials.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: We really only want to create products that we know you need and know your skin will love.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: But more information on that later.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Everyone will have to stay tuned.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, I I can't wait.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: You know, whatever you come out with next, I'm gonna be the first one to be messaging you.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: But um, no, I I actually I want to know more about um the Reddit communities because I know you guys had brought up that you did so much research.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: And I love that you said that Reddit forum um skincare addiction because I'm on it like all day.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Like I'm on that forum all day.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: And I feel like the people on there are just very hungry for information.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: So, you know, um, what were some of the things that you guys had to keep in mind when you were, you know, really thinking about your consumers and your demographic, like making sure, you know, like in terms of facts, right?
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like right now everyone's looking for which company is giving me the the answers I need, you know, for good skin health.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: So was there like a campaign around education or anything like that that you guys had to undergo to like, you know, uh draw in your demographic or no?
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: I I mean, I think we were kind of looking more so at my skincare addiction, which is definitely a rabbit hole that you can go down on to really like assess what what are the key questions that people are having about skincare routines and like what are their challenges specifically?
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Because I think for Emily and I, we were like, we have this challenge, but now we need to make sure that this is a universal challenge and that this is clearly there is a market for this.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: And so my my skincare addiction really validated that in many ways.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: And to Emily's earlier point, that's where we saw a lot of those and identified a lot of those key questions along with Google Trends, where people were kind of like, well, what are the key products that I should be using?
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: When and how should I be using them?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Um, and I do think that, you know, that's where we are definitely very committed to keeping it simple.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: And I think that, you know, the covey girl is really someone who is like a, you know, young professional or what we've seen is like a busy mom.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: It's kind of any woman who is really looking to like, I want to take care of my skin.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I want to commit to a skincare routine, and I'm looking for something that is just like ready to go.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: And it's as simple as possible.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Um, because these women, they deserve.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: I feel like routines for me, they empower me, they make me feel more confident.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: And my skincare routine was like 12 plus steps, and I was starting to lose that.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Um, so that's what we really wanted to bring back with cubby.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, I think you did, and you know, I'm just gonna say this because I have no filter.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: This is like the better version, much better version of Glossier.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: If Glossier did skincare right, it would be cubby.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Like, honestly, like it's you guys have done it so beautifully, and I think the packaging and the concept and the way it looks and feels in your hand and when you're putting it on.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, it all is just so I feel like anyone would fall in love with it, you know, in any age group.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and that really actually brings me to my next question is accessibility.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Um, what are some plans that you guys might have so that you know everyone can really enjoy your products and and they're easily accessible?
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Well, first of all, I'm really glad we're recording this and that particular sound clip that you just said.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: I'm like, we'll we'll be cutting that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Um but I think you know, from an accessibility perspective, right now, you know, we we are only online primarily through our website.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: And we we really even just our website design itself, we had a really great partner and we wanted to make it as simple and as easy to navigate as possible.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Like to your point earlier, any other skincare site that you go on, you like click the drop down and they're like, you know, there's 40 different what are your skin types challenges, and like there's so many different ways to search for things.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: So I think that's really like where we prioritize like making it as accessible as possible.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: And of course, uh we have hopes and plans to expand into brick and mortar and retail at some point.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Um, I actually I have a very specific question for you, Emily, because I think the listeners would love to know um what like makeup artists really like do to prep um the skin for models before like a shoot.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Like what are some of like the you know, like go-to things that you've seen most makeup artists do?
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, you know, I think especially when it is a beauty job or a beauty campaign, they always tend to cleanse the skin and do some sort of facial massage, which is funny because I feel like guaasha and facial massage is becoming so popular right now on TikTok, or at least on my for you page.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Um every makeup artist, like especially when it comes to beauty, they're always doing some sort of like pretty intense facial massage before they get into like putting makeup on the face.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: I would say that is one key thing for prepping for makeup, making sure the skin is super hydrated.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Wow, I didn't know that.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: That that's really interesting.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: I was I was expecting you to say like exfoliation or something, but that's really cool.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's awesome.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I mean it's Nice for the model as well.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I bet.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I bet.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, other than like, you know, smooth skin, I know that there's a lot of concerns, you know, in terms of like pigmentation for darker skin.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: So, you know, can we talk a little bit about that and how, you know, with the vitamin C serum, what were some of the target, you know, like the targeted concerns you guys had that you wanted to really address, you know, and because I know all of us deal with certain things, you know, universally, but then obviously hyperpigmentation is is worse than darker skin.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So um, what were some of the founding, like the pillars of what you wanted to really go after with skin health?
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: You know, I think for our vitamin C serum and addressing hyperpigmentation, our main, you know, in creating that product, the main thing that we wanted to do is to do a ton of testing because, you know, a product can work amazing on my skin, amazing on Christina's skin, but that will not be the case, you know, of different people of different skin types and backgrounds, ages, ethnicities.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: So that's why we took it super seriously to test all of Covey's products and over 150 people.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: We got that feedback, we took it so seriously, which is why we had so many different iterations.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: We actually went through two different labs because we were being such pains in the butt.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: So we've actually probably actually had even more iterations than we've been saying because we got we lost our first lab because they were like, get out of here, you two are too annoying and too specific.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: But you know, we just took it really, really seriously.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: And when someone said this doesn't work with my skin, I didn't see a difference, it irritated my skin.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: We went back to the drawing board.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: So that was really our way engaging like, do these products work for hyperpigmentation, you know, with vitamin C.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: It's a great ingredient for that, but making sure that our form of vitamin C works for different people's skin types, which, you know, so far, so good.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: We've gotten great feedback, which is why it is launched now in the universe.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Well, it works.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: No, it works really well.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: I have darker skin and I can vouch for it.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: You know, it works really well for um hyperpigmentation because I I had some spots and I've been using it consistently and I've definitely noticed a difference.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: So I know that it's working really well, regardless of skin tone.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: So that's why I really asked.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: But um, but yeah, I want to know, you know, just in general, like, you know, what is your the bigger vision for Covey?
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know that the the line is out now and it's it's beautiful, and I hope it's doing amazing, which it should.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: But what is what are some of the bigger goals you guys have for the company?
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: These are meaty questions that you're asking.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: Very good question.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Yes, I mean, I think that you know, like our our mission with Covey was is to really like optimize people's lives by providing, you know, simplified routines.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: In this case, it's in the form of skincare.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: And I think that that particular mission will continue to guide us wherever that may go and whether, you know, I think that that's something that we do feel very strongly about and are very committed to.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And also, like, Emily, I wanted to ask you because I know like growing up, like I had so many friends who wanted to go into modeling, right?
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: And like their biggest thing was like they had acne or they had like, you know, something a skin concern.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: It was like such a hurdle for them.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: So I would love it if you could offer some guidance or some advice for all the young, you know, boys and girls out there that are might be listening and they want to go into modeling as a career and you know, just anything that you can offer as advice.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, when it comes to skin or when it comes to just career generally.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Um, well, your skin and and the career.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, whatever, whatever comes to mind, really.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think for skin, my main piece of advice, and not even because of covey, it's just like less is more.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: You I think, you know, when I was younger and I also had pimples and broke out and had flaky and drying skin as I grew older and through my teenage years, like your skin is changing.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: And I just remember panicking and putting everything all over my face.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I think I was drowning my face in like toners and just trying to like make it all go away, but your skin changes and it's just like focusing on keeping it simple and staying on a routine, staying consistent was really key for me.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: And then in terms of just general career advice as a model, someone who wants to be in the industry, it's like the industry has changed so much since I entered it about 12 years ago.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Social media is really important.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: And I think now you have so much power to kind of decide what you want to share with the world.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: What do you want your personal brand to be?
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And that might sound like a really heavy, meaty question, but it's actually so fun because you can engineer your career and the type of voice you want to have and what you want to share and who you want to connect with.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Because if you want to get signed with IMG models tomorrow, all they care about is your social following.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: And if you want to have a social following, you have to think about what is that social following going to be about?
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Who are you engaging with?
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: What are you actually saying on there?
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Um, so I would say to focus on social and be thoughtful and intentional about what you're saying on there.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: And everyone listening, I really urge you to check out Cubby.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: It is a phenomenal line.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I've been using it, I love it.
